City looks to create safe routes to schools

Debbie Talarico, engineer for the city of Carpinteria, led a presentation in the Carpinteria Middle School Auditorium on Wednesday, Aug. 28, updating community members on the city’s efforts to secure grant funding to augment the expense of installing traffic control measures at three locations around town to improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The three areas of focus—Holly and Sawyer avenues, the Carpinteria High School crossing and the crossing at Palm and Carpinteria avenues—have been ranked by the city based on the number of pedestrian and vehicle collisions in recent years, with Palm and Carpinteria avenues

having by far the highest number at 14 documented vehicle/pedestrian collisions (eight pedestrians and six bicyclists hit). The crossing is busiest at the start and finish of the CMS school day.

Grant money from Measure A, funded

by Santa Barbara County sales taxes, is administered by the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) and awarded to communities based on a competitive points system.

Middle school students cross Palm Avenue on Carpinteria Avenue, the site of a proposed new traffic signal. walking and bike routes to schools; and providing increased opportunities for carpool and vanpool programs.

The city has contracted with a traffic engineering expert to study the three sites and determine warranted traffic improvements. Potential upgrades to safety infrastructure include a traffic signal on Carpinteria Avenue at Palm to be synchronized with the signal at Casitas Pass Road, and “bulb-out” curb extensions at Holly and Sawyer, as well as on Foothill Road at Carpinteria High, where additional signage is also proposed.

“Bulb-out” curb extensions are proven to make drivers slow down.

At Carpinteria High School, Principal Gerardo Cornejo often stands at the crosswalk before school to watch over students as they cross Foothill Road.

Students “literally have to stand behind a telephone pole,” Cornejo said, explaining the dangerous crossing at his school and the fact that drivers cannot see pedestri-

ans waiting to cross.

“Another benefit,” added First District Supervisor Das Williams, “would be to reduce the speeding on Foothill.”

The projects are in early planning stages, and Talarico reports that the grant applications to be submitted via the county’s Measure A grant program are ready, well ahead of the “Cycle Five” grant cycle deadline.

Additional information will be published in the city of Carpinteria’s newsletter, and a survey will be available online for community members to give input on the proposed site improvements.

The Scoring Committee determining grant awardees will be comprised of one representative each from the cities of Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta and the county of Santa Barbara; the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition; COAST; the Parent Teachers’ Association; Santa Barbara MTD; Caltrans; Traffic Solutions; and the County Office of Education.

Maritime disaster befalls SB dive boat

The 75-foot charter boat Conception out of Santa Barbara Harbor burst into flame in the pre-dawn hours of Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, while at anchor on the north side of Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands National Park. C-Dog to hold dog park fundraiser

On Friday, Sept. 13, the local group C-Dog will hold a “Bark for a Park” fundraising event at Island Brewing Company from 4 to 8 p.m. The event will feature a silent auction and there is no entry fee. While the city continues its planning process towards designating a site and developing a dog park, the C-Dog group hopes to raise money to help fund a shade pergola, shade trees, bathrooms, picnic tables, signage, fencing and parking.

The Arias residence is “Lookin’ Good”

Carpinteria Beautiful has awarded the Robert and Elowina Arias residence the title of “Looking Good” for September.

The Arias family bought their home at 1289 Cramer Circle in December 2016.

In the years since, they have designed a home landscape that they call “a refreshing, liveliness, California feel.”

To conserve water, the Ariases added a range of succulent plants throughout the front yard and into their courtyard, along with a few fruit trees for homegrown treats. They built trellises around their home, extending the fencing and adding hedges and vines to absorb shade all around. To help reduce soil temperature, they sprinkled groundcover bark across the front yard, which blocks weed growth while adding a pop of color to the home.

Guns in the home: A safe or risky choice

Keeping a firearm at home is a choice but a risky one. Most gun-owning Americans think their firearms make them safer.

The reality is that access to a firearm increases the risk of suicide for all people in the household. There are 4.6 million American children living in households with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm. California law mandates that all homes where a minor may live or visit, guns, must be stored unloaded, locked and separate from the ammunition.

Means matter: of the commonly used methods of self-harm, firearms are the most lethal, with a fatality rate of 85 percent. Conversely, less than 5 percent of people who attempt suicide by other methods will die. Currently, firearms kill 40,000 Americans annually. Sixty percent of those deaths are suicides and 79 percent of them are white males over 65.

Shockingly, suicide is the second leading cause of death for children and young adults age 5 to 24. Sadly, these individuals are usually depressed, often impulsive, have poor judgement and access to a gun. There may be warning signs, but almost half of survivors report less than 10 minutes of deliberation. So, a loaded gun in the home could be the difference between life and death.

