HELP CONFRONT THE CHILDCARE CRISIS

$150K RAISED $50K TO GO

HELLO NEIGHBORS & FRIENDS We hope you’ve heard of the 93013 Fund and the work it has done in the community in response to COVID-19 and the health, social and economic issues that have come with the pandemic. This fund brings together community leaders to address issues in real time. Through local partnerships and fundraising, we served 40,000 meals in the months of April, May and June and delivered 500 homeschool supply kits to Carpinteria school children.

On the advice of the 93013 Fund Advisory Committee, we are renewing our drive to raise funds and meet community needs. The pandemic persists, and childcare is an urgent need in the community.

School will not be reopening in the fall, and working parents have already been hit hard. Kids are missing important developmental milestones. Parents’ finances are disappearing.

93013 Fund hopes to raise $50,000 to provide scholarships at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, Carpinteria Children’s Project and Boys & Girls Club of Carpinteria.

At the request of Carpinteria Unified School District, we also plan to purchase more homeschool supply kits

— paper, pencils, crayons, scissors and more — to support distance learning this fall. Many students lack basic materials to study at home.

We have an opportunity as a community to support children, families and nonprofits with these fundraising efforts. Children will get safe, affordable care and enrichment. Parents will get some relief from childcare expenses as they regain financial stability. Youth-serving nonprofits will get the support they need to continue to serve their clients. Teachers will have a better chance of educating children at a distance if the children have proper materials at home.

When 93013 Fund started down this path in late March, we were able to address many needs very quickly. Impacts of COVID-19 have persisted, though, and needs have changed. What’s remarkable about 93013 Fund is its ability to adapt as experts in the community observe evolving issues resulting from this slow-moving crisis.

Our one and only goal remains softening the blow of COVID-19 on the Carpinteria Community. We do this by working together to have the greatest impact helping the greatest number of people. More than offering food, supplies and relief for families, we offer hope that Carpinteria will come out of this pandemic having endured it as well as anywhere else. We are proud to be part of efforts to make this a reality in our community.

Jr. Lifeguards end early after possible Covid-19 exposure

The city of Carpinteria has suspended the current session of its Junior Lifeguard Program after an instructor reported having come in contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19. The decision was made “acting out of an abundance of caution,” stated the city in their public release. The employee who potentially had Covid-19 exposure currently has no symptoms, is quarantined at home, and will be tested promptly.

To prepare for the possibility of exposure to Covid-19, this summer’s Junior Lifeguard Program was designed with several precautions in place, including smaller groups, two-week sessions, and social distancing requirements. The current session will be closed through its end date, July 31. In addition to informing the community, the city is communicating directly with families in the program to keep them up to date on new information.

Race begins for upcoming City Council election

Five potential candidates have pulled papers to run for two seats on Carpinteria City Council that will be on the November 2020 ballot. The seats are currently held

by Mayor Wade Nomura and Councilmember Fred Shaw. Elected councilmembers serve four-year terms.

Natalia Alarcon, Jason Lesh, Brittany Jordan and Marc Denitz have begun the process of candidacy, along with incumbent Wade Nomura. The city has not confirmed that these candidates qualify, only that they’ve begun the nomination process.

Carpinterians seeking a seat on City Council must file paperwork before Aug. 7.

If one or both of the incumbents does not file, the deadline to file paperwork will be extended to Aug. 12. For more information, visit carpinteria.ca.us.

CUSD urges families to apply to school lunch program

Covid-19 infections continue to spread

On July 28, Santa Barbara County reported 5,931 positive cases of Covid-19 since the county’s first reported infection in March. Over 330 cases are still active and 1,974 cases are currently under investigation to trace the contact leading to transmission.

Eighty people are currently hospitalized with 25 in the Intensive Care Unit. There have been 32 Covid-19 related deaths.

The South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria had 25 new cases between July 21 and July 28, bringing the total of confirmed cases in the region to 125.

In a letter to families of Carpinteria Unified School District students, Food Services Director Michelle Hernandez encouraged the community to apply for the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program, regardless of household income or citizenship status. “When all families apply,” Hernandez wrote, “it helps us in planning to assure we have the resources to provide the best Food Service Program to all of our students within CUSD.” Citing the economic challenges presented by Covid-19, Hernandez requested that families apply for free or reduced-price lunches on LunchApplication.com, emphasizing that social security numbers are “NOT required to fill out an application.”

