Limited vaccine availability leaves educators hanging

Santa Barbara County’s Public Health school liaison, Susan K. Rothschild, has stated that the vaccine supply is very limited in Santa Barbara County, according to a report by arpinteria nified chool istrict uperintendent iana igby. othschild said she cannot predict the timeline for vaccine availability for local educators. anta Barbara ounty superintendents representing different school districts have sent a letter to overnor ewsom re uesting priority for “this critical group of public servants,” and will continue to advocate for vaccination priority for educators and childcare workers, noted Rigby.

Maria Saragosa 10/23/1928 – 1/26/2021

The Heavens rejoiced as Maria Saragosa, 92, was welcomed by her Heavenly Father on Jan. 26, 2021.

Maria Alvarez Saragosa was born in Carpinteria, California, on Oct. 23, 1928, to Jose Alvarez and Ignacia Aguilar Alvarez. She was the youngest of six children.

Her parents were from Michoacan, Mexico, and came to Carpinteria around 1920.

The Great Depression caused the family to return to Mexico in 1932 when Maria was 3 years old. She returned at the age of 17, with only her brother. The rest of the family remained.

At age 19, while back in Carpinteria, Maria met the love of her life, Domingo Saragosa. They married on Jan. 2, 1952.

Together, they built their home. Maria oversaw running the cement mixer. This home is where they raised their eight children. Her husband and children were her whole world, as she tended to them with all her heart. Her home was the core of her life and all were welcomed whether they were family or not. Her kitchen was always open with homemade tortillas.

Nothing brought her more joy than to hold a new grand- or great-grandbaby.

Her passion and tranquility were found in her yard, as she tended to her many plants and beautiful flowers. he had a gift of gardening and she could make anything grow. Her other passion was sewing, a gift she passed on to her daughters. She enjoyed the simple things in life, like sitting on her back porch, enjoying the morning sun with her cup of coffee, or perhaps hanging clothes on the clothesline. She was very dedicated to her parish life at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Her joy was the church’s annual carnival, where you might find her making enchiladas or strawberry shortcakes.

Words cannot express how much she will be missed, especially by her children Maggie (Don) Farmer, Marta (Ken) Becker, Daniel (Cathy) Saragosa, Celia Saragosa, Ana (Todd) Sullivan, Jaime (Dan’ell) Saragosa, Ray Saragosa and Gloria Saragosa. Maria was blessed with 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild and they all adored her! Her greatest blessing is to be reunited in Heaven with Domingo, her husband of 66 years, whom she lost three years ago.

The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Beamer for the many years of his loving care, support and dedication to Maria and Domingo.

Services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2021 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1500 Linden Ave., arpinteria. There will be a rosary first, followed by mass. Interment will follow at Carpinteria Cemetery, 1501 Cravens Lane, Carpinteria.

Christina A. Perez 6/23/1927 – 2/4/2021

On Feb. 4, 2021, Christina A. Perez, loving mother of Raymond Perez and wife Margaret and Robert Perez and wife Kathy, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 from complications of Covid-19 at Cottage Hospital of Santa Barbara.

Christina was born in Pasadena, California on June 23, 1927 to Luis and Luz Cordero Anchondo. She met the love of her life, Leopoldo Perez, and they were happily married for over 50 years. They raised two sons, Raymond and Robert Perez, both graduates of Carpinteria High School. Leo preceded Christina in death in 1997.

Their loving family grew to six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, who affectionately call her “ i- i,” along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Christina spent her early working years at the lemon packing plant in Carpinteria and then was employed for many years at Cottage Hospital as a nursing assistant in the Central Supply Department until her retirement. hristina had a passion for flowers and delighted in her garden at the family home on Ogan Road. Friends and family always looked forward to her delicious Mexican feasts. Christina’s devotion to her Catholic faith was witnessed weekly at Saint Joseph Church. She was known for her sweet smile and her kind and compassionate spirit.

There will be a graveside service on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 1:30 p.m. at Carpinteria Cemetery at 1501 Cravens Lane in Carpinteria, California.

Aliso School launches Dual Language Immersion program

Carpinteria High School Athletic Director Pat Cooney announced this week that CHS student-athlete Kenna Mayer has been selected as this year’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Student Athlete of the Year.

Mayer, who stars on the girls’ soccer and softball teams as well as the cheer squad, was selected by the school’s coaching staff for the award. ucceeding both on and off the field, ayer carries a .

City Council to discuss a citywide vote on ur iner nn project

Several Carpinteria residents wrote into the record or spoke during Carpinteria City Council’s Feb. 8 meeting regarding the council’s decision to move forward with the urfliner Inn pro ect.

