City adapts Independence Day plans to pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way that the city of Carpinteria can celebrate the Fourth of July this summer.

Reopening plans adopted by the state of California and county of Santa Barbara continue to guide the city of Carpinteria’s decisions related to resident and visitor safety during the ongoing pandemic.

Due to restrictions on gatherings, the city’s annual Independence Day Parade has been canceled. Slowing the spread of the virus remains a priority, and social distancing would be difficult to maintain at events such as parades and festivals, according to City Manager Dave Durflinger.

“We recognize that the parade is a cherished tradition for many, and its cancelation is yet another disappointment brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Durflinger. “But we hope that Carpinteria residents and visitors understand that these decisions are motivated by health officials’ expert advice on slowing the spread of the virus.”

The arrival of summer and the loosening of some travel restrictions will likely result in an influx of visitors to Carpinteria over the holiday weekend.

Another change to Carpinteria’s Fourth of July weekend celebrations relates to the Rods & Roses Car Show, which traditionally takes place preceding the city’s Independence Day Parade.

Organizers of the event have elected to hold a virtual car show on July 25 and are planning an in-person car show for December.

While public gatherings will be limited this Fourth of July holiday, the city reminds residents to keep safety in mind when planning their own celebrations.

Large private gatherings are not allowed due to pandemic risks, and fireworks are illegal in the city and county. Fireworks can cause personal injury and present fire risks that place the entire community in danger.

Avocado Festival plans virtual event

The beginning of summer means sunshine, beaches and the harvesting of avocados, which also means the California Avocado Festival is right around the corner.

On October 2-4, 2020, it will be the 34th year of the California Avocado Festival, a501c3 nonprofit that was created to help support other nonprofits and service organizations. However, this year, because of the pandemic and an indefinite public health order prohibiting large, in-person events, Avofest is going virtual.

With the virtual event, Avofest will feature unique viewing parties for live musical performances, access to Avocado Festival foods, links to commercial vendors and sponsors, virtual contests and pop-up stores with special, early access

to collectible merchandise, including three T-shirt designs and the 34th Annual California Avocado Festival poster.

In recent years, Avofest has helped raise local participating nonprofits and service organizations over $100,000 across the three-day festival.

“The magic and energy of this festival will continue despite the challenges of Covid-19,” stated the Avofest Board of Directors, “and we need the support of the community and our sponsors more than ever to meet this challenge and continue our promise to support other nonprofits and service organizations while providing a fun and entertaining festival, one that will surely be remembered for years to come.”

‘High Hopes’ campaign raises $5k for Foodbank

A cross-country fundraising partnership between Glass House Farms in Carpinteria and Staple Pigeon in New York City, raised over $5,000 for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County.

Food banks across the country have seen demands dramatically spike due to the economic impact of Covid-19, and private relief efforts have been critical to sustaining food distributions and battling food insecurity.

The campaign, called High Hopes and launched on 4/20/2020, was a fundraising collaboration through which proceeds from the sale of apparel and cannabis accessories designed

by Staple and Glass House benefited organizations working to help get food to those in need. In total, the campaign raised $10,000.

“The message of High Hopes is ‘we’re all in this together,’” said Graham Farrar, president of Glass House Group. “A great example of that was the realization that food banks in New York City are confronting the same crisis as

those in Santa Barbara. It’s up to us as individuals and companies to meet the challenges of the moment.”

Staple Pigeon, a well-known design company, joined the 48-hour benefit by designing hoodies, sweats, T-shirts and cannabis accessories for online sales of the limited-edition High Hopes capsule.

Foodbank of Santa Barbara County has doubled the volume of food it served last year to date due to elevated needs from economic hardships brought upon by the pandemic. This recent effort involving Glass House Farms comes on the heels of The Farmacy of Santa Barbara and CARP Growers donating the proceeds of its give-back program to the Foodbank in May. “Cannabis companies in Santa Barbara have been very active in helping the community,” said Dan Thomas, Foodbank chief development officer.

“We deeply appreciate the leadership in this new industry in identifying and responding to urgent needs in the county.”

Carpinteria’s City Council approved the draft 2020/2021 budget at its meeting on Monday, June 22. The proposed budget projects $19.4 million in total expenditures on revenues of approximately $16.35 million.

Next year’s total projected revenues are down 24 percent from the current fiscal year. Excluding the General Fund, the city’s 2020/21 revenues are projected to be down $4.4 million—or 39 percent— from 2019/20.

Revenue shortfalls are a result of the pandemic’s hit to tourism and commerce, reducing sales tax revenue by $276,000. Additionally, the city has seen a reduction in grant and insurance reimbursement revenues associated with the City Hall Remodel, Rincon Multi-Use Trail and Carpinteria Avenue Bridge.

