Welcome to our fourth edition, Spring has well and truly sprung, and the path already seems busier than ever. It’s inspiring to see, follow and re-live the experiences of the coast path through other people’s walks, runs, day trips and challenges; however, we must remember the high cost of maintaining the trail, especially after some of this winter’s storms. We urge you all to reflect on whether you are ‘taking’ or ‘giving’ towards the coast path and maybe consider contributing to the association in some small way to maintain the balance. This magazine is our small way of sharing the love of the path and all it encompasses, with the ambitious aim that as our readership grows, so does the percentage we can then pledge back to the SW Coast Path Association via our 1% for the Planet membership. Born from a genuine love of the path and everything it offers, with a drive to give back to help its longevity. If you share our values and mission, please help us by purchasing a digital copy of the magazine online, promoting or advertising within the magazine, or providing articles or content.

You may want to become a member of the South West Coast Path Association or consider volunteering or offering your expertise if local to the path. Between us coast path lovers and users, we have the power to make lasting change and let’s encourage everyone that loves or uses the path to do their bit.

hristian Coan, a photographer from SouthEast England has been named the South West Coast Path Photographer of the Year 2021 for a beautiful image of Godrevy Lighthouse captured through a natural rock frame with rockpools reflecting the pink hue of dusk in West Cornwall.

The winning photograph, taken from the beach, beat tough competition from over 1,200 entries across the south west region.

Judging the competition was critically acclaimed seascape photographer Rachael Talibart. On the winning photo Rachael said: “This was actually a very easy choice - it is clearly the most interesting and well handled photograph.

It fits the brief of finding a 'different viewpoint’.

Technically, the photo is well-achieved, and the processing is carefully handled so that it doesn’t detract from the impression of the image overall.

This image rewards a lingering gaze - the composition draws my eyes to Godrevy lighthouse in the distance but then, after appreciating that, my eyes can get lost in all the wonderful detail of the rocks and pool in the foreground.”

Christian Coan recounts how he captured the shot, “I have visited Godrevy every year for the last 18 years, and I had several areas I knew I wanted to explore with the camera. Having checked the tide times and the weather and arriving on location pre blue hour, I had plenty of time to wander the beach to find the best position. The composition for the winning photograph, in all honesty, was a lucky spot. The little rock pool leading to the lighthouse was tucked away in a network of paths carved by the incoming tides and happened to catch my eye as I wandered through them.

The conditions were perfect with a pinkish hue lighting the sky and reflecting in the rock pool below."

The competition, organised by the South West Coast Path Association, for the second year in a row, presented a special Climate Crisis Capture Award for the photo that best communicated important issues that are threatening the Coast Path such as; coastal erosion, pollution, rising sea levels, loss of biodiversity, loss of habitats and extreme weather.

The photograph highlights an approach to photography in telling the story of how the landscape is being altered by climate change. An image that is not only a technically very accomplished image but highlights how the force of nature, with sea levels rising and storms being more destructive, can take a bite out of the land and footpaths we know and love.

As outdoor events in 2022 return to pre-pandemic levels, the South West Coast Path Association encourages event and tour operators to make their activity Coast Path Friendly.

We all love walking and running the South West Coast Path, and events and tours help make experiencing the freedom and beauty of our Path easy and fun for people of all ages and backgrounds.

However – they do impact the Trail.

By signing up to be Coast Path Friendly, event and tour operators are giving back to the Path that they depend on – to help secure a sustainable future for both the National Trail and their activities.

Increasing public interest in conservation and a growing belief that we all have a role to play in caring for our beautiful places mean that being part of an initiative like this is a powerful promotional message for event organisers that should increase uptake.

Every organisation carrying the Coast Path Friendly badge agrees to contribute £1 per participant to the South West Coast Path Association to help ensure a sustainable future for both the Trail and their activity. The scheme is part of a wider campaign

by England’s National Trails collectively to encourage those that profit from them to give back on a per-user basis and protect these unique and environmentally important corridors. We hope that participants will actively look for the Coast Path Friendly badge when choosing which activities to sign up for. >

In 2019, £3,400 was raised from Coast Path Friendly Events and Tours which were allocated to maintenance projects. Due to lockdown and social restrictions, many events were cancelled or postponed in 2020 and 2021. It is hoped that as 2022 events are set to go ahead, the Coast Path Friendly campaign pot will grow and go some way towards neutralising the effects of mass partnership events on the Coast Path, particularly in the wet winter months. Money raised could fund works including step refurbishment, surfacing repairs and new drainage ditches.

Thank you to Coast Path Friendly event and tour operators Coast Path Friendly operators all run activities on the Trail and recognise their responsibility to contribute to its upkeep for future generations. Please support organisations that carry the Coast Path Friendly badge where you can. "I wanted to help raise awareness and funds for this great cause through two events which have the Coast Path at their heart. I am lucky enough to live within a stone's throw of the Path near Hope Cove - it is a haven for the whole family. Anyone who loves the outdoors is a custodian of these routes. Without custodians to maintain the Coast Path, it would soon become another unloved landmark, inaccessible to recreational users, especially in the age of austerity and council cutbacks.

AM Coastal Exmoor is a vast area of moorland, with steep, wooded valleys and rugged coastal terrain which enjoys National Park status. A good place to base yourself for a visit is Porlock Weir, with a wide choice of hotels and guest houses. From here, head uphill to the start of the 7.3-mile (11.7km) Robbers Bridge trail. This route links several tree-lined ‘combes’ which cut through England’s highest coastal hills. It’s little wonder that the area has inspired so many artists and writers. The most famous of which is poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who wrote his epic poem, Kubla Khan, while staying at Ash Farm, which can be seen on the trail. As a walking enthusiast, Coleridge was known to tramp for miles across the region and his legacy lingers with the Coleridge Way - a long distance footpath across Exmoor and the Quantock Hills.

