Starting this week, the Gym Next Door is offering fitness classes on the Carpinteria Woman’s Club lawn. Jessica Kolbe is also offering Qi-Gong at the Woman’s Club.

“It’s a great partnership,” said Cyndi Macias of sharing space with Kolbe and the Woman’s Club. “I had been looking for somewhere to continue to teach our senior fitness classes in a safe way, and the Woman’s Club responded with open arms.”

Since starting classes on Monday, Macias has received positive responses from Gym Next Door members as well as new fitness participants from the community. All of her classes have been at least half full, and by next week, Macias hopes to meet the 10-person cap in class attendance.

“Everybody is just so excited to have the opportunity to do a group exercise led by an instructor instead of managing it on their own at home, which is challenging,” said Macias. “Since the first class at the Woman’s Club, I’ve received so many comments that people are happy and that it feels safe to exercise since it is a very large open space.”

Gym Next Door classes are Monday and Wednesdays: 9 a.m. Zumba (all ages, all levels), 10 a.m. Senior Fitness (a balanced, stability and fitness class); and Tuesdays: 11:10 a.m. Chair Yoga (can be done in a wheelchair or a chair provided by the gym).

Kolbe’s Qi Gong classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.

Jr. Lifeguard Program resumes

The city of Carpinteria’s Junior Lifeguard Program was back up and running as of Monday, Aug. 3. The program was suspended the week before due to an instructor’s exposure to a person who tested positive for Covid-19. Since then, the Covid-19 test results of staff members have come back negative and the quarantine period has expired. Session 3 began as scheduled on Monday, Aug. 3, and participants were required to continue to follow the health and safety protocols implemented throughout the program. Session 3 is full, and prorated refunds for Session 2 are in process. Anyone with questions regarding refunds should contact Parks & Recreation Director Matt Roberts at (805) 755-4449 or MattR@ci.carpinteria.ca.us.

Capozza joins Children’s Project Board

Dedicated to Carpinteria Valley children and their families, the Carpinteria Children’s Project Board of Directors is an eight-member group with diverse expertise in health policy and children’s health and awareness of the Carpinteria community. The Board’s newest member is Korey Capozza who has worked on initiatives designed to mitigate Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), improve health insurance coverage for children, and improve the performance of the health care system, particularly for patients.

“Korey is a welcome addition to the Board of Directors,” said Michael Cooney, chair of the Board. “The needs are great among the children and families served by the Carpinteria Children’s Project, and as we strive to meet those needs, Korey Capozza has joined we are delighted to have Korey’s expertise and the eight-member Board of perspective.”

When not working to advance the mission of the Carpinteria Children’s Project, Capozza spends her time managing an international non-profit organization, serves on several local and national boards and committees, and is an advisor to the Food and Drug Administration’s Dermatologic and Ophthalmic Drugs Advisory Committee. She holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from UC Berkeley and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania. Capozza lives in Carpinteria with her husband, son and dog and enjoys mountaineering in her spare time.

Covid numbers climb past 6,500, problems with reporting ongoing

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has announced that the state’s electronic disease reporting system has been experiencing issues processing incoming reports leading to under-reporting of confirmed cases of Covid-19. Recent data published on the SB County Public Health Covid-19 dashboards “are likely to be an underestimate of true cases in the county,” stated a Public Health disclaimer on Aug. 4.

Public Health now reports two deaths related to Covid-19 in the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. There have been 152 cases in the region confirmed.

Countywide the number of infections continues to climb. On Aug. 4, Public Health reported 6,526 confirmed cases, including 335 health workers and 64 deaths. Thus far, the city of Santa Maria has been the most impacted, with nearly 3,000 cases and 35 deaths.

For the record...

In last week’s article, “Backstage at the Alcazar: Covid threatens theater’s survival” (CVN, Vol. 26, No. 45) a file photo was published of Alcazar Theatre Board members inside the theater.

Several readers pointed out that the individuals were not wearing masks.

The photo was taken on March 6, before the stay-at-home orders, and before the California state mask requirement was implemented.

Free lunches for kids continue

Picnic in the Park, a FoodBank of Santa Barbara program, will continue to provide free lunches to kids in two Carpinteria locations through Aug. 14. Anyone age 18 or under can pick up a free lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on weekdays at either Carpinteria Middle School, 5351 Carpinteria Ave., or Canalino School, 1480 Linden Ave. See attached flyer for additional details.

Community tennis courts reopen

The Carpinteria Community Tennis Courts have reopened for public use. Players must abide by the rules and pay a per hour fee for use. The courts are located on Palm Avenue next to the Community Pool and are open during the pool’s operational hours, which are weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and closed on Sundays. Players must bring and use their own hand sanitizer and must sanitize both the gate and lock when leaving the courts.

Schoolboard hears student demands for multi-cultural curriculum CAUSE voices reopening concerns

Joaquin Carreño III 5/7/1962 – 4/5/2020

Joaquin Carreño III was born on May 7, 1962. He was a graduate of Carpinteria High School. He is preceded in death by his mother Charlotte Carreño Sanchez, and is survived by his father Joaquin Carreño Jr.; siblings Cristina Carreño, Daniel Carreño and Angela Carreño White.