At the council’s Jan. 25 meeting, in a split vote, councilmembers approved moving ahead with negotiations with the developers for the proposed urfliner Inn pro ect at inden Ave. In response to a uestion from the public about the possibility of a city vote on the inn, ice ayor Al lark re uested on Monday night that an item be placed on the council’s next agenda to discuss how a citywide election for the inn might work. ity staff said they would prepare materials for the council about an advisory vote for the inn. lark’s re uest responds to the vocal opposition to the pro ect that has been represented at public discussions regarding the proposed urfliner Inn and during public comment periods at regular City Council meetings, such as the one on Monday night.

At the council’s Feb. 8 meeting, a statement from Carpinteria residents John and Becky Jackson was read that expressed the couple’s strong opposition to the building of the proposed inn.

“It is time for the council to consider the needs of the people who call Carpin-

teria home rather than only the needs of business owners who support this pro ect. This pro ect is wrong for the location, wrong for this point in time, and wrong for the interests of all Carpinterians,” the Jacksons wrote.

Mark Smith said he and his wife are “strongly opposed” to the pro ect, as the proposed site, the Amtrak parking lot, provides “much needed public parking” to Carpinteria residents and visitors.

“The attraction and love we have for Carpinteria has been ingrained since childhood when my parents first began scheduling family vacations in the campgrounds ... in the mid s,” he said. “I strongly recommend that private enterprises bear the burden of new development on private property and not rob the residents of Carpinteria of such a valuable asset.”

Jaime Diamond recognized as exemplary Carpinteria volunteer

The Carpinteria City Council unanimously passed a resolution to recognize Carpinteria Unified School District Board Trustee Jaime Diamond for the

“significant impact her volunteer service has had on the city of Carpinteria and for exemplifying the best and highest principles of volunteer service and civic engagement.”

The council, which annually recognizes the service of a volunteer, chose Diamond because she is a “familiar face” when it comes to serving Carpinteria.

“Jaime has been a driving force behind the local food distribution program, working as the food donation coordinator for the Carpinteria Emergency Food Pantry at the arpinteria hildren’s ro ect and co-coordinating the Carpinteria United Boys and Girls Club food distribution for months in response to the ovidpandemic,” the resolution states.

Diamond thanked the council and said she is incredibly “humbled and honored” by the recognition.

“I don’t do what I do for this, and there are so many other people here in our community that served each other during this last year tirelessly,” she said.

I want to honor everybody that’s been there for each other, for their neighbors, for their friends, for their families, for strangers... I couldn’t have done it without the love that I’ve been given from our community.”

Mayor Wade Nomura called Diamond an “example to follow’’ and an “exemplary volunteer” and thanked her for her work.

Cresco proposes e pandin canna is cultivation

Project includes modernization of structures, landscaping and redirecting traffic on Foothill Road

BY DEBRA HERRICK A new proposal for cannabis cultivation is making its way through Santa Barbara County’s planning and development pipeline. The . acre property located at oothill oad is owned

by Rene Van Wingerden and leased to resco alifornia. In addition to being the landlord, Van Wingerden is also a partner and board member for Cresco’s Carpinteria Valley operation.

Cresco is based in Chicago and acuired a ma ority stake in O ultivation, the e isting mari uana cultivation facility on Wingerden’s property, in une . resco’s current cannabis cultivation in Carpinteria operates with a temporary permit from the county for legal-nonconforming use.

In the new proposal, resco is reuesting coastal development and minor conditional use permits to develop and operate a cannabis cultivation facility.

The pro ect includes the demolition of three existing greenhouses, built in the s, which are , s ft each and were most recently used for growing cut flowers.

Cresco proposes to replace the existing greenhouses with a purpose-built processing building and a state-of-the-art greenhouse addition. The new greenhouse space will be ust under , s ft and the new packing, processing and support facility will be around , s ft.

Additionally, the plan includes 71 onsite parking spaces, an expansion of the site’s stormwater detention basin system, the removal of 12 prefabricated containers and improvements to the property’s irrigation recycling and fertigation e uipment, septic waste disposal systems, placement of cannabis waste storage containers and landscaping. The proposal would maintain the existing , s ft modern greenhouse that was built within the last 15 years.

“The goal of the current plan is to design a pro ect that can’t be seen or smelled and is compatible with the surrounding neighborhood,” said Sabrina Noah, Cresco’s senior vice president, who lives in Santa Barbara. “(The proposal) will allow us to use the best available control technology for odor mitigation . . . and to consolidate administrative and support functions into a much smaller footprint.”

