Over 100 deaths from Covid-19 countywide

On Sept. 15, Santa Barbara County reported 8,741 positive cases of Covid-19, including 107 deaths.

In the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria there have been 187 confirmed cases and seven deaths. The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has tested 135,742 people for Covid-19 thus far. Among health care workers, 431 have tested positive. While 5,261 cases presented as symptomatic, 848 cases were asymptomatic (with 120 still under investigation). For more information, visit publichealthsbc.org.

Avofest selects Virtual Guacamole Contest Contestants

The California Avocado Festival has chosen its 2020 contestants for the annual guacamole contest through a random selection from all entries received. This year’s contestants are Vin Bennett, Danielle Bordenave, Jill Castro, Dale and Jamie Collins, Jaime Diamond, Peter Dugré, Susan Mosby, Carol Nichols, Jenny Roberts and Guadalupe Santana.

The Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce, from Goleta to Carpinteria, will host a virtual State of the City-Carpinteria on Friday, Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. The State of the City will be filmed live from Bega North America in Carpinteria.

Carpinteria will be the first of the four-part State of the City series, featuring Goleta in October, Santa Barbara in November, and a State of the County in December.

Peter James Hamilton Winn 1/26/1961 – 8/23/2020

Tony Olivares 9/12/1940 – 9/8/2020

Anthony “Tony” Olivares passed peacefully at Serenity House in Santa Barbara, California on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020 at the age of 79, just a few days shy of his 80th birthday.

Tony was born on Sept. 12, 1940 in Santa Barbara to Ventura and Angela Olivares. He was raised in Carpinteria along with his six siblings, including his three sisters: Mary, Rosie and Chon. His three brothers, Silvario, Thomas and John preceded him in death.

Tony was a life-long resident of Carpinteria and graduate of Carpinteria High School in 1958. It was during this time that Tony’s passion for sports was born and nurtured. He was an all-star athlete in four sports having lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track.

He later went on to play baseball for the Santa Barbara Merchants as well as many successful seasons of city league softball and basketball.

After graduation, he started a position at the Carpinteria Water District. He then honed his skills in various trades before establishing a career as a drywall finisher for over 40 years.

It was early in his drywall career that he met the woman of his dreams, Dyanne, who would soon become his wife of 49 joyful years.

Those happy years were spent beginning a family, raising four children, and doing the activities together they loved the most, such as sports and camping.

Tony was always the life of the party and could often be found telling stories or imparting wisdom around the campfire at Bass Lake or Lake San Antonio.

Many also remember the impact Tony had on their lives as a result of being coached by him in basketball, softball and baseball. He mentored children ranging from Little League through high school for 40+ years. He was beloved as a coach by parents and athletes alike for his passion, life lessons, fundamental teachings and dedication.

Tony is survived by his wife Dyanne; children Elizabeth, Tia, Tonya and Tony; grandchildren Tressa, Raeanna, Ciarra, Kinsey and Hailee; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Carpinteria Boys and Girls Club, 4849 Foothill Road, Carpinteria, CA 93013; Carpinteria High School Boosters Club, P.O. Box 444, Carpinteria, CA 93014; or Hospice of Santa Barbara.

No services will be held at this time.

The family thanks you for your support and prayers. A celebration of life is planned for next year.

Peter James Hamilton Winn, born on Jan. 26, 1961 in Dorset, England, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2020 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital where he was cared for by the angels in Compton 1.

Peter was diagnosed in early 2020 with Multiple Myeloma, and staged a courageous battle against this vicious blood cancer.

Having studied arboriculture at Merrist Wood College in Guildford, England, Peter was recruited by Griffin Tree and Landscape in 1983 to come and work in Santa Barbara. Falling in love with Santa Barbara and meeting Jan, Peter decided to stay. For over 30 years, Peter owned and managed Westree Arborist Services in Santa Barbara. In 1992 Peter and Jan welcomed their only daughter Allison into the world.

Describing Peter as gregarious would be an understatement. Always a smile, always a laugh or witty joke, always there to lend a hand or loan a friend something from his sporting-goods garage. Peter was an avid motorcycle rider and kept fit through paddle boarding and kick-boxing. Since 2008, Peter participated in 12 different Friendship Paddle events to support an honoree experiencing a life-threatening disease. He is the honoree in September of this year.

The true loves of his life were his wife Jan and daughter Ally, and they called Carpinteria home. Peter lived a big life with his family, traveling often and never taking for granted any experience he was offered. Peter is preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary and Eric Winn, and brother, Michael Winn. He is survived by his wife Janice and daughter Allison, brothers David and Robin Winn (Angelika Pelzer).

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Ridley-Tree Cancer Center.

A Celebration of Life will be planned for Spring 2021.

BY DAVID GRIGGS, DIRECTOR/ CURATOR OF CARPINTERIA VALLEY MUSEUM OF HISTORY How will history judge Carpinteria’s response to Covid-19? That remains to be seen, but you can ensure there will be an answer in the future by becoming a card-carrying member of the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society.

As the museum’s director/curator, I am the only paid staff. It would be impossible to maintain the Historical Society and museum without the generosity of its large family of dues-paying members and big-hearted donors, and of course its dedicated corps of volunteers. It is the contributions of our members like you that have enabled us to create and maintain our beautiful and locally renowned historical museum—a true community treasure!

