oatesville Playcentre families made the most of the six sessions they had after lockdown to prepare for Christmas. At Playcentre the focus is on including family so older school-aged siblings already on holiday joined in too.

The pine cone decoration-making session on a rainy Tuesday last week, saw the kids busy with their most colourful art supplies. Hot glue guns, pipe cleaners, feathers and pompoms were used to make something special for their Christmas trees at home.

In the past, Playcentre has put up a tree in the weeks leading up to the big day, but not this year. Understandably, the celebrations are a little more low key than usual except for in the new sandpit which is being thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

are left unlocked so families in the community can enjoy the playground, three burglaries during lockdown and ongoing acts of vandalism have put that access in jeopardy. Items have been stolen, buildings damaged and locks broken. Even the new Gubba shed that was put up this year has already had one of the locks broken.

"It took us two years to raise money for the shed and get it built, so this is really upsetting," says Sarah Craig, a Playcentre parent. "We're a registered charity run by volunteers so we don't have lots of money to pay for repairs."

Please help to keep an eye on Coatesville Playcentre's grounds over the summer. Sarah says the vandalism and thefts are happening at night when no one should be on site. If you see anything going on after hours that shouldn't be, please call the Police.

lenty has already been said about the year that was 2021. But as I put the finishing touches to the 11th issue of the newsletter for 2021 (with 12-colour pages for the first time − thank you Ailsa!), I'm reminded that every issue of The Coatesville Chronicle was published and distributed this year.

Thank you to everyone who made that possible. As Wendy Whitfield used to say, without the contributors this paper would be very thin. So, thanks to everyone who helped me fill the pages with local stories. A very special

thank you goes to the businesses who continue advertising despite the challenging environment. Their support keeps the newsletter going.

Next year, The Coatesville Chronicle turns 20. We'll take a look back over the past two decades and see how things have changed. To get things started, on page 10 you'll find two recipes from previous Chronicles. One is Val Troest's best ever strawberry jam recipe, which appeared in 2005. It's the best reason there is to pick your own strawberries this summer.

For now though, it's time to look forward, turn-off the work devices and lock eyes with your loved ones.

Merry Christmas everyone. Wherever the summer takes you, please stay safe − not just Covid-free but safe on the water and on our roads. If next year's going to be a better year, we need the whole community smiling.

Fire season reminder At the time the Chronicle went to print, the fire season was still Open. But, with a long hot summer ahead, that's likley to change in the near future to Restricted before becoming Prohibited in the height of the summer. Recycling guidelines The festive season means lots of entertaining at home which also means more rubbish. If you sometimes wonder what can go into your recycling bin and what can't, the following list can all be recycled. ● Glass bottles and glass jars ● Tin, steel and aluminium cans, including empty aerosols ● Plastic bottles from your kitchen, bathroom and laundry (plastic grades 1-7) ● Clear plastic food containers ● Pizza boxes (remove any leftover food) ● Newspapers, magazines, advertising mail and envelopes ● Paper and cardboard packaging ● Christmas wrapping paper. Before recycling, remove any decorations such as ribbons and bows as these cannot be recycled. Wrapping paper can only be recycled if it passes the scrunch test - simple paper wrap can be recycled but foil or glitter-decorated paper cannot and needs to go in the general waste. ● Egg cartons ● Milk and juice cartons, including Tetra Pak ® cartons ● Before you recycle, rinse all containers. Leave lids on all bottles and containers.

Containers should be no larger than 4 litres Remove bubble wrap or plastic packaging from cardboard boxes - but tape and labels can remain.

Home security tips

If you're heading away over the holidays, check out the advice on the Police website to help keep your property safe from burglars. Go to www.police.govt.nz/news/release/ leaving-your-home-these-holidays. Obvious things include getting a neighbour to clear your letterbox and bring in your bins if you leave them out, turn on some lights so it looks like someone's home, lock sheds and remove and lock away the axe from your woodshed. Lock your gates and let your neighbours know you'll be away. Make sure your insurance is up to date and valuables aren't in plain sight. Also, make sure boats and trailers are disabled so they can't be towed away and remove valuables from inside boats.