Note: where there are more guns, there are more suicides. Most gun owners report their firearm is for protection. Yet, only 2 percent of gun-related deaths in the home involve an intruder, 3 percent are accidental child shootings, 12 percent involve adult partners and 83 percent are suicides.

Firearm owners are not more suicidal, but their attempts are more likely to be fatal and made with minimal planning during a short-term crisis.

Lessons learned: lock firearms appropriately, improve communication with all family members and be available to listen with understanding.

Das’ record in public service

In the USA, those running for public office accept contributions. It takes money to get elected. When the system works as intended, the donations are a matter of public record, open for all to see.

Suggesting that money can buy influence without proof strikes me as unfair.

Should Das Williams be found to be stashing money in an offshore account to avoid tax liability, that would be newsworthy and cause for concern. Until then, why not just accept that he is doing his best as County Supervisor, and upholding the responsibilities the office demands?

Das has a long record of public service.

He is raising his family in Carpinteria and shares many of the same quality of life issues others voice. It is not easy trying to balance what is best about living in Santa Barbara with the developments necessary in a fast changing world.

People hold varying opinions about weed taking over the town. Good or bad, cannabis is a useful plant. Eastern cultures have long accepted cannabis as a gift from the goddess because of its healing qualities and effectiveness influencing erratic energies to a more peaceful state.

If Donald Trump is looking for a costeffective approach to control violent behavior and aggression in people with mental illness just give them an ounce of pot and send them home with a pizza.

You can help prevent suicide

Although suicide often can be an uncomfortable topic, we have made strides in reducing the stigma by continuing the conversation. We all have a role in keeping Carpinteria caring and mentally healthy.

Did you know that there are simple things we can do every day? These are things like smiling at others, listening deeply, letting people know that you care about them and that they matter. These are all preventative steps each one of us can take.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. This is a time for all of us to put extra emphasis on raising awareness and connecting people who are experiencing suicidal thinking to treatment services. It’s a time to ensure that we have access to the resources we need to discuss suicide prevention and for reaching out to those in our community who have been affected by suicide.

Are you aware of the warning signs of a person that may be experiencing suicidal thinking? These include increased use of alcohol or drugs; looking for a way to end their lives, such as searching online for methods; withdrawing from activities; isolating from family and friends; sleeping too much or too little; visiting or calling people to say goodbye; giving away prized possessions; aggression; fatigue; talking about killing themselves; feeling hopeless; having no reason to live; being a burden to others; feeling trapped or in unbearable pain; and moods such as depression, anxiety, loss of interest, irritability, humiliation/shame, agitation/ anger or relief/sudden improvement.

Suicide affects every demographic group, age and socio-economic class, however, some groups such as LGBTQ youth are especially at-risk.

How can you connect people to treatment services? If someone you know is in immediate crisis, call 911. To connect them with local services, call the Behavioral Wellness Access Line at (888) 868-1649. Resources are available in Carpinteria. With help comes hope.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

This is a time for all of us to put extra emphasis on raising awareness and connecting people who are experiencing suicidal thinking to treatment services.

How can you access resources needed to discuss suicide prevention? HopeNet of Carpinteria distributes wallet-sized cards, in Spanish and English, around town. We are available to speak to your group upon request: contact hopenetofcarp@gmail.com. HopeNet believes our community shares its vision of improving the mental wellness of our residents, lessening the number of attempted and completed suicides and creating a stronger safety net.

Do you know someone who has been affected by suicide? Invite them to these upcoming events. The “Out of the Darkness” Walk, sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 8 (check-in begins at 7:45 a.m., walk is at 9 a.m.) at Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara. The annual Candlelight Vigil, sponsored by HopeNet, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 10, (World Suicide Prevention Day) at 7 p.m. at the Seal Fountain here in Carpinteria.

This is a beautiful and healing event. Let’s keep actively caring—together we can prevent suicide.

Cassidy Thomas Karlsson 3/14/1986 – 8/21/2019

Cassidy Thomas Karlsson passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 21, in Carpinteria. He was born in West Los Angeles, California, on March 14, 1986. He grew up in Moorpark where he attended K-12 and graduated in 2004 from Moorpark High. Cassidy attended Moorpark College, Santa Barbara City College and San Diego State University before following his own unique path.

Cassidy was a gifted writer, tennis player and was filled with diverse interests and talents. He possessed a constantly curious mind. His dry sense of humor and engaging smile won hearts his entire life.

Cassidy left behind his grandmother, Dottie Hawkins of Indianapolis, Indiana, his mother, Robin Hawkins Karlsson of Carpinteria, California, his father, Rolf Anders Karlsson of Santa Barbara, California, and his sister, Heidi Karlsson Brock, along with her husband Michael Brock and their son Sven of Santa Barbara.

