Greenhouse farming is the best of both worlds.

Plant growth is powered by natural sunlight, and the entire grow operation is contained and controlled to conserve resources and enhance plant production. With irrigation, this means that water that runs through each plant is collected and recirculated. No drop is wasted or allowed to run off into creeks or the ocean.

When irrigation water runs through a potted cannabis plant, it drains into a gutter that feeds the used water to a holding tank, where the water is sterilized in a similar way to drinking water purification. Then, the sterilized water is mixed with nutrients and sent back to the plant to start the circuit again.

Efficiency is, of course, good for business, and water is one of the greatest expenses in farming any crop. Saving water saves money and protects an important resource. Sustainable farming goes beyond the bottom line. Fertilizers and pesticides running off from farms can be catastrophic to the environment, particularly in a rich and diverse ecosystem like the Carpinteria watershed, Salt Marsh and Santa Barbara Channel.

Crime Rate Keeps Going Down Supporting Local Businesses: “Keep the Lights On” The early days of the pandemic were dark and scary times. Small businesses faced an existential crisis and difficult decisions about how to survive. Deemed essential, cannabis farms continued to operate under the strictest protocols, and cannabis farmers looked outward into the community for ways to help those who saw their business disappear overnight.

From late-March to mid-June, CARP Growers member farms organized a program called Keep the Lights On. Combined, cannabis farms ordered over 1,200 lunches per week in the local economy. Restaurants were able to depend on the business, and farm crews got catered lunch.

Seeing the local economy buckle under the pressure of the pandemic has been a poignant reminder to all of us that local, small businesses are what makes up the community. Dollars spent locally recirculate in the local economy, keeping people employed and supporting local interests.

Cannabis has a history, both as an important medicine and as a criminalized plant. It was not surprising that some neighbors had expressed concerns that cannabis could attract Carpinteria farms crime to Carpinteria. crime rate The legalization of cannabis was a big change.

The Santa Barbara 2019 County Sheriff’s Office reported that in 2019 Carpinteria was the only jurisdiction in the county with a declining crime rate. The Carpinteria crime rate dropped by 27 percent between 2018 and 2019. Compared to 2016, the year that voters decriminalized cannabis, incidences of violent and property crimes in Carpinteria have dropped 37 percent, down from 267 crimes to 166.

South County Covid-19 cases surpass 200

On Oct. 13, Santa Barbara County reported 9,503 positive cases of Covid-19 and 116 deaths, indicating that three people had died from Covid-19 related illnesses in the past seven days. Of the 128 cases that are still classified as infectious countywide, four are located in the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. The South County region has experienced 204 cases total, including seven deaths. For more information, visit publichealthsbc.org.

Playgrounds reopen in Carpinteria

In accordance with state guidance, the city of Carpinteria’s Parks & Recreation Department has reopened playgrounds. Carpinteria’s playgrounds have been closed since March of last spring. Playground equipment was cleaned before reopening, and signage was installed to inform users of their responsibilities. These include wearing a mask, social distancing, respecting capacity limits, and not bringing food or beverages into the play area. All playgrounds, including Monte Vista Park, El Carro, Memorial and Tomol Interpretive Area are now open for play. When using parks, the city asks citizens to observe the posted responsibilities in order to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in the community.

Fire Prevention Week focuses on kitchen safety

This year’s Fire Prevention Week is themed “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.”

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District are focusing on cooking fire safety for all residents and visitors.

Cooking fires represent the leading cause of U.S. home fires, with nearly half involving cooking equipment, such as stoves and ovens. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of these fires, the majority being preventable.

I have known my fellow Carpinterian Wade Nomura, our current mayor for over 25 years.

Since joining the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning in 2008, I have had the privilege of working with Wade on many projects local and international.

Traveling with a team of Rotarians led by Wade, I watched him work with hundreds of people in many areas of Mexico. I saw he was revered as someone who has accomplished amazing results in the areas of clean water and sanitation in their communities. He saw a need then worked with our local Rotary Club, a Rotary Club in the specific community of Mexico and Rotary International to get funding to fulfill the need and complete the project. He has probably been personally responsible for several hundred clean water and sanitation projects in Mexico alone, his fluency in Spanish and his love of humanity work together to create many lasting friendships. Here in Carpinteria he does the same, helping many projects including building Tomol Playground.

For Wade, there is never too little time. He somehow manages to always do what he says he will do whether it is for the City of Carpinteria or Rotary. He studies what is before the council, considers all sides and looks to see what is best for the community before taking action. He is a calm voice on the Council, watching and listening to the entire process before making a decision. I always feel that he has our best interests at heart. Childcare providers eligible for city grant

The city of Carpinteria is now accepting applications for a third round of the Covid-19 Relief Small Business Restart Grant Program. Children’s Project continues expanded food distributions

Before Covid-19, a typical monthly food distribution at Carpinteria Children’s Project served 110 families. At the height of need during the pandemic, the Children’s Project was serving 500 families (over 2,000 individuals) per week. City Council approves Via Real traffic safety improvements

At its Oct. 13 meeting, the Carpinteria City Council unanimously voted to approve several traffic safety improvements near Casitas Pass Road and Via Real.

Carpinteria Public Works Director John L. Ilasin presented during the council’s meeting, explaining that the Traffic Safety Committee had received two public requests for on-street public parking restrictions.

“When the new Via Real extension was opened on Sept. 4, there were unintended but consequential types of traffic safety issues that were observed by staff, as well as the sheriff’s department, as well as the code compliance division,” Ilasin said.

The improvements include installing dozens of feet of red curb along Casitas Pass Road, Camelia Circle and Via Real, whereas at other sections of Via Real and Via Linda, the city will be removing red curb. Additionally, along the Carpinteria Creek parking lot, the city will be installing red curbs and parking time restriction signs.

The council unanimously voted to waive development impact fees of $5,610 for the construction of the new Carpinteria Sanitary District offices, located at 5300 6th St. The planning commission initially approved the demolishment of the district’s original 3,597 square foot office and the construction of a one-story 4,005 square foot building in the same location in June 2018.

Craig Murray, the Sanitary District’s general manager, said that the district is currently preparing to move to a temporary space, which will serve as an interim office space while the new building is being constructed.

“When this item came up in our board meeting discussions in 2015 or 2017, it was in the spirit of... there should be no additional impact to the city with this redevelopment,” he said. “We serve basically the same members of this community, and there may in fact be benefits to not charging fees to one another for things like this.”

Community member Jim Reginado submitted a letter against the waiver, asking that the council not waive the fees. “The city of Carpinteria revenue has been drastically reduced due to the effects of the worldwide pandemic. The revenue of the sanitary district has not,” Reginado said.

“Look at the condition of our city’s streets – the city needs all the money it can get. If the sanitary district wants to save money, it can redesign its large building to be more in scale with a small beach town.”

Covid-19 Update

According to Carpinteria Emergency Manager Mimi Audelo, the county must stay in the red tier for at least three weeks in order to move below to the orange tier. In order to enter the orange tier, the county must see less than four positive coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents and less than 5% positive tests. As of Monday, Oct. 13, the county is seeing 4.23 positive cases per 100,000 residents and 2.1% positive tests, she said.

