fter a two-year break, the Coatesville Residents and Ratepayers Association once again invites the entire Coatesville community to commemorate ANZAC Day together.

The CRRA's traditional ANZAC Day service and morning tea will take place at the Coatesville Settlers Hall and locals of all ages are invited to come along and stand shoulder to shoulder with friends and neighbours. The

A

t this time of year Coatesville goes through a wardrobe change as the deciduous trees turn every shade of red and gold that autumn can think of. The trees on the reserve make a stunning backdrop for the CRRA service by the time ANZAC Day comes around. And this year 25 April is more special than usual because it will see the first full commemoration service held locally since 2018.

I took the cover photo at the reserve last year. The display of poppies with the New Zealand flag seemed minimal at the time, but it packed a punch visually when we were in the middle of a Covid lockdown.

It seems that compared to many countries in the world Kiwis are still lucky that we can mark an important occasion like ANZAC Day by gathering together in a crowd. So, let's do that.

If you can, come to the service and please put a gold coin or two in your pocket to support the RSA collection.

I'm happy to provide that level of privacy to anyone who wants to share a story as long as you include your identity, phone number and address in your email.

DoC to remove bridge I have just learned that a little pedestrian bridge over the Rangitopuni Stream (shown above), is to be destroyed by DoC, probably within the next week.

For decades there has been a walkway between Rangitopuni Road and others living at the top end of Mill Road, and Lewis Lane, then onto the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway.

I don't know how many people have used it to get their children onto school buses, but we will soon see an AT bus stop at Lewis Lane, so it would be ideal for children from Rangi and the top end of Mill Rd to walk through to catch the bus.

Access has been denied for a few months by a property developer, but rather than spend a small amount on improving the safety of the bridge, it seems DoC are hell-bent on destroying this local amenity!

APRIL NEWS Pony Club Robbery Overnight on 18 March Coatesville Pony Club suffered a break in. The club's vehicle was taken and a Police spokesperson says, Police received a burglary report where a vehicle was reported stolen from the pony club overnight on 18–19 March.

The vehicle was a silver Isuzu Bighorn. No other property was reported stolen but a fence was reported damaged.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 105, quoting file number 210319/6897 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

PFC to benefit from Garden Ramble

The Rotary Club is holding the Coatesville Garden Ramble again in November 2021. The event saw more than 800 tickets sold in 2019 with the funds raised going to charity. Rotary has decided to support the Pest Free Coatesville group this time and a large portion of the $50 ticket price will go directly to the PFC group if buyers specify the PFC when purchasing their tickets online. More information will be available closer to the time, but for now, please remember that you'll be able to help fundraise for this active community group when the time comes.

The truth about Anzac biscuits "Contrary to popular belief there were no Anzac biscuits at Gallipoli. The standard Army biscuit at this time was a rock-hard tooth breaker also called a ship’s biscuit.

Although it’s a myth that Anzac biscuits were sent and eaten by troops in Gallipoli, some evidence suggests a rolled oats-based biscuit was sent to troops on the Western Front, although this is not widespread.

The majority of rolled oats biscuits were in fact sold and consumed at fetes, galas, parades and other public events at home, to raise funds for the war effort. This connection to the troops serving overseas led to them being referred to as “soldier’s biscuits”.

Fundraising was coordinated by local Patriotic Funds, raising 6.5 million pounds for the New Zealand war effort.

The basic ingredients for a rolled oat biscuit were rolled oats, sugar, flour, butter with golden syrup, not eggs, used as a binding agent. This made them not only nutritious and full of energy but also long lasting.

After WWI, the most popular rolled oat biscuit had the name and association of Anzac applied to it and thus the legend of the Anzac biscuit began."

We meet on the fourth Sunday of the month in Sanders House, on Sanders Reserve, Paremoremo, where we sew from 10am – 4pm.

BYO lunch, and admire the fantastic view, and sometimes stretch our legs on the reserve.

We are experienced needle women who share expertise, advice materials, support and laughter.

For the cost of a cup of coffee a month, that’s $60 a year, we spend the residual after rent on bringing tutors for the group.

We have up to 15 members at a time, but with holidays and shiftwork we average 10 members at a meeting and with sewing machines this fills the room, but we also can have a few members hand sewing. The core skills are related to quilting, so patchwork, paper piecing, embroidery and embellishment can be seen at most meetings. There is often good cause charity work on the go too.

