At press time, Carpinterians were gearing up for the last surge of the second storm predicted to move in late Wednesday afternoon. Cannabis money brings dissention to CUSD schoolboard

The Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees held a contentious meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8, in the Carpinteria City Hall chambers. At issue was whether or not a gift from CARP Growers—the association of local cannabis producers—should be noted as an amended agenda item from the previous schoolboard meeting. After significant discussion, the board voted unanimously to amend the previous agenda, acknowledging a $1,200 donation from the CARP Growers to Carpinteria High School on Dec. 7, 2018.

Boardmember Maureen Foley Claffey first moved to amend the minutes from a previous meeting, citing the CARP Growers’ donation and her concern that a gift from the cannabis industry violates a schoolboard policy of not accepting gifts promoting the use of violence, drugs, tobacco or alcohol.

A back-and-forth then ensued, with Board President Andy Sheaffer stating that the donation came from the Rotary Club, and Superintendent Diana Rigby also indicating that her records show receipt of funds from the Rotary Club.

“Is this not Mr. Cornejo holding a check?” Foley Claffey asked, holding up a copy of a photograph in the Coastal View News (Vol. 25, No. 12) that shows the high school principal posed with several growers and a $1,200 check with the CARP Growers insignia.

“If you’re basing that on a facsimile of a check…” Sheaffer said, before Foley Claffey shot back, “I’m basing it on Ms. Rigby’s Superintendent’s Report (in which) she thanks the CARP Growers association…”

Superintendent Diana Rigby said, “All I know is the Rotary Club donated the $1,200 check to the high school.

“Which came from the CARP Growers,” Foley Claffey asserted.

“Yes,” responded Rigby.

“OK,” Foley Claffey said. “All I’m asking is that we amend it (the agenda from the previous board meeting) to reflect facts.”

Superintendent’s report

CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby presented her report, passing on the thanks the principals sent to their teachers, staff and parent volunteers. Rigby also noted the work Diana Zapata put in on the district’s behalf in negotiating the 2018/19 teachers and staff contract, which has been ratified and provides a 0.5 percent costof-living increase to certified staff, and a 5 percent increase to classified employees.

The superintendent reported that the AHA social and emotional learning curriculum that has been taught at the high school for the past 10 years will now be extended to the middle school as well.

ALICE (Alert, Lock-down, Inform, Counter and Evacuate) training was provided to district leadership and security staff, and was coordinated by Rincon and Foothill High School Principal Barnaby Gloger and Procore.

After significant discussion, the board voted unanimously to amend the previous agenda, acknowledging a $1,200 donation from the CARP Growers schools with donations of time and money, noting the donation that Foley Claffey brought up: “In December we received funds from Sunset Rotary and CARP Growers, which were raised during the Avocado Festival for (CHS students) to tour three colleges and the Ronald Reagan Library.” The district also received funds from the Lions Club Festival of Trees to purchase new science lab equipment at the high school. The superintendent also acknowledged donations from schoolbased parent groups that have raised between $12,000 and $70,000 this year, and noted that the Carpinteria Education Foundation has given $5 million over the past 26 years. Rigby provided an update on Measure U projects, stating that middle school students would move into new Gen 7 classrooms on Jan. 14, and that the high school would move into their Gen 7s at the end of the month.

The superintendent moved to dissolve a policy subcommittee and the board voted 3-2 in favor of dissolving (Foley Claffey and Delgado dissenting). Foley Claffey and Rogelio Delgado were the board members currently serving on the committee and both expressed disagreement with the decision.

Discussion then centered on a $95,000 grant for educational software that would enable teachers to better track student performance and progress. A unanimous vote approved the purchase of the software.

Maureen Fitzgerald reported on the state’s annual audit of the district, and stated that some minor paperwork issues cited last June were corrected by the follow-up audit in October, and CUSD was found to have no financial irregularities.

Community holds conversation on mental health and suicide prevention

Dozens of voices hummed throughout the Woman’s Club during a community meeting on mental health and suicide prevention on Jan. 11. “This room is a beautiful choir of mental health advocates and partners,” observed Anne Marie Cameron, CEO of Mental Wellness Center of Santa Barbara County, as she took the podium. The community meeting, organized by HopeNet of Carpinteria, followed a workshop model with speakers introducing community services and needs, and participants then discussing in groups their personal and professional experiences.

In an email to attendees from the office of Supervisor Das Williams, the goal of the meeting is described as collaboratively producing “an online resource guide of mental health services and resources and to develop an action plan for the Carpinteria community.” At the meeting, Williams welcomed and thanked all participants for the work they’d be doing that morning (the first of two workshops, the second to be held in April).

The event was filled with startling numbers and hopeful words.

The audience nodded as Cameron explained that “25 years ago, people used to whisper to me that they had a family member with a mental health issue. But we live in an age now where Lady Gaga is providing mental health services at all of her concerts. People don’t whisper about it anymore.” Cameron declared, “People shouldn’t have to qualify for services, they should just have to ask for them,” and applause erupted. “We have to be the stigma-busters and encourage people to talk about it instead of being surprised by it,” she concluded.

In the last eight months, the public health system in Carpinteria has screened over 890 individuals, 79 percent of whom were eligible for mental health services, stated Dr. Van Do-Reynoso, public health director for Santa Barbara County. For Do-Reynoso, the big question is “what can we do as a system and in partnership to lower that number?” Her response is to approach mental health “upstream,” meaning through prevention, early intervention and support. “Our passion,” said Do-Reynoso, “is really to get it upstream to prevent mental health problems from

taking root. That means acknowledging the effect of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on the lifespan of an individual… If we can address mild to moderate mental health, we can lower 67

percent of suicide and moderate mental health issues.”

