Few things match the pure delight of witnessing dolphins leap above the ocean’s surface.

Along Carpinteria’s shore, the fall months provide plenty of dolphin spotting for beach goers. This time a few seasons ago, photographer Glenn Dubock captured a surfer at Tar Pits who sat front row for the performance. “It kind of reflects what’s going on in the ocean this time of year,” Dubock said. “Our dolphin friends visit us and it marks the season.”

Southern California Edison has issued a warning for a possible Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in parts of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria beginning Friday, Oct. 18, at noon. Prompted by heavy wind forecasts, the PSPS warning could lead to a multiday power outage. Residents, particularly those in the northwestern portion of Carpinteria, should be prepared for an outage that could last through the weekend. If a planned outage does occur, Southern California Edison is required to inform residents 24 hours in advance. Residents can sign up to receive alerts through readysbc.org and sce.com.

Water District starts toy drive

Carpinteria Valley Water District will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for children ages 0-18 years old, to be donated to the Transition House. The Transition House is dedicated to helping families transition out of homelessness in the Santa Barbara community. Capable and motivated families with children are offered life tools and respectful, non-sectarian residential services are designed to alleviate poverty and restore self-sufficiency and dignity. C-Dog to hold canine costume contest

Traveling Pants kids store finds new home

For over a decade, Traveling Pants toy store and gently used clothes shop has been the go-to joint for local parents as well as families on vacation with young children. It’s the place to go for the perfect gift—even last minute on the way to the party—for those perfect little people we know and love.

In September, the store relocated from its well-transited spot on Linden Avenue near the Old Austin’s Hardware to a new, slightly tucked away location facing Yucca Lane, accessible from the public parking lot on Elm Avenue and 9th Street.

With the parking lot right there, shopping at Traveling Pants has only gotten easier.

Now locals need to spread the word to support this local business, says store owner Susan Solano.

The business lost its coveted beach corridor spot when their lease ended at the end of this summer. They scrambled a bit but were “lucky” to find the new location in the same building as other owner-operated businesses, Bon Fortune and United Studios of Self Defense.

Over the last several years, Carpinteria’s Downtown T has undergone a gradual street tree shift. In place of the formerly widespread Tipuana trees, Ginkgo bilobas are being planted in several locations downtown.

Messy and in need of regular pruning, the most troublesome aspect of Tipuanas is their fast-growing shallow root system. The aggressive roots buckle sidewalks, crack streets and curbs, and create hazards for pedestrians, cyclists and even motorists.

While the Tipuana has proven itself to be a costly and harmful street tree, the Gingko biloba has become a shining star among street trees. It is planted throughout temperate zones around the world. The ancient tree is well

loved for the blaze of golden foliage it produces every autumn. Municipalities choose the tree for its ability to thrive despite urban stressors such as air pollution, soil compaction and excess soil salts. The species is also resistant to insects and diseases that plague many other trees.

Though the Gingko is propagated worldwide, it is listed as endangered because the only wild populations are clustered in two tiny areas in China.

Known as a “living fossil,” the Ginkgo’s existence goes back 270 million years in the fossil record.

CUSD enrollment trends downward, Aliso shows promising test scores

The trustees of the Carpinteria Unified School District met Oct. 8 to evaluate Superintendent Diana Rigby’s progress in meeting educational and social-emotional goals for Carpinteria-area students.

Amidst a continuing trend of declining enrollment, trustee Rogelio Delgado expressed concern over flatlining test scores, going so far as to say, “I see no hope.” Delgado, who recommended pay increases for area teachers, was the only one of five board members to vote against the first reading of the Superintendent Evaluation form.

Rigby presented the board with a report on progress towards test score goals for elementary and upper school students. Test score data, taken from the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), showed underwhelming performance by area students. The superintendent, stressing the fact that scores were in line with those of comparable districts in Santa Barbara, underscored the importance of continuing to track student progress towards the district goal of 60 percent meeting or exceeding English and Language Arts (ELA) standards, and 50 percent meeting or exceeding Math standards.

While there were relative bright spots, such as Aliso Elementary’s third-, fourthand fifth-graders all exceeding the statewide average in Math and ELA, other students continued to lag behind. Only 29 percent of fifth-graders at Canalino Elementary met or exceeded statewide standards in Math. The same percentage of Carpinteria Middle School sixthgraders met or exceeded middle school math standards, along with 44 percent of Carpinteria High eleventh-graders.

Board President Andy Sheaffer stressed the importance of following cohort data, which generally show small but gradual improvement among middle schoolers.

