When lockdown made walking close to home mandatory, a daily highlight for us was being able to step out onto the South West Coast Path from our front door and make our own little adventure.

Just the nudge we required to remind us of how lucky we are to have access to the 630 magical miles so close. The path to us has provided healing, escapism, challenge and inspiration, and we are purposely taking our time to walk it section by section and are just over halfway. It is out of this genuine infatuation that the idea for Coast Path Mag was born and has been on the back burner for several years. The recent pandemic provided the space for us to finally get this off the ground, and we hope in doing so, we can bring the magic of the path to you, the readers and followers.

Our underlying drive in doing so is to pay back in some small way to the path’s conservation for it to continue giving to many more generations to come.

We hope to offer you rich content from the coast path communities (walkers, runners, water lovers, nature lovers, adventurers, coastal lovers and more) for our growing coast path community.

As coast path lovers, we hope you enjoy the mag, but also, if you can, we urge you to take that leap and immerse yourself into a section of the path and all that it can offer – which is a lot!

Our work on the ground Measures to help control the impact and spread of COVID-19 has impacted our management and maintenance of the Coast Path. However, we are working closely with all our partners and stakeholders, for who the SWCP is very much a priority. Work has not stopped entirely though, here is some of the recent improvements we’ve been able to make along the Path.

Annual Appeals: Thanks to our annual appeals ‘Step Up’ and ‘Find Your Way’ we have continued to provide high quality step boards and waymarking to help people enjoy the National Trail. The most recent batch of 80 oak and chestnut steps boards were delivered to the National Trust in North Devon in December, enabling work to upgrade sections of the Path between Ilfracombe and Croyde. This same stretch of Path is benefitting from new oak directional signage, with 9 new fingerposts and 2 new way marker posts.

Other new way marking includes 3 fingerposts for the Path within Exmoor National Park, and new fingerposts in Cornwall.

Gurnards Head, West Cornwall: Following ongoing coastal erosion a recent landslip, we’ve been working with Cornwall Council and the National Trust to formalise a new alternative alignment, enabling walkers to safely enjoy the wonderful views of this dramatic coastline.

Little Dartmouth, South Devon: Following the appearance of a sink hole, our work is underway with the National Trust and Devon County Council to identify a new alignment for the Path. Related work is likely to include new fencing, scrub management and path levelling.

Tinsey Head, South Devon: Working alongside the National Trust, we funded contractors to construct new fencing to realign the Path away from the unstable, eroding cliff edge.

Blackpool Sands, South Devon: We’re working with Devon County Council to reinstate a section of Path that was damaged following the collapse of a large Monterey Pine that came down during a storm.

The Lizard, West Cornwall: The SWCP above Pentreath Beach (between Kynance Cove and Lizard Point) has been subject to two recent cliff falls, with part of the Path already lost. The ground is still very unstable, and more erosion is very likely. Without urgent realignment, a full closure will soon be required, potentially requiring a lengthy diversion. We are helping to monitor the situation and have already allocated funds to of £3,500 towards to start work on realigning 200m of the Trail.

Branscombe, East Devon: We’ve allocated over £7,000 to improvements in the East Cliff and West Cliff areas around Branscombe. Improvements will be caried out by the National Trust and are planned to include replacing a steep, narrow eroded set of steps on a popular, well used path - the scrub around the existing steps will be removed to create space for the path to be reworked into a zig-zag formation which will provide a more comfortable gradient for walkers.

West Bay-Freshwater, Dorset: Following a large-scale cliff fall, we were able to support Dorset Council with works to realign the path further inland, improve the width and replace an old, barbed wire fence, with a new high tensile plain wire fence.

Our fight against plastic pollution Helping to keep our trails and oceans plastic-free is really important to us, which is why we’ve partnered up with friends at Refill and Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) to help fight against plastic pollution. With Refill, the organisation that connects people with locations to eat, drink and shop with less waste, we’re getting to the root of the problem. Together, we’ll be working to engage more business across the South West to join the free scheme and to promote their app which shows all the places walkers can already visit. With SAS, we’re supporting the Million Mile Clean, which aims to get 100,000 volunteers walking 10 miles to collectively clean up a million miles (or 1,588 times round the Coast Path! Hitting over 10k members We’ve been looking after the South West Coast Path since 1973, before it was even a complete long-distance trail. In this time, our work to protect and improve the Path has only possible thanks to the continued support of our members. We are delighted to therefore announce that we have now signed up over 10,000 members – which is an important milestone for the charity.

With over 9 million visitors to the Path, we hope we can persuade even more people to support our work and make an even bigger difference to the trail.

Summary

Challenging - Coastal and field footpaths which can be muddy, quiet roads and green lanes, some gentle ups and down.

A circular walk between two Iron Age enclosures thought to have been built by the Celtic Dumnonii tribe who inhabited the South Westover 2000 years ago. Both sites are on high ground with terrific views over the coast and countryside.

In summer, the high cliffs are fringed with wildflowers, and the ancient green lanes used on the inland part of the walk are scented by the banks of honeysuckle tumbling over the hedges.

Butterflies linger in the flowers, and skylarks and meadow pipits trill high overhead. It is a good walk in autumn too, when you may spot migratory seabirds passing offshore on their way west. Look out for skuas, terns and Manx shearwaters.

Route Description

From the village hall car park in Malborough take the footpath out of the corner near the petrol station. Crossing the top of Collaton Road, turn left along with Higher Town.

Just beyond the Old Inn, turn right down Chapel Lane. Carry on ahead along Great Lane, turning left at the end, where it meets Luckhams Lane, and turn right a moment later, towards the fields. Follow the footpath along the edge of two fields to go through the kissing gate on the left and into the big field beyond.

Although there is very little trace of it now, in the mid to late Iron Age - probably sometime between 350 BC and AD43 - there was a substantial hillfort here. At the time when the field was enclosed, this was known as Castle Park, but around the eighteenth century, it was known as the Burleigh Dolts Camp. According to Bailey's Dictionary, published in1745, 'Burley' meant big, or heavy, and 'doke' was a ditch or furrow.

The hillfort consisted of ramparts and ditches forming three concentric circles (circles inside each other).

These provided shelter for a small ovoid central enclosure, which may have included a number of residential roundhouses. The site has far-reaching views in all directions, which would have enabled the inhabitants to keep an eye open for a possible attack.

Archaeologists believe that sites like this might not have been permanently occupied; however, and were probably used for trade, religious ceremonies and general gatherings, and possibly for storage too.

There are many of these hillforts around the South West Coast Path, dating from the same period, and it is thought that they belonged to the Celtic tribe known as the Dumnonii. These people occupied the area within today's South West Coast Path - all of Devon and Cornwall, with some parts of Dorset and Somerset included too. They were a scattered tribe, with no currency and no central organisational structure, but they were particularly noted for their hospitality towards strangers.

The commanding views over the countryside and the coast meant that this was a prime site at various other times too. A recent geophysical survey of the field found traces of what are thought to be burial mounds from the Bronze Age, which went before the Iron Age. In 1789 a seventeenth-century silver coin 10

of Charles I was found indicating that the hillfort may have been re-occupied then. Within the inner circuit, a brick bunker (now used as a reservoir) remains from the Second World War, when there was a radar station here.

In 1950 the landowner bulldozed the field to level it in the post-war drive for agricultural development in rural areas, and much of the hillfort was demolished.

The current landowner has returned the field to pastureland, which makes it easier to see where the ramparts once were.

Retrace your steps via Chapel Lane and Higher Town, back to the junction by the petrol station. This time turn right down Collaton Road and right again a moment later, by the 20 mph signs. Bear left almost immediately to walk down Well Hill. Bear left onto the public footpath towards the end, just before the road curves to the right downhill and carry on along the lane. In front of the farmhouse at Portlemore, Barton carry straight on along the track signed to Furzedown, taking the track on the right as you approach Furzedown Farm.

Reaching the road, turn left, taking the footpath on the right a moment later, by the National Trust's South Down Farm sign, to cross two fields. At the far left-hand corner of the second field, cross the stone stile to carry straight on, turning left at the waymarker. On the far side of South Down Farm take the waymarked footpath, heading north-west, to a T-junction on a green lane.

Turn left onto the lane (Jacob's Lane), signed to Bolberry Down.

Jacob's Lane is one of many green lanes in the South Hams. These are ancient pathways used by the local people for many centuries - in some cases for several millennia - as they travelled between home, the village, the church, the pub, the shoreline and their fields .

