County shows declining rates of Covid-19 infection

On Sept. 22, Santa Barbara County reported 8,952 positive cases of Covid-19 and 111 deaths.

Of the 141 cases that are still classified as infectious countywide, one is located in the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. The South County region has experienced 188 cases total, including seven deaths.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has tested 144,903 people for Covid-19 thus far. Every county in California is assigned to a tier based on its test positivity and adjusted case rate. At a minimum, counties must remain in a tier for at least three weeks before moving forward. To move forward, a county must meet the next tier’s criteria for two consecutive weeks. If a county’s metrics worsen for two consecutive weeks, it will be assigned a more restrictive tier. Data is reviewed weekly and tiers are updated statewide on Tuesdays.

Santa Barbara County is currently in the Purple (Widespread) Tier of the State of California’s Framework having reached a seven-day average rate of infection of 24 per 100,000 residents. As of Sept. 22, Santa Barbara County reported a rate of 6.7 cases per 100,000 residents, meeting its immediate target of seven or less for one week.

The county has thus met the criteria for the Red Tier (Substantial) for one of the two consecutive weeks necessary to officially progress into the Red Tier. If Santa Barbara County is able to achieve two consecutive weeks of Red Tier criteria, then the state will officially allow the county to move to the Red Tier, on Sept. 29.

CHS Class of 1970 to hold 50-year reunion

The Carpinteria High School Class of 1970 will hold a 50-year reunion celebration on Sept. 26, 2020. While there will not be a large group gathering because of Covid-19, there will be plenty of ways to celebrate.

On Sept. 26, there will be a parade from the high school parking lot down Linden Avenue to the beach. Decorate your car, truck, or RV and assemble in the CHS parking lot between 1:30 and 1:50 p.m. to head down Linden Avenue and meet at the beach at 2 p.m.

As an alternative to a large gathering, event organizers are encouraging small groups of classmates to gather at outdoor locations of their choosing after the parade.

Woman’s Club offers in-person, outdoor Spanish classes

Carpinteria Woman’s Club member Nadia Lyhitchenko is now offering Spanish classes held outdoors at the clubhouse at 1059 Vallecito Road on Tuesdays. Beginning level classes will be given from 3-4 p.m. and intermediate level will be held from 4-5 p.m.

A donation of $5 per class will benefit the Carpinteria Woman’s Club. Contact Marybeth Carty at carpwomansclub@ gmail.com to register. Classes are open to anyone who may enjoy learning or improving their Spanish. Bring a clipboard or notebook and pen or pencil to class.

Classes will be held in the outdoor area behind the clubhouse.

Brand Farms seeks permit for cannabis processing

Brand Land Holdings, LLC, located at 5360 Foothill Road, has submitted an application for a Coastal Development Permit for drying, curing, trimming, possessing and packaging of cannabis within its existing 194,876 square foot building. The application states that no growing of cannabis will be occurring on site. The project will be served by the Carpinteria Water District and an existing septic system, which includes a 3,000 gallon septic tank and associated leach field.

The company proposes an odor system of mechanical charcoal scrubbers, located in each cannabis odor-emitting activity area.

Brand Farms proposes to employ 2025 people, including a managerial and executive staff of five to eight employees.

Proposed hours of operations are 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Access will continue to be provided off of Foothill Road.

The proposed project is within the scope of the Board of Supervisors-approved Cannabis Land Use Ordinance and Licensing Program Environmental Impact Report.

The decision of the Planning and Development Department to approve, conditionally approve, or deny this Coastal Development Permit may be appealed to the County Planning Commission by the applicant or an aggrieved person. The written appeal must be filed within the 10 calendar days following the date that this Coastal Development Permit is approved.

Autumn Brands supports breast cancer research

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the 50 percent female-owned cannabis company Autumn Brands has pledged a portion of its proceeds to the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Santa Barbara. The company will donate $.50 cents from every jar featuring the pink tamper seal for the month of October.

No on downtown hotel proposal

It has been my opinion, and clearly the opinion of many others in our community, that the RR hotel being planned for the beautiful city of Carpinteria is a terrible idea for its residents. Not only is the hotel poorly situated for our downtown and completely impractical from a functional standpoint, it will have a very negative affect on the residents of the beach community. The parking being proposed will clearly empty into both single-family residences as well as nearby apartment buildings, which poses a significant safety risk to the many children and other residents in this area.

I think it is incumbent on all of the residents of our great city to oppose this project. From the beginning, the planners, as well as the City Council, seemed to be attempting to fit a large impractical square peg of a hotel into the proverbial round hole space, which it simply can’t accommodate. I sincerely hope City Council reconsiders this project, and listens to the voices of the community which it represents.

Opposition to proposed hotel

The mayor and City Council have received over 800 emails, letters, post cards and signatures from Carpinterians opposed to a hotel on the parking lot at the railroad station. Copies of this evidence, made by the Coalition Against the Railroad Hotel, show that 94 percent of comments received are against this project. Regardless, the project was extended under an exclusive agreement for another year in a three to two vote by City Council. At the City Council meeting, the project was presented under its third name change. No amount of rebranding will change a bad idea. Thank you, Councilmembers Al Clark and Fred Shaw for listening to and supporting the unquestionable landslide majority who wish to protect the small beach town community character Carpinteria has to offer.

The supes know it, the media knows it, the Grand Jury knows it, the pot growers know it and the U.S. Attorney knows it. It’s time for the supes to own up to the mess they made, stop attacking the Grand Jurors and reporters—much less their own constituents. And stop wasting county dollars on legal fees for litigation that promises to go on for years and years.

It’s time for the supes to sit down with constituents, find common ground and amend the Cannabis Ordinance.

Civic pride

I am surprised that Carpinteria has not requested a retail cannabis outlet on Linden Avenue. With all the local contributions from CARP Growers, would not the citizens be honored to showcase their civic pride?

Regarding the grow and processing houses, there has been a marked upkeep and improvement on these properties.

However, cosmetic changes will not offset the odor issue, and how this will impact health and property values. After the recent Santa Barbara County Grand Jury Report and numerous articles, it has become almost impossible to have faith in the cannabis growers or those county supervisors who have favored the industry.

Alarcon for Council

There is a lot of hand-wringing these days about Washington’s lack of ethics, integrity and transparency—all true. But it has been rivaled by the shady political machinations right here in Santa Barbara County. Sadly, the Board of Supervisors’ response to the scathing Grand Jury Report on their Cannabis Ordinance is shamelessly inadequate and feeble.

Exhibit A was their use of an unprecedented, two-man Ad Hoc Committee as an end run around land use regulations and the Brown Act, without any public participation, except cannabis lobbyists. Then to brag about the tax dollars from an industry that they granted every known regulatory break, exception and waiver known to man—not given to any other industry in the county—well, that’s rich. Hard to do, but on the weed issue, Santa Barbara’s supes out-trumped Trump.