Joaquin was a sweet soul who loved the beach and body surfing. Early in his adult life he was employed as a diamond setter at Jostens ring manufacturing facility in Santa Barbara. Joaquin later became a certified gemologist. He embraced technology and might have one day been an engineer or programmer.

Sadly, Joaquin was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a young adult and lived the rest of his life with this affliction. As a result, he was homeless for long periods of time. Unfortunately, like many others struggling with this mental illness, fear of treatment is common. We as a family did as much as we could to spend time together.

On April 5, Palm Sunday, Joaquin peacefully passed away at Serenity House from pancreatic cancer.

While we are sad that our brother has passed on from his earthly life, we are comforted in knowing that he is at peace with our Savior.

We will have a celebration of his life at one of his favorite places. We will meet at the Bluffs above the Jelly Bowl Tarpits at the Carpinteria State Beach, Saturday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. Please wear masks and practice social distancing.

The Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, July 28, ran to four hours, with many current and former CUSD students sharing experiences of racism and alienation at school, and demanding the implementation of a multi-cultural literature course as a senior elective at Carpinteria High School. The literature course, many students said, would be a meaningful first step towards helping Latinx and other students of color feel represented in what many of them said remains a system that blindly reinforces white supremacy by its omission of the history and experiences of Black, indigenous and Latinx people.

Additionally, numerous CUSD teachers spoke in support of student demands.

An equally charged topic in the meeting was school reopening and the teachers’ union assertion that district leadership had failed to form an effective, transparent taskforce to create a safe reopening plan. Concerns over an opening waiver that small school districts may apply for were central to the teachers’ position—primarily, the concern that district leadership would pursue a reopening waiver despite the ongoing and rising rates of Covid-19 infections.

CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby opened the meeting with her bi-weekly report. Rigby stated that the athletic seasons, as determined by CIF, would be condensed from three to two seasons and that most all sports would resume with a reopening of in-person schooling.

She also noted additional monies for the district from a “Learning Loss Mitigation Fund.” The federal Cares Act will provide $281,592 to CUSD and State Assembly Bill 117 brings in another $36,059 designated for student learning support and core academic support for students who need it.

Reopening plans

Superintendent Rigby then acknowledged Governor Newsom’s July 17 order, in conjunction with Santa Barbara County Public Health, that determines when schools can reopen based on per-capita cases of Covid-19 and staying off the governor’s watchlist for 14 consecutive days.

Rigby noted that the “pandemic is a fluid situation.” If and when schools reopen, Rigby said, they will be susceptible to closing again if 5 percent of teachers, staff or students test positive for Covid-19, or if 25 percent of district schools are shut down because of virus outbreaks within 14 days. Six feet social distance, no common staff rooms, face coverings for all teachers and students in grades three and up and increased safety and cleaning protocols are central to school operations once classes resume in person, Rigby said, adding that state and county departments developed return-to-school guidelines.

When the meeting opened to public comment, CAUSE (the teachers’ union) President Jay Hotchner expressed a desire for a more collaborative effort on reopening plans, and laid out the ways in which he and his members believed district leadership were not acting in a collaborative or transparent manner regarding the formulation of reopening plans—a position that was echoed throughout the comment period by other CUSD teachers.

Board member Andy Sheaffer, referring to Hotchner’s previous comments, said the union should not communicate in mischaracterizations and with vitriol.

When Hotchner spoke next, with minutes ceded to him by another speaker, he began by asking, “…would Mr. Sheaffer like to continue in his efforts to distract from

Christina Ballas, a fourth-grade teacher at Canalino Elementary said, “I am filled with fear, anxiety and dread,” about reopening plans. The “lack of a clear plan or protocol,” she said, “…does not lead me to believe that we are on a good path for returning to school.” Ballas implored the district to allow teacher feedback in formulating reopening plans, and asked that protocols be put in place before applying for an elementary school waiver to return to school. “Please don’t ask me to sacrifice my health, my life…” she said.

Eight other CUSD teachers, from the elementary to high school level, expressed similar concerns over the district’s handling of reopening plan developments.

“We all want to be in the classroom…” one of them said, “but at the same time we are not going to lose our families because you are putting us in a predicament that is not safe… I’m very anxious… I beg of you to think of our safety. When we are safe, the kids will be safe.”

Carpinteria High School teacher Lucy Carlton said she was “dismayed” at the district’s plan to reopen the first day possible, adding that it would be better to wait the whole semester to better implement online learning, particularly given the Latinx majority of the student body and the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on the Latino community.

Indeed, a CHS math teacher said there were multiple cases of Covid-19 within her family.

Equity discussions

When the meeting topic shifted to discussions of equity in CUSD, Andy Sheaffer stated that anonymous comments in emails and social media posts “have been very disturbing to me.” He said, “I want to let all of the students listening tonight know that the board takes these issues (of racism) extremely seriously.”

Rigby said, “Our goal is to provide equitable learning opportunities for all students…” and CHS Principal Cornejo thanked students for their activism.

“What do we need to do system-wide…” he asked, “to give equal access to all students?” as well as stating his support of forming a multicultural literature class for all senior class members. Cornejo thanked CHS teacher Ms. Nuñez for developing the multicultural literature class, and said the school would start with one section and planned to get UC system approval for credit for the class. “Multi-culturalism is not something you do for one day,” he added. The principals at the middle and two elementary schools in Carpinteria also presented the actions they were tak-

ing on their campuses to address systemic racism, including the use of the “Teaching Tolerance” curriculum.

