BRIEFLY County opens vaccine eligibility to 65+

Residents of Santa Barbara County who are age 65 and older are now eligible to receive their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. This expanded eligibility, effective Feb. 16, allows for local health care providers, pharmacies, hospitals and Public Health vaccination sites to open appointments to those 65+ once vaccines become available to them. Vaccine supplies are still very limited and health care providers are simultaneously ensuring those that received a first dose will also be able to receive a second dose. Appointments will be very limited, according to the county.

Just under 6,000 doses of vaccine are expected to arrive in Santa Barbara County next week, the vast majority of which are slated for second doses. Approximately 11,000 second doses will be administered in the next two weeks. Santa Barbara County currently has over 40,000 residents between the ages of 65 and 74. Appointments will likely become available through health care providers and pharmacies before they become available at Public Health vaccination sites.

Applications now accepted for rental and utility grants

The county of Santa Barbara is now offering Emergency Rental & Utility Assistance through United Way of Santa Barbara County to eligible county residents who have experienced a loss of income due to the Covid-19 pandemic and can demonstrate the need for rental support.

Upon application approval, recipients may qualify for up to $6,000 over three months toward rental and utility expenses. Applicants can re-apply every three months up to a maximum of 15 months. Assistance payments will be paid directly to the landlord and/or utility providers on behalf of the applicant.

There are strict eligibility requirements for this funding opportunity. To apply, the income of a household (all individuals on lease agreement, related or unrelated) must be at or below 80% AMI (area median income). Carbajal reintroduces bill to protect Central Coast public lands and rivers

The Central Coast Heritage Protection Act, a bill that would safeguard public lands and wild rivers in the Los Padres National Forest and the Carrizo Plain National Monument, and would designate a 400-mile National Scenic Trail, has been reintroduced

by Congressman Salud Carbajal (D-CA).

“Pragmatic policies like the Central Coast Heritage Protection Act make a real difference in the fight against climate change, give residents and visitors the opportunity to appreciate the great outdoors, and boosts our recreation economy, all while preserving the plant and animal life that call these public lands home,” said Carbajal.

The bill, first introduced by Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-CA) and then by Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA), was developed with a diverse array of stakeholders and enjoys the support of more than 500 civic groups and leaders, landowners, businesses, elected officials, schools, farmers and ranchers, and recreation leaders. It passed the House twice last year with bipartisan support as part of a larger package of public lands conservation bills but did not receive a vote in the Senate.

County reports 376 deaths from Covid-19

On Feb. 16, Santa Barbara County reported 376 deaths since the start of the pandemic, including 18 individuals in the South County communities of Carpinteria, Montecito and Summerland.

In the South County communities there have been 1,241 confirmed cases. In the city of Santa Barbara, there have been 5,692 cases.

Countywide the Public Health Department has reported 30,991 positive cases with 597 of these still considered infectious.

There have now been over 1,300 infections among the county’s health care workers.

Hispanic/Latino communities continue to be the most impacted group in the county with 17,494 confirmed cases to date.

Nomura appointed to the Cal Cities Advancing Equity Advisory Committee

Mayor Wade Nomura has been appointed to the California League of Cities Advancing Equity Advisory Committee. Nomura was one of three panelists last October for the California League of Cities annual conference addressing advancing equity in our cities. He was joined by Cal Cities immediate past president and Yountville mayor, John Dunbar, and Cal Cities board director and Temecula city clerk, Randi Johl.

The 25-person committee will undertake an informative and developmental process to identify a set of recommended actions and resources to support cities in their efforts to reevaluate operations and services through an equity lens, and reform areas where longstanding racial biases and inequities exist.

“This appointment comes at a very opportune time for our city, as our City Council will be considering this same direction in the near future,” said Nomura.

City disputes costs of County Sheriff’s services

At last week’s Feb. 8 Carpinteria City Council meeting, decisionmakers agreed to formally dispute the city’s contract with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office over significant and unexpected increases to the cost of police services – resulting in a 37% increase in the cost for services over previous years. The increase adds $1.28 million to the city’s police budget, bringing the total proposed annual expense from roughly $4 million to some $5 million.

Annually, the city of Carpinteria contracts with the Sheriff’s Office for police services, including two regular deputy sheriff units. Law enforcement services currently represent about 40% of the city’s discretionary spending.

In a letter to Sheriff Bill Brown which serves as the “Notice of Contract Dispute,” Carpinteria City Manager Dave Durflinger wrote, “the Sheriff’s Office has failed to satisfy its contractual obligation to work transparently and collaboratively with the city in order to avoid unexpected cost increases. This failure, evidenced by the dramatic shift from a 5.5% increase to a 37% increase over the course of a two-month period, frustrates not only the text – but also the spirt and purpose – of the agreement.”

Each year, police services in Carpinteria make up roughly 17,520 hours – hours allocated to the sworn and support personnel required to support two patrol positions, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. However, last March, the city was informed that the Sheriff’s Office would be adding costs for additional patrol time above the agreed 17,520 hours without negotiation or evidence of need over three continuous months, as the contract’s terms dictate, according to the city’s legal counsel Jena Shoaf Acos.

In his letter, Durflinger stated that these overages had not been documented sufficiently to answer the questions, “how much time was worked, by whom, and for what purpose,” information that the city needs to determine if the time was correctly allocated.

Moreover, the city contends that the contract does not allow for the Sheriff’s Office to assess overages on an ongoing basis nor to unilaterally increase the number of hours without negotiation and a written amendment to the contract.

Sheriff’s Office increased the hourly wage rate “without providing any support or explanation.”

“We have a general breakdown of the hours charged in our contract,” Shoaf Acos told the council. “What we’re trying to understand is whether it’s the patrol time ... but specifically, the out of area cars, and what the reason is behind them coming into the city and why the city is charged for those cars.”

Durflinger went on to state in the written notice that the Sheriff’s Office had “breached its contractual obligation to work transparently and collaboratively with the city.” Citing missed deadlines, quick changes to costs, and failing to provide information and data to justify changes, Durflinger called into question the methodology and rationale of the Sheriff’s cost increases, and stated that after an in-depth review process, the city might raise further challenges to “past, present or future conduct.”

“We’ve had a very successful relationship with the sheriff’s department, delivering law enforcement services to the Carpinteria community,” Durflinger said at the Feb. 8 meeting, acknowledging that the city has contracted with the Sheriff’s Office since the 1990s.

