Carpinteria City Council heeded the community’s demands for change on Monday, June 8, when they unanimously voted to support a resolution condemning the unjustified use of force and brutality against black people and people of color by law enforcement.

Standing in solidarity with non-violent protestors of racial injustice in Carpinteria and around the country, the councilmembers issued a resolution stating that they were “horrified” by the recent instances of police brutality and unjustified killings of black people and people of color in the United States.

In denouncing such killings, councilmembers called attention to a history of systemic racism, trauma and injustice embedded in the history of Santa Barbara County—“colored by the legacies of slavery… the county’s first black resident, Jerry Forney, was a slave.”

Additionally, councilmembers noted that Carpinteria “is not immune from a history of injustice and racism,” referencing the city’s history of racially segregated schools.

Marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, and those with disabilities, also deserve better treatment, states the resolution,

“…colored by the legacies of slavery… the county’s first black resident, Jerry Forney, was a slave.”

which notes that these communities are also more likely to be subjected to unjust treatment by law enforcement.

Condemning White Nationalism, White Supremacy, police brutality and unjustified use of force, the councilmembers committed the city of Carpinteria to “continue to work collaboratively with our local law enforcement to build community trust and legitimacy, implement community-oriented policing, and maintain a safe community as exemplified in specific provisions in the city’s law enforcement contract.”

In terms of resources, councilmembers committed to collaborating with minority leadership and social justice groups and to developing resources that support and amplify minority-owned businesses, community groups and non-profit organizations within the city and broader community.

Polo Fields helistop project returns in appeal

On July 7, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will consider Patrick Nesbitt’s appeal of the County Planning Commission’s decision to deny him a permit for two private helicopter landing pads near the Santa Barbara Polo Fields in Carpinteria Valley.

The project is known as the Carpinteria Valley Farms Helistop.

On Nov. 7, 2019, the Planning Commission denied Nesbitt’s application to put a helistop with two landing pads on his 20-acre property located at Via Real and Lambert Road, estimated to be worth $65 million. By his own admission, Nesbitt has been landing helicopters in the Carpinteria Valley for over 25 years. But two years ago, after a neighbor’s complaints were verified, he was “red tagged,” and now needs a permit to continue without getting fined.

The conditional use and coastal development permits would allow Nes-

bitt to use the helistop two times per week (two landings and two takeoffs) between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Nesbitt would arrive at his property by way of the ocean.

However, the application drew an onslaught of public dissent before its initial public hearing. In the days leading up to the hearing last fall, planners received over a hundred letters fiercely opposing Nesbitt’s helistop, and moreover, imploring the county not create a precedent that would pave the way for more affluent residents to have private helicopter landing pads.

Council moves to strengthen affordable housing protections

Carpinteria City Council unanimously approved an amendment to existing code related to Condominium/Cooperative Conversions, with modifications. Supported by the Planning Commission, the proposed code reinforces the city’s efforts to ensure an adequate supply of rental housing for all income levels and workforce households. The proposed code aims to provide reasonable regulations and standards to govern apartment conversions and to help mitigate the impact of eviction for residents of rental units when their units are converted.

Councilmember Al Clark raised serious concerns with language in the ordinance that allowed exceptions for developers, reducing the city’s ability to protect affordable housing. “Contrary to a provision of affordable housing, these exceptions really gut the spirit and teeth of the ordinance,” said Clark.

The council agreed and the exceptions were stricken from the proposed language of the ordinance allowing for a unanimous approval by councilmembers. Next up, the Planning Commission will review the changes and return a revised draft of the ordinance to the Council for final approval.

City faces budget cuts

City Manager David Durflinger stated that resources spent in the pandemic-related response combined with revenue lost from a steep decline in revenue from sales and transient occupancy taxes, have significantly impacted the city’s budget. As the city approaches the next fiscal year, Durflinger stated that saving money will be required and will include a hiring freeze, staff furloughs, postponing non-time-sensitive projects and dipping into the city’s “rainy day” funds.

Funding for the current year is expected to decline by approximately $1 million.

Though the severity and length of the pandemic’s economic impact remains unknown, the city is projecting a reduction of nearly $1 million for the coming year as well. Revenues to the General Fund, which supports most city operations and services, are expected to decrease from $10.1 million to $9.3 million.

The existence of healthy fund balances and reserves will help the city withstand the impact of the pandemic, according to Durflinger. City Council members expressed support of the measures Durflinger proposed. A draft of the budget will be reviewed at the June 22 City Council meeting, where public comments will also be heard.

City lifts remaining parking restrictions

The city of Carpinteria has lifted the last of the parking restrictions that were implemented as a means of slowing the spread of Covid-19 by reducing congestion at local beaches, parks and downtown. This includes the removal of the two-hour limits in the Beach and Concha Loma neighborhoods, as well as a small number of permit parking only areas. Beach lots reopened last week, along with other emergency parking restrictions.

In areas of the City unaffected by the emergency parking restrictions, the enforcement of timed and street sweeping parking enforcement has been suspended since early in the pandemic. Enforcement in those areas will resume on Monday, June 15.

Businesses reopen

Over 100 businesses have self-certified to reopen within city limits, according to City Manager David Durflinger. The city readies now for Stage III of the four-staged reopening plan laid out by California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Last week, the governor announced that counties can plan to move into Stage III as early as this week—if the county Public Office approves—greatly expanding the businesses that can reopen. An announcement from Santa Barbara County is expected on Wednesday, June 10.

Businesses that will receive a greenlight (with modifications) in Phase III are: family entertainment centers, restaurants, wineries, bars, zoos, museums, fitness centers, campgrounds, outdoor recreation, casinos, music, film and TV production and games without live audiences.

