CAID stands out!

We are College of Architecture and Interior Design, SVIT, Vasad who has established it’s distinguished identity since 2000 in the field of Bachelor in Architecture. Recently launched its new branches of Interior Design, and Diploma in Architectural Assistantship (D-Voc). The balanced amalgamation of three arenas: Architecture, Art and Design creates distinctive environment. We here, nurture students to explore beyond the boundaries of the studio while engaging them into hand’s on workshops, site visits, RSP’s and co-curricular activities.

I believe that the newsletter will share the complete profile of the academic and co-curricular activities, achievements, and progress made during the stipulated period. We at SVIT are committed to create an environment for nurturing innovation, creativity, and excellence in our students. Our educational programs lay emphasis on all-round personality development of our students can become more socially alive to lead a meaningful life.

Principal’s Message Prof. Sailesh Nair

CAID, Vasad has taken a step to bring the monthly newsletter covering various accomplishment and activities under taken by the institute. Numerous participation by the students and faculties in various directions is expressed through this strong platform.

The Students who are very much enthusiastic for extra curriculum activities and studios work is expressed with various active participation by faculties and Alumni makes this knowledge collector stage. We will be initiating this platform every month with focus on campus activities, students corner, and extra corridors of information to think, create, and research in architectural discourse. The Journey of this college, took Interior design course integrated and it became the part of Curriculum. We are again happily introducing a new course D-Voc as our part of academics.

The idea of ideal residence design with everyday life practices response to an intangible idea of living functional comfort. Residence with an infinitesimal opportunity for creating memories and experiences of space to enhance emotional, mental, and physical enhancement.

The process about a house, with all the daily amenities like gym, workplace, quarantine space, skylight, jali fenestrations, terrace garden, water bodies had been created with the massing of 3d cubes in closed envelops compositions with added voids. The experimentation with light drama is interpreted with jalis placements.

Beauty lies in the details...

With collective efforts of the CAID team for first year students, we had explored and experimented with sketching in Art and Architecture. The enthusiastic art faculties were the core members of this workshop. The main focus was on the sketching initiatives in a different discourse of this innovative field.

The Workshop took shape for 10 days exploring ideas with a different mode of expression by sketches. The sketch journey started from scribbling to mixed medium transformation.

Initial exercises started with Scribbling, Visual Measurements, line drawing, shading, pen and ink drawings, Charcoal drawing, paintings, and further Exploration with Various Mediums like Pencils, Charcoal sticks, Oil and dry pastels, Ink and Gel pen, Watercolors, and Posters colors.

World Environmental Day It’s all About Nature The earth is the living nature of the existing cosmos. Humankind’s responsibility here to live with this live earth without damaging its meanings. The first sensitivity we need to develop is everything around us constitutes our environment with living and non-living things, which makes it the life surrounded by us.

Humankind survival is purely hosted by the “Planet Earth”, perhaps this is only the survival place for life.

More than 7 billion people explore and experience nature and biodiversity for their livelihood and well-being. All species in the living environment are equally relevant in the overall ecosystem of the Earth. Removing it will only initiate a reverse effect. Precisely, what we are suffering now with the Covid-19 pandemic stands before us like a monster.

Looking at the present scenario, human survival is facing unexpected trouble in the environment.

The initiative could start with organizations of the earth altogether on this day with small steps of planting trees or cleaning up some local lands, which can leave a huge impact on the safe environment.

Further, awareness could be raised on introducing by-laws, policies, the use of plastics, and trees. Plantations help to curb pollution and help to shape better Earth conditions.

The exercise devised to understand the structural loadsystem. All the possibilities of performing structural loads are observed with Fixed-beam and overhanging structures that are more stable than simply supported.

The stability and strength of a structure depends on load type, size, span, and height, etc. In conclusion, built architecture have integration of structure and space designs.