Math proficiency shot up from 27 percent for sixth-graders in 2017 to 42 percent for the same students as eighth-graders in 2019.

Rigby emphasized the significance of disaggregating the data, breaking down student performance by such categories as recent English learners and low-income students, both groups which showed distinctly lower performances than other students. “We really have to look at the interventions we are providing for English learners,” Rigby said, acknowledging that just 3 percent of eleventh-grade English learners at Carpinteria High demonstrated proficiency in ELA, and only 9 percent in Math.

The numbers on social-emotional health were better, with more than 90 percent of students rating Carpinteria schools as “safe and respectful.” Rigby also cited the district’s low drop-out rate

By WiLLiAM ARMShAW of 2.5 percent and pointed to the higher than 95 percent average daily attendance rate and high parental involvement as evidence of the school system’s welcoming environment.

School system enrollment continued its years-long decline, with Aliso showing a particularly steep drop of 27 students, which was somewhat offset by small gains at Carpinteria High, Summerland Elementary and Canalino Elementary.

Over the past five years, enrollment has dropped 5 percent district-wide. The decline in enrollment continues to produce budgetary pressure on the district, which is already facing significant mandated increases in Special Education spending and health care and pension costs for employees.

The board also voted to approve several new programs geared towards improving students’ social and emotional health. The trustees approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Food Bank of Santa Barbara to provide community volunteers, healthy cooking tips and nutritious recipes for the middle school’s Teens Love Cooking after school program. The program will extend over six weeks and will be open to parents as well. The Mental Wellness Center of Santa Barbara was contracted to provide Youth Wellness Connection Clubs at Carpinteria Middle and High schools, building on already successful Mental Health clubs at both schools.

At the Oct. 14 Carpinteria City Council meeting, Mayor Wade Nomura commended the Coastal View News on the 25th anniversary of its first issue, praising founding publishers Michael VanStry and Gary Dobbins for their “dedicated service to the Carpinteria community” and commitment to “unbiased news coverage.”

VanStry and Dobbins were met with a round of applause from the audience as they accepted the commendation, thanking Mayor Nomura for acknowledging a local institution which has been the recipient of numerous national awards in its brief history. “Those words have great meaning to me, because it means we did our job for the last 25 years,” said Dobbins. Dobbins then presented the board with a copy of Coastal View’s very first issue.

City Manager Dave Durflinger, in his bimonthly council report, reminded the community that the city’s website now has a dedicated cannabis information link, which includes information on county and city policies, an online form for filing community complaints, and an FAQ on cannabis issues in Carpinteria.

Durflinger also discussed the city’s work with Friends of the Library to improve library governance in the city, specifying that because of local voters’ approval of Measure X, “the funding part of this has been taken care of.”

The Council recommended that ViceMayor Al Clark be its representative to the county of Santa Barbara Elected Leaders Forum on homelessness, in recognition of his long service with Home for Good and great knowledge of homeless and housing issues.

Councilmembers also heard several traffic-related matters. The council voted unanimously to approve Resolution No. 5911, concerning changes in timed parking restrictions in Parking Lot No. 1 on the 900 block of Linden Avenue in the Downtown T. After several downtown businesses petitioned the city, the council decided to approve an extension of time limits from one hour to two hours.

A nearly $50,000 contract with Encompass Consultant Group was approved to provide design services for the Pedestrian Crossing Safety Improvements Project, an issue dear to the hearts of many ambulatory Carpinterians. Progress was also made in funding consulting services for the Carpinteria Avenue Bridge Replacement Project. COM3 Consulting will provide project management services for the infrastructure project.

Councilmembers volunteered as standing representatives for a host of local and state committees. Councilman Gregg A. Carty joined the Santa Barbara Joint Affordable Housing Task Group, the South Coast Task Force on Youth Safety, and the council’s Economic Vitality and Finance/Budget Committees. Fred Shaw also elected to represent the city on the Affordable Housing Task Group, along with serving on the city’s Public Safety and Transportation Committees. The newest member, Roy Lee, will serve on the Utilities and First District Supervisor Committees, along with an ad hoc committee on local marijuana policy, where he will be joined by Mayor Nomura.

Elinore Rita Vasta, 82, of Carpinteria, California, passed away on Oct. 11, 2019, at home among family. Elinore was born on July 31, 1937, to William and Doris Malkin in St. Joseph, Michigan.

