State Park Interpretive Specialist Leanne Roth and Suzie Gonzales lead a line dance of as part of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony for the new boardwalk at Carpinteria State Beach on Oct. 27.

A total of 1,720 feet of boardwalk now provides easy pedestrian and wheelchair access to the dune area just east of Linden Avenue, while protecting the sensitive habitat from being trampled. Built in two phases, construction began in the fall of 2015 as a collaborative project between the state Department of Parks and Recreation and the California Conservation Corps, funded by a Proposition 84 Nature Education Facilities grant and a grant from the Environmental BILL SWING Enhancement and Mitigation Program.

David Jay trades radio for car sales

Long-time Carpinterian David J. Galipeau recently joined the sales team at Santa Barbara Nissan, located at 425 S. Kellogg Ave. in Goleta. Galipeau, who went by “David Jay” while he was on-the-air, served as a local radio and TV broadcaster for over a quarter century for stations like KRUZ, KTMS and KEYT. He held on-air positions as a disk jockey, host and news anchor, and his off-air positions included commercial production director and news director. His voice continues to be featured in radio and television commercials as well as corporate videos.

League presents immigration forum

The League of Women Voters will host a forum about the status of immigration in Santa Barbara County on Wednesday, Nov. 15, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Santa Barbara Public Library’s Faulkner Gallery, located at 40 East Anapamu Street in Santa Barbara.

The League takes the position that immigration policies should promote reunification of immediate families; meet economic, business and employment needs of the United States; and be responsive to those facing political persecution or humanitarian crises. The forum’s invited speakers are Frank Rodriguez, Santa Barbara Organizer of CAUSE; Diane Martinez, Director of Immigrant Hope; Bill Brown, Sheriff-Coroner of Santa Barbara County; and Marcos Vargas, Executive Director of Fund for Santa Barbara. The free forum is handicapped accessible and will be translated in Spanish at TVSB and LWVSB websites.

4-H wins prize for creative scarecrow

The clever and crafty members of Playa Del Sur 4-H represented Carpinteria at Farm Supply Company’s 2017 Scarecrow Fest in Buellton on Oct. 7 and came away with a fourth-place prize. The group designed and constructed a Dia de los Muertosthemed scarecrow that was displayed and voted on by store customers. Farm Supply stores throughout Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties invited 4-H and FFA groups to create scarecrows and compete for gift cards at each store. The Playa Del Sur scarecrow received a $100 gift card for its fourth-place finish.

Morning Rotary steps in tar history

Carpinteria State Beach Interpretive Specialist Leanne Roth presented the early history of Carpinteria Beach with the focus on “asphaltum,” or tar. Tar, as well as oil and coal, was created over 300 million years ago by pressure on diatoms, or algae.

Lions vision screen 709 local students

Over the last week, 709 local students were vision screened by members of the Carpinteria Lions Club. Of the students tested at Aliso, Canalino, Summerland, Carpinteria Middle and Carpinteria High schools, 87 were referred for additional testing by a professional. Sixty-two of these local kids with vision issues were not already wearing glasses. Co-chairing the annual project are Past President Doug Treloar and Lion Stan Graber, and assisting are Past Presidents Randy Graham and Ron Tito and Lions Jane Bianchin, David Conway, Martha Hickey, Hank Arellanes, Robert Shroll and Michael Avery, along with Millie Graber and Donna Treloar. Lions use a SPOT Vision Screener, purchased in 2015 with the help of a grant from Lions Club International Fund, to conduct its annual screening. The equipment allows most classes to be screened in under 15 minutes, where the older Snellen eye Chart required up to 45 minutes per class. The SPOT instantly detects major vision issues including myopia and astigmatism.

Zilliotto honored for dedication

Carpinteria Lion John Ziliotto, who serves as the club’s ambassador to the City of Hope, was honored for his dedication during the club’s 90th Charter Anniversary Dinner earlier this month.