Red Flag Warning in effect

National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low relative humidity for the Santa Barbara South Coast and mountains. The Red Flag Warning will remain in effect through Monday morning, June 15. Wind speeds may reach 60 mph in some areas. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions comprised of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures are either occurring now, or will shortly. Use caution while driving, secure outdoor items that may blow away, and avoid activities that could start a fire.

ABOP is back

The city’s regular ABOP Collection events are scheduled to resume this Saturday, with the first collection event since the Covid-19 pandemic’s stay-at-home orders taking place on Saturday, June 13. Obituary

CVN

Dan was born to Gordon and Dorothy Ward in Bakersfield. He had a rich and varied life as a dragster racer, sea urchin and abalone diver, Navy fighter pilot in Vietnam, and United Airlines pilot. He was hard working and constantly building—residing in Hawaii, Alaska and Santa Barbara at the same time. Dan was an avid outdoorsman; he loved fishing, hunting, swimming, diving, skiing and gardening. He traveled extensively to many countries around the world with the love of his life, Carol. “Having each other was having it all.”

He is survived by his wife Carol Seekins; sister Dena Groters; nieces Jan, Jill and Donette Hicks. He was predeceased by his daughter Ruth Anne Marie.

He is missed by many. A Celebration of Dan’s life will be held at a later date, Covid-19 permitting.

Celebrating pride

June is known and celebrated in many parts of the world as LGBTQ+ Pride Month. However, as far as this local can recall, there has never been a display of pride/rainbow flags in any public spaces, or small stickers in the windows of businesses in Carp. That is, until I saw the pride flag flying outside Procore this evening. While flags themselves are just pieces of fabric sewn together, the meaning within those rainbow colors swaying in our coastal breeze can be the difference of feeling seen and accepted, or an outcast in your own town.

I’ll be honest, Carp didn’t feel like a place I could be my true, full self as a high school student in the early 2000s.

And now, without any visible displays, have we changed that for our youth and fellow LGBTQ+ community? Sure, I could return to other cities I’ve lived in that visibly celebrated our presence, but as a sixth generation Carpinterian, this is home. I’d love to see us celebrate and show some pride.

Tree mitigation needed

Damn, what a mess we made of our wonderful country. We did it and we have to own it.

Looting is not on the same level as killing anyone; electing a known grifter for president is a mistake, but continuing to let him debase our nation is intolerable; and allowing that being black itself is a crime is unconscionable.

Frankly, who wouldn’t want to burn it all down? Fortunately, we will get through this and make improvements, but only if white folks step up. We must live up to our equality, justice—now hollow slogans—and act better. I know others can agree that we have marched, protested, worked to improve our laws and behavior from within the government, and now we see that shattering the windows in Macy’s makes for better traction. Decades of efforts versus one minute of rioting—but it may be the only way to get the attention of the ruling class. I don’t know about you, but my marching boots are worn out.

A call to action:

It is time for systemic change

BY PAMELA WERNER, JENNIFER COTA AND CELESTE ELLIOTT In response to the senseless murder of George Floyd, Meagan Hockaday, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and so many other brothers and sisters of color, we are calling on city and community leaders to commit to systemic change in Carpinteria.

The city of Carpinteria and the Carpinteria police unit of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office must address existing Use of Force policies or lack thereof. While Carpinteria is a small, peaceful community, we owe it to our populace to take a stand and show solidarity with Americans across the nation and to espouse the values that we want to represent. Moreover, by making the commitment to advocate for and lead change, we are demonstrating that Carpinteria will not stand for racial intolerance, violence or inequity.

In the current scorecard for the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office, the overall grade is an F. This is unacceptable. While data for the city of Carpinteria is not available separately, the county statistics clearly show that we have significant room to improve, specifically around the attempt to de-escalate by use of non-lethal force prior to shooting. Most alarming is the population of black and Latinx arrested/killed or injured disproportionate to the population.

Anecdotally, here in Carpinteria, where Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office contracts with the city, we see a smaller rotation of sheriff personnel which can promote small-town warmth and comfort, or more disconcertingly, harbor bias and profiling. The lean assignment of deputies at any given time can mean longer wait time for backup, a substantial stressor to any escalated incident. Therefore, it is imperative we emphasize de-escalation practices. The nation, our state, county and city have reached a tipping point where racial bias will no longer pass as an undercurrent that is politely dismissed by those not wanting to “ruffle feathers.”

The public demands a response. We urge the City Council to commit to police reforms in a public statement. (On June 8, the Carpinteria City Council passed resolution No. 5981 condemning

the unjustified use of force and brutality against black people and people of color by law enforcement.) This should not be a static motion or indication of success, but rather a step in an overall plan to markedly improve upon sensitivity and bias training and policy going forward.

This plea is not meant to be a complaint against current civil servants who put in tough work each day, but rather an introspective action at a time when we should all be examining opportunities to repair what is so painfully broken.

Until 1991, Carpinteria had its own police department. The adopted law enforcement contract budget for the 2020 fiscal year is more than 4.2M or 19.4 percent of the city’s overall spending. The city of Carpinteria leadership must evaluate whether budget dollars spent on the outside police contract with the County Sheriff’s Office could be reduced and redistributed, with significant spending on diverse citizen oversight of police policy, youth edu-

Carpinteria High School Principal Gerardo Cornejo, along with the school’s Leadership Team and Parent Group have planned an in-person graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 11, at 6 p.m. for students and their immediate families. The modified ceremony will resemble a drive-in theater, with each graduate and their family assigned a parking spot. Registration is now open for two, one-week day camps for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students beginning Monday, July 20. Students will enroll in a primary class, elective class and outdoor activities, led predominantly

by Cate faculty.

