Cannabis farmer Ed Van Wingerden also grows Carpinteria’s other favorite crop— avocados. His sustainability program connects the two crops in a way that reduces waste and augments the soil at his certified organic avocado ranch.

After harvesting cannabis plants, Ed collects the soil and biomass from the plants (stalks and stems) and turns it into compost at the avocado ranch. If you want to get down to the nitty gritty, he adds horse manure to activate the compost. It provides an incredible soil amendment, covering 60 acres, and the trees cannot get enough of it.

CARP Growers is interested in expanding its soil recycling program. Recycling soils in Carpinteria Valley reduces transportation impacts from shipping it off to commercial compost centers.

Healthy compost at avocado orchards helps to control weeds, pests and disease. It also is great for the trees and reduces irrigation needs.

Teachers and schools rely on parent groups for supplies that enrich classrooms and enhance educational opportunities for all of our students.

This year, Parents for Carpinteria High School has stepped up in amazing ways as our schools have faced tremendous challenges.

In lieu of a traditional graduation, the parents groups teamed up with community partners like CARP Growers to celebrate the graduating Class of 2020 in a big, memorable way. Each senior had her portrait waving over downtown Carpinteria. A fitting and memorable send-off for the students whose senior year was so impacted by the pandemic.

To welcome students back this fall, teachers and the parent group greeted each student with a Spirit Bag containing school supplies and fun items like stickers to connect students to their school. Life is tough when we can’t be together, so each of these actions went a long way to binding the students together and building community. Thank you Parents for Carpinteria High School! WARRIOR SPIRIT NEVER DIES!

Deep Roots: Nearly 5 years of local cannabis farming The public conversation about cannabis has veered in many directions, some speculative and some productive. On the topic of real estate values, community members asserted that the presence of cannabis farming could hurt local home values. Experience now tells us that cannabis farming has not impacted real estate. Carpinteria remains a hot real estate market with increases in home values outpacing comparable markets all over the state. Multiple offers are the norm on any listing in Carpinteria. Cannabis farming hasn’t altered the community or character of Carpinteria. That’s good news! It’s a beach town and a farming town (and a very attractive real estate market.)

County reports nearly 1,000 asymptomatic cases of Covid-19

On Oct. 6, Santa Barbara County reported 9,340 positive cases of Covid-19, indicating 176 new cases in the past week. The county also reports 115 deaths total from Covid-19 related illnesses. Of the 9,340 cases, 948 were classified as asymptomatic with an additional 2,728 cases of unknown symptomatic status or still under investigation.

Of the 118 cases that are still classified as infectious countywide, four are located in the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. The South County region has experienced 199 cases total, including seven deaths. For more information, visit publichealthsbc.org.

City seeks contractor for solar project

In addition to stocking healthy, sustainably sourced food for people, Pacific Health Foods also has the nutritional goods for Carpinteria’s furry friends. Starting this month, Pacific Health is introducing a new line of CBD treats specifically made for pets: Shelter CBD’s beef-flavored dog treats. “It’s extremely common for pets to suffer from anxiety, such as trembling uncontrollably at the sound of loud noises, acting fearful around strangers, or panicking at the vet’s office,” stated Shelter CBD in a release, “That’s why couple, Ryan and Emily Miller, chose to start their own business to create CBD dog treats designed to calm the nerves of stressed-out canines and provide dogs with access to the many other medicinal benefits attributed to cannabidiol (CBD).”

Highway 101 project enters new phase

The Highway 101: Carpinteria project moved into a new phase this week.

Southbound Hwy 101 traffic in the city of Carpinteria will be shifted to the median on some nights and work along the southbound side of the freeway will continue into next year. The city of Carpinteria has opened a call for design-build contractors to establish a prequalification list or short-list for the City Hall Solar Energy Generation and Storage Project. The project includes installation of new solar energy generation with optional energy storage (battery) facilities at Carpinteria City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Among the benefits the city seeks from the project are decreased long-term electric energy costs, self-contained electric power for City Hall as a critical facility in the event of disaster or electric power grid outage, and decreased greenhouse gas emissions. Statements of qualifications must be sent to erinm@ci.carpinteria.ca.us by Thursday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m.

2020 Census deadline extended

The deadline to respond to the 2020 Census has been extended until further notice, possibly as late as Oct. 31, as litigation over the count deadline continues to work its way through the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court. Santa Barbara County residents are urged to respond to the 2020 Census now. The county has asked the public to “take action now, do not wait, to be counted so local Santa Barbara County families and communities get their fair share of resources and representation for the next 10 years.”

The public can respond to the 2020 Census online at my2020census.gov or by phone at (844) 330-2020 (English) or (844) 268-2020 (Spanish). Those who have already received a paper questionnaire can complete and return it in the envelope provided.

Web pages and guides are available in 59 non-English languages, including American Sign Language, as well as braille and large print.

The Census Self-Response Tracker indicates the self-response rates in Santa Barbara County was 71.4 percent as of Sept. 26, which surpasses the 2010 figure of 68.5 percent.

Self-response rates for county cities include Santa Barbara at 72.3 percent, Santa Maria at 67 percent, Goleta at 76.3 percent, Buellton at 74.1 percent, Lompoc at 72.4 percent, Solvang at 74.8 percent, Carpinteria at 70.8 percent, and Guadalupe at 66.2 percent.

Obituary

Robert Leonard Herrick 12/22/1945 – 9/5/2020

Robert Leonard Herrick died suddenly in Santa Barbara, California, on Sept.

5. He was 74. Robert was known to his friends and family as Bob, Bobby, Judge, Dad and Grandpa. He was a fiercely creative and loving human being who lived life to its fullest and will be dearly missed.

Bob was born in Brooklyn, New York on Dec. 22, 1945, to Harry Herrick and Nettie (Rifshin, Herrick) Cohen, both first-generation New Yorkers of Russian and Ashkenazi Jewish heritage. Bob’s father Harry passed away when he was a young boy, and Bob grew up learning from the strength, wit and intelligence of his mother Nettie, older brother Norton and older sister Marlene.

Of Bob’s many passions, he was above all passionate about his wife, Lois, to whom each morning he would say, “I love you. You’re beautiful.” Bob and Lois met in 1971, when Bob was studying at Fordham University School of Law in New York City, and Lois was an undergraduate at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. Three years later, Bob and Lois were married at Madison New Jersey Night Court. In their 46-year marriage, Bob and Lois raised two children and travelled the world.

Bob loved the ocean, the mountains, and great open spaces—referring to the spirit of the land as “God’s Country.”

With his beloved Lois always by his side, he visited the great U.S. National Parks, from Hawaii to Alaska and throughout the American West. Bob and Lois visited Europe several times, the Caribbean and Latin America. Not a day passed in Bob’s life that he did not seek joy and discovery.

He loved chocolate, dancing, fireworks and sports. He was forever young.