Restaurants, brew pubs, bars and wineries are now allowed to open for indoor dining—at less than 25% capacity or 100 people, or whichever is less. Theaters and places of worship are also limited to 25% capacity or 100 people, or whichever is less. Fitness centers and gyms can open but are limited to 10% capacity indoors.

Receptions and parties are still prohibited under the current health order.

All playgrounds are also open, according to Audelo.

Get to know the inn

Last week’s CVN article gave us an unbiased look at the Surfliner Inn proposal (CVN, Vol. 27, No. 2). I am a businesswoman with a strong desire to keep Carpinteria small and charming. I believe that the 40-room hotel being proposed can keep both of those hats firmly perched upon my head.

A small hotel in the downtown area sounds like an excellent idea for locals and travelers alike. The developers are local Santa Barbara-area residents who have a stake in creating something befitting our small town. The architecture is beachy in nature and will harken back to the old train station that was located in proximity to where the new inn will be placed. The parking lot spaces that will be absorbed by the building will be replaced across the train tracks in an empty dirt lot that is currently underserved.

Having owned and run multiple businesses in our quaint town, I can tell you from first-hand experience how difficult it is to do that very thing. Most restaurants and retail establishments are stretched to pay the high cost of doing business in Carpinteria; rents are high, and business is often seasonal. This small hotel could offer travelers from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo a picturesque trip along the coast, arriving in Carpinteria without the need for a car. The downtown and beaches are all within walking and biking distance to the inn.

Let’s be open minded about this opportunity. The city coffers will be enhanced by an estimated half a million dollars annually with no city monies being spent.

All costs for the new parking lots will be borne by the developers. Our businesses have struggled over the years with fire, floods, Covid and freeway expansion.

I think it’s time to lend a helping hand.

No room for an inn

Many Carpinteria residents believe that the proposed Surfliner Inn is not a good fit for our quaint little coastal town.

During the tourist season—which is now six to seven months per year, the downtown area and beach neighborhoods are already beginning to suffer from vehicle congestion, parking crunches, noise and litter issues. Carpinteria has been discovered, big-time.

With the addition of a 40-room hotel consuming our much-needed city parking lot, it could be the tipping point that would forever change the face of Carpinteria’s small town, rustic charm that generations have cherished. The inn would significantly contribute additional light pollution, noise pollution, overcrowding and the loss of open space.

In last week’s CVN article, “Getting to know the Surfliner Inn proposal,” local developer Whitt Hollis was quoted as saying, “We’re trying to enhance this city.” Mr. Hollis, with all due respect,

Carpinteria is already a very special place that does not need your “enhancements.”

Dear city representatives, please do not make the same mistake others in leadership positions have made up and down California over the past 20 years.

They did not have the wisdom or the foresight to know when to stop saying yes to building and overdevelopment.

Once you build, there is no going back.

People love Carpinteria because it is the “last little great beach town.” Please, let’s keep it that way. “No” on the Surfliner Inn.

This land is our land

I’ve lived on the first block of Dorrance Way off Linden Avenue for 35 years, and I am opposed to placing a parking lot on the south side of the tracks on our coastal open space due to the proposed Surfliner Inn. I’m concerned about traffic safety and congestion in an already congested area. Placing parking on the south side of the railroad tracks totally affects this neighborhood. There is an apartment on the corner of Dorrance Way and Elm Avenue that would lose all of its parking by putting an access at the dead end of Elm. We don’t have sidewalks, and parking on the streets can become a nightmare when only one car can pass at a time. People walk in the middle of the street as it is now, and adding additional traffic brings additional safety concerns.

The plans have changes again, now calling for a Linden Avenue entrance to the parking lot. This would be spectacularly dangerous up against the tracks, and more so with the second tracks to be added. If you miss the entrance, you need to double back, and people visiting absolutely will. Tourists and careless drivers, combined with pedestrians, already clog up things. This will only add to the impact in a compressed area.

Placing public parking against homes isn’t right either. We also live in a flood zone. I could go on and on since I live right here and can sit on my porch and see first-hand how busy this street gets.

Proposed parking lot is too close for comfort

I am writing this on behalf of not only myself, but also on behalf of several families who live in the Downtown Beach Neighborhood and stand to be directly and grievously harmed by the Surfliner Inn proposal. Several of the tenants of the apartment building which abuts the proposed Surfliner Inn parking lot feel they have no voice in the matter. Many of them are primarily Spanish speaking, and therefore feel greatly disenfranchised from this complicated governmental process.

No city public parking lot shares a common boundary with anything other than a street or non-residential, commercially-zoned property. This holds true for all 18 borders of City Parking Lots #1, #2 and #3. Placing a parking lot on the coastal open space on the south side of the railroad tracks directly against an apartment building with primarily lower to middle income tenants violates this practice. No property owner or tenant should be subjected to a public parking lot being placed directly against their homes. I feel the City Council has an obligation to protect all of the residents of the community which they represent, especially those who have moderate income, and therefore very few other housing options.

I am certain that none of these “four local families” who are claiming to “try to enhance this city” (CVN, Vol. 27, No. 3) would stand by silently while a developer placed a public parking lot against their own family-owned property.

As I read the letters in CVN in recent weeks, I was struck by the barrage of letters against Carpinteria City Council candidate Mark McIntire. Was it coordinated? He was labeled and mocked, especially for thinking with an open mind.

I for one like diversity of thought and discussing different solutions to problems. Going forward, I support Mark McIntire and Wade Nomura. Specifically, I agree with Mark on the following issues: I don’t want a train station hotel; I want

strict and sensible cannabis controls; and I want Carpinteria to recover economically.

Finally, I support Mark because he will evaluate each issue, work with those with different views and put the best interests of Carpinteria first.

Natalia is passionate about Carpinteria, maintaining its small beach town atmosphere, incorporating creative and innovative approaches to provide more affordable housing for our residents, and creating new ways to expand business opportunities, all while listening to the concerns and needs of the residents and incorporating that into the city’s vision for the future. Cook and Delgado will represent the unrepresented

I want to voice my support for Craig Cook and Rogelio Delgado for the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees. I work with Craig at Santa Barbara City College; I know him personally and professionally. As a fellow faculty member, he represents the ideals that are critical in K-12, such as providing equal opportunity to those historically underrepresented, and giving a voice to the large Latino population in Carpinteria who deserve to have their voices heard.

His Ethnic Studies background is exactly what the board needs to explain how these inequities in education must be changed to support our students. Ethnic Studies needs to be taught in our schools.

I also support Rogelio Delgado. His passion for students is evident and has been a critical voice on the board during this past term. I think having Rogelio and Craig serve on our board will allow for more open conversation, not ones dominated by board members who don’t represent my voice or those of Carpinteria’s population who are overlooked.

The board needs to realize that their voice is critical and the decisions they are making are impacting present and future generations.

I’m writing this letter in support of Steve Bennett for State Assembly. I’ve known Steve since his time on the Ventura City Council when I was working as a school teacher in the area. Steve is one of the smartest, most caring, hard working individuals that I have ever encountered in public service. He’s an environmentalist and helped lead the fight to save agricultural land in Ventura County during his time on the Board of Supervisors. He would be a very positive addition to our State Assembly. No on Prop 15

I am shocked and disheartened when I hear support of Proposition 15. Haven’t the businesses of all sizes suffered enough this year? Haven’t we all suffered enough? Really, more taxes? Even before Covid, many businesses were leaving the state to find friendlier environments.

