Teen’s death under investigation

Hector Jr. Nolasco passed away on Oct. 15, 2018. A vigil was held for the 19-year-old Bishop High School graduate and Carpinteria resident on Sunday, Oct. 21, at Carpinteria State Beach. The cause and manner of Nolasco’s death are pending toxicology and lab results, according to Kelly Hoover of the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office.

Brad Welch is new Carpinteria Station Lieutenant

After leading the City of Carpinteria’s police services for the last year, Lt. Brian Thielst has moved to the position of Station Lieutenant for the City of Goleta. As of Oct. 22, Lt. Brad Welch leads the Coastal Patrol Bureau, which includes the City of Carpinteria’s police services. Welch has been stationed in Carpinteria on and off throughout his 20-year career with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office. Since 1999, he has been a reserve deputy, a sheriff’s deputy, a sergeant and now a station lieutenant.

Application period opens for Festival of Trees

The Carpinteria Lions Club is currently accepting applications for local non-profit(s) to be the beneficiary(ies) of this year’s Festival of Trees. Applications should be sent as written requests on 501C3 letterhead to Festival Chair Mike Dawson at mike@ bigredcrane.net/. Requests must be received by Nov. 2. All letters must include why the funds are being requested, and what they will be used for in the local Carpinteria community.

The Lions Club’s ninth annual Festival of Trees will begin on Friday, Nov. 23, 2018.

This year, the 16-day event will return to the former Austin’s Homecenter building located at 700 Linden Ave. Last year’s event raised $20,000 for four local nonprofits.

Classmates hold 50-year reunion

Carpinteria High School held a 50-year reunion on Oct. 12 and 13 at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club. Fifty classmates and guests attended the two-day event which featured a tour of the Carpinteria Middle and High schools. The Class of 1968 was the first class to graduate from the “new” campus on Foothill Road. Attendees enjoyed a Friday night social time and a Saturday night catered dinner. “Lots of great memories were shared by each classmate,” wrote Donna Treloar, “and promises exchanged to meet again before the next 50 years go by.”

Carpinteria celebrates Dia de los Muertos

On Sunday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m., Aztec Ceremonial Dancers will lead a Dia de los Muertos parade, beginning at the Carpinteria Train Station and ending at Giovanni’s parking lot. Along with dancers, giant papier machete puppets and floats will adorn the parade.

The post-parade celebration in Giovanni’s parking will have music, arts and crafts, face painting and vendors. Worm composting workshop comes to garden park

Bring your kids for a worm composting workshop at the Carpinteria Garden Park, 4855 5th St., on Nov. 3 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Learn about the life cycles of these important soil decomposers, as well as how to harness their energy to turn food scraps into compost. Worms are an easy and odorless way to make compost at home, and are fun for kids to watch turn food into beautiful soil in the garden. A materials fee of $10 for a bin with worms to bring home, as well as an RSVP to attend is required.

Turkey Trot hopes to raise $30k

On Friday, Oct. 12, island Brewing Company celebrated the fourth annual Franklin Trail Back To School Challenge. Each Blazer was encouraged to donate $1 for every day they completed the trail to go towards purchasing bike/bear bells. in total, the group raised $450.

The next Franklin Trail challenge, the 4th Annual Turkey Trot & Tread, begins Nov. 1. The Turkey Trot continues through the month of November. The goal for trotters is to raise funds to restore the Franklin Trail. This year’s goal is to raise $30,000 to restore damage from the Thomas Fire on multiple Santa Barbara County Trails.

The author of a recent letter lamenting loopholes in our local mobile home rent stabilization ordinance (“Loopholes,” CVN, Vol. 25, No. 4) has taken on an issue that is not as cut-and-dried as he apparently believes, and he has made some inaccurate and misleading statements.

First, the writer asserts that incoming home buyers “can insist on a month-tomonth rental agreement.” (The presumption is that a month-to-month agreement, as opposed to a lease, will result in a lower rent and be subject to rent control.)

The City recently has said that negotiating a month-to-month rental agreement might be possible but only under certain circumstances having to do with the lease history of the particular home. So, the matter is far from a clear-cut option for buyers.

Our writer claims that, “Realtors ... have a fiduciary responsibility to inform new buyers of all the options ...”

This simply is not true. We have a legal responsibility to disclose anything we know for a fact that could have a material effect on the use or value of a property.

The only thing approaching factual about this issue, apparently, is that some buyers might be able to negotiate a month-tomonth rental agreement under certain circumstances. Other agents and I are now “disclosing” this newly identified possibility to buyers, and carefully, because we are specifically prohibited from giving legal advice.

Our writer couples “unprincipled realtors” (sic) with park managements. Real estate agents actually have a contrary interest in this issue: As rents go up, the market value of homes is suppressed, and so are the commissions we earn.

It’s simply not correct or fair to blame real estate agents for the perceived wrongdoings of mobile home park managements or loopholes in our mobile home rent stabilization ordinance. This is the realm of lawyers and City authorities.

I find it ironic in this election cycle that only one of the candidates running has taken the time to come down Ogan Road and talk to us about the ongoing problems we have had due to the freeway construction—Al Clark. When the Via Real on-ramp is closed, traffic is detoured down our street. Our residential street is turned into a freeway on-ramp with hundreds of cars coming down our street, many of them speeding. The last time we had the Highway Patrol watching our street, they issued 95 tickets in five days.

So where are our councilmembers who are supposed to care about our neighborhood? We hear from no one. My husband and I were told that there would be a stop sign put on our street to try to slow traffic down. We have been asking for it for years. But so far, still no sign. I feel that if any individual wants to be elected to City Council, it’s time for them to stand up and do something to actually represent the neighborhoods of this city.

Stay the course

I attended the Chamber of Commerce’s Forum for City Council Candidates on Thursday night, and my take away was “stay the course.” Our three incumbent councilmembers, Brad Stein, Gregg Carty and Al Clark have served our city well.

Their records in office speak for themselves. They have the knowledge and experience to deal with the challenges faced by our community.

During their time in office, Carpinteria has experienced an economic and cultural renaissance that has not gone unnoticed.

We have become known as a special place to visit and live, described in the media as “Southern California’s last small beach town.” It’s because we don’t pave over our past; we preserve it.

Being noticed has its downsides. For one, it attracts the attention of outside interests whose primary motive is to make money. Unchecked, they can incrementally destroy the character and charm of our community. Brad, Gregg and Al have proven they can push back against those who are only looking to enrich themselves at our expense. While they are not against development, they believe it must be a good fit, not a force fit. They always have and will continue to place people ahead of profit.

So please vote for all three, and rest assured that they will continue to represent you.

low each other. Let’s change faces. What have we to lose? Put some new faces in the city. I recommend that you check the two boxes of the challengers and do not check any of the boxes of the incumbents.

I wish no ill will towards the incumbents, they had their time in office. And the best they could offer us is a permanent sales tax increase. It is time for new faces. Let’s see what they can do. If they fail, vote them out in the next election, but let us give them a chance. I do not know them, but I am appalled that a small group of people control the city and they think they have all the answers—a benevolent troika. Let us show these interest groups and politicians that we, the citizens of Carpinteria, are mature enough to control our own destiny and that of Carpinteria. Let’s put new people in office.

Carpinteria needs Measure X

Vote “yes” on Measure X, it’s going to cost the average citizen very little. Ask yourself, what do I purchase in Carpinteria, food and gas, none of which will be impacted by this tax increase. It’s time to say “yes”

Take a look around Carpinteria and marvel at the way we have designed this town, starting with the State Beach. It could be choc-a-block three story apartment buildings, but we said, “No, let’s have some space.” Walk down to the Salt Marsh, and imagine a yacht marina there.