At the road, turn left, crossing the cattle grid at Bolberry Down and carrying on ahead until you come to theSouth West Coast Path. On the Coast Path, turn right to follow the acorn waymarkers above the cliffs to the tip of the headland at Bolt Tail.

During the Second World War, there was a busy radar station at Bolberry Down, part of a chain protecting England'ssouth and east coasts.

Turn right on the road and follow it back into Malborough. Cut through the churchyard to walk along Higher Town and back to the car park at the start of the walk.

All Saints Church is sometimes known as 'The Cathedral of the South Hams'. The church was one of many along the south coast where a beacon bonfire was lit to raise the alarm when the Spanish Armada was sighted offshore in 1588.

The rampart built across the headland during the Iron Age is very much easier to see than the bulldozed ramparts of Burleigh Dolts. This promontory fort is thought to date from around 600 BC (earlier than the Burleigh Dolts hillfort). It used the sheer cliffs as defences against any possible attack from the sea.

From Bolt Tail retrace your steps to the Coast Path and follow it to Inner Hope, turning left on the road at the bottom of the steps by the slipway. Bear left towards Outer Hope a moment later.

In the past, the whole Torbay area was the English fleet's principal anchorage. In the nineteenth century, as many as several dozen ships sometimes anchored together in Hope Cove, as they all sought shelter from storms at sea. Reaching the cove required careful navigation, though, and the deadly rocks around this part of the coastline were responsible for many shipwrecks. The most tragic of these was the HMS Ramillie, which went down in 1760, with the loss of 700 lives.

By St Clements Church a public footpath heads up the steps signed to Galmpton.

Turn right onto this path, crossing the road to continue up a private drive. Carry on along the footpath ahead, walking alongside the right-edge of several fields to where a track crosses yours, heading to Bolberry.

Ignore this track to carry straight on ahead, leading to the far right-hand corner of the net field and then carrying straight on to cross a stile onto the road.

You don’t even need to be there to be touched by this special trail, as often just browsing images and descriptions of the path can lift spirits.

S

o, it’s no surprise then that on World Health Day we celebrated this wonderful trail and the communities that look after it, as new results of a recent study have concretely proven that all the benefits people feel from the path are real and continue to be fantastic for us.

I grew up next to the SWCP in Falmouth, Cornwall and I live here still. A walk along the trail near my home has been part of a regular routine for most of my life without even thinking about it. Whether it’s a quick stroll to see a friend, a run before work or a longer hike when I want to challenge myself, the trail always welcomes me in, and I never regret the effort. The outdoors is good for us all, but the magical combination of being in the elements with the sea keeping you company along one side is an extraspecial gift. Further studies have shown that being in blue spaces in coastal environments are hugely beneficial for happiness, so our beautiful SWCP provides a double dose of the good stuff with its green and blue spaces combined.

The South West Coast Path has been in my life for as long as I can remember; hoisted aloft my father’s shoulders as we walked as a family on sunny days, ducking branches and giggling at rabbits on the path.

It’s always been my place of refuge away from the stresses and strains of life, but when I was struck down with mysterious pain through my body in my early twenties, it was a place to seek respite and solace for both my mind and body. As my pain turned chronic and with little answers from doctors at the time, my mobility gradually lessened, and I could only shuffle short stretches or be driven to path lookout points by family or friends. In these dark times it was the path and the sea I returned to. It soothed me, gave me strength and put my issues into perspective amidst the roiling seas and the trail that showed the passage of seasons. The visible change in nature reassured me that nothing is permanent, and that 18

every tricky path and slippery climb will be rewarded with a view and an easier walk on the other side.

Many years later, and after an odyssey to find a resolution for my chronic pain, I found healing success overseas with some physical specialists.

I was able to rebuild my physical strength and stamina over time and eventually hiked the Appalachian Trail (Southbound) in the USA in 2019. This was over 2,000 miles of walking in 5-6 months, and I was amazed at the mental and physical benefits it brought to my life both on trail and when I returned. Simply walking had become literally life-changing. After returning home from America, it became very clear to me that I wanted to get back onto the trail of my childhood, the South West Coast Path, and explore it from start to finish. So, between lockdowns in 2020 I set about to start SWCP from Minehead and walk all the way around to Poole Harbour in Dorset. 630 miles of sea and coastal trail.

I had first attempted my Thru-hike of the SWCP in late February 2020, only to be stymied by days of storms, mudslides and gale-force winds that threatened serious injury if I didn’t take them seriously and step away from the trail. I was disappointed but had learned to respect the elements and listen to their warnings. So, I waited for a better window and set out in late July 2020 with my pack on my back and the sun on my face – a much more palatable prospect!

My mileage was reasonably high from the start.

Although I was contending with some pain and injury from my recent Appalachian Trail thru hike, my body remembered the cadence of distance walking and was delighted to be back doing it. Under dappled pathways with glimpses of green through blue I felt a surge of joy again. The undeniable rightness of being in nature and washed over by the slow, inexorable growth and healing of outdoor spaces. And it’s not only the path itself that heals and brings happiness, but also the people it draws to itself. Walking outdoors seems to bring out the best in folks, and it’s rare to

not see a smile or a friendly ‘hello!’ when passing strangers on trail. The warmth of community is plain to see, as people stop and chat at stiles and by benches. Walkers are always happy to share their experiences, wildlife sightings and generally commune over how darn good they’re feeling, even if their feet and backs ache from time to time from the undulating terrain and cliff climbs.

Walking the trail, especially in the summer months, needs some preparation.

Accommodation is plentiful but does get booked quickly so it’s well worth phoning ahead. I didn’t wild camp on my trip because it isn’t legally allowed. Many do however, and in previous years it’s been possible to stealth camp following strict Leave No Trace principles and be gone early enough to not bother anyone.

However last year (and this) with the surge of visitors to the trail, I didn’t want to add to the increasing problem of people who camp without understanding how to keep the trail healthy and pristine. Instead, I called ahead to campsites and explained I was a ‘walk in’. They always seemed to keep some spaces free for walkers, and even in the height of summer, I was never turned away. Occasionally I even splurged on a B&B which was very welcome after a week or two of tent-life! Resupplying with food was simple and easy. I kept some freeze-dried meals for emergencies stashed in my bag, but most villages and towns had small shops or supermarkets to find food-to-go, or cafes where you could sit outside and eat. Water could prove harder to access due to covid worries, but there were often outside taps that shops were happy to point me to, and public toilets with sinks where water bottles could be filled.

Walking the SWCP wasn’t always easy, and I didn’t expect it to be. For every gentle hill and beautiful lookout, there was a scramble or mud and steep steps. These were never wholly unwelcome, though, as there is nothing quite like the taste of tea and scones after a long exhausting climb, or the feel of a hot bath at the end of a 15-mile day of rain and sea mist. I may have had some blisters from my shoes and pack rub from the straps on my shoulders, but my body was very capable of hiking the path – even in the face of so many years of chronic pain and limited movement. It’s really just walking, and if you can put one foot in front of another, even for a short time, then you can hike the South West Coast Path.

It doesn’t matter how long a walk takes you; you’ll still receive the benefits!

Every physical ache and pain was worth the experience and nothing was so bad that it made me want to quit. The trail is kind, with friendly villages and towns scattered along where you can rest awhile. A long walk takes as long as it takes, and to 20

me, it’s never about the miles covered and the finish line, but much more about the journey itself and the experience it gives you if you let it. It’s not reductive to say that hiking the South West Coast Path made me happy; it’s plainly true. Whether it’s a multi-day hike, a Thru or a stroll, time on the path energises and strengthens me, and I am not alone.

Just as you might examine the trail as you plan your days and look at your maps, the trail examines you back. It will expose your strengths and weaknesses, gently giving you things to be proud of and things to work on in equal balance. You cannot help but be proud of a long hike on the SWCP, but also of shorter excursions that bring happiness no matter how long you walk. I would advise anyone who dreams of hiking the SWCP to make time in their diaries to do it. Perhaps pick a stretch for a trial day-hike before committing to longer distances, but once you do a little, I think you’ll be back for more. Make sure you revisit the Countryside Code and keep the farmers and their livestock in mind, and you’ll be set for a lovely trip. Slide on those good shoes, socks and shoulder a well-packed bag, and set off for some guaranteed smiles and miles.

My name is Fi Smith, and I live in Somerset.

I enjoy a busy life juggling roles as Mum and Parent Carer to my two beautiful children who have Autism, a SEN Teaching Assistant and Artist.

realised a long time ago that exercising in the great outdoors was the best way for me to cope with whatever challenges life threw at me. However, it wasn't until I escaped for a day on the SWCP during a family holiday in North Cornwall did my walking become a life-changing passion.