Sessions will run Monday through Friday and lunch is included in the $800 fee. Classes include: Colorful Explorations – The Chemistry of Art, Diplomacy, Screenwriting for Young Adults, Leadership and Design Thinking.

Complying with local guidelines the school will adhere to protocols for social distancing, and wherever physical distancing is not possible, Cate will provide kid-friendly face coverings as well as temperature checks and symptom screenings each day. Additionally, students will be assigned to class blocks that will not intermingle as a further precaution.

“Neighbors to Neighbor” is a self explanatory name.

That’s how this all went down. When we started handing out free masks, volunteers from all over Carpinteria came together to help. Very often a new volunteer would show up at my door quietly saying “I’m so relieved to be able to do something to fight against the virus.” Donations were coming in. Carpinterians everywhere emptied their cupboards donating fabrics, tablecloths, sheets, draperies.

And cookies. And dinners. Volunteers came to walk our dogs, to run to the store for us.

This has been a lifetime experience for me, getting to watch Carpinteria do what it does best. We come together to help each other, to support each other, to protect our beloved town.

With heart felt appreciation, I salute our extraordinary volunteers who have worked so hard, so long.

Covid-19 and the real estate market

THE QUARTERLY REPORT J O N - R YA N S C H L O B O H M The last few months have been unusual times, to say the least. The world has been in flux, and me and my team, like you, were trying to understand what was really going on. For a while, to attempt to narrow in on real estate would have been anyone’s guess and just didn’t feel right. But time has provided perspective—and data—allowing us to paint a picture of the state of Santa Barbara County’s real estate market today.

What has happened

As you might have guessed, the real estate market paused rather dramatically with the onset of Covid-19 and the economic shut-down that followed.

During the first two and a half months of 2020, the market was moving and our team was busy. When the shelter in place order took effect in mid-March, we had nine homes under contract. One week later, four escrows had canceled. But we still had five sales under contract, some hitting more bumps than others but all moving forward, for which we were very grateful.

By the third week of March, we were no longer allowed to physically show homes and there were a lot of unknowns for all of us.

Mid-March through April

Starting in mid-March and throughout all of April, a few more of our buyers and sellers entered escrow and general activity was dramatically slower. During those six weeks, the Santa Barbara County market produced less than half the normal number of new listings each week, and new pending sales dropped by two-thirds.

To make conducting business even more challenging, many lenders froze their home loan programs, leaving buyers with less lending options. For several weeks, it seemed like the only players in

that received several offers. It is difficult to quantify, but it appears that we have a larger than normal influx of buyers from out of the area.

April’s activity

With April escrows extremely low, when all data is released, we expect May sales to be at least 50 percent down compared to May 2019. Year to date, May will be the most impacted month of 2020, taking the brunt of the Covid stay at home order.

April sales reflect properties that went under contract largely in March.

We expected April sales to drop—how could they not with all that happened.

April experienced a 43 percent drop in total sales compared to the previous year. Given all that occurred and a world economy that almost came to a complete halt, we felt pretty good about the data.

May brought change

Then came May. We saw a noticeable change in the month of May. People started venturing out more. Slowly, each week there has been a return toward normal, and real estate activity has increased.

The other notable change was the big slowdown in escrows. By April 30, 2020, there were only 66 homes in escrow which was a dramatic change from the

Surprising signs

Looking towards June, we now have a couple of encouraging signs. Total pending sales as of May 30 are 138—still down from our historic numbers (May 31, 2019, totaled 173)—but more than doubling April’s total. Looking at the May data more closely, it seems buyers have emerged again. Of the 138 homes under contract, 86, or 62 percent, opened escrow after May 4.

Another phenomenon we did not anticipate was multiple offers. We are aware of a handful of recent properties

Consistent with our greater area, Carpinteria started the year strong and slowed noticeably in March and April.

In an average month, 12 homes typically sell in Carpinteria, but this April, we only saw four properties change hands.

Though we do not have complete records yet for May, it appears that May will be even weaker.

Thankfully we have some encouraging news. As of June 4, 18 properties were under contract and most of that activity was very recent. Eighty-four percent of the homes and condos in escrow went under contract after May 15. It appears that buyers are back, an optimistic sign for our local real estate market.

Looking forward

There is no doubt that the economic shutdown will impact the national economy. I, like everyone else, am curious about how that will impact our local real estate market. But we also now have record low interest rates and signs of current activity that is above expectations.

It will be interesting to see how the remainder of the year plays out!

“Picnic in the Park” coming to Carpinteria

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County will host the children’s summer lunch program, Picnic in the Park, offering free healthy lunches for kids 18 and under Monday through Friday from June 8 to Aug. 7 (June 10 to Aug. 14 in Carpinteria) at 10 locations countywide.

In Carpinteria Picnic in the Park meals will be at Carpinteria Middle School, 12:30-1:30 p.m., and Canalino School, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Due to Covid-19 safety recommendations, lunches will be offered “grab & go” style, for pickup and eating offsite.

Lunches are served on a first-come first-served basis as part of the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program, and there are no income requirements to participate. All children under the age of 18 are encouraged to attend.

Although group activities at the locations are prohibited due to Covid-19 restrictions, activity books and online nutrition education will be available to children who participate in Picnic in the Park.

The Foodbank is currently seeking volunteers to help manage lunch sites between between June 16 and Aug. 14 in Carpinteria. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older, and commit to either an entire week or one day weekly for two hours around noontime. Community members who wish to provide meals to children facing hunger during the summer may donate and sign up online to volunteer at FoodbankSBC.org.

When Dorene Custer ’s two sons Philip and Joseph started preschool at Kinderkirk in 1990, Custer also began a new chapter in her life. Custer began subbing at the Carpinteria Community Church school and quickly found that she liked being a part of a Christian preschool. When the boys went off to elementary school, Custer took a part-time job at Kinderkirk and after a month, she was moved into the Blue room when one of the teachers went on maternity leave.