Porch announces move to Summerland

Santa Claus Lane’s Porch announced that they will be closing their Padaro Lane Village shop and moving to 2346 Lillie Ave. in Summerland in September. To prepare for the move, Porch is holding a moving sale that begins on Friday, July 24. Store hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Between six and 10 residents have tested positive for Covid-19 at GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care.

GranVida residents test positive for Covid-19

As of July 10, six residents at GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care had tested positive for Covid-19, according to the Santa Barbara News-Press. On Tuesday, July 28, the state of California’s Department of Social Services confirmed less than 11 cases and no deaths at the Carpinteria Avenue assisted-living facility.

GranVida has 77 housing units and can accommodate up to 85 residents, though it currently is only caring for 50 adults. The facility has begun weekly testing and established an isolation wing for Covid-19 positive residents, according to the News-Press.

Calls to GranVida were not returned.

KopSun founders Leigh-Anne Anderson, Tina Fanucchi-Frontado and Amy Marie Orozco have announced that they are closing KopSun, the Carpinteria-based cannabis information and health resource. “Due to current times and after much consideration, we have decided to bring our work with KopSun to a close,” said the founders, “It has been a distinct privilege to help change the culture and conversation around cannabis in our local community and beyond.”

Kopsun was formed four years ago, and has provided numerous online and SALE PENDING in-person educational talks and classes for the community.

The magazine, Cannabis by the Sea, created by KopSun will now be published

by Bie & Bie Productions, and KopSun partner Amy Orozco will serve as editor.

KopSun’s online platforms along with their emails at kopsun.com will remain STAYCATION live for the next 12 months.

Tom Koji Yanagihara passed away peacefully on July 19, 2020.

Tom was born in Torrance, California on April 24, 1941. Due to Executive Order 9066, Tom and his family were evacuated from Gardena in March 1942 to Kersey, Colorado. After the end of World War II the family remained in Colorado, but eventually returned to Gardena in 1957.

In 1959, Tom graduated from Banning High School in Los Angeles. In 1963, he was drafted into the US Army, serving in the 6th Army Battery D 5th Battalion 16th Artillery at Fort Lewis, Washington until 1965, and later as a reserve until being honorably discharged in 1969.

Tom’s family moved to Carpinteria in 1968, establishing their nursery business before expanding and moving it to Oxnard in 1985. Tom and brother Harry ran The Plant Mine until their retirement in 2008, after which he spent his time volunteering his skills to the new owners of the nursery and delivering sea urchins for his friend’s business.

Through his adult life, Tom was an avid fisherman and active member of local bowling teams, even once bowling a near perfect 298. He joined the Carpinteria Lions Club in 1972 and was an active member for many years. He was recognized as the Carpinteria Lion of the Year in 1976-1977, served as Carpinteria president in 1980-1981, and District 4-A3 Zone Chairman in 1984-1985.

A gentle and kind soul, Tom became a father and grandfather figure and friend to many over the years, generously giving what resources he had to anyone in need.

He was loved by family and friends alike with his cheery and easygoing demeanor, always loping around in his signature cowboy boots.

Tom was preceded in death by parents Keisuke and Sachiko, sisters Reiko, Jane and Irene, and brother Harry. He is survived by niece Wendy Yanagihara, nephews Jason Yanagihara and Scott Warren, a wide extended family, and dear friends. His steady, reliable presence will be missed by all.

Arrangements will be taken care of

by Ivy Lawn Funeral Home in Ventura.

Due to the current pandemic, the family will hold a small, private service but no public memorial.

People, not machines

I was shocked to see the self-check stands at our local Albertsons market and the Vons in Montecito. Let’s look at this: Checkers and other employees at our local markets have risked their own health and that of their families to be here for us during this Covid-19 pandemic. Now we are going to replace them with machines?

I understand that this is the wave of the future, but please don’t expect these employees to believe you when you tell them it will give them more hours. Who is doing that math? The company will have four check stands with just one live employee there to help and to sanitize the stations after each user, but the company won’t have to pay unemployment insurance, social security insurance, workers’ compensation, sick leave or vacation and holiday pay for those four stations.

