Get well in 2024

W

ellness isn’t a word.

How do I know? Because it’s not in my Webster’s II New Riverside University Dictionary, which was printed just yesterday, in 1976, and is the repository of all my words. Page 1,310 takes us right from “well-meant” to “well-nigh.” Which means, I guess, we began thinking of our wellness sometime after the Bicentennial but before the Pandemic, when our wellness took a bit of a break.

Now, though, it’s back. If ever there was a time to think about our well-being (which is on page 1,310) it is now, in this fraught presidential election year, when we aren’t quite sure whether it’s safe to gather and we are under increasing stress over prospects for World War III and Civil War at the same time. So, this issue of Coastside magazine is dedicated to your wellness, regardless of what my dictionary says. And we’re taking an expansive view of what it means to be well, including your financial well-being in the equation.

Our Swiss Army knife of a photographer, Anna HochKenney, opens another of her tools to write about the Pacifica Running Club. Many of us have “more exercise” on that New Year’s Resolution bingo card and there is a welcoming group of neighbors ready to encourage you as you put one foot in front of the other.

Writer Peter Tokofsky takes us into some impressive garage gyms on the Coastside. He talks to neighbors about why they opt to sweat at home rather in a crowded public gym.

And August Howell, who recently has been named interim editor for our parent company, talks to some local folks about their own brand of tea that promotes wellness right here on the coast.

All kidding aside, we hope you are able to dedicate more time this year to your own health and well-being. It’s hard to do much else without it. My advice? Breathe. Drink water. Go for a walk. And be kind to strangers — it will bring down your blood pressure.

hey tell young journalists, when writing about a dog, get the mutt’s name. Why? Because a collie may be adorable, but a collie named “Maggie” is relatable. And we all like to read about creatures with whom we relate.

I was reminded of that truism when editing the stories you will find in this month’s edition of Coastside. It’s true we always include a fine example of coastal canines as a standing department. But this month, without even trying, it seems like animals poked their cold noses into just about every story. That may be because this magazine is dedicated to our environment. You’ve heard the expression “canary in a coal mine,” which harkens back to dark days when miners would carry the birds deep underground, knowing that if the birds were starved of oxygen and died, it was past time to get the heck out of there. Well, the animals in our midst are all playing that role today as climate change, toxic chemicals, plastics that never degrade and other environmental hazards crowd many species toward extinction.

Whether it be training for a 10K or committing to “Meatless Mondays,” ringing PAUL SPAETH in the New Year often inspires goals and a focus on a healthy future for the coming year.

This year, maybe you want to consider financial health too.

Coastside magazine’s Emma Spaeth found herself thinking of ways a 20-something like herself might get her finances in shape, and who better to ask than good ol’ dad?

Longtime Coastsider Paul Spaeth has a master’s in business administration from the University of Chicago with a focus on finance, and when he wasn’t volunteering with youth organizations or on the sidelines coaching local sports, he pursued a career in consulting and finance with Accenture and Visa.

Recently retired, and after helping raise four kids to adulthood (who are somewhat financially literate,) Paul Spaeth offered some advice to young people just getting started on their financial journey.

5 QUESTIONS

As a young adult, what should I concentrate on with respect to finances and future plans? Most young people in their early to mid-20s are starting to become more financially independent from their parents, which may include moving away from home. Their first financial priority should be, of course, to have enough money on a month-to-month basis to fund the basic expenses necessary to live independently. Housing, utilities, food, phone plan, transportation (including car insurance), health care (including medical insurance) and student debt. Beyond this, they should try to save enough to cover at least three to six months’ expenses in the event of an emergency.

This is also one of the best times to begin to develop a good credit profile, which means getting access to credit and managing it responsibly, like obtaining a credit card and paying off the entire balance each month. This does not mean going into personal debt which is too often a costly mistake.

Next, young people should, if possible, really prioritize putting away some savings for retirement and large future investments such as the down payment on a house. I know this may sound harsh, but my advice is only after this should they consider more discretionary spending such as coffee, eating out, concerts, etc.

