Bidding at auction just got easier

H

ave you always wished you could attend an auction but felt intimidated to enter the room? Scared you might not fit in or that it was just for the jet-set? Thanks to Savacool and Sons of San Diego there’s a better, easier and less intimidating way to enjoy an auction: at home and online. Yes, Savacool has put the “cool” in online auction and estate sales: you can now bid on an eighteenth-century armchair, antique necklace or anything else that attracts your attention from right behind your home or office computer. “We only sell online through our custom designed auction platform. Users from other auction platforms have complimented us on the ease of use of our auction site. But beware that it is addictive,” Matt Savacool said. “We specialize in high-end and eclectic and look for interesting sales with some historical value. Recently we sold items from a John Lloyd Wright designed home in Mission Hills, items from one of the sons of William Randolph Hearst and items from the former secretary of the Smithsonian. Our best sales have everything from designer handbags to fine furniture, fine jewelry, collectibles, home decor, and tools.” Savacool started the unique online estate auction in Jan 2015 and to date has held more than 100 successful online sales. He said he wanted to take the auction and estate world by storm, and it appears he has. No stranger to the business he previously owned a 3,000-square-foot brick and mortar

Savacool and Sons works with appraisal experts in most fields from rugs to precious stones and everything in between. “Having lived in this space for almost a decade we have a pretty good feel for values and in cases where we don’t, we use the same tool certified appraisers use, the Internet,” Savacool said. What ultimately makes Savacool and Sons different than other similar businesses? He has a definitive answer: “We sell 99 percent of all items we list and never have the problem after a sale of finding a dealer to buy out all of the contents we didn’t sell. We offer shipping and have recently shipped to Moscow, Russia, London, England and Manhattan, NY.” It’s customers are as diversified as the items up for auction. “Over the years we have organically established a large local database of buyers who are mainly end buyers, but we do have quite a few dealers. Clients seek us out to sell their belongings’ a lot come from word-of-mouth and referrals. We are known for doing the job right and take pride in our work. “I tell clients that we are in the entertainment business just as much as we’re in the Savacool and Sons helps its clients sell evbusiness of retail. It’s a very connected social erything within a short window of time for the experience for our buyers especially during the most money. In some cases, it consigns the items. final hours of a sale when items are closing; In others, it buys out the contents of the estate. that’s when things start to get interesting. It’s Either way the items end up in its online auca rush of adrenaline we all need from time to tions. It doesn’t keep anything or sell on eBay; it time.” For more information please visit www. just passes things along, Savacool said. savacoolandsons.com. packed antique store in south Oceanside occasionally selling on eBay and ran traditional tag estate sales. “Running a traditional estate sale where every item is priced is equivalent to trying to sell the contents of an antique store in a weekend; you’re setting yourself up for failure. It was determined that online auctions were the most effective way to sell everything quickly for the most money based on feedback from East Coast customers and extensive research,” he said. So, he split the store and dedicated half to auctions but quickly liquidated the entire store and focused 100 percent on auctions. The model works well. “Over the years we’ve established a large local following with little advertising spent, working hard to perfect the model before growing. We’re moving a lot of product and we’re getting recognized so much other local brick and mortar businesses are following our lead and switching to our model. A lot of our customers are repeat customers and we treat them like family,” he said.

Accomplished urban designer renovates Inn at Moonlight Beach By Carey Blakely

Moonlight Renovations

ENCINITAS — Shangwen Chiu Kennedy refers to herself as an “accidental innkeeper.” With degrees from Harvard and Cornell and work experience in large-scale urban design, the desire to renovate and run a five-room inn in Encinitas is not what immediately comes to mind. But after speaking with Kennedy, who purchased the Inn at Moonlight Beach with her husband, Mike, in 2017, one begins to understand why it’s exactly what she wants to do right now. “I have the drive and passion to create places that support people’s well-being and foster the joy of connection — whether that is with another person, with oneself or with nature,” Kennedy explained. With certain long-term projects, Kennedy watched with dissatisfaction how particular concepts didn’t quite come to fruition, which she likened to “an illustration book that wouldn’t get realized in full.” In other cases, she didn’t get the TURN TO MOONLIGHT ON 8