Carpinteria Unified School District’s Special Education Director kristen Escobedo also spoke on the critical place of mental health and wellness in the school system, including the lack of funding to provide 100 percent of students in need with services (roughly half of students referred receive services) and the urgent need to fund a full time mental health counselor at the middle school.

The California Women for Agriculture (CWA) 2019 Annual Convention was held in Solvang from Jan. 11 to 13. Carpinteria/Santa Barbara CWA chapter was instrumental in the gathering’s success.

Carpinterians Wilja Happe, Elizabeth Van Eyck and Sandy Weil served as the 2019 CWA State Convention Committee Co-Chairs. Happe is past CWA State Parliamentarian, and Van Eyck and Weil are past presidents of the Carpinteria/ Santa Barbara CWA Chapter. Additionally, Carpinteria-based KopSun a cannabis information and wellness resource, presented the panel discussion “Seed to Sale.”

Obituaries

Juanita Joyce Hinkhouse Abbott 1/19/1933 – 7/27/2018

Juanita Hinkhouse Abbott was called home by God on July 27, 2018, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Atalissa, Iowa on Jan. 19, 1933 to Harold and Florence (Jensen) Hinkhouse. She attended local grade schools and graduated from Atalissa High School on May 15, 1951.

She went on to study telecommunications and graduated from the Electronic RadioTelevision Institute of Omaha, Nebraska in August of 1951. She was employed by United Airlines and worked and lived in Chicago, Illinois, San Francisco, California and Miami, Florida.

Returning home to Iowa she met and married her husband of 43 years, Norman Thomas Abbott, son of Rolland and Zella (Noble) Abbott of Wilton, Iowa on August 27, 1955 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa.

The couple subsequently moved to the small beach town of Carpinteria, California in 1959 and lived there for the

Russell Leo Gosselin 7/08/1931 – 1/04/2018

Russell Leo Gosselin peacefully passed on to his new life in heaven on Jan. 4, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Buffalo, New York in July, 1931 to Leo and Irene Gosselin. He moved to California with his family at age 12 and ended up in the little beach town of Carpinteria with his wife, Patricia, where you would often see him “flying” by on his bicycle or out tending to his roses on Cameo Road.

During this time, Juanita worked for the Carpinteria Unified School District.

Upon retirement, she and Norm made several memorable trips overseas, including Scandinavia, Africa and China. Norm Abbott predeceased his wife on June 12, 1998 from cancer and Juanita continued to live in Carpinteria for the next 15 years, traveling the world with her many friends. She was active at Faith Lutheran Church and marked her 80th birthday with a celebration of life at the church she and her husband helped to establish.

The final trip of her life was a cruise with her daughter to Eastern Europe in September of 2013. Soon after their return she became ill and the family moved her from Carpinteria to San Jose, California.

She lived her remaining years at Glorian Manor in Campbell, California.

Juanita leaves her children, daughter Kathryn, son Kelly and his wife Marjorie, son Casey and his wife Sherry and their children, her two granddaughters, Meghan and Rebecca. She also leaves two sisters-in-law, Shirley (Eugene) Hinkhouse and Evelyn (Guy) Hinkhouse, her cousin Arlene (Roberts) Keith and her husband Derwood, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Harold and Florence, her husband Norman Thomas Abbott, her two brothers, Eugene Hinkhouse and Guy Hinkhouse, sister-in-law Leona Mae (Abbott) Gorsuch-Schroeder, nephew Marlon Hinkhouse, and nieces Wendy (Gorsuch) Black and Vonda (Hinkhouse) Ludke.

Per her wishes, Juanita was cremated and her ashes were scattered in the San Francisco Bay.

He leaves behind son Jim Gosselin (Coleen) and daughter Marie Tolar (Doug) of Half Moon Bay, daughter Nanci Alvarado (Jimmy) of Carpinteria, grandsons, Daniel Gosselin (Paige), Ryan Gosselin, Justin Alvarado, Matt Tolar, granddaughter Monica Tolar (Ross), and great-granddaughters Rilee and Quinn.

Russ enjoyed growing up with his five loving siblings and often told great stories of their shenanigans. He is preceded in death by his beautiful wife Patricia, sister Rita and son-in-law Jimmy.

Russ enjoyed spending time with his family camping, backyard BBQs, and impromptu get-togethers. He was a wonderful neighbor and helpful friend.

Russ worked hard as a technical engineer throughout his career and enjoyed his retirement by traveling the world with his great friend Kay. We will miss you immensely, but your spirit will live on in all of us as we all aspire to be loyal and loving people through your inspiration.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and at Carpinteria Cemetery to follow.

Linda Jean (Dawson) Van Dyke 8/22/1955 – 1/9/2019

Linda passed away on Jan. 9, 2019 with her family by her side.

Linda was born in Los Angeles in 1955 and moved to Carpinteria with her parents and four siblings in 1962 after spending summers camping at the Carpinteria State Beach.

Growing up in the foothills of Carpinteria was filled with a lot of freedom and adventure—riding bikes down Foothill Road to Mill’s Drugs or Tino’s, hiking up the creek to the “Burnt Down House” above La Mirada, long days at the beach and hanging with friends and her six siblings.