This year in particular has been fiscally difficult. Covid-19 has necessitated the closure of the museum and suspension of the museum’s fundraising activities, such as the monthly flea market, the Holiday Arts & Crafts Faire, school visits and member field trips—not to mention the empty visitor donations box and loss of gift shop sales.

We do not rely on any government funding. The Society’s primary sources of revenue are generated through membership dues, memorial donations, endowment fund investment earnings and fundraising activities. Every membership dollar truly helps to keep us going.

And while the museum remains closed to the public, and events and programs have been suspended, our work of historical preservation continues. All of the museum exhibits have been dismantled and thoroughly cleaned and conserved, and new interpretive texts are currently being updated and replaced to increase visitors’ educational experience once we do reopen. Our accessions, archives and photo documentation volunteers remain hard at work, and of course the popular newsletter remains in publication and mailed on schedule.

Membership dues begin at a modest $25 for an individual and $35 for a family.

Benefits include a subscription to our history-packed bimonthly newsletter, “The Grapevine,” in addition to (post-Covid) discounts on fees for museum field trips and on purchases from the museum’s gift shop, as well as invitations to special museum programs and events.

As an added incentive to join and support our work, all new members may schedule a private guided tour of the museum (bring your masks). Oct. 1 is the beginning of the new membership year, so now is the perfect opportunity for you to join the Historical Society and help us to continue the work of historical education and the preservation of Carpinteria’s fascinating history.

Train Station Inn, hotel encroachment

The proposed hotel project at the train depot parking lot is a bad idea. A few reasons why: the hotel will cover much of City Parking Lot #3 with a three-storyhigh structure, resulting in loss of parking for residents and tourists alike; the developer’s claim that hotel guests will come to Carp on the train is fantasy—few tourists coming to a boutique hotel will be willing to be without a car during their stay; creating a new lot located on Dorrance is in violation of the planned use of that land.

The hotel will also take over the east end of the Community Garden—a jewel in the crown of this town, and which has a waiting list for plots that were to be built on that land.

Multiple re-namings of the project make it difficult to track—by design— through City Council meeting agendas.

“499 Linden Managers, LLC” is just its latest moniker, and at least one City Council member didn’t recognize it as the train depot hotel project because the name of the project wasn’t included.

The developer went bankrupt on a previous project—picture a half-finished hotel sitting on a prime corner of our downtown while Carpinteria struggles to finish it. City land is our land. Our tax dollars paid for it. I don’t like my investments lining the pockets of others who, in this case, take conveniences—parking— away from me, hide their intentions by changing the name of their project and have a sketchy financial history.

La Conchita responds on parking

Regarding the La Conchita pitchfork published in last week’s CVN, I would like to clarify some things. First, La Conchita is a friendly community and we welcome responsible visitors to our beach. Yes, we consider it our beach, since we maintain it. We have members of our community who daily pick up trash left behind by those who use the beach.

The cars parked out front belong to residents who live in La Conchita.

The red curb at the end of Surfside is in front of the driveway/gate to the orchard. Beachgoers were blocking access to the driveway. The curb paint was done with permission.

People even parked in front of the mailboxes and our mailman could not deliver the mail normally.

If you want to enjoy our beautiful beach at La Conchita, please be responsible, pick up your trash, pick up after your dogs and be considerate.

This proposed parking lot is open space and falls under the jurisdiction of the newly formed “Open Space Management Board” formed by the resolution 6002 effective Sept. 21, 2020 and includes Ted Rhodes and his committee of seven.

We must protect this open space like we did the Bluffs and not give it to the developers.

Former residents lose home to wildfires

I am writing this letter to all Carpinterians to let you know that Dorothy and Dennis Coffman, former longtime citizens of Carpinteria and 27-year owners of the iconic Rincon Cycles, have lost their home due to the wildfires in Phoenix, Oregon.

The Trump campaign just ran a TV ad for several days asking us to “Support Our Troops.” The ad included a photo of soldiers in full battle gear, beneath several fighter jets. Those who know, recognize that the jets are Russian MiG-29s, and at least one of the soldiers is carrying a Russian AK-47 Kalashnikov rifle.

In a campaign ad from literally any other presidential candidate in modern history, Republican or Democrat, this would be a terribly embarrassing mistake.

In my 79 years on this normally beautiful planet, and for the last 58 years (since I began voting), I’ve considered myself a thoughtful person, in politics included. I’m a proud registered Democrat, who, in times of world duress, has voted Republican three times.

The nation and the world has never been so divisive, such that you can cut the air we breathe! Yes, I tried to enlist in 1963 to get at the disrespectful and unthinkable actions of the Russians at the time, but President Kennedy thanked me, and told me I couldn’t go because I was a father—I tried.

Now, this guy in our precious White House is nothing like our previous presidents. And the Republicans in the Senate, to their peril this November, will prove their unworthiness. Some have seen their erroneous ways and are now

speaking up against the Orange One. Yet there are people, even right here in my beautiful native city of Carp, who shut their eyes at the erroneous actions of this president (on TV no less) and work to divide us.