‘TREE DOCTOR’ Voted Best of North County

Since 1985, Russell Bowman has been delighting residents of North County with his plant expertise. So, it’s no wonder Bowman Tree and Plant Care Specialists has recently been named the San Diego Union-Tribune Community Press’ “Best of North County” for landscaping. Lovingly referred to as the “tree doctor” and “landscaper extraordinaire” by his clients, Bowman is known for transforming sickly gardens into Disneyesque wonderlands. Using his own proprietary blend of organic micro-biotics, Bowman treats plants at night—a trick he picked up during his time as a horticulturist at Disneyland. “When you treat plants at night, they have enough time to absorb the materials before being penetrated by the sun’s rays.” He said. “That’s why, when most people are winding down their days, eating dinner, and going to bed, I’m often out treating plants and trees.” He’s done more than care for sick plants though, he’s revolutionized both residential and commercial landscaping with his fertilizer tanks.

THE COAST NEWS | SPRING HOME & GARDEN 2019

“When you give your body proper nutrition, it affects your overall health and boosts your immunity to diseases that you might come into contact with. The same is true for plants and trees.” He said. Bowman specially retrofits tanks of fertilizer to work with a client’s current irrigation system so that each time the landscaping is watered, it’s also fertilized. “This is the secret to keeping your property looking like a five-star resort.” He notes. He’s also quick to point out that healthy plants are also environmentally friendly. A healthy plant will be more efficient at photosynthesizing sunlight into oxygen as well as at using water. Bowman has had clients report a thirty percent reduction in their water bills after installation of a fertilizer tank, while their gardens remain lush and vibrant. A favorite example of the efficacy of the fertilizer tank is a pair of neighboring jacaranda trees and lawns. The owners of the property on the left used Bowman’s fertilizer tank, which not only made their lawn greener but also caused their tree

to continue to bloom happily for four months after the tree on the right had lost its last purple flower. Bowman’s dedication to plants is unwavering. He drives three hundred miles a day, visiting customers around the county, often finishing at ten or eleven at night. In addition, he donates his time and expertise for the trees at the Helen Woodward Animal Center, the Rock Church in Point Loma, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, the YMCA, Stone Brewery in Escondido, and San Diego Botanic Garden. He also served with the San Diego Rose Society in Balboa Park for 12 years. “My calling is to beautify the earth, making trees and plants healthy,” he explains. “I’m not formally trained. The Master Gardner taught me everything I know. I’ve learned that when you love something, it’s not something you have to do; it’s something you want to do.” To learn more about Bowman and his services, visit www.russellbowmanlandscape.com or contact Russell for a complimentary consultation at 858499-9417.

chance to see how people actually used the space after it was designed and built, nor could she modify it after the fact to adapt to occupants’ needs. The Inn at Moonlight Beach has allowed Kennedy to redesign the hotel space — which was built in 1970 at 105 N. Vulcan Avenue — exactly as she sees fit and to interact with people as they inhabit it. Her goal is to “inspire and support” her guests and to make the inn as environmentally sustainable as possible. In fact, the inn is currently undergoing review to become the first-ever hospitality business to achieve WELL Building certification, a rigorous rating system that seeks to enhance human health and well-being through design. After extensive renovations, the inn had a soft launch in May 2018. It officially debuts its post-redesign look this week. The inn’s style combines elements of minimalism, modernism and Asian fusion — with attention paid throughout to nature. Natural light imbues each suite, and gardens surround the inn with fruits, vegetables, teas and herbs that guests can pick and take home. House Method, a home and life-

style website, recently selected the Inn at Moonlight Beach as one of 12 “Best Micro Getaways for Design Lovers” in the nation. Emily McCrary-Ruiz-Esparza, the site’s brand editor, told The Coast News via email that the inn “was unlike any other hotel or guest house we saw in our research and through our nominations.” McCrary-Ruiz-Esparza continued, “The ultra airy, Zen-gardenlike setting paired with the custom breakfast baskets and beach bikes was so quintessentially Southern California.