“Law enforcement services are very expensive, as you can imagine. They’re the most expensive single item in the city’s budget, currently about $4 million in the 2020-2021 budget,” said Duflinger.

Reflecting on 2020 and planning for 2021

Jim and Betty Stein

Say farewell to Jim and Betty Stein who lived a wonderful life together and raised a family of five sons in Burbank and Carpinteria. Jim and Betty were born and raised in Hollywood. When the Depression hit, Betty moved to Catalina Island while her father was a band leader for the Wrigleys. During the war, Jim was a Merchant Marine in the Pacific Theatre while Betty worked at the Knickerbocker Hotel. In later years, Jim was employed by Canada Dry and Anheuser Bush as a merchandizing supervisor as well as a project manager for Frank Sinatra who owned the company. Preferring to live close to the Pacific Ocean, he spent his spare time collecting antique seafaring and nautical items and transforming them into maritime-themed art installations and decorations, expressing his memories and dreams of life on the sea.

Betty worked for the American Red Cross during the Vietnam War, and later the Tri Valley Special Olympics. She loved animals with a passion and was always happiest to have a menagerie of domestic (some exotic) animals to help fill in the quiet times. Together, Jim and Betty worked on their homes in Burbank, Catalina and Carpinteria. For Mother’s Day in 1971, Jim gave Betty a baby Capuchin Monkey, naming it “Siwa.” This monkey not only became Betty’s one and only daughter, she was the only other girl in the family – living for 38 years!

Jim and Betty were an integral part of the first group of Carpinterians to facilitate the purchase of the Carpinteria Bluffs, helping to preserve it as “open space” for future generations. They instilled this sense of community service and volunteerism in their five sons.

Jim passed away in 2015 and Betty last Christmas. They are survived by their sons, Jeffrey (Theresa), Keith (Carol), Brad (Carla), Jerry (Yvonne), Thomas (Marla and Cyndi). In addition, they are survived by 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Jim and Betty Stein will be missed. They wove a fine thread in the fabric of our lives that is appreciated and for which we are truly grateful.

Our agency has quickly taken steps to minimize our staff’s exposure to the Covid-19 virus and avoid impacts to our workforce. We will continue to remain closed to the public until further notice, but we can assure you that there are no pandemic related impacts that will affect customer service. In 2020, we made great strides on the Carpinteria Advanced Purification Project (CAPP), development of our Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) and modification of our water rates with more progress to come in 2021.

CAPP will provide the Carpinteria Valley with a drought-proof water supply that will add an additional 1,000 acre-feet of water to our existing water supply portfolio. During a drought, our surface water and state water supplies are limited, and groundwater pumping increases.

By replenishing our groundwater with purified water, we can continue to meet water demand for our customers during periods of drought.

In 2020, we worked toward resolving permit issues with the state, applied for a State Revolving Fund (SRF) and pursued grant funding for the project. Last year, we were listed as an agency under the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF) that was eligible for partial funding for CAPP. We are happy to say that in 2021 we were notified that CAPP was approved for full funding, which is anticipated to be around $30 million.

This year we expect to resolve permit issues and enter into a loan agreement with the state. We are also hopeful that in 2021, as the pandemic becomes more controlled, additional grant opportunities will become available. It is our goal to have 50% or $15 million of the project covered through grants.

Through the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), high- and medium- priority groundwater basins are required to form a Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) and develop a Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) to sustainably manage a groundwater basin.

The Carpinteria Groundwater Basin was classified as a high-priority basin in 2019.

In 2020, a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) consisting of Carpinteria Valley Water District, the city of Carpinteria, Ventura County and Santa Barbara County Water Agency was formed and designated the exclusive GSA for the basin.

Last year, CVWD was awarded a $1.9 million SGMA grant to help cover the costs associated with preparing our GSP, which we began working on last July along with updating our groundwater model.

In 2021, we will continue monitoring water quality at our sentry wells near Spindrift Lane and will perform an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey along the beach and Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve to help us better understand the saltwater and freshwater

interface along the coast in Carpinteria.

This year, we also will be drilling a nested monitoring well at El Carro Park. The ERT survey, new well and continued water quality sampling will provide us with a body of information that will help to inform and develop the GSP. As you may have noticed, a few changes went into effect on our bills at the beginning of 2021. While we adopted new rates including a new Operations and Maintenance charge for our agricultural customers and a reduced drought charge at the beginning of the fiscal year in June 2020, these rate changes were not implemented until the beginning of 2021 due to pandemic concerns. In 2021/22, we expect to modify the rate structure with the assistance of our rate consultant Raftelis. We are currently in the process of developing a rate case for Fiscal Year 2022 and will have a rate study ready for public review in June of 2021 and look forward to hearing any public comments on the proposed rates and changes.

CUSD sees budget savings with some schools closed

Carpinteria Unified School District Assistant Superintendent Maureen Fitzgerald provided the board with updates to the district’s budget for the current and upcoming school years during the CUSD board meeting on Feb. 9.

The total general funds for the 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23 school years are projected to have larger ending fund balances than the district has seen before, Fitzgerald said, a fact she attributed to remote learning.

“We have been able to, even in the first interim, realize some budget savings,” Fitzgerald said. “(Since) we have been closed, we don’t have the costs happening to the same extent that we would if we were open to k-12, a full student body, full athletics . . . That’s not a good thing, but it has afforded us to be able to put money into our fund balance.”

Fitzgerald also went over the estimated future costs for the district. For the 2021/22 school year, the cost of a classroom aide will be approximately $46,225; a custodian will cost $86,700; and a teacher will cost approximately $110,185.

According to the documents provided at the meeting, the lowest cost for a CUSD teacher is estimated at $76,764, while the highest is estimated at $132,022. These numbers include salary and benefits.

For the 2021/22 school year, property tax projections in Carpinteria are estimated at 5.23%.

The district also projects a revenue of approximately $33,052,190 for its total general fund, compared to $32,185,538 in expenditures.

United Boys and Girls Clubs offers “intense intervention” for school kids

Michael Baker, CEO of the United Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County, provided an update on distance learning at the Carpinteria Club.

Baker said beginning March 6 through the end of the school year, the Carpinteria Club will be open for two hours – from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to aid kids who are struggling in school.

The program will involve two hours of “intense intervention,” Baker said, either focusing on one-on-one learning – depending on the availability of volunteers – or in pods of 14, primarily focused on reading skills. The program is limited to students between first and fifth grade.