When should I start saving for retirement? It is never too early! The earlier you begin the more you will benefit later on in life as your savings will have had more time to grow. But retirement savings must come after making sure that you first cover your living expenses and eliminate any personal debt, such as credit card balances. Take full advantage of employer retirement savings plans, since they allow you to make investments that can grow tax-deferred for many years. And it’s OK to take some risk by investing heavily in stocks when you are young, since over time, though the values may jump up and down, they present one of the highest rates of return over the long term. But avoid picking individual stocks; you will not beat the market. Instead invest in U.S. or global stock index mutual funds or Exchange Traded Funds which help to diversify your risk.

How do you balance building credit and not putting yourself into credit card debt? You do it by demonstrating that you can manage credit responsibly. The easiest way is to get a credit card with a small credit line, use it for making purchases and pay off the balance each month.

Why do you need to establish good credit? How do you do that?

Credit is useful for funding large purchases for which you do not have current funds. Usually these are more expensive items — houses, cars — that you wish to pay for over time with a loan from a lender, who first determines whether or not you are at risk of not repaying the debt. For this they use a credit score that is based on your past credit behavior. The higher the credit score, the more likely you are to repay the debt.

The people behind HMB Optometry Family Eye Care celebrated their 10th anniversary with a party at Jettywave in Princeton in Decmeber. Dr. Neda Moshasha moved to town in 2012 with her family and found there were limited eye care services.

She decided to open her own practice to support the community.

She has since served over 4,900 patients at her private practice. She also works at the Coastside Clinic weekly to service the broader community. P

eter Lundgard loves his new tea so much that he sipped it from a hot thermos in one of the more intimidating and stressful situations one can conjure: while operating a Jet Ski on a December day during one of the biggest Mavericks swells in several years.

Peter and his brother Thomas Lundgard, both Half Moon Bay High School alumni born and raised on the coast, recently launched their new caffeinated tea brand called Midday Superfoods. Their first batch, the Superfood Oolong Tea, came from the Lundgard family’s hobbies and interest in business. As avid surfers used to waking up early and eating healthily, the two sought a drink that tasted good, provided an energy boost and had a range of health benefits without the jitters and mid-day caffeine crash from a second cup of coffee.

“A lot of people like the energy of coffee, but there are negative side effects,” Peter Lundgard said. “So, we were thinking how do we create a middle-of-the-day tea?”

The Half Moon Bay brothers are in their mid-20s and have experience starting businesses from scratch.

The brothers' tea is designed to give a midday boost of energy.

Since 2018 they’ve run Tommy Tsunami Surf School at Surfer’s Beach in the summer, and Thomas Lundgard founded an outdoor apparel company called VNTR. As any young entrepreneur will tell you, building a brand requires a ton of work and it’s always more than expected.

Much of the work happened before the first batch of tea was available to sip. The brothers tested the market before there ever was a product in hand. Once they knew people were on board, they used their email base to get pre-orders, which in turn helped them fund the purchase order of 500 units. And there was the small matter of getting the tea certified by the Food and Drug Administration. Even the packaging required some thought. They paid an artist to design the packaging, which hints at a golden afternoon on the coast.

“There are a lot of supplement brands out there,” Thomas Lundgard said. “We were asking ourselves, how do we fit our product into this world? What problem do we solve?

Who is our base, is it a 20-year-old surfer? Is it someone in middle America? There are so many types of people, so we have to get specific to find a launch pad to start the business and take the risk.”

Most of the world’s tea supply comes from China, India, Kenya and Sri Lanka. The

Lungards hope to tap into their own country’s wildly popular tea market. According to the Tea Association of the USA, a group that promotes and does public relations for tea businesses, “Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world next to water and can be found in almost 80 percent of all U.S. households. On any given day, over 159 million Americans are drinking tea.” The organization also reported that in 2021, “Americans consumed nearly 85 billion tea servings, close to 3.9 billion gallons. About 84 percent of all tea consumed was black tea, 15 percent was green tea, and the small remaining amount was oolong, white and dark tea.”