I parked up in Tintagel in July 2018, half excited, half racked with anxiety and self-doubt. I decided to come out on a whim after joining a friendly SWCP community on Facebook, seeing someone's post and realising this section was a doable drive from our hotel.

So there I was alone at the crack of dawn starting off the path section feeling decidedly wobbly, daunted by how close the path seemed to the sea and the lofty climbs ahead. However, the anxiety about how this day would pan out was short-lived as I became totally overwhelmed by the awe-inspiring beauty of the path and how incredibly emotional I felt. Less than a mile into the walk, I was absolutely convinced this was what I wanted to do with every precious moment of my spare time, a missing puzzle piece falling into place.

I ended up walking two sections that day, getting the bus back from Crackington Haven exhausted, starving but mostly full of excitement like my eyes had been opened. My love affair well truly began when I became a fully paid-up member, and armed with the guide, I started to cherry-pick sections I could complete, linking them to family holidays, day trips or overnight stays. When I wasn't on the path, I read up on the local areas, planned my journeys and made diary entries to keep myself going. Luckily my family have been so supportive, allowing me to escape to treat myself to the coastal respite I've come to love.

Being on the path has had another remarkable effect on my life. I started painting again after my kit had long been resigned to the understairs cupboard gathering dust. When I paint, I get to relive the beauty repeatedly, which has become especially important during the past year as a way of still feeling connected to the path. I was absolutely delighted in 2020 to be featured by the South West Coast Path Association on their 'Inspired by the Coast' series alongside other artists for whom the trail plays a large part in their work. Connecting my passions for art and walking has been an easy one as a massive part of the path's allure is the diverse views, nature, and colour of the landscapes. The difficultly, really, as an Artist, is narrowing it down and deciding what to paint first!

It may be many years before I complete the path, only being away from home in short bursts, but to me, that isn't important. I feel so lucky just being on the path, whether it's the excitement of a new section or the joy of revisiting the well-trodden routes on our family caravan trips. 'm doing it in bite-sized chunks. That tactic lends itself quite well to a blog, with a few pictures and some words, coupled with a growing passion for it. Maybe some lessons learned about kit, training, logistics, and nutrition might be a helpful resource for anyone else who has it on their to-do list.

So I started from Beer, near Seaton in Devon. Having bivvied out on Beer Head itself to watch the Perseids with George, getting up the next day and running along a very hilly section to Budleigh Salterton was the 'start' for me. At first, about half of my motivation for running along the often brutal hills was training for mountain days. I've successfully used the SWCP for training towards holidays in the Alps or domestic trips to the mountains. But the rest of the motivation, sorry to say, but I'll put it out there: was Distraction Aversion Therapy. It is a way of getting some headspace away from thinking about a relationship or maybe thinking about it, both probably—time alone to be processing stuff. Running as meditation and just making it less easy to text her, call, or mope.

So having got to Budleigh, with transport home from George, I'd sown a seed. Some of the hills along this stretch are outrageous. I was painfully naïve. Around Sidmouth and Weston, I swear I had to put my hand down on the grass more than once; it was that steep.

A few days later, I ran from Budleigh via Ladram Bay and Exmouth, then along the Exe Estuary to 'home', in Exeter. A week later again, I ran with my Dad (riding a bike) along the other side of the Exe to a friendly pub at Cockwood called The Anchor Inn, and then I'd stitched together about 30-35 miles or so, and it felt significant enough to build on. But still not a concrete plan; I just thought I'd cover an extensive section and see if I felt like doing more. Or if I still needed more therapy. But once I had a little completed stretch to build on, the urge to build on it was there, for sure. I really wanted to go further and see more. I printed out a little South West England map and drew a bright red line along the little stretch of coast that I'd run along. I started to look at the map and see the next bit and the next, and I wanted to make that line longer.

The next leg was another very steep one. Running from Cockwood to Berry Head was about 32 miles (my last training run before an amateurish Bob

Graham Round attempt). It included vertiginous sections between Teignmouth and Babbacombe that made even walking hard. It is quite a lot of time spent in the woods here - lovely and atmospheric, but not much view of the sea or the coast. The woods were punctuated by a few glorious coves with crystal waters and small beaches. Beaches with pubs on.

People were sitting and enjoying their days. Envy.

Why wasn't I normal? This leg was very chastening, physically. It also covered some of the least beautiful ground so far: running the seafront streets of Torquay, Paignton and Goodrington, dodging seagulls and dozens of holidaying families - I must admit to being in a grump and hating human beings. Families with screaming kids, dogs on long leads, pushing baby-buggies while texting - not only made running a zig-zagging hazard but were a stark contrast to the serenity and solitude I'd been experiencing for the previous 3-4 hours.

My times were demoralisingly slow too. Warts and all (taking photos, having a wee in the hedge, scoffing a squashed sandwich, adding and removing jackets, and walking up hills) I was doing about 10 minutes a mile. This felt embarrassing. But I don't think sweat stopped dripping from my nose from the moment I started to the moment I stopped, so I couldn't have pushed much harder, really. I wasn't doing this for self-flagellation, just meditation, and I wanted

to enjoy it as well. In late September, I was lucky enough to fly to Menorca for Trail Running Magazine and complete a 3-day Ultra around the Menorca coastline. Without meaning to sound arrogant - this was an absolute breeze by comparison. Hearing other participants confessing their intimidation of and then seeing them struggle on - the hilly sections, and then actually tackling them thinking 'that's not a real hill!' gave me a confidence boost that the SWCP certainly wasn't easy. It had got me fitter, and I wasn't as weak as I'd thought.

I started with Justin on the next leg - how he likes to conduct his business meetings. He set off from Berry Head like a bloody whippet, and I immediately struggled to maintain a conversation and resorted to asking lots of open questions. He turned around at the Kingswear - Dartmouth ferry, and I carried on - excited to be heading into what must be one of the most beautiful stretches of the entire track: The South Hams. Then: Cramp. The heck? What do you mean, cramp? Shut up, legs. This was pretty annoying. I'd taken my fitness for granted a little bit and just assumed I'd muddle through, but in hindsight, I'd been too big for my boots. Neglecting any actual 'training' and getting by just winging it on one long 20+ mile leg every 7-10 days. Consequently, each leg would leave me battered for a day or two, and each leg I'd be conking out by the end, gradually

tightening up, shortening my gait, settling into a sort of death trudge, and muttering darkly as I inched towards the days' endpoint.

So that got me as far as Torcross. I hobbled into the village along the gorgeously aesthetic sweep of Slapton Sands, pretty much spent, truth be told, when my actual aim for the day had been Salcombe!

Ha. Eyes bigger than belly again. It's pretty easy to sit at home and look at the map and think, 'Right, I'll just run from there to there, and then the reality of the terrain slaps you painfully back into your place.

At this stage, the time on my own started to make a real impact on me. Hours and hours and hours alone.

Hardly passing anyone. Lots of time admiring the ever-changing sky.

Starting to feel slightly mazed by it all. I lost track of the amount of 'moments' I had, where I might startle an entire field of partridges into noisy flight, or see a peregrine chasing seagulls, or catch a starling murmuration, or notice a seal in the cove. What had started off as a tick-list exercise had become something more existential?

I thought of her a lot. Running over conversations in my head. Thinking of cleverer replies that I wish I'd used at the time. I never managed to get my camera out fast enough to share a picture of a dolphin pod breaching in the bay or a herd of horses briefly galloping alongside me. I never run with music and instead listen to the rhythm of my breathing and footsteps, and try to soak up the elements, but all that time in ones own head, constantly exposed to natures ways... I know how it sounds. I saw so much great light, sea and rocks, and really felt beauty is out there every day. You just need to put yourself in the way of it.

My first logistical near-miss was at Salcombe. Turning up tired, wet with sweat, and quickly chilly in the December gloaming, I realised with dread that I might have taken the ferry for granted. East Portlemouth was a ghost town, and after a mild panic, I saw that there was timetabled to be one more crossing on this day, at this time of year. It was still a long anxious wait, 'what if he knocks off early?'. The estuary cuts deeply into the surrounding land, complex, tidal, and frankly a long bloody detour. I asked the ferryman, "So how long is it to get around without your help?"

He said, "Well, it's a 45-minute car ride". Gulp. That would have been a long, cold walk in the dark. I would have considered swimming.

The next leg from Salcombe to Noss Mayo was the best yet. I was getting the hang of it now. A dream of a run where every corner turned seemed to present a new jaw-dropping deserted cove. Running past iconic little landmarks like The Bantham Hand and Burgh Island, and even a waded river crossing in the Erme Estuary felt like getting stuck into a mini-adventure.