“The teachers, God bless them, are doing the best they can, they’re working wonders without having direct contact with the kids,” Baker said. “Unfortunately, across the country… there are still a lot of kids falling behind.”

The program will also resume during the school year, with the hope that by the time students “go to normal school again in the fall, they’ll be up to grade level, if not ahead,” Baker said.

“We want to help that gap. We know we have an important job to do to help the district.”

Board members congratulated Baker’s efforts and the program’s progress.

Baker also praised his staff members and the Carpinteria Club for working hard during distance learning, noting that to date, the program has given away $114,710 in scholarships to Carpinteria families.

Board approves contracts for Summerland Tennis Courts

The board unanimously approved the contract with Dudek, an environmental consultant company, for land use entitlement assistance for the new Summerland Elementary School tennis court project.

The services will cost $7,350.

Dudek will help with permit application preparation and assist with the application process to get the tennis courts approved by the county of Santa Barbara, according to the background information provided during the meeting.

The board also unanimously approved a contract with Kruger Bensen Ziemer Architects for design services for the project, at a fee of $56,870.

At the board’s Jan. 12 meeting, the board accepted a $1.3 million grant to replace the Summerland Elementary School tennis courts, courtesy of the Manitou Fund. The fund is run by Nora McNeely Hurley, longtime Summerland resident.

Donations to CUSD

Two organizations donated money toward science materials for the district, per an announcement at the board’s Feb. 9 meeting.

The Carpinteria Education Foundation donated $15,000 to the district for science kits for students at Carpinteria Middle and High schools.

Chevron also donated $10,000 for science materials district wide, including Merge Cubes – holographic toys that immerse students in augmented reality technology – and any other expenses.

Covid-19 vaccines

The Santa Barbara County Superintendents sent a letter to California Governor Newsom requesting “priority vaccinations” for the county’s educators and childcare workers, according to Carpinteria Superintendent Diana Rigby.

During the Carpinteria Unified School District’s Feb. 9 board meeting, Rigby said the superintendents, who represent 26 districts, are urging Newsom to make childcare providers and educators a “critical group of public servants” – a priority group for vaccines.

In Fall of 2021, Carpinteria Unified School District will begin a dual language immersion (DLI) program at Aliso Elementary School under the leadership of Aliso’s principal, Dr. Michelle Fox, and her team. In the program’s first year, there will be one kindergarten class.

Canalino Elementary School principal, Jamie Persoon, and her team launched a DLI program in the 2017/2018 school year with two kindergarten classes. That original cohort of 48 students – one-third English speaking, one-third Spanish speaking and onethird bilingual – are now third graders.

With two classes in four grade levels at Canalino, there are now 192 DLI students at CUSD, and soon to be more with the launch of Aliso’s program.

“The goal of dual language immersion is for students to gain fluency in the target language, Spanish, and have bilingualism and biliteracy in both Spanish and English. Ultimately, the goal is for all DLI students to graduate with the seal of biliteracy, verifying their skills in both languages in addition to their high school diploma,” said Persoon in a release Sunday.

While DLI is open to all students who express interest, the program is intended to be especially helpful for

native Spanish speakers who benefit from gaining academic language and literacy skills in their native language while acquiring mastery of grade level standards in English as well. DLI seeks to increase the number of English learners who are reclassified as Fluent English Proficient by the fifth grade.

CUSD hopes to include more families in the upcoming kindergarten class by increasing access to the DLI program at Aliso, Persoon said. Since the passage of Proposition 58 in 2016 (which effectively repealed the English-only requirement in California schools), the number of DLI programs around the state and within the county is rapidly increasing. CUSD will continue to strategically plan for implementation through middle school and high school.

There will be more information available to families during a Zoom meeting about CUSD kindergarten options and registration on Thursday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m. for English-speaking families and 6:30 p.m. for Spanish-speaking families. You have to be looking in the right place at the right time to actually see a birth. Moms do not always show signs that birth is imminent, and delivery is usually very fast. However, births are accompanied by blood and from minutes to up to an hour after giving birth, seals will deliver the afterbirth.

Seagulls flock around to fight for the afterbirth, and Mom will chase them away if they come too close. Mom is attentive to the new pup, and usually engages in nose tapping with the pup. There are usually lots of onlookers who enjoy seeing a new birth – though surrounding seals seem indifferent.

The viewing area at the overlook is small, and at times people are crowded together. Over the weekend, it was common to see 25 people at a time enjoying the seals. Please consider others, wear a mask, try to distance, and limit your time if there are many other people on the overlook.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups. Volunteers ask that dogs remain outside the rope area at all times.

The DON of a new generation of volunteers CVN

MISSION POSSIBLE LAUREN GRAF While some may consider Carpinteria High School students Sierra Mayoral and Laura Flores the future of volunteering in Carpinteria, the two young trailblazers are making a difference in their community today.

The co-leads of Carpinteria’s chapter of Diversify Our Narrative (DON) are advocating for diversity and inclusivity in Carpinteria’s classrooms. “We have been so lucky to be supported by amazing educators who have begun implementing at least one novel by a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) author about a BIPOC story,” Flores said.

The two have partnered with the Carpinteria Public Library to host the DON book club, choosing books written

by BIPOC authors featuring diverse protagonists. The book club is held every last Friday at 3:30 p.m. This month, the club will be meeting virtually to discuss Tiffany D. Jackson’s “Allegedly.”

In July of 2020, a friend told Mayoral about Carpinteria’s new DON chapter and she instantly connected to their aim to petition the school board to mandate more inclusive literature curricula.

“As an avid reader for as long as I can remember, and (as) a bicultural and multi-ethnic person, this goal was something that immediately became important to me,” Mayoral said.

Mayoral jumped in as the research co-lead, alongside member Jillian Stineman, compiling a spreadsheet of books categorized by grade level and BIPOC experiences. Mayoral has attended school board meetings and represented DON at a meeting last summer.

Beyond championing inclusive education, Mayoral has a deep passion for the arts, inspiring her to volunteer at both the Carpinteria Arts Center and the Alcazar Theatre.

Do you find any intersection between why you volunteer for both the arts and DON? The biggest intersection for me between my volunteering in art and theater and with DON is the aspect of storytelling. Our main focus for DON is diverse and anti-racist literature. Books and literature have the power to tell stories, just like art and theater, and it’s important to

What kind of community response did you receive when you and your team began your work with DON? Overall, I feel like we’ve gotten a good response from the community. Our petition has 556 signatures from supportive students, teachers, parents and alumni.

