T

he chance to mix and mingle with neighbours on the Coatesville reserve attracted a large crowd on Friday, 6 December and the weather was perfect!

The CRRA committee provided a delicious barbecue and chefs Iain Graham and Jonesey (shown right) manned the grill, producing results good enough for a Masterchef nod.

The special guest who arrived by fire engine proved extremely popular with the youngsters. And the lolly scramble outside the hall was almost too exciting for some.

CRRA chairman Mike Rowe helped calm the minor stampede before it broke out.

rollout. In his speech he said: "Coatesville is only the second addition to the UFB programme with a community contribution and the only one where residents have mobilised, fundraised and contributed to the expansion of the UFB footprint. Chorus is already in detailed planning to start building in mid-2021 and targeting completion within 12 months."

So we ended the year with some welcome good news.

here's only a week left until Christmas Day and less than a fortnight left in of 2020. What a relief it will be to wave this year goodbye.

Saying that, it seems we've still got lots to be thankful for. So far this summer we've had enough fine weather to get outside and enjoy BBQs and the first swims of the season, but we've also had enough rain to top up the water tanks and after last year's drought, that is something I will never again take for granted.

As the holidays get started, there's bound to be a lot of traffic on the roads as people head off on their family vacations. Perhaps one of the benefits of learning to drive at 60kmph on the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway after receiving too many speeding tickets, is that we might all be less likely to speed on the open road.

In this issue there's lots to read about.

I spoke to Erica Dawson, a true-blue Coatesvillian – born and raised here – who's also an Olympic sailor. Erica is back home for Christmas and excited

about attending the Olympics in Tokyo in July and August next year.

Erica and her sailing partner Micah Wilkinson are seeking sponsors to help fund their Olympic campaign.

Although they're partly funded by the Government, their high equipment costs means the amount they receive is still short of what they need to get to Tokyo. Any individuals or businesses who want to partner with the team in their quest to win an Olympic medal for New Zealand, should email; erica.dawson109@gmail.com This month I also spoke to Mark Vette – the man who trained dogs to drive a car and fly a plane – about what owners need to consider when exercising their dogs in public places.

His advice is golden, especially if you plan to add a puppy to your family in the future.

Westlake Boys' Year 13 Class of 2020 This group of Year 13 students from Westlake Boys High School celebrated the end of their school days on 6 December at Westlake's graduation dinner with around 600 students and parents. But there's something a bit special about these lads because all of them are allumni of our esteemed Coatesville Primary School. Whether they spent all or some of their junior years locally, Coatesville Primary has had an impact on them all. Five of the seven still live in Coatesville but probably not for long. Some say they're off to university while others are taking a gap year.

Whatever their plans, they're likely to head off in different directions in 2021. Good luck guys with whatever you decide to do next.

Settlers Hall Gets Back to Normal The Coatesville Hall is certainly back in business after the impacts of Covid-19 earlier in the year. All of our regular users, especially our community users are back to normal.

Bookings for weddings have begun to return with a good number of dates through the summer season now in place. These bookings provide the funding for ensuring we can provide the facility to the Coatesville community users at no cost. They provide the funds to keep the hall well maintained, and any excess is channeled back into community projects.

Hall users have remarked very positively on the impact the acoustic panels had on the echo and reverberation we used to have in the hall, and the new roof and refreshed interior painting have kept the hall in great condition.

There are always places for locals to book their birthday parties, weddings and other events (at discounted rates), but plan well ahead – Coatesville Hall is a very popular venue for locals and people from overseas. Last year we had a previous Coatesville resident now living in London come back to have her wedding in our lovely old hall.

Thank You Very Much!

Coatesville School Principal Richard Johnson had good reason to smile earlier this month when the CRRA made an unexpected donation to the school. The large cheque – shown above – isn't only impressive because of its actual size, the amount was cause for a sharp intake of breath, too.

CRRA chairman Mike Rowe says the gesture was made possible by the CRRA UFB fundraising sub committee's hard work. "In the final analysis we ended up with this amount in surplus so we've donated it to the school because they're the hub of our community and in their hands it will benefit so many people."

