Fastest four to finish half marathon The annual Mizuno Coatesville Half Marathon hosted by Running Events attracted a huge crowd once again this year. Around 1600 people took part across all of the events held on Sunday, 19 March, and roughly 630 people ran the half marathon. First place went to Stephen Lett who completed the 21km course in 1:17:02 followed closely by Mark Paterson in second place with 1:17:44. Third place went to Chris Trent who crossed the line at 1:20:01 and Matthew Peach came in fourth with 1:21:44. The first woman home was Anwen Robinson with 1:31:01.

T

he Coatesville half marathon last month attracted plenty of competitors and supporters.

Several thousand people crammed the reserve making it a colourful spectacle to watch the runners and walkers cross the finish line. While taking the photos (see pages 6 and 7), I chatted to a few runners and met some amazing athletes. One was a woman in her 50s who had completed 264 marathons (that's not a typo). You have to admire these running types.

ANZAC Day is the next big event on the Coatesville community calendar. You can read more about it – and the changes to the CRRA membership – on page 10.

The next issue of the Coatesville Chronicle will be out a little later next month. Start looking for it around the middle of May.

I would like to thank Mary Logan for her dedication over the last seven years as custodian of the Coatesville Settlers Hall.

Mary played a key role on the committee of CHARAC that oversaw the management of the hall and reserve. This committee has seen the continued restoration of the hall and the added improvements that has made it today, one of the most popular regional halls in the Auckland area. Mary has been responsible for all hall bookings and dayto-day management of the hall and liaising directly with council.

Furthermore, she has facilitated multiple working bees on the reserve, working in with local community groups: scouts, pony club and the gardening club. The results of these working bees have undoubtedly enhanced the reserve by the planting of thousands of bulbs, trees and the newly developed Wild Wood area.

Today, the hall’s management is under the auspices of the newly formed Coatesville Hall Incorporated Society which Mary has been directly involved with instigating, by rallying support from the local community in its initial set up. This process has allowed a level of autonomy from the council on the management of the hall going forth.

Although Mary is no longer the custodian of the hall, I would like to take this opportunity to thank her whole heartedly for her

determination and tenacity to get things done, and for going the extra mile in making the hall and the reserve places that we can all enjoy so much more.

Threads and tales When author Kathy Servian needed a Victorian mourning dress for the cover of her latest novel, The Moral Compass and couldn't find one to borrow, she went ahead and made one. This dress and five others made by the author were recently displayed at Windmill Orchards.

Three burglaries took place during the week starting Monday, 5 March. That night Dairy Flat School suffered a break in and technology items were stolen. Then, just onehour later, Coatesville School was hit, also losing technology devices.

Coatesville School principal, Richard Johnson says, "We lost a number of iPads. It was a very quick forced entry and grab. Their haste was clear as they left a few cables strewn over the court as they raced off to their vehicle."

This was the second burglary at the school since Christmas.

"Over the summer holidays we lost three fire alarm speakers.

Apparently these have been quite an attraction for thieves over Auckland," says Richard. As a result of both burglaries, the school is heightening its security measures.

"We would also appreciate any suspicious activity around the school being reported," says Richard.

Later that same week, on Friday, 9 March, a ram raid was carried out at the GAS station at the top of Albany Hill.

Last month Auckland Transport announced that Dairy Flat Highway (DFH) would not be one of the roads to have its speed limit reviewed this year. Even though DFH has the vehicle movements, crash statistics and a number of significant risk factors, AT's reason for leaving it off the list was that locals would complain it would take them longer to get to work. This is not what I have been hearing.

Following AT's announcement there was a serious crash on DFH, at the Postman Rd intersection and a community petition was started requesting that AT prioritise the speed limit review of DFH in areas of greatest risk. In total, almost 900 residents and regular users of DFH signed this petition, either on paper or online. So late last month I presented the petition on behalf of the community to

AT’s Chief Transport Operations Officer. Although I was prepared for a battle, he agreed completely and undertook to get back to the community in early April with a priority for DFH. AT are also seeking an increase in funding for this project to accelerate the review process through the Regional Transport Long Term Plan which comes out for consultation on 24 April. As our rural roads are getting hammered by development, this is an opportunity to have your say about the future roading projects and problems in our area.

Local café earns accolade It's official, Black Cottage café's signature dish – Beef Wellington – is world class, earning one of the highest scores in the country in the 2018 Beef and Lamb Excellence Awards.

The annual competition invites restaurants of all types and sizes to enter their beef and lamb dishes to be judged by a mystery diner. Black Cottage put forward a smoked lamb shoulder entrée and its Beef Wellington main course, and earned an excellence award for both dishes.

Banu and Sulo Kaynarcali (shown above) say their Beef Wellington ticks all the traditional culinary boxes with its crisp puff pastry outer layer, mushroom duxelle paté and mediumrare fillet of beef inside. But in typical Black Cottage style there's a little magic in the sauce, flavour combinations and the presentation that takes it to another level.