The school board unanimously voted to pass the first-ever multicultural literature class at CHS. The public library does a monthly book club in partnership with us and the Friends of the Library generously provides 10 free copies of the book club books every month. Even though we have had some pushback, all the support that we’ve gotten has been really amazing.

How do you see DON growing in the future?

Right now, the majority of our DON chapter is made up of high school juniors, seniors and even a few college students.

We are all passionate about DON, but realistically when we all move on to college, we will need fresh faces to continue this work. We’re working on getting more underclassmen and middle schoolers involved so they can eventually move into leadership roles. I hope that in the next few years, DON continues to promote discussions about diversity and race in our education and community, with whoever is willing to do that work.

What would you say to someone your age who is looking into volunteering?

I know it can be hard to figure out where to start when it comes to volunteering. In high school, you’re assigned your mandatory number of community service hours in order to graduate. This can be really daunting. My suggestion to people my age is to volunteer with something you’re really passionate about. I got my community service hours volunteering with the Carpinteria Arts Center and the Alcazar Theatre. The work I did there was really fun for me; the community service hours were just a bonus to the work I was doing.

Flores was introduced to DON by a friend and quickly connected to the organization’s cause, having seen a lack of representation in her classes firsthand.

She helped spearhead Carpinteria High School’s new senior multicultural literature course after speaking at several CUSD meetings on behalf of DON. Participating with DON has helped Flores pursue her future plans to contribute to different advocacy campaigns. She has also assisted as a student poll worker for both the March and November 2020 elections.

A “product of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria,” Flores has given back to the place that made her the young woman she is today. She began volunteering at Girls Inc. before starting high school and continued volunteering throughout the years. Recently, she was accepted to the Girls Inc. National Teen Advocacy Council alongside 11 other girls from across the country.

Why has Girls Inc. of Carpinteria been such an important place in your volunteering?

I first started my journey at Girls Inc. when I began the sixth grade. At the time, I knew very little about myself and the world around me. Girls Inc. gave me the tools and the skills to be the person I am today. They gave me a safe space to ask questions, challenge norms and be myself. I try to embody every day what

How did you identify advocacy and education as important causes in your life?

I was first introduced to advocacy during my time at Girls Inc. as well as the Celebrating Adversity, Diversity and Education (CADE) club at Carpinteria High School. I familiarized myself with different injustices, and education just always really resonated with me. I remember learning about different inequities when I was in middle school and thinking, “I want to be part of the solution.” There are so many issues that I am passionate about, but education has always felt the closest to home since I want to become an educator in the future.

How has it been working with the library to create the book club?

Our local library has been amazing about supporting our mission. Just recently, we were able to put Blanca Ramirez, our librarian, in communication with some of our teachers so she could give more students information on how to get a library card. This way, students will have more access to diverse novels outside of school. Also, it was through the library that we found out about the Book Nook for CVN where we recommend a diverse novel every month.

To vote or not to vote. That is the question! Carpinterians have been voicing their opinions opposing the city’s proposed 99-year lease of our Beach Parking Lot #3 to a hotel developer in numbers above and beyond anything the City Council has seen in many years.

No matter one’s position on the subject, putting the issue to a vote of the people is the only fair way to verify the wishes of Carpinterians. It removes all doubts and any wrong turns. Everyone should embrace voting, including the developer.

I am pleased that the council is in discussion to put the Surfliner Inn to a ballot. Although many in the capacity of ruling seem sold on the soundness of this project, some of the people who vote in Carpinteria are expressing valid concerns.

I am one who is not in favor for many reasons. I thought I recognized the Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica flavor of the design and wished they had presented something more in a Carpinteria flavor. Then there is the parking aspect, the city’s resistance to resistance, Parks and Recreation’s insistence, and the developer’s expertise in permitting and strategic consulting. However, as Councilmember Carty believes, roughly restated, if the people of Carpinteria want it I will say so be it. In all fairness, let’s vote.

I support the Surfliner Inn and believe that it will enhance Carpinteria as a charming, beautiful beach community.

May I just comment on how much I have enjoyed reading Coastal View News in the past four weeks! Some of the highlights for me were the articles, “Thankful for the Franklin” with photos and commentary, and “Soaring over Rincon” about paragliders above Rincon Point. I also love reading the “Made in Carpinteria” column about the shops and businesses in the area. The article about the return of Channel Islands Surfboards was very inspiring. So was “Outdoor fitness booms in Carpinteria,” and the article about the group who swims in the ocean locally on Sundays.

I could go on and on, but you get the picture. I got way too involved in the acrimony of the election, and the drama of Covid in 2020. I promised myself that I would let go of that in 2021. I promised myself that I would count my blessings, send love to my neighbors and focus on what we have in common, rather than our differences. How fortunate I am to live in this wonderful town! Carp Rocks brings a loveliness of ladybugs to State Beach PHOTOS BY ROBIN KARLSSON

It was a lovely day for an open-air Carp Rocks gathering of hand-painted lady bugs. Led by Danielle Bordenave, who organized the Valentine’s Day event at Carpinteria State Beach, painters brought 496 rock ladybugs painted in a variety of styles and colors. The ladybugs were placed along the side of the boardwalk, creating a 90-foot line of brightly colored ladybugs. “I decided it would be fun to do a ladybug line,” said Bordenave, “and then when doing some research, I learned that a group of lady bugs is called a ‘loveliness,’ so it seemed perfect for Valentine’s Day.” After making the ladybug line, the group set off to hide most of the “love bugs” around town to bring delight to each of the lucky people who find one.

Pandemic puts Peace Corner protests on pause

In October 2002, a group of local anti-war activists started standing in protest every Friday afternoon at the corner of Linden and Carpinteria avenues. Eventually, people started calling the spot “Peace Corner,” and the name stuck.

A few weeks ago, on Jan. 22, the group was out for the last time this year. Participation has ebbed and flowed over the years, and for James and Barbara Finch, two of the group’s most stalwart participants, 18 years and 900 Fridays was enough. “We have a new president, new peace and new hope, so we decided to stop,” said Barbara.

For others, it’s the pandemic that has made the protests untenable and after Covid-19 is quelled, they hope to be back out there.

