Health care workers report 780 Covid cases

On Dec. 22, Santa Barbara County Public Health Department reported 15,198 positive cases of Covid-19, including 264 new daily cases. There have been 150 deaths, including the first pediatric fatality related to Covid-19 a child in Santa Maria . Of the positive cases reported, 780 were health care workers.

There are currently 1, 4 cases that are still classified as infectious countywide, including 34 in the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. The South County region has experienced 425 cases total, including seven deaths.

There were six new cases reported in the South County communities on Dec. 22.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has tested 304,570 people for Covid-19 thus far. For more information, visit publichealthsbc.org.

Over the Christmas holiday week, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County closes to conduct a year-end inventory and deep-cleaning of their warehouses. During the closure, South County community members can receive food from the Foodbank at Grace Lutheran Church, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities Santa Barbara and Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara.

On Dec. 28, the Foodbank will resume normal operations. In Carpinteria, food distributions are held at the Carpinteria Children’s Project every third Wednesday from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

The Foodbank has revived its live call center to respond to increased community need as lockdowns unfold, and to receive requests for emergency home deliveries.

Community members may call (805) 357-5761, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to speak with a live volunteer or, after hours, to leave a message and receive a call back.

93013 Fund distributes round one of Small Business Grants

To provide relief for the small businesses hurt most by the Covid-19 pandemic, 93013 Fund released its initial round of Small Business Grants to brick and mortar businesses in Carpinteria Valley on Dec. 18. Three Santa Claus Lane businesses, Thario’s Kitchen, the Garden Market and incon Beach Bar, ualified for the grants and received no-obligation gifts. To qualify, applicants must have experienced a more than 20% loss of revenue since the beginning of the pandemic. The grants are dedicated to Barry Kaufman and Margo Handelsman for their generosity to 93013 Fund.

“Small business owners have been on a roller coaster ride since March,” said 93013 Fund president Hans Brand.

“Our Advisory Committee wanted to find a way to help as best we could and determined that Small Business Grants given directly to businesses who have lost so much will have the quickest and deepest impact.”

93013 Fund is a program of the Carpinteria Sunset Rotary Club Charitable Foundation that was established in April 2018 with seed money from CARP Growers.

Barbara Hurd celebrates 96 years young

Ken Stendell joins the Water Board

The Carpinteria Valley Water District Board of Directors has appointed Ken Stendell to the Water istrict’s five-member Board of irectors. Stendell is a relatively new resident of Carpinteria, arriving to his new home in 2018 with his wife of 46 years from Palm Desert. Stendell recently retired from a 35-year career as a general contractor, building commercial buildings in the Palm Desert area. Stendell has served on many boards, committees and commissions. Stendell expressed his belief that authentic conversations and collaborative transparent processes are key to making the best choices resulting in the best outcomes.

Residents donate food to Carpinteria Children’s ro ect

A group of local residents organized a community collection of breakfast foods to donate to the Carpinteria Children’s Project on Saturday, Dec. 19. Residents were inspired to help Children’s Pro ect families suffering food insecurity. The Carpinteria Children’s Project helps families with basic needs such as providing food. To receive services, families contact CCP, are referred by public services or the school district.

Cannabis adds $4.2 million to county coffers n rs uar er

First quarter collections of cannabis taxes are in, and they’ve added $4.2 million to Santa Barbara County coffers, according to a staff report presented to the Board of Supervisors on ec. 1 . The first uarter of the county’s 0 0- 1 fiscal year includes receipts from uly 1 to Sept. 30, 0 0. uring that period, the county collected 4. million in gross tax paid by 4 operators, a 1.4 million increase over last year’s first uarter, which grossed . million of 1 . million grossed in Y 019- 0 .

The county has collected a total of 3. million in cannabis taxes since voters approved the tax and it was implemented years ago. Tax receipts have increased each quarter, year-over-year, since the program began. Of 1 1 operators in the county, 4 paid taxes last uarter 3 operators reported no gross receipts and 9 did not report to the county at all. “ t does not appear the failure to file a report is nefarious in intent,” said Barney Melekian, Santa Barbara County assistant executive o cer, at the ec. 1 Board of Supervisors meeting. “ t is likely that many operators did not have gross receipts in the uarter, due to being in harvest season for outdoor grows, and therefore opted not to file. The county would like to make filing reports obligatory whether or not an operator owes taxes for any given uarter.”