Bob practiced law in Monticello, New York, in his private practice for two decades. He earnestly believed in justice and an unbiased judicial system and he felt the bitter pain of the falsely accused and wrongfully convicted. In his early career, Bob worked for Legal Aid in New York City, and later took on pro bono cases. After retiring from law, he researched cases of men and women inmates who claimed they were wrongfully imprisoned, carrying on years-long correspondences in which he sought to educate prisoners of their rights, and advocate for their appeals to be heard.

In 1995, Bob and Lois moved to Florida to be closer to his mother Nettie Cohen and to enjoy semi-retirement. In Florida, Bob opened the Palm Beach Coin Laundry where he operated a small business for 20 years. In 2014, Bob and Lois moved to Santa Barbara, California to be closer to their daughter Debra and grandson Jonah Ollin. An amateur tennis player his whole life, Bob quickly made friends on the tennis and pickle ball courts. He also volunteered for the literacy program at Santa Barbara Central Library and other organizations he cared about, such as Santa Barbara Symphony’s youth music van, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, and the Teen Court juvenile justice diversion program of the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.

Bob was a deeply religious person.

He was tremendously curious and inquisitive, and reveled in asking the big questions, finding comfort and beauty in God’s existence. He studied the complexity of Judaism his entire life, and in his final years, he belonged to the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara and the Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara.

Bob is survived by his wife Lois Herrick of Santa Barbara; his son Harry (Rachel) Herrick of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; his daughter Debra (Arturo) Heredia Herrick of Ventura, California; his brother Norton (Elayne) Herrick of Mendham, New Jersey; his sister Marlene (Howard) Weiss of Boca Raton, Florida; and his grandchildren Genevieve, Hunter, Evelyn and Jonah Ollin. Bob was predeceased by his father Harry Herrick and his mother Nettie Cohen. Bob also leaves behind many cherished relatives, friends, and tennis and poker buddies.

Robert Herrick was laid to rest in a private ceremony at Santa Barbara Cemetery.

Howard School reopens for preschool

The Howard School welcomed preschool and pre-kindergarten students to its new Linden Avenue campus with autumn and apple investigations. “Preschool is a tender age and presenting a holistic approach that builds the whole child experience is incorporated into daily lessons,” shared preschool director Monica Robarge. Music, crafts, science, literature, math, technology, field trips and hand-on learning activities based in the Carden Method reinforce both social lessons and educational development.

Pumpkin-decorating contest comes to CUSD

Carpinteria Unified School District will hold a pumpkin-decorating contest Oct. 5 to 21. Pumpkins may be carved or decorated, and CUSD will be distributing 20 to 30 free pumpkins each week at random during “Grab & Go” meal pick up locations (Canalino, Aliso, CMS, CHS and Monte Vista Park).

Students and families will be able to vote on their favorite entries. Pictures of decorated pumpkins must be submitted by midnight, on Wednesday, Oct. 21, by email to Michelle.Hernandez@cusd.net. Any pumpkin may be used. Include the pumpkin decorator’s name and phone number in the email.

Photos of the decorated pumpkins will be posted on the Food Service website (CUSDfoodservice.net) on Thursday, Oct. 22 and the community is invited to vote on their favorite goulish gourd.

Beach neighborhood opposition

We have a home in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development for a large hotel to be built on the existing train station parking lot. This “railroad hotel” plan is intrusive. It will affect our quality of life. And it will affect our very safety.

We already live in a no-way-out neighborhood. We live in a tsunami zone—the city has posted signs all around us. We face sea level rise. And yet three City Councilmen would consider exacerbating traffic and parking issues all around us—and for what? Or should I ask—for whom?

Just shy of 1,000 people have already personally mailed the City Council, signed a petition, and posted on social media their abhorrence for this plan. Less than 50 people have spoken out in favor of this project. This project should either be rejected outright at the earliest possible opportunity, or be put on hold until the citizens can vote on a city initiative. In the meantime, hundreds of Carpinterians are feeling anxious, upset, unsettled and even angry as this proposal persists. The entire Downtown Beach Neighborhood is up in arms.

It is the responsibility of each member of the City Council to act in the best interests of the citizens of Carpinteria—to listen and to protect us. Al Clark and Fred Shaw get it.

POTUS lacks empathy

Responding to David Rosso’s letter from last week, the greatest divider this country has ever seen is the current president. Let’s keep that in mind. Nineteen years ago, the Veterans administration was a scandal. Three administrations talked about fixing it. Now our veterans give the VA a 91 percent approval rating. If that is uncaring give me more.

He just finished negotiating with Big Pharma. The U.S. now has “Favored Nation Status.” Your name-brand drug prices will come down. He just signed an executive order protecting those with pre-existing conditions. If that is heartless, give me more of it.

Historical Black Colleges—President Trump has funded them at the highest level ever for the next 10 years. If that is racist, give me more.

In 1995, congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act that “requires” our embassy to be located in Jerusalem. After 35 years, we kept our word. All experts still say it cannot be done. This year with the peace agreements signed between Israel and United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel and Bahrain, I see peace coming.

President Trump has been nominated for two Nobel Peace prizes. Why don’t you find out what they are for? And he does all of this for free. He gives his salary to charity or back to government. If this is a grifter, oh please send me more like him. I could go on, but I’m limited to 300 words.

Ask the Candidates The Race for Carpinteria City Council

This year’s election cycle includes a hotly contested race for Carpinteria’s two open seats on City Council.

Citizens of the World’s Safest Beach will have a chance to choose two councilmembers from a pool of three qualified candidates. Incumbent Mayor Wade Nomura competes for his third term, with eight years of Council service under his belt, and the desire to serve another four.

Candidate and Carpinteria-native Natalia Alarcon hopes her experience in community service and back-

ground as a bilingual Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist will help her win a seat on the Council to “amplify the voices of our underrepresented community members.” And, retired professor and media presenter Mark McIntire has thrown his hat in the ring with the slogan, “Make Carpinteria better than ever.”

This week’s question: Carpinteria is well-known as a charming beach community, however, as the population rises and housing prices increase, the city faces questions regarding commercial and residential development. What is your position on the development of more residential units? Please specifically address affordable, low- and middle-income housing.

Affordable housing is not only essential for the vitality of our community, it is mandated by State RHNA (Regional Housing Needs Allocation). I have been active in protecting our housing market including: Serving on the city’s Neighborhood Design Guidelines Committee (1998-2004); Passing the conversion of apartments to a new form of condominium instead of short-term rentals.

Protecting the community’s interests by signing/ sending a letter to the State Legislature ensuring mobile home rent stabilization. Participating in a review process for live/work developments at the Palm Lofts and Lavender Court which serve as a sound model for future planning. In these pandemic times, it becomes a great model for the future as working from home will become the normal for many more people.

I’ve spoken at national housing summits. I feel many affordable housing initiatives are missing the point, as they can limit the property appreciation opportunity.

With subsidized government grants or corporations (employers) assisting with down-payments, paid back when units are sold, this inequity can be avoided.

