HopeNet brings community together for World Suicide Prevention Day Over 85 people lit candles at the Seal Fountain on Tuesday evening, Sept. 10, in love and support of people impacted by suicide. The annual Candlelight Vigil was organized by HopeNet of Carpinteria and held on World Suicide Prevention Day. Carpinteria City Councilmember and HopeNet Boardmember Fred Shaw opened the vigil with a warm welcome to candle bearers. First District Supervisor Das Williams read a poem he selected for the occasion and presented HopeNet with a resolution from the Board of Supervisors on suicide prevention.

Calling attention to the need to support community members in grief, Alejandro Vasquez of Hospice of Santa Barbara, said that grieving includes denial and isolation, anger and resentment, bargaining, depression, confusion, distress and acceptance.

First responders were also present with Brian Roberson, battalion chief of the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District stating that first responders endure stress and grief and often need to talk to a sympathetic person to process their experiences.

Additional speakers included Colette Schabram, CEO of Pacific Pride Foundation, who noted that LGBQT+ persons had an increased risk of suicide and that services are available through Pacific Pride. Emiliano Campobello, who was impacted by suicide when his son took his own life, spoke compassionately of his son’s pain

and struggle during his life, and how important it is to connect with your children honestly and openly.

Following the talks, community members gathered around the Seal Fountain with candles for a moment of silence before saying the name of a loved one who died from suicide.

Therapists from the County Department of Behavioral Wellness were at the Seal Fountain to offer counsel if needed.

Westerlay Orchids donates $18K to schools

Carrying on a rich tradition of community outreach and support, Westerlay Orchids has donated over $18,000 to the Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF) which provides funding for programs in the Carpinteria Unified School District.

The funds represent a week of retail proceeds at Westerlay’s from Aug. 30 to Sept.

6, raised as part of the lead-up to Carpa-Cabana, CEF’s annual benefit dinner.

A second-generation, family-owned business, Westerlay is well known for its orchids and is a rising star in business philanthropy. In recent years, Westerlay has donated to local non-profits, CEF, the Cancer Research Center of Santa Barbara and 17q12 Foundation.

“Along with a deep commitment to environmental sustainability, we pride ourselves on impactful community outreach,” said Toine Overgaag, Westerlay’s owner and president. “We would not be where we are today without a strong local network behind us. This community’s success is our success—we both grow and thrive when we work together—and CEF is doing a great deal to ensure that Santa Barbara’s next generation gets the support and resources they need to make an impact.”

CEF will use the donation to provide scholarship opportunities and other essential resources to students in partnership with CUSD schools. “We are so fortunate to have Toine and Kandie Overgaag’s support yet again,” said Casey Balch, president of CEF. “Their generosity has enabled students to study arts and STEM/STEAM at our local elementary which would otherwise not have been available to them.”

Montecito Motor Classic to benefit local police

When the montecito motor Classic rolls into the santa Barbara Polo Field on Sunday, Sept. 22, locals will find an intriguing Carpinteria connection.

The popular annual car show was first launched by dolores morelli Johnson, whose family has deep roots in Carpinteria. Johnson’s great grandfather was Peter Jimenez, an iconic character of the late 19th and early 20th century in Carpinteria Valley. Photographs of Jimenez sharpening an axe and sawing wood can be seen at the Carpinteria Historical museum.

Johnson’s father, martin morelli, was the catcher for the local baseball team whose proud photo in letterman’s sweater was hung in the hallway at Carpinteria High (now middle school). “there are a whole lot of Carpinterians related to me,” said Johnson, founder and director of the montecito motor Classic. “it’s a pretty big extended family we have in the valley.”

Johnson started the auto show eight years ago as a fundraiser for special olympics, and since then the motor Classic has developed into a car show that specializes in helping different local nonprofits. This year’s event will benefit the Police Foundation, Police Activity league and drag Racing Against Gangs and Graffiti. “many participants describe the motor Classic as a ‘Concourse,’ but without any of the attitude or price tag,” said Johnson. “it is all open to the public, so people have the opportunity to see these absolutely incredible cars with no charge to get in.”

Unlike car shows where entry fees can by high, entry to the montecito motor Classic is free (parking at the Polo Club costs $10).

Among the event’s biggest sponsors is michael Armand Hammer, chairman of the Armand Hammer Foundation. Hammer has been the event’s annual presenting sponsor since its first year.

“At the Polo field we will have a wonderfully roomy layout to showcase the supercars and other classic cars we are bringing in,” added Johnson. “these are

A new feature in place for this year is Kids Alley, which will have fun cars for the younger set to admire and explore, such as the Batmobile, and other specialty cars. mcConnell’s ice cream will have a booth where kids can present their model cars for judging.

