Coatesville UFB Within Reach!

o Coatesville! A massive “Thank You Coatesville” for your UFB pledges – we are a huge 70% of the way towards our fundraising goal. What a community effort in such a short amount of time! It's now truly a case of “Pledge it or lose it” for Coatesville to be included in the Chorus/Crown UFB roll-out to approximately 640 properties. The community has responded VERY positively. Pledges from private households plus contributions from local and not-so-local businesses have helped us close in on our community contribution goal of $300,000! You've been incredible, but do not stop now! The CRRA has set-up a UFB committee which is dedicated to making sure all the households in the allocated UFB map from Chorus are notified and can join this initiative. To that end we have been active on social media via our Facebook posts; have a dedicated tab on our website with FAQ and have completed two mailbox drops. We have also gone old-fashioned and done a lot of doorknocking. We have representatives from the Chinese community working alongside us to make sure the message reaches all who are eligible. Further to that, we have cast a wider net by approaching local businesses and beyond for added contributions. Despite all of the above, around half of the homes and businesses in the zone map are yet to pledge – but we are working hard to get in touch with them all. We ask that anyone who has pledged reach out to neighbours or friends in the community to make sure they JOIN us and PLEDGE so we do not lose this opportunity. The end of August is also the end of the time frame allocated by Chorus. We are working on putting a case for an extension given the short “call-

affodils are an encouraging sight at this time of year. They inject muchneeded colour into winter's dull palette and remind us that spring isn't far away. The promise of baby lambs, new foliage and more sunshine, gives us all something to look forward to as we wait for the seasons to change. But the recent Level 3 lockdown changed almost everything - overnight. Local businesses responded immediately with systems at the ready for click and collect transactions and clever crafters got busy making face masks. People seemed more relaxed this time round, although that's probably because we know how to lockdown. There's a lot of bubble-talk, walking, baking and dealing with what the new Chorus ad calls bad net for people working from home. Few things can turn your hair grey faster than sharing bad net with the family while on a deadline. Sadly, many school balls have been postponed again or cancelled. And the ripple effect of Covid-19 continues to spread throughout the community. The new date for the general election even has an impact in
Coatesville. That's because 17 October is also Coatesville School's Ag Day. So, all the best to organisers of both events who will have to deal with more disruption than usual. If you're still wondering who to vote for in the Kaipara ki Mahurangi (Helensville) electorate, I invited the five candidates to tell us about themselves this month. You can read about the people behind the parties on pages 6-8 and they're an interesting bunch. The Lifestyle Vet Laura Schwerdtfeger has advice for school families who are raising orphaned lambs on page 10. Laura gets calls each year for help treating a condition called abomasal bloat caused by overfeeding. Her item explains how to avoid it. And, if you're wondering how to weigh your lambs, she says a luggage scale and a towel with four holes cut for the legs, works a treat. AUGUST NEWS CCGC Update
As Jo McCarroll (editor of the NZ Gardener publication shown right) said, “Gardeners go on forever” and a club member in my hearing finished off with, "and eventually go to seed!” Jo entertained us for 50 minutes at our August meeting with amusing stories about the history of the magazine, which has been published continuously for 76 years. It was given special sanction over the war period during a paper shortage, because it inspired people to contribute to the war effort - much like in 2020 as lockdown struck and found us trying to make our households self-sufficient with home grown vegetables. We loved the orange agapanthus story, the original subscriber from Christchurch and having enough potatoes planted for the family when you are 100 years old. Thanks, Jo, for sharing your gardening
stories and thank you Tony Peek for arranging this visit. Club activities aren’t the only passion of our members; community effort saw Wildwood have a great planting spree of donated natives and will end up with 650 plants planted this year on the site. Mansion House volunteers have been across to Kawau and have continued their winter work around the Mansion House gardens, and a Ladies Coffee Catch-Up morning at a local café will start up this month. Not to be outdone, a Blokes Shed Group for male members will also function. Club members will be informed soon how they can participate. Jenny Hunter