I, for one, will not give up the friendships and professional helpers I have come to know and will not be using these selfcheck-out stations.

Request for “PAWsitive” change

I am a 12-year-old Carpinteria student who has been advocating for a dog park for half of my life. I am helping the Carpinteria Dog Owners Group (C-DOG), a non-profit organization with over 300 local members, by writing to gather community support to establish off-leash dog hours at El Carro Park.

When I was in first grade, we adopted a puppy and I was upset to learn that my hometown had no place for my dog and I to play freely and meet other dogs and owners. I started by writing a letter and drawing a picture for our Parks and Recreation Director Matt Roberts. I later scheduled a meeting to talk to him in person about the lack of a dog park. I wrote another letter to the city when I was in third grade. Now, I will be entering eighth grade and we still do not have an area in our town for dogs to be off leash.

Last year, I worked with C-DOG to plan a community-wide dog costume contest and downtown dog trick-or-treating to support local businesses and raise community awareness for our efforts to create a dog park and off-leash hours around town. Now more than ever, it is important for dogs and their owners to have a safe place in town to play together. Carpinteria’s requirements and fees for accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), also known as granny flats, are out of step with state law. In an effort to address housing shortages, several bills have been passed in recent years to force cities to make ADUs easier and cheaper to build. Carpinteria will eventually have to comply with these laws, consistent with requirements of the California Coastal Commission, but for now, the council is stalling.

Last September, they voted 5-0 against the recommendations of staff, to continue handling ADUs under the current standards until the next General Plan update.

It’s a safe bet that not a single ADU has been permitted in the 10 months since, because of the steep fees and onerous requirements. In these days of sheltering in place, of working from home, of children moving back in with parents, I am certain many homeowners in Carpinteria would love to build a little studio in the backyard, like the rest of California can.

creased at 260 percent the rate of inflation since 1980, but what is more staggering is that textbook costs increased by 812 percent during the same period. At Occidental College, the $250 required textbook in one of my political science courses prompted my classmates to spend hours of their week printing out sections of the text from the few who had it.

But this situation is not uncommon, either: in a recent Student PIRG national survey, 63 percent of students skipped buying or renting a textbook. However, students find ways around this problem by purchasing used books, renting library copies and sharing with classmates. Unfortunately, publishing companies have been cracking down on these price-saving methods by bundling single-use access codes with the textbook. These codes are needed to access homework, assigned texts, and even tests.

The solution is open textbooks. Open textbooks are written under an open license, allowing them to be freely shared, and professors can adapt them for their classes. Classes that use open textbooks have seen increased student performance and completion. It is no surprise that students will read books they can afford.

This alternative school resource is by no means a novel idea. University of Massachusetts Amherst and Rutgers University have instituted programs to facilitate the switch from traditional textbooks to open ones. These programs have already saved students millions of dollars.

The easiest step to reducing unnecessary college expenditures is to reduce textbook costs, and there is already a solution that has been shown to work: open textbooks. We need more colleges to implement this switch to ensure all students are able to get the materials they need to succeed.

In my not so humble opinion, Democracy fails when the constituents are uneducated or willfully ignorant. Even the Founding Fathers were skeptical of the masses as clearly indicated by the addition of the Electoral College requirements. And if you don’t understand this, that’s exactly what I mean.

don’t vote” or “I’m not political” or simply “red and blue”—is in charge of your food, income, taxes, healthcare, family planning—in short, your life. If you’re not interested, then you are an ostrich—a dumber than dirt ostrich! Now that’s some kind of dumb.

When coupled with an inept and dangerous fool for a leader, we are doomed.

Or are we? There are more of us, so let’s get busy—rid ourselves of this moronic and dangerous political clown (apologies to clowns), and his cowering masses now leading us on a death march.

I’m so disgusted and pissed off that I can’t be reasonable about anything that kills people, like thuggish cops, or degrades people, or contributes to the wealth disparity, or celebrates hate in any form.

Praise be to the voices in the wilderness: Mary Trump, Adam Schiff, Rachel Maddow, John Lewis, Anthony Fauchi and even the Tooth Fairy has more credibility then the spectacle debauching the White House.

And hey, wear a mask even if you think it’s your “right” not to—and don’t let me see you without one! There are consequences.

