When I was reflecting on this edition’s themes of Green Living and Fashion, two vivid memories came to me: my first moment of green activism when I wrote to the Prime Minister opposing the damming of Tasmania’s Franklin River, and when I first felt ‘fashionable’ – in my sky-blue, terry towelling tracksuit and mustard-coloured clogs! Clearly I was deluded about my fashion sense, but on the right track in my passion for the environment!

Of course, being Spring, we get into the garden as well as introducing you to new coast characters. In this edition, I’ve been delighted by the poetry of vintage island surfer Dogga Luke, intrigued by Michael Muetze, a traditional travelling German carpenter, and laughed at the irreverence of artist Sue Gilford. Amanda Drennan has faced many challenges in her life: born with only one leg, this incredible Paralympian recently swam around Phillip Island in an effort to raise money for improving medical services on the island and we are proud to present her story.

vets display Phillip Island’s Vietnam Veterans Museum’s latest exhibit has made a spectacular entrance. Royal Australian Army soldiers from RAAF Base Amberley transported a Westland Wessex HAS.31B Helicopter from its last base of operation at HMAS Albatross at Nowra in NSW to its final home on Phillip Island. The chopper was unloaded by crane and now sits proudly in the National Vietnam Veterans Museum. www.vietnamvetsmuseum.org

Phillip Island’s SES Unit is keen to welcome new volunteers of all ages. SES volunteers enjoy the rewards of making a difference and learning useful skills.

Phillip Island SES volunteers respond to flood and storm damage, and support police in search and rescue. Volunteers also visit schools and co-ordinate displays to educate the community about how to cope with emergencies.

There are roles for active people who like emergency operations and there are equally important roles for people who want to support the Unit with equipment maintenance, fund raising and education.

Bob and Anne Davie were married in 1956 – the same year that television and the Olympic Games came to Melbourne. Over fifty years of married life on Phillip Island has brought them closer together - surviving the ups and downs of farming and family life. Anne received an OAM for outstanding service to South Gippsland’s environmental, cultural and social welfare organisations in 2006. Bob and Anne’s united passion for the environment has resulted in an ongoing transformation of their 360-acre property ‘Bimbadeen’ into a model of sustainability so they can leave behind a better environment for their children and grandchildren.

Bob I grew up between Middle Brighton and Phillip Island. I first met Anne at my parents’ guesthouse ‘Erehwon’ in Cowes when we were fourteen.

It was love at first sight when I first saw Anne - I was smitten. She had a lovely open face and smile. She had a husky and sexy voice and was so much fun to be with. We just grew up together and always had fun – we went to local pictures in the Shire Hall when Anne was down on Phillip Island. We wrote love letters to each nearly every day and missed each other when we were apart and were married when we were 20.

I started farming at the age of 15 having left school as the result of an accident. My brother and I purchased an 80-acre farm, which is now part of our current farm, Bimbadeen. We knew nothing about farming so went to the then, Department of Agriculture, and asked what to do.

They told us to ‘plough in the Melaleuca trees which would make very good humus to grow grass’ so we did. (We have since planted over 45,000 trees with the help of Landcare and many friends to address this mistake!)

We then managed to put in a boundary fence so we could run some stock. It wasn’t possible to pay for two fences to protect the lines of trees because in those days, fences were all made by hand with no posthole digger or front-end loader. We ran about 20 milking cows and then bought the 120-acre property next door and Anne and I ran that from the time we were married in 1956.

We produced milk for the Phillip Island Dairy and supplied milk, fresh separated cream, beef, pork and poultry to many of the guesthouses in Cowes including Erehwon, Broadwater, Elsford, Continental and Yackatoon. We collected all the food scraps from the guesthouses to take back to the farm to feed the poultry and pigs. We also returned the cutlery we found that had been thrown out by mistake!

Quite often we would invite friends and guests out to help us and they really loved it. We used to go out at night to different farms like Jessie McGreggors at the end of Pyramid Rock Road to catch the wild poultry that was nesting in the trees just so we could keep up with the demand! I remember one time we were very short of poultry as a fox had bitten the heads off all 40-odd turkeys we were preparing for the Christmas dinners at the guesthouses. Somehow all those turkeys ended up on the menu!

In 1967, we went to Queensland and purchased two Brahman bulls to bring to Bimbadeen. Many locals, thought we were mad! However this move led us to establish one of Australia’s most renowned Brangus Studs.

Working to improve Bimbadeen, planting trees and sharing the hard times and enjoying the good times are the best things we have done together. We are very proud to have built up a good beef cattle herd and developed a sustainable property with an Environment Management System in place so we can produce Enviromeat.

I am really uncertain as to where I would be without Anne. I always say; it takes two to tango. She is my soul mate and such a caring sharing, loyal loving ‘people’ person. I admire her intelligence and her energy – it’s hard to keep up with her! We have a lovely family of four children and ten grandchildren and we are looking forward to seeing all our grandchildren growing up and developing their lives and ambitions.

and our path is to accept responsibility for the property and its carbon footprint. We are now carbon farming and intend to show how it is possible for farmers not to be frightened by a Carbon Tax, but to be positive and responsible for their farming activities.

Anne I grew up in Caulfield and used to visit Phillip Island. I met Bob at the Davie family’s Erehwon Guest House, on the Esplanade in Cowes. My first impression of Bob was that he was good-looking, outgoing and great at sport. We started writing lots of letters and made a phone call once a fortnight - if our parents allowed us!

I moved to our Phillip Island farm after we were married in 1956. It was certainly a very different life for me, a city girl. I only knew one family on the island. My biggest headache was confronting my slow combustion stove every day and then successfully putting meals on the table, that were befitting to a farmer’s wife and keeping the cake tins full!

Farmer’s wives in the 1950’s very rarely had a profession, so in order to continue with my work as a physiotherapist, I would get in the car and visit patients at night, after I had put the children to bed and a meal on the table for Bob! I still remember, that if I were treating a farmer with a lower back problem, his wife would sit in the room with us! I think people were unsure what physiotherapists actually did!

Bob always supported my profession and I continued to conduct a physiotherapy practice on Phillip Island for 40 years. It was through this opportunity of getting to know people in a one-on-one situation, that I became more aware of their needs and the lack of opportunities available, especially for women.

When a Community Development Officer position was advertised in 1975, I applied. I was successful and worked with communities in the Shire of Bass, Borough of Wonthaggi and Shire of Phillip Island and I became involved in many causes and issues. My role was concerned with the empowerment of people to plan at community level, for programs such as Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres and new educational opportunities. I also became involved with many arts groups and started the Regional Arts Forum. I just felt committed to strengthening a sense of community and enhancing feelings of selfworth. And to think I have lived long enough to see a woman Prime Minister, a woman Governor-General and many more women in local government, it’s wonderful!

Having our family of four is the best thing Bob and I have done together. Our children have each grown into competent and caring individuals. Bob and I share values about how we perceive the responsibility of managing and improving our farm. We are the land’s caretakers and want to leave it in better condition than when we started farming. I admire Bob for his resilience; loyalty, kindness and commitment and if I could sum him up in one word it would be ‘trustworthy’.

I look forward to a future when people understand the fragility of the natural environment and work together to respect and nurture it. And my wish is that I live long enough to see the elimination of indigenous disadvantage!

For us, farming has changed from an era of trial and error gaining information from local farmers, to one based on scientific evidence and use of modern technology. Today Bimbadeen runs 420 head of beef cattle coast 21

She was a bit snobbish, and said, ‘We’re so thrilled you’re marrying an academic and following the family tradition.’ I said, ‘Dad isn’t an academic’ and she replied, ‘Oh no, I mean your real father.’ I couldn’t believe it – I was absolutely gobsmacked. That’s when I began looking for my birth mother.

I discovered I was born in Ivanhoe in April 1940 and the name on my birth certificate was Airlie – after the hospital where I was born.

I was adopted about a year later into the Morgan family and what I call ‘the gilded cage’, where everything was provided except real involvement. It was very upper-middle class. I never felt at home – I knew unequivocally that I didn’t belong.

At about age seven, I was sent to stay with an aunt, and came home to find my sister was gone. I was told she’d died and gone to heaven, but a replacement had come – a little baby. Years later I found out that my sister was sent away when my adoptive mother got pregnant – there was actually a battle about which one of us to keep. My aunt told me that I was chosen as I had a ‘better pedigree’. My sister had also been told that I was dead, and so the myths went on…

I kept searching for my mother and finally got hold of my second schedule birth certificate and saw my mother’s real name: Ada Ivy Dalgleish. Then we found a cross-reference it said she lived in Hobart.

So we kept searching, and went to Tasmania and found her grave. The gravestone mentioned ‘son Carl’ – she’d had an eight-year old child before I was born. So I thought, ‘If I can find Carl, he would at least have a photo of Mother’ – but no luck. Then naval records revealed his actual name was William Carl Dalgleish, but again we struck a brick wall.

In desperation my wife Gabrielle sent a letter to the ABC’s ‘Can We Help?’ program. Eight days later, they called and asked if I’d be interested in being on TV. I agreed, and they said, ‘Good’: and after eight days, ’we’ve found your brother.’ – and I’d been searching for 50 years!

I was very anxious before we met. But when I saw him coming up the drive, there was an instant rapport – I knew him! You could see in Carl’s face that he was experiencing the same feeling.

We embraced and talked, and had a coffee. The film crew left us alone and there were a lot of tears. Then I was asked to open an album Carl had made for me, and I saw a photo of my birth mother for the very first time. It felt absolutely amazing. The most moving moment of my life.

Carl told me that just before I was born, my mother had put an ad in the paper. He read it to me with great hurt: ‘Kind person wanted for eight-year-old child to keep – please contact me.’

As a child in my ‘gilded cage’, I always drew. At seventeen I met a group of people with blue lips and blackened eyes – obviously early beatniks, pre-hippies – and they were all painters. I followed them into a pub and started talking to a guy who was sitting at a table, swigging from a bottle of scotch. He said, ‘hi’ and told me he’d painted a few pictures… it was artist John Perceval! This was my first introduction to art in the universal sense. I went to the pub every Friday and started madly painting and had my first exhibition at 17 – and I’ve been painting ever since!

Every day I have thought of my mother, so I created a series of paintings with imaginings of what she might have looked like. I also thought of what she might have felt like when giving me away, and depicted her crying tears of blood. She had had two children to two men, out of wedlock, in the 1930s, a time when there would have been a lot of pressure from family and society on young women.

For others in the same situation, my advice is to keep searching. When I met my brother, it was the end of an era. It covered up the big black hole in my life. Now I have a new family. It’s a beautiful tying together of a lot of lost cords.

This German-born carpenter is following the path of hundreds of years of tradition.