Again, we said, “No.” Head back through ample Linden Park and the campgrounds along the dunes to Tarpits Park, which would have made a fine bunch of beach houses, but we said, “No.” Continue on through the Nature Preserve, where we said, “No,” to an oil refinery, and above Rincon Beach where we said, “No,” to a resort.

Well, it’s time for us to say, “Yes.” Measure X will compensate for the revenue we lost every time we said, “No,” to developers and speculators. What is more, visitors will account for half of the money raised, which is only fair, considering that the reason we have so many visitors is that half the town is open space.

carpinteria resident I am writing in response to a series of events that occurred shortly before a young man passed away in my hometown of Carpinteria.

My focus here is on the bullying and escalation of comments, particularly on social media, which included death threats to this recent high school graduate. These occurred from adults in the community, some of whom I know from being a local from the 93013 zip code.

This is not a reflection on innocence or guilt of the deceased, nor am I commenting on the original post looking to identify the young man. I am responding to the updates to the post, the re-shares on various platforms of social media, the comments in response, and the direct messages that were sent to this young man.

We are better than this.

We need to watch our words and wait before speaking; don’t rush to share a post. We must take time to verify the details and make sure to communicate where we have gotten the “facts,” or make it clear the information is opinion/ conjecture at that point.

Ask ourselves first: Will it be helpful?

What is my intention in saying it? How am I feeling as I post this?

If it is being said out of anger, then wait. If revenge/to get back or to hurt someone is the reason, then wait. If it is to scare/threaten someone, then wait. If it is coming from a place of fear, please talk to someone else, and dialogue about the best course of action before posting.

If it is to inform someone with firsthand information, to educate, to bring joy, motivation, love, or to share a piece of yourself with others, then go ahead.

Just look at the whole picture though, and ensure there is clarity in intentions and that they are not harmful.

To the parents out there, I understand you want to protect your children; I am a parent as well. Let’s lead them with our own example and teach them to communicate and articulate in such a way that brings growth and doesn’t rip people apart. When we come from a place of fear, anger blasts its ugly head. We need to do things that will connect us as a community and not divide us.

I understand as a mother of a teenage girl how scary it can be and how helpless I can feel when she feels sad or scared.

However, that does not make it okay to harm another human being with my words or to make threats. I will always do what I need to, to protect her, however, it needs to be done calmly for the best resolution. So, to all of you who participated in the bullying, I ask that you look

I also am speaking to the rest of us who saw these posts, and I encourage everyone not to be a bystander, but to be an “up-stander.” If you see things beginning to get out of hand, say something.

Encourage people to take a break from posting and give them your opinion of why. Be gentle but firm, and tell them to just stop. Contact them privately and speak to them on the phone, or meet with them and let them know what you are seeing.

As someone who works in the mental health field, I am quite acquainted with a wide range of tragedies, unfortunately.

But even with all that experience, this event shook me up. Perhaps, it’s because it’s in a place I call home. I never would have thought people that I know would have said such horrible things, and I’m surprised by the subsequent and continued meanness. I love my town of Carpinteria and have seen amazing acts of community. We have done incredible events, random acts of kindness, and loved each other fiercely through loss, illness, during the fires and the mudslides. I know we are so much better than this. Our community has been through so much just in the last year, please: Let’s all be better. Act better.

Cannabis regulations for Carpinteria Valley pass

On Oct. 22, in a 4-0 vote, the Board of Supervisors for Santa Barbara County accepted the Coastal Commission’s certification of the County’s land use ordinances for the coastal zone, including modifications. Once the ordinances go into effect in November, the County will be able to conduct enforcement operations in the Coastal Zone.

Among the modifications, the Commission accepted a ban on outdoor cultivation within two miles of an urban-rural boundary. Additionally, Commissioners added a requirement that any cannabis not grown onsite, that is used in manufacturing or distribution in the agricultural zone, be sourced from within 25 miles of the county.

“We continue to support the board and the community and prohibition of

outdoor grows in Carpinteria Valley,” said Graham Farrar, owner of Glass House Farms and Treasurer of CARP Growers, “but we also feel a two-mile buffer is a good compromise. (We) prefer to see ordinances in place now to begin the path to enforcement and also keep it open for those on a path to compliance with the state so they can get proper licenses.”

Farmers, watchdogs and officials all agreed on the set of regulations. As Das Williams, 1st District Supervisor noted, “One point of optimism I have is, if you read the comment letters to the California Coastal Commission from both industry folks and neighborhood folks that have been maybe critical of the industry, they were almost exactly the same. They are asking for almost exactly the same thing.”

Madeline Gonzalez

Madeline Gonzalez passed peacefully in her home on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018. She lived 94 happy years.

Madeline leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law Lydia and Augustine Rada, three grandchildren, Annalisa Rada-McGee (Edmond McGee), Daniel Rada (Nanette Chavez), Augustine M. Rada and three great grandchildren, Katie McGee, Mia McGee and Samantha Rada.

Madeline was born in Carpinteria and lived there for half of her life. She was extremely dedicated in her faith and had many good friends she met through the church. In her younger years, she enjoyed visiting family in the Los Angeles area dancing and enjoying live music until dawn. She lived simply. She enjoyed the beauty in nature around her, always appreciating a full moon, beautiful flowers, good music and good food.

A mass will be held for Madeline on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018 at St. Joseph Church in Carpinteria with a reception to follow at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club.

Jose M. Gonzales

Jose M. Gonzales passed away peacefully and in good spirits on Oct. 7, 2017 in Santa Barbara.

His faith was important to him. Over the years, Jose was a presence in the Search and Crusade programs at St. Joseph’s Church. In recent years, he spent his time volunteering with Hospice and the Ridley Tree Cancer Foundation. Those who knew him saw firsthand his generosity, great sense of humor and willingness to help others in need.

At the age of 16, he started working at Delgado’s Restaurant in Carpinteria and was a permanent fixture there for more than 40 years. Jose was the son of Luis and Dolores Gonzalez and is survived by siblings Juanita (Manual) Torres and Luis (Grace) Gonzales Jr. Jose was happiest when he was with his parents and now he has reunited with them. He was also very proud of his family, and always worked to make sure his nieces, nephews and those he loved were well taken care of.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you take a moment to hug your child, grandchild or friend, or take a walk along the beautiful Carpinteria beaches for a moment, an hour, or a day.

Time waits for no one.

A service will be held at St. Joseph Church on Friday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m.

A burial will take place at Carpinteria Cemetery and a reception will follow at the Sand Piper Clubhouse.

Ann G. Love

Our beloved sister and long-time resident of Carpinteria, Ann Love, 75, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, October 9, 2018 from complications related to Diabetes.

She was born in Rochester, New York.

After high school, Ann moved to San Francisco with her best friends, Toni and Nancy. She lived there for 20 years, working for the Fireman Fund. She then moved back to Santa Barbara and worked alongside her brother Chuck and friend Ulla at Love’s Towing for another 20 years. While there, she was a member of the Tow Ladies. She was also a member of the Santa Barbara Business Woman’s Club, where she was president for one year. After retiring, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was very artistic and belonged to a special group of ladies who enjoyed crafting together.

Ann was very dedicated to her family and friends. She was always willing to pitch in and help any way she could.

We all have many memories of her being there for each one of us. Ann had an amazing smile and laugh. She could make anyone feel welcomed and loved.

She is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Lucy Love. She is survived by her four siblings, Chuck, Marie, Vincent and Bob. Also, by nine nieces and nephews and 19 great nieces and nephews, who all loved her dearly.

There will be a graveside service at Calvary Cemetery, Saturday, Oct. 27, at 10:30 a.m. The address is 199 N. Hope Ave. A celebration of life reception will follow.