Among the original Peace Corner protestors are Kathleen Lord, Al Clark, Betty Songer, Ted Rhodes and the late Bud Fink.

The group carried handmade signs to the corner each week, rain or shine. James and Barbara Finch joined early on; Toni Stuart joined around 15 years ago; and Robert Lehman started showing up at the corner each Friday a few years ago.

The first Peace Corner protest was during the run-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq after 9/11. The group was driving weekly to protests and marches in Santa Barbara and decided that driving was not ecological and that protesting in their hometown of Carpinteria made more sense.

“It was a big decision,” said Lord. “In Santa Barbara, we were anonymous – part of a big group. In Carpinteria we were not. In Carpinteria people know one another. Political opinions are rarely part of the community dialogue.” But Lord said that over the years Peace Corner helped open up Carpinterians to learning about alternative voices, and ultimately served as a “catalyst in creating a ‘protest’ and ‘free speech’ zone for Carpinteria.” “A

For the most part, the group was well-received and from the beginning passersby would flash peace signs and cars would honk as they drove by. Stuart recalls a Friday where they received 70 honks in one day, “I’ve been heartened by all of the positive responses we’ve gotten… a lot of people and their kids would give us the thumbs up and the honkity honk.”

Over the years, the group did receive some middle fingers though, and were hollered at to “Get a job!” more than once. The latter brought a smile to Stuart,

a retired Episcopal reverend, who noted that she is 83 and just about everyone at Peace Corner was retired and in their 70s and 80s.

Rhodes recalled the early days as “more of a silent peace protest/vigil against our illegal involvement in Iraq following 9/11,” and noted that a few of those in the early gatherings have since passed away, including Bud Fink, Sandy Doles and Royce and Millie Stauffer.

While Rhodes wasn’t going to the Friday gatherings at Peace Corner the last few years, he remained supportive of the group, saying, “Needless to say, so much in so many arenas is now on hold (if not sadly forced out of business) by this pandemic. Ironic that we have had to stop the Peace Corner gatherings but remain, as a country, unable to stop that ongoing war effort in Afghanistan and that part of the world.”

Low key anniversary Angela and Jeff Sturdivan celebrated 22 years of marriage on Nov. 21, 2020. Jeff had planned to surprise Angela with a getaway to a Montecito Airbnb but that romantic vacation fell through when the Airbnb was cancelled because of Covid restrictions. Without missing a beat, Jeff was able to put together a homespun day of romance for Angela which included breakfast, a horseback ride on the beach and watching the sunset.

“The weather was perfect, and it was nice to get out into the fresh air and enjoy the horses and beach,” said Angela. “Even though we were only a few miles down the road, we felt a relief from the daily stresses we had been under and were grateful to have the opportunity to celebrate our marriage.”

The Sturdivans met at UCSB and moved to Fresno after graduation before returning to the area to live in Carpinteria in 2009. They have three children, Dominic, 21, Brady, 19, and Nina, 17, who is a student at Carpinteria High School.

“What stands out to me during our married life isn’t any big moment, but the numerous small ones that happen daily where we are humbled by the life that we are privileged to live together,” Angela said. “Some of the hardest times have been the ‘best’ times because it is then that we have been able to be appreciative of how one is strong when the other is weak.”

Kenna Mayer shines on and off the field

With equal parts grit and grace, Kenna Mayer of Carpinteria High School has earned this year’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Year award.

The 17-year-old high school senior has competed on the girls’ soccer, softball and cheer teams for four years while also carrying a 4.06 GPA, but most impressive of all is Mayer’s character, work ethic and team spirit.

Mayer first set foot on both the soccer and softball field at just four years old, nearly 10 years before she would make her debut as a freshman at CHS. “During her tryouts freshman year, she stood out not only due to her skill but also her attitude,” said Charles Bryant, Mayer’s soccer coach at CHS. “There was, and is, no ego to her. She just went about her business, did the tasks that were asked of her but at a different level than even a majority of the returners, and easily claimed a roster spot and starting position on our eventual playoff bound team.”

Before the pandemic, Mayer’s days looked like those of every student athlete – school, practice, homework, sleep, repeat. “It definitely took a while to get used to,” Mayer said of her transition into high school athletics and academics. “My freshman year I was very overwhelmed with the workload of high school. Coming from middle school (it) was a drastic difference.” Nevertheless, she adjusted quickly and has since established herself as a leader both on her teams and in the campus community, balancing a rigorous course load and supporting her friends, peers and teammates along the way.

Mayer has not competed since March of 2020 and it’s unclear whether she’ll be able to return to the field to close out her senior year, but the lessons she’s learned

will continue to shape her perspective and outlook long after her high school days are over. “I’ve learned you have to work hard to get what you want, and to be what you want to be,” Mayer said.

Mayer plans to pursue forensic psychology in college. As she looks forward to devoting all her time to her studies, she also reflects on how much sports have taught her over the years. “It’s really sad for me because I didn’t know how much I really loved sports,” Mayer said. “I didn’t know how much I really needed the activity and going outside and hanging out with friends, and just having that stress relief.”

When asked about her biggest inspirations, Mayer named her parents without hesitation. “Their support is incredible, and I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for them and their support,” she said. “They definitely paved the way on how I act and how I want to be, and that starts now.”

She also thanked her teachers and coaches at CHS, especially Bryant. “He’s a coach when he needs to be and he’s a friend when he needs to be,” Mayer said.

“He’s the one that really pushes me in my sports to be my best, and even when I don’t want to do it or if I’m feeling especially lazy, he pushes me.”

As of now, none of Mayer ’s three sports have returned for practices or games. The cheer team meets over Zoom, and she’s hopeful that outdoor, sociallydistanced, no-contact workouts with the soccer team can begin again soon as well. No matter what the future holds, however, Mayer’s memories made and lessons learned as an athlete will last a lifetime.

Dual Language Immersion brings a myriad of benefits CVN

A MONTHLY MUSE MELINDA WITTWER In high school I took Spanish for two years and then switched to French in college. Needless to say, I have a very limited vocabulary in both languages. Actually, one of my secret life goals is to spend six months in Mexico or Spain and try to absorb more language than “buenos dias” – that is, if Covid-19 ever lets us travel again. So, I was quite pleased to learn that the Carpinteria Unified School District will offer a Dual Language Immersion program (DLI) at Aliso in the fall of 2021.

