his month there are plenty of good news stories to take your mind off the mid-winter blues. We're well past the shortest day and the weather's been great. Plus, the school holidays start on Friday which will bring a welcome change of routine for many school families.

On the news front, online shoppers can expect faster parcel delivery times thanks to the changes at NZ Post and the arrival of the Freightways Group's Poste Haste courier van that's now operating in the area.

65th Anniversary

Congratulations to Maggie and Jim McIntyre who celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in June. For most of their years together, the McIntyre's have lived in Coatesville. They only recently headed up to Orewa to enjoy a low-maintenace lifestlye by the sea.

As a couple they've always enjoyed a party − even a 'clean-up party' after a party. Apparently a 65th anniversary is blue sapphire and although they didn't receive a card from the Queen this year, they celebrated their six and half decades of marriage with their family and raised a glass or two. Awesome!

Happy Birthday Albany Vet Good Deeds and Great Fun at School's Pyjama Night The annual Coatesville School Pyjama Night was great fun for all! Huge numbers of children and adults enjoyed the evening, with 'pyjama fun' being the main objective! The fun included catching up excitedly with friends, plenty of food to enjoy and the claiming of a great position for the movie, with all the comforts brought from home − bean bags, soft toys (large and small), sleeping bags, pillows...it was all there!

While the kids settled in to watch a movie, many adults joined them, while others enjoyed a social gathering in the staffroom well away from the 'PJ fun' in the Learning Hub! The night coincided with 'Give a Kid a Blanket Day' which our families supported wholeheartedly. Those who couldn't make the PJ Night donated at the hall and others brought their donations to go with the theme of the evening.

The Albany Veterinary Hospital celebrates turning 30 this month.

The Albany Veterinary Hospital first started in Library Lane in Albany Village and moved to its current location at 416 Albany Highway in 1994. Dr Grant McCullough − a well-known Coatesville local − has owned the clinic for the whole of its life and veterinary nurse superstar Paula Thoms has been here from the beginning.

Grant is not often seen in the clinic these days as Albany clinic has now grown to a group of clinics called the Veterinary Hospital Group. Grant is also the current President of the NZ Veterinary Association and spends significant time fulfilling that role.

Pony Club Season Ends on a High Note

oatesville Pony Club took time out to celebrate our successes and wrap up the 2021 season at prize giving on 30 May at Sanders Reserve.

This year the Pony Club has seen member numbers grow and riders of all levels excelling and competing at local, regional and National levels.

Prize giving was a fun social event for all riders and members to get together, socialise and recognise the high achievements of its members.

At prize giving the club also took time to recognise the hard work and effort that all members put in on a volunteer basis. Running such a large club cannot be done without the support from members and families, as well as the wider Coatesville community, and local companies that help us through giving time and support and sponsorship too. We’d especially like to acknowledge our two major sponsors: Albany Toyota, thank you for your continued support, and Bayley’s Real Estate who we welcomed as a new sponsor this season.

In 2021 the club managed to hold most of our planned events, including show jumping, show hunter and a one day event. These are great opportunities for our riders to compete with riders from other clubs. This year the Coatesville Pony Club took out overall winners for the Waitemata district Show Hunter competition.

A massive part of our riders' success is due to the quality of instructors that the club is lucky enough to attract and maintain. At present we have 11 instructors on our rally nights and two instructors who take our adult ride, and

we also have many of our senior riders aspiring to step up and coach other

riders too.

The Club prides itself on being a fun and enjoyable place and with over 100 riders we are one of the biggest pony clubs in the area. The Club runs three rallies a week; juniors on a Wednesday, seniors on a Thursday, and adults on a Tuesday night.

The pony club season is over now so things are quiet, as we take some well-earned rest before the season starts again in September.

Registrations open again in August, we look forward to seeing returning members and welcoming new riders who may wish to join our club. une’s Hall meeting for the Coatesville Garden Club, which got off to a delayed start, drew 61 members in, to help decide the best photographers in the club. Entries in six categories plus an overall winner were voted for, numbers tallied as they were displayed on the big screen and the winners announced. Vivid colours, balanced subject content, great use of light and real finesse identified the winners readily. Overall winner was Shirley Jensen who captured the magic of a southern garden (Maple Glen, top) in the garden vista category but she was challenged by Mary Logan (with a garden trip shot of terns), Wendy Whitfield (bloom), Jan Overington (edibles) Angelika de Vere (humour) and Kathy Lambert (garden visitors). Well done shutterbugs.