Fun Festivities at Garden Club Gathering

or the Coatesville Gardening Club members, traffic lights have taken on a new focus – the opportunity to gather, converse, and socialise with fellow members. Most of us have sighted each other and talked on the phone. But it’s not the same as sharing interests such as gardening in person. As a club this month we visited two gardens to view members' efforts. Liz Rosie’s 7½ acres is spaciously laid out with many garden areas; it’s well groomed and maintained which is credit to her endeavours with a backdrop of covenanted native bush. Susan and Eric Haslam's garden was viewed in damp weather but the vistas were fresh, green and colourful. You follow a track through the bush alongside a stream and under the canopy of mature native specimens.

Huge hydrangea blooms and prolific flowering iceberg roses framed by trimmed buxus, display Susan’s interest in flowering plants, while her burgeoning vegetable garden shows her interest in producing and contributing to meals.

Eric is part of the working team and should take credit too.

Sixty five members assembled for the annual Christmas luncheon at Black cottage recently. Fresh from lockdown, the serving staff were in top form and the chefs excelled. It 3 great to see so many laughing and smiling while enjoying was the atmosphere created, as well as the wonderful food.

Our thanks to Banu and Sulo for the smooth operation and congenial ambience that prevailed. Prize winners for the year's bloom and vegetable competitions were announced: Helen Forsyth and Richard Bampton excelled in the vegetable section, while Helen again and Shirley Jensen came through in the flower displays. Great work – and well deserved honours.

All these activities and more promise to be part of our 2022 programme. Have an enjoyable festive season and take care.

The first sign which is on the way into Coatesville outside the kennels on C-R Hway is designed to promote the group's work to eradicate pest animals like rats, possums and stoats to encourage native species like the Kiwi back into the area. Sandpit a highlight in 2021

W

hat a quick end to the term! We have enjoyed our two weeks back and the kids got into our new sandpit everyday, no matter the weather! We had the enjoyment of some of our big school kids joining us as we officially opened the sandpit and they wasted no time in digging right to the bottom! The change in alert levels meant we were able to have our families get together at the weekend to celebrate the end of the year with pizza and a visit from Santa. It was lovely to round out the year with a casual social event and to catch up with past and present members. We are also grateful to Svend and Nicola from Santa’s Workshop who recently donated a box of handmade wooden toys to our centre following the news of our lockdown break ins. We are very appreciative of the support we have received from the community! We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and we look forward to reopening on 8 February 2022.

School Year In Summary

W

e have come to the end of a quite surreal year! 2021 was the year where Covid-19 had an even more pronounced impact on education than in 2020. And we felt last year was disrupted!

When we reflect upon the year it is with some bemusement. The interrupted start to the year was, promisingly, followed by a settled period of learning throughout the middle months. However, once we hit August the uniqueness of the year extended all the way to the end.

But there was a shining light. We did return and reopen full time for the last four weeks with the majority of students. It gave us the chance to finish the year with some normality − even though the circumstances involved strict class bubbles, parents kept off site, staggered break times and Yr 4-6 mask wearing indoors at all times.

We adapted. We worked our way through it. We just don’t want to have to do it again!

But ending the year on a positive note will certainly help us prepare and be ready for a great start to 2022.

After a long period of restriction impacting teaching and learning, we are warmed up and ready to sprint out of the starting blocks in early February!

Here’s hoping!

Our People Our staff have adapted a number of times during the year. Distance learning is not most teacher’s preference! It is limited in a number of ways, but our staff delivered what was needed for our students and their families. I'd like to thank them for their dedication under

difficult circumstances.

Our students embraced the return to school superbly well over recent weeks. The energy, the smiles, the voices, the uniqueness of each individual, … that is what makes the school hum. With only a handful of students onsite during ‘bubble school’, the void that is created is very apparent. I thank the children for coming back and re-energising our school for 2022.