World Yoga Day SVIT Vasad in collaboration with the Isha Foundation celebrated international yoga day. Through online sessions, Sadguru (Isha Foundation) addressed how to build immunity and overcome immunity issues in the covid era. The staff of 300 members performed yoga on the campus maintaining social distance under covid guidelines. The session included various yoga techniques. Students also joined the online live broadcasted session.

Project of the Month Contextual Studio Apurva Meharunkar | 2nd year | 3rd semester

The studio focuses on the analysis of context as a determinant of architectural character.

Idea inculcates study of built form with special reference to climate, material, social & cultural context, physical environment, etc. The four study areas were the Fort area of Jaisalmer, Bohrawad of Sidhhpur, Fontainhas Goa, and the French colony of Pondicherry. Each study area has 4 sites & 4 programs that students have identified considering the need for time. The exercises focused primarily on buildings and street patterns, and how socio-cultural developments reflected on the architecture of the place. The guidance emphasized sectional drawings more rather than following the conventional method of designing which starts with architectural plan drawings. The students have tried to manage design with materials responding to climate and contexts. The architectural design was presented through hand drawings and computer graphics.

About the design process: The studio intended to develop the artist hub keeping contextual study as a prime focus. The site is located on the campus of the handicraft department in Fontainhas, Goa. Mala lake and Ourem creak are the immediate physical feature on either side of the site.

The prime philosophy for designing the hub revolved around the streets of Fontainhas. The street acts as the main spine connecting the primary spaces such as galleries, auditorium, workshops, and canteen. The inverted roofed galleries are placed in the entrance having colorful walls resembling the culture of the city.

The workshop was followed by the auditorium designed having the balconies overlooking the Ourem creak and having Moroccan tiles which is a key feature in the context of Goa.

A Point in a Space Nandini Patel | 1st Year | 2nd semester

Forms were explored through various models where point indicating a position in space gets further converted into line with different properties of line like, length and direction.

A line extends to become a plane with additional properties of length, width, shape, surface, orientation and position. Plane extends to become a volume with additional properties of depth, form, space and surface. The volume encompasses all elements together to create a space that translates imagination and ideas.

The Healing Milieu_ Daman: The City of Twin Fort Urban Insert Athira Nair | 5th Year | 9th semester

The vision is to foster the vibrant, prosperous, and qualitative heritage place of Moti Daman which houses the beautiful Hieronymus Fort administrative settlement along with the Portuguese colony and other heritage settlements and the beaches.

Moti Daman fort is identified to have a potential for urban intervention as it carried both historical and emotional significance.

For the public realm intervention, the main aim was to develop a tourist circuit to enhance and improve tourism with a Heritage walk.

The idea of adaptive reuse of the fort unused space and structures to cater to the needs of the present. Protecting the historic structure and reinvigorating the fort.

The objective of the proposal is to provide a recreational and aesthetic experience to the tourist and to facilitate some basic requirements for the natives.

One fort bastion is selected as a site that will act as a prototype for the development.

The design includes a tourist interpretation center with exhibition galleries, workshop area, information desk, a public library in the memory of the poet Bocage.

The CoVai-Urban Design competition

Nikita Pal | Batch 2015 The competition invited entries to revive Koundampalyam ward, Coimbatore, India.

The competition was conducted by CCMC (Coimbatore city municipal corporation), Coimbatore Smart City, GIZ India, urbanista, and Taru Leading Edge. Entries were evaluated by renowned professionals in the field.

We congratulate our faculty, Urban designer Nikita Pal and other fellow urban designers Dhvani Trivedi, Shashank Verma, Akanksha Balpande, Anurag Rathi for getting short-listed.

The concept of Urban Recharge defines the revival of ecology, convivial public open spaces with a sustainable approach, and inclusive design to recharge the natural assets and people of the city. Urban recharge aims to reinvigorate the decaying assets of the city with nature-based and sustainable measures while building custodianship and economy at the neighbourhood and city level. It addresses the neighbourhood and city with wise investment to - Revive ecology, regenerate the economy and Recreate Community spaces and linkages.