Richard Johnson was delighted with the CRRA decision and excited about what the school could achieve with the amount.

"Our school is hugely grateful to the Coatesville Residents and Ratepayers' Association for their extremely generous donation of $7855. It was a wonderful Christmas gift to the school and we will spend it wisely to benefit the school and our wider community. Thank you so much for thinking of us!"

What did 2020 bring to Coatesville School?

W

hat a year! We dealt with great uncertainty and grave concerns. There was plenty to ponder, plan for and react to, during a turbulent past few months. But thankfully we end 2020 confident of a positive outlook for the start of 2021. Bring on a wonderful new year!

At Coatesville School we coped well with the disruption to our normal school lives — the restrictions, the new expectations and the Alert Levels, which we all became familiar with. There were negative impacts — especially the cancellation of many school events and gathering opportunities, and the loss of momentum with learning for students and teachers.

But overall the students, staff and community adapted to the challenges extremely well, working very hard to negate any barriers, to complete an ultimately successful year.

Thank you to our wonderful staff for the huge effort and dedication they bring to every week! Thank you to our brilliant students for the enthusiasm and motivation they share with us daily! Thank you to parents, caregivers, families, neighbours, who provide the support and encouragement for those amazing kids!

New School Facilities There have been some obvious changes around school this year. We started the year with a brand new artificial turf on our court, to support a whole range of sports and general play. It looks great and is excellent to play on. So good that we are looking at adding more turf to other hard surface areas early next year!

Two senior classrooms and our old library were redeveloped into exciting new teaching and learning spaces. We can also use one of the spaces for whole school assemblies and big events when the weather doesn’t allow us outside.

We now have a major redevelopment of our administration area planned for 2021, with the front office, sick bay, toilets and staffroom being significantly remodeled. This is being funded through a special grant from the Ministry of Education.

Our main school path is also going to be replaced over the coming months to provide a more functional thoroughfare for families and visitors.

While the novelty factor was there initially, and everyone learned a lot about how to teach and learn from a distance, I feel most of us are a lot happier coming to school each day and interacting in the real world!

Non-events!

Events and schedules just didn’t go ahead for obvious reasons! Team sports all had very limited seasons — cut short (twice) in many cases! Our school cross country was postponed and then finally cancelled. So there was plenty of disappointment for the children who looked forward to these and other events.

But as things have brightened across the nation so have things started to flourish once again. Our Student and Whanau Leaders (Yr 6s) have become more capable of running successful events throughout the school. Our Athletics team recently performed exceptionally at the Northern Bays Schools athletic event finishing in third place overall. Great effort. Music events, which were also postponed several times, were rescheduled and our choir and marimba groups finally got to perform at big events in Term 4. The months of practising finally paid off as the children got to perform on the big stage at last!

And on a hugely positive note, despite the uncertainty and the real possibility of an Ag Day closed to the public, we had a fantastic day a few weeks ago. The event was well supported by the wider community and we raised a very good sum of money too. In a crazy year it was tremendous to be able to feel like it was a ‘normal’ Ag Day for everyone.

What does 2021 hold for Coatesville School?

We have staff, students and a BOT who are very keen and ready for a full, uninterrupted year. We are already wellprepared to start the year with enormous excitement, energy and focus — 2021 will be a great one!

From Coatesville School, we wish all the readers of the Coatesville Chronicle a fantastically enjoyable Christmas and a superb New Year! Stay safe and have a magnificent few months. You deserve it!

tate of the art pest animal trap manufacturer Good Nature has teamed up with Pest Free Coatesville in collaboration that will give the Coatesville group's members access to high-tech traps.

At last count, more than 200 Coatesville residents had joined the PFC group and are registered on Trap NZ, which monitors trap locations and the number of kills.

Pest animal trapping gurus, Adam Cording and Darren Peters from Good Nature attended a workshop in Coatesville earlier this month to showcase the company's A24 trap. Both men are highly experienced in the conservation field. Darren was DOC's global conservation manager and created the widely used DOC 200 trap.

The A24 is more powerful and is Good Nature's rat/stoat trap that uses Chirp technology to reset itself after each kill. "Prior to the design, traps had to be rest monthly," Darren explained.

