G’DAY A fresh pair of eyes. That’s how it feels when you take away international travel and start seeing what’s on your doorstep clearly for the first time in a long time. And while we’ve always appreciated the beaches here on the Central Coast, and our greener-thangreen hinterland, I’ll admit I’m a little guilty of not truly appreciating the wealth of outstanding talent dotted throughout our region. This issue celebrates those who make, create and innovate on the Coast. Each page honours those people from right here in our region who have (quite modestly and often rather quietly) gained a loyal following throughout Australia - and the world. They are the artists, ceramicists, fashion designers and artisan makers who create something very different to each other, but who are united by a pure passion for what they do. Together, they form this, our Creativity Issue. We hope each page opens your eyes to their extraordinary talents and, in turn, inspires you to take a moment to support them in anyway you can. Macrame Dreams Workshop Sunday 23 May Avoca Beach House In this brand-new class, you’ll not only learn the art that is creating textile by knotting, led by Macrame Dreams’ Rhiannon Ludlam. We’re talking organic wholewheat sourdoughs and rose petal wines, ginger delights and fruity beers... read on for the most mouthwatering delights from nine of our region’s superior foodie creators.

Burnt Honey Bakery, Copa Calling itself a “community bakery at heart”, Burnt Honey Bakery has mastered the art of serving fresh, artisan-style pastries with a zesty cup of coffee right on the beachfront of Copacabana. Headed up by power couple Hayley Thorncraft and Joanna Fairall, the two well-travelled foodies have used their overseas expertise to produce some of the most-refined, delicate baked yummies that put Grandma’s cooking to the test. Some of their most popular creations wear delicious, sugary glazes on top of crumbly, homemade biscuit bases, next to chocolate filled croissants and crispy shortbreads. Firescreek Winery, Holgate This humble but gorgeous vineyard offers an enchanted experience of gazing over lily pad-filled creeks while sipping on punchy, sweet wine. Spread out over luscious green plains with 25 different vinos on offer, the natural fruity flavours of the area are captured in every glass and will please all types of palettes. Calling all cheese aficionados. Award-winning and delicious, this local dairy farm offers a generous selection of sharp, luxurious gourmet cheeses. Kid and dog-friendly, Bay Rd Brewing is understandably a hot spot to while away the day with a nice cold beer within a trendy coastal-style bar. There’s also a rotation of food trucks parked outside to help soak up some of the booze. (89 Donnison St, Gosford)

Block ’n Tackle, Kincumber It might be just a pocket of a brewery, but with the bar attached it is perfect for a tight group of pals. Block ’n Tackle is big on atmosphere and even bigger on beers with 10 everchanging taps to choose from. (11/13 Cochrone St, Kincumber)

After opening late last year, Charmhaven now has a one-stop coffee and foodie haven in the form of The Lavender Goat.

Bigger and better. That’s the best way to describe the food at TLG. The smoothie bowls are heaving with goodness, sprinkled with flowers and candied nuts. The corn fritters are the size of a fist. The sweet treats are baked daily, and they’re always decadent, gooey and extra AF. No matter if you want health or a sin, here you’ll find the best version of it.

Drinks The owner Kim has worked for some of the biggest coffee companies in Australia. She is a selfconfessed coffee nerd, so you’re in for a superior cup. But also try the juices. Trust us.

The Other Stuff Easy parking next to the door so good for those with littlies or needing wheelchair access. There’s indoor and outdoor dining. And there’s a big fridge filled with food to go if you’re needing a re-fuel on the way to another destination.

Fresh is where it’s at here. Everything is made on site and made freshly each day. And since opening back at the tale end of 2020, the salads, soups and chunky cheese toasties - packed with sweet cherry tomatoes and a delicious relish - sell out pretty much every day. There are also raw treats, bircher bowls and fresh bread.

This isn’t a sit-down spot, but a grab-and-go, taking your sweet treats to the nearby Ettalong Beach. There are little benches out front but they are hot property on weekends. Just a heads up, due to it being a kiosk, there are no toilet facilities. Oh, and we talked about the juices, but the coffee is a hella good also.

Drinks Rating: Get that health fix Well, it really is about the juices here. This is the first IRL store of the popular Innerglow Goodness juices that were previously only available to buy online.