While Cresco’s proposal adds up to more buildings, including a second story to its main hub, the plan is a , s ft reduction to the total footprint of buildings and development on the property. The architect for the pro ect is Scott Branch of BBP Architecture, based in Santa Barbara.

If the pro ect is approved and the land use permits issued, Cresco would move its cannabis production into the large existing greenhouse that is now empty (and was most recently used to grow cut flowers . urrently, the company is culti-

vating cannabis on , s ft. ith the move, Cresco would be cultivating across roughly , s ft of greenhouse space.

Cannabis odor mitigation for the proposed pro ect includes e uipping the site with “the leading odor neutralizing technology currently available to prevent odors from drifting off-site,” according to SCS Engineers, who have been contracted by Cresco for site development.

This comprehensive odor management will include the dry-vapor phase system developed and operated by Byers Scientific anufacturing. In addition, the new packhouse/processing structure will have a carbon filtration system.

The pro ect has now received conceptual review by the county’s South Board of Architectural Review (SBAR) and, once the application is deemed complete, a public hearing will be scheduled for the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission. At its most recent SBAR conceptual review hearing last month, a handful of the property’s neighbors voiced concern

that what Cresco was proposing was not a good fit for the area.

Among the pro ect’s vocal opponents is former arpinteria nified chool Board Trustee Maureen Foley Claffey, who wrote a letter to the board urging them to re ect resco’s proposal. “ or reference, I am the direct ad acent avocado farm and residential neighbor to this site and our family (Foleys and Bailards, as in Bailard Avenue have farmed here since the s and in arpinteria alley since the s,” she wrote.

Girls Inc. is awarded $75k grant

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria has received a $75,000 grant from the Audacious Foundation to support enrichment programming for girls focused on physical education, health and wellness. The funds will be utilized to implement ‘Strong’ programming for 120 girls ages 5 to 13 (as part of the organization’s core Strong, Smart and Bold goals), while increasing the time dedicated to health and wellness.

In addition to the new curriculum, the funding will support a dedicated full-time position – a Strong Program coordinator – to work with members on physical health through sports enrichment, such as basketball, volleyball, dancing, self-defense and more. For this role, Girls Inc. has hired rica illiams, a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA).

Williams joins Girls Inc. from HM Systems, where she provided direct and consultative services to students in pre-K through high school. Prior to this role, she worked as a primary educator for Before After School Enrichment in Oceanside, California, and was responsible for developing and implementing creative educational activities for students. Williams holds a B.A. in public health and sociology from Austin College.

earmongering won’t help us heal

Regarding Diana and Don Thorn’s letter, “Hold onto your hats, America,” published in last week’s CVN, I say, “au contraire.”

The bumpy ride has been the last four years with many in this country embracing Trump’s lies, pretending Trump won, trying to overturn the results of a free and fair election, trying to manipulate election o cials, and engaging in e tremist rhetoric that led to the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol – And that was just the last month of the Trump presidency.

After four years of breathtaking incompetence, culminating in the needless death of hundreds of thousands of Americans due to Covid-19, I personally welcome the knowledgeable, compassionate approach and steady hand of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

It’s true that their actions will change the course of the U.S., and again, I welcome that change.

The fearmongering presented in last week’s letter does nothing to help heal our nation, but our democracy is stronger than Trump, or even the GOP, which under Trump has become a cult of personality. While the Thorns may believe that the Democrats may bring about the destruction of our great nation, I believe that we’re witnessing the self-annihilation of the GOP. I believe this is unfortunate because I think that democracy requires at least two reasonably sane parties. My hope is that the Trump supporters will become so disenfranchised from the Republican Party that they form their own e treme-right party. And if I were to have my own preference, the Democrats would also divide into two parties: Democratic Socialists and Democratic centrists. But that’s a topic for another day and another letter.

At long last, the City Council seems to be listening to the people of Carpinteria, the majority of whom have been voicing opposition to the development of a hotel on our Beach Parking Lot #3 and installation of a parking lot on our open space on the south side of the tracks.

Going forward, a vote is the only way to fairly work through this process, since we were denied a say when this idea was launched in the first place. It is our land. We are not willing to give it up for the ne t years, nor are we willing to endure a public parking lot against our private properties.

A player from Team A picks up the ball with the intent of running it back to complete the two-point conversion. To avoid a tackle, he retreats into the end zone and is tackled by a Team B player. This is a 1-point safety. The game score is now 6-1. The game could end with that score or Team A could score more points. If Team B doesn’t score again, they would end the game with one point. Indeed, the future might contain an NFL game where the losing team scores just one point. It is a possible event.

Westerlay Orchids holds orchid-themed art contest

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, Westerlay Orchids is encouraging local creatives to take part in their orchid-themed art challenge.