The $19.4 million budgeted appropriations for all municipal funds in 2020/21 reflect a reduction in expenses by 7.1 percent (or $1.4 million) from estimated 2019/20 year-end expenditure projections.

Carpinteria’s reduced budget reflects the significant impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the city’s key revenue sources and related funds, in particular, the transient occupancy/hotel bed tax and sales tax revenues. The decreased tax revenue will contribute to closing the 2019/20 fiscal year with a projected $1.3 million operational deficit to the General Fund.

Though the severity and length of the

Carpinteria’s City Council discussed next steps to support furthering racial equity and justice within local law enforcement (contracted with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office), city policies and through engagement with stakeholders and community groups.

City staff identified three principal areas for improvement that the Council approved for further study: Ensuring that all law enforcement personnel receive appropriate racial sensitivity training; Endeavoring to have demographic diversity represented among law enforcement personnel in Carpinteria, including corresponding language fluency and; Increasing data sharing, analysis and transparency.

In response, Sheriff Bill Brown stated: “Myself and all of us in the Sheriff’s Office unequivocally denounce and condemn racism, police brutality and white supremacy.

There is no room for any of those in how we police or in this society. We strive to ensure that none of those are in our community… We in the Sheriff’s Office protect everyone in our community… Don’t let what happened in Minneapolis define or discredit our Sheriff’s Office.”

Brown also stated that all Sheriff’s Office deputies receive instruction in implicit bias and racial considerations during their initial training and are required to continue to take courses throughout their career.

Obituaries

John B. Clark, Jr. 4/15/1929 – 6/07/2020

On June 7, 2020, John B. Clark, Jr., 91, joined son, Lee, in fisherman heaven.

The family still grieves the loss of dear Lee to cancer two years ago.

John passed happily anticipating a family evening with wife of 62 years, Marjorie Chock Clark, daughter Lin, son-in-law Wilson and grand-daughter Maia Miller, in Kane`ohe, Hawaii. It was to be their first Sunday dinner together after Lin and Wilson’s two-week quarantine, home from extended Army Corps of Engineers duty in New York.

Unable to attend was John’s grandson and special buddy Liam Miller (Tacoma, Washington). Also surviving John are younger sister Marion and brother-inlaw Joseph Hurka, one nephew and two nieces, daughter-in-law Sharon (Thompson) Clark (Ventura, California), grandchildren Matthew, Jennifer, Michelle and Nicholas Clark (Monica), step-granddaughters Kaylene (partner Chan) and Janelle Jaworski, and four great-grandchildren.

John’s eventful life began in New York City, born to John, Sr. and Margaret (Coyne) Clark, in 1929, six months before the market crash. Surviving the Great Depression meant visits to bread and soup lines and kitchens of exclusive hotels for food scraps. It was the first of many impacting life events. At age four, he nearly died from lobar pneumonia.

Having received last rites, he rallied when a nurse opened a window to smoke, then passed out, drunk, allowing wind-blown snow to jolt little John back to life. At eight, he watched Hindenburg passengers waving and celebrating as the dirigible flew over Manhattan, minutes before bursting into flames and crashing, at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. A fight with a neighborhood boy nearly sent John, 12, off the roof of his five-story apartment building.

Soon after, the family moved first to Redondo Beach then Hawthorne, California. There, the slender 15-yearold Northrop Aircraft summer hire, squeezed into tail sections of Lockheed P-38 Lightening twin-engine warplanes to secure empennage bolts during production of the radical twin-hull interceptors that Army Air Corps pilots flew to victory in WWII. John graduated from Inglewood High School in 1947, having lettered in football and editing the yearbook. He studied Business Administration at the University Redlands, before joining the Korean War effort, enlisting in the Navy, in 1951.

John served aboard LST-802 Hamilton County en route to yeoman duties at Command Fleet Activities, Yokosuka, Japan and—at five-foot-six—a defensive lineman position for Armed Forces football. Used to design the Yokosuka Sea Hawk masthead and as a Pacific Stars & Stripes cartoonist, John’s graphic skills led him to Lithography training at Main Navy, Washington, D.C., but not before he learned the true cost of war,

unloading and processing our fallen servicemen at Yokosuka. Assignment to the Pentagon’s DoD Printing Office as a lithographer also enabled attendance at President Eisenhower’s Inauguration.

John was awarded the National Defense Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korea Service Medal for his service.

Honorably separated from active duty in 1955 and discharged from the Reserves in 1959, he then joined the Merchant Marines and worked concurrently toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Art, from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Struck by the “lightning bolt” as he glanced out a classroom window and spied Marge playing field hockey, they wed in 1957, and started a family.

