HEY HEY Happy birthday to us! September and our spring issue sees us celebrating our THIRD birthday. That's three whole years of bringing you what's hot on the Coast and of course, driving the all important #supportlocal movement here on the Central Coast. It sounds cliché, but we truly believe this will be our best year yet. We have so much in store for you, Coasties. Apart from partnering with some really cool events and enjoying all the new venues the Coast has welcomed, we have some exciting news on the horizon with the fast approaching launch of our Coasties Card app. We will continue to provide more information on this as it unfolds but rest assured, you will want this hot little app on your phones - the digitalised version of the beloved Coasties Card will make it easier to see all the latest deals across the Coast. More on this later. And now let's take a moment to appreciate the cover art, the bright and beautiful colours of the Central Coast as perfectly created by local artist Luke Taaffe. Coastal Twist Festival September 26 - October 2 Woy Woy, Ettalong, Gosford, Umina Seven days of jam-packed surprises, playful and profound fun, and learnings with LGBTIQA+ arts & culture from across our region, our state, and our country. Plenty of fun activations and events across the week at various locations.

Bark Park Saturday, October 7 Gosford Waterfront 1pm-7pm Your furry friend's favourite weekend of the year is BACK! Central Coast's big doggy day out returns. Bring your best friend for an afternoon of food, beers, music and all things DOG! There's plenty of fun for the humans too, so check out the event Facebook page for more information.

Gin & Jazz Festival Saturday, October 14 Davistown RSL Enjoy six fun hours of Jazz with performances by Simone Waddell and the Rodric White Trio, The Bathtub Gin Orchestra, Rehab Brass Band and Dr Goodvibe. Indulge in gin tastings from some of the world’s best distilleries. Tickets are essential.

Raw Challenge Saturday, October 14 Charmhaven If you prefer something a little more active, this may be the solution you need. Bouddi Coastal Run Saturday, November 11 Killcare This event deserves a top spot on your summer to-do list! A 14km & 21km trail run held within Bouddi National Park. The ultimate day out for Coasties and their furry friends, Bark Park is back for 2023. Last year's event welcomed more than 4000 visitors and their dogs (as well as Taco the cat and a parrot). It's truly a doggo extravaganza, with something for every dog. From massages and dogachinos for the pampered pups to mini pools and ball pits for the playful pooches, to treat sandpits for the hungry hounds. We hear the dog charcuterie boards will be on offer from Bark Cutie, so that’s where you will find us! Two different rescue organisations with puppies looking for their forever homes will be there.

The event also promises kids entertainment (live book readings, face painting and craft), local eats, drinks, live music and about 20 market stalls all with pet related goods. Not forgetting the Six String Brewing Co pop-up bar for those sunset sips with your doggo by your side to round up the purr-fect day out. For the pupdates make sure you're following: @barkparkau. NOTE: Despite the fun name, there's zero tolerance of any aggressive barking or anti-social behaviour. All dogs must be on leads and under control by their owners.

And, these guys offer and nail all of the above. The only thing we struggled with was deciding on which dish to order. Salmon Eggs Bene with their house made hollandaise sauce, or the Souffle Pancakes with lemon butter and blueberry compote?

“Kindness is the new black,” according to Because We Care Boutique Central Coast’s Sharyn Becker, and we couldn't agree more. We chat to Sharyn and some of Coast’s other kindness heroes to find out what kindness means to them.

Fifteen years ago, community care worker Sharyn Becker noticed care packs were often distributed to vulnerable children, but not their mothers. The “Because We Care” packs she then helped pull together for women let them know someone cared.

mission is to sign up 50 Boutique Sista Sponsorships in 50 Days. Anyone who becomes a Sista will be invited to a celebratory free lunch at the Sunken Monkey on Tuesday, September 19 as a thank you.

The packs soon made way for the Because We Care Boutique at Glenning Valley, where women facing adversity can be supported through workshops, be mentored, and even styled to give them the skills, confidence (and outfit!) to take the next step towards gaining financial security and independence.

After his widowed mother would return from a long day away from her children working to make ends meet, Abraham and his seven siblings would tell her the angel had been.

“By the time they leave us it's like they've been to the Easter Show, they can feel the love and support in the room,” Sharyn said. “You can’t put a price on that, on the difference we’re making in their lives. Kindness is the new black - it costs nothing to be kind.” The Because We Care Boutique's current

“Whoever left that box there - it’s never left my heart or my mind,” he remembers all of these years later. “Kindness means wholeheartedly giving without any strings attached. Little deeds can stick in memory banks for years to come.” Pastor Abraham and his wife, Allyson, now lead a group of about 30 volunteers to distribute 100 grocery hampers a fortnight to those in need across the Central Coast.

