Families woke up early again on Monday, Aug. 27, as Carpinteria’s schools kicked off the 2018-19 school year. By bus, bike, skateboard, scooter and on foot, students found their way from the breakfast table to the classroom door. Victor Moctezuma caught his bus early in Carpinteria en route to the Alpha School in Santa Barbara. An enthusiastic student, Moctezuma graduated this spring from Carpinteria Unified School District’s program Success in Education of Adult Life Skills (SEALS), before starting school as an adult-learner at Alpha through the Santa Barbara County Office of Education. Marijuana facility robbery suspects arrested

Two suspects are in custody following an attempted robbery on Wednesday morning, Aug. 29, at a marijuana cultivation facility located in the 1500 block of Casitas Pass Road in Carpinteria. At approximately 6:25 a.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to an alarm at the facility. Employees reported that a group of suspects had broken into the grounds and sprayed one of the employees with pepper spray before fleeing in a white U-Haul van with Arizona license plates.

Sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers located the vehicle heading southbound on Highway 101. When the vehicle exited Victoria Avenue in Ventura, CHP officers conducted a felony stop and arrested the two occupants inside the vehicle.

Pepper spray was recovered inside the van. The Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the incident and the possibility that more suspects were involved.

Children’s Project to host book fair

The Carpinteria Children’s Project, 5201 8th St., will hold its annual Scholastic Book Fair fundraiser Tuesday, Sept. 4, through Friday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. in the CCP auditorium. “With books in both English and Spanish, the Book Fair is a great place to pick up birthday or holiday presents, as well as books for one’s own family to enjoy,” said Early Childhood Education Program Director Martha Haro. The Children Project’s Open House will be held on Thursday, Sept. 7, and the book fair will be open until 6 p.m. on that night, with story time and refreshments along with staff from LinkedIn who will help with festivities. Book sales will help the Children’s Project’s library grow, and provide teachers with funds for classroom supplies.

HopeNet to hold Suicide Prevention Day vigil

HopeNet of Carpinteria is sponsoring a candlelight vigil in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Linden Field (at the foot of Linden Avenue near the seal statue) in Carpinteria.

“This event will honor the memory of those who have committed suicide, survivors and those impacted by suicide. It will also increase awareness relative to mental wellness, suicide and suicide prevention,” said Dr. Amrita Salm, president of HopeNet of Carpinteria. “We will have music, speakers, candles, refreshments and a resource table, as well as therapists available to speak to interested persons.”

Scheduled speakers include First District Supervisor Das Williams; Dr. Van DoReynoso, director of Santa Barbara County Department of Public Health; Diana Rigby, superintendent of Carpinteria Unified School District; Alejandro Vasquez of Compassionate Care of Carpinteria; and a student from the Wellness Connection Club at Carpinteria High School. Spanish translation will be available.

Mullikin receives Bronze Star Medal

Sgt. Merv Mullikin is presented with the Bronze Star Medal by Congressman Salud Carbajal with the support of other local veterans.

On Tuesday, Aug. 28, Congressman Salud Carbajal presented Sgt. Merv Mullikin with the Bronze Star Medal at the Santa Barbara Courthouse Sunken Gardens for his military service in the Vietnam War. Mullikin was in A Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Division of the Army, also known as “Black Knights.” His battalion was on a large-scale clearing and pacification offensive called Operation Pershing on the Bong Son coastal plain in the Binh Dinh province when his company was ambushed by North Vietnamese Army soldiers.

At battle’s end, six U.S. soldiers had been killed and 18 wounded. In June 1968, Mullikin was awarded a Bronze Star for his military service and in November of that year, a Presidential Unit Citation.

However, Mullikin never received notification and it was not until this year, upon requesting his military records that Mullikin discovered the awards had been issued in his name. Upon hearing that Mullikin had not received the commendation, Congressman Carbajal organized a ceremony in the veteran’s honor to personally issue the Bronze Star.

“It was a very moving experience,”

said Mullikin after the ceremony. “Not only receiving the reward but it’s a healing process for me. There were so many Vietnam veterans there it really made it special.”