Survived by her death and loved by Elinore is her husband, Manny, of 62 years; her sons, Gregory of Santa Maria, California, and Patrick of San Francisco, California; her daughters, Kathleen and Susette of Santa Barbara, California; Aimee of Lone Tree, Colorado; her brother, Ken Malkin of Bay City, Michigan; eight grandchildren, and family and friends.

Services will be held in the gazebo at the Carpinteria Cemetery on Monday, Oct. 21, 2019 at 1 p.m.

Margaret Joan Mager 12/4/1933 – 10/6/2019

Margaret Joan Mager, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Oct. 6, 2019.

Margaret was born in San Bruno, California, on Dec. 4, 1933, to John Bazley and Margaret Hearne. She grew up in San Bruno with her brother, Jack Bazley, Jr. In 1955, Margaret married the love of her life, Robert Mager. In 1956, after their first child was born, Margaret and Bob relocated to Santa Barbara. They soon realized they were living in paradise and decided they never wanted to leave. Margaret and Bob enjoyed another 50 years of marriage until Bob passed away in 2006.

Margaret’s most cherished memories were those of spending time with her husband, her children and her grandchildren. Recently, Margaret’s brightest moment was holding her first greatgranddaughter, who was born in June.

Margaret was warm, caring and kind to all that came to know her. She always had a beautiful smile to welcome you into her home. Margaret was a devout Catholic and a member of both St. Raphael’s Catholic Church and Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Margaret is survived by her children, Kathleen Kleine and Rob Mager; her daughter-in-law, Carla Mager; her grandchildren, Jamie Fresch (Steve), Jenna O’Rourke (Ryan), Garrett Mager and Annika Mager; her great-granddaughter, Natalie Fresch; her brother, Jack Bazley, Jr.; and her sister-in-law, Catherine Bazley.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her daughter, Peggy; and her son-in-law, Bill Kleine.

The Mager and Kleine families would like to thank Dr. Robert Wright, the entire GranVida staff, and VNA Health (Hospice) for all the care and comfort given to Margaret. She loved you all like family.

A mass will be held in honor of Margaret on Friday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, with a reception to follow at 12:30 p.m. at Giannfranco’s Trattoria in Carpinteria.

Jennie Ortiz 11/27/1931 – 10/3/2019

Jennie “Juana” Ortiz passed away on Oct. 3, 2019. She was 87 years old.

Jennie was a lifelong resident of Carpinteria. Born on Nov. 27, 1931, she was the daughter of Jesus Sanchez and Ralphaela Romero. She was the sixth of their nine children.

At the age of 16, Jennie married Pasqual Oritz. They raised their family on 9th Street here in Carpinteria. Jennie and Pasqual were married for 63 years before he passed away in 2010. During her life, in addition to raising her own children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jennie also worked for Ms. Shepherd and the lemon packing house here in town.

Jennie loved to cook. One of her favorite things to make was her mother’s famous banana cake. She was also renowned for her homemade salsa (a jar was always in high demand for any occasion). She loved everything about cooking including the pots and pans.

Every Saturday she would go to yard sales and thrift stores. She would teach her grandchildren the value of a good pot or pan and the satisfaction of finding a name brand for a deal.

Jennie had an open-door policy. Nana’s house, as it was known to many, would be greeted by Jennie outside sitting on a bench enjoying a cigarette. She would ask if you were hungry and even if you politely declined you would find yourself minutes later sitting at her kitchen table.

At that point you would be grateful that she insisted because whatever you were eating was always delicious.

Towards the end of her life, Jennie was diagnosed with dementia and even though she forgot details of her full life, if she was reminded you could always see the light in her eyes and a spark of memories flash across her face.

She is survived by her sisters, Josephine Razo and Rosa Maya; children, Irene, Tim, Darlene, Michael (Francine) Ortiz and Debbie (Joe) Durham; stepdaughter, Suzie Ponce; grandchildren, Angela, Amanda, Lia, Miles, Eric, Jessica, Veronica, Dina, Alina, Henry, Denicia and Joseph; her great-grandchildren, Mikey, Tony, Ruben, Monique, Elyse, Ali, Jacob, Chantle, Cedric, Stephen and Christopher; great-great grandchildren, Kolby and Kolton; along with many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Pasqual and granddaughter Leticia Ortiz.

As Fran Davis says, good things come to an end (“Summerland Shore,” CVN, Vol. 26. No. 3). The end of 25 years and more of real news about Summerland events and issues deserves special notice and thanks. Except for an occasional positive comment to her, our neighbor up Whitney, I just accepted her columns without recognition. That has been 44 years for me; we have witnessed so much changing as she says. Everything Fran describes to be missed in leaving here rings true, just like her news. Missing her columns is right up there for me and us old-timers and neighbors in town as a major item for the list.

