Local 14 and under kids enjoyed a fun day of low-pressure competition while showcasing their skills. The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Culinary Crawl…a Taste of Carpinteria will be held on Friday, Sept.

Candidates gear up as election filing period closes CVN RepoRt

After an extension of five days, the candidate filing period closed at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, for the Carpinteria Unified School District School Board, Carpinteria Valley Water Board and the CarpinteriaSummerland Fire Protection District.

At press time, Sally Green and Andy Schaeffer of Carpinteria and Jamie Bray of Summerland were the three candidates for three open seats on the CUSD School Board. If no further applications were received before the deadline, candidates will be appointed trustees without an election.

Only two individuals, Matthew T. Roberts and Shirley Johnson had filed candidacy for one of the three open seats of the Carpinteria Valley Water Board.

If no one else filed by closing time, an

appointment will be made by the Carpinteria Valley Water District for the third open seat. Similarly, at press time, the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Board had only two candidates for three positions, Richard Denbow and John Nicoli.

On the other hand, the Carpinteria Sanitary District closed its filing period with no extension. For the short term position, Debbie Murphy will take the single open seat uncontested; and for the full term posts, incumbents Lin Graf and Mike Modugno will retain their seats.

In city matters, Carpinteria City Council closed its filing period on Friday, Aug. 10, with five candidates set to run for three open seats. Candidates for City Council on the November ballot are incumbents Gregg A. Carty, Al Clark and J. Bradley Stein, and challengers Roy Lee and Darwin “Dar” Ringling.

Fire District sues SCE for Thomas Fire damages CVN RepoRt

On July 5, Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District filed suit against Southern California Edison for damages sustained in the Thomas Fire that started on Dec. 4, 2017, and the subsequent debris flow of Jan. 5, 2018.

The Fire District’s complaint asserts that the Thomas Fire was caused by SCE’s negligent and improper operation of power lines and related equipment,

and SCE’s failure to properly maintain vegetation in accordance with California regulations and law.

“The Fire District stands with its community, seeking recovery of taxpayer resources. These firefighters deserve to be reimbursed for their losses so they can continue to focus on fighting fires and saving lives,” stated John Fiske with Baron & Budd, P.C., who is representing the Fire District in this litigation.

St. Joseph Conference plans 5K Walk/Run

The St. Joseph Conference, Carpinteria, of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul will host a 5K Walk/Run for Saturday, Sept. 22, as part of the National Society’s eighth annual Friends of the Poor Charity Walk event. Check-in and last minute registration will begin at 7 a.m. at St. Joseph Field, 1532 Linden Ave. The first runners will start at 8 a.m.

The route will go from St. Joseph Field through downtown Carpinteria to the State Beach, loop around Tomol Park footpath to the boardwalk, and then return to St. Joseph Field.

The one-year-old St Joseph Conference is actively involved in helping the needy and the disadvantaged in the Carpinteria area, without regard to age, gender, race, nationality or ethnic background.

“The only requirement to receive our help,” said Conference President Susanna Green, “is the person in need must be a resident of the Carpinteria/Summerland/La Conchita area, because 100 percent of all donations to our conference

are used to help our fellow Carpinteriaarea friends.” Green continued, “During the weeks after the Thomas Fire and Montecito Flood, we were able to help find shelter, provide clothing, help with utility bills, help pay rent, help provide food and even help pay the medical bills of an injured firefighter.”

Last year, the National Friends of the Poor Walk successfully raised more than $3 million. With no overhead or administrative costs, every penny raised last year remained in the donating community for the benefit of the needy in that community.

The St. Joseph Conference is actively recruiting walkers and runners, as well as volunteers to help coordinate the walk.

Donations are also accepted. There is no registration fee, but walkers are encouraged to collect at least $50 in donations.

Recycled water project gets the green light

The Carpinteria Valley Water District (CVWD) and its partners, the Carpinteria Sanitary District (CSD) and the City of Carpinteria, are embarking on the next important step in advancement of its Recycled Water Project with the Board’s July 25 approval of the funding plan for the project’s California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) analysis, preliminary design and outreach work.

Santa Barbara County remains in a “Severe Drought” according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, and recent years have shown us that our existing water supplies will not provide a reliable water supply during extended periods of drought. The Recycled Water Project will establish a locally controlled water supply, which could be available for Carpinteria in as little as five years.