This gentle soul will be greatly missed by everyone who was fortunate to have had him in their lives.

Joseph “Joe” McDonald 1/23/1923 – 6/10/2019

Joseph “Joe” McDonald, 96, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2019, in Carpinteria, California. He is survived by his daughter, Robin Hunter, and son, Michael (Kathleen) McDonald, along with his three grandchildren, 10 greatgrandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Jim McDonald in Vietnam and Craig McDonald.

Joe was born on Jan. 23, 1923, to John Richard and Mary Alice Leontine McDonald in Monroe, Washington. He was the oldest of five children.

Joe joined the Marine Corps in 1943 and was stationed in Goleta, California.

After being discharged in 1946, he stayed in Santa Barbara where he had met his wife Doris Foxen and had two children.

He worked as an auto mechanic and owned two gas stations until a friend, Don Craig, talked him into working for him in the building trades, and that was the start of his path to Joseph H. McDonald, General Contractor.

He later moved to Carpinteria where he met and married Kay Shepard in 1962 and added two more boys, Mike and Craig, to our family. Joe was sponsored into the Lions Club by Jim Moore in 1967.

He made many good friends and found his place in the community he had grown to love so much. During his 50+ years of membership, Joe had been so proud of the many projects he had been involved with to help improve his community. His most notable contribution was being the Chairman and leader of The Lions Park, he was so proud of every aspect of this project. At the same time, he continued building his own business, building and remodeling many residential and commercial properties in Carpinteria, Montecito, Santa Barbara and Ventura.

In his spare time, he was riding his horses up in the mountains on many weekends, going on trout fishing trips with friends, and enjoying duck hunting with special friends, Fred Lemere and Ed Waters, and later adding their own sons to these trips.

Joe also had a very special friend, Jerry, who has also passed away.

Joe later met and married Elizabeth (Betty) Deaderick, adding her own family and their families to ours. Shortly after their marriage, Joe and Betty decided to retire and travel the United States and Canada in their motor home with a group of friends. Joe and Betty often met our families up at Foster Lake in Oregon for a weekend or a week of camping and boating and just enjoying each other.

They later decided to retire in Oregon and bought a home in Canyonville where they stayed for six years. Joe got pretty good at catching salmon and steelhead.

He fished out the rivers and came back to Carpinteria where he and Betty stayed the rest of their days.

We are inviting Joe’s friends to his Celebration of Life Barbeque on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Lions Park from noon to 3 p.m.

Please come and share good food, good friends and good memories.

Joanne Alice Wagner 6/19/1939 – 8/22/2019

Joanne Wagner, 80, passed away peacefully on Aug. 22, 2019, with her family by her side. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Richard Wagner, her three sons, Mark (Shelley Rose), Dan (Leah) and Tom (Jennifer), her six grandchildren, her two great grandchildren and a multitude of friends.

Joanne Alice Wagner was born to Rex and Betty Young on June 19, 1939.

Although California residents, Rex was serving in Korea and Betty birthed Joanne in her hometown of Watertown, South Dakota. Joanne had a younger brother, Curtis and they grew up in Van Nuys, California.

Joanne was in the first graduating class of Birmingham High School and then attended a year at Valley College, now Cal State University Northridge. She then transferred to Westmont College in Santa Barbara and within weeks met her husband, Richard Wagner. They courted and were wed in Van Nuys on Aug. 23, 1959.

They then moved to Cupertino, California, where Richard became a teacher and completed his master’s degree in Education Administration.

Their first of three sons, Mark, was born in 1961, and Joanne gave herself 100 percent to raising her family. Her second son, Daniel, was born in 1964, and finally, their last, Tom, was born in 1969.

While Tom was still an infant, Joanne and Richard were called to serve the Lord with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Papua New Guinea, so they boarded a ship and two weeks later arrived in New Guinea.

Richard was the principal of the local high school there and Joanne taught classes, entertained and raised her sons for the next 18 years.

Joanne continued her education and received her master’s degree in CrossCultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1985.

After all of their boys had completed high school, Joanne and Richard returned to the United States where they continued to work with Wycliffe Bible Translators preparing others for the journey they had experienced. During this time, Joanne battled cancer and ultimately underwent a bone marrow transplant that extended her life for 30 years. After being given a clean bill of health, they returned to the South Pacific for a short time to serve as directors with WBT in Vanuatu and thoroughly enjoyed their time there.

Once they returned to the United States, they retired from service with WBT and moved to Carpinteria, California, as she always wanted to live by the ocean.

Joanne spent much of her last few years caring for her beloved husband as he battles with Alzheimer’s.