R e g a rd i n g “ T h ro w b a c k T h u r s day” (CVN Vol. 26, No. 3): Currently the Grapevine (the newsletter of The Carpinteria Valley Museum of History) has published a two-part investigation

into the history of Carpinteria’s theaters that I researched and wrote. In Part II of the series, I address segregation in Carpinteria. I focus on the theatres, of course (Dr. Campos is on the Board of Directors for the Alcazar Theatre), but delve into the schools, too. There I briefly present documentation for the overwhelming community support for building a school for Mexican children, the Aliso School. I actually have quite a bit of evidence on this topic in my files.

Frank Wyckoff, the gold medal track star of three Olympics, was hired as principal and superintendent of schools with the specific mandate of keeping Main School for white children only and making Aliso the de facto school for Mexican children. What an ironic twist that Mr. Wyckoff ran the anchor leg of the 440-relay team as a teammate of Jesse Owens, shattering the myth of Adolph Hitler’s white Aryan supremacy at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Carpinteria Schools desegregated, as did other California schools in 1947, with the Westminster court decision.

My two cents on special education law CVn

a monthly muse melinda wittwer We all know a child that has special needs. We all know these children need and deserve specialized and unique educational services. What we don’t always consider is how the cost of special education in public school impacts the entire school budget.

Federal law requires that students with a disability receive special education from ages 3 to 22. The range of qualifying disabilities includes blindness, deafness, emotional disturbance, intellectual issues, orthopedic impairment, speech or language impairment, visual impairment and traumatic brain injury. Public schools are required to evaluate students as to whether the student’s disability interferes with his or her education. If the evaluator recommends special education services, then the student’s parents, special education teacher, general education teacher, evaluator and school administrator meet and come up with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for meeting the student’s needs.

Now we all know that the best laid plans have problems. During my many years of teaching junior high, I had numerous special ed students in my classroom. Some had been diagnosed years earlier, but many had not. But how does a student with special needs not get tested before reaching the seventh grade? In my experience, many of these students did not have English as their first language and special needs evaluations were delayed because any problems were blamed on the lack of fluent English—or in some cases, no English at all.

I believe that all students should be evaluated as soon as possible. Why? Some students with quite normal intelligence sit in kindergarten and first grade slowly becoming convinced they are stupid because they have a learning disability, and can’t accomplish what most other average students can. But (and there always seems to be a “but”) evaluations and testing are costly and time-consuming. However, the costs related to special education—including low-class size, specifically trained teachers and aides, unique resources and equipment, etc.—make funding these services a big hit to a school’s over-all budget.

To be clear: once a student is evaluated and an IEP is written, this student’s specific needs must, by law, be met. And if for some reason a school cannot meet these needs, the parents or guardians may demand to have their student be sent to a specialized private facility and the public school must pay for this service. But this is a lengthy legal process, as no public school wants to lose a student or have

to pay thousands of dollars to another institution.

Over the years, I observed my school having to provide a specifically trained aide and an intensive computer reading program so a sixth grader could try to reach grade level. The student was in special ed class part of the day, and his parents blamed the school for their son’s problems with reading. What they didn’t want to deal with, was the fact that they couldn’t seem to get their son to school more than about three days a week, and had been sent to court over his truancy problems. I look at education as a triangle involving family, school and the student.

Of course, having all parts of the triangle working is best. With any two parts working there is hope, but it’s much harder if the part of the triangle not working is the student.

Public schools are finding the costs of maintaining a highly needed special ed program with highly-trained staff greatly impacts their budget. The state of California and the federal government are very good about demanding certain programs, but often lack the follow through to fund them appropriately. At some point, schools have to make budget choices. Special ed is required by law.

Libraries and their services, on the other hand, can be trimmed. Music classes can be trimmed. Electives can be trimmed.

Staff can be trimmed.

When I started this “Muse,” I wanted people to realize that a much-needed program for a few students was a drain on the money available to fund programs that supported a greater number of pupils. But I’ve changed my mind. Why must California public schools even be placed in such a dilemma? Why can’t we, a state large enough to be an independent country, provide adequate funds to our public schools? I have to tell you, PTA bake sales won’t solve this problem.