The proposal includes a simple and implementable solution to Restore Ecology and develop a sustainable neighbourhood, through various landscape strategies, material explorations, like canal edge restoration and naturalization to transform canal into public space by planting native species, bioswales, rain garden and sunken plaza, pervious pavements, solar panels at residential and commercial buildings. The public spaces and infrastructure proposed will contribute and support to Regenerate Economy of the neighbourhood.

The proposal includes formalizing the informal, encouraging local material and craftsmanship by providing workshops with a display area to uplift existing art and craft.

Empowering women’s role in society by proposing skill training centres. Spaces for advertisement boards that will be a revenue generation source.

The strategy to Recreate community spaces and Linkages addresses the demand for robust infrastructure in neighbourhood like underground drainage pipelines for better health conditions and underground electricity wires to enhance the visual appearance. The non-Motorized transport (NMT) corridor encourages the movement of pedestrians, cycles, and e-rickshaw.

Cycle and e-rickshaw loop are proposed with cycle hire stands and e-rickshaw stands, which will ease the commute and connects all major landmarks. The recharge corridor is proposed as a green link with sitting and interactive spaces.

Recharge pockets act as a multi-purpose space for community social gatherings. Safe and shaded walkways with disabling friendly and inclusive design interventions, parklets along the street, and pop-up pavilion are proposed for placemaking. Park comprises activities for neighbourhoods such as open gyms, jogging tracks, cycle tracks, and play areas.

Importance of Material science knowledge in the Architectural design process Prof. Pragnesh Shah | CAID

In the ancient agricultural harvesting practice known as winnowing, the wind was harnessed to blow away the chaff, thus leaving the grain behind for use. This is how we distinguish the valuable from the valueless in a workday filled with multitasking?

By doing this we can get to the core of that which needs to be done. We will sometimes work in the order of priority, or instead to tackle those pesky items which cause us to procrastinate on any given day. How do we reach the depth of focus needed to make such distinctions in our workplace, careers, or business?

The architectural building design has various layers, systematically laid, and symmetrical working to form the sensitive designs. The material importance in the initial phase of the design process helps to strengthen architectural design vocabulary with function and space. The selection of sustainable materials in design development is an important phase during the design process. The experience, exposure, and understanding of material help in building the design journey.

The answer lies in the discipline of cultivating a stillness within ourselves that allows for more clarity when making decisions in the approach to our day. The more we practice that discipline which might come in the form of prayer, meditation, or exercise - the easier it becomes to separate the wheat from the chaff. But then there’s the dilemma of what is left behind.

As we try to integrate or synergize the activities of working and living with purpose, we eventually get to those issues of less importance.

In Architectural practice, inevitably we must use our time wisely when determining how much of our day goes to phone calls, returning e-mails, or meeting with clients or prospective business contacts. We will also tend to separate the wheat from the chaff in that way as well, giving more importance – or not- to certain people and work which come our way.

The integrated knowledge of environmental science, construction, a decision for technology and regional resources helps to shape sustainable appropriate materials. The building material is an integral part of the architecture, symbolic thoughts, philosophical values collectively give an experience of a space. The form of material structure also can be symbolized with structural knowledge, identity & symbolism, historic value, and visual importance. The architectural language of aesthetics developed by a materialistic approach to the disciplined form. In this modern era, it has completely revolutionized with different ideas implementation in architectural modern technology.

The sensitive use of materials for treating the exterior quality and design attributes may produce a sensitive architecture market.

We are excited to let you know about our new campus of CAID, SVIT, Vasad is about to complete this year. We are looking forward to officially moving into our new academic building. The campus has lots of new opportunities to offer.

The new building is dense with departments embarking on a lot more multi-use space management.

All Faculties and students are geared up to start afresh in the new building, which is a new architectural journey in itself. The Institution is impervious to disaster and that the incessant and inexorable growth of this organization is attributed to all the people associated with it.

This remarkable milestone has not only felicitated the gigantic leap in the development of the inception of the CAID but also make it a temple of learning for ages to come.