he first ever drop-off weekend for Kate and Bex Annual Clothes Swap 2020, was a huge success. The weather was freezing, but the fabulous team of volunteers were kept warm over the three days by sorting and folding all the clothes that came in. We had over 250 drop offs, and over 4000 items of clothing! There were so many incredible items, lots still with labels on. All sizes, styles and tastes – ballgowns, new boots still in their boxes, maternity wear, fabulous swimwear, jackets, jumpers and more, there truly is something for everyone at the swap. Tickets for the famous Ultimate Raffle were very popular. 'A spoily weekend away for two, in Raglan in The Round Tent, a luxurious Mongolian Yurt, including a 90-minute couple's massage and a luxury hamper, with everything you need for a gorgeous weekend’. Pest Plant: Tradescantia

his month our targeted weed is Tradescantia, also known today as Wandering Willie (previously called Wandering Jew). Tradescantia fluminensis was introduced to New Zealand as house plants. The various variegated colours were popular and I have to confess that in a former life running a house plant nursery, I grew thousands of them. The problem is that after a while they lose their colour, revert to plain green, at which point people chucked them out and now they are a weed widely spread through Coatesville. It forms a dense mat that in native areas stops most native plant revegetation and, in the garden, inhibits other plant growth. It’s not known to spread by seed in New Zealand but makes up for that by growing aggressively as a dense mat and by also being easily spread physically. The tiniest bit transferred on stock hooves, from your mower or any other machinery will quickly establish another patch. It can also cause dermatitis in dogs and other animals. Getting rid of it is a bit of a mission and takes time. If you only have a small patch, with frequent hand weeding you might get on top of it. Remember, the smallest piece of stem will grow so put all your weeded material into a bag to go to landfill or bury it in a 50cm-deep hole. Don’t try to compost it because you will never get all of it to decompose and any pieces that aren’t will carry on growing when you use your compost. The chemical options are Triclopyr-based sprays like Grazon, Metsulfuron-methy based which includes MSF600 and Escort, Amitrole, or Glyphosate. All except Glyphosate will leave a residual in the ground which can affect other plants close to where you are spraying as will the spray drift. They can also wash into waterways so you need to be careful using them. My preferred method is to rake up the mat of material as much as possible and dispose of it as mentioned above. This gets rid of the bulk of the weed then spotspray the regrowth as it comes through. Using this method you will use a lot less chemical than spraying the Tradescantia en masse. Spray with Glyphosate at three-times the recommended strength. Once again, be super careful because at that concentration, any drift could affect nearby plants. Be prepared to keep up your spot spraying for at least 2 years to get on top of it but it will be well worth the effort.

Who's on the ballot in Kaipara ki Mahurangi ? Chris Penk National Party

M
hris Penk is proud to be the National Party candidate for the new Kaipara ki Mahurangi electorate, based on the existing Helensville electorate that he currently serves as local MP. Before entering Parliament in 2017, Chris had served as an officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy, first at sea on frigate Te Kaha and then as an aide to the Governor-General. He then joined the Australian navy and worked as a submarine navigator and on Operation Iraqi Freedom. The balance of his pre-Parliament working life was spent as a lawyer, developing skills to advocate for constituents and communities. On a more personal note, Chris is a husband, father and dog owner, living towards the south of the Helensville electorate in the Waitakere area. He says he has enjoyed going into bat for Coatesville and surrounding areas as a local MP these past three years. "On some issues, the community has had wins while on other issues the phrase work in progress would be a fair description," he says. Chris says he's proud to be representing the National Party, with its emphasis on supporting small businesses in particular. “Constituents in Coatesville and surrounding areas who employ themselves and others are helping to keep us all afloat right now. "A strong economic recovery is vital for New Zealand to be able to afford to build more schools and hospitals, along with roads and other key infrastructure. "In these challenging times, we must work together to bring back jobs and restore confidence," he says. Chris aspires to serve again for the next three years. "So I'm asking people for their vote for the National Party and myself as candidate, so I can do just that."
arja Lubeck is the Labour List MP for the Kaipara ki Mahurangi electorate. Marja (Mar-ya) Lubeck came to New Zealand from Holland in 1989, to "take a look" at a country that she had heard was clean, green and nuclear free. She fell in love with Aotearoa, the people and a good Kiwi bloke, who quickly snapped her up and became her husband. They settled in the Rodney area with their son, now 18. For many years, Marja worked at Air New Zealand becoming the President of the Flight Attendants’ Association. In 2009, at the time of the Global Financial Crisis, she began studying part time for a law degree to learn the laws of NZ workplaces. She did this to help many of the workers through that time of hardship. She graduated with her law degree in 2014. In 2017, Marja was asked to campaign for Labour and she entered parliament as a List MP. There, she has used her personal experiences on the Education and Workforce Select Committee and advocated for workplace relations and employment law. During the Covid-19 crisis, she has assisted workers and businesses through the issues they are facing. Locally, Marja has advocated successfully for this area. She has achieved funding for the restoration of the Mahurangi River in Warkworth, 4-lanes for the Matakana Link Road and Whangaparaoa’s Penlink crossing. These last two will reduce traffic congestion. Recently, Marja has been visiting the new areas of her electorate and learning about the problems of traffic congestion in Helensville and Kumeu and the need for a new High school. She will continue to support the ‘Save the Dome’ campaign and is keen to see more waste recycling, as she saw at the Wastebusters’ recycling plant at Snell’s Beach.