Create an original drawing featuring a Westerlay Orchid, either by hand or digitally, to be considered for a prize of two boxes of orchids – one to enjoy and another to donate to a charity or friend of choice.

Three winners chosen by the Westerlay Orchids team will receive the two orchid arrangements. The winners’ work will also be featured on their Instagram page @westerlayorchids. All entries will be printed and displayed in Westerlay Orchids’ retail showroom on Via Real.

The challenge is open to all ages, and drawings should be submitted to retail@ westerlayorchids.com by Feb. 14. All winners must be California residents.

Wilding Museum holds arth ay poetry contest

The Wilding Museum of Art and Nature in Solvang is inviting the public to participate in an environmental poetry contest with the theme “Why Earth Day Matters.” The competition seeks to celebrate Earth Day and highlight the importance of protecting the planet’s natural resources and working against the threats of climate change.

Poetry entries will be judged by poet Sojourner Kincaid Rolle, former Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara. The top three poems will be announced and read at the annual Santa Barbara Earth Day virtual celebration.

D uring this pandemic , I ’ m not getting out muc h to photograph the world.

H owever, I ’ m engaging in the arts to help me get through these c hallenging times by painting my photographs as ac rylic s on c anvas – you c an see this technique in my painting of osh Farberow Cojo surfing. The surfers of Carpinteria have enj oyed two months of big waves with great shape and I ’v e been out to photograph them as muc h as possible. Among my greatest joys is being able to give the surfers photographic prints of them surfing.

I’ve also been spending time with my first grandson, enry oseph Powdrell, whose first year of life revolves around masks and seclusion. ometimes I wonder, what will the effec ts of the pandemic be on him and his generation?

The ynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center continues to be the place that inspires me to try new things. There’s nothing better than spending time with and c ollaborating with other artists, photographers, poets, music ians, dancers, painters, ceramicists, storytellers and chefs. L ast fall, Carpinteria native K elsey Whittak er thought she was headed for a quiet day of wine tasting when her boyfriend, Connor B itze r, surprised her with not only a proposal but a mic ro-engagement party.

D uring the week s leading up to the O c t. 2 0 , 2 0 2 0 proposal, Whittak er hadn’ t notic ed B itze r’ s sly trips to the j eweler or c alls with her c losest friends and family members, but a slip from B itze r’ s mother about “a ring” had gotten her think ing. O n the drive up to the L afond Winery in B uellton, she thought a few times about it. “I was super ex c ited and even though I thought he might do it, I didn’ t k now how or when,” Whittak er said.

As they sat down outside the tasting room, Whittak er c aught a glimpse of a familiar fac e. I t was her sister, Caitlyn D amron, who was waiting with her two-year-old daughter Nora for the c ouple to appear. “My niec e ran the ring over; it was so c ute. S he had the little ring box in her hand. They had rehearsed it week s before. Connor was saying that he was super busy work ing but he was out designing the ring and planning the proposal,” Whittak er said.

B ec ause of Covid-19, B itze r had to be selec tive with who to invite, but he managed to have everyone who is “super important to us” – a small handful of c lose friends and family – “they were all hiding and popped out onc e he proposed! ” Among the guests was Whittak er’ s mother Anne Whittak er, who loc als might k now as the human c ompanion of O liver, a popular J ac k R ussell in Carpinteria’ s c anine c ommunity.

“I t was suc h a fun day,” Whittak er said. “B ec ause of Covid, we did have mask s on and off throughout the day and had to be very mindful and respec tful of all the regulations. B ut we managed to still have an amazi ng and super spec ial day that we both will never forget.”

The surfers of Carpinteria have enjoyed two months of big waves with great shape.

Whittak er and B itze r met at their mutual friend D ylan H athaway’ s H alloween party in 2 0 1 8 . Whittak er doesn’ t remember ex ac tly what either of their c ostumes were ( she was one of the c harac ters from Riverdale and he was a c harac ter from Breaking Bad), but she does remember the moment she first saw B itz er. “H e was standing by himself,” she said. “I ask ed my friends who he was, and nobody k new, so I j ust went over and started talk ing to him. I started introduc ing him to everybody and it went from there.” After that night, they began seeing eac h other every week end and before long were living together in S ummerland.

The c ouple hasn’ t set a date yet but is think ing of a simple wedding in une . “ efinitely somewhere local in anta arbara County, definitely an outdoor wedding,” Whittak er said. “We haven’ t gotten into the details yet, but I k now we want it to be outdoors, simple, pretty and nothing too c razy .”