Andy Sheaffer commented to clarify a statement he had made in a previous board meeting about his concerns over grade-level reading skills. He had not meant to be in opposition to a multi-cultural literature class. “I want to commend all the students who have made themselves heard here… and made a persuasive argument… what makes this country so great is that you can achieve anything you want to if you set your mind to it and you work really hard. We’re really proud of the positions you’ve taken.”

Approximately 15 CUSD students and alumni, with members from a newly formed student advocacy group “Diversify Your Narrative,” shared their experiences in the district and called for the board to vote in favor of the proposed multicultural literature class at its next meeting on Aug. 11. The students shared numerous incidents of blatant racist comments from other students and a general lack of administrative repercussions for those actions. Also at the forefront of their concerns was the lack of adequate representation of Black, indigenous or Latinx experience in literature and history throughout their CUSD education, and only cursory information about the impacts of slavery and civil rights in social studies curriculum. Students also said that some school board members were “virtue signaling,” which is a technique of establishing and maintaining white supremacy in public discourse, and they asserted their right to speak about issues that concerned them.

The students’ comments were forcefully and respectfully delivered.

A small sampling of student comments includes: Ashley Hernandez, a 2014 CHS graduate and college student who said, “My (CUSD) experiences in school were not memorable or fun… but I would give anything to go back and take a class (like the multi-cultural literature class) with Ms. Nuñez”; Marisol Haso, currently at UCLA, said “My experience at Carpinteria High School was of my own culture being taught incorrectly…”; CHS student Lucia Alarcon stated, “I am horrified at the actions of some school board members who have been very disrespectful by their comments, eye-rolling, laughing, turning off their cameras… The tone policing should not be acceptable and we have a right to voice our opinions”; CHS 2017 graduate Ana Delgado said, “The moral apathy present in this country is devastating…”

The meeting adjourned after board members voted to approve additional computer equipment purchases for elementary level students and Measure U projects.

For this week’s CVN, Bradshaw tells her unique story of how Covid-19 intersected with a cancer diagnosis, and how the community of Carpinteria has helped her family cope.

BY CAREY BRADSHAW My quarantine started like many of yours did. In mid-March, my husband George and I began homeschooling our five-year-old while balancing fulltime work. Like many, we were overwhelmed, exhausted and uncertain about the future.

We wore masks when we went out (which was rarely).

In late-April, I had a sore throat. Of course, I panicked and started googling Covid-19 symptoms. George looked down my throat and noticed a strange lump on my upper back palate. I thought it was nothing, but I was wrong. Fast forward through two weeks of doctor appointments, a biopsy and waiting for pathology results until we got the call from the ENT. It was an extremely rare type of cancer (myoepithelial carcinoma) and it had invaded the hard palate and bone of my mouth. Surgery was imminent. My local ENT felt he was not the right person to perform the surgery and referred me to UCLA. Two important things to note: 1. I have never smoked a cigarette in my life, and I take excellent care of my teeth. 2. The sore throat went away immediately after I saw the ENT. I truly feel it was my body’s way of telling me to pay attention.

Thus, followed a flurry of tests and surgery was scheduled for early June at UCLA. I was told they needed to remove a large part of my upper palate and three of my molars. I would be in the hospital for a week, followed by six to eight months of rehabilitation, regular visits with the maxillofacial specialists to fit an obturator (a prosthetic that I will need to wear in my mouth for the rest of my life), possible radiation and five years of checkups and PET scans.

This was a scary and uncertain time, but we had to keep up the façade of normalcy for our daughter. George and I tend to be private people. In this instance, I took advice from our friend Rebecca. She suggested creating a social media page to update friends and family; and then, when it was all over, we would not need to talk about it again. You can follow on Instagram @careykickscancer.

Chamber blues

Am I the only one who is concerned about the recent merger of our 108-yearold Chamber of Commerce with the chambers in Santa Barbara and Goleta?

Although this has been packaged as good for our businesses, I beg to differ.

Before this happened, and before Covid-19, the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce lost its commercial office space on Eugenia due to finances and now we have no chamber. After all these year, it is gone.

South Coast Chamber of Commerce and “Liaison to Carpinteria.” On their board, we have two committee members from Carpinteria. All other staff, marketing events, management and committee members are from Santa Barbara and Goleta. That’s not much of a voice left for us at all.

On top of that, now the dues our businesses pay go to the tri-chamber’s general fund. All the while the historical Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce takes a back seat to the larger two chambers.

Pre-surgery, our biggest concern was who could we trust to care for our daughter while I was in the hospital. Up stepped Carpinteria’s amazing Russell family who offered to take our daughter in. They cared for our daughter like she was their own and I will never be able to thank them.

Unfortunately, the surgery did not go off seamlessly. I was left with a severely dislocated jaw that went untreated for 16 hours. I couldn’t speak and was having trouble breathing. Because of Covid-19, my husband was not allowed in the hospital with me. When George was finally able to see me the next day, he saw the distress I was in. I wrote down that I could not breathe or close my mouth and he went into advocate mode. Another surgery was scheduled, and George refused to leave my side. We stayed in the hospital for 10 days (which meant neither of us saw our daughter).