PM Return to the pretty seaside village of Porlock Weir and enjoy a take-out lunch on the quayside. Allow some time to soak up the atmosphere of the place as you immerse yourself in the beauty of the dramatic coastal scenery. For dinner, head to one of the village pubs or restaurants where you can sample the local delicacy - Porlock Bay Oysters. These oysters, which are freshly harvested from the bay, are considered among the best in the world.

AM Travel along the coast to Lynton to explore one of the jewels of coastal Exmoor - the 2.7-mile (4.3km) Lynton and the Valley of the Rocks walk. Head out of Lynton on foot and you soon reach an area of the coast dominated by craggy outcrops and rock towers that form a ‘dry’ valley with the neighbouring moors. Continue through this valley, passing the Ragged Jack and Castle Rock formations. Test your head for heights by climbing to the top for far-reaching views along the coast, before returning to Lynton.

Hop on the historic Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway - a water-powered funicular railway that travels up and down the steep track between the twin villages. The picturesque harbour village of Lynmouth is a great spot to enjoy some tasty fish and chips. After lunch, walk back uphill or take the cliff railway to Lynton where there are many hotels or guest houses in this popular holiday destination.

AM The next morning travel to Combe Martin (25 minutes by car). From here you can join the 4.7-mile (7.5 km) Hangman Hills walk - for a classic coastal Exmoor hike up Little Hangman and Great Hangman, which, at 244 metres (800 feet), is the tallest sea cliff in England and Wales. Take a few minutes to catch your breath and admire the spectacular scenery, then continue the loop back to Combe Martin.

PM Exmoor is a prime destination for outdoor activities. If you have time, try the rock-hopping adventure of coasteering. Alternatively join a red deer safari to view the majestic red deer, as well as birds of prey, foxes and moorland ponies. Return to Combe Martin for dinner at one of the many pubs and restaurants, before hitting the sack for a well-earned rest.

Local Knowledge Accommodation: There’s a great choice of hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfasts in or near the key tourism destinations along the coast. Minehead, Porlock Weir, Lynton Lynmouth and Combe Martin make ideal bases for Exmoor exploration.

Food & drink: Porlock Oysters, freshly caught trout and venison are just some of the delicacies you can sample while in Exmoor. Fish and chips remain a popular seaside treat, as does Devonshire cream tea which can be enjoyed at countless venues along the coast. Beer drinkers should try the excellent Exmoor Ales.

Transport: Getting to and from walks, villages and local attractions will be difficult and timeconsuming without a car. There are limited bus services here, however it is possible to pre-book a lift with local taxi services. Returning to the Coast Path, ignore the small paths heading inland to continue above Smith's Cliff to where the Coast Path turns right and appears to be heading inland.

As the Coast Path turns left again in front of the fields, take the path carrying straight on ahead, heading inland towards Bossiney. Follow the green lane and then the tarmac lane to the main Bossiney Road.

Immediately in front of you as you reach the road, the mound topped by a Scots pine, to the right of the Methodist chapel, is Bossiney Mound.

Arthurian legends claim that Arthur's round table lies beneath the mound; and one midsummer night, when Arthur and his knights are due to make their comeback, the table will rise out of the mound for their use.

It is thought that this too was the site of a Romano British settlement. As at Tintagel Castle, the Normans later built a castle on the early site, (a motte and bailey in this case), and it is these remains that are visible today.

North Devon has become the 12th location from around the globe to be selected as a World Surfing Reserve, an international designation that recognises and celebrates the area’s outstanding quality surfing beaches and brings together the local community and experts in actions to protect them.

he area has been recognised not only for its high quality and diversity of surf breaks, but also for the unique natural beauty of its surroundings, its deep-rooted and historic surf culture, and its importance to the wider community.

North Devon joins an exclusive list of World Surfing Reserves that includes Malibu and Santa Cruz in California, Ericeira in Portugal, the Gold Coast, Manly and Noosa in Australia, Punta de Lobos in Chile, Huanchaco in Peru, Guarda do Embau in Brazil, and Bahia de Todos Santos in Mexico.

Adam Hall, a local surfer and co-founder of the Surfing Reserve in North Devon, says: “Our core focus is looking after the quality of the waves themselves and preserving the ecosystems that produce them. Surf spots need to be celebrated, recognised and protected in the same way we protect and recognise beautiful national parks like Exmoor.”

The World Surfing Reserves (WSR) program was launched in 2009 by California-based Save the Waves Coalition, an international non-governmental organisation dedicated to protecting surf ecosystems around the globe. This pioneering model has met with proven success.

“We are delighted to welcome North Devon as a World Surfing Reserve alongside other iconic protected surfing locations around the world. We hope this designation helps give a greater voice to surfers in decisions that will impact the beautiful coastline in North Devon and protect such a diverse range of waves”. > wh Each Reserve establishes a Local Stewardship Council to design a plan of action - "Stewardship Plan" - which aims to improve the conservation of the coastline and waves. includes local organisations such as the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), environmental groups like Surfers Against Sewage, local community groups, surf clubs, local beach businesses and landowners, all coming together to work towards agreed goals and shared ideals. For the first time the local surfing and beach-going communities will have a voice in decision-making processes that affect the North Devon coastline.

The group is informed by scientific research and includes coastal experts from the University of Plymouth, including Dr Christopher Stokes who says: “Myself and the whole team at University of Plymouth are extremely proud to be part of the UK’s first World Surfing Reserve. It represents a real opportunity to celebrate the unique waves and surfing environment in North Devon, and importantly, to introduce measures that will protect our precious surf breaks using scientific research to help us identify threats to wave and water quality, as well as enhance the abundant natural capital of the region”

The aim is to protect waves and the surfing experience from threats such as harmful coastal development, water quality and pollution, limited coastal access, the impacts of climate change, and a host of other factors that directly or indirectly impact the delicate ecosystems on which waves of quality depend.