Budget alarms sound early in school year

Carpinteria Unified School District is already running $1 million short for the 2017-2018 school year, according to Superintendent Diana Rigby, who delivered the bad news at the Oct. 24 school board meeting. The district had anticipated a rocky road ahead for this school year and beyond, and to maintain vigilance it upped the frequency of budget reports to monthly. It was sudden and unexpected but she had been experiencing some health issues in recent years. She was born in San Francisco and raised in Camarillo and Oxnard. She leaves us all her lessons and her life as an example of joy, positive attitude and youthful, sassy exuberance. She was the ultra-proud, bad-ass warrior mother of five children – Kevin John, Michael Kristian (Nicole), Kelly Ann, Stephen Matthew and Patrick Thomas (Torrey). She raised them as a graceful and tough single parent. All of her children are college graduates, and two are lawyers! Caltrans gifts to Summerland

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s As to be expected, there’s a considerable gap between improvements (mitigations) Summerland would like and what we would actually get from Caltrans in return for laying two more freeway lanes in our front yard. I missed the important Summerland Citizens Association meeting on the subject last month but managed to round up the gist.

We put forward the bold notion that it would be convenient, practical and forward looking to build a beach access from town over or under the expanded freeway. Currently the freeway underpass at one end of town provides the only beach access.

I imagine the idea was probably greeted by silent hoots from the presenters at the meeting. Actually, there was one main presenter—Matt Dobbersteen, an engineering guy from county Public Works.

Also there were Darcel Elliott from Das Williams’ office and Gregg Hart from SBCAG, which is partnering with Caltrans on what is formally known as the Santa Barbara U.S. 101 Multimodal Corridor.

Dobbersteen explained that a pedestrian tunnel under the freeway would run around $50 million, which is the projected cost to build a pedestrian-bike tunnel in Goleta. A bridge over the lanes would be about $15 million, the major obstacle (aside from the cost) being the need to acquire large bits of land for ramps to make the thing ADA acceptable. Okay, scratch that one off the list.

Maps presented by Dobbersteen showed the three transportation corridors that Caltrans will be working on for the next few years. He said the Ventura to Carpinteria section was actually a year ahead of schedule, which means the Summerland portion (Carpinteria to Ortega Ridge) is coming up sooner than expected. One piece of pretty good news was that the new freeway lanes will be built in the middle, so the traffic stream won’t be any wider, just denser.

There was a lot of talk about bike paths.

A grand ambition exists to create a continuous coastal bike path from Canada to Mexico. So there was some interest in creating a Class 1 path (separated from the road), from Santa Claus to Evans to connect with the Ortega path beside the freeway. Engineering studies found this was probably impossible. Just not enough room—unless Union Pacific was willing to allow the use of some of its right-ofway. Which will never, ever happen.

Summerland already has a Class 2 bike

path through town (lines marked alongside the road but not physically separated from it). The possibility arose for a Class 1 bike lane alongside Via Real where there was more space, so maybe that will eventually happen. From what I could tell the bike path issue kind of blended into Summerland’s request for a bluff-top trail from Lookout to Loon Point. That, too, was nixed due to insufficient space and the railroad never relinquishing so much as an inch for a right of way.

We’d also suggested a low stone wall through town alongside the freeway— more decorative than the current cyclone fence and possibly beneficial for stopping some of the particulate pollutants thrown up by traffic. My understanding was that it was kind of glossed over, but maybe it’s still in the works.

The one thing Summerland is sure to get is beautification of the underpass into town. This western door to Summerland is currently a homely, fenced cement passageway. Evidently the overpass is already wide enough to accept the two new lanes, so it won’t be rebuilt. A fix to make it more attractive would probably be easy and inexpensive. My husband Roger suggests planting some trees down there that would grow up between the freeway lanes. Now there’s a thought!

How about a redwood?

It’s been a long hard haul to keep the county moving on freeing up more space for Lookout Park users to enjoy. Two trailers for park hosts have been occupying the largest and most coveted view space in the small park for the last 10 years.

Now county parks has pretty much completed the construction of a new host parking space at the opposite (upper) end of the park, and the host will be able to vacate his current location soon. The attractive new space, with a cement pad for a trailer or RV, already has a new storage shed, a border fence and plantings.

The next challenge will be to clean up the newly opened area and ready it for improvement. Jill Van Wie, project manager overseeing the county’s plan development, is set to present suggestions and visuals for the SCA to review at its November meeting.