Working on new guidelines for Accessory Dwelling Units. Previously, some successful agricultural growers purchased housing for staff. This is another area to be encouraged in order to retain the Carpinteria Valley workforce and economy.

As mayor, I re-established a coordinated design review process, including the ARB, Planning Commission and City Council, to comment on conceptual design projects prior to the official review process, to evaluate and recommend potential new developments for conformity, protecting Carpinteria’s small town charm.

Carpinteria has its challenges being only 2.5 square miles in size and as part of the planning committee, we have to focus on sensible growth; one that evaluates parking, traffic, schools, tourism, mansionization of the Beach Neighborhood, protecting our natural resources, impacts on our infrastructure and sea level rise, to come up with a long term plan for development.

In recent years, we have seen a trend in Carpinteria of families relocating elsewhere due to the rising cost of living. Our community is changing and I believe through creative strategies we can develop balanced solutions that will increase affordable housing options and minimize overcrowding. When discussing housing options, we need to look at two categories: Workforce housing, indicative of middle-income households who wouldn’t qualify for affordable housing based on their income; and Affordable housing options defined by low income households who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to live in the community.

Can Carpinteria develop new housing projects? The amount of unused land to develop is slim. So, what can Carpinteria do? I believe that by encouraging mixeduse projects in our downtown corridor we can create a balanced mix of office, commercial and residential uses. The close proximity to downtown and local schools would limit the amount of commuting in our community.

Additionally, Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) would provide an increase in housing supply at no additional land costs. ADUs are viable options for many community residents such as; seniors, extended family members and college students. Our city currently offers Workforce Housing programs. I intend to explore how we might expand these programs to include a higher percentage of qualified candidates. The city can work with the county property to possibly develop and annex contiguous unincorporated land.

Creating housing solutions is essential. The city can partner with People’s Self-Help Housing and Habitat for Humanity to increase our housing stock. I want to increase the quality of life for many of our families living in overcrowded households. I want to create a community where our teachers live where they teach.

Carpinteria candidates hold online Zoom forums

Local TV producer Larry Nimmer and the Alcazar Theatre will co-host this year’s Carpinteria Candidates Virtual Forums with the Carpinteria Schoolboard Forum on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m., and the Carpinteria City Council Candidates Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. Both forums will be streamed live on the Alcazar’s Facebook page. They will also be available to view on Larry Nimmer’s YouTube Channel.

Community members may submit questions ahead of time for each of the forums to larry@nimmer.net, and there will also be a link on the Alcazar Theatre Facebook page to submit questions live with an opportunity to join the Zoom session to question the candidates directly.

Nimmer will moderate the virtual forums. Candidates will participate via Zoom and will have a predetermined amount of time to answer each question.

Competitive natural market forces themselves will determine the accommodation of increased populations, housing prices and commercial development. Hence, “Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door” is the popular economic truism. The duty of City Council members is to ask the citizens first if they even want any further development with a specific program or proposal and not to plunge into the housing development market with taxpayer’s money.

The council has not always asked citizens-at-large by survey of the entire population when they plan to use public resources to satisfy the urges of private interests and myopic groups. Cutting edge technology, if implemented, would allow City Council to take surveys of public opinion on programs that will affect our community for decades to come.

This is another reason for a 5G technology upgrade for all Carpinterians regardless of identity by cultural divisions. Once elected, I will brush aside divisive calls to pit one cultural group ahead of another. This is another way my position on City Council will “make Carpinteria better than ever.”

Next week’s question:

In the next two years, City Council will be reviewing a proposal for development of an inn on Linden Avenue at the Amtrak Station parking lot. The city stands to raise significant revenues through the lease and bed tax collected from an inn, but some concerns have been raised about loss of open space, parking congestion and the role of city government in commercial enterprise. What actions and opinions do you intend to take regarding developing an inn in that location?

Two takes on a difficult time

CAUSE and CUSD balance competing priorities

BY CHRISTIAN BEAMISH After the article titled “Principal addresses reopening concerns and misinformation” (CVN, Vol. 27, No. 1) was published, Canalino Elementary School teacher Krista Munizich, Carpinteria High School teacher and Canalino parent Sarah Rochlitzer and CAUSE Union president, Carpinteria Middle School teacher and Canalino parent Jay Hotchner wanted to speak with CVN to present their dissatisfaction with Carpinteria Unified School District administrators over their handling of reopening plans.

“We had a successful initial conversation with the district, where, within two or three days of closing, we met at the district office (and) we hammered-out an agreement that looked and felt like we were going to be working collaboratively through the pandemic,” Hotchner said in a Zoom meeting with Munizich, Rochlitzer and Christian Beamish, CVN editor. “…It became clear shortly after that agreement when it was time to begin talking about what next year would look like… the district went into a real ‘hide the ball’ mode in regard to what resources it had to devote to the effort…” Hotchner continued.

Beamish (the author of this piece) asked, “Did you bring up these concerns with the administration?”

“We communicated that in 18 different ways throughout the summer,” Hotchner replied, “verbally informally, verbally formally, statements to the school board, emails to the entire educational community, advisories sent out to the Coastal View…”

Rochlitzer added, “…all the decisions that were being made by the leadership team—which consisted of the administrators at the school and then some district administrators—was an extremely small group of people making all the important decisions for the district.” She continued, “And their communication, their outreach to the stakeholders, consisted of poorly constructed Google forms that you would have to—the percentage of people,

the demographic that responds to those Google forms, is extremely limited.”

Rochlitzer asserted that “the lower socio-economic, Spanish-speaking families are not the demographic that responds to those digital surveys. And so, they’re getting this feedback from an extremely small group of people.”

Hotchner conceded, “…at the end of the day, (the district) leadership team needs to be the group that makes the decisions. The union has never contested who has the authority to make this decision.”

His criticism is that the district “…had not done the difficult work of informing themselves broadly on either the experiences of staff, the experiences of parents, (or) the wisdom of health experts.”

Munizich said, “We continuously asked for a taskforce.” An email she sent to fellow CUSD staff members resulted in “almost 50 teachers or staff members immediately responding, asking ‘yes, we need a taskforce.’” Munizich added, “…there’s this mentality of ‘if we say it, then it’s true.’ And it keeps happening, and that’s why when your article came out last week, teachers were floored at Canalino.”

When asked about teacher sentiments regarding reopening, Hotchner said, “Our survey results told us that somewhere around 50 percent of the employees in the district are uncomfortable returning…” Although the district is following the protocols set forth by local and state public health agencies, Hotchner stated: “This falls under the old adage that most of us learned, often the hard way, before we became adults, that just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should, OK? ...it wasn’t a green light for ‘once those numbers (of Covid-19 cases) get there, you can go back to school.’ It was ‘once those numbers get there, your local authorities can decide to send kids back to school.’”

At the Aug. 11 meeting of the CUSD school board, 40 members of the public voiced their opinions on school reopening, with 22 community members opposed, and 18 in favor of reopening in the hybrid model. The board voted 4 to 1, Rogelio Delgado dissenting, in favor or the hybrid reopening plan.