The North Devon World Surfing Reserve covers a world-class surf zone stretching across approximately 30 km of coastline. Its high density of outstanding surf, at iconic breaks such as Croyde, Saunton, Woolacombe, and Lynmouth, caters to wave-riders from beginner to expert and a variety of surfing styles. Here can be found gentle peeling waves on vast sandy beaches; fast and powerful peaks best suited to a dynamic, high-performance approach; and long and tapering walls that invite creative lines and end in tired legs. >

The Reserve is the first of its kind in the UK, and only the second in Europe. It is also the first ever cold water World Surfing Reserve, with many of the best waves arriving in the winter season.

It’s the organisers’ intention that the successful implementation of this model in North Devon could be replicated by other coastal areas of the UK to protect their own waves and beaches, and ultimately to achieve a Surfing Reserve status too.

On the Surfing Reserve’s organising committee is Yvette Curtis, who founded the Wave Wahines surf and fitness club, which provides affordable and accessible surf training to women and girls. Always seeking to open up the conversation and break down barriers to entry, Curtis stresses the wide reach of the program’s many potential benefits:

North Devon is a well-established hub of surf culture, home to the Museum of British Surfing, the sport’s national governing body Surfing England, and to brands such as Dry Robe and Tiki, all located in Braunton within easy access of the best beaches. A study in 2008 estimated that surfing brought in over £50 million to the area every year, and sustained around 1500 jobs.

Kevin “Cookie” Cook has been surfing in North Devon for more than 50 years, having made his first surfboard in 1968 while still at school. It was Cookie who first proposed applying the Surfing Reserve concept to North Devon: “It is so important to celebrate the amazing, special and unique surfing environment of North Devon in a way that will protect it and ensure future generations are able to experience the magic and beauty of being at one with the ocean.”

The North Devon community relies on a thriving and functioning surf ecosystem for a wide range of healthy and productive activities, Rob Whitney a local teacher who has been involved in the Reserves development for numerous years understands the importance of this very ecosystem to the local and visiting youth “We have a wealth of expertise and experience within our Local Stewardship Council, but it is also our responsibility to educate future generations and inspire them to protect what makes this area special and unique, whilst demonstrating that everyday people can make a difference”

Ben Hewitt, a local surfer and former chair of the campaign group Surfers Against Sewage, has been helping the Reserve to develop its Stewardship Plan and establish a framework for safeguarding these miracles of nature against unilateral or short-sighted interventions. He says:

“There are too many cases around the world when a decision to dredge a sandbar or build a coastal development has destroyed a perfect wave forever or ruined the surfing experience.

In preparing the Reserve we have worked with coastal scientists to understand why the different types of waves break the way they do and what factors need to be taken into account when protecting this unique coastline. ” www.northdevonsurfreserve.org

Coast path stardust 10 best places to stargaze along the South West Coast Path

e all know that connecting with nature, getting outdoors and trying a new hobby are all great ways to boost our mental and physical health. But could the night’s sky hold the key to feeling good?

Stargazing is free, fun for all ages and a great way to engage with the natural world. All you need is a dark, clear night and a rural site, away from towns and villages, so it’s free of light pollution – somewhere just like the South West Coast Path.

There is another reason the South West is fantastic for stargazing: its abundance of Dark Sky Discovery Sites. These are sites that have been awarded a special status due to being accessible and free from light pollution, so much so that the Milky Way is visible. Robert Beeman from the Cornwall Astronomy Society agrees.

“The South West has many Dark Sky Discovery Sites, for example, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Bodmin Moor and West Penwith,” he says. “The area is ideal for stargazing; wherever you are staying, you won’t be far from one.”

Once you’ve chosen your stargazing site, the next step is navigating the night’s sky, and with 100

thousand million stars in the Milky Way alone, that’s no mean feat.

The astronomer Ptolemy arranged some of these stars into constellations as early as 150 AD, many of which are still visible today. There are around 88 officially recognised constellations, but some are easier to identify than others – so we asked Robert for the best ones to spot in the South West.

“Ursa Major, or the Plough, looks like a saucepan high overhead,” he advises. “Cassiopeia is a W-shaped constellation to the north and Cygnus, the Swan, is in the north east. Bootes is a kite-shaped constellation in the south, and Leo the Lion is in the south west. All of these are visible around midnight in May.

“Then, of course, there is the moon, and you may get lucky and see the odd meteor trail too.”

County Gate, Devon Exmoor National Park, spanning Somerset and Devon, is Europe’s first Dark Sky Reserve, offering some of the best conditions to spot the flickering firmament above. In particular, County Gate is a fantastic location for stargazing; a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site that straddles the Somerset/Devon border, this car park provides easy access to some of the darkest skies in the continent, only a few miles from the South West Coast Path.

Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps, Cornwall Following the coast path down into Cornwall, Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps is the county’s first Dark Sky Discovery Site you’ll come to. This stunning clifftop site was first awarded its Dark Sky status in 2014 and is a stone’s throw from the South West Coast Path. The sight of the sparkling sky above and the sound of crashing waves below is an experience not to be missed on your Coast Path trip.

Holdstone Down, Devon Another of Devon’s dazzling Dark Sky Discovery Sites, and mere metres from the South West Coast Path, Holdstone Down is, by day, a rugged wilderness of flowering gorse and delicate heather. But by night, this special spot offers panoramic views of the heavens above. Not only that, but it’s a prime UFO spotting site too, so stars are not the only celestial bodies you could be encountering on your visit!

Norman Lockyer Observatory, Devon The Milky Way can be seen by the naked eye at all our recommended stargazing spots, but if you really want to delve into the depths of the heavens then you’ll need more than a pair of binoculars. The Norman Lockyer Observatory, on the Sidmouth coast, regularly holds open evenings where you can enjoy a spot of celestial travel with the help of their telescopes, and learn more about astrophysics too.