After receiving citizen input, the project will commence the usual circuit through formal plan development, bid process, contract award, etc., which should take all spring. Suzy Cawthon, who has been the SCA lead on this, predicts (fingers crossed) that the new space could be available for public use sometime next summer.

Goleta developer eyes a trickle of Carpinteria’s State Water

The Carpinteria Valley Water District has another nibble for State Water on its line. Ocean Meadows, a 38-unit residential development planned for Goleta, is seeking 18 Acre Feet a year, a small portion of Carpinteria’s 2,000 AF annual allotment that goes mostly unused.

CVWD boardmembers voted 3-0 (with Matt Roberts and Polly Holcombe absent) on Oct. 25 to approve the first step of negotiations toward a contract with Ocean Meadows. Carpinteria secured its super-sized portion of the State Water Project in the early 1990s at the peak of a severe drought and when more growth was anticipated for the Valley. Nearly 30 years later, the contract still holds, binding the district to over $3 million annually before a drop of water is even used. The district has long sought to offload a portion of those costs, and though several interested developers have approached CVWD for a slice of its State Water commitment, none has yet signed a deal.

Goleta’s moratorium on new water meters stands in the way of the Ocean Meadows development, which was in the works before the city restricted new water use. Developer Jack Theimer, who represents the property owners, told the water board members that then property owner Mark Green was battling lung cancer as the drought progressed and Goleta moved to restrict water use. “He thought he had water,” Theimer said. “He never even questioned it.”

Green died shortly after the moratorium; his family members are now trying to secure water rights to build the project hinging on new water. CVWD Boardmember Shirley Johnson noted that if the project were egregiously large or unacceptable to the community, she may oppose supporting it with Carpinteria’s water, but as a relatively small project in a city tolerant to growth she didn’t feel it was her place to judge the merits of the development.

“The existing water supply is not sufficient. This is really the driver for the project,” CVWD General Manager Bob McDonald told his board members as he presented arguments in favor of a recycled water project that CVWD and the Carpinteria Sanitary District have researched over the last couple years.

The project being considered involves cleaning Carpinteria’s wastewater at the Sanitary District plant, then storing it by injecting it into the groundwater basin at a rate of 1,100 AF per year.

In typical years, Carpinteria’s water demand is about 4,500 AF, and its supply of about 5,500 AF is made up of water from Lake Cachuma, groundwater and State Water. Though the Cachuma flow dwindled to almost nothing in the drought, the lake normally supplies about 70 percent of Carpinteria’s water.

McDonald told the board that new pressures on supply, such as increased Cachuma releases for endangered steelhead trout, are likely to reduce water availability by 20 percent or more. That puts supply and demand on the same level and leaves little to no buffer for drought years or other unexpected impacts. Recycled water, McDonald said, could mean the difference between adequate supply and water shortage.

Halos Pitchforks

On Oct. 19 at approximately 5 p.m. employees of a service station on Carpinteria Avenue called Sheriff’s deputies because they saw a man parked in the parking lot who they believed was highly intoxicated. When a deputy arrived he saw a man sitting in a pick-up truck, and when he approached he noted a smell of alcohol coming from the man. The deputy also reported that the man’s shorts were unzipped and pulled down to the middle of his thighs. The man said he had had two beers earlier in the day.

When the deputy asked the 55-year-old man to step out of his vehicle, he noted that he had to use the side of the truck to keep himself steady. Based on the man’s symptoms of intoxication the deputy arrested him. The service station owner said he did not want the vehicle left on his property, and since deputies could not find the key to secure the vehicle (the reporting deputy noted a surfboard among the man’s possessions) they had the truck towed. The man was taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

No lights, dilated pupils

On Oct. 19 at approximately 8:40 p.m. deputies stopped a man for riding a bike with no lights. The reporting deputy’s partner told him that the 55-year-old man would not look at him, but the deputy nevertheless noticed that the man’s pupils were dilated, which made him suspect that the man was on meth. The man said that he was not on drugs, then later said he had taken “a couple tokes” of marijuana earlier in the afternoon and that he had “eaten a point” of methamphetamine that day around 11:30 a.m.