CVN sent an email to Canalino Elementary School Principal Jaime Persoon asking how she has communicated with parents and staff, and low-income, Spanish-speaking families in particular.

She responded: “Canalino/Carpinteria Family School principal surveyed parents multiple times from April to July 2020. The comments submitted in those

At the Aug. 11 meeting of the CUSD school board, 40 members of the public voiced their opinions on school reopening, with 22 community members opposed, and 18 in favor of reopening in the hybrid model. surveys were submitted in both English and Spanish. In addition, we held two parent Zoom forums to share concerns, ideas and suggestions. One meeting was held in English and the other in Spanish.

“Bilingual teacher and community leader Sonia Aguila volunteered to call Spanish speaking parents from multiple classrooms to get their feedback in the event they were unable to respond to surveys or join the Zoom meetings. Given that 95 percent of our student body intends to return to an in-person model, my sense is that parents are comfortable and supportive with the reopening plans in a hybrid model.

“In addition, I respond to dozens of emails and phone calls per day, and our fabulous bilingual office staff does the same. They also meet with Spanish speaking parents outside the front office, socially distanced, to support them with enrollment, Aeries access, supplies needs, or general questions and concerns. This is happening daily.”

To reiterate her efforts to include families and staff in the formation of reopening plans, Persoon provided CVN with 26 emails and notices she had sent since last spring. In one of the emails, Persoon stated, “I am not interested in talk television or social media discussions around the issue. These are the guiding principles: Students most benefit from being in school in person; Students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged (live in poverty) are disproportionately affected by not having any in-person instruction.

In fact, for many of these students, not having in-person instruction is disastrous, in the short and long term. Not having in-person check-in with school staff in a small number of cases is dan-

gerous in abuse and neglect situations.”

Regarding communication with staff, Persoon stated that she sent regular Sunday updates, and teachers/staff completed a number of surveys of their own: “Teachers/staff were updated much more than once weekly throughout this crisis, and gave their feedback; Teachers/ staff were invited to attend weekly voluntary school reopening committees at every site.” Persoon also said that “staff received all of the documents as soon as I had them. ...SBPHD guidelines, updates, the draft CUSD reopening plan for their feedback and input, the Canalino/CFS Hybrid Model Plan draft for feedback and input, etc.”

Persoon added, “The vast majority of parents intend to send their students back to school in a hybrid model. Currently, about 5 percent of our campus student population has opted for independent learning. We have been continuously evolving the independent study model based on those parents and their feedback.”

For families interested in remote learning—participation in which will not prevent students from returning to special programs like Dual Language Immersion once the pandemic has largely subsided—Persoon set up two informational Zoom meeting times, with Spanish translation available (call Canalino school for information), on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m., and Monday, Oct. 12. at 5:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7, CUSD received notification from California Public Health Department that the district’s elementary waiver application has been approved.

CUSD will reopen Aliso, Summerland, Canalino and Carpinteria Family School in a hybrid model on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

CUSD receives waiver approval

Carpinteria Unified School District Superintendent Diana Rigby announced Wednesday, Oct. 7, that the California Public Health Department approved the CUSD elementary waiver application. “We are permitted to reopen Aliso, Summerland, Canalino and Carpinteria Family School in a hybrid model on Tuesday, October 13,” Rigby wrote.

“All schools will implement the safety protocols outlined in the Aug. 11 Board Adopted Reopening Plan which is posted on our website, cusd.net in English and Spanish for your review,” the superintendent added.

“The District Office, elementary principals, and elementary staff have been working tirelessly since last June to plan a safe reopening for our school community,” Rigby continued. “Both Principals Persoon and Fox have developed specific site protocols to implement the Board Adopted Reopening Plan.

Reopening dates for Carpinteria Middle School and Carpinteria High School

will be discussed and approved at the Oct. 13 school board meeting. Small cohorts of CMS and CHS students will receive in person instruction beginning in October, and CHS Athletics began in-person conditioning this week.

Superintendent Rigby ended her announcement by writing, “We appreciate your partnership and support during these most challenging times, and please stay safe and healthy.”

Ask the Candidates

The Race for Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees (Week 2 of 3) In this year’s election for Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees, incumbent Rogelio Delgado faces four challengers— Jaime Diamond, Aaron Smith, Jeff Weinbender and Craig Cook—in a race for two seats on the school board. In this week’s second installation of the three-part Q & A series, we learn what positions the candidates would take regarding education during the pandemic, including questions of equity and reopening schools for in-person learning.

This week’s question: The Covid-19 pandemic has presented significant challenges to the Carpinteria Unified School District School Board, many of which will continue to be debated and decided upon during the next term. Two of the biggest challenges have been 1) how to offer an equitable education across distance and hybrid learning models; and 2) when should schools reopen and how will student and staff safety be ensured. Please respond stating what you would advocate for on both points.

Rogelio Delgado Our community is divided by the pandemic. Teachers and a great part of our community see distance education as the best solution.

Teachers have adjusted students to Zoom education. Teachers worry about their own safety and their own kids and students when they return to school. They now have the experience and proper school supplies to continue successful distance teaching. When students return to every school site, the problem is that the teachers see no safety nor health and see the school district as unprepared. Again, CUSD and union leadership have to work together.

Carpinteria is also divided on hybrid learning models. Teachers and a great part of the community affirm that CUSD is not ready and that it represents a safety and health hazard. There is a fear factor when elementary schools open as well as the other school sites. How can 148 employees provide safety for 900 children?

Masks, social distance, breaks, lunch breaks, restrooms in use,

making sure they wash their hands with soap and water for 20-30 seconds, disinfecting, cleaning desks, objects touched? Rules can be implemented and have better control of the pandemic if everyone cooperates 100 percent to make sure regulations are followed. The union and CUSD should work together.

There is no way of ensuring that students’ safety and health will be ensured when every school site reopens. Only some cases show that children cannot infect adults, but adults can infect children.

Why are only kids in the third grade and above required to wear a mask? Why did a handshake among adults almost disappear? It is a precaution/fear. CUSD and union leadership have to be united to control the pandemic. Soon there will be 2,000 students in school sites and the district needs the necessary equipment and to enforce the rules in order to have safety and health for everyone.

Jaime Diamond Our teachers and district have done an amazing job with remote learning. The students who did well before will most likely continue to do well. The ones who struggled will struggle even more without their normal school supports available. Many special education students are not getting services they need in this format. Although the district has given out laptops and hotspots, there are many students who still grapple with bad internet connections, no adult support or supervision at home (even kindergarteners).

We need to get our students back in class safely. I fully support the hybrid model. Those who need to or can choose to safely stay home have that choice, however we need more options for these students. Independent study via edmentum is not satisfactory. We need our kids to still be part of their class, which is why I submitted a concurrent classroom model proposal to the district last week, after

sharing with stakeholders at each K-5 school site.

Santa Barbara County is looking to reopen K-12 mid-October.