Climate change is real, action time is now

“We have met the enemy and he is us!” This famous line by cartoonist Walt Kelly from “Pogo the Possum,” the comic strip character appeared on a poster to commemorate the first Earth Day in 1970. It was also used to promote an environmental awareness that as “we all are responsible for the damage we do to planet Earth so we should do our share to clean it up.”

Fifty years later (and remembering it so clearly all those years ago surely dates me!) it still resonates—way more so today. Climate change is real. And it’s happening now. “We have to start treating the crisis like a crisis—and act even if we don’t have all the solutions.” This from 16 year old Greta Thunberg, the Swedish student activist (no one is too young to make a difference) who is calling out the lack of political will to address climate change by holding student-lead school strikes—now world-wide—to make their young voices heard.

Action time is now. Beginning on Friday, Sept. 20, through Friday, Sept. 27, Climate Strikes reach across the region and the globe. Join us.

Support schools, stop spewing misinformation

Both of my children have attended CUSD since Pre-K. My husband Grant Cox attended Aliso, Carpinteria Middle School and Carpinteria High School. We are, and have been, avid supporters and advocates of our public-school system in our awesome community for years.

In February of this year, for multiple reasons and issues, including my uncle being diagnosed with cancer and dying, we pulled our son out of Carpinteria Middle School. He now attends Laurel Springs, an online accredited private school. He will resume at Carpinteria High School for his ninth-grade year.

He did not fit in the box of Carpinteria Middle School, and that is okay.

I applaud Superintendent Rigby for her efforts, and for implementing a position at Carpinteria Middle School which is, and has been, so desperately needed.

I applaud the CUSD School Board for supporting her efforts. However, if we really think about it, the funds that came to CUSD for this positive position are no different than other sources of funding— it’s just a different crop, and a legal crop.

The growers of Carpinteria have always given to our schools and to a plethora of other nonprofits in our community, and they continue to do so. May I suggest to those who are again complaining, that they come out of their boxes and stop trolling and spewing unfounded, irrelevant, misinformation on social media sites such as Facebook, Nextdoor, or in the L.A. Times, Santa Barbara News-Press, KEYT and Coastal View News.

Cannabis could have been done elsewhere

Although I was fortunate to move to the hills east of Carpinteria just prior to the influx of cannabis stench, it is sad to miss our proximity to the beach. Now, reading about another takeover of a Carpinteria flower greenhouse by Graham Farrar, it is even more sad to see the disaster wrought by SB County supervisors. Instead of destroying a wonderful beach town, why couldn’t this product have been grown along SR166 east of Santa Maria? There is already agriculture out there and lots of empty land with few residents. I think the people that are allowing the ruination of Carpinteria should be removed—meaning the county supervisors. Start with replacing Das Williams. This conflict could have been so easily avoided.

Hwy 101: the slow road of progress

I live along the 101 between Bailard and Casitas Pass Road. It’s been months since any significant work has been done along Via Real. Instead, a small (but diligent) workforce moves from one small spot to another, while leaving most of the project abandoned. As this project drags on, safety is compromised by bottlenecks, congestion and abruptly merging on-ramps. Auto emissions and motorist delays are multiplied by inestimable amounts and for indeterminable durations.

Sadly, gone are the days when such projects moved apace. “The Empire State Building is a symbol of everything New York City is known for: ambition,

innovation, a competitive spirit and sheer will,” CNN reported. “Construction began on March 17, 1930, and President Herbert Hoover officially opened it on May 1, 1931.” And Peter Phillips noted, “The (Santa Monica) freeway opened for traffic April 11, thus completing the work a mere 66 days after it began, and getting traffic moving again in only 85 days after the (1994 Northridge) earthquake.”

Schools shouldn’t take cannabis money

I was shocked to see a photo of Carpinteria Unified School District leaders (except for the high school principal) lined up at a tour of a cannabis growing facility. The school board should not accept donations from a cannabis company. Besides this, the community is currently trying to obtain a buffer between these cannabis plants and “sensitive receptors” such as schools and residences. The school should get funds from appropriate donors, not corrupt themselves which such shenanigans!

As one who has to suffer the stink and chemicals from these growers every night, I am disgusted with the school personnel supporting them. And no, I am not against cannabis or its use—just as I am not against alcohol. But schools should not be promoting these businesses just to get a few bucks.

The Dems have it wrong

Thousands of people are trying to get into our wonderful country. Hong Kong residents are waving the American flag as they protest Communist oppression, using it as a symbol of desired freedom and opportunity. However, listening to the Democratic presidential hopefuls at the recent debate one might think we are living in the bowels of Hades.