Civil war?! Voting two times?! C’mon!

It’s just his latest spoken idiocy. If the people I’m writing to can understand, perhaps they can see that I’m fed up with #45 and can hardly wait for my absentee ballot so I can finally get him out of office—despite his cries of foul before we vote. (A premonition also?) The closer Nov. 3 gets to us, I’m starting to see the light!

Vote your conscience

I am voting to re-elect President Trump in November. I look at Democrat-run cities like Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and New York, and I am appalled. I support the police and the rule of law. In addition, my 401K is at an all-time high.

I worked hard for my retirement, and it is doing well under the current administration. Do I like Trump as a person? Not really, but I do not like Biden either. I am voting for the person I perceive as the best candidate to run this country. I have been bullied and shamed for my opinion by so-called “liberals,” and I am tired of it. It appears to me that Democrats are now the party of non-tolerance and yes, violence.

I am entitled to my choice, but I feel threatened by the vehement negativity of the people in this city and state. I am voting to re-elect President Trump. This is still America, and that is my choice.

Vaccine verification

Thinking ahead to the potential advent of a vaccine for Covid-19, concerned employers may tell their employees, “you must get vaccinated to work here.” As a condition of employment, employees often must take a drug test and school children must be vaccinated against several communicable diseases, so it isn’t a big step for an employer to require Covid-19 vaccinations to protect their other employees as well as their customers.

Some public-contact businesses may use “100 percent vaccinated employees” in their advertising, and customers may look for that reassurance before getting their hair done or entering other stores and restaurants. I am old enough and vulnerable enough that I would look for and demand that reassurance of protection against the 20 percent to 40 percent of people who say they will not get vaccinated.

After people start getting vaccinated, the first thing to go away will be masks, so how will I know the clerk isn’t infected and liable to infect me without the business requiring vaccinations?

Early reports indicate that the health care provider who gives you the shot will supply a card showing the type of vaccine and the date of the injection so proof of vaccination will be available.

I urge Carpinteria businesses to begin planning on how they will demand, use and keep records of that proof and help stop the spread of the deadly virus.

AHA! receives grant for Spanish language social-emotional learning certification program

The AHA! program received a $5,000 grant from The Fund for Santa Barbara for their Spanish Language Social-Emotional Learning Certification Program. With a mission to equip teenagers, educators and guardians with social and emotional intelligence to dismantle apathy, prevent despair and interrupt hate-based behavior, AHA! has worked in Santa Barbara County since 1999 and has served more than 25,000 youth and adults.

The Fund for Santa Barbara grant supports workshops for Spanish-speaking participants developing five competencies: self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making, to improve community solidarity and reduce instances of harm.

Workshops are designed and facilitated by three Latinx facilitators to empower Latinx families in a culturally competent manner to advocate for themselves within the spheres of work and home; develop stronger, healthier bonds with family members; improve communication skills; increase self-awareness; apply reparative models in times of conflict; and learn effective tools to set boundaries.

BY CHRISTIAN BEAMISH In a special meeting of the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday, Sept. 15, members voted 4 to 1 (Rogelio Delgado dissenting) to approve a waiver application to the state of California that would allow a partial return to in-person instruction for elementary students on Oct. 1.

The “hybrid” plan splits classes into two cohorts of no more than 14 students each. Cohorts will attend two-consecutive days (Monday-Tuesday for “Cohort A,” Thursday-Friday for “Cohort B”) of in-person class from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and rely on distance learning via Zoom for the other days of instruction.

Over 100 people attended the online school board meeting, with 40 speakers presenting compelling points-of-view from both sides of the issue for nearly four hours. Seventeen members of the public spoke in favor of the hybrid reopening plan, and 22—many of those CUSD teachers—spoke against it.

Parents and teachers opposed to the partial reopening plan pointed out the dangers of exposure to Covid-19 while the pandemic is still in the most-severe stage in the surrounding areas of Santa Barbara (particularly North County) and Ventura, Oxnard and Los Angeles beyond.

Those in favor of reopening spoke of the very low rates of Covid-19 infections in Carpinteria, and a generally downward trend in the numbers of hospitalizations across the region, as well as the negative effects of ongoing social isolation for young students. Additionally, the statistically low rates of infection and transmission of Covid-19 in children 10-years-old and younger, versus the difficult-to-impossible task of homeschooling while simultaneously trying to work, led many parents to advocate for

Safety measures and protocols were presented by Superintendent Diana Rigby, which teachers’ union representatives said were not only impossible to implement, but also mischaracterized. CUSD teacher Krista Munizich said, “Staff did not participate in Covid safety training as stated by CUSD,” and noted that the plan called for classroom windows to be open at one-foot for ventilation, but that the windows in her classroom only open four inches. She also questioned the amount of available personal protective equipment the district claimed to have.

Another issue for some parents is the lack of alternatives to the reopening plan. Students will either attend class in the hybrid model, or lose their place in school and instead take an independent study course online. For participants in Dual Language Immersion, the prospect of losing a spot in the program is particularly upsetting. Weighing all the competing claims, the school board voted in favor of proceeding with the hybrid reopening plan.