Good Nature claim the A24 generates irreversible unconsciousness immediately, producing an A-class humane kill (death occurring within 30 seconds). These traps cost $195 but any PFC member who buys one will get an added bonus, says leader, Gary Langridge.

Erica Dawson: Our Local Olympian Tell us about your connection with Coatesville.

Coatesville is where I was born, where I went to school. It is and always will be home for me. I spent my whole childhood there, and many of the best friends I still have today were my friends from Coatesville Primary. I left a year and a half ago when my parents decided to try living the city life for a while and moved into an apartment in town (I secretly think they just wanted an excuse to make me leave home!)

However, I know they will be back. The animals are still there waiting for them!

How did you get into sailing and how did your interest reach such an elite level?

Sailing is a family sport, my dad sails and my uncle Rod is a professional sailor (also a Coatesvillian!) My friend Amber and I started together at the same time and I loved it and happened to be quite good at it, so I just keep turning up and racing at school level. It wasn’t until I finished high school that I really formed the dream of competing in an Olympics. I have always been surrounded by these top athletes and inspiring people, and I started to think and believe it's possible for myself.

When I teamed up with Micah, we started with a very clear and strong goal. Qualify for the Olympics and win a medal for New Zealand. I have also been very lucky to have had such a supportive family throughout the years. n 2012 at age 17 you won the Starling national title, and you're still the only female sailor to win this class. What did this mean for your sailing career?

The starling nationals is an iconic NZ boat, with all the top youth sailors in NZ competing so it was a great honour to win the NZ title. With former winners such as Russell Coutts and Peter Burling wining it, I like to think my winning it can inspire other young girls, but I have no doubt another female will be backing it up soon!

Originally you aimed to sail at the Olympics in the 49er class but moved to Nacra 17 and now sail with partner Micah Wilkinson. Tell us about that?

I had a few bumpy years of switching sailing partners. It was a point in my sailing career where I was feeling really good in the 49erFX and ready to go all in and commit everything.

So it was frustrating for a while there as I was searching for a new sailing partner. With no luck in the FX, Micah approached me to ask me if I wanted to crew for him in the Nacra 17 — a foiling catermaran. Until then, I had always been a skipper, so at first I wasn’t sure. But, after a few sails, I knew I would love the crewing and went all in. Micah and I work very well as a team — we have strengths in different areas, and they complement each other on the race course. We also had very clear goals from the beginning, so we can trust that we're always going to put 100 percent into the campaign.

What sort of training is required to get to your level?

When we're racing, we're normally on the water for five hours a day for six days in a row. But I need to be very powerful for much of each race. So I need to have both endurance and power fitness.

Changing to crewing has required me to become a lot stronger and fitter. A normal, heavy training week at home looks like 3 sessions in the gym, 3 sessions of cardio (you might see me biking through Coatesville on a Saturday!), and 4-5 days training on the water. By the end of the week I am normally very tired and need to recover for the next week.

How did it feel to qualify for your first Olympic Games?

We had a very late run in to our Olympic trials, only teaming up 8 months earlier. It meant we had to really prioritise our training to improve as quick as possible.

We put our best performance down at the final trial, placing 7th at the World Champs and becoming the top Kiwi boat and giving us a shot at selection. It was an unreal feeling when we found out we had qualified.

Here was something we each had been working towards for many years and we were going to get the chance to represent NZ at the games. So we were on a massive high. When we found out the games were postponed, it was a lot to take in. However since we're a new team it gave us a whole extra year to prepare and keep improving.

How are you feeling about the upcoming July-August Olympics? Has the disruption caused by COVID-19 changed anything?

It has meant a whole lot more time in NZ. So we have been searching for Japan-like swell — doing a monthly team camp up in Tutukaka, which has been awesome for our wavy sailing technique.

We are currently in Sydney training with the Olympic Silver medalist Australian team. We have been learning heaps and loving lining up against a fast boat.