Natalia Alarcon supports what is great about the city of Carpinteria and wants to work to keep it the small beach community we all love. She grew up here, is raising her family here and is passionate about this community. I am particularly encouraged by her support for exploring options for our local community library.

She recognizes the potential of the library as a place for every age, income or physical ability to connect with the world.

As a member of the City Council, Natalia will collaborate with the other members of the Council and th0e community to keep us healthy and on an economically sound footing. Electing Natalia to the Carpinteria City Council also brings much needed diversity and a new voice to the body.

Alarcon understands Carpinteria

I think we can all agree that the election this November is very important. But it’s not just about the presidency. Here in Carpinteria, we have an important choice for our City Council. What’s most important here is finding a candidate that fits our needs, who understands what Carpinteria is and can be.

Natalia Alarcon is such a person. She’s a local, went to school here, lives here and is raising her family here. A graduate of UCSB with a Masters in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University in Santa Barbara, she is one of Carpinteria’s shining stars. Working for the Community Action Commission and volunteering on the Rental Mediation Board, she understands the struggles many of our residents face every day. Natalia is energetic and committed to protecting our uniqueness. As a young Latina woman, she will bring a different perspective to the dais. Thoughtful and used to collaborating with competing groups, she is a great fit with our current Council. I urge you to vote for Natalia Alarcon for Carpinteria City Council.

Make America great again

The election of president of the United States is an important choice and in normal times the re-election is largely a referendum on the sitting president.

I could easily point to the incompetent handling of the coronavirus pandemic, along with Trump’s disdain for our allies and his deference to authoritarians, and many other issues and actions that indicate that he is unworthy of our support.

But these are not normal times. We have a sitting president that has taken exceptional means to undermine our democracy. From sowing doubt about election outcomes without providing any evidence, to calling the free press—which

is guaranteed by our constitution—the “enemy of the people,” he has continually threatened our democracy. To exacerbate the current state of our country he has encouraged white supremacists and other nationalists to carry weapons and stand against demonstrators, peaceful or not.

I hope that voters will vote their conscience, and not their 401k, as a previous letter writer stated. After all, the stock market occasionally goes down, but it always rises over time. Let’s vote to restore our country to be the beacon of light for democracy around the world.

Trickle-down economics

I’m conservative and primarily vote Republican. I have voted for Democrats in the past. I don’t need to totally agree with a candidate’s political views to support him or her. I primarily look for candidates who understand how democracy works and who make some common sense.

It’s my belief that individual responsibility, economic freedom and human dignity are important characteristics that distinguish democracy from other forms of government.

I readily acknowledge that modern Republican political candidates leave much to be desired, but modern Democrats are a far bigger personal concern.

The source of government money is taxes. The Democrat Robin-Hood-like mantra that success should be heavily taxed to redistribute wealth, and that government should have greater control over individual lives, will not create the fantasyland democracy Democrats are attempting to sell to Americans.

We should encourage success, not penalize it. Successful people generate jobs for others. Large profits made by corporations allow them to expand and create more jobs. And, you could be a less-than-wealthy shareholder and share in the profits via stock dividends from successful companies. All one has to do is look at the wealth exiting California, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York to realize the disaster of penalizing success.

And, with this exit of wealth, who do you think will have their taxes increased to generate needed state revenue?

I encourage you to examine the policies and proposals of both major political parties. Make your own determination as to whether or not they promote individual responsibility, economic freedom and human dignity. Republican proposals are somewhat lacking, but, in my opinion, Democratic proposals don’t even come close to recognizing, encouraging or supporting individuals in our democratic society. You don’t have to agree with me.

Exercise your right to vote. Just be aware of what you are voting for.

George Jackson Gibb 4/29/1927 – 8/24/2020

George Jackson Gibb was born on April 29, 1927 in Milton, Massachusetts and passed away on Aug. 24, 2020 at the age of 93 in Carpinteria. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Carolyn Coane Gibb, and a sister, Edith May Gibb Johnson. A second sister, Virginia Gibb Keith, died in 2018.

George attended public schools in Milton, Massachusetts and graduated in 1950 from Wheaton College, Illinois, with a major in French. George was a talented language learner who enjoyed speaking and reading French and Spanish. He and Carolyn served briefly as Plymouth Brethren missionaries in Chile before returning to Waco, Texas and then Santa Barbara, where they lived on Puesta del Sol Road. Later they moved to the Sandpiper Home Park in Carpinteria, where they resided for 41 years.

For many years George was employed by the U. S. postal service, delivering mail to routes in Santa Barbara and Montecito.

The Gibbs also taught Bible lessons for children and hosted adult Bible studies in their home. George was an ardent tennis player, swimmer, and amateur painter and craftsperson. He and Carolyn were members of the Carpinteria Valley Baptist Church, and for some years he was a regular speaker at the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission. After George’s health declined from a heart condition, he passed away peacefully in his home Aug. 24.

Maxine Y. Kelley 4/18/1941 – 7/22/2020

It is with great sadness the family of Maxine Yvonne (Brandel) (Foss) Kelley announces her gentle passing on July 22, at the age of 79. Maxine was born on April 18, 1941 to the late Jack and Anna (Goldmanson) Brandel in Fresno, California. Her childhood was spent in San Francisco, graduating from Balboa High School, Class of 1959.

Maxine’s thirst for adventure took her all over the United States and Europe. Her lifetime appreciation of all things “old” led her in retirement to expand her interests with Estate Sales Unlimited. Maxine networked throughout Santa Barbara County and beyond, sharing her lifetime of knowledge and hands on experience appraising and selling antiques, not to mention collecting a few along the way.

Maxine left an indelible impression with those whose paths crossed hers. She was an avid lover of art, photography and the theater.

Maxine pursued her interests with such passion and joy, from her love of performing in small theater in her younger days to traveling abroad in her “yonder years,” to her vast collection of books, paintings and collectibles. With matching tenacity, Maxine immersed herself in her local community too. A long-time employee for the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce, Maxine had the opportunity to support her “cherished place to live,” Carpinteria. She took pride in supporting her community by volunteering. The annual California Avocado Festival was a favorite, as was the Carpinteria Historical Society.

Within her resident community, Maxine was a local advocate for Mobile Home Rights & Provisions and the California Mobile Home Association; she spent over 25 years holding various offices, including president of the Recreation Club for many of those years. Maxine wasn’t afraid to insist on change that bettered her community. Whether she was creating a food bank for those in need or advocating for fair practices, Maxine took these on with strong determination and fierce resolve. She helped many and made a lot of friends along the way. Maxine will be greatly missed by her children Michael, Deborah, Alaina and Shaina; her five grandchildren Cathy, Ryan, Cayla, Emma and Max; her beloved Daisy Valentina; her niece Jill and nephews David and Paul; as well as many dear friends and colleagues. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and beloved sister Paulette.