With the tide on its way in, this got as deep as that area of the inner thigh that makes you do an involuntary high pitched yelp. I've got a friend who ran this stretch and swam all 3 river estuaries. That's hardy (and admirably pure), but she's a legend; this is December, and I'm not made of such stern stuff.

Finishing that leg at Noss Mayo, empty of energy but high in spirits, was really lovely. I was close to Plymouth now and having completed all of the South Devon path. Noss Mayo was a real hidden gem as well. Salcombe, Dartmouth, and numerous other coastal towns and villages are beautiful places to live or visit. But Noss Mayo made me say 'wow' out loud. Wonderful. One of many places I'd dearly like to spend some time with her.

My last South Devon stage from Wembury to Plymouth was physically much easier, and scenically, not as spectacular. It starts wild and windswept at Wembury with great views of Mew Rock.

Geographically not as hilly either and shorter too at only 13 miles, this leg was akin to tying up a loose end. Plymouth Sound is impressive to see, and with more time, you could explore the various historically significant Naval sites. But beyond that, the path winds through some very urban ground. Housing estates, docks, industrial estates - all a bit grotty, some litter and graffiti and a culture shock after what's passed before in the South Hams.

Then Plymouth Hoe and into the City Centre and then suddenly that was South Devon done.

It felt very satisfying to have run the whole of the South Devon coast. Very rewarding to have made a sizeable linear journey. I was excited to cross the border into Cornwall and see its comparison. It had a lot to live up to. Still, thoughts of the iconic sites I'd pass: Bedruthan Steps, Kynance Cove, The Lizard, Lands End, Sennen and Bosigran, Porthcurno, the aesthetic arc of Mounts Bay... my appetite was well and truly whetted, and besides, my contemplation wasn't over yet.

Chasing Golden Cornwall based Photographer Liam Alford, shares his passion for both photography and the South West Coast Path.

Why photography?

I studied fine art back in college, and a part of that course included photography and using the darkroom.

During that course, I realised how much I enjoyed photography and was always fascinated by seeing my ideas come to life. It wasn't until around five years ago that I started getting really into landscape photography and roaming my local coastline when I got my first digital camera.

What does the South West Coast Path mean to you?

Everything I grew up here, and we were a very outdoors family and were always at the beach or exploring cliffs and caves. It's where I go to relax and forget about things. Watching the sunrise and sunsets is impressive as each one is always different.

Favourite section of the coast path?

Wow, that's a tricky question, isn't it? For me, it would have to be the Gwithian Towans section. Such happy memories, playing along there as a kid and jumping down the giant rolling sand dunes. The path overlooks St Ives bay which is so big and has the best sunsets.

Favourite coast shot?

It has to be a very recent drone shot I took down at Gwithian; actually, the sun had just risen, and it was really hazy with a slight mist in the air. From above, you can see the grandeur of the cliffs. Gwithian beach almost looks unrecognisable.

What advice would you give to people just taking up photography and aim to get good coast shots?

Patience and optimism are your best friends! Arrive early and wait that 10 minutes extra, just in case. Try and go when the sun is low to get the best shadows and the famous 'golden hour.' If you are unsure whether to leave the house or not thinking 'the sun might not even come out, go, worst-case scenario, you get some fresh air, and typically, that's when you get your best shots. I try to include people in my shots to add a sense of scale to my images.

What equipment would you recommend to a beginner?

You can get a decent entry-level digital camera now for a few hundred pounds. Search the market and do your research first to find a camera that best suits your intentions. Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Fuji are the leading brands to look out for. Always remember the equipment is only as good as the person behind it. It's not all about how much you spend.

What inspires your shots?

I mainly follow other local photographers on social media pages or photography magazines. I spend a lot of time on google maps searching for potential spots that could work with various sun positions throughout the year. Some days I find myself lacking the motivation to go out and shoot, and then I'll see a great sunset photo somewhere, and that's enough to get me up and gone in minutes.

Do you have any unique stories to share with us?

It wasn't on the path, but while I was surfing, it was a cold spring morning, and myself and one other keen surfer were out at Godrevy and waiting on a set to come through when a pod of 40 or more dolphins suddenly surrounded us. The sun was shining, and it was the most magical thing to experience; we both caught waves at the same time as the dolphins were surfing them too. I'll keep that memory forever.

What are your views on the conservation of the path?

I think it's vital to protect our coastal paths, and organisations such as the National Trust and the South West Coast Path Association do a great job.

We are so lucky to be surrounded by coastline.

Erosion is a natural problem that is difficult to prevent; however, the coast path's ongoing conservation projects allow us to enjoy it.

TELL IT TO THE SEA We caught up with Hele Bay Merbabes founder, Terri Ingram on her passion for sea swimming and everything outdoors.

How and why did you get into sea swimming?

For me, this was probably like most people, by accident. I only live a one-minute walk from the beach and have lived here for four years. Before I eventually got in the sea, I'd lived here for two and a half years and just used to sit on the beach and never ever wanted to get in the sea. I never wanted to walk around in a swimming costume in front of people, so it never even entered my mind to get in the sea. However, one day I was with a few friends, and a couple of them did get in, and they were shouting, "just come in". I don't know why, I thought, just move fast! So, I legged it to the sea and got in as quick as I could, and literally within a few moments of being in the sea, I thought, "Oh, this is nice". It was a beautifully hot day, and we just kind of fooled around, and I thought, you know what, I absolutely loved this and stayed in for ages. The very next day, I went back again, and I said to myself I'm going to get in the sea today. I was still very covered up at this stage, as much as I could be. From that moment, I just kept

going back, and that was at the end of August, and I thought to myself, I'm just going to keep going. I had stopped visiting the beach to sit on the beach; I was now going to get in the sea. September and October arrived, and we would say to ourselves if we don't get in, we don't get in, we'll just keep going and see how we go. We did just that; probably maybe once or twice, my friend didn't get in because of the waves.

In fact, I don't mind the waves, but she's not keen on them. So even on the days where our heads were saying 'it's too rough, I would still always get in for a quick dip, always.

So how do you think sea swimming has changed you?

I feel like I'm unrecognisable; what used to be important to me is so not important now. For example, in my industry as a hairdresser, how you look and how you present yourself is high on the agenda. Society suggests you have to reflect the industry that you're in. I have always loved pool swimming, but previously the reason I wouldn't go was because of what chlorine does to your hair, so I would always say no, I'm not doing that.

Another example is when I would go down to the sea, for probably about the first six or seven months I wouldn't wear a swim hat. My inner voice was saying, I'm not wearing a swim hat. Now, I think what it's giving me is this body confidence, but it's also just given me a sense of I just don't care. I just really enjoy what I do, and I get so much more from it than when I used to spend time worrying about what people think I looked like, and it's fantastic. The noticeable difference is I'm 50 this year, and if you had asked me a year ago what I would like for my birthday, I would have definitely said a Mulberry handbag or Louboutin shoes. Now, I would like a Swimtrek holiday, some walking shoes, or a really decent rucksack, so it's definitely changed me.

Has it changed your mental state, do you think?

Fortunately, I've never been someone that has suffered massively with any sort of any significant mental health condition, but we all have times in life where life can get you down. I just find that the moment I get in the sea, everything just goes; it is just that sense of calm, along with being completely and utterly invigorated.

My son is a filmmaker, and he's been doing a bit of filming with me swimming, and we're calling it "Tell it to the sea". Whenever I'm feeling anxious or anything, even my husband says to me now, "go tell it to the sea", and that's my favourite saying. The sea, it's just got magical powers, I just think it really sorts you right out".

Do you have a relationship with the coast path, and what does it mean to you?

I do, that's something that I do with my husband because he doesn't enjoy the sea with me. He will kayak and bodyboard, but he certainly won't just get in for a swim. But what we do together is walk the coast path, and I think before we moved here, we also didn't realise that would be something that we would love so much as well. Living so close to the coastal path, whenever we decide we're going to go away somewhere, now I have to stay close to the sea, but we always check out that section of the coast path

and always walk it. When I'm using the coastal path, I'm also thinking about where can I swim.

What is your favourite section of the path, and why?

I've got a couple; it's all very local for me. We have walked all around Tintagel, and I love all that; it's beautiful; however, I'd say my favourite stretch that I walk is either from the lighthouse to Morte Point or from Ilfracombe across to Lee Bay. Although the coast path feels like a killer in places, and often you wonder, why am I doing this?