Their Faith in Action Ministry at The Entrance also helps the community with a charity ‘pie van’, free food pantry and charity clothing boutique. Abraham said generosity was “standing in the gap when no one else is willing to,” which fortunately for the Central Coast Community, is a belief shared by many. Local handyman Mark Mathot doesn’t need to be convinced either - he covers costs for about one job a fortnight for someone doing it tough. He is a strong believer in the pay it forward movement and encourages everyone to try to show a little kindness in their day.

“If you see someone in need, offer to help, it doesn’t have to be an expensive gesture or come from your pocket, if someone’s looking flat just saying 'hi' can make a difference,” he said, humbly reasoning that: “you get the kindness back.”

Sometimes those who need to receive kindness might not know how to ask. That’s why Chris Taylor from Wyong’s Taylor’d Automotive Services is setting up Mindset Mechanical, a support group for men using mechanical knowledge to help explain mental health. “Just as a machine requires regular maintenance to function properly, our minds also require care and attention to stay healthy,” Chris said. “By framing mental health in terms of maintenance and repair, men may be more likely to prioritise their mental health and seek the support they need.”

Meet Phoebe Raft, a budding young artist with a talent worthy of being awarded the Young Archie 2023.

We love hearing stories about local Coasties kids doing cool things and in every issue, we find it hard to pick just one to feature. What caught our eye with Phoebe was her clear talent and the simple yet powerful words she used to explain her piece. In Year Two at Erina Heights Public School, Phoebe was recently named the 2023 Young Archie recipient for her selfportrait titled, 'My Crown', in the five to eight-year-old category. It was her first time entering the competition and she was chosen as the winner from more than 3,400 entrants from all over Australia, 70 finalists and 20 from her age category.

Here is what she had to say about the inspiration behind her artwork: "I painted a self-portrait of the day my mum did my hair in a braided crown for my first day of school. I always feel like my best self when I wear my hair like this, like I can do anything!" A beautiful message of self-love and confidence that we hope resonates with many young girls and boys throughout our region. Parents, Dennis and Purdy, and little brother Stavros, have been so proud watching Phoebe go through this process. Let's all take a leaf out of Phoebe's book and wear your crown proudly.

Meet Kristy Austin. Hailing from the Blue Mountains, she turned a childhood holiday destination into her home, taking up residence on the Coast five years ago.

Founder of We Are Neighbourgood, an experience and event agency based on the Coast, Kristy helps curate and host unique experiences celebrating local communities and neighbourhoods. The next one is scheduled for Saturday, September 2. With a background in culinary events and festivals, finding special haunts across the Coast is a favourite pastime of for Kristy. She shares her faves with us: Eat & Drink Can't ever go past Rigatoni for Toni, the pasta pop-up run by Tristan Fraser.

Rigatoni moonlights at Likeminds in Avoca, but my favourite is his kitchen takeover of Bar Toto (also favourite place to drink on the Coast). Chef Sulo from Saffran does the most incredible pop-up, Sulo's Shish Kebab. The waft of charcoal-cooked meats engulfs the Galleria laneways. Word on the street is a permanent spot may be coming soon. John Ralley’s Bush River Kitchen nestled on the Hawkesbury River is one to watch. An off-grid, wood fired dining experience where he teams up with chefs from across Australia to create one-off events. Play Supporting local farmers, makers and producers via farmers markets or visiting their farm gates to pick up directly from these excellent producers is a weekly must.

So you think you’re a Coastie? Alright then, here’s the test or ultimate Coasties bucket list (you can choose your own adventure with what you refer to it as). Now, if you know who Elvis is, you change your after-dark route home to avoid a runin with Jenny Dixon, you’ve rolled down the steepest hill in the region and nearly had your hand taken off by a pelican, you’re on the right track.

From their two performance spaces, The Art House has hosted names such as Jane and Jimmy Barnes, Sydney Dance Company, Amy Shark, Carl Barron, Bell Shakespeare, Ross Noble, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Opera Australia and top musicals transferred from Sydney like HAIR and RENT. Not to mention brilliant kids shows that help make the school hols bearable.

Testing it may be, but whether or not you passed, we reckon you can still claim Coastie status! Our warm, welcoming community is what makes the Coast not only a brilliant place to live but also visit. So, either way, enjoy this pretty helpful guide of must-do Central Coast experiences.

Beaches, beaches, beaches, oh how we are blessed. You only need to be following our IG feed to know that there is no way in the world there can be just one that’s a fave. With 80 plus kilometres of coastline and more than 40 beaches, the best thing is that we can swim year round, and we can generally always find a park at a beach close by, even in the peak of the holiday season.