Twenty-five-year-old Michael Muetze turns a few heads whenever he steps onto an Aussie building site. Dressed from head to toe in black, this traditional travelling tradesman seems pretty used to the curious looks he receives as he strides – tall, fit and confident – into the café for our interview.

Born in central Germany, just north of Frankfurt, Michael completed a carpentry apprenticeship in his hometown of Frankenberg. Then he learnt about the ancient tradition of travelling – for a period of at least one day longer than his three-year apprenticeship – to learn new skills and become a master carpenter.

This ancient twist on backpacking around the world appealed to him.

He decided to join the travelling craftsman tradition which originally extended across Europe and now has meeting points in nearly every country. “It started with the stonemasons in the 13th and 14th centuries

who travelled from village to village in search of work, gaining a diverse range of skills along the way,” says Michael. Even 200 years ago, this was still a popular lifestyle choice. Today, less than 1% of carpenters in Germany choose the travelling option. “I am the first person from my region to make the journey in 120 years,” he explains (in pretty impressive English considering he didn’t speak the language when he left home a little over three years ago).

The eye-catching black outfit Michael sports is the time-honoured travelling carpenter’s uniform, which is steeped in tradition. “Everything is made for our trade. The cuffs of our sleeves roll to the inside so sawdust doesn’t get in, the bottoms of the pants are wide enough to cover our shoes, and the many pockets allow us to carry lots of things,” he explains. Each part of the attire is symbolic: “The buttons represent how many hours and days you work, and the black tie is only worn by the travelling craftsmen.” >

Michael had to scour the wetlands around his village for the perfect walking stick needed for his journey – its spiral design was created by vines wrapping around the soft wood for years as it grew. And he packs light: all of his worldly possessions are wrapped in traditional cloth and tied to a long stick in two bundles reminiscent of the Aussie swagman.

There are a few rules: “We aren’t allowed to have cell phones, be married or have children. We can’t have any debt or be over 30. We can’t go closer to our village than 50km, and we must start our journey without money and return without money – but we can earn money along the way,” he explains. Each journeyman keeps a diary to verify his travels and this develops into a book of reference that is used for a lifetime.

I can’t help but ask if there is any religious or cult-like basis to the organisation. He laughs. “No, but we do all of our business in a private room and there are a few initiation rituals, like this earring,” he says of the piece of jewellery I had thought was his one tribute to modern times. “The ‘golden nail’ is given to you so if you die on your journey, you can pay for your funeral and leave this planet without debt.” Michael received his earring 22 countries and over three years ago. “I could go home, but I’m happy to keep travelling and learning.”

When he is working he is not allowed to teach others: his focus is to learn something from everyone. “If you stay in one region, you tend to build in the same way. But when you go to different areas, you learn

new skills. Nature has a big impact on how you build a house, and many styles have developed over hundreds of years to suit differing climates.”

On his true-life adventure, Michael has relied on trust and his ability to adapt to new situations. In Japan, he and a fellow journeyman got lost and had to walk for two days through the forest to reconnect with the freeway. They started hitchhiking, and a man picked them up and took them to his home. “His neighbour spoke English, and explained why we looked so funny in our journeymen’s clothes! It turned out that he was a member of a big community spread around Japan that built traditional houses and Japanese baths – I worked with him for three months.”

Michael encourages others to combine their passions with travel.

“I’ve met a lot of people who are carpenters or architects but they are travelling the world doing fruit-picking. They are afraid to work at their profession in a foreign country, and that’s a pity.”

Michael’s journey has been a life-changing experience in many ways. “It makes you more open minded when you travel through countries and meet and work with new people. There are millions of ways to live your life – in Japan, Australia, Jamaica – everywhere there is the good and the bad side of life. This experience won’t make me restless but I won’t be going back to live in Germany. I thought I’d settle down in New Zealand, but then I came to Australia...

the making of an artist What makes an artist? Are they born? Are they made? Is it nature or nurture? Or is it more a case of luck and location?

Sue Gilford now lives at Agnes in Gippsland, but her roots are in bayside Melbourne and a rich artistic tradition.

“We were living in Beaumaris in a very old Tudor-style house.

When my father grew up there, there were trams … and bushfires at the bottom of Cromer Road.” Heidelberg School artists such as Charles Condor had painted the coastal views here in crisp sunlight, and later Clarice Beckett came to create her smoky, dreamy nocturnes. “The Jorgensens (the art dynasty that went on to establish Montsalvat in Eltham) lived next door. They used to hand us red jellies in a glass across the back fence,” Sue recalls.

Sue Gilford inherited this Melbourne artistic legacy. It manifested itself both in early environmental activism to save the foreshore from suburban encroachment, and in a desire to paint. “I started painting when I was a little girl of eight. I went to Beaumaris Art School – Mum stuck me in there to keep me happy. I was born to paint. I would go to the shopping strip at The Concourse on Saturdays and have little exhibitions. People would come and watch and I would paint elephants. I would dream of elephants,” she says.

“I remember sitting on the stairwell looking at books and thinking that I’d like to draw what I saw.” What she produced was moody stuff, dark and sombre. “I wasn’t a surrealist as such, but I like stuff with an edge, with a double entendre to it. I was still quite young when I had these thoughts – pre-teenage – but I had no one to talk to about it.”

“At school I was the naughty person. I’d cause grief. I put glue in all the gloves,” she says. “One of our chooks died, and I took it into my coast 28

bedroom. I took everyone’s sandshoes home and put them in Mum’s cupboard, and once I took a girl’s lunch money and bought everyone a cream bun. That girl later became my sister-in-law.”

Sue left school and studied art at night, applying for courses at RMIT and the National Gallery. “And I used to work for my father, who was a clothing manufacturer. We’d be sewing for other companies in our factory in Richmond. I’d go in there to work and then onto night school. It was unusual, living in Beaumaris (which was very Anglo-Saxon) and mixing with the Greek ladies. That was really a time when Richmond was full of Italians and Greeks. But they invited me to their homes and I learned all about Greek coffee.”

Art was still beckoning. “The inner drive was there, no matter what was happening,” she says. “I applied to the National Gallery art school.

I was 17, and very naive. They told me, ‘You need to learn more about drawing’. So I went out and looked at art by people like Francis Bacon and Jackson Pollock… huge works and extreme abstraction.

I realised that if I was going to get on, I’d have to paint like that.”

Until then, Sue had been drawing things like her mum’s washing machine. “It was basic homey stuff – the things around me. But then I got to art school and there was all this chucking paint around. It was the time of the Vietnam War. I was listening to the music and going to the moratoriums and listening to Germaine Greer. That was an eye-opener.”>

She took up printmaking (some of her linocuts are in the National Gallery collection) and etching, and undertook a variety of courses at Chisholm and then the Victorian College of the Arts. Thereafter, she hit the lecturing circuit, teaching painting at the SA Institute of Art. (“I rode my bike from Adelaide to Melbourne.”) “But,” admits Sue, “I wanted to paint. I didn’t want to teach. Also, I suffer from a huge cringe factor when I’m in the mainstream city-based art community: I was hopeless.”

A keen bushwalker, she had often visited Wilson’s Promontory and found it a perfect escape from the city. “I loved the environment. My partner Charles and his family had built mud-brick houses around Gippsland. And so I decided to live here in 1989. It was a spur-of-themoment thing. You make crazy decisions, but I’ve never questioned it.”

Why Agnes? “I have no idea: it happened to be cheap. My original idea was to get a job in the Bonlac milk factory at Toora!”

Sue soon immersed herself in the local arts community, helping create murals at schools in Port Welshpool and Toora. She also got into helping the Red Cross – soup is her speciality. And she speaks enthusiastically about artworks involving the local indigenous community. This work with the local Aboriginal people knits in with her now-preferred medium … pyrography, which involves burning patterns onto timber.

“Aboriginal artists do a lot of pyrography, too, and it’s also found in Japan and the Pacific Islands. In fact there’s a very strong tradition of pyrography in native cultures throughout the world: it’s like tattooing timber.” Sue is especially fond of working with gourds that she grows and dries. Her next big project is to complete some panels for the information desk at the new Parks Victoria Visitors Centre at the Prom.

For this job she will be drawing on her love of the local birdlife. She frequently visits the Toora bird-hide, and loves the solitude of the mudflats there and at Welshpool. “I ingest what I ‘see’ out there in the world and I try to interpret it in my art.”

Bathed in glory Amanda Drennan is so much more than the sum of her parts. She may have been born with just one leg, but Amanda’s effervescent personality catches you off guard. The wide-eyed beauty talks like she swims – she’s fast, animated and engaged, and you quickly realise why this 23-year-old has 1,000 friends on Facebook.

She credits her no-fuss island upbringing on six acres near the Cowes Golf Club with her disregard for her disability. Her parents – her father was a cattle farmer and mother a nurse for 29 years at Warley Hospital – encouraged their second daughter to be active and athletic, and to consider herself as capable as anyone else. “Growing up, I never noticed that I only had one leg, because I was doing what everyone else was doing. I was out there running around the oval, no ‘buts’, no excuses. That’s how I was brought up.”

Amanda talks about her missing limb with wonderful humour and not a trace of angst. ‘Peggy’ is the name she has given to her prosthetic leg - a blue titanium pole with a plastic foot whose toes she often paints with nail polish .

She laughs as she recalls how her older sister once picked her up and tried to use her prosthetic as a weapon against a boy on the playground. “We had a lot of fun with the fake leg when we were younger. Kelly chased this boy who had hit her with a ball, swinging me at him, trying to hit him with the leg.”

At six, Amanda began swimming, and admits she was the struggler in her class.

But a little bit of bribery went a long way. “I was so bad at first. My parents had to bribe me. If I could complete a lap, I could get a Freddo Frog. It took me three attempts.”

To compensate for the missing leg, she built her upper body strength, developed a steady kick rhythm and kept her hips evenly rotating through the water. By age 11 she had competed in state swimming championships against able-bodied competitors, and at 14 she headed to Argentina for the World Championships in the S9 category (for above-the-knee or below-the-elbow amputees), winning gold in a medley team full of fellow rookies.

What held Amanda back from excelling further was the absence of a local training facility, with the Cowes pool closing over winter. “Sometimes, I’d go jetty-jumping at Cowes, or we’d travel after school to Warragul, which took about an hour and a half. In the end, it was too far to go”.

So, at 15, she left home to begin boarding at St Catherine’s School in Toorak, moving from a quiet farmhouse to a National Trust-listed Victorian mansion.

The chatty brunette admits rivalry between the ‘boarders’ and ‘day girls’ was rife, with the live-ins envied for their majestic ‘Harry Potter’-style residence, catered meals and the opportunity to stumble out of bed and into class.>

In preparation for the Commonwealth Games and the Paralympics in Athens, the teen began training six to seven times a week at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and Aqualink in Nunawading, enduring gruelling two-hour sessions swimming 6km a day alongside Australian swimming stars like Matt Welsh.