Among the dozens of veterans at the ceremony, one was a helicopter pilot who, said Mullikin, “was one of the pilots who dropped my company off right before the ambush. Five minutes later he received a phone call that we had been ambushed. Imagine that. All that time and distance, and here we meet again. I’m getting the pride back that I felt when I first got home.”

Right wing on left coast

This is regarding the CVN issue of August 23, 2018 (“Letters,” Vol. 24, No. 48). I just wanted to express my gratitude to you for including some views from the conservative side. I was quite surprised to see several excellent letters expressing very good points on defending our President and it was quite reassuring that we haven’t been completely silenced yet. These days with Antifa and other activist groups, a person can be targeted with unwanted violence and vandalism.

I remember growing up in California and seeing all kinds of bumper stickers and no one would go crazy if you didn’t agree with their point of view. A lot has changed since becoming a one-party state. Thank you for your courage to print the other side.

The Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, also rejects the idea that illegal immigration is tied to increases in violent crime. Their study published in February found that native-born Texas residents were most likely to commit and be convicted of crimes while unauthorized immigrants saw a conviction rate that was about 50 percent lower. Legal immigrants appeared to be the most law-abiding, with 86 percent fewer convictions than native-born Texans.

Mr. Parham is also confused and says the left is the definition of Nazi. That’s when you know someone doesn’t know how to make an argument and can’t be taken seriously. He also complained about people “shutting down debate” but remains silent when the president calls our free press “the enemy of the people,” except for Fox News! Ahh, the hypocrisy! Turn off Fox News and use more common sense.

A problem with facts

Reading conservative viewpoints from last week’s paper (CVN, “Letters,” Vol. 24, No. 48), two thoughts came to mind: “lack of substantiation” and “empty rhetoric.” And despite Robert Parham’s shock at “leftists” in our community expressed in his letter “#walkaway,” the majority of Santa Barbara county and California are progressive, thank god.

In “Who killed Mollie Tibbets?,” Allan Roscoe vented his anger with an undocumented immigrant killing a white girl, Mollie Tibbets. But many studies using federal and state data have found no suggestion that rising immigration rates leads to more violent crime. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal Justice showed a 118-percent increase in America’s immigrant population since 1980, yet during this same period, the rate of violent crime—homicides, rapes, robberies and assaults—fell by 36 percent. A hero to all parties

The only public official in our country who refuses to honor and acknowledge our hero Sen. John McCain it seems is our president. I am disgusted.

Sen. John McCain was not only a great hero of the Vietnam War, but devoted the rest of his life in service to our country with integrity, honor, justice, compassion and a love of all Americans. He was proud of our country and would have made a distinguished president, and I am a Democrat.

It is a great misfortune for us that we have a president in office who in every way is the opposite of Sen. McCain.

Please get out and vote so we can change the direction in which our country is headed.

Make Americans grateful again

I have a bumper sticker on my car: Make Americans grateful again.

A floodgate of me first, me only, me, me, me is so apparent in the last round of CVN letters (“Letters,” Vol. 24, No. 48), it compels me to offer another view.

Someone was lamenting free education, another that our forefathers didn’t get free help so why should all these presumably lazy Americans get free stuff?

Illegal people are killing our children.

(Would it be ok if the killer was a citizen?) People are actually receiving food stamps… horror. Exaggerated opinions not based on data or facts skew the reality that many people need a helping hand in their lives. And we as a society should give it to them.

There is enough of everything to go around, except maybe compassion.

I ask you all, have you lost your collective minds? Supposedly, this is a society defined as a highly structured system of human organization for large-scale community living that normally furnishes protection, continuity, security and a national identity for its members. Works for me.

As they say “a rising tide lifts all boats,” neatly explaining comprehensive education and health care, healthy food options and the security of a roof over one’s head. An educated child is a leader of tomorrow. A healthy human being is contributing to the overall society, by nothing more than not being sick. These arguments are so old, they supersede even the Constitution. Because they are based on common sense.