Joanne would always greet you with a smile and a cup of tea. Joanne loved to travel, spend time at the beach, teach and mentor women. She enjoyed opening up her home to entertain and loved all who were placed in her path.

A memorial service to celebrate Joanne’s life will be held at Reality Church in Carpinteria on Sept. 14, 2019, at 3 p.m.

Other possibilities may be in the offing. Espresso? Wine on the deck along with music? Nikki is full of ideas for the future. But first, final approval. I’m hoping Summerlanders will get behind this unique new enterprise and voice support when the public arena meeting comes up.

Cannabis growers pledge $189K for school counselor The Carpinteria Valley nonprofit cannabis farmers group, CARP Growers, has made a donation to Carpinteria Unified School District that will fund a fulltime school counselor for the next three years at Carpinteria Middle School. The $189,000 donation over three years will provide the middle school with an onsite youth service specialist to help support the social-emotional needs of students, according to CMS principal Lisa O’Shea.

“The counselor will be able to meet with students to provide therapy, run group therapy sessions, supervise lunch refocus, and any other service that the administration deems necessary to support students,” said O’Shea.

The donation was accepted on Aug. 27 by the school board in a 4-1 vote, with Rogelio Delgado dissenting. CARP Growers will donate $63,000 annually for three years. The donation comes after a middle school counselor was identified by the school district as an unmet need and a top priority for funding for the 2019-20 school year.

CUSD will hire the counselor through the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (CADA), a local nonprofit that specializes in providing substance abuse prevention, intervention and treatment programs throughout Santa Barbara County. O’Shea expects the new counselor to be on the CMS campus as early as the week of Sept. 23.

Rigby also praised the impact of extended day schooling for kindergartners, pointing to significant increases in ongrade level performance in comparison

to 2017-18 numbers. The superintendent pointed to the district’s status as the first in the state to maintain support for all CUSD parents in understanding social-emotional skills development in local students. She noted that all faculty have undertaken active shooter training protocols, and that social-emotional curriculum are taught in every classroom, at all grade levels.

In the first meeting of the new school year, the Carpinteria Unified School District board approved a raft of memoranda of understandings (MOUs) covering field trip requests, partnerships with Girls Inc., the Santa Barbara County Education Office and the purchase of Chromebooks for third graders at Canalino Elementary School. The board also voted 4-1 to accept a $63,000 donation from the Cannabis Association for Responsible Producers (CARP Growers) to fund a Therapeutic Youth Service Support Specialist at Carpinteria Middle School.

Board chair Andy Sheaffer, noting the “great start to the school year so far,” oversaw the passage of multiple MOUs endorsing a field trip for fifth graders to the Catalina Island Maritime Institute, professional development programs for faculty and staff, and renewed funding for NurseCore, the health services provider for the district. Board members voted unanimously to accept contributions from the Rotary Club to transport fourththrough-sixth graders to the Santa Barbara Symphony Concerts for Young People.

The board began the meeting with a closed session to discuss the details of the sale of district property at 1103 Bailard Avenue to the Santa Barbara County Housing Authority. Sheaffer was pleased to announce a tentative agreement to sell the seven-acre property for $4.2 million.

The Housing Authority will use the land to construct “much-needed rental housing” for area residents. The project will include both affordable and market-rate housing.

The board accepted, 4-1, a three-year commitment from CARP Growers at $63,000 a year to fund a youth service support specialist at CMS. The position and services will be administered by the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse

(CADA). Trustee Rogelio Delgado was the sole dissenter. Board members unanimously supported a similar position, funded by the Santa Barbara County Family Service Agency, for students at Carpinteria High School.

Gloria Flores of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria thanked the board for their continued support. Flores manages the elementary programs for Girls Inc., including elementary school programs and a Healthy Sexuality program targeted to both boys and girls at Carpinteria Middle and High schools.

Members also celebrated the on-time, on-budget completion of this summer’s Measure U projects. According to the superintendent’s report, the improvements include new “flooring, ceilings, heating systems, fans, window shades, lighting, communication systems, technology,

A man called 911 because he believed he was being harassed. He was found to be on county probation and also had a no-bail felony warrant for his arrest for possession of a flare gun. The man was arrested, transported and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Wednesday, Aug. 28

11 p.m. / Warrant Arrest and Possession / 5800 block Carpinteria Avenue

A man was seen driving eastbound on Carpinteria Avenue and was known to have a warrant for his arrest. He was stopped and taken into custody without incident. A search of his vehicle revealed a meth pipe with a usable amount of meth in the bowl. The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

3:07 a.m. / Warrant Arrest / Hwy 101 at Santa Claus Lane Off-ramp

A man was travelling northbound on Hwy 101 and was subject to a vehicle stop for vehicle code violations. A record check showed he had an active warrant, and the man was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Thursday, Aug. 29

11:09 a.m. / Theft of Surveillance Cameras / Shepard Mesa Road

A caller reported that the gate to her residence was vandalized, possibly by her neighbor. She also reported that her surveillance cameras were stolen.