Our BOT continue to provide the tools, the resources and the support to our staff and students. They are extremely dedicated to our school and work very hard to facilitate excellent learning outcomes for our children.

I thank them for their ongoing commitment to our school.

Our parents/caregivers have been extremely flexible throughout a difficult period. They have continued to support the staff and their children through a range of challenging circumstances. So many normal aspects of school life have been affected this year. I thank the parents/caregivers profusely for their patience and understanding − and their commitment to their children’s learning.

Our projects We have managed to make some really positive changes to our school facilities and the environment during his year. In January we created some wonderful new paths and carparks for the school, whilst also reshaping the environment.

We have since added new artificial turf outside our junior block and in the

assembly area. Very successful!

Our administration block is finally getting an upgrade! It was meant to start sooner but I am just happy we are about to get started! Not a total change for the admin but some well deserved enhancement of our main office and foyer, the sickbay and staff toilets and a new kitchen for the staffroom. We will be ready to enjoy our newly refurbished spaces when school starts next year.

And 2022 will bring further outdoor enhancements and a new plan to develop more learning spaces!

Bring it on!

Where to in 2022?

We are optimistic for the year ahead.

At the start we will quickly regain momentum with learning. Distance learning is a possibility we need to be prepared for, but we all want to get the year started onsite and have excitement and urgency in reconnecting for a fresh beginning.

It will certainly be a challenge for everyone to work together to try and overcome the loss of optimum learning time over the last several months. But we can do it!

On behalf of the staff, students of Coatesville School I wish all the readers of the Coatesville Chronicle a wonderful Christmas and a safe New Year full of freedom!

Let us hope the opportunity is there for us all to enjoy some weeks of great weather, very good health, relaxation and excitement, preparing us for a much more prosperous 2022.

Ho-Ho-Ho, Santa's been so busy!

C

oatesville's very own Santa has had another huge year, making wooden toys for New Zealand's children. The Santa Workshop on Coatesville-Riverhead Highway has been a hive of industry with saws, lathes and sanders being put to expert use by local Santa, Svend Fanefjord.

As if 2021 hasn't been tricky enough with the long lockdown in

Auckland, Santa Svend hasn't been well. Not that he complains or talks about his problems, no chance. He's too busy putting his energies into toymaking because that's his absolute passion.

As a result, he still managed to make a sleigh-full of toys − 1800 in total − during 2021!

That amount is certainly impressive but Svend has been making toys for years. When asked how many he has made overall, with a twinkle in his Santa eyes, Svend says 19,000.

On the day The Chronicle visited the workshop to catch up with Santa and Mrs Claus (Nicola), Coatesville local Murray Barr arrived to collect a stack of boxes that he and wife Shirley were taking to Kerikeri. These toys will be distributed to children in need throughout the Far North.

Collections were also made by the Salvation Army, Foster Hope and the Auckland City Mission.

This year, after hearing about the three Playcentre burglaries, Santa also donated a box of toys to Coatesville children to enjoy.

You might think that after hand-making, packing and dispatching 1800 toys while dealing with poor health, Santa might put his feet up for the summer and take a well-deserved rest. But, according to Nicola, although he's partial to the occasional jigsaw, Santa doesn't enjoy sitting around with nothing to do. That's why he's already busy making toys for Christmas 2022.

eason's Greetings! As we navigate our way through the new traffic light system, we are faced with new challenges that we would not have anticipated 12 months ago. As Aucklanders, we are now one of the most vaccinated cities in the world, but as we open to the rest of the country, not everybody is welcoming us with open arms. One thing we are all united on is having a relaxing break over the Christmas period. Below are a couple of quick updates.

The new bus stops on Coatesville Riverhead Highway by Lewis Lane and Gold flats are now scheduled to start construction at the end of January 2022. While traffic volumes are returning to normal, passenger numbers on public transport across Auckland are still very low. If you are heading into the city to help support the struggling bars and restaurants and catching up with friends, please remember the most relaxing and environmentally friendly way to travel is by bus. The buses have never been cleaner, and you may even have the bus to yourself.