Both inland and coastal Santa Barbara

County have caps for the acreage of cannabis that can be planted. n the Coastal one, which includes all of Carpinteria, only 1 acres can be cultivated.

Today, in Carpinteria there are . acres of active licensed cultivation and in Santa Barbara Goleta there are .1 acres.

The inland area of North County can have 1, acres of cannabis. n Lompoc, there are currently 104.1 acres of licensed cultivation Santa Ynez Valley has 9 . acres Santa Maria Valley has 19. and Cuyama has . .

Applications for licensed cannabis cultivation exceed maximum acreage in both areas. Operators have applied for , 43 acres inland and 34 acres in the Coastal one. “Not all applicants will be able to preserve their acreage under the respective caps,” said Steven Yee, fiscal and policy analyst for Santa Barbara County’s CEO O ce.

Santa Barbara County has the second most cannabis cultivation licenses in the state. Of the total 1,31 cultivation licenses in Santa Barbara County, 33 are in Carpinteria. A ma ority of the licenses are in the Lompoc and Santa Ynez valleys, with 9 total licenses. ndividual operators hold multiple licenses for single farms. “ t’s vital for oversight and enforcement to continue to be a growing aspect of this business,” said as Williams, irst istrict supervisor. “Policy needs to work to incentivize playing within the rules

and doing this re uires vigilance.”

The county has recently accepted 3 applications for storefront retail for the eight permits it will issue for retail cannabis dispensaries throughout the county.

Of the 3, two are in the Summerland Toro Canyon area that includes Santa Claus Lane. The county has hired the consultant firm dl to review the accept-

ed applications and present findings by mid-March. n the first uarter of Y 0 0- 1, the county conducted five enforcement actions resulting in the confiscation of 3. million in noncompliant cannabis.

Diamond, Smith sworn in at CUSD Board meeting

Carpinteria nified School Board of Trustees’ newly-elected members Jamie Diamond and Aaron Smith were sworn into their new positions at the board’s Dec. 15 meeting.

The board also chose Jayme Bray as the board’s president and Andy Sheaffer as the board’s vice president.

Hybrid education to continue

CUSD continues to prepare for the reopening of Carpinteria Middle School and Carpinteria High School on Jan. 7, 0 1, according to Superintendent iana Rigby.

However, Rigby said that if Santa Barbara County remains in the purple tier, CMS and CHS cannot reopen for in-person instruction, and that all instruction will remain remote.

She noted that all CUSD elementary schools are still operating under hybrid learning.

“We continue to be impressed with how well our elementary students and staff are following the safety protocols,” Rigby said.

She added that there have only been two positive cases of Covid-19 among the campuses. Over the past two months, all CUSD employees have been tested for Covid-19, and none have returned with a positive result.

“Please continue to do your part in reducing Covid-19 transmissions by wearing a mask, social distancing, washing your hands frequently and limiting social gatherings,” said Rigby.

Santa Barbara County remains in the purple tier, meaning Covid-19 is widespread throughout the county. The county also remains under a stay-at-home order,

CHS Athletics

All high school athletics will be postponed until after an. , 0 1 due to the rise of Covid-19 infections, Rigby stated.

The district received a memo from California nterscholastic ederation C outlining actions moving forward.

All regional and state championship events have been removed from the Season 1 sports calendar. Boys volleyball will also be moved to Season 2.

“By canceling egional and State Championship events, more student-athletes will have the opportunity to participate in a longer season, rather than a truncated season with Regional and State 3 post-season play for a limited number of schools,” the memo stated.

“The C is confident this decision is a necessary and reasonable action for our member schools, student-athletes and school communities in light of the current statewide crisis. This revision to the C State 0 0- 1 Season 1 Sports calendar offers our Sections and Leagues the exibility and needed time to plan for the return.”