Actually, it's fantastic if you do it on a beautiful day. I particularly love the lighthouse to Morte Point section, as I've seen seals there nearly every time. That is, even though I don't want to swim with seals, I love to watch them from above.

Tell me a bit about your new sea swim coaching business and why you are starting it?

The why is because of lockdown; I'm a hairdresser and teach hairdressing, with a massive part of my business doing wedding hair. Because I hadn't been able to do any of that, I'd been idle, and all I had really done was to swim. When the roadmap out of lockdown was announced, I went into a bit of a panic. I had been enjoying swimming so much. I just happened to mention to a few friends that they were probably going to really laugh at me, but that I just couldn't bear the thought of not being able to swim as often as I wanted to and just getting bogged down with the hairdressing and stuff, and that I'd really like to train to be a swim coach.

In my mind, I thought that by being a swim coach, I could blank out some weekends and work with people on a one-to-one basis. The people that I want to train are people like me, basically. I'd been dipping for over a year, but I'd not started swimming. I began to figure out how I could swim front crawl better by progressing and teaching myself, but what I had been searching for that whole time was somebody to teach me. There's only one place in North Devon to go, and even though I went for an open water swimming session with them, I still didn't get any help with my

stroke. It was more about getting in the sea and what to expect, but I was getting in the sea in all kinds of weathers, so to progress, what was on offer to me was to book a pool session, but we weren't able to do so because of lockdown. So that's where the business idea for coaching open water swimming was born. If I go and get my coaching course, I can help people.

When talking through our anxieties about going back to our existing full-time jobs and not getting in the sea as much, my friend felt the same, so we have undertaken the Swimming Teachers Association Open Water Swimming Coaching qualification together. I'm older, so we hope my clientele will be me, and very much beginners and her clientele will

probably be more her age group and more slightly more advanced. This year, we're going to start slowly by offering set days to offer to coach and just see how it goes.

Do you have any memorable stories that you would like to share?

I experienced what it feels like to get into a spot of bother in the sea when everything was a bit against us, but we went in anyway. It was low tide, it was like a turning tide, an offshore wind, and the waves were crazy. We just thought a dip is fine, but it dropped

off really quickly, and we suddenly realised we both couldn't stand up and that we were being taken out.

We kind of both looked at each other, and to this day, we both say to each other, we really remember each other's face because they changed instantly. We had to swim across to get out of the pull; that was a real lesson for me. I learnt a lot from that day, and I'm super cautious now and don't take any chances.

We are very mindful of treating the sea with respect.

significant to mention, really, to other people, what I've set up and what I have achieved myself might seem to be, but it's just my normal.

I guess the biggest surprise for me personally has been setting up the 'Merbabes' Facebook group; (a community of female sea swimmers) and how massive that's got, and how many people are involved now, that just absolutely blows my mind. It's so lovely that anyone wanting to go for a dip can use the Facebook page to find a buddy to swim with, so no one is ever in the sea on their own. The group has built some true friendships, with many getting together and supporting each other in more ways than they probably know. There have been community activities set up, including sea swimming, surfing, paddle-boarding, cycling, open water swimming, walking, for example, but it's happening all over the country, isn't it now, I guess. Sea swimming is just huge currently. I can't think of anything massively

Yes, I would say there are initially two essentials.

A swim hat to make swimming more efficient, because not only does that make a difference for people like me with long hair when you're trying to swim, and it gets in the way, but it actually keeps you warm as well. You're also more easily spotted in the sea with a brightly coloured swim hat. I also recommend a tow float, they're also great for getting you seen, but if you run into a bit of trouble, to calm yourself, you can grab your float, which provides time to relax a little, and then begin to swim in. A gamechanger for winter swimming if you wanted to do skins is neoprene socks and gloves, because if your extremities don't feel the cold, you can stay in that little bit longer.

Is there any equipment you would recommend for beginner sea swimmers?

The RNLI suggested over 300 extra call outs for paddleboarders last year; what are your thoughts about this?

That doesn't surprise me; that can happen so quickly.

Our friends have a paddleboard that they leave at our house. One day, we all met down the beach, and all had a little go. One of the guys took it out, and I think the wind direction just changed or something, and before I knew it, he was right out past the buoy.

Luckily one of my friend's husbands had a kayak on the beach as well; he managed to get out on a kayak and was able to bring him back. My friend said the sea just took him; he had no chance of moving against it or anything. Although there is a lot of interest in this area of water sports, I feel it is essential that beginners seek a lesson with a qualified instructor or guide to raise their own awareness of the potential dangers and avoid them.

I grew up with the Malvern Hills on my doorstep. People from Malvern are obsessed with the Hills, or the Hills are invisible to them.

I guess I fall into the former category.

O

ther than childhood holidays in the ’70s and ’80s, my first encounter with the South West Coastal Path (SWCP) was back in 1999. I’d just returned from a NATO exercise in Greece and was desperate to get away from the dust and the beige featureless landscape that had been our home for six weeks.

Just like the caller on the phone-in, I just needed to see and feel the sea air and, of course, to have a decent pint of ale, pasties for lunch and fish and chips for tea!

I had a fortnight off. I packed a rucksack with one change of clothing, a tent, a roll mat, a sleeping bag and got one of the lads to drop me at Salisbury train station.

That night I was sat overlooking St Ives Bay, Cornwall.

My tent was pitched, and I watched the warm summer sun disappear on the horizon…..and yes, I had fish and chips for tea!

Fast forward twenty-two years, and I now live in Barnstaple, Devon. I left the Army in 2012 after a full and rewarding career, and since then, I’ve been running my own fitness training company. However, the outdoors and the hills have always been my passion.

I’d completed my Mountain Leader qualification in 2004. and gained plenty of experience leading groups around the Brecon Beacons, the Mourne Mountains, Snowdonia, the Lake District, Exmoor, Dartmoor and of course, the Malvern Hills.

Somehow though, the SWCP had eluded me. Maybe it was because my perception of it was just for couples or individuals, and I’d avoided taking groups there. Either way, it was time to get back on it and exploit where I was living just a few miles from the path!

Enter ‘Peaks and Trails’. A one-stop-shop for walking enthusiasts looking for their next adventure.

They are Guided, and Self Guided walking holidays around this magnificent country of ours and, in particular, the SWCP. You should always ask yourself the same questions when choosing a walking holiday:

Where do I want to go?

Seems pretty damn obvious, doesn’t it, but this island of ours is so diverse. One day you can be freezing and feel like you’re in the Alps, stood on top of an iconic mountain in the Highlands and the next, you can be sunbathing on a Cornish beach watching surfers catching the waves.

The following 10 days, I slowly made my way north up the Cornish coast along the SWCP. I was rewarded time and time again with yet another glorious hidden cove in between the deceptively steep slopes. I bet they could tell some pirate stories.

Of course, there’s everything else in between, too, rolling hills, meandering rivers, canal towpaths, forest trails, nature reserves, moors and coastline.

Some days I walked all day and others just a few hours.

Either way, I’d make camp each night and head off to explore the local village, fill up with some well-deserved food and get my head down for the best night’s sleep ever, every night.

How am I going to get there?

Of course, it wasn’t all plain sailing, and I got drenched several times (it’s Cornwall after all), l to pop a few blisters, got sunburnt, but hey, this was my awesome mini-adventure, and nothing was going to get in my way.

I was hooked.

This time though, you’ve chosen THE COAST.

If you’re driving and heading off on a linear route along the coast, how are you getting back to your car? You could just turn around and walk back but better still, push on and get the bus back. Be sure to check the bus timetable and when the last one is.

Maybe there’s a route inland to make it a loop back to your car via the lanes or another path. Create your own adventure.

Or to be on the safe side, get your bus out to a point, then walk back.

Are you using public transport to get to the coast and then a baggage handling company?

Always carry a fully charged mobile phone and a map, both in waterproof cases. Do not rely on your mobile and GPS maps, so take a map if there is no signal.

This is a popular option for those walking larger sections of the SWCP. Walkers arrive by train and/ or bus then use a recognised company to move their overnight bag onwards whilst you only carry what you need for the day. Check your route carefully and not take on too much; the coastal path can be demanding.

What training do I need to do?

Safety.

Coastal erosion is apparent in some sections of the SWCP, predominantly South Devon and Dorset. It’s imperative to follow the coast path signs at all times and to not be tempted to steer off route. There are also various steep blowholes (collapsed sea caves), especially in Cornwall, some of which aren’t fenced off.

What kit do I need?