Two years later, during a road trip to Oregon, a college friend lost control and their car plunged over a cliff. Upon regaining consciousness in the hospital, John was told that Marge was in serious condition and thankfully, Lee was fine.

When he asked after his daughter, staff immediately dispatched responders to return to the scene, where they found Lin, unhurt and still inside the blanket John had wrapped them in. Marge’s resulting paralysis forced the young couple to set aside their studies to focus on myriad new challenges.

In 1985, John retired to his home of 58 years in Summerland, California, from his position as a Santa Barbara Channel oil industry Crew Boat Captain—which, also, nearly proved deadly: during a shift change, Deck Hand Gerry Bellaart reached down and pulled John clear from being severed, seconds before a rogue wave thrust the boat against the pilings as he swung across, on a transfer rope, to the pier. Previous occupations included aeronautics firms lithographer, freelance artist/graphic illustrator and commercial fisherman—catching crab, and trolling salmon and albacore from his beloved 32-foot “Giaconda.”

Add to “survivor,” true Renaissance man: enlightened, educated, artistic and proficient in myriad areas, he could do and fix nearly anything. He will be remembered for his eclectic artwork (powerful seascape oils, intricately toned, stipple engraved intaglio prints, hundreds of humorous, ironic or dark pen-and-inks), much of which he generously gifted. He amused friends with arcane knowledge, captivating storytelling and amusing or profound recitals like “Clancy’s Wooden Wedding” and Kipling’s “If—“ delivered during trout fishing adventures and parties, usually enriched by two fingers of Scotch whiskey. John wrote numerous unpublished manuscripts recording unusual, idiosyncratic experiences. He foresaw the assassination of President Kennedy, the pandemic and current social conflicts.

Burdened by his perception of our country in decline and “man’s inhumanity to man,” he seemed to carry the weight of the world, but John’s laser-focused, unwavering dedication—first, foremost and always—was to caring for and fulfilling the needs of his “dear bride,” Marge. Both often said: “We owe the universe a death.” If so, John’s debt is paid … time he passed the baton and burden of the world’s ills to others to attend. His soul—and mind—finally can rest in peace.

John B. Clark, Jr., will be interred on Friday, June 26 at 2 p.m., at Nuuanu Memorial Park and Mortuary, 2233 Nuuanu Ave., Honolulu, HI 96817. Brother-inlaw Reverend James Chock will lead the service following Military Funeral Honors. Bette Humphries 5/11/1926 – 5/29/2020

Bette Humphries (Perlman, Spector), a long-time Carpinteria resident, passed away on May 29, 2020.

Bette was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts and raised her family in Canton, Ohio. In 1987, she moved to California and accepted a job with the Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel, managing and overseeing all the programming at the Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club Resort.

Bette and her husband John Humphries moved to Carpinteria in 1995.

They traveled the world, but also loved being active members of the community.

Bette taught swimming lessons at the Carpinteria Pool and they spent many hours enjoying the people, events and swimming at the Carpinteria ocean beach.

Her life-long work was centered around swimming. Over her 30-year career, she taught three decades of children and adults to swim, trained innumerable lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors, received awards for her programming with the Canton Special Olympics and swam in National Master’s Competitive events. She was inducted into the Stark County Hall of Fame for her contributions to the sport of swimming.

Bette leaves her daughters Marlene Beierle (Columbus, Ohio) and Sheri Perlman (Salinas, California), son-inlaw Andrew McKenna, grandchildren Jennifer Lucas (Ryan), Eben Beierle (Jamie), Edward McKenna (Hannah) and Aaron McKenna (Brooke), and seven great-grandchildren Maddox, Rowan, Quinn, Rhys, Riley, Clara and Isaac.

She also leaves family members Kris Humphries (Doug Reed and their son Sean) and the Spector families, Marty and Sue, Jeff and Marlen, Bob and EJ and their children and grandchildren.

We are grateful for the love, care and friendship of Janie Tupper and Shelise Lawhon. Family was the center of her life, and her presence will be missed.

George Chelini 6/18/1931 – 6/17/2020

George T. Chelini, Santa Barbara native and former director of the Santa Barbara Boys and Girls Clubs, passed away on June 17, one day short of his 89th birthday.

George grew up just off Milpas on Alphonse Street; he graduated in 1949 from Santa Barbara High School, where he played basketball and football; he served with the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War; and he attended Santa Barbara City College (where he was Student Body President) and UC Santa Barbara.