THE BEACHIE Let’s be honest, we’ve all been fizzy with excitement about the opening of this Toukley one-stop spot for fun AMY NELMES BISSETT

The most anticipated opening of 2021? You bet ya. The Beachie opened its doors just before Easter, unveiling an incredible extensive refurbishment that took place during the height of the pandemic. And talk about a face lift. Formerly The Beachcomber Hotel, the new space couldn’t be further from its former life. If you know, you know. Today, step inside and you’ll be greeted with crisp white-on-white Hampton’s style interiors, a pool surrounded by day beds and views of the stunning Budgewoi Lake. And if you prefer to arrive in style, there’s even a private jetty for your boat. There's big plans to roll out a new restaurant with a firm focus on seafood and seasonal produce named ‘Pelicans’ later in the year, but for now you can dine in the bistro called, quite neatly, The Beachie. You’ll find an extensive menu with the likes of zesty fish tacos, woodfired pizzas and towering burgers, all up for grabs.

Prefer a liquid lunch? We get you. There’s a lengthy wine and cocktail list that can also be enjoyed at the Patio and Garden Bar or, if it’s more your vibe, The Sports Bar. Our top tip? Arrive for sundowners. There’s live music on weekends and sunsets over the lake with a crisp glass of savi b in hand is what dreams are made of. But it’s not just about dining and gawping at that beautiful view. The Beachie is also family-friendly, with a petting farm on site and a kids menu. And there’s even a place to stay, with boutique waterfront guest rooms that now ooze with a slick sophistication that’s needed on the Coast. Ultimately, The Beachie has already cemented itself as the unrivalled spot to eat, drink, play and stay in our region. And, impressively, its journey has only just started.

Weird & Wonderful Woy Woy ISOBEL GOODWIN-MOORE

Dubbed the Venice of Australia, Woy Woy’s real allure comes from its quirky food and shopping scene

Once upon a time, someone glimpsed upon the wondrous waterways of Woy Woy and believed it looked very similar to those of Venice. And, in turn, Woy Woy became known as the Venice of Australia (but really, only to those outside of our region). The reality is that anyone who really knows the peninsula town, or indeed Venice, knows that any similarities end at the waterways.

Instead, Woy Woy should probably be noted for being a lucky dip of eclectic eateries, shops and, of course, locals. A place to buy a crystal, drink a 9am beer with the seasoned Woy Woy Hotel patrons and enjoy an op shop rummage. In short, it is the creative and alternative epicentre of the Coast, and as this issue is all about our homegrown creators, it’s perhaps no surprise it is our spotlighted suburb.

Let’s Eat & Drink A little bit of something for everyone. That’s what Woy Woy has to offer when it comes to its food scene. For those who prefer a wholesome breakfast served with a slight hippie vibe then it has to be Gnostic Mana (31 The Boulevarde).

Now, it’s got to be lunch time, right? Let’s head to the Link & Pin. (18A Railway St), which is all about supreme eats and live music. The cafe boasts it has the best burgers in Woy Woy and well, it’s justified.

If you are more the type who’s prone to rocking it out to heavy metal, why not enjoy your coffee and bacon at the only metal and rock café in the whole of our region? Say When Café (51 Chambers Place) is as alternative as it gets.

Then for dinner, you’ll find us at a couple of favourites: Tropicana Pizza Pizza (61 Trafalgar Ave), which has all the vibes and offers sublime pizza, drinks and tunes. Or for the most incredible cocktails and Japanese cuisine then it’s up to Frankie’s Rooftop Bar (2 The Boulevarde).

Or if you’re after a killer coffee, towering sandwiches and plenty of freshly-baked treats then head to the Lunch Bar Bakehouse (Unit 1/35-39 Blackwall Rd). The outside seating is a prime spot for people watching.

Or, for those who are looking for authentic Italian fare to go, Young Barons (73 Blackwall Rd) has chunky, fresh-bread sandwiches or a delish take-home monster lasagne. Talk about dreamy.

Outside of op-shop heaven, our #1 go-to is always Drøm (2/8 Chambers Place), a surf and streetwear clothing brand that has something for every member of the family, including littlies. And if you’re a Coasties Card member (coastiescard.com.au) you get 10 percent off in store. Feeling a bit woo woo? Then pick up your rose quartz and the like from Gnostic Rocks (23/27 The Boulevarde) It’s the place for all types of crystal wisdom, and there’s a reason why people travel from Sydney to buy their precious stones from here. Next it’s time to pop next door to The Village Bohemian Clothing (2/25 The Boulevarde) for an outrageously extensive and ever-changing range of boho fashion (pictured, left). And for a true eclectic mix of delights, from fashion to homewares, walk a further few doors up to Tradewinds Lifestyle (15 The Boulevarde).