Memorial donations in Maxine’s name may be made to the Alcazar Theatre Center for Arts & Entertainment, 4916 Carpinteria Ave., Carpinteria, CA 93013.

Kirk Nix 6/18/1959 – 9/9/2020

“Captain” Kirk Nix passed away peacefully while asleep in his home in Shepherd’s Place in Carpinteria at the age of 61, due to complications from a chronic illness.

Kirk was born on June 18, 1959 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, to Charles “Chuck” Nix and Mary Nix, his parents who preceded him in death. He was raised in Carpinteria alongside his elder brother Michael and his elder sister Gail, who survive him.

A life-long resident and proud local of Carpinteria, Kirk attended and graduated from Carpinteria High School. He was a passionate lover of the ocean and spent much of his youth surfing at Carpinteria beaches and taking part in amateur competitions. True to Carpinteria’s namesake, he took up the trade of carpentry after graduation, culminating in a position as a finish carpenter at the world-famous Miramar hotel in Montecito. Afterwards, he moved on to accept a position as a civil servant where he worked at the South Coast Recycling and Transfer Station for Santa Barbara County.

But those closest to him knew Kirk as a loving father of four children. Kirk is survived by his son Joseph, and his three daughters Kristina, Lisa and Katie.

Judy Pearce 8/5/1941 – 9/14/2020

Judy was born on Aug. 5, 1941, and grew up on her family’s homesite next to the Miramar Hotel which was purchased in 1907 by her great-grandparents. Judy was a highly-respected horsewoman, local historian, writer and activist for the preservation of Carpinteria’s small beach town charm. In the 44 years she lived in Carpinteria, she was frequently found participating in the conservation of our bluffs, salt marsh and agricultural lands from development.

He is also survived by his granddaughter Veda. Their early days together as a family created happy memories that his children will carry with them through the rest of their lives. Lisa’s memories of camping near the Santa Ynez River with Kirk has given her a life-long love of nature, where she has always felt at peace.

Joseph will always remember the times Kirk took him and his sisters to the beach, and the joy he felt playing with them in the sand. Kristina will always remember the quiet nights they spent looking at the stars together, listening to her father’s imaginative ghost stories. And Katie will always treasure the love of surfing that she inherited from her dad.

Kirk was a gentle, energetic and fun-loving free spirit. He felt at home in nature and in the sea, which he loved dearly. Surfing always brought his spirits up; a happy day at the beach would put him in a good mood for days. He loved music and could often be heard playing his guitar late into the night. He was open and generous with everyone he called a friend, which was almost everyone he met. He was funny, goofy and gentle.

His silly grin often hid his quick wit and sincere affections. He would always hug those he loved with a tight bear hug, and it was always so hard for him to let go of you. In just the same way, it will be very hard for all the people who knew and loved him to let him go.

Kirk will be mourned in private ceremonies by his friends and family. In lieu of flowers or gifts of any kind, we ask you to please consider making a donation to Lunch Bunch for Homeless Outreach. During the final years of his life, Kirk gave of his time and energy to the community and would like those who love him to continue to do so in his honor. His family thanks you for your thoughts, support, prayers and positive energy.

Friends were always welcomed into her home, and most became “family.”

She loved to cook and often would go into her garden to gather the ingredients for a given meal. Her homemade bread was legendary. It did not matter if it was a Monday or a holiday, if a person was at her house at dinnertime, they were more than welcome and strongly encouraged to stay. She moved through the world with love. She touched many people with her uniquely bright spirit. As a friend once wrote about her, “She is the last one barefoot and dancing, ... forever with a flower in her hair.”

Judy passed away peacefully at home in Carpinteria on Sept. 14. She had been undergoing treatment for cancer for nearly a year. Her husband of 48 years was holding her hand when she took her last breath.

Judy is survived by her husband Steve Pearce; her children Kathy Gregory, Tom Poulos, Karen Latter and Sara Killen; her brother Owen Guitteau; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service is intended for the future. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Judy’s memory may be made to the Carpinteria Valley Historical Museum, 956 Maple Ave., Carpinteria, CA 93013.

Frank Sherlock 2/19/1951 – 8/5/2020

Frank Sherlock was born in Teaneck, New Jersey on Feb. 19, 1951, and graduated from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton in the 1970s as an ocean engineer. He traveled the world working for Texas Instruments on oil expeditions.

Frank was an international surfer and in the ‘70s surfed at Cape St. Francis in South Africa where the movie “Endless Summer” was filmed.

Frank died having 38 years of sobriety.

He worked with The Lamb of God Recovery Center in Okeechobee, Florida helping men in alcohol and drug recovery.

Frank tested positive for Covid-19 while in assisted living, and he passed away from heart and lung complications on Aug. 5, 2020 in Miami, Florida.

Frank is survived by his sister Monica Sherlock of Carpinteria.

Paster Joe Epley of Carpinteria Family Baptist will officiate a memorial service, and Frank’s ashes will be scattered at sea.

Richard “Dick” Holroyd Topham Sr. 10/7/1930 – 10/17/2020

Richard “Dick” Topham Sr., 89, died on Sept. 17, with his children by his side in Carpinteria, California. A graveside service for Richard will be held in the coming weeks at the Carpinteria Cemetery.

Richard was born Oct. 7, 1930, in Port Washington, New York to William and Marion Topham. Richard grew up in Long Branch, New Jersey, graduating from Long Branch High School in 1948.

Richard married Rosemary M. Guzzi in 1953. They had a wonderful marriage for over 60 years before Rosemary’s passing in 2013.

Richard was in the Military Army Reserves from 1950-1954, and from 19541956 Richard was a Korean War Veteran in the Army stationed at NATO Southern Europe. Richard stayed in the Army Reserves until 1958. After the military, Richard received his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Monmouth University in 1962.

Richard worked at EAI with analog computers from 1956-1967 in New Jersey and at Control Data with digital computers from 1967-1977 in Minnesota and Pennsylvania. Richard’s most significant achievement was his acceptance of Analog Computer Systems by NASA’s 1966 Space Program. In 1977, Richard and Rosemary moved to California where he was founder and president of Location Sound Corporation and Professional Sound Corporation in Los Angeles, California.

Richard worked side by side with Rosemary for over 25 years growing and expanding the professional audio industry. Richard revolutionized the professional film and TV audio industry with his innovative ideas for which he received the Lifetime Achievement Award and Lifetime Honorary Membership in the Cinema Audio Society.