She attended St. Joseph’s School up through eighth grade and graduated from Carpinteria High School in 1973. She was involved in cheerleading, guitar and horseback riding and has many lifelong friends from her time in Carpinteria.

During these years, the family spent their summer vacations at Ripplewood in Big Sur, where the adventures continued and more friendships developed. Sadly, in 1972, Linda lost her mom, Kathleen Dawson, and Linda and her older sister Donna became “moms” to the five younger kids.

Linda’s close friend in high school, Donna (Simms) Stevenson, lived around the corner and Donna’s mom, Neda Simms, became a surrogate mom to Linda in that challenging time. Neda continued to be “mom” to Linda and her family for all of her life.

The ultimate executive assistant, she developed those skills at jobs with Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, McGowan Guntermann, the American Cancer Society in Lompoc (where she coordinated the initial Relay for Life event), and spent her final 20 years working at Coast Hills Credit Union. She also employed these organizational skills with her volunteering efforts, including being a PTA mom, Girl Scout Troop leader, water polo, volleyball and football supporter for her kids, and with the Rancho Vino fundraisers.

Linda was married to the love of her life, Marty Van Dyke, for 35 years (after meeting when Linda was a reserve officer with the Santa Barbara Police De-

partment). Upon their marriage, Linda became a stepmom to Charlie (who was 4-years-old) and subsequently welcomed three more children, Katie Steltzer (Ben), Amanda Van Dyke and Andrew Van Dyke (Alexis). Linda and Marty are now grandparents to eight.

Linda was a dear and cherished friend to many, and a surrogate mom to many more—her house (and her energy) were the hub of many BBQs and celebrations, usually with Marty cooking and Linda being the planner and social butterfly.

Linda and Marty and family enjoyed many camping trips to El Capitan and Refugio State Beach Parks, Yosemite, Big Sur, Cachuma and Lake Casitas, often accompanied by extended family and friends. Linda was a longstanding member in her local bunco group, the Women’s Investment Network and the Pier Fitness pool group. She also loved board and card games, pinochle, poker and scrabble.

Education was a priority to Linda, and she proudly received her AA degree from Allan Hancock College in 2014. At the ceremony, she was recognized for having the longest span between first year and her graduation, but she was bound and determined to finish (and she did)!

Her Catholic faith was also important to Linda, and she was a long-time parishioner of the La Purisima Parish in Lompoc. Last May, as part of a trip to Europe, she visited both the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Sanctuary of our Lady of Lourdes in France. She also had family trips to both Flagstaff, Arizona and Disneyland (with the grandkids) in 2018.

Linda experienced her first heart issues in 2003 and had been under a cardiologist’s care since that time; this did not slow her down until the last few months of her life. Since her initial diagnosis, she has lived her life to the fullest.

She spent many a weekend visiting with friends and family (out of town) and with trips to Colorado for her grandchildren’s birthdays.

The family wishes to thank the doctors who provided great care to Linda over the years, Dr. Cory Gusland (Lompoc), Dr. Joseph Ilvento (Santa Barbara) and Dr. Michele Hamilton and staff at Cedars Sinai (Los Angeles).

Linda is survived by her husband Marty and four children, her six siblings, many devoted friends and extended family, and her dog Sophie.

A rosary will be held at the StarbuckLind Mortuary in Lompoc on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m.

The funeral mass will be held at La Purisima Conception, Lompoc on Friday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m., with burial at Lompoc Cemetery and reception following at the Parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.

Evacuation preparation, affordable housing and environmental concerns dominate council meeting

At the Jan. 14 Carpinteria City Council meeting, the first of the new year and the last to be held before the council relocates to its temporary quarters at 4180 Via Real, city residents spoke out on matters ranging from evacuation zone safety measures to affordable housing protections to new single-use plastics regulations.

Matters got off to a happy start when new Councilman Roy Lee, successor to 28-year council veteran Brad Stein, joined Mayor Wade Nomura and the rest of the council in honoring city residents Brad and Barbara Smith. The Smiths, long-time volunteers for the City’s library system, were recognized for their “many accomplishments and long service.” In keeping with Nomura’s pledge from the previous council meeting on Dec. 10, council members Lee, Gregg A. Carty and Fred Shaw joined Vice Mayor Al Clark and the mayor to award the proclamation.

City Manager Dave Durflinger presented information from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office relating to evacuation orders for residents living on or near the Santa Monica and Carpinteria creeks.

Debris flow concerns should not be taken lightly, Durflinger said, and urged all residents to check Santa Barbara’s Aware and Prepare online resource, readysbc.org.

The city manager reminded residents that although council meetings will be held at the new Via Real location, Street Maintenance and the Public Works will

remain headquartered at the City Hall campus should residents need to drop off used oil or obtain sandbags. Durflinger also urged residents who are interested to apply for open positions on the City’s Mobile Home Rent Stabilization Board and the Carpinteria First Committee.

Local resident Bob Franco led off the Public Comments with an impassioned address to the council, testifying to what he claims are widespread rent stabilization violations on the part of Carpinteria mobile home communities. “Sneaky and deceptive” rental agreement practices “delete what little we have left of affordable housing,” said Franco, as he petitioned the board to review rent stabilization statutes and enforcement practices.

Carty expressed support for mobile home residents, and moved to place the matter of possible rental agreement practice violations on the agenda for the council’s next meeting.

The council next turned to the thorny issue of single-use and non-recyclable plastics, and their effect on Carpinteria beaches and the global environment.