City college dual enrollment

The board approved an agreement with Santa Barbara City College for concurrent and dual enrollment for the district’s high school students.

According to the motion, approximately 00 students during the 0 0- 0 1 school year participated in concurrent enrollment classes across five different courses.

Covid-19 update

The regional Stay-at-Home Order for Santa Barbara County went into effect on Dec. 6 at midnight and was expected to remain in place for at least three weeks.

Our elementary schools and small cohorts at Carpinteria Middle and High schools are permitted to remain open. We have continued to prepare for the reopening of CMS and CHS on Jan. 7, however if we remain in the purple tier, we will not be able to reopen in-person instruction.

Santa Barbara County Public Health will guide us in determining the secondary reopening dates when we return to the red tier.

The district has accepted a bid to remove several portable classrooms and restrooms at Canalino. This project will occur over winter break. ollowing the removal, Canalino will only have two portable classrooms remaining—the library and the computer lab.

Modernization for the CHS gym began uly 1 and is now over 0 complete. t is anticipated to be completed by the end of ebruary 0 1. Plans for the new administration building have been submitted to the Division of State Architects. Construction is anticipated to begin summer 0 1.

The Summerland project is currently undergoing review with the County Planning and Development Department as part of the process for obtaining a Coastal Development permit. In addition, the architects are designing the detailed plans in preparation for submission to the DSA. Approvals from these two agencies are required prior to the commencement of construction which is planned for Summer 0 1.

Long-time Savon pharmacist Carl Barnett retires

With over 40 years under his belt, Carl Barnett has finally, but reluctantly, decided to retire from the pharmaceutical profession. Barnett has been a stable health provider to Carpinterians for most of his professional life. e was the owner of Shepard Place Pharmacy, and in more recent years, he has been the manager of the Albertsons’ Savon pharmacy. But on ec. 1 , Barnett hung up his coat for the last time. n his retirement, Barnett plans to move to Grass Valley, California to live out the rest of his years.

Prior to having the goal of becoming a pharmacist, Barnett was like any other young man, studying biology at his local community college, not knowing what he wanted to do with his life. But on one fateful day, one of his fraternity brothers asked Barnett if he’d be willing to move to Arizona with him to study to be a pharmacist. Perhaps it was his youthful spirit or perhaps it was ust out of boredom, but Barnett took his offer and moved to Arizona. is fraternity brother dropped out at the last minute and Barnett started this new life chapter alone.

After graduating with a degree from the niversity of Arizona, Barnett began his professional career in the state. Six months later, he moved back to California. or the next few years, he umped around the Bay Area, working at different pharmacies, eventually landing in Palo Alto, where he found a ob at a Walgreens.

Later, he worked at an independent pharmacy, Preuss Pharmacy, in Menlo Park.

While at Preuss Pharmacy, Barnett learned a lot about the trade, and served as the manager for five years. After the owner told Barnett that he was planning on retiring, Barnett offered to buy the pharmacy, but the owner was reluctant to sell it. rom there, Barnett packed his bags and started to search for a pharmacy he could own.

Although he wanted to stay in the Bay Area, in August of 19 0, he saw that Carpinteria’s Shepard Place Pharmacy was up for sale, and after a weekend trip to Carpinteria, Barnett and his wife arrived in Carpinteria as the new owners of the local pharmacy. They bought a home in Ventura, and later moved to O ai.

Over the next few decades, Barnett’s business ran smoothly. And although there was competition within the business community, for a while, Barnett and the other three pharmacies in town were able to share a solid consumer base. But as bigger corporations came into the city and began shallowing up the independent pharmacies, things got shaky though still manageable, said Barnett. t was when MOs and insurance

The pharmacies in town had to find niches within the market to stay a oat. Barnett’s way of fighting back was through compounding his medicines, or in other words, “the mixing of ingredients and changing them, to change the compound of a product and producing different doses of a product.” Another niche he dabbled in was offering to deliver medicine to customers, as well as offering durable medical e uipment, things like compression braces, bathroom safety products and mobility products. or years, Barnett offered these extra services, which helped keep him a oat.