“A lot of companies sneak in sugar or artificial sweeteners,” Peter Lundgard said. “Our dad is a scientist and we grew up eating healthy.

We're trying to be really dialed in.”

It took nearly a year, but their Superfood Oolong Tea is available for purchase online at middaysuperfoods.com/pages/buymidday.

they and others say are associated with various health benefits such as turmeric (an anti-inflammatory), ginger (for digestion), ginseng (immune support), maca (energy) and ashwagandha (an adaptogen associated with focus and resilience to stress). It has 15 milligrams of caffeine, much lower than the 100 milligrams in an average cup of coffee. The lemon flavor comes from monk fruit sweetener, which has less than 1 gram of sugar. The Lundgards wanted to steer clear of artificial sweeteners like sucralose or cane sugar.

“We’re super into health and wellness, and we want to get people from wherever they are on their spectrum of health, say they need energy and eat a candy bar, a soda or energy drink, if we can get them to a healthier alternative, that’s a huge win,” Thomas Lundgard said.

Peter Lundgard prefers his tea hot on a cold day, while his brother is a fan of putting it on ice. They have plans for morning and evening tea. But for now, they’re in the middle of their day. COASTSIDE

he day I met the Pacifica Runners, I sat in my kitchen staring at my running shoes for a solid five minutes before finally putting them on and forcing myself out the door.

Meeting up with a group of strangers to go for a run might not sound enticing to the average person, but I was in need of accountability, community and routine in a new home place. Oh, and the group was about to wrap up its summer pub run series. If there is ever a right time to join an exercise group, it’s when there’s free beer involved.

As a hardy group assembled, a smiling and energetic woman noticed me awkwardly standing on the side and immediately made her way over, welcoming me and introducing herself as Kayla Blom, the president of the running club. Before I had time to get nervous about not fitting in, Blom explained that this was going to be a “really fun run.” Not only were there runners of all speeds and paces, but there were joggers, dog-walkers and even some parents with kids. You could turn around whenever you wanted, and as soon as you got back to the brewery you could get your free beer!

Next thing I knew, the group took off and I was running at a comfortable pace alongside Blom and a few other runners who happily adjusted their speed in order to chat. For many members, the run seemed to be as much a community social event as it was a workout. As I watched the group space out and form into little clusters of people with similar paces, I realized that there was indeed a place for everyone in this club, regardless of speed.

The running club’s inclusive, welcoming atmosphere is no accident; in recent years, leaders in the club have adopted practices, both as a group and as individuals, to make sure newcomers of all levels have a place in the club.

Pacifica Runners is an inclusive group that assures no one is left behind.

One important move, Blom says, is making sure club membership remains affordable so that all interested runners can join, regardless of financial status. Membership costs just $20 a year (which includes weekly training workouts, weekly group runs, special events, and, most importantly, a free beer at every pub run.) No Coastside fitness membership even comes close in terms of affordability.

Mor Hirsh, a member who leads weekly speed training workouts at the Skyline College track, contributes by making pace-inclusive workouts that are open to any members interested in improving their speeds. He’s not just interested in the ultra competitive members. He does this by structuring the group training by time, not by distance.

“It doesn’t matter whether you are a slow

runner or a fast runner — everyone starts and finishes together. We’re not just amazed by the fast runners here, we’re amazed by everyone who comes and pushes themselves,” Hirsh says. The approach seems to be effective. He’s watched his weekly training sessions increase from four people to more than 20, ranging from ultramarathon runners to newcomers training for their first 5K. The group also takes inclusiveness into consideration when planning events. “We have races where you challenge yourself to be the best and we give out prizes for the top finishers, but we've also started some events that are more geared towards just showing up and achieving your own goals,” said Leslie Stanton, the director of race promotions. The “Blind Pace Test” run is a great example. Each

runner guesses their pace before starting a two-mile run, and is not allowed to check their pace on any devices during the run. When they finish, their pace is calculated. Whoever best predicted their pace is the winner of the event.