You've seen a show at The Art House in Wyong. As the epicentre of arts on the Central Coast The Art House brings the best in the biz. No longer do you need to go to Sydney to get your fix of the theatre.

Attended one of our home-grown festivals and events. We are truly spoilt for choice with festivals and events on the Central Coast. These annual events are not to be missed.

Love Lanes in Wyong, Long Jetty Festival, Glenworth Grazing Food and Wine Festival, Harvest Fest, Lakes Festival and of course our all-time fave Coastal Twist Festival held each October long weekend. The festival’s rich with culture, celebrates diversity and inclusiveness here on the Coast and each year attracts thousands to enjoy the weekend of festivities. Enjoyed refreshing beverages at one of these venues. Okay, maybe you’ve also partied hard there. The Beery or Mumbos in Terrigal, Hotel Gosford, Drifters Wharf, Lyons Den in Gossy, Margarita Daze in Umina, The Boathouse in Patonga, The Entrance Social Club, The Beachie, The Elanora Hotel or Shady Palms in Avoca. Most of our Coastie waterholes have views or exceptional outdoor spaces - how good! Been out bushwalking and view catching. From the Bouddi Coastal Walk from Putty Beach to Macs Beach (which technically doesn’t count unless you’ve done the whole thing!).

To the ultimate challenge of getting a selfie at the Norah Head Lighthouse in just one shot. To the instagrammable snaps captured on the suspension bridge in Strickland State Forest or in front of Somersby Falls. Not to mention the views from Mt Ettalong, Staples and Crackneck Lookouts or the Skillion in Terrigal. Speaking of the Skillion, hands up if you’ve rolled down it? It’s a right of passage for any young kid, teenager or free-spirited adult to give yourself up to gravity and roll down the grassy banks…let's go! Had a wildlife encounter. Breakfast with alpacas at Iris Lodge anyone? Spotted whales on the humpback highway from one of our many beachside bushwalks and vantage points? Braved the pelican feeding at The Entrance? Or simply, said howdy to Elvis at Australian Reptile Park at least once. Bonus points if you know what that huge dinosaur that signals you’re “in Coastie territory now” (as well as marks for knowing where to turn off to get to the park) is called.

Jolled around Long Jetty. There is no doubting the Jetty is a vibe. So, spending all day hanging around the Jetty is 100 per ent OK and it also makes you 100 per cent Coastie. Early risers can catch a yoga or pilates class then there are endless choices for cafes to grab a cuppa after class or brekky, brunch and even lunch. You can actually shop 'til you drop with everything from vintage to cacti to markets to flea, homewares and wine. Plus there are gigs, festivals and of course, the most incredible sunsets you’ll see on the Central Coast as you stroll along one of the jetties. Yip, Long Jetty is a vibe! But, we all know that true Coasties don’t have their photo next to the mural, we leave that for the tourists. (Even though we totally dig @biffybrentano's work).

Coasties Weekend Walk GOSFORD WATERFRONT TO POINT FREDERICK WALK 5 KM ROUND TRIP - TWO HOURS EASY TRUNDLE

A firm favourite for us at Coasties, this walk is a super easy one to do with the whole fam, as you can do just a section of it or end up right down at Pioneer Park in Point Frederick. Dotted along the way is a playground, a few cafes and restaurants if you're in need of a snack or drink. Plus, if you time it right the Gosford Waterfront Markets also happen here on the third Saturday of every month.

We suggest starting at Drifters Wharf. On weekends you can grab a cuppa or even a bite to eat for breakfast to fuel yourself before setting out. Wandering along the path beside the Brisbane Water is an easy stroll. The path does end once you reach the Gosford Sailing Club so if you're with a pram or kids, watch your step. From there you can head up the hill along Masons Parade, turning right onto Crawford Street to follow that all the way down through Point Frederick until you reach Pioneer Park where the path picks back up and you can meander along the water. A secluded little spot that will have you feeling like you're a million miles away from the real world.

Local Cultural Educator Tim Selwyn from Girri Girra Aboriginal Experiences tells Coasties Mag that everyone has the responsibility to protect our Coast. “It’s about future generations,” Tim said. “What can we leave for them? Fresh air, fresh water, a safe place to live.” National Parks and Wildlife Services Ranger Laurie Pasco is committed to conserving native plants, animals and historic sites across the region. Her favourite office is Brisbane Water National Park: “It offers amazing diversity across its landscape, from stunning sandstone cliffs and escarpments, to rainforest gullies, including spectacular water views over Mooney Mooney Creek, Hawkesbury River and Brisbane Water,” she tells us. And being a part of a region that is committed to sustainable practices, she says, has flow-on effects for the conservation work of NSW National Parks.