We will arrive home and out of quarantine on Christmas Eve, hungrier than ever for the Games. ∞

Scouts return to the great outdoors

very disjointed year saw Cub and Scout weekly meetings being held via zoom, thanks to Covid-19, for much of Terms 2 and 3. Although it was great for everyone to catch up each week it was quite tricky to hold productive sessions and of course all outdoor activities were off limits With restrictions finally lifted, Term 4 saw Coatesville Scout Group back into full swing with real activities!

The first night began with the judging of the “Great Pallet Challenge”. The scouts had been set a challenge to undertake during the school holidays; to make a useful item using only the wood obtained from old pallets. The six items that made it to judging were a bird house, a storage box for LP records, a house for rabbits, a layered herb garden, a rolling storage box and a table and chair set. Everyone who participated won a special badge depicting a pile of pallets.

The first weekend in November saw our first camp of the year which was keenly attended despite an ominous weather forecast. After lunch on

Saturday we split into two groups and went for a hike. The older scouts went to see Gary from Pest Free Coatesville who showed them the trap lines on Hartway Grove and explained how they worked. The cubs and junior scouts went into Riverhead Forest for an orienteering hike learning to use compass bearings. Both groups were back at camp by 4pm. Unfortunately, no sooner had we finished dinner than the rain started, drizzle at first but steadily building up to heavy downpours. It was decided that an

parents who helped out and made the camp so successful and also a massive thanks to Owen and Carol for allowing us to camp on their property.

Our group bonfire night was delayed but finally took place on 17 November.

The Cubs made 2 Guys this year and the scouts managed to get their 3 small fires going. The BBQs worked flat out and the buffet dinner was eaten as the bonfire raged away, consuming both Guys and everything else in the pile. Hot embers were transferred to the small fire pits and marshmallows were roasted to complete another very successful event with virtually all cubs and scouts and most parents attending.

Scouts have a Survival Camp early in December before our Group BBQ as a finale for a severely disrupted year. ∞

Mealtime

early night in the tents was best for everyone. Unbelievable! A camp with everyone in bed before 9pm. The rain became torrential during the night but everyone survived, nobody got soaked and some even seemed cheerful next morning. The sun finally broke through around noon on Sunday providing some hot sunny weather for the water slide which was a real highlight before lunch.

Going Public with your Dog A n off-lead dog walk on the Coatesville Reserve took a terrifying turn for dog owner Jenny Farmer recently when her two-year-old Weimaraner, Sylvie, was mauled by two dogs.

Sylvie needed vet treatment for deep bite wounds and Jenny made a complaint to Animal Management who are looking into the matter.

Events like this highlight the need for all dog owners to be aware of their responsibilities when exercising dogs in public places. And with fine weather and holidays now in full swing, Animal Management statistics show they receive the most complaints at this time of year.

Animal behaviourist Mark Vette has treated thousands of dogs over the 40-plus years of his career and says many of the behavioural problems that lead to dog-dog aggression stem from mal-socialisation.

“The important thing when your dog is off lead is to know that it can meet and greet other dogs in a sociable manner," says Mark. "This is when they come in and sniff the groin and rear end of other dogs. This actually releases appeasing pheromones that have a calming effect. I call it the doggy ‘handshake’.”

Although it might seem like the natural response in all doggy social encounters, the ‘handshake’ is learned during the formative months in a dog’s development – between 2 and 4 months of age – through contact with other canines.

“At this time, around 80 per cent of the dog’s brain is wiring up and it’s the easiest time to teach your pups and shape your adult dogs' futures,” he says.

The lessons learned during this developmental window also form the framework dogs use to interpret the behaviour of other dogs and work out how to respond.

“Dogs are 90 percent postural communicators. They’re already communicating with dogs that

are 100-metres away through the position of their tail, their stare and the directness of their approach. A mal-socialised dog can misread those signs. The other part is what is your dog doing with its posture?”

Mark says a common behaviour seen in malsocialised dogs is a rushbluff greeting when a dog races over to another dog, barks and lunges even when it’s on-lead. He says really the dog is unsure of how to react, so it tries to displace the other dog.

Mid-puberty large breed males, particularly those that are left entire (not desexed) between 5-18 months old, can begin to display dominance behaviour like standing over other dogs. This can become dog-dog aggression without training so needs prompt attention.