Another popular event is the annual Holiday Pickle Hunt: the first runners to locate pickle ornaments hidden along a route in San Pedro Valley Park get prizes.

The weekly newsletters reiterate the message of inclusion. “Our trail runs are ‘no drop,’ meaning that there is no person left behind on the trail and we will do our best to run together as much as possible,” reads a trail run announcement. Announcements for Saturday morning runs remind members that strollers and furry friends are always welcome, and the speed training announcements encourage

members to show up and jog or walk even if they aren’t currently focusing on improving speed.

Perhaps the most effective approach, however, are the personal touches. When I showed up to my first speed training workout a few weeks later, I was shocked to find that Blom remembered me. This is something Blom has started practicing at the running club in order to make newcomers in particular feel welcome.

“I actually take pride in trying to remember people’s names. I want you to feel included.

If you are taking the time to show up to a running club, and you have a personal goal, I want you to feel like that goal is possible,” Blom says. Between Blom and club secretary Anni Kelley-Day (fondly referred to as the club’s “pro run-walker”), every newcomer is bound to leave feeling like they have someone with whom to run.

For member Scott Kraus, the outcome is an approachable-yet-driven community that helped him go far beyond his original personal goal of running a 5K. He has now

completed a few 10Ks and a half marathon, and is considering training for his first marathon. Member Caitlin O’Callaghan says the club has revived her passion for running that she had lost after moving away from her previous running partner. For Blom, it’s a comfortable and encouraging level of accountability to people who have come to be near and dear to her heart.

Everyone I spoke to, called it a supportive community network in a place conducive to running. COASTSIDE

ove over Jobs and Wozniak, Page and Brin, Cobain and Grohl. A growing number of Coastsiders are relocating their cars, ditching motherboards and pushing aside guitar amps to transform their garages into home gyms, places where the next invention is a healthier body.

The garage gym enthusiasts we met prefer to talk about growing their collection of training equipment and creating a workout space than about the latest start-up that might be incubating in a Silicon Valley carport. The diverse garage gyms on the coast reflect the personalities and training goals of their owners, all of whom said they survived the COVID-19 shutdown in 202021 by having in-home workout spaces.

“I love being at home, I love being around my kids and we have a really special neighborhood,” she said, capturing her continuing delight over her decision to work, and workout, from home.

A Peloton, another stationary bike, rowing machine and a collection of free weights and medicine balls all have their niche in Quigley-Borg’s two-car gym.

“And here’s the queen,” she said, pointing to a Freemotion dual cable cross lite machine that, as she quickly demonstrated, can be used for more than a dozen weight-lifting exercises.

“You’d be surprised by what you can do with an 8-by-10 space,” said Quigley-Borg, who also consults for people who want to put together

their own gym. “Over time, I figured out how to make everything accessible. I have a ton of hooks everywhere.”

The trainer has about $25,000 invested in her immaculate, professional space, but thinks it’s possible to set up a starter gym for as little as $2,000.

“The specifics depend on the individual, but I like to start with a kettlebell, a mounted wide pull-down bar and fitness bands.”

Quigley-Borg keeps a small leaf blower in the corner to get dust and pollen out when the wind kicks up. An assortment of cleaning products stand ready to wipe down the equipment between workouts.

Quigley-Borg earned certification in palliative training so she can meet the needs of a clientele that ranges in age from 13 to 87. “Having a

place in the neighborhood where they could get out and exercise proved particularly important for elderly clients during the pandemic,” she said.

“On Fridays, my youngest client is 71.”

Quigley-Borg charges by the minute because she understands that people like her 87-year-old neighbor don’t need an hour of work. “Any little thing makes a significant difference, even just being able to walk here.”