Bloom Board winners were Susan Haslam, Helen Forsyth and Jan Sprosen and the Produce competition winners were Owen Sprosen, Shirley Jensen and Helen Forsyth. Well done in rainy conditions Kathy Lambert made a magnificent 24th birthday cake, ably cut by Christine and Tony Peek who have served the club since its inception.

We were all saddened recently by the passing of a club mate − Gaye Pratt − she will be remembered by all for her spirit, enthusiasm and vitality. Our memories will be long lasting.

The Garden Club is a focal point for meeting people to then organise other activities as a group and this month's trip organised

by Eric Haslam was to the Devonport Museum by Mt Cambria then a visit to the Navy Museum at Torpedo bay. History is fascinating especially when some of us are part of it.

The twice monthly catch ups for coffee at local cafes continues to be a success with the activity taking up most of the morning in lovely surroundings. With a full programme sorted for the year we are already juggling activities for 2022.

Busy Winter for PFC Group

T

he first time I checked my A24 trap and found a dead rat lying beside it, I was thrilled. Seeing the rat lying there and knowing it had been dispatched humanely, sat well with me. But what really felt right was that I hadn't introduced toxic chemicals into nature's food chain that might accidentally kill other species.

The reality is, a rural lifestyle means we're on our own when it comes to managing rats, mice and stoats. No one is going to step in and sort it out for us. Well, we were on our own until the Pest Free Coatesville group started and then quality information and pest animal management kit became more readily available.

The group continues to grow, attracting new volunteers daily.

Leader Gary Langridge says currently 250+ volunteers have joined and the number of traps in use in the Coatesville area is on the rise. He estimates there are around 500 traps now in place in the Coatesville area. "That's about 25 percent of our goal to reach 2000 traps. When we reach that number, we will achieve extermination," he says.

As a result of the Pest Free New Zealand message, Good Nature who manufacture the A24 traps, has experienced huge demand for its traps. However, getting the message out is still a high priority.

"We're trying to post more broadly on social media and in October we'll be at Coatesville Market sharing a stand with Harcourts who have come on board as a sponsor to support us," says Gary.

There are now area coordinators in all four of the areas (North, South, East and West). And volunteers working on the Green Road Reserve trap lines continue to achieve impressive results alongside the farmer who works the land, in spite of the lull during the lambing season.

Although Coatesville locals are trapping up a storm, Gary admits that the app the group uses to record

information; TrapNZ, is proving a stumbling block for some volunteers.

"People who are a little bit older aren't as au fait with technology and some are finding it difficult to use the app and record what they want. As a result area coordinators are helping people to get set up," he says.

The information recorded by the Trap NZ app is actually vital for the PFC group's funding.

"I'd like people to register their traps with the app and provide information to their hub coordinator about the successes they're having. Even if it's just walking around checking their traps . It all counts towards the volunteer hours required by Council for our funding," explains Gary.

Recently, Boyd Steel and his family have moved into the area and quickly become among the most active trappers in the community. Boyd has focused on the Riverhead Forest border trapline and MP Mark Mitchell will soon present on behalf of the PFC group to the Minister of Conservation about this work in an effort to secure funding support.

The Coatesville Scenic Reserve is the next site on the PFC group's 'to do' list. Local volunteer, Jonine Fuss, is putting her skills to work as a New Zealand orienteer recording stands of

Kauri and other significant features in the Reserve using GPS so the PFC can share them with DoC. "The reality is DoC doesn't know what's on the site. Jonine has done this work and had the topographical maps made so we can show DoC exactly what is really there," says Gary.

This month will see the PFC receive funding from Auckland Council and one of their next moves will be to put up signs at the entry and exit of Coatesville.

Gary urges anyone who hasn't watched the 'Fight for the Wild' series to do so. The series includes four 30-minute episodes and is available on TVNZ On Demand.

"It really is incredible. It's actually sometimes quite moving to see how hard people are working to bring back the natural environment. Particularly when you see what they achieve." he says.

The PFC discount offer of two A24's for the price of one, is still available for volunteers.

Team Player Wins National Volunteer Award

J

udith Quinlan is legend in the sport of hockey. Earlier this year, the Coatesville local received the 2020 Volunteer of the Year award from Hockey New Zealand.

This national award recognises the recipient's contribution to the sport and its players. Judith's volunteer work has been via North Harbour Hockey Association since her earliest days as a junior player.

Although Judith was honoured and proud to be nominated for the 2020 award, she says when she attended Hockey New Zealand's formal dinner as a finalist, she never expected to win.

"When they read my name, I didn't even hear it. It was only when my partner Mark said Oi, that's you!, that I realised I had to go up on stage."

Once on stage Judith had to listen as the presenter read a list of all the things she had done to deserve the award.