I’m conservative, but I have voted for Democrats in the past who presented sensible ideas for realistic solutions to existing problems without promoting total financial nonsense and fear. There were no such people on that debate stage. No one came close to a reasonable explanation as to how all the free stuff promised would be paid for. For instance, Elizabeth Warren’s “two cents from the rich” mantra is pure fantasyland math. Taxes come from yearly incomes. Warren proposes taking wealth that has already been taxed.

As anticipated, many of the candidates pushed climate change fear. We’re doomed within 10 -12 years if we don’t make drastic changes, including eliminating fossil fuels.

Recall that in 2006, Al Gore (An Inconvenient Truth) predicted doom within 10 years by spouting climate change fear.

Consider the totally unrealistic Green New Deal demands on the U.S.: Are the Dems simply assuming that major polluters (China, India, Russia, Japan, European Union) will buy into this earth-saving rhetoric?

Beto O’Rourke’s hate-generating comment that the U.S. should use 1619 as its date of creation gets the prize for pure absurdity. Despite the constant use of the term “racist” by the Dems and the biased publicity the media provides for isolated events, race relations are now considerably better than what they were in my youth.

Hey, we’re fine. We’re far from perfect, but let’s appreciate and work with what we have. Everyone would benefit from sensible Democratic presidential candidates, and a non-dysfunctional Congress.

Carpinterian Toni Wellen honored for work against gun violence

The Coalition Against Gun Violence will pay tribute to its co-founder and chair of a quarter century, Toni Wellen, at its 2019 Anniversary Celebration/ Fundraiser on Sept. 29. Wellen will be honored for her many years dedicated to helping make Santa Barbara County a safer place to live, and for her tireless effort in organizing with countless gun violence prevention organizations across the country to raise awareness of gun violence as a health and safety Toni Wellen has championed gun issue. Neighborhood group forms to oppose private helicopter pads

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, the County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the county’s first-ever application for a private helicopter pad, submitted

by Summerland resident Patrick Nesbitt. This week, CVN received an email from a newly formed group called “Citizens Against Private Helicopters in the South County.”

The message states that they have formed “a grassroots group to oppose this permit based on what we see as the negative effects of private helicopter proliferation including noise, safety, environmental damage and impacts on our non-urban community character.” For more information on this group, contact StopTheChop@Yahoo.com.

Workers continue needed utility repairs on Hwy 101.

Southbound Hwy 101 exit at Linden closed until 2020

The Highway 101 southbound off-ramp at Linden Avenue will remain closed until early 2020. Crews are building a new off-ramp, along with extensive drainage improvements, new retaining walls and safety barriers.

This week through Saturday, Sept. 21, there will be temporary stop signs added to the Ogan Road and Linden Avenue intersection. Permanent traffic signals will be installed with the final intersection and roundabout improvements. Hales Lane residents will enter and exit at Casitas Pass Road. Crews will close the section of Via Real between Hales Lane and Vallecito Road for the next stage of construction on the Via Real connection.

On the Linden Avenue Overcrossing, crews will install wood forms, place rebar and pour concrete for the approach areas leading up to the new bridge. Along Linden Avenue, Ogan Road and Old Linden Avenue (near Nipomo Drive), Frontier Communications, the Carpinteria Valley Water District and Southern California Edison will have utility work in the area and on the overcrossing. Flagmen will be directing traffic as needed between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Crews will be grading soils and working on drainage improvements for the parking lot and creek access along Via Real by Carpinteria Creek Park. New drainage improvements are also being installed along Via Real.

Free lecture series to begin on Carpinteria Natural History

The Natural History of the Carpinteria Coastal Plain will offer a free series of talks starting on Monday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m., at the Carpinteria Veteran’s Memorial Building. Anyone who would like to become a docent in Carpinteria’s natural areas is invited to come. Docents are needed at the Salt Marsh, the Bluffs and Franklin Trail. Community members of all ages are welcome to attend.

Avocado growers and cannabis farmers fund added first-responders for Avofest

Graham Farrar of Glass House Farms, Rick Shade of Shade Farm Management and Ed Van Wingerden of Coastal Blooms and Avoganic heeded the call for added funding for this year’s California Avocado Festival. Funding from the three last-minute donors will support added fire personnel and paramedics at this year’s festival.

Avofest organizers have shouldered cost increases from heightened security measures for this year’s festival. Cannabis and avocado growers contributed $4,500 to cover the expense of increasing the number of critical personnel for the weekend event.

Farrar, owner of Glass House Farms, said, “When we heard that the Avocado Festival needed support to cover added expenses that are totally outside of its control, we all jumped at the chance to help out. This is a true community event that everyone is looking forward to.”