Tucked away between Smart & Final and Cactus Lane, Alley Pets is one of Carpinteria’s hidden gems. The pet retail shop is led by brothers Alex and Jose Navarro, and offers pet grooming and haircuts as well as a complete selection of pet feed.

In addition to grooming services, Alley Pets has you covered for pet supplies and feed for cats, dogs, horses, chickens, pigs and more. Island Packers is the official boat concessionaire to Channel Islands National Park, and they’ve recently reopened for trips to Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands, as well as winter whale watching excursions.

Winter whale watching excursions are available now through mid-April, so you won’t want to miss out on a chance to spot Pacific Gray whales as they pass through the Santa Barbara Channel on the way to their breeding grounds in Baja. Humpback whales, fin whales, dolphins and occasionally orcas are also known to make an appearance.

Whale watching trips are $40 for adults, $36 for seniors and $29 for children ages 3-12. Children two and under ride free. All-day trips to Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands run from $62 to $84 per adult. Camping is not available but is set to resume soon.

Lou Grant families spread the love

Zoe and Olive Williams turned their living room into an art station fit for painting, drawing and poster-making.

The Lou Grant Parent-Child Workshop couldn’t open its doors to the community for its annual Valentine’s Day workshop this year, but that didn’t stop students and their families from spreading the love and getting in the holiday spirit.

This year, Lou Grant celebrated the loving holiday with online classes, Zoom circles and arts and crafts, and last week the school sent out “Valentine’s workshop to-go bags” to students and families, encouraging them to create their own Valentine’s Day crafts at home and even leave some around town for others to find and admire. If you stumble upon a homemade heart while walking downtown, it just might be handmade by one of these young artists.

CHEF RANDY RANDY GRAHAM Here’s a surefire way for a good start to alentine’s ay strawberries with champagne and ggs Benedict. alentine’s ay is on unday this year so there is no reason you can’t make this romantic breakfast. lan to honor your sweetheart by reserving time on your calendar now. o e cuses. hether it’s for a loved one, a friend or for yourself, cook this meal with a loving and happy heart.

On alentine’s ay morning, it is important to start with a good uality champagne and fresh strawberries. o t handon Brut Imperial is my go-to bubbly. One of the many wine blogs describes it as follows Brut Imperial is a subtle, drier-styled champagne, pale yellow in color with shades of green, deliciously vinous with a lime and vine blossom attack.

I interpret this to mean that it’s perfect with fresh strawberries on alentine’s ay. I recommend dipping a strawberry in a small bowl of sour cream and then twirling it in a little brown sugar. Then offer the first bite to your sweetheart and pour a flute of champagne for you both. ggs Benedict are a wonderful compliment to the champagne and strawberries, although sometimes I skip that part of the breakfast. If you really love anadian bacon, layer a slice of bacon before adding the spinach.

Add fresh spinach and lemon est and saut until ust wilted one to two minutes. over to keep warm and set aside.

To cook eggs, bring water and lemon uice to a boil and then reduce heat to a simmer. Break eggs into small prep dishes or custard cups. Turn up heat until water ust begins to boil and gently pour eggs one at a time into water. hen all four eggs are in the boiling water, turn off heat, cover pan and set aside for seven to eight minutes.

Toast nglish muffins. ightly butter muffin halves and place two toasted halves on each of two plates. uee e a couple of drops of honey in the middle of each muffin. pread one tablespoon of Hollandaise sauce on each muffin, then place of the spinach on top of each. et plates aside until eggs are ready.

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH I’ve heard somewhere that if a person writes a letter, say, to their congressperson, it represents about 10 people who share the point of view but haven’t gotten it together to write for themselves.

The takeaway, in a political sense, is that personal letters to representatives make a difference. ow, I’m no politician, and if I represent anything I hope it’s a respectful approach to surfing, and by extension, living.

According to one reader (well, two readers, if you count the one who took e ception to my anti incon-cam pieces last year) I have failed to be respectful.

It is true that I both promote and profit from surfing and then turn around and complain about the crowds – you got me there, reader. Also, the latest gripe was that I write in the first person, which inevitably leads to self-centered ranting.

But what better way to write about the most self-centered of all ocean sports?

Believe me, I’ve agonized over the first-person thing. ot in this column necessarily, but in thinking about writing generally. That doubting voice comes late in the night: “Who gives a hoot what you have to say, anyway?” And the only thing that keeps me going is the thought that if I write truthfully something will resonate with someone else. After all, we’re in this life together and if you don’t already know it, our time here together is but fleeting e cept for the hope we’ll meet again in the chorus of saints). All this to say I’ll keep on for the moment here – first-person concerns notwithstanding – reaching for something worth saying.