Six months out: Completion of Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road overcrosses

By DeBRA HeRRiCk A s re c e n t c o n g e s tion along Highway 101 comes to a head, Carpinteria residents will be pleased to learn that the bulk of the work is almost done. The current phase of the Highway 101: Linden-Casitas Pass Project is expected to be done and dusted this spring, according to Kirsten Ayars, spokesperson for the project.

Initially, the $60 million Caltrans project that began in 2016 was set to finish at the end of 2020, but despite delays related to the Thomas Fire and subsequent debris flows crews have signaled they’re on track to complete work nearly a year ahead of schedule.

When completed, Casitas Pass overcrossing will include two lanes in each direction, as well as a planted center median.

Linden Avenue overcrossing will have two lanes in the direction of the mountains and one toward the ocean. Via Real will continue over Carpinteria Creek and run adjacent to Highway 101 to Linden Avenue.

The project also includes r a i s i n g t h e h i g h w ay bridges over Carpinteria Creek by 10 feet, new soundwalls along Highway 101, and a new bike path between Via Real and Car pinteria Avenue.

Funded by state and federal taxes, the LindenCasitas Pass project is a partnership between Caltrans, the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments and the city of Carpinteria to improve traffic flow throughout Carpinteria. It is the third of a four-phase plan to widen Highway 101 to three lanes in each direction between Mussel Shoals and Santa Barbara.

Adding a third lane, the fourth phase of the project, is expected to begin in the spring of 2020.

During this next phase, Highway 101 between Bailard Avenue and the city limit (just west of Cravens Lane) will be widened to accommodate an additional lane. While the project will take as many as three years, the disruption will be less than experienced during the recent bridge replacements.

As early as next month, a two-year landscaping program will begin.

Workers have already begun to install irrigation along the highway and in medians.

A new team comes to Carpinteria Eye Care

If luck is where opportunity meets preparation, then Dr. Teresa Mayhew has been lucky indeed. On the day she received her doctorate degree at the Southern California College of Optometry in 1987, a friend and colleague invited her to join his practice in Carpinteria. The ensuing 32-years, she says, have been a rewarding experience serving her patients in Carpinteria.

While running Carpinteria Eye Care and helping her husband with bookkeeping in his real estate business, Dr. Mayhew also raised their two sons (who now attend her undergraduate alma mater at San Francisco State University), which no doubt has made for a very full working life. But after the Jan. 9, 2018 debris flow destroyed their home in Montecito, Dr. Mayhew felt it was the right time to ease out of her optometry practice. The house has been re-built and she looks forward resuming her family life there.

On the other end of the work-life spectrum, Dr. Steven M. Kleen (also a graduate of the Southern California College of Optometry), purchased the practice with his father, Dr. Steven R. Kleen, an optometrist as well, in December of last year.

The junior Dr. Kleen played professional baseball for five years in the minor league with the Oakland Athletics before pursuing optometry. He attended Pepperdine

University where he played Division I baseball and was honored as a Division I All American and Academic AllAmerican, as well as Pepperdine Scholar Athlete of the Year. Dr. Kleen graduated with a degree in Sports Medicine. When he is not seeing patients, the doctor enjoys surfing, biking and spending quality time with his wife and four children. In regards to eye care, his interests include specialty

contact lens fitting, myopia control, ocular disease treatment and management, and sports vision. Dr. Kleen’s father (also a college athlete in track and baseball) joins his son in the practice and daughter, Kristen Hughes, a pediatrician, in serving the people of Carpinteria.

Keeping continuity in the practice is important to Dr. Kleen, and he brings a client-focused approach to his business.

Dr. Mayhew’s longtime receptionist Elizabeth Quiroga (who also keeps detailed records straight), will continue to greet patients at the front desk and on the telephone. Additionally, Optician Joe Vega, with 40 years of experience in the eye care industry, rounds-out the new Carpinteria Eye Care roster and notes that he enjoys educating customers on the latest developments in lens technology.

Teen activist swims Channel to protect the ocean

At 3 a.m. on Oct. 9, 16-year-old Paige Kieding jumped into the inky black water surrounding Anacapa Island. Her goal was to swim the 12.4 miles across the Channel to Silver Strand Beach, Oxnard.

Seven hours and one minute later, she stepped onto the sand, greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of well-wishers (and two relieved and exhilarated grandparents, Carpinterians Lynda Hershey and Stephen Joyce).

A young environmental activist and athlete, Keiding, a junior at San Marcos High School, swam the Channel to raise money and awareness for Santa Barbara Channelkeeper. Her goal was to raise $3,000.