Children at Kinderkirk are assigned rooms by color based on their ages and social and emotional readiness. Custer joined the Blue room with the two-yearolds and teacher Judy.

Over three decades Custer was an integral part of many children’s lives. “I will really miss getting to know my new little two-year-olds and their families,” said Custer, “Getting to see them gain confidence and be comfortable leaving Mom and Dad. I will miss the unconditional love and hugs from them.”

For Custer, there were countless special moments that she will miss and cherish: make a new color of play dough each month; watching children sing and dance when Putnee would come to sing with his puppet Lucky Ducky; having lunch with children and their parents in the Santa Barbara Zoo’s grassy area, enjoying all the animals; watching children act out the Christmas story for the Christmas pageant; being part of many children’s first camping experience at the yearly Kinderkirk campout; and being her now 20-year-old grandson

Custer had planned to ease out of her role by shifting her fulltime load to three days a week and a planned retirement next June, but she decided to retire now “because with all the stress of Covid I felt like it was the right time to retire.”

In retirement, Custer will still have plenty of time with kiddos. “We have a grandson who is turning one-year-old this month and a granddaughter who is five months old,” she said, “I want to be able to go see them and be a part of their lives while they are so young. Time goes so fast, it’s crazy, you blink, and a year has gone by.”

In addition to spending time with her grandchildren, Custer plans to go camping with herThursday, husbandJune and11, to volunteer.

CAC offers free summer arts camp

Registration for the annual Teen Mural Project is now open at the Carpinteria Arts Center with a unique approach this year that allows teens to do the painting in their own home. Instead of going to the Arts Center and painting a huge mural in one day, participants will be given a piece of the mural to paint at home. Artist John Wullbrandt will then assemble the panels into one giant mural entitled “Together/Apart.”

Teens can sign up for a free week-long art class held June 22 to 26, which includes all mural supplies—or, they can sign up just for free mural supplies, which

will include a two- by two-foot board, paints and brushes. The Arts Center will also be offering seven weeks of free summer camp via a virtual Zoom meeting with art instructor Sara Leo and drama instructor Asa Olsson!

A visual arts supply package is $20 and will be available to pick up in the Arts Center courtyard the week prior to camp. The material fee for the performing arts camp is $5. No family should be discouraged from applying to classes and workshops because of lack of funds. There are scholarships available for all art supply packages.

FED UP Carpinterians gather to protest a deadly status quo

They came together from all walks of life in Carpinteria at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, gathering first on the four corners of the intersection at Carpinteria and Linden avenues—the very heart of the city—before spilling into the streets with raised placards and voices, demanding justice for the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the untold thousands of other people of color killed by police and disproportionally incarcerated across the nation since forever.

They came with a sense of urgency that now is the time to change deep-seated, systematic “norms” that result in two separate experiences of America, generally: one in which wealth and privilege accrues over generations, and another where the odds of building a middle-class life too often prove impossible to beat.

They came to demonstrate their support for people they may not know, with signs reading “White silence is violence,” and “All lives can’t matter until black lives matter.”

They came to make uncomfortable demands.

They came to change the world.

Carpinteria High School juniors Laura Flores, Jaqueline Urrutia, Isa Alarcon and Joanna Romero organized the protest to show solidarity with black students in CUSD schools and beyond. However, as Latina students, they had also experienced “racial injustice in the school system,” as Laura Flores explained. Despite representing more than 70 percent of the student body, some Latinx students feel unseen in school curriculum. “We get skipped over a lot,” Flores said.

“I hope the school will hold students accountable,” Jaqueline Urrutia stated, “for using racial slurs and cultural appropriation.”

At the protest Saturday, what started as a fairly quiet assembly on the four corners of Carpinteria’s main intersection became an impassioned march through downtown demanding citizens

to no longer merely disapprove of racist policies and institutions, but actively seek ways to reorganize American life.

Peaceful but vigorous protests across the nation—running to the tens of thousands in Washington D.C. and other major cities—illustrated that people everywhere, even in a place like Carpinteria where concerns of racial injustice can seem worlds away, want to see

positive change.

For the Carpinteria students who organized the protest locally, change will start at their school. They addressed the school board at its Tuesday, June 9, meeting, advocating for a K-12 curriculum that will include a wider representation of all people. “I think it’s important at a young age,” Flores said, “to broaden your horizons.”

Dead and dying bees raise questions

Alexandra Baer-Peralta was in her backyard on Ogan Road near Casitas Pass Road with her two small children on Wednesday, May 20, when she noticed approximately 50 or 60 dead and dying bees. She said it seemed the bees may have been poisoned because their tongues were curling out and down and they “were struggling to get their tongues in—they couldn’t do it,” she said. “It’s the worst thing to see a bee trying to help herself and you can’t do anything.”

Baer-Peralta wasn’t sure where the poisoning (if that was indeed the cause of the bees’ ailments) may have occurred.

Across North America, bee populations are threatened and numerous studies prove the existence of “Colony Collapse Disorder,” a syndrome that is characterized by the sudden loss of adult bees from the hive. The US Department of Agriculture has indicated in a report to Congress that a combination of factors may be causing colony collapse disorder,

including pesticides, pathogens and parasites, all of which have been found at high levels in affected beehives.

Colony Collapse Disorder has grave implications for the financial and physical well-being of people everywhere.

Honeybee pollination has an estimated value of more than $14 billion annually to the United States agriculture.

Honeybees are required for pollinating many crops, which range from nuts to vegetables and fruits, that are necessary for human and animal diet.