If you're an experienced needlewoman who needs stimulation, encouragement, ideas, and are happy and easy to get on with, you are the person we need, to replace members who have downsized and moved away. The next meeting is on 25 April.

W

hen Stephanie Schellingerhout found herself with a long recovery following surgery, she decided to make the most of her down time. Stephanie had always wanted to write a book and time off work made it possible to focus on her idea.

Back then, Stephanie, who's an avid animal lover, lived in Coatesville with her husband David and the couple both worked at Mincher Garden."David was the Spooner family's head gardener for almost 20 years, and I looked after the Mincher Garden duckery," explains Stephanie. Hardly surprising then that she chose to write a children's book about a community of animals living on a farm. The main characters are the crime-busting duo of Sheriff and Deputy dog who collaborate to solve all sorts of events on their home farm.

Stephanie says it suits readers aged between 8 and 12 years. She recently donated two copies to the Coatesville School library and there are copies for sale at several Auckland book stores including Paper Plus Helensville.

Stephanie will be at the upcoming Look Local mini market at Coatsville Settlers Hall, selling copies of the book. She also invites people to email her at the address below if they want to purchase one.

Small and home-based businesses will be showcased next month at the Look Local mini market. Event organiser and home business entrepreneur Debbie Skillcorn knows the challenges people face starting and running businesses from home. She says getting in front of customers helps to generate sales through word of mouth. "Marketing can be too expensive for many people to afford when they start out, so Look Local is a way of letting people know what you do and how to contact you without a significant capital outlay," says Debbie.

Ever had mess left behind?

Marching on with the CCGC

T

he CCGC calendar had to have an adjustment due to Covid issues, but we have had local events to fill the gaps. A visit to the Richardson’s garden in Coatesville was a wonderful experience.

The smooth greenlawns and magnificent old trees were beautiful.

The biggest persimmon we had ever seen, a huge tupelo, and a circle of enormous pin oaks showed how big trees will be if given time. Neatly clipped hedges and metal archways provided the entry to an extensive vegetable garden with over hanging vines. A Monet styled bridge over a waterlily studded pond (shown above) was most attractive and a range of buildings spread over the property served different purposes. A tennis court, cricket nets, a gym, and a cottage all added to the appeal of this delightful property.

The club organised a very well attended coffee chat at Silverdale, where the women from Orewa thoroughly enjoyed the catch-up and relished the idea of a further opportunity of this happening. A productive trip to Kawau for the Mansion House gardening crew meant we caught up with maintenance and hopefully at the end of April’s visit (Wed 21/3) we can start with pruning and breaking up of clumps of flowering plants as an autumn focus. We expect leaf raking to be a task in the future too, as this is a major source of mulch for the gardens in spring and summer.

Hopefully April is a “normal“ month for us and we can gather for a trip and other social occasions.

Playcentre's Open Week a Winner!

laycentre Open Week saw us open our doors to a dozen local families including two mums who attended Coatesville Playcentre as children and Alison who was a member of Coatesville Playcentre 30 years ago. We had the zoom slide set up, made fresh juice, painted the playground and made creations with scented playdough. It was lovely to meet other whānau and their tāmariki from our community and we have enjoyed having several of the families visit us again. We have several large projects planned for this year including upgrading our sandpit and we look forward to reporting on our progress a little later. Our children are learning about becoming kaitiakitanga — guardians of our environment. Volunteer Day For PFC Group

incher Garden welcomed the Pest Free Coatesville group volunteers for a family day recently to celebrate the group's achievements so far.

The garden was the perfect location for the conservation-minded crowd because pest animal eradication has played an ongoing role at Mincher.

Owner Bruce Spooner estimates that between 2000 and 3000 possums have been removed over the past 20 years or so, encouraging birdlife to thrive in the garden.

Although the afternoon was mostly about relaxing and enjoying a chat

over a drink and a hot dog, PFC leader Gary Langridge also recognised a number of volunteers for their efforts.

Regional coordinators, Geoff Spong, Julia Woodley, Sarah Craig and Stephanie Temm, together with accountant Nick Main and lawyer Nicolene du Toit, were all acknowledged for ther volunteer work. The Volunteer of the Year award ended in a tie between two couples; John and Gill Millward and Christine and Remco Koeleman.