Three years to reorient

Rewording the opening lines of the theme song from a long-ago popular TV show, “Those were the years that were. They’re over, let them go…” We need to “let them go” by learning from mistakes in history without making chaotic attempts to erase them or physically destroy them. Our country isn’t perfect and never has been, but we need to be both rational and reasonable about approaches used in the constant search for improvement.

In this regard, I am referencing both political parties when I say we definitely need better people representing us in Washington D.C. Frankly, I don’t think our present educational system is providing young people with a true understanding of U.S. history, including the successes and failures of those who came before us. I believe this is a major reason for our present problems. Our ancestors, living in a totally different era, did accomplish good things and we definitely benefit from their efforts. Consider the U.S. Constitution. Where would we be without it?

Here is a suggestion: Anyone who would prefer to live elsewhere should be offered a one-way plane ticket to that location. In return, such an individual would give up his/her U.S. citizenship and all related services for a period of three years. After this period of time the person could, upon request, have citizenship restored upon proof of a previous three-year history void of problems.

Those who choose to participate in the three-year plan and live elsewhere would gain a tremendous out-of-the-classroom education. Some may choose to remain where they are. However, I speculate that a vast majority of them would want to return and have U.S. citizenship restored.

And, I suspect that after experiencing life elsewhere, they would be good and productive U.S. citizens.

Backstage at the Alcazar: Covid threatens theater’s survival

BY DEBRA HERRICK “Save the theater one seat at a time,” said Roland Rotz to his fellow board members of Carpinteria’s historic community theater on Carpinteria Avenue.

Since first opening in 1928, the Alcazar Theatre has served as a cultural institution for the small coastal village. For over 90 years, Carpinterians have had a venue for locally produced theatrical productions, school plays, lectures, Hollywood film screenings, live concerts and more.

Now, as Covid-19’s devastating impact to the entertainment industry grows with time, the landmark community theater faces cancelled programming, lost income, and an uncertain future.

Since the start of the pandemic, the theater has had to use reserve funds to pay rent and other basic expenses; and if they continue to spend reserves at this rate, the theater might only be able to support itself through the end of the year, said Karen Graf, Alcazar board president, who noted, “We’d be up against the wall, no question.”

To save the theater, it’s going to take considerable support from the community in terms of donations, said board members. “If we continue this way, the reserves will eventually be gone, so we need to look to the community to donate,” said Graf. “We would probably only have until the end of the year if we got no donations at all.” To help encourage

“My hope for Live805 is that we’ll be able to stream important and relevant programming during Covid,” said Graf, noting that the platform has been used to communicate messages to the community from the city and school district, along with talks from mental health experts and others.

“The Alcazar is a venue for entertainment, culture and education,” said Graf, “and it’s been in our community for a long time like a gem. We wouldn’t want it to go away.”

In July alone, the Alcazar had six concerts scheduled, the Rotary Talent Show, several rentals and movies. “We had so many different activities planned for the theater that we shared at our March board meeting,” said Graf, “Of course, everything came to a screeching halt six days later. By March 12, we decided to close the theater and all those wonderful events were canceled.”

Events at the theater, particularly concerts, are money makers for the Alcazar.

“Movies can be too, especially if they are well attended, and rentals—these are also money makers,” said Graf. “So, the fact that we can’t have people in the theater has precluded any income. Zero dollars.”

The theater has been relying on emergency relief grants, community donations and reserve funds to cover basic expenses. At the start of 2020, the board had hoped to launch a summer fundraising campaign to raise money for various capital projects, including a new projector, a new movie screen, a green room to attract

BY DEBRA HERRICK After the second Covid-spurned shutdown of personal care services such as salons, barbers, massage and nail parlors, new state guidelines were issued on July 22 allowing local agencies to permit some of these services in outdoor spaces.

Yudith Alcarez, owner of Yudith Salon on Carpinteria Avenue, said she submitted an application the day after the governor’s announcement but is still waiting for the go ahead from the city of Carpinteria.

Before Covid-19, Alcarez’ phone rang all day and business was good for her and all five of the stylists who rent chairs in her salon, she said. Now, she hopes that she will be able to have at least one chair outside to cut hair. She hopes the outdoor permit will help her offset the business’ fixed costs, such as rent and utilities. Alcarez also spent money in modifying the salon to comply with the partial reopening standards issued in May, prior to the most recent closure at the beginning of July.

