Extreme Fire Danger restrictions implemented

california Forest service has announced that Los Padres Forest is under extreme Fire danger restrictions until at least dec. 31, 2019. the increased restrictions are intended to help prevent similar wildfires. Under Extreme Fire Danger restrictions wood and charcoal fires are prohibited in all areas of the Los Padres Forest; camping stoves are allowed only within Designated Campfire Use Sites and with a California Campfire Permit; no camp stoves are permitted outside of the Designated Campfire Use Sites, meaning no camp stoves in the backcountry; and there is no smoking outside of a Designated Campfire Use Site or inside an enclosed vehicle or building.

Trash pickup delayed one day for holiday

In observance of Thanksgiving, the employees of E.J. Harrison & Sons are taking the day off on thursday, nov. 28. as a result, carpinteria residential customers will have their trash and green waste collected a day later than normal, on Friday, nov. 29.

Capps canvases Carpinteria in race for County Supervisor

Late in August, Santa Barbara School Board member Laura Capps announced her candidacy for First District Supervisor, which represents 84,000 constituents from the Carpinteria Valley and Santa Barbara’s Eastside and Downtown neighborhoods.

The seat is currently held by Carpinteria resident Das Williams, who began his first term in 2017 after serving on the California State Assembly and Santa Barbara City Council. As of press time, Capps and Williams were the only two candidates in the race, with a filing deadline of Dec. 6, for the March 3, 2020 ballot.

With a hometown incumbent to beat, Capps has hit the streets in Carpinteria canvassing the constituency. While some residents, in particular members of the neighborhood group Concerned Carpinterians, helped to bolster her candidacy early on, praising her hard lines on cannabis cultivation, many are still struggling to understand what sets her apart from the incumbent, who is also a registered-Democrat, an environmentalist and has long been actively engaged in public schools and social programs.

Capps told CVN that her candidacy is about “listening” and “making sure government works.” Her two main issues are campaign finance reform and tightening cannabis regulations. Capps, who voted for Prop 64, legalizing recreational cannabis in California, promises to push for campaign donation caps, to ban contributions from anyone with business before the Board of Supervisors, to limit cannabis cultivation permits and increase buffer zones and to lead further study on health and environmental impacts of cannabis cultivation. In ongoing hearings, these concerns have been addressed by the board, including Supervisor Williams, but according to Capps and her supporters, they haven’t gone far enough.

Indeed, there’s a sense that Capps’ campaign has risen from the cannabis debates, where Williams has been criticized by the group Concerned Carpinterians for not writing tougher regulations to control odor, limit permits and widen the buffer zone, and for taking campaign contribu-

“Contract negotiations, they can take a long time,” said rob kirsch, vice president of the Santa Barbara County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, “It’s just not feasible and I think it infringes on our First Amendment rights if you aren’t allowed to participate in the political process due to having something before the board.”

“I want to enact real campaign reform,” Williams told CVN, “a combination of contribution limits and public financing. But Capps’ proposal advantages the interests of her donors against our firefighters and public safety officers.

But even people who don’t care about that are behind my campaign because they don’t like the money that has gone into it… The truth is that the political donations that were accepted around the time of the drafting of ordinances are a real problem.”

Capps’ “Make Government Accountable Plan” proposes establishing an ethics committee and limiting campaign contributions. “On the state and federal level there are already limits. Why can’t we here? It’s about time,” said Capps.

But it’s not just how much that Capps

wants to curb, it’s also when. She intends to ban contributions from all entities that have a decision in front of the board and points to major contributions from the oil and cannabis industry as particularly problematic.

However, Capps’ plan disenfranchises other groups that also contribute to candidates, such as the Santa Barbara County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, that represents 480 Sheriff’s Office employees, including deputies, dispatchers and district attorney investigators, throughout the county, including Carpinteria. The union, which has endorsed Das Williams, told CVN that they are not opposed to capping contributions, but they don’t agree with excluding groups from the

Capps has garnered endorsements from several prominent women, including publisher and philanthropist Sarah Miller McCune, tech entrepreneur Lynda Weinman, and former county supervisors Susan rose and Janet Wolf. In addition to knocking on doors, Capps has been holding house parties, largely attended by women. Capps believes this support from women stems from her track-record in promoting gender equity in positions of leadership.