The project consists of the development of an Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) that will purify CSD effluent to better than drinking water standards. This purification process makes use of microfiltration, reverse osmosis and advanced oxidation. Injection wells will be used to store the treated water in the Carpinteria Groundwater Basin for later use. This reclamation technology, known as Indirect Potable Reuse (IPR), is being used throughout California including in Southern California, where the Orange County Water District’s Groundwater Replenishment System has produced 250 billion gallons of water through their IPR facility.

CVWD, CSD and the City first examined the feasibility of this project in a report prepared by RMC consultants (now Woodard & Curran) in 2016. The analysis determined that advanced water treatment at the CSD treatment plant and injection of the purified water into the Carpinteria Groundwater Basin was the best option for the Carpinteria Valley. The Board’s July action now allows for Woodard & Curran to move to the next stage, conducting environmental analyses and preparing preliminary design—both important steps to not only provide additional project detail but also position the project for funding which will help minimizing costs to ratepayers.

Recycled water produced through this project is anticipated to supplement the natural recharge of groundwater with an additional 1,100 acre-feet per year. That’s enough water to serve more than 4,000 households for a year. CVWD has been carefully monitoring groundwater levels and quality over the last two decades and has seen the water levels decline during the drought.

The Carpinteria Groundwater Basin Annual Report, prepared by Pueblo Water Resources, estimates that public and private pumping combined extracts an average of 3,900 acre-feet of water from the basin each year. However, during 2015 and 2016, when Lake Cachuma reached historic lows, groundwater pumping was estimated to be over 6,000 acre-feet per year.

In recent years, our region has not received sufficient rainfall to recharge the basin, so we’re collectively taking out more than nature can replenish. This new sustainable water source will help stop that trend by augmenting natural groundwater supplies, and will provide a buffer against seawater intrusion, which is a threat to all coastal communities.

Over the next two years, development of the Recycled Water Project will consist of the CEQA analysis, conceptual and preliminary design work, and permitting. Finalizing the design and going through the bidding process will take an additional year. Once contracts are secured, the construction is expected to take place over a one to two-year period.

In the meantime, CVWD is working along with local stakeholders to comply with the requirements of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) which is working to ensure careful management of our groundwater resources.

Careful management of our water supplies and continued conservation from our customers has helped to sustain the Carpinteria Valley through the drought and we appreciate your continued efforts. Tentative locations have been identified as potential injection well sites for the Carpinteria project near Linden Avenue north of highway 101, where a pipeline will be constructed to carry the treated water from CSD.

Dorothy C. Campbell 1922 – 2018

Dorothy Campbell passed away peacefully July 20, 2018 at her home in Carpinteria, California. Dorothy was born in 1922 to Victor and Ella Conquest and raised on the south side of Chicago. She went to Iowa State University, majoring in journalism and home economics, graduating in 1943. At the university, she met Foster, who she married and who became her life-long partner.

In the midst of WWII, with Fos away in the South Pacific working as a radar operator on an aircraft carrier, Dorothy went to New York City. She had no money and stayed at the YWCA, but she found a job in journalism. This self-confidence and can-do spirit was a life-long characteristic.

After the war ended, Fos and Dorothy moved west from Cambridge, Massachusetts to Pasadena, where Fos worked in the emerging electronics industry, and eventually started his own business which became Kilovac Corporation.

Dorothy was busy raising four kids, leading scout packs, being involved in PTA and writing a column for the Pasadena Star News.

In 1969, sick of the smog and looking for a place where the business could expand, the family and the business moved to Carpinteria and found a welcoming community. Dorothy helped start a girls club (now Girls Inc. of Carpinteria) so that the young girls whose moms worked at Kilovac would have a place to go after school.

She also worked as a scout for Better Homes and Gardens for 17 years, traveling around California finding unique gardens and collaborating with the photographers and editors to produce magazine articles.

In 1982, she was honored as “Carpinterian of the Year” by the local chamber of commerce. Her strong belief that the Carpinteria community could raise millions of dollars in just a very few months to purchase the Carpinteria Bluffs open space turned out to be correct and, with the hard work of many, the Bluffs is protected forever. The Dorothy Campbell Trail honoring her efforts can be found there today. Dorothy was also involved with the local League of Women Voters and enjoyed many friendships through her participation in the League.

A proud grandmother of seven and great grandmother of four, Dorothy loved her time with the little ones as well as traveling the world with Fos. Homestays in Japan and England were special experiences they shared. Thanks to the help of a team of strong women caregivers led by neighbor Leslie Saenz, Dorothy was able to live out her life in her home with its shady brick patio and flower gardens.