Local boaties like John Dickie of Wildlife Cruises helped Amada plan the circumnavigation. She would swim in a TXU Tri Suit with wool fat around her neck, in a custom-built shark cage attached to a tug boat.

To get the right currents and channels, she’d have to swim in deep water about one kilometre from the shoreline.

The work paid off and she picked up a bronze medal in the freestyle relay.

After two days of carbo-loading on pasta, chocolate and coke, and a ceremonious departure from the San Remo jetty, Amanda set off on 16 March 2011, with water temperatures of between 11 to 13 degrees.

She quickly realised the magnitude of her task, with swells at Woolamai smashing into her and lifting the cage out of the water.

For the Beijing Paralympics, she intensified her commitment to the sport by moving to Germany to train. She made the team to reach her second Paralympics, but wrestled with the mental side of competition, as her coach insisted on a serious line of attack – no talking, no laughing, no social interaction – which set the bubbly 20-year-old on edge.

“He said, ‘I want you to go out there with tunnel vision, and not talk to anyone.’ Normally I’m so sociable, but I didn’t even look at my parents or the team, because that’s what I’d been told to do.”

The result was a badly botched race where she hit the wall with her bottom on the tumble turn, and missed the final despite being ranked fourth for the backstroke event.

“It was so rough. I was thrown from one side of the cage to the other, and I had cuts and bruises all over my body. When I got back on the boat, I was so seasick I threw up all over the crew’s feet.”

Words of encouragement, blaring music from the boat, and a pod of playful dolphins kept her motivated. “The whole time I was swimming I kept seeing shadows under the cage, but I just kept telling myself they were rocks and seaweed.”

Most days she swam close to 20km, and was in the water from 11am to 6pm with a break for lunch.

Still, she’s philosophical about falling short. With the closure of the Warley Hospital affecting her beloved hometown, ousting nurses like her mother and compromising the health of locals, she turned her attention to something bigger than personal accolades.

“On day five, when I could see the jetty, I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to do this’. The boys started playing ‘Rock Lobster’, and just as we came in the dolphins re-appeared. It was just so special. Everyone was so happy. We were all dancing and singing in the shark cage.”

Her idea, concocted one day with friends at Smiths Beach, was to swim around Phillip Island, a 66km circuit through the treacherous, sharkinfested waters of Bass Strait, to raise money and awareness for the island’s medical plight.

It was later at the celebration dinner that Amanda was told that a surfer had seen a Great White shark take a fish out of the water off Woolamai on the day she’d been swimming there. But the fear was forgotten when they tallied the results of the ‘Swim for Life’ project: the event had attracted mainstream media coverage and, with Olympus as the major sponsor, $41 000 had been raised to put towards a medical facility for the island.

In preparation, she began long-distance training in the pool, sharing a lane with Michael Klim who, like Ian Thorpe and Geoff Huegill, is on a comeback trail to make the London Olympics. Once a week she also braved the waters around Black Rock with group swims led by John van Wisse, brother of marathon ocean swimmer, Tammy van Wisse.

What spooked Amanda on those bayside trawls were the creaking underwater noises made by the Cerberus shipwreck. “It was so freaky.

The wreck moves and you can hear the chains. The first time I heard it I was behind the pack, but you can imagine how quickly I sprinted up to the rest of the group!”

Amanda now lives in Beaumaris and is focussed on completing her Chinese Medicine studies, but hopes her historic swim will be the launching pad for the provision of wider health services on Phillip Island.

“Swim for Life wasn’t just about swimming around the island. It was about raising money and awareness for a 24-hour medical facility. Now it’s up to local parliamentarians Greg Hunt and Ken Smith to see where they go with it.”

Dogga Luke has ruled Phillip Island’s waves since the late 1950s.

Dogga [Graham] Luke reminds me of one of my favourite childhood TV characters – Catweazle. He’s wiry, mysterious, and a little magical as he stares into my eyes and recites “poetry, mate”. He’s even got a poetry CD he made with local musician Simon Curphey. After a recent late-night recording session, he went for his first surf in six years – aged 70.

on the island. Because we’d bodysurfed, we knew the beaches; but once we got onto Mals, we started looking for reef breaks – and we actually discovered a lot of them. Dave Fincher and I used to check out the Cat Bay bombie and Right Point, Left Point. Flynns [Reef ] didn’t have any road – we just used to bush-bash to get in.”

We’re sitting in Dogga’s daughter’s café in Cowes to talk about a lifetime of surfing, but we haven’t really touched on the topic yet. The fire that one of Phillip Island’s pioneering boardriders once felt for the waves has now tempered into enthusiasm for travel, poetry and kayaking. “I also play bowls,” – he cracks up laughing. “I’m the odd man out at the bowls club!”

“There were no wetsuits: we just wore footy jumpers, and they were hopeless – they acted like a Coolgardie safe once the wind blew on them, mate! We were all under a misapprehension about those footy jumpers!” he reveals. “No leg-ropes either; you had to be able to swim, mate. Eight was a crowd – but there weren’t a lot of local guys out there. They were playing football and cricket – and never got into surfing – so I surfed with Melbourne guys like Dave Fincher and Klemmy [Terry Klemm]. I used to surf Scott Dylan boards, then I met Klemmy and he just always knew what I wanted.”

Dogga is a true island local, born and bred. “I’ve spent all my life on Phillip Island. My grandparents had 80 acres on the Cowes main road and we milked cows, grew chicory, that sort of thing.” Graham become ‘Dogga’ because he was always at the footy supporting the local team, shouting ‘Carn the Dogs!’

Any favourite childhood memories? His eyes brighten and I feel a poem coming… ”Well, my granddaughter recently asked what it was like when I was at school, so I wrote her a little poem – do you want me to recite it?” Of course! He leans close, bright eyes shining: Let me wander back through time again, to a green uncrowded shady lane To my back door of nursery rhymes, to Sunday school and church bell chimes The world I’d buy for just six pence in those days of youthful innocence Barefoot down the dusty track – ‘g’day Mary, g’day Jack’.

I long for lazy summer days – Strzelecki Ranges, shimmering haze The drone of pollen-laden bees, a heavily-scented summer breeze Ride to school once more on the milkman’s cart, shyly giggle if the horse does fart!

Milk cans jangling up Church St Hill, magpies warbling loud and shrill Childhood sweetheart at schoolyard gate, better hurry, don’t be late And through the distant maze of time, back into my desk I climb.”

“I thought that was the easiest way to explain it to her,” he says, leaning back in satisfaction.

It was a two-year stint at school on the Mornington Peninsula that led him to surfing. “We used to go to Portsea and bodysurf – there was no surfing then. When the Americans came out for the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, they bought Malibus. We saw one of the lifesavers riding one, and I said, ‘Mate, we better get hold of them!”

So, Dogga stepped onto a longboard in 1959. “We surfed everywhere

Dogga’s favourite break “always and forever” is Woolamai. “It’s the best beach-break in the world – and I’ve seen a lot of them. It’s just the setup – the banks. If Woolamai and all the banks are working, you can really spread out – it goes from Magiclands to the board club and that’s a lot of beach, mate. It’s very Australian – we like our space!”

Things gradually changed from walking through fields and discovering new breaks – surfing became a scene. “More people started surfing – it got really popular. In the mid sixties, there was the Beach Boys and all the music – it was a real cult, and everybody got caught up in it. There was a big meeting in the Isle of Wight Hotel and we thought we’d start a board club: I was a founding member back in 1963.” It’s said to be Australia’s oldest continuously-running club.

Friends from the board club came back from overseas raving about the good time they’d had, so he and four mates took off overseas for a surfing adventure. In 1966 you travelled to Europe via ship, so they got off at the Suez Canal, and caught the train to Germany to buy a Kombi van. “A taxi driver said, ‘Look, boys, you can buy a two- or three-yearold Mercedes cheaper than a Kombi – so we travelled in style, mate.

We drove that Mercedes all around Europe – did all the Eastern Bloc countries. We were away for two years. We surfed in England, France, Spain, Portugal and Morocco – when we got to Morocco, they didn’t know what surfboards were! Mate, travel is the best education you can get: I recommend it.”

Dogga returned to Phillip Island aged 28, with “a different attitude altogether”. The girlfriend he’d lived with for five years issued an ultimatum: ‘Either marry me or get out of my life!’“So we got married and had two lovely girls. We don’t live together anymore, but we are the best of mates.” >

The couple ran a health food shop called ‘Mother’s Pantry’ in the main street, but five years was enough. “Took over me life, mate! I had mates coming in from the surf and I’d been working for 14 hours standing at a hotplate and they’d say, ‘Surf’s going off’ and I’d say, ‘Thanks, boys!’ I was in jail.”

Released from his ‘jail’, Dogga continued working as a landscape gardener, enjoying being outdoors and in his own headspace. He now considers himself ‘semi-retired’ and likes nothing more than paddling around in his kayak checking out all the birdlife. “It’s sort of inspiration for writing poetry.” He also enjoys travelling around Australia in his van, catching up with old surfing mates and continuing the legacy surfing has left in his life.

In the sunset of his life, Dogga is philosophical. “I’m not religious, though the nuns at school tried to get to me! I used to wag and go down to the beach – that was my religious instruction. Mother Nature, that’s my religion – that’s what we go back to.”

Any waves left to surf? “All the guys are telling me to come back in the water, but there’s 30 or 40 guys trying to ride one wave, mate – get real!

No, I’m satisfied with the surfing I’ve done. At 70, you don’t really have a lot of things left to do – you’re sort of running out of time. So you’ve just gotta make the most of life, mate.”

NOWA NOWA NUDES An unlikely concept in an unlikely place in Gippsland, ‘Nowa Nowa Nudes’ is an art show not to be missed.

Like all the projects and ideas, exhibitions and festivals that shape the Gippsland psyche, this is an event that runs on pure creative adrenalin – and against all odds.

Now 10 years old, the Nudes grew from the tiniest of teams, a local love of life-drawing, curiosity (it’s where?), and a sheer passion to make it work in the smallest (and statistically poorest) of all towns. With no experience or infrastructure – simply a will to make art – Nowa Nowa aimed at putting on the best and most generous art show possible.

The mix, it seems, just worked. Just enough class – with all the best artists entering GREAT nudes (and everyone else just deciding to have a crack). Just enough community – to do the hard, behind-the-scenes work in a bemused kind of way. Just enough hanging space – to squeeze in the hundreds of entries. Just enough floor space – to squash in a huge opening night crowd. And just enough prize money to attract interest from everywhere. All set in one of the most beautiful blink-and-you-miss-it locations in East Gippsland.