lthough well-known to many local people through her role on the Rodney Local Board, Beth has in fact stood for ACT in 2011, 2014, and 2017. "I’m putting my hand up again this election to help raise the Party Vote in Kaipara ki Mahurangi," says the Warkworth resident. "An increased Party Vote for ACT will result in more ACT MPs standing up for individual freedom, personal responsibility, less government intervention in our lives, and empowering the private sector to innovate and flourish – all values I joined the party for over 20 years ago." According to Beth, this election ACT's focus is on three key areas which affect all of New Zealand. "Our aim is to jump-start the economy by taking advantage of our island status to create jobs and growth; Control the mounting debt by stopping wasteful spending and balancing the books by 2023 – without raising taxes or cutting health and education; Invest in mental health and welfare reform by funding mental health and addiction through one agency, and implementing electronic welfare management for longterm beneficiaries to ensure real needs are met," she says. Zephyr Brown, The Green Party

ephyr is promoting the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand and its principles of ecological wisdom, social responsibility, appropriate decision-making, and non-violence. He was born and raised in Oratia, west Auckland. His mother was from Rotorua (Ngāti Whakaue) and father was born in Tonga. Zephyr and his wife live in the rural community of Ti Point. He works in Auckland City as the Chief Operating Officer of Image Centre Group, a 30-yearold publishing and print company with a turnover in excess of $20 million that employs 110 staff. He has extensive business management experience and a strong belief that a sustainable business will be a successful business. Zephyr says his priorities for Kaipara ki Mahurangi are to ensure a government with strong clean water, zero waste and future-focused transport policies in line with the Green Party's vision for Aotearoa outlined below. Water – Ensure that the Kaipara harbour has the strongest protection possible. Ensure Auckland Council has sufficient resources to properly implement Freshwater Farm Plans and the National Environmental Standard on Freshwater. Uphold the kaitiaki, proprietary, and customary rights of iwi and hapū over water. Support farmers to reduce run-off and the need for irrigation. This will include on-farm water storage and distribution, to improve resilience to floods and droughts. Waste – Develop a new Waste Strategy and review the Waste Minimisation Act and Litter Act to ensure we have the tools needed to put Aotearoa on a zerowaste pathway. Commit to zero food waste and zero e-waste in our landfills, and pass legislation creating clear waste management obligations for businesses and local authorities. He has a background in Horticulture with a Certificate in Horticulture from Northland Polytechnic. His long-time interest in history and politics led him to find his now inspiration, former Social Credit leader and MP Bruce Beetham and become involved in politics. Callan is standing for Social Credit because he says, "Its innovative, forward thinking economic and environmental policies will provide the best future for Kiwis today and generations to come." He strongly supports using the Reserve Bank to fund the much needed infrastructure upgrades and development in the electorate. pressure on our damaged outdated highways and improving road safety.” With six family members working in healthcare, Callan is passionate about improving the health system. He says Social Credit’s funding policies would enable much greater investment in healthcare and particularly mental health support, an issue he sees affecting large numbers of Kiwis, especially farmers and young people around his age. Callan says he is strongly opposed to the Chinese Government-owned Waste Management Ltd proposal to build a potentially toxic landfill in Dome Valley. "At a time when the Government is telling us we must reduce waste and emissions they have allowed the sale of 1000 hectares of Dome Valley farmland for what would be the country’s largest rubbish dump, in a flood prone area where the potential risk of toxic leachate spilling into the Kaipara Harbour is high. “This proposal will also see 300500 return trips by truck and trailer units per day on State Highway one between Auckland and Dome Valley. “Landfills are an antiquated idea that should remain in the 20th century. Preventing Abomasal Bloat in your Ag Day Pets