10:06 p.m. / Possession and Weapon / Linden Avenue at Malibu Drive

A man was contacted, and a concealed ice pick was located in the front pocket of his shorts during a pat search. During a search incident to arrest, a baggie of methamphetamine and a meth pipe with residue were also located on his person.

The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

11:36 p.m. / Bar Check / Carpinteria Avenue

A check of a pub resulted in an incident report for numerous violations.

12:18 a.m. / Theft of Bicycle / 700 block Linden Avenue

A caller reported that his BMX bicycle was chained to the “Do Not Park” sign just outside a bar at about 10:45 p.m. He came back to find his bicycle stolen at about 12:10 a.m.

Friday, Aug. 30

2:48 p.m. / Welfare Check / 3400 block Via Real

A caller reported to her employer that another employee was harassing her at work and had attempted to kidnap her after work the day before. The male employee was contacted and denied trying to harm the reporting party in anyway.

He said that the caller’s husband may have discovered that they were having an affair, and now she wants to end their relationship. He showed deputies photos and telephone calls he received from the reporting party that contradicts her story. The HR department was contacted and they agreed to move both parties to separate work locations.

5:39 p.m. / Possession / Carpinteria Avenue at Cramer Road

Deputies were dispatched to a neighbor problem on Carpinteria Avenue. A man was contacted leaving the area and found to be in possession of a used syringe and a used meth pipe with a usable amount of meth in the bowl. He was cited and

After the January 2018 flood and subsequent sediment dumping on the beach at Ash Avenue, the junior rangers found the two beaches were similar. Leanne said she would continue counting mole crabs and see if the difference reappears as the effect of the sediment dumping diminishes.

Then I spoke with Matt Roberts, parks and recreation director for the city of Carpinteria. He explained that the City Beach is groomed in the summer to move kelp wrack to the water’s edge, and to smooth out the sand above the high tide line. This is to improve the experience for the summer beach visitors by providing nice places to put down a towel for the day without needing to move a bunch of sand, and to avoid swarms of kelp flies buzzing around.

It is clear that the “cleanest” part of the beach is also the section that lacks the biodiversity of the State Beach—fewer kelp flies, beach hoppers and mole crabs, and KARLSSON so fewer shorebirds and other indicators of a healthy ecosystem. As skate park moves forward, one founder takes a look back

Ten years ago, Jason Lesh, Jason Campbell and Peter Bonning returned to an idea they’d had with other community members—thinking about what it would take to get a concrete skate park built in Carpinteria. Many other small communities across the nation have them, and the positive impact for youth is hard to overstate. The group formed a 501c3 nonprofit, the Carpinteria Skate Foundation, and began working with the city of Carpinteria. They are now in the final approach to realizing their long-held vision. Peter Bonning took a few minutes to speak with CVN about the park.

CVN: A core group of Carpinteria skaters came up with the concept of a town skate park, right? When did the idea first come to you, and who were the initial crew?

BoNNiNg: This story really starts with the temporary park that was built in the late 90s. I was attending Carp High, helped build the park, and was friends with the kids whose parents advocated for the park. I then went on to skate the temporary park until it was torn down. The hope was that the temp park would lead to a permanent, in-ground facility. Fast forward to 2009 when Jason Lesh, Jason Campbell and myself were discussing the need for a multi-use, multigenerational recreational facility for Carp.

We had witnessed the positive effects of the temporary park on the underserved 10- to 20-year-old population in Carp, and

especially on the low-income kids.

Subsequently, we watched as those kids who had previously frequented the park and had been building self-esteem and positive character qualities, fell into bad habits and a lack of direction when the park closed. The three of us care deeply for this community and thought it time we reengage the conversation about how we can live in solidarity with each other through positive self-expression and exercise.

We never claimed to have all the answers, but we figured a skate park could be a good foundation for a meeting place in Carp that would bring different generations together in an effort to foster understanding, exercise, fun and a revenue stream for the community that is less subject to the tourist season. So, we started asking around and the response was overwhelming.

This is a pursuit that is accessible to that group of people who may not have the means to pay-to-play. Skateboarding is hard and fun at the same time. Children learn valuable lessons about resilience, commitment, self-worth and camaraderie through skating. And they do so at their own pace, and without an adult telling them exactly how they must do it. Skating gives people a safe place to try, fail, and keep trying until they get it, without the fear of judgement or consequences.