In 2015, Capps chaired the Commission for Women Members, whose report found that among 103 county boards and commissions, women make up 33 percent of appointments and men make up 51 percent (with 16 percent vacant).

In Carpinteria, women hold 45 percent of appointments. Across the county, the study found that women have higher representation in the areas of Arts & Humanities (73 percent). In Land Use & Planning women represent 37 percent.

“We need more women in office,” said Capps. “We only have one woman on the Board of Supervisors. We need more women on every level in office. We need more women in power.”

The next election for First District Supervisor will be held on March 3, 2020.

Alzheimer’s Association to present Carpinteria-based research

On Jan. 29, 2020, from 3 to 5 p.m. the California Central Coast Alzheimer’s Association will host a community forum with research updates at the Carpinteria Children’s Project.

More than 15 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. In 2016, caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias provided an estimated 18.2 billion hours of unpaid assistance, a contribution to the nation valued at $230.1 billion. To address these issues in Carpinteria, last March the Alzheimer’s Association conducted a community forum, a town hall style meeting that gathered the Carpinteria community to ask questions about the disease, discuss their experiences, learn about resources and help us discover how to better support the Carpinteria community.

The Santa Cruz Island Foundation (SCIF) has purchased the former Bank of America building at the corner of Carpinteria and Linden avenues. SCIF is a nonprofit created in 1985, whose mission is, “The California Islands—saving their history, telling their stories.”

The new location will be SCIF’s permanent headquarters as well as a museum, historical archives and educational center. “It is our desire this will complete a ‘cultural triangle’ in Carpinteria, embracing the Carpinteria Valley Museum and Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center,” representatives from SCIF told CVN. “This opportunity has only been realized with the help of many generous members of our community,” SCIF representatives continued. “Much work is still to be done, and more details to follow next year.”

More than 1,800 people are experiencing homelessness in Santa Barbara County.

To help these individuals and families stay warm this winter, the Santa Barbara County Public Defender’s Office is accepting donations of sleeping bags, hats, gloves, jackets, clothing, socks, shoes, hygiene products, thermal underwear, scarves and backpacks.

New or lightly used donations are being accepted until Dec. 11 during regular business hours at the Public Defender’s offices in at 1100 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara.

Tax deductible donations will also be accepted for the purchase of new sleeping bags and undergarments through the Public Defender ’s partnerships.

Checks may be made out to Family Service Agency of Santa Barbara County or Americorps. Donations can also be made online at fsacares.org, where donors should specify that it’s for the sleeping bag drive.

In order to receive donated goods, those experiencing homelessness will need to attend the distribution event on Friday, Dec. 13 from noon to 2 p.m. or until supplies last at each office of the Public Defender.

Remembering a friend

My friend Mark Johnson was an original and authentic person. People who came in contact or worked with him knew he would always listen, and then give a direct and honest opinion on the subject being discussed. He was unafraid of speaking his mind. Mark was one of the best craftsmen and cabinet makers in town, and would always improve an idea or project with his commonsense approach. He was a loyal friend and extremely dedicated to his wife Jodine and his son Matt. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.

Carpinteria is not a city in crisis. It hasn’t changed a bit. When local farmers decided to grow a new crop—legal cannabis—a small group of people went on the attack and continue to try to divide a community by saying those involved with cannabis, or who are even OK with it here, are bad.

The LA Times article that recently came out was silly and only pointed out that local farms are an important part of life in Carpinteria, both financially and as a firewall against development. What would we have in the foothills? Farms or condos?

This whole conversation has gotten a bit boring. Yawn.

As a big proponent of organic farming, I’ve followed the cannabis farming phenomenon with great interest. What strikes me most is if all these greenhouses no longer apply dangerous chemicals to plants, and avocados growers are rethinking pesticide use along with them, our small agricultural valley is cleaner than ever. That’s a positive for everyone living in Carpinteria and for the natural environment, including bees and other pollinators.