He fought for me and is the reason I am doing as well as I am.

When we learned most of our medical expenses would not be covered by insurance, we were worried we would lose everything we had worked so hard to build. I had heard of crowdfunding but was uncomfortable asking for help. Our friends, Kevin and Steve, offered to set up a GoFundMe page. It has been such an incredible blessing as the bills pile up.

My jaw was never reset properly and our angel of a chiropractor, Dr. Austin, has been coming to the house to realign it.

Our friend, Rich, set up a meal train and I have been receiving nutritious smoothies and soups as I can’t eat solids.

Our friends and neighbors have been walking our dog and offering help in so many ways. The CBB congregation has been wonderfully supportive. My college friend, Meredith, flew out to help and I’m not sure what we would have done without her.

This has been a challenging time. I’m in a lot of pain. I’m relearning how to speak and swallow. I can’t speak, drink or eat without my prosthetic. I can’t hear out of my right ear. I get tired very easily and the maintenance of cleaning and stretching my jaw is time consuming and painful.

It’s a sobering reality.

I know this too shall pass in no small part due to the help we have received from this amazing community.

CUSD superintendent updates families

In a July 30 letter to the Carpinteria Unified School District community, Superintendent Diana Rigby announced that schools will remain in Phase One/ remote Learning until Nov. 1.

Rigby expressed appreciation for community input and feedback on draft reopening plans, and wrote that Governor Newsom’s order requires schools to remain closed to in-person operations until Santa Barbara County is off the state monitoring list for 14 consecutive days.

The superintendent also reported that attendance during Phase One/Remote Learning is mandatory when offered by the district, just as a normal school year would be. School hours will be 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for elementary students, and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for middle and high school students.

“Grab-n-go” lunches will be available

at school sites for students who qualify for free and reduced price lunches.

Rigby encouraged parents to contact school principals for assistance acquiring Chromebook laptop computers and internet access.

“We were looking forward to safely returning to in-person school this August and we are so disappointed—we miss our students and families!” Rigby continued. “However, I am confident that our CUSD teachers will provide a quality online learning experience for each and every student.”

The superintendent added, “Site principals will post the daily instructional schedules on Parent Square and please contact them if you have any additional questions/concerns. Please stay safe, wear your mask, wash your hands, social distance, and stay healthy… We are all in this together!”

Finding confidence to play during a pandemic Q & A with city of Carpinteria Parks & Rec Director Matt Roberts

BY DEBRA HERRICK Carpinteria is known as a paradise for outdoor play, from swimming to tennis, jogging, hiking and cycling. The city’s Parks & Recreation Department oversees many of the open spaces for leisure and athletic activity, along with the community pool, aquatics and Junior Lifeguards program. During the pandemic, the department has had to make swift adaptations and difficult choices to keep Carpinterians safe and programs running, including suspending JGs temporarily after a counselor came in contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19. CVN spoke with Parks & Recreation Director Matt Roberts to learn more about how the department is responding to public health orders and the needs of the community.

CVN: Covid-19 has had a big impact on Parks & Recreation. How prepared do you think you were as a department for the pandemic?

Matt Roberts: The pandemic is a unique circumstance that we didn’t predict. All city staff participates in emergency disaster training to a standard in compliance with state and federal law. We conduct emergency exercises, and in the past few years, we have used our training to deal with severe drought, the Thomas Fire, the Montecito Debris Flow Disaster, and now the pandemic. Our training helped to focus our management skills to do what we thought was best for our residents in terms of protecting public health and community. Can you imagine we closed the City Beach on the Fourth of July? In this case, the city acted in concert with all other adjacent waterfront agencies to protect public health.

Tell us about the major changes you’ve had to make due to Covid-19 and how your team responded to these. What have been the biggest challenges for your department?

Most everything is now operating in a nonroutine way. One of our biggest challenges has been to work with our staff to adopt health department orders and keep our staff and the parks patrons safe. We are on the lookout for new information about Covid-19 and continuously adapting our tactics to improve. Our effort paid off as we felt we had tactics to open the community pool as soon as the Health Department said we could.

We began our modified Junior Lifeguard Program likewise. But because we aren’t in any form of routine, and our work effort may need to be shifted from planning a youth program to closing a beach, we are challenged to stay fully informed and to implement new instructions forthwith but carefully.

How would you describe the morale of Parks staff & lifeguards this summer?

The morale of the group is good. From the pool staff to the ocean lifeguards, everyone is doing a yeoman’s effort.

This emergency continues to teach us all enduring lessons, but one that is amazing to me is how much people insist on the benefits of parks and recreation programming. Every park and recreation agency in Santa Barbara County join in a biweekly conference call to share Covid-19 strategies, and we are all hearing strong demand for park operations to get back to normal. The demand to swim in the pool is a great example.

How were you feeling when JGs started this summer during a pandemic?

HERRICK

Matt Roberts oversees the Parks & Recreation Department for the city of Carpinteria.

Beginning a modified program in this pandemic required significant “retooling” to comply with state and county health orders. In addition, we needed to see how it would work in the field. I felt confident that we could start the program safely and the Junior Lifeguard staff has met the challenge. The program has added a new field of instruction. We have always taught ocean safety and now have added instruction in Covid-19 prevention to the participants.