A few miles to the south, Craig and Nikki West train in their garage that serves as headquarters for HMB Muscle. Their arrangement reflects the couple’s commitment to competitive bodybuilding. A row of free weights runs the length of the space, many of them on the very heavy end. With the treadmill and rowing machine out of sight inside the house, their garage is clearly for serious weightlifting.

The space was born after Craig West got laid-off from a job a decade ago and didn’t want to drive from the coast to a corporate gym every day. A friend of his from the bodybuilding scene offered a bargain price for equipment he had in storage, with the caveat that West haul it away within three days. The collection continued to grow as friends contributed their unused equipment.

As a finishing touch, the Wests asked Pastor Paul Richardson from Mariners Church to bless the space.

In both muscle training and setting up the garage, the Wests spare no detail. “Blue makes you lift heavier,” Craig explained as he pointed out the color scheme.

“I’m a big proponent of working on legs. Like a house, you’re only as strong as your foundation,” Craig said, warning that people who walk

into the garage to work on legs with him might end up crawling out at first.

During the pandemic, friends and neighbors did walk in. “Everyone is welcome as long as they leave it like they found it,” he said.

The couple starts their workout regimen at 4:30 a.m. with 30 minutes on the treadmill. By 6:30 a.m. they are getting ready for work. “Once you have something set up in your house, there’s no excuse,” Craig explained.

For anyone who needs a pleasant distraction while working up a sweat, it would be hard to beat the spectacular view of Pillar Point Harbor from trainer Wendy Jensen’s El Granada garage. When the CrossFit trainer’s gym in Fremont shut down during the pandemic, she and her family moved to the coast and Jensen declared that “no one will ever take my gym away from me again.”

The garage gym started with a rowing machine her husband Adam managed to snare for her on Amazon during the run on home fitness supplies. She added equipment she acquired from the Fremont gym that never reopened.

Her typical workout session starts with a warm up on a bike and includes squats, stretches and weights.

“COVID got us to the coast, and building this gym has been great for getting to know people and feel at home here.”

The busy mother and real estate agent still takes on some private fitness clients. Her advice for home gym startups is to have a dedicated space. “I worked out in the living room and there were toys lying around. Now it feels like I’m leaving the house when I go to the gym.”

rowing your own plants from seed has a lot of advantages: more variety, less cost and you can get a head start on the growing season, to name just a few. Practicality aside, it’s just plain miraculous to grow plants from seeds.

The process of putting hard, dry, seemingly lifeless bits into soil and seeing the transformation to a living plant is fun, fascinating and forms an amazing connection to the natural world. Some seeds can be sown directly into the ground, but others benefit from a gentler, more controlled beginning and February is the perfect time to get started.

If the rows of colorful seed packets are enticing but the idea of growing anything from seed seems daunting, fear not. If previous attempts have been disappointing, fear not. ▸ How seeds work: It can be as big as a coconut or as small as a speck of dust but every seed is a plant waiting to happen. On the outside is a protective covering known as a “coat.” On the inside is the “germ,” a tiny embryonic plant with a root, stem and one or more leaves.

Surrounding the germ is nutritive tissue or “endosperm,”

which sustains the incipient plant.

When soil temperature is right and sufficient moisture is available, the seed coat allows water and air to infiltrate, and the germination process can begin.

A tiny stem stretches upward, the Cotyledons unfold, turn green and disappear once the plant develops true leaves. ▸What seeds need: Three things are needed for germination: the right temperature, abundant moisture and sufficient oxygen. Too much or too little of any one of these factors will not lead to success. ▸Choices, choices: Unlike commercially grown seedlings, which are usually available in only one or two varieties, growing from seed gives you a much wider selection of varieties and allows you to select plants for conditions in your location. When selecting tomatoes and other seasonal crops, pay close attention to “days to maturity,” the term for the number of days it will take to produce fully ripened or mature produce. Varieties with fewer days to maturity are best for cooler, foggier areas.