Recycling Centre a Must

ucklanders produce a lot of waste. The average annual kerbside waste sent to landfill is 146kg per person. Once other types of waste (construction, demolition, soil etc) are added the number goes to just over a tonne per person per year, (that’s huge). Within households much of what goes to landfill is compostable, with over 50% being organic. As this breaks down without oxygen it produces methane which is a super bad greenhouse gas. A planned urban food waste collection will help in some areas but not in ours. We need to reduce this level of waste and re-use materials more.

We (local boards of Upper Harbour, Hibiscus and Bays and Kaipatiki) have been advocating for one of councils proposed new Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) to be located close to us in the central North Shore — somewhere.

Auckland Council are planning on adding a further nine community recycling centres to its network and we want one close to us. The closest ones we have are Whangaparaoa and Devonport, both of which are a long drive for many people on the North Shore.

CRCs are run by community groups and divert waste from landfill by composting organics, separating recycling properly, selling household items etc. You can often buy items at super cheap prices, alongside compost, tools, timber etc. They are a place of employment and education with the existing ones in Auckland having great records on reducing waste to landfill as waste is sorted more effectively and re-used.

Recently Alexis Poppelbaum (Hibiscus and Bays local board) and I presented to the Mayor and Councillors on behalf of our boards, showcasing why we needed some

of the new investment and we identified spaces for it.

One area that would be an obvious place for investigation is the closed landfill on Rosedale Road, but there are many other sites that could be considered. We just need somewhere that isn’t a 30-minuteplus drive as that’s just not feasible in this busy world.

They do so much; they have talks, run an eco shop, run courses on composing, sell bokashi systems and divert waste from landfill.

We have to keep striving to do better. We’ll continue keeping the pressure on so that residents across the North Shore have good access to CRCs so we can all do our bit to divert more waste from entering landfills.

On a separate matter, the Regional Land Transport Plan opened for submissions on 29 March and is open until 2 May. There are currently no plans for improvement at the bottleneck through Albany (The Avenue intersection, the tiny bridge in Albany and Gills Road). This is despite improvement being promised to residents for years and the growth we are seeing. The Upper Harbour Local Board will be working with Louise Johnston and Rodney Local Board on raising the profile of this glaring omission and generating as many submissions as we can.

f you're getting frustrated with being stuck in traffic at the bottom of Albany hill, just imagine what it is going to be like when thousands more houses are built in Milldale and it takes an hour to get down the hill.

The draft Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) is now out for public consultation. This is a 10-year investment programme for transport in Auckland and is refreshed every three years. Unfortunately, the ring fenced and funded project for widening of Dairy Flat Highway from Stevenson’s Cres to Gills Road, including the replacement of the Lucas Creek Bridge and signalisation of the Avenue/Dairy Flat Highway intersection, is no longer on the list of funded transport projects in the draft RLTP. I understand that Auckland’s Transport priorities change, but when you have houses being built at the scale of Milldale then this is key infrastructure that needs to be funded and delivered in the next 10 years.

This is only a draft plan and it is very important to provide AT with feedback as to why this project should be back on the table. On another note, last week I flew down to Wellington to present the petition for better internet connections for Coatesville and Dairy Flat. We had fantastic support from our MPs, Mark Mitchell, Chris Penk and Marja Lubeck who sits on the Selcet Committee.

For Coatesville residents outside of the current fibre zone, I stressed that residents are really struggling with our slow and unreliable internet service; and the copper wire cabinets can no longer keep up with the demand from residents and wireless is not an option for many due to the topography of the area and the capped data service. CRRA Update on UFB Build The message below was distributed by the CRRA in February to update people about when the UFB zone build work is expected to start:

April is mid-leaf-fall month. It’s time to start raking to keep gutters and drains free.

87 percent of New Zealanders having access to fibre, one suggestion from the Select Committee was to undertake an inquiry as to why areas have been excluded from the fibre roll out. This would be a good result but an even better one is if they can allocate some funds from the $60 million infrastructure fund for rural connectivity and capacity to include our area, as outside of the Coatesville fibre zone we have definitely fallen through the cracks.

People need to be wary when disposing of used 6 volt and 9 volt batteries as the exposed contacts have been known to short with a metal object causing a spark and subsequent fire. Search ‘ 9 volt battery fire hazard’ to read/view how this can happen.