Trinity Hill Nature Reserve, Devon Trinity Hill Nature Reserve is another of Devon’s Dark Sky Discovery Sites, this time close to the spectacular South Coast.

At around 4 miles inland, it’s not directly accessible from the South West Coast Path, but well worth a visit anyway; the nature reserve was awarded its Dark Sky status in 2015 and is one of the best places on the South Coast to enjoy the unspoilt, star-speckled skies above. Keep your ears pricked for the hoots of owls and chirps of bats while you’re there too.

Durdle Door, Dorset The iconic stone arch of Durdle Door is a perennial visitor’s favourite, whether you’re striding out the South West Coast Path or sunning yourself on the beach. But this Jurassic Coast hotspot is becoming increasingly popular with astro tourists too.

And, offering awe-inspiring views of the stars twinkling above both the shimmering sea and the famous rock formation, it’s easy to see why.

St Catherine’s Chapel, Dorset Perched on a Dorset hilltop and offering views across Chesil Beach and out to the Isle of Portland, there are few more atmospheric places to stargaze than this 14th-century chapel on the Jurassic Coast. While it’s not a Dark Sky Discovery Site, the relatively low light pollution and elevated position of this chapel mean that it’s still a great location for spotting stars close to the Coast Path.

Stargazing checklist Many constellations and the Milky Way can be seen by the naked eye at these Dark Sky sites, however, there are a few things you might want to take along to help you enjoy your astronomical adventure. Here’s what Robert recommends packing in your stargazing kit: • Binoculars – while these aren’t strictly necessary, a good pair of binoculars will allow you to see planets – such as Saturn and Jupiter – as well as the Andromeda Galaxy and the Moon more clearly.

• Warm clothes and a flask of hot drink – it can get pretty chilly at night, especially close to the coast and with a clear night’s sky, and it’s especially important to have a warm head and hands.

• A head torch with a red light – this preserves night vision, helping you to spot the stars more easily.

• A stargazing app – many constellations are easy to identify, but to help you distinguish which twinkling star you’re gazing up at, stargazing apps such as Star Walk can be very helpful. You can also download free star charts online.

he Etches Collection – Museum of Jurassic Marine Life, situated in the idyllic village of Kimmeridge on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is part of a natural story of wonder, where 152-157 million years ago the land where the museum now sits was a tropical paradise and the seas were inhabited by the living creatures that now form the fossils that are part of the stories from deep time here at our museum today. We strive to continue the development of the story through exhibits that help to bring to life those creatures. We are an internationally recognized museum with both Accredited and Designated Collection prestigious status awards.

Our mission is to guide all generations to study, explore, gaze at in wonder and shape the world in which we live by introducing future generations of palaeontologists, earth scientists, enthusiasts and children of all ages and abilities to the prehistoric makeup of our planet. The museum sits as a beacon on the World Heritage Site of Dorset Jurassic Coast, and the building itself is a purpose built, state of the art, eco-friendly facility. It is a place to be inspired, to come together for collaboration, community, and creativity.

What’s new at the museum…

Brand new for 2022, we have created a display of rare and previously unseen fish specimens. This is the first time these amazing fossils have been revealed to the public and includes five fish all discovered by Dr Steve Etches MBE. The display represents several new un-designated species currently not found in any other museum in the UK or internationally.

Specimens k1563, k1921, k1943, k2183, k2535 were found in the respective years 2001, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2020 and resided in Steve’s garage as part of his private fossil collection until The Etches Collection Museum was built in 2016. Since the build these specimens have been in the reserve collection awaiting scientific study away from public view. Now, for the first time, after several years of being locked away these incredible fossils can now be seen by our visitors, their prehistoric stories shedding new light on these ancient creatures. >

Steve commented “The key thing for me was getting these fish on display, they are extraordinarily rare and incredibly detailed, it was always a shame to have them hidden away in the reserve collection. Now visitors can appreciate them as much as I do.” All of the specimens are yet to undergo scientific study, but the hope is always, that this will soon happen.

We are not just a static museum, if the pandemic taught us anything, it was to go digital. That can be a painstaking process but getting the right formula and balance between being educational and informational along with viewer interaction is key. Social media is somewhat of an artform and each platform has its little idiosyncrasies. Our Digital Media Specialist, Ash Hall was hired in January of 2021 to lead all our efforts to quickly bring together material and an editorial calendar that would be beneficial to our visitors. The museum has utilised two social platforms consistently during lockdown, those were Facebook and YouTube. Facebook was utilised predominantly for interaction and information sharing, it also helped to spearhead our fundraising campaign at the height of the pandemic and during the first national lockdown.

With consistent branding and themed subject matter our YouTube channel has grown from strength to strength over the past year. We strongly encourage all our visitors, even now, to subscribe to our YouTube channel, not only to get a glimpse of behind-thescenes footage, but viewers get to go virtual fossil hunting with Dr. Steve Etches, MBE. These series have grown very successful and are now part of the weekly features of the channel. We have also recently launched The Etches Collection Digital Subscription (Etches Online). Subscribers pay a nominal monthly fee to have exclusive virtual access to our amazing museum from wherever you are in the world, from the comfort of your home or on the go.

Education is intrinsic to our core values here at The Etches Collection. Our commitment to providing support to students and teachers in all aspects of their learning. We want to do this in a way that encourages learners to develop an interest in the world around them. To this end we are rejuvenating our educational programs, with a focus on delivering a fun, engaging and interactive educational experience for school groups as part of their visit to the museum. In the autumn of 2021, the Curriculum Development and Education Outreach Project was launched, centred around the redevelopment of our educational platform. It basically complements visits to the museum and tours of the gallery with

presentations to enhance students’ understanding of the natural world and sciences. Our new approach makes our programmes current for educational relevance to the National Curriculum whilst increasing focus on teacher support. s Ocean optimists, the Ocean Conservation Trust know that people who experience and connect with the Ocean are more likely to love it and want to protect it. They have a passionate team of Ocean Discovery Rangers who run an exciting programme of Ocean experiences to allow people to connect with the Ocean, by getting them in, on and next to the Ocean.