ALENA STEEN I hope that you and yours are staying well in the midst of our ever-changing reality. Here at the Carpinteria Garden Park, spring has continued apace in all its wild flourishing, providing welcome rest in the other-than-human world.

This is the garden’s third growing season and years of hard work have completely transformed scraped and graded soil as hard and nutritious as a brick.

Three years of layering garden-made compost and wood chips into the soil have created a lush landscape with limited water needs and abundant food and shelter for our neighbors the birds, monarch butterflies, honeybees and night-flying bats.

All this is possible in your home landscape as well. Even the most degraded soil or weedy lawn can become a prolific oasis of year-round fruits and vegetables, culinary herbs and flowers.

In my column last month, I wrote about the first steps to transform bare or grassy ground into healthy garden soil using compost and a thick layer of organic mulch such as wood chips or straw.

watering. Drip irrigation is the best practice, since it conservatives the most water. Drip systems use flexible hoses resting on the soil surface (underneath mulch) to deliver a steady stream of droplets directly to plant roots. Use a breaker to reduce the flow of the garden hose when hand watering, resting directly on the soil at the base of the plant so that no splashing occurs. Summer veggies do best if you allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Use your hands to dig into the soil surface—once the top two inches of soil are dry it is time to water.

Other important preventative measures include keeping plants well harvested, pruned and trellised. Allowing summer veggies such as cucumbers, melons and tomatoes to climb lifts them off the soil surface and allows air to circulate, reducing the spread of disease.

Frequent harvests encourage increased production and remove another vector of disease in the form of rotting fruits.

If these best practices still aren’t enough to slow the spread of fungal disease, use a generous application of compost tea to give plants extra support.

Brew one part homemade compost to five parts water for two days, stirring vigorously several times a day. Use this rich and fragrant tea to water directly at the base of plants, or put in a spray bottle for f oliar ap plication ear ly i n t he d ay.

And finally, for tomatoes in particular, the planting time and varieties chosen are a key ingredient of success. Generally, it’s best to wait until late May to plant summer veggies on the coast, so that fruits develop as the summer becomes warmer and drier. There are many

Rincon Fitness readies to reopen

Rincon Fitness USA co-owner Kevin Twohy and gyms statewide have been anxiously awaiting word from Gavin Newsom on when they can reopen their doors to the public. On Friday, June 5, the governor’s office gave the okay for gyms to open on June 12, with the final determination on what is allowable determined by local governments. Rincon Fitness did not skip a beat and will reopen this Saturday, June 13—with a Covid-19 influenced set of health and safety guidelines in place.

This is not the first time that Rincon Fitness has been shuttered. “We opened December 1, 2017, five days before the Thomas Fire. Right away, we were shut down because of the fire for six weeks or so,” said Twohy who runs the Carpinteria Branch of Rincon Fitness USA along with his wife Louisa. The fitness center was going strong the last two years, after a successful reopening in March of 2018, but with the arrival of Covid-19, Rincon Fitness was forced to close again, this time for nearly three months.

For the most part, the closure has meant that employees at Rincon Fitness have been out of work. “I actually have a few people that are on payroll, but they’re doing minimal work,” said Twohy, who was the recipient of aid from the federal Payroll Protection Program, which allowed him to cover some of his costs during the closure.

Rincon Fitness instructors are independent contractors, allowing many gym members to continue to receive virtual instruction online as well as group instruction on the beach.

When the gym reopens, clients will find all of the equipment is now separated by at least six feet of distance and everyone who enters the fitness center will first disinfect

their shoes along with other sanitation protocols.

“To come workout, members must walk into a bin that has disinfectant,” said Twohy who learned that the virus can be spread through footwear.

Members will also be required to make an appointment to utilize the facility in 55-minute increments. After each 55-minute session, the gym will close for 30 minutes to clean all equipment for the next group. Members will also be required to wear masks upon entering the building, with the option to remove them if exercising in an isolated area. In order to control the number of people inside of the building at once, members will also be asked to make an appointment to schedule exercise time.

At a time when spectator sports are a rare occurrence because of the pandemic, the gym is scheduling an event to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) scheduled for Saturday, June 13, to help kick off their reopening.

A pair of local firefighters, Kenan Marting and Johan Nilson, were scheduled to represent the county in the 29th annual LLS Firefighter Stairclimb in Seattle, but the event was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Instead of climbing the tallest skyscraper west of the Mississippi in full 60-pound turnout gear, they’ll be knocking out the 69 flights of stairs on a pair of the gym’s Stairmaster machines over the weekend in front of a live audience at Rincon Fitness.

“To me that’s really cool, people can accept it, get behind it,” said Twohy.

“I’m excited about this, it’s something that’s different, it’s positive.”

Firefighter fundraiser for LLS goes virtual

on Saturday, June 13, Rincon Fitness will host a live competition between firefighters, as the gym once again opens its doors to the public. They’ll be competing in a “virtual stair climb” which takes the place of the 29th annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Firefighter Stairclimb which is normally held on a Seattle skyscraper, but was canceled due to the Covid-19 outbreak. “There’s going to be firefighters across the country as well as the public are all going to be climbing on Six-Thirteen (June 13),” said Carpinteria-Summerland firefighter Kenan Marting of the event that is slated to start at 1 p.m.

Marting will join colleague Johan Nilson, representing Santa Barbara County. The two will hop aboard a pair of stairclimber machines in full gear and air tanks, set to simulate the ascent of the northwest building’s 61 stories. They’ll be accompanied by all the other local firefighters in the region who will also get a chance to utilize the apparatus. So far, they’ve raised $800, but are still accepting donations. Spark45 to reopen June 15

Spark45 Fitness and Physical Therapy will reopen on Monday, June 15, according to owner Danielle Bordenave. Following state and county guidelines, Bordenave has made changes throughout the studio to ensure the health and safety of her clients, including rearranging machines to be six feet apart, requiring members to sign up 60 minutes prior to class, and checking temperatures of everyone upon arrival.