George started working for what was then the Santa Barbara Boys Club in 1956. He spent 37 years with the organization, eventually unifying all the Clubs in Santa Barbara County and becoming their overall Director. George mentored many well-loved staffers at the Clubs who became local legends in their own right, including Rich Medel, Sal Rodriguez, Pat Wargo and Donnie Yee. He also drummed up lots of donations, improved the Clubs’ facilities, and ran sports leagues—all while keeping in close touch with the children who came to the Clubs for entertainment, exercise and guidance. He was one of the first directors in the country to invite girls into the Clubs, leading to a renaming of the organization as the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara.

Even long after retiring in 1993, there weren’t many times when George went out in public in Santa Barbara and wasn’t recognized by several people who’d been kids at the Boys Club during his years there. Nearly all, now grownups, would express how much George and the Boys Club had meant to them in guiding them into leading worthwhile lives.

Even while raising his family and steering his nonprofit, George somehow also found time to spend multiple terms on the Goleta School Board.

George leaves behind his beautiful and loving wife Margie, four children— Karen, Eric, Marilyn and Remy—nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a stepdaughter, Polly Frost.

Funeral and memorial arrangements have yet to be made.

Nine Sheriff’s custody staff test positive for Covid-19

A group of nine Sheriff’s custody staff are recovering at home after testing positive for Covid-19 and additional staff are awaiting test results, according to the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office.

Four civilian staff and five custody deputies became symptomatic on their days off and were tested for Covid-19 starting last Friday, June 19. Each of these staff members stayed away from work after becoming symptomatic. All the civilian staff members work in Custody Records, where they do not have direct contact with inmates. Four of the custody deputies are assigned to administrative roles and do not have direct contact with the inmate population. One custody deputy does have contact with inmates but did not work after becoming symptomatic. Nine additional custody

staff who are experiencing symptoms are at home awaiting test results. The Sheriff’s Office is working in conjunction with Public Health to conduct contact tracing and have all remaining jail staff tested for Covid-19.

No inmates in the general population are symptomatic. Two inmates who recently exhibited Covid-19 symptoms during booking are being quarantined for 14 days in the Inmate Reception Center.

Separately, two Sheriff’s deputies assigned to the Santa Barbara Superior Courthouse, where they serve as bailiffs, were in a courtroom with a staff member who subsequently tested positive for Covid-19. These deputies are self-quarantining at home and are presently asymptomatic.

This week, work on a new traffic signal progresses where the new southbound Highway 101 off-ramp connects with Linden Avenue. New traffic signals will be installed on both sides of the Linden and Casitas Pass Overcrossings. Crews also continue to stripe lanes.

Public meetings announced for cannabis feedback

The county of Santa Barbara is hosting six virtual community meetings in July to receive feedback and answer questions about the amended Cannabis Business License (Chapter 50) regulating cannabis retail storefront licensing.

On Jan.14, 2020, the Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance amendment to Chapter 50 that established a merit-based, criteria-scoring system for applicants vying for a cannabis retail storefront license. This ordinance amendment became operational Feb. 13, 2020.

Per the ordinance, the process will commence with community engagement meetings to gather input from the community plan areas where storefront retail is allowed.

Chapter 50 (b) limits the number of storefront retail licenses to no more than one in each of six community plan areas. County staff is seeking feedback about the business application criteria (not applicants or specific sites) and neighborhood compatibility for the Neighborhood Compatibility Plan portion of the retail storefront application.

Community engagement meetings had been scheduled to begin in April 2020, but were cancelled due to the Covid-19 public health emergency. To prevent further delay, the County is hosting six virtual community meetings in July with many ways and opportunities for the public to participate and provide feedback. Spanish interpretation will be available.

The meeting schedule and information about how to participate and submit feedback is posted at cannabis.countyofsb.org/retail.sbc. In each of the community meetings, staff from the County Executive Office and Planning & Development will present an overview of the cannabis business licensing and permitting process, followed by an overview of the Community Plan Area (CPA). A video version of the presentation is available on the website prior to the meetings.

Rotary Club officially cancels 2020 Talent Showcase

Rotary Club of Carpinteria has announced that they will not hold the 2020 Talent Showcase. “To say it has been an unusual year is an understatement,” stated event organizers, “We were moving toward what we thought was going to be one of our best overall performances.” Organizers thanked sponsors, ticketholders and performers “who were all ready to put on a great show.”

Covid-19 passes 2,500 cases and 27 deaths

Santa Barbara County Public Health has confirmed 2,509 confirmed cases in the county, including 44 in the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria.

Daily counts of new cases continue to climb and on June 23, 63 new cases were reported countywide, including four in the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria (which to date, Public Health has not separated by city).

The city of Santa Barbara had 10 new cases on June 23, bringing their total count to 215 (seven days ago, their count was 143).

Of 2,509 cases of Covid-19 across the county, 27 have resulted in death.