Be sure to use seeds from a reputable supplier and check

the expiration date before purchase. ▸ Plan Ahead: Decide the number of plants you want to end up with when your seedlings are ready to transplant. Factor in that some seeds will fail to germinate and that some seedlings will not be sufficiently robust to “graduate” to the garden.

In general, seeds should be started six to eight weeks before the date you want to transfer to the garden.

Here are some basic terms and things you need to know to be successful planting seeds. ▸ Soil: Use a blend specifically formulated for starting seeds. It should be light and uniform in texture, sterile and nutrient rich. Never use “native” garden soil and avoid regular potting soil. Make sure soil is evenly moist prior to seeding. ▸ Containers: Just about any kind of container will work if it is clean and has drainage holes. “Clam shell” food containers, yogurt cups and other plastic packaging can be re-purposed along with nursery “six packs” and four-inch pots. Wash, rinse and sterilize by spraying with a solution of one part chlorine bleach to nine parts water and air dry before using. You can avoid containers altogether by using soil blocks. (See below for more information.) ▸ Seeding: Fill your containers about two-thirds full of soil and follow seed packet directions for planting depth and spacing. Seeds that are started closer together will require “up-potting” and/or thinning at a later stage. Note: some plants, such as squash, don’t like that kind of disruption and should stay in individual containers until transplanting time. ▸ Watering: Moisture is essential for germination and watering is best done from the bottom to avoid dislodging newly planted seeds. Place seeded containers in a solid tray that will hold water. (Concrete and mortar mixing trays are ideal.) Add water to the bottom of the tray to a depth of approximately ½ inch.

Seed containers should be checked frequently to make sure the soil is evenly moist but not wet or soggy.

Adjust the amount of water added to the tray to maintain adequate moisture while avoiding standing water for more than a few hours. Clear plastic covers help to retain moisture as does a light topping of vermiculite. ▸ Provide light and warmth: find a spot with bright, indirect light such as a sunny window and where temperature is between 65 and 70 degrees during the daytime and 55-60 at night. If the perfect spot is not to be found, consider using grow lights and specially designed heating mats for plant propagation. Both are inexpensive and energy efficient. ▸ Growing: Maintain proper moisture, light and warmth and in six to 21 days, seedlings will start to emerge. As soon as the true leaves appear, seedlings can be “up-potted” to larger containers. ▸ “Hardening off:” Young plants that have been grown indoors require gradual exposure to outdoor conditions. About two weeks before transplanting and when nighttime temperature has reached 50 degrees, start the process by moving plants outside to a shaded location during the day and bringing them inside at night. After that, gradually increase the amount of sun exposure during the day and allow plants to remain outside at night. ▸ Transplanting: When plants have been hardened off, it’s time to plant! Prepare beds well ahead of time, then dig holes the size and depth of the seedling pot (deeper for tomatoes). Allow adequate spacing for the size of the mature plant. Invert the pot, allowing the seedling to pass through your fingers and gently grasp the root ball. Invert and set the plant into the hole. Gently tamp down, adding more soil if necessary. Water carefully and finish by adding a layer of mulch.

It's no wonder that seeds and the act of planting are the basis of so many sayings and inspirational words. Whatever seeds you decide to sow, you will be part of an amazing, eternal process of renewal. COASTSIDE

The organization will reevaluate the magazine’s future in the coming weeks.

Special times from Pacifica to Pescadero ▸ Film festival brings crowds to big screen

The second annual Beach Break Entertainment Film Festival was an even bigger success than the inaugural event and invited film lovers across the coast to take a break from the holidays to see one or more of seven features that all had a coastal vibe.

Highlights included a performance by the Coastside Community Orchestra, which involved an introduction to the musicians’ instruments. Speaking of music, the festival included live musical performances by John Lester, Dylan and Steve Gallup, and Coastside legend Mauro ffortissimo, who was joined by friend and collaborator Dean Mermell.