But aware and educated, healthy, secure people may not appreciate the haves having more. There is amorphous fear here. I got mine and screw you! I’m not sure how, but I know you want mine!

Work for it or die!

Obituary

Danny and Robin Sola 1954 – 2018

Danny and Robin Sola were both born in 1954. They passed away at the age of 64 on Aug. 6, 2018 in Carpinteria, California.

Robin is survived by her sisters Janet, Bonnie and Elaine. Danny is survived by his sister Diane and grandson Alex.

Robin worked at Lucas Films, and later, as a speech pathologist at Cottage Hospital. Danny was an aeronautical mechanic, wood artisan and farmer. Robin and Danny were sweethearts at Coronado High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. Life paths took them separate ways until 10 years ago when they fell in love all over again and married.

They died peacefully together, handin-hand.

Council votes to appeal Planning Commission’s approval of five-unit residential project

At the August 27, 2018 meeting, in a unanimous 5-0 vote, the City Council approved the appeal of a previously approved planning Commission project. the project in question is a proposal to remodel and convert an existing singlefamily home and detached garage located at 1112 Linden Ave. into a five-unit multifamily residential apartment. As is city council process, this issue earned a place on the agenda when two councilmembers expressed concern for traffic and safety at the location and asked to revisit the approval. in reference to the project having been previously approved by the planning Commission, Councilmember Stein commented, “i think staff did look at it on paper, but sometimes you find that what’s on paper in front of you, isn’t what really fits a neighborhood. I think for us as a community and what we think of as Carpinteria and being neighborly, this is an obligation we have as a council to maybe give more direction not only to staff but to our planning Commission and our ARb (Architectural Review Board). We can’t just look at things in a vacuum we have to look at: how it affects the neighborhood and how it affects the community; and i do support the appeal and looking at it in more detail.”

While the council members and former council member donna Jordan all spoke of concerns with the project, additional comments were made in support of the remodel. Architect for the project, ellen bildsten spoke to the fact that she and the owner have been working closely well over a year with zoning staff to work on issues with parking, access and turning radius on the property. during this time bildsten stated that they worked collaboratively with staff in attempts to satisfy any concerns. She continued, “It’s a little hard to understand the need for this project to be appealed at this point given the amount of scrutiny it has been under and the amount of changes that have occurred in order to address all of the concerns that were being brought to our attention.”

Also in favor of the project moving forward, owner Arvand Sabetian directly addressed traffic safety, the Council’s main concern, by bringing up the precedent set by other projects similarly classified and highlighting the fact that this project helps to fulfill the city’s housing need. he stated, “if this project is unsafe,

Restoring soil health class

Rincon High School students learn history firsthand from GranVida “grandparent” buddies

GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care is bridging the gap between the young and older generations through its Grandparent Buddy Program in partnership with Rincon High School. Inspired by the Elder Buddy Project at Ventura’s Pacific High School, the program encourages Rincon students to spend time with and to learn from seniors as part of their high school education.

“The essence of the project is to get senior citizens living in independent and assisted living homes to have conversations, share stories and maybe even create some kind of relationship with teenagers,” said Audria Culaciati, coordinator for the program. “Academically, the students utilize senior citizens as primary sources in researching academic topics in subject matters like history, economics and English. The Grandparent Buddy Program has had a positive impact on both Rincon students and GranVida residents. “The kids in the program that come to visit some of our residents connect with them in a very special way,” said Felipe Garcia, activities coordinator for GranVida. “It also benefits our residents … by interacting with these kids and getting the feeling of being positive role models for them.”

Channel Islands Restoration works to protect the Carpinteria Salt Marsh

By Christian Beamish European sea lavender (Limonium duriusculum), a non-native plant, threatens to outcompete California sea lavender (Limonium californicum) in the Carpinteria Salt Marsh—approximately 230 acres of intertidal estuarine wetlands bordering the west end of the City of Carpinteria, and habitat for many species of plants, birds, mammals, fish, sharks and rays.

In response, Channel Islands Restoration staff and volunteers have started work on a four-year project to eradicate the European sea lavender by hand.