But in 009, Ahmad ahadhmy, the director of Carpinteria’s Albertsons, offered Barnett a position on his team at the Albertsons Savon pharmacy ahadhmy wasn’t the only one after Barnett, CVS and ite-Aid also gave him offers. e entertained the ideas and even considered retiring then, but ahadhmy eventually convinced him, and in 009, Barnett sold his business to Albertsons.

Barnett was originally meant to stay with the business for four more years after the move, but ended up staying for an additional eight years because he en oyed working there so much. “ en oyed the work, the benefits were great, we had a great team, and ust had fun,” said Barnett. “ really en oy my work, and it was hard to think about retiring, but ’m , so my wife and have been talking and she says it’s time.”

Barnett plans to move to Grass Valley, California after his retirement. e looks forward to gardening and working on his new house. Both he and his wife are looking forward to traveling once the pandemic is over, but until then, Barnett has accepted a part-time ob at a pharmacy in Grass Valley. “ t’s always been a pleasure to help people out, help them with their medication and ust taking care of their health,” said Barnett.

At 72, Barnett is still working hard for the people of Carpinteria after almost 40 years of being a healthcare provider.

Ocean Ranch makes snacks fresh, flavorful and local CVN

MADE IN CARPINTERIA B R E N D A TA N Ocean Ranch Organics started at the Ojai farmers market seven years ago.

Founder Kim Redman was a plant-based chef who specialized in organic cuisine at a yoga retreat center. During her 20 years as executive chef, she created the granola recipes that would later become her signature products.

“As a vegetarian chef, cooking for people who were often not vegetarians, I created my dishes to be bold avored and with interesting twists,” said Redman. “I wanted to provide our healthy grab and go foods to the broader community and so I decided to start packaging some of our products.” And that’s how Ocean Ranch Organics got started.

Redman was inspired to become a chef out of her passion for organic, natural foods. She learned about the organic food movement as a student at UCSB. After graduating, she traveled nationally and internationally to study sustainable agriculture and cooking practices. “Eating organically-grown foods is really important for the health of our bodies and the environment,” she said. “It helps protect the soil, water supply, seeds and promotes biodiversity. Organic farmers are not spraying herbicides, they are pulling weeds by hand, growing the microbes in the soil and supporting the ecosystem. It takes so much more labor than conventional farming because you’re involved in the entire process and is the reason why organic foods tend to be more expensive.”

Ocean Ranch makes their products in an old-school style, keeping things fresh and avorful with hand-made, smallbatch products. Their kitchen in Ventura employs a small, e cient team of bakers that hand-make all their products. They prefer to employ local people as opposed to processing their granola in a food factory. “When a customer purchases a bag of Ocean Ranch granola, they are supporting all the people that have helped create that bag of food,” said Redman.

Their signature handmade style also allows them more control over the process. Ocean Ranch granola is more nutrition dense and avorful than the average bag of granola. Their refreshing variety of ingredient combinations includes hemp seed, quinoa, chia seeds, chickpeas, whole organic raw nuts and seeds, and sun-dried fruits. They also offer varieties that are naturally sweetened with honey or dates for vegans.

“We make fresh, real, pure food that’s not processed,” said Redman. “We strive to create fresh, avorful, nutritious and artfully made snacks and granola that are imbibed with soul.”

Ocean Ranch is also a women-owned, women-run business. “It’s important to hire women,” said Jenn Smith, their

Our business does well because it is run by women. We are a team, and we like to do everything that way.”

On why she chose to create a female-run company, Redman remarked, “we value creating healing and nurturing food that is nutritious and women have an innate understanding of that. I’ve always been about creating friendships and family within the business and providing a place for creativity and opportunity to ourish.”

Ocean Ranch Organics began with selling items at farmers markets and local natural foods stores. Despite opportunities to expand, today they remain dedicated to supporting their local community. Their oats are grown in the Eastern Cascades and their organic honey comes from a family-owned honey business in Arizona. They work directly with small beekeepers around the Americas.