The excuse that this proposition exempts small businesses is an illusion.

Most lease their buildings. The cost will be passed along to the tenants sooner or later. Even if they do own the land there is a complicated rule combining the value of other properties, like their home.

And as far as big businesses are concerned, they provide the most jobs and best salaries and benefits. They will need to raise the cost of products and services, reduce staff or move out of California.

Personally, I like having Procore, QAD, Mission Linen and, Yardi Systems (just to name a few) here.

The bill writer’s judgment is flawed in so many ways, and shows a lack of understanding of basic economics and creating a situation that is too complex to reasonably administer. Even the California Assessors Association has taken an official position against Prop. 15.

I know this is the proponents first step to eliminate Proposition 13. Apparently, the proponents are only focusing on how they much fun they could have spending the money, not on the pain it will add to our community and the state.

It’s time to say goodbye to a madness only Donald J. Trump understands. The American populace has moved on from an individual whose incompetence, authoritarian machinations and abject cowardice have doomed him with the electorate. Sanitary District office relocated during construction

The Carpinteria Sanitary District is preparing to enter the construction phase of its Administration Building Replacement Project. The modular office that has served as the district office and board room since 1991 has been sold and will be removed from the 5300 6th St. site in the coming weeks. Construction of a new, permanent administrative office building in the same location is expected to commence shortly thereafter.

During the construction period, anticipated to be about 18 months, the district will relocate its offices to 1110 Eugenia Place. This new district office location will be open for business beginning Monday, Oct. 19. The main entry is located in the rear of the building, where there is ample parking and an accessible entrance.

The district continues to implement Covid-19 restrictions and is limiting access to critical business needs. However, the administration office is fully staffed and able to issue sewer construction permits and address other customer needs.

Fitch announced on Oct. 7 a rating of “AAA” for both the GO Bonds and refunding bonds and an “AA” on Issuer Default Rating, both very strong ratings. Ruben Burquez 1/3/1957 – 9/16/2020

Ruben Burquez, 63, passed away peacefully at home in Merced, California on Sept. 16, 2020 due to heart failure. Born Jan. 3, 1957 in Carpinteria to Trinidad and Pauline Burquez, Ruben was raised in Carpinteria where he attended Aliso School, Carpinteria Jr. High and Carpinteria High School, where he was an outstanding football player for the Warriors.

Ruben was the “epitome of a free spirit.” He was known to “just get up and leave” at a moment’s notice, leaving everyone wondering where he was off to, but being sure to drag his guitar with him. It would be weeks or sometimes months before he contacted a sibling and let someone know where he was. Ruben once ended up at the University of Washington where he received his teaching credentials. Ruben was employed by the Merced School District where he was a substitute teacher and a tutor. He was also a baseball coach for Yerba Buena High School for many years. He was a dedicated mentor, volunteering his time and knowledge to the youth of Merced.

In December 2007, Ruben married Evelina Figueroa of Merced. He was a loving husband and father to her three sons, Fernando, Jesse and Jacob.

Ruben was preceded in death by his mother and father, and sisters Mary and Beatrice. He is survived by brothers Trinidad Jr. of Oxnard, Tony (Gogi) and Wally (Candi) of Carpinteria, along with many nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends in Carpinteria. Ruben will be interned at Carpinteria Cemetery.

David Paul Kirchner 5/23/1955 – 8/18/2020

David “Dave” Paul Kirchner of Carpinteria, California passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020 after years of failing health. Dave passed away peacefully at his home in Carpinteria with his family by his side.

Dave was born on May 23, 1955 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Helen and Robert Kirchner. He is survived by his mother, Helen, sisters Diane and Dawn (Craig), his loving wife Carrie, his beloved daughter Katelyn and stepsons Travis and David. Dave was predeceased in death by his father, Robert Kirchner, and granddaughter, Stephanie Anne Marsh.

As a young man he was raised in Goleta, California. He was active in student government and water polo at Dos Pueblos High School, Class of 1973, and always spoke highly of all his dear school friends.

When asked what Dave’s occupation was, it was impossible to list just one thing. Dave was an entrepreneur and had unlimited talents to repair any broken item that he could get his hands on. He drove heavy equipment, repaired boats, cars, tractors, new and remodel construction, property management and computer support. He also excelled in drafting whether he was manually drawing or using CAD. He was an assistant teacher at SBCC in the CAD Department.

Dave was a man of faith. He was a strong, proud and good man. If someone needed his help, he would drop whatever he was doing to help them. In his memory, please do the same for your family and friends. He was loved and will be missed by many!

The Kirchner Family would like to thank the physicians that assisted Dave for so many years, Dr. Robert Byers, Dr. Andrew Binder, Dr. Darol Joseff and so many more. Many thanks to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and the Santa Barbara Artificial Kidney Center and their staff for the excellent care that you gave Dave!

Due to Covid-19 the Kirchner family has chosen to have a private gathering to celebrate Dave’s life. He has been laid to rest in the Carpinteria Cemetery by the fountain.

Independent study for elementary students

Forty-two elementary students in Carpinteria Unified School District have opted for independent study rather than return to in person instruction. Students opting out attend Canalino Elementary (23), Carpinteria Family School (7), Aliso Elementary (11) and Summerland (1). CUSD purchased Calvert Learning Program for $19,500 to provide the digital learning of grade level standards for students continuing to school from home during the pandemic.

Covid-19 testing

On Sept. 24, 123 CUSD employees were tested for Covid-19 by Merso Labs and the results indicated 0% positivity for Covid-19. On Oct. 8, 109 more CUSD employees were tested for Covid-19.

Carpinteria High School Athletics

Carpinteria High School Athletics began their conditioning program with Varsity Football on Oct. 6 and the following week introduced additional cohorts of athletes on campus for team conditioning after 3 p.m. Over the next few weeks, Boys and Girls Water Polo, Cross Country, Football, Boys and Girls Volleyball and Cheer will also begin in-person afterschool conditioning on campus. Per public health guidelines, only school personnel, coaches and students that are part of a small cohort may be on campus.

The high school campus remains closed to the general public weekdays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., and we ask for everyone’s cooperation.

AHA! Peacebuilders Program

AHA! has served more than 20,000 teens since 1999 and will continue their Peacebuilders Program via Zoom for Carpinteria Middle School students to support them in feeling connected and engaged while developing empathy, responsibility, initiative, agency, leadership, emotional management and teamwork skills in fun, collaborative and playful activities. CUSD has benefited from a successful Peacebuilders Program for the past three years.

Carpinteria “AAA” bond rating

On Sept. 26, the district made presentations to Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poors, the two agencies that determine

Modernization for the old CHS administration building which will house the new CHS Student Success Center is anticipated for completion in October.

Modernization for the gym began July 1 and is now 40% complete. The Measure U team has submitted the revised Summerland preliminary concept review to the County Board of Architectural Review (BAR) and received preliminary concept approval on Oct. 2 subject to some minor changes. There will be one more meeting with the BAR in a month to get final approval. The project will then be submitted to the Planning Commission which is the entity that approves the Coastal Development permit. In addition, the architects are designing the detailed plans in preparation for submission to the Division of State Architects.