Trying on a different skin color

As my friends can attest, my skin color is definitely white (or red if I’ve been in the sun too long). I really don’t have any other options. Frankly, I’ve never thought very much about my skin color other than to complain that I can’t ever tan.

But watching and reading the news surrounding the issues of race and equality and prejudice and economic opportunities and social justice, I’ve been trying to imagine how my life would have been different if my skin were black or brown or my parents were recent immigrants.

To begin with, I grew up in the ‘50s and ‘60s so just being a female was hard enough. I went to a tiny high school and wanted to take woodshop or drafting.

The powers that be said girls couldn’t take woodshop or drafting and wanted me to take home economics. Well, I showed them. I refused to take home ec, saying my mom could teach me how to cook. Instead I took physics and was the only girl in the class. Not sure I changed anybody’s mind or proved any points,

but at least I was trying to show girls should be able to take any class they wanted.

I had a great friendship with my tennis buddy that started when we were old enough to ride our bikes to the public courts for lessons. Her Mexican-American family adopted me and over the years I grew to call one of her relatives Aunt Sally. As a teenager I worked at the local drug store on Saturdays, and one afternoon this friendly woman came in.

I immediately broke into a smile, walked over and called out, “Hi, Aunt Sally.” The three other customers stopped talking, looked at her, looked at me, and she was very uncomfortable. She later explained that maybe, in public, I should not call her Aunt Sally. At first, I didn’t get it, and then I got mad.

In my tiny hometown of Lindsay, there were Mexican Americans and Japanese Americans but no Black Americans until one family moved to town around 1965.

Everyone at the high school was excited because the son was thought to be a good basketball player. I think the family lived in Lindsay about a year before moving on.

As the three teenagers were older than I was, I really didn’t know them very well but often wondered if dating was a problem for them. Lindsay was not known for being open to mixed anything except for sports but, as the songs said, times were a changing.

Trying to imagine how my life would be different if I were Black is challenging.

The only time I’ve had issues with service in an upscale mall was when Robinson’s was the premier department store in La Cumbre Plaza and I was a student at UCSB. (Think bell bottom pants, long hair and loose blouses.) The only way a clerk would help me, even if I wanted to pay, was if no one else was around.

That was irritating enough, but at least no one thought I was a shop lifter or the cleaning service.

When I was teaching in Oxnard, we had quite an ethnic mix, especially due to students that came from Navy families on the base. We had Filipino, Black, Japanese, Chinese, Hawaiian, Samoan, Vietnamese, Mexican, and Korean Americans—and probably more that I can’t remember. It certainly was a melting pot—great food, shared stories and a variety of celebrations. My students probably taught me more than I taught them, but I never felt that my skin color was an issue. Being a woman, on the other hand, could be

at times.

One year, a Black student was moved to my class because he had hit a male teacher. I did not want this student, not because of his skin color but because of his problems with his previous teacher.

Also, this student’s mother was known to be pushy and hard to deal with. Yet, for some reason, this student was always respectful in my class, did his work, but spoke up when and if he wanted to expand on an idea or make a point. Slowly we both relaxed and made it through the year without a problem, and his mother and I only had productive conversations.

One of these revolved around capital punishment, don’t ask me how we got on that subject. I said I was on the fence about this issue, and she set me straight explaining how many more Blacks were convicted of crimes due to lack of good

CITY BEAT El Carro to have off-leash hours for dog owners

At its Sept. 14 meeting, the Carpinteria City Council directed city staff to prepare plans for a pilot program that will allow off-leash hours for dogs at El Carro Park.

Councilmembers acknowledged that the park is already used by many dog owners, and that formalizing a structure would benefit both dog owners and community members wishing to use the park without off-leash dogs present. The council requested that staff work with local nonprofit C-DOG (Carpinteria Dog Owners Group) to set limited hours for off-leash dog use

in the park’s north field adjacent to Highway 192. Additionally, the council supported relaunching an effort for a more permanent dog park in Carpinteria by involving C-DOG in the planning process.

“El Carro Park is already an off-leash dog park. But they (C-Dog) want to feel like they’re not breaking the rules,” said Councilmember Gregg Carty, noting in concurrence with other councilmembers that a clear structure, signage and enforcement of limited hours would be required.

Train Station Inn Project agreement extended

In a 3-2 vote, Carpinteria City Council approved a one-year extension of the Exclusive Negotiation Agreement with 499 Linden Managers for the Inn Project located at 499 Linden Avenue near the railroad tracks. Councilmembers Al Clark and Fred Shaw dissented. A public conceptual review of the project was scheduled for last April, but was postponed indefinitely due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

City staff anticipates that a large audience will want to participate in the review, which creates challenges for social distancing and other Covid-19 requirements. Recently, the city has improved its ability to conduct virtual public meetings and expects to hold the conceptual review for the inn project in November. Doing so required an extension of the existing agreement with the developer.

The inn is proposed for a portion of the city parking lot adjacent to the Amtrak station. The project consists of an 18,000-square-foot two-story inn with rooftop and ground level food and beverage service. The developer would also replace the required parking spaces and relocate existing public restrooms.

Two members of the council voted against extending the agreement with 499 Linden Managers citing reasons that included incompatibility with Carpinteria’s small town atmosphere and impacts on parking and downtown views. Numerous residents also voiced opposition to the project. Councilmembers who voted in favor of extending the agreement said that they had not made a decision on the project and that the inn concept deserved an opportunity to undergo public review.