It’s well documented that conventional pesticides kill bees. We all know when it’s a spray day, because helicopters are overhead ready to drop death from the sky.

For me, cannabis is an effective medicine. My breathing is somewhat impaired due to a childhood bout with polio. I am prone to bronchitis, and cannabis has saved my life more than once. It is a proven bronchial dilator. I am not much of a smoker, but can choke down a few puffs until my airway opens and I can breathe again. Please do not deny patients access to the medicine that we need because you do not like the smell. Under Prop. 215, the Compassionate Use Act, cannabis is medicine and patients have rights.

The marijuana growers are griefstricken as their biggest supporter, advocate and friend will soon be gone. It was revealed that Dennis Bozanich, the county’s cannabis czar, has quit. Bozanich is responsible for putting together the disastrous cannabis licensing and tax ordinance. County Supervisor Das Williams followed his direction blindly, and now he too will pay a price for destroying the character of the Carpinteria Valley. With an election pending, it is no coincidence that Bozanich “resigned.”

Williams will have a hard time spinning the truth come 2020.

Most growers have already made the switch, and it has been proven that people will pay more for organics. The people want healthier food and flowers to consume, and Carpinteria farmers will give them that.

Cannabis farmers are Carpinterians and are a huge part of the strength in our community today. A front-page article in the Sunday, Nov. 10, LA Times inexplicably claims that cannabis interests have somehow infiltrated Carpinteria. How do farmers that were already here for generations infiltrate groups they already worked with for generations?

Joe Mozingo, LA Times writer, should spend a bit more time, in “our” Carpinteria. Chances are he’d infiltrate Carpinteria groups and causes too. Perhaps we will accept him despite his writing mean and dishonest things about our town… In all seriousness, this conversation is getting tiresome. What is most concerning is that Concerned Carpinterians are intent on dividing people. We get it. The smell can bother you sometimes, and yet so does the fertilizer being sprayed on the freeway project.

To spin conspiracy theories and then sell them off as reality to media is not the way we should treat each other. It’s easy to say “a lot of people” are in cahoots in a small town because everyone here is in cahoots. That’s why we live in a small town.

I recommend getting involved in community causes like our local farmers have always done. Soon, you might just find yourself building bridges with neighbors, learning things about each other and not obsessing about negativity. It’s about time some people in the community stop using

Blame it on Mother Nature

Some do not like the smell of marijuana permeating the air and have launched a NIMBY-like campaign against growers, claiming that they are not members of the community and their money is not acceptable to support our schools. Is it just those who farm the stuff who should not be allowed to donate to our schools because their money smells?

What about landowners, lawyers, accountants, plumbers, electricians, hedgefund managers, investment groups, researchers and shell companies that also profit off the now legal crop? Is their money somehow tainted? And the dance teachers, cheerleaders, Junior Lifeguards and others who accept students from families connected to growers? Are they complicit and to be ostracized, not allowed to volunteer their time, money and talents to our schools? Where does this exclusion stop?

Marijuana has a long history in Carpinteria, 100 years that I know of, and before that it was used as medicine and grown for its fibers by indigenous people. Hemp (from marijuana plants) is the homespun of pioneers and the canvas used by covered wagons and sailing ships.

Even my husband’s small family-owned company gave us excellent insurance.

That number is probably more now that the unemployment rate is down to 3.5 percent. Insurance and other benefits like paid vacation, paid sick leave, etc. are great perks to attract good workers.

But with “Medicare for All,” by its very definition, there will be no private insurance—you get what the government says you get. Elizabeth Warren finally confirmed that her “Medicare for All” will cost taxpayers a total of $34 trillion dollars in new government spending, bringing overall spending on this to $54 trillion, give or take a billion.

Why would anyone even want to take your private insurance away from you?

Warren says the middle class will be spared the tax, but you know that can’t be true. To pay for it she says she will tax your employer, tax “the rich” (whoever they are). There will be fees on financial transactions, whatever that means. When you buy your Starbucks in the morning, is this a financial transaction?