The man was taken to the Carpinteria sub-station where he submitted a urine sample and was found to have tested positive for meth use. He was cited and released for being under the influence of a controlled substance and for riding a bike with no lights at night.

Funny money

On Oct. 21 at approximately 10:40 p.m. a 19-year-old man was arrested at a fast food restaurant on Casitas Pass Road for attempting to pay for his food with a counterfeit $20 bill. The restaurant

manager said that the young man had used counterfeit bills three times previously, and the manager wanted to press charges because he said that he did not want people to think they could take advantage of him just because they know him, according to the deputy’s report.

The 19-year-old said that he did not know the money he used was counterfeit, and that the $20 he had used at the fast food place was from a friend who bought a bike from him and paid with the bill.

The man was arrested and taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Sleeping it off

On Oct. 23 at approximately 10:15 a.m. deputies responded to a report of homeless people blocking an entrance at the rear of the Carpinteria Library. Two code compliance officers were speaking with two apparently homeless men when deputies arrived. One of the homeless men was sitting in the bushes, and a deputy called out to him asking if he was OK. The man could not hold himself up, and two deputies held him steady by the arms. The man had a strong smell of alcohol coming from his person and could not care for himself, so the reporting deputy placed him under arrest and transported the man to the Santa Barbara County Jail.

Have to find a new drop spot

On Oct. 24 at approximately 3:15 p.m. a deputy was dispatched to Tomol Drive on a report of a found package of suspected methamphetamine. A woman reported that her adult daughter found a baggie of what appeared to be crystal methamphetamine on the corner of Tomol Drive and Nipomo Drive. The woman said that they had found a similar package at the same corner three months previously.

The baggie held 3.1 grams of a substance that later tested positive as meth; it had the appearance broken glass. The drugs were “booked for destruction” according to the reporting deputy, who also noted that the women said they did not have any idea of who could have left the drugs at the corner.

Printmaking for the Holidays

The Carpinteria Arts Center, 855 Linden Ave., will offer a holiday workshop for anyone ages 8 through adults (parent/child pairs are welcome, too) on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants will use Inovart Foam Plates to create templates and block printing ink to make their own unique greeting cards. Holiday cards will be the theme of the workshop, but any style of card can be made.

Jessica Clark weaves together these important parts of life so skillfully you can’t tell where one ends and another begins.

Clark and her husband own two restaurants in Carpinteria—Corktree Cellars and Peebee & Jay’s—and also are partners in Rincon Brewery. Through their businesses, they support a wide variety of good causes. The Clarks have two children, and this active mom is president of the parent organization at their school.

She also makes time for other groups including Club Kind, which, as its name suggests, spreads kindness to others.

The community recognizes Clark’s many contributions. She was a Girls Inc. Woman of Inspiration in 2008, and two years later the Chamber of Commerce named her Small Business Owner of the Year.

Here’s a closer look at Clark’s activities: On Nov. 19, Corktree Cellars will have its annual wine tasting event. What type of fundraiser is this?

We hold a wine tasting every November, and each year we donate at least $1,200 to a different group. Last year it was the local food bank, the year before that, Canalino School. This year it will be Club Kind. We provide a beautiful spread of tapas, 70 wines to taste and wines for sale at a heavily discounted price. (See information below to make reservations.)

You also contribute to Carpinteria Education Foundation and Girls Inc. How do you help those groups?

We donate to Carpinteria Education Foundation fundraisers, and both restaurants take part in Dine Out for Carp Kids. That means on the third Wednesday of every month, we donate 10 percent of profits to CEF. I’ve been involved in Girls Inc. since I was growing up. (It was called the Girls Club and located on Maple Avenue then.) Being a Woman of Inspiration reintroduced me to it. I support scholarships for summer programs and donate to the Evening in Bloom fundraiser. One package included tapas and tequila for 40 people.

I started Club Kind about seven years ago. It’s a really casual group that figures out who in the community needs an act of kindness. Everybody brings whatever money they want to donate—$5, $100, mostly $20 each. Maybe someone doesn’t need monetary help but just needs to know someone is thinking about them.

We still use the money to let them know we care.

We’ve planted a tree in memory of someone who passed away, sent a mother and daughter to spa for a day and bought a homeless man a new backpack and art supplies.