Hybrid model for elementary schools

At each school site, students have been assigned cohorts of no more than 14 students.

During the day, there is no mixing of cohorts and students social distance at 6 feet and wear masks. Each site is implementing the safety and sanitization protocols outlined in the Aug. 11 Reopening Plan. PPE supplies have been distributed to each site and cleaning schedules are being followed. Every morning, the entire classroom will Zoom for morning meetings, grades 1-5. On Wednesday morning, both cohorts will participate in classroom Zoom lessons for enrichment, science and social studies. When cohorts are online, students will participate in art, music, counseling, GATE, EL instruction, tutoring, reading intervention and district software programs Lexia, Dreambox and Scootpad.

I would like to recognize CUSD elementary principals, Jamie Persoon and Michelle Fox, and their staff at Canalino, Carpinteria Family School, Aliso and Summerland for their tireless work in preparing for the reopening and in-person instruction at their schools. I would also like to recognize the CUSD District Office staff for their diligent work since July to provide all the necessary supplies and safety protocols for a safe reopening of our schools.

Ask the Candidates The Race for Carpinteria City Council

This year’s election cycle includes a hotly contested race for Carpinteria’s two open seats on City Council. Citizens of the World’s Safest Beach will have a chance to choose two councilmembers from a pool of three qualified candidates.

Incumbent Mayor Wade Nomura competes for his third term, with eight years Council service under his belt, and the desire to serve another four.

Candidate and Carpinteria-native Natalia Alarcon hopes her experience in community service and background as a bilingual Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist will

help her win a seat on the Council to “amplify the voices of our underrepresented community members.” And, retired professor and media presenter Mark McIntire has thrown his hat in the ring with the slogan, “Make Carpinteria better than ever.”

This week, in the last installment of CVN’s “Ask the Candidates” series, a four-part Q&A series aimed at helping readers make an informed decision on Election Day, we find out how each candidate stands on the Train Station Inn project. This week’s question: In the next two years, City Council will be reviewing a proposal for development of an inn on Linden Avenue at the Amtrak Station parking lot. The city stands to raise significant revenues through the lease and bed tax collected from an inn, but some concerns have been raised about loss of open space, parking congestion and the role of city government in commercial enterprise. What actions and opinions do you intend to take regarding developing an inn in that location?

Wade Nomura

The city has entered into an understanding with one developer who is pursuing an inn on the site adjacent to the railway station. The understanding does not guarantee that the project will be approved; it only provides that their plans will be reviewed by the design review bodies.

The developers are currently in the conceptual phase of design and have not submitted a formal design application.

Therefore, their design has not been subject to review and no decision has been made.

As a member of City Council, I cannot ethically make comments on this project until at a council agendized hearing. I can, however, make comment on the process of projects such as this without getting into specifics.

The review process includes Architectural Review Board, Planning Commission and City Council. All projects need to be evaluated on what is best for the community. At each review stage, public comments can be made and ways to mitigate items of high concern or that may be considered non-conforming should be provided.

The Planning Commission’s review includes secondary potential impacts such as to neighborhoods beyond the actual project site.

City Council then reviews the entire project including the perceived pros and cons.

It is my responsibility to ensure that a comprehensive review is given to all projects or we risk not evaluating them based on what is best for the community. I spent close to 18 years on the Architectural Review Board which has given me the experience to better understand our design guidelines and consider possible solutions for negative features of a project that could potentially bring it into conformance. I have also lived in Carpinteria since 1977 and appreciate our small-town charm.

I will consider all factors affecting our community. My decision will be based on what is best for Carpinteria.

Natalia Alarcon

Many residents have expressed concerns about the proposed inn at the railroad station. The lack of community parking, obstruction of views, noise and the overall fit are all reservations I have as well.

Our council recently passed an extension of 365 days, allowing the developer to present the proposed project at a conceptual review meeting.

It is my understanding that the conceptual review of this project will be in November. At this review, I will be participating during this presentation through public comment and I hope many of you will do the same. Community input will be vital.

Making a well thought out and educated decision is of utmost importance on this issue. My educational and work background as a licensed psychotherapist and a program manager at a community non-profit gives me the ability to evaluate all sides and arrive at practical solutions to difficult issues.

When I am elected to City Council, I will be accessible to all those who live and/or work in Carpinteria and I’m eager to hear your perspectives on this and any other issues.

As this is a topic that continues to advance in Carpinteria, I encourage residents to submit their opinions of the inn, both positive and negative, through the city’s website: carpinteria.ca.us.

Mark McIntire

This is a no-brainer. The present proposal for the development of a Montecito-style luxury hotel, euphemistically called an ‘inn,’ should be scrapped immediately. It’s a bad idea.

In the first place, the City Council never even surveyed every Carpinterian with a cell phone if they even wanted a train station luxury hotel, wiping out 65 prime beach parking spaces in the process.

In the second place, the council violated the competitive bidding democratic process by entering into an Exclusive Negotiation Agreement (ENA) with a single bidding developer with a spotty record.

In the third place, the present planned ‘inn’ is too large for that footprint in the present train station parking lot.

Council is charging ahead without solving the relocation of the 65 parking spaces sacrificed by this ‘inn.’ There is a city-owned ‘open-space’ between the train tracks and The Spot, but then, Carpinterians lose another prime open space. Madness!

Lastly, that parking lot was a life saver during our recent fire/flood Highway 101 closure for weeks at a time providing the only way in or out of Santa Barbara for Carpinterians.

My voting principle is: ask “we the people” first before Council makes commitments of public resources that will affect our community for decades. I certainly will when I’m elected this Nov. 3.

Ask the Candidates

The Race for Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees (Week 2 of 3) In this year’s election for Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees, incumbent Rogelio Delgado faces four challengers in a race for two seats on the school board. In our final installation of a three-part Q & A series with the candidates, we learn more about the top priorities of incumbent Delgado and challenger candidates Jaime Diamond, Aaron Smith, Jeff Weinbender and Craig Cook.

This week’s question: School board members have the opportunity to influence and decide funding allocations for school programs including physical education, special education, gifted programs, dual language programs, English language learning programs, afterschool enrichment programs, enhanced nutrition programs, garden programs, field trips, mental health & counseling programs, drug prevention programs, college readiness programs, and more. If you were the deciding vote in allocating additional funds to only three of these programs, which three would you choose and why? (You can name a program that is not listed in this question.)

Jaime Diamond This is a fairly loaded question as it gives no context. Have they all been fully funded and is there still a deficit? Have grant funding opportunities been exhausted? Was there some type of increased cost or need? What is the need for additional funding? How are the district’s reserves? Have teachers received bonuses yet? This seems over simplified. Also, are we looking through the lens of a “normal” school year, or is this a year in a pandemic? Context is important.

First off, I am not choosing Special Ed for a reason. It is legally required to be fully funded in categorical restricted funds. In fact, so is GATE, Nutrition and English Learning. If more funds are required, the district must transfer funds, it is not an option. Also, I would like people to know my choices do not reflect the notion that I don’t value the other programs mentioned in the question.

Under the assumption of a “normal” year, I would bolster our

reading intervention programs. If you cannot read, you cannot learn; this is paramount to student success. I would allocate extra money for school site funds—supplies and materials above and beyond what is provided. This gives principals the ability to purchase items as needed, which covers and may be used in many of the other programs.