“This swim was a dream of mine for quite some time, and something I trained for for over a year,” said Keiding. “I’ve always loved being in the ocean. It gives me a sense of inner peace that’s hard to find anywhere else… Marathon swimming makes me feel confident, brave and empowered. It allows me to push myself and discover what I’m truly capable of.”

Keiding chose to use this swim as a platform to raise money for the Channelkeeper because she is passionate about their cause. “I’ve grown up spending most of my days hanging out at the harbor, or the beach, or more recently, spending hours and hours in the ocean,

The Channelkeeper is making a huge impact in their efforts to do just that, which is why I wanted to use this swim as a platform to support their cause.”

She then did the Bridge to Bridge (Golden Gate to Oakland Bay bridges as well as two Semana Nautical swims. Last year, she completed the first two-person relay swim from Anacapa Island.

Major Roy McBride of the United States Space Command is a cool customer.

He’s got ice in his veins. Strap him to a rocket, knock him off his footing thousands of feet in the air, shoot at him, yell at him, punch him—he won’t blink.

Even so, the mission he’s given in “Ad Astra” would flap even the most unflappable men. You see, McBride (Brad Pitt) has another claim to fame besides having the most even keel in the shipyard: his dad, H. Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), was a super famous astronaut/ space explorer. Unfortunately, his dad’s most famous mission ended in apparent disaster. It was called “The Lima Project” and the mission was to travel all the way to Neptune in search of extra-terrestrial life. But when the Lima Project suddenly

lost contact with mission control, everyone assumed the worst until 30 years later, when super-destructive cosmic rays started being emitted from around Neptune.

The Space Command top brass think it’s McBride Sr. They think he’s still alive, maybe disgruntled, and is sending the angry, civilization-threatening rays toward Earth as revenge or attack.

That’s where McBride Jr. comes in.

Space Command wants him to travel to Mars, where they can send a signal to Neptune to try to get in contact with his dad. He accepts the mission in the same way you or I would agree to pass the ketchup.

But cracks in his visage begin to emerge. It’s not the travel—first to the moon, then on to Mars—nor is it the space combat, terrifying mayday calls, or other near-misses. It’s his dad. The man who abandoned him and his mother.

The man who didn’t care enough to give them a second thought. The man who he nonetheless loves and admires and is just like in so many ways. That’s who and what is breaking him down, causing him to doubt and worry and rage, and finally, for the first time, to unveil his humanity.

But just a little. Roy McBride’s demeanor is still mostly calm, his affect flat.

“the physical accomplishments of this young athlete are outstanding. But what I see as Paige’s most outstanding action is that she put the spotlight not on herself, but on protecting our environment and furthering the mission of Channelkeeper.

Seeing such community-minded action by today’s youth should challenge us all to consider what more we each can do.”

And it’s the same with the movie. It is intentionally subdued. It has the serenity of the steadiest of astronauts. Epic, cosmic scenery is accompanied by stillness, quiet.

Dramatic action sequences are dulled by an understated score. Dead bodies are floated out into space as a matter of course. McBride presses a button, pulls a lever, does his duty.

However, like McBride, while the film is calm, even remote, it is also, importantly, not emotionless. Quite the opposite. In movies like this, epic scenes from space—as a character speeds past Jupiter or enters Mars’ atmosphere—are typically accompanied by dramatic, soaring music, or a church organ witnessing to the grandiosity of the galactic cathedral. But imagine floating nearby Neptune—cold, dark, vast, hauntingly blue—in utter, complete silence. Imagine what that would feel like. It would have to be otherworldly, surreal, lonely and terrifying.

One of the things “Ad Astra” does so well, besides imagining and delivering on a well-composed vision of the future, is reveal the intense, powerful emotions that underlie McBride’s placid demeanor and, perhaps more to the point, his deep, dark depression.

“Ad Astra” could have benefited from more time to develop these subtleties. It could have been a miniseries, for example. Still, the film is an emotional accomplishment, a tribute to Pitt’s acting and James Gray’s directing. It’s not all rocket blasts, explosions and fiery destruction.

It’s cold, dark, icy, lonely space—the vast haunting, dwarfing unknown.

“Ad Astra” is rated PG-13 for some violence and bloody images, and for brief strong language.

Scott Sorich named Warriors Head Boys Basketball Coach

Carpinteria High School has announced that Scott Sorich will take over as Head Boys Basketball Coach, effective immediately. “We are excited to bring in a coach with great passion for growing good people through basketball,” said Carpinteria High School Athletic Director Pat Cooney. “Coach Sorich brings experience and connections to some of the best basketball programs in the area,” he added.