Fourteen of those deaths were in the city of Santa Maria which now has 850

cases. Lompoc’s federal prison has had 990 cases, of which 978 are said to be recovered, and three ended in death.

The city of Lompoc has had four deaths of their 129 cases.

This week, nearly 10,000 people were tested for Covid-19 across the county, with a total of 35,496 people tested since testing began.

Of the confirmed cases, 246 are still active, 2,010 have fully recovered, 176 are recovering at home, 61 are hospitalized, and 19 are hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Information on 226 cases is pending an update.

We wish you a safe, happy summer and we are grateful for all your support during this most challenging and unprecedented spring semester. Your partnership during the school closure and online learning was critical to your child’s success and we appreciate how hard you worked to support your children while managing your home during this pandemic. We also appreciate the CUSD staff and students who quickly and effectively transitioned classrooms and learning to online learning at home—no easy task!

The District Leadership Team is working with California Department of Education Guidelines and Santa Barbara County Public Health required checklists and attestation process to determine the school reopening process for Aug. 24, 2020.

Essentially, all facets of the school day will need to be altered for the reopening of school. Each principal is soliciting feedback from staff, students and parents on safety, school schedules, instructional spaces and transportation that meet the Santa Barbara County Public Health requirements.

Our goal is to present a draft reopening plan to the CUSD School Board at the July 28 meeting, and we will distribute copies for families to provide feedback.

VIEWPOINT Farming of the future: Cannabis and Santa Barbara County

BY TRISTAN STRAUSS, CEO OF HEADWATERS AND PRESIDENT OF CARP GROWERS Cannabis farming is again under scrutiny as Santa Barbara County supervisors consider amending cannabis policies. The local discussion on cannabis seems to never end. Cannabis farming is new to the area as a commercial product and raises questions. My belief is that county residents will resolve the differences brought about by this and grow as a community. We can learn from each other and find common ground as the cannabis farming sector matures and is more widely accepted.

I am the president of CARP Growers, the cannabis farmers group in Carpinteria Valley, and CEO of Headwaters, a cannabis company that applies modern, data-driven methods to farming and distribution operations throughout the state. Over the past several years, I have associated with hundreds of industry professionals and politicians: skilled individuals who serve our county government and its planning department, neighbors in Carpinteria Valley who are dedicated to their community, and responsible farmers and business leaders in our nascent industry. This industry attracts compassionate young people who will be leaders in our communities for decades to come.

I’m not personally surprised by some of the opposition we have heard from county residents during this time. Cannabis has been persona non grata for 100 years, and those of us who legally operate in this industry are subject daily to the intensity of opinions and cultural friction surrounding our industry.

I believe that an honest assessment of our industry stands up to all scrutiny.

In fact, those of us who are members of CARP Growers have welcomed thousands of members of the public onto our farms. We value transparency and operate in good faith with all neighbors and regulators. Let this serve as an open invitation for anyone in the county to ask questions of farmers and contact us for an opportunity to visit and create a dialog.

My company is organized like any company built to scale. Cannabis is a big opportunity for Santa Barbara County and the future of our economy. The commodity we produce is distributed throughout the state, and those sales bring an entirely new revenue stream into our area’s economy. The county should be applauded for pioneering an effective model to support cannabis in its agricultural portfolio.

I believe that an honest assessment of our industry stands up to all scrutiny.

In fact, those of us who are members of CARP Growers have welcomed thousands of members of the public onto our farms. so there is already data we can analyze and objectively measure. Carpinteria is the only city in the county that saw a decline in its crime rate. There were fears that cannabis would cause a decline in home values and tourism, but recent data shows exactly the opposite. Carpinteria’s tourism and real estate excelled in the period leading up to 2019, a period when cannabis farming was fully operational. Agricultural employment has grown and remains the top employer in Carpinteria Valley.

Life in Carpinteria continues to improve, and through our farmers group, cannabis farmers are dedicated to helping our community thrive. We’ve already seen the added tax revenues from cannabis provide critical support to the county in a time of crisis.

I can acknowledge that intermittent odor issues linger. We have not yet arrived at optimal odor containment, but we work toward this goal every day, both by tightening existing operations and testing new technologies. Let us be clear that odor elimination is a shared goal between this industry and our neighbors. It is a matter of when, not if.

Our neighbors are smart and care deeply about Carpinteria and Santa Barbara County. The same is true for my colleagues who have chosen to work with cannabis farmers rather than against us. My hope is we continue to move forward by better understanding the benefits of cannabis farming. I advocate for a continued dialog and peace in the Santa Barbara County cannabis deadlock, and that we move forward together on common ground with a spirit of resolution and an eye toward a productive and cooperative future for all county residents.