In addition to the financial losses, Alcarez has struggled emotionally to cope with the changing circumstances brought on by Covid-19. “It’s been very hard,” said Alcarez, “I’m all by myself. I rent the chairs, but I’m the responsible one. My clients and family tell me, ‘Just focus on you and try to relax.’ But it’s very hard to relax when you are in this situation, especially when you are the responsible one receiving all the bills. I haven’t been able to relax since March. So, when they closed us the second time, I thought, ‘Oh my god, what’s going to happen now?’”

Local “Giving Circle” supports Latino Community

BY CHRISTIAN BEAMISH “We’re looking to lean into our culture,” Guille Gil-Reynoso said by way of explaining the formation of a Santa Barbara-based nonprofit philanthropy group, the Latino Giving Circle. Citing the tradition of community giving within Latino culture, Gil-Reynoso said that she got together with two friends, Teresa Alvarez and Arcelia Sencion, in late 2019 to form the local group.

Inspired by the Latino Community Foundation in San Francisco that helps organize regional Latino Giving Circles, the three women met with other Latino professionals in the Santa Barbara area, including Carpinteria, with backgrounds in education, business and government.

The Santa Barbara County group now has 16 members.

The group selected the 805Undocufund to be the recipient of its initial fundraising effort because when Covid-19 hit, Gil-Reynoso, Alvarez, Sencion and others in their group felt a sense of “urgency in support of the Latino community that has been impacted in disproportionate ways” by the pandemic, Gil-Reynoso said.

“We felt supporting Undocufund805 met our very direct goal of supporting Latino-led organizations,” Gil-Reynoso stated, “… so they can continue doing this tough and challenging work.” Gil-Reynoso also said that Undocufund805’s Latino leadership provided the organization with the cultural competency to be effective within the Latino community.

“Less than one percent of philanthropy goes to Latino causes,” Gil-Reynoso said.

Made with fresh ingredients, Gutman’s empanadas are bursting with flavor and always hand sliced. His attention to fresh food and detail is a holdover from his upbringing. Gutman’s family would go to the grocery store every day. “We never had anything in the freezer and we always ate fresh,” he noted. “My father was a bit of a food snob. For him, the difference between white bread and French baguette mattered. I didn’t understand it when I was young, but I’m grateful for it now because it taught me to pay attention to the details.”

Although he is proud of his culture, Gutman’s not married to tradition. He likes to try new recipes and learn from other cultures. “When I started cooking, I realized that I needed to tap into whatever cultural background I have,” said Gutman. On pre-Covid Friday nights, Gutman would create weekly specials to afford him culinary freedom and flexibility. “I have made fish soup (with fish bones!), pizzas, marinated tongue sandwiches, Italian pesto pasta, tabbouleh salads, Asian-style ramen with veggie broth, New Mexican-style posole, slow cooked brisket, anything that tastes good to me.” Soon, Gutman had a following of people excited by his playful dishes.

“Everything starts with eating! A good cook is someone who first learns how to eat well. When it is time to cook, I let my intuition guide me,” said Gutman. For Gutman, the most enjoyable aspect of cooking is when he taps into the sensory memory people carry over from their childhood. “Those are the flavors and the sensations that resonate with you and follow you into your adult life, and that is what makes me vibrate in the kitchen,” he commented. “The other day, I made a salad for my Turkish friend Ali. He takes it to his shop and a few minutes later he’s calling me saying that it was exactly the salad he would always have in Turkey. He was coming close to tears over a salad!”

Gutman stressed that, for him, good food doesn’t have to be Argentinian. It just has to be something he loves to eat.

“I have to enjoy what I eat before I make it for somebody else,” said Gutman. “I’ll sell the dishes I make, of course, but I’m trying to please myself first. Then if I like it, I feel confident to offer it to my customers. And if the customer discovers something special in that dish, then we have made a connection. That is the only reason to do this.”

Montecito Fire donates defibrillators to Girls Inc.

The Montecito Firefighters Charitable Foundation recently donated two Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machines and response kits to the community which will be housed at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. CPR and early defibrillation are effective in saving lives when used in the first few minutes following collapse from sudden cardiac arrest.

