League of Women Voters to hold immigration update community forum

Meet Roy Lee Candidate FOR

The League of Women Voters will hold an immigration update community forum on Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Faulkner Gallery of the Santa Barbara Public Library, 40 e. Anapamu St., Santa Barbara.

The forum aims to inform the general public about “what is happening today” regarding immigration and the current treatment of new and current immigrants in Santa Barbara county. The discussion will include general information about Federal and State actions, but will be centered on local activities of existing and emerging community groups, public officials, volunteers, affected immigrants and law enforcement personnel. The event’s invited speakers are Anahi Mendoza of the Santa Barbara county immigrant Legal Defense center; Jacqueline inda of the Santa Barbara response Network, and Erica Reyes of Congressman Salud Carbajal’s office. Sheriff Bill Brown will also speak and answer questions. Live and recorded broadcasts of this forum will be available. The event is free and open to the public. Handicapped accessibility is available from the public garage accessed from Anacapa Street next to the library.

Hospice honors Marybeth Carty

Hospice of Santa Barbara held their annual fundraiser event “Heroes of Hospice” on Sept. 12, 2018 at the Four Seasons Biltmore, Coral Casino in Montecito. Marybeth Carty, executive director of the Natalie Orfalea Foundation and steering committee chair for Compassionate Care of Carpinteria received the 2018 Ambassador Award.

Carty was selected for her contribution to expanding hospice services in Carpinteria.

“The news that I’d been selected to receive the award was quite a surprise, as bringing Hospice services to Carp has been a collective effort in every way,” said Carty. “I’m honored to be associated with an organization that is so heart-centered, addressing the holistic needs of the seriously and terminally ill and changing end of life conversations.

“We have the ability to transform our community by opting to plan well to end well. Completing your Advanced Healthcare Directive is a way to begin that important conversation.”

Carpinteria Unified School District Superintendent Diana Rigby and Carpinteria Children’s Project Executive Director Maria Chesley were also recognized for their work in expanding hospice services in Carpinteria.

Each year, Hospice recognizes the outstanding organizations and individuals who play an important role in service to those in our community and/or support the organization’s mission of providing care to anyone experiencing the impact of serious illness or grieving the death of a loved one. The luncheon raised approximately $150,000 to support Hospice’s programs.

Those clock-workorange kicks belong to Carpinterian Gerald Enthoven, the only cyclist from Santa Barbara County riding in the Arthritis Foundation’s California Coast Classic Bicycle Tour. On Sept. 14 my granddaughter Ivy Jo and I watched a Santa Barbara County helicopter land on Viola Field.

There were Carpinteria-Summerland fire trucks, water rescue equipment and many firefighters standing by. Ivy Jo and I approached the firefighters to ask what was happening. Brian Lambardie, one of the firefighters, told us Water Rescue training would be taking place at Rincon Beach. We hurried home, gathered beach gear and headed to Rincon Beach.

We were mesmerized watching what looked to us like many grueling trainings for rescuers. However, our amazing firefighters made it seem easy as each rescue was made, literally, within seconds.

Carpinteria and Summerland residents and visitors, you can rest assured our firefighters are well-trained. We are in good hands.

I want to support our City Council for the fine job they are doing.

Being a community representative like a council member is not an easy one.

It takes time and dedication to understand the many issues addressed by the Council.

All three of our incumbent council members participated in local government by attending council meetings, studying the issues and speaking out publicly on those issues prior to running for office. They already had a grasp of how our city works before running for office.

Having seasoned members on City Council retains our historical memory.

City Council, time for a change

I agree 100 percent with Debbie Murphy in her letter to CVN on September 13, 2018 (Vol. 24, No. 52) expressing her desire to “have fresh voices on our City Council.” There have been many questionable decisions made by the current council members that have left many of us scratching our heads. In addition to fresh voices, it is also time for fresh

eyes to see that the business and tourism community receives a little support from the current Council. It is extremely frustrating when a large contingent of the community shows up at a council meeting to express their support or opposition to a matter and then watches the council totally ignore their opinions. It is definitely time for a change.

An amazing experiment

I have some quick comments on Eva Vallejo’s letter “Glass Houses” (CVN, Vol. 24, No. 51). Ms. Vallejo criticized Ms. Thorn, who is not a socialist, for possibly partaking of Social Security and Medicare. This may come from a lack of understanding as to whose money it is and where it comes from. I worked from age 17 to 65. My husband is 78 and still works full time. From every single pay check the government takes a premium.

You pay into both Medicare and Social Security. But you cannot use it until you are 65 years old. In my husband’s case, he has paid those premiums every paycheck for more than 50 years. He is still working and still paying. So, if Ms. Thorn partakes of those systems, when she is old, it is because she paid into them all of her working life.