E
very year, the Agricultural Day (Ag Day) season brings joy to many children. Over time, the concept of Ag Day has evolved. Today, children are trying to rear lambs during the school term, and busy parents end up trying to juggle lamb feeding schedules with their own jobs. The small and very regular feeds that lambs would normally receive from their mothers are often replaced by two large milk feeds a day. The end result is often acute and life threatening abomasal bloat. This dangerous condition occurs when a lamb is overfed, and an excessive amount of gas is produced in part of the stomach called the abomasum. This gas then accumulates, causing distension which is painful. Lambs become lethargic, stop drinking, are uncomfortable and the abdomen will appear bloated. In severe cases, the stomach may rupture, or the distended stomach puts so much pressure on the lungs that it affects the lamb’s ability to breathe. The abomasum can only hold a small volume of milk at any one time. For example, lambs should only be fed 15% of their body weight in milk PER DAY. They should also be receiving a minimum of 6 feeds a day, with 8 feeds being preferable. Therefore, to calculate the volume of milk per feed you would carry out the following calculation: Total mls to feed per feed = Weight in grams x 0.15 = total amount in mls to feed per day. Then, divide that into the number of feeds. So the calculation for a 6kg lamb would be: 6000gm x 0.15 = 900mls. Divide that into 8 feeds = 112.5ml per feed. Unfortunately, the feeding recommendations printed on the back of the Anlamb packet do not take into account the limited size of the abomasum. As a result, many Ag Day parents following the feeding quantity guidelines on the back of the packet end up with sick lambs and goat kids requiring urgent veterinary attention. The Lifestyle Vet’s Tips and Tricks: ∞ Never overfeed your lamb or kid to cut corners. Lambs need at least 15% of their body weight in milk daily. Make sure you reweigh your lamb every second day. ∞ Lambs should be fed small amounts of cold milk since PARENT SEMINAR:

large volumes of warm milk can contribute to bloat. Lambs should be fed milk that is around 4 degrees in temperature. Normal tap water is around 6 degrees celcius. Always mix the milk with warm water as instructed on the packet, and then let the milk cool by placing the bottle in a cold water bath. ∞ Check the size of the hole in the teat. The milk should only just trickle out – if it flows out freely then this can lead to overfeeding and can contribute to bloat. ∞ Using the yoghurtised milk recipe below is the most effective strategy to help treat and prevent abomasal bloat. You will also find the recipe online at www.thelifestylevet.co.nz. ∞ Make sure your lamb or goat kid has been vaccinated (we recommend covexin 10 in 1 to further help prevent bloat). Laura Schwerdtfeger Yoghurtised Milk Recipe – The Only True Preventative 1. Add 1kg of Anlamb to 3L of warm water in a large bucket (a 9L or 10L brand new clean bucket is perfect). Mix well using a hand mixer to remove any lumps. 2. Add 200ml of plain unsweetened acidophilus yoghurt (you can get from the supermarket) and mix together with the AnLamb mixture. 3. Place a lid over the top of this bucket and place it in the hot water cupboard for 12-24 hours. After a 24-hour period, the milk should both look and smell like yoghurt. If you don’t have a hot water cupboard, you can sit the bucket in a sink of hot water covered with a towel. 4. Remove 200ml of this yoghurtised milk product and set it aside in the fridge in a sealed tupperware container. This 200ml will be your starter for the next batch that you will have to make at some stage. 5. Fill the bucket of yoghurtised milk up to the 8-litre mark with cold water, and mix thoroughly. 6. This yoghurtised milk is now ready to feed at normal quantities. Keep it in the fridge. It will last for 5 days in a cool place. It can therefore be made up twice a week. Make ¼ or a ½ batch of this recipe if you only have 1-2 lambs.