Council supports transition to city-run library

Carpinteria City Council has initiated the multi-year process to transition management of the Carpinteria branch library to the city of Carpinteria. After decades of management by the city of Santa Barbara, a governance shift is expected to improve financial transparency and local control, among other benefits.

Library consultants MJ Gomez and Associates conducted a six-month analysis of options for governance and operations of the Carpinteria and Montecito libraries and presented findings at the Sept. 14 City Council meeting. The consultants recommended that Carpinteria form a new zone in the Santa Barbara County library structure and include Montecito in that zone. Goleta successfully implemented a similar plan in recent years, and will serve as a model for Carpinteria and Montecito’s transition out of its current zone, which includes the Santa Barbara Central Library and the Eastside Library.

Sharply rising administrative costs have challenged the Carpinteria branch in the last five years. Traditionally, the county of Santa Barbara provided most of the library’s funding, but in recent years,

county funding increases have been far outpaced by steeply rising expenses.

Friends of the Carpinteria Library, in response, has shifted its support from library improvements to basic operational costs. The city of Carpinteria’s financial support of the library also increased dramatically, and most recently, large funding gaps have been filled by revenues from Measure X, a city-sales tax increase that voters approved with the understanding that the library would be a beneficiary.

The cost of operating a new library zone with Montecito is expected to be similar to current costs. Montecito’s library operates with limited hours and its major funding is now from its Friends group. Library consultants recommend that Montecito secure a dedicated revenue stream that would allow it to expand its services.

The complex process to create a municipal library could be complete by the summer of 2022. Part of that process will be to gather community input for the library’s future and develop a plan for realizing that vision.

The application period for an affordable housing lottery for four Carpinteria homes will open on Sept. 21 with a Nov. 20 deadline. The homes are units of the newly constructed Seahouse by Warmington Residential complex located at 1300 Cravens Lane. The lottery will select buyers for two, two-bedroom condominiums listed at $391,500 and two, three-bedroom condominiums listed at $471,000.

Eligibility has an income maximum (variable on household size), with priority given to individuals employed in the critical work force and living/working within the city of Carpinteria.

Coastal Cleanup spans entire month

September marks the 36th annual California Coastal Cleanup. This year, rather than being held on a single date, cleanups will take place every Saturday throughout the month. And anyone who can’t come out on a Saturday can schedule their own cleanup for any day and time in September.

This year’s clean-ups are self-guided and should be close to home. Choose a local park, shoreline, creek, street, sidewalk, drainage area or trail. By removing trash in neighborhoods, you keep it from being carried to the ocean in the next rainstorm.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District issued an Air Quality Warning for Santa Barbara County to be in effect until conditions improve. At this time, air quality in Santa Barbara County is expected to continue to be affected through at least the end of this week.

An unprecedented number of large wildfires throughout California are producing significant smoke that is being held in the upper atmosphere and is reaching ground level throughout the state. This is a dynamic situation, and local air quality conditions can deteriorate quickly. Stay alert to local conditions by visiting ourair.org/ todays-air-quality or fire.airnow.gov.

Levels of smoke and particles, and areas affected, will vary. If you see or smell smoke in the air, be cautious and use common sense to protect you and your family’s health. Westerlay Orchids breaks fundraising record for CEF

Carrying on a rich tradition of community outreach and support, Westerlay Orchids announced that the company’s fourth annual week-long fundraiser for Carpinteria Education Foundation Inc. (CEF) has surpassed last year’s figure by raising $23,819 for local students.

Westerlay owner and president Toine Overgaag noted the company’s responsibility to the community goes beyond the greenhouse doors: “We would not be where we are today without a strong local network behind us. This community’s success is our success. We both grow and thrive when we work together, and CEF is doing a great deal to ensure that Carpinteria’s next generation gets the support and resources they need during this extremely tough time.”

One hundred percent of the proceeds will be used to fund local hotspots, internet access and technology for CUSD families in need.

During the fundraiser, the family-owned flower business pledged to donate 100 percent of retail shop proceeds from Aug. 31 through Sept. 5 to CEF with funds earmarked for technology required for successful distanced learning. Westerlay hopes that these need-based resources will help to bridge the digital divide and allow students to participate in online learning with their peers.

For more than 25 years, CEF has remained dedicated to the academic success of Carpinteria and Summerland students.

The non-profit partners with local schools to provide scholarship opportunities and other essential resources to the city’s youth. CEF also helps shape the Carpinteria Valley’s future by offering students skill-building in such areas as science and technology, language arts, humanities, culinary arts and agriculture.

Say “hello” to Carpinteria’s new pediatrician

Originally from Pennsylvania, the Carpinteria Health Clinic’s new pediatrician, Dr. Kara Garcia, started her post on Aug. 3 after Dr. Peggy Dodds retired from the position. Garcia brings her enthusiasm for helping children and families, particularly mothers, as they navigate breastfeeding and caring for newborns, teenagers, “and everything in between.”

Pediatric medicine runs in the family for Garcia, whose father is also a pediatrician. Garcia studied at Haverford College outside of Philadelphia before beginning medical school at Penn State University.