And then when you closed and reopened again? Tell us about the thinking process behind those decisions.

We suspended the program when we had reason to believe an exposure had occurred. We knew an exposure was a possibility and took the safest option in suspending the program until we could verify no one was infected. The program restarted today (Aug. 3), and if we get unfortunate information about another possible exposure, we will suspend it again.

Some readers have commented that there shouldn’t be camps running this summer or that JGs and counselors have been seen at the beach close together and without masks. How do you respond to that?

We have conducted specific staff training on Covid-19 prevention measures and have provided masks to all of our staff.

We have also provided hand sanitizer and now teach our JGs how to use it much like how to use sunscreen. It is our new way of doing business.

Our instructors have been asked to wear their masks when social distancing is difficult. We do not require them to wear a mask

when running or swimming or warming down. They should be keeping their distance when not wearing a mask. We are asking all the participants to do the same.

Tell us about the aquatics program. How are the Covid-19 restrictions impacting the pool? Is it still difficult for swimmers to reserve a spot or has demand lessened in recent weeks?

Do you have any new programs coming up that have been designed specifically with the pandemic context in mind?

The day when the city (along with all public pools in the county) was ordered to close was the day we started to make plans to reopen. When the health order came out that we could reopen, we were ready and the first pool in Santa Barbara or Ventura counties to do so. This was good news for our avid swimmers, but we did not anticipate that many folks would drive a long way from out of town to swim.

It took about a month for other regional pools to reopen so that those distant swimmers would swim in their local pool and free up space in Carpinteria’s pool. Now that that has occurred getting a reservation to swim is easier. We are still required to allow only one swimmer per lane and the most popular times do fill up. We are also running our age group swim team and some aqua aerobic classes with the same restrictions. The good news is that we are getting a lot of people into the water.

We are busy adapting existing programs to comply with Covid-19 prevention protocols when possible. I hope we can continue to move toward serving more community members while we wade our way through this pandemic and look forward to a post Covid-19 time ahead. We can get there sooner if we all practice good public health protocols.

Maria Zamora sets her sights on a bright future CVN REPORT

Maria Zamora recently returned home to Carpinteria after graduating from the University of San Francisco, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies in three years. Her undergraduate education focused on politics and societies in Latin America.

Her honors thesis was titled “Conflict, Coffee, and Competitions of Beauty: The Colombian Coffee Region Identity.”

Zamora is passionate about community service and was recognized as Junior Carpinterian of the Year in 2016 for her volunteer work at various local nonprofits, leadership in school clubs, athleticism and overall academic excellence. In San Francisco, Zamora received the International Social Justice award for “best exemplifying solidarity with marginalized populations” and contributing to community development through her academic and volunteer work in the city’s Mission District. “I’m very honored to have been recognized for my volunteerism in both Carpinteria and San Francisco. It proves to me that small acts are capable of making big impacts,” Zamora said.

Zamora is working fulltime as an executive and marketing assistant at Montecito Law Group, which is owned by her mentor, attorney Stefanie Herrington.

Two years ago, Zamora spent her first summer home from college working for the estate planning law firm as an administrative assistant. “Maria brings creativity and energy to her work. I constantly throw new ideas at her and then watch projects come to fruition in exciting ways,” Herrington said.

The pair first met at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria when Zamora was a member of the nonprofit’s college-bound Eureka! program and Herrington served on the Board of Trustees. In 2015, they visited Washington, D.C. on a lobbying trip where Zamora traveled on an airplane, subway and taxi for the first time. They met with California’s senators, visited the White House, and learned to code at Microsoft. “It’s been really rewarding to watch Maria’s growth over the past five years,” Herrington said. “I am thrilled our paths keep crossing.”

Zamora plans to serve as a Peace Corps Foreign Language Volunteer in Colombia, teaching English to primary and secondary children on the Caribbean coast. Her departure date has been postponed to next year. “I’m so happy to be back in my small beach town and working at the Montecito Law Group! My time at home will be well spent!”

Maria Zamora, a recent graduate of University of San Francisco (B.A. International Studies), is a Carpinteria High School alum, as well as the 2016 Junior Carpinterian of the Year.

Lumber and garden supplies are hot items this season at carpinteria Valley Lumbar yard.

With people staying home en masse during the pandemic, home improvement projects have shot up, said Jason Minteer of Carpinteria Valley Lumber Yard.

“People are home and all of those projects they didn’t have time to do they’re doing them,” said Minteer, “They got tired of sitting at home staring at the back fence falling down, the paint chipping away, the empty yard and so on.”

These days the lumber yard sees an average of 480 to 500 people checking out on a given day. Pre-Covid, daily customer counts were between 300 and 350. One of the hottest items is lumber. “Anything to do with fencing or decking, redwood, planter boxes, all of that has been flying off the shelves,” said Minteer, noting that the supply for lumber is so great right now that lumber mills can’t keep up, bringing up the price of lumber. The yard has also seen leaps in paint purchases, said Minteer, who has doubled his paint orders since the stay-at-home orders began.

Not surprisingly, homeowners are also upgrading their outdoor spaces as the long days at home have many spending more time outside. The lumber yard’s garden department is up 35 percent this month with new plant orders coming in three or four times a week, as residents stock up on supplies for their vegetable, succulent

Some homeowners are adding shades and canopies to their decks and patios to make more useable space for dining, working and homeschooling. “July has been the busiest month since we opened two years ago,” said Valerie Pampel of Pampel Designs. “Restaurants and homes—everyone is trying to maximize their space.”