Finally, I would give additional funds for required but under-supported programs such as PE, art and music. It is proven students, especially younger students, need more physical activity. This is for their health, of course, but also studies have shown a direct correlation between a schools offering more recess time and increased academic performance and focus in class; art and music go hand in hand unlocking parts of the adolescent brain and opening up other opportunities for students.

Craig Cook School boards have considerable influence over educational decisions and provide a key social and informative connection to the schooling process. For this question, the three programs would be: after school, English Language Learner (ELL) and Physical Education.

High-quality after-school programs—which offer multi-faceted academic, social-emotional and behavioral supports—help students retain and develop concepts they learn in the classroom through academic enrichment led by dedicated mentors. Moreover, they represent a lifeline for students who are otherwise left unsupervised after school ends. These programs offer healthy meals, organized physical activity and supportive staff to help students navigate the struggles they may face outside the classroom.

ELL learners are the fastest growing student population. It’s estimated that one-fourth of all students in public school by 2025 will be ELLs. While some students may speak English on a basic level, these students may need extra help in learning English academically.

Importantly, they can also participate in social activities and have

the ability to communicate with their peers and teachers.

Students receive many benefits from physical education classes.

Besides being fun and serving as a stress relief, they help students to become more aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. As expected, this knowledge assists students to make smart decisions concerning their safety, health and wellbeing. Furthermore, participation in PE has a positive influence on our student’s personality, character and self-esteem.

In closing, school boards provide leadership for our school system, adopting a unifying vision and mission, soliciting and balancing the participation and input of members of the community and advocating on behalf of the educational needs of all students. The board must do its homework and look at where there is the most need and usage by our students. Budget management responsibilities offer potential for more strategic management at the school level, but the effective use of funds requires well-functioning school board leadership and management structures.

Aaron Smith The Board of Education’s greatest responsibility is to make educated, informed and often difficult decisions related to the district’s budget. These decisions should never be made based on personal preferences or interests. Every penny spent at CUSD needs to be stretched as far as possible. Our student population and our limited funding requires us to identify needs and maximize benefits.

In every budgetary decision, I will consider how to do the most good with precious district dollars. How can we most effectively increase equity for our students? How can we meet the needs of families across the socioeconomic spectrum? How can we get creative in our use of funds?

I am prepared to do the research before board meetings. I will work with administrators and teachers to fully understand each of the programs needs and wants. Then I will work with our community to find funding from other sources to supplement programs. Grant

availability and support from Carpinteria Education Foundation and many other great local organizations and families have been critical to our district’s programming. We have such a wonderful, generous community and must continue to foster these resources.

Only after considering all the information and exploring all options would I be ready to make my vote. We need board members who are willing to do their homework, come prepared to meetings and be prepared to make decisions.

Entering a board meeting educated and prepared is not the same as entering a meeting with a decision already made. The voice of the public matters to me, and I will listen carefully during public comment and consider that input in my vote.

Jeff Weinbender How to spend additional funds for our students? I wish we had that issue more often! Without having to eliminate any existing programs, I would choose to allocate the monies towards the greatest needs.

The recent impact of school shutdowns and the coronavirus have had a major emotional impact on many of our students and families. I would first increase funding for counseling and mental health. These resources could also be directed to help combat some of the chronic absenteeism in our schools. Additionally, I believe a strong academic counseling connection can really help personalize education and increase student equity.

The second area I would support would be English-language learning and English skills. When the California Department of Education cites the majority of students in a school below state standards in ELA in Carpinteria, this becomes a gaping need that cannot

be ignored. Giving students the supports they need for language development will only lead to greater successes across academic disciplines and throughout life. As a junior high history teacher, I see students succeed and struggle based on their reading abilities.

I believe spending extra resources in English skills, specifically at the elementary level, will lead to greater results for students in middle school. We cannot create the critical-thinking students we seek as graduates without solid academic foundations built in our primary schools.

Finally, I would seek effective drug prevention resources. I have lived long enough to see the devastating effects drugs and alcohol can have on people from all walks of life. Carpinteria has seen increases in life limiting drug addiction. While we have avoided a full-scale epidemic like other towns have experienced, any life saved from addiction is worth our care.

A lot of parents do not speak English and they do not read the Coastal View News or Santa Barbara NewsPress; they read La Opinion or El Latino. Their children are monolingual, learning how to survive with their limited English ability. Funding for this program cannot stop the dream of a college education. Our kids need the funding for the English-speaking program. Funding should be allocated on the annual budget.

2) Mental health and counseling programs should always be considered a priority in our school district. Psychologists and counselors are hired through UCSB. Nowadays, a lot of problems affect students’ lives that interfere with their studies. Examples are violence at home, early exposure to drug use through friends at school or at home. All of these can lead to students failing in school, attempting suicide, and destroying families. Funding is essential for

mental health and counseling programs in our schools.

3) Nowadays, a college education is vital for students. They need to have proper academic orientation to graduate from high school with a good GPA. Students need to talk to their counselors if they are experiencing problems so that they can receive proper help. Parents also need to talk with teachers and counselors about any concerns and that is the way to move forward. A high school diploma is the first step to get into Santa Barbara City College or to a university.

College readiness programs are essential to parents and students, because they help families know about FAFSA deadlines, financial aid options, and other vital information to be college ready. Funding for college readiness programs in our school district should never be stopped.

Museum volunteer’s love for Carpinteria on display

What are you looking forward to after restrictions lift and the museum opens?

The docents are pretty close and I think we all miss each other and working together. Honestly, we also miss our visitors. We all believe that the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History is a vital component to our town. I’m looking forward to seeing the results of the museum’s director David Grigg’s work during the pandemic. I know it won’t be a “new” museum, but there should be some changes.

MISSION POSSIBLE LAUREN GRAF Loyal docent and history lover Mazie Chauvin gives her time to help tell the story of her “forever home,” Carpinteria.

Chauvin has been a regular helper at the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History since 2016 and was honored as their 2019 volunteer of the year. While Covid-19 has interrupted her regular responsibilities, she continues to help out, working from home, or safely in the museum office.

Living in a military family her entire childhood and married life, Chauvin was never able to put roots down in her community for longer than about two or three years. While moving around, she had limited volunteering opportunities, but one of her first projects was with “family services.” She, alongside military spouses and older children, provided information and temporary household items for families moving into their homes, until they once again packed up and moved to a new base.

In 1981, following her husband Bernie’s retirement from the Air Force, Chauvin moved for the last time, settling with Bernie in Carpinteria. The two purchased a local surf shop, the Sunshine Store and came to know and love their new hometown and its people, learning the stories that Carpinteria has to tell.

Working as a museum volunteer, Chauvin illuminates tales of local history for visitors. In the past, she also has helped at the Museum Marketplace and taken leadership in giving the aging, typewritten docent handbook a total revamp. Chauvin looks forward to welcoming visitors back to the museum to continue sharing Carpinteria’s storied past for years to come.

Why did you start volunteering?

My husband was ill for many years. I worked part-time for a while and stopped when he needed fulltime care. After his passing following 55 years of marriage, I was lost. I knew that if I didn’t get out and do something, I’d probably go crazy.

I wasn’t interested in going back to the workforce; I had earned a retirement.

When I thought about where to spend my time, the museum was my first choice.