She later did her residency in pediatric medicine in Oakland. Her father, now retired, has moved back to his native home of Colima, Mexico, an hour north of Manzanillo. By living in Santa Barbara County, Garcia feels closer to her father, and can regularly see her brother and mother who live in Goleta. Garcia and her husband have two children; and in addition to medicine, Garcia shares a passion for coffee roasting with her husband. The couple owned three coffee roasting shops in Pennsylvania before relocating to California.

Since arriving at the clinic last month, Garcia has been busy seeing patients and preparing to continue Dr. Dodds’ work for the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) project in coordination with the Carpinteria Children’s Project. “It’s been really nice, the whole staff is really wonderful and patients have been understanding,” said Garcia. “They miss Dr. Dodds but they’ve been really sweet and nice about welcoming me to Carpinteria.”

The pandemic has impacted how many people are visiting their primary care doctors, said Garcia, noting that “doctor ’s offices have been generally

weirdly quiet as people are trying not to go to the doctor. So, for a while we were like, where are the patients? We just want to see patients. We want to make sure kids are OK and make sure they get their vaccines.” The worry for Garcia and other doctors is that children are falling behind on their vaccines and not coming to the doctor even when they need to. But for Garcia, coming to the doctor for regular and annual appointments is still important and the risks are low. “We’re really careful about making sure patients are screened and don’t have any symptoms,” said Garcia, “If a patient has symptoms, we’re seeing them in a tent outside. We’re taking lots of precautions to stay safe and we’re also doing a lot of telehealth for people, so they don’t have to come into the office. We’re doing everything we can to try and get people to see their doctor.

In the beginning we were all scared we were sick, who has it? But now that fear has calmed because we are all being so careful and now I’m thinking about my patients a lot.”

Garcia also hopes to find ways to encourage outside play for patients. She noted how in California, all year round, children and families can spend time outside and she’s hoping she can spark the love for outdoor activities that she has in her patients. In her free time, Garcia likes to be at the water with her threeyear-old son, who is surfing already. “It’s been wonderful,” she said, “at low tide we get to see hermit crabs and snails. It’s so cool.”

In Carpinteria, Garcia has found a special town where because of its small size, she can get to know her patients. She added, “I’m happy to serve the community and get to know people and become a part of it.”

Dictionaries arrive for third graders

M AT T D U N C A N There I was, all ready to sit down with my family to watch Disney’s new live-action version of “Mulan.” We have a subscription to Disney Plus, so I thought we were good to go. Then, to my horror, I discovered that it costs an additional $30 to rent it! No way! My wife pointed out that Disney is probably losing a lot of money during the pandemic. Oh give me a break, Disney, you’ll be fine. She also pointed out that if we went to a theater, we would have paid at least $30. OK, fine, whatever … I’m still not buying it.

Instead, I sent the kids to bed and sought out an outlet for my disgust—one that would also lighten the mood a bit.

I decided on “Get Duked!”—the newly released British horror comedy. This movie is totally free on Amazon Prime (if you have a membership).

And I guess “Get Duked!” is kind of like “Mulan.” Both are coming-ofage tales—about becoming a capital-M Man—at least nominally. Though, instead of fighting the Huns, the main characters in “Get Duked!” fight British aristocracy.

And these characters are not, hmmm, let’s say, as genteel as Mulan. They’re pretty crass. And the swordplay is much less elegant. (Also, in case it’s not clear, “Get Duked!,” unlike “Mulan,” is not family friendly.)

The main characters are four teenage boys. Three of them—Duncan (Lewis Gribben), Dean (Rian Gordon) and DJ Beatroot (Viraj Juneja)—are bad kids.

They’re troublemakers, miscreants, delinquents, bad seeds. The fourth—Ian (Samuel Bottomley)—is a good kid, but too sheltered and childlike for his own good.

What brings this motley crew together is the Duke of Edinburgh Award. This is a trek across the Scottish highlands that teenage boys have been doing since bygone eras as a rite of passage. Get to the end of the trek, survive the perils of the wilderness, and you’re a Man. Or something like that.

At first things go exactly as you’d expect. They screw around, act like buffoons, whine and yell at each other, posture, fight, goof off, etc.

But then they see someone. It’s a very proper looking gentleman, adorned with fine leather boots, a handsome hunting jacket, and one of those Scottish golfing hats. The boys are bit far off, so they can’t be sure, but they think he sure looks like the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Duke (Eddie Izzard) also has a rifle—he’s out on a hunt. And what the boys could be forgiven for not realizing at first is that the Duke is hunting, not deer or pheasant or some other beast of the wild, but them.

The Duke shoots at them while taunt-

ing them with very high-society commentary about youth and purity and aristocracy. The Duke is later joined by The Duchess (Georgie Glenn)—both wearing creepy masks and both tormenting the kids.

So what starts as a coming-of-age story quickly becomes a kind of strange horror movie involving aristocrats, and later, anarchist farmers, pagan ritualistic symbols and zombies.

The kids do their best to fend off their foes. They have some skills, but they’re not very bright. They also get really high on mushrooms, which may or may not have helped. The local police seem to be onto something, but they’re even more incompetent and focused on the wrong things than the teenage boys. So it’s sort of a race to the bottom for this skirmish between the youth, the old guard and the hapless police.

