CMS teacher wins Distinguished Mentors award This year’s “A Salute to Teachers” gala will honor Marith Parton, a Carpinteria Middle School teacher. Carpinteria-native Parton is among three county-wide teachers who were peer-nominated and selected by committee as 2019 Distinguished Mentors.

Parton took part in the Santa Barbara County Education Office (SBCEO) Teacher Induction Program.

The induction program pairs new teachers with experienced mentors to help support their first two years in the profession.

Currently in her sixth-year teaching, Parton is an eighth grade English teacher.

Growing up in Carpinteria, she said she had many “amazing teachers” and always knew that she too wanted to be a teacher.

“I had Miss Ota in kindergarten, and ever since then, I was hooked on school,” said Parton. “I decided to major in English education because I felt I could teach so many different subjects through teaching English. I really love teaching at the middle school because we have such amazing students, and I have a great staff that supports me every day.”

When Parton completed the mentor

program as a new teacher, she knew she wanted to mentor to give back to the profession. “I was able to mentor for the past two years, and I will continue to mentor this year,” said Parton. “I am humbled and honored by this award because I know there are so many incredible mentors everywhere, and I am grateful for the opportunity to show my love for our profession.” “’A Salute to Teachers’ is a wonderful way to honor our outstanding local educators who inspire young minds each day and who model professional excellence,” said County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Salcido.

At the gala, SBCEO will also honor three Distinguished New Educators, the 2020 Santa Barbara County Teacher of the Year and the 2020 Santa Barbara Bowl Performing Arts Teacher of the Year. “A Salute to Teachers,” sponsored by the Santa Barbara County Education Office (SBCEO) and Cox Communications, will be held on Nov. 2 at the Music Academy of the West.

Capps enters race for county supervisor

On Aug. 27, Santa Barbara School Board Member Laura Capps, Democrat, announced her candidacy for First District Supervisor, which represents the Carpinteria Valley.

Capps will be running against incumbent Das Williams, a Carpinteria-based Democrat.

Capps describes her prior work as “providing opportunities for working families, fighting for immigration reform, forging a more environmentally sustainable future and supporting the rights of all people.” In addition to the Santa Barbara School Board, Capps has held leadership positions on the Community Environmental Council, the Parenthood Action Fund, the Interfaith Initiative, the Santa Barbara County Women’s Commission, No Kid Hungry and Ocean Conservancy.

Capps’ political experience includes serving as a speechwriter for President Bill MANJARI SHARMA Clinton, communications director for Senator Ted Kennedy and a senior aide to 2004 Laura Capps has announced Democratic presidential candidate John her candidacy for First District Kerry.

City Council votes for clean energy: community choice aggregate approved

Carpinteria’s City Council voted unanimously to move forward with joining a community choice aggregate (CCA) at its Aug. 26 meeting. The 4-0 vote (with Councilman Al Clark absent) directed staff to move forward in preparing a city contract to join the CCA of the Monterey Bay Community Power Authority (MBCP) with a budget appropriation of $7,500.

City staff were first directed to study the feasibility of joining a CCA in 2015. Erin Maker, the city’s environmental coordinator, explained to the council that CCAs offer consumers more local choices and promote economic development. Staff have also determined that joining MBCP provides “the least cost, lowest risk path forward.”

CCAs allow local governments to form a partnership to combine the amount of electricity used by their communities to both purchase energy and develop renewable energy projects. The partnership typically supplies a higher percentage of renewable or carbon-free electricity at competitive rates. The investor-owned utility, in this case Southern California Edison, handles the delivery of energy by maintaining transmission lines and the overall energy grid. Consumers can opt-out of the CCA and use only SCE. MBCP launched in early 2018, initially serving the counties

Speaking on behalf of the Community Environmental Council, Michael Chiacos stated, “We’ve studied community choice extensively … we urge Carpinteria to move forward… CCEs are now serving 10 million Californians … Carpinterians deserve the choice… of cleaner energy.”