Since the beginning, every show was potentially ‘The Last’. (‘We must be mad’.) And yet the lure of an event that so captures the imagination and affection of those that come is an irresistible thing to a small town.

Every year the reputation of the Nudes grew. And along the way ‘the nude’ became embedded in the Nowa Nowa landscape. Lakeside sculptures and the ‘ wood and metal assemblages beside the petanque piste’ all became part of the story. Even the bike rack outside the famous Mingling Waters Cafe has a tiny nude bursting from the metalwork. It’s those details that count when you’re trying to make a name for yourself.

As visiting photojournalist Ewen Bell recently wrote: ‘The Nudes is something to be celebrated, a treasure of Australian culture. The nexus of artistic talent, historical fascination and natural beauty is remarkable.

All this comes to life when the Nowa Nowa Nudes are on show. A few hundred people attending Nowa Nowa Nudes one year can lead to many thousands of people discovering East Gippsland for the rest of the year.’

‘everyone’ loves the Nudes, how could they resist? The possibility of a new generation of Gippslanders satisfying their cultural lust here at home was just too good to pass up.

“We’ve upped the prize money to $5,000 for the best ‘Nude Self Portrait’, plus $2,000 for the Tricia Allen Prize (Open Category), dedicated to one of our fabulous founding members, glass artist Tricia Allen, who we lost to Motor Neurone Disease last year. And we’ve just been offered an additional $2,000 acquisition prize by local art lover Vitalis Skuja who saw the Nudes online, and just wanted to support it,” explains Nudes curator Gary Yelen.

“Artists are really encouraged to consider the self-portrait as part of the Nude challenge. And remember, it’s not so much about exposing body parts: it’s really thinking more deeply about your ‘self’. So don’t get hung up on your body bits – that’s just one part of the work. Rather, embrace the challenge of ‘revealing your self’ in the most creative way, and in any media.”

And this year, thanks to Arts Victoria and the Regional Arts Fund via Regional Arts Victoria, there is not only the usual great exhibition of Nudes, but also BLOW UP, a parallel show of inflatable art and shadow puppetry with light and sound – all capturing local stories of the Nowa Nowa Nudes.

Artistic Director Catherine Larkins explains: ‘It’s an installation that will employ and mentor dozens of local and visiting artists to collaborate and create fabulous light-filled wobbly art to be on show over the Nudes weekend’.

And in case you didn’t know (and many don’t) Nowa Nowa nestles at the foot of its own mountain – Mt Nowa Nowa – with kilometres of world class mountain bike tracks, the zillion-year-old Nowa Nowa Gorge for excellent clambering, Lake Tyers for great fishing and kayaking, and the Colquhoun Forest and East Gippsland Rail Trail.

Over the Nude weekend there are early morning commercial cycling tours through the Colquhoun Forest, Artists @ Work in the Art Home, Show us Your Junk retro nude exhibition at the Collectables Shoppe, a weekend petanque play-off for friendly teams (byo boules), and dinner and music ‘til late on Friday and Saturday.

It’s a quintessential East Gippsland event – a great relaxed vibe in a special place that most of the world still hasn’t discovered.

When Phillip Island vet nurse Rochelle Thorpe went trekking to conquer the mountains of Nepal, little did she know that a chance meeting with human rights advocate Indira Ranamagar would send her on a completely different journey . . .

It’s a chilly grey day when I meet up with Rochelle at her Sunset Strip home on Phillip Island. It’s about as far as you can imagine from the mountain country of the Himalayas, but it’s here I meet the warm and dynamic Nepalese activist who has inspired her. Arriving only moments earlier from the airport, Indira is full of energy and enthusiasm as she warmly shakes my hand. Dressed in a tracksuit and showing no sign of jetlag, she smiles and disappears, only to reappear moments later in her national dress.

It made me realise that these really were the most vulnerable people in the world.” She decided that she would make it her mission to help them. “Many children are born in prison and grow up there. They don’t get a chance to go to school, or even go outside the prison, and that makes me very sad. It makes me think back to when I was a child and how I felt about being unable to go to school.”

Through a series of chance meetings, Rochelle was introduced to Indira at an orphanage in Kathmandu. “I was just inspired by what she was doing to help children, and I wanted to get involved,” she says.

Hearing that she was on her way to Australia to attend a conference, Rochelle sprang into action to organise a fundraising event and some much-deserved relaxation on Phillip Island.

Indira founded PA Nepal (Prisoners Assistance Nepal) and though it is such a worthy cause, she still fights against prejudice and misunderstanding in her vital work. “Many people tell me I’m mad!

Why am I supporting criminals? In society’s eyes it’s not good to help those in prison. Sadly, some people don’t recognise the plight of these children,” she says. “But I knew in my heart that they were the innocent and forgotten victims and they needed my support. I felt I had to bring a smile back to their faces.”

As we sit around the kitchen table, Indira tells me about her life working with vulnerable children and their families throughout Nepal.

Her charity work began over 20 years ago. As a young girl growing up in a village in Eastern Nepal, Indira was given no formal education.

“It was a kind of gender discrimination – only boys were educated”, she says. Determined to learn, she taught herself by looking over her brother’s homework. When she finally got the chance to go to school, she made a vow to herself that somehow she would help women who were left behind in this way.

As a teenage student in Kathmandu, Indira met human rights activist and renowned writer Parijat, and was inspired by her welfare work

She studied at night to gain her degree and supported herself by teaching. All her spare time was spent teaching the children and volunteering. She started talking to the prisoners about their children, and while it was vital to keep families together, she knew that the youngsters needed time outside to give some hope and normality to their lives. “Some of the parents agreed, but it still was a difficult process, as many children suffered from psychological issues, and people feared caring for them.” She found many of the prisoners were illiterate and even unsure of why they were in prison. “Many were desperately poor, and needed to work to support their families.>

They had been doubly-victimised, by criminals who took advantage of them, and by the system.” She acknowledges that even after 20 years there are still problems, with children living on the streets and being trafficked and exploited.

She reflects, “In the beginning I cared for two children in my small room. Now, with support from all over the world, PA Nepal cares for over 300 young people. I live a very simple life and I still have seven children sharing my room.” Indira believes that children, where possible, should be with their families, and she works hard to support them so they can stay together. “I have seen too many young children being affected by the separation from their mothers,” she says. She has created different programs to educate, support, train and empower the prisoners to create a better future for themselves and their offspring. She says, “You can see the transformation in the children when they start to get an education – there is hope and possibility for the first time in their lives. This in turn inspires parents to reform, as it gives them hope for the future, too.”

Her main motivation is to bring families together and keep them together. When this is not possible, Indira will find a place for the children in one of her centres, whose teams work hard to create a homely environment and encourage the children to care for each other, like in an extended family. “The older children look after the younger ones so they get individual attention, like they would from a brother or sister. That’s the kind of ‘family’ bond we are trying to create.” While they do employ staff, many of the older children who have graduated from college will come back and teach in the school.

“Our children are already very smart. They can speak and write in English, but we want to go further and teach them to be leaders so they can eventually take over from me when I’m gone.”

They organisation aims to be self-sustainable to continue to assist vulnerable children. “We’ve invested in farming, and now we have some cows and buffalos. We are teaching the children organic farming practices, and giving them basic skills, like how to produce cheese from milk.” Nepal relies on tourism and agriculture, so the centres try to provide the children with skills useful in both areas. An avid mountain-bike rider, Indira is also teaching the older ones how to be mountain-bike tour guides. “I want to be a role model for them.”

The children also learn skills such as cooking, sewing, hospitality and massage therapy. “Sometimes there is a stigma attached to the children that grow up in prison: we are trying to encourage an entrepreneurial streak so they can start their own business to support themselves.”

“You can see the transformation in the children when they start to get an education – there is hope and possibility for the first time in their lives.”

So what keeps her going? “When I look back and see how many children we have helped to get an education, and the opportunities this has created for them, it gives me hope and keeps me going.”

The organisation now has seven branches including 3 schools and four children’s homes. “We don’t get any government support, so we have to depend on charity. People come and visit our organisation, volunteer their time, or help in fundraising. I am always trying to raise awareness and funds to look after these vulnerable children and their families.”

life in the glen…

Glen Forbes is a picturesque address in Gippsland’s Bass Hills.

Originally known as ‘Clematis’, Glen Forbes is a farming community 80km southeast of Melbourne on the banks of the Bass River. The town lies at the base of the rolling Bass Hills, which were once covered in rainforest.

In the 1870s, it was the site of the Bass River sawmill. Workers lived in tents surrounded by blacksmiths’ shops, farriers’ forges and a store. A tramway took timbers from the surrounding hills to Queensferry, then on to Grantville Jetty to be transported to Melbourne and further afield to Canada and America.

The railway line and station were constructed in 1910 to transport coal from Wonthaggi on the Nyora-Wonthaggi line and operated until the early 1970s. Remnants of the heritage-listed railway station and bridge still remain.

The Glen Forbes Primary School – S.S. 4008, was built on an acre of land that was donated for the purpose by a local farmer and opened in 1919. Over 35 students were once enrolled, but numbers declined and the school closed in the early 1970s. Spensley Street Primary School in Clifton Hill acquired the site for use as a school camp. The quaint Glen Forbes Uniting Church is perched on the hill above the town. It reluctantly closed about two years ago due to lack of attendance.

After World War 1, the Shire and the Country Roads Board decided to construct a road up the hill known as ‘The Gorge’ to provide easier and safer access to the farms on the hills and to foster community activities in the town centre. It was a difficult task: returned diggers, local farmers and labourers cleared a track, then dug, drilled and blasted through the rock of the Gorge. The general store used to be the heart of the town of Glen Forbes.

It was a place where the community gathered and information was shared: it was the glue of the community. When it closed down 12 years ago it left a hole in the town, but the community picked itself up and carried on.

In 1987, Melbourne businessman David Blum made a lifestyle move to Glen Forbes, exchanging manufacturing for farming. His first impressions were of a community that was fragmented.

“The Glen Forbes Recreation Reserve Committee had been started by Evelyn Heywood, the lady who owned the shop,” explains David, who is now president. “Her vision was to reinstate the tennis court across the road. She unfortunately passed away, but we continued on.”

David rallied the troops and got the Committee back in action. Through regular working bees, they developed a playground, constructed a BBQ shelter and have recently built toilet facilities at the recreation reserve surrounding the tennis courts – they’ve spent $25,000 so far.

Their dream, like that of the founder of the Committee, is to redevelop the tennis court that was built in 1952 for use by the community. “I have a young son. When he gets a little older, it will be important for

him to have very local facilities such as tennis courts,” says David. Glen Forbes has a wide cross-section of residents – from the original farmers through to newer, younger families who are taking advantage of the smaller five-acre properties around the town.