So, on to something of real import now the differences and similarities between single and twin fin surfboard riding. rowing up in ewport Beach in the early s, the twin fin was the weapon of choice. Us younger kids watched the older crew lacerate the peaks at 54th Street on lime-green and fluorescent polka-dot sprayed twinnies. There was definitely some over exuberance on display that I suspect would have been seriously frowned upon in these more refined waters of anta Barbara ounty, where style has always reigned supreme.

But for us youth down in beach-break land, where the surf industry was becoming a force and world-tour pros came through each summer for the contest up in Huntington, that high-velocity style of surfing was everything the frontside-layback snap on the close-out section the epitome of radness.

And when powerful summer southeast hurricane swells made ewport Point come to resemble the Pipeline in Hawaii, the twin-fin shredding at 54th Street got replaced by straight-line drives on longer single fin guns, cavernous barrels enveloping poised riders.

There were multiple veins of surfing influence back then that were perhaps more regionally pronounced than today, when high-performance boards and the surfing they produce have become the same the world over. Between 1977 and 1981 when Australian Simon Anderson turned the surfing world on its head with his three-fin Thruster design, it seemed that surfing broke into three camps the American (mostly Californian, but with many notable East Coasters as well), the Hawaiian and the Australian. y buddies and I were taken by the Aussie school of surfing, especially by abbit Bartholomew and his hero, ichael Peterson. Something in their positioning, the snap-and-drive style of their surfing, stoked us to want to be like them. e loved heyne Horan too, and ark ichards, both Aussies. But we didn’t have perfect point waves in ewport

Beach like the ones our idols rode in competition at Burleigh Heads and Kirra in ueensland. e did have hollow waves though, and we pulled into thousands of hopeless close outs for one or two seconds of our best abbit impression. The Aussie school was characterized, in my mind, by wilderness surfing and channel bottom surfboards shaped by Allen Byrne and ol mith. These were single fins but the surfing was dynamic, not the soul arching cruising of the older crew at the time. here the twin fins of the day with few notable exceptions) often spun-out and led to way too much arm-flapping, those Aussie blades and riders took confident, well-polished lines.

I suppose I’m reliving the past in the boards I’m shaping, as the designs are definitely circa even if the foils and bottom contours incorporate the advancements of the ensuing 40 years.

On the other hand, the boards are time machines providing a particular mode of wave riding. The act of surfing, regardless of the craft one rides, is a kind of time machine – the kind that gets the participant outside of “normal time.” ave riding is perception, moments of feeling. I love how the curves of certain boards resonate with potential. It’s di cult to say why the look of a particular shape should suggest a feeling on a wave. Perhaps it’s simply a pleasing symmetry that strikes something elemental in us, the way a well-proportioned sailboat stops passersby at the harbor to watch for a moment as the vessel ust glides.

Editor’s note: This nugget of Carpinteria history was written by Lea Boyd and originally published in the Summer 2016 edition of Carpinteria Magazine.

Hendy’s handiness still reigns Joe Hendy, a quiet, polite man who never would have described himself as important, arguably left a bigger mark on arpinteria than any other figure in the town’s history—and he did it with a hammer and nails. The European- trained carpenter built dozens of homes in the 1920s and 1930s, shaping neighborhoods that remain some of the town’s most desirable nearly a century later.

Hendy grew up in England, where he apprenticed for seven years to his master carpenter father before forging out on his own. As a young man, he immigrated to the United States and met his wife, Miriam, in Los Angeles. The couple lived in Colorado and Idaho before a relative’s urgent need for a decent carpenter propelled them, with their two young children, to Carpinteria in 1921.

At the time, Clyde and Minnie Henderson owned a vast tract of land between Casitas Pass and Vallecito roads. The property was planted in walnuts, and the Hendersons had contracted a builder for their home on the east end of the land.

Dude Bailard, who purchased the home in 1947, reported in an oral history recorded in 1979, “(The Hendersons) had started building the house in 1921 or 1922.

The contractor gave Mr. Henderson quite a bit of trouble so he fired him. And oe Hendy was farming some land that Miriam owned up in Idaho. I think he was raising potatoes. Henderson wrote him a letter asking him to come down to finish it.” (Miriam had grown up in Carpinteria and was related to the Hendersons.)

Joe swooped in and saved the Henderson house, building one of the finest homes in the valley at the time. From there out, jobs were not hard to find.

When the Hendersons subdivided the majority of their property and created Star Pine Road in 1925, Joe was hired to build homes on many of the new lots, as well as several on Vallecito Road.