The festival included animation, four locally produced short films and three receptions. It was a huge success, as evidenced by the fact that four films played to capacity audiences at the Coastal Repertory theater in Half Moon Bay.

Half Moon Bay’s first telephone operator

M

arion Quinlan was born in Half Moon Bay in 1903. She attended local schools, and after two years in high school she got a job.

“I worked in the telephone office in Half Moon Bay for three and a half years,” she said in a 1975 interview with the Spanishtown Historical Society. Quinlan was Half Moon Bay’s first telephone operator. “At that time there was an agent here by the name of Mrs. Angie Francis, and I worked for her.... Moss Beach, Pescadero, and Half Moon Bay all had agents who were appointed by the phone companies and were the ones in charge of the offices.”

Quinlan’s switchboard office was in the southwest corner of the building that, in the 1920s, became Cunha’s General Store. Constructed in 1900, the building originally housed Francis Brothers Merchandise Store and the Index Saloon.

In the early days of telephones, party lines were the rule, with several subscribers sharing a line. The party-line system provided no privacy and resulted in occasional conflicts. Some callers were polite —“Excuse me, the line is in use.” And some callers were not so polite. “Get off the line, would you!” Party lines were an excellent source of gossip, with nosy neighbors listening in. Party lines were also an effective way to circulate emergency information on the remote and rural Coastside.

A telephone switchboard was called an exchange. When a caller picked up the phone it activated a cable, and the cable’s associated lamp on the switchboard lit. Quinlan answered the incoming call “Number please?” When the caller gave the number, Quinlan plugged the cable into the appropriately numbered jack, closing the circuit and ringing the called person's telephone.

Each exchange had a name that identified it, and each telephone on the system was given a set of numbers to go with the exchange name.

The Half Moon Bay exchange was RAymond 6, which continues today as the first Half Moon Bay prefix of 726.

If the number wasn't on Quinlan's switchboard she transferred the call to the correct exchange—for example to Moss Beach, whose exchange was PArkview 8, today’s 728 prefix. An operator at that switchboard rang the telephone of the person being called.

In 1925, Qunilan married Bill Miramontes. In her 1975 interview with the Spanishtown Historical Society, she said, “I knew him all

my life and went to school with him. He's only eight months older than I am but I keep saying he's a year older!”

Bill “graduated from high school in 1921,” she said, “and then went to work in the oil fields. There were many companies drilling for oil around here at that time.” tandard Oil was one of the companies drilling for oil. Miramontes worked for them for 53 years, first as an oil driller, then delivering gas and oil to the Coastside.

When the couple bought property at the west end of Kelly Avenue “...the man at the bank said, 'Marion, do you realize that you are moving right back on the Miramontes land?'” That land was Arroyo de los Pilarcitos, the Mexican grant awarded to her husband’s great-grandfather, Candelario Miramontes in 1841.

Today as we travel around the Coastside we can imagine quieter times. “We walked to the beach on Sunday afternoons” Quinlan remembered. “We rode around in buggies, and going to Pescadero was a big thing.” Sometimes “...we hired a surrey and spent the day at Miramar.”

Social activities for Quinlan and her friends included going to dances—”We used to go to the American and Portuguese dances and especially enjoyed the Chamarita.” As automobiles replaced buggies “We went to San Gregorio, Pescadero, La Honda and to wherever they had dances and activities.”

However different those days were, the old buildings of historic Coastside towns give us a glimpse of Quinlan’s time. The original Cunha’s market burned down in 2003 but was rebuilt to look as it did in 1900, and we can imagine Quinlan at her switchboard in the southwest corner of Cunha’s Country Grocery. Light The hour right before sunset is almost always guaranteed to bring dreamy lighting. On Jan. 3, 2024, I spent that final hour of light photographing Pigeon Point Lighthouse. I was able to see firsthand just how many phases the sky and natural light go through as the world transitions from golden haze to a dark blue.

Add in some clouds from a recent storm, and the coast starts to resemble a neoclassical painting.
