HEY HEY Welcome to December. Yep, December. Is it just us, or has this year evaporated in front of our eyes? It’s really no wonder though, we have jam-packed so much into these past 12 months. Even since the last issue, we have been playing Tetris with our diaries. We were honoured to be invited as judges for the NSW Business Awards. We got to celebrate and cheer on so many incredible local businesses. Special mention to LEP Digital, Sydney Oyster Tours and Secondlife Recrafted on their wins! Coastal Twist Festival was another proud moment for us as a sponsor and on the day it was great to see the community on the Peninsula come together for a day of music, fun and inclusivity. We followed this up by heading to Sydney to celebrate our region at the NSW Tourism Awards. What a night for the Central Coast with three huge wins for the teams at Destination Central Coast (Love Central Coast), the Australian Reptile Park and Crowne Plaza Terrigal Pacific. We also enjoyed multiple events from the inaugural Tubular Festival, especially the Fade Into You events that we were lucky to sponsor - two nights at two magical venues celebrating women in music. This hidden gem is a secret we can no longer keep. Bottletree Kitchen ticks all the boxes for an epic Coastie brunch.

Food A simple menu, and by simple we mean simply delicious. For us, it’s a toss up between the Shroom Bruschetta (mushies, goats cheese, toasted pinenuts with housemade tom relish on sourdough) and the Av A Good Toast (avo and haloumi and rocket on toast topped with a fresh strawberry and mint salsa and almonds and caramlised balsamic) for top condenders on this menu. But, if we’re honest, nothing you choose will leave you disappointed. A well thought out selection of light brekky options through to those perfect “brunch” style meals.

Drinks Open seven days a week and using Little Marionette Coffee for your liquid gold. As well as a range of shakes and smoothies.

The Pantry, Forresters Beach Tucked away from the crowds The Pantry at Forresters Beach is a total hidden gem. Found within The Quarters complex, this gorgeous poolside cafe offers breakfast and lunch. But we’re really here for the happy hour everyday from 1pm and live music the first Saturday of the month. Plus outdoor seating aplenty for those with pups.

Cue and Crew, The Entrance North If brisket and burgers are your thing, grab your pup and a picnic table at Cue and Crew at the North Entrance. They have a chilled out vibe and are the masters of smoked meats. Our go-to is the smoked brisket and egg roll. Coast 175, Ettalong It’s no wonder this popular little brunch spot in Ettalong gets jampacked on weekends, their brekky and lunch options are super delish. Out the back and on the street is dog friendly, so the whole family can come along.

Stay at Terrigal's top rated property Terrigal Pacific Coastal Retreat boasts a heated pool as well as spacious studio rooms with kitchenettes. Just a 5 minute stroll from the beach and the hustle and bustle of Terrigal makes us the perfect spot to relax and unwind.

We’ve found the perfect naturebased day trip

OK, Coasties: the air is balmy, the salty breeze sweet and the school holidays have just plonked a calendar full of long, empty days in the diary begging to be filled with new adventures. Peel the kids away from the TV because it’s time to escape the touristy crowds of our most popular beaches and be blown away by the hidden, natural gems tucked away on our own northern shores. From Pelos for the surfers, Cabbage Tree Bay if you've got the fam in tow, or Birdie if you're naturists. For patrolled beaches, our pick: Soldiers. Before you do though, make a pit stop to pack your picnic lunch. If you’re heading up the M1, take a cheeky exit at Somersby to fill up at Triple Two Cafe for delicious wraps, tempting sweet treats and smooth coffee to get you going. If you’re taking the scenic route a little further north along Tourist Drive 33 and through the hinterland, make a stop at The Hub of Mangrove Mountain and fill your pack with local farm fresh produce. Once tummies are sorted, kickstart your adventure at Munmorah State Conservation Area. This is the gateway to a choice of spectacular walking tracks that will greet you with the most striking array of natural wonders: if you’re lucky you’ll even spot some wildlife friends along the way, keeping you in the moment as you wander along the wide paths, revealing awe-inspiring views of the Pacific Ocean and down to Timber, Ghosties and Moonee Beaches.

Coasties Weekend Walk

EMERALD POOLS POPRAN NATIONAL PARK THREE HOURS MODERATE

The award-winning Head Chef of BamVino and dad of three boys, Dana Chantler and his wife Michelle started a new tradition last winter that saw their family embark on Sunday bushwalks. So, who better to bring you this issue’s Weekend Walk!

Unless you’ve got a high clearance 4WD, park about 1km from the park entrance at the bottom of a steep hill on Ironbark Road. It’s an easy walk into the park. You then follow a wide track most of the way.

One of our favourites walks from our winter tradition was to the Emerald Pools in Popran National Park. Located in Mangrove Mountain, Popran has a wealth of tracks and some truly beautiful scenery.