What drew you to the museum?

Probably like a lot of museum volunteers, I’m a bit of a history buff. It was an opportunity to meet people and learn all about my hometown. Side note, working with people who have known each other all their lives has been a real eye-opener for me. My first shock happened my first day at the museum, when a docent asked me if I still lived in BeachWalk. “What?

How did you know that?” She said, “I remember when Bernie bought the condo.”

“What? You knew my husband?” Turns out lots of people knew Bernie. He owned the surf shop for 11 years. Kids from the ‘80s either worked at the shop or hung out there after school. Bernie was a great friend to all the kids.

Do you have any special memories from volunteering?

Since docents schedule themselves, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many different people. Volunteering at the museum is such a great opportunity to get to know fellow docents, and for me to learn about the founding families as well as childhood memories, many of which would never end up in a tourist brochure. Since I never experienced growing up in one place, I find my co-workers fascinating.

The Saturday marketplace is a time when almost all of the volunteers work.

Early on, I was asked if I wanted to wrap or cashier. Well, my gift-wrapping skills aren’t great, so I chose to cashier, later learning that “wrapping” involved wrapping the cooked hot dogs!

Once I called another docent to ask if he would switch shifts and he laughingly said, “Well, it’ll cost you,” and I asked how much and he said $100. I agreed and quickly scoured every drawer in the house and placed $100 worth of coupons in an envelope and left it for him. We do know how to have fun.

What do museum volunteering responsibilities look like on a regular day?

Docents are requested to work two afternoons a month. Since I live so close, I’m frequently called to fill in if someone can’t work and I almost always agree.

Most volunteers have extra duties, like the gift shop, documenting accessions, updating membership lists and filling out the monthly calendar. Our primary job is to greet visitors and give them a guided tour, document the visitors’ sign-in book, and to put out the flags and the welcome mat. If anyone wanted to know about an area, the local history museum is definitely the one place to find all the answers.

What inspires you to volunteer?

It’s a purpose and I believe we all need a purpose. A volunteer job is a chance to work in an area where you have a passion.

A paying job can be rewarding; however, it’s usually done for the money and not always in a field of interest. The volunteer is participating in an area that they truly care about. My belief is that everyone benefits from our local museum and we have the opportunity to share the history of Carpinteria with our many visitors.

Do you have advice for anyone looking to volunteer?

The Carpinteria Valley Historical Society is always open to new members. It is a very rewarding job with super coworkers.

One of the best things is that you make your own schedule. The museum offers opportunities such as field trips to other museums. You meet visitors from all over the state of California and frankly, all over the world.

Surf ‘n’ Suds continues supporting local breweries through virtual festivals Next event is Oct. 24

Surf ‘n’ Suds Beer Festivals would have been celebrating their eighth anniversary this year, but 2020 had different plans. After launching eight years ago, Carpinteria’s Surf ‘n’ Suds has sold out every year, bringing thousands of craft beer lovers from all over California to the small seaside city of Carpinteria. The largest craft beer festival on the Central Coast, a typical Surf ‘n’ Suds fest has over 70 craft breweries, ciders, wineries and kombucha companies at San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura and Carpinteria State Beach.

With 2020 putting a halt on events, Surf ‘n’ Suds decided to take their show online and introduced the Surf ‘n’ Suds monthly Home Fests, virtual beer festivals featuring 14 craft breweries and ciders from all over California. Since the first home festival in May, Surf ‘n’ Suds has featured 52 craft breweries and ciders, shipping out individual variety beer boxes all over California. This month, Surf ‘n’ Suds started shipping to Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

“We wanted to keep Surf ‘n’ Suds going and thought the best way to do that with all of the Covid-19 restrictions was to deliver an entire beer festival right to people’s front doors,” said Surf ‘n’ Suds event organizer Andres Nuño. “The beer boxes include one beer or cider from each brewery, a souvenir glass, and brewery and sponsor swag.”

The 3.5-hour show is hosted by Nuño, during which brewers walk guests through their tasting rooms and breweries. The Home Fests also include music, featuring two bands and a DJ at every event.

Tickets are $75 for general admission and include 14 carefully selected beers from each of the featured breweries, a souvenir glass, and brewery and sponsor swag. Limited VIP tickets cost $85 and include a special Surf ‘n’ Suds gaiter and T-shirt. The event also includes a Zoom after party where guests can ask brewers questions.

Tickets are on sale now for the Oct. 24 Surf ‘n’ Suds Home Fest. The event will feature 14 California craft breweries and ciders including, Cervecería Del Pueblo (Pasadena), Draughtsmen Aleworks (Goleta), Full Circle Brewing Co. (Fresno), Humdinger Brewing (Arroyo Grande), Los Angeles Ale Works (Hawthorne), Lagunitas Brewing Co (Petaluma), Modern Times Beer (San Diego), Ogopogo Brewing (San Gabriel), Resident Brewing (San Diego), Smog City Brewing (Torrance), Temblor Brewing Company (Bakersfield), Wolf Creek Brewery (Santa Clarita), 101 Cider House (Los Angeles) and SLO Cider (San Luis Obispo).

On Monday, Oct. 14, children returned to classes at Carpinteria elementary schools. This was the first return of students to Carpinteria Unified School District for in-person instruction since the district closed all campuses in March due to the pandemic. Instruction has now pivoted to a hybrid model in which students will receive instruction in small cohorts in-person on some days and with their classes at home through Zoom on others. “What a wonderful day we had here at Canalino/ Carpinteria Family School,” said Principal Jamie Persoon after the first day back to school. “Everything went so smoothly—students were wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and they were happy to be back.”

“The Peanut Butter Falcon”

DUNCAN’S REEL DEAL M AT T D U N C A N With most theaters still opting out of “in person” this fall, what counts as new in the movie biz is relative. Over the past months I have focused on movies that have started streaming relatively recently—that is, movies that you can watch in quarantine—as well as movies and T.V. shows that have received some recent buzz.

But, in the spirit of keeping it corona-fresh, here’s a new one: recently released on airlines. I masked it up in the friendly skies this past weekend and decided to watch a “new release.” If you’re like me, picking a movie on a plane is tough, because you’ve got a bunch of options, but without internet there’s no way to find out which ones are supposed to be good. I took a stab so you don’t have to.

Now showing on American Airlines: “The Peanut Butter Falcon” (those wary of flying needn’t worry—you can also stream this movie on Amazon Prime or Hulu).

The three main characters in this movie each have pain in their past and problems

in their present. Zak’s (Zack Gottsagen) family abandoned him because he has Down’s syndrome, and, as the movie begins, he is stuck in an old folks’ home watching old wrestling videos all day because he has nowhere to go and no one to take care of him.

Except, perhaps, for Eleanor (Dakota Johnson). She works at the old folks’ home and keeps an eye on Zak. And she has to keep an eye on him, because Zak keeps trying to escape. Eleanor has her own tragic past, as it turns out, but now her most pressing struggle is to keep Zak safe and sound.

Tyler’s (Shia LaBeouf) most pressing struggle has nothing to do with Eleanor or Zak, at least not at first. He’s feuding with crabbers—that is, people who catch crabs—along the Carolina coastline. He steals their crabs, they get pissed, he complains that they stole his crabbing license, they don’t care, he damages their gear, they beat him up, and so on.