Richard and Rosemary retired in Carpinteria to be by the sea. Richard and Rosemary loved to travel together and Richard loved to ski. You could always see Richard on the tennis courts at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club or flying his racing Pigeons. Richard had a lifetime appreciation of music which he loved to share with family and friends.

Richard Topham is survived by: daughters, Debbie Martel and Ruthann Morrison, and sons, Richard H. Topham Jr and Martin Topham; along with 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

CCC forum on healing from grief goes virtual

Compassionate Care of Carpinteria’s “The Light Shines Ahead” event will go virtual on Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 6-7 p.m. and will feature keynote speaker Santa Barbara County Firefighter Sam Dudley.

Dudley will deliver an uplifting presentation on how counseling has helped him after experiencing grief and loss. He will also share his experience as handler to Rhonda, the Fire Department’s first emotional support canine, to provide comfort and support to first responders.

Beth Cox will also speak at the event.

Owner and vice president of operations at Green Leaf Landscapes, Cox has received services from Hospice of Santa Barbara.

“When my father, Roger Green was dying of Stage IV melanoma cancer, Hospice of Santa Barbara flew into our lives like

Angels on Earth just four days prior to him passing,” said Cox. “We were all in such disarray, walking around like we’d been hit by a semi-truck, as he’d only been diagnosed 22 days prior. Hospice made us feel that death can be a beautiful metamorphosis, and while it was the most difficult time my family and I had ever experienced, the calm, cool and collected ways of these special people, made it peaceful and knowledgeable.”

During the event, there will also be an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for gift baskets and other prizes.

Chiropractor opens new practice in Carpinteria

Chiropractor Dr. Kevin Choo has opened a new practice in Carpinteria offering a variety of modalities for clients. “I’m thrilled to have opened my doors to patients,” said Dr. Choo. “This marks the culmination of a personal mission to return to practice, having suffered a severe injury after being hit by a car.”

Dr. Choo treats patients through a combination of low-force modalities. For example, he addresses osseous misalignment using the spring-loaded Activator instrument.

Activator uses an established assessment protocol designed to address the body as a whole. The instrument has been calibrated to multiple force settings, each corresponding to differing areas of the body. “This allows for adjustments using the least amount of force possible,” noted Dr. Choo, “devoid of the ‘cracking’ so many of my colleagues seem eager to share on social media.”

Ask the Candidates The Race for Carpinteria City Council

This year’s election cycle includes a hotly contested race for Carpinteria’s two open seats on City Council.

Citizens of the World’s Safest Beach will have a chance to choose two councilmembers from a pool of three qualified candidates. Incumbent Mayor Wade Nomura competes for his third term, with eight years Council service under his belt, and the desire to serve another four.

Candidate and Carpinteria-native Natalia Alarcon hopes her experience in community service and background as a bilingual Licensed Marriage and Family

Therapist will help her win a seat on the Council to “amplify the voices of our underrepresented community members.” And, retired professor and media presenter Mark McIntire has thrown his hat in the ring with the slogan, “Make Carpinteria better than ever.”

Natalia Alarcon

Hi, my name is Natalia Alarcon and I am running for Carpinteria City Council. The desire to be a part of something bigger has always been a part of who I am. Carpinteria is my hometown. Growing up here, I attended our local schools and I am now raising my family here.

I earned my bachelor’s degree at University of California, Santa Barbara and my master’s degree in clinical psychology at Antioch University of Santa Barbara. My unique experiences as a bilingual Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and nonprofit professional have taught me to listen and to work collaboratively with others for meaningful and lasting change.

The skills and opportunities I have gained have led me to give back to the community I call home. As an active board member of Parents for Aliso and the Rental Housing Mediation program, I stay connected and committed to my community.

With 48 percent of Carpinterians identifying as Hispanic and/or Latino and 50 percent being women, there is a significant lack of diversity on the dais, which means many perspectives are not being taken into consideration when decisions are being made. I will amplify the voices of our underrepresented community members.

As your future council member, I will listen and work with you to find new solutions to city concerns. I will advocate for social justice and equity. I will work to support our small businesses and work in partnership with community members to make the best decisions on behalf of the community.

Mark McIntire

I’m Mark McIntire and I have a BA and MA in philosophy from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. I was elected to the National Screen Actors Guild Board of Directors from 1983 to 1986, and I was Amicus Curiae of “Communications Workers of America v. Beck,” 487 U.S. 735 (1988). My occupation is retired professor and media presenter.

I retired after 23 years teaching philosophy and online critical thinking at Santa Barbara City College. I’m running for Carpinteria City Council to: 1) Ensure that City Council uses referenda and/or internet surveys of registered voters before Council spends millions of tax dollars on unpopular programs such as the luxury hotel at the train station; and 2) Ensure “We The People” take back our civic government, our economy, our schools, our courts, our police and our traditional American culture from those who would ‘cancel’ it. That will “make Carpinteria better than ever.”

Wade Nomura

Since moving to Carpinteria in 1977, I have been involved in and continue to do countless community service activities. I live by the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self,” giving thousands of hours volunteering for Carpinteria and others. I was recognized as “Carpinterian of the Year” in 2011. No project is too small or too large for me—I was one of two Carpinteria representatives on the Caltrans freeway widening committee. As your mayor, in the last few months, I walked the beaches with fellow Rotarians collecting rubbish after Labor Day. I volunteered with “Mask Up Carp,” managing and providing chalk to entrants.

For the last eight years, I have been the chair of the Carpinteria Boys and Girls Foundation. I played a key role in the creation of Tomol Interpretive Play Area— from conception to securing $1 million funding, plus I was the project manager and still maintain the park with my Rotary Club.

I have worked with our youth by coaching and mentoring thousands in sports and life including as president of the Santa Barbara Junior Golf Tour for 30 years, driving the participants all over the county to compete at golf events I organize.

For nearly 25 years, I have served the city as a member of the ARB (17 years) and City Council (eight years). I have worked hard to protect our small beach town charm. I was involved in the acquisition of the Bluffs Nature Preserve; creating an inviting downtown through green streetscapes; installing the community vegetable garden; and working with staff for a more energy efficient city.

I have demonstrated my commitment to: strengthening our community, caring for our environment, protecting our small-town charm and growing future generations. Thank you for your trust in me. I will always do my best for Carpinteria.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3

What to know about voting in the next election

The presidential general election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3. In Santa Barbara County, voters can expect increased efforts to help ensure their vote is counted.

Due to the pandemic, all registered voters in the state of California will automatically receive a ballot in the mail at the beginning of October. If a voter does not receive their ballot by Oct. 12, they should immediately contact the Santa Barbara County Registrar of Voters office at (805) 568-2200.