Pampel Designs specializes in interior and exterior shade solutions, including window coverings, awnings and umbrella structures. Since schools closed, Pampel, who has three sons, has been working from her Carpinteria home, with some trips to the company’s State Street showroom. Her husband and business partner Daniel makes most of the home visits and leads project installations.

“We’ve done quite a few retractable canopy projects,” said Pampel, “a lot of people are trying to get creative with their outdoor spaces to have areas that are functional for work, homeschool, online college classes and so on.”

Whether it’s a new coat of paint, a deck or a pergola and canopy shade, in the short term, these improvements will make quarantine more comfortable, and in the long term, they’ll add value to homes.

Garcia awaits return to Oxnard pitch

While professional soccer has returned in the United States and internationally, Carpinteria High School Class of 2018’s Luis Garcia recently received notice that his second season with the Oxnard College soccer team will begin with practice on January 18, 2021, with competition set to start in February. Garcia was part of a Condors squad that had a successful campaign in 2019, finishing with a stellar 17-4-3 record, while reaching the third round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs before falling to Cerritos.

Garcia started playing soccer at the age of five when his parents decided to sign him up for local AYSO soccer. “I actually was recruited when playing in AYSO All-Stars to play for Santa Barbara (Soccer Club) and I played there up until U19,” he said. “At the time, U19 was the last year to play for their club which was a great experience with great players and great coaches.”

The Warriors soccer standout was part of the squad that made a phenomenal run, winning both the CIF-Southern Section Division Six and the SoCal Regional Division Five State titles in ‘18. Garcia played a big part in capturing that final game when he assisted on what turned out to be the winning goal—as his pass connected with teammate Jose Jimenez who found the back of the net in the 71st minute. Before the game, Garcia asked then Assistant Coach Jerry Rodriguez to switch him from the center to the outside midfield spot. Rodriguez obliged, and as a result, the senior ended up with three assists in his final match as a Warrior in a 4-2 victory over Rubidoux for the school’s second title in as many weeks.

But competing at the next level, Luis

ended up at a new position far away from the goal on the back line as a defender for the Condors. “The transition from high school to college has been kind of challenging, but I’m very thankful for all my coaches and everyone who helped make me the player I am. Because of that I can play different positions,” said Garcia, who made the CIF First Team and once took home the squad’s MVP award at CHS. Although his main duty was to defend the goal, he also distributed one assist last season in the 14 games he played. It was on Nov. 15 in a 6-1 win over Mission. Three days earlier, the Condors clinched the Western State Conference North Championship in a 4-1 win over Hancock.

For Garcia, the decision to attend Oxnard College was an easy one. “I ended up playing for Oxnard because their style of play is unique, you learn to be a great player on the field and a great person off the field,” he said. In recent years, a good number of Warriors have enjoyed great success donning the Condor colors. “My brother, Benjie Garcia and my cousins Ricardo Arroyo, Francisco “Packy” Arroyo played there,” he said. In 2015, Ricardo, along with CHS alumni Lalo Garcia and Edwin Elizarraraz helped win Oxnard’s first state championship.

Meanwhile, Luis hopes to transfer to UCLA, where he plans to study sports medicine. “It’s more of a wait and see thing, that would be my top university if I had the chance to go study and play,” said Garcia. And, at this point, “wait and see” is the approach many folks will be taking, navigating through the pandemic.

The 2020 graduate will represent the California-South Region which includes players from the Central, Los Angeles, San Diego and Southern Sections. Fofanah will play at Portland University when the NCAA soccer schedule resumes. Fofanah was also placed on the Second Team of Top Drawer Soccer’s Winter All-American squad on July 21.

“He’s truly driven to excel and he has the physical attributes to play at the next level,” said Cate soccer coach Pete Mack.

The Rockwells of Carpinteria

In Carpinteria history, the Rockwells—a pioneer family arriving in the Valley in 1874—are remembered primarily for a tragic event befalling their patriarch, John Vernon Rockwell in 1914.

Strong rainfall that year precipitated the flooding of all Carpinteria’s major creeks causing heavy damage. Rockwell, the rural mail carrier, age 45, was swept away, drowning in the Casitas Pass area. Never was the mail carrier’s motto, “neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” so clearly illustrated. The tragedy of a life taken before its time was compounded by leaving his wife, Isabel, to raise a household of children on her own.

John Vernon Rockwell’s story in the Carpinteria Valley began at age five when he and his mother arrived from Wisconsin. In 1888, he married a local Californio, Isabel Garcia. Both were 19 years of age.

Mixed marriages in the form of an Americano and a Spanish-speaking Californio were common and often advantageous.

His father-in-law, Manuel Garcia, assisted the young couple over the years, helping them buy land in 1893 on the Coast Highway for a family home. But Rockwell’s mother, Mary, opposed the marriage.

Perhaps she had heard stories of her son’s father-in-law who was believed to be a relative of another man named Manuel Garcia—AKA Three-Fingered Jack—who had ridden with the notorious outlaw Joaquin Murrieta. Eerily, she promised to take her son with her upon her death.