An alert reader noticed that in the CoastalView.com article, “Making Montecito Safer, Part 2” (Vol. 26, No. 8) an analogy using Highway 101 to illustrate the size of the Jan. 9 debris flow incorrectly stated that there were six lanes from Casitas Pass Road to Storke Road in Goleta. Actually, there are only four lanes at a couple of sections along that stretch. The math is correct, but a more accurate statement would have referred to the 101 “corridor,” including the lanes, the median strip and the shoulders, which were the basis for the author’s calculations.

Monday, Nov. 11

10:26 a.m. / Commercial Burglary / 5800 block Via Real

Between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., an unknown suspect(s) entered a nursery office and stole $8,000 in cash.

3:47 a.m. / Narcotics Possession / Highway 101 at La Conchita

A deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for expired tags and the registered owner having a suspended license. The driver failed to yield and kept driving even though the deputy had his lights and siren on. The vehicle eventually yielded near La Conchita (Southbound on 101). A man was contacted and he was less than cooperative. He was handcuffed and detained while deputies tried to determine his identity.

A search of the vehicle turned up a

scale and several ripped baggies containing a white powdery substance. The substance was field-tested and it came back positive for cocaine. While speaking with the man, he complained his heart hurt and the deputy discovered that he had swallowed approximately one gram of cocaine. Medics were called and the man was cited for possession of cocaine.

The vehicle was towed.

4:44 a.m. / Disturbance / 3rd Street

Deputies responded to a possible attempted burglary in progress. A caller stated that an adult male was knocking on the door of the residence. The caller was not on-scene, but was watching the incident unfold via his Ringer Video.

The man was frantically knocking on the door and peering inside. Upon deputies’ arrival, another neighbor saw the man on their property as well, and believed the

subject was either intoxicated or under the influence. Deputies checked the area with negative results.

Tuesday, Nov. 12

7:50 a.m. / Assault / 1100 block Casitas Pass Road

A man confronted another man over a personal matter. During the confrontation, the man used a pocket knife to puncture three of the victim’s truck tires, intimidated the victim with a knife and punched him in the face. The man with the knife was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

8:18 p.m. / Stolen Mail / Highway 101 at Bailard Avenue

A traffic stop was made at Highway 101 and Bailard for false tags. A woman was driving with a male passenger, and a vehicle search was conducted. Stolen mail, along with meth were found. The man and woman were arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

11:55 p.m. / Possession / 4200 block Via Real

A deputy contacted a woman sitting in her vehicle in the parking lot of a motel.

A records check showed she had a felony warrant and four misdemeanor warrants for her arrest. The felony warrant was for bringing drugs into the jail. During a search of the vehicle, meth and paraphernalia were found. In addition to the warrants, the woman was charged with narcotics offenses and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Wednesday, Nov. 13

9:34 a.m. / Fraud / 5000 block Carpinteria Avenue

The owner of a facilities repair service found that four checks had been forged and cashed at Mechanic’s Bank in Goleta and Santa Barbara. The suspect is possibly known and there is an ongoing investigation.

10:57 a.m. / Fraud / Via Real

A local business reported a fraudulent check was cashed for $21,700 in South Carolina. Patrol will conduct a follow-up.

11:35 p.m. / Found Meth / 500 block Linden Avenue

An employee at a market said he found a baggie containing methamphetamine on the floor. A deputy booked the suspected meth for destruction.

Thursday, Nov. 14

7:26 a.m. / Vandalism / Via Real

A caller parked a vehicle at an apartment complex on Nov. 13. The caller returned to their vehicle in the morning and found all four tires slashed.

Friday, Nov. 15

10:58 a.m. / Public Intoxication / 5500 block Carpinteria Avenue

Motel staff kicked a woman out of her motel room for causing a disturbance.

She was intoxicated to the point she was no longer able to care for herself. She was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Instrument grants help ensure local music education

The Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation recently gave $26,818 for Carpinteria High School music education. The money came from the foundation’s Instrument Request Fund grant. Elise Unruh, performing arts instructor at CHS and band director at Carpinteria Middle School, applied for the grant with a wish list for instruments.

Unruh has indicated that the funds will be used to purchase several instruments for the high school band program—including a new full-sized concert tuba.

New timpani drums to replace the old ones used at CHS since the campus opened in the 1960s, and several upgraded intermediate-level trumpets and saxophones will also be purchased.