There are so many variants, and as Mountain Leader, I would always air on the side of caution. The weather will largely dictate what you need, so always check the forecast. Coastal weather can be unpredictable, so a waterproof jacket is always advisable. Notwithstanding the weather, you’ll definitely need a decent pair of trainers, walking shoes or boots with a good sole.

You should ALWAYS carry plenty of water and snacks for the duration and, depending on the time of year, a hat, sun cream and insect repellant.

It’s also good practice to carry a small first aid kit containing items such as plasters, tweezers, antiseptic cream and wipes, painkillers, a tick remover (and know how to use it), a bandage and safety pin and a Tubigrip for any sprains.

I’ve been a PTI in the Army and a Personal Trainer for 10 years, so I’m pretty passionate about this.

My advice is to get out walking in the kit and carrying the gear as often as possible leading up to your walk.

The coast path is anything but flat; in fact, it can be more arduous than climbing a mountain with its many steep ups and downs.

Practice using a map; coastal walking is pretty straight forward; just keep the sea on the same side!

However, it’s always good to know where you are and what’s up ahead.

“Failing to prepare is preparing to fail”.

Take it from me; if you plan your trip and follow the advice, your walking holiday will be a success, and whatever gets thrown at you will just make the adventure more memorable.

They burst with rare orchids, butterflies and bumblebees, offer homes for rare reptiles like sand lizards and provide sanctuaries for birds, insects, amphibians, and mammals.

D

unes are our most dynamic landscape, ceaselessly growing and shifting and in doing so providing niche habitats with distinctive flora and fauna.

Because of the sheer breadth of biodiversity that they can sustain, sand dunes are increasingly recognised as important habitats and awarded protection. Over 50 sand dune systems in the UK are deemed to be of national importance, and over 120 have been declared as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).

Braunton Burrows is one of the largest sand dune systems in the British Isles, situated in the estuary of the Taw and Torridge Rivers in North Devon. Privately owned by Christie’s Estate and at the heart of the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), it is a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve, and a special place where local communities and interested stakeholders work together to conserve the biodiversity and culture of the site.

These dunes got their name thanks to the rabbit population, which kept the scrub levels on the dunes low for many years. By grazing vegetation and preventing large areas of the dunes from becoming smothered by scrub, rabbits kept the dunes in excellent condition. They allowed rare dune-specialist plants and flowers to thrive; this was certainly no mean feat when you consider that Braunton Burrows flanks the 3.5-mile-long sandy beach of Saunton and covers approximately 1000 hectares.

Nestled between the high ridges of dunes are low-lying depressions known as dune slacks.

These slacks are often rich in plant life, particularly rare and local species. Braunton Burrows has a vast dune slack vegetation area, representing a significant proportion of the national resource.

When these slacks lie close or below the water table, freshwater pools often form, supporting a diversity of life. Some are seasonally flooded as the water table rises in the winter months, and others remain damp or hold permanent water year-round. Some are home to plants such as orchids which like damp conditions, while others are overgrown with scrub. The slacks are rich in species such as marsh pennywort (Hydrocotyle vulgaris), marsh helleborine (Epipactis palustris), creeping willow (Salix repens) and round-leaved wintergreen (Pyrola rotundifolia). Dune slack pools provide essential homes for birds and amphibians.

At Braunton Burrows newts, frogs and toads use the pools for breeding in and hibernating in the mud over winter. Elsewhere in the UK, the very rare natterjack toad breeds in the warm, shallow slacks on sand dunes and sandy heaths. Although the pools look inviting for swimmers, swimming in the deeper slacks and pools disturbs and even damages flora and fauna.

However, our sand dune systems and the habitats that they provide are in trouble. Over the past 100 years, many sand dunes have become overgrown with vegetation, which has stabilised much of the sand that many rare species of plant and animal are adapted to live in, and so dune biodiversity is on the decline.

Climate change, previous land management which encouraged scrub growth, air pollution, and a loss of grazing by cattle and by rabbits which were wiped out by myxomatosis have all accelerated plant growth and seen our sand dunes slowly turn into scrubland and woodland.

A combination of pressures has meant that we are left nowadays with only a small fraction of the dune slacks present a century ago and many of their flora and

fauna species are threatened. In many places, dune slacks have been destroyed over the past century by coastal developments including industry and housing, golf courses, drainage and sea defence works.

Nutrient enrichment of water reaching slacks is also a serious threat because it leads to increased plant growth of non-specialised plants, which makes it hard for dune slack specialists to compete for space.

But there is hope! Dynamic Dunescapes is a large and ambitious project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the EU LIFE Programme, which is working hard to restore 7,000 hectares of coastal sand dunes across England and Wales.

From Cornwall to Cumbria, teams from Natural England, Plantlife, National Trust, Natural Resources Wales and The Wildlife Trusts will be using pioneering conservation techniques to rejuvenate the dunes and make their shifting sands the perfect home for our threatened wildlife again. Our work in Devon involves tackling overgrown areas by creating new areas of bare sand. This will give our local threatened bare sand-loving wildlife, like sand lizards and a huge variety of plants, places where they can thrive again.

This will also mean more sand is available to move through the area and build up dune ridges. As we remove scrub to allow some of these dunes the freedom to shift naturally again, we’ll also be removing invasive plant species such as Japanese rose and sea buckthorn; these plants, which don’t usually grow at this site, can grow very quickly and outcompete native species which have always been a part of this landscape. We’ll also restore the dune slacks. By removing some of the fast-growing willow species, we can improve the slack pools which are essential for many of the dunes’ important amphibian and plant species, ensuring that our dune wildlife is protected.

These beautiful animals can be seen going about their daily routine of sunbathing, swimming and sleeping off their dinner, all while the walkers above are gazing at their chilled out charm.

These amazing creatures can be found playing off the shores of the South West, which is lucky enough to have a resident pod of 28 bottlenose dolphins.

Dolphins can show at any time of the year, but Godrevy Point, which is best known for its large Grey Seal colony in Mutton Cove, hosts fairly frequent sightings. Be sure to keep a camera with you out on the coast path.

Padstow Puffins These clumsy creatures are just so cute and special, you will be in love if you get to see them in the flesh. A small island off of the coast of Padstow, is the lucky home for a colony of these memorable birds. They can be seen during the breeding season between March and July. Guillemots a plenty The tip of North Devon provides a unique and safe home for many seabirds. Common guillemots are acutely social animals and make their homes on the high cliffs in huge colonies. They don’t build nest, but rather lay a single large egg on bare rock or on a cliff ledge. One place you can be sure to see Guillemots, is on Lundy. A short three mile trip across the water, from either Bidefor or Illfracombe.

It meanders through woodlands, hurries past rivers, and of course, saunters along shorelines. It must be a bit of a shock to the system when it gets to Plymouth, though.

Typically, Plymouth is often seen as an industrial city, known for its past steeped in voyaging vessels and its stash of military bases, but times are changing and Plymouth is embracing the wonder of its blue and green spaces.

I

n fact, it now bears the title of ‘Britain’s Ocean City’, and has hit the headlines recently when it became the first city in the UK to reintroduce beavers!

At the heart of the city’s buzz around nature is the Green Minds Project, a partnership project led by Plymouth City Council, and funded through the European Regional Development Fund’s Urban Innovative Actions. So what is Green Minds? And what are we doing? Good question!

We know that green and blue spaces are crucial for people and wildlife. Green Minds is a partnership project, looking to rewild Plymouth and its people, putting nature at the heart of its communities, businesses, and decision making. Two of the ways the project is looking to do this are: 1. Through introducing nature ‘corridors’ for wildlife.

These corridors can be trees, reefs, wildflower meadows, seagrass meadows, hedges- anywhere where wildlife can travel safely, from one habitat to another.

2. Sparking a behaviour change in the Plymouth community. By nurturing a love for, and respect of, wildlife and nature, people are more likely to protect it and find ways of helping it.

So how does this link to the SWCP? Well, the South West Coast Path is beautiful and diverse, and

Plymouth is a proud host of its stretch. The coast path in Plymouth runs alongside 3 brilliant sites for wildlife: Teats Hill, Plymouth Hoe, and Devil’s Point.

As a project, and across the Council, we’re looking at ways of linking these nature sites with other nature sites in the city - creating corridors which will let bees buzz safely from site to site, and bats flit freely from tree to tree across Plymouth. By looking at the city as a whole and joining up the green dots, we’re protecting our wildlife, and nurturing it to thrive, giving it more space and better diversity.

We also know that people protect what they love.

Green Minds is looking at innovative ways of engaging people with the natural environment, nurturing connections which are good for nature and good for people’s physical and mental health.