Tyler’s brother used to look out for him, but now he’s dead, so Tyler is messed up and alone.

Then Zak mysteriously shows up on his boat. He (Zak) is wearing naught but tighty-whities. He finally escaped the retirement center and the first place he found to hide was Tyler’s boat. Tyler is on the run, so Zak is a major inconvenience.

Still, even Tyler has enough of a heart to not just leave Zak to his own devices.

Once Tyler realizes that Zak is also on the run, they start to form a sort of bond. Tyler isn’t exactly all warm and fuzzy—at least not at first—but Zak starts to grow on him. They embrace their roles as outcasts.

Tyler is trying to get to Florida, but he agrees to first help Zak fulfill his ultimate dream: to find Salt Water Redneck (Thomas Haden Church), an old-school wrestler who once upon a time ran a wrestling school. Zak’s knowledge of this school is based entirely on an old VHS that he watched over and over in the old folks’ home. So it’s sort of a shot in the dark. But Tyler isn’t exactly in a rush. So off they go.

Meanwhile, Eleanor is desperate to find Zak. She wants what is best for him.

However, as things play out, she is forced to reconsider what it is that’s best for Zak—and her.

One remarkable think about “The Peanut Butter Falcon” is that I did not hate Shia LaBeouf in it. In fact, if you really pressed me, I’d have to admit that I liked him. He does a great job playing a decent redneck with a rough exterior.

And then there’s Zack Gottsagen, who is amazing—if he doesn’t brighten your day, nothing will. Dakota Johnson’s performance a little less even. Still, overall this movie’s characters are clearly its heart and soul. And it has a lot of heart and soul. “The Peanut Butter Falcon” is not complex, or complicated, or heavy on plot, but it does what it does well.

It also deals with hard things without making the viewing experience a miserable slog. It feels light and uplifting, even when things get tense or tough. Which is a real virtue these days, at least in my book.

So if you’re flying out of town, or just want something to make you smile, “The Peanut Butter Falcon” is a good bet.

“The Peanut Butter Falcon” is rated PG-13 for thematic content, language throughout, some violence and smoking.

Memorial Park turns 50

The city of Carpinteria’s first park turned 50 last week. Carpinteria Valley Memorial Park was dedicated on Sept. 26, 1970, five years after the city incorporated. The park has undergone many improvements in its long history, including recent playground upgrades and construction of a new memorial area on the corner of Santa Ynez Avenue and Aragon Drive. A plaque honoring “all those from Carpinteria who have given their lives in the service of their country” that was installed 50 years ago still welcomes residents to the park today but has been relocated to the northeast corner.

Lorraine McIntire honored for action

Lorraine McIntire of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset was recently awarded the Rotary People of Action District 5240 Award by District Governor Deborah Linden. Fellow club member Hans Brand presented McIntire with the certificate of award.

Challenge and heartache and reckoning. Making decisions in the face of inadequate information. Some days it feels overwhelming and insurmountable.

The global scale of the pandemic and economic disaster is unlike anything we’ve seen in our lifetimes, but throughout time, communities have faced shared traumas like our recent fires and debris flow. There are patterns in how we react to being in a long-term state of crisis. One is the sixmonth wall, and my friends, we are seven months into the pandemic now.

I found the words of Dr. Aisah Ahmad about the six-month wall reassuring and comforting; I hope you do too. Dr. Ahman is an associate professor at the University of Toronto and does her research within communities in crisis in the Middle East and Africa. She wrote on Twitter, “The six-month mark in any sustained crisis is always difficult. We have all adjusted to this ‘new normal,’ but might now feel like we’re running out of steam.... How can we keep going? First, in my experience, this is a very normal time to struggle or slump. I *always* hit a wall six months into a tough assignment in a disaster zone. The desire to ‘get away’ or ‘make it stop’ is intense. I’ve done this many times, and at six months, it’s like clockwork.

“This time, our crisis is global and there is nowhere to run. That’s OK… there is life on the other side. Right now, it feels like we are looking ahead at a long, dark wintery tunnel. But it’s not going to be like that. Rather, this is our next major adaptation phase. We’ve already re-learned how to do groceries, host meetings, and even teach classes. And we have found new ways to be happy and have fun. But as the days get shorter and colder, we need to be ready to innovate again. This is my first pandemic, but not my first seven-month wall. So, what can I share to help you? First, the wall is real and normal. And frankly, it’s not productive to try to ram your head through it. It will break naturally in about four to six weeks if you ride it out. Of course, there are things we have to do. Work. Teach.

I’m creating a personal plan to bubble wrap my six-month wall and to help my family do the same. I pulled on ideas from Dr. Ahmad and others to create a short living list of ideas: • Plan safe activities that you can look forward to for the holidays or whenever.

• Give yourself reality breaks. Take “mental leave” even if you can’t easily leave the place you are physically. Try planning to check nothing off your to-do list for the next hour.

•Look for joy and spread it. EnJOY and tell someone. Celebrate the smallest joys.

Embrace the practice of lower expectations when you can. Meet obligations, be kind to people. Done.

Here’s to giving ourselves a break, being gentle with ourselves and those around us, and breathing through the dips that come. We’ve shown such resilience to get to this point, and we’ve got what it takes to keep going.

The C-Dog Howl-O-Ween costume competition is back, this year in a virtual format. To enter, email C-Dog photos of your dog friends in their costumes. Stuart, the Chi-Weenie Terrier rescue dog, is a shaggy seven-year-old who was adopted at six-months-old after his original owner was arrested and a short stint living on the streets with a homeless person. Dr. Smith and co. at the Carpinteria Animal Medical Clinic on Casitas Pass Road took in Stuart and found him his forever home with human being Donette Hicks. Now, back to the USC football connection, one that is as long as the history of the Carpinteria program itself. Inspirational speakers from USC have graced many Warrior banquets. Well sir, Carpinterians who know their football will be disappointed to read that the profile of arguably USC’s greatest assistant coach has a glaring omission. He is an inaugural class inductee of the USC Hall of Fame and the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. He played at Santa Barbara High, Ventura JC, transferred to USC (1952–1955), coached at USC from 1957–1982, and coached for the Los Angeles Rams afterwards. He is Marv Goux (pronounced GOO). Notice that 1956 is missing from his career profile? That is a serious omission!

Marv Goux coached the Carpinteria High (CHS) football team during the 1956 school year. He led the Warriors to the Tri-Valley League Championship, undefeated until they were upended in the CIF playoffs by a larger school from South Pasadena. Players from the 1956 team are quick to point out that South Pasadena made it all the way to the final round of the CIF playoffs only to lose to Mater Dei. Mater Dei! A powerhouse then, a powerhouse to this day, often at the top of the heap, #1 in the nation!

If Marv Goux is an unfamiliar name to you, you might be thinking, “What’s the big deal, he was at CHS for only one year” (Actually, it was only ½ of a year!)

Carpinteria football players who had the privilege of playing for Goux held him in awe. His behavior, his language (often foul!), and his intensive dark look was fearsome, yet irresistible. He was animated, enthusiastic, intense, motivated and dynamic. At 5’9”, he was as tough as they come. Walking into the brandnew fieldhouse at CHS Memorial Field in 1956, you might have found him in his skivvies, his back scarred from football injuries, wrestling with the players.