David hopes that the Committee maintains and builds on the community spirit of Glen Forbes. “I want local people to be able to get together a bit more – modern life is so fast and busy, and people travel to shop and visit family. I wanted the Glen Forbes community to enjoy each other’s company a little more.”

The committee hosts two community get-togethers each year: a barbie in February at the Recreation Reserve, and a Christmas in July in the region’s last remaining timber mill behind the old store. This year’s was the Committee’s second Christmas in July event. “There’s a tiny charge, and volunteers do all the set-up, cooking and serving. We borrow tables and chairs from around the district. The events create a rapport amongst the locals – even ex-residents travel back to be part of the fun.”

“I like Glen Forbes because it’s semi-rural, not far from the city, and the roads are really good. It’s the best of both worlds.”

There’s no end to what the team at Moonya in Wonthaggi can achieve. They recently set their minds to an event in support of a National Disability Insurance Scheme, and topped the state with over 320 people standing up in support of the cause.

People have always powered Moonya. Originally established in an old rented hall by six families in the early 1950s, the service now cares for more than 120 people with a disability and employs 54 staff (around half have a disability). These people are just the centre of the large beating heart that is Moonya.

The recent ‘DisabiliTea’ event was a show of support from family, friends, community members and celebrities who had all gathered to stand up for the rights of people with a disability. Angus McLaren of Packed to the Rafters fame, Olympic champion Linda Ryan and MP Russell Broadbent were a few of the special guests who came to champion the cause – and did it with pleasure.

The event aimed to foster a network of supporters across Australia to work together to improve the support systems available for people with a disability, their families and carers. “Most Australians would be surprised to know how long people with a disability have to wait for essential equipment such as wheelchairs, or how little support their families and carers receive,” says Bernard Hanily of Moonya Community Services. “The National Disability Insurance Scheme will change all that and ensure that people are provided with the equipment, therapy and support they need to get on with their lives.”

And the team at Moonya are delighted that the Gillard Labor Government recently announced that it will start work immediately on measures that will build the foundations for the national scheme.

Moonya’s mission is simple To fulfil the aspirations for life of people with a disability – and community support is vital. Through memberships, donations from the community and a range of fundraising events, Moonya generates funds for its vital work.

Reclaimed timbers are yielding new life in the hands of craftsmen Mark Davis and Nick Kershaw.

It’s hard to imagine that the beautiful timbers in the handcrafted pieces of furniture made by Finding the Grain could just as easily have ended up in the tip.

In this neat factory in Cowes, miracles happen every day. Old, discarded building materials destined for landfill are uncovered and given new life.

On the bench today is a clear demonstration of the yin and yang that is recycled wood: a pile of dirty old boards on one side and the recentlyrevealed, beautifully milled hardwood on the other. Nick and Mark have been working for days to uncover this inner beauty.

You can’t buy timbers like these any more: there simply isn’t the time for the trees to grow, and the forests they came from have disappeared.

“You just can’t tell how old this tree was – it could be a 500-year-old gum cut down 150 years ago,” says Mark with reverence. “There’s no greater thing than a tree standing in the forest. And anything that has been on the planet for that long has a certain amount of energy to it,” he adds.

Mark and Nick worked together in the building industry for years before recently combining their passion for recycled materials into Finding the Grain. “Nick came to me – we were both ready to do something together. I’d always worked for myself before,” says Mark, who grew up on Phillip Island and has never liked working with new timber.

Nearly all of their raw materials come from local demolition jobs. “Rob at Riedau Technologies basically pulls each house apart by hand for us. In the past, houses would have been crushed by a big excavator and put in the tip. It took a while for him to understand the value in the process, but now he sees what we create and he’s keen to do his bit,” Mark says.

The majority of the wood is Victorian, and the older houses are pretty much guaranteed to reveal timbers from Gippsland such as blue gum and stringy bark.

Nick admits: “When we pick up a load, we never know what’s going to come out of it. I don’t like even a stick going to waste – I’m a bit of a hoarder. Even the offcuts are made into chopping boards.”>

“We want to produce the best work we can, and to make quality that will last forever” “Our tastes are different, and we both offer our opinions on each piece,” says Nick, who loves collecting the timber. We’re now building new houses using recycled timbers as much as possible, including windowframes and doors, and milling up all the decking, flooring and cladding.”

It’s time-consuming work – it can take three days just to prepare the wood for one table – but it’s cheaper for the planet. “You can’t go to the hardware and get this type of wood – it’s old-growth, rough-sawn timber being given another chance at life,” says Mark.

The boys will not use anything unless they know its source, and they need to know it’s fully recycled and ethical. “Unless we know the origin of the timber, we won’t take it: we are trying to be as honest as we can.

We know where every stick is taken from, and it’s labelled in this shed – people can come in and see it for themselves,” says Nick. A recent job tested their mettle: they’d never used merbau before because of the ethical implications, but they received timber from a house frame that was all merbau and decided to give it another life.

The Finding the Grain philosophy is all about quality. “We want to produce the best work we can, and to make quality that will last forever,” says Mark.

They especially don’t want to be perceived as making only rustic furniture just because they work with recycled timbers. Their furniture is stylish, sleek and contemporary – it just happens to be made out of recycled timber with a unique story to tell. As well as furniture, they do interior fit-outs and jobs in the ‘too hard basket’ for many other builders.

On a lush green hill overlooking the swirling waters of Bass Strait stand three pioneers of hope for Australia’s future. Brendan Condon, Mike O’Mullane and Tosh Szatow survey the site that will soon begin its transformation into a unique sustainable housing project.

The Ecovillage aims to be Australia’s first operationally zero-carbon residential development.

Over nine years ago, Brendan and Mike embarked on their journey to develop a lifestyle option with a difference. Like all journeys into the unknown, it’s been full of unexpected twists and turns, and now the destination is in full sight. Cape Paterson Ecovillage is the first and only of its kind in Australia and its zero-emission concept is even quite rare internationally.

“We doggedly held on to the concept for nine years because we see how critically important living, breathing examples of sustainable, cost-effective, low-carbon living are,” says Brendan passionately. He admits that he and fellow director Mike O’Mullane were not prepared

for the hurdles they have faced – they thought that compromising big profits for big ideals would be an easy sell.

In May, the State Government gave the village the green light. Land release and construction will begin in early 2012. “We are making a red-hot attempt at developing a functional, zero-carbon housing project,” says Brendan. It’s a development with a difference. The village concept has been fully developed to integrate solutions across biodiversity, sustainable architecture, onsite clean-energy production, electric vehicles powered onsite, water efficiency, on-site food production, community development and promotion of an active lifestyle.

This equates to a coastal community of 220 lots, with residents living amongst restored wildlife habitat including wetlands. An active lifestyle is encouraged through provision of walking and cycling paths for a community that uses clean energy generated on-site, in stylish, efficient houses that capture their own water. including a workshop, garden and café are integral to the project.

As permanent residents establish themselves, it is anticipated that opportunities for involvement in local enterprise will emerge and grow. This may include on-site management of energy services, a workshop that will re-purpose tired goods for the local community and beyond, and food services that draw on produce from household and community gardens and local farmers.

It may sound a little futuristic, but ironically many of the solutions draw on historical, commonsense practices such as good orientation of homes and access to community facilities – simple practices that are often forgotten in modern developments.

The Ecovillage team started with the assumption that achieving this standard of sustainability in housing would generate costly up-front premiums. They were prepared to share this cost with residents to achieve a legacy. In 2010, Brendan assembled a skilled team of

builders and designers and, for six painstaking months, worked through the economics of building 220 sustainable houses. Leading sustainable house designers were identified and consulted. Some of the world’s largest solar panel producers were approached to quote for clean energy generation for all houses and also electric vehicles, to future proof the project against rising energy, water and oil costs.

The team grew to include Sustainability Victoria, Master Builders and Alternative Technology Associations, and the Moreland Energy Foundation. The study drew on input from talented local Bass Coast builders TS Constructions, and designers Beaumont Concepts, winners of the National HIA Greensmart home award for 2010 and 2011. And then came the Eureka moment. The team found that a combination of rapidly reducing costs for sustainability features such as solar panels, combined with good design, reduced the upfront premium. When the running costs of the houses were calculated over the life of a mortgage, Tosh and Brendan explain that even with conservative scenarios for future energy, water and oil costs, the style >

of housing and lifestyle options offered will put residents way ahead financially compared with conventional housing options.

Tosh completed the final detailed analysis for the project, using his background as a researcher and advocate for local energy systems. He recently left the CSIRO and joined the development team to realise his dream of demonstrating the effectiveness of local clean energy. He believes we have already reached a tipping point where, if done right, clean energy can be more affordable than the alternative.

Brendan is quick to point out this is not a commune or even an ‘alternative’ development – his ambition is to ‘mainstream’ the core elements of the project. He expects it will attract a diverse community of like-minded people that are seeking low-cost, low-impact living in an integrated community that supports rewarding lifestyles.

“People of all ages have already registered their interest in the village, including many locals, and people from all walks of life from doctors to tradies and everything in between,” he says.

first aid for little penguins On average, 133 sick and injured Little Penguins are cared for by Phillip Island Nature Parks each year. In August, the Nature Park officially opened their new Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. This state of the art facility is a triumph for the cause and Victoria’s only specialised seabird rehabilitation facility.

Wildlife rehabilitation has evolved over the past 20 years at the Nature Park. In the mid 1980s, a small garage-sized facility was used to house and care for the sick and injured penguins the rangers encountered with the main goal of releasing the penguins back into the wild as soon as possible. The facility developed along with the team’s knowledge and expertise in treating wildlife, especially injured seabirds.

Over four times the size of the original hospital footprint, the new Centre can accommodate up to 1,500 Little Penguins in the event of a major oil incident. In 2001, 438 penguins were affected by an oil spill off Phillip Island. The team used their expertise in washing and rehabilitating the penguins to ensure that 97% of oiled penguins were successfully released – a world-class result.

In August, the new Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre was officially opened

by Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith. Designed by local firm Beaumont Concepts with input from staff, it includes an indoor quarantine area, ‘transition’ room to assess oiled birds and triage as necessary, oiled penguin washing room, eight large indoor cages – separated from the main area to minimise disturbance and prevent disease transfer, storage room for oil spill response unit, two outdoor pens and two in-ground saltwater pools to rehabilitate penguins and other seabirds.

Current practices of treating oiled penguins include placing a ‘penguin jumper’ on the oiled bird to prevent them ingesting any oil before they are cleaned. They are then washed with mild detergents which also remove their natural waterproofing oils. The penguins must remain in care being fed and swum daily in a saltwater pool until their bodyweight and natural oils are replenished and they can be released back into the wild.

It’s hip to be waste aware...