We loved the attention to guests’ health and wellness — a nice surprise often overlooked in the hospitality industry.” When the couple first purchased the Inn at Moonlight Beach, many of the property’s plants were dying and the soil was depleted. The first step, then, was to make what Kennedy referred to as a “huge energetic shift from dying to revitalizing.” She looked at what was thriving, like succulents, and planted more of them and removed what was dying, like certain cedar trees. She reused the cedar

stumps as tables at the inn and saved some of the living cedars on the north side of the property. Much focus had to be paid to re-nourishing the soil to create the hotel’s biodynamic garden. To Kennedy it was important that the inn flourish from the ground up, she explained. While she is both a landscape architect and building architect, Kennedy’s urban design background is what mainly drove her approach to renovating the inn. She’s more interested in systems, like powering the hotel with 90 percent solar energy and preventing soil runoff through strategic planting choices, than she is with design for design’s sake. The couple and their two young children live in private quarters on the top floor of the two-story inn. Nightly room rates start at $249. Property amenities include a meditation garden, yoga deck, an indoor common area with complimentary tea and healthy snacks, an outdoor fire pit and a makers’ space for blending teas, making potpourri sachets and creating other crafts. Room amenities include soaking tubs, purified water and air systems, organic cotton towels and robes, aromatherapy diffusers and secluded outdoor decks — most with ocean views. Chance meetings give passion and purpose to local realtor REGION — A little bit of luck and a lot of hard work can change your life. Real estate agent Kelli Woodard knows this firsthand. When she decided to move to San Diego in 2015, she had little direction other than knowing she wanted to live near the beach. She had no idea that a few chance meetings would shape her entire career. “I was born and raised in Phoenix and I stayed there until I was 18,” Woodard said. “I went to the University of San Francisco, then transferred to Grand Canyon University on a full soccer scholarship, and was bored after graduation in 2012. I had a little money saved up and decided I wanted to be near the beach. I posted on Facebook that I was moving to San Diego, and a good friend I went to San Francisco with reached out and offered me a place to stay with her in El Cajon in a father’s five-bedroom house. So that was how I ended up here.” The friend she was staying with ended up moving suddenly to L.A., and Woodard found herself with no idea what was going to happen to her. WATER WORKS Helpful tips on how to save water and create a thriving garden in a dry climate

By Lexy Brodt

Spring is just around the corner — and whether you’re a novice plant enthusiast or a green-thumbed gardener, it’s time to get growing. After a seven-year drought finally came to an end this winter, California has been hit with a deluge of vibrant greenery and super blooms. But we’re still keeping an eye out for how to make our own backyards more sustainable and water-friendly. “The tropical gardens of old are not appropriate for our droughtprone San Diego,” said Jennifer Galey, environmental educator at the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation. We chatted with Galey and seasoned gardener Pat Welsh — author of “Pat Welsh’s Southern California Organic Gardening: Month by Month” and a member of the Del RAIN BARRELS are a useful way to conserve water while also har- Mar Gardening Club — for tips on nessing nutritious rainwater for gardening. typically dry California climate.