Sixth through 12th grades will have the same A/B cohort model as elementary. I have heard parents say they would prefer if we wait until after winter break for continuity, even more have said their typically happy child is showing signs of depression and anxiety from isolation—suicide and self-harm are at an all-time high nation-wide.

Our kids’ mental/emotional health have suffered during these last six months and must be considered in this discussion. I have seen the PPE on-hand inventory list and it is robust. Staff training is happening at elementary, and I believe we need to give our kids more credit for their ability to adapt. We need a new parent survey 6-12, and need to go so far as to call each family who does not respond.

Jeff Weinbender 1) The issue of an equitable education is often magnified in distance learning. When remote and hybrid are done well, all can be served. When not, the education gap widens. Successful remote learning requires intentional care to the individual student. There are some excellent software pieces that can aide a classroom teacher to bridge that gap and better meet the individual student, (like IXL).

This does not supplant the teacher, rather the teacher uses these tools to meet and monitor each student’s needs, challenges and successes.

2) Student, family and community safety must always come first.

Our students do best in the classroom environment. More so than placing all of our focus on merely “when schools should reopen,” we should also be asking the question, “how schools should reopen.”

Looking at practices in place throughout the country can give us some good guidance on what to do and what not to do. Clearly, as the infection and hospital rates drop, we will be able to bring our students back. A phased approach, focusing on students with the greatest needs and challenges first, should be used in a situation where the virus is gradually decreasing.

Aaron Smith It is quite clear that both the online only and hybrid learning models create many challenges for our students and teachers. Striving for equity in education is nothing new for our district. The goal is to make sure that any social and economic obstacles that exist do not keep our students from achieving their full educational potential.

With the pandemic closing our schools for in-person learning, every school district has had to scramble to find ways to continue educating their students. Our district worked hard to secure hot spots and Chromebooks for any child in need. However, lack of tools is just one obstacle families face with distance learning. Connecting with students who are not attending class or turning in assignments has been a challenge that our district’s counselors have met head-on.

As we move into the hybrid model, first for grades TK-5 and then for the rest of our students, everyone will need to work together

to close the growing achievement gap and bring more equity to our schools. This includes teachers, administrators, school board members and students.

I feel there are ways to improve the current hybrid model plan.

Our intent with this model must be to continuously modify and adopt new strategies that work. We need to make sure that students are engaged in learning on the days they are not on campus. We need to instill a growth mindset in our district. Our teachers must be supported in their efforts to adapt and improve; their enthusiasm and dedication trickles down to the students. I know many teachers with this mindset, and I understand the importance of supporting and nurturing these special teachers. At every level of CUSD, there must be a commitment to support student learning regardless of socioeconomic status.

Craig Cook 1) What does it mean to say that schools are inequitable? What it means is this: students have vastly different experiences in our public schools—these vastly different experiences lead to vastly different outcomes. Tragically, many of the lowest performing schools serve students who are low income and/or students of color. While a variety of outcomes is to be expected, it is unacceptable that some students have access to what is considered to be a high-quality education while others don’t.

As an educator I understand the needs of both teachers and students. As an Ethnic Studies scholar, I am uniquely qualified in understanding the equity issues that students and schools face. We must create and foster a more equitable education in our district— especially hybrid/online—education. The good news is that I will work hard to bridge the opportunity and achievement gaps that exist. The broader world of education is increasingly focused on equity and we must apply that to CUSD.

2) Schools are an essential part of our community as they provide safe, supportive learning environments, employ teachers and other staff, and enable parents, guardians and caregivers to go to work.

Schools also provide vital services that help to reduce health disparities—such as school meal programs and physical and mental health services. As such, we should make every effort to support the reopening of schools safely for in-person learning if appropriate precautions are taken.

One strategy is to use cohorting. This allows students to stay together throughout the school day to minimize exposure for others.

Those within a cohort would only have physical proximity with others in that cohort. This practice may help prevent the spread of Covid-19 and will decrease opportunities for exposure to or transmission. I am very pleased that CUSD is taking this approach as they begin the process of reopening our schools.

Next week’s question: School board members have the opportunity to influence and decide funding allocations for school programs including physical education, special education, gifted programs, dual language programs, English language learning programs, afterschool enrichment programs, enhanced nutrition programs, garden programs, field trips, mental health and counseling programs, drug prevention programs, college readiness programs, and more. Getting to know the Surfliner Inn proposal

While the term “developers” often comes with connotations of outside interests, the four families behind the controversial boutique hotel proposal for the Linden Avenue Amtrak Station, say that applying that perception to them is unfair. Andy Norris, Whitt Hollis, Mathew and Jim Taylor, and Jack and Jeff Theimer, the four Santa Barbara County families that have joined together as the 499 Linden Managers LLC, say their beach hotel, The Surfliner Inn, will respect and contribute to Carpinteria’s community values, small town charm and historic character. Moreover, the four families intend to continue to own and manage the hotel long after its completion.

“This is going to look and feel like Carpinteria,” said Jeff Theimer, who lives in Carpinteria with his family. “You’re going to be able to walk in in board shorts and the bar and café will be open to the public.” The two-story hotel will have a beach/farmhouse design of board and batten siding to fit in with the Beach Neighborhood’s architectural character.

The proposed Surfliner Inn—named after the Pacific Surfliner train that connects California’s Southern Coast—will have 40 rooms. For comparison, the Carpinteria Best Western has 144 rooms. Theimer noted that the Surfliner would take up less than half of the existing parking lot and would be roughly as tall as the two-story apartment building that sits across the street from the property on 5th Street.

Room rates will be under $500—proposed in the $200 to $300 range per night—and averaging a 75 percent occupancy. Comparable area boutique hotels are Santa Barbara’s Wayfarer and Hotel Indigo, both located near Santa Barbara’s train station and in walking distance to the beach and downtown area.

“It’s a three-star hotel, not a five-star hotel,” said Theimer. “Camping at the beach and short-term rentals are awesome and this is a different product that will offer something different. Maybe my parents-in-law are older and don’t want

Whitt Hollis noted that as opposed to other Carpinteria hotels where you have to park and drive down to the beach, “we anticipate our guests parking at the hotel and walking and biking for their stay.”

The Surfliner proposal includes a parking lot with 83 spots (31 more than the current parking lot) that will be completed before construction begins on the hotel. Some of this additional parking will come from converting the city-owned property between The Spot and the fencing along the train tracks. This area, often called the “open space corridor,” will only be partially impacted by the new parking, which will pave a stretch of the grassy area closest to Linden Avenue. At least 50 percent of the open corridor will remain the same, said Theimer and Hollis, adding that there are plans to create a trail from Linden Avenue that traverses the corridor.

the developers, was earmarked by the city for possible public parking well before the hotel project was proposed.

The Surfliner would employ a staff of roughly 20 people with an additional 10 to 20 jobs created by the café and bar which will be leased to a local purveyor. The onsite manager would live at the hotel.

Built on city-owned property, the Surfliner’s lease would be between the entity (499 Linden Managers LLC) and the city.

For the developers to change or trade ownership of the hotel, the city would have to approve the transfer.