Wildfire mitigation plan

Rondi Gutheree of Southern California Edison provided council with an overview of the company’s wildfire mitigation plan recently filed with the State of California. Earlier this year, SB 901 required all utility companies to create a wildfire mitigation plan to reduce wildfire threats and to fortify the powerlines and equipment. Gutheree stated that the purpose of the plan was to minimize the chances of SCE equipment becoming a fire hazard.

Disability advocate, Danielle Anderson, executive director of Independent Living Resource Center for the Tri-County Region, warned the public that if the wildfire mitigation plan, which includes emergency power shutoffs, “isn’t done correctly, people with disabilities will die.” Anderson said that she had reached out several times to SCE asking, “how this power shut off plan would affect people with disabilities?” and has not received a response.

Councilmembers also approved a $69,885 increase in funds to remodel City Hall due to unforeseen building conditions discovered during the demolition phase of the project. The costs of the project and construction management services of GWMC will be covered by the city’s insurance claim.

Magnolias to be removed

Two magnolias at 4495 La Tierra Lane will be removed and replaced per the Tree Advisory Board’s recommendations and the council’s approval. The trees were stricken by a pest infestation and were affecting the safety of pedestrians on the sidewalk. Trees will be planted immediately after the originals are removed. The city contracts with West Coast Arborists for tree replacement and removal.

Motorcycle parking

City Council also approved eliminating one on-street parking spot and in its place installing two motorcycle parking spots and red curb near the existing crosswalk at 5205 Carpinteria Avenue (near Fosters Freeze). The modifications will improve visibility for drivers, providing a safer crossing zone for students.

Calling Williams out on cannabis

I disagree with Lee Heller’s support of Supervisor Williams, expressed in her letter “Cannabis” (Vol. 25, No. 47). I don’t believe Williams shows much desire to help his constituents over the cannabis industry.

He rejected Planning Commission recommendations to verify affidavits permitting cultivators to get state licenses before county ordinances could be enforced. This suggests he wanted the cannabis industry to gain as much momentum as possible. Why would a supervisor whose job it would be to enforce those ordinances want to allow so many in the pipeline? I think the answer is so he could show later that he was restricting some while plenty of others would still go through. He would then seem to control things when in fact he is the one who allowed the momentum that inevitably would allow a large number to go through.

The LA Times supports this theory.

Williams apparently gave reassurances to

those in the cannabis industry that they didn’t have “anything to worry about.”

Other articles suggest that in exchange, he received considerable financial support.

So, it is not surprising that Ms. Heller, a key supporter, would say that he is working hard to remediate the impact.

I also disagree that tax benefits will be large. Oregon and Colorado cannabis gluts have forced them to destroy crops.

How does that generate promised income? So, our community smells like a skunk with big questions about revenue.

Ms. Heller suggests that the county needs income because the county had a deficit.

But that deficit did not materialize. Scare tactics are unacceptable.

Finally, I object to Ms. Heller’s claim that the state is going to take charge if we don’t. But Proposition 64 shows that local authorities are completely in charge of all the rules. Again, a scare tactic.

Many of us in wonderful Carpinteria Valley are upset our elected officials don’t protect us. It doesn’t help when news organizations promulgate falsehood.

William Ripley Nichols 7/10/1945 – 8/1/2019

William “Billy” Ripley Nichols was born in San Francisco and moved to Mon-

tecito as a child. Eventually, the family settled in Carpinteria.

Billy was an accomplished student and became the senior class president of Carpinteria High School in 1963.

In 1982, he met his beautiful wife, Diane Nichols. They resided in Carpinteria until they retired to their vacation home in Kernville, California. Billy is known throughout both communities for his “jokester” personality.

A wonderful companion, amazing father and the absolute best grandfather in the world, Billy is survived by his wife, Diane; his daughters, Lacey True Purcell and Uma Friedland; his nephews, Nathan Dowdall and Evan and Clifton Jones; his nieces, Samantha Green Dowdall, Nancy Dowdall and Siobhan Dowdall; and his grandchildren, Savannah Newton and Taylor Lenci.

Services will be held at Carpinteria Public Cemetery on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. Potluck appetizers at the gazebo following the services. BYOB.