“With so many lives entrusted on our campus daily, we are dedicated to ensuring all the necessary tools and equipment Montecito firefighters stand beside a are available, if ever needed,” defibrillator station recently donated to and said Jamie Collins, Girls Inc. installed at the Carpinteria campus of Girls executive director. “We are Inc. grateful to the Montecito Firefighters Charitable Foundation for outfitting our campus with these two machines and additional equipment that can be utilized as a lifesaving resource for our community.”

The donated equipment from MFCF includes two Defibtech Lifeline AED machines, two alarmed wall-mounted boxes to house the equipment, two sets of pediatric defibrillation pads, two Curaplex Red Response kits, and two Curaplex Stop the Bleed basic kits.

United Boys & Girls Clubs unites all area clubs, Santa Barbara site reopens

For the first time since the oldest Boys and Girls Club was founded in 1938, all of the clubs from Carpinteria to Lompoc will now operate together, as part of the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County (UBGC) organization, and they will continue providing services to more than 5,000 youth in the region.

After closing all sites because of Covid-19, UBGC reopened its Downtown Santa Barbara Club at Canon Perdido on July 6. Members of any UBGC site—which includes the Carpinteria Club—are eligible to attend. A two-week training was held for staff in preparation to open their club doors for members. “We wanted to make sure that we were able to operate our clubs in a manner that made the safety of our club members and staff priority number one,” stated Michael Baker CEO of UBGC. The first week they reopened they had 17 members attending, now they have 39 kids enrolled.

“It will cost us $1.5 million to open all our clubs from Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, 2020, and fill them to capacity under the new Covid-19 standards,” Baker said, as each club site can only serve 50 to 100 kids based on the new Covid-19 standards.

“We have amazing and dedicated staff who are ready and waiting to give our members a chance for a little ‘normal’ in their lives,” said Board President Tony Vallejo.

“A fun and safe place they can go and play. Our people are amazing, and the proof of that is the smiling faces you can see all over the clubs. We currently have one club open now and hope to open the others shortly.”

Noon Rotary keeps on despite pandemic

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon continues to meet online and recently had a virtual visit from Deb Linden, the district governor for Rotary District 5240. Linden informed the club of fundraising and community service during Covid-19, with her perspective as the governor for 71 Rotary Clubs in four counties, including all three Carpinteria clubs. Linden is also the former Santa Barbara County Sheriff Commander for the Carpinteria Station.

After 71 years, Colson’s Garage on 6th Street will close permanently on Friday, July 31. First opened by Frank Colson and now owned by Frank’s son JR, the shop has been owned and operated by the Colson family since 1949.

While JR said that Covid-19 sped up the closure, it’s also something that he’d been planning for some time.

Even before he could drive, JR was working summer vacations and weekends at the garage, cleaning and doing small tasks with his father. When he started driving at 15, he began running the tow truck on nights and weekends. At 16, he was driving a two-ton tow truck and doing highway patrol after school and on weekends. “I had a lot of training with my dad,” said JR, who went on to follow in his father’s footsteps, making his life’s career in towing, tires and auto repairs.

At 60 years old, after working 45 years at Colson’s Garage, JR said he’s ready to retire. “With everything going on in the world and how fast things are changing,

I just think it’s a good time to do it,” said JR, who noted that the auto repair business has gotten more regulated over time, leading to more paperwork which he hasn’t enjoyed doing as much. “It’s just getting harder and harder. Every year you get hit with something new,” said JR. “Some other hoop to jump through. You know when you’re done, and I’m done.”

JR, who owns the property with his brother, will now rent the entire shop to Costa’s Auto Works who currently occupy half of the garage.

After he retires, JR said he hopes to spend more time with his wife Shannon and to travel. “There are places we want to go,” said JR. “My son is moving to Georgia and I’ll go visit him. It will be nice to have the time. I haven’t had a decent vacation in a long time. Now I’m going to go on a real long vacation—forever long.”

The change will be bittersweet though, noted JR, who regrets leaving his customers who have come to rely on Colson’s to care for their cars. But JR said his customers have been supportive and he looks forward to his next chapter.

It’s summer in Carpinteria and pandemic-precautions notwithstanding, there’s still some fun to be had. All around town life continues with workouts and exercise, the occasional glass of wine and outdoor church services. CVN photographer Robin Karlsson, on her trusty mountain bike, was on the scene over the weekend of July 25-26.