“We look forward to receiving the instruments a little bit later in the school year for use during concert band season,” said Unruh, who received a Crystal Apple Educator Award last spring and was honored at CEF’s Carp-a-Cabana event this year. “I am so thrilled that CEF got this grant for us.”

cal instruments courtesy of the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation. Spearheaded

by Barry Enticknap of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria, the grant provided cellos, violins and hard-shell cello cases.

Thomas Pavia, who teaches instrumental music in grades three to eight and leads the string orchestra at CMS, said “Barry (Enticknap) has been very helpful in advocating for the third- to eighth-grade instrumental music program. The Rotary Club of Carpinteria has supported grades three- to eight-instrumental for the last nine years.” The Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation will fund $26,727 toward new and refurbished instruments and repairs through their partnership with Nick Rail Music.

“The research is clear, music helps to boost so many other subjects and through this grant we will be able to ensure that our students continue to have the opportunities to participate in music,” noted CEF board president Casey Balch. “Music is such an invaluable part of education, and thanks to the SB Bowl Foundation’s support, our students will have access to the instruments they need.”

Area principals detail plans for student achievement

Principals from Carpinteria High School (CHS), Carpinteria Middle (CMS) and Aliso and Canalino elementary schools reported on their plans to increase student performance and achievement. Both board members and Superintendent Diana Rigby were impressed by the educators’ plans and proposals, with Rigby declaring them “the best reports I’ve seen in my many decades of working” as an administrator. The board also accepted, with gratitude, a check for more than $60,000 from the Carpinteria Education Foundation, the proceeds from this year’s Carp-A-Cabana.

Principal Gerardo Cornejo of CHS led the evening off with a datadriven presentation on student performance on statewide exams.

Cornejo was “happy to note” progress in raising English and Language Arts scores, even as Math results continue to lag behind. Eleventh graders in particular came in for praise, as CHS posted the second highest Math results in the county, although at 44 percent the number is still below district goals of 50 percent of students meeting or exceeding statewide standards.

ing faculty to share successful instruction strategies and to make full use of the district’s data tracking software, Illuminate. Reminding the board that the “first year of high school dictates how well a student will do in the following years,” Cornejo stressed early intervention for freshman students experiencing trouble with the transition to high school. The CHS principal expressed confidence in his school’s future, saying “we finally have the right staff doing the right stuff.”

Lisa O’Shea, the principal of CMS, also pointed to targeted student test score growth.

Forty-three percent of seventh graders met or exceeded statewide standards, an increase of more than 10 percent over last year. While all grade levels showed some improvement, O’Shea indicated the importance of continuing to focus on ELA progress, noting “this has been very much a focus for our teachers.”

Local disaster inspires international work trip

Emily Calkins was in her junior year at Cate School during the Thomas Fire and Montecito debris flows. As her community struggled to rebuild after the natural disasters, Calkins couldn’t help feeling grateful for the first responders who saved so many lives. She recalled when the beautiful city of Cinque Terre, Italy, faced heavy damages after a major flood in 2011, and was inspired to take action on a global level.

“I had seen the videos and news articles of the flood in Cinque Terre, but only when there was water at my own doorstep did I fully understand the consequences and destruction left by this disaster,” Calkins said. “Locally, we are lucky enough to have a government and natural disaster teams to help us repair the damage and transition back to normal life as soon as possible. Unfortunately, in Italy the government is slow to act, and pleas for help sometimes get lost in the path to action.”

Traveling internationally for the first time alone, Calkins set out to help rebuild unstable Italian vineyard terraces at a UNESCO World Heritage site in order to keep them from falling into the ocean. The terraces are vital to protect ancient villages built on

steep cliffs. Calkins learned the complex art of Italian masonry, which does not use any materials outside its environment in the northern region of Liguria. Calkins completed the restoration of two, 10-foot-tall terraces in a month of volunteer work with support from a local group called Save Vernazza.