Penny Owens, representing Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, thanked the council for their environmental leadership, but stressed that the most common form of pollution marring local beaches are microplastics, which the group’s clean-up instruments are ill-equipped to locate and remove. Shaw, noting that some studies claim that by 2050 there will be more plastics than fish in the world’s oceans, showed strong support for the public comments, as did Clark, Carty and Nomura. Noting the potential burden on local restauranteurs, Lee called for

greater educational efforts rather than legal mandates. The council voted 5-0 to direct staff to outline future regulatory options, and present them to members at the next meeting.

To close the meeting, Durflinger presented information on bids for City infrastructure upkeep projects, asserting “we have not invested enough in pavement maintenance, ideally we’ll reverse [that].” The city manager also urged the council to approve purchase of a new portable generator for 4180 Via Real, arguing it’s importance for emergency situations. Council members agreed, approving the purchase 5-0.

Local clerk risks life to catch a criminal

Alfredo “Fredy” Figueroa helps police apprehend two armed robbery suspects

By Peter Dugré In retrospect, Alfredo “Fredy” Figueroa said it might not have been a good idea to chase an armed robber out into the night.

In the moment on Jan. 7 at about 10:30 p.m., adrenaline led Figueroa to follow the masked man who had just pointed a gun at him inside City Market on Linden Avenue.

With a little help from some neighbors, Figueroa apprehended the robber, whose gun was a fake, took back the stolen $700 and turned the suspect over to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies.

The rest of that Monday evening had been quiet at the market near the beach.

Figueroa, who has manned the counter at City Market for 10 years, prepared to close shop. Then a figure in a black mask and clothing walked through the door pointing what appeared to be a pistol. He aimed the pistol down aisles scanning for customers or other employees and then turned to the cashier.

Figueroa, as seen on surveillance footage, calmly handed over a wad of cash, and then another, and finally the entire cash drawer. Still, the burglar was unsatisfied. He insisted there was more money hidden somewhere and threatened to shoot.

Defiant, Figueroa said, “If you want to shoot me, shoot me. There’s no more money.”

It’s not the first time Figueroa has been held up. He similarly handed over all the money at the Carpinteria Avenue City Market on Dec. 14, less than a month before this episode.

This time, though, Figueroa got mad.

He also came to believe that the robber was bluffing and the gun wasn’t real. As soon as the robber fled the store, Figueroa ran out from behind the counter, up 5th Street and then around the corner on Elm Avenue, where he caught up with the suspect, 25-year-old Jose Romero of Ventura.

Figueroa managed to grab Romero and put him in the bear hug of his life. As he struggled back toward the store, Figueroa began yelling for help outside an apartment building.

Romero struggled and pleaded that

Figueroa let him go. He said he knew him and asked that he be spared from jail.

Then an accomplice who had been in a getaway car emerged and tried to punch Figueroa, who dodged the blow using Romero as a shield.

Michael Alanis, 17, a Carpinteria High School student and part time City Market employee, lives nearby and recognized Figueroa’s voice calling for help. Alanis, his brother, sister, father and a couple of passersby got involved after Figueroa had struggled to contain the robber and then the accomplice, 25-year-old Denis Gutierrez of Carpinteria, for some five minutes.

“I was at home gaming it and heard Fredy’s voice, so I came out,” Alanis said.

Figueroa said that some bystanders watched at first unsure if it was mere horseplay or who to help. It wasn’t until the witnesses recognized that it was their neighborhood store clerk that they called 9-1-1 and jumped in. At some point, when backup arrived to help Figueroa, Gutierrez fled.

Alanis said he and his neighbors grabbed poles and were trying to keep Romero at bay, but he struggled to get free.

“I don’t know what he was on, but he wouldn’t stop,” Alanis said.

Figueroa instructed Alanis to go to the store, because he had abandoned it to catch the robber. They believed that Gutierrez may have returned to the empty store.

Sheriff’s deputies and an ambulance arrived to collect Romero, and by then, Figueroa and witnesses had recognized the second suspect, which led deputies to a vehicle parked nearby belonging to Gutierrez.

A K-9 was called in, and Gutierrez was eventually traced back to his vehicle where he was hiding in the backseat.

In the days that followed, Figueroa’s coworkers, impressed by his courage, found a sign for the store that reads “Beware of Freddy.”

“My family says, ‘Don’t do it.’ If it was a real gun, he’d shoot me, or if the other guy had a knife,” said Figueroa, pondering the moment. “But that guy!”

Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year:

SPARK45 ignites passion for health and wellness

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce will award SPARK45 Small Business of the Year honors at their annual Community Awards Banquet on Jan. 26.

CVN caught up with SPARK45 owner Danielle Bordenave to learn more about her path to success.

Describe what you do in one sentence.

I work with people to improve their health, mobility and overall wellness through fitness, physical therapy and personal training.

Do you have an area of expertise?

I specialize in outpatient orthopedics treating a variety of injuries from post-operative knee, hip and shoulder to more non-operative injuries of the spine.

In addition, I work with individuals with balance challenges and vertigo.

What was your path to starting this business?

My path to SPARK45 started long before I realized it, and has been a great adventure. When I started off as a physical therapist (PT), I never planned to even be a manager let alone open my own business. I actually stated, “I don’t ever want to manage a PT office. I want to work with people.” I started working as a PT in 2005 in a traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation center in Southern Illinois.