Face coverings will also be required when waiting to enter and while using certain machines. Members must bring their own towels and water bottles. After each class, Spark45 teachers will give out wipes and spray down the machines with hospital grade anti-bacterial, anti-virus and anti-fungicide solutions. Teachers between classes will also use an ultra-violet light on frequently touched and difficult to clean areas, such as the springs and handles of the apparatus. Spark45 is committed to whatever needs to be done in order to comply, keep members safe, keep the teachers safe, and to stay open, stated Bordenave.

Covid doc addresses Rotary

M AT T D U N C A N “The Vast of Night” is a great escape.

Think “The Twilight Zone.” Think “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

Think “The War of the Worlds.” “The Vast of Night,” which was on limited release last year and is just now streaming on Amazon Prime, is a low-budget sci-fi mystery that takes place in New Mexico in the 1950s.

The movie begins with a Twilight-Zone-esque opening—“The Paradox Theatre Hour”—on a crackling old TV. Which sets the stage for a kind of retro otherworldliness—a dead serious but seriously heartwarming sense of mystery and wonder and a little fear and scandal and apprehension. Other scenes throughout the movie also appear on this crackly ‘50s TV set with poor reception, reminding us how to feel, what mood to be in, but also that this story is strange, distant, manipulated, mediated, fabricated, not totally real.

The story follows high schoolers Fay Crocker (Sierra McCormick) and Everett Sloan (Jake Horowitz). Crocker is a switchboard operator. Sloan hosts a local radio show. They, like everyone else in this movie, like to tell tales to each other—some long, some short, always speculative, and, if possible, recorded.

On the night of “the disturbance” almost the whole town is at a local basketball game. Even the game, which must have been the height of commonplace for the townsfolk, has an eerie aura to it. It plays out in this big, old hanger, the overhead lights give off an orange florescent glow, and the dust particles wafting through the air figure as a kind of ether that holds the big multi-personal hoard together like the teeming vesicles of an alien species.

On the outside, at their respective headsets, Crocker and Sloan hear some strange noise over the radio. It’s some kind of interference. At her switchboard, Crocker gets some unusual calls—maybe disturbing, maybe not. Then Sloan gets a curious call into his radio show.

The caller is older, and tells of a time when he was with the U.S. military, and they brought him out into the middle of nowhere to something super-secret that they weren’t allowed to say anything about. He doesn’t have all the details, though he notes that he and his fellow military-grade peons felt strange, noxious side effects from their encounter those many years ago.

Sloan’s caller is talking now, he says,

first because he is old and has nothing to lose, and, second, because the sound Sloan played for him over the radio— that strange noise he and Crocker heard earlier—is exactly the sound he heard while on his mysterious mission decades ago.

All of this is eerie, alien. Yet the plot is nothing new. “There’s something in the sky” is the line. And all of the stylistic elements of this old-school sci-fi drama are utterly genre-affirming. Even the upbeat ‘50s style is unrepentantly old fashioned.

And yet “The Vast of Night” is fresh, exciting, captivating. You already know what it’s about, yet you can’t look away.

The feel of this movie—with the warm colors, town-traversing tracking shots, period lingo, eerie score and subtle distancing techniques—is so rich, atmospheric, quirky and yet somehow also quaint and reassuring.

We’re so used to being bludgeoned with hyper realism. We’re primed to scoff at anything—sci-fi or not—that doesn’t look exactly like what we’d expect it to if it plopped down into one of our backyards right now. But what “The Vast of Night” insists, and what it reminds us was so wonderfully effective about old TV shows and movies like “The Twilight Zone” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” is that not everything turns out exactly like we’d expect. Some events, whether supernatural or extraterrestrial or just unfamiliar, are, or would be, alien, confusing, weird, otherworldly and maybe also a little bit magical.

“The Vast of Night” is a transportation device—part time machine, part alien spacecraft. And I’ll take this ride anytime.

“The Vast of Night” is rated PG-13 for brief, strong language.

CHS Baseball 1920

Peering into the faces of the Carpinteria High School nine, one can only imagine how brightly they may have forseen their futures. In the case of the 1920 Carp team, it was a mixed bag, as it is for every collection of players within any team sport. This team was special, however, right off the bat (pun intended). It was most likely the first baseball team in CHS history, the school graduating only its fourth class of students.

In 1917, its first graduating group was a class of three! Fielding a team of nine players must have been something of a minor miracle. Let’s take a brief look at the eight players in the picture who graduated from CHS. Don “Dude” Bailard, James “Jim” Deaderick and Sheldon “Shel” Martin were the senior class members on the team.

By 1920, Bailard, from the Carpinteria pioneer family, was already the third Bailard to graduate from CHS. He went to UC Berkeley, married and continued the Bailard farming tradition. Deaderick was off to UC Berkeley and Martin to the Agricultural College of Colorado. Martin became Carpinteria’s radio technician during the era of radio. He was also a fixture on the local high school sports scene. He was the P.A. announcer for the Russell Cup meet in its heyday and he assisted the football team.

Everyone in Carpinteria, it seems, had some connection to Shel. It was a shock to the community, then, when he unexpectedly died in the early 1960s.

His memory lived on in various sports awards bestowed on outstanding CHS athletes. The Deaderick family was one of note, residing in the Valley through several generations starting with Col. James Deaderick circa 1880. Jim Deaderick, his grandson, was County Supervisor Howe Deaderick’s son. Young Jim contributed to Carp’s cultural history by taking in and nursing Oliver B. Prickett to health from Malaria circa 1925. They had met as students at Cal Berkeley.