John Vernon and Isabel’s family accounted for 16 children, in all. But, two had died in infancy, and two as children.

By 1913, two had married, leaving 10 children at home. John Vernon had turned to potato farming to supplement his mail carrier’s income on a property on Foothill Road near Ocean Oaks (the location of the present-day Paul and Mary Foley Ranch), not far from the present-day Santa Barbara Polo Field. He also built a new home on the property for his mother, wife and children. None of them were destined for a happy future there. Rockwell’s mother died towards the end of 1913, and in January of 1914, John Vernon was swept away. His mother’s promise had been fulfilled. To Carpinteria’s historians, the Rockwell story seems to end at that point with the flood of 1914. But what became of the wife and children? Quite a lot, as the rest of this column will show.

In 1874, John Vernon Rockwell arrived in the Carpinteria Valley with his mother at the age of five.

He died tragically due to torrential flooding while delivering the mail in 1914. well, his son John Jr. competed in the first ever Russell Cup Track and Field Meet in Carpinteria. Although details of his performance do not appear to have been reported, they were probably good, if not great. All the Rockwell children were excellent runners. Brother George, and either John Jr. or brother Clyde, dominated the Russell Cup Meet of 1920 winning seven events between them. They led the Carpinteria High School Warriors to victory, the Carpinteria Valley News reported. The dominant performance helped establish Carpinteria as the permanent home of the Russell Cup Track and Field Meet. And Clyde was to set records that lasted for years according to his son, Jim (Clyde Jr.). News of Rockwell family achievement, however, stopped abruptly, after 1920.

The children’s mother, Isabel, had remarried making a bad choice. The man had a violent nature and went to prison for murder. Scandalized, Isabel fled to Fillmore with the children. Marrying yet again, however, she returned to Carpinteria and enrolled her youngest son, Robert, born in 1913, into CHS in 1927.

As it turned out, Robert’s achievement was to rival anything ever produced by a CHS student, before or since.

At CHS, Robert was the school’s president as an underclassman. More notably, he won an award that guaranteed Harvard University admission. The Rockwell family drove an old Ford cross-country to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to witness

Island idyll

IN THE NATUREHOOD NANCY BARON Every summer, I make a pilgrimage to a different naturehood where I work as a volunteer warden and naturalist. It’s a seabird island called Mitlenatch Provincial Park. Mitlenatch, one of the world’s Important Bird Areas (IBAs), lies in the Strait of Georgia between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia, Canada.

There, our primary duties are to act as guardians of the island’s wildlife, which means explaining the island’s protections to visitors. The rest of our time is devoted to surveying breeding populations, keeping detailed records of natural history, and spending a dreamy week immersed in nature.

This year, it was an even more complicated journey than usual to reach Mitlenatch. Because of Covid-19, I did not know if British Columbia (BC) Parks would continue the volunteer warden program. At the last minute, it gave the cast of volunteers the green light.

So, I flew to my mother’s home in the Okanagan Valley and spent 14 days in isolation, as required by Canadian health authorities.

During this time, authorities phoned me three times to confirm I was following my quarantine plan and to make sure I wasn’t sick or without food. After two weeks, I drove to the coast, took a float plane to Vancouver Island, and finally a water taxi from the fishing town of Campbell River.

As the familiar sight of Mitlenatch came into view—a rocky island with the silhouette of a goose in flight—tears came to my eyes. Alison Watt, an artist and biologist and my friend since our early days working for BC parks, has been my fellow volunteer warden for 24 years. She smiled at me knowingly. For a week, the island is ours.

As we approached, we heard humpback blows and the palaver of thousands of gulls above the roar of the boat engine.

My eyes searched the waves and rocks for more rare seabirds—Marbled Murrelets, Rhinoceros Auklets and Wandering Tattlers—their names as beguiling as themselves. Cormorants studded the guano washed cliffs. Large male sea lions belched from the rocks.

“Mitlenatch” means “calm waters all around” in the Coast Salish language. In reality, Georgia Strait is so windy that few boats make it to Mitlenatch. Days can pass without a visitor.

Still, we have plenty of company. The island teems with life. Mitlenatch has rich tidal mixing and upwellings that feed little fish. They, in turn, feed bigger fish and seabirds and so on up to harbor seals, sea lions, orcas and humpbacks. Our boat captain showed us video of a white orca calf spotted recently near Mitlenatch with its family. These marine mammal-eating “transient” whales sneak around the island’s shores to hunt for harbor seals as opposed to the “resident” killer whales, which feed on king salmon.

Mitlenatch Island is a critical breeding colony for Glaucous-winged Gulls and also Pelagic and Double-crested Cormorants, Pigeon Guillemots—called the penguins of the North. We are especially concerned for the breeding success of Black Oystercatchers that try each year to dodge multiple predators, including Bald Eagles, river otters, Peregrine Falcons and a pair of ravens. I’ve gotten to know these intelligent ravens over the years. I call them Quirk and Quark.

As we anchored and began schlepping heavy loads from the dinghy to our driftwood cabin, a raven flew low over my head and tipped his wing, flipping upside down three times, calling his characteristic “Quirk” call—a welcome salute.

As the water taxi departed leaving us on the island—always a favorite moment—Alison turned to me and said, “We made it. It’s the Mitlenatch miracle.”