City Council rejects development project on Sawyer and Linden avenues, again

In a 5-0 vote, City Council voted to issue a letter of support for Pacific Health Foods to receive an Off-Sale Beer and Wine license through the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), Type 20.

At present, there are 27 Type 20 licenses operating in the city, allowing businesses to sell alcoholic beverages in original packaging to be consumed outside of the business.

Pacific Health Foods specializes in natural and organic beverages and, according to the applicants, they would like to complement their offerings and expand beverage options by including specialty drinks, such as gluten free beer and alcoholic kombucha.

Mayor Fred Shaw presented Lt. Brian Thielst with a commendation for leading the City of Carpinteria’s police services for the last year, including the months during the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 debris flow.

Thielst will move into the position of Station Lieutenant for the City of Goleta, and Lt. Brad Welch will take the helm of the Coastal Patrol Bureau, Carpinteria Station.

At its Oct. 22 meeting, the Carpinteria City Council unanimously voted in favor of denying a project to convert a singlefamily residence and detached garage into a five-unit multifamily residential apartment development at 1112 Linden Ave., just south of the Linden Avenue Hwy 101 overpass.

The project was approved by the Planning Commission on Aug. 6, 2018. Two weeks later, on Aug. 27, City Council appealed the decision, raising concerns and requesting more information on housing density; parking; traffic safety; pedestrian and bicycle safety; and neighborhood compatibility issues.

The project proposal provided widened driveways, nine parking spaces and four bicycle spots for the five, one- and two-bedroom apartment units.

During the public hearing, the applicant, Architect Ellen Bildsten, noted that the project was originally submitted on June 9, 2017, granted approval from the Architectural Review Board but denied by the Planning Commission in its first attempt. The applicants rethought the project and brought it back to the Planning Commission, receiving approval in August of this year. Bildsten expressed that the neighborhood character would essentially remain the same. “Our project will look like a single-family residence from anyone passing in the street,” said Bildsten.

In terms of parking, Bildsten stated, “From what I understand, everyone involved agrees that there is no issue with parking or maneuvering. We’re providing perfectly adequate parking, absolutely to the requirements and beyond.”

Even before the Council’s discussion, dissent brewed in the public comments.

Bob Jordan commented that just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. “The backyard will become a parking lot for nine vehicles and much of the front yard will be paved over.”

Martha Rugg stated that this was a profit-driven development project with little sensitivity to the neighborhood, to which she belongs, and of which she is very proud. “I’m not going to monetize my property,” she said, “my property is my home.”

To Rugg’s comments, the owner/applicant Arvand Sabetian of Phari, LLC, responded, “I’ll be living in one of these units with my family. I’ll be living here as a stake holder in this community.”

Nevertheless, neither the protracted presentation from Bildsten and the project engineer, nor the owner’s personal statement, convinced the Council.

Council Member Brad Stein commented that people who develop properties will always try to max out limits, because they’re profit driven. “The important words that are getting left out are ‘up to.’” Stein also noted that there was no guarantee that these units would be affordable and they were more likely to be market rate.

Furthermore, Stein expressed concern for pedestrian safety. “The pull-out (space) is going to become a parking space,” said Stein. “That’s going to cause problems later on for cars coming in and out. I watch the cross-country team go up and down that route. We need to make our school routes safe. We can’t look at things in a bubble because we don’t live in a bubble… It’s not a good fit.”

Council Member Al Clark raised the issue of housing density. “I looked at the density,” said Clark. “The existing density is 7.9 and the proposed density is 19.6. Beach Walk is 18.3. All of the existing properties, excluding Beach Walk is

8.65. So that (the proposed multi-family unit) is higher than everything we have.

So, I don’t know if we want to go for full denial or to try and shave it off, but that would still be a high density.”

On the issue of parking, Clark commented, “One parking place per bedroom implies one car, but it will be two cars per unit,” he said. “Quickly the excessive parking will become a problem. We’re pushing parking onto the street and we need to stop that.”

Noting that the applicants had addressed many challenges, Council Member Wade Nomura, agreed with his fellow councilmembers that a five-unit development would be very difficult for the immediate community.

Council Member Gregg Carty was succinct, “I agree this is a good project, but it does not fit here. It’s out of character with the neighborhood, and it’s out of character with Carpinteria.”

Finally, Mayor Shaw noted that while Carpinteria has a clear need for workforce housing, the market rate for one- and two-bedroom apartments is high, “not workforce housing.” Shaw added that traffic safety was a concern, “with the off ramp, stop light, Sawyer Avenue and the widening of the overpass, all within 100 yards of each other—that is a huge chokepoint that will make it very difficult for the people living there. Anybody, from residents to delivery people, are going to have a really hard time getting in there.”

With the City Council’s vote, they directed City Staff to return to a future Council meeting with findings for denial of the project.

Carpinteria City Council If the City of Carpinteria were a body, its hardworking departments would be the hands while the City Council would be the decision-making brain. In this year’s election, Carpinterians will vote-in three councilmembers from among the five candidates competing for the seats. Incumbents Gregg Carty, Al Clark and Brad Stein seek to retain their seats. Newcomers Roy Lee and Dar Ringling have thrown their hats into the ring. Carpinteria is a wonderful place to live, but as we all know, we are in a housing supply crisis. This crisis is caused by the fact that the demand for housing far exceeds the supply.

Our housing prices are way higher than most of the country.

Because of that, many of our young families or older parents on fixed incomes can’t afford to live here. However, it’s healthy to have a community of all ages and backgrounds.

Providing affordable housing is one of our most challenging issues. The issue of growth tends to stir up emotions as we consider some tough questions: Where?

How much? What does it look like? Will it match our community?

We need to find some common ground on what we want our city to look like in the future. If we do not plan it strategically, the City of Carpinteria will change and may lose its character. That’s one of the reasons why I want to be your City Council Member. I want to listen to your opinion; those who want growth and those that don’t. I want to hear your ideas and research innovative ways to see if we can minimize our housing crisis.

Perhaps we should consider the possibility of more public-private partnerships; maybe even mixed-use projects (making it clear to developers what type of city we are). Perhaps we try to retain our local workers by working with employers on creative housing solutions.

All that without compromising the legacy of being a beautiful, small, charming beach town. Both candidates for governor propose that more than 3 million housing units be built within the next decade across the state. If we don’t figure out how to do this locally, the state may mandate where and how this housing will be built and we will have no say.

I am fortunate to live and work in Carpinteria. We need to strategically attract local businesses that match our community. That way more of us can work here.

This achieves multiple goals, including decreasing traffic between here and Santa Barbara.

We need to do everything we can to protect and preserve the Carpinteria Bluffs. They are one of Carpinteria’s most treasured possessions. Its nature at its finest.

Westerlay Orchids expands to Oxnard

Carpinteria-based Westerlay Orchids has added 39 acres in Oxnard to its portfolio of orchid growing facilities. Undeveloped and currently in use as open field agriculture, the new property is located on Hueneme Road, 1.5 acres from the ocean, which provides the necessary cool temperatures for proper cultivation.

“Long term sustainability is our driving motivation,” Toine Overgaag, owner of Westerlay, said of the move. “Orchids need a specific environment to thrive and building a new state of the art facility in Oxnard will help us continue raising the bar in the orchid market.”

Overgaag’s aim is for carbon neutral production and 100 percent use of recycled water. The new property has access to Oxnard’s GREAT water program (Groundwater Recovery Enhancement and Treatment), which recovers commercial and domestic wastewater for irrigation purposes as well as groundwater injection. Additionally, Overgaag plans to integrate solar panels in his greenhouse operations. Westerlay’s Oxnard expansion will also benefit many of the company’s employees who live in or near Oxnard and will have shortened commute times.

