Toy donation lights up young faces JULY CONTENTS C oatesville Primary School received 15 boxes full of ZURU toys last week as part of a new sponsorship formed by the Friends of the School with the toy company owned by the local Mowbray family.

‘Mahoenui’ property manager Lyndsay Jobin and Harry Mowbray delivered the toys to principal Richard Johnson and a bunch of Coatesville children who were thrilled to inspect the boxes and their contents.

oad safety has been on everyone's minds this month.

The horrific accident on 14 June at the corner of DFH and CRH involved six cars and a truck and left a local year-12 student fighting for her life.

Only nine days later, another accident occurred within 200m of the same site. This time on CRH involving a truck and a motorcyclist. Tragically, the motorcyclist died. These two events were soon followed by more accidents in the area, including a school bus crash on the Albany-side of the Lucas Creek bridge on 28 June. The past month has been extremely dangerous on local roads.

At the community groups meeting hosted by the CRRA on 20 June, Auckland Transport representatives told those gathered that construction of the proposed roundabout at the top of the hill will begin in summer − anytime between December 2018 and March 2019. However, in the short term AT will put in place temporary measures to immediately improve the road safety at the intersection.

When the Chronicle went to print, nothing had changed but Local Board member Louise Johnston has more on this subject on page 10.

Feedback Cruel shooting

We live on Glenmore Road in Coatesville and our cat Katy was recently shot (we think it was on Saturday, 16 June). We heard two shots at around midday but we didn’t pay attention because we didn’t even think that somebody would be killing our cat. We know that people around sometimes shoot rabbits and opossums, but it’s impossible to confuse our cat with a rabbit because she is a bright orange Abyssinian cat.

Katy was missing for three days until she came home on Monday, 18 June, sick and injured. We took her to the vet and after the x-ray was done the vet said that Katy was shot by an air gun with two bullets in her body. The first bullet went through her abdomin and the second one broke her leg.

Now she is in critical condition in the pet hospital.

Our biggest question is what kind of person would [want to] kill a cat in the middle of a sunny day in such a good and safe community?

Our kids could be somewhere nearby because they like to play with their pet Katy outside. We didn’t have any warning that the shooting would be carried out. We clearly heard two shots and they were from somewhere nearby. We called all neighbours around our property but nobody admitted the shooting.

So the question still remains who is guilty and how to prevent

such cases in the future? We would appreciate hearing any information from the people in our community which can help to find out.

We called the police and SPCA so they should investigate this as well, because this is criminal offence to [try to] kill someone’s pet and it's cruelty against animals.

Fitness station now open!

The new fitness station on the reserve was christened this week by the CRRA. Chairman Mike Rowe cracked open the bubbly (1) and Alan Curtis cut the ribbon (2) while a group of keen locals swung by to give it a go (3). Exercise guru Tarnia Harman even gave some on-thespot coaching to those who'd answered the call to wear lycra.

If you haven't checked out the fitness station yet, it's worth a look.

The wood-chip ground cover means it's dry underfoot. There are loads of excercise options and these can be done to the intensity you choose. Each area has an

instruction sign to show you what to do, but if you want to get the best out of the new set-up, Tarnia, who runs the Green Gym, is holding two free walk-through sessions in the coming fortnight.

The first will be this Monday, 9 July and the second on the following Monday, 16 July − both weather permitting.

So, get your work-out gear on − or your dog walking outfit − and join Tarnia at the fitness station at 9.30am. This 30 minutes of free fitness instruction from an experienced trainer will help get you started.

Bernie Harfleet (above) from Give a Kid a Blanket visited Coatesville on 15 June to collect the blankets, PJs and other snuggly items donated by the local community. Bernie stopped first at the school where the students had held a pyjama day, wearing their PJs to school in support of the cause. He loaded up his van with donated items and then headed to the Settlers Hall to collect the last bags of goodies that the wider community had dropped off.

The donated items will be handed on to social workers and public health nurses who will pass them on to people who could do with some extra warmth this winter.

After five weeks of training, the children were ready to race. Coatesville boys win Targa Rally in Ha Steve Kirk-Burnnand and Mike Hay are a couple of grown up Coatesville boys who recently achieved something pretty special by taking out first place overall at the three-day Targa Rally Hawkes Bay.

T

he pair competed against 50 other cars and raced in stages over distances ranging between 10-40km on rural roads that were closed to the public.

Cars start one minute apart with the aim being to complete the stage in the fastest speed, with the top speed allowed being 200km/h.

Multiple stages are raced each day and the finish times are added up over the three days to provide the event placing. Steve and Mike's competitors included Steve’s brother Carl K-B and his Wellington cousin Mark K-B who all also drive BMWs. The following is Steve's account of the most memorable day in his rally racing career so far.

"I built my rally car myself. It's a 1994 BMW 3 series compact and has an engine from a BMW M3.

We did extremely well in our car considering we were up against some pretty serious machinery.

Some cars, like the Porsche GT3, are serious bits of kit. These cars are designed by Porsche to be road-going race cars and have millions of dollars of research and development invested into them.