Carpinteria writers are invited to a public reading on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Carpinteria Library’s multi-purpose room, from 7 to 9 p.m. Writers will have the opportunity to read a piece of their own writing—any genre—for five minutes. 140 runners test speed and endurance on Franklin Trail On the morning of Sept. 15, 140 runners hit Franklin Trail for the Island View Trail Run’s high-climbing 4-, 10- and 16-mile courses. Athletes ranging in age from 9 to 80 came from all over California and beyond to race through the cool, low-elevation fog and, in the case of the longer courses, emerge in the sunshine to tackle the upper reaches of Carpinteria’s well-loved trail.

Conquering 3,780 feet in elevation gain, Matt Dubberley of Santa Barbara came in first overall in the 16-miler in 2:21:35. The first Carpinterian to finish the 16-miler was 62-year-old Gregorio Perez, who finished in 3:21:46 for 14th place.

In the 10-miler, which includes 1,750 feet of elevation, Danny Madden of New York came in first overall in 1:20:27. The first Carpinteria finisher was Connor Nemetz in 1:31:07 for fourth place overall. Kim Runhaar of Carpinteria, the first female finisher, completed the course in

1:51:36 for 10th place overall.

In the 4-miler, which has 800 feet of elevation, Travis Zehntner of Goleta finished in 29:36 for first overall. Top Carpinteria finishers were Christopher Power in 34:18 for fourth overall and Melissa Cronshaw in 35:49 for sixth overall. More than 20 volunteers supported the Santa Barbara County Trails Council event, with staff posted at aid stations at the halfway points for each course. Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District EMTs were also on hand to provide emergency medical support if needed. Run proceeds will help to restore the Franklin Trail, which suffered severe damage in the Thomas Fire.

I’m sure most people don’t give much thought to what happens after the flush.

Or where the water from your morning shower ends up after it circles down the drain. That’s ok. A big part of our job at the sanitary district is making sure that the underground sewer pipelines in our community are working properly and that all the wastewater from our customers’ homes and businesses makes it safely to the treatment plant.

There are over 45 miles of buried sewer pipeline beneath the streets of Carpinteria. This network of pipes ranges in size from 6- to 21-inch diameter, and in some locations the pipes are over 20-feet deep. In the olden days, sewers systems were largely “out of sight, out of mind.” Today, however, we take a very proactive approach to maintaining this critical infrastructure. Not only does the district regularly clean all 45 miles of underground sewer pipeline, we also implement a comprehensive inspection program designed to identify problems before they become serious.

Like most things, sewer pipeline inspection has gone high tech. The district uses a remotely controlled, high-resolution video camera system to inspect the underground sewer system. It’s a harsh environment, and our CCTV camera is built into a waterproof and very rugged steerable crawler that can travel as far as 1000 feet down a sewer pipeline. The darkness underground is illuminated by powerful LED lights. The camera head rotates and zooms to look at the full circumference of the pipe and high-quality video images are sent to tablet computers or monitors inside the inspection truck at street level.

In real time, a highly trained operator reviews the video stream and uses a computer software system to document and quantify any defects observed in the pipeline. A standardized defect coding system is used so that observed problems can be quantified and accurately compared to defects throughout the system.

11 anniversary seemed an appropriate time to discuss what to do when an emergency arises. John Heil, head of the town’s recently formed emergency preparedness committee, reported that four members of his team had completed an emergency preparedness training program.

Introducing the possibility of establishing a neighborhood watch program, Heil displayed an impressive map of Summerland sectioned into 36 areas, each of which would have a neighborhood watch captain (volunteers needed—see Summerlandnow.org). He will be pursuing a comprehensive contact system to be activated when emergencies of any kind occur.

Reeve Woolpert explained that the group is looking at lights, columns, interior slope abutments, new sidewalks, walls and railings.

The goal of the committee is to identify areas where the community can “establish a sense of identity.” This could include artistic enhancements like the tilework murals on Linden in Carpinteria. Stamping, color, texture and pattern, instead of the standard “scratched” cement favored by Caltrans, can also be considered.

Tops of walls and fences could undulate, suggesting sea and mountains.

Tile features could be inserted near the top of the cement walls. Another idea is to place flag standards on columns or lighting standards so that flags, perhaps designed by school kids, could signal special events.

An obvious feature might be a photograph on tile of Summerland’s old beach oil field. Another would be the popular sun logo developed by the Person Ryan gallery—or a different sun version created by a local. (In spite of fogs, Summerlanders think of their town as sunny!)

There will be lots of community input regarding design elements and color choices that represent the town.