Jill Siple of Rincon Mountain Winery Tasting Room in “The Row” shops on the West End of Carpinteria Avenue, pours a glass of wine that her husband Ed Siple vinted at the namesake winery on Rincon Mountain.

With vineyards in both Paso Robles and on Rincon Mountain, Ed puts his 2010 viticulture degree from Cal Poly to good use. The tasting room is open by reservation only at this time.

James Eichler gets his reps in at Rincon Fitness, where they’ve reconfigured their gym equipment for outside workouts.

The 20-year-old Cal Poly student has been quarantining with his family at home and looks for outside activities whenever he can.

For three-weeks running, Reality Church has held Sunday service at 9 and 11 a.m. in the parking lot, sharing the Gospel under the cathedral of the open sky.

Whipped Honey and Goat Cheese Tart

I am really excited to start sharing my recipes with the community and our visitors. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m the executive pastry chef at The Food Liaison, and I feel lucky to have discovered our little town of Carpinteria a few years ago.

What better way to start a pastry column than in the peak of summer! I hope that these recipes will help spread more joy and less negativity in these trying times. All the recipes you will see in my column are approachable and created for both the novice and the experienced cook.

This month, I chose a Whipped Honey and Goat Cheese Tart recipe because it is the perfect complement for fresh seasonal stone fruits, which are in abundance right now. The sweetness from the honey and peaches, the tang from the goat cheese, the acidity from the orange zest, and the slight bitterness from the plums create a perfect marriage on the palate.

Filling

8 oz cream 2 tbsp powdered sugar ½ tsp vanilla extract

In a separate bowl, mix egg and vanilla extract. Add egg mixture to the creamed butter and scrape down the sides. Mix together. Add flour and salt and mix till combined.

Form dough into a flattened disk shape, six inches. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate until chilled.

Roll dough into a circle, ⅛ inch thick.

Press dough into a 10-inch fluted tart shell. Remove excess dough with a sharp knife or fingers. Poke around the bottom of the tart with a fork about a dozen times.

Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for five minutes. Rotate and continue baking for five more minutes or until the tart shell is golden brown.

Honey goat cheese filling

With a stand mixer fitted with the whip attachment, whip heavy cream, vanilla extract and powdered sugar until stiff peaks form. Set aside.

With a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together goat cheese, cream cheese, honey, salt and orange zest until smooth. Fold whipped cream into the honey goat cheese mixture.

One bite of this whipped honey and goat cheese tart and your spoon will thank you!

Assembly

Spoon whipped goat cheese filling into the prepared tart shell. Spread the cream filling out evenly with an offset spatula.

Thinly slice peaches and plums. Decorate the tart by alternating peach and plum and fanning them around the outside and continuing to the middle. Enjoy!

Business advice that hits The Spot

TRADE SECRETS M E G A N WA L D R E P Did you know the building of the iconic little burger shack, The Spot, was built in 1914? It’s one of the oldest buildings in Carpinteria, second only to The Palms.

Though the building has stood for over 100 years, Jesse Bustillo, a self-proclaimed jeans and T-shirt kind of guy, is just its third owner.

Originally from Wisconsin, Bustillo is the child of a restaurateur. His childhood upbringing with a man in the food industry acts as a touchstone for running a burger stand. Well, that, and his experience from past jobs as a dishwasher, a McDonald’s employee, truck driver, wholesale food supervisor, and a stint in restaurant sales. Through one of his sales jobs he met the previous owner of The Spot.

“The Spot was a client of mine, and the owner just grew a liking to me,” Bustillo said. “He told me that one day I would own his restaurant.” Though flattered, Bustillo shook it off, remembering some of the stress his father experienced when running a restaurant. But, years later, The Spot owner retired and Bustillo gave in.

He took over in 1999 with the promise to keep the beloved burger shack “as is.”

Bustillo has acquired other classic restaurants in the same way; by buying businesses from retiring owners who trust him to keep the old-school vibes intact. Bustillo’s portfolio now includes vintage eateries such as A-Burger and Buddy Burgers in Oxnard and Burger Barn in Camarillo. With a passion for nostalgia, Bustillo has kept his word. “I want to keep the old places alive.”