My car is very much on the budget side of things, so I’m really proud of what we achieved with it.

Mike and I grew up in Coatesville and attended Coatesville Primary.

Mike started riding motorbikes at the age of 4 and I was aged 5. We did a lot of motorbiking and our

parents were really supportive, taking us out to the forest for weekend rides or to our friends’ places where we hooned around.

When we got big enough, we progressed to paddock cars and had a number of 'races' at local farms and the annual Coatesville 100 with a huge trophy and all.

We learnt lots from those days so by the time we were old enough to get our driving licences, we already had a great understanding of car control and the responsibility that goes with it. I’m a huge fan of teaching car control especially to young drivers. If you want your kids to learn car control, sit next to them and take the car in the paddock. Slide it around at a slow speed and play around. Rural areas are the perfect place for it and they will learn quickly what to do if they find themselves in a bad situation on the road.

My childhood also included lots of time spent at the race tracks following my father Barry racing around. It’s not really surprising I took up an automotive apprenticeship and was a mechanic for ten years. I loved working on cars, but as time went on the passion for the job started disappearing. For a new career I applied to Fire and Emergency and it took a few years to become successful, but I eventually made it and four years on I'm now a firefighter and I wouldn’t trade it

Mike runs his own business that specialises in the building industry and races UTV’s in his spare time.

A UTV is a fast two-person, small off-road buggy that’s open sided and very capable. Some events are 1000km-long and spread over two days.

In motorsport, no matter what you drive, safety is always a priority. To race a rally car, it must have a roll cage, race seats, seatbelt harnesses, head and neck restraints, fire proof overalls, helmets, GPS units, fire extinguishers and a medical kit.

but the driver and co-driver wouldn’t be safe without them.

A huge amount of time is spent prepping a car for these events and they’re usually relatively free of mechanical breakages, however this year we encountered a problem that could have ended our race. We had to make a quick roadside repair to our exhaust system when all the mounts holding the exhaust broke off mid-stage. Stopping to make a full repair would have meant losing time, so we raced on to the end with the exhaust half dragging along the road and praying it wouldn’t break off. After the stage, we used plastic cable ties as a

temporary fix then later we fixed it with some number 8 fencing wire to make the repair more durable.

At another point, we came across oil on the road which almost sent us off the road. The oil spill was reported to the marshal at the end of the stage, but unfortunately a number of cars already racing the stage didn’t get the warning in time and sadly one of the competitors rolled off the road in a spectacular fashion leaving the co-driver and driver temporarily stuck but luckily uninjured.

During the very last stage of the event the sun strike was a real issue for us and almost cost us the race. Not realising that just over a blind brow the road turned right at an intersection, I missed the turn and raced toward the wrong road which quickly turned ugly. Next thing we knew the road surface had changed to gravel and with trees on the outside of a fast approacing corner, we didn't have much stopping distance. I thought: that’s it, we’re going to slide off the road into these trees and the event’s over! But we kept our cool and somehow gathered it up missing a road works sign, ditch, and trees and braking just in time to stay on the road.

At the end of the race, we suspected we might be in first place but this was only confirmed when we actually crossed the finish line − an amazing feeling.

Livestock in New Zealand are often transported great distances. Even though there are only 36 properties infected with M. bovis, infectious animals frequently appear healthy and can be sold with no one realising the risk they pose to other livestock.

Many people in the wider Coatesville area raise calves and it is important to consider the following when obtaining stock: • Try and buy calves from only one or two different places.

• Find out and write down the details of every farm and stock movement for these animals. Your stock agent should be able to provide this information. Otherwise, if you are buying them privately, please keep detailed records.

• Avoid places where lots of animals from different places mix, (e.g. sale yards) and make sure your transporters practice good hygiene between farms and good biosecurity measures (no mixing different animals in the truck/yards etc.)

• Make sure your calves are NAIT tagged.

• Feed your calves milk replacer, pasteurised milk or acidified milk as these are much less likely to contain M. bovis. If your calves are used to whole milk, this should be implemented slowly to avoid gut upsets.

Scouts camp out on the reserve

ver the second weekend of 16 June, Coatesville Scouts held their annual mid-winter camp and working bee on the Coatesville Reserve, and this year we invited Taiaotea Air Scouts from Browns Bay to join us.

The weather for the weekend was forecast fine and dry, and so, on Friday evening (8 June), 10 scouts from each group arrived at 5pm and proceeded to set up camp before the light faded.

The set-up was completed with the help of car lights and then everyone tucked in to a takeaway pizza dinner.

Camp was taken down, all the gear was put away and the fire extinguished before we departed late in the afternoon.

A huge amount of clean-up work was done over the weekend and rubbish, left on the reserve, has been seriously reduced, for which enormous thanks goes to all the scouts, leaders, parents and helpers. It was great fun for our scouts to join with Taiaotea for this camp and both groups enjoyed working and playing together doing some good old fashioned scouting activities.

he Coatesville Corridor project has been gaining momentum since last year with a number of property owners keen to come on board. Our two property assessors, 'the Owens', have been out and about meeting up with those locals interested in putting aside space for a safe natural habitat for our wildlife.