Potentially deadly allergy puts one student at particular risk

A student in the Carpinteria Children’s Project pre-school program on the Canalino Elementary School campus has a severe peanut allergy that puts the student at great risk if exposed to peanuts or products that have been made or mixed with peanuts. Canalino keeps a data base in the district’s “Aeries” system of allergies that students may have, and the preschooler’s mother and father asked CVN if a notice could run in the paper as peanut shells—possibly from someone in the neighborhood surrounding Canalino School feeding birds—have been found in the preschool yard on the

first two days of the school year.

The young child must always have an EpiPen nearby in case of an allergic reaction that could put the child into anaphylactic shock. The student’s mother wrote, “The concern is a child picks up the peanut shell and puts it in his or her mouth or has it on his or her hands, and then puts them in his or her mouth, which could trigger a reaction.

It’s unfortunate, but people need to be educated that this is a real risk for not only children, but adults with this allergy.”

Rosalva Cardona, age 53, passed away at her home the morning of Aug. 21, 2019.

She was accompanied by her loving husband and two caring children by her side.

She was a strong woman, wife, mother and friend who never backed down and always moved forward. Sadly, her battle with cancer was too much for her to fight off, and she is now peacefully resting in 84-4428heaven.

James Sly Chef and “Capitán”

They could be sighted on bike rides in Carpinteria, wearing headsets so they could talk with each other.

At the bottom of every menu, he credited “James Sly & Brigade.” He believed in sharing the credit as much as he loved to share his knowledge and expertise with his staff, many of whom stayed with him for years. They called him “Capitán,” an honor higher than “Chef,” as James Sly taught them not only how to cook, but how to live.

A memorial is Friday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m., at Carpinteria Cemetery, followed by a celebration of his life at noon at the Carpinteria Arts Center. In lieu of flowers, please donate in his memory to Planned Parenthood, Serenity House, Carpinteria Arts Center, or Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

James Sly passed away at Serenity House on Aug. 23, 2019, following a brief illness, with Annie, his wife of 33 years, by his side. He is also survived by his sister Catherine Aiken, and nieces and nephews Casey, Brian, Adam, Stefanie and Josh.

Born and raised in Fullerton, California, he held a B.A. in Linguistics from California State University Fullerton. He Thursday, August 31, 2017  7 first cooked at Boy Scout campouts (and was proud of baking pineapple upsidedown cake on a campfire) and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout.

He worked at restaurant chains, then began an apprenticeship at Chez Cary, an “old school” haute cuisine restaurant in Orange County, where he met fellow apprentice Michael Hutchings. The chefs have remained colleagues and friends for more than 45 years.

James began his formal training at the Hotel Ritz in Paris, Hotel de Paris in Maria del Carmen Monte Carlo, and with Michel Guerard (Albarrán) Swalgen at Regine’s in both Paris and New York.

She spent part of 1998 as the Categorical Program Advisor for Hart Street Elementary in Canoga Park, before moving to the Oxnard Union School District in later that year. In Oxnard, she began as a fourth/fifth dual class teacher at Norman R. Brekke Elementary School, then served as Learning Director at Sierra Linda Elementary (1999-2002) and Fremont Intermediate School (2002-2005). In 2004, she had a temporary assignment to the OSD District Office as the Interim Manager of Categorical Programs before returning to Fremont. She then became the Interim Principal for Marina West Elementary (2005-2006), before accepting a principal position with the El Rio school district.

Just before settling into her new position in El Rio, her mom (then 91, and living with Carmen and Stuart since 1994) had some minor falls. Carmen decided to leave her career in education to stay home and take care of her mother. Carmen continued to provide loving care for her mom until she passed to heaven last year, at the age of 103 years. It was Carmen’s loving care, along with her husband’s, that helped her mom live such a long and happy life.

Carmen leaves behind her beloved husband of 32 years, Stuart Swalgen; siblings, Juan Albarrán, Maria A. Rey (Rubén) and Santos Albarrán (Eyvette); nieces and nephews, Juan Albarrán II (Gretchen), Sergio Albarrán (Wanda), Adriana Rey-Dovgin, Alejandra Albarrán Moses (Ken), Alfonso Albarrán, Santos Albarrán II, Carlo Rey, Alicia Cantrell (Dustin), Alina Rey Keswani (Max) and Isabella Albarrán; seven grandnieces and grandnephews, Leticia, Mateo, Natalia, Sofia, Nicolas, Mila and Robin; as well as family in Mexico City, a sister, Angelina Retana (Miguel) and five nieces, Magdalena, Cecilia, Claudia, Cristina and Gabriela; nephew, Miguel; and many cousins. And of course, her beloved dogs, Nova and Cindy. Carmen was preceded in death by her parents, Santos (1987) and Juana Albarrán (2018).