There are some unmarked Indigenous engravings along the way if you keep your eyes peeled. After a while, the track narrows and steepens downhill, and when you find Hominy Creek you’re nearly there!

The trek in to the Emerald Pool is a bit longer than most tracks in the park, but well worth the effort.

You won’t want to leave the pool once you get there. It’s such a calm and peaceful place!

At just 16, Gabrielle Arps from Lisarow has her sights set to become an elite ice hockey athlete.

Pursuing a sport limited to training in a single location across the entire Central Coast demands a notable degree of determination, and it was precisely this quality that stood out to us when we discovered Gabrielle Arps. At 16, Gabrielle, a Lisarow High student, recently participated in Ice Hockey Australia’s Elite National Development Camp in Melbourne. She now anxiously awaits confirmation of her potential selection to represent Australia at the Ice Hockey World Championships.

These take place Spain in January 2024 with the U18 National women’s team. While riding the anticipation, Gabrielle readies for the ongoing Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL) season, running from October to February 2024, with the finals in March 2024. Having started her ice hockey journey at the age of nine, Gabrielle has already achieved so much in her seven year career.

Gabrielle has recently been selected to play for the Sydney Sirens team. The AWIHL is the preeminent semiprofessional Women’s Ice Hockey League in Australia. She has also been selected and played for many teams across various competitions, continuously adding trophies to her cabinet. Unfortunately, funding for the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League and Ice Hockey Australia National teams is limited. Your support is greatly appreciated. Meet Mandy Millan, originally from the UK. She’s called Aus home for 15 years. Mandy and her fam, hubby Scott and children, Albie and Stella, are Bensville locals and these are their hood faves. Mandy is an experienced small business mentor with a background in branding and marketing strategy. She’s played mentor to just over 120 small businesses on the Central Coast, successfully leading them to significant growth.

Connection, achieving results and wellbeing are what drives Mandy. “You don’t have to burn out to succeed” is a mantra she lives by. Her free mindful networking events for local business owners have led to a community of likeminded Coastie businesses all working together as part of her REACH mentoring program.

Eat & Drink We are so lucky to have Bottletree Kitchen in Bensville as our local. Not only is the food amazing, but the incredible sense of community is what we love the most. Same goes for Like Minds Cafe in Avoca. They serve delicious, fresh food. Both cafes are huge supporters of our local growers and producers. Play Surfing in Umina is my go to, as a beginner the waves are forgiving! Bushwalking with the family in the Bouddi is a true treat and a great way to burn off the kidlet’s energy. The Millan crew are particularly fond of the Putty Beach Walk and Lobster Beach Tracks.

Owned by Coastie locals Steve and Kim Braithwaite, Namberry Ridge, a Tuggerah based building company, has turned this property at 27 Werrina Parade in Blue Bay into a coastal paradise, featuring two stunning houses; Bula Blue and Sega Na Leqa.

In 2019, the Braithwaites embarked on an ambitious project to renovate the back house and construct a new front building, inspired by their love for Fiji. The renovation commenced in August 2020, leading to the creation of a modern oasis with four bedrooms, three en-suites, a heated plunge pool and an infinity pool. The entire project, from conception to completion, has been a family affair for the Braithwaites and an opportunity to showcase the incredibly skilled businesses the Central Coast has to offer. Head chef of Bamvino, Dana Chantler sure knows his way around a seafood dish. That’s why he was a no-brainer when looking for someone to give us some summery Christmas lunch inspo. Sharing his Chermoula King Prawn recipe, as attempted here by Coasties co-owner Tash and hubby Glenn, who can confirm this epitomises the taste of summer!

EATING IN

DANA CHANTLER

Serves Two Ingredients: 8-10 King prawns, split lengthwise, shells on ½ bunch coriander ¼ bunch parsley 1 or 2 red chillis (spice tolerant) ½ tsp grated fresh/dried turmeric 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp flaky salt Ground black pepper, to taste 2 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil ½ tsp water 3 lemons 2 tbsp butter Method: Preheat oven to 200°C (you could also do these on a BBQ) Finely chop coriander and parsley into a bowl. Finely dice de-seeded chilli, zest one lemon, add turmeric and add to the bowl Add in salt, pepper, cumin, olive oil and water Mix together thoroughly, taste, adjust seasoning as needed. That’s your chermoula done!

Get a small pan on high heat. Once pan is hot, lay two horizontally cut lemons in it, flesh down, until they become caramelised, almost burnt Start just below the prawn head cutting down the back of the prawns, all the way through to the tail, then turn and cut through the head Remove the digestive tract and guts from the prawns, and give them a rinse under cold water Lay your prawns on a tray, flesh up, season with salt, pats of butter as evenly as you can over the prawns Cook them for about three to four minutes, until they’ve just lost translucency. If the tails start curling up, it’s a good sign they’re fully cooked Lay the prawns out on a serving dish and generously spoon over the chermoula Garnish with grilled lemons Serve and enjoy this summery dish.