VOTERS CAN VERIFY THE ACCURACY OF THEIR VOTER REGISTRATION, including residential and mailing addresses, at sbcvote.com. To make address and other updates to their registration, or for eligible citizens to register to vote, visit registertovote.ca.gov.

COUNTY ELECTIONS HAS ADDED 30 SECURED BALLOT DROP BOXES throughout the county. To avoid concerns about postal delivery delays, voters are encouraged to utilize a drop box to return their ballot. Drop boxes will be available 24 hours a day beginning Oct. 5 until 8 p.m. on Election Day (Nov. 3). A list of all drop box locations in Santa Barbara County will be included with the vote ballot and posted at SBCVote.com.

VOTERS MAY MAIL THEIR BALLOT WITH NO POSTAGE REQUIRED, postmarked by Election Day (Nov. 3).

The preprinted return address is the Santa Barbara County Elections Office.

The Postal Service advises voters to mail their ballots no later than Oct. 27 to reach the elections office in time to be counted.

VOTERS MUST REMEMBER TO SIGN THE BALLOT ENVELOPE. The signature on every returned voted ballot envelope will be compared to the signature on the voter’s registration card before it is counted.

If a voter thinks that their signature has changed over time, they should contact Santa Barbara Registrar of Voters at (805) 568-2200 or re-register online at registertovote.ca.gov. The DMV signature may be utilized with online voter registration.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY ELECTIONS IS ALSO STAFFING 35 IN-PERSON VOTING SITES over four days for those who would like additional services including language assistance or a re-

placement ballot. These sites will be open Oct. 31 through Nov. 3. Facial coverings will be required and voters should expect a socially distanced waiting line. Voters have been assigned to polling place locations that will be listed on the back cover of the voter’s County Voter Information Guide. CWC to host women’s leadership forum

Young people are not immune to Covid-19, as we have seen in recent weeks with a dramatic increase in virus cases in people ages 18-40. Unfortunately, there are more young adults experiencing severe complications, facing hospitalizations and even dying from the virus, according to new data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Why are we seeing this surge in Covid-19 cases in younger people? One reason may be a belief that as a young person, you are naturally healthy. But unless you consistently have annual check-ups, you are less likely to detect any underlying health problems. Unfortunately, many young adults feel they are in good health and therefore don’t regularly see a healthcare provider until something goes wrong.

Another reason for the increase in young people may be social behaviors that are often prevalent with young adults, which have encouraged the virus to spread more easily among this population. As states around the country relaxed business closure restrictions, many young adults frequented bars, restaurants and beaches, which increased their vulnerability to contracting the virus. The risk is further increased by lack of adherence to key practices of social isolation, distancing protocols and wearing masks in public.

For the most part, older adults are more aware of their limitations as well as their medical conditions, and they are usually socially isolating and taking all necessary precautions. It’s commonly known that as we age, we become more susceptible to disease and disability.

We strongly encourage everyone to adhere to Health Orders including wearing a mask, maintaining six-foot distancing from others, staying home whenever possible and remaining at home when you are sick.

He completed Residency training in Munich, Germany and Tucson, Arizona and is board certified in Family Practice (Germany) and Internal Medicine (USA). Dr. Ansorg is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and is on the Medical Staff at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.

Dr. Ansorg has served as Public Health Officer for Santa Barbara County since April 2019.

DIANA RIGBY CUSD SUPERINTENDENT

On Aug. 21, Dr. Ansorg, health officer of Santa Barbara County Public Health, announced that Santa Barbara County would accept waivers for elementary schools to reopen in-person learning.

The waiver application includes components of the Reopening Plan adopted by the Carpinteria Unified School Board of Trustees on Aug. 11, in consultation with labor and parent organizations, and a plan for staff testing every two months.

At the Sept. 15 schoolboard meeting, submission of the waiver was approved based on a very low incidence rate of positive Covid-19 cases in the Carpinteria, Summerland and Montecito areas, the board-adopted comprehensive reopening plan for protecting the health and safety of students, and support from parents, staff and community organizations.

The CUSD comprehensive reopening plan was developed during the past three months with input and feedback from the CUSD Leadership Team, teachers, staff, parents and community members.

We met 10 days in the summer with the Union to discuss the reopening plan.

The reopening plan reflects the County Department of Public Health Framework for Opening Schools, CDPH Industry Guidance for Schools, and Santa Barbara County Public Health guidance for schools. The focus of the plan is safety and it includes the following components: Planning Assumptions, Goals for Reopening, General Safety Conditions, Planning Phases, Promoting Healthy Hygiene Practices, Intensify Cleaning, Disinfectants, and Ventilation, Implementing Distancing Inside and Outside of the Classroom with student cohorts no more than 14 students, Train All Staff and Educate Families, Check for Signs and Symptoms, Plan for When a Staff Member, Child, or Visitor Becomes Sick, Maintain Healthy Operations, and Considerations for Partial and Total Closures.

The CUSD Board of Trustees discussed this plan at both public schoolboard meetings on July 28 and Aug. 11 with public comments from teachers, staff, parents and community members. On Aug. 11, the schoolboard voted their approval of CUSD reopening plan which is posted on the CUSD website at cusd.net.

PPE Update

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) inventory is maintained daily at CUSD. PPE is ordered regularly to increase and replenish the supplies as PPE is distributed to school sites and staff. PPE inventory includes: no touch thermometers, hand sanitizer (individual, portable stations, wall mounted stations and bulk), adult and student cloth face masks, adult and student daily use face masks, face shields, gloves, shoe covers, safety aprons, KN95 masks, safety goggles and alcohol based disinfectant wipes.

Clorox/Lysol wipes are in supply, however, we have not been able to reorder brand name or generic for some time. There are alcohol-based disinfectant wipes in inventory, which are available for order and supply to staff. Clorox/ Lysol wipes and sprays are categorized as cleaning chemicals, not PPE. Custodial supplies for disinfecting and cleaning are not included on the PPE inventory and are available in the warehouse. Portable hand sanitizer stations are being assembled and will be delivered to the elementary schools in the next week and placed outside each classroom. We have also received additional portable wall mount stations that we will be mounted in each classroom so that there will be stations on all sides of the classrooms. The business team will also be preparing “Classroom Readiness Kits” for elementary classrooms that will consist of student-size sanitizers, one for each student, a pump bottle of sanitizer for the teacher desk, a five-pack of cloth masks for the teacher, a box of 50 day use adult masks, a box of 50 day use student masks, a box of medium gloves (other sizes available by request using the PPE Order From), and one face shield for the teacher. All sites have the PPE Order Form and can request supplies directly from the district warehouse.