Perhaps some of you older residents will remember there was a DLI program started here years ago at the Early Childhood Center at Canalino. I remember because my son was in the first group of second graders. The students in this class were half native English speakers and half native Spanish speakers. One day was predominately English with help as needed, and the next day was Spanish.

As you can guess, the students mixed socially along lines of girls and boys, soccer and sports, and serious and silly gatherings among other things. It wasn’t

long before my son could even roll his r’s, so I was quite impressed. He liked the class mixture and the challenge of looking at the world through a new language. As the school year ended and my son moved on to Aliso Elementary, I felt this DLI program was successful both academically and socially. But the following year Canalino had an increased need for bilingual teachers due to an influx of Spanish-speaking students. So, the Dual Language Immersion program took on more and more Spanish-speaking students and was eventually changed to ESL, English as a Second Language. I always felt giving up DLI was a real loss to the Carpinteria school district even if switching to ESL was deemed a necessary adjustment.

This may be hard to believe, but I taught ESL for three years. Maybe because it was part-time, I loved this job.

I also loved it because the children were charming and eager and shy and wanted so much to tell me about their lives. I learned how coming to a new country and not knowing the language impacts young students. We worked mostly orally – singing, learning basic vocabulary,

discussing food and families and clothes.

I would pick out books with vibrant pictures to read to my students, changing the words on the pages to ones my students could understand and repeat and repeat and repeat.

By my third year, I figured out what I thought was the best approach to teaching students a new language. First, if students don’t know how to read, they need to be taught the skill of reading in their native language. Second, students need to have a class or classes devoted to teaching the new language; in my case, I taught English. Third, the students need to be immersed in classes where there are mixed groups studying math or history or art or science with at least half of the students being native speakers. And above all, students need to mix socially with native speakers to pick up the correct pronunciation and cadence and rhythm of the language they want or need to know.

And this is why I am excited that Carpinteria schools are expanding the

Dual Language Immersion program.

Research has shown that proficiency in two or more languages actually helps increase your IQ. Also, DLI programs have positive effects on reading test scores and DLI students do well or better than most in comprehending core content. If you look online, you can also learn that DLI programs help students “increase problem-solving skills, embrace cultural awareness and diversity, enhance communication skills, and strengthen self-perception and identity. It is a huge boost to self-esteem and helps students remain connected to their own culture even while they experience a new one,” according to Participate Learning.

Over this past year, it has become increasingly apparent that we are impacted by what goes on globally as well as what happens here in Carpinteria. Language is key to communication and being fluent in two languages gives individuals increased economic opportunities as well as understanding. Therefore, giving our students a powerful way to learn a second language is not just a huge bonus, it’s essential.

Sunday, Feb. 7

Thursday, Feb. 11

A witness advised the victim that his vehicle was hit by a large dark-colored pickup truck. The suspect left the scene without providing any notification of a collision to the victim, which is considered a hit and run. The suspect vehicle is registered to a resident of Goleta.

A man initially called to report a disturbance regarding a subject throwing a box of nails at him. It was later learned to be a “he said, he said” situation. The case was documented. During the investigation, the man’s accomplice was found to be on probation with unrestricted search terms. A search of the associated vehicle and room found drug paraphernalia and stolen identification cards, checks and other cards. The man was issued a citation and released from the scene.

0112 hrs / Traffic Collision / HWY 101 and Northbound Santa Monica Avenue

Units responded to a rollover traffic collision 101 Northbound between Santa Monica Avenue and Santa Claus Lane.

In a single car collision, the driver hit the K-rail and the car began to roll, coming to rest on its roof. The single occupant was travelling between Indio and Santa Maria and may have fallen asleep. She was transported to the hospital. Units diverted traffic for CHP while they investigated the crash.

1436 hrs / Fraud / 5500 block Canalino Drive

A victim reported that she had a fraudulent check cashed from her account in the amount of $1,960.

1706 hrs / Petty Theft / 1890 Santa Monica

A victim stated she had observed an unknown subject take a package from her mailbox. She reported the subject’s vehicle was a “blue Honda CR-V older model.” A records check revealed the vehicle was registered to a woman with an address in Oxnard. The victim stated her residence was located behind a gate, so packages were left near the road and the gate. She stated that she and her mom had been walking the dog and observed the unknown vehicle back up to the gate as they approached. She stated she observed her package sitting inside the vehicle and attempted to contact the driver. She stated she did not know if it was a male or female driver, and that they quickly sped off in the vehicle.

Tuesday, Feb. 9

0655 hrs / Stolen & Recovered Vehicle / 5400 block 8th Street

A victim reported that her 2019 Audi A4 was stolen. She stated she had parked in front of her door, but had left the keys in the unlocked car. The vehicle had Sirius XM, which was able to locate the vehicle in the Concha Loma area. The vehicle was not damaged, and was returned to the owner.

1437 hrs / Drug and Weapon Violations / 5500 block Carpinteria Avenue

A probation search was conducted at Casa Del Sol where a man on probation was staying with two women. The search revealed a baton stun gun, oxycodone and Xanax. The man was arrested for being a felon in possession of the baton stun gun and one of the women was arrested for the drugs. Both were transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

1427 hrs / Stolen Property & Drugs / 4200 block Via Real

1618 hrs / Theft from Auto / 5400 block Carpinteria Avenue

A victim left her vehicle unlocked with her wallet inside. The victim discovered that unknown suspect(s) entered her vehicle and stole her wallet at approximately 0600 hours, however, she did not report the theft until 1618 hours.

The victim’s wallet contained her credit cards, debit cards, social security card and other personal/identifying information.

The victim said she received a phone call later in the day from a subject inquiring about the amount of money the victim currently had in her checking account. At the time of this report, the victim still had not called to cancel any of her cards. The victim’s property was later found during an arrest the following day.

2015 hrs / Battery / 5000 block Carpinteria Avenue

Multiple reporting parties called 911 to report a subject was intoxicated and attempting to fight people. Prior to the deputy’s arrival, the subject punched a victim in the face and fled the area eastbound on Carpinteria Avenue. The suspect was later identified, and deputies searched the area but were unable to locate him. The victim in this case refused to cooperate with deputies and did not request prosecution. The victim stated that he was from Compton and wanted street justice.

A deputy observed a vehicle blow a stop sign at 7th Street and Linden Avenue.