I became a health and wellness coach as I realized I wanted to do more than just treat individuals with injuries. I started making exercise a priority in my life taking classes four or five times a week at a local “Barre” studio. I even auditioned to become an instructor (I did not make the cut). In 2012, I started attending leadership trainings that were based out of Ojai. This is when I discovered and fell in love with Carpinteria. In 2014, I realized it was time for a BIG change so I decided to leave my job, and leave Chicago and move to Carpinteria to start my own business.

My vision for that business was a space to provide fitness, physical therapy, seminars and workshops to help people live their best lives possible. After arriving in Carpinteria, I took three months off to settle in and also see what I really wanted to create. I decided against opening my own business as I was overwhelmed about the task of accepting billing/insurance. I started working part time as a physical therapist and realized I really did want to create my own business. During these first few months in California, I had discovered a new workout that I also really enjoyed. I decided the workout, Lagree Fitness was a great compliment to physical therapy.

The workout is high intensity and low impact completed on a Megaformer. I was passionate about both so I decided to go for it and open SPARK45. I opened in

What’s the best part of owning a Carpinteria business?

The best part of owning a small business in Carpinteria is getting to know so many people in the community.

I have met so many people, many of which I now call my friends. I also love that I can walk from my house, to SPARK45, to lunch and to the beach.

What would you tell people who are thinking of opening a business in Carpinteria?

For anyone opening a business here or elsewhere, I think the first key is getting clear about what you want

to create and why. I am passionate about fitness, physical therapy and living a healthy active life. Once you have that figured, I think the best start to start getting connected in the community. I did this by joining the Chamber before opening and setting up a local bank account. The other important thing to do in order to avoid challenges later is to go to City Hall before signing any leases on spaces to make sure your business is allowed in the space you want. Also, here in Carpinteria, the City will give you lots of good ideas, resources and tips to make everything run smoothly from the start.

Morrison returned to applause and took his seat as new chairman of the SCA’s board of directors.

Morrison and Eric Panofsky are new faces on the board, joining current holdovers Reeve Woolpert, Jim Witmer and Jeff O’Neill.

Special guest speaker was Diana Rigby, superintendent of the Carpinteria Unified School District, who updated the community on two issues: construction of the new Summerland School and the district board’s decision (since rescinded) to sell the Whitney Avenue property.

According to Rigby, out of the $90 million bond to repair or replace the district’s schools, the $2.5 million allocated for Summerland School falls far short of an actual replacement cost of $6 million.

Calling Summerland School “the jewel on the hill,” Rigby distributed site plans and emphasized the district’s commitment to funding the whole project.

The school district’s November decision to sell the Whitney Avenue property (deeded to Summerland School in 1955)

generated local controversy at the time, and some controversy continued, generating a spirited discussion about the district’s right to sell.

Rigby emphasized the need for a Summerland representative to serve on the district’s Real Property District Advisory Committee, which was formed for the purpose of disposing of excess property.

Summerland’s previous rep on that committee had resigned before the decision on the Whitney Avenue parcel was made.

Although the Whitney property is 6.84 acres, its appraised value is $500,000 because it has no water. Residents at the meeting called for a delay in decision making, citing the possibility that future water might become available, greatly elevating the land’s value. Some also called into question the legality of the district’s right to dispose of property deeded solely to Summerland School.

SCA Chair Morrison promised the next meeting of the school district’s advisory committee would have a Summerland member to represent local concerns.

The school site plans shared by Rigby show an attractive set of classroom buildings that make clever use of the hilly site.

No one asked when construction would start. Good question.

Epiphanies not resolutions

January 6 was Epiphany, celebrated as the day the Magi arrived to worship the Babe. We sort of ignore it here, although it’s a big day in Europe, with parades and children getting gifts from St. Nick. Here, I see it as the day the Christmas decorations get put away.

So, mission accomplished. Decorations down, candle holders, Santas, pine cone baskets, wreaths, 4-foot fake Sequoia tree with its branches of nesting birds. I gave up the big tree long ago, redistributed all the special ornaments among kids and settled on this fake redwood tree. With

I no longer make New Year’s resolutions. Those promises to do better, be better, make dramatic changes always pretty much fizzled out before they got any traction. But I like the idea of New Year’s epiphanies. We all experience them from time to time—sudden, intuitive realizations that come to us in a flash.

I like seeing it there, as if a giant wave carried a boat up and over Summerland’s hills and left it stranded behind the town.

So out of place and time, its strangeness makes me smile. The thing itself is not an epiphany, but my joy in discovering it there each day is. The pleasure one can take in curious misalignments!

On a cool, rainy day after Epiphany, as we were walking the dogs along Whitney Avenue, two guys overtook our stroll.

One was barefoot, carrying his shoes.

“You gonna put those on when you get home?” my husband asked. “Naw,” the guy said, “they got wet and I didn’t want to get trench foot.”

Trench foot? Really? How did the term for a ghastly foot problem suffered by trench-fighting troops in WWI make it into the next century lexicon of a barefoot millennial? Ah, the power of words. They get recycled, their meanings changed,

enlarged or diluted. The real horror of trench foot (some soldiers needed amputations) softened to describe a case of athlete’s foot. It was a little epiphany for me.

Okay, I did kind of promise myself to do more meditation this year. We spend so much time in our heads we forget ourselves, our surroundings, our dayto-day embeddedness in life. We race through days, slowing down only when we hit the big stop signs—life changes, sickness, trauma. Stepping out of the race, sitting still, reining in thoughts, attending to your own breathing, goes a long way toward smoothing a tattered brain.