As for socialism, Marxism and communism; I ask anyone in this town to name one successful, prosperous, free country in the world operating under any of these systems. There is none. That is why when people have the opportunity, they run from these places. No one runs toward these countries. Notice not one member of the Hollywood chattering class, that vocalizes so much loathing for America, has moved from here where life is good to Cuba, Venezuela, Russia or any other socialist type country.

Socialism assaults the individual and cripples the human spirit. It has always and will always stifle creativity, openness, free expression, work and progress. That is why “resist” seems like such a negative platform for one party to choose. In our country, politicians are our employees.

Why on earth would I hire someone to do nothing, solve nothing and fix nothing?

In respect to recent letters: I hope we can agree freedom of speech and right to peacefully assemble are still in effect. I have some thoughts.

What is Antifa? Most of us had never heard of it until recently and we would not support extremism along with the KKK, White Supremacism, the Nazi Party, and any other organization using violence or hate to harm others. As to which group is causing and has caused the most violence in the U.S. I refer you to the resources gathered by the Southern Poverty Law Center at splcenter. org/. Illegal aliens? Since when is any human illegal or alien? How humane is separating children from their parents as a punishment for seeking freedom?

Blaming our American propensity for violence on any other nationality indicates a true blindness of those not willing to work to find a way to diminish the numbers of humans killed by American family, friends and strangers with guns.

Humans are shot and killed while attending church, concerts, school, work and in homes—murdered by U.S. citizens who are predominately white males. Before blaming marginalized populations, research the accuracy of your statements

Anti-Trump sentiment? Oh yeah, full of it! Have you ever read his tweets, listened to him speak, watched his behaviors and actions, heard his lack of respect for truth and facts? If you still think there is no problem with this person representing and supposedly supporting this country, I fear for your humanity, morality and judgement.

I am a proud liberal and I celebrate diversity in our country and our world.

Just look at our histories and depth of cultures, ethnicity, people and the richness they bring to life on this earth. We are humans and we are not all alike and isn’t that grand?

Measure U Update: Gen 7 buildings turn CUSD campuses toward the future

Approximately $20 million in Measure U funds have been spent since work began on projects in the Carpinteria Unified School District in early 2017. The most visible progress occurred this Summer at Canalino Elementary, Carpinteria Middle and Carpinteria High schools with the delivery and installation of Gen 7 modular classrooms. Gen 7 buildings are pre-manufactured and assembled on site, which saves money on construction costs compared to traditional “brick and mortar” structures. Built for 50-years of service and equipped with environmentally friendly features such as natural lighting and efficient heating and cooling systems, Gen 7 classrooms can be configured for specific subjects such as chemistry or physics, and each one is digitally integrated for 21st-century teaching technologies.

The costs are significant, but aging portable buildings and classrooms on district campuses needed replacing. Carpinteria voters approved the $90 million Measure U bond measure in 2014, to be funded by property taxes levied at a rate of about $47 on each $100,000 of property value in Carpinteria.

Twenty-one Gen 7 classrooms have been delivered to the three campuses, including a number of those to CMS this week, for a total of $7,046,970 not including sales tax.

An additional $5,247,743 went for the cost of foundation work, which was complicated by ground conditions at both Canalino Elementary and Carpinteria High schools.

Sales tax for the modular Gen 7 buildings is based on the state tax rate times 40 percent of the contract value.

CHS received three science classrooms, two science labs (biology and chemistry) and one prep room, as well as two computer classrooms. Measure U funds also paid for new roofs on the admin and cafeteria buildings, along with new walkways for classroom wings and restroom remodels.

Five of the modular buildings will form a new science wing at the high school. which will be ready for classes at the beginning of the Spring 2019 term. A front entry security system is being installed and will be completed by the end of September.

The Canalino Elementary School campus received six Gen 7 buildings, three of which will be occupied by Carpinteria Family School. The remaining three buildings will serve fifth-grade students.

Landscaping is now being completed and these will be the first Gen 7 buildings to be used by CUSD students, beginning mid-October.

Looking forward, Measure U staff plan to sell an additional $40 million in bonds in November for upcoming projects, including fire alarm systems, additional Gen 7 buildings at Aliso Elementary and Summerland schools, a new administration building at CHS and campus and classroom modernizations across the district.

It’s back-to-school, my favorite time of the year—new school supplies, meeting new teachers and seeing friends again, all make September an exciting time for Carpinteria Unified School District students, parents, teachers and staff.

The beginning of a new school year also brings challenges that we take very seriously. School safety is number one.

Our primary responsibility is to ensure that all students have a safe environment in which to do their best.

According to the National Institute of Justice, “No place is completely safe, but schools are the safest place overall for children to be when not at home with a caring, responsible adult.”