Fortunately, the plant is fairly easy to pull-out, roots and all, by hand. “We are authorized to use herbicide and plastic tarps (to smother the plants),” said CIR Operations Manager and Senior Ecologist Elihu Gevirtz, “but we want to avoid it if possible.”

Funded by UCSB Associated Students’ Coastal Fund, the Wildlife Conservation Board through the Upper Salinas-Las Tablas Resource Conservation District, and by the land trust for Santa Barbara County, the eradication of European sea lavender has the ultimate goal of preserving the endangered salt marsh bird’s-beak plant. Salt marsh bird’s-beak supports native fauna such as the Crotch’s bumblebee that can open the protective hood of the bird’s-beak plant for pollination, which the more prolific (and invasive) European honeybee cannot.

The salt marsh bird’s-beak in the Carpinteria Salt Marsh, concentrated primarily on the berm area adjacent Sand Point Road on the western edge of the preserve, is one of just seven populations in the world. The plant only grows in Central and Southern California salt marshes such as the ones found in Morro Bay, Carpinteria, Mugu Lagoon, Upper Newport Bay and the Tijuana River Estuary.

As the European sea lavender is removed the plant material will be placed in plastic bags and taken to the landfill rather than be allowed to compost, as the plant’s seeds would eventually disperse and end up propagating elsewhere, Gevirtz explained. Volunteers are at the core of the restoration effort, and financial contributions to the non-profit Channel

Flood Control District, estimated that 22,000 cubic yards of sediment had been removed from Salt Marsh channels by drag-line (a crane-hoisted bucket dragged through channels) in emergency operations after the Jan. 9 debris flows earlier this year. Another approximately 26,000 cubic yards were removed from Salt Marsh channels by hydraulic dredge, Spencer said. She estimates that 12,000 cubic yards remain in Santa Monica and Franklin Creek’s concrete-lined channels, but conceded that that is a “really rough, seat-of-the-pants” number. “It could be 18,000 cubic yards,” Spencer added.

The issue is twofold: the primary concern is to get the sediment removed ahead of rainy season to reduce the risk of flooding in the City of Carpinteria, and the secondary concern is to ensure that the Salt Marsh has a healthy tidal flow to function properly in its role of fish habitat and spawning area. Sediment is being piled up by bulldozer in the concrete-lined channels to “de-water” before getting scooped up with excavators and transferred to trucks for disposal at upland disposal sites, Spencer said.

She noted that “the work is done from downstream up,” and will likely continue until the end of September.

CIR is rehabbing a nursery on the Greenwell Reserve property in Summerland, and seeds for projects are harvested within two miles of restoration sites to ensure that plants’ genetics, which are adapted to very specific locations, are kept intact. I hope to paint a picture of the resilient abundance that is possible in the spaces around our homes, condos, apartments, trailers and farms.

Drawing on the diverse and robust ecosystems surrounding us in Southern California, we can craft landscapes that more deeply honor the elements that make this area such a lovely place to live.

One of the most important considerations in designing more-sustainable home landscapes is water conservation.

Along this stretch of the Pacific, we receive most of our moisture from just a few months of winter storms brought ashore by shifting ocean currents. This limited rainfall has created plant and animal communities uniquely adapted to long periods of drought. As home gardeners, I believe it is our responsibility to ensure that as much rainfall as possible stays in California wildlands, nurturing the ecosystems that ultimately sustain us.

There are several meaningful steps we can all take towards water-conserving gardens that are both lovely and functional. Previously, I wrote about building healthy soil through the addition of compost, compost tea, and a thick layer of wood or leaf mulch. Healthy soil is the backbone of an organic garden, as well as a “water bank” that dramatically decreases the need for supplemental irrigation during the dry season. As you build the soil it becomes looser and more porous, with space surrounding each soil particle. Rain and irrigation fill the spaces between these particles, which is then slowly released back to plant roots.