I’m hoping meditation is the right balm for my flittery bird-brain head. I see it as a facilitator of epiphanies. I can’t gather those insightful gems if I’m traveling too fast to recognize them. It’s that stopping to smell the flowers thing. A calm mind is a receptive mind. I crave time out from the race (I won’t say rat race) for reflection, for gathering insights. You can’t have too many of those!

One good thing: Sinking deep into a winter day, rain and umbrellas, mud-foot dogs, a warm room, tea and cookies.

What’s new at the harbor seal rookery?

On Jan. 8 at approximately 4:45 p.m. a drone was flown over the seal rookery and crashed into the bluffs falling down to the beach into the protected region. Volunteers called the police but no fines have been confirmed. On the left, seals are pictured at ease in their natural habitat before the drone incident. At right, immediately after the drone incident, seals are shown quickly moving to the ocean and leaving the rookery.

Volunteers for the bluff overlook and beach are always needed. It’s fun, and maybe you will be the next to see a fin whale. The first well-documented pup was born this week. The following counts taken from January 7-13 were compiled from Carpinteria Seal Watch volunteer reports. Carpinteria harbor seal beach closure runs from Dec. 1 to June 1 each year. Seal Watch volunteers are still welcome to sign up by calling (805) 684-2247.

Over 830 people observed the seals, including visitors from Canada, Germany, China, China (Hong Kong), Taiwan, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Denmark, Montana, Arizona, Minnesota, Michigan, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Wisconsin, Alaska, Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The seals were frightened into the ocean by a paraglider and by a drone. As the drone descended nearly to the seals it crashed, and of course, could not be recovered from the area protected by City ordinance.

Whales and dolphins are often seen, but it was very exciting to see a fin whale very close to shore. Fin whales are the second largest mammals on earth, but are slender, fast swimmers, known as the “greyhounds of the seas.”

On a sad note, a seal with a net or cord wound tightly around its neck was observed several times.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. To find out more, visit sealwatchcarpinteria.com.

“Damn that’s cold”: Island Brewing Company announces theme for Stories on Tap

Yarn spinners will gather at the Island Brewing Company on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. for Stories on Tap, a one-hour story-telling event. For the January edition, chroniclers will focus on the theme of “Damn that’s cold.” IBC’s Stories on Tap combines craft beer and good stories with a bit of hilarity, a dash of heart break, some surprise, and above all, the unexpected.

Disaster Relief Grant funding application period opens

The County of Santa Barbara is now accepting applications for artists and small nonprofits impacted by the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 debris flow. The California Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts recently awarded Santa Barbara County over $30,000 to aid artists and small nonprofits impacted by these events.

Individual artists and nonprofit organizations with a budget under $500,000 based in Santa Barbara, Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria will be eligible to apply.

The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission will help oversee this program. Grant workshops are available on Feb. 4 in Santa Barbara and Feb. 6 in Carpinteria. Visit sbac.ca.gov/county-grants/ for more information or to register. Applications will be accepted until March 15.

Oak Group exhibition benefits Los Padres ForestWatch

Emerging Leaders in the Arts program now accepting applications

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Santa Barbara is now accepting applications for its Emerging Leaders in the Arts (ELA) program. Funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation, ELA’s year-long program engages individuals who identify as people of color with museum professionals. The program seeks to create pathways to arts leadership roles for underrepresented community sectors in the museum profession. In addition to museum tours, seminars and trainings, the program also provides an annual stipend.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the San Rafael Wilderness, the Oak Group’s exhibition “In Wildness” will open Jan. 25 at the Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College. A reception will be held on Jan. 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. for the public to meet the artists and Los Padres ForestWatch staff, as well as other lovers of wilderness and art.

The show will feature new landscape paintings by members of the Oak Group highlighting the wilderness area in Los Padres National Forest. Oak Group artists, many from Carpinteria, including the group’s cofounder Arturo Tello, are passionate about nature and committed to preserving local lands for wildlife, recreation, ranching and farming. Working with conservation groups and landowners, Oak Group artists record the beauty of these endangered landscapes to draw public attention and to help generate funds to protect them. To date, Oak Group sales of $3 million have supported these goals. A panel discussion featuring Oak Group artists will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 5 p.m., in SBCC Humanities Building, Room 111.

To earn permanent protection of the San Rafael Wilderness, local residents worked with members of Congress and conservation groups in Washington, D.C., laying the groundwork for citizen-based wilderness initiatives throughout the nation. Today, a half-century later, the San Rafael remains the largest permanently protected open space in Santa Barbara County, featuring landmarks like Hurricane Deck, Castle Rock, Manzana Creek, Sisquoc River and Big Pine Mountain.

This art exhibition is inspired by the words of famed naturalist Henry David Thoreau, who wrote “In wildness is the preservation of the world.” A portion of the proceeds from each painting sold will benefit Los Padres ForestWatch, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of wilderness, wildlife and clean water throughout the Los Padres National Forest, the Carrizo Plain National Monument and other public lands along California’s central coast.

Through legal and public advocacy, scientific collaboration, community outreach and volunteer field work, Los Padres ForestWatch promotes sustainable public access and protects local public lands from oil development, commercial logging and wildlife habitat degradation.

Atkinson Gallery is a learning laboratory that promotes visual literacy and critical thinking. The Gallery hosts contemporary art exhibitions featuring international, national, regional and student artists working in a wide range of styles and media.

The exhibition is sponsored in part by the Foundation for Santa Barbara City College. It will be on display from Jan. 25 through March 22, and can be seen during regular gallery hours noted on the website or by contacting the gallery for an appointment at (805) 897-3484.