“Get Duked!” is fun—amusing. The kids are sometimes annoying, but they can be boyishly charming too. And the setting—the Scottish highlands, with kids and masked-wearing nobles, with a backdrop of freestyle rap—is a unique set of flavors that adds some kick to the movie.

“Get Duked!” is also lazily trying to do something more—to be a kind of commentary on Brexit and generational politics in Britain. But this layer of meaning is pretty limited. The movie itself doesn’t take it very seriously (not that it should), and I couldn’t detect anything particularly insightful there.

If I were more entertained by the antics of teenage boys, I suspect that I would have enjoyed this movie a lot more. But, I admit, I couldn’t really get into it. I guess you get what you pay for (or don’t pay for).

“Get Duked!” is rated R for drug content, language throughout including sexual references, and some violence/ bloody images.

Rotarians donated and delivered nearly 200 dictionaries to be given to all Carpinteria Unified School District third grade students as part of their “dictionary skills” curriculum. The service project began over 12 years ago and Spanish-English dictionaries were recently added for English learners. Over 2,400 dictionaries have been passed out over the years. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, parents will pick up the dictionaries with student work packets that teachers prepare every other Friday. Ten Rotarians put nameplates in each dictionary, and all students receive them as a gift from Morning Rotary and can keep them for use at home as well as in school when classes resume.

Bill Tobin from Shelter Box announced that the organization’s corporate headquarters is now on the South Coast at 101 Innovation Place in Santa Barbara. With warehouses in 10 locations around the world, Shelter Box can quickly launch relief efforts anywhere in the world. Rotarians in England started Shelter Box, and it is now officially recognized by Rotary International. In 2019, 24.9 million people were displaced by natural disasters and 79.5 million were displaced by conflicts.

Matt Duncan, a former Coastal View News editor, has taken physical but not emotional leave from Carpinteria to be a philosophy professor at Rhode Island College. Volunteering is at the pit of Avofest

The California Avocado Festival, Carpinteria’s annual celebration of peace, love and guacamole, is going virtual this year on Oct. 2-4. Last year, the event brought in 80,000 attendees, a number unthinkable given today’s public health regulations. This year, the 34-year-old tradition finds a new home online thanks to the volunteers keeping the magic alive.

The typical legion of helpers has been reduced to a team of roughly 40 strong, as well as a dedicated seven-person board and sponsorship group coordinating with local businesses. Volunteer energy has focused on their weekly Farmers Market booth where they sell Avofest merchandise to raise funds for scholarships and keeping office doors open. Volunteers are also helping piece together the digital event experience, filming segments like musical performances and a guacamole contest to be screened over the festival weekend.

Carie Smith Carie Smith has volunteered at Avofest for five years, but has 25 years of experience as a volunteer coordinator. She lent this expertise her first year helping in this role for Avofest, but has since also chaired the ice cream booth. Typical responsibilities include directing nearly 70 volunteers and purchasing supplies. Every year, she anticipates seeing her high school helpers grow up and share their post-graduation plans with her. Now, her work turns to the Farmers Market and the virtual guacamole contest. Smith anticipates the festival’s triumphant return in 2021.

Why are you volunteering this year?

CS: The show must go on. I hope we can do something to give people a sense of normalcy for that weekend. Just that first night, when I stood at the booth at the Farmers Market, people would run up and say, “Wait, Avocado Festival? You mean there’s going to be an Avofest? Oh my gosh, we were wondering if this was going to happen!”

Lorraine McIntire The board’s newest member, Lorraine McIntire, joined earlier this year to aid in the digital transition. Since moving to Carpinteria, McIntire annually volunteers in areas across the festival. This year, she is assisting with marketing and public relations, sponsor outreach, the Farmers Market table and financial planning. She is most excited to help with the guacamole contest. Avofest has partnered with local media and Executive Chef Nirasha Rodriguez of The Food Liaison to create a digital cooking competition using recipes submitted by Carpinteria’s guac lovers.

McIntire wants to honor the work of thousands of past volunteers who have dedicated themselves to making Avofest the “face of Carpinteria.”

Do you have any special memories from volunteering at Avofest?

LM: The doggie daycare. I love dogs and I just loved playing with all the dogs, big dogs and small dogs. Audrey Pietre, who’s a dog trainer and has a doggie daycare, she was a really fun person to learn from. Dogs are like children, and dog owners were so grateful they had a safe place to leave their dogs with a lot of loving volunteers.

What keeps you volunteering during a pandemic?

LM: People’s need and the need to support. Most of the groups that I volunteer for have a mission and a purpose that’s still needed in spite of the pandemic. In fact, it’s needed even more. We’ve been at it for 34 years and we want to give these

CS: I am a firm believer in volunteering. I’ve got a list a mile long of what I’ve done over the years. My friends and family are like, “Seriously, why don’t you relax and enjoy your own time?” And I think it’s been bred into me watching my mom that everybody should do their part.

EM: We have all had to shift gears because of the coronavirus and reimagine how to still connect with the community and keep the festival alive and fluid.