An enforcement stop was conducted, and the vehicle yielded at Dorrance and Elm streets. During the contact, it was discovered the vehicle was occupied by three subjects. Two of the subjects stated they were on probation with search terms and the subjects admitted to possessing paraphernalia. All subjects were removed from the vehicle and detained. During the search, numerous used hypodermic syringes were located, along with methamphetamine smoking pipes, tin foil and heroin. One of the men was found to have two outstanding warrants and was arrested, transported and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail. The other two men were cited.

Carpinteria Valley Baptist Church, a classic Victorian, was originally built in 1888 by J. W. Allen.

Carpinteria Valley Baptist Church Editor’s note: Portions of this nugget of Carpinteria history were written by David Griggs and originally published in the Summer 2007 edition of Carpinteria Magazine.

Many landmarks in the Carpinteria Valley have been lost through the years to redevelopment, freeway construction, fires, or simple neglect. A towering exception to this trend is one of the most historically significant and beautiful structures preserved in Carpinteria—Carpinteria Valley Baptist Church.

As the oldest Protestant church building still in use in Santa Barbara County, it has been home to a Baptist congregation for the last 50 years, but had previously served Methodist congregations in both Carpinteria and Santa Barbara.

Methodists had put down roots in the valley in 1862 when circuit riding ministers delivered sermons to pioneer families under the massive spreading limbs of a magnificent oak tree on the Caldwell ranch. Dubbed the Sunday School Oak, it survives today as a county historical landmark.

Carpinteria Valley Baptist Church, with its huge redwood beams, hand-cut sandstone block foundation, exquisitely ornate stained glass windows and tall, Gothic steeple has stood on the corner of Maple Avenue and Eighth Street for 113 of its 118 years.

This classic Victorian originally was built in 1888 by J. W. Allen at Alisos and Yanonali streets in Santa Barbara for a cost of $2,000. This was when the large congregation of the Grace Methodist Church in Santa Barbara split and established a second fold.

Meanwhile, the Carpinteria Methodists also had established two congregations, although for vastly different reasons. The split here was based on where one’s sympathies lay during the Civil War—with the Union North or the Confederate South. Carpinteria First

Methodist South established itself in 1872 in a small building among the oaks off Santa Monica Road.

Now back in Santa Barbara the Methodists were thinking perhaps they could not support two churches after all, and the Eastside M.E. Church decided to rejoin the Grace Methodists. This left the beautiful little redwood building without a congregation by 1892.

When Carpinteria First Methodist South was offered the edifice for a mere $600 they quickly accepted. All they had to do was move it! Thomas B. Fish offered the lot at the corner of 8th Street and Maple Avenue, and he, along with local ranchers and devout Methodists Gideon and Bernard Franklin and Samuel Treloar, undertook the formidable task.

It would have to travel nearly 12 miles along the narrow Coast Highway, through woodsy Montecito, up and over Ortega Hill, down through the sparsely populated spiritualist settlement of Summerland, around the extensive Carpinteria salt marsh and onto the lot on Maple Avenue.

No small task! But strong faith in their mission, determination, and ingenuity would see a near miracle performed.

First, the men contracted skilled carpenter Josepho Rodriguez to cut into sections the sturdy redwood beams and flooring and dismantle the stone foundation at a cost of $300. Next, special beds were constructed on two large wagons which were pulled in tandem by a team of 20 horses.

In all, 24 trips were required to bring the dismantled church to its new home and anxious congregation.

For an additional $400 Mr. Rodriguez carefully reconstructed the building block by block, board by board, down to the last shingle. So tuned to his craft was this artisan that one could not discern his finely sawed and rejoined seams except upon the closest examination. The hymns of the Carpinteria Methodist Episcopal Church South filled her sanctuary by November of 1893.

Community Church, which is still active today. The remaining small Methodist congregation finally disbanded in 1968.

For the next several years the church served as a private residence for the spiritual and unconventional White family. The White’s were very generous to those in need of shelter, and their open-door policy regarding their home led to rumors of a hippie commune living there.

By the time the Baptists purchased the church in 1971 it was sorely in need of repair. Leaking roof, crumbling plaster, sinking steeple and broken stained glass were all attended to by the energetic Rev. Caldwell.

But age continues to take its toll, threatening the sparkling stained glass

jewels of this Victorian treasure.

Whatever lies ahead for this local landmark, it must be remembered that a church is not just the building, but the people who worship there. The beauty of the Carpinteria Valley Baptist Church is a reflection of the spirit of love and caring by the many generations of Carpinterians who have made this sanctuary their spiritual home.

“The Little Things” – A welcome throwback to 90s cinema CVN

a brilliant investigator – best close rate in the area – but now (in the 1990s) he’s rusting away as a deputy Sherriff in Kern County, California.

Jim Baxter (Rami Malek) is a young, idealistic, hotshot detective in the Los Angeles Sherriff’s Department. He has a bleeding heart for victims and won’t rest until justice is served. There’s a serial killer afoot in L.A. – really brutal stuff – so M AT T D U N C A N Baxter is on high alert.

Meanwhile, Deacon starts to nose I’m ready for the good old days. The nowadays are tough. action and thriller genres, will no doubt be shrouded in a feeling of familiarity.

Whether it feels more like a warm blanket of nostalgia or a suffocating sheath of unoriginality may vary. But it’s there.

For me, the feel of the movie was pretty appealing. Sinister, but not soul-crushing.

Realistic enough, but nothing deeply stressing. Complicated but not confusing.

Idealistic but not preachy. (Well, most of the time. Some of Malek’s lines are a bit much.)

I also enjoyed the acting (I mean, with those three leads, how could I not?) and parts of the bendy plot. For I’d say about 90 minutes of the two-hour movie I felt transported to the good old days of 90s cinema.

But the rest of it was sort of botched, a cheap knock-off of the thrills and chills of movies like “Seven” or “Silence of the Lambs.” The ending, in particular, betrayed the movie. It was cheesy and not half as clever as it took itself to be.

Come to think of it, a lot of 90s movies also failed in exactly these ways. So I guess, in the end, it’s not a 90s movie that I really long for. It’s a good movie. Just as I’d settle for some good 2021 days, so too I’d go for a movie with good atmosphere, both realism and idealism, good acting and a fun, well-executed plot.

Alas, “The Little Things” isn’t quite there.

“The Little Things” is rated R for violent/disturbing images, language and full nudity.

SBIFF announces 2021 plans

Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) announced this week that it is planning an elaborate build-out of two beachside drive-in theatres for the 36th Santa Barbara International Film Festival taking place from March 31 to April 10. The drive-in theaters located at Santa Barbara City College will host over 80 film screenings over the course of the festival, all offered for free.