Hendy imbued his homes with unique charm. His signature elements were high ceilings, crown molding, e tra large fireplaces and built-in China cabinets. He took care in each project, as dictated by his get-it-done-right work ethic. George Bliss, a close friend of Joe’s son, James, said years ago, “Once Joe builds a house, it will never come down.”

In 1993, Carla and Brad Stein purchased the home Joe had built for the Hendersons. By then, Joe had been dead nearly two decades, but Carla wanted to know more about the original owners and the builder. She interviewed several

The Steins’ connection to their home’s history informed a renovation in 2010.

Maintaining the look and feel of the 1921 structure, they modernized the plumbing and electrical, reframed and replaced the termite-eaten roof and reworked changes made by Dude Bailard and his second wife around 1980. Kitchen cabinetry was designed to mimic that of the early 20th century, and an addition was made to better tie in a room tacked on a few decades ago.

During construction, the Steins found lard cans in the attic used to collect rainwater from roof leaks, square nails throughout, a matchbook from an old Carpinteria watering hole, and copies of 1920s Los Angeles Times newspapers crumpled up in the walls for insulation.

After gaining a reputation as a master craftsman, Joe Hendy found his business booming. James, Joe’s son, took up the family trade, assisting his father on a number of projects. When the Carpinteria Community Church was ready to be transformed from blueprint to building in 1940, J.H. Hendy and Son was hired to do the work.

James, however, joined the Merchant Marines in 1941 and was killed in 1944 while serving as a Chief Mate on a ship in the acific during orld ar II. A stained glass window in the church’s façade is dedicated in his memory.

Carpinteria, and Joe’s commitment to his craft left him unwilling to participate in the cookie-cutter style of building.

He spent his last decades tending the orchard on the property where he and Miriam had built a home in the 1920s. The house still stands on the corner of Casitas Pass and Foothill roads.

Joe Hendy may have grown disenchanted in the direction Carpinteria homebuilding went, but Carpinteria has remained utterly enchanted in the homes Joe Hendy built. Carpinteria Valley Association dedicated a portion of its 2004

Seeds come in all shapes, sizes and colors, from the tiniest specks of white sand which are chamomile and lettuce seeds to thick and robust pumpkin seeds and corn kernels. All seeds, no matter how tiny, contain a combination of genetic material from two parent plants.

For as long as plants and humans have co-existed, humans have worked with the variability and diversity of plants’ genetic inheritances to create different varieties (or cultivars) of a plant, such as a more vibrant or fragrant flower, tastier pepper or cold-tolerant tomato.

Seeds contain genetic memory in the form of a plant embryo encased in a tough seed coat. Many seed coats are designed to facilitate one of several methods of mechanical dispersal away from the

and mammals to eat their sweet fruit and deposit seeds in the ground as scat.

Starting plants from seed is the simplest way to garden. You don’t need any special equipment other than a packet of seeds and some loose dirt rich in organic material. My method for direct seeding is to loosen compacted soil with a spading fork or shovel before layering about an inch and a half of homemade compost on top of the soil. I plant directly into the compost, which creates a weed-free seed bed full of fertility where seeds are quick to germinate.

If you are planting a larger area, it’s easiest to dig a shallow furrow to plants seeds and then gently cover them with soil to the appropriate depth. In a smaller space, you can also simply tuck each individual seed into the soil. The general rule of thumb is to plant seeds twice as deep as they are large, though seed packets typically have a more precise suggestion.

There are also several types of seed which should not be buried, since they rely on direct sunlight for germination. This is true mostly of certain types of cut flowers, and those directions should be clear on the seed packet.

Once you’ve dug your furrows or tucked seeds into the ground, it’s important to press the ground firmly to slightly compact the surface. Firm seed to soil contact is an important trigger for germination. As you wait for seeds to germinate, ensure the soil remains moist so that a thick crust does not form to inhibit germination. I gently water the soil surface every two to three days depending on temperature and cloud coverage.

Once seeds have germinated (most veggies should take no more than a week, while certain cut flowers may take up to three weeks), it’s important to reduce watering to prevent soil-borne diseases and moisture-loving insect pests. Veggies and herbs that do well sown directly into garden soil this time of year include kale, lettuce, spinach, arugula, cilantro, dill, parsley, radishes, carrots, beets and turnips. any of our annual native flowers, as well as several cut flowers, germinate easily when broadcast on bare dirt just

Beans are very easy to start from seed once the weather warms: Wait until mid to late May to plant out on the coast. Beans are also very easy to save for seed for ne t year’s crop. imply allow beans to dry in their pods in the fall until they rattle, then remove the beans and store in a sealed glass jar or paper bag for next spring. before rain for an effortless pollinator garden come spring. Flowers such as California poppy, phacelia, ornamental breadseed poppies, Queen Anne’s lace, love-in-a-mist and larkspur are all tough plants which grow quickly in cooler temperatures with some rainfall or supplemental hand watering.