For Freya Sibly, growing up with ‘hippy parents’ influenced her decision to work in waste management.

“My parents fed food scraps to the chooks and reused everything they could around their veggie patch and household,” said Freya Sibly, Administration Officer of Bass Coast Shire Council’s Waste Management Services team.

Freya remains passionate about reducing the amount of waste in her own home and has the same passion for running Council’s waste education programs. Freya works with David Owen, Waste Services Manager, and Peter Roberts, Waste Officer. Together they are the public face of Council’s waste management team.

“There’s a lot more to waste than just collecting rubbish bins,” explained David. “Education and encouraging behavioural change is now a large part of what we do.

The team also run public education programs about waste reduction and recycling.

The program Freya is most proud of is the ‘Public Place Recycling Campaign’ that saw 70 recycling bins installed in various Bass Coast main streets. Along with this, Freya worked with local school children to explain how to use the bins. She also ran a competition with the students to create a collage of recycled materials.

She has also given public talks about reducing waste at Mitchell House neighbourhood centre in Wonthaggi, where she says they now compost their food waste.

People still call the transfer station the ‘tip’ or ‘dump’, but nothing just gets left or dumped there anymore. Much of what is deposited is removed to be recycled or reused elsewhere,” said David.

The team all agree that educating others has made them think about their own actions.

“Green waste gets turned into mulch, recyclables go to Wonthaggi Recyclers and even something like an old mattress can be 90% recycled. It’s only what’s left that goes to land fill.”

“You can’t switch off from seeing the waste that people create around you”, said David. “I think about plastic bag use when I’m at the supermarket and notice rubbish dumped by the road when I drive around town.”

A key part of the team’s role is to manage the contracts for Council’s kerbside waste and recycling collection and the operations of the Rhyll, Wonthaggi and Inverloch waste transfer stations along with rehabilitation of land fill sites.

setting the stage for a greener life…

A deep commitment to sustainability and ‘keeping it local’ led Jo Sapir and partner Carl Sorger to Ecoliv for the build of their Inverloch retreat.

Melbourne-based Jo and Carl made the decision to buy in the seaside town of Inverloch in a snap – in fact on the very afternoon they were shown the modest 1960s beach house on a block sheltered by shady gums.

For over eight years they’d enjoyed their holiday home but knew it needed some changes. Years of soul-searching led to the decision to pull it down and start again with a completely green vision.

The couple undertook extensive research in Melbourne. “We saw a lot of good options, but then thought local would be best so we shifted our focus. When we found Ecoliv, all our dreams came true,” says Jo passionately. “The minute we walked into the office, we knew we were on a winner.”

Ecoliv is Wonthaggi-based and the concept offers a modern, minimalist aesthetic design that reflects an environmental consciousness. Customdesigned by award-winning Beaumont Concepts, Ecoliv fuses creative design with environmentally-friendly principles at an affordable price. The carefully researched designs offer a choice of standard pre-fabricated modules which can be configured to meet individual lifestyle needs. Each design achieves a minimum seven star thermal rating through the integration of sustainable features across all aspects such as energy and water usage, materials and design efficiency.

Jo and Carl’s important criteria were an environmentally-friendly approach to design and construction, and the certainty that none of coast 96

their beloved trees would be damaged or removed. “We wanted the house to fit inside the existing footprint, and to be on stumps to sit lightly on the site.”

Choosing a local company meant the couple could make the build their own. Working with Jess and Ashley from the Ecoliv team, they incorporated several changes into the modular design. “They have been really easy to work with, and very collaborative. We are confident that the house is going to respond to what we want.”

Walking around the site, we inspect the structure taking shape. The new layout mirrors the original beach-house design with kitchen/ living area and three bedrooms. Yet the contemporary design is a more functional interpretation with efficient use of space and light and the modern twist of two bathrooms. The rear of the new house opens up to the north, giving the kitchen and large exterior deck plenty of light.

At 12 squares all up, this is a modest home, and the environmental features of the Ecoliv design more than meet the couple’s desire for a green build. “The process has been easy – I’m confident that all of the research has been done by Ecoliv and we don’t have to worry, we can just relax and go with the flow,” says Jo. In a tribute to both partners’ backgrounds in theatre and staging, lighting will be a key feature. Carl has combined his theatre and electrical engineering skills to integrate LED and some funky lighting features through the design – like the stand-alone, fully-wired

“We are paying homage to the old house in several design features and custom finishes,” Jo explains. The fluted glass of the original 60s entry door is echoed in a window of double-glazed fluted glass – the last to roll off the machines as the product was discontinued. Jo describes the colour schemes as “tasteful noughties takes on the outrageous burnt oranges and wild blues of the original sixties fixtures”. The couple plans to furnish their new home with furniture they have already acquired, most of it collected from local garage sales over the years.

After All going well, the stage is set for the couple to be holidaying in their new home by summer. “I’m looking forward to having two bathrooms – not so much for privacy, but so that when we have visitors, we can all get out of the house before lunchtime to visit the markets and cafes we love on this coast!”

Ecoliv won the HIA GreenSmart National Home of the Year in 2010 and recently won the 2011 Building Designer Association of Victoria award for Best Environmentally Sustainable Residential Home.

How green is your garden?

From water restrictions to climate change, avid gardeners from all over Melbourne are rethinking their gardening strategies.

A certain frog got it wrong when he said, ‘It’s not easy being green!’ It actually is. Even the most difficult conditions allow for the creation of stunning low-maintenance gardens that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. James Ross shows us how to transform a challenging coastal site into a beautiful space for both humans and native animals.

Landscape designer James made a sea change to the Mornington Peninsula over 3 years ago, and his own plot of land provided the perfect opportunity to put his gardening principles to the test. The site sits on land historically known as ‘The Cups’ which draws its name from the unique undulating sand dunes that dominate the area. James cleared most of the site of its weedy Ti-tree and grasses, being careful to save some of the mature existing indigenous species of Leptospermum and Leucopogon. “I wanted to create a garden of local species that not only grew here long before European settlement, but that also look great and work within a designed landscape.”

The steep slope proved a challenge, but with the introduction of retaining walls and mass plantings, the sandy soil was stabilised.

Granite pathways and local limestone walls added another dimension to the clever design, and the limestone is echoed inside the house in a stunning fireplace. A long picture window frames the garden like a living artwork, allowing it to be appreciated from both inside and out.

“My garden is still very young, but we already have a resident Bluetongue lizard who has made it his home,” laughs James. Tree plantings of Allocasuarina verticillata and Moonah lanceolata will provide shade and structure, while low-growing species of Correa

alba, Stipa stipoides, Leucaphyta brownii, Carpobrotus rossii and Ozothamnus turbinatus that thrive in frontline coastal conditions will act as dune stabilisers. Once the garden is mature it will provide a wonderful habitat for local wildlife.

James specialises in innovative landscapes for coastal areas. The use of local raw and rustic materials adds a design element with a contemporary edge. When designing beautiful gardens for others, James meets his clients onsite to discuss their wish list, and what they want out of their garden. If the design quote is accepted, a full site analysis is undertaken, which includes mapping any existing structures and vegetations, and the taking of site levels, photos and soil samples.

Then I go away and create conceptual drawings, and later meet up with the client again to discuss any changes that need to be made.

Final drawings are then developed, with planting schedules and construction details ready for quoting. We create gardens that not only function and connect with the surrounding environment and architecture, but that our clients can enjoy,” he says.

a rollicking road trip from somers to flinders

We take a drive along the Mornington Peninsula’s secret side in a gorgeous Kombi named Mildred…

The Mornington Peninsula abounds with fab locations. I know many of them, but the sheltered bay side – from Somers to Flinders – is an area I’m not so familiar with. The total distance between the two towns is a mere 22 kilometres, but you could easily spend days exploring the fascinating beaches, walking tracks, coastal villages, wineries and galleries.

We start our day with a coffee and THE most amazing rosewater meringue overlooking the bay from the balcony at Somers General Store.

Originally known as Balnarring East, Somers was re-named in honour of the former Governor of Victoria who set up the local Lord Somers Camp. About 70 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, this hamlet dates back to the 1920s and today is a seaside suburb with a strong sense of community. The communities from Somers through to Flinders have worked hard to fight major development – and succeeded. Somers has a school, kindergarten, caravan park, yacht club, and a rescue facility whose craft are dispatched to help boaters in danger.

The store is the heart and meeting place of the community, its noticeboard proclaiming all the great goings-on of the town such as the annual Art Fair to raise funds for the primary school and the Between the Bays Music Festival held each February. >

Balnarring Balnarring Beach (also known as Tulum Beach) fronts onto the bay of Western Port. Every morning, majestic racehorses are trained on the beach and in the gentle waters of the bay. I’m even told that it’s not unusual for dolphins to swim amongst the horses’ legs.

If you travel along Cliff Road from the beach, you’ll reach a bushy headland where you can sit and take in views right along the coast and across to Phillip Island.

The bustling Balnarring Village is about two kilometres inland but has a relaxed, coastal feel. There is a wide range of shops providing everything from supermarket essentials through to fashion, art and homewares. I can see that Garry (our Kombi chauffeur) is slightly worried that we may not actually get into his awaiting Kombi as we browse the shops with gusto.

We grab our picnic basket crammed with gourmet goodies and board Mildred, the Niagara-blue deluxe Kombi which is one of a matching pair – George stayed at home today. Garry is kitted out in a fetching seventies-inspired outfit, and pumps up the groovy tunes as we glide out of the car park in total VW heaven.

Everyone in the car (which seats six in comfort) has a Kombi story as we travel along. It’s a very smooth ride and this has to be the most pristine Kombi I’ve ever been in!

The Mornington Peninsula is famous for its cool climate wines and there are some gems in this little corner. We pull into Bluestone Lane Vineyard for a spot of wine tasting. This family-operated vineyard also offers cellar-door sales and Italian-inspired cuisine in its Veraison Restaurant overlooking the vines. After a few tipples, the girls are happy to model the seventies-inspired costumes Garry has on board.

Merricks, Point Leo & Shoreham The journey to Flinders takes us past the small hamlets of Merricks, Point Leo and Shoreham. These tiny settlements are all set amongst rural backdrops and wineries with the bay as their main focus.

wetlands, which are highly prized by the community for their natural beauty, birds and wildlife. The one kilometre walking track is highly recommended.

Merricks is a little pocket that has retained much of its original charm.

Many original settlers’ houses still stand today, and the newly-restored General Store (built in 1927) is a popular spot on weekends. Merricks Creek Vineyard specialises in Pinot Noir production and nearby Stonier Wines produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. A rail trail connects Merricks with Red Hill.