We can increase the earth’s waterstoring capacity even more by creating contour and low-lying areas, or even ponds. Creating a topographically varied landscape using berms and swales (earth mounds) allows more opportunity for rainwater to sink in and recharge groundwater levels. At the community garden, we built several attractive rocklined trenches, planted with native waterloving plants to slow the flow of water out of the garden, allowing more water to sink into the soil, while providing food

The Carpinteria Garden Park’s rain water catchment system consists of roof line gutters funneling into a 750-gallon water tank. Once the tank is full, gardeners attach hoses to irrigate vegetables and fruit trees nearby.

The garden hopes to expand this system with at least one additional tank to increase rain water harvesting. and shelter for monarch butterflies and flocks of sparrows.

Another important step towards water conservation is to transition above-ground sprinkler systems to drip irrigation. Drip irrigation is exactly what it sounds like—tubes with holes punched in them that slowly release water drop by drop to plant roots. Drip systems use less water and deliver it more effectively— much of the spray from above-ground systems evaporates instantly on hot days, gets foliage wet, invites disease and compacts soil via spray pressure, causing erosion.

Landscaping with native plants is a wonderful way to conserve water while providing food and refuge for the many beneficial insects, birds and animals able to co-exist in urban landscapes. Native plants are extremely drought-tolerant, bloom almost year-round, and have many edible and medicinal uses. They are so drought-adapted that a common mistake with natives is over-watering—they respond vigorously to the most minimal of drip irrigation programs.

Other options include systems for recycling household water and rainwater catchment through the installation of “laundry-to-landscape” gray water systems and rain barrels or cisterns.

Laundry-to-landscape systems recycle household water from washing machines, sinks and showers into the garden as irrigation. Rain barrels or cisterns attached to roof gutters catch and store rainfall that otherwise shoots out of gutters, undermines foundations and floods streets.

Make sure to find a barrel designed to allow you to hook into it for future irrigation needs.

This spring, community garden members built a culinary herb spiral.

Members mounded soil, added loads of compost, and laid a drip line for irrigation. The paths between the spiral were mulched to allow any rain runoff to be captured and held within the spiral. barrels and smarter irrigation. Building a water-wise home garden is an important step towards creating more sustainable urban landscapes. Gardens can be both beautiful and useful, becoming lush oases that store rainwater to grow food, provide a home for urban

birds and animals, and celebrate the changing seasons with cycles of flower and fruit.

Back in the black

How hard work, local support and the summer season helped businesses find solid ground STORy AND PhOTOS

By DeBRA heRRICK Summer has been good to local business owners, but they’re not out of the water yet. The winter was devastating economically for Carpinteria businesses who struggled to stay afloat financially throughout the evacuations and dangerous air quality brought on by the Thomas Fires and then the virtual isolation that resulted from the Jan. 9 debris flow event.

Businesses received support from different safety nets—insurance, FEMA, federal loans, private bank loans, discounted rent and family fundraisers. Carpinteria’s local residents also provided muchneeded support as community members rallied throughout the spring months to keep “Carp Strong” by shopping and eating local.

As Santa Barbara County Supervisor Das Williams put it: “Some places in the south have recovered more than others, Carpinteria and Coast Village (Montecito), have recovered the most, more than Upper Village (Montecito), Santa Barbara and Summerland. Some businesses like retail (in those areas) were not doing well before the disasters and this has peaked it.”

One likely factor is dependence on tourist- versus local-patrons. Several Carpinteria businesses explained that it was local residents who came out en masse throughout the spring that provided the economic climate required to remain open through to summer.

As summer winds down, CVN caught up with local businesses to ask the question: After the summer tourist season, have businesses recovered from winter? In short, businesses are recovering, emphasis on “-ing.” Nevertheless, businesses are optimistic as they look toward the future.

The Worker Bee Café buzzes with local patrons

“We’re still recovering,” said Rick Mancilla who owns Worker Bee Café with his father, also named Rick. The Worker Bee was closed for over five weeks in December and January because of the Thomas Fires and subsequent debris flow event. When Hwy 101 shut down after the mudslide, The Worker Bee’s purveyors up north couldn’t get into Carpinteria for deliveries.