Ray Ray Martinez book offers fond memories

Boys & Girls Clubs leaders remember George Chelini

BY CHRISTIAN BEAMISH With wit and good humor (and a whole lot of weed), Ray Ray Martinez beat stage-four colon cancer for six long years, before succumbing on March 1, 2020.

A Carpinteria local through and through, Martinez played football and baseball at Carpinteria High School and counted classmates from Canalino Elementary School as lifelong friends for most of his 51 years.

One of those classmates, Tyla Perez Natale, has assembled Martinez’ near daily Facebook posts from the year before his passing into a 64-page book with entries and photographs from his life. The result is a warm-hearted remembrance and very funny look into the worldview of a man who loved to say, “it’s a beautiful day to be alive.”

A humorous warning on the front cover cautions readers about “pervasive strong opinions, coarse language, decidedly offensive comments and jokes.”

Living up to its disclaimers, the book celebrates what Martinez referred to as his “useless bulls***t” and Martinez’ writing style is reminiscent of Mark Twain in its uniquely American and good-natured observations.

Perez Natale put the book together to support Martinez’ family—his wife Janelle of nearly 25 years, and daughters Kylee and Mackenzie—and copies are available through Facebook by contacting Tyla Natale Perez. The cost is $20, with $14 going to the Martinez family and $6 covering the printing cost of each copy.

Playing sports throughout his life Martinez was on numerous softball teams and fully embraced the game of corn hole, making customized boards and competing in tournaments in Las Vegas, LA, Orange County and Ventura.

“A lot of people absolutely adored him in the corn hole community,” Perez Natale said. She also noted that Martinez’ open embrace of marijuana was not merely for “partying” or intoxication, but that it was a crucial aspect in his recovery from multiple intense rounds of chemotherapy, and that he attributed the plant to his odds-beating fight against a very aggressive cancer.

A memorial for Ray Ray Martinez— who lived from Dec. 15, 1968 to March 1, 2020—will be announced for some time in August or September as Covid-19 conditions allow.

George Chelini served the Boys & Girls Clubs for nearly 40 years.

United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County CEO Michael Baker and retired Executive Director Sal Rodriguez released a statement in appreciation for George Chelini, who died Wednesday, June 17, one day before his 89th birthday. Chelini was the Executive Director of the Goleta Boys Club from 1958 to 1975, and CEO of the United Boys & Girls Clubs until 1993. He was responsible for developing a long list of programs including: a baseball league, fully equipped woodshop, a day camp which helped many working parents, tutoring with UCSB students, 35 years of Grand Canyon trips, a football program and Christmas tree sales.

Rodriguez wrote: “George Chelini had a big, positive impact on the kids growing up in Santa Barbara County. He was a true Boys & Girls Club professional.

I owe whatever success that I have had to that gentleman, George Chelini. George had this saying, ‘that’s a Sapo’—it meant a lucky shot in basketball, billiards, ping pong, etc. As we would say in Goleta, ‘George, you did well.’ RIP, my friend.”

Breezy beach days kick off summer photos By DeBra herrick

Carpinteria beach goers enjoy the moody blues of June Gloom during the first weeks of summer, and this year is no exception. Rolling out of bed from a few miles away, flip-flopping from vacation rentals along the sandy lanes of the Beach Neighborhood, or driving down from land-locked communities of the Central Coast and Southern California valleys, sunbathers and swimmers flocked to Carpinteria’s beaches last weekend, June 20-21, to enjoy ocean breezes and salt water splashes in the village by the sea.

CAUSE accepts CUSD budget proposal

The Carpinteria Association of United School Employees (CAUSE), led by CAUSE President Jay Hotchner, has accepted and signed the Carpinteria Unified School District 2019-20 contract proposal. “We are pleased to have resolved and closed the 2019-20 collective bargaining cycle,” Hotchner wrote. He urged the district “to develop its three-year budget with confirmed data (versus predicting upon uncertainties currently baked into the district’s budget projections).”

Additionally, Hotchner expressed his hope on behalf of the union that “the district recognizes the value of our efforts and flexibility during this Covid-19 pandemic,” stating that working together, CUSD and CAUSE “can keep this district robust until we have more certainty about what Covid-19 closures and reopenings mean to the district and the community.” Hotchner also stated that the union looks forward to a district announcement of the formation of a reopening committee that includes “the primary stakeholder groups in order to best inform these important decisions.”

Head Start plans countywide classroom reopening

Like all students, preschoolers in Head Start programs across Santa Barbara County, faced an abrupt end to the in-classroom school year when stay-at-home orders were issued March 13 in response to the growing threat from Covid-19.

Following guidance from state and local authorities, Head Start programs are set to resume July 6. “We plan to reopen all 24 of our preschool centers from Guadalupe to Cuyama to Carpinteria,” said Lorraine Neenan, CAC Children’s Services program director.