Where else can you have fun while failing miserably? And it is exercise, fresh air, sunshine and smiles, alongside your parents, and neighbors and visitors from another town. People from other towns will come to skate and when they do, they will spend money in Carp. I don’t think I need to explain that one. Really, I could go on and on…

CVN: Clearly, skating has played a big role in all of your lives—this park will be a legacy for you, a lasting contribution to the youth of the area. A few of you guys have become fathers since launching the campaign—but you’re going to be there skating it on opening day, right? Can you talk about the thoughts you guys have had about the impact of skating: its benefits for youth and how it is part of a surf/skate culture?

playing team sports, but I would always turn to skating and surfing in my free time as a balance. Skateboarding is a form of creative self-expression in which coaches, boundaries, rules and conformity need not apply (although they might

Early Warrior miscues help Pirates spoil Carpinteria’s home opener

Playing their first home game with a new offense designed by coach Mario Robinson, the Carpinteria High School Warriors gave up two fumbles and a first quarter interception which catapulted the visiting Pirates of Santa Ynez to a 28-0 lead in Friday night football on Aug. 30.

The Pirates never looked back, cruising to a 42-0 victory at Valley Memorial Stadium. It marked the fifth win in a row for Santa Ynez in the game that’s been played each year between the two schools since 1941. With the win, the Pirates improve to 1-1 on the season and tie the overall series record at 32-32-5. Carpinteria starts the season at 0-1.

“We got the first game jitters out of the way, and now they can play football and be ready to go,” said Robinson of his team’s play, looking ahead to the next game.

Santa Ynez wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Led by the swift running of Anthony Gills and savvy play of quarterback Bennett Redell, the Pirates drove inside the Warriors’ red zone on their first possession. Redell then hooked up with Lars Ladinig for a 10-yard scoring strike to take a 7-0 lead with 8:17 left in first quarter. Both teams exchanged punts, but when Gills’ punt caromed off a Warrior player, the Pirates were in business at the Carpinteria 38.

Redell once again connected with Ladinig, putting the ball at the Warrior five. Two plays later, Redell’s quarterback sneak from one yard out made it 14-0. When the ensuing kickoff was bobbled, the Pirates pounced on it, giving them another good opportunity to score with the ball on the Carpinteria seven. Redell found Ladinig again for another score to make it 21-0 with still 4:11 left in the opening stanza.

The Warriors turned the ball over a second time when quarterback Will Collins’ pass was intercepted by Gills, giving Santa Ynez good field position yet again at the Carpinteria 25. The Pirates cashed in on Logan Ast’s leaping catch over Carpinteria defenders, bringing down Redell’s third touchdown pass of the night to put the score at 28-0. The visitors added two more touchdowns before halftime—one on a 15-yard pass from Redell to Camron

Prendergast and another on defense, as Gills returned his second interception of the night, 55 yards for the other. An interception by the Warriors’ Richard De Alba at the end of the half, helped keep the score at 42-0 going into the intermission.

The home team shut out Santa Ynez the rest of the way. Diego Hernandez thwarted one drive with an interception in the end zone, and the Warriors started a drive of their own. Behind the solid running of Tristan Kelly and a prompt completion on fourth down from alternate quarterback Diego Mendez to Hernandez, they drove to the Pirates’ four. After reaching the one-yard line however, an errant snap on fourth down ended the drive.

Carpinteria had another chance to

score early in the fourth quarter after Irving Garcia recovered a Pirate fumble.

But Victor Rinaldi’s 37-yard field goal attempt fluttered wide to the left. Redell was named the game’s MVP, throwing four touchdowns and running in one.

Tyler Germani took home the “Pirate Pride” award who had six tackles for the game, including two sacks, and Diego Hernandez captured the “Warrior Spirit Never Dies” award.

Injuries to standouts Danny Grimes and Jacob Macias will make it challenging for the Warriors to rebound against Beverly Hills on Friday, Sept. 6. “They’re going to continue to battle, that’s their character, so it will all be good,” said Robinson. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Valley Memorial Stadium.

Girls volleyball

August 27 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team dropped their opening match to St. Bonaventure, three games to none. “Carpinteria had a ton of energy … and played to their potential all the way thought the first set,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. “In the second set, the Seraphs started to fire on all cylinders and never looked back.” Starting outside hitter Malia Shellabarger assisted the Warriors with eight digs and six kills. Libero Emily Montoya added 14 digs and a service ace for Carpinteria. Setter and sophomore Marlene Sanchez provided 19 on the assist ledger for the night.