“In February, we did better than usual once we opened because people were eager to be out and act like life was normal again… We wrapped up the slow months a little better than we usually would have.”

“Life is owning a family business,” said the older Mancilla as he made the rounds greeting customers during the lunch rush.

Crushcakes Café gives locals that athome feeling

Winter was a real struggle for Shannon Gaston, owner of Crushcakes Café. Her downtown Carpinteria eatery made it through hard times by working with local businesses and local people. Crushcake’s landlord in Carpinteria discounted rent for the months of January to March. “That

saved me,” said Gaston. The landlords for her Crushcakes locations in Santa Barbara and Goleta did not offer discounted rent.

Gaston also credits banking local to getting a quick loan that helped with payroll after the mudslide.

Crushcakes did alright financially in late winter and spring, according to Gaston. “A lot of businesses closed and so the ones that stayed open, I think people felt at home here and comfortable. I tried to stay open as long as possible and that really kept us going. A lot of staff couldn’t get here, they were trapped; I kept saying, ‘I don’t want to open to make money, but to give people a place to be.’ We actually got a lot of new people coming in during that time. Starbucks and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf were closed and people just wanted a place to sit.”

But Gaston isn’t as optimistic this year as she’s been in the previous seven years since she opened. She’s worried about natural disasters and the impact on families, the community and the business.

“That feeling of fear and panic every time the internet went down. One of my son’s best friends died in the mudslides, so I’m nervous about what’s going to happen—

generally devastated.”

Nutbelly Pizzeria turns lemons into lemonade

During the two weeks that Nutbelly Pizzeria closed during the winter disasters, owner Janna Gonzalez went into the restaurant every day and made meals out of the food that would otherwise have gone to waste—and delivered it to first responders.

“Winter was a big financial hit,” said Gonzalez, “We still had to pay rent and take care of some employees. And then we did a lot of fundraising for the community, like the Kick Ash Bash.”

But as soon as the fires and mudslides were over, “locals came in and saved it (Nutbelly). Most of all my neighbors— businesses like Guichos, Pacific Health, all the boutiques. We helped each other out. The clothing stores would send customers over and we rocked their clothes,” said Gonzalez.

“Locals supported us. We had a surprising comeback.”

Time capsule preserves art center’s history PhoToS By DAvID PowDRell Carpinteria Arts Center members have hidden mementos in the framed-in walls of the center’s new gallery. Local artist Christie Boyd proposed the “time capsule,” an exhibition that will be up for decades, albeit unseen.

CAC Executive Director Rebecca Stebbins reported, “I was surprised by what people brought: original artworks, a book of poetry signed by the poet, a CD by the recording artist, letters, notes, prints, little clay sculptures, sketches. Most surprising to me is that some people brought in art that they created as children—from as long ago as 1950, including a darling ceramic elephant, a sketch made by a high school student in 1976, CVN articles, a porcelain box, a fabric box, a gold box, all with notes or trinkets inside, a photo of someone’s mother from the 1950s.”

If someday the building outlives its useful lifespan and the walls are destroyed or decayed, the people of 100 years from now and beyond will be surprised to discover “the little gems between the studs,” added David Powdrell, CAC board chair.

The community can stop by this Saturday, Sept. 1 between 10 a.m. and noon to add to the time capsule. Bring tape, a stapler and permanent marker.

Abbott has also taught at Crane Country day School.

Warriors hold their own but fall short to the Pirates

PHOTOS BY ROSANA SWING The Carpinteria High School football team took their game on the road against north-county rival Santa Ynez in the annual Warrior Spirit-Pirate Pride Game. For the second week in a row, Carpinteria allowed their opponent a two-touchdown lead. Unfortunately, against the Pirates the Warriors fell by a score of 14-7. The loss drops Carpinteria to 1-1 on the season, as the school suffers their fourth loss in a row to Santa Ynez.