Another option is to start seeds indoors. This is a good choice if you have a lot of bird or insect pressure in your garden or are eager to increase the speed of veggie production, since seedlings often grow faster in a more controlled climate.

The same techniques of seed depth, soil compaction and moisture retention apply.

Make sure to choose a high-quality potting soil with enough fertility to ensure your seedlings a healthy life. My top choice is E.B. Stone Recipe 420 potting soil, which is certified organic and readily available at garden stores.

Some of my favorite sources for vegetable seeds with excellent germination rates and detailed growing instructions are Johnny’s Seeds, Siskiyou Seeds, Uprising Organics, Wild Garden Seeds and Plant Good Seed (based in Ojai).

These are small to medium-scale growers saving and selecting seed on their farms and working toward a more diverse, sustainable and food-secure future. John Baran’s artistic journey: California’s coast, nature and wildlife from a new perspective

MADE IN CARPINTERIA B R E N D A TA N Like many other local artists, John Baran’s photography and paintings draw inspiration from the coastal waves of California. He took his first wave photograph when he was coming in from a dive. “I’m in the water while I’m taking the photos,” Baran said. “I let the waves break over me so I can push through them. I wake up at sunrise every day to look at the waves whether I go in or not. I find that a lot of times, it’s when I don’t want to go in that I get better photos. It forces me to be more creative.”

Baran’s mother, an artist herself, fostered his instinct for art while he was growing up. “When I was younger, my mother caught me drawing a dinosaur on the wall and she traced it, painted over it, and framed it,” Baran said. “She definitely supported my art.”

Baran stopped painting as he got older, but when he went to graduate school for landscape architecture, one of his professors inspired him to begin again. “He was from Nigeria and did African-inspired art but also abstract art,” Baran said. “He would show me the artists he liked as well as some of his own works. He encouraged us to think of creative and artistic ways to present our work, which inspired me to create more art.”

When Baran returned to art, he was doing primarily abstracts and wildlife.

The latter were painted from pictures of animals he found online, however he eventually started taking his own photographs. As a photographer, Baran is determined to improve and grow

He also donates original paintings and photography to local nonprofits working to heal the ocean. creatively. “At first I didn’t care if it was good,” Baran said. “I didn’t care about lighting and composition; it was just about getting a picture of the animal then.

Then I slowly got obsessed with taking good photographs.”

Baran’s work is heavily influenced by his background in landscape architecture. “My original landscape work was inspired by aerial photos looking down at the land,” he explained. “I would stare out the airplane window when flying

to and from school and sketch and take photos of what I saw.”

Baran often mixes some soil or sand from the beach into his paintings or collects sticks or rocks and uses them as painting tools so he can have a piece of the landscape in his work. The paintings themselves are often quick sketches, fast and loose. “My wildlife paintings are more abstract and loose than photo-representational,” Baran said. “I’ll leave pencil marks purposefully and use all kinds of

materials – acrylics, pen, pencil. It’s very textural, which is also inspired by the landscape. My work is unique because of the looseness and texturing, and the layering, the way I apply the resin on the paintings. I paint the eyes of the animals last and I take my time with them, because they’re what people really see when they look at my painting.”

On his love for abstract art, Baran said, “People say they don’t understand it, so I love when people see different things in it even if it’s not my intention. Some people immediately form deep connections with a specific painting. They can’t not buy it because it hits them so deeply, while others walk right by it. I find that pretty amazing.”

Baran first started selling his work in Carpinteria through the Seaside Makers Collective. “(Seaside Maker ’s owner Kristin Fraser) is very open to new ideas and trying new things, and it’s fun to see other local artists in there,” he said. “It’s nice when their work complements mine as well. Baran also donates original paintings and photography to local nonprofits.

These include Heal the Ocean, Channel Islands Restoration, Channel Islands Marine Wildlife Institute and the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County. He has also been working with One Ocean Diving on Oahu, a non-profit that researches sharks, for about six years.

At least two neighbors have offered public support to Cresco. In a letter signed by Whitney Abbott and Murray McTigue, the pair write, “As neighbors directly adjacent to the property, we have a good relationship with Cresco.

We have mutual respect for each other’s farming practices. We have never had issues with visual design, odor control or unnecessary traffic. Cresco has been very communicative and has reached out to inform us of any changes to their operation which might have any impact on our farm.”

The proposed development by Cresco on Foothill Road is expected to be in front of the county’s Planning Commission in the next few months.