August 29 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team fell to Orcutt Academy at Warriors Gym, 3-1. “Carpinteria rallied their energy and was able to defeat the Spartans in the fourth set,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Malia Shellabarger helped win the game with 10 kills and three aces. Senior and starting outside Sadie Mead yielded eight kills and 12 digs. “Middle blocker Eva Gropper did an excellent job defending the net, she added four kills, two blocks,” said Garcia. Libero Emily Montoya gained 21 digs and three aces for the Warriors.

September 3 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team swept Providence, 3-1. Outside hitter Sadie Mead put away 10 kills and served four aces. Malia Shellabarger, outside hitter, contributed eight kills and three aces. “Libero Emily Montoya handled business in the back row with 15 digs, two aces,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. The match scores ended at 25-8, 25-12 and 25-16. Carpinteria’s overall record improves to 2-1.

Cross country

August 31 – The Carpinteria High School cross country team competed in the UCSB Gaucho Invitational on Aug. 31. The Warriors brought home six medals on the day. Some of the top finishers for Carpinteria were Shayla Alvarez who took 35th place with a time of 21:11.78 and twin sister Savannah Alvarez who took 64th in 22:15.92 in the Girls 3-mile. In the Girls 1.5-mile race, Kate Cooney captured 17th place in 10:14.40 and Monse Alpizar took 18th in 10:14.50. Emily Ehlers earned 27th place with a time of 10:43.20.

In the Boys 3-mile, Victor Rinaldi grabbed 86th place with a time of 18:25.70, Luke Nakasone slotted in 88th at 18:28.40 and Esteban Zapata took 146th place in 20:51.80. In the Boys 1.5-mile race, Hugo Alvarado took 13th in 8:20.87, Eduardo Vences captured 28th place in 8:50.33 and Fernando Barahona took 23rd in 8:39.33.

The Warriors will take on Cate School in a dual meet on Sept. 12 at Viola Fields beginning at 3:30 p.m.

August 30 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team beat Cate, 16-8.

It was the first “Battle of the 192” this year, as the two local schools squared off in the pool. The Warriors jumped out to an early 8-1 lead en route to the victory. The team will participate in the Conejo Classic this weekend at Thousand Oaks High School.

They’ll then host Villanova Prep on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 3:15 p.m. at the Carpinteria Pool. The Warriors are now 1-0 on the year, and the Rams are 0-1.

8:51 p.m. / Theft / 1000 block Casitas Pass Road

After ordering food, the victim was getting sauce packets and set his wallet down on the counter. Once his food was ready, the victim left the restaurant without his wallet and cell phone. The victim arrived home and realized he did not have his wallet and cell phone with him. By the time the victim returned to the restaurant, his property was gone. A report was taken and the manager will attempt to get surveillance video.

12:30 a.m. / Narcotics Violations / Via Real

A man was contacted sitting in his parked vehicle. Upon contact, a methamphetamine pipe was seen in plain view on his lap. A probable cause search of his vehicle resulted in additional paraphernalia, methamphetamine and black tar heroin. He was arrested for multiple narcotic violations. While waiting for a person to retrieve the vehicle and dog inside, a woman approached and stated that she was the man’s friend and would take possession of the vehicle and dog. A record check showed she had a misdemeanor warrant. She also had a used hypodermic needle in her pocket, along with numerous pieces of mail from multiple addresses ranging from Santa Barbara County to Ventura County. She was arrested and they were both transported to Santa Barbara County Jail. A third party, who did not have warrants

or drug paraphernalia, responded and took the vehicle and dog.

Saturday, Aug. 31

7:01 p.m. / Drunk in Public / 4800 block 5th Street

Deputies responded to the Amtrak station on a report of a male subject yelling and acting intoxicated. A man was found to be intoxicated. He was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail without incident.

2138 / Outside Agency Assist / 9th Street

Deputies and Carpinteria/ Summerland Fire Engine #61 responded to a residence where food had been left in the oven that was burning and filling the house with smoke. Fire personnel removed the two occupants. One resident had to be carried out due to his level of intoxication. Once the residence was made safe, one of the occupants was transported by ambulance to Cottage Hospital. There was no loss due to fire, only smoke from burning food.

12:34 a.m. / Narcotics Arrest / Carpinteria Avenue

A man was contacted after an anonymous caller stated he was seen smoking methamphetamine in his vehicle. Upon contacting the man, a deputy observed objective symptomology consistent with being under the influence of a controlled substance. An exam was conducted in the field and the man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

the BOOK NOOK Carpinteria Library recommends

“A Fire Story” by Brian Fies

“A Fire Story” is a graphic memoir about the Northern California wildfires that resulted in 44 fatalities and 6,200 homes destroyed. In the middle of the night, cartoonist Brian Fies is woken up by his wife who smells smoke in the air.