This year, CUSD has a number of safety and security measures in place such as locked doors, controlled building access, visitor sign-ins, employee badges, and hallway and campus supervision. All teachers and staff participate in online and simulated safety trainings with the Hour Zero Emergency Program for K12 Schools.

At each school site, Mental Health Teams comprised of the principal, assistant principal (CMS, CHS), school psychologist, school counselor and START mental health therapists meet weekly to monitor student wellbeing, as well as struggling students who may display warning signs of potential safety/discipline problems. The CUSD Safety Committee meets monthly to discuss safety issues and make recommendations to the District’s Leadership Team for continuous improvement.

To do this, we need the entire community to do their part in keeping our students safe. In just these first three weeks of school, two students have already been hit by drivers in Carpinteria Avenue crosswalks (luckily the students did not sustain serious injuries).

Parent and community member Beth Cox wrote in her CVN Viewpoint in August (Vol. 24, No. 49), “as a driver commuting through our town, please slow down, have some patience, and think of our children out there.” Please heed her advice.

Our crosswalks are filled with students walking, running and biking to and from school, and traffic is heavily congested with freeway, road and school construction projects. Teachers and parents are reinforcing pedestrian safety with their students. CUSD is working with the City, Sheriff and consultants from Safe Routes to School to reduce the risks of accidents.

Please be alert and careful, and we will all enjoy a terrific new school year!

Kissed by God

The Carpinteria Skate Foundation will present “Kissed by God,” a documentary about three-time world surfing champion Andy Irons, at the Alacazar Theatre, 4916 Carpinteria Ave., on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 5 and 7 p.m. Irons was the only surfer capable of stopping the great Kelly Slater in his prime, but his struggles with bipolar disorder and drug addiction claimed his life in 2010. A busy fall for Summerland Citizens Association

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s Last week’s Summerland Citizens Association meeting was positively popping with news, new initiatives and future plans. Here’s a brief recap.

Developing a long-term plan strategy

Over the last few months resident John Heil has been interviewing locals, business owners and visitors with the ambitious goal of delineating specific goals and ambitions to guide the town’s future development.

While Heil plans to release a final report on the project at the SCA’s October meeting, he provided an overview of some findings. The 70+ folks who participated in focus groups were most interested in fire and safety, oil on the beach, Caltrans’ redo of the Evans Avenue underpass, parking and revitalization of Summerland’s downtown area.

Not surprisingly, business owners shared many of the same concerns, with parking issues near the top of the list.

Many expressed frustration at what they saw as the county’s byzantine requirements to get a project through the approval process.

Heil found that 61 percent of the visitors he interviewed were from Southern California and that many have “returned,” after avoiding the area because of the fire and flood. There were essentially no long-term visitors, with most staying only a few hours. They reported thinking Summerland “very cute,” but thought it needed more energy and vitality.

Caltrans’ plan for redoing the Evans Avenue underpass, Summerland’s “gateway,” is a fairly big deal, and Heil had drawn up a list of “design criteria priorities” based on the community’s needs.

On the list: improved vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian access; enhanced safety; greater security for pedestrians; superior lighting; elimination of parking; easily maintained cleanliness and maintenance; improved aesthetics and landscaping.

Lookout Park

Gracie Disgracie’s latest

Plans for expansion of the public space in Lookout Park are proceeding at the county’s usual pace, but good things lie ahead. The Parks Department will be moving the big electrical panel from the park’s east end to the west where the camp host is now located. Architectural and landscape plans for the coveted view place are finished, and the county is now costing out improvements. Funding is always a big issue, so the county and community will be looking at phased development. This means walking areas and some plantings may come first, with seating and “art themes” to be phased in later.

Fire district

Suzy Cawthon, SCA board member and Summerland’s rep on the Carpinteria Summerland Fire District Board, was over-the-top pleased to announce the district’s new fire chief, Greg Fish. Fish who brings 30 years of experience with the Glendale fire district, is a prize catch (sorry, he must get this a lot), according to Suzy. He will start the job Oct. 1.

Summerland’s BAR

A “best practices” methodology governing the local architectural review board got a pretty thorough discussion, with the SCA board deciding to vote on or reappoint BAR members on a yearly basis. Jeff O’Neill, BAR chair, announced that plans for the new Summerland School would be up for final review on Oct. 2. Interested parties should plan to attend the meeting, which starts at 7 p.m.

Farmer & the Flea, Sept. 23

Summerland’s newest downtown event, featuring the unusual combination of a farmer’s market and a flea market, will take place at the post office parking lot from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organizers promise a nice mix of artisans and makers, flea market items, flowers, art and more. And there will even be a D.J. Readers already know about my Jack Russell terrier Gracie and her predilection for getting into serious jams in her crazed quest for food. How she got stuck in the compost bin, how she wound up in a skunk trap, how this 15-pound dog got a two-pound bag of sugar through the dog door, how she ate an entire tray of Christmas cookies, another time, a box of truffles. The list goes on.