“We want to keep our community healthy and strong and support organic farmers in our area,” said Redman.

Ocean Ranch often collaborates with local businesses. Their products can be found at Pacific ealth oods, Mesa Produce, Lazy Acres and almost any non-corporate grocery store. They recently worked with Lucky Llama on an acai bowl and with brewLAB to create a porter. “The local businesses have carried us these past six to seven months,” said Smith. “We all work together since it’s such a small town. We are also in Whole Foods locations for all of Southern California and some small stores in awaii.”

The Ocean Ranch women emphasize their gratitude for the community’s constant support. “It’s always great to get messages from customers saying how much they love our product and how they get all the avors because each family member has a favorite,” said Smith.

CIF postpones competitive youth sports until Jan. 25

On Dec. 14, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) released an update regarding guidelines for youth and recreational adult sports. Due to the widespread transmission of Covid-19 within the state, CDPH has extended their hold on youth sport competitions until Jan. 25, 2021.

Prior to this announcement, sports associated with the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) were scheduled to begin in-person practices sometime in mid-December and begin competition in late December. But on Dec. 16, the CIF Southern Section made an announcement which confirmed that it would be following the CDPH guidelines to extend the hold on youth competition as well as implementing new guidelines for the upcoming year.

According to CIF’s new guidelines, sports have been identified that can be played at each tier (along with any permitted sports at lower tiers). For counties that have been placed in the purple tier, permitted sports include cross county, golf, skiing/snowboarding, swimming and diving, tennis and track and field.

For counties that have been placed in the red tier, sports permitted are baseball, field hockey, girl’s lacrosse and softball.

For counties in the orange tier, permitted sports are badminton, football, gymnastics, boy’s lacrosse, soccer, volleyball and water polo. And lastly, for counties that have been placed in the yellow tier, permitted sports are basketball, cheerleading and wrestling.

For many Carpinteria High School (CHS) student-athletes the extended hold on in-person practice doesn’t immediately affect them since all in-person conditioning was already cancelled earlier in the season, and wasn’t expected to resume until January, according to CHS Athletic Director Patrick Cooney.

“Students will need to exercise individually to maintain the conditioning that they had built up the last few weeks,” said Cooney, “Luckily, there are many safe ways to exercise rigorously in the community as individuals or families.

If students seek the chance to work on specific skills, then tennis, golf, running and swimming are all permitted even under the Stay-at-Home order.”

C also confirmed dates for season one and two sports. Season 1 sports, cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, football, gymnastics, skiing/snowboarding, girls’ volleyball and water polo, will conduct their season from January to April. While Season 2 sports, badminton, baseball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, boys’ volleyball and wrestling, will conduct their season from March to June.

“The announcements by CDPH and CIF do significantly impact the game schedule for Season 1 sports. Since full practice for most sports will not be allowed until Jan. 25 at the earliest, we are already starting to see cancellations of preseason games and races,” said Cooney.

“Cross country could conceivably make its first Citrus Coast League meet as scheduled if conditions hold and the decision is made to go ahead.”

On Jan. 4, CDPH will determine whether or not it’s safe for students to compete after the Jan. 25 deadline. And on Jan. 19, the CIF Southern Section will release updates of its plans for fall sports championships.

The integration of Carpinteria baseball, 1930

Semi-pro baseball was immensely popular in Carpinteria in the 1930s. It was also, initially, a segregated sport. As the decade progressed, however, teams evolved, integrating year-by-year. Sports have a way of breaking down racial barriers as the players get to know each other on and off the field. Some of them shine and become local heroes. The newspapers of the era – the Carpinteria Herald and the Carpinteria Chronicle – could be counted on to publish box scores religiously, with a summary of the game usually added.

The Chronicle even dedicated occasional columns in the years 1932-34 putting a spotlight on the individual players.

Cy Treloar, one of the Carpinteria Merchants, recalled on a card kept in a picture file at the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History of competing in the Tri-County League. It was comprised of teams from such communities as Santa Paula, Ojai, Goleta, Piru, etc., “much to the interest of the rooters from the Carpinteria Valley.”