We cruise into the tiny hamlet of Shoreham. This exclusive end of the peninsula is the stomping ground of the likes of Lindsay Fox and Daryl Somers. The small-acreage properties give it more of a rural feel. The views stretch across to Phillip Island and then out into Bass Strait. This small village has all the essentials and has always been a haven for artists. The town has some ironwork by renowned sculptor Matcham Skipper and even some frescos by Archibald-prize winning artist Clifton Pugh.

Point Leo, right on the beach, is a favourite for many who have spent endless summers in holiday houses or camping at the Foreshore Reserve . It’s all about fun in the sun, and there is a boat club, Surf Life Saving Club, store and surf shop. There are some quite challenging surf breaks, including one named ‘Suicide Point’ – although locals recommend beginners head to ‘Crunchie Point’ or even start with a surf lesson. From ‘Crunchies’ carpark you can access the area’s

Flinders

The road approaching Flinders is picturesque and winding with the added bonus of bay views. The country opens up to hills and valleys as we approach the slightly more rugged coastline where the bay meets the ocean. The dramatic scenery is tempered by the relaxed vibe of our Kombi chariot. Everyone is enjoying the experience as Mildred hums along the bitumen.

Flinders is the last town on the Peninsula’s south side before the road either turns to Red Hill or continues down to Rye, Blairgowrie and Portsea. It is a substantial town with a mix of historic charm, modern chic and remnants of the 1970s movement that spread across this area of the Peninsula when artists, artisans and surfers escaped the city. It is also the birthplace of Flinders Bread, which started in a small bakery in the 1930s and is now baked in Dandenong.

We park Mildred and wander through the village enjoying the galleries, eateries and the charming general store. We motor down to the foreshore and, in true seventies style, lie amongst the daisies and enjoy our picnic of gourmet goodies and wine gathered during our journey.

I fall asleep in the afternoon sunshine and then wake to wonder if the whole magical mystery tour was all just a psychedelic dream?!

1. I read an article about 3MFM in Coast magazine - they were asking for volunteers. I had left the city for a quieter lifestyle and volunteering one day a week appealed. I didn’t act until my father died in 2008, then I realised life is short, so I contacted the station.

2. I’ve had some wonderful jobs in the corporate world including 15 years at Telstra. My current role has enabled me to meet such a variety of interesting people. I love working with community organisations, helping them promote their fundraisers and causes – that’s where community radio really comes into its own. My worst job was in a sock factory when I was 15 - lucky it was just for the school holidays.

3. Working on a team that was part of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006. All our planning and hard work paid off and the games were a huge success. That’s apart from interviewing country music star Troy Cassar- Daley! I was extremely nervous and he was such a professional, helping me relax and just enjoy the experience.

4. My children, Hannah and Julia. I am extremely proud of the young adults that they have become. Also, my house is my home and I have a very safe, strong and committed personal base by which I live and love.

5. Lots of times. Sometimes I have trouble saying no, and I have ended up over-committing myself, and wondered if I was really able to fulfil an obligation. The first time I was on air by myself, I wondered what I’d gotten myself into – but sometimes we need to push ourselves just a little bit more.

6. I am lucky to have had so many positive role models in my life. My siblings and I had a very happy childhood with wonderful parents who always instilled in us the values of altruism, hard work, fairness and honesty. I’m encouraged by those closest to me to chase my dreams and challenge myself, knowing there is a soft place to fall.

7. If it’s to be, it’s up to me. Sooner or later you have to take responsibility for yourself and accept that you are the master of your own destiny.

8. Work hard, take calculated risks, and most important of all have a passion for what you do. If you love what you do then you never feel like you are going to work.

9. There are so many things...most involve travel. Oh - and also reducing the number of times I hit the ball in a round of golf! >

Jane Seaholme - Author & market manager 1. I was divorced and with two kids to support I couldn’t find a suitable job locally. I decided to buy a computer and teach myself how to sell online. The first things I sold were kookaburra salt and pepper shakers for $47, they sold to a lady in Sydney. I now also run the Kongwak Market for a friend.

2. No answer given.

3. Working at The Body Shop and my book, ‘Selling stuff on eBay – a real job you can do in your pyjamas’. It was self-published and then one of Australia’s biggest publishers snapped it up.

4. My kids, Susannah 21 and Freddie 18, both lovely caring people. I was the real earth mother, I breastfed for years, co-slept and did the community school thing. I remember carrying Susannah around everywhere, we didn’t have a pram. My marriage was a success, because of our great kids. And, my former husband is a great dad.

5. Not really, whenever I decide to do something I think “what’s the worse thing that can happen?” and the answer is either it will work or it won’t. I don’t take failure personally or success for that matter.

I just do stuff and if it works out - great and if it doesn’t - I’ll try something else.

6. My mother provided me with confidence. She’s always been a really strong woman. She brought up five kids practically by herself. She could change do electrical wiring and fix the tv. Dad was a film cameraman and away quite a lot. Mum never doubted me and was very encouraging.I remember trips to Liberty in London where she’d buy beautiful fabric and make me dresses. She’s still an inspiration.

7. Wait 48 hours.

8. I have always just had an idea and ran with it.

9. Art modelling - just to see if I could do it - so I did. It was the most terrifying thing, taking my clothes off in front of a room full of people, but I just kept thinking, there are artists not perverts! I did this about eight years ago in London at the famous St Martins art college. One artist said: ‘You were really good, you stayed very still’ to which I replied: ‘I thought that was part of the job description!

Cecilia Holden - Founder Nordic Designs 1. I have always had an interest in interiors and architecture, but early on I realised I couldn’t draw or come up with any clever ideas (mainly due to my impatient nature) so my best option was to sell other people’s great designs.

2. This is the best job. The worst job was cleaning toilets in a Swedish Army base during a whole summer. The men might have been great shooters but sure couldn’t aim when it came to doing their business in the loo!

3. Creating Nordic Designs from just $400 and an old slow computer.

4. Becoming a mother and my gorgeous 11 year-old daughter.

5. “Usually about three times a week at around 3am! I think that being in business has made me age a lot faster!

6. My husband and daughter, but I don’t take advice from other people very well. I normally do not listen to advice - for better or for worse.

7. A so called business mentor who told me to not start my business as no one around here would be interested in the products I have to offer. I decide not to follow this advice!

8. Have a vision and see yourself there by making real plans on a piece of paper. Take action step by step to get towards that vision. Look back after a year and you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve achieved.

Some people dream and talk, but it’s only real action that gets you somewhere. Believe in yourself, your own ability and have passion for what you do. The rest you can work out day by day and by surrounding yourself with skilled people.

9. I really don’t have a life agenda or goals like that. What comes my way will happen. But one thing I’d like to do would be horse riding in Southern Spain on a gorgeous Andalusian horse.

Cheryl Petersen - Artist & gallery owner 1. I have always painted and drawn so I guess it was a series of steps that bought me here. I worked as a jewellery designer (self-taught) and also a sales assistant. At 29 I enrolled as a mature age uni-student and studied graphic design. Then I worked as a freelance illustrator and in a jewellers. I illustrated several books and magazines but felt unsatisfied. I started painting on large canvas and knew I’d found my forte. I couldn’t stop and had my first exhibition. My husband suggested I open a small studio and sell paintings in Somerville.

2. The best job I’ve ever had is what I’m doing now. I love it love it. The worst was telemarketing. I thought I’d try something different ….

Terrible … I can’t believe I actually lasted a whole week.”

3. Opening the gallery is my greatest achievement. When I first opened I had so many people saying that the business wouldn’t last and nobody makes a living from selling art. I had to prove them wrong.

4. My greatest achievement has been learning to trust myself, believe in myself and not let fear overwhelm me.

5. Before I opened, there were plenty of doubts. But then I thought, it’s about time I took a risk and gave myself permission to try something I’d really love to do. It felt like jumping off a high-rise building at first.

As an artist I’m insecure, but that’s not always a bad thing. It’s quite handy sometimes because it brings you down to earth.

6. About 15 years ago, my life was going downhill fast. I was negative and acting like a bit of a victim. One day I read that if you believe you’re a victim then you’ll become one. I started to practise changing the way I thought about myself and life in general. It was astounding - things really started to happen in a positive way.

7. Reach for the stars - I love that phrase.

8. Go for it.

9. I can’t believe I don’t have any must dos. Maybe I would like to write a bestseller one day but it’s not a ‘must do’ - just a wish.

Felicity Hillier - Owner San Remo Realty 1. I was headhunted. I’d bought a house from a local agent and a year or so later he asked me to apply for a job they had. At 31, I thought I was too ‘old’ to be a trainee, but I got it and never looked back!

2. This one. I have enjoyed working in a few different fields, education, radio, retail sales, even cooking fish and chips. I’ve found all jobs have their good and bad sides. I loved working in schools, the atmosphere with the students was great fun, I adore Real Estate, it’s so exciting to achieve a great result for people. There are some frustrations though, mostly to do with public perceptions of the industry and agents.

3. Starting a real estate agency from scratch. Also weathering the crazy ups and downs of the last six years and coming out winning statewide awards for our achievements. It is not often a single woman opens an agency on her own, most have a handy hubbie!

4. Bringing up my son to be a fine young man makes me very proud.

5. I’m a glass half full type of girl, if I have doubts, they’re fleeting. I believe in the power of the positive, so when there are setbacks, as there are in any small business, I just dig in my heels and work harder.

6. There have been a few, my family, especially my mother and my son, some fantastic teachers at Newhaven College. In real estate, I have worked with some great people, probably my best influence was Craig Holmes, who guided my early steps and is still a great friend.

7. Fortune favours the brave. Though I’m still waiting for the ‘fortune’ bit!

8. Keep your ethics spotless. Remember the clients need our help at a stressful time. Be polite and patient and it pays to grow a thick skin.

9. Definitely a holiday overseas, maybe Italy…. I have promised my wonderful team that I will take some time off soon.

Eighteen-year-old Courtney Moir is many things – fire-fighter, student and swimmer. But Scouting takes top spot in her life and she recently earned the prestigious top honour of Queen’s Scout all by herself…

Sunday, 9.59am: At a time when many of her contemporaries are moaning their way through a hangover, Courtney Moir is poised for action at the San Remo CFA station. The mournful wail of the fire siren shatters the morning’s calm. Three times the siren rises and falls. Then Courtney flicks the switch on the wall of the station office and peace returns.

CFA member (and ‘siren girl’), hospitality student, Queen’s Scout …

Courtney Moir lives a life full of civic responsibility and community action. In her proudest moment to date, she accepted her hard-earned Queen’s Scout award from Mrs Jan de Kretser, wife of the former Victorian Governor, at a ceremony at Parliament House last October.

It was the latest in a series of memorable moments for Courtney.