Many of the traditional workers from Cinque Terre have left tending the terraces to pursue profitable careers in tourism, and the exodus has ultimately left the region in a vulnerable state. “During my stay, I raised awareness of the effects of over-tourism and helped advertise for ecotourism,” Calkins said. “When I came home, I taught my local Girl Scouts about the skill of masonry and the history of the Italian vineyards, which is historically women’s work even though it involves moving large rocks and working the land.” Additionally, she worked to raise awareness of the harm of over-tourism with an American blogger who lives in Italy.

Calkins hopes that others will be inspired to leave every place they visit better than they found it. “I hope that I’ve started a wave of people seeking to have real experiences while traveling and make a difference in the places they travel to,” she said.

With winter weather on the horizon, a portion of purchases from The Farmacy of Santa Barbara will benefit Freedom Warming Centers of Santa Barbara County through the end of the year. FWC, the only organization of its kind in the county, provides temporary shelters to protect the housing-challenged during cold and wet winter conditions. In Carpinteria, there are warming sites at Carpinteria Veterans Memorial Building and Carpinteria Community Church. Tuesday, Nov. 19, was the first night the sites were activated this winter.

This partnership was made possible by members of CARP Growers, the nonprofit cannabis farmers group in Carpinteria Valley.

“The clients we serve are in need, so this partnership will put us in a better position to serve them,” said Kathy Hayes, Director of Freedom Warming Centers. “Money raised through The Farmacy will purchase blankets, personal hygiene products and warm, dry socks, which are the top need for our clients and one that many of us who are more fortunate take for granted.”

“We’ve seen Freedom Warming Centers fundraising outreach throughout the area, so we put together a program that will allow our customers to make a big difference in people’s lives through the products they choose,” said Graham Farrar owner of The Farmacy and Glass House Farms.

“Responsible farmers in Carpinteria all stepped up to pitch in to the fundraiser.”

Brands included in the give-back program are Glass House Farms, Pacific Stone Brand, Headwaters, Cresco California, Autumn Brands and Josh D Farms.

Upon purchase of a CARP Growerscertified product, 5 percent of the purchase price will automatically be donated to Freedom Warming Centers. The program will run through the end of 2019, at which time the funds will be donated.

Dayka makes Eagle Scout

Carpinteria High School senior Kameron Ryan Dayka has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. Representing Carpinteria Troop 50, Dayka’s accomplishment is the result of more than 11 years of adventure, fun, work and dedication to the scouting program.

Dayka has performed community service and provided service and leadership for his troop while satisfying the requirements for the Eagle rank. In addition to the traditional outdoor skills learned in Boy Scouts, Dayka has earned a host of merit badges including those from Wilderness Survival to Citizenship in the World. His Eagle project was a flag depository for old and worn flags that need to be retired, and is located at the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District station on Walnut Avenue.

Faded or tattered American flags left in the drop box will be properly disposed of by the Boy Scouts of America in a dignified and ceremonious fashion. Dayka was formally presented the Eagle Scout award at a Court of Honor ceremony at the Carpinteria Community Church on Nov. 16, and also received a Certificate of Recognition from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a Certificate of Recognition from the Colonel George C. High school girls soccer explodes onto local scene

In the span of just one week, local high school girls soccer has captured the spotlight. On Thursday, Nov. 14, Carpinteria High School senior Dayne Wagner signed a national letter of intent to play on the pitch at California State University Northridge next year during a ceremony held in front her supportive classmates at the school’s library.

Wagner who shined as a Warrior her freshman year, went on to play club soccer at the Eagles Club Soccer Academy over the past two years, never getting the opportunity to return to the turf at Valley Memorial Stadium. The senior still has some club obligations to fulfill but is expected to be back in a Carpinteria uniform in early December.

At the beginning of this week, Nov. 18, Carpinteria traveled up to the mesa to take on local rival Cate School in both squads’ opening match. The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead and welcomed the return of senior Aly Springer who missed all of last season because of an injury. Springer responded with a free kick goal from about 20 yards out for the first goal of the year.

The second goal was from another senior Yaritza Santes Rosales, who finished off a pass from fellow senior Erika Estrada.

Then it was Estrada’s turn to get on the scoreboard as she lifted the ball over the head of the Rams keeper for the third goal.