CDPH Guidance Related to Cohorts-Aug. 31, Sept. 4

On Aug. 31 and Sept. 4, California Department of Public Health published guidance for schools “to provide necessary in-person limited instruction, target support services, and facilitation of distance learning in small group environments for a specified subset of children and youth, and for those programs to understand the required health and safety practices needed to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in their settings.”

A cohort is defined as a stable group of no more than 14 children and no more than two supervising adults (no more than 16 individuals) in a supervised environment in which they stay together for all activities. Physical distancing and face coverings are also required. This guidance enables schools to provide supervision and care for students, including specialized services for students

with disabilities and English learners and in-person support for at-risk and high needs students. Secondary special education students at CMS and CHS are struggling with remote learning and making minimal progress on their IEP goals.

The District Leadership Team will work with CMS Principal Lisa O’Shea and CHS Principal Gerardo Cornejo and their site special education teams to develop plans to provide in-person instruction for cohorts of special education students at CMS and CHS following the CDPH guidance.

CHS Athletics

CDPH issued guidance related to in-person instruction for small cohorts (14 students) in a school setting which permits reopening of Carpinteria High School Athletics on campus. CHS Principal Gerardo Cornejo is working with Athletic Director Pat Cooney and the coaches to schedule in-person team conditioning within the next two weeks.

UCSB Destination College Advising Corp (DCAC)

We welcome College Advisor Crystal Soriano to CHS as an integral team member in college advising and the application process. She is dedicated to making the college application process more accessible to CHS students and their families, and she will work directly with students and their families on navigating their journey to higher education. She supports students by researching colleges and majors, securing scholarships, and completing the application process for admission and financial aid.

93013 Fund

The 93013 Fund is a program of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset Charitable Foundation, and they have generously raised funds a second time to provide 100 bags of necessary school supplies for Carpinteria Unified School District elementary students learning at home. Sixty-seven percent of CUSD students are poor and do not have access to learning materials at home. We are so grateful for the ongoing generosity and support of the 93013 Fund for our schools.

Principal addresses reopening concerns and misinformation

On Monday, Sept. 21, Canalino Elementary School Principal Jamie Persoon sent families a letter addressing concerns and misinformation circulating about partial reopening plans for Oct. 1. “In reviewing emails and social media posts, it is evident that there is unfortunately a fair amount of misinformation floating around,” Persoon stated. “I have probably responded to 25 emails in which folks have been misinformed, causing undue stress and worry.”

The principal then listed and responded to six issues: “There is no reopening plan”; “You don’t send information in Spanish”; “We don’t have enough PPE”; “A large percentage of students will be doing independent study”; “Staff don’t want to return”; and “Testing isn’t in place.”

Persoon stated that reopening plans have been posted and regularly updated since July 24, and that all school announcements are translated into Spanish via the Aeries online portal, adding that most of the staff at the school also speak Spanish. Additionally, she noted, “Mayra Juarez is our bilingual office expert, and she can assist Spanish-speaking families with any questions or concerns.”

Regarding the issue of personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies, Persoon wrote, “The district office maintains a constantly updated inventory list of PPE. Office coordinators have order forms to submit requests for additional needed items.” All classrooms will receive “readiness kits” during the week of Sept. 21, and the principal added, “We are installing portable and wall-mounted hand sanitizer stations this week; it was done last week at Aliso School. All students will receive a bag of five black cloth masks, intended to be washed on weekends, and we have thousands of disposable masks to distribute if a student forgets or loses their mask.” Teachers can request face shields, Persoon wrote, and she also stated that classrooms will be supplied with disinfectant wipes in addition to hand sanitizer, soap and water, and that daily cleaning is occurring with the Clorox 360 disinfectant machine with all surfaces. “I have attached photos of what the classrooms look like for the hybrid model, with the desks socially distanced,” Persoon wrote.

The principal stated that she has “20 students choosing the independent study option between Canalino and Canalino Family School. Aliso has less than 20.

Rounding up, there are 40 out of 937 students in elementary who are choosing independent study.” And countering the assertion that staff do not want to return, Persoon wrote: “Like families of our students, staff members are all in different circumstances with their families, health, etc. We support the decisions staff make.

The staff have options for leave, and can work with human resources on those options. The majority of our staff intend to return to the hybrid model and are excited to see the students. They remain focused on student learning while maintaining health and safety for all.”

Finally, on the issue of testing, Persoon stated: “CUSD has contracted with Merso labs. This week, 130 staff members are being tested for Covid-19. This will be ongoing. The state requirement is for all staff to be tested within two-month cycles. I myself and most of our staff is getting tested this week.”

For families who choose to pursue independent study, Principal Persoon introduced a program that the district is using called “Calvert.” Students in independent study will have the opportunity

“Teachers have a lot on their plates,” Persoon continued, “and they will be focusing on: 1. Health and safety of students and staff; 2. Quality, targeted instruction to students in person; and 3.

Preparation and execution of Wednesday remote learning and assigning and giving feedback on asynchronous work.”

The principal concluded by mentioning that her children attend Carpinteria Unified School District schools, and that her niece and nephew will be students at Canalino as well. “I am responsible for 600 students and 80 staff members on a daily basis, and I take that very seriously, as does the superintendent, the District Office staff, and the School Board, all volunteers on behalf of over 2,000 students,” Persoon wrote. “It seems to me we most benefit as a community when we work together to solve problems, share concerns, respectfully discuss when we don’t see eye to eye,” she continued. “…Our teachers and staff are top notch. This is an incredible team, and they are responding to ever-changing circumstances.” In conclusion, Principal Persoon added, “You are incredible families, supporting your kids in spite of many difficult challenges.

We appreciate your partnership.”

Cohorts of no more than 14 students will attend school two days a week, wearing masks and working from desks placed at least six-feet apart.

CAC hosts iPhone photography class

Glenn Dubock will teach a Zoom class on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 to 11 a.m. via the Carpinteria Arts Center: “iPhone Photography.” The class is free, but a $25 donation is suggested. Arts Center celebrates “rock stars”

Traditionally, the Carpinteria Arts Center holds a volunteer appreciation party in September but as with so many thing in 2020, this year’s event has had to be re-imagined. Over a seven-hour window on Friday, Sept. 18, volunteers were safely celebrated and thanked together, apart. Arts Center manager Kristina Calkins shared, “we have such an amazing team that gives so much of themselves to our community! Even though we could not host our normal celebration, we did not want to miss thanking all of our incredible volunteers.”

Goodie bags were distributed to volunteers with a “Thanks for being ROCKstars to us” theme. The bags contained masks, hand sanitizer, candy rocks from Robitaille’s and rocks to decorate to add to the “Carp Rockstars” garden in front of the Arts Center.