The identified areas have been assessed for their suitability taking into account the topography and geography of the region and planting requirements are being refined. The Coatesville Corridor group has also been in discussions with Council and the Pony Club, around an extension being made to the Wild Wood area, taking in the gully area of the reserve. This area is predominantly wet with a stream flowing through to the ponds closer to the Coatesville Riverhead Highway. As it is an area that is more difficult to maintain with a mower, it may well prove to be an ideal location for a native flora and fauna habitat instead.

If all goes to plan, this area as well as those areas already assessed, would be invaluable spaces that would assist in joining the dots of the North West Wild Link.

During summer and autumn, the Coatesville Corridor team have also been sourcing and

providing native seeds to the Paremoremo Prison where they are germinated and grown on to the stage where they can be planted out. These will be used for regeneration purposes across the region and the wider Auckland area, as part of the Million Trees programme and to celebrate Matariki.

Rodney Local Board Update

A

s a local resident and mother of teenage children, I am extremely concerned about our rural road safety. A tragic accident claimed a life this weekend on the Coatesville Riverhead Highway (CRH) and the week before there was another horrific accident at the intersection of Dairy Flat Highway and CRH. I do think that AT have been slow to realise the impact of the surrounding subdivisions on our once quiet rural country roads. Hopefully,

by AT allocating $122m towards rural road safety we will see some urgently needed improvements.

I personally believe that there needs to be a multi-pronged approach towards rural road safety that includes education, major safety improvements including speed reductions, enforcement (cameras) and a greater police presence. The intersection of DFH and CRH is well known as one of the worst intersections in NZ and the promised roundabout is coming but has been delayed because of Geotechnical and Land acquisition issues. The urgency of this project has been escalated

to senior Auckland Transport staff.

However, we need temporary safety measures immediately at this intersection and I am hoping that when you read this article they have already been installed.

The following statement has been issued by AT: Auckland Transport is developing plans to temporarily manage speeds and the intersection operation at the intersection of Dairy Flat Highway and Coatesville Riverhead Highway. These measures will improve safety at the intersection until the new roundabout can be installed in the next financial year. (2018/2019) The layout and design of the new intersection is currently being finalised and is still on track for construction to start in the summer 2018/19. The temporary measures will be installed in the next few weeks subject to approval and availability of resources.

are starting to engage with the local community about their vision for the future park. Council have owned this 154 hectares of farmland for almost 20 years.

It would be great as part of this process if we can start using the park for riding, running and walking. From the roadside it is flat paddocks, but out the back it is rolling hills, established trees and the Rangitopuni stream which runs through the land even has its own waterfall. Can you please let me know if you would like to be involved in this part of the project.

Another project that is now on its way is the plan for Greenways trails for Coatesville and Dairy Flat.

Council held a number of drop in sessions in June asking locals where they think the trails should be located. The draft trail network plan for Coatesville and Dairy Flat will come out in July/August and you will have an opportunity to provide feedback on this draft version. The most successful plans are where there has been a lot of local input. We know our area better than someone sitting in front of a computer in central Auckland.

Useful belief

I

spent an inspirational two days on the Gold Coast at the Australasian Real Estate Conference.

During the conference, one of the speakers had a message that really resonated with me. Chris Helder put a new twist on the power of positive thinking and gave me a new way of looking at life that I could take away and apply not only to my work but my personal life too.

Everyone's acquainted with positive thinking, but sometimes what life throws at us makes it extremely difficult to be 'positive'. Instead Chris talks about adopting a ‘useful belief’. He says happiness is a byproduct of a useful life. Take ‘useful’ actions – Ask yourself “what’s the most useful action to get me from 0 to 2 and then what’s the next useful action to go from 2 to 4 etc”. According to Chris, this transfers to something in our brain called the Reticular Activated System, which is our brain filter.

For example, if you bought a red car you may never have noticed other red cars driving around but once you own one, you will see them everywhere! This part of your brain looks for the things that you train it to look for. This is how we create and once you train it to look for opportunities, you will start to see them. In short, what you aim for is what you will get. Whatever you have an expectation of is what will be.

Having a useful belief is very practical, which I found grounding. In real estate you hear agents saying that times are tough so your RAS will find you tough times.

If agents are saying buyers are hard to negotiate with, then they will be hard to negotiate with. If agents are saying this is a hard market, then it will be a hard market. Realistically, buyers and sellers will always be there, it’s the strategy you choose that will help you find opportunity in the face of challenges. In life as a whole, now is the best time to be doing whatever you want to be doing. Don't wait till later. Take useful actions that help you to act now!

Lastly, Chris reiterates that Energy is a Decision...

So true! Whether we are going to a client meeting or meeting a friend, we choose how we present ourselves with our energy. We may feel quiet or subdued, however, making a conscious decision with the tone or enthusiasm of our voice or how big our gestures are will create an energy rush in our bodies that will build. Our energy grows from this.