Saving the last drops With more rainfalls still on their way, Galey points to rain barrels as a useful way of capturing the last of that nutritious winter rain water and putting it to good use. “I let no water leave my property, I capture it all,” Galey said. Rain barrels will hold about 50 gallons of water, but Galey also outfits her barrel with a hose during a heavy rain, taking advantage of excess water in order to deep water her fruit trees. The San Diego County Water Authority’s Sustainable Landscape Guidelines advise adding a rain barrel or cistern to the bottom of your home’s downspout to collect stray rain, rather than letting it become surface runoff on its way to our bluffs and beaches. ‘Water deeply and infrequently’ Welsh recommends gardeners water “deeply and infrequently, not shallowly and often,” and use drip irrigation to help cultivate vegetables in raised beds, for example. Drip irrigation is a micro-irrigation system that gets water right to the roots of a plant — unlike spray irrigation, which may distribute water inefficiently. “It’s really the best because you can put water exactly where you need it,” Galey said, advising that plants are watered in the morning so the water doesn’t evaporate as quickly.

by slowing evaporation, but also adds nutrients to the soil and stymies weed growth.

What to plant, and where? Welsh recommends avoiding a “spotty” garden, and instead opting to plant big drifts of “spectacular, drought-resistant” plants such as pride of madeira, clivia, wisteria and bougainvillea. She also suggests using native plants that are well-suited for gardens, such as California holly, California lilacs or western redbud. “Let the backbone of your garden consist of colorful, drought-resistant Mediterranean plants and California native plants,” she said. in North County livens up cities and homes

LANDSCAPE ART

By Kelli Kyle ENCINITAS — Have you ever walked a quiet coastal street and gazed in awe at a front yard adorned with sculptures and plants that just seem to go together? Or maybe you’ve admired the mosaic work at Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach, or the light sculpture right up the road near the fire station. This is landscape art in action. You’ll most likely see it in public cities, hospitals and corporate campuses, but private citizens also commission artists to get in on the scene. WHAT IS LANDSCAPE ART? This takes on several forms, but the best way to understand landscape art is to see it in action. Jeffery Laudenslager’s front yard in Leucadia is a prime example. Five unique metal sculptures shine in the sun and twirl with the wind, adding even more character to the beautiful modern-contemporary home that rests behind them. “Most people don’t see it as being landscape sculpture or landscape art, but art that’s in a landscape,” Laudenslager, the creator of the sculptures, said. Of course, these dancing metal sculptures didn’t come with Laudenslager’s landscape. It was an intentional design process that integrated his work with the look of his home. This is every artist’s challenge — to make the unnatural seem natural, as though the piece was there the entire time. “Art is another way on focusing attention and bringing something to kind of a conclusion,” Laudenslager said. “What kind

scape architect handles logistics. They are a state-certified professional, and on a project, they handle grating, drainage, cement, etc. Megan Allison, professor of Landscape LANDSCAPE ARTIST VS. Architecture at MiraCosta College, says this LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT distinction exists for the public’s safety and Most landscape art projects involve a landscape architect. A landscape artist designs well-being. “Landscape architects design things that, the sculpture or artwork, while the landof landscape you have and how you want to incorporate art into it is very different.”