She is survived by her husband Foster; her sons, Doug, Don, and Steve, all living nearby, and daughter Kathy (Bressler) of Wilson, Wyoming; her grandchildren Foster, Rosie, Jason, Lauren and Erin Campbell, Matt Urias, and Jenny Carr; and her great-grandchildren, Tosh and Chloe Carr, and Charlotte and Oliver Campbell.

No date for a memorial service has been set as yet. Those wishing to honor Dorothy are encouraged to make a charitable donation to the Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

Marlene Symonds Cordero 4/26/1953 – 7/22/2018

Marlene Symonds Cordero passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at Aurora Medical Center in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Born in Kenosha to Roy and Betty (Orrico) Symonds, Marlene “Mar” was the oldest of her siblings, Bill and Richard Symonds. In 1967, Mar, along with her mom and brothers, moved to Carpinteria, into Godmother and Aunty Rosemarie (Orrico) and Nilo Fanucchi’s home, to start a new life in California.

Carpinteria was wonderful to Mar, here she built deep and lasting friendships, married and had her baby girl Sara (Lamar) Jereda in 1977.

In 1984, she met and married the love of her life, Ronald L. Cordero. Mar gained two more daughters: Kelli (Cordero) Ingrum and Colleen (Cordero) Frazier.

Moving back to Kenosha in 2004, Ron and Mar enjoyed a wonderful life together raising their girls, doting on their ever expanding list of grandbabies, and connecting with lots of family and friends. Ron passed away on May 4, 2014, leaving Mar with a heartbreak that could never heal.

Marlene was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and the Italian American Club Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bocce and cards. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marlene is survived by her children Sara Jereda of Kenosha, Kelli (Keary Jr.) Ingrum of Palmdale, California, and Colleen Frazier of Kenosha, her mother Betty Orrico of Kenosha, William Symonds of Tennessee, eight grandchildren Anthony, B.J., Christopher, Dylan, Loray, Gary, Erin and James, and eight great-grandchildren. Marlene is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mar was preceded in death by her husband Ron Cordero, father Roy Symonds, Richard Symonds, Aunty Rosemarie (Orrico) Fanucchi, Uncle Nilo Fanucchi, cousin Stephen Fanucchi, grandson Keary III, and a great-grandson Aiden.

Richard Anthony Dowdall

It is with great sorrow that our Good Buddy, Richard Anthony Dowdall passed away July 24, 2018. He had a sparkle in his eyes, always had a smile on his face and the biggest of hearts. He had nine lives and fought courageously with every single one of them with the utmost dignity. All he ever wanted was to be happy, healthy and free.

Rick was most proud of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Diane (brother in law Bill Nichols), daughters Mary Fancher (Steve Fancher), Katherine Dowdall (Matt Richardson), Nancy Dowdall (Siobhan) and son Nathan Dowdall (Samantha), grandchildren Gavin, Ruby, Luke and Aiden, along with many pseudo-children and wonderful friends. Rick was predeceased by his parents Mary and Lester Dowdall, and sister Kathy Smith.

Please join us for Rick’s Celebration of Life on Sunday, September 9, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Carpinteria Women’s Club.

Richard Stout 2/15/1955 – 7/24/2018

Rick Stout was born in Sunnyvale, California, and grew up on Catalina Island, where he played baseball and competed in motocross. His love for the outdoors started at a young age with surfing and camping around the island.

He attended UCSB and became a geologist. He loved learning, continuing his education throughout his career in professional geology, engineering geology and hydrogeology.

He worked for URS Corporation, where he was a Vice President. He was a calming, intelligent mentor and friend to many colleagues. He appreciated the beauty of the earth.

After graduating from UCSB, Rick packed a backpack and flew to Europe.

With no itinerary, he traveled through most of Europe, the Middle East and the north of Africa. He shared this love of traveling later with his family.

He loved to hike, bike, golf, camp, fish, ski and play beach volleyball. He loved music, went to concerts and played guitar and ukulele. He was a voracious reader.

Rick married the love of his life in 1987, and they had two beautiful daughters.

They made Carpinteria their home, and he lived there for over 25 years. He was an extremely supportive husband and father, dedicated to his family. Rick took great pride in their accomplishments and joy in their happiness.

He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, drinking a lovely glass of wine or attending a concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl. He stayed close with a group of dear friends from his 20s, with whom he planned yearly golf trips, played volleyball on East Beach, and hiked and biked many local Santa Barbara trails.