“The project’s build-out timeline is three years. It’s an exciting new chapter in Westerlay’s growth,” Overgaag said of the 24-acres greenhouse plan. “And, yes, we are keeping our Carpinteria location.”

I believe the City of Carpinteria has a well-balanced housing to commercial development plan. People who continue to suggest that we can build our way to affordability don’t understand the coastal California housing market. Just look to our north (Goleta) and to our south (Ventura, Oxnard and Camarillo) where farmland is being converted at breakneck speed for $500,000 condos and $2,500 per month apartments which most people would not consider affordable.

Let me be clear, I am not against new development and our current zoning affords great opportunity for housing of all types as well as commercial development.

Also, there is plenty of room within the city limits for what I call “in fill,” which in my mind is always preferable to annexing farmland and creating the kind of urban sprawl most Carpinterians moved here to escape from, and are trying to avoid.

Our city has also partnered with housing groups (such as Peoples Self Help Housing) to provide low/affordable housing in our community, and developers wanting to build market-rate housing can receive bonus density for providing affordable units. We also allow residential units to be included in commercial developments in some of our overlay districts.

However, at the end of the day, neighborhood compatibility can never be ignored, no matter what project comes before the City of Carpinteria.

My general position with regard to development of the Carpinteria Bluffs is that it needs to be something special—a jewel that current residents and future generations can enjoy—and I have yet to see anything fitting that category. But my mind is open to it, and now, with the decommissioning and site clean-up of the Chevron/ Venoco Plant, we have another area of the Bluffs that can be developed or left as open space as the community sees fit.

Foodbank launches two-month corporate challenge

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County’s annual End Hunger Games Corporate Challenge has kicked off with 17 Santa Barbara-area companies, including Procore, participating in the two-month competition. Teams are awarded points based on cash and food donations, volunteer hours worked and social media posts promoting the Foodbank.

“The goal of the challenge is for participating teams to earn as many points in the two-month period as possible, and also for participating team members to gain a deeper understanding of the work we do at the Foodbank,” said Nathalie Keller, corporate development manager.

While the corporate challenge is limited to the participating companies, anyone can donate as an individual, or in support of a competing team, by visiting the End Hunger Games website at donate.foodbanksbc.org/endhungergames2018/.

Ask the Candidates Carpinteria City Council

Question: Carpinteria has a long-held reputation for being a charming beach community, however, as the population rises and housing prices increase, the City faces profound questions regarding commercial and residential development. As cities grow there is always a demand for additional housing access for all levels of affordability. I would love to see a house available for anyone who chooses to live here. The problem is that there is very little property left to develop. Also, every new unit constructed increases the demand on public services such as water, power, roads, schools, parks, maintenance and emergency responders. Are we ready to add new demands on the services we know are already overburdened or cost more than we can afford to support?

Whatever new development occurs in our city must be self-supporting; it has to add to the quality of living here within the existing population. Three proposed projects meet this criteria: Green Heron Spring (30 units); Lagunitas mixed-use (85,000 sq ft will be office space); and a project at Carpinteria Avenue and Holly. This represents “fill-in” development. We won’t see large growth within the city limits unless we decide, as a community, to expand into the agricultural zone areas of the valley outside of the city limits, which is highly unlikely.

I don’t think that is a possibility unless a way can be found to fund the services these potential developments would require. Also, any development impacts the quality of life of the existing community. Is Carpinteria ready for an infusion of new homeowners and the congestion it creates? These are tough realities and emphasize the need to be careful of wishing for something without taking all the impacts into consideration.

Current possibilities for development include downtown and any type of development along available bluff parcels. What is the best overall value for our community? Again, yes, we are in need of new revenue that commercial development would provide and it would be nice to have more homes as well. Are you ready for the changes to our town that come with it? Personally, I would not want change if it means compromising the charm of the town we call home, and I don’t think anyone who plans on staying here does either. Change must be carefully planned and the city has to be ready and want it.

Carpinteria has been very successful in developing affordable housing. However, despite consistently meeting affordable housing targets, we face an affordable housing crisis. Existing units are lost out the backdoor faster than new ones can be developed. This is due in part to conversions of existing housing to second homes and short-term rentals that also inflate the rental and sales costs of housing.

Our community is approaching build-out; the main opportunities for creating housing are in-fill housing within existing neighborhoods. This is allowed by zoning, but must fit in with the character of our neighborhoods and General Plan and Local Coastal Plan standards.

Preserving our existing affordable housing stock is the best opportunity to protect Carpinterians, and to secure this resource for the future. I championed Carpinteria’s Short Term Rental ordinance that goes a long way towards protecting affordable housing.

The City successfully passed a Mobile Home Park Ordinance to protect Carpinterians on fixed incomes. We must guard against attempts to chip away at this protection and continue to help people make use of it. We are also actively addressing a loophole in the Condo Conversion Ordinance. We must continue to collaborate with organizations like People’s Self Help Housing and Habitat for Humanity, designing projects to provide long-term affordable and workforce housing.

I am a strong supporter of Carpinteria’s small businesses. It’s no accident that Carpinteria’s commercial properties have adapted to changing times better than many places, like State Street in Santa Barbara. Making the best use of what we’ve got beats endless development. Carpinteria promotes downtown businesses with First Friday events. Small business owners are our friends and neighbors. They are part of the community, they understand the goods and services that we need, and more money is retained in our community when spent at local stores, rather than chain stores. This is why I helped lead the City Council’s efforts to ban Big Box stores and to lower development fees for small local businesses.

The best use of the Carpinteria Bluffs is as public open space for recreation. As your City Councilperson, as a longtime Director of the Carpinteria Valley Association and a Founder of Seal Watch, I have seen Carpinteria come together to repeatedly say no to oversized developments and raise funds to protect the irreplaceable Bluffs for all Carpinterians. I will continue to work towards realizing this community vision.

Let’s keep Carpinteria Carpinteria—small, quaint, vibrant and sustainable.

I am in favor of considering all proposals for any residential and commercial development in our community. However, a proposed residential or commercial development plan must reflect the character of our community, from the ground-breaking to the grand opening.

With regards to low and middle income housing in our city, I am interested in having our leadership reconsider the “granny flats” idea. This would encourage homeowners to convert their garage into a single bedroom, or add an extra unit to their home to rent out, while offering protections that could streamline the process.

The Bluffs are a popular local destination that has already been well-developed by Mother Nature herself.

The only improvement I am in support of is the addition of security cameras to help combat the rash of car burglaries and loiterers.

Gorga gives talk on “Geology of Oil— the Super Glue of Chumash Indians”

At a recent Carpinteria Rotary Club Morning meeting, Director of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) Greg Gorga presented the history of nearly 13,000 years of oil usage along the Santa Barbara coast, starting with the earliest Chumash Indians up to the present day.

The Chumash were one of the only cultures to use plank canoes instead of dugouts. The natural seeps of asphaltum (oil ooze) mixed with tree sap served many purposes including making the Tomol canoes seaworthy.

Notice of Public Hearing Carpinteria Unified School District Real Property District Advisory Committee Please take notice that on November 8, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., at the Carpinteria Unified School District Board Room, 1400 Linden Ave, Carpinteria 93013 the Real Property District Advisory Committee (DAC) will conduct a public hearing on its preliminary recommendations concerning disposition of two unused school sites. At the same meeting, following the close of the public hearing, the DAC may submit its final recommendation to the CUSD Governing Board. The preliminary recommendations and background information are as follows: 1. DAC recommendation. Designate the Whitney Avenue site (Temple Street in Summerland, 6.84 acres) as surplus and sell or otherwise dispose of the site in accordance with law.