They quickly pack up some belongings, load up their car and seek shelter at his wife’s office. They expect to make it back after a few hours, but find their home and neighborhood in ruins.

Fies describes his life-after-disaster with details like spending hours on the phone with insurance companies, replacing lost necessities and finding a new place to live. The memoir also includes his neighbors’ accounts, making the book even more impactful. Not a completely distressing account of survival, Fies incorporates humor into his storytelling. He effortlessly weaves photographs along with his illustrations, giving the reader a more nuanced understanding of his story.

Recommended for both teens and adults, “A Fire Story” is both a journalistic and entertaining read.

Coastal View News • Carpinteria, California without divulging their Native American background, but Orville Red Feather stumbles into tribal regalia, native music and pow-wows.

As in all pockets of American life, there are people in this novel who are determined to act destructively. Tony Loneman, Octavio and Carlos plot criminal behavior and the cast of characters intertwine and get mixed into more conflict and confusion. Like Faulkner writes about black and white heritage melting into each other, Orange writes about Native Americans engrossed in a brutal, oppressive America endlessly trying to figure out where they fit. What makes this story universal are the hooks that catch its characters, as they are hooks that catch many: alcohol, abuse, isolation, search for identity, search for family histories, the need for money. Orange’s characters struggle to find contentment but only find more problems.

Even if the Dead Heads have largely given up their school buses for mini vans, the psychedelic noodlings of their patron saint Jerry Garcia will be heard once again when the Grateful Dead tribute band No Simple Highway performs at the Alcazar Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 8 p.m.

No Simple Highway’s goal is to stand out among the other tribute bands “by bringing a fresh energy to the beloved repertoire, from jumpy cowboy ballads to deep-space jams and everything in between,” according to their website. The band formed in 2014 after the group of Santa Barbara natives had been playing Grateful Dead covers together at parties and gatherings for years. “Lolita” by Vladimir Nabokov

In honor of Banned Books Week, the Carpinteria Library Fiction Book Club will read “Lolita” by Vladimir Nabokov.

Nabokov’s most famous and controversial work, published in September 1955, tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert’s obsessive, devouring and doomed passion for the “nymphet” Dolores Haze.

Humbert suffers greatly in the pursuit of romance and carries her off on a desperate cross-country misadventure.

The Americana Cats will play at the Carpinteria Arts Center on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Tommy Orange’s 2018 debut novel opens with grim historical realities for Native Americans encountering white culture. After this brutally honest prologue comes a cast of contemporary disenfranchised characters, broken from generations of family separation and cultural confusion. The setting is Oakland, California, an urban city that connects the characters. Dene Oxydene is a videographer who records the fragments of personal stories he collects: what people know of their histories, their tribes and what being native means. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield and Jacquie Red Feather are sisters trying to move forward through memories, questioning the loss of their mother. The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center will present its next exhibition, “Farm to Table,” in the Charles LoBue Gallery on Thursday, Sept. 5. Running until Oct 14, the show is a juried art exhibition open to local and regional artists in two- and three-dimensional media, featuring artistic interpretations of the beautiful lands and remarkable products of the local region (including the avocado!). A reception for the exhibit will be held on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, The Americana Cats will perform in the arts center courtyard during the Arts and Craft Faire, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Cats play covers and original songs ranging from Bob Dylan and Gillian Welsh to Sam Cooke and Jimmy Cliff, with, as they call it, “a dash of Louisiana hot sauce.” The Americana Cats is an acoustic “herd” of 13 musicians, originally called “The Sundowners,” that has formed the core of an Americana music circle started by Ted Rhodes.

Joss Jaffe, a Carpinteria born and raised musician and music producer, will present a double-album release concert for the albums titled “Gaia” and “Meditation Music,” on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Santa Barbara Yoga Center, 32 E. Micheltorena St., Santa Barbara.

“A yogic sound healing journey,” featuring original compositions by master sarode (25 string Indian Lute) player and longtime Montecito music teacher Montino Bourbon, who has also led a large African drumming group in the Santa Barbara Solstice Parade for over 10 years, the event will also feature Sudama Mark Kennedy, another longtime Carpinteria resident and musician best known for founding Dreamtime Continuum, a popular Santa Barbara world music groove band.

Jaffe will play tablas, keyboards and percussion on the album. A press release describes an evening of “…music surrounded by love. Featuring traditional instruments of ancient India and new original compositions by Montino Bourbon and Joss Jaffe. The concert will feature segments of deep relaxation where the listener will be invited to take a meditative resting posture alternating with periods of movement activity.” The cost is a $20 suggested donation.