Rick was an example of patience and generosity. He had a great sense of humor, and he could connect with everybody.

He fought his disease with courage.

If you would like to, please donate to the Braille Institute of Santa Barbara or the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, two organizations that were a huge help to him and his family.

Rick is preceded in death by his father, Wayne Stout, and he is survived by his wife, Lorie Stout, his daughters Camille and Brianna, his mother, Doreen Stout, his sister, Leslie Stout, and his brother, Chris Stout.

Words cannot describe how much he will be missed.

Prize-winning performances for FFA students

Twelve students from Carpinteria High School’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) Student Agriculture Experience program showed their livestock at the Ventura County Fair during a week-long competition—a culmination of the commitment and hardwork they’ve demonstrated throughout the academic year. At week’s end, on Aug. 12, many of the students were awarded top ribbons for their performance.

Beyond rewards, participants in this program receive hands-on learning opportunities, real-life responsibilities, and education in not only livestock and agriculture, but also economics, budgeting, recordkeeping and project management.

“The program helps to give students direction and a pathway in a variety of fields, including technology, marketing, writing, speaking, livestock and horticulture,” said Tami Ryan, FFA advisor.

“The program gives them ownership and responsibility. Especially this year, with everything that happened in Carpinteria with the floods and fires, these students had a huge responsibility in caring for and worrying about the animals.

“The kids did awesome at the fair,” Ryan added.

ARTCETRA View the splendors of King Tut

The Carpinteria Valley Historical Society will lead an excursion to the California Science Center on Wednesday, Aug. 29 to view the world premiere of the exhibit, “King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh.” The largest King Tut exhibition ever toured, it includes over 150 authentic artifacts from King Tut’s celebrated tomb—60 of which have never traveled outside of Egypt, until now. With three times as many artifacts than ever exhibited before, it is an unprecedented display of artifacts all coming directly from King Tut’s tomb, the most intact royal tomb ever to be discovered. This will be the last exhibition of Tut’s treasures outside of Egypt, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities.

Participants will also view the film “Mysteries of Egypt” on a 7-story IMAX screen.

Countdown for “Book Nerd” quilt raffle

The Carpinteria Friends of the Library kicked off the “Book Nerd” quilt raffle in mid-May. The total funds raised so far will provide the library with 300 new books, surpassing the original goal of 250 new titles. With one month to go, the raffle is in the homestretch and CFOL is reaching for an updated goal: To raise enough funds to purchase 400 books. Tickets are on sale every day at the CFOL Bookstore where the quilt is on display, and will also be available at several outdoor venues throughout the month of August. Ticket prices are $5 each or $20 for five tickets. The winning ticket will be drawn on September 1.

Cheers to a good cause at Surf ‘n’ Suds Beer Festival The Surf ’n’ Suds Beer Festival, held on Saturday, Aug. 11, brought hundreds of people from all over California and across the country to Carpinteria’s Linden Field.

The event brings together over 75 craft brewers, surfboard shapers and emerging and iconic 805 bands. “We are so excited to be able to host Surf ’n’ Suds Beer Festival in our own backyard and bring awareness to the craft beer movement and surfing lifestyle that surrounds our community,” said Andres Nuño, event co-organizer.

Surf ‘n’ Suds may be a blast, but it’s also a benefit. Proceeds from the festival are donated to over 15 local nonprofits, with a major contribution given to The Young Brave Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping youth beat cancer. “(Being) supported by a local event like Surf ‘n’ Suds is incredible. It takes a village to beat this disease, we’re so thankful for all the love and support,” said Nathaniel Curran, co-founder of The Young and Brave Foundation.

This was the sixth year of the Surf ‘n’ Suds Beer Festival in Carpinteria, and all signs point to many years to come. “We had a great turnout,” said Nuño, “and can’t wait to get started in 2019!”

Junior Guards show off life-saving skills at summers’ end competition

As the Carpinteria Junior Lifeguards’ 7-week summer season came to an end, they held their annual Swim-Paddle-Run Triathlon fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 10, at Carpinteria City Beach. All JGs competed in the triathlon, demonstrating the wide-range of lifeguarding skills and endurance training that they acquired throughout the summer. Along with the triathlon, JGs also participated in a beach flag competition in which they raced to find small pieces of hoses dispersed on the beach. Beach flag is a victim recognition game, simulating the challenge for lifeguards in quickly spotting those in need of help.

Surf Happens launches annual Surf and Skate competition

On a clear, sunny morning down at Santa Claus Beach last Saturday, Aug. 11, Surf Happens held their first ever Board Riders Club Surf and Skate Contest.