“In working towards this July 6 reopen date for the 3-to-5-year-olds in Head Start full day, full time, we are preparing for 10 students per classroom instead of the usual 17 to 20 students,” said Neenan. “We will have the extra classrooms to accomplish this since the part time, part day students won’t yet be returning. It’s not yet clear how many students will be returning, or how many new enrollees we might have when we reopen.”

A healthy breakfast, lunch and nutritious snacks are provided Monday through Friday to all students. Head Start participants receive a variety of learning experiences to foster intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth. Children participate in indoor and outdoor play and are introduced to the concepts of words and numbers to ensure they are ready for kindergarten. They are encouraged to express their feelings, and to develop self-confidence and the ability to get along with others.

California Governor mandates face coverings

The California Department of Public Health has updated its guidelines to require Californians to wear a face covering in high-risk settings. A growing body of scientific research has shown that people with no or few symptoms of Covid-19 can still spread the disease and that the use of face coverings, combined with physical distancing and frequent hand washing, will reduce the spread of Covid-19, according to Public Health.

The guidance mandates the use of cloth face coverings by the general public statewide when outside the home, with limited exceptions.

Californians must wear face coverings when they are inside of, or in line to enter, any indoor public space, or while outdoors in public spaces where maintaining a physical distance of six feet is difficult.

Proper use of face masks includes covering both the nose and mouth and washing/disinfecting between uses.

Children aged two and under are exempt along with people with a medical, mental health or developmental disability that prevents wearing a face covering. Face coverings can also be removed if in the hearing impaired and deaf community in which the ability to see the mouth is needed for essential communication. Roasted-Almond Thumb Cookies CVN

CHEF RANDY RANDY GRAHAM As a kid, I asked my dad how the impression in these cookies stayed there after baking. He just shrugged and said, “I don’t know the answer son. I just know they are a treat.”

As an adult I learned that thumbs are the answer to the perfect jam-filled cookie. Yep. Good old opposable thumbs. I’ve used my index finger in the past and always come back to using my thumb.

Somehow it just feels right.

These cookies are fun and colorful and appeal to the kid in all of us.

Ingredients:

1½ cups all-purpose flour 1½ cups raw almonds (roasted) 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature) ½ cup granulated sugar 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup raw sugar (to roll cookie dough in) Jams and/or lemon curd (for filling)

HOW TO WEAR A MASK:

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Pulse flour and almonds in a food processor until almonds are finely ground.

Add baking powder and salt and pulse to blend. Using an electric mixer on high speed, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about four minutes. Add egg and vanilla and beat until pale and fluffy, about four minutes. Reduce speed to low and gradually add dry ingredients. Mix just enough to combine.

Place raw sugar in a shallow bowl. Scoop out dough by the tablespoonful and roll into balls (if dough is sticky, chill 20 minutes). Roll in the raw sugar and place on two parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing 2” apart. Bake cookies for five minutes and remove from oven.

Using your thumb, make a deep indent in each ball. Bake cookies, rotating baking sheets halfway through, until golden, 12–14 minutes. Transfer to wire racks and let cool. Fill with seedless jam or lemon curd using a small spoon.

The vehicle was on the roadway and towed, because the car keys could not be located since the woman had thrown them somewhere.

The resident was contacted and claimed the victim was not readily identifiable and that he had pushed him, but never choked him. The victim requested prosecution. On Saturday, July 6, athletes of all ages and sizes participated in Carpinteria High School’s All-comers Meet held on campus at Valley Memorial Stadium. The highlight of the meet was Westlake High School’s Paige Sommers clearing a stadium record of 12 feet, seven inches in the pole vault. Paige finished second in the state this year at 13 feet, and was CIF Division II champ at 13 feet, six inches.

La Iglesia San Jose, Parte I

The first Catholic Church in Carpinteria was established in 1894. It was named “La Iglesia San Jose” and was a used building purchase. It had been built in 1872 by the Methodists on Upson Road, a road that still exists today, but looks more like a long driveway off the west side of Santa Monica Road as one drives towards Foothill Road.

The Methodists sold the church to the Catholics who had no church structure of their own. The Methodists relocated to the corner of 8th Street and Maple Avenue with a used purchase of their own, buying and moving, piece by piece, one of the Santa Barbara Methodist churches that was relatively new, but had become expendible. Presumably, the Carpinteria Methodists removed the church bell and tower off the structure on Upson Road, because the Catholics were left with a church without a bell, something considered indispensible to the parishioners.

Most of the Carpinteria Catholics were Spanish-speaking Californios, that is, Europeans originating from Spain whose predessessors had settled here.