The group stopped meeting for a while, but my friend Kristin Phillips has taken the lead again.

You’re also president of the board for the parent organization at the Early Learning Center at Cate School. What does that entail?

We facilitate all the fundraisers. We support teachers and coordinate parent giving if the school or a teacher needs something. We also do a beautification day and put on a fundraising event called Tractors, Trucks and Trolleys.

You closely connect with others who also volunteer. Please tell a little more about that.

First and foremost, I value being surrounded by people like my family. One thing that attracted me to my husband, Kevin, was the fact that he was always the first one to volunteer his services when someone needed something. I’m also really fortunate to have other caring people around me including Bunni Lesh, Marybeth Carty, Geri Carty, Tina Frontado, Toni Thompson, Jessica Isaac, Nikki Yamaoka and my sister, Jamie Persoon.

What first influenced you to volunteer?

My parents were heavily involved in all aspects of our schooling. My dad was involved in the Booster Club, and mom volunteered in the classroom and went on field trips. They were always really present at school and in the community, and my sister is very involved in the community as principal at Canalino School.

Also, when my first husband passed away, I received a lot of support from others. To be born and raised here, and to have people support my family and our kids, it’s important for me to keep that fabric woven and rich.

Photos by Robin KaRlsson A year into Caltrans’ massive overhaul of Carpinteria roads, the agency opened the first new component of what will be many over the next couple years. Early on the morning of Nov. 1, crews shifted northbound lanes of Highway 101 onto the newly constructed highway bridge and opened the new Casitas Pass Road northbound offramp.

“This ramp is opening really early,” said Caltrans spokesperson Kirsten Ayars. “We had planned to open it next year.”

The rapid pace of the multi-faceted project is both surprising and welcomed.

Last week, the agency announced that it was a year ahead of schedule on construction, which positions the project for completion in 2019 instead of 2020.

Creek work, which is legally limited to the dry season, is a major element of the project. By speeding up work during this dry season, Caltrans was able to plan work for the next dry season that was initially expected for the following year. Creative scheduling along with contractor incentives to increase work hours and workers, has resulted in the revised timeline and the early opening of components like this week’s bridge and off-ramp. Caltrans supervisor Jason Kline, who has worked for the agency for over 10 years, said that shortening a schedule that significantly is nearly unprecedented.

The next stage of Carpinteria Creek bridge construction will be to demolish and replace the former highway bridges.

The two new sections will be combined, and when the final phase of freeway widening begins, the new, wider bridges will be reconfigured into three lanes each.

The northbound onramp at Casitas Pass Road will be constructed just west of the offramp that opened this week.

ramp is constructed. Its new positioning requires more space below the overpass than the existing bridge provides. Until that portion can open, the existing Casitas Pass Road onramp, located near Vallecito Road, will remain open.

Another major element of the project is the “punch-through” of Via Real over Carpinteria Creek. That bridge is nearly complete as well, but its timeline for opening is yet to be announced. When the project is finished, Via Real will extend to Linden Avenue.

Ultimately, a stoplight will be installed at the intersection where the northbound Casitas Pass Road on- and off-ramps meet Via Real. Additional stoplights will go in on each side of the Casitas overpass.

Creek work must wrap up soon; the season can be extended to December only if significant rains aren’t anticipated. To prepare the area, which is now a construction zone, a temporary pipeline for water to flow beneath the work area will be removed.

I wonder who would risk repeated arrests and jail time to collect rare books you can’t display? Especially ones you don’t plan to read because there are many more to “pick up.”

Author Allison Hoover Bartlett falls down the rabbit hole in her search for the answer to these questions.

It’s scary that Bartlett, a staunch reporter, could be captivated by a con man, who indeed is a con past, present and, most likely, future.

Years of research involved interviews with the thief (who never lacks justifications for his acts), book and antique dealers, police, detectives, librarians and book fairs throughout widespread cities. These book thieves work around the world.

Book thieves are on par with dictators and religious zealots: removing a book from circulation is taking out chunks of our civilization.

that. I would like to believe that some few individuals can and do transform their love to universal love, but it is so very hard to remain there at all times while interacting with so many others. Even so, all of this is a clear reminder and example to me of how important and how strong our need is for healing through our pets.