“It’s not getting flipped or linked to a Hyatt or anything like that,” said Theimer. “We’re not out here to get a quick buck. We live here in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara—we’re not L.A. flippers. We believe in the project and we want to do this.”

“We’re just four local families that are trying to respect that this used to be the train station and the hotel is patterned after that,” added Hollis. “We’re trying to enhance this city. The city will get revenue plus 40 to 50 people going up and down Linden shopping and eating. And the city is in a unique position to have input on what this project looks like. We’re canvassing Linden businesses, reaching out to City Council—we want people to understand what the project is.”

If the Surfliner Inn proposal makes its way through the Architectural Review Board, Planning Commission and City Council approvals without major road bumps, construction could begin in late 2022.

Girls Inc. virtual fundraiser “Blooms” success

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria hosted its eighth annual “An Evening in Bloom” a bit differently this year—but the community showed up once again to support the nonprofit’s largest annual fundraiser.

In place of the usual, elegant affair held at the Girls Inc. campus, Bloom kicked off Aug. 24 with a virtual “Challenge for Change” competition in which local teams competed to raise money.

The month-long challenge ended with a virtual wrap party on Friday, Sept. 25, held via Zoom. Roughly 55 community members attended the virtual event, which featured a live auction, impact stories by members, and more.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria Trustee Katie Convoy and local members Dulce (eighth grade) and Karla (fifth grade) hosted the event from Westerlay Orchids. Longtime supporters and advocates of the organization, Win Van Wingerden and Ed Van Wingerden, served as the auctioneers.

The organization had set a “bold” goal of $250,000 for the event, and revealed the big winner of its Challenge for Change competition: CARP Growers, which raised a total of $87,000 for Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

The wrap party also included a tribute to Mary Crowley, a longtime Girls Inc. of Carpinteria supporter and past board member who was dedicated to giving back to the Carpinteria community.

Crowley passed away in January 2020 following a long battle with cancer. The event included a special recognition video of Crowley which featured heartwarming words from her family, friends and community members, and highlighted

“You could just see the fire and dedication in her eyes whenever Girls Inc. came up,” said Clyde Freeman, a past board president and a friend of Crowley.

“Looking at Girls Inc. today, I see Mary everywhere. She was always saying ‘strong, smart and bold’—and that was Mary too,” added Diane Freeman, also Mary’s friend.

“Mary left an inspirational legacy that enables us to continue our work delivering life-changing programs to local girls

and teens. She dedicated years of service as a trustee and was heavily involved in our Taste of Carpinteria event,” said Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

Thus far, the event has raised $231,000, and Girls Inc. hopes to continue moving toward its goal with additional donations.

The funds will help ensure that Girls Inc. of Carpinteria is able to continue providing full day out of school programming to those who need it most.

“We are committed to offering out-of-

school care for families in the fall to help with distance learning and all the funds raised from Bloom will support our continued efforts. We hope to inspire others to join in and invest in our community’s future leaders,” Collins added.

As the only licensed program offering support to school-aged children in Carpinteria amid the pandemic, the nonprofit hopes to inch closer to their $250,000 goal to ensure that no child is turned away.

“Printmakers” on display at arts center

The “Art of the Printmakers” exhibit has opened at the Carpinteria Arts Center in the Charles Lo Bue Gallery. The current exhibition features original prints made using hand and press printing techniques such as etching, drypoint, monoprint, woodblock, collagraph, linocut, clay, lithography, screen printing, transfer and photopolymer plates.

The exhibit runs until Nov. 16, and shows pieces from established artists in the Santa Barbara Printmakers, as well as upcoming artists. The show was juried by Garret Speirs and Bay Hallowell. Speirs commented, “The Art of the Printmakers” exhibit is a grand show demonstrating the broad and experimental nature of printmaking.” All the pieces are available to view and purchase online at carpinteriaartscenter.org, along with newly featured handmade jewelry. The community can also vote on favorite pieces in the people’s choice voting on the arts center’s website.

Vin Bennett takes first place in Avofest Guamamole

An easy-to-follow recipe makes for a classic guacamole with a flavor twist of bacon. Considering the collective avocado experience in Carpinteria, the winning guac would have to break new ground, and it seems Ms. Bennett has done just that.

Trader Joe’s One-Stop Shop Guac RECIPE BY VIN BENNETT

Ingredients:

2 slices of bacon (crisp and crumbled) 3 medium-size ripe avocados 2 tablespoons red onion (thinly sliced and diced) 2 cloves garlic (microplaned/grated) 2 tablespoons Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel 2 tablespoons Trader Joe’s Yuzu Hot Sauce 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice

Directions:

Cook bacon slices. Dry on paper towel and crumble. Combine all ingredients and mash and stir until well incorporated.

Adjust to taste!

Peruano Beans

CHEF RANDY RANDY GRAHAM Peruano beans originated in the Andes Mountains in Peru. You may know them as canary, mayocoba or Mexican yellow beans. The beans are yellowish in color and once cooked, turn a light tan. When eaten, they have a soft buttery texture.

This is a very flavorful recipe featuring chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. The dish has a nice smoky flavor and a medium heat level. If you can’t tolerate heat, but want flavor, start with one individual chipotle (no sauce) and move up from there.

Ingredients:

1 cup dry Peruano beans 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 large white onion (chopped) 3 garlic cloves (minced) 2 carrots (rinsed, sliced thin) 1 red bell pepper (diced 1 teaspoon smoked paprika powder 1 teaspoon cumin powder 2 chipotle chiles in adobo sauce (seeds removed, chopped) 2 teaspoons adobo sauce

2 cups vegetable stock ½ cup water 3 tablespoons tomato paste 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon corn starch (for thickening) 1 tablespoon water Salt and pepper to taste Fresh cilantro and avocado (for garnish) Lime wedges (brought to the table as a condiment)

Directions:

Prepare the dry beans by soaking them overnight in a covered pot of cool water.

Drain and rinse. Transfer the drained beans to a soup pot and cover with a generous amount of water. Bring the beans to a boil and then reduce to a gentle simmer—cook for about 45 to 50 minutes.

Rinse cooked beans and set aside.

stir for three minutes to slightly thicken the beans. Add salt and pepper to taste and serve hot from the pot!

Tip: Cook the dry beans the day before to save prep time on the day that you make this recipe.

Heat oil in a large soup pot over medium heat. Sauté onion and garlic for about four minutes or until translucent. Add carrots and bell pepper and continue to sauté for a couple of minutes more. Mix in paprika, cumin, chopped chipotle peppers and adobo sauce. Add vegetable stock, water, tomato paste, vinegar and honey. Stir to combine.

brewLAB lets its beer do the talking

MADE IN CARPINTERIA B R E N D A TA N In six years, Carpinteria’s beloved brewer-owned and run brewLAB has stuck with a plan of slow, organic growth built from the ground up. The self-proclaimed shoestring startup hardly had any starting capital. With the help of Peter Goldammer, one of brewLAB’s founders and a skilled craftsman and designer, they built most of the tasting room from salvaged/refinished materials, including the lights, the bar, the walk-in cooler and the front patio. “Building goes much slower at this pace, but it kept our start-up costs down and felt good to be doing the work ourselves in an organic fashion,” said Steve Jarmie, one of brewLAB’s founders.