if they go wrong, they can hurt people,” Allison said. “Walls can fall down, things like that.” Working with a landscape architect is an important piece of the production process for public and corporate projects. Encinitas-based light sculptor Deanne Sabeck has worked with landscape architects on many occasions. She says artists ideally want to get involved during the design phase, before any construction begins. “The sooner the artist gets involved with the project, the better,” Sabeck said. “The landscape architect might even modify things to fit the art piece. Once you have a finalized situation, it means that the artist has to conform everything to what’s existing.” SEE THE ART IN ACTION Aside from private homes, landscape art is all around us. Big construction projects and local municipalities often commission artists like Sabeck and Laudenslager to help beautify parks, hospitals and office buildings. Laudenslager says the art helps humanize these spaces. “You can go to the post office and mail a letter, but if you go to the post office and it has a nice garden out in front and a little decoration, it’s a different experience,” Laudenslager said. There are several spots in San Diego County to view landscape art projects: The park at Swami’s Beach on K Street, Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach, Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, Scripps Hospital in Encinitas and many DEANNE SABECK, a light sculpture artist, created this temporary outdoor piece for the city of other places across the county. Screen Systems. In fact, Schantz is the only Tiger Wire dealer in the Western United States. “The Tiger Wire Stainless Steel Screen System is guaranteed not to rip or tear from dogs, cats or kids. If your pets have clawed or scratched your screens, pet-proof screens are the perfect solution,” he said. Tiger Wire Screen enclosures (commonly referred to as ‘catios’) keep your small pets safe from coyotes and hawks, too, and let’s face it these critters have become more common in neighborhoods throughout SoCal. “Tiger Wire cannot be cut with a razor knife like ‘pet resistant’ screens either,” he said. “These screens work the same as any screen while providing excellent protection from insects, snakes, lizards, rats, etc. A Tiger Wire Stainless Steel pet-proof screen is the only screen that is truly pet-proof. A pet lover himself, Schantz said he always takes time to pet a dog when visiting a home and knows how important pets are to pet parents. MORE THAN JUST A SCREEN SERVICE But what makes The Screen Machine differ- “Nothing is worse than losing a pet to a coyote or a ent than others is its unique product, Tiger Wire thief,” he said. “Tiger Wire helps keep your pets safe pring has arrived. Are you and your pets ready for the warm weather? As the temps continue to climb and you are spending more time leaving windows and doors open, you might want to take some precautions. From making sure screens have no holes or tears to a special type that ensures Fido or Fluffy can’t tear them, The Screen Machine has you covered in more ways than one. Founded in 1996, The Screen Machine is a veteran-owned small business with three employees, according to President J.R. Schantz. It is a mobile screen repair service offering a variety of screen options for your home or business. “We bring our mobile workshop to you and perform repairs and replacement of your screens onsite. This allows it to be made to fit the first time; saving you time so you can do what you like instead of taking screens to be repaired someplace,” he said.

However, Schantz said Tiger Wire is the best on the market and will save you money in the future because it won’t need replacement. Of course, if you want to also enjoy the warmer seasons not worry about pests and bugs, screen enclosures are wonderful additions. They can be a great investment as they keep patio furniture, barbecues and Big Screen TVs secure in case of rain. “Enclosures can be custom made to your specifications, and there are endless options,” he said. “You can add drop shades to keep out the hot setting sun or opt for clear vinyl drop shades, coupled with an IR patio heater to create a three-season room for year-round enjoyment of your screen room.” But don’t worry, if you don’t have an existing porch or pergola to screen in, The Screen Machine partners with All Seasons Windows and Patios to build your enclosure exactly the way you want!

GREAT TIPS FOR BUYING PLANTS For Weekend Gardeners or Seasoned Veterans

W

alking amidst rows of plants in various stages of growth in San Diego Botanic Garden’s propagation area, SDBG’s Former Horticulture Manager Liz Rozycki thinks for a moment before answering the question, “Why purchase plants from a local nursery instead of a big chain store?” “You really wouldn’t want your yard looking like the plant shop at Target or the local dentist’s office, would you?” Rozycki quips. “And, more importantly, a local nursery has a knowledgeable staff, with a wider variety of California natives and other species of plants that will grow well in Southern California, making your yard look more interesting and unique.” Locally-owned nurseries can also guide buyers, both novice and more experienced, to plants that will do well in a targeted area of customers’ yards. Rozycki recommends that home owners landscape one area of their yards at a time. “That way you can focus on what you need in a given area,” elaborates Rozycki. “What hydro zone is it in? Is this space south facing? Getting full sun? If so, you’ll want to purchase tough, water-wise plants.” Plants purchased to be used in smaller zones in yards, can also be put into the ground in a reasonable amount of time, so the back yard gardening project home owners have taken on for the weekend isn’t so overwhelming.