Woolpert emphasized that while we can do things that recognize our historic past, the new Summerland entrance should be a place displaying art that is uplifting, forward thinking, modern and lively.

Reading through a list of Hillary’s accomplishments, publications, recognitions for her work, commendations and awards, one wonders how one person could have accomplished so much—even given 75 years of active life. With more than 5,000 dives, she was even inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame.

Crystalizing a summerland identity

With Caltrans plans for a redo of the town’s entry point, the Evans Avenue underpass, the community has a chance for input that could make Summerland’s front door both aesthetically pleasing and distinctive.

The Summerland community identity and projects committee, a group of local architects and designers, are working with Caltrans and SBCAG in an effort to identify and refine areas in the Caltrans generic undercrossing plan to establish a sense of community identity and place.

2019 Avocado market rundown: Volumes down and prices up

California Avocado Festival is upon us, a time to celebrate Carpinteria’s favorite fruit and an opportunity to look back at how this year’s avocado season measured up for local farmers who tend the roughly 2,000 acres of avocados grown in Carpinteria Valley. It’s not a true “harvest fest” this season, because most fruit locally and throughout the state has already been picked and packed for the year.

Major packinghouses have shut down, awaiting the start of next year’s harvest in spring of 2020.

Statewide volume: 210 million pounds

Avocado growers throughout the state knew that the 2019 crop would be light, even dangerously light. A decent California avocado year yields over 300 million pounds and a really big year measures over 500 million pounds. Going into the 2019 season, the California Avocado Commission estimated the statewide harvest would be 175 million pounds, so as the fruit count climbed to 210 million, it was a welcome surprise, albeit still a meager crop.

A heatwave in July 2018 is the main culprit for this season’s diminutive crop size. Fruit in inland Ventura County and parts of Santa Barbara County was decimated by the heat. Some farmers in Fillmore and Santa Paula reported only 25 percent of typical volume this year.

With avocado production, the fruit sets an entire year in advance, so weather events from 2018 impact the 2019 crop.

The fires and floods in late 2017 and early 2018 also impacted the crop size, and for orchards charred by the Thomas Fire, there has been a delay in the supply of new Hass avocado trees that has set-back replanting for two to three years for some growers.

If we focus on the hyper-local picture, in Carpinteria Valley, 2019 was a stronger year than the statewide harvest, as the fruit was spared from the July 2018 heatwave and Thomas Fire at low elevations near the ocean.

2019 saw high prices for growers and consumers

The simple formula of supply and demand drove avocado prices to very favorable levels for ranchers this season.

Consumers then absorbed the high value

Local workers tend to 2,000 acres of avocados in the Carpinteria Valley. of avocados. Will Carleton, local organic avocado rancher and packer at Las Palmalitas Ranch, reported in August that a Silicon Valley grocery store was selling organic California avocados for $5 apiece––what’s good for growers isn’t always good for consumers.

As demand for avocados climbs every year across the United States and the rest of the world, producers cannot keep up and prices continue to rise. Avocado ranchers enjoyed $1.77 a pound for midsized avocados in early September, which is a favorable price but well short of this season’s late-June peak of $2.27 per pound. Organic California fruit, which occupies a premium niche in the market, sold for $2.62 a pound in late June. Those are average prices gleaned from major handlers of California fruit.

To put prices into perspective, in August 2018, growers of conventional avocados averaged $1.50 per pound— and most were pleased with that price.

Some seasons see the price barely crack $1 per pound—despite rising comfortably above the $2 mark for several weeks like this year.

Last year’s summer heatwave helped bring down the 2019 California avocado season’s crop.

Mexico is the leading avocado producer internationally.

In pockets of Carpinteria Valley where volumes were relatively strong, avocado ranchers reported having a very good year, despite the statewide drop in volume.

The avocado world revolves around Mexico

The domestic avocado market cannot be discussed without mentioning Mexico, the nearly 2 billion pound elephant in the room.

As of mid-September, Mexico had shipped 1.46 billion pounds of avocados into the US this year and is projected to send over 2 billion pounds for the year. Compared to a paltry 210 million pounds grown domestically (California grows nearly all of US avos), Mexico rules the market.

California producers typically wait for windows in which Mexico’s supply pipeline dips. Threatened border closures with Mexico never materialized, but there were a couple of favorable dips in the Mexican supply mid-summer. Those helped to fuel the strong prices and led to most of California’s fruit coming off the trees between April and July.