We’re careful when we leave the house because Gracie can open cupboards. She’s raided the under-sink trash and shelves where food is stored. She is adept at opening packages and has chewed holes in garments to get at treats carelessly left in pockets.

The dog has a gut of steel. She’s thrown up her ill-gotten gains just once. That was the night of the truffles, when Gracie, high as a kite on chocolate, raced up and down stairs, vomiting chocolate pools.

There was only one incident of extreme indigestion—until recently.

I had made a great protein drink in the bullet blender—some greens, banana, berries, a big scoop of protein powder, a dash of almond butter. Turns into a lovely, thick, berry-purple drink. Enough for two tall beer glasses. I drank mine and Roger had started on his and left it on the table when he walked away for a few minutes.

assumed he’d finished it all. (We’re both getting a little forgetful about this kind of thing.) The usual culprit in missing food cases couldn’t possibly have pulled off draining an entire glass and left it standing.

So we blamed poor memory. Until I went outside to find a trail of purple puddles. We could only shake our heads in wonder. Talk about finesse!

One good thing: Hearing bird calls overhead and looking up to see a big flock of Canada geese heading north. (But why north? And why now?)

Carpinterian playwright Terre Ouwehand will speak at the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara after the DramaDogs perform her monologue “Lutah Maria Riggs” on Sept. 29.

Local author brings Lutah Maria Riggs to life

GranVida Gallery’s inaugural exhibit, “Keeping it Local,” features the works of several local artists including photographer Ted Rhodes and painter Janey Cohen. Rhodes’ images convey the vibrancy of the picturesque Central Coast while Cohen’s watercolor painting “Carpinteria Bluffs Path” captures the tranquility of the walk to the seal sanctuary on a cool morning.

The GranVida Gallery is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and located at 5464 Carpinteria Ave. Ten percent of gallery sales will benefit the Carpinteria Arts Center.

Architect Lutah Maria Riggs helped redesign Santa Barbara’s now signature Spanish Colonial Revival style after the 1925 earthquake.

on saturday, sept. 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. there will be a staging of Terre ouwehand’s “Luta Maria Riggs” monologue performed by e. Bonnie Lewis of the dramadogs Theater Company at the Architectural Foundation of santa Barbara, 229 e. Victoria st., santa Barbara. ouwehand is a Carpinteria-based author and former santa Barbara City College professor who has penned several plays and novels. A collection of ouwehand’s monologues from the point of view of historical women were collected in “Voices from the Well 2: dramatic Portraits of extraordinary historical Women,” published by old hand Press.

Ouwehand’s monologue “Lutah Maria Riggs” gives voice to the first woman in California to be named a Fellow of the American institute of Architects. Working with architect George Washington smith, Riggs is credited as an author of the santa Barbara style—the spanish Colonial Revival aesthetic that characterized the redevelopment of downtown santa Barbara after the 1925 earthquake. some of santa Barbara’s most iconic buildings were designed by Riggs, including Lobero Theatre, el Paseo, the library at the Botanic Gardens and Vedanta Temple.

Girls Rock to hold Raise Her Voice benefit

Girls Rock sB is gearing up for their benefit concert Raise Her Voice to be held on sept. 30 at the Lobero Theatre in santa Barbara.

The concert will be headlined by sophie Rose and feature live screen printing, a silent auction and raffle. Among the 70 girls who will perform at the event, several are from Carpinteria, including sophia Guerra, ella Bailey and isabel Gorman.

Guerra, who is 13 and attends Carpinteria Middle school, is also entered in a song writing contest to perform one of her Carpinteria Middle School student Sofia original songs on the Lobero Guerra will perform at the Girls Rock Raise stage. “i actually wrote this song Her Voice benefit concert at the Lobero about a boy, who i had deep feelings for. it’s about how i would Theatre. care for the person, and would never stop,” said Guerra about her original song contest entry.

For Guerra, Girls Rock has been an important part of her life over the past six years, “it teaches self-love and individuality through music,” Guerra said. “i also can express my feelings in my music. When i can’t explain something in writing, i will sing it. And, I find ways to write songs when maybe I can’t speak about a personal problem to a person directly.”

Live at The Alcazar: It’s comedy and magic

Some Carpinterians may not know it yet, but promoters have already set in motion plans to turn their beachside city into a key destination for fans of comedy and magic with the third annual Comedy & Magic Festival live at The Alcazar Theatre, Sept. 29 and 30.

Live comedy has had a resurgence lately, according to Ron Cicero, the Los Angeles-based producer who is putting on the marquis event with his production company Ladies & Gentlemen, Inc. Cicero has 30 years in entertainment and is currently producing a documentary on

the cartoon “Ren & Stimpy.”