However, Cate showed some offense of their own with two well-placed goals to cut the lead to 3-2. But the Warriors finished off the home team with another goal by Springer and then Santes Rosales who each had two on the afternoon to catapult their team to a 5-2 victory.

“So, I got my Aly (Springer) back and Dayne (Wagner) as you know,” said Estrada, part of the trio that played together during their freshman year. “It’s kind of nice to start with a win because it brings you more of a positive mood.” Estrada

is one of the team captains. Both her sisters, Elizabeth and Giselle, played Warriors soccer as well.

Uncharacteristically for the Carpinteria girls soccer program, wins were hard to come by last season as they finished 0-9-1 in the inaugural year of the Citrus Coast League (CCL). The Warriors graduated eight seniors from last year’s side, including standouts Emmelly Santillan and Kendra Meza. But they bring back five seniors this year to go along with five returning juniors and six freshmen.

Another senior standout from last season, goalkeeper Isabel Studt, has also graduated, but Carpinteria got a big boost from freshman Ariana Lounsbury who made her debut against Cate as goalie. “She (Lounsbury) was fearless coming off of her line and had sure hands on any shots coming her way,” explained Warriors coach Charles Bryant.

Lounsbury will likely also receive help from Wagner, who will keep an eye on the back line from her midfield position.

Having scored five goals in the opener, Bryant’s team is expected to get a jolt from junior forward Cydney Smolnikar who also figures to find the back of the net on occasion. “We all work together, and there’s better communication this year,” explained Estrada. “Getting Dayne (Wagner) back will help us to defeat more teams offensively,” added Springer, also a team captain.

However, getting through the rugged CCL should be a challenge. Fillmore won league last season, but only one game in the loss column separated them from the other top two teams, Nordhoff and Santa Paula. “I’m excited, we have a good senior class, very good chemistry,” said Bryant. The Warriors home opener is Thursday afternoon, Nov. 21, against La Reina with play beginning at 5 p.m.

November 19 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team hosted their season opener against Trinity at Carpinteria Middle School, falling to the visitors by a score of 54-39. The game began with the Knights getting off to a quick start and going up 7-0. The Warriors got their first bucket, a three from junior Gabriella Graham, but trailed 20-7 at the end of the first. In the second quarter, Carpinteria got a pair of threes from Hannia Hernandez, alongside buckets coming from Kaela Kelley and Gracie Verdugo. Hernandez was the leading scorer for the Warriors with 12 points.

Next up, Carpinteria takes on Providence back home at Warriors Gym.

The United Boys & Girls Clubs Carpinteria Chargers Royal and Navy teams won league championships in both the third/fourth and fifth/sixth grade divisions.

The United Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County’s Carpinteria Chargers earned high marks during the organization’s 2019 flag football season. Local squads won league championships in both the third/fourth and fifth/sixth grade divisions.

Carpinteria’s Chargers Royal Team, coached by Gary Feramisco and Ben Scott, won the third/fourth grade division with a 7-1 record and the Chargers Navy Team, coached by Kevin Monaghan, won the fifth/sixth grade division with a 6-1 record.

The Carpinteria “Chargers Tykes,” the kindergarten-through-second grade group, participated in Future Chargers Flag Football Clinics Teaching Fundamentals under the leadership of Tony De Felicis, assistant club and athletic director. In the Carpinteria Unit’s “Chargers vs. Parents” flag football game, the young Chargers prevailed by a score of 21-16.

November 15 - The Cate School football team traveled to La Canada to take on Flintridge Prep in the Eight-Person CIF-SS Division One quarterfinals. For the second time this year, the Rebels beat the Rams, this time by a score of 35-25. Cate’s sophomore quarterback Will Bouma tossed a handful of touchdowns to senior tight-end Scott Holmes in the third quarter to pull the visitors within 28-25. But, with about 11 minutes left in the game, the Rebels got on the board again to come away with the victory. The Rams finish 6-4 on the year.

November 16 - The Cate School cross country team ran in the CIF-SS Division Five prelims held at Riverside with both the boys and girls teams qualifying for next week’s finals. The Ram girls finished second in their heat and second overall.