There are a couple of prevailing philosophies about avocado imports. Since Mexico is an avocado behemoth, it can supply the ever-growing international appetite for avocados. That’s music to avocado ranchers’ ears. Demand is strong and growing. However, if it’s the middle of California’s harvest season, and Mexican producers truck 70 million pounds across the border in a week, prices are

pressured downward by the sudden influx. This season found a favorable window between Mexican harvests, and California producers were able to seize the opportunity.

Most people in the California avocado industry agree that Mexico’s abundance of fruit is a good thing for the domestic and global market— there are plenty of mouths to feed—but US growers find themselves at the whim of a market dictated by Mexico.

Cheerleaders find some fruit and next year’s predictions

Since the 2019 harvest is kaput, Carpinteria High School cheerleaders were left scrambling for fruit to concoct their annual “World’s Largest Vat of Guacamole,” an Avofest staple. Local ranchers like Rick Shade of Shade Farm Management were able to secure enough fruit to allow the show to go on.

According to Shade, next year’s fruit is setting after avocado trees enjoyed their own superbloom this spring. Early estimates for the 2020 harvest are sitting at around 350 million pounds, a better year than 2019, but not quite a superbloom kind of season. Avocado trees are alternate bearing, so the pendulum usually swings from one year to the next.

Warriors lose to speedy St. Gens

13, with some impressive numbers, having outscored their last two opponents by a combined score of 92-0. The Valiants were as good as advertised, continuing their winning ways to a 42-7 victory over the Warriors at Valley Memorial Stadium. St. Genevieve moves to 2-1 on the year while the Warriors fall to 1-2.

Starting the game with good field position on their own 45-yard line, the visitors wasted little time moving downfield. Just over two minutes in, Michael Moulton’s 11-yard touchdown run gave the Valiants a 7-0 lead. scoring pass to take a 14-0 lead with 4:24 still left in the first quarter.

On Carpinteria’s next possession, quarterback Diego Mendez hooked up with Jacob Mata, and the senior converted the reception into a first down.

But the next pass was intercepted by William Parra who returned the ball to the Warrior 37.

“We’ve got to play better, we’ve got to execute—a lot of the mistakes we gave them,” said Warriors coach Mario Robinson whose team trailed 14-0 going into the second quarter.

The Panorama City Valiants capitalized on the Warriors mistakes, with Rodriquez finding Kobe Mendez in the end zone for a seven-yard score to put the visitors up 21-0. Once again, Carpinteria was unable to move the ball on offense, and St. Gens took possession at midfield following a Warrior punt. A few plays later, Taufahema sprinted 37 yards to the end zone for a 28-0 lead, carrying the four-touchdown advantage into the second half.

Hernandez returned the second-half kickoff 46 yards, giving Carpinteria a first down at midfield. For much of the evening, the senior was the Warriors’ main source of offense, tallying 137 yards on six returns. But Canales seized

a deflected pass out of the air for an interception, racing 55 yards to the house, and the score grew to 35-0.

“They’re a good team, they had a lot more speed and size than we did and they took advantage of it,” said Robinson.

“The biggest thing is that we gotta play harder.”

Camdan McWright added a 62-yard touchdown jaunt to make it 42-0, and the score remained the same heading into the final quarter. But lightning struck for the Warriors when running back Will Collins darted 90 yards off tackle into the end zone to put his team on the board with 8:24 left in the game.

“It was a ‘big backs right, 26 power,’ my line opened it up for me, it was a perfect hole,” said Collins. Collins gained 119 yards on 11 carries for the game and has scored six touchdowns on the season.

Mendez completed seven of 18 for 30 yards and Jacob Mata led all Carpinteria receivers with four receptions for 21 yards. For the Valiants: Rodriguez was 16 of 19 and passed for 113 yards, Taufahema ran for 135 yards on just seven carries, and Canales brought down five catches for 66 yards. The Warriors host Nordhoff tomorrow night, Friday, Sept.

20, in their Citrus Coast League opener.

In another “Battle of the 192,” the Carpinteria and Cate cross country teams ended with split results for the boys and girls. The Rams boys won their match, but the girls squad was disqualified after taking a wrong turn on the course, handing the win over to the Warrior girls. Tesfa Asmara took the boys title for Cate with a time of 18:35. Rams sophomore Nick Patrick finished third in 18:52, and freshman teammate Harry McAdam capture fifth in 19:57. Anna DiSorbo captured the crown for the girls with a time of 20:01.

The Cate School Rams returned to football action after a 10-day layoff for the school’s annual Outings Week camping trips. The Rams hosted Sage Oak Charter in a non-league contest. With a few injuries altering the starting lineup, backup quarterback Will Deardorff took the helm and wasted no time getting the offense going, scoring on a QB keeper on the second play from scrimmage.