Let’s Play OK, let’s be real, it’s all about the shopping at Woy Woy, especially op shopping. There’s just under 10 charity shops in total and each is pretty easy to find.

A couple of our favourites for a good rummage are Lifeline (23-27 The Boulevarde) and St Vincent De Pauls (43 The Boulevarde), both sprawling spaces filled with pre-loved treasure.

We also love two Woy Woy-based businesses that are purely online. The first is Ruby’s Home Store (rubyshomestore.com.au), which has a sweet selection of homewares, including a British range for expats. And also the wonderful Philly Cowdrey Designs (phillycowdrey.com) and its loud and proud earrings. And lastly, for the the ultimate weekend activity, head over to the Handmade On The Coast markets on the second Sunday of the month, where you’ll find some of the most elite makers and creators the Coast has to offer. Star 104.5’s breakfast host Sarah Forster (@sarahamyforster) meets the Coast woman who has paid for thousands of coffees for strangers

Victoria Gilbert is a woman on a mission. A kindness mission, that is. After overcoming a series of challenging events in her life, the mum-of-four is now focused on positivity and giving back. Or, to be more accurate, paying it forward. It all started in a cafe a few years ago when Victoria noticed a woman struggling to pay for her drink. “I just turned around and slid the money on the counter and said: ‘coffee’s on me today’. It felt so good,” says Victoria.

Each coffee gets a little note that says, “You’ve just received a random act of kindness” and urges them to ‘pass it forward’ and tag #thebossvmovement on Instagram.

She didn’t realise it at the time, but that one encounter was the beginning of what Victoria now calls The Boss V Movement. Every week for the past three years Victoria has paid for coffees in cafes across the region, like in Long Jetty’s The Glass Onion Society.

“We’re always asking people are you a half cup full, or are you a half cup empty? I don’t know about you, but half a cup is half a cup. The whole idea is that if I’m passing on a full cup maybe it’s going to top your cup right up and you will be overflowing and keep giving,” explains Victoria.

There are times when she’s seen her generosity multiply right before her eyes. “Once I was waiting for a larger order and I watched the two coffees I’d paid for turn into another two, then four and eventually 30 coffees. Everyone who received a free coffee wanted to follow suit and pay for someone else. It was beautiful,” she explains When she’s not hooking people up with their daily caffeine fix, the trained health and wellness coach helps our community live their best lives through her business, Embrace Wellness Healing Centre in The Entrance.

While she hasn’t kept count, Victoria estimates she’s paid for thousands of coffees for strangers all over the Coast since launching The Boss V Movement in 2018, spending around $10,000 (but probably more) in total. “But it’s not about going ‘oh my God look at what I’ve done’. It’s about the joy that comes from giving someone else joy,” she adds. “I think the world is missing heart-to-heart connection. Every time somebody receives a coffee, I’m touching their heart.”

And she also heads up The Cleaning Divas, a not-for-profit cleaning company, giving people employment when they’re starting all over again. “A lot of the people we take on have come from domestic violence or homelessness. People who have lost their way and were looking for an opportunity to have a job,” she says. True human connection is at the heart of what Victoria does. She explains it as lighting someone’s candle, rather than blowing it out. “If I can be one person who can encourage others to light candles, imagine how bright those candles are going to be. And don’t worry, there are still affordable pockets all over Australia. Here are the pros to rentvesting: you get on the property ladder sooner; you’ve the freedom to live where you want; the potential of capital gains and potential tax benefits. Eat We’re massive foodies so we’re really excited about all of the new bars and restaurants in the local area. No more trekking to Terrigal or Ettalong for us! Our go-to takeaway options are Saifon Thai in North Gosford (as good as Newtown!) and super fresh Tokyo Sushi Wyoming. For date night, we like The Bon Pavilion (mushroom orgy anyone?) or South End Social (OMG, the wine list!).

Drink For cocktails, it’s Frederico’s, and Lyons Den for a spicy marg. For a late night sip, we always end up at Hotel Gosford, which is currently under renovation but the front bar is finished and is sleek AF. We can’t wait for the familyfriendly bistro to re-open in July as the food has always been top-notch, but the atmosphere screamed retirement home dining room (soz HG, you know I love you!). Play We absolutely love that Scallywaggs Gymnastics, Rockgod Music School, 5 Star Swim School and Anytime Fitness are all located in the same culde-sac in Wyoming. It’s so convenient we can all scatter and do our thing! We also love bushwalking as a family and are lucky to back onto Rumbalara Reserve, which has awesome trails. As long as it’s not leech season – eeek!