“It's a favourite dish for many of our customers,” says Banu.

“Every dinner service, on average there will be one person at every table who orders it and some people even pre-order when they phone to reserve a table so they don’t miss out,” she says.

The excellence awards are judged without advanced warning, so there is no way of knowing who the judge was, or which night they dined. Sulo says he was pleasantly surprised to find out their version of the classic dish made their entry stand out.

Two of the obstacles that prevent people from considering home kill are knowing how to get started and what to expect. The Chronicle spoke to Andy Cummings, owner of Kumeu Meat Processors, to find the answers.

I have several lambs I'd like for the freezer, how do I get started?

All you need to do is give us a call because we offer a full service. We work with a number of registered slaughtermen including Terry and Bernie Patton, a husband and wife team who are very experienced. We can liaise with them and arrange the whole process if that suits you or you can do it yourself. They will come to your property, slaughter the animals and deliver them to our premises for processing. You need to book a few weeks in advance though, because they're pretty busy.

Will I have to get rid of the offal and hide?

No, we can get that taken that away for you.

Home Kill Guidelines If you're considering home kill for the first time, there are some important rules you need to know. You must own and care for an animal for 28 days or more before it is slaughtered.

The meat cannot be sold, traded or given away to people who don't live on the property and there are heavy fines for people who are found to have broken the rules.

he first term is well underway now with Scout numbers at 14 and our Cubs Pack now numbering 25 with a waiting list until we can get some more parents to become leaders.

Our Kea section (kids 6 to 8 years) has restarted after several years in recess and a huge thanks to Roslyn Sentch for becoming our Kea Leader.

Again, for the Keas to be able to operate safely and successfully Roslyn needs some more parents to become assistant leaders, so please don’t be shy.

Our first major event of the year was Founders Day at Browns Bay Beach on a beautiful sunny Sunday late in February.

This is always a spectacular occasion with hundreds of Keas, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers all participating.

Our Cubs had a great time making their model rafts with milk bottles, bamboo sticks and string, but unfortunately their efforts did not sway the judges in our favour.

Enough Scouts turned up for two raft crews again this year.

Despite two good practice nights in the river at Riverhead and at Browns Bay beach, their raft building seemed to progress so slowly we wondered if they would actually get their rafts built in the allocated time. A few last minute lashings got the job done in the nick of time to the relief of the concerned onlookers.

Both our crews got their teams paddling well and they rounded the buoys among the first group of rafts and set out for the sprint back to the beach. The paddle back involves avoiding rafts still heading out and often means

Warkworth were never headed despite all our efforts, but our two rafts finished third and fourth across the line. and we ultimately finished third and fourth overall.

This was our best ever finish with two rafts and our first podium finish for several years. It was a very proud group of Scouts led by Michol Hinton who went up to collect their third place certificates.

Since Founders day both Cubs and Scouts have had swimming sessions in the Coatesville Pool and joined together for a fantastic evening at the Paremoremo Creek waterhole.

We are presently preparing for our Summer Camp which will see our Scouts and Cubs camping together for the first time in five years and the Zone Mudslide Day is the first Saturday of the holidays so look for the report on these

events next month.

or over the last 12 months the property market in Coatesville has been changing. This is not about media speculation or the wider general statistics, this is about our lifestyle market. Word has it that traditionally 2% of buyers generally are looking for lifestyle property so from the beginning we have a smaller group wanting what we offer. The changing market has meant property is taking longer to sell.

Are the values dropping? In a number of cases no, however for some, yes. Nothing has changed, it is all about finding your emotional buyer.

Vendors are having to be more patient and your property needs to hook the buyer in before value is discussed. With sales taking longer this means that there are more properties on the market for buyers to choose from, so three areas are critical when selling your property.

1) Your advertising – it is vital that your photos and words set your property apart from others and honestly make the buyers feel that they MUST SEE yours. You can lose buyers who would potentially be your buyer if this is not done correctly.

2) The strategy – advertising needs to expose your property to all buyers over a longer period of time, and of course within a financial budget. Both open homes and private viewings are necessary and a twostage ‘method of sale’ could be considered. Using internet-based tools such as Herald.co.nz – Property Picks is an excellent avenue to target business people who travel, as well as expats wanting to return to New Zealand. Getting the mix right will ensure your property is exposed to the widest audience.

3) Your negotiator – with often larger gaps than previously experienced between the buyer and seller over price expectation, how your agent negotiates and closes these gaps is crucial part of achieving the result you need. Your agent needs to be able to uphold value through local sales knowledge and specifics about the property, must never make decisions on behalf of a seller or buyer nor give a personal opinion. Listening to both sides and building a relationship with both parties is imperative.