The Ocean Conservation Trust believes everyone should be given a chance to experience the wonder of the Ocean, no matter what their age or where they live. Their ‘Ocean for All’ programme sees the Ocean Discovery Rangers working with people from all walks of life, giving them an immersive Ocean experience, with the help of innovative VR technology. Residents in care homes, hospitals and sheltered accommodation across the country have benefited from this fantastic project.

They also run an award-winning Ocean Squad programme, which has been designed to give teenagers a meaningful connection to the Ocean via fun experiences, inspirational learning, and exciting adventures. From behind-the-scenes tours of their Aquarium, to snorkelling and rock pooling, to sustainable fish cookery lessons, there’s something to engage everyone.

Their free weekly beach explorer sessions are great for families to explore rockpools, play beach games and tidy up the local coast, or you can jump onto one of the boat trips and set sail into Plymouth’s stunning natural harbour, whilst learning about its history and discovering British wildlife. Both are great ways to connect all your family to nature and our wonderful Ocean.

If you want to completely immerse yourself in the Ocean and explore what lies beneath the waves of Plymouth Sound, then the snorkel safaris are for you!

Led by fully qualified BSAC Snorkel Instructors, even those who have never tried snorkelling before can take part. For those that want to stay dry whilst doing their bit for the Ocean, you can join them for an Ocean clean-up, taking place every Friday throughout 2022, they are working to clean up Plymouth’s waterfront through litter picks. This is also part of an international citizen science research project, Preventing Plastic Pollution!

Seagrass update

England’s largest seagrass restoration effort continues

In 2021, as part of the EU LIFE Funded ReMEDIES project, hundreds of thousands of seagrass seeds were packed into bags to be planted into Plymouth Sound by the Ocean Conservation Trust. So far in the project 1.5 hectares of seagrass seeds have been planted, but in total over 8 football pitches worth of seagrass will be planted into the seabed throughout the South Coast.

The seagrass seeds were collected by the Ocean Conservation Trust and their volunteer divers. Seed harvesting was carried out in a sustainable way, by only taking seed from one part of the plant. By doing this, the healthy roots and leaves were left in place to continue producing and dispersing seed in the future.

The seeds have been looked after at the National Marine Aquarium’s special seagrass laboratory.

This Spring, the Ocean Conservation Trust will be leading on the next stage of planting, with another hectare being planted in Plymouth Sound, and a hectare in the Solent Maritime Special Area of Conservation. A whopping 20,000 bags will be packed for each area, by hundreds of fantastic volunteers.

Mark Parry, Development Officer at the Ocean Conservation Trust, said: “After the success of our previous planting effort, we are excited to be getting underway again. These events take a lot of hard work, planning and preparation, and wouldn’t be successful without the help of our community. We are so proud of how many volunteers are willing to dedicate their time to help restore such an important habitat.”

This work is vitally important as seagrass is one of the most valuable ecosystems on our planet. They are nurseries for our commercial fish species, provide a safe habitat for rare and endangered species, and protect our coasts from erosion. Most importantly, they are excellent carbon stores and can absorb carbon 35 times faster than a rainforest of the same area.

Despite this, seagrass is the fastest disappearing habitat on the planet. Since the 1930s, it is estimated that 90% of Zostera marina seagrass beds have been lost, and it is thought to still be declining at a rate of 7% a year globally.

Saving Studland’s seahorses The sheltered waters and sandy miles of iconic South West Coast Path site Studland Bay are well-known to boaters and beach lovers near and far. Yet, beneath those blue waters lies an even more remarkable and often overlooked world.

t is the same sheltered nature which makes Studland Bay such a perennially popular spot for recreational boating that also provides the ideal environment for one of our most important marine habitats to flourish.

Seagrass meadows carpet the seabed, their dense leaves intertwining to make home to a vast array of marine life. These flowering plants with bright green leaves can be found in shallow waters all around the world, with a single hectare able to support up to 80,000 fish and millions more crustaceans and molluscs. Alongside pipefish, cuttlefish, jellyfish, dancing between the ribbon-like leaves, most notably, a species many do not even know can be found here in the UK: the seahorse.

Britain in fact has two native seahorse species. It is the spiny seahorse, recognizable by its fleshy spikes lining its neck and back, known to set up territories and breed at Studland Bay. It is the most important site for them in the UK, if not all of Europe. The shortsnouted seahorse, Britain’s other native species and most recently found in the River Thames, though not a permanent resident at Studland Bay, can often be found drifting through in search of a suitable habitat.

In addition to providing vital shelter and habitat for some of our best-loved marine species, seagrasses are also a key ally in the fight against climate change.

A single hectare of seagrass can produce 100,000 litres of oxygen per day and absorb thirty-five times more carbon dioxide than a pristine hectare of Amazon rainforest, playing a major role in keeping climate change in check.

Yet, just like the Amazon rainforest, these incredible habitats are under enormous pressure. The world loses an area of seagrass around the size of two football pitches every hour: protecting what is left is critical In 2019, Studland Bay was designated as a Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). This designation was made specifically because of Studland’s seagrass beds and the habitat and breeding ground they provide for the spiny seahorse, which is a protected species in the UK. However, like so many of these habitats around the world, Studland’s seagrass beds still face persistent and existential threats despite their designation as a protected area.

Unfortunately, a major threat to this precious habitat

is some of the very boaters drawn to Studland for its stunning marine environment, their anchors tearing through the seabed beneath the waves, with little regard for the incredible and fragile world residing there.

The dropping of anchors is particularly damaging to seagrass beds. Harm is caused both as a direct result of the anchor embedding in the seabed but also indirectly as the dragging of anchors and scouring by the anchor chain when tides rise and fall, or by changing winds, which can uproot or otherwise degrade seagrasses.