The Pirates got an early jump on the Warriors, as Matt Cohen ran the opening kickoff just shy of midfield. The home team worked their way down to the one-yard line, where Timothy Fisher took the ball in for a 7-0 lead with 8:41 left in the opening quarter. Poor field position forced Carpinteria to punt, giving Santa Ynez a first down at the Warrior 46. The Pirates’ short drive brought the ball inside the Carpinteria 38, and Juan Sanchez found Jasper Kadlec for a 47-yard scoring play, and a 14-0 lead with 2:36 remaining in the quarter.

But the Warriors came charging back when Vance Keiser connected with Brady Sturdivan for a 33-yard scoring pass to cut the lead in half, with a little over a minute left till the break. Keiser completed seven of 21 passes on the night for 120 yards and a touchdown. Isaac De Alba ran for ten yards on nine carries,

Carpinteria missed two field goals in the third quarter and second-year coach Rick Candaele said of his team’s inability to punch it in the end zone, “We’re still working on our offensive line, none of them have played except for these two games.” The Warriors mounted a final drive, but when Keiser’s toss to Sturdivan fell incomplete, Santa Ynez secured the victory. Sanchez was named the game’s MVP with Kadlec receiving the Pirate Pride Trophy. Chris Ramirez with a fumble recovery and an interception, took home the Warrior Spirit Award.

“After two games, I think it’s obvious, that our team will battle, they will compete; they kind of showed how much they care by the way they play,” said Warriors coach Rick Candaele. Carpinteria will face Capistrano Valley Christian at 7 p.m. at Valley Memorial Stadium on Friday, Aug. 31, in the team’s first-of-four consecutive home games with a kickoff at 7 p.m.

Carpinteria High School

The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team started the year by defeating Lompoc in a non-league match, 15-3 on Aug. 28. In singles, Josie Gordon collected a sweep and did not lose a game in her last two sets, and Vicky Delk and Sydney Endow each went 2-1. In doubles, Amy Perez/Karla Marin and Vivi Torres/Jessica Santillan each had sweeps, and Jeannette Carrillo/Lexi Persoon went 2-1. “The score might have been lopsided, but the sets were actually very close,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. “We seemed to do a lot of things right especially in the first round where we pulled away in many of the close sets to go up 6-0,” added Bryant. The Warriors are now 1-0 overall.

Cate School

The Cate Girls’ tennis team played at Rio Mesa High School Friday, Aug. 24, emerging victorious with an 11-7 final score. During the match, all 13 active members of the Cate roster saw action.

The singles lineup was led by junior Grace Fuss, who battled fiercely with the higher-ranked Jupneet Singh of Rio Mesa, before going on to win her other two sets on the day. Freshman Aminah Hill also impressed in her team debut, winning two sets as well. Senior Sydney Burton added a win in two sets of play before being substituted in the final round. In doubles, Cate counted on the experience of two-time Tri-Valley League Doubles Runner-Up Sarah Polowczak, who paired with standout sophomore Fritze Mayer for two convincing victories. The pair were substituted in the third round of play, yielding the court to Mia Foster and Tali Nam, who picked up a nice 7-5 victory. Seniors Kate Tunnell and Jennifer Soh also came out strong in their season debut, winning their first two sets, before dropping a closely contested set with the Rio Mesa number one team in the third round. Sophomore Yuki Kobayashi paired with two partners on the day, earning a win in the final round with junior Piper Brooks. Cate plays next week on Thursday, Aug. 30, at home against Santa Barbara High School.

Dave and Maureen Soto, who both live and work at Cate School, visited Prague Castle in the Czech Republic near the end of their 12-day tour this summer, which took them to Warsaw, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna and Prague. Covering an area of nearly 750,000 square feet, the castle is the biggest ancient castle in the world.

Work first began on Prague Castle in the year 870.

Chasing dreams with CVN

Curtis Studio of Dance student, Sierra Skye Nordholm, returned from a month of intensive dance training in New York City with “dance moms” Ashley Nordholm and Leslie Murphy. The Coastal View News made its Times Square debut as well.

Sierra is aggressively pursuing a career in dance and according to her instructors, “with one year of high school left, she is on the right track!”