Last year’s festival performed for a full house at the Alcazar, and Cicero is working to make the annual event bigger each year. “The goal is to continue to grow the event into a family affair with a European-style street fair during the day and more adult-oriented comedy and magic in venues around Carp at night.

“We’ve seen the success avocados have had in Carp and we’re thinking, ‘Hey, we’re at least as entertaining as fruit.’”

For Cicero and his team, Carpinteria is the perfect location for a national comedy and magic festival. It’s close enough to L.A. to attract world-class talent, yet

quaint enough to provide an escape from the big city. The comedy festival can also bring an uptick for local businesses.

Festival goers will stay, dine and shop in the area. Plus, comedy tends to attract a higher end, more thoughtful crowd, noted Cicero. “There’s less of an impact on residents than, say, a music festival like Coachella.”

Moreover, the Alcazar Theatre provides an intimate venue for the audience to connect with performers while still accommodating a sizeable crowd.

This year’s festival will be hosted by Tamer Kattan (Tru-TV’s 2017 Comedy Knockout Winner) and features national

headliners Laurie Kilmartin (CONAN, Last Comic Standing, Comedy Central), Michael Palascak (Tonight Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert) and Andrew Goldenhersh (Magic Castle Magician of the Year), as well as breakout performers Chris Fairbanks (HBO’s Crashing) and Chris Mitchell (Magic Castle Regular).

Carpinterians are all-in for Coastal Cleanup Day Photos by Debra herrick On Sept. 15, across Santa Barbara County, from Rincon to Jalama, 1,129 volunteers collected 972 pounds of recyclables and 3,403 pounds of trash from 68 miles of coastline. It was the county’s 19th annual Creekweek and Coastal Cleanup, the largest international volunteer event focusing on the environment in the world.

In Carpinteria, over 100 people came out to clean up waterways and beaches at Franklin Creek Park, the Salt Marsh and Carpinteria State, Jellybowl and Rincon beaches. Along Franklin Creek, Carpinteria State and Jellybowl beaches, environmentally conscious volunteers collected 55 pounds of trash and 112 pounds of recyclables. The most unusual items removed from the environment were a giant teddy bear, an electric bike battery and a piece of steel that weighed 20 pounds.

The local effort is part of International Coastal Cleanup, an event that started 30 years ago and now involves 100 countries around the world.

Here’s the scoop: Rori’s Artisanal Creamery to open shop on Linden

On Sept. 18, members of the new Seaside Makers Collective on Linden Avenue walk into an empty storefront to begin the installation of their work stations and sales displays.

Carpinteria has been home to Rori’s Artisanal Creamery since the company first began eight years ago, with store fronts in Montecito, Santa Barbara and Santa Monica. Rori’s will now have a hometown ice cream shop in downtown Carpinteria at 751 Linden Ave., taking over the space that has been the Rainbow Ice Cream and Yogurt Parlor for over a decade.

“I’ve had the factory here for eight years,” said Rori Trovato, owner, “This is where it all began and now I can properly serve the community from which we make all our ice cream.”

Seaside Makers is a curated collection of artisan made gifts for bath, body and home. “I wanted to highlight an important part of our community that was missing in downtown Carpinteria,” said Seaside organizer Kristin Fraser of The Grapeseed Co. “This area is home to some amazing makers, artists and business women. Our new collective will highlight and celebrate that by offering so much more than a great place to shop. Warriors smother Flashes, continue winning streak

BY ALONZO OROZCO PHOTOS BY ROSANA SWING Two familiar foes clashed last week when the Fillmore and Carpinteria High School football teams met for the first time as members of the new Citrus Coast League at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium. Jumping out to a 20-7 lead in the third quarter, Carpinteria smothered the Flashes’ comeback bid in the fourth quarter to hold on for a 27-14 victory. The win puts the Warriors at 4-1 overall and 1-0 in League, getting an early jump for a run to win League.

For the second week in a row the Warriors offense started fast, as quarterback Vance Keiser found Jacob Mata wide open over the middle for a 35-yard pass play, putting the ball at the Flashes’ 10yard line. Keiser would then connect with Abel Reyes for a 10-yard touchdown toss to put Carpinteria up 7-0 with 3:28 still remaining in the opening quarter.

But it wouldn’t take long for the visitors to strike back.

Following a punt by Fillmore’s Ricky Calderon that put the Warriors back to their own five-yard line, Carpinteria fumbled and the Flashes pounced on the ball inside the 10. Three plays later, Fillmore quarterback Jake Saviers connected with Paget Ekelund who made a juggling catch to a complete a three-yard scoring play, tying the game at seven as the first quarter came to an end. “This is how all our league games are going to be, we’re going to have to come and battle, compete and make some plays …,” said Candaele.