“It has taken a lot of patience and a lot of sweat equity, but we’ve learned so much from the experience.” BrewLAB’s third co-founder is Robert Peed.

“Back in 2008, one of Rob’s family members gave him a home brewing kit and we brewed our first batch of beer in his mom’s kitchen,” Jarmie recalled. “Even though it was the most basic (almost cheating) way to brew beer, we were both so intrigued with the process and with more research decided we wanted to do it the real way, which snowballed into this huge attraction.” Peed later attended UCSB, and was completing a permaculture internship at Orella Ranch in Gaviota when he met and formed a friendship with Goldammer over their mutual interest in brewing. In 2012, Goldammer was renting half a unit in the same complex where brewLAB currently resides for his carpentry work. When his partner decided to back out, the Goldammer, Peed and Jarmie took the opportunity to take over the space and started planning brewLAB. The brewery opened with zero advertising in September 2014 and has relied heavily on just word of mouth even to this day.

Since opening in 2014, Peed has left to pursue other projects. In 2018, a customer, community member and company friend, Cliff Gordon joined the team, bringing to the team investment potential, a wide skill set, 20-plus years of brewing experience, and a background in chemical engineering.

Since opening, the team has maintained their brewer-run, brewer-owned status with a single employee, David Mendoza. Jarmie commented, “In the brewing industry the brewers are usually hiding in the back making the beer, which means they don’t build relationships with the everyday customer. It has always been important for us to bridge that disconnect. For a brewer, the only thing more fun than making beer is sharing it with people and talking about it.”

Brewer-ownership gives the team the opportunity to create more-obscure projects than might otherwise be possible.

BrewLAB has the leeway and ability to be experimental and creative with their ingredients and techniques. Since they opened six years ago, brewLAB has been using a small 1.5 barrel/45-gallon brewing system that they designed and built themselves. “When you’re only brewing 45-gallons you can push the boundaries without the stress of making a huge batch of something you may be trying for the

first time. We use almost all organic grains and source as many local ingredients as possible such as honey, fruit, herbs and flowers.”

According to Jarmie, “brewing is a great blend of both science and art.

It has so much potential for different flavor profiles and the use of all kinds of unique ingredients and even different types of brewing techniques.” The brewLAB brewers realized that with so many avenues to explore, they could create new tastes for their customers.

“We are different because of our desire to continually create new things. Much like how an artist loves to show their art at an art show, a brewer loves it when they can provide people a new experience with drinking beer. It’s part of our goal to

always have an ever-evolving range and variety of styles.”

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, brewLAB had just invested in new equipment and were in the middle of a large expansion. They have been able to carry out the expansion projects throughout the past few months and have recently reopened their outdoor seating areas.

Fall is for planting: fruit trees, winter veggies and California natives CVN

EXPLORING THE VALLEY’S WILD AND CULTIVATED SPACES

ALENA STEEN As the weather cools and daylight disappears, it’s the perfect time of year to contemplate large structural changes in your landscape. Fall is the moment to assess the chaos of the growing season, “editing” your garden or landscape based on what you’ve learned the past few months.

Here at the community garden we begin the slow, steady process of cultivating our wild garden spaces: pruning back the spent flowering stalks of perennials and heavily mulching the garden to prepare the soil to accept and store as much of the winter rains as possible. Meanwhile, we celebrate the messy edges of our garden which provide food and shelter to migratory birds and butterflies, winter homes for essential insect pollinators such as native bumblebees and overwintering sphinx moths, and next spring’s seed bank. We do this by leaving many dead stalks standing through the winter (the preferred hibernation home for certain bee species), piling leaves in secret corners where lizards and frogs can burrow, and allowing annuals to die and set seed, sowing wonderful surprises for next spring.

Fall is the best time to plant fruit trees and perennial shrubs, vines and native plants who will benefit greatly from winter rains to establish before the next growing season. Although the passionflower, pictured at left, goes slightly dormant during the winter, the roots are busy establishing themselves underground for lots of flowers and fruit next year. Leafy greens such as this dino kale, pictured at right, are easy to grow from seed in your fall or winter garden, and provide lots of nutrition for the winter months.

Fall is the ideal time to plant fruit trees and hardy perennials in tune with our Mediterranean climate. Fall planting allows the winter rains to establish these larger plants, so that they will be much healthier and less water-dependent next spring and summer. Trees and large perennials should be planted after the first rain has fully saturated the soil. Always plant trees and non-native perennials with a few hearty scoops of homemade compost or store-bought worm compost.

Bare root fruit trees are the most affordable option for food forest-planting. An incredible diversity of organic varieties suited to our coastal “low chill” climate are available online from nurseries such as Bay Laurel Nursery, Planting Justice Nursery, and Peaceful Valley Farm and Garden Supply. Fruit trees and shrubs and vines such as blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are surprisingly easy to ship live in the mail, and should

I cannot encourage you enough to select a few California native plants for your garden space, no matter how small.

Inviting native plants into our urban and suburban landscapes is one of the most meaningful impacts we have on local biodiversity and ecosystem health. California natives are gorgeous, incredibly low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and of immense importance to local wildlife and pollinators who are an essential part of our food system and are in steep and frightening decline due to loss of habitat through overdevelopment and the use of agricultural poisons. Some of my favorite native plants which thrive in a variety of soil conditions without irrigation or any organic soil amendments are white, black, and purple sage, California fuchsia, goldenrod, and any of the penstemons.

These are all plants with gorgeous flowers highly desirable to pollinators which flower throughout the year for a non-stop bee buffet. Some of my preferred sources for native plants are the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s year-round plant sale, and the Santa Barbara Natives Nursery (sbnatives.com).

As the temperatures cool, leafy greens and root crops become the stars of the late fall and winter garden. In our mild winter it is so easy to grow food year-round.

Many fall veggies can be grown directly from seed planted in loose garden soil whose surface is kept damp until germination. Cool season crops that grow readily from seed include kale, lettuce,

With vegetables, it’s extra-important to make sure that your garden soil is fertile with the addition of homemade compost, well-aged horse or mule manure, or storebought worm compost.

The biggest pests in cool season food gardens are aphids who thrive in damper weather. These fluffy gray, white, or yellow blobs on leaf stems are easy to spray off with a sharp and direct jet of water, killing them instantly. As always in organic gardening, preventative health is the greatest remedy for plant and insect problems—make sure your soil is healthy and alive, and that you are not overwatering (especially in the winter, you should only water when the first two to three inches of topsoil are completely dry).

Growing some of your own food, as well as some for our neighbors the monarch butterflies, bluebirds, sphinx moths and carpenter bees, is such a simple and beautiful way to connect to seasonal rhythms. I hope that you can find a little time in this mixed up world to be a part of slow, steady and organic change.