Deardorff added another score in the first quarter, a nine-yard scamper just one minute later. On the ensuing possession, Sage Oak drove the length of the field only to be thwarted by the Rams on a fourth and goal play from the five-yard line. Senior Elliott Tsai came up with a clutch deflection in the back of the end zone to keep the Saints from scoring. The Rams then drove 75 yards over the next seven plays with senior Khadim Pouye capping the drive with a 20-yard run to pay dirt.

Sophomore Ethan Ligon saw major minutes in just his second football game ever, and ran back a punt return

for a touchdown, his first ever, with 9:22 remaining in the first half. As the Rams built their lead to 26-0 fellow sophomore Matty Holmes took over at quarterback and added a quick score, a four-yard run to put the Rams up 34-0 going into halftime. In the second half, the sophomore running backs, John Endres and Jack Ludviksen, rounded out the scoring in the 48-0 win. Yet another sophomore, defensive back Mason Oetgen, added a key interception to preserve the shutout for the Rams.

Following the game, Head Coach Ben Soto reflected on the work of today’s sophomore-heavy lineup. “We have seen the evolution of this group in practice every day, they were hungry to get some real game action today and they made the most of their opportunities,” said Soto.

With the win, the Rams move to 2-0 on the season. They will travel to Santa Maria this Friday night to take on longtime northern rival Orcutt Academy. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Pioneer Valley High School.

September 10 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team hosted Villanova for their first of two scheduled games this season. The first quarter saw the Warriors go ahead 3 to 1. As the quarters went on, the Warriors extended their lead, concluding the game with a 17 to 8 victory. Senior Nathan Endow scored two goals for the Warriors, and “Sophomore Ben Persoon shut down pass after pass on defense, creating several offensive openings with his speed,” said Carpinteria coach Sergio Castaneda. The Warriors will face Cabrillo this Friday, Sept. 20, at the Carpinteria Community Pool. Carpinteria is now 3-3 overall and have yet to begin Citrus Coast League play.

September 12 – The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team dropped a match to Division-Two Thacher in a non-league match, 15-3. Emma Lapidus led the Warriors again in singles winning two of her three sets. “Sydney Endow went 1-2 but played really well at times,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. “I thought Mercy Torres/Lexi Persoon were competitive in their sets; Valerie Ojeda/ Natalia Perez played really well for the first time together,” Bryant noted. Carpinteria is now 2-3 overall.

September 10 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team faced off versus known rivals, the Bishop Diego Cardinals. With match scores of 27-25, 25-23 and 25-20, the girls from Santa Barbara managed to sweep the Warriors, 3-0 in games. “It was a very exciting match to watch from beginning to end,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. “The Warriors had Bishop right where they wanted them, however, a few critical errors cost Carpinteria set one and two,” Garcia said. Starting outside hitter Number-two Malia Shellabarger yielded five kills, two aces and 10 digs. Libero, Number-14 Emily Montoya picked up 24 digs. Sophomore and setter Number-seven Marlene Sanchez ended with 21 assists. The Warriors are now 2-3 overall.

September 10 – The Cate School girls volleyball team played its first match of the regular season, coming away with a sweep of Garden Street Academy, 3-0. “Freshman players Tatiana von Bothmer and Gigi Geyer excelled on the outside, adding to the successful match,” said Rams coach Greg Novak. “The match was a good introduction to the season and a tune-up for the first tough league match against Foothill Tech.”

September 11 – The Cate School girls volleyball team in their first match in the Tri-Valley League beat Foothill Tech, 3-2. “Senior setter Maya Blattberg ripped several balls down line and Foothill’s libero was there to pop up the ball for an eventual point conversion,” explained Rams coach Greg Novak. Sophomore middle Chidera Chukwumerije led the team in kills with 17 and a hitting percentage of .481. Elise Guerrand-Hermes followed up with 14 kills and Blattberg added 11 kills. Charlotte Weis had five aces off of 19 serves. Libero Grace Blankenhorn had 31 digs and passed a 2.38 on serve receive. “Grace Blankenhorn chased a ball down to the back wall and Grace Johnson managed to send the free ball at least 60 feet across the gym, deep into Foothill’s court which resulted in the match winning point for Cate—a nice way to end the match indeed,” said Novak. Cate is 8-1 overall, 1-0 in the Tri-Valley League.

September 12 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team started Citrus Coast League play with a 3-1 loss to Fillmore. Outside hitter, Number-two Malia Shellabarger ended the night with seven kills for Carpinteria. Libero Number-14 Emily Montoya helped the Warriors with 16 digs. Sophomore and setter, Numberseven Marlene Sanchez contributed 19 assists. Carpinteria’s overall record is 2-4 and 0-1 in league play.