With 9:58 to play, the home team took advantage of a turnover themselves when Ever Santamaria snatched a fumble to put the Warriors at the Flashes’ 26.

Santamaria had a big game on defense with six tackles on the night and was helped by Reyes who finished with eight.

Keiser again hooked up with Mata, this time on a 35-yard scoring strike to make it 14-7. “They (Fillmore) were crowding the line of scrimmage so much—that’s Van our quarterback—we have a little check we can go through and he went to it a couple of times, that’s on him,” explained Candaele of the two long completions to Mata. Carpinteria took the one-touchdown lead into the third quarter.

The Warriors widened their lead when Keiser caught Brady Sturdivan on a pass that resulted in a 58-yard run for the score and a 20-7 lead with 8:31 left in the quarter. Sturdivan has been a matchup problem for Warriors opponents the past three weeks. Behind the balanced running of Bryce Nunez and strong arm of Saviers, the Flashes moved the ball to the one-yard line and finished the drive on a one-yard run, cutting the lead to 20-14.

Fillmore mounted another drive inside the Warrior 10 as the final quarter began. Jacob Macias tackled Hugo Virto for a loss on second-and-goal. “If you watch your film and watch a play like that, you say, ‘Kids care about what happens,’” said Candaele. After a short gain and incomplete pass, Carpinteria took over.

The offense came up with another big play, as Keiser once again connected with Sturdivan and the Warriors’ wide receiver charged 86 yards to land near the Fillmore 10. Two plays later, another 10-yard lob to Sturdivan made the score 27-14. Keiser completed nine of 14 passes for 237 yards and four touchdowns, while Sturdivan caught six balls for 197 yards and two TDs. Isaac De Alba led Carpinteria in rushing with 23 yards on seven carries, and also made eight tackles on defense.

The Warriors continue Citrus Coast League play as they host Hueneme on Friday, Sept. 21, with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Valley Memorial Stadium.

September 12 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team defeated La Reina in a non league match, 9-9 (72-69). Jessica Santillan, Josie Gordon and Sydney Endow all took care of their number-three players by a wide margin. In doubles, Amy Perez/Karla Marin swept their three sets, and in two of those they were down 4-3 and came back to win 6-4. Lexi Persoon/Jeannette Carrillo won two sets while Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma won one set. “This was a great effort by both teams as momentum seemed to switch round by round depending on the matchups of that particular round,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria is now 6-3 overall.

September 13 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team defeated St. Bonaventure in a non-league match, 10-8. In doubles, Lexi Persoon/Jeannette Carrillo went 2-1 but had a great comeback against the Seraphs number-one team,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Karla Marin/Amy Perez went 2-1 also, as did Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma. In singles, Vicky Delk, after an opening round defeat, beat the number-three player 6-0, then beat their number-two, 6-2. Sydney Endow went 1-2 and Jessica Santillan won her only match. Carpinteria is now 7-3 overall.

September 14 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team traveled up the hill today to face Division-I Cate in a non-league match, and fell 14-4. Josie Gordon and Vicky Delk each won a singles set. “Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma seem to be settling in with each other as they keep getting stronger,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. They took one set off of the Rams as did Karla Marin/Amy Perez. “I think our girls know they can compete, and it was great to see their confidence grow throughout the match,” said Bryant. Carpinteria is now 7-4 overall.

September 18 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team won their inaugural Citrus Coast League match today at Hueneme, 16-2. In doubles, the Warriors had all three teams sweep with Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma, Amy Perez/Karla Marin and Jeannette Carrillo/Lexi Persoon all winning. In singles, Josie Gordon and Sydney Endow had sweeps. Emma Lapidus won her only set, winning 6-4. “And although she did not win today, I was happy with how Jessica Santillan competed,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria is now 8-4 overall and 1-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

September 12 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team attempted to stop Chaminade, but fell to the Eagles, three games to zero. “Chaminade serving and hitting power proved triumphant over the Warriors,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. Match scores were: 25-3, 25-18 and 25-7. The Citrus Coast League record for the Warriors in now, 1-1, and their overall record is 1-3. Carpinteria will travel to Santa Paula for a league match today.

September 13 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team lost to Santa Paula in four games, three games to one. “Mary Sawlaw, setter number-six had a great night under all the pressure …,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia of Sawlaw who had 27 assists. Number-14 outside hitter Yaneli Silva had eight kills and three aces. Libero number-four, Mariela Guerrero had 21 digs. The Warriors lost the first two sets of the match, 25-13 and 25-18, and won the third, 25-17 before falling 25-22 in the final game. “A handful of critical errors cost the Warriors the match in set four,” explained Garcia. The league record for Carpinteria is now 1-2, and their overall record is 1-3.