Proud of her Mexican heritage, culture and of her Spanish language, Carmen had a strong sense of self and self-esteem.

Though from humble beginnings, she saw her journey through life as adding to who she was, not limited to any single set of circumstances. Carmen was strong, fearless and interested in many things. Above all, Carmen was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, doggy-mom, special friend and more to her family and friends. Our hearts ache terribly with sadness at losing her. We are blessed by her caring influence and it is her selfless love that will guide us to strive to be more compassionate beings. Carmen now rests with God. He got a good one!

The Rosary Service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019, at 7p.m., at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 25 N Las Posas Road, Camarillo, California.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m. also at St. Mary Magdalene Church, followed immediately by the graveside and reception at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, Funeral Home and Crematory, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo, California.

Parent affected by suicide says “focus on the life and not the death”

HopeNet to host Candle Light Vigil for suicide prevention and survivors

By DeBra Herrick A candlelight vigil will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 10, for World Suicide Prevention Day. HopeNet of Carpinteria hosts the yearly remembrance in honor and memory of those who have committed suicide and their survivors. CVN spoke with Emiliano Campobello, who will speak at the vigil, to learn more about its significance in the community.

Campobello lost his son Nino to suicide in April 2017. He currently resides in Santa Barbara where he works as a custom fine artist.

CVN: Tell me about where you and Nino’s story of struggle begins.

EmiliaNo CampobEllo: I grew up in Santa Barbara, grade school through university. I went to Europe to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. I met a Dutch woman and I moved to Holland.

I lived with her there for 11 years and we had three children. But at a certain point the relationship fell apart and I moved back to the US. 2:33 p.m. / Public Intoxication / 1100 block Casitas Pass Road

Deputies were dispatched to assist the Fire Protection District with a fall victim at a local business. An intoxicated female was transported to the hospital and an intoxicated male who would not identify himself was in the area and was eventually arrested for public intoxication and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

A caller’s vehicle was stolen from the carport sometime between 11 p.m. and first light. CHP attempted to stop the vehicle in the Jalama Beach area during the evening hours. The vehicle evaded CHP by driving over 100 mph and CHP terminated the pursuit.

Carpinteria Code Enforcement Officers reported an intoxicated subject in front of a breakfast restaurant. Deputies contacted a woman who was ultimately arrested for public intoxication. During a search incident to the arrest, she was found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

The woman was booked in Santa Barbara County Jail.

Deputies were dispatched to the beach on a report of about 20 naked people sitting along the beach. The Park Ranger gave deputies a ride down to the beach on his 4x4 truck. The males put clothing on as soon as they saw the truck driving towards them on the beach. The nude sunbathers are affiliated with a club. The Park Ranger said that they have been receiving complaints of nude people on the beach for the past three weeks.

Firefighters and paramedics responded to a man passed out in his car. He was not having a medical emergency; he was intoxicated. The 37-year-old resident of National City refused to answer deputies’ questions. He was intoxicated to the point that he could not care for his own safety, and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Girls Scouts enjoy success in opening fundraiser effort

Carpinteria Girl Scout Troop 50006 recently held a rummage and bake sale on the Carpinteria Middle School front lawn to earn money for a service trip the troop will make to Costa Rica in 2021. The girls plan to participate in reforestation efforts with tree planting work. Community members came out in support of their local Girl Scouts to the tune of $1100, and troop leader Kristina Calkins said, “We started out in the early morning by giving each girl a stack of money to hold for change and telling them that they are the businesswoman in charge…” Calkins added, “The girls were empowered all day as the Carpinteria community came out in record numbers to support the young ladies.” Troop 50006 will continue to raise funds over the next couple of years, and has plans for another rummage sale at the beginning of next summer.