“Desexing can help to curb some of this behaviour but these dogs need training because there’s often a strength mismatch between the dog and owner and the dog can end up overpowering the owner.”

Mark says owners should respond to all signs of dominance behaviour with training to prevent dominance becoming aggression. Interestingly, dogs showing signs of dominance should not be allowed up high – on furniture or beds – because this strengthens their sense of literally being the ‘top dog’.

"By investing time and training during the 2-4 month window, the critical pup formative period, owners can avoid a difficult puberty stage 5-18months. Owners need to get control in the early stages. If you don’t, you can do it later but it’s much harder work," says Mark.

So, what do you do if your dog gets into a fight in a public place? Ideally there will be an owner for each dog.

Mark says assess which dog is the dominant aggressor then go behind it and pick up its back legs.

“This will give a momentary release and you can wheelbarrow the dog away, gradually working your hands up to its collar to secure it on a lead. Don’t rely on the fight being over because it can return to attack again. If you go straight for the collar you can get a redirection and end up being bitten. There are risks involved in getting involved in a dog fight so assess these carefully.

Most importantly, learn to prevent fights happening through reading body language and developing your situational awareness – what’s happening around you that might contribute to a fight and intervene early."

Mark says every owner, no matter how confident they feel that they’re in control of their dog, needs to have a lead with them when walking in public. Those with dogs that are prone to aggression should stay away from dog parks until they are retrained and socialised.

Garden Club Celebrates 2020 in Style

n Sunday, 15 November, the Garden Club members gathered early morning and were bussed (and a few went in cars) to Tauranga for the annual overnighter (in reality it was three nights) something we always look forward to.

The Bloom Board and Produce Table winners for the year were announced at the luncheon — Helen Forsyth and Richard Bampton respectively. They deserved the round of applause for consistency and presentation in reality or by photograph! Committee members were thanked, as were retiring officer holders Judith Howard (from 15 wonderful years as Secretary and Wendy Johnston recently for eight years of Bloom and Produce competition task) – we will welcome them as regular attendees in the future. 2020 has been a year full of challenges and disruptions – all of which we have coped with… so we look forward to a more settled year in 2021 for us all.

Rodney Local Board Update

I

t is hard to believe that 2020 is almost over. The next couple of years are going to be challenging for Council with the well-publicised budget shortfall. One positive is that we have our Rodney Local Board transport targeted rate that is ringfenced for spending within the Dairy Flat Subdivision and can't be 'touched'

by Council as they slash the budgets across all sectors.

At our last Local Board business meeting of the year we approved the funding of two new bus stops on the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway for the 126-bus route out of this targeted rate. Unfortunately, Auckland Transport (AT) do not have any adopted rural guidelines and these bus stops are very much of an urban design with footpaths and a pram crossing, so they don't come cheap.

They are located by Gold Flats and Lewis Lane. AT recommended this location as the sight lines are good.

I think we need to explore options around how commuters can walk and cycle safely to these bus stops.

The patronage of the 126-bus service has exceeded expectations and even with Covid there were over 83,000 boardings from March 19 to September 20. So, as you go out to celebrate in town over the festive period, please remember the 126-bus service.

On another note, you may have

seen on Facebook that WaterCare are increasing the prices of water at the tanker filling stations from $1.40 to $3.90 per 1000 litres of water. This price increase comes into effect on 1 March 2021. From my understanding, the main cost of getting your tanks refilled is the tanker and labour, not the actual cost of the water so hopefully the price increase for getting our tanks refilled does not also double.

The good news is that Watercare are opening three more filling stations over summer which will help to ease the long wait for tank refills during the dry season.

ell, what a year this has been! The positive of Level 4 lockdown was being given time to stop and smell the roses, spend time with our lockdown family and time for good old Kiwi DIY. I recognise that this year and Lockdown has also caused many people huge stress and anxiety and I hope for all of us that the end of 2020 and the new beginning of 2021 will bring, Christmas allowing special time to be with our family and friends followed by well-deserved and needed down time to do what we love to do whether it be reading books, going to the beach or simply a walk around the block.