Cate tennis swings strong through post-season

While the Cate School boys tennis team had an impressive run in last year’s CIF Division III playoffs, the Rams’ girls team has been quietly enjoying its own success. Last week, the Cate coeds captured their third consecutive Tri-Valley League title with a 16-2 victory over Malibu.

For Rams coach Trevor Thorpe, the program’s recent success has evolved as a result of a multi-year process. Thorpe noted that the girls tennis team, with a pool of only 270 students at the school to choose from, is the only Cate sports program to compete at CIF’s Division I level. “I think our girls team has really created their own identity in the last four years,” said Cate coach Trevor Thorpe, who’s been involved with Rams tennis for nine years and head coach of the team for about half that time.

During the team’s three-year reign as Tri-Valley League Champs, the Rams have gone 36-3 with their only three losses coming at the hands of San Marcos.

Hand in hand with the squad’s dominance have been some outstanding individual performances. The doubles team of sophomore Carol Cai and junior Sarah Polowczak went undefeated this season.

“Carol’s never lost a doubles match at Cate. She went undefeated last year, and she’s gone undefeated this year,” said Thorpe. Last year Cai teamed with her older sister, senior Jackie Cai, to take the Tri-Valley League doubles title, and the sisters just repeated the feat last week.

Ram sophomore Grace Fuss went 23-0 in singles this year, only to fall in the finals of the TVL Individuals this year and last. But despite some minor setbacks, with only two seniors, three juniors (two in the starting lineup), two sophomores

The Rams participated in their first CIF Division I playoff match earlier in the week, hosting Mira Costa with the result coming after this edition’s deadline.

Cate’s sports program as a whole has recently received some high accolades.

Polowczak, who also plays basketball and runs track, recently took home the

Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award for the school. And long-time boys tennis coach Bob Bonning (who coached the girls team earlier in his Cate career) was also inducted into the CIF Southern Section’s Hall of Fame this month. “(Bonning’s) definitely been a big part of tennis being a strong thing on campus,” said Thorpe. “It definitely gives us a historical framework to work from.”

“The standout moment (this season) for me was when we lost that match to San Marcos,” he said. “Our captains Janet Cai and Janice Ng came to me and said, ‘Hey, we need to do better; we’ve noticed we’ve been getting too relaxed in practice and want you to step it up,’” said Thorpe. And it looks as though the Rams girls tennis team will continue to climb the ladder.

Warrior win over Fillmore puts league title within reach

Jumping out to a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter at Fillmore, the Carpinteria High School football team outlasted the Flashes en route to a 56-26 Frontier League win for the Warriors’ fourth victory in a row. The result pits Carpinteria against Santa Clara Friday night in a matchup in Oxnard, with the winner capturing the league title.

Leo Vargas opened the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown run to the put the Warriors up 7-0 near the five-minute mark of the first quarter. It would be one of five touchdowns on the evening for Vargas. CHS added a second score when quarterback Vance Keiser hit Terrell Richardson for a short touchdown toss to put Carpinteria up 14-0 at the end of the second. Keiser would end up throwing for five touchdowns for the game with Richardson on the receiving end on two of those scores.

Vargas ran 32-yards then pulled in a 50-yard reception to put the Warriors up another two touchdowns at 28-0. Fillmore finally got on the scoreboard with about five minutes left in the half on a 5-yard touchdown pass play to make it 28-6.

Carpinteria tacked on another touchdown via the air to take a 35-6 lead at halftime.

“Our offensive line had its best game of the year,” said Warrior coach Rick Candaele. “It takes a little while, but it seems like they’re starting to catch on to what we’re trying to do,” he added.

The Warriors continued the onslaught on a 29-yard touchdown run by Vargas to make it 42-6 in the third. But the Flashes refused to quit, connecting on another scoring pass to make it 42-12. Keiser then found Jacob Mata for another touchdown pass for a 49-12 lead near the midway point of the quarter. However, Fillmore added two more touchdowns, one on a pick-six, allowing the Flashes to cut the lead to 49-26 early in the fourth.