Avofest unveils 2019 poster design A stunning graphic design by Carpinteria-native Lori Shaw-Kunz has been selected as this year’s California Avocado Festival poster. Shaw-Kunz hoped to capture the essence of her childhood growing up in Carpinteria in her brightly colored design. She was thinking of those “sunny summers” when she would “pick avocados and make avocado toast before that was a thing.” For a time, she even lived on an avocado ranch off Foothill Road.

After graduating from Carpinteria High School, Shaw-Kunz established herself in the apparel industry as a textile designer and T-shirt graphics designer. In recent years, she has designed products for Disney, Warner Brothers and Big Dog Sportswear. Now, Shaw-Kunz’ design will don the backs of hundreds to thousands of avocado lovers as they celebrate the valley’s most famous fruit at the 33rd annual Avofest.

Nature-themed exhibit to open at Palm Loft Gallery

Palm Loft Gallery opens its new exhibit, “Close to Nature,” on Saturday, Aug. 31. The show’s title references a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke: “If you will stay close to nature, to its simplicity, to the small things hardly noticeable, those things can unexpectedly become great and immeasurable.”

“Close to Nature” features paintings by gallery director and owner Arturo Tello.

Tello has been painting the Carpinteria Bluffs for nearly 40 years. Additionally, the show will feature paintings by Oak Group members, Chris Chapman, Michael Drury, Whitney Brooks Hansen, John Iwerks, William Mitchell, Ann Sanders, Rick Schloss and Skip Smith.

pany, renting half of his iPhone repair store to offer computer repair. “Over the next year, I spent time learning new repairs and expanding my skill set,” Henri said. “The business grew and started to make a profit.” He’s since expanded his list of services to include phones, tablets and a variety of on-site services and training sessions. Luckily, expansion also led to Ducky Repair & Recovery in Carpinteria.

Being a repair shop can mean all sorts of things, so what makes Dukky stand out? “Many things set us apart from other repair shops, yet I feel the most important one is our customer service,” Henri said. He explained that listening to the customer’s needs to find a solution is number one and he’s quick to admit that honesty is also the key to their success.

A beautiful day for the arts

Bellas Artes program celebrates Aztec-inspired art show Photos by Debra herrick The new Bellas Artes exhibit, “Images of Teotihuacan,” opened in the Charles Lobue Gallery at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center, with a family-friendly celebration on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 25. Artists, their families and supporters of the program enjoyed homemade traditional Mexican food and performances by Aztec dancers and Son Jarocho musicians. Bellas Artes offers cultural arts education to residents of all ages at Chapel Court, Dahlia Court and Casas de Las Flores and is co-sponsored by the Arts Center and Peoples’ Self-Help Housing.

The exhibit features clay sculptures and paintings inspired by Mexico’s meso-American city Teotihuacan. Earthy reds and yellows dominate the color palette, referencing natural elements found in Mexico’s Central Valley.

ALENA STEEN Where I live in the mountains just outside town, the early mornings are chilly lately, with a cool and dry wind blowing down the canyon—a sure sign that fall is on its way no matter the recent sunshine.

In the agricultural calendar, fall is a time to reap the abundant harvests of spring’s hard work and summer’s care.

Bountiful late season tomatoes, neverending summer squash, and fat green and purple runner beans overflow from beds at the Carpinteria Garden Park. shorter days are a signal for many plants to finish their seasonal life cycle, setting seed in the form of fruits and vegetables, the vessels for next season’s garden. once summer’s bounty has reached its peak, begin planning for a fall and winter veggie garden. Despite the cooler temperatures and shorter days, it is still easy to grow fresh vegetables year-round. even a tiny space, such as a single raised bed, or a few large pots on a sunny porch or step, can produce a surprising amount of food with a little planning.

Growing a portion of your household’s produce is an empowering way to connect to seasonal cycles, as well as a source of constant joy and surprise.

You’ll observe and connect to the otherthan-human world. With a little effort, you can grow enough greens for fresh salad a few times a week, or medicinal herbs for daily teas, or culinary herbs to season every meal.