Background: This vacant site was acquired in approximately 1955 and has been unused during the interim. Earlier plans to potentially relocate the existing Summerland School to this location have been studied and rejected. The site has been considered for possible sale for several years.

2. DAC recommendation. Designate the 1101 and 1103 Bailard Ave. sites (two contiguous properties, 3.78 and 3.20 acres, with improvements) as surplus and sell or otherwise dispose of the sites in accordance with law.

Background: These sites were acquired in 2000 for a possible new school. However, sustained enrollment declines have ruled out any future utilization for a new school. This site has been considered for possible sale for several years.

Sale proceeds from these properties are restricted to capital projects and would be available to fund facility needs not included in the Measure U bond program.

The public is invited to attend and provide comments. Written comments are also welcome and should be addressed to the CUSD DAC, 1400 Linden Avenue, Carpinteria 93013. Written comments need to be received by October 31, 2018.

New fire chief is ready for wildfires

He hasn’t had a chance to surf here yet, but carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District’s new Fire chief Greg Fish is quickly settling in and getting the lay of the land. He and his wife moved to town the weekend of Avofest. “i love it here,” said Fish of his first impression. “it’s a great, tight-knit community. it’s refreshing to come to a district that’s so tied into what benefits the community.”

While carpinteria’s laid back atmosphere attracted Fish, it was the opportunity to be closer to family that motivated him to make the move from Glendale, where he worked in fire protection for 31 years, including as fire chief.

After his father passed away in 2001 and his mother this last December, Fish said, “i wanted to be closer to family.”

He has nine siblings, with two sisters and three brothers living in Goleta.

Along with surfing, Fish enjoys woodworking and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Fish and his wife Maureen, a retired school receptionist, have four daughters: Lauren, a nurse; Lindsey, an occupational therapist; and their younger girls, the twins, kelly and Megan, nursing students at Azusa Pacific University. The family also has a dog, Macy, a mini-Dachshund, who Fish is hesitant to call a pet since she is such a big part of the family.

“Less traffic, less stress, less crime,” said Fish on the difference between Glendale and Carpinteria-Summerland. “The more i get to know people here, the more i truly validate my decision.”

Fish is confident when it comes to protecting Carpinteria from wildfires, pointing out that, “We have excellent support from allied agencies. We have two Type 3

Glen Phillips to lead singing circle at Alcazar

The Carpinteria Arts Center will host singing circles with Glen Phillips at the Alcazar Theatre on Nov. 14 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Phillips will lead songs from around the world, blending voices in multi-part songs, rounds and harmonies. Oak Group supports Nature Conservancy with new show

The Oak Group continues its long-standing support of The Nature Conservancy with “Learning to Love,” an exhibition in Santa Barbara’s Faulkner Gallery in the Central Library, Nov. 2-30. An opening reception will be held on Friday, Nov., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The show’s title comes from a quotation by the painter Claude Monet, who wrote, “Eventually, my eyes were opened, and I really understood nature. I learned to love at the same time.”

Paintings and photographs in this show will include recently completed work by several Oak artists who were able to visit The Nature Conservancy’s Dangermond Preserve on the Gaviota coast. The preserve hosts 14 endangered species.

Forty-five percent of proceeds will directly benefit The Nature Conservancy and its projects, including nearby Carrizo Plain and Santa Cruz Island. South Coast Habitat Restoration creates opportunities for the return of Southern Steelhead trout

Now in its 11th year of operation, South Coast Habitat Restoration (SCHR) has garnered an impressive list of accomplishments in its ongoing work to restore habitat for the Southern Steelhead trout, which has been on the endangered species list since 1997. Working in creeks from Jalama to Ventura County, SCHR has raised $11 million for Southern Steelhead recovery, removed 25 barriers to migration, installed 12 bridges on private land to improve habitat and water flow, partnered with 20 landowners and restored 36 miles of fish-navigable creeks since 2007.

SCHR Director Mauricio Gomez points out that collaboration with federal, state and local agencies, non-profits and land owners has been key to the successes he and his team have enjoyed. While the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 debris flows have had major impacts on local watersheds—the creek systems that run from the ridge of the Santa Ynez Mountains to the sea—Gomez said that the disasters also brought numerous groups together in formulating plans for recovery. The events of last winter “raise the level of importance of our work,” he said. “Fish can recolonize that habitat.”

Borrowing from a business management model, SCHR and participating groups met last spring to develop “SMART” (specific, measurable, actionable, relevant and time-bound) objectives for habitat recovery and restoration in the wake of the twin disasters. Nevertheless, the fire and debris flows were “definitely a setback,” Gomez admitted, severely altering the shape and function of local creek beds. But the SCHR is playing the long game when it comes to habitat

Removing all the barriers to Southern Steelhead trout migration is “not going to happen overnight,” Gomez said, “it’s baby steps.”

Yet those steps are eminently achievable, and SCHR has a proven record of transforming creek beds from concretelined wastelands to lush riparian corridors, full of native plants. With every local watershed mapped in detail using Global Information System technologies, the steps to restoration can be clearly identified and planned out. And the good news for local populations of Southern Steelhead trout is that they are “opportunistic,” able to live not only in salt or fresh water, but also not dependent on a single creek to navigate in order to breed. In other words, a steelhead from Santa Ynez might return from the sea up Carpinteria Creek in a year with sufficient rainfall and water flow, which is entirely possible as every barrier to migration has been removed there. This vegan salad features blood oranges, fennel and avocado in an amazing combination of fresh fruit and vegetables.

In addition, the dressing is made with a flavorful blood orange olive oil and pearflavored white balsamic vinegar. Add a touch of honey for sweetness, and fresh edible flowers from the garden for color, and you have a salad your friends and family will remember.

Ingredients:

3–4 blood oranges (peeled and sliced 1/8-inch thick) 3 fennel bulbs (sliced 1/8-inch thick) 3 avocados ½ cup blood orange olive oil ¼ cup D’Anjou white balsamic vinegar ¼ teaspoon organic honey ½ bunch Romaine lettuce (chopped) 4 pansy flowers (nasturtiums are a good substitute) 4 chilled salad plates

Directions:

Trim the ends of each fennel bulb. Cut into quarters and remove the core from each quarter. Slice thinly (crosswise). Set aside.

Peel oranges. Trim off extra pulp. Slice off ends and discard. Halve oranges from top-to- bottom, and then slice into ¼-inch thick slices. Set aside.

Peel avocados and cut in half. Discard seed. Slice avocados into ¼-inch thick slices. Set aside.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together olive oil, balsamic and honey. Set dressing aside.

To serve, place a handful of lettuce on a chilled salad plate. Arrange oranges, fennel and avocados on top of lettuce.

Drizzle with a good tablespoon or more of dressing. Garnish with pansy flowers and serve while plates are still cold.

Warriors bedevil the Saints

After dropping two consecutive games on the road, the Carpinteria High School football team returned to Valley Memorial Stadium on Friday, Oct. 19, to take on Citrus Coast League foe Santa Clara in the Warriors’ homecoming game. Carpinteria overcame adversity to win 33-14, after senior starting quarterback Vance Keiser suffered a knee injury during the first quarter. Junior backup quarterback Will Collins stepped in and led the Warriors over the .500 mark overall on the season, and 2-3 in League.

The Warriors scored first on Tito Arroyo’s 45-yard field goal to go up 3-0 with 7:19 left in the first quarter. Later in the opening stanza Chris Ramirez thwarted a Saint drive with an interception, giving his team a first down at the Santa Clara 26. Then, on an option run, Keiser was cut down by a Saints defender and forced to leave the game. “He’s kind of our indestructible man,” said Carpinteria coach Rick Candaele, “he’s taken every snap since he’s a sophomore, not only in the games, but in practice.” The threeyear signal caller returned to the field on crutches at halftime to be crowned “Mr. Warrior” for CHS homecoming.