Sorich has dedicated the last decade to teaching basketball to high school and youth players in Ventura County. His love of basketball arose in his youth and was cultivated when he attended Santa Clara High School in Oxnard, California, under the coaching and mentoring of legendary high school coach, Lou Cvijanovich. During his time at Santa Clara as a studentathlete, his team won the 1997 CIF Southern Section Championship.

From 2012-2014 Sorich was an assistant coach for his high school alma mater, Santa Clara. Later, he joined the coaching staff at St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, where he was both a varsity assistant, as well

as the head coach for the JV program. As an assistant, he helped lead the team to four consecutive Tri-Valley League championships and into the 2018 CIF-SS FourAA championship game. Under his leadership, the JV teams also notched three consecutive undefeated Tri-Valley League seasons.

Coach Sorich is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and is currently working towards his teaching credential in mathematics. He is also the director of the Ventura County Swoosh youth basketball program that he founded in 2010. Sorich and his wife Denise dedicate their time to family and enjoy teaching, mentoring and working with high school students in both athletic and academic arenas. “I am grateful for the opportunity to lend my experience and share my enthusiasm and love of the game with Carpinteria High School and student athletes,” said the new Warrior coach. “I am excited to get to know the players and look forward to a successful future with the boys basketball program.”

On Friday, Oct. 11, the Carpinteria High School football team stayed even with Santa Paula in the first half, heading into the locker room tied at 7-7. But taking advantage of good field position and an interception, the Cardinals scored two touchdowns in the third quarter en route to a 34-14 Citrus Coast League (CCL) victory at Valley Memorial Stadium. The loss drops the Warriors to 1-6 overall, finishing 0-4 in the CCL. Santa Paula improves to 3-4 and 1-1 in league.

Carpinteria got off to a good start for the second week in a row. Tyler Cervantes recovered a fumble giving Carpinteria a first down at their own 41, however the Warriors were unable to move the chains, punting on fourth down. The home team once again stopped the Cardinals and was again in good position to score following a short punt.

Starting at the Santa Paula 34, the Warriors moved the ball to the 25, but on fourth down, quarterback Diego Mendez’ pass fell incomplete and the visitors took over on downs. Carpinteria then forced another turnover. Julian Contreras pounced on a fumble at his own 32. With 3:03 left in the first quarter, lightning struck. Mendez’ pass bounced off the hands of a defender into the arms of Diego Hernandez who raced 68 yards for the score, and the Warriors led 7-0.

Carpinteria took the lead into the second quarter, but not for long. Zuniga connected with Victor Duran on a 30-yard scoring pass, tying the game at 7-7 less than a minute into the quarter. The Warriors had another opportunity to get on the scoreboard near the end of the half, but a 32-yard field goal attempt went wide and the game remained tied. “Overall, we’re playing better, we’re executing better, defense is solid,” said Warriors coach Mario Robinson.

At the start of the second half, Carpinteria was forced to punt deep in their own

end. As a result, Santa Paula started on the Warrior 46. Five plays later, Zuniga hooked up with Jovon Grandison who carried it down to the two. From there, Zuniga ran it in to give the Cardinals their first lead. The missed extra point made it 13-7 with 7:01 left in the third quarter.

On the Warriors’ ensuing possession, Gabriel Escamilla intercepted a third down pass, returning it to the Warrior 26. Less than two minutes later, Santa Paula punctuated the short drive with a five-yard Cristian Marceleno touchdown run and Gabriel Martinez carried in the two-point conversion, bringing the lead to 21-7.

“That’s where we’re struggling right now is that second half, coming out of that break because we’re cold, and we need to be able to start right back up,” explained Robinson, the first year coach whose seen his squad dwindle down from over 30 players to 20 at some points because of injuries.

The Cardinals tacked on another score early in the fourth quarter to make it 27-7, but Carpinteria wasn’t finished yet. After a blocked punt and recovery by Hernandez, Mendez drove his team and drilled a 23-yard touchdown pass to Christian Quintero, the score at 27-14. The Cardinals earned one more score in the final minute to close out the game.

Mendez completed 10 of 32 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

Ever Santamaria led the Warriors in rushing yardage with six yards on two carries and Hernandez led the team in receiving yardage with 84 yards on two receptions.

Carpinteria plays their final home game of the year, the homecoming game versus Kennedy of Granada Hills tomorrow night with the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Blasting through the Cardinals’ defense, Ever Santamaria gains yardage for the Warriors. Despite some solid play, the Carpinteria High School football team is still coalescing as a unit.