“It’s imperative we bring a sense of hopefulness to 2021, but in the safest way possible,” said SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling in a release on Tuesday.

The film lineup and schedule will be announced in early March. Passes for the 2021 festival are now on sale, as are tickets for the celebrity tributes. Guests to the drive-ins must RSVP prior to arriving. For additional information or to buy passes, visit sbiff.org.

Film Noir offers a sultry escape

Art in Film, offered by the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center, normally offers six art documentary films at the Alcazar Theater. Due to the pandemic, this year we are going to start our season by offering suggestions for some old and new favorites to enjoy at home.

Film Noir as a style developed in Hollywood post-WWII, allowing movie-goers to escape into moody, cynical, dramatic thrillers and complicated detective plots. Noir films were shot in black and white with chiaroscuro lighting (inspired by the German Expressionist Art Movement in Europe).

Featuring hard crisp shadows and nighttime settings, films of this style feature low angle dramatic camera shots, spare language and the use of light to highlight the villain or flawed hero. Morally conflicted male characters wore suits, hats, ties and polished shoes; and elegant females played the Femme Fatale, gorgeously dressed and coiffed, dangerous and seductive.

Because of the “Production Code” of the time, no criminal could get away with murder, nor could unmarried characters share a bed. Mirrors were used to heighten the suspense and complicate the setting; shadow patterns created suspicion and jealousy.

Gritty city scenes of Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York were often the rainy backdrop for the stories.

Get lost in the drama of sumptuous black and white photography, wax nostalgic for the sharp clothing styles of the day, immerse yourself in the twisted plots and flawed characters.

Get hooked on this genre, which is eye-candy for the film buff, and which right now seems an appropriate way to escape for a few hours in our post2020 world. Let it rain!

Classics of Film Noir include “Maltese Falcon” (John Huston, 1941), “Double Indemnity” (Billy Wilder, 1944), “Postman Always Rings Twice” (Tay Garnett, 1946), “Touch of Evil” (Orson Welles, 1958). For Bogart and Bacall fans, try “The Big Sleep” (1946) and “Dark Passage” (1947). Bacall was 19 and Bogart 44 at the time.

TCM (Turner Classic Movies on COX channel 69) is hosted by Eddie Muller who selects and reviews a Film Noir movie weekly on Saturday nights at 9 p.m.

Library hosts kids’ Lego design challenge

Santa Barbara Public Library is inviting families to participate in a Maker Challenge using Lego kits available for pickup at the Carpinteria Library. The kits will include surprise Lego bricks with challenge prompts to build real and imaginary models, and the project is best for kids age 5-9.

Lego kits will be available for pick up during the library’s Grab ‘n Go services while supplies last. Pick-up hours are Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Masks are required to pick up the kits. All participants will be invited to showcase their challenges and share what they made via Zoom on Saturday, March 6 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The Zoom link will be included in each kit upon pickup, and no registration required.

Carpinteria Arts Center collaborates with Women’s Woven Voices

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center continues to give away free art supplies every Friday in February. On Friday, Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be free weaving kits available. Artist and founder of Women’s Woven Voices Brecia Kralovic-Logan will be present to share about the weaving project which is an international, collaborative art project that promotes the empowerment of women through writing, weaving and sharing. She will also bring one of the collaborative tapestries that has already been created to display.

“There is something so elemental about weaving a piece of cloth. It’s archetypal. It connects us with our ancestors and with many different cultures around the world,” Kralovic-Logan said in a release this week. “It reminds us of our human resourcefulness and resilience. It connects our hearts with our hands.”

The Arts Center has also invited local Girls Scouts and members of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria to participate and will display a tapestry created by Carpinteria residents in the future. Additional details about the project along with instructional videos can be found at womenswovenvoices.com.

Wullbrandt featured at SB Fine Art

From Feb. 20 to April 27, artist John Wullbrandt will be a featured artist at Santa Barbara Fine Art. Wullbrandt is a Carpinteria native and has participated extensively in the community throughout his prolific career, particularly in volunteering with local youth. His recent works showcase his passion for local landscapes, flora and fauna.

Participants in Bellas Artes, a free family program providing art materials and supplies to budding artists of all ages, received Valentine’s Day-themed supplies last week. Zoe Atkins, director and principal instructor for the program, designed and printed information cards to go along with the supplies and distributed them just in time for Valentine’s Day. Atkins has worked with Bellas Artes from the start of her career, helping to host many events at Dahlia Court in Carpinteria and bringing her skills to students, families and the larger community. Bellas Artes was founded in 2004 and is co-sponsored by the Carpinteria Arts Center and People’s Self Help Housing Corporation with funding from the Towbes Foundation and Martha Selfridge.

Local writers, poets and musicians convene at Community Voices Salon

The monthly Community Voices Salon, hosted by the Carpinteria Arts Center will be held virtually on Monday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. Including music and spoken word by local writers, poets, singers and songwriters, this month’s meeting will feature writer Kimbrough Ernest and poet and musician Sudama Mark Kennedy.

Ernest is a retired public-school teacher living in Ventura. She has been published in several anthologies and currently teaches poetry through California Poets in the Schools.

Kennedy is a professional intuitive healer and artist. His mythopoetic and shamanic style connects many inner and outer worlds together. The event welcomes questions and comments and will be moderated by writers Maya Shaw Gale and Cynthia Waring. Zoom meeting login information can be found at carpinteriaartscenter.org.

Morning Rotary pushes forward on Zoom

Holding over 50 meetings in the last year, Morning Rotary members have shared fellowship, planned and implemented service projects for the community, and interacted with exciting speakers online.

The group meets every Wednesday morning from 7 to 8 a.m. Their service accomplishments this year have included providing dictionaries to every third grader in the Carpinteria Unified School District; creating the 2021 calendar featuring daily tide tables; the $10,000 Carp Aid Diem fundraiser to support local businesses; selling sidewalk bricks to support Tomol Park; raising funds to send solar lights and chargers to students and families around the world; fundraising for Polio eradication and Foodbank distributions, to name a few. More events are being planned for the spring.

Recent speakers have included Jason Lesh on the Farm Cart, Aaron Crocker on financial planning, Ken Beurmann on understanding millennials, Daniel Cook on the California condor population and Petra Beumer on mindfulness.