Into the second quarter, Collins ran around right end for a 15-yard score to make it 10-0. The Saints marched back with a drive of their own in the less than eight minutes remaining in the half.

Santa Clara quarterback Robert Rush Jr. connected with Eddie Vicuna for an 18yard pass play, putting the Saints at the Carpinteria 18. Rush Jr. then ran the ball in to reduce the lead to 10-7.

Yet the Warriors still found time to tack on two more scores before the half: a 54-yard bomb from Collins to Brady Sturdivan (who was back after missing nearly three games due to injury); And another touchdown pass by Collins, this time to Chris Ramirez covering 18 yards to catapult the lead to 24-7. Sturdivan, Carpinteria’s big-play receiver, finished the game with three catches for 109 yards and a touchdown to lead the squad.

The score was locked going into the fourth quarter, when Santa Clara lined up to attempt a field goal. The kick was blocked, and Carpinteria’s Ever Santamaria scooped up the ball, returning it 68 yards for the score and a 31-7 lead.

But the Saints weren’t ready to roll over, as Rush Jr. hooked up with Vicuna for a 21-yard pass play to knock the lead down to 31-14 with 2:55 left.

The ever-present Ramirez recovered Santa Clara’s onside kick attempt. “Chris is just getting back from his ankle injury, so he’s just kind of getting back into top form,” said Candaele of the senior wide receiver/defensive back/punt returner.

The Saints got the ball one last time, but the Warriors closed out the scoring when Enrique Marin trapped Rush Jr. in the end zone for a safety and a 33-14 final.

Collins completed three of ten passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, and was the game’s leading rusher with 35 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown in the game. “I thought he played it pretty well … we didn’t have any turnovers, I thought it was a really good effort on his part,” said Candaele. Carpinteria closes out the season at Nordhoff in Ojai on Friday, Oct. 26, with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Girls volleyball October 16 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team hosted State Street Academy in a CIF-SS Wild Card matchup. The Warriors went through State Street Academy with match scores of 25-6, 25-12, 25-8 to earn a CIF-SS Round One Match vs Coast Union in Cambria.

October 18 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team traveled to Cambria to face off against Coast Union, falling in match play by a score of 3-2. “Outside hitter Yaneli Silva number-nine had an extremely good game adding 14 kills and three aces for Carpinteria,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Freshmen number-14 Amber Watkins, also an outside hitter for the Warriors, had 10 Kills. Number-six setter Mary Sawlaw finished the night with 38 assists and six aces. Libero numberseven Mariela Guerrero had 26 digs. “It was a solid season, we were happy we ended strong,” exclaimed Garcia.

Number-two seed Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma came back to win against another Nordhoff duo. “In singles, number-five seed Sydney Endow cruised through her first match winning 6-1, 6-0 before facing and subsequently falling to the numberone seed from Malibu, 6-2, 6-2,” explained Bryant. Number-three seed Josie Gordon won her quarterfinal match against an unfamiliar Malibu foe in three sets, winning a tiebreak in one of the sets.

October 18 – The Cate School girls tennis team moved to 13-0 on the season with a 16-2 victory over visiting Laguna Blanca. Grace Fuss finished her league season with a 6-3 win over Katherine Monroy, moving the junior singles player from Cate to 16-2 on the season and 55-5 across three seasons of Tri-Valley League play. Carol Cai went 2-1 on the day, with Yuki Kobayashi also adding two wins and Madeline Vanica collecting another. In doubles, Sarah Polowczak and Fritze Mayer finished as the only undefeated team in the Tri-Valley League, moving to 20-0 with their 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 sets today. Way of the Orient students compete Folkstyle

Students from Carpinteria’s Way of the Orient Martial Arts Academy at 5408 Carpinteria Ave. took home medals in a sanctioned USA Wrestling Folkstyle Tournament on Oct. 13 at Buena High School in Ventura. Jesse Ruiz, Way of the Orient head instructor, wrestling coach, former USA Wrestling Freestyle and Greco California State Champion and a National Silver Medalist, said, “Three out of four students took home medals—one gold and two silver, which is great news for the community.”

The student athletes and their placings are: Jared Escamilla, two matches, 1st place; Brianna Escamilla, three matches, 2nd place; Connor Boyd, two matches, 2nd place; and Samantha Sanchez three matches, (did not place). Bin Tran Way of the Orient instructor and former Wrestler and Taekwondo National Champion, was also on hand to coach the team and participate in their success.

Annual Doc Carty Classic hits the beach

The beach volleyball courts at the end of Linden Avenue were the site of the annual Doc Carty tournament on Saturday, Oct. 13. A king of the beach format pooled players so they eventually faced all competitors in the tournament, meaning that even with partners playing as doubles teams, winners end up being individuals. Named for the late and well-loved former CUSD Superintendent and volleyball coach, the Doc Carty Classic keeps the traditional of California beach volleyball alive and well in Carpinteria.

The Cate School girls volleyball team sawed through the Frontier League with a perfect record of 10-0, finishing 12-4 overall. On Thursday, Oct. 18, the Rams hosted Rosemead from the Mission Valley League in the first round of the CIF-SS Division Seven playoffs. The Panthers proved no match as Cate swept the visitors from down south three games to none.

Cate jumped out quickly with a 10-2 run and never looked back, winning 2510. Junior hitter Kenzie Davidson nabbed four kills and freshman hitter Elise Guerrand-Hermes collected three kills, as did opposite junior hitter, Maya Blattberg. Midway through the second set, Cate made five consecutive errors which allowed Rosemead to gain momentum and tighten the score. With the effective serving of Guerrand-Hermes, Davidson and sophomore setter, Riley Borchardt, the Rams regained control to close out the set, 25-16. Cate continued their powerful play through the third set to win with a score of 25-12.

Cate juniors libero Grace Blankenhorn, and defensive specialists Finnian Whelan and Kim Rogers, helped steady the back court. “All three players did

a great job running down Rosemead’s tips and quick shots,” said Rams coach Greg Novak. Sophomore hitter Grace Johnson played in the middle and on the right side, scoring two points off her swing. Senior blockers Katie Browne and Georgia Douglas contributed by getting a couple of blocks and kills. Freshman middle Chidera Chukwumerije added three kills and four blocks. Freshman hitter Charlotte Weis grabbed an ace and made some digs in the back row.

Kill leaders were Davidson and Blattberg, who scored 10 apiece.

On Saturday, Oct. 20, Cate traveled to San Pedro to take on Mary Star of the Sea. “The match was intense, we had many long rallies with solid swings on both sides,” explained Novak. “The gym was so loud the players couldn›t hear each other on the court,” added the veteran coach. Nevertheless, the Rams swept the Stars three games to none. Leading in kills was Guerrand-Hermes with nine, Davidson had seven and Blattberg had six. Blankenhorn collected 10 digs. Cate ended up with a .233 hitting percentage as a team. The Rams host Linfield Christian in a third round matchup later in the week.

Cate Rams dominate the Hesperia Christian Patriots CVN RepoRt

The Cate Rams and the Hesperia Christian Patriots came into the football game on Saturday, Oct. 20, a combined 13-0. The Patriots were the top-ranked team in Division Two, while the Rams, according to calpreps.com, were the number-one ranked team in the state.

The two put their stellar winning streaks on the line, and when the dust settled, it was the Rams who came out on top by a 55-12 score. Cate is now 7-0.