As for the best business advice he’s received, it’s hard to pinpoint: “I don’t know if anyone gave me advice. It’s been more about me taking over and doing my thing,” Bustillo said. “But I saw how my dad was nice to everybody, so I’m always nice to my employees and I invest in them. I like to keep up with their lives and ask about their day.” And it’s paid off. Three cooks have worked with him for over 15 years, and other employees have stayed around long after Bustillo took over businesses.

The Spot runs a brisk burger business throughout the year, and owner Jesse Bustillo says to would-be restauranteurs: “educate yourself on food service.”

Fortunately, Covid-19 has not changed much when it comes to the walk-up burger stand. Outside seating is still available, though limited due to spacing guidelines, and social spacing is marked when you’re standing in line. Of course, the signature order-up-and-carry-out is still available for milkshakes, burgers or breakfast burritos on the beach. The Spot opens at 7:30 a.m. every day—don’t forget to bring your mask!

Staying true to The Spot’s unique personality while staying current in what matters is the key to success for Bustillo. “I try to keep up with the times by keeping it clean and not letting it get run down,” he said, reemphasizing that cleanliness is vital. Bustillo also recommended investing in professionals to fix what needs repair. “Other family restaurants try to fix things themselves, and you notice it.”

The advice he’d give to his younger self just starting out in the restaurant business is the same advice he gives to his employees today. “I always tell my managers to watch what I do and learn how I operate the business because one day, they may take over one of my restaurants.” His trade secret is a juicy one, spoken by a man who knows both

the retail and wholesale sides of the restaurant business: “It’s important to educate yourself on food service, and double-check prices when purchasing wholesale goods,” Bustillo said. “Don’t just order food, then put the prices on the menu. You have to follow up and make

sure you’re getting a fair price.”

Seventh grader Brady Cooper knows an opportunity when he sees it, and found a way to serve the community and make some pocket money in the process by crafting and selling much-needed (and required) masks on the corner of Linden Avenue and Sandyland Road most summer days.

“…if you are among the very young at heart,” Frank Sinatra sang, and at 99-years-young, Alma Heck (with her daughter Karen Cornelius) knows just what he meant. She has lived in Carpinteria and served First Baptist Church for 51 years.

A recent Facebook post brought out more than 100 friends and supporters of Annette Fisher, and they walked together down Linden Avenue in celebration of her life as she continues her battle with cancer.

The procession continued to the city beach where people threw flowers into the sea in Fisher’s honor.

Local artist exhibits work at Zookers

An exhibition of paintings by Carpinteria artist Allison Gobbell is hanging at Zookers through Aug. 23, with a portion of all proceeds going to the Carpinteria Art Center. Gobbell has lived in Carpinteria for eight years, and grew up in Santa Barbara. She is married to J.J. Gobbell, and they have a house full of seven children.

Gobbell’s paintings feature birds, people and architecture, with scripture underneath and references to historic artists in some. “In the local art scene, I’m known as a bird painter,” Gobbell shared, “but my friends just call me that lady with seven children!” The artist also shared that she was “really happy to have an actual show put in place, as so many artists are having their shows canceled due to concerns with Covid-19. I think it lasted about 10 days where people could eat inside, but even though the food has to be served outdoors now, you can still go inside and look at the art. I’m really thankful we can still go out to eat and support local businesses right now, while staying safe.”

Bellas Artes is a non-profit program co-sponsored by the Carpinteria Arts Center and Peoples Self Help Housing, with funding by Marty Selfridge and the Towbes Foundation.

Over the past 13 years, Bellas Artes has held three, week-long summer intensive workshops in Carpinteria but during Covid-19 participants and staff cannot sit elbow-to-elbow sharing paints, brushes, smiles, knowledge and conversation.

Still, the arts program has found a way to continue arts instruction for its members.

In a new program called “Home is where the Art Is,” Bellas Artes artists, ranging in age from two to 82, have been given 140 sets of artist-quality gouache/opaque watercolors, brushes and mixed-media paper journals. Each artist also received an educational booklet with directions on multiple ways to use the paints and inspirational images, featuring pre-colonial art collections from Frida Kahlo’s home garden, Diego Rivera’s Mexico City Museum and Tamayo’s Museum in Oaxaca, as well as contemporary Oaxacan folk art made in the homes of the Aguilar Family, Teodora Blanco and others.