We “won more than we lost that year,” said Treloar of the 1930 baseball season.

What kind of baseball? He added, “Sort of sand lot, semi-pro Sunday ball.”

A Mexican team sponsored by the Cerca del Mar beach club played teams from the same tri-county communities, and also teams from the Los Angeles area.

Los Angeles-based Spanish newspapers covered some of those games. A team from Carpinteria, most likely the Cerca del Mar one, was called “Los Carpinteros” – the Carpenters – naturally. One existing newspaper clipping describes a game between Los Carpinteros and “Los Zapateros” – the Shoemakers – a fabled L. A. team. One of the Carpinteria players in that game was singled out for pitching excellence and hailed as “El Surdo Sanchez.”

Surdo means “lefty” or “southpaw.” More on Mr. Sanchez, later.

The team photos that accompany this week’s column are both from the year 1930. As one can see, the Carpinteria Merchants have no Mexican players.

The Cerca del Mar team has no white players. To put this in perspective, in 1929, the Carpinteria Herald announced that a Carpinteria five-team league was formed for all American players, i.e., no Mexicans allowed. Within a couple of years of that advertisement, however, the best of the Mexican-America players were being recruited to represent Carpinteria baseball by their white counterparts. And by 1947, when school integration was achieved as a result of the Westminster Court case in Orange County, and the Mexican-American servicemen were returning from World War II, the formerly all-white Carpinteria Merchants team would be made up of almost all Mexican-American players.

Clarence Peterson, one of Carpinteria’s best ballplayers of the late ‘30s – said he was offered a contract by a Brooklyn Dodgers baseball scout! – said that the Mexican players were much more serious about the game of baseball than his own white sandlot teammates. Indeed, Sunday baseball for the Mexican community was a festive, family environment.

Games were followed by pot-luck picnics on the Aliso School grounds. Peterson liked the brand of baseball they played and would come out to watch. Asked if he ever played against the local Mexican team, he said, “no,” that wasn’t permitted.

One of the most celebrated of the

Carpinteria ballplayers was Pete Sanchez who played through parts of four decades! He is the “Surdo Sanchez” mentioned above. Like the coveted Peterson, Sanchez was on the radar screen of major league baseball scouts. A telegram exits that confirms that the Oakland Oaks were keeping an eye on him. (The Oaks, and other high profile California teams like the San Francisco Seals, Hollywood Stars and Los Angeles Angels served as conduits to major league baseball clubs that in the 1930s played teams as far west as Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and St. Louis to the east coast cities of New York, Boston, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, etc.) Sanchez can be seen in the Cerca del Mar team photo of this column in all of his youthful exuberance. Dozens of newspaper clippings of his exploits on the baseball field still exist in scrapbooks kept by the Ed Arellano family, as well as CVN’s former sports reporter Al Orozco of Carpinteria.

Sanchez was a marvelous left-handed hurler who kept hitters off-balance with an assortment of curve balls and sliders.

By the very early ‘30s, all of the baseball teams in Carpinteria had a place for a player like Sanchez on their roster. The same could be said of another of the Cerca del Mar pitchers, Manuel Bennett, he of the Anglo surname. Others who were quickly integrated were their battery-mates – that is, their catchers – Joe Granada and Val Alonzo. That makes sense. Pitchers and catchers needed to communicate well to be effective, but Granada and Alonzo were also powerful hitters. Second baseman, Martin “Chicho” Moreno, also appeared often in the box scores of the integrated Carpinteria teams featured in the local newspapers of the 1930s.

One of the best remembered moments involving Sanchez occurred late in his playing days, in 1949. An “Old Timers” All-Star game of the best Santa Barbara County baseball players was played at the now defunct Laguna Ballpark in Santa Barbara. Early in the game, one of the starting pitchers was rocked by a barrage of hits and knocked out of the contest.

From the dugout, Sanchez was rolled out in a wheelchair to the pitching mound for a relief appearance. The crowd roared its approval as Old Pete bounded out of the wheelchair, took some warm-up throws and proceeded to restore order. He held the opposing team at bay, and his side rallied for the win.