This year is similar and different.

There is Covid-19 signage on the island and protocols to follow. But we are here—counting the breeding birds, observing the blooming times of the many wildflowers that splash the island. The field of phenology focuses on how climate change is accelerating the bloom cycle, to the confusion of birds and insects.

Mitlenatch is also a major haul-out for harbor seals, just like Carpinteria. But 1,100 miles farther north, the pupping season is in July—unlike December to May here. One day we watched a female hauled out on the rocks give birth. The pup instantly slid into the water, at home.

When the tide is out the table is set, author Nancy Baron gazes out from Camp Bay on Mitlenatch Island at gulls and other birds feeding in the rich intertidal. seals and their young. They nurse for three to four weeks turning the seal pups into fat little seal sausages then, drained of their fat reserves, leave them to figure out life on their own.

We circumnavigate the island daily by kayak to conduct seabird counts. No matter how quiet we are, our kayak sends hundreds of seals stampeding into the water from where they lounge on the rocks.

We try to paddle farther offshore but it makes no difference. The profile of the kayak resembles a killer whale. Spooked, the seals dive into the water, and cram themselves into cracks and under hard to reach ledges where they can hold their breath up to 30 minutes.

I have seen what happens when the seals are taken off guard. Once a large male killer whale sent a seal sailing high through the air with the thwack of its tail.

Two smaller killer whales chased it. And that was the end of that.

When we enter the water without the kayak, it’s another story.

Each day ends with a swim, as the rising tide over the rocks warms the wa-

ter. Seals keep an eye on us. As we swim into deeper water, they rush toward us, gathering around to stare at us with their dark eyes, and bobbing up and down, their nostrils last to submerge.

Every year, we see things that astonish us. A family of river otters has suddenly developed a taste for gulls. They run into the gull colony to grab a gull for dinner like we might dash into Albertson’s. They take chicks that can’t fly, and even adults that stand their ground. Other gulls rise into the air in a white storm of screaming fury but to no avail. Is this because the fish are in short supply? It’s another island mystery.

On Mitlenatch we practice a principle of attention. A faith that if we look and look, we will be rewarded.

places (such as Yosemite Valley) where such bear “training” has been a problem for many years, at Lassen this is a significant shift.

The bears probably originally followed their keen sense of smell to find food which was foolishly left in a backpack.

That find was enough for the bears to associate backpacks with food. The closure is expected to last for at least a few months to “un-train” the bears and get them to return to foraging for their natural food sources. Given the chilly fall weather and chance of early snow in the mountains, this will likely mean no backpacking in Lassen for anyone until next spring.

Why did this happen? A small number of people flaunted the simple and common-sense rules about backpacking in bear country. In so doing, they not only put themselves at risk, but also put others at risk of serious injury or even death.

Additionally, the fallout of their actions is affecting untold numbers of us who have been planning, anticipating and training for our backpacking trips.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is over 500 miles from Carpinteria. But can you think of another situation we are experiencing right now that bears any resemblance to what I described in Lassen?

For our own safety, for the safety of those around us, and for the safety of the entire community, we are required to stay at least six feet away from people we do not live with, and we are required to wear masks in most indoor public places, and outdoors when we cannot stay six feet away from others.

And with that, a year of planning was out the window. The entire backcountry wilderness of Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California was closed to overnight camping. So much for our carefully-planned and long-awaited sixday backpacking trip.

There had been multiple reports from visitors of bears going into backpackers’ campsites and searching backpacks for food. This only happens if bears are sometimes successful and actually find food. But that would never occur if backpackers followed the park’s strict regulations about using “bear cannisters” to hold all food and scented items, putting those bear cannisters 100 feet away from camp overnight, and keeping no food in backpacks.

However, due to a small number of backpackers who choose to act like the rules don’t apply to them, the bears (which are quite clever) learned that backpacks might have food. Unlike some

Beth Cox wins regional recognition

Carpinteria Morning Rotary held a Zoom meeting with Assistant District Governor Deborah Linden on Tuesday, July 28, and got news of several awards it received during 2019-20, including Best Overall Club in the district (which consists of over 3,000 members in 71 clubs). Additionally, Rotarian Beth Cox was awarded the district “Person of Action” award for a member who made significant impact on the club and community.

“Kiss Number 8”

“Kiss Number 8” by Colleen AF Venable takes us through Mads’ kissing journey. She has kissed seven boys, but none of them feel quite right and don’t lead to any relationships. Mads’ eighth kiss is where things start to go downhill as she kisses one of her best friends, Laura. Her mom accepts her as she is, but her father gives her the cold shoulder.

Set in 2004, some details may seem strange to the modern teenager and nostalgic to the typical millennial. Mads uses AIM to chat with her friends and uses the landline when she needs to speak with her grandparents. While placing the story in 2004 seems like an odd choice, it serves as a reminder of our recent transphobia and homophobia.

Though today’s culture is far from perfect on these issues, it might be jarring to see these issues so realistically portrayed. When the teenagers speak of a trans character, she is mocked instead of celebrated. When Mads is outed, she is shunned instead of accepted. While there are light- hearted moments in this book, it can also be triggering for some. It’s a complex read with several plotlines, but the hopeful ending is worth it. Recommended for teens and adults.