With these connections come a drive towards action: that could be helping to sow wildflower meadows, or picking up a piece of litter that would otherwise end up in the sea. When people feel this sense of pride and connection, magic happens. Nature comes to its rightful centre for people, communities, businesses, and decision makers.

So next time you’re passing through Plymouth on your way along the coast path, take a moment to pause and look beyond the buildings at the trees, the bees, and the butterflies. They’re part of a bigger change and it’s happening right now.

Birdwatching has really taken off during these strange times, with more and more people taking advantage of the outdoors and turning to nature to help with their mental and physical health.

A

t Cornwall Birdwatching Tours, we can't advocate this enough! Whether it's a few hours or an entire week holiday, our tours and excursions cater for everyone, and we always see birds! It's not always about seeing individual birds; sometimes, the thrill is seeing wildlife in the raw, actual bird behaviour that most people have never seen before. Simple things that the experienced birdwatcher may take for granted, like impressive flocks of Gannets, plunging arrow-like onto unsuspecting shoals of mackerel or a Peregrine circling past at head height, riding the winds along our coastal paths.

There are, of course, some spectacular birds to be encountered whilst walking coast paths. Our tours in Cornwall take in some sections of the South West Coast Path on the north and far west. Seabirds are always evident and, at certain places, can be seen at very close quarters. North Cliffs, to the north of Camborne and Hell's Mouth and Godrevy Head, are great spots for birds using the uplifting onshore winds. Fulmars, a type of petrel, nest along the cliffs here and are masters of the air, gliding effortlessly past, a photographer's dream! Offshore, Guillemots and Razorbills gather on the sea, joined if you're lucky by the odd Puffin. Binoculars are a real help with the seabirds, and we have plenty of the new Opticron Oregon 4 binoculars for our clients to use if needed. You'll need them at the ready to spot the Manx Shearwaters, Great Skuas and Kittiwakes a little further out!

We keep a lookout for nesting Shags and Cormorants on the cliffs below. These similar species both nest near one another, and it can take a keen eye and a bit of expert knowledge from one of our guides to 80

show you the subtle differences between the two.

Birds of prey can also be encountered along the cliff edges. Peregrines and Kestrels, both falcons, are seen on most tours. They certainly have different feeding behaviours. The Kestrel was traditionally known as 'The Windhover' thanks to its habit of hovering motionless in the wind, waiting patiently to drop onto its prey of small mammals and insects. The Peregrine is much more aggressive, climbing high on the onshore winds before closing in its wings and plummeting at speeds of up to 200mph onto pigeons, doves and sometimes Guillemots and Razorbills!

Members of the crow family can always be seen on our coastal walks but need a bit of scrutiny to ensure the correct identification. Jackdaws, the smallest of the group, are a regular breeder and occur in good numbers along the cliffs. Their grey hoods and silvery eye, combined with the 'jack-daw, jack-daw' call, is a giveaway to the identification. Rooks and Carrion Crows are of a similar size, but Rooks have a sharply pointed silver-grey beak, compared to the Carrion Crows all-black bill. The giant of the family is the Raven. These are as big as a Buzzard and make a low 'cronking' call as they fly overhead. Look out for the wedge-shaped tail, which indicates this bird. The one, all our clients, want to see is, of course, the Chough.

Cornwall's emblem bird only re-colonised the county again in the last few decades and is now doing really well thanks to protection and the goodwill and land management of landowners and organisations like the National Trust. During the spring and summer, breeding pairs' location is kept secret, but birds can still be seen as they forage away from nest sites. In winter, flocks of Chough can number 30 or more in fields along the South West Coastal path at places like Zennor, Nanquidno and Porthgwarra.

At Gwithian, the coastal path runs through one of our favourite tour destinations. Just west of Godrevy Head is the local nature reserve of St Gothian Sands. This was once an old sand works but since 2005 has been a Cornwall County Council managed reserve. It comprises of an open pool surrounding a large island with another reed-filled protected area, a haven for birds. The path literally splits the sanctuary areas in two, allowing for excellent viewing.

The reed beds hold the secretive Water Rail, Snipe and Reed Buntings all year round and Reed and Sedge Warblers during the summer months. A pair of Mute Swans breed every year joined as residents

by Coots, Moorhens, Tufted Ducks, Little Grebes and Shelducks. In winter, wildfowl numbers increase as visitors from the north head south for our warmer

climate. Ducks like Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, Gadwall and Pintail can be seen at relatively close quarters, and vast flocks of Canada Geese, usually three hundred or more, are often joined by tag along Greylags, White-fronted or Brent Geese. Spring sees the arrival of Sand Martins and Swallows. The former nest on the cliffs nearby. Warblers like Whitethroats, Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler can also be found either breeding in the gorse and brambles or passing through en-route to breeding grounds further north. One of the most popular birds on our tours is the humble Stonechat. Our overseas clients are astounded by the male's vibrant black, white and red breeding plumage. A stunning little bird that we often take for granted!

t is so humbling and inspiring to see an ever-growing number of altruistic individuals making time in their busy schedules to engage in activities that give back or contribute in some way for others or for the greater good. We so often get caught up in our own everydayness and routines, often forgetting there are always people that may not be so lucky as ourselves, but for most, these strange COVID-19 times have brought us back down to earth. It is evident that charities need us all now, more than ever, and I would urge all of us, in our own individual way, to find a way to step up (no pun intended). For me, this is where our South West Coast Path community comes into its own and has helped bring our Coast Path Mag to life.

Through our Path People section, we aim to bring you the lived experiences of real people through real eyes. Many of you are undertaking some fantastic feats, either personally or intending to benefit charities close to your own hearts.

When doing so, let's not forget our very own SWCPA, as I'm sure we are not alone in wanting to help ensure its upkeep and longevity for future generations. Thank you to everyone who has shared their personal stories and challenges with us to date; it's just another reminder of a magical force both you, our community of followers, and the South West Coast Path are, as a combined package. Lee's Charity Challenge Lee Rulton from Ilfracombe has been preparing to put his best boot forwards, for when he sets off to thru-hike the SW coast path in 20 days for his chosen charity. According to Lee, the PROMPT Maternity Foundations' training helped save both his wife and son's life. The charity aims to help maternity units provide the best care for mothers and babies during childbirth. This is achieved by providing effective training programmes that help maternity staff manage emergency situations. Lee has been getting some miles in on weekend training hikes, where he even managed to test out some of his camping equipment as he slept in the snow! He sets off on May 3rd 2021.

Who are Channel Events, and what is their mission?

Channel UK Events CIC is a Community Interest Company (CIC) incorporated in October 2018. A community interest company is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the industry or community. Channel Events has always been and will continue to be a not-for-profit social enterprise.

Dan Brice heads up Channel Events and is utterly passionate about every event they organise and deliver. He came to the Channel Group 5 years ago, bringing the successful Quantock Quake with him; this event is now the finale of The Triple! After a sudden personal loss, the South West Coast Path offered Hannah and her daughter a place to heal, together.

For as long as I can remember, the SWCP has played such an essential part in my life. From making my first sandcastle on Weymouth beach, way back in the 1980s with my wonderful grandfather, to the present day. It has brought comfort, solace, and a desire for exploration and adventure.

I

was lucky enough to have the most wonderful grandparents who lived in the heart of Exmoor.

My granny loved the beach, and we would spend every spare hour we could get at Woolacombe – or Putsborough. We would take the dogs and spend many hours swimming in the sea or catching waves on wooden bodyboards. It was simply idyllic.

Fast forward 20 + years, and I was living in Wiltshire and having lost my partner suddenly in a road accident, I decided it was time to move back to Devon/ Somerset with my daughter to be closer to my family.

One of the first things I did before moving back was to book us a two-night stay in the most beautiful little National Trust bothy, just opposite Hunters Inn, off Heddons mouth. For those who don’t know, a bothy is a basic shelter usually left unlocked and available for anyone to use free of charge. It was magical, and we spent the night star gazing, and in the morning, we walked the coastal path from Heddons mouth to Lynmouth. What an exhilarating experience with jawdropping cliff edges, waterfalls, and scenery to die for; this bonded us and reaffirmed that moving was indeed the right option.

After this, we booked ourselves camping for a week in Croyde and a week in Cornwall for the holidays. We 94

set ourselves the task of walking as much of the coastal path as we could and walked from Croyde to Woolacombe, reliving my beach days.

We danced and sang at the most amazing little campsite situated along the coastal path at Croyde.

I will never forget the fun we two girls had, and all my apprehensions of being a single mum vanished when I saw Mollie happily getting smashed by waves with her bodyboard with a group of friends she met at the campsite. We met some wonderful people around the campfire.