Ojai Valley Quarantine Cookbook available

CVN columnist Chef Randy has been going stir crazy during the Covid-19 quarantine. So, he looked for things to keep busy with, and (not surprisingly), began creating new vegetarian and vegan recipes.

He reports that the new recipes were coming to him “at an alarming pace—alarming because the refrigerator was overflowing with leftovers (good leftovers to be sure)!”

The result of Chef Randy’s stir-crazy efforts are included in his latest cookbook, “Ojai Valley Quarantine Cookbook,” and he adds that “most of the recipes are comfort food, plain and simple, and seem fitting for the times.”

Shining a light on Lighthouse Skateshop

MADE IN CARPINTERIA B R E N D A TA N Five years ago, Carpinteria High School grads Spencer Navarro and Naren Porter-Kasbati took a chance and opened their own skate shop. At the time, Navarro was working at Powell Peralta and Porter-Kasbati was at the Church of Skatan. They knew the business, they knew skateboard culture and they were ready to create a different kind of skate shop for locals. Today, Lighthouse Skateshop has five years under its belt and is going strong, while Powell Peralta and Church of Skatan have closed.

“In skateboarding, you’d rather shop at the local skate store,” said Navarro, “it’s way better than going to a mall store or online. You go in and the people working actually skate, know what they’re talking about, and care. This is something we needed in Santa Barbara.”

Porter-Kasbati noted he was scared at first. Working at the Church of Skatan, he was able to see the numbers and knew how much they’d need to make to break even, “and I wasn’t sure if we could make it happen.”

Porter-Kasbati studied business at Santa Barbara City College which he said helped him to write the business plan. “I still had the connections from working at the Church of Skatan (which closed in 2014), so we got most of our favorite accounts.”

Finding a location in Santa Barbara came easy as well.

Through a friend’s connection, they were able to start renting a storefront on a handshake, “No paperwork involved,” said Porter-Kasbati, “We decided to take the risk and go for it!”

Lighthouse Skateshop is located in downtown Santa Barbara across the street from the Cabrillo skate park.

For many of their product designs, they collaborate with local artists like James Carson, Chris Austin, Leah Hamilton, D.J. Javier, Griffin Lounsbury and Vincent Lopez.

“We know about every product and brand we sell and educate people who come in,” said Porter-Kasbati. “We help people find what they want to choose. We’re not here to make a buck off every sale, we’re here to help people. Lighthouse is a place where you’re going to get something good. You’re never leaving with a bad board or something set up wrong.”

Navarro and Porter-Kasbati are dedicated to creating an accessible and laid-back atmosphere where all people are welcome. “Lighthouse is a skate hub for the community where everyone’s welcome,” said Porter-Kasbati, “You’re not going to be judged when you walk in. Skating is one of those things where it doesn’t matter what color you are or what gender. If you’re cool, it doesn’t matter where you’re from. A lot of shops have a bad stereotype of having a harsh vibe. Sometimes you walk in and they’re reading a magazine or watching a skate video. We knew we didn’t want to run our shop that way.”

“It’s a place to learn about skating, talk about skating, to hang out and just feel comfortable,” added Navarro.

“We want people to feel welcome and not like they’re intruding on our hang out spot.”

Navarro and Porter-Kasbati have been skating for a little over 20 years. Since there hasn’t been a skate park in Carpinteria, they grew up visiting Santa Barbara or Oxnard on the weekends. Porter-Kasbati recalled, “we would go to the skate park and meet the people there that were really into skating. There were a few skate shops in Santa Barbara that we would hang out at, buy boards, get to know the local skaters, and skate behind the shops. The older guys there would joke around with us and give us advice. I feel like we learned a lot just by having a place to go to. We learned a lot by having skate shops to go to, and we wanted to have our own shop to influence the next generation of kids.”

Unlike traditional sports, skate boarding doesn’t require a team. The only thing you need is a skateboard.

“You can just skate down the street or jump down the biggest stair set and have a blast, there is no limit,” said Porter-Kasbati. “You have full artistic and creative freedom. You can do the craziest stuff or dork around and anything in between. It’s this euphoric moment of pure enjoyment where you’re able to push yourself and make yourself a better person. So many things are so scary and cause so much fear but when you conquer them, it’s the best feeling ever. There’s such a strong feeling of happiness. It makes you want to keep going and keep

pushing it. You can just show up and go do it and make friends and instantly be part of a whole community just by caring about something like that.”

For Navarro, “skating is the freedom of doing whatever your mind wants you to do. You can think of something and just go do it. You can visit new skate parks in new towns, everything is always changing if you travel around. Everyone has their own take on it, they have their own tricks and their own things they like to do on a board.”

Lighthouse is also known for the contests and events they throw for the community. Two years ago, Lighthouse returned to Carpinteria to hold a skating competition at Carpinteria Middle School. Porter-Kasbati commented, “we try to bring in the community with art events and contests. One time we hid products around town and posted clues on Instagram. We’ve had art shows in the store, barbecues, water balloon wars, the annual contests we do at the skatepark. With Covid, we’re doing a video contest where you film a skate video with your friends.”

In 1978, on New Year’s Day, a third version of the wedding day’s proceedings was published by the Santa Barbara News-Press. This account tells of a nervous Chaplin taking out the marriage license early in the morning at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. Apparently, when a celebrity appeared at the courthouse, clerks would quickly alert the press. Two names that will be familiar to oldtime Santa Barbara County residents— George Clyde and Tom Kleveland, who worked at the News-Press—jumped into action.

A cat-and-mouse chase soon ensued, but Chaplin’s chauffer was able to shake the reporters and have the Chaplins married by about 9:15 a.m. at Judge Moore’s residence in Carpinteria.

If the national magazine that Stockton cites (she does not name it) is accurate, it is hard to believe that Carpinterians lined Maple Avenue late in the evening after 10 p.m. to star gaze at the Chaplins. Plus, according to the magazine story, Judge Moore did not even know who he was about to wed until the couple arrived!

Rodriguez’s account has the news leaking in the morning, but the wedding taking place in the early evening. Living across the street from Judge Moore, she claims to have been an eye witness to the event.

The News-Press account has them married before stores had even opened their doors to start the day. What we do know is a smattering of facts.

The Chaplins received their marriage license at the Santa Barbara Courthouse on the same day they were married.

They were married in Carpinteria by Judge Clinton P. Moore at his home on Maple Avenue. The Chaplins surprised the world by announcing their marriage several days later in Los Angeles. The Chaplains, according to Chaplin’s own

autobiography, honeymooned quietly in Santa Barbara for a couple of months.

Something else that we know… The original house where the wedding took place has since been remodeled and expanded. It is Roxanne’s A Wish and a Dream quilt shop, 919 Maple Ave. These facts are not in dispute. But, an additional mystery still needs to be unraveled. Judge Moore’s residence in 1943 was listed as 817 Maple Ave. How did it become 919 Maple Ave.?!