Senior Jack Deardorff set the tone for the Rams on the first play from scrimmage by sprinting 50 yards to the end zone. Fellow senior Drew Anastasio followed in the next series with a one-yard score, and after a Patriot touchdown, junior Khadim Pouye found pay dirt on a 45-yard run. The second quarter saw the Deardorff brothers find the end zone on four-yard runs each, as both Jack and sophomore William Deardorff helped Cate go into the locker room with a 34-6 halftime lead.

Anastasio kicked off the second half scoring with two touchdown runs of six and one-yard apiece in the third quarter.

Jack Deardorff took to the air for Cate’s next score, finding junior Thomas Nettesheim for a 35-yard touchdown pass.

The final Cate score came from Jack Deardorff on a two-yard run.

The Cate defense smothered their opponents, only allowing the powerful Patriot offense one offensive touchdown.

Junior Scott Holmes and senior Jake Nelson were in the Hesperia Christian backfield all game long, while junior Callum Casey ranged the whole field making tackle after tackle. Juniors William Anderson and Dalton Phillips left the Patriot receivers little room to work, and Phillips and William Deardorff both had interceptions for Cate.

“This was a great win for us, we played a very good team that tried to get us out of our comfort zone,” said Rams assistant Dave Soto. “I’m proud of how we played all game long. This group continues to improve week to week thanks to our stellar senior leaders,” added Soto. The Cate coaching staff also learned in the beginning of the week that Rams are also ranked number-one in the CIF. “It’s only happened once before that we were ranked number-one in the CIF, to be ranked number-one in the State and CIF is a great tribute to the players that I have and the coaches that I have—also, to the players before who have set the bar high,” said Cate Head Coach Ben Soto.

Cate ends its regular season against rival Thacher on Saturday, Oct. 27, with a 2:30 p.m. kickoff in Ojai.

Chamlee wins Class 7 in Tijuana Desert Challenge CVN RepoRt

Dan Chamlee and The Factory Racing won Class 7 at the 22nd Lucerna Tijuana Desert Challenge on Sept. 19-23, completing the 136-mile course in 4:07:36. The weekend before the challenge, Chamlee and his wife Laurie, along with co-drivers Kurt Kimball and Amy Tate, traveled to the mountains between Tijuana and Ensenada for a pre-run, giving Chamlee valuable information on the narrow, technical, rough and rocky course.

The race consisted of four, 34-mile loops running two laps each day. On day one, Chamlee ascended the first steep hill when the truck slid to one side causing him to stop and only after trying several times to climb the rocky rutted hill, and losing valuable time, did he get back in the race. He went into the second day with just over 4 minutes to make up to reach leader Carlos Diaz. Chamlee was able to pass the leader at race mile 21, then Diaz broke his drive shaft. After ensuring that he had a healthy lead, Chamlee eased up to prevent unnecessary risks of potential damage or crashing, then he waited at the finish to make sure he had won. Diaz’s overall time was 4:21:28, putting Chamlee in the lead by 14 minutes and 8 seconds.

As preparations begin for the season finals, Chamlee has a small point lead going into the Baja 1000 which will be held in November. Team members who joined Chamlee for the race, included David Owen, Scott, Wendy, Kelli and Carson Brady, Kacey and Ethan Renaud. The team’s biggest fan, 18-month-old Lucas, was there rooting on the team, calling the trucks “vroom vrooms.” Partners that make the team’s success possible include: BF Goodrich tires, King Shocks, Rod End Supply and Sunoco Race Fuels.

Bantam: Caleb “Hambino” Kelly a first year player, has steadily improved his game ability weekly. Kelley forced 4 fumbles, 1 sack and made several tackles. He has been a great asset to the team. Bantams came out with a 12-6 victory over Ventura.

Business owners in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Carpinteria and Montecito will be filming music video dance scenes fri. at the beach at the end of Linden Avenue on Friday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. Women’s Economic Ventures is facilitating the shoot for an initiative called “I Love Local Business,” in response to the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 debris flow events. The project has a custom song with the chorus line, “I Love Local Business in the 805” to the tune of Katy Perry’s “California Girls.” Emmy-nominated, local song-writer Molly-Ann Leiken produced the parody lyrics, and the song was professionally recorded.

Museum Marketplace

The Carpinteria Valley Museum of History will hold its last Museum Marketplace of the year on Saturday, Oct. 27, sat. from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the museum grounds at 956 Maple Ave. One-of-a-kind antiques, collectibles, handcrafted gifts, and vintage goods of every description from over 70 vendors will be available. Halloween-themed items will abound, and vintage clothing will provide inspiration for last-minute costume ideas.

In November, the museum will host the Holiday Arts & Crafts Faire, and the flea markets will resume beginning the last Saturday of January.

St. Joseph Church, 1532 Linden Ave., will host a free flu clinic on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon, with this sun. year’s vaccine administered until supplies run out. Breast cancer screenings will also be offered by the American Cancer Society in partnership with Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, whose “every woman counts” program offers pap smears and mammograms to low-income residents. Howard School students recite poems and sing songs for GranVida residents in Carpinteria.

Howard School students visit GranVida

CVN REPORT

Residents at GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care received a special treat: A visit from 36 students from The Howard School in Carpinteria, the county’s oldest continually operating private school. The kids, who ranged from preschool to first grade, had such a great experience with their school’s recent Grandparents Day celebration, that they wanted to continue the fun by sharing it with other members of the community.

“The purpose of the visit to GranVida was to enrich our students’ lives by connecting them with members of the community, as well as bring happiness to the residents at GranVida,” said Anita

Betancourt, executive assistant for The Howard School.

Bentancourt said the visit was enjoyable and unique in many ways, but most of all, the teachers and parents were happy to see the students and residents participating in activities together. She also said that it’s a visit she’s sure the students and residents will never forget and would like to do again soon.

“It was very special seeing the smiles on the resident’s faces and to see them sing along with our students,” said Bentancourt.

Fernando’s parents, Cipriano and Huventina Ramirez, had moved from Texas with Southern Pacific Railroad in 1911. The company put the family up on a farm near the Bates Ranch, from which Cipriano maintained the tracks and kept the line clear of rocks and other debris. Fernando was born in 1914 and started working for R.W. Bates as a young man.

Robbie Hutto, R.W.’s granddaughter, remembers the ranch foreman as a “wonderful man” whose hard work and kindness won him a special place in the Bates family. Fernando passed away in 1983 at age 68, but his widow lived to 95. ALENA STEEN Gardening with plants native to the Santa Ynez mountains and Carpinteria’s coastal bluffs is a beautiful way to honor the ecosystems in which we live, as well as providing an environmentally sustainable alternative to water-guzzling landscapes such as lawns.

Native plants bloom and fruit prolifically throughout the year with almost no water, providing crucial food and shelter to animals, birds and insects and a limitless palette of textures, colors and scents for even the most formally landscaped garden. While the care requirements for natives are different from water-loving ornamentals, once established they require little time and effort to look lovely year-round.

Native plants have evolved in Southern California for millennia, adapting to the extreme conditions of rocky soil and an extended dry season. Our local flora has responded with vigor to the challenges, providing a riot of bloom after the winter rains and an immense amount of food for the Chumash, the original inhabitants of Carpinteria Valley, as well as diverse fauna which appear following native plantings. Brilliant moths and butterflies hover above flowers, while the hum of pollinating bees merge with the rustlings and chirpings of birds delighted to discover new places to hide and feed.

Selecting the right plants for your garden is a matter of observation and research. Take a walk in a favorite wild space, and pay attention to the layers and textures of a natural garden. You can mimic these plant communities in your own design by including plants of varying heights (creeping, herb, shrub and tree) and textures to add diversity and interest. Plan year-round food for birds and pollinators by selecting plants with varying bloom and fruit periods.