Vargas’ final touchdown run, a 29-yarder, put an exclamation point on the win, which gives the team a shot at a league championship. Carpinteria’s last league title, clinched in 2002, also came with a CIF Championship. At that point, the coach’s hat was worn by Coley Candaele, son of the current coach Rick.

First place in the Frontier League will be decided this Friday night at Santa Clara with the kickoff at 7 p.m.

October 31 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team traveled south to face-off against Hillcrest Christian in the first round of the CIF playoffs, sweeping the Saints, 3-0 with match scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-11. “The Warriors’ hitting power and defense was too much to handle for the Saints,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. Outside hitter Jenny Alaniz had seven kills, four aces and one block. Middle blocker Shaya Alexander ended the night with six kills and three blocks. Starting setter Yaneli Silva provided 17 assists and four digs. Carpinteria moves onto round two.

Boys water polo

October 31 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team swam away with a 10-7 win over San Luis Obispo at the Carpinteria Community Pool in the first round of the Division V playoffs. Senior Wyatt Stevenson scored two goals, while juniors Luke Nahooikiaka-Anderson and Ali Hamadi also netted two. The Warriors were down 3-0 during the first quarter then came back to tie it up 3-3. SLO pulled away right before halftime, making it 6-3. The Warriors came back to tie it up, and then take the lead during the third quarter. “We took a few bad shots, but I have never seen my boys play so consistently as a team in a game before,” said Carpinteria coach Matt Organista.

Cate School

October 26 - The Cate School cross country team competing at the Santa Barbara County Championships in Lompoc, won three individual medals, beating a number of county schools. The girls finished fourth in an eight-team field, the highest placing for Cate in a number of years. The Rams were led by senior Isabela Montes de Oca who won a medal for finishing fourth overall in 19:19. Junior co-captain Bella Hillyer also medaled, taking 14th in 20:55, followed by freshman Jolea Moes in 28th at 21:43 and Ari Sterling in 22:32. On the boys side, the Rams finished 10th in a 14-team field with sophomore Tesfa Asmara vaulting into the ninth spot all-time for a Cate runner at River Park with a time of 17:03, good for 20th place and a medal. Senior Ian MacFarlane was 45th in 17:49, followed by junior Josh Shields (60th in 17:58), freshman Josh Rokoine (61st in 18:01) and junior Abnner Olivares (68th in 18:49).

October 27 - Undefeated Cate sophomore Grace Fuss was taken down in a threehour battle with junior Tiara Nourishad of La Reina for the TVL Singles Title. Fuss came back from a set down to take the lead 5-3 in the third set. “The loss today was a bit of a surprise, because Grace has beaten Tiara a number of times, but she seemed to handle it OK,” said Rams coach Trevor Thorpe. In an All-Cate TVL doubles final, sisters Jackie and Carol Cai beat their peers and teammates Sarah Polowczak and Janice Ng, 6-1, 6-0. All five Cate players will continue to play in the CIF Individuals on Monday, Nov. 20.

Rams clinch football victory with 49 seconds left

BY CATE SCHOOL STAFF Another thrilling chapter to the storied sports history between Cate School and Thacher unfolded on Oct. 28 as the host Rams took down the visiting Toads from Ojai by a 33-28 margin. The win wraps up Cate’s regular season with a 5-3 record.

Cate got on the board early in the first quarter when junior Jack Deardorff snuck through the goal line on a 1-yard run. In what would be the theme on this afternoon, Thacher answered back, this time with a 6-yard touchdown in the second quarter. The next Ram touchdown came just before halftime when Deardorff found senior Will Bowlin on a 20-yard strike. At the half, the Rams were ahead 13-8.

After trading third quarter scores (Cate’s coming on a run from junior Drew Anastasio), the teams provided a thrilling final frame to the fans in attendance. The Rams turned to Anastasio again after the Toads took the lead early in the fourth quarter. With just inside three minutes left, the Toads pounded the ball in the end zone to go up 28-27.

With their backs against the wall, the Cate squad rallied. A great kick return from freshman William Deardorff put the Rams in great field position. The Cate offense was methodical on the final drive, picking up yards in chunks.

The Rams capped off the drive and the scoring for the day with a 6-yard run from Deardorff with 49 seconds left.

