How busy are our buses?

Congratulations

The 126 bus at Coatesville's only Albany-bound bus stop.

A

uckland Transport has released encouraging information about the patronage of the 126 bus service between Albany and Westgate. It seems locals along the route have responded enthusiastically to the hourly service which launched in May. AT's figures show that significantly more passengers are getting on board the bus than they initially expected. During its first three months, on average 7.2 passengers per hour have travelled on the 126 bus. Back in May, AT forecast that between two and four passengers per hour would use the service. This success should strengthen the argument from many Coatesville locals who want more bus stops added to the route between Riverhead and Coatesville. A petition organised by local resident Mary Logan attracted more than 100 signatures before

Mary presented it to the Rodney Local Board in July. Other people gave their feedback directly to AT. Mark Hannan, AT's Media Relations Manager says, "We have received a number of requests for new bus stops. We are now starting to look at which of these locations might be feasible." He says it should be noted that bus stops in rural and semi-rural environments can be particularly challenging. "We have to take into account the safety of the passengers, the bus and of other road users... We can be looking at roads with no footpath, often a single lane with no passing lanes and speed limits between 70 – 100 km/h. Therefore, we are often quite restricted in where we can place stops," he says. The Coatesville Chronicle will update readers about the location of any new bus stops in upcoming issues.

Photograper Marina De Witt (above) brought home a silver medal from the Royal Horticultural Society Botanical Art and Photography Show in London after submitting six of her photographs in the portfolio category. She says: "This is such a reminder that we need to chase our dreams. Think of what I could have missed out on if I was too scared to enter." Her advice to others pursuing creative endeavours is to say yes and worry about the details later.