More on history of The Spot

The story of The Spot’s history in last week’s Throwback Thursday column created a great deal of discussion in internet chat rooms. Nancy Thompson Dudley and Julie Thompson Jones pointed out that their parents, Cal and Joan Thompson, were co-partners as proprietors of The Spot with Al and Lorraine DeBus. Indeed, Joan and Lorraine were sisters.

After a couple of years as co-owners, they sold their half to the DeBus family. The Thompson sisters’ cousins, Susan and Leslie DeBus, add that their parents, Al and Lorraine, did not want to quit the business in 1970, but that they wanted full ownership of the business and the property at the corner of Linden Avenue and Dorrance Way. The owner of the property declined their offer, and the DeBus family moved on.

Prisoners we are not

UNPREDICTABLE WILDERNESS CHUCK GRAHAM Sleep came easily at Prisoners Harbor on the northside of Santa Cruz Island.

The soothing serenade of waves big and small converged with cobble not far from my dewy tent.

Recent memories harkened back to last winter when waves crashed into my tent, a slight error in judgement that saw everything get wet (including me) in the middle of the night except for essential items such as my all-important camera gear.

Working as a lowly kayak guide requires us dirt bag types to camp for consecutive days at Prisoners Harbor. It’s a mere sacrifice considering I leave Holly, Owen, Avalon and Namena at home for buzzing mosquitoes, island foxes peeing on my tent and crafty, opportunistic ravens that can’t wait for me to walk away and leave my camera pack unattended.

Yep, it’s tough out there sometimes.

However, thinking way back to 1829, when Mexican convicts were barred from touching down on the mainland and instead were ditched at what is now Prisoners Harbor, maybe life wasn’t so bad after all, even during a global pandemic.

For several months, those scoundrels survived on the most diversified isle in the northern chain, until some of them yearned for the mainland, built their own rafts, and supposedly escaped. Not all of them escaped. Some remained, melding into island lore.

Over the centuries, Prisoners Harbor has worn many hats, has held importance to varying cultures, has been restored, and of late, has seen more traffic than it has been used to in the past as minimal infrastructure gradually advances across the Channel Islands National Park.

The second largest Chumash village across the entire archipelago was located at Prisoners. Back then the village was known as Xaxas, and the volcanic isle was known as Limuw. For the Chumash, the natural anchorage was a major trade port and a launching pad for cross-channel travel, something I can appreciate.

Although the Chumash didn’t have to contend with north and southbound shipping lanes, they did cross the channel without a compass and didn’t have weather reports to rely on.

But for all the history and natural splendor, I’m guilty of getting bored out there, even a little lazy, so before each trip to Prisoners I have to check myself. There always needs to be some efforts made to avoid feeling sorry for myself and make the most of each trip, each opportunity—poor me.

I always need to get my roadwork in, either in the afternoon or at first light. Trail running balances out the paddling where towing visitors from beginning to end can occur. I tell myself it’s just another little workout, take advantage of it. Don’t complain about it and turn it into a positive.

I get to make a living from a kayak and with my camera, so when I’m not paddling or going for a run, I always keep an eye out for the rare, the elusive, island

It doesn’t just happen: I need to look for it, but more times than not patience and keeping my camera at the ready, delivers.

A pleasant surprise was the comet Neowise streaking across the night sky of July, best visible after 9 p.m. Shooting beneath the lower left of the Big Dipper, it was a stunning visual as it moved through silhouetted island oaks. Next time it will be seen is the year 8,786, but I wonder what the Chumash thought when they saw it way back from Limuw?

The last couple months saw a good stretch of island foxes along the Pelican Trail, those narrow side canyons offering lots of shade and keeping the largest land mammal cool during some of the warmer days this summer. Some of them were youngsters born this past spring still clinging to their parents. Yet their curiosity always got the better of them.

Twice before dark I accidentally spooked island fox pups resting in the trail next to side canyons. They quickly ran off, but immediately returned, their curiosity gnawing at them. I was grateful as they approached within a few feet of me, bounding in and out of fallen bishop pines and island oaks, feeding prolifically as omnivorous foragers.

My camera pack weighs about 30 pounds. One afternoon I staged a few kayak guides to position themselves at Tinkers Cove, an idyllic natural harbor 1.5 miles northwest of Prisoners. I dropped my pack on the edge of the cliff and let the kayaks drift where they may. When I returned to my pack, I could see 50 feet away something tugging on a strap. It was a fuzzy island fox pup rag dolling the strap, but the pack fortunately wasn’t budging on the precipice. At least the little bugger didn’t pee on my pack, happenstance subsiding momentarily on a lichen-covered crag, a cove away from Prisoners Harbor.

Howard School reopens

PHOTOS BY JASON RODRIGUEZ On Monday, Sept. 21, the Howard School opened for in-person classes for nearly 70 students, from preschool through sixth grade. One of the first recipients of the elementary school waiver program, Howard’s safety plan passed Santa Barbara County review and won approval from the state in order to welcome students to their new school site: the classrooms across the field from St. Joseph Church on Linden Avenue.

At the new site, both the large classrooms and large field help the students maintain physical distance during class, meal and recess time. The comprehensive safety plan was integrated into all aspects of the reopening. Students and faculty were tested for Covid-19, wore face-coverings throughout the day, were assigned to small cohorts to limit potential exposure, followed strict cleaning and sanitizing procedures and maintained social distancing.

Head of School Joel Reed asked Howard families last spring to reframe the idea of social distancing for their children as “appropriate physical distance with close social support.” These priorities and students’ safety, social/emotional well-being and growth were at the forefront during the many months Howard faculty, staff, parents and Board of Directors planned for the return to in-person teaching and learning.

Despite the new routines and procedures, Howard’s new school campus was filled with excitement on opening day, as students experienced in person school life with their friends and teachers for the first time since mid-March. After her first day, second grader Rachel Ransom reported, “It was not a good day... it was amazing!”

After receiving a waiver from Santa Barbara County to reopen, the Howard School welcomed students back to school this week. At right, Hazel Postma enjoys a picnic lunch with her third-grade cohort. Hula hoops help kids know where to sit at a safe distance.

10:57 a.m. / Trespassing / 6th Street A woman reported that she was home and heard a knock at her front door. She looked out her upstairs window and did not see a vehicle that she recognized, and she did not answer the door. While walking through her house, the woman saw a female looking inside her upstairs deck window. The woman yelled at the subject to leave. The woman then met the subject in the front yard of her residence.

The female was working for the Census Bureau. The area was checked and the woman was not located. The caller signed a citizen’s arrest form for trespassing. Follow up to be conducted by patrol.