"Chorus have advised us that they are on track to start the build of UFB Fibre in Coatesville in July. The expectation is the build complete will be much sooner than the contractual milestone (which is 12 months after start). At this early stage Chorus will not put a date on that.

Suffice to say Coatesville will have broadband well before the end of the UFB2 programme and before some towns that were promised it back in 2017. That means we are looking at having UFB in Coatesville before July 2022.

The funds raised for this project which were generously donated by Coatesville residents remain in a trust account with Davenports. Payment will be made to Chorus just prior to their commencement of work.

We will continue to let you know about any further progress updates as we receive them from Chorus."

Term One Wrap Up from Coatesville School

T

he first term at Coatesville School is drawing to a close! The weeks have quickly raced by but there has been plenty to keep everyone busy and excited.Here's a small sample of the term that was.

Lockdown interruption

We had an excellent start to the year.

A very positive four days before we were unfortunately impacted by the first short lockdown.

Our 'distance learning' programmes were once again employed to allow connections between teachers and their classes to be maintained and for learning to continue. But it was frustrating for everyone, especially at the start of the year when building relationships and setting of expectations are the priorities. Having another subsequent lockdown slowed momentum once again, but after last year we are now prepared for sudden disruptions. We are hopeful no more are forthcoming though!

Swimming Sports

Our school swimming sports was finally and successfully completed — after an initial Level 3 postponement.

It was a gloriously warm, sunny day for racing. Heats, finals, medleys and whanau relays!

The event was held under Level 2 conditions which precluded spectators from attending. Although half-way through the event the move was suddenly made to Level 1! A rush of eager spectators did not materialise however!

The inter-school swimming event was held soon after, with our group of local schools enjoying our wonderful facilities and a lot of excellent racing.

Coatesville School performed extremely well coming second-equal overall.

The swimming season is now coming to an end. This season has seen significant expenditure on the pool, the equipment and the facilities.

There will be a summary of the season and a feedback opportunity for users over the coming weeks.

School Disco

Dressing up in colourful gear, listening to upbeat music, buying all manner of glow-in-the dark toys and accessories, having your face painted and enjoying tasty food! What is not to love about the annual school disco!

The Coatesville Hall was superbly decorated and a large majority of the school turned out to enjoy themselves.

FOTS (Friends of the School) did a brilliant job of organising the fun.

Coatesville Residents and Ratepayers' Donation

Last year we were thrilled to be the recipient of a $7855 donation from the Coatesville Residents and Ratepayers Association. We allocated the money to subsidise two very important projects which we hope benefit the school and the community. Firstly, we completed a new 'driveway' path from the school office to the road, which completes a nice loop for anyone walking around the school.

Secondly, we replaced one of our large swimming pool filters and the filtration material inside, which will benefit all swimmers from the school and community.

Thank you once again for a wonderful donation. We have hugely appreciated the generosity of all who gave money and have put it to very good use.

School Projects completed

As reported earlier in the year through

the Coatesville Chronicle, we have completed significant upgrades of facilities around the school. Our whole main entrance pathway was completely relaid; the aforementioned 'driveway' path was completed; our school driveway crossing platform to the forest playground was constructed; and a number of new car parks were created.

These changes were all desperately needed, enhancing access for the school community and visitors and, importantly, ensuring greater levels of safety for all those onsite.

We are very happy with the outcomes of the projects and are continuing upgrading the school with installation of more artificial turf planned for the upcoming school holidays and remodelling of some of our administration block later in the year.

We are looking forward to a very productive and successful Term 2 already. ∞

Changes for 2021 Investors

Bright Line Test For any property other than the one you live in as your family home there is what is called a Bright Line test. If you buy a secondary home i.e. rental/investment and sell within five years, you are liable for tax implications. It was recently announced to increase from 5 to 10 years and comes into effect for property acquired on or after 27 March 2021. New builds will remain at five years and main homes and inherited property remain exempt. The tax is paid at your income tax rate, potentially up to 39 per cent on some or all of the profit. The main home exemption still exists, but they will be changing the main home exemption rules if a property has been both your main home and a rental property. This has already passed via a bill.

Removal of Interest Deductibility Property investors will no longer be able to offset their interest expenses against their rental income when calculating their tax. New builds will remain exempt. The legislation will apply from 1 October.

Interest on loans for properties acquired before March 27 can still be claimed as an expense. However, the amount someone can claim will be reduced over the next four income years until it is completely phased out by 1 April, 2025.