Sophomore co-captains Anna DiSorbo and Meena Baher led the way, as DiSorbo took fourth with a time of 19:48 and Baher captured seventh in 20:00 even. Freshman Lylie Bechtel nabbed the 19th spot in 21:05. As for the boys, senior co-captain Tesfa Asmara finished third in 16:50. The Rams finished eighth in their heat, just enough to earn them a trip to the finals.

November 17 - The Cate squash team traveled to San Diego for their first match of the season in the SoCal High School League. The league has three levels: A, B and C. Participating teams are highs schools or club teams made up of junior players.

Cate had an A and B team entered. Despite being a player short, Cate (A) managed to win two of the three matches they played, beating last year’s champions in the process. The four players who travelled are this year’s co-captains, Brandon Man and Ryan Suh, Ophelia Ke and freshman Athena Ke. Their next league match will be on Sunday, Dec. 15 in Orange County.

Girls soccer

November 18 - The Cate School girls soccer team opened the season with a nonleague game against Carpinteria, falling to the Warriors by a score of 5-2. The Rams got goals from Charlotte Weis in the 68th minute and Lilly Riehl in the 75th. Assists on the goals went to Rachel Ma and Neema Mugofwa. Cate goalkeeper Finnian Whelan had 12 saves on the day. “Junior Lilly Riehl led the scoring drive with five shots on frame, followed by senior captain Neema Mugofwa, junior Jolea Moes, sophomore Charlotte Weis, as well as freshman Emie Nam,” said Rams coach Taylor Wyatt. “In our best sequence, starting on the back line with play between senior Kim Rogers and junior Maddy Tunnell, we moved the ball quickly up through the midfield through Neema, onto the right foot of Lilly Riehl who put the second goal away in the 75th minute.” Cate who is now 0-1 on the year.

November 19 - The Cate School boys basketball team traveled to Villanova to open the 2019-20 season, dropping the opener to the Wildcats, 80-77. “Tyler Tom, new to varsity, was tremendous tonight with 18 points, all coming from the three (point line)” said Rams coach Andy Gil. Seniors Parker May and Khadim Pouye had 21 and 16, respectively. “Last season Cate played at Villanova for the Frontier League championship and lost by two, and tonight was another one down to the wire with Villanova pulling away at the end,” explained Gil.

Carlos and Dona Tomasa Rodriguez raised their five children between rose-laden adobe walls.

The rosy history of the Rodriguez family

the rodriguez adobe gained enough fame around the turn of the 19th century to land on the front of a postcard, one of many cards in a series depicting scenes from around Carpinteria. its celebrity came not from the craftsmanship or distinctiveness of the house itself, but from the massive rose plant climbing over its walls and roof. in her 1960 book “la Carpinteria,” Georgia stockton wrote, “this adobe is remembered by early settlers for the laMarque rose which covered the entire house.” the adobe was located on santa Monica road, and Carlos rodriguez lived there with his wife, Dona Tomasa, and their five children, Maria, Tranquilino, Ramon, Josefa, anita and francesca.

Carlos’ grandfather was a member of the 1769 portola expedition. Jose ygnacio rodriguez was born to spanish parents and lived in Baja California until he journeyed north into California with father Junipero serra. He married and fathered 16 children, one of whom was Jose de Jesus, Carlos’ father.

Jose de Jesus married a woman who went on to play a pivotal role in a peace deal with General John Charles fremont in 1847. Bernarda rodriguez, who was by then an old woman with considerable influence over her community, beseeched the general to remain peaceful in dealings with her people, the Californios. not long after their conversation, the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the end to the Mexican-american War, was signed in 1848.

VolkSmaRcH. Find your walking shoes and get ready for the sixth annual Carpinterian Volksmarch scheduled to benefit the Santa Barbara FoodBank. Feet hit the streets in one of the most organized pub crawls in Carpinteria, a not-so-arduous journey clocking in around 2.3 miles in a circuit from Island Brewing Company to Rincon Brewery to the BrewLab and the Apiary and back. This year the entry fee will be two canned items to be donated to the FoodBank. Volksmarch begins at 1 p.m. with Rick Reeves performing at IBC from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