Nourish your soil

the most important step for any garden, no matter the size, is to build soil fertility. as a backyard farmer, think of yourself first as a soil architect, creating healthy, living soil that will feed the

Sugar snap peas love the cooler weather and won’t take up much space in a small garden if they are trellised vertically. The vegetable that any kid will eat! plants that feed you. a spoonful of rich garden soil is filled with millions of microorganisms whose life cycles create soil through waste and decay rich in organic matter. adding a two-inch layer of organic compost or worm compost to garden soil between crops is the best way to feed soil-building microorganisms. to apply, spread a generous portion of compost onto bare soil, gently working into the top few inches of soil with your hands or favorite hand tool. once garden soil is ready, it is time to plant. Cool season crops such as lettuce, arugula, endive, parsley, cilantro, beets, carrots, turnips, radishes, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, Swiss chard, Brussels sprouts, and onions thrive this time of year. Many of these vegetables can easily be started from seed in garden soil, or bought as transplants from nurseries for a head start. Consider seeding salad greens or root crops every three weeks for succession planting for continuous harvests.

Fall is the time for planting perennials in your garden, such as fruit trees and native California plants. time fall plantings for late november to take advantage of (hopefully!) another rainy winter. Bare root fruit trees, the most affordable choice for home-scale production, will soon be available for pre-order from nurseries such as Peaceful Valley Farm (groworganic.com) and Bay laurel nursery (baylaurelnursery.com). Make sure to look for “low chill” fruit trees for greatest success along the coast.

Including a few California native plants in your garden for local birds and pollinators is a beautiful way to expand your garden’s offerings. Consider plants such as any of our native sages (white, black, purple, hummingbird) or California buckwheat, which supply almost year-round habitat and food if watered infrequently through next summer. another local favorite is narrow leaf milkweed (not the tropical species that are often available at nurseries), the primary food source for endangered monarch caterpillars and butterflies.

Lettuce is a cool season crop that grows easily from seed. Plant seeds five inches apart for head lettuce, or densely together for cutting greens: you can harvest the top half of lettuce plants once they are about six inches tall and they will regrow from the center for future salads.

a gardening course titled “Victory Vegetable Gardens for true Beginners,” taught by the Master Gardeners of santa Barbara County, will be held over four sessions in september and october at the Carpinteria Garden Park. Focusing on building healthy soil, plant selection, propagation, care and pest and disease management, the class will culminate in a Certificate of Completion from the uC Master Gardener Program for participants who complete all four classes. the cost is $35 for materials, and pre-registration is required by sept. 15.

In WWI and WWII, the united states government encouraged its citizens to grow “Victory Gardens” to offset the cost of food production for civilian consumption in support of the war effort. similar programs were implemented in england, Canada and australia. In the present day, a thriving home garden can lower monthly food bills if it is carefully implemented and comes with positive health effects. also, any food eaten from a home garden is food that is not transported with fossil fuel.

United Boys & Girls Club has new leadership in Carpinteria athletics

This past spring, Tony DeFelicis signed on to the United Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara County’s Carpinteria Unit as the new assistant club director in charge of athletic programs.

Having worked for the city of Burbank’s Parks and Recreation Department, DeFelicis has a strong coaching background and jumped right in mid-season to the club’s indoor soccer program. To bolster the program, DeFelicis partnered with Carpinteria High School. State and regional school soccer players worked as coaching staff, learning mentoring and teaching skills, along with earning community service hours.

CHS Class of ’18 alum, Gabriel Barajas, who was named MVP at the 2018 CIF-Southern Section Division Six Soccer championships, helped recruit fellow Warriors soccer players to serve as coaches. Standout coaches include,

In an exciting turn of events, the kids prevailed in overtime. “It was really awesome,” said DeFelicis, “you know I’m new here, getting to know the parents… there were a few parents on the fence, but now they’re coming for flag football and certainly a

On your mark! Carpinteria’s landmark Franklin Trail is the spectacular setting for the fourth annual Island View Trail Race hosted by Santa Barbara County Trails Council on Sunday, Sept. 15. Runners and walkers are invited to join in 4-mile, 10-mile or 16-mile races heading out and back on this popular front-country course that offers breathtaking views of the Channel Islands.