“We’ve been doing events in the area for 23 years, but this is the first time where we’re doing a surf and skate combo,” said founder Chris Keet, whose dedicated to making sure that local skateboarders have a place to go while they await the construction of a skate park at the site of the Thunder Bowl next to City Hall. “We opened up a shop and training center on Santa Claus Lane … we have a half pipe and an area for doing surfingspecific cross-training,“ Keet said.

In 1999, Surf Happens opened its first school with the purpose of teaching the sport of surfing to all ages. But, on this day it was all about the youth, as the competition opened up with the U-8 to the U-14 divisions searching for that perfect wave. The event catered to young surfers of all abilities, as there was a novice division where riders were actually pushed into the wave by their parents.

“You get the parents involved, which is always fun,” said Keet.

In the more highly-skilled division where the participants paddled in, Ronin Castorino was named the winner in the U-8 category. Top finishers in the other classifications were Joey Penueta for the U-10s; Logan Curry in the U-12; and Mac Sharp for the U-14s. There was also a Wahines—young women surfers—division U-14, won by Luella Pace.

But, the competitions held over the years are not just about winning. “It’s a starting place, you never know where you’re going to go,” explained the former UCSB-grad who developed a passion for the sport while earning degrees in both communications and English. Even in the non-pressure, fun atmosphere that Surf Happens’ events foster, Keet’s seen his share of successes. “Some of our kids in these events went on to stellar amateur careers and professional careers like Lakey Peterson … Conner and Parker Coffin, Killian Garland, Demi Boelsterli, the list goes on and on.”

In the afternoon, for the skateboarding segment, the competition moved over to what Keet referred to as the “dojo,” a term often associated with the martial arts. In the U-8 division, Devin Mclaughlin captured first place, while in the U-10 division, it was Noah Ellis who

Overall Surf and Skate Combined categories were also recognized with Maddox Keet winning the U-8 title; Santino Molfetta, the U-10; Logan Curry taking the U-12 crown; and Mac Sharp, the U-14.

The young athletes were all treated to pizza and refreshments, courtesy of Palomina Wood Fire Pizza, and a number of pizzas were also sold to families to raise funds for the Surf Happens Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Other sponsors included Channel Islands Surfboards, Hurley International, Carver Skateboards, Lighthouse Skate Shop and Scosche. Awards were also handed out, contributing to the festive atmosphere of the afterparty.

“They (the kids) remember these times their whole lives, whether they become doctors or teachers or whatever they become; they’ll always keep surfing and skating,” said Keet. Certainly, a memorable day for all involved.

Foresters capture seventh NBC World Series Title

The Santa Barbara Foresters will be bringing back another trophy to its home office on Carpinteria Avenue, as the team of top collegiate baseball players won its seventh National Baseball Congress (NBC) championship with a 6-5 victory over the National Junior College Athletic Association national team last Saturday night (August 11).

The seventh title is the most of any team in the 84-year history of NBC World Series.

The ‘Sters finished the season 39-8 overall for Executive Director\Head Coach Bill Pintard who resides in Carpinteria.

Tied 5-5 going into the bottom of the ninth, Santa Barbara clinched the win, pushing across the final run with a bases-loaded walk. Forester left-fielder Patrick Mathis, who was named the World Series MVP, drew the walk for the game-winning RBI, and homered in the first inning to put his team up 2-0. Earlier in the season, two former Carpinteria High School baseball players, David Martinez (Class of ’17) and Toby Spach (Class of ’18) both got a chance to play for the eventual champions who play at Pershing Park in Santa Barbara.

A MONTHLY MUSE MELINDA WITTWER I must have been eight or nine years old when I discovered there were guns in my brother’s closet. They weren’t his guns. They weren’t loaded. But they sure looked like rifles (at least to me) just like Roy Rogers or Gene Autry carried as they went after the bad guys. My mother explained that one of the guns was a .22 caliber that had been my grandfather’s, and the other was a hunting rifle my dad had used for deer hunting. When I asked about bullets, my mother gave me a funny look and said the bullets were long gone and would not be returning.

First of all, I could not imagine my dad killing a deer. How could anyone kill such a creature? Secondly, why keep guns to just rust away in a closet? And finally, what good was a gun without ammunition? Clearly I had very little experience with firearms beyond what I had seen on our tiny-screened TV. My mother, a worrier of the highest sort, was not at all bothered by these guns residing in our house. She and my father had grown up at a time when men often fed their families with what they hunted. Hunting was not a video game, target practice or only in the movies.