Of his work, “The Fire Only Burns Away What You Are Not,” Mossman posted the following insight: “To me this painting and its title both describe the way we all go through experiences that at the time we believe may drown us… but the reality is those very experiences are there to cleanse us. Cleansing is a very different experience than drowning and the less you struggle with it, the easier it all becomes to allow its full power to change everything in your life.” Under rainy skies on Saturday, Jan. 12, patrons turned out to the show at Porch titled “You Are the Holiest Thing I Know.”

The class will give her valuable feedback. She could also join a writer’s group. Any criticism will be less hurtful and more helpful coming from others. Romance novels have a formula and are considered the easiest to

I was glad to help out, but they never moved. Now I just learned that he spent the money on a fancy tattoo. He looks like walking graffiti. They need you. Money is always a problem with young couples, plus they need to develop good communication skills.

Encourage both he and his wife to get credit counseling. It will help them learn to manage their money better. If you are mad about the lie, not the tattoo, make sure he understands that. Tattoos are very popular now, even among girls.

PHOTO BY AIMEE STANCHINA After reaching last year’s semifinals in the CIF-SS Playoffs and falling to eventual champion Oakwood, the Cate School girls basketball team moved from the Frontier League up to the ultra-competitive TriValley League (TVL) this season. Familiar foe and last season’s Frontier League champions Grace Brethren also joined the TVL, and the teams met on Cate Mesa on Saturday, Jan. 12. Both teams came into the game at 0-1 in the new league, but the Lancers used a suffocating full court press to get the jump on the Rams, taking a 19-9 halftime lead en route to a 46-24 win. Grace Brethren improved to 8-6 overall with the victory, while the Rams dropped to 3-5.

Under intense pressure from the Lancers from the start, Cate was able to keep pace at first, only trailing 10-7 at the end of the first quarter. Piper Brooks, Elle Smith and Lily Zanze each scored two, while Maya Blattberg knocked down a free throw to round out the quarter. “We played much better defense than we had been, so that was good,” said Rams coach Amy Venditta. But the Rams had difficulty handling Grace Brethren’s six-foot, one-inch center Aliya DiMuro who scored seven in the opening stanza.

The Lancers began to pull away in the second, as Abria Laue’s lay-in put her team up 17-7 with under four minutes left till the half. “Our layups didn’t fall, our free throws didn’t fall,” explained Venditta. Weekend rain could not dampen Carpinteria Aquatics Club (CAC) swimmers’ spirits as they competed in the Pleasant Valley Swim Team swim meet on Jan. 12 and 13. Carpinteria swimmers dropped swim times significantly in the meet, notably: Noah Morente, Malaya Morente, Duncan Otsuki, Davis Otsuki, Rylan Otsuki, Jacob Otsuki and Lili Nemetz. The Otsuki brothers Jacob, Rylan, Davis and Duncan put together a mixed relay team for the first-ever CAC Relay team, which the whole Carpinteria club celebrated as a special moment.

NEWLY ENGAGED? Dan Chamlee and his wife laurie Chamlee were in San Diego on Saturday Jan. 12 to receive top honors for the 2018 off-road racing season.

Chamlee wins 14th Class 7 Score Season Points Championship

Dan Chamlee and The Factory Racing of Carpinteria were honored for winning Class 7 Season Points Championship, winning 14 out of the last 15 years. The awards presentation was held Saturday, Jan. 12, at the San Diego Air and Space Museum.

Chamlee was also honored for winning the Milestone Award, given to teams who complete every mile of every race of the season. Out of 1,002 entries, only a total of 43 racers completed all 1,802.68 required miles in the four-race 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship.

The season started in San Felipe, Mexico with a fourth place finish. The team had been running up near the front, but suffered an oil fire late in the race requiring repairs and costing the team a few positions. June’s 50th Annual Baja 500 brought a second place finish for Chamlee. A later win at the Lucerna Desert Challenge put Chamlee in a one-point lead position for the points championship. Chamlee and The Factory Racing team went on to win “the granddaddy of them all,” the Baja 1000, securing the points championship.

Chamlee’s team consists of co-drivers Kurt Kimball, Amy Tate, Stephanie Chamlee and Dave Owens, and crew leader Laurie Chamlee, along with many volunteers.

January 9 – The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team beat Santa Paula by a score of 72-42. Noah Nuño lead the Warriors in scoring with 19 points, Jose Suarez had 17 and eight rebounds, and Dylan O’Neill knocked down 12. “We played well, shared the ball on offense and shot well,” said Carpinteria coach Corey Adam.

The Warriors won all four quarters by outscoring the Cardinals in each one, leading at the half by a score of 32-17. “We’ve been really out of sync the past few games, but the boys worked hard in practice and really focused on the little things like boxing out to pull ourselves together,” explained Adam. The win puts Carpinteria at 2-1 in the Citrus Coast League and 7-11 overall.

January 11 – The Carpinteria High School basketball team beat Malibu 5441. Dylan O’Neill led the team and bench with 15, Myles Morgan chipped in 12 off the bench also—all in the 2nd half and Noah Nuño finished with 11. “In addition to those scorers, Caleb Nangle played solid defense off the bench to help hold the lead,” said Warriors coach Corey Adam. Carpinteria led by no less than five the entire way, stretching the lead to 15 a few times, but never really pulled away. “I’m really proud of my bench guys, we had to play about a six-minute stretch in the third and fourth period with our three starting guards on the bench in foul trouble,” explained Adam.