During the first coronavirus lockdown of spring 2020, with fewer boats and people using Studland Bay, there was an extraordinary resurgence in seahorse numbers at Studland Bay with a Seahorse Trust dive team spotting 46 spiny seahorses across just three dives, including a pregnant male.

These were the highest numbers we had seen in a single dive since we began studying the area in 2008.

It provided yet another timely reminder of the urgent need for Studland’s protected area designation to be reinforced with practical management solutions so boaters can continue enjoying the site without any unintended damage.

This paved the way for an exciting new partnership between The Seahorse Trust, the marine conservation charity which I founded and run, and boatfolk, a forward-thinking boating business with 11 marinas around the UK coastline, all of which aim to place sustainability at the heart of what they do.

The Seahorse Trust and boatfolk joined forces last year to deliver a practical solution to save Studland’s seagrasses, to the benefit of both people and nature, using just one simple piece of kit: the eco-mooring.

Eco-moorings were designed as an alternative to traditional mooring systems, to limit contact with the seabed and therefore avoid causing damage to seabed habitats such as seagrasses.

Installing an eco-mooring involves driving a helical screw anchor into the seabed and attaching an elastic rode which connects the anchor system with the mooring buoy. This provides a simple, hassle-free option for boaters, avoiding the need for them to drop their own anchors. With a stretchy elastic rode able to contract and expand at high and low tide, the seagrass remains protected from scouring anchors. >

The Seahorse Trust and boatfolk formed a not-forprofit partnership and in July 2021, having secured approval from the Marine Management Organisation, and we dived once again into Studland’s waters, this time to install an initial ten eco-moorings. The eco-moorings have been hugely popular so far. It has given boaters an attractive and environmentally friendly alternative to dropping their anchors, and finally starting to give the bay the protection it deserves, safeguarding the seagrass beds, the carbon they store, and the seahorses and other creatures that make their homes amongst the reeds.

Following the success of that initial installation, which was bolstered by statements of support from renowned conservationists including Chris Packham and Steve Backshall, as well as financial backing from celebrated local chef Mitch Tonks and his Rockfish restaurants, The Seahorse Trust and boatfolk continue to work together to deliver a better future f or a Studland Bay where people and nature exist in harmony.

By making small changes now, we can all help to ensure that our precious coastline remains a place that can be enjoyed by generations to come, while continuing to provide a haven for threatened marine life.

We are hugely grateful to have the funds available to install a further ten eco-moorings, subject to the relevant permissions, thanks to the generosity of a number of individuals, charities and businesses.

We are now also working with a wider group of stakeholders to plan a strategic larger-scale rollout of sustainable ecomoorings along the coastline.

he sheep and horses that call this place home are iconic, and as much a feature of the landscape as the remarkable natural pebble ridge that extends along the seaward edge of the park for over 2 miles. As common land there are also rights of access for pedestrians across the 254-hectare site, making it a perfect place to explore the rich heritage and valuable natural habitats found here.

Smaller than its bigger brother across the Taw/ Torridge estuary mouth at Braunton Burrows, the Country Park at Northam Burrows is more accessible and has plenty to discover. Both sites are wildlife havens and home to some of the country’s rarest flora. The broken shells that make up the dunes here created calcareous soil conditions, which are different to the typical acidic loams and clays that are found elsewhere in North Devon. This supports a unique community of plants that are not normally found in South West England. There are 4 species of orchids found on Northam Burrows, including the minute and delicate autumn lady’s tresses, which are found on areas of close-cropped turf, with white flowers growing in a spiral up the plant’s stem. Dune pansies are an unusual sub-species of wild pansy and brighten the fore dunes with colour. Meanwhile, further inland, wild chamomile forms a sweet-smelling carpet during the summer months. Rarest of all is a tiny plant called water germander. Although it is inconspicuous, this species of dead nettle is only found at 2 other sites in England!

Northam Burrows is also famous for its bird life.

The open grassland is not subject to intensive management like other agricultural land, and this makes it a perfect breeding site for many ground nesting species. Sky larks are a particularly common sight throughout the spring, as they soar above their nests singing a distinctive warbling song. Meanwhile, wheatears arrive here following a winter spent in warmer climes and take advantage of crevices in the pebble ridge, as well as abandoned rabbit burrows, to build nests and rear their chicks. On the eastern side of the site there is a salt marsh known locally as the Skern. The mudflats here are rich in invertebrates and wading birds gather on them to feed. Long legs and beaks help them to wade through the shallow water and prod the surface in search of their latest meal.

uncovering all sorts of tasty treats. During the winter the population of this marsh increases and become more diverse as winter migrants from the artic come in search of shelter. This is the best time of year for birdwatching, particularly during high tides when all the birds are carolled into a small area of marsh on the upper shore, making it easy to spot different species with even a modest pair of binoculars. >

Facing the Bristol Channel, with the great Atlantic Ocean just beyond, Northam Burrows is situated at the point the sea meets the rivers Taw and Torridge.

This location has exposed Northam Burrows to powerful natural processes that are constantly changing a landscape which seems to alter every time you visit. Northam Burrows was created some time after the last ice age 10,000 years ago. As the giant continental ice sheets began to melt across the world, water flooded into Bideford Bay and a vast sediment trap was created at the mouth of the estuary helping to form the dunes here. The pebble ridge is believed to be only a few hundred years old and has been created by a process known as longshore drift.

Landslides from the cliffs to the west produce rubble, which has been broken up and worn down by the sea to create smooth pebbles. Slowly but surely waves, driven by the prevailing south westerly winds, have forced these pebbles along the coastline where they have built up along the edge of Northam Burrows.