They were mostly the descendents of early Spanish expedition explorers, having Santa Barbara Presidio surnames like Rodriguez, Lobero and Hernandez.

Mary Lopez, who attended the church, is quoted by Week of 6/22/20 - 6/28/20 Jayne Cravens Caldwell in “Carpinteria As It Was” as follows, “…there weren’t too many Catholics.

Most of the people in Carpinteria in those early days were Protestants.” Indeed, there were churches in MARY RAYA MOLINA Carpinteria for Methodists, Episcopals, Baptists and A Communion celebration and the blessing of the new church bell at Iglesia San Jose, ca. 1920.

UNPREDICTABLE WILDERNESS CHUCK GRAHAM

The grasses had been mowed down to the nub around the countless burrows built by busy giant kangaroo rats (GKR), the keystone species of the Carrizo Plain National Monument.

Prey for a host of predators big and small, yet many of their predators utilize GKR burrows as their own, making homes for San Joaquin kit foxes, badgers, long-tailed weasels, Western Pacific rattlesnakes, blunt-nosed leopard lizards and burrowing owls.

I was sitting on a kit fox den for at least eight hours patiently waiting and hoping for some behavior amongst the six pups inside. It’s a unique ecosystem the Carrizo Plain, where everything centers on the GKR burrows. Antelope ground squirrels (AGS), a reliable prey source for kit foxes, also double as a distress signal for the smallest canid on mainland North America. When the kit foxes are out in the open and they hear the piercing chirp call of an AGS the kit foxes react quickly, standing alert or diving into any number of entry points of a specific den site. Golden eagles and coyotes are always on the lookout for the endangered kit fox.

Finally, the pups emerged, and they were much more active when their dad was outside the den standing watch.

Otherwise, they just lie around. An hour of jostling, wrestling and greeting dad an hour before dark and the pups were finished for the day. Virtually every night, as soon as it gets dark, their dad leaves the den on the hunt for GKRs and AGSs.

Always motivated

I’ve always been motivated for photographing landscapes, wildflowers, wildlife, rock art, ranch buildings on the Carrizo Plain, but the last 50 days I was especially motivated. My first photo book will be published and released by late 2020. It’s a culmination of 14 years of photography and those last 50 days.

The book will be 116 pages of photos, half of which are slide film captures. I was a late convert to digital. However, 2017 and 2019 were Super Bloom years, a long wait since the last one in 2010, so I really wasn’t feeling stressed about experiencing another bloom. My book will also contain an intro by me, a foreword by Neil Havlik, the president of the Carrizo Conservancy and three essays written by me focusing on Flora and Fauna, The Sweeping Plain and Reflections.

Going into 2020 though, I felt a sense of urgency to better the wildlife images I already had, and for whatever reason things came together for me. I found multiple kit fox dens spread out across the Carrizo Plain. There were multiple barn owl nests, one super active burrowing owl den, too many antelope ground squirrels to count, more close calls with Western Pacific Rattlesnakes than I cared to count, bugling tule elk and very curious pronghorn antelope.

Prior to the winter and spring of 2020, I had only seen one badger and one long-tailed weasel during my entire time spent on the grasslands going back to 2006. Both those species became my nemesis animals this past spring.

You know when you have that feeling when something doesn’t feel right?

A couple trips ago I was sitting on a reliable kit fox den and it just felt like it wasn’t active. Kit foxes keep multiple den sites and move around as the pups get older and are more mobile. I gave up after only two hours sitting in the wet grass. I moved over to their other site and had a bead on both, but nothing materialized at either site, but then something stirred at the originally site.

Long-tailed weasels are brazen little rascals, but it’s funny how prey animals know when the kit foxes have moved on to another site. The hotdog-built weasel stood tall out of one of the entry points of the kit fox den and proceeded to run through the entire site. It allowed me to approach from my belly, completely covered in stickers, but it was all worth it. It was comical watching it flush out GKRs but always coming up on the short end of the stick.

I didn’t have much hope when it came to a badger. Their denning behavior is complex. One den can have 900 meters of tunnels and 40 openings. That’s some serious tunneling. During the first week of June I had aims for a badger out along Elkhorn Road in the southern corner of the National Monument. I was up at 3 a.m. in Carpinteria and on the Plain by 5:30. Once I hit the flats a badger rumbled out in front of me on the road.

Even with its awkward gait and its loose hanging skin, it bolted ahead knowing exactly where to go, it’s den. It gave me a look over its right shoulder and then vanished. I found the den and heard mewing down below. I waited all day, but nothing stirred.

I saw it again during the second week of June. It was a long way out, working a GKR den, pacing right and left, scratching and digging and then it was gone.

Not every species was accounted for in my book, but it sure has been fun trying.