ANNIVERSARY?

September 17 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team hosted Garden Street Academy for a Monday evening volleyball match, and swept the match 3-0.

“Carpinteria played consistently and was able to stop Garden Street Academy’s go to hitter in the third set,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Number-eight opposite Sarah Weitzman stepped in as setter because Marlene Sanchez was sick. The Warriors will host the Malibu Sharks Tuesday, Sept. 24, for their second league match of the season. Carpinteria’s overall record improves to 3-4 and are 0-1 in Citrus Coast League play.

Deputies responded to a possible fight on the Amtrak platform. Four subjects were involved in a verbal altercation, and the parties were leaving as deputies arrived.

A woman and man were contacted and arrested for their warrants. The man was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail, and the woman was released to medics with a citation because of medical issues.

A traffic stop was conducted for forward-facing red lights activated on a vehicle. The driver was found to have an active warrant out of Ventura and was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

1:38 a.m. / Warrants and Narcotics / Bailard Avenue

A deputy contacted a vehicle parked on Bailard Avenue and determined that a man inside had a warrant out of Sutter County plus possession of narcotics. A woman in the vehicle also had a warrant from Sacramento County, and was in possession of narcotics as well. Upon arrival at the county jail, the woman admitted to having narcotics concealed in her pants.

She had already been admonished regarding bringing contraband into the jail, so an additional charge was added. The man and woman were both booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

A found bag was turned into the station and booked.

An ex-employee who had been laid off on Aug. 26, sent text messages that could be interpreted as a threat to the general manager.

An unknown suspect entered the victim’s unlocked vehicle and stole a pair of sunglasses and a semi-auto pistol.

8:49 p.m. / Possession / 1100 block Casitas Pass Road

While driving through a fast-food restaurant parking lot, a deputy saw a man standing next to the open door of a vehicle. The deputy recognized the man from prior incidents involving narcotics.

As the deputy approached the man, he closed the door and walked towards the back. The deputy illuminated the interior, and saw in plain view suspected heroin and paraphernalia. The man was cited and released.

A man riding a motorized scooter crashed into a vehicle in front of him and fell to the ground. He had a head injury and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Deputies responded to assist the CHP with a vehicle accident. Upon arrival, the driver of the vehicle, a 25-year-old Ventura resident, was deceased. CarpinteriaSummerland Fire Protection district used the Jaws of Life to extract the driver.

Lions Club funds Eyeshine event

Jasmyn Arroyo set to serve as 4-H County Ambassador

The Playa Del Sur 4-H Club of Carpinteria announced that member Jasmyn Arroyo was selected as a County Ambassador by UCANR 4-H staff for the Youth Development Program in Santa Barbara County. As a County Ambassador Arroyo will assist with events, develop a plan of action, perform service projects and give 4-H members throughout the county someone to look up to.

“Jasmyn will serve her county well as she exemplifies our club’s belief of ‘lead by example,’” explained Ron Vieira, Playa Del Sur’s Club Leader.

Arroyo has been a 4-H member for eight years, and was instrumental in starting the Playa Del Sur 4-H Club in Carpinteria. She has served as President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Reporter—multiple times in some of the positions. Within the club and at the county level, she has chaired, co-chaired, or participated on various committees. Rotary Club celebrates “service above self”

Recently, the Rotary Club Noon celebrated mentors who have made a significant impoact on their lives. “Rotarians spoke about fathers, partners and professionals who have challenged them to take a risk,” said Rotarian Dr. Roland Rotz, “(to) push past their fears and overcome obstacles in life…to be their best self especially when serving others.” Rotarians also honored one of Carpinteria’s most influential mentors and a charter member of the Rotary Club, Bill Carty. Additionally, Serena Kelsch gave a presentation about ShelterBox USA, a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides emergency shelter and tools for families around the world who have been displaced by disaster or conflict. Carpinteria Homeless Outreach representative Leah Wagner spoke to members of the Morning Rotary Club about the need to help provide resources to the local homeless population. Nevens named September Golden Bear

Morning Rotarian Langdon Nevens has been named the Golden Bear for September. Awardees are selected by their fellow Rotartians for “service above self.” Nevens was selected for the many tasks he accomplishes on behalf of the club, including quarterly member billings, providing tax information and paying and tracking all club bills.

Steve and Roberta Christiansen recently visited the Arctic Circle in Norway.

The sign in the picture warns to not venture further without a weapon, as the polar bears are a bit hungry in the summer months. Twenty-four hours of daylight brought the temperature up to the low 40s. “The locals were in T-shirts and shorts,” the Christiansens reported, “we were not.”