Sometimes it feels as though we are on a merry-go-round as we try to navigate the ever-changing dynamics of the circumstances. Our focus is to continue to raise money for scholarships and to help the nonprofits in any way we can.

What does volunteering for Avofest mean to you?

EM: It has been an honor to work with every board member over the years. They are all amazing people and even though one board member may have to take his or her leave, a new one steps in with new ideas and energy which can revitalize the board. We have a great camaraderie and enthusiasm working together for a common cause. And the festival is always an amazing event. We seem to pull it off whether we feel we are ready or not.

Carpinteria charm evolved from the volunteerism that has established this community, starting in the ‘40s when there was a camper park in town and the women used to take food down and socialize with the campers, to the development of all of our nonprofits. The strength in this community is on its volunteers.

They deserve a lot of credit for how this community has shaped and molded itself.

We are a community of only 14,000 that has an army of volunteers.

Santa Barbara Public Library accepts virtual arts workshops proposals

Beach burgers Part II: The Spot

To hear many Carpinterians tell it, for an actual great hamburger you had to wait until The Spot opened in 1958. Originally Sheri’s Café for about a half-dozen years previous to The Spot, the place was a tiny shed-like structure. Cecil and Garnet Hendrickson gave it its new name.

They poured all of their know-how and love into the place. Quality meat, homemade fixings, and often open early in the morning and into the night, so long as there was a customer to serve.

The Hendrickson’s weren’t in business long, only five years, but they set a standard that subsequent proprietors have maintained to the present day. Even the original signs that the Hendricksons painted over those of Sheri’s Café look the same. Indeed, a mythos and mystique, or aura, has developed around the small stand.

The Hendricksons sold the business to Albert and Lorraine DeBus. They were there from 1963 to about 1970. It is interesting to note that at the present time, the wooden building looks the same, signs and all, to when the Hendricksons opened it. For that matter, it still looks like Sheri’s Café, the original burger place.

Next up at The Spot, the proprietors were Ken and Laverne Woods for the first half of the decade of the 1970s. Then, Bill Watson, a retired law enforcement officer who gave it a try for six months but found it too taxing for a retiree. According to Ted Barajas, Watson sold him the business over cocktails at the Palms for $15,000 in 1976.

Ted and Della Barajas took over and achieved a 22-year run at The Spot. The Barajas family added Mexican food to the menu and created most of the outdoor patio seating. When the covered patio was put in, there was a curious disconnect because it stood away from the restaurant, but perhaps this was in keeping with the property owner’s desire not to change the

original structure of the stand that had proven to be so popular.

In an interview with the Carpinteria Herald in 1988, Barajas said he could measure his success by remembering the count of frozen meat patty boxes he ordered for the many burgers he had served over the years. He reached one million sold after 12 years. In regard to

the oft-quoted story that renowned chef, and Montecito resident, Julia Child had praised The Spot’s burger as the best in California, Barajas set the record straight.

He said that it was Cecil Smith, the L. A. Times TV critic, who wrote that The

According to the Santa Barbara Assessors Office, there were no business establishments at the corner of Linden Avenue and Dorrance Way prior to 1950. Sheri’s Café is registered at the Assessors Office as late as 1961, although The Spot was already in business by 1958. As a 10-year old in 1952, Leo Martinez worked at Sheri’s Café. He remembered that he would walk over to the Carpinteria Mutual Citrus Association at the corner of Linden Avenue and 6th Street to take food orders. Now living in New Mexico, when asked what the packing house workers ordered, he responded, “Hamburgers! They loved the burgers at Sheri’s Café.”

Martinez also remembered that Sheri’s Café was initially a “pop-up” stand, that is, a meal on wheels food truck, trailer-like. It was replaced by the shed-like structure you see in this picture, like the food truck, a temporary structure. Who could have imagined that it would become The Spot, and remain in place, as is, to the present time.

The Spot has served Carpinterians and tourists for 62 years under six different proprietors. Make that about 70 years if Sheri’s Café is included in the count.

THE SPOT: Continued from page 24 Spot burgers were the best. Child was a friend of Smith’s and had passed on The Spot’s high reputation to him, but Barajas doubted that Mrs. Child had ever actually eaten a Spot burger.

Currently, The Spot is owned by Jesse and Teresa Bustillos, the sixth proprietors in the line who have managed the business – seventh if Sheri’s Café is included in the count. They took over from the Barajas family in 1999. The Bustillos family, therefore, should soon have the longest proprietorship at The Spot. One look at the daily long lines in the middle of a terrible pandemic tells you that they will easily reach the 23-year mark, and be the new #1 in longevity.

When my sons were young, I gave them the lecture on not driving if they had been drinking, but I never even thought about giving them the lecture on staying safe if the police stopped them and gave them a rough time. Robert Horry who is Black and a former NBA star, told on TV of how he explained to his son that if the police stopped him, his son’s job was to come home to his father. If that meant curling up while the police hit you, then do it, but come home!

I can’t live in someone else’s skin, but I can be open to what issues are important to people of different backgrounds and ethnicities. I can push for civil rights and the end of racial discrimination. I can vote for people who press for changes that will bring us together rather than drive us apart. And maybe, if I keep trying, I might finally get just a little bit tan.