From here, we moved down to Sennon, just a short distance from Land’s End. Again, we decided to explore the coastal path as much as we could.

We walked from Lizard Point to Kynance Cove, eating at a fabulous little café in Lizard Point, then made our way in scorching heat to Kynance Cove, one of the most idyllic coves on the English coast.

Along the way, we were greeted with stunning wildflowers, endless vistas along the coastline, and the walks’ gentle gradients and moderate climbs revealed spectacular views.

We spent a glorious day exploring the wonders of St. Ives and walked along the path, climbing in and out of rock pools looking for treasure. Our holiday was cut short due to the crazy wind, but it is sketched forever in my memory.

Fast forward, and I have since met the most beautiful person. He is into surfing and shares our passion for the coastal path.

In the last 18 months, we have been fortunate enough to wake up to the sunrise in Polzeath, walk from Polzeath to Padstow to experience the culinary delights. What a walk – it is stunning!! We’ve watched some of the world’s best surfers at Boardmasters, got blown away along Hartland while watching the cascading waterfall that descends into a hidden pool (I’m sure the fairies and elves all congregate here). We have experienced the joy and wonder of Clovelly – with its crazy steep pedestrianised cobbled main street - it is a step back in time. We’ve seen the phenomenon of St.Agnes and swimming in the stunning blue sea. We have experienced the breathtaking Bedruthan Steps and indulged in the fantastic spa there.

We frequently visit Lynton & Lynmouth its known as a little Switzerland, and we love taking the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway, which has wonderful views over the bay.

One of our first walks along the coastal path was from Minehead to Porlock and North Hill. This place is a place of wonder and magic in the summer at sunset; you just can’t beat it. Bossington looking towards Porlock, offers some outstanding views, especially when the foxgloves are out and showing off with the heather. We have camped at Combe Martin and took our paddleboards along the coast, exploring secret bays and losing ourselves in the hidden coves.

Time and time again, we get drawn to the coastal path. We have recently begun exploring the Southside – the coast path from Fowey to Salcombe.

The countryside is awe-inspiring, and the views along the Jurassic coast are something else.

Salcombe has been one of my favorite places to explore, with stunning beaches and beautiful, beautiful walks. There are some great campsites all around that happily take dogs and children, and there are hours of coast path to explore either by foot or on a board – or failing that by boat – yacht seems

to be the transport of choice! Just down the road, you have Bigbury – a great little place to catch some waves!

All along the coastal path, we have discovered some of the BEST places to eat from St.Ives, Padstow, and one of my absolute favorites, the River Exe, where you are required to get a water taxi to it.

Some fantastic little beach huts appeared when we’ve least expected – offering delights like incredible fresh seafood or excellent vegan alternatives. And best of all for me, the veg stalls often offering fresh flowers and home-grown delights.

My love of the coastal path never ceases to grow.

I have spent much of lockdown looking for new places to explore either by foot or paddleboard. It lets you reconnect with simplicity and nature, but yet it takes you on the most magical journey and adventure - no corner is ever the same. I can’t wait to get out and explore more.

ABBI’S STORY

When pain hits, and your muscles seize to the point that you cannot take another step forward, would you walk the Coast Path? Abbi did!

It all started last year when I turned 30. I knew I wanted to do something to mark this milestone in my life. I knew I wanted to share it with my happy place, Cornwall.

I

came up with the idea to walk 30 miles on the SWCP in 2020. Thirty miles may not seem like much to some people, but it was a lot for me.

Even though I look well on the surface, underneath, I am far from it. When I was 20, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, a life-changing central nervous condition that primarily affects the muscles and nervous system.

There are so many symptoms that I have to cope with day by day, but overwhelmingly it is a muscular pain and chronic fatigue that affects me the most. I also struggle with numbness, IBS, and anxiety.

With the pain and the fatigue, my muscles can tire very quickly. They can seize to the point that I cannot take another step forward.

With all of these symptoms, walking long miles on rough and challenging terrain would be a challenge.

However, I have always had to be determined; to achieve anything in life.

I’d follow others on Instagram with M.E. and coping with chronic pain and managing to walk phenomenal miles, so this inspired me to think that I could achieve my goal too.

I got off to a great start in February, walking 10.5 miles in 4 days. One of those walks was the most challenging of the lot - Port Isaac to Portquin. I knew it would be challenging, but it is a stretch that I have always wanted to walk. It took me so long, and there were points of it where I thought I’d bitten off more than I could chew and was struggling.

I had my dog, Dottie, with me, and she was so in tune with how I was feeling. She knew when it was hard, and she would put her paws up at me, give me a nuzzle with her nose, or a lick on the cheek. I knew I had no choice but to keep going, and to this day, it felt like such an achievement to be able to say that I had 98 walked that part of the path.

Everything looked great, and I was on track, but then Coronavirus really hit the country, and sadly trips to Cornwall from Cambridgeshire were put on hold. It began to feel like I would never finish it. It was while furloughed, with redundancy looming up behind me, that the opportunity came available to be able to go for a 3-night visit in September with six days’ notice.

I grabbed this with open arms to resume my coastal path walking. I missed it!

I managed to catch the last few days of summer while walking in and around Harlyn Bay, Carlyon Bay, Charlestown, and around Newquay. Thankfully, I was able to come back in October for my 2-week break, which I felt so privileged to have. Altogether I walked from Port Taverns via St Ives, Land’s End, and The Lizard to Porthcurno / Pedn Vounder.

At the finish, I completed 34.5 miles on the path.

If I added duplicated miles, where I walked so far, and then retraced my steps, it was much more.

The SWCP became my good friend. It gave me a focus during one of the most challenging years of my and many others’ lives. I loved getting to see Cornwall in a new way, and it proved to me just how vital Cornwall is to my happiness and mental well-being.

I feel so inspired to keep on going and fill in the gaps.

In time, I want to walk all of the SWCP in Cornwall.

Reaching my goal has proved to me that I am stronger than I think, both physically and mentally.

With each walk, I was more positive and confident in my abilities and how far I could go, and what terrain I could handle.

All I can say is thank you to the Cornwall coast path for all it has done for me.

belle’S STORY

My grandad, Brian Carter, was a famous naturalist, writer, poet and artist.

'm Belle Carter, and I'm 31 from Torquay South Devon, born and bred! I own The Cactus Kitchen, a vegan / veggie food business specialising in Torbay delivery. My grandad, Brian Carter, was a famous naturalist, writer, poet and artist.

From a young age, he was my inspiration. From the environment, the creatures within the bushes, up in the sky and everything in between. He was so passionate about South West Devon; he lived and breathed it so, so did I. I would go on endless walks with him, the coast paths and countryside he loved the most.

In his life, he did many things, but fighting to save the lands from being built on is something I remember quite vividly from his stories & articles I later read.

He fought against the River Teign diverting at Teign grace, where a ball clay company wanted to move the river. Worried about the village's flooding, he found exceptional engineers & lawyers to fight this case and eventually got it thrown out. I remember another when he saved Westerland Valley from motorway construction; his passion pushed on to make sure the natural habitats & orchards would not spoil just because of a money spin. He wore an iconic T-shirt in a press photo all those years back which said: "keep the valley green". It's always stuck with me.

Growing up around him made my outlook on life very different from other kids. I knew from a young age that I wanted to explore and had a wealth of knowledge about different birds, sea creatures, and the plants and flowers that grew along the coast paths' edges.

We used to rescue birds all the time, seagulls, pigeons, sparrows, blackbirds, mice - you name it, we had it flying or lying around my nan's conservatory, resting up and getting back to health. I honestly believe this made me so conscious and deeply invested in animal welfare, which I am and always will be.

I have always wanted to work with food my whole life, but I knew that when I had the chance (and the

money!) I wanted to own a business that I believed in, cared about and would always be proud of, so it had to be vegetarian & vegan food. Not to mention I find working predominantly with the food from the ground, especially locally within south Devon, absolutely fascinating; this way of cooking knows no bounds and has me hooked on its variety!

I have now incorporated "Keep The Valley Green" within the Cactus Kitchen ethos, as eating green will, of course, help reduce your carbon footprint on the planet, but also, without him, there would be no Cactus Kitchen. Our organic cotton T-shirt's will be available to buy from us, with 10% of all profits going towards the South West Coast Path Association, who I know will put this money to good use with the fantastic things they are already doing. I aim to have people from all walks of life wearing this slogan, encouraging people to Keep The Valley Green!!!

Our packaging is 100% recyclable and or compostable\ biodegradable.