The sand dunes along the seaward facing coastline are in a constant state of flux. During warm dry conditions an onshore breeze will help to blow sand in from the beach and build the dunes up. This normally occurs during the summer and can bury vegetation as well as the dune fences. However, as quickly as it builds up, it is soon eroded by strong winds, as well as big tides and swells that breach the pebble ridge when the winter storms arrive.

Humans have also had an impact on the landscape.

The first known settlers were stone age hunter gathers and tools as well as discarded animal bones from this era have been found on the beach in a Mesolithic rubbish dump known as a ‘kitchen midden’.

However major development did not take place until the Victorian era, when Charles Kingsley’s novel ‘Westward Ho!’ created a lot of interest in Northam Burrows and the local area. In 1863 developers identified it as a perfect location for a purpose-built holiday resort that they named after Kingsley’s novel.

Large hotels and villas were built on farmland to the south of Northam Burrows and ever since this area has been a popular location for tourists. Hundreds of thousands of people visit every year to enjoy the natural beauty and take advantage of the golden sand beach, as well as the range of water sports and other recreation on offer. The Royal North Devon Golf Club’s 18-hole links course was one of the first attractions. It was established in 1864, making the course the oldest of its kind in England. Golf continues to be played on Northam Burrows today and anyone interested in a game should contact the 68

clubhouse directly, which can be found just outside the southern boundary of the park.

As well as recreation, Northam Burrows had an important military role during World War II. Thought to be vulnerable to invasion, the coastline was fortified with fences and mine fields that were removed shortly after the war. Further inland, and still present, are a series of anti-glider trenches that were dug into the grassland to prevent gliders and parachutes from landing beyond front line defences. In the south of the park, and on neighbouring land, there remains the concrete structures from the RAF Northam radar base that operated here from 1941-1944. As part of conservation efforts to preserve local heritage many of these structures have been exposed by clearing vegetation and turf. They can now be found by

or something more filling. There is also an exhibition space with interactive displays about local heritage and the natural environment, these are updated regularly and there is always something new to see.

The helpful centre staff are always happy to help with any enquiries and different children’s activities on offer are a great way to get little ones interested in nature.

following the route of the small tidal stream that runs along the southern boundary. Later in the conflict Northam Burrows was used to prepare for D-Day and the remains of concrete dragon’s teeth, that can be seen in the Skern, are former obstacles used to practice invasion techniques. Meanwhile experimental weaponry like the Great Panjandrum, a giant rocket laden wheel, were trialled here as well.

In 2021 a new visitor centre opened on the Burrows, situated alongside the South West Coast Path it is the perfect place to start and finish your trip to the area. The new improved facilities include the popular Pebble Ridge Kitchen. This café is run by a family business serving locally sourced food and drink, homemade ice creams and a licensed bar. It is open throughout the year and a great place for a coffee

The visitor centre is used as base for a range of naturebased events that take place throughout the year.

These include free family events run during the school holidays by the on-site Ranger team such as bird box making, bug hunts and bumblebee safaris. The visitor centre also hosts workshops run by local artists and citizen science training led by other environmental organisations. In the Autumn of 2021, the visitor centre was used as a venue for the prestigious Appledore Book Festival and there are plenty more exciting things planned for 2022 and beyond.

Although there are few surfaced paths on Northam Burrows the natural terrain is mostly level and relatively easy to navigate. The new visitor centre was designed to make it even easier to access the Country Park and has accessible toilets open all year-round, with excellent facilities for disabilities and families. Northam Burrows has large carparking areas behind the pebble ridge and beside the Skern, but be aware there are seasonal charges for vehicle entry. Visitors are welcome to explore the park with their dogs but need to ensure they are kept under control to avoid disturbing the grazing animals or any wildlife. In addition to the South West Coast Path there are a number of way-marked trails with interpretation boards to point out features of interest and local folklore.

The charity’s three hospices – Little Bridge House in North Devon, Charlton Farm near Bristol, and Little Harbour in Cornwall – provide a safe haven of care, support and friendship for more than 500 children with life-limiting conditions and their families across the South West.

The hospices offer respite, emergency, end-of-life and bereavement care for the whole family, and care teams have adapted their support during the pandemic to ensure a Covid-safe lifeline wherever and whenever families need it, including for the first time ever, in families’ own homes.

The charity needs around £11m a year to run its three children’s hospices, and around 85 per cent is raised through voluntary donations.

aving first met 24 years ago, our introduction to the South West Coast Path was a day trip to Heddons Valley. We walked the valley floor, admiring the wild yellow primroses, to Heddons mouth, where we sat and ate a picnic listening to the sounds of the sea against the pebble beach. We were lucky enough to have the beach to ourselves and it whetted our appetite to continue to explore the South West Coast Path for many years to come.

As a couple we have enjoyed walking the South West Coast Path either on our own or with various friends and acquaintances over the years. It has given us the chance to take in the natural beauty this country offers. In our opinion, some of the most breathtaking sights are the high cliffs of the North Devon Coast to the Minack Theatre in Cornwall.

Other sections of the path that we have enjoyed are Minehead to Porlock and Porlock to Lynton. The walk takes in the splendour of the Selworthy Beacon and on the decent down to Porlock, the open views across the marshes at Porlock. The next section of this walk has you teetering across the precipice that is the cliff path between Porlock and Lynton. Whilst walking the Valley of the Rocks a few years ago, we came across a sign that proudly stated that nothing had happened here, which appealed to our sense of humour and has stayed with us ever since!!!!

Another section we have walked is Combe Martin to Ilfracombe; this walk affords you the most amazing views out to sea and across the moors from Holdstone Down to Great Hangman and Little Hangman. We found it best to do this particular section on a non-windy day so that you can enjoy the views without the risk of being blown off!!!

Over the last 20 years, we have walked many sections of the South West Coast Path, enjoying North Devon, North Cornwall, Lands’ End and The Lizard, culminating in us walking the section of path that spans Talland Bay to Looe in July 2021.