THE COAST NEWS | SPRING HOME & GARDEN 2019

Rozycki recommends looking out for the following in plants purchased at any nursery including SDBG’s Plant Shop, as a sign of good health, and that they will do well once planted in your garden: • New growth • Blooms (if in season) • Healthy foliage • No insects • Well established and firmly rooted (not ‘bulging’ out of the pot) • Grown under appropriate light conditions • Not too ‘leggy’ She also says that it’s always a boon for at-home gardeners, whether weekend or seasoned veterans, to be informed. “Grab a ‘Western Garden’ book, go online, or Google information about a plant you’re considering for your garden on your smartphone,” says Rozycki. “And don’t forget to plant for all seasons. Winter bloomers are sometimes forgotten but you can plant these gems right now for next winter’s bloom - smaller aloes like Aloe ‘Blue Elf ’ or Aeonium ‘Kiwi’ which has a nice variegated look. Or try bulbs such as Velthaimia bracteata (Forest Lily) or Haemanthus albiflos (Paint Brush Plant) in your garden.”

Futons of the1970s have come of age

L

eisure suits, Disco, bell bottoms and futons – welcome to the 1970s of yesteryear. And while you may be hardpressed to find a “Saturday Night Fever” album complete with tunes from the Bee Gees, futons – believe it or not – are still going strong. According to Suzanne Diamond, CEO of The Futon Shops, futons get a bad rap, but they may be great comfort for some. While it’s true futons are typically thought of as something from another decade their precision has changed since their early days. “We are in over 3 million American homes, and our customers love us,” she said. “In the old days futons were thin and made from cotton. Today’s futons are thick, made from micro coils, coconut coir, organic wool and cotton. We offer memory foams and gels made from a hybrid plant-based foam.” And she should know since she has been in business since 1976 and has 11 locations throughout California. “I manufactured some of the first futons in America in the 1970s, even then, it was based on natural fibers and natural materials as an alternate to polyurethane foams made from chemicals and bi-products of refining oil,” she said. Diamond said it’s true futons do have a negative connotation: “Because companies started importing cheap futons from China, and flooding our market with click claks that they called futons but actually are cheap sofa beds. There is a negative perception of futons that is hard to break.”

Fools for Futons

However, today’s buyers are far from those flower kids of the 1970s and 1960s; the core of her

business she said: “still want natural fibers, organic materials and no chemicals in their sofa. Futons also aren’t just one-size-fits-all as they range from “very firm to very soft and come in twin, East Coast Queen or California King.” She manufactures 45 different configurations and said: “Our futons are more like mattresses.” Futons might also last longer than your typi-

if you’re looking for a sleeping cushion to last more than a few months. “We manufacture our futons from the ground up. Buying wool and cotton from farmers and doing our own felting, So, we are farm to futon. This cuts out the middleman and makes our mattresses very affordable. Diamond also sells organic sofas, that are traditional looking but made of organic and natural materials instead of Dacron polyester and polyurethane foams. She also sells platform bedroom groups made from natural woods with linseed oil finishes instead of varnishes and paints. “We make custom cushions for Bay windows, boats and RVs. We handcraft bed and decorative pillows, out of natural fibers, slip covers, and cushions covers in hundreds of fabrics,” she said.

Why Switch

cal mattress, Diamond added: “Polyurethane foam, memory foam, gel, all disintegrate with age. As polyurethane foam ages, the chemical particles become airborne and can be absorbed into the bloodstream causing a variety of diseases.”

Return on Investment

Futons may also prove to be a good investment

The best thing about owning and sleeping on a futon Diamond said is that you can have a chemical-free sofa that turns into a comfortable bed. You can also take off the slip cover and wash it or replace it, and if you want a new look, simply change the cover. And if you’re wondering if Diamond practices what she preaches and sleeps on a futon herself, the answer is a resounding yes: “Of course I do! I sleep on the Dawn mattress.” If you’re ready to try a futon Diamond said: “come in and tush test them. We’ll ask if you are a back sleeper needing a firmer bed, or a side sleeper, needing a little more support of hips, shoulders and knees. Also, how much do you weigh, are you sleeping alone or with someone else? Do you co-sleep with your children?” In the end, a futon can give you an honest sleep and one you won’t soon forget!