Prickett, from Pasadena, enjoyed his stay in Carpinteria so much that he established the Alcazar Theatre here, and found a bride in Margaret Gaynor. The Alcazar is in its 92nd year in 2020.

The CHS Nine had five sophomores, all from the Class of 1922. Clinton Farrar married 1923 grad, Dorothy Martin, and left the local scene. John Lobero, from one of Carpinteria’s pioneer families, was deceased by 1930. William Miller and Harold Talmadge, son of Constable Clark Talmadge, each attended Santa Barbara State College and wound up working in Carpinteria agriculture. The fifth member of the Class of ’22, Linn Unkefer, also attended Santa Barbara

State College, but then transferred to the University of Southern California’s School of Journalism. Initially, Miller and Unkefer partnered in opening a gasoline service station in Carpinteria.

In 1933, Unkefer put his journalism degree to use as the editor and publisher of the progressive Carpinteria Chronicle, a competitor to Arthur Miller Clark’s conservative Carpinteria Herald. Unkefer’s tenure was brief, however, lasting only through the Chronicle’s maiden year. It was bought by Ann W. Riley from California’s Central Valley who was active in Republican Party politics.

Apparently, there was room for two conservative newspapers in the community.

Unkefer rebounded by latching on as the editorial writer for the Stock & Bonds Journal of Los Angeles.

In retrospect, it seems fair to say that the players on the team did their part to contribute to Carpinteria’s way of life, both in large and small ways, brief in some cases, to enduring over generations in others.

Towards doing a little bit of the right thing

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH In my previous column (It’s All Surfing, “Friends in low places,” CVN, Vol. 26, No. 34), I wrote of mildly unpleasant encounters I’d had with Chinese people in the Cape Verde Islands. “But this is not a screed against Chinese people,” I stated, “I know they are a great society in many ways.” My loving wife pointed out that the sentiment was at best a backhanded compliment, and she’s right.

“Some of my best friends are black,” goes the clichéd expression of the white person proclaiming they’re not racist, and any “minority” could be substituted for “black.” With incidents of hate crimes against people of Asian descent having gone up in the United States since the pandemic hit, I do not want to contribute to stereotypes or denigration of any kind. I still broadly disagree with many of the policies of the Chinese government, but more important is a willingness for fellowship with people of all backgrounds.

Like most Americans, I have been broken hearted and pissed off about ongoing police killings and the deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and Mr. Arbery chased down and murdered, too.

But if I am to be something more than a liberal-leaning ninny, spewing inanities, I must do something. One small step was participating in the Carpinteria protest organized by Laura Flores, Jacqueline Urrutia, Isa Alarcon and Joanna Romero, juniors at Carpinteria High School. My wife and I brought our kids along, and whether five-year-old Miles truly comprehends what his chant of “No justice, No peace” actually means, he knows from experience now that a group of citizens can gather on the streets and make their concerns be heard.

The other move I’ve made (edging into dangerously self-congratulatory territory here) is to auction two new surfboards online and donate the proceeds to the NAACP. I bring this up to urge anyone reading to think of some action, some movement, towards more equality in our nation. One board has sold for $600, and the other is fetching a whopping $1,900—about twice what its regular price will be. I chose the NAACP because of the organization’s long history of elevating the black community and pushing for improvements in education, housing, health care and criminal justice—the core areas I believe are paramount to this country living up to its promise of liberty and justice for all of its citizens.

Growing up in Newport Beach, I gradually became aware that there were virtually no black people in my commu-

nity at all. (I was pleased recently to see a protest took place there and someone wrote on social media, “If it can happen in Newport, it can happen anywhere!”)

My father told me when I was a teen that the Newport police had a code: “NIN” and I’m sure you can guess what the other “N” stood for “…In Newport.”

And another time, when I was about eight-years-old and playing with the brothers next door, their cousin came into town from Visalia I think, and in his pick-up was a sawed-off baseball bat with silver duct tape wrapped at its base for a grip. I asked him what it was for and he said, with a mean-looking grin seeping across his face, “It’s my (N-word)-be-cool-stick.” The casual violence of it, and the damage such an implement would cause, scared the hell out of me.

But other than these appalling instances from my own “Maybury-bythe-Sea” upbringing, I was never exposed to explicit racism.

Then again, the very fact of growing up in a nearly all-white context is most certainly an effect of racism—in fact, it is the intended effect. Not 50 miles away, the long boulevards and working-class neighborhoods of South LA stand in sharp contrast to the manicured dreamscape of Newport Beach. The kids who grow up in beach towns have a much higher likelihood of becoming surfers; the kids who grow up in besieged neighborhoods have a much higher likelihood of less-benign outcomes. Redlining policies insured these separations. In the U.S. Navy I got to live, work and become friends with young men from all over the country, and that was very good for me. But my love of surfing has kept me coming back to coastal communities that still stand as racial enclaves. So, while I have clearly not dedicated my life to social justice, I want to at least be vigilant about the words I use and the actions I take.

Baby boy Beau

At 12 weeks old, Beau is just a puppy enjoying the best of Carpinteria life with his human companion David Easley. A Linden Avenue resident, Beau’s usual route is to cruise the Downtown T from the beach to Sawyer with an occasional detour to Rincon Brewery. At home, Beau likes to chill out and chew antlers.