Choose plants for their beauty alone, for their edible or medicinal properties, or for their value as a cut flower to bring into your home.

Although the possibilities are endless, some of my favorites natives include narrowleaf milkweed, the preferred plant for all the life cycles of monarch butterflies; hummingbird sage, a fragrant and shade-tolerant food for local hummingbirds; goldenrod, with lovely yellow flowers that provide fall color and food, and any of the California buckwheats, a diverse array of plants with four seasons

Top picks for native shrubs include any of the coastal sages such as white, purple, or black sage, which are incredibly fragrant with long bloom periods beginning in early spring; California fuchsia, a vibrantly red-blooming shrub that is important fall food for pollinators; and thorny plants such as wild roses and currants that provide edible fruit and flowers, as well as protection from cats for our native bird life.

Small native trees perfect for urban planting include the many cultivars of manzanita, with the profuse flowers that native bees love; the many cultivars of California lilac, one of our earliest blooming and most fragrant trees, and toyon, one of the only native trees to produce fruit in the winter, which will attract migrating birds such as cedar waxwings.

And don’t forget to include a few graceful native grasses such as deer grass or creeping rye grass, as well as ferns such as maiden hair fern, bird’s foot fern, or chain fern for extra texture and dimen-

Fall is the perfect time for planting, allowing winter rains to thoroughly nourish transplants before next summer’s heat and drought. In most cases, your soil should need little to no amendment to support healthy natives. Since most natives prefer well-drained soil, I often choose to mound topsoil, especially if there is a hard-packed layer of poorly draining clay from construction. Mounding soil into a raised berm of a few inches to a foot creates optimal conditions for native plants, ensuring they don’t suffer from “wet feet” (when plant roots stay soggy), the number one killer of native plants.

After planting, water in once and keep an eye on the weather. Hopefully, winter rains will give you a reprieve from irrigation. Once the rainy season is over,

plants in their first summer will require supplemental irrigation a few times during the dry season. Dig into the soil around plants to determine moisture levels before watering, since over-watering is harmful. Mulching, or covering the topsoil with a three to four-inch layer of leaves or wood chips, retains moisture and decreases watering needs. There is a pile of high-quality mulch in front of City Hall on Carpinteria Avenue for use in home gardens.

Planting a native garden or incorporating a few native plants into an existing landscape will greatly increase the diversity of your garden, as well as promote resilience in the face of a changing climate.

There are many resources available to you as a beginner, including the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s well-established, inspirational landscapes and year-round native plant sale (sbbg.org), the talented nursery growers at Santa Barbara Natives (sbnatives.com) and Yes Yes Nursery (yesyesnursery.com), and the incredibly informative and cross-referenced plant and insect guides of Las Pilitas Nursery (laspilitas.com).

There are many books related to native plant gardening, including Bornstein, Fross, and O’Brien’s “California Native Plants for the Garden,” Keator and Middlebrook’s “Designing California Native Gardens,” and Rubin and Warren’s “The Drought-Defying California Garden: 230 Native Plants for a Lush, Low-Water Landscape.”

In addition, there is a Waterwise Landscape Rebate Program through Carpinteria Valley Water District for replacing lawns with drought-tolerant landscapes, including money for native plantings.

Explore the Carpinteria Garden Park’s own native plantings, which are in their infancy but already providing shelter and forage for many birds and insects. Community members rent a plot to grow their own fresh produce. The garden is a center for public education, with classes on organic gardening, nutrition, and sustainability. A hot tip

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham I’d received a hot tip from a friend who had recently summited Mount Langley in the Eastern Sierra. He told me he saw a handful of Sierra Bighorn Sheep around the New Army Pass region of the mountain.

I was intrigued because Sierra Bighorn have been on the Endangered Species List for some time. Their numbers were at a critical low of 100 animals a decade ago, but I had also heard that their numbers were on the rise in recent years. A few years ago, I was ascending the north face of Mount Langley and was surprised to see roughly 30 bighorn sheep traversing a big bowl of loose scree, bearing south into the shadows of the mountain. Their numbers are now at around 600 animals and still rising.

Sierra Bighorn are a distinct species of sheep. Their horns do not curl tightly.

Instead they curl outwardly and they are bigger animals than their desert counterparts.

I never count on wildlife. They can be habitual, but anything can break up their routine. Fall is a tricky time in the Eastern Sierra. The first winter snows can dust the mountains at any time, and something like that could force the bighorn to lower elevations.

I thought about all these things while lying in the back of my truck, a light rain pelting my down sleeping bag. At dawn, I left the Cottonwood Lakes Trailhead, the first several miles leading to the breathtaking Cottonwood Lakes. Fall migration was beginning too. Lots of birds moving through the lower elevations, enjoying the willows and abundant, mirror-like lakes at the base of New Army and Old Army Passes, eventually leading to Mount Langley.

Once above tree line, I started scanning for bighorn. They blend in so well with the granite rock and are so nimble in all the terrain above 11,000 feet. There were plenty of other alpine critters to watch, darting from den to den or perched on their favorite granite slabs, warming themselves in the morning sun. There are now about 600 Sierra Bighorn Sheep on the Eastern Sierra and while they are still on the endangered species list, their numbers are on the rise. squirrels frequently emerged from alpine hideouts to check me out. Always good to see, but I had bighorn on the brain.

When I reached the ridgeline of New Army Pass I scanned again with my binoculars. I didn’t see anything except one backpacker moving slowly toward me.

When we crossed paths, I asked, “Have you seen any bighorn sheep?” He said, “Maybe. I saw some four-legged critters silhouetted on the ridge before sunup.”

I thanked him and continued toward the broad summit of Mount Langley. I wasn’t 100 feet beyond that solo backpacker when I heard him say, “Hey!” I whirled around to find him pointing to the south. I looked through my 300mm lens and saw a solitary Sierra Bighorn slowly traversing the ridge. I thanked him again and ran up to the ridgeline, eventually getting slightly above the sure-footed herbivore. Before I knew it, I had a good look at the bighorn ram. It showed hardly any concern for me as I angled diagonally toward it.

The lone bighorn was heading toward a deep chasm, a place I wasn’t comfortable getting into. The drop was nearly sheer, but it was effortless for a bighorn.

As I approached the edge, another younger bighorn emerged from the granite. It was bedded down on a ledge. Once the larger, older bighorn drew closer the two sheep came together and they quickly descended the steep granite face.

It was late morning and I was satisfied with what I had seen and experienced.

Did I really need to summit Mount Langley? I’ve been to the top several times in the past. It was kind of late to be going for the summit and big thunderheads were forming to the south and over the Owens Valley. Just a couple thousand feet to the summit, so I was on it and by 12:30 p.m.

I had another one of those amazing views in the Eastern Sierra.

The descent was quick. Nothing like long, loose scree slopes to make me feel like a superhero. My strides became

Olympic, and my pace quickened before reaching Old Army Pass. The first of the lakes beckoned, but by the time I got to the other side of them it began to rain, 7 miles of wet to the trailhead, but all I thought about were Sierra Bighorn bounding across the higher elevations.

CVN goes to sea aboard the QEII

Ted and Mary Anne Theilmann brought a copy of the Coastal View News on their cruise aboard the Queen Mary II from New York to South Hampton, England, in late August. The crossing took eight days, and the Theilmanns’ ultimate destination was Utrecht, Netherlands, to surprise their daughter and her husband, and to celebrate their twin grandsons’ second birthday. They made it to Amsterdam and then to Utrecht, which is about 30 minutes south, just in time for Knox’s and Remington’s birthday. The boys’ parents are Jess (Theilmann) and Chase Wreyford, and Jess is a 2003 graduate of Carpinteria High School.