Fighting the Isle of Wight Hotel fire in her Little Miss Naughty pyjamas was another, albeit on a different scale. “We had a 2.20am turnout. At that time of the morning you don’t think ‘What am I going to wear?’ - you’ve just got to go,” she says. “I was wearing my pyjamas under my fire-fighting gear. But what I didn’t know was that after the fire they had to bag up all our clothes because of the asbestos risk, including my Little Miss Naughty pyjamas!”

The PJs are now back – the pub is not. Courtney recently attended the Anzac Day service in Cowes. “It felt different because the Isle of Wight was not there,” she said. “It was strange.”

Her seven-year involvement in Scouting has seen her attending numerous parades and civic events, marching and carrying flags. It started as a 12-year-old, when she was at Relay for Life, and a couple of friends who were in Scouts persuaded her to join them. “It just grew from there,” she says.

Courtney has always been a joiner and a doer; she has been a fan of swimming, soccer, dancing – jazz and tap – as well as karate and judo. She also plays saxophone. Her devotion to Scouting, however, surpasses everything. It has even seen her leaving midway through her own birthday party to attend a Scout meeting.

The journey to the top honour of Queen’s Scout took Courtney three years, and she did it by herself. With no local cohort of Scouts to support her, she undertook the challenge remotely. Her only help was from a mentor from Korumburra, Shirley Reeves, whose Scouting name is ‘Mrs Chook’. Courtney’s own Scouting name is ‘Rikki-Tikki-Tavi’.

To outsiders, the Scouting lexicon is confusing and idiosyncratic. Even people familiar with Rudyard Kipling’s writings get bamboozled. You may know the correct way to pronounce Baden-Powell, but it’s still dizzying to grapple with the hierarchy of Scouting terminology …

Venturers operate as units, Scouts as troops and Cubs as packs. But the rigidity of the Scouting structure is possibly what helps make it the world’s largest – and possibly most enduring – youth movement.

“Joining Scouts has given me more confidence,” says Courtney.

“I think the Queen’s Scout award will help on my resume when I’m looking for a full-time job.” A former pupil of Wonthaggi High, she is training to be a Cub leader as well as undertaking a Certificate in Hospitality at Leongatha TAFE. She believes her involvement in Scouts will give her the employment edge.

“Sometimes people used to tease me about Scouts,” she says.

“They used to say it was all about helping little old ladies to cross the road. But now I’m a Queen’s Scout … and they’re not!” And a huge grin breaks out across her face.

As we descend the stairs into the restaurant at RACV Inverloch Resort, my eyes are transfixed by the blue sliver of sea beyond. It’s like diving into a deep blue ocean.

Seated in the bright, modern dining room, we feel a million miles away from the office – although we’ve only travelled for about 30 minutes. We watch as other diners trickle in and each group is given a friendly welcome: quite a few seem like regulars.

We settle on a bottle of Tasmania’s Cape Grim sparkling water sourced from one of the world’s most pristine environments just a few hundred kilometres to the south. I wonder if squinting my eyes hard enough will allow me to see Tasmania, but I only get to the mountains of Wilson’s Promontory – not a bad result.

Back to dining. The wine list offers a satisfying selection by the glass and a novel ‘wine flight’ across Gippsland’s top three – red or white. As our waitress takes our order, she tells us that native animals often nuzzle up against the restaurant windows as they enjoy the lush vegetation that’s thriving in the resort grounds.

I select a Lucinda Estate Chardonnay from just down the road at Leongatha, and Maria sips Lucinda’s highly-regarded Pinot and describes it as ‘superb’.

Open for lunch and dinner, and ‘famous Devonshire Teas’ and lounge snacks in between, the restaurant features a cleverly compact menu offering classic snacks through to hearty main courses. The theme is fresh and local, and includes many favourites such as Gippsland Farms Beef Burger, Chicken Parmigiana and house Fish and Chips. There are also comfy couches by the open fire for a casual coffee, and outdoor tables for sunny days.

We start with a Polenta Spring Onion Pancake topped with Tasmanian smoked ocean trout, avocado, sour cream and chives. The polenta makes a superb base for the lashings of smoked trout – this is a great appetiser for vegetarian Maria. Next is the ‘famous’ New Caesar Salad, which is a classic and recent addition to the menu – with a modern twist. Thoughtfully arranged rather than tossed on the plate, glistening silver Sicilian anchovies are draped artfully over the soft-boiled egg, and the baby Cos lettuce lies splayed open, waiting to be incorporated into the mix.

Grilled sourdough and shaved Parmesan complete the dish. This is a lovely light meal or refreshing appetiser.

We take a break and watch seabirds diving into the ocean before Brad, the Resort’s services manager, arrives with our main course. RACV Inverloch’s fresh, new team is a dynamic bunch well represented by Brad, who recently made his sea-change from the RACV Club in Melbourne. We’re glad he has brought his dazzling smile and attention-to-quality service to our shores. >

He delivers my Duck Confit, which sits atop Udon noodles and Asian greens with a soy and honey dressing. The mild ginger relish garnish is delicious and the duck is cooked to perfection: this dish is a standout.

Maria is delighted with the sophisticated choice offered to vegetarian diners, and grins as Brad presents her meal. The semolina gnocchi is light and works perfectly with the hummus, goat’s curd, roast beetroot, greens and Moroccan muhummara (hummus-like dip made with roasted capsicums, walnuts and spices).

Being ladies, we share a dessert – which is an even-richer-than-theoriginal Tiramisu. The Belgian Callebaut Chocolate Tiramisu Freddo is dangerously delicious! Alcohol-soaked sponge fingers encase the smooth Belgian Callebaut chocolate cream and are artfully accompanied by a refreshing berry compote and vanilla cream.

Sous chef Michael shyly appears as we enjoy our dessert. He is keen to tell us about one of the restaurant’s new initiatives – the Saturday seafood buffet, which is gaining a loyal following. He describes the selection at these events as ‘fantastic’ and ever-changing depending on ‘what we’re in the mood to make’. He also highlights the express weekday lunches that allow diners to enjoy a very reasonably-priced meal in this gorgeous setting and still get back to the office on time.

The menu is currently in transition into spring and summer dishes, but many of the classics we have enjoyed will remain along with other favourites, and there are always special-event dinners on the horizon where local producers are showcased along with Gippsland wines. Special occasions such as Melbourne Cup or New Year’s Eve are celebrated in style, too.

After a coffee for me and a chai for Maria, we’re back on the spectacular coast road that we are sure will lead us back to this impressive dining room very soon…

In its heyday, the old Dalyston church attracted devotees from far and wide. Until 1985, the Holy Cross Catholic Church was THE church of the district. Current owner Kelvin Simpson says, “I’ve met people who used to walk from the Kilcunda Hills, and I know the Cleeland family would buggy it over all the way from the island,” he says.

The Old Dalyston Church/Deli now attracts visitors from far and wide for a different reason . . . to worship Kelvin’s delicious food. When the property came up for sale in 1999, professional chef Kelvin and his partner Nicola purchased the historic building, and have been taking bookings for weddings ever since.

Kelvin is no stranger to the food scene. He earned his stripes working in some of the top clubs in Collins Street, and has catered for the America’s Cup and run his own restaurant. From Spring, the café will be open from 9am to 4pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with a great breakfast/brunch menu, and delicious pizzas fresh from the oven. Saturdays are reserved for weddings and functions, and on

Sundays the café will open for pizza and drinks (from October) from 5.30pm to 9.30pm.

4 pieces of veal

1tbs balsamic vinegar

4 slices pancetta

4-5 tbs virgin olive oil

1 bunch red grapes

flat-leaf parsley - chopped

1 bunch rocket

¼ red onion - diced

2 sprigs thyme 1 red onion sliced 1 clove garlic crushed salt & pepper virgin olive oil

method 1. Wrap pancetta around the veal (can secure with toothpicks).

Press to flatten.

2. Heat oil in frying pan, add veal, sliced red onion, garlic, halved grapes, thyme and salt and pepper to taste. Cook veal for about two minutes on each side until golden brown You can add a dash of dry white wine if you like.

3. Make dressing by combining vinegar and oil then adding parsley and onion.

4. When ready to serve, toss rocket in dressing and arrange on a platter.

Top with veal and pancetta – garnish with extra grapes if desired.

Serves four.

Most people make their new year’s resolutions on January 1.

Winegrowers do it in Spring – that’s when our new year starts. We think about the last vintage and try to figure out its real lessons for the future.

How should we change our vine management to improve quality and better guard against pests and disease?

Conditions for our last last vintage were cold and wet. It was difficult growers lost all or some of their crop. But there were some upsides – it was a great year for whites and 2011 looks to be one of the best for the early release varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. Longer maturing whites such as Viognier and Chardonnay are also showing great promise.

Two other pluses are higher production of sparkling wines and terrific opportunities for dessert wines - ‘sticky’ whites. The stickies are the result of the wet autumn and prevalence of botrytis – grey rot. Usually botrytis will destroy a crop or its quality – but in some cases it creates the opportunity for rich and complex sweet whites.

The flip side is that it was a tough vintage for reds – lighter colour and bodied wines appear to be pretty common in this region. So, some of us will make changes such as thinning out more shoots (fruit) and increasing leaf plucking – unfortunately things that will reduce yields and/or increase costs. For small producers the aim is always quality.

But that’s all industry business. The real message is that the new 2011 whites will certainly be worth a look. Just the thing to settle into on a warm spring Island afternoon.

darren brown design hooks the prize Darren Brown Design took inspiration from San Remo’s proud fishing heritage and the simplicity of nature in their award-winning design of the new-look San Remo Fisherman’s Co-op.

The project was recognised in the recent BDAV Awards winning both the ‘Commercial Design – Alternations/Additions’ and ‘Hospitality Design – Alterations/Additions’ categories.

and creating a modern and open restaurant, fish sales and aquaculture education building. All this needed to be achieved on a strict budget and to meet many government constraints.

Overlooking the iconic San Remo jetty and bridge, this project aimed to reinvigorate the original, aging San Remo Fisherman’s Co-operative building. The brief was to respond to the changing function of the building which, due to the reduction of fishing quotas, was showing more promise selling fish and chips than fresh fish. The winning design transformed the heavy, brick-rendered structure into a light-filled open space with views across the bay of Western Port to Phillip Island. The fishing village atmosphere is brought into the space through the large windows of the modern design.

The co-op has simple rooflines, combined with timbers, glass and natural tones and soft coastal landscaping to blend it sympathetically into the environment. The timber and stainless steel treatment to the balconies and stairs links the new building with the overall result being a modern, stylish eatery.

The project involved many challenges and clever blending of building an adjunct to the existing building, removing part of the old structure,

The interior is clean and modern with polished concrete floors, an open expansive interior with timber detailing and expansive use of glass to connect customers with the stunning coastal location.