Meet the Trail Stewards of Franklin Trail

From left, Roger Brand, Bill Hvorst and John Culbertson take a break after a shift working on Franklin Trail. The trio has recently been named the official “Trail Stewards for the Franklin Trail,” according to Linda Nevens an avid hiker. Over the years, Brand, Hvorst and Culbertson have installed benches, cut back and cleared trails (especially of poison oak), cleared away fallen trees, filled in holes made by gophers and ground squirrels, and installed steps in steep places. “They do this out of the goodness of their hearts and for all of the hikers who love to hike the trails,” said Nevens. The Friends of the Franklin Trail and Montecito Trails Foundation regularly bring crews to cut back overgrowth but, it is not nearly enough, said Nevens. Hikers who would like to help can find shovels, hoes and McClouds at various places on the trail. “It is also easy to bring your own clippers to trim back the overgrowth while you are hiking,” said Nevens.

Red-shouldered Hawk chicks take maiden voyage

The Red-shouldered Hawk chicks featured in last week’s, “In the Naturehood” column took their first flights on June 2. They crash landed into nearby trees and eventually managed to return to the nest. One chick is tawny colored and the other darker brown, so they are easy to distinguish. The darker chick is larger and was first to fly. Pictured here, they are back on the nest and waiting for their parents to feed them.

Congratulations, graduates, YOU DID IT! It is my pleasure to honor and celebrate this distinguished Class of 2020. Through wildfires, debris flows and now a pandemic, you persevered with grace and grit during these unprecedented times and extraordinary challenges.

We are sad and disappointed that the Covid-19 pandemic totally disrupted school and the milestone events of your senior year.

Online learning, virtual prom and a drive-in graduation ceremony are not what you expected or deserved.

However, we are Warriors and Carpinteria Strong, and no pandemic is going to diminish our pride nor celebration of each and every one of our proud graduates.

Moments like these reveal what you have truly learned growing up in our schools and what really matters. We are so proud of your personal growth, perseverance, resilience and kindness which are needed

to get through this, to remain hopeful and optimistic, and to dream big about your future.

Carpinteria HigH SCHool gerardo Cornejo, prinCipal On behalf of Carpinteria High School and Rincon High School, we would like to congratulate and recognize the Class of 2020.

Over the last four years, we have traveled together and experienced many things that have only made you stronger in your beliefs and overall character.

Those experiences have defined you as the person you are today.

Four years ago, you began your education journey by entering CHS gymnasium and experiencing the energy from upperclassmen and teachers welcoming you to Link Crew. It was the first day you walked the halls of Carpinteria High School and it was the first day of deciding what you were going to make of your four years there.

Soon you began to explore athletics, cheerleading, FFA, student clubs, service opportunities; you learned to balance academics with extra-curricular activities and you also forged great friendships with new people and with your supporting teachers.

You attended your first dance, MORP or Homecoming, developed your 10-plan, signed up for your first AP course, enrolled in your first college dual enrollment course, competed in your first FFA contest, performed in front of an audience in your first Muses production or band concert, participated in your first athletic competition, performed your first cheer at a Friday Night Football game, faced a challenging academic course, began working a part time job, completed your first major science lab, challenged yourself to be the best student in your English class, faced the first challenging math problem, had your first debate in your history class, completed your first art or ceramics project, ran the mile run in under 5 minutes, presented in your Spanish class, enjoyed eating your projects in culinary arts, evacuated due to a wildfire, and now you have experienced stay at home orders due to Covid-19. All these experiences have shaped you into the person you currently are and, in your lifetime, you will face more experiences that will define the person you will be.

We want you to know that we are proud of your accomplishments.

We are so sorry this has impacted your senior year and the events that are the components of this milestone. We cannot recreate these milestones, but thanks to our community, you have been offered some new experiences to also cherish…the flags down Linden and Carpinteria avenues, senior gift bags and a drive-in graduation.

Soon, you will be graduating, and we want to recognize you for achieving one of the many milestones of your lifetime. For some it was easy. For others it was challenging. But the important thing to remember is that nothing is accomplished by ourselves—we need the support of others and we must be willing to support others who need our help. Walking across the stage to receive your diploma belongs to everyone who stood by you over the last 17-18 years.

Take time to thank your family, friends, teachers.

We at CHS/RHS would like to let you in on a little secret—your best days are yet to come. The joy and triumph you feel during your senior year as you accomplish your goals pales in comparison to the joy and triumph you will feel as a grown person accomplishing your dreams. When you graduate from college, we will be cheering for you. When you begin your new job, we will be cheering for you.

When you buy your first car, we will be cheering for you, when you buy your first home, we will be cheering for you. We are so excited about your graduation, and we wish you good luck in everything that you do. Go and conquer the world, become a person of change… make our world a better place.

Carpinteria Children’s Project volunteer David Martinez grabs a bundle of fresh greens and veggies as hundreds of cars make their way from Carpinteria State Beach to 8th Street for Carpinteria’s weekly emergency food distribution. Amidst historic food insecurity, Covid19’s fallout has brought the number of Carpinterians in need of food from 500 per month to 2,200 each week. CARPinTERiA MiDDLE SChooL LiSA o’ShEA, PRinCiPAL To the eighth grade RedHawk scholars, all of your teachers and the staff at Carpinteria Middle School are proud of your determination and hard work over the past three years. It was such a JOY to see each one of you every week, and it was wonderful building CMS into a unique and caring learning community together. No one could have predicted how this year would end, and having the year change so abruptly has been challenging for all of us. We are missing one another, and we are missing our shared experience of being RedHawks. Yet, we are so proud of how you have changed course and have risen to the challenges of remote learning at home.

You will all be transitioning from RedHawks to Warriors soon, and we here at CMS wish you all the best. You will always be a RedHawk, and we will remember you fondly. We know that you

are well-prepared for the future challenges you will face, for you all show academic endurance and have set worthy goals. We know you will not stop until you are proud. Though your teachers, counselors, CMS staff and I really want to celebrate with you in person, we are grateful to CVN for graciously allowing us to celebrate you here, in this hometown newspaper, that represents Carpinteria so well.