In early 2019, long before the word Coronavirus became popular in the English language, we had decided to start caravanning. This would mean that we could enjoy more breaks away, enabling us to take our much-loved pet MJ the cat, with us. His journey into caravanning started with harness training so that we could take him on our SW coastal path walks.

Much to our surprise, he took to it well, considering he was a ten years old moggie at the time.

Since then, MJ, the hiking cat (Caravanning with Cat’s Facebook), has travelled all over the country with us and particularly enjoys the coastal path in Somerset and South Cornwall. MJ is happy to walk in his harness and on a lead then, when he gets tired, he jumps into a backpack we have for him and enjoys the scenery from the comfort of his carrier. When we are in crowded areas he also likes to be in his carrier. It is fair to say that MJ always is the centre of attention and a crowd-puller!!!!

If anyone else wants to consider hiking with their much-loved moggie, we would suggest harness training in the home in the first instances for a few weeks. Then gradually take them out for walks in familiar surroundings before venturing on your travels.

It is essential that your cat feels safe and not rushed into doing this. MJ is now so comfortable coming away with us, that he is often seen outside the caravan without a harness and lead but will always stay within sight of us. He is also known for visiting our friends in their caravan and falling asleep on their bed!!!

he coastal path is much more than just a path, isn’t it? It’s inspiration, tranquillity, discovery, creativity, therapy, memories, challenging physical and mental strength.

For me, it has become tranquillity, inspiration and creativity, and less about miles covered …

Since the pandemic started, the path has been walks to discover nature, learning the names of wild flowers and birds along the way. To savour the stunning views, to stop and watch seals bobbing about and Oyster Catchers squeaking with excitement. The coastal path brings much to discover.

I returned to Cornwall in August 2019 after living abroad for several years, and was itching to rediscover my home county. It seemed I had little time to explore, before …. bam….. stay at home! That was when the coastal path became something so much more than views and fresh air.

Two of my nearest beaches closed for those months of the first lockdown. But to sit on the harbour wall at Charlestown, look down on the beach and just to hear the sea was so soothing. I’d walk from Charlestown to Porthpean, and onto Pentewan …. triple dose of beaches; (much of the coastal path between Charlestown and Porthpean is closed due to erosion, so you have to take the road) It was interesting to see the season develop along the path; first the Blackthorn and Hawthorn flowered along with primroses, followed by the wild garlic and three-cornered leek, followed by the Elder trees blossoming, bringing a gorgeous scent to the path.

Do you remember how beautiful the spring of 2020 was? It was wonderful to be on the path …. wide open stunning views, peaceful calm, and nature having its chance to burst into life.

As we became able to travel further, I’d flick through my South West Coast path book and decide where my next adventure would be. I branched out to the north coast, sometimes just short walks to enjoy the seascape, Boscastle and Tintagel, Port Isaac, Polly Joke to Holywell (the path around West Pentire is absolutely stunning in early June when the field poppies are in flower). Mawgan Porth to Porthcothan; the views are incredible, especially around Bedruthan Steps. In early May when the coastal flowers are blooming, and the Sky Larks serenading it feels like the best place on earth.

Lantic Bay to Polperro is also a cracker. Plenty of ups and downs … it was a good challenge for lockdown legs! But the views …. oh my lord, so incredibly beautiful. That ranks high on my list for inspiring views! There is a steepish climb towards the end, then you seem to burst through the trees, and there is the beautiful fishing village of Polperro below you.

Now, I prefer the less busy sections of the coastal path … so I can savour the views, enjoy the wildlife and stop to take it all in. Seaton to Portwrinkle is a lovely stretch of coast …just after leaving Seaton,

sandy Towan Beach is where you can spot the seals.

You’ll also pass the Wreck Post, which was used for Coastguard practice exercise, as it replicates the mast of a ship. Getting closer to St Anthony Head, the path becomes a bit steeper as Falmouth comes into view. St Anthony Head is an interesting place to explore, with the Battery built in 1885, you’ll also find a bird hide here. Don’t forget to see ‘Fraggle Rock’ Lighthouse as you continue your way around the headland, with views to St Mawes opposite. It really is a lovely walk, and the treescape at the headland always reminds me of Tuscany … although that might be wishful thinking due to a lack of travel!

During the first lockdown I also began beachcombing, and the coast path has brought me to many lovely beaches that I wouldn’t have explored otherwise.

I found crafting to be a great therapy … giving something your complete focus, disconnecting, and producing a lovely piece of art is a complete joy. I made many cards for friends, just to let them know I was thinking of them. The coast has brought me a lot of creative inspiration.

Carne Beach on the Roseland is a good beach for hunting sea glass and shells … look out for the bright yellows of Flat Periwinkle, or the cute wee faces of Cowrie shells (they look like little bear faces!) Park at Pendower, and, at low tide, walk the entire length to the far side of Carne to make sure you don’t miss any treasures! Then continue your walk to Nare Head.

One of the best beaches is Pentewan in St Austell Bay. The coast path to Blackhead makes a lovely walk …. check out the pebble cove at Trenarren, and the lovely cottages before heading up the steep steps through the back of the cottage gardens, and the hidden wooden gate to get back onto the coast path …. it really is like venturing into the Secret Garden.

I took the higher route up through the woods …. absolutely beautiful views. Gorran Haven, passed Dodman Point to Porthluney Bay is another beautiful and fairly quiet stretch.

I also spend a lot of time exploring around The Roseland Peninsula. I love the little hamlets on the approach; Portholland, Portloe, which then leads to Nare Head. The walk from Portscatho to St Anthony Head is a great place to watch seals bobbing in the waters. Walking mostly along farmland, it’s a gentle walk for much of the way; a bit further on from

Blessings can often be hidden, but I am so thankful for the blessings that lockdown provided; rediscovering my home county, reconnecting with nature, exploring creativity, discovering the inspiration of the coastal path which brought me to creating my little biz.