Bobby Westfall, his quarterback that year, believes the Goux-led team has to be in the conversation for best Carpinteria Warrior football team of all time. The team’s talent with this peerless coach would give

them the edge.

Goux’s laser-like focus towards excellence for the Carpinteria football program was reflected in other ways. Sal Campos, who had just joined the school district as a night custodian remembers Goux would drop whatever he was doing to greet and help him scrub sinks and toilets in the fieldhouse. And, Rich Medel remembers Goux asking his father, Lucio, to start a Boosters Club. Lucio Medel, indeed, became the first president of the Carpinteria Warriors Booster Club in 1956.

After leaving Carpinteria to coach at USC, Goux would return periodically to check in on the Warriors, and the Warriors would go to him to pick up pointers from his mastery as an interior line coach at USC. Panizzon remembers that he and big lineman Dave Goodfield visited Goux on the Trojan practice field not long after he left CHS. Star USC quarterback Craig Fertig, who became a legendary Trojan, looked at the big, brawny Goodfield and commented, “Hey Marv, I thought you said all your Carpinteria players were small and scrawny.” The Goux connection to Carpinteria football would continue.

Goodfield remembers Goux as a mentor for life, his old coach passing away in 2002.

Several players from Goux’s 1956 team still reside in Carpinteria. Next time you see Panizzon, Goodfield, Westfall, Waldo Ramirez, Ernie Solano, George Ramirez, or brothers Joe and Danny Velasquez in town, ask them to tell you a Marv Goux story. They will not disappoint. In Panizzon’s book, “Carpinteria Warriors Football Records,” he writes “Coach Marv Goux, Mr. Trojan, was the head mentor of the 1956 Warriors. His brief tenure is still felt by many of the loyal fans. ‘Goux Stories’ are a delight at any social gathering of his former players.”

GranVida residents bake for breast cancer awareness

93013 Fund targets teacher wish lists

Carpinteria Unified School District will move into a hybrid learning model on Oct. 13 that combines in-person and distance learning. Targeting new educational and safety needs, 93013 Fund donated 100 headsets with microphones to Girls Inc. of Carpinteria and Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club and $10,000 to elementary school parent groups for transitioning into in-school education.

Both United Boys and Girls Club and Girls Inc. have been open since the start of the school year for out-of-school care, which includes assistance with Zoom classrooms for dozens of students during the school day. Teachers commented that audio issues are common for kids

at the youth centers and headsets with microphones would help teachers pick up students’ voices more clearly.

As elementary schools are set to open next week, teachers are largely adjusting to bringing classrooms outside whenever possible. Teachers applied for grants with 93013 Fund for equipment like yoga mats, shade structures and portable trays for their students. To make the funding equitable across the school district, 93013 Fund has donated $10,000 to be divided among each school’s nonprofit parent group based on the number of students in each school. Parent groups are working with teachers to fulfill wish lists and assist in a smooth back-to-school transition.

Residents of GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care are holding a bake sale to raise money for the Breast Cancer Resource Center in Santa Barbara. Using a treasured recipe from a GranVida senior, memory care and assisted living residents joined the baking team to create boxes of half dozen sets of mini cupcakes.

“Some of the residents are breast cancer survivors,” said Janey Cohen of Carpinteria Woman’s Club which is helping to organize the fundraiser, “and they wanted to do something to raise money for this cause.”

“Our SPARK program that is practiced daily here at GranVida is all about giving our residents the freedom and initiative to come up with ideas, projects and activities of their choice always directed to a good cause,” said Felipe Garcia, GranVida lifestyle director. “Residents feel at home and still have the full sense of serving and helping those in need.”

A MONTHLY MUSE MELINDA WITTWER Are you worried? The world is in the middle of a deadly viral epidemic. Millions of U.S. citizens are protesting the lack of racial equality and are questioning how we can “become” one nation with opportunity, liberty, and justice dispensed through color-blind eyes. On top of that . . . here comes the 2020 election complete with a debate that began and ended with verbal rants, the president coming down with the virus he is supposedly helping protect us from, and multiple controversies that are slowly polarizing our country, driving our citizens apart rather than pulling us together. But don’t despair, Halloween is almost here.

Are you ready? Are all the eerie decorations in place? Do you have a costume, complete with mask, that will scare all who come near your abode? Have you bought your pumpkin? Do you have enough candy corn to accommodate yourself and your family? At least this year you probably won’t need multiple bags of sweets as most children won’t be allowed to knock on strangers’ doors.

Maybe you can throw out IOUs. As much as we seem to enjoy Hal-

loween, do we really know much about it? The idea of Halloween dates back thousands of years to the celebration of Samhain, a Celtic festival that celebrated the end of harvest and the beginning of a new year. This day was also said to be a time when people could communicate with “those spirits beyond the grave.”

Over the years, All Hallows Eve customs and traditions began to include bonfires, bats, ways to get a husband, gifts of food, and scary costumes. Mid 19th century Irish immigrants came to the United States and brought the customs of jack-o’lanterns carved out of turnips, potatoes, and beets and playing pranks on neighbors. By the end of the 1800s in the U.S., Halloween celebrations were more about parties with games, food, and costumes than witchcraft or troublemaking.

What Halloween tradition is your favorite part of the celebration? For me I have always found the best part to be the candy. My first trick or treat experiences revolved around my mom cutting a hole in an old white pillowcase and turning me into a ghost. With my blond hair, a ghost was much easier to identify with than a witch. Then my brother and I were escorted around to homes nearby. When we got back, my mom never even thought about checking to make sure there was no “contaminated or dangerous” candy in my treat bag. In fact, housewives often made home-baked cookies or grandpas popped corn to pass out rather than pay for expensive treats.

One Halloween my brother will never forget was when he was about 10.

adventure, he went around to several homes of neighbors who did not have children. He explained to them that he would be glad to take any “extra” trick or treat candy off their hands just so it wouldn’t go to waste. Believe it or not, he accumulated quite a stash until my mom found out. She marched him right back to all those homes and made him return what he hadn’t eaten. The part that made me mad was he hadn’t shared any candy with me.

Once I became a teenager in high school, I was too mature to go out trick or treating. The only big celebration I can remember involved an old pick-up truck and a nearby rancher who had a pile of brush and wood he wanted to burn. The night was cold but about 20 of us (this may be an exaggeration) piled into the bed of the truck and arrived just in time to help the rancher set fire to leaves, twigs, and branches piled high. We had a great time but didn’t attempt any chatting with dead people. I do remember there was a bit of pumpkin smashing on the way home though. And just FYI, it was legal back then to ride without a seatbelt and in the bed of a truck.

Here’s hoping you vote, you don’t get the virus, and your friends and family don’t get the virus either. And, of course, we want peace and equality and a country whose citizens work together to solve our major trials and tribulations.

But during this extraordinary time, let’s not forget to enjoy some light-hearted celebrations. I need smiles and laughter and adventures to look forward to. The option of hugging people is now limited, but we can send a card. We can text and call and email. We can carve a pumpkin and set it on our front porch. We get to enjoy Halloween and then Thanksgiving and Christmas or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or whatever else is your celebration of choice. And don’t forget New Years! All these festivities will probably not be celebrated in our usual ways, but this simply challenges us to be more imaginative and innovative. If times are going to get better, we need to keep celebrating!