CHS to resume equipment-free training and conditioning

Carpinteria High School will resume equipment-free training and conditioning for its athletic programs over the next two weeks.

Academically, the high school is still operating remotely; all K-12 Carpinteria Unified School District schools will be allowed—but not required—to return to in-person schooling once Santa Barbara County remains in the red tier for two weeks.

Between Oct. 5 and Oct. 16, high school boys and girls water polo, boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, cheerleading and football plan to resume training, according to Athletic Director Patrick Cooney.

A maximum of 14 students and two adults per sport are allowed to train at one time. In order to prevent as many interactions between people outside of different households, Cooney said that these groups are fixed, so “no students or coaches can change cohorts once we have started.”

“CHS plans to strictly adhere to the guidelines in an attempt to ensure the safety of the students and coaches involved,” Cooney said in an email. “It’s a ton of work but it’s clear that this small step is one that students, families and coaches want to take.”

Athletes are required to fill out a daily self-check Google form before 1 p.m. on the day of their respective activities and must fill out a Covid-19 pledge, according to the school’s website. The pledge asks students to confirm that they are “committed to keep myself and the Warrior community healthy and safe from the spread of Covid-19,” and the form asks students a number of questions, including whether they have been exposed to someone with Covid-19 or if they themselves have been diagnosed or are experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms.

Any athletes who do not fill in their form on time will not be allowed to participate in that day’s practice, according to the school’s website. No ridesharing is allowed and everyone must wear face coverings between the car and the athletic facilities; specific entrances to enter and leave practices are designated for each sport.

All sports will be required to do a “dry run” day before official training begins, where students practice screening, arriving and departing.

Spectators and volunteers will also not be allowed to stay on campus, Cooney said. “[A]ll will work together to ensure that progress can continue. Students will commit to taking measures that will essentially create a ‘bubble’ to protect them and their community,” said Cooney.

“It’s a huge collective effort. Other schools that have reopened in Phase 1 under these very limited conditions have reported that the work has been well worth it, as the positive energy and smiles from the students has proven priceless. We expect the same type of experience and value at CHS.” All sports are practicing on a modified

sports calendar for the 2020-21 school year, following the release of California Interscholastic Federation’s (CIF) guidelines for sports operations during the pandemic.

The CIF announced in July that it would be acting on modified schedules for the 2020-2021 school year. Instead of fall, winter and spring sports, ath-

The Otas were building a produce empire stretching from Los Angeles to the north of Santa Barbara County.

Notable agricultural properties were in Fillmore, El Capitan, and, of course, Carpinteria. This is the label attached to their produce boxes, “It Ota Be Good” brand, from K. Ota and Sons, circa 1935.

Japanese families in Carpinteria grew stronger in number and success after the war, particularly in the flower business.

The Ota story in Carpinteria is remarkable and best told by the family members themselves. Fortunately, the children of Kijuro and Hideko Ota, who arrived in the Valley in 1922, had their memoirs preserved. Attending Carpinteria schools, building an agricultural business that was flourishing prior to World War II, surviving through the internment experience, and returning to Carpinteria to rebuild their lives is all written down, or on tape.

Also, one of the Ota girls, Miyeko, married John Fukasawa. Fukasawa would settle in Carpinteria with her and raise a family. He would leave an indelible

mark on Carpinteria as mayor of the city, president of the Carpinteria Historical Society and Carpinterian of the Year in 1984. He led a very public and successful life in Carpinteria.

Starting in the 2020 November/December issue of the bimonthly Grapevine of the Carpinteria Historical Society, the Ota-Fukasawa memoirs will be published over several issues. Carpinterians who enjoy reading about Carpinteria Valley history won’t want to miss a single issue.

Did you know we have royals in Carpinteria? Well, at least it feels like that for human residents Robin and Jack Niederpruem, whose feline companion Roscoe is known around the block as the “prince of Dorrance Way.” Roscoe meanders around the Beach Neighborhood and has many friends that he visits on his jaunts. His favorite place is the Tomol Interpretive Park and the trail through the campgrounds where he sometimes accompanies Jack on his Sunday morning Carpinteria Beautiful trash route. After a busy day, Roscoe curls up in Robin’s lap for a snooze before leaving the house for his evening prowl in the neighborhood.

Manriquez completes Eagle Scout project

A Life Scout in Santa Barbara’s Scout Troop 1, Rowen Manriquez recently finished his Eagle Scout Service Project at Lake Cachuma. Manriquez has been a member of Troop 1 for six years, and is working on his Eagle Scout Rank. One requirement to become an Eagle Scout is to complete a service project that benefits the community.

Manriquez’ project consisted of planning, building and installing an information kiosk at the beginning of the Sweetwater Trail, located between the Lake Cachuma Campgrounds and the Bradbury Dam. Lake Cachuma Park Rangers approved his project proposal, and they will post maps and features of the trail on the kiosk with information on wildlife, hazards and notices about the surrounding area.

Carpinteria Valley Lumber and Carpinteria Valley Roofing donated most of the materials needed to complete the project. Manriquez then built the kiosk in his project coach’s backyard before disassembling and transporting the structure in sections to the Bradbury Dam for installation. The last section was delivered over Labor Day weekend, which were the hottest days of the year. The construction was further complicated by Covid-19 restrictions and extreme fire danger.

Supervising a crew of volunteers, Manriquez and his advisors installed the kiosk in 100-plus-degree heat over a five-day period with a ranger standing by with a water truck in case of accidental fire. The project was completed just five hours before the campground and park were closed because of extreme fire danger.

Rotarians hold voter-registration drive

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset has organized a community voter registration drive that began Tuesday, Oct. 6, and will run through Friday, Oct. 16 at the Seal Fountain on Linden Avenue in downtown Carpinteria. Rotary volunteers will be available to help people register to vote from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and during the day on Saturday. Morning Rotary is also helping in the voter registration effort.

“Carp Aid Diem” to help Carpinteria businesses impacted by the pandemic

Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning is holding a “Carp Aid Diem” fundraiser to help support local businesses struggling due to Covid-19. Gift cards and certificates to area businesses will be sold to raise lost revenue. Businesses are providing a 10- to 20-percent discount as an incentive, and a list of businesses will be posted online at CarpAidDiem.Shop, which will go live on Oct. 15.

This swearer was my great-grandmother Onnie Huseby Ruzicka, who was born in Norway in 1880. At the age of two, she set sail to America with her parents and Onnie, circa 1940. older brothers, where the family first lived in Blue Earth, Minnesota.

At some point in those early years her mother died, but by 1886 her father had moved to farm in North Dakota, and remarried. The union gave Onnie two older step-sisters, and soon after, a half-brother and sister.

In 1901, she married Emanuel Ruzicka, a Czech wheat-farmer on neighboring land, and together they raised 3 sons and a daughter on their own property. Though Onnie and Emanuel had success with their farm, life was not without its hardships.
