Rose's birthday of the century
R
ose Turner celebrated her 100th birthday in style on 15 June with a party for her family and friends. Guests joined Rose and raised a glass to her amazing milestone birthday on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Fernielea CafĂŠ. According to her family, Rose was in fine form on the day. "She knew about the party and was really excited to see everyone," says son-in-law Ray Green. Some of the guests had traveled from outside Auckland, including Australia to be there. However, daughter Pamela came all the way from Cornwall in England to make the occasion extraspecial. Those who couldn't make it, like grandson David and granddaughter Cheryl, sent cards and flowers. Rose started life in the UK as one of ten children. She helped take care of twin siblings who were ten years her junior and they recently turned 90. In 1940 she married her husband Tom and lived in Woking during WWII where she worked sewing parachutes while Tom was away at the war.

In 1974 the couple moved to New Zealand and lived in Browns Bay. Tom worked for the Post Office as a part-time postman and retired five days before his ten-year anniversary in the job. Rose worked as a seamstress at Amblers, a well-known clothing alterations and dressmaking business. The couple moved to Coatesville in 1984 and sadly Tom passed away aged 85 years in 2005. Today Rose still lives independently in a granny flat on the same Ridge Road property as daughter Christina and her husband Ray. They say she has enjoyed fantastic health throughout her life and only gave up doing alterations at age 97 after some health issues cropped up. A fortnight before her party, Rose underwent a cataract operation. The timing was perfect because it successfully restored her sight so she could once again see clearly and read her own birthday cards. Continued on page 2