The win moves Carpinteria to 8-11 and 3-1 in league.

January 9 – The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team played to a 3-3 tie against Nordhoff after 90 minutes of soccer. The Rangers took the lead in the 13th minute of the game, and it remained 1-0 going into the half. Determined to defend their home field, the Warriors scored three unanswered goals from three different players in the second half in the 43rd , 54th and 62nd minutes to go up 3-1 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. “Two defensive mistakes led to a Ranger comeback to tie the game in a span of four minutes,” said Carpinteria coach Leo Quintana. “Our young men played with guts tonight, and I applaud them for their valiant effort,” added Quintero. Carpinteria got goals from Cristian Flores and Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson, along with brother Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson. Assist credits go to Saul Hernandez, Rafael Lopez and Adrain Gonzalez. The Warriors’ League record is 1-2-1 with an overall record 4-6-2.

January 11 – The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team played to a 1-1 tie versus Santa Paula. Santa Paula possessed much of the first half, scoring in the 14th minute. “With the season on the line for the Warriors who entered the game with a league record of 1-2-1, regrouped at halftime,” said Carpinteria coach Leo Quintero. In the 60th minute, Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson scored off an assist from brother Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson. Freshman keeper Brian Garcia had eight saves on the night. “We tell our boys that any game versus Santa Paula always has a playoff feel to it, and tonight was just that,” added Quintero.

The Warriors’ Citrus Coast League record is 1-2-2, and overall record is 4-6-3.

Girls basketball

January 12 – The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team lost a Citrus Coast League game to Santa Paula, 72-17.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 21-2 first quarter lead. Santa Paula is currently in second place in the League standings, while Hueneme holds the top spot.

Meanwhile, the Warriors are hovering at the bottom of the pack.

January 10 – The Cate School boys soccer team opened 2019 with their first Tri-Valley League win, knocking off the Foothill Tech squad, 2-0 at Ventura College Stadium. The Rams got on the board in the 14th minute when freshman Daniel Boateng beat his defender on the wing well above the penalty box, and unloaded a shot from 25 yards that

The tie moved the Rams to 4-4-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in league play.

Cate suffered its first Frontier League loss to drop to 7-2 (2-1) against rival Thacher who is now 1-2 in League in a game played at Thacher. “Credit to Thacher for playing hard-nosed, physical basketball and beating us up on the boards,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. Ethan Ng led the Rams with seven points.

Southeast storm winds ruffle the waters of Carpinteria Creek on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Although lighter than forecast, the wind and rain of Tuesday, Jan. 15, was enough to crack apart the longlived pine tree in the 4000 block of Carpinteria Ave.

L I S A O ’ R E I L LY Two days after Christmas, my dad and I traveled up the hill and through the woods to spend the afternoon at his sister’s in Wrightwood. This was where my aunt and uncle raised their 11 children, in a home that perennially overflowed with excitement. Each time I step through the door I’m welcomed with an embrace of happy memories.

This visit had unexpected surprises.

My aunt presented me with the gift of a gorgeous quilt, handmade by my second great aunt, Mary Miller Meyer. Since Aunt Mary was born in 1851, it’s no leap to guess that the quilt is at least 100 years old, but it’s in fabulous condition and I’m honored to now be the caretaker of this family heirloom.

My dad’s brother, his son and daughter-in-law joined us for this mini-reunion, and my uncle brought along a pot-full of their Grandpa Mike’s famous thick and meaty spaghetti sauce. My aunt made the bread and pasta, and had the serving platter that was used during all the Sunday family meals of their youth, and we all convened at the long table in the kitchen and enjoyed our meal.

My uncle also brought photo albums filled with pictures I had never seen before—my dad, aunt and uncle as children, and my grandparents as young adults.

Laughter and stories unfolded—my grandmother running over her foot with her own car, a boyfriend sneaking in through my uncle’s window for a visit with my aunt.

Too soon, Dad and I left Wrightwood and made it home in time for a quick change before walking two doors down the street to my grandparents’ house for our next social engagement. My grandparents built the house in 1972 when my grandfather retired, and once they moved in we commenced wearing grooves in the street, parading back and forth for the next 41 years. After my grandmother died in 2013 the time came to sell the house,

but stars aligned and an old family friend became the new owner. Some things were meant to be.

Comfortable in a chair in a corner of the beautifully remodeled kitchen, I talked with old and new friends, but couldn’t ignore the voices I heard, the ones I’ll forever hear each time I’m there. I sat where my family spent countless evenings at Gramma and Grampa’s table, passing heavy platters of food while Gramma paced from table to stove, making sure the potato dumplings didn’t boil over, cursing in Czech when she didn’t make it in time. This same spot, where Grampa taught me and my siblings to play cribbage, and Gramma routinely beat us all

After fortifying ourselves with food, a few beverages and a heaping dose of false bravado against the 30-degree temperature, my current company and I made our way to the lower part of the backyard to take up places around the new fire pit.

To get there, we used the rock steps my grandfather made long ago—his first big project after moving in—and I had to confess, I couldn’t help feeling a measure of pride in how perfect those steps were.

I have no doubt they will outlast us all.

It was while gathered around the fire pit that it struck me. Maybe it was from the stories shared, and the laughter ringing in the cold night air, but I realized the greatest warmth was not coming from the fire. I flashed on these last 16 months since my family suffered a devastating loss, and being in these two homes again reminded me what has kept us going.