“We’ve had great participation in the first three years of this race on one of the area’s newest trails, making this one of the premier running events in the area,” said Nancy Kaplan, race director. “Franklin Trail was hit hard by the Thomas Fire and it’s remarkable how well it has recovered. It is a testament to what trail crews can accomplish with strong community support.”

This is the second year of the 16-mile race (3,780 feet elevation gain), which allows participants to climb through chaparral-lined switchbacks to breathtaking views while getting the full experience of the longest trail in Santa Barbara’s front country. Over 150 participants are expected in the three races, raising funds to ensure that trails remain open to the public.

Race proceeds benefit the Thomas Fire Trail Fund, which is managed by the Los Padres Forest Association, The C.R.E.W., Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers and Trails Council. Currently, Trails Council and many community partners are restoring the upper stretches of Franklin Trail from damages sustained in the fire. Eventually, the trail will be connected over the crest of Santa Ynez Mountains and into the backcountry.

FFA students had a great show at the Ventura County Fair.

FFA looks ahead

In a letter to CVN, Carpinteria High School FFA Club reporter Adam Lent said: “As the 2019 Ventura County Fair closes its doors, the students at our local FFA say goodbye to their animal projects until next year. The FFA students and advisors were proud with how well they did, bringing in many ribbons for Carpinteria’s FFA for all animal groups. The students are now prepared for their next adventure with their next animal projects.” The CHS FFA program expects to have 150 students participating in the 19-20 school year.

CVN rocks Red Rocks

Marcus Hutchinson and Catalina Maldonado took a road trip to Denver, Colorado, and stopped at the Red Rocks Amphitheater with a copy of Coastal View News. The Red Rocks Amphitheater has hosted performances for over 100 years, and has been the venue for many notable concerts including the Beatles in 1964, Jimi Hendrix in 1968, numerous Grateful Dead shows and U2 during their “War” and “Under a Blood Red Sky” tours.

The first day of school comes with a heady mix of emotions. Students are excited to see favorite classmates once again, while perhaps feeling a bit apprehensive to meet new teachers and face the challenges of the next grade. For parents, the day marks an inexorable step towards their children’s future independence with all the attending hopes and fears for what life may hold.

Teachers, staff and administrators cast a longing look back to their all-too-brief days of summer, even if by day-one they have already been at work for a week or more.

Learning forms the core of the Carpinteria school community—both the hard facts of math, science and grammar, as well as the more delicate process of coming to understand one’s self and others. CVN wishes all students—those in school and in the school of life—much luck and success in the year ahead.

The Alcazar Theatre will host the second annual free Pajama Rama Bedtime Stories on Sunday, Sept. 8, at noon, with local author Hal Price and artist Michael Bayouth, who are launching their newest book, “The Bear Essentials.” Next in the Eli Benjamin Bear series, the book takes a chapter from “The Adventures of Eli Benjamin Bear” and expands the letter that Eli’s father wrote him before Eli had to stay in the hospital for his underdeveloped heart. It’s meant to inspire children to remain true to their hearts. “The Bear Essentials” is 32-pages with full-color illustrations.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation.

Children are invited to bring their parents, grandparents and teddy bears to the Alcazar Theatre—pajama attire is encouraged. The Pajama Rama falls on both National Teddy Bear Day and National Grandparents Day, as well as the beginning of National Pediatric Cancer Month and National Literacy Month.

“My vision was always that grandkids would invite their grandparents to put on their pajamas and their bathrobes and their bathroom slippers, and they would walk in hand-in-hand holding their bears and their blankets into the Alcazar Theatre,” Price said.

An open call for “Teddy Bear Story”

entries will be held in conjunction with the Carpinteria Arts Center ’s Arts and Crafts Faire on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Story entries are to be dropped off to the Charles LoBue gallery front desk, Thursday thru Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Selected entries will be featured and read during the Pajama Rama Bedtime Stories event on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Alcazar Theater. Kids are invited to bring their teddies to the faire and draw and write a story about their bears. The top five stories written at the event will be chosen for the Pajama Rama, and the children will be invited read their winning entries at the event.