September 11 - The Carpinteria High School cross country team competed in Citrus Coast League Meet number-one, which ran at College Park in Oxnard with the girls finishing in fourth and the boys fifth. The Girls top finishers were: Shayla Alvarez who finished sixth with a time of 20:14. Savannah Alvarez took 11th at 21:10, and Kate Cooney took 26th at 23:00, while Karen Gamez was 28th at 23:41. Meanwhile, for the boys Caleb Classen finished 13th at 17:30, Dexter Gordon 22nd at 18:26 and Victor Rinaldi 25th in 18:33.

September 15 - The Carpinteria High School cross country team ran in the 2018 Ojai Invitational with the girls finishing first in the two-mile race and the boys finishing sixth. In the boys three-mile, Caleb Classen earned a medal, finishing 45th

September 13 - The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team challenged the Malibu Sharks as their first opponent in the Malibu Tournament, dropping an 8-6 decision. “Despite the loss, Ali Hamadi and Solomon Nahooikaika made sure Malibu knew that Carpinteria would not go down easily,” said Warriors assistant coach Sergio Castaneda with Hamadi scoring four goals and Nahooikaika scoring two. “Ian Reed, fully recovered from his injuries, came in ready to play and had a phenomenal defensive performance, netting multiple steals and making the Sharks work for every pass that came in his direction,” said Castaneda. The third quarter ended with the Warriors down 6-5. The Sharks scored two more goals in the final quarter with the Warriors scoring one to net the final result. Carpinteria’s overall record is 4-2.

September 15 - The Carpinteria High school boys water polo team in their second day of the Malibu Tournament beat Calabasas, 10-9. “Junior Ian Reed was able to receive a great pass that translated into a great shot that earned the win for Warriors,” said Carpinteria assistant coach Sergio Castaneda of the goal that broke a 9-9 tie in the final quarter. The overall record for the Warriors is 5-2 with a tournament record of 2-1. The last game of the tournament for the Warriors was against Pacifica, and they came out ahead 10-3. “A notable shot came from Gabe Medel, who threw a strong and precise corner shot that could not be stopped,” said Castaneda whose team got out to a 6-0 lead. Freshmen Mateo Handall and Coby Gonzalez had stellar performances,” said Castaneda. The Warriors overall record improves to 6-2 with League play still to follow, and they ended up 3-1 for the tournament.

September 13 - The Cate School girls volleyball team beat Bishop Diego in last week’s match, 3-1. Down 21-16 in the fourth set, junior libero Grace Blankenhorn served the final game out to win 25-21. Cate had several players with multiple kills.

Junior Kenzie Davidson had eight, freshman Chidera Chukwumerji and Elise Guerrand-Hermes both had seven, and junior Maya Blattberg led the team with 11.

Blattberg and sophomore Grace Johnson had three blocks each to contribute to the team total of nine blocks. Cate is now 2-0 in league play.

September 18 – The Cate School girls volleyball team beat Santa Clara, sweeping all three games 25-11, 25-19 and 25-19. “Junior setter Riley Borchardt did an exceptional job tonight in all rotations,” said Rams coach Greg Novak. Borchardt picked up six aces, nabbed three kills and passed a 3.0 percentage. Elise Guerrand-Hermes and junior Maya Blattberg both had eight kills apiece. “Overall, we had a solid performance from everyone on the team, each player came in and contributed,” said Novak. Cate, 3-0 in League takes on Carpinteria in a non-league match tonight.

a monthly muse melinda wittwer “It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.” ––Ralph Waldo Emerson If I’m in a good mood (and that is a big “if”) I usually enjoy meeting new people.

I’m fairly adept at small talk since I know how to chat about family, hobbies, books, sports and cars among other subjects. As we converse, these new acquaintances don’t usually push my buttons to get me riled up, because they don’t even know what my buttons are. They don’t remind me about some of the less-thanspectacular escapades of my youth, or give me advice about their latest diet or ask why I have blobs and smears of white clay dust around the interior of my car.

With new acquaintances, I usually stick to safe subjects so politics and religion have to wait until we really progress up the friendship ladder.

I enjoy these new contacts. They usually don’t ask for much help. They believe me (or at least appear to) even when I stretch the truth. They think I’m wise because I have white hair and am perfecting my old lady charm. But even with all this stimulation revolving around new-found friends, there comes a time I need to call up that old buddy from college, the one who was my roommate, my matron of honor, and had her first child the day after my first son was born. We may not talk for months, but when we do we just pick up our friendship as if we phoned each other every day.

I consider myself lucky because each fall a group of friends from college have continued to get together for a weekend of “remember-when time.” This event is a little bit reunion, a little bit escape and a large mix of party, relaxation and appreciating each other. A large number of our group are, or were, teachers, but we also have several lawyers, a flowernursery owner, a philanthropist, a computer tech, an airline official and several crazy people. Some of these women have been married for over 40 years, some are widows, some are divorced and single or divorced and remarried or hoping to be divorced. Most of us have children and now grandchildren. Over the years, we have certainly shared many success stories and also many worries and concerns that come up in every family’s life.