"By the end, the list had gone on for quite a while and I thought maybe I do deserve it," says the modest 31 year old.

Judith's involvement with North Harbour Hockey has been virtually a life-long commitment. As one of six children in the Quinlan family who all attended Coatesville Primary, she began playing hockey at school when she was five years old. The first team Judith coached was her brother's year-three team and that's where her 'can do' attitude of helping out got established. Her philosophy is: "You always fill in for people when they ask and you never say no. You do what you can to help other people.

And if you don't know how you'll fit it in or how to do it, you say yes anyway and work it out later," she explains Judith's volunteer work at North Harbour Hockey has included participating in working groups and committees, coaching primary school winter and summer teams, managing the ABC Division 1 team and being a founding member of the Warkworth Club Committee where she also plays in the Warkworth Women's Division 1 team.

In terms of her style as a player, the woman who is born to coach and encourage juniors turns out to be a goal-scoring demon on the field.

Although she can play every position on the team − except goalie because she doesn't like balls flying at her − somehow she always ends up in the striker line.

"I just like scoring goals," Judith says with a giggle. "I'm known for always having plasters on my knees from falling over during games because I'm trying to score goals."

Becoming a parent 10 years ago to son Cooper didn't slow her down and when daughter Molly arrived two years later, Judith simply took both of her children along to games and coaching sessions. Molly's first hockey field visit happened when she was only threedays old.

As a result of their immersion in the sport or perhaps their mother's passion for it, today both Cooper and Molly play hockey and regularly help out when asked by other teams. No surprise given their family ethos.

However, Judith admits volunteering has been a two-way street.

"I love volunteering and I think we should push it more and more.

It's given me so much knowledge.

Because of what I've learned volunteering, I decided to go to university and do a Bachelor of Sport degree. I finished it last year during lock down."

In addition to studying for her degree, Judith set up a sports business called Longridge Sports initially to assist young children to learn horse riding skills.

Longridge became the vehicle for her shift from volunteering as an individual on the sidelines and club rooms, to developing and delivering programmes that help the sport to attract and retain players from an early age.

During lockdown North Harbour Hockey approached her and asked for an online programme for junior players who were stuck at home unable to play. Judith developed Hockey At Home, a programme focused on skills and drills training to keep junior players occupied while they couldn't play.

Next, North Harbour Hockey asked her to coach smaller groups during Level 2 so junior players could still get some time on the turf. She even came up with a programme for children who were on the sidelines waiting while their siblings played.

"I enjoy developing junior players, kids who may never have played unless they were encouraged and brought through. It's so cool to have that impact. It means more to me than anything high profile."

Judith has remained committed to the sport throughout her life and today spends around 60-hours a week involved with hockey. The last word on her contribution goes to those who know her best. North Harbour Hockey say they would be lost without her and Hockey New Zealand say: "Quinlan's passion for all the participants in our game is hard to match. She gives her time so willingly, expects nothing in return, and is the true definition of all our sport's values."

ast Thursday the Upper Harbour Local Board confirmed the budget for what we will achieve in the upcoming year. The items we are funding stretch across our whole board area (including Whenuapai, Hobsonville, Greenhithe, West Harbour etc) but many affect Albany facilities often used by Coatesville residents. ∞ Library. This is hugely important to us and the lease is expiring. We are working with Panuku to find a long-term location for library services in Albany. ∞ Albany Pool disability facilities. Somewhat disappointingly, when this pool was built the facilities needed for people with disabilities to get changed and showered was not included.

Some have even resorted to getting changed in their cars. A proper changing/showering facility will be installed. ∞ Movies in parks. We plan to hold two events, one of which I would like to be in the Albany Domain. ∞ Indoor Court detailed business case. A detailed business case across Albany Tennis Park and Hooton Reserve to understand issues around a potential indoor court facility in that area. ∞ Albany Domain. We plan to upgrade the sportsfield lights in the following financial year, so plans will be made this year. ∞ Gills Reserve Albany. This will have many enhancements.

On the left-hand side from Gills Road where the concrete path ends suddenly, this will be connected up to Dairy Flat Highway. On the right, where there is a walking track to Hooton reserve, this will be upgraded with connections up Gills Road. ∞ Sanders Reserve - Design work will continue on improving the mountainbiking and walking tracks. ∞ Drinking fountains will be installed in some Albany Locations. They are planned for Albany Lakes and also Kell Park near the library. ∞ Gills Reserve and Paremoremo Scenic Reserve should have their Kauri Dieback mitigation completed and be partially reopened. ∞ Many more smaller items…around Albany and surrounds.