There have been several abandoned cars on Dairy Flat Highway (DFH) over the last month. Auckland Transport are responsible for removing and disposing of abandoned vehicles and there are several steps that AT must follow lawfully before removing an abandoned vehicle. This is not a quick

For the abandoned car on DFH after Potters Road travelling North, this has rolled on the berm and is on a very dangerous angle around a sharp corner. over summer, going back to doing the things we love doing, as we transition into a new way of managing Covid-19.

Our approach so far has served us well. We’re entering this new phase betterplaced than many other countries, with high vaccination rates, a strong economy, and fewer hospitalisations and deaths. Many countries that recently removed restrictions are now putting them back in place as they face a surge in fourth and fifth waves.

I worry about my elderly parents in the Netherlands, where they are again seeing tens of thousands of new Covid-19 cases daily, health systems getting overwhelmed and have just started another lockdown over Christmas.

Meanwhile in New Zealand, our decisive action in August slowed the spread and bought us time to drive up vaccination rates. The entire country recently reached the 90% fully vaccinated milestone – one of the highest vaccination rates in the world.

That is an amazing response, and I thank all of you who have stepped up.

At the end of 2021 and with less than a week to Christmas, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year filled with hope and silver linings.

Summer recipes Val Troest's Best Ever Strawberry Jam, printed in the Chronicle's March issue, 2005.

Ingredients ∞ 2 kg of strawberries ∞ 2.5 kg of sugar ∞ 1 tsp of tartaric acid ∞ a knob of butter Method Rub pot with butter. Put half the strawberries in the pot (defrost first if using frozen) and simmer till soft, then mash thoroughly. Add the rest of the strawberries and the knob of butter. Add sugar and stir. Bring to the boil and boil for six minutes. Stir in acid and boil a further six minutes.

Remove from the heat and stand for 10-15 minutes.

Pour into sterilised jars and seal.

Kit Kat and Kahlua Ice Cream This recipe by Liz Curtis appeared in the Chronicle's January issue, 2009.

Liz shared her fantastic recipes with Chronicle readers for years. This easy dessert is bound to be a crowd pleaser.

Ingredients ∞ 500 ml cream ∞ 395 g can of condensed milk ∞ 3 Tbs Kahlua or other coffee-flavoured liqueur ∞ 3 x 45 g Kit Kats Method Line a 22cm x 11cm metal loaf tin with cling wrap. Using an electric beater, beat together cream and condensed milk until slightly thickened. This will take 8-10 minutes. Fold in broken pieces of Kit Kat along with Kahlua. Pour into tin and freeze over night until firm. Serve with fresh or frozen berries.

ith another year of uncertainty and many highs and lows behind us, let’s enjoy this special time relaxing and spending quality time with our family and friends.

I want to say a huge thank you to all the people I have met this year from reconnecting with past clients to the many new friends and clients I have made in 2021. Thank you for working with me!

The beginning of this year saw the opening of our new Bayleys office in central Coatesville (just along from the Black Cottage café towards Sunnyside Road) which has been a massive attribute allowing everybody to gather for events, meetings or just to catch up with me and have a chat around the market or their property. Between Chelsea, Ani and myself, there is always someone here to help.

I thought I’d finish off the year with a few Coatesville real estate sales statistics taken from the REINZ (Real Estate Institute of New Zealand). In 2021 there were 77 sales of which 51 were bare land blocks which is a huge number compared to previous years. Of the 26 properties with homes that have sold in Coatesville, three are between $1–2 million, seven between $2–3 million dollars, seven between $3–4 million, four between $4–5 million, three between $5–6 million and two above $6 million.

From July onwards, there were a large number of active buyers who had sold and were keen to purchase, however vendors were still a little hesitant to come to market so I spent my time doing ‘off market’ deals! There are many ways to get the right result. Moving into 2022 there is no crystal ball, however with MIQ shortening their timeframe and home isolation on the horizon, I feel this will kickstart the expats returning to New Zealand which in turn will reflect and continue the momentum.