Hunting was a way to provide food, albeit a violent way, where the shooter often watched life drain out of their victim’s eyes. The hunter saw, experienced, felt, and sometimes mourned the results of shooting a gun.

Today we have “progressed” to violent video games and movies that make shooting to kill a form of entertainment. We have automatic weapons that can shoot so many rounds per minute that I got exhausted just researching this information. And somehow our society has given birth to mass shootings that have killed victims in post offices, schools, movie theaters and too many other places to list.

The second amendment gives us the right to bear arms but does that mean any type of weapon? Who really “needs” an automatic rifle? If a burglar breaks into my home, do I have to shoot him 50 times in one minute to protect myself?

Wouldn’t it make sense to outlaw all assault weapons?

Personally, I don’t like the idea of having a gun around my home, but if I did have a gun, a loaded gun, and someone I loved was threatened with bodily harm, I have no doubt I could aim and pull the trigger. Whether or not I would actually hit anyone is another question all together.

More than 135,000 students in the United States have lived through school shootings since Columbine. Could this happen in Carpinteria?

I understand that guns give people a sense of protection, but I’m not so sure this is true. Research published in the American Journal of Public Health reported that, even adjusting for confounding factors, individuals who were in possession of a gun were about 4.5 times more likely to be shot in an assault than those not in possession.

According to the Gifford Law Center, more that 75 percent of guns used in suicide attempts or unintentional injuries involving newborns to 19-year-olds were stored in the residence of the victim, a relative or a friend. Also, guns in the home increase the probability of death in incidents of domestic violence.

The Trace, another online source, states that every week in the U.S. 136 children and teenagers are shot. All of these injuries are preventable. Also, more than 135,000 students in the United States have lived through school shootings since Columbine. Could this happen in Carpinteria? Can we be sure we can prevent it?

If nothing else gets you questioning our obsession with guns, just think of the costs involved when someone is shot. Again, according to the Gifford Law Center, “Researchers conservatively estimate that gun violence costs the American economy at least $229 billion annually.

Gun violence costs more than $700 per American every year, more than the total economic cost of obesity and almost as much as the annual price tag for the entire Medicaid program. Half of these costs are borne by U.S. taxpayers.”

Maybe the NRA would like to donate more to cover the costs of gun violence and a little less to making sure there are few restrictions on owning firearms.

Bottom line, we want our kids safe when they are at school, the movies, work or just walking down the street. Certainly we should at least consider how we can improve our gun laws to help make this happen.

This building has attracted many people and is responsible in no small measure for the growth of the town.

In the meantime, arrangements were made for the construction of a building in the west part of town for the accommodation of the school for the Mexican children, the old building at the corner of Walnut Avenue and the state highway having become inadequate for the growth of our Mexican population. This is also a very attractive building.

A deputy investigated a report of an abandoned vehicle with pills on the seat on Rincon Road at 10:20 p.m. on June 12.

A good system is to have posted rules for borrowing and have a kitchen chairman who keeps track of everything. Another good rule is to require all items to be returned in a certain number of days. Most people lack storage space for things that are just used occasionally, so they like to borrow those items. The pastor should understand that major donors don’t get a pass when borrowing things from the church. Go write up your rules now and remember the adage, “neither a borrower nor a lender be.”

The Cox family went on holiday to London, visiting such brilliant sites as Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the London Bridge. A tad later the family fancied a visit with British family members who they hadn’t seen since Beth’s father’s funeral, 11 years ago. After London, the family travelled to Paris at 130 mph on the Eurostar train that zips right under the Chunnel. In Paris, they strolled the banks of the Seine and saw the Eiffel tower. After taking in the masterpieces of the Louvre, Beth described the museum as “a vast drink in of tourism and history of Napoleon’s gluttony for money.” The family’s final destination was Italy, with visits to bustling and beautiful Florence, Tuscany and Rome.

From Carpinteria to Qaqortoq with CVN

This summer, Robert and Christine Thompson visited Qaqortoq in southern Greenland. With a population of around 3,100, Qaqortoq is the fourth largest city in Greenland. The city is quite isolated with no roads linking Qaqortoq with any other population center. On their trip, the Thompsons visited the Shetlands, Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland. While Carpinteria was enjoying temperatures of 80 to 90 degrees, Greenland temperatures hovered between 38 and 48 degrees. The Thompsons recommend travel to this part of the world in summer only.