In addition, many of you may have seen a planting day at Hosking Reserve recently. Hosking Reserve is a 53 Ha reserve on the corner of Hobson Road and Dairy Flat Highway. Around 13,000 trees were planted on steep erosion-prone land. We do have a plan for this park, but unfortunately no funding at present to fund required access facilities (e.g. driveway and and carpark off Hobson Road) so community access will need to wait a little while longer till this is secured. It’s going to be great once it is open though, the views are 360 degrees.

very big thank you to everyone that provided feedback on Auckland Transport’s (AT) draft 10-year budget.

When the draft budget came out in March of this year, residents were left speechless that the widening of the Dairy Flat Highway (DFH) to four lanes from Stevenson’s Crescent to Gills Road and the signalisation of The Avenue and DFH intersection had lost its ringfenced funding.

However, residents were not going to take this lightly and AT received 630 submissions requesting that the Dairy Flat Highway and The Avenue project be put back on the table and funded in the final 10-year budget.

It is a direct result of this feedback that the final budget was revised, and AT allocated $12.5 million to this project.

This is great news but unfortunately the $12.5 million will not solve the congestion issues. The total cost of the project including the new two-lane road between Oteha Valley and Gills Road and the replacement of the Lucas Creek bridge is estimated to cost $53 million.

AT have indicated that the project will be delivered in a phased approach with the $12.5 million allocated to address safety and efficiency issues with the DFH and Avenue intersection. While safety is very important, the congestion is going to get a lot worse with all the surrounding development. When the 10-year budget is refreshed in three years we need to ensure that the next phase of the project i.e. widening of DFH is included and funded.

One thing that is very clear from this budget is that there is not enough money for large scale greenfield developments in Auckland and especially in Rodney where we don’t even have the basic infrastructure. Council, Government and AT need to look very carefully at giving the go ahead to large scale greenfield developments when there is no funding available for public transport and roading upgrades to address the existing congestion, otherwise we are all going to be stuck in traffic and that is not good for anyone.

CWI's Double Celebration

L

ast month the Coatesville Women's Institute (CWI) got together to celebrate two significant birthdays. The first was the Coatesville group's 80th birthday, which actually happened in 2020 but celebrations were delayed because of Covid 19. The second was the New Zealand Federation of Women's Institute's Incorporated's 100-year anniversary.

Both events justified breaking out the good china and the CWI filled the table with a delicious spread. While talk was mostly about families and local events, and naturally there was a cake to mark the occasion, the organisation has a proud history. The main object of the NZ Federation is to provide an organisation for the purpose of enabling women to take an active part in the life of the community and its development.

The Women's Institute began in New Zealand in 1921 after WWI with the motto: for town and country, and today the organisation's patron is Governor General, Dame Patsy

luten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley that shows up in common products like breads, pasta and wheat-based cereals. It is the binding agent that gives dough its elasticity, texture and strength and allows pizza bases to be thrown in the air without breaking apart. It has little or no nutritious value and is almost indigestible by the human gastrointestinal system.

In most people, gluten passes through the digestive process without any fanfare and there is no reason to remove it from the diet.

However, in a growing number of people, it triggers an inflammatory process that can present with an allergic reaction such as coeliac disease (CD) or as a milder gluten sensitivity. It is estimated that only 1% of the population has coeliac disease and for these people even the smallest trace of gluten can be extremely serious.

The inflammatory process for CD and gluten sensitivity targets the villi in the small intestine and causes these absorption sites to become damaged. There is often gut pain as a result of this but the reactions can show up anywhere including: ∞ Bowel problems such as diarrhoea, constipation, smelly faeces ∞ Gut pain 83% of gluten sensitive people have gut pain ∞ Unexplained fatigue caused by iron deficiency is a common symptom ∞ Chronic pain in joints and muscles ∞ Skin reactions including psoriasis, itching, hair loss, dermatitis ∞ Depression, anxiety ∞ Fatigue If you are suffering with these symptoms often and for no

However, these symptoms can mean other serious health issues so it is worth seeing your doctor or health professional to rule those out. Gluten sensitivity and celiac disease are pretty common and although they are both very different in how the inflammatory reaction occurs, they both cause debilitating effects in people who are affected by these issues.

Luckily these days with the increase in prevalence around the world, there are products and recipes everywhere.

If you do decide to try a gluten-free diet it is important to find other grains that provide the nutrition and fibre that you normally get from wheat, barley and rye. There are many of these available including: quinoa, sorghum, freekeh, millet, buckwheat, rice and lots more.

The secret to a happy transition is to find replacements and stick to them. Some of my favourites are OMG bread, Little Bird Macaroons and the Rebel Gluten Free Wraps.

Pizza bases and pasta are easy to find too, so really you never have to be without.