The Cate defense made big plays when the team needed it. Juniors Carson Williams and Ethan Cassulo, along with seniors Eric Yi and Chris Bennett, played well up front, highlighted by a game-clinching sack from Williams.

Senior Patrick Armstrong was solid up the middle for the Rams and provided a steady presence on defense.

“You can always throw the records out the window when we get together with Thacher,” said Cate assistant coach Dave Soto. “Games are always close, well-played and spirited, which is exactly what we saw today.” Soto’s father Ben has headed the program since its return to the field in 2005. The Rams now move onto the CIF-Southern Section playoffs with the pairings yet to be announced.

October 26 – The Cate School girls tennis team had a number of players compete in the Tri-Valley League Individual Championships last week. Cate’s Grace Fuss, who finished the regular season a perfect 23-0 in Tri-Valley League singles play, advanced to the league finals for the second time in two seasons. Last year as a freshman, she lost to senior Sophie Aulicino from La Reina. In doubles, defending TVL champions Jackie and Carol Cai advanced to the finals by defeating Thacher’s number-two team, 6-0, 6-1. The Cai sisters will face their teammates Sarah Polowczak and Janice Ng in an All-Cate final, after the pair defeated Thacher’s number-ones, 6-3, 6-0. Cate was

The Carp United 16/19u girls wrapped up an undefeated regular season with a 5-0 win over South Oxnard on Oct. 28. The team finished in first place in the AYSO Southern Inter-Regional circuit with a 10-0 record and secured an automatic invite to the Section Championship Tournament in Bakersfield over the weekend of Nov. 11 and 12.

In Carp United’s 10 matches, they team scored an impressive 75 goals and and only allowed four. Now their sights are set on the Section Championship tournament and representing Carpinteria as well as the rest of Area 10W. “We are extremely proud of what our young ladies have accomplished so far this season. We have a young and talented squad that averages 13.5 years of age and is participating in the 16/19U circuit. The girls are looking forward to participating in this tournament and to the competition we’ll be facing, as it’ll be a true test to see where we really are as a team. This group of young ladies did a great good of meshing right away and that has been the key to our success this season,” said coach Jorge Reynoso.

Marilyn Jenkins and Gerald Lubeck recently returned from a 10-day journey through Wales and Ireland, having brought their CVN along too. Highlights included Cardiff Castle, the Ring of Kerry Tour, the Ha’ Penny Bridge, the Jameson Whisky Tour, Galway’s Spanish Arch and the Dublin Jail. Jenkins and Lubeck were released on their own recognizance. They also enjoyed two rail trips—the first on the Great Western Railway from London to Cardiff, and the second on Irish Rail from Dublin to Killarney.

Having dedicated 364 days since the last pumpkin-carving contest to perfecting their squash sculpting skills, commit t ed carvers toting knives, drills and carefully selected pumpkins descended on the field of competition at Island Brewing Company on the afternoon of Oct. 28.

Pulp flew, sweat dripped and garbage cans filled with orange flesh as the artists transformed their round canvases into masterpieces of all shapes and sizes.

And after judges had analyzed all aspects of the final products, the Best in Show award went to Donette Hicks, who rewrote the rules of pumpkin carving by turning her squash lid into a palm tree canopy shading a tropical beach scene.

Order up! Carie Smith’s cheeseburger pumpkin picked up the Most Creative prize with its massive patty and crisp tomatoes and lettuce.

Molokai mo-bettah with CVN

The friendly, most-Hawaiian island of Molokai is best known for its leper colony, high sea cliffs, expansive reef and non-touristy vibe with no traffic lights on the entire island. Long time Carpinteria Community Pool members Janice and Bob Contons explored this slow-paced island mecca with Coastal View News in tow and were pleased to stumble upon a small orchid stand that instantly brought visions of Carpinteria’s beautiful orchid growers. Molokai may not be able to compete with the volume of Carpinteria’s spectacular orchids, but they have us beat with a deliciously fragrant Plumeria farm!

Walking with ghosts

The characters and stories acted out by the talented team from the Alcazar Theatre are all true to Carpinteria history. This year, organizers expected a low turnout due to competition with the World Series, but 70 people came out despite the game to be spooked in the fog by the terrifyingly true tales of Carpinteria.