Now that we’re older, it seems that conversations often revolve around all

Hip replacements, knee replacements, cataract removal, cancer operations and even a bit of nip and tuck around the eyes and face. What makes these conversations more interesting is the fact that we can remember each other playing intramural volleyball or softball, dancing through the night, swimming at the beach, hiking and just thinking nothing at all about sitting on the floor or worrying about how we were going to get back up. This gives us a good perspective of both the past and the present—how we were and how in the world we got to our present condition.

Now that most of us are retired, we have taken up a variety of hobbies with grandchildren heading the list. Many like to travel to exotic places or take cruises or ride ponies in Mongolia. We compare notes and make plans about future trips.

We have several accomplished singers in our group, a tri-athlete, a long-distance bicyclist and a potter. In many ways, we have lived charmed lives yet amidst all the good we have experienced, there is also pain. Most of us have lost our parents, a few have lost husbands. Some of our adult children have handicaps of one type or another. Some of us have ill husbands. Some of us still have to work.

We are an ordinary group of women, strong women. We do not often see each other outside these yearly get-togethers, yet we have built strong bonds because we share so much history. Some of these women are religious, some only tour churches, some are Democrats, some are Republicans, some are health nuts, some drink a bit too much, but we have a support system in place that has lasted years with very few disagreements. We know each other’s secrets, and we like each other anyway.

Melinda Wittwer first moved to Carpinteria in 1972 and taught mostly junior high students in Oxnard during her 25-year career.

Now retired, she enjoys pottery, writing, books and travel.

Nomura speaks in Guadalajara, Mexico Carpinteria Morning Rotarian Wade Nomura was recently in Guadalajara, Mexico to speak on behalf of the Rotary Foundation and the partnering Rotary Districts of 5240 (Central California) and District 4140 (Central Mexico). The District Conference of 4140 Mexico included the seven states of central Mexico and was attended by 220 Rotarians. The group discussed over 10 potential and upcoming projects, including a water project being initiated by the Rotary Club of Carpinteria and the City of Tototlan, Jalisco, that will benefit 13,000 people.

By ChriStian BeamiSh Friday, Sept. 14, was one of those days Carpinterians wait for all summer: tourists long gone, the sun just low enough in the sky to lose some of its intensity and cast a golden hue against the sand.

City of Carpinteria Ocean Recreation Coordinator Matt Simon led a group of Rincon High School students through warm-up exercises before helping them launch through the surf on kayaks as part of the school’s physical education program. Principal Barnaby Gloger said of his students, “This class was their first time on kayaks.” The high schoolers were in the second-of-four weeks kayaking on Wednesdays and Fridays through the month of September, with equipment and instruction provided by the City Parks Department. Instructors Matt Simon and Rincon High School graduate Parker Birchfield taught the basics of sea kayaking. Principal Gloger credited Rincon High School Office Coordinator Veronica Nixon with following through and organizing the kayak class. “She is much more than an Office Coordinator,” he said, “and constantly leads the charge for what’s best for the kids.” Students paddled out to the reef off Carpinteria Point, enjoying good ocean visibility before making their way back to shore in a strengthening afternoon breeze. “The kayaking sign-up sheet fills up fast,”

“Don’t get between the beach and the kayak,” Matt Simon warns students of the potential danger in navigating the surf zone.

Gloger said, “there is a lot of positive energy, (getting on the water) changes your perspective, you realize the world is twice as big.” Gloger noted that physical education was the first goal of the program, but added that learning about science in nature and self-development are add-on benefits of outdoor education.

Friday, Sept. 14, was the second kayaking class Rincon students had taken. The course will continue each Wednesday and Friday through September.

Dear eMpty, Your son has many options, you have few. His earning years are ahead of him and yours are behind you. He can get student loans or scholarships which he will repay as he starts earning a living.

Depending on what plans you’ve made for your non-earning years, you could sell your home and downsize and keep money in reserve to help him out now and then. People are living so long that there is a real danger of outliving your resources. At some point, you may want to consider ways of making a little extra money. Get a good financial advisor before you do anything and always put “needs” before “wants.”

Utrecht and beyond with CVN

Leroy Adams and Ranell Hansen brought the Coastal View News along on a trip to France and the Netherlands, where they had a visit with Jan Tillman in Utrecht.

Jan was Carpinteria High School’s Foreign Exchange Student in 1964. They also attended a performance of a play in St. George du Didon, written and produced

by Carpinteria resident Albert Parker. Ranell makes the costumes for Al’s plays.

The two-week trip was rounded off by visits to Toulouse, Avignon and Paris.