Junior Warriors Player of the Week Sophomore: Richie “Gumby” Renteria is a first-year player who has made great gains to become the starting defensive end. October 10 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team started and never looked back in a 3-0 win against Santa Paula. “Outside hitter Number-two Malia Shellabarger and Number-nine Sadie Mead we’re both unstoppable at the net,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Opposite Sarah Weitzman Number-eight added 11 kills and two aces for the Warriors. Setter Marlene Sanchez, Number-seven, yielded 28 assists. The match scores were 25-16, 25-17 and 25-19. Carpinteria’s overall record improves to 8-7 and Citrus Coast League record registers in at 5-4.

October 14 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team was able to take sets one and two in their match against Hueneme, but the Vikings proved triumphant in the end, winning the fifth set 15-12 to capture a 3-2 victory in games. Outside hitter Number-nine Sadie Mead ended the night with 15 kills and 32 digs. Number-two outside Malia Shellabarger provided 12 kills and 26 digs. Opposite Sarah Weitzman Number-eight added another seven kills and 14 digs. Setter Marlene Sanchez Numberseven helped the Warriors with 38 assists. Libero Number-14 Emily Montoya had a record high 37 digs back row. “Congratulations to the seven Carpinteria Warrior seniors: Eva Gropper, Adriana Campozano, Sarah Weitzman, Sadie Mead, Emily Montoya, Yarely Navarro, and Michelle Alpizar,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia.

Carpinteria now has an overall record of 8-8 and a Citrus Coast League mark of 5-5.

October 14 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team dropped a Citrus Coast League (CCL) match to the Hueneme team, 10-8. Mercy Torres/Lexi Persoon and Jeannette Carrillo/Zahra Porinsh each went 1-2 on the day. The other six points were from the singles play of Sydney Endow and Emma Lapidus who each swept and dropped three games each. “The Vikings were tough especially in doubles where they won seven of their points,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “The sets were much closer than the scores indicated, but again, Hueneme proved to win the big points and handle the pressure better,” explained Bryant. Carpinteria is now 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the CCL.

October 10 - The Cate School girls volleyball team won their fourth five-set match of the season against St. Bonaventure, 3-2 Thursday night in a victory on campus on the mesa. St. Bonnie’s took the first set, winning 25-21, but the Rams fought back to win the second set, 26-24. Once again St. Bonnie’s fought back to come within three points at 23- 20, but two kills by the Rams finished the set out at 25-21. In the continued to exchange leads up to a 14-14 tie. Cate managed to capture the last two points for the set and match win. “This match was truly a match to remember, the coaches have experienced a lot of exciting matches at Cate; but this win was truly a grind to the finish, each point was a battle with long rallies and great defensive and offensive plays by both teams,” said Rams coach Greg Novak. With one match left, the Tri-Valley League title is still at stake. Cate needs to beat Grace Brethren to claim the title. A loss would mean the Rams would be in a flat-foot tie with Foothill Tech. Cate is now 15-3, 6-1 in league.

October 15 - The Cate School girls volleyball team clinched the Tri-Valley League title on “senior night” with a 3-1 win over Grace Brethren on the mesa. “Seniors Kenzie Davidson, Maya Blattberg and Grace Blankenhorn displayed their talent in the first set with a decisive 25-13 victory,” said Rams coach Greg Novak. Sophomore middle, Chidera Chukwumerije lead the team with 12 kills and five blocks. Junior setter Riley Borchardt and sophomore hitter Elise Guerrand-Hermes both had 11 kills. Cate finishes the season, 7-1. Cate will await the post on Saturday for the first round of CIF Playoff announcements.

On Oct. 14, Cate School’s Maya Blattberg was honored as the Scholar Athlete of the Year at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s weekly luncheon. She is a four-year starter on the volleyball team and a three-year returning starter for the basketball team. While holding a gradepoint average of 4.3, Blattberg also works as a volunteer with the National Charity League. In basketball, she was second team all-league as a sophomore and last year won the team’s Coach’s Award. In volleyball, she was also named All-CIF as a setter and an outside hitter last year after she helped lead the Rams to the Division Seven quarterfinals.

Shelterbox provides essentials

Carrie Baptista, special gifts officer for Shelterbox USA, recently spoke to the Morning Rotary Club about the organization’s efforts in providing disaster relief across the world. In hard plastic boxes, Shelterbox sends a heavy-duty tent, a cook set and tools to people displaced by natural disasters or armed conflict.
