After a winter of fire and floods, Franklin Trail needs all the help it can get. The third annual Island View Trail Race on Sunday, Sept. 16, aims to put funds in the trail repair coffers. The race includes a 4-mile course and a 10-mile course. Both start at Carpinteria High School, 4810 Foothill Road, and are out and back courses that wind around the campus and nearby orchards before climbing up Franklin Trail. The shorter course, which starts at 7:15 a.m., turns back at the end of the single track, and the longer course, which starts at 7 a.m., continues on the dirt road to the beginning of the Los Padres National Forest single track trail. The cost is $35 for the 4-miler and $65 for the 10-miler before Aug. 19 and $5 more thereafter. Find out more at islandviewtrail.run/.

Bus line 21x to be suspended, 20 increased

Santa Barbara MTD’s annual service changes, including adjustments to Carpinteria bus lines, will go into effect on Monday, Aug. 20. Line 20, which serves Santa Barbara, Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria, will pick up and drop off more frequently in the morning and late afternoon peak times. The frequency will increase to every 15 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon. Line 21x will be suspended due to heavy construction activity on Highway 101 in the corridor. Reimplementation of the Line 21x service will be considered on a yearly basis.

Other changes outside of Carpinteria include new routing for the Line 15x, which serves as an express route between Isla Vista/UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) and Santa Barbara City College (SBCC). The change reroutes the Line 15x off the Mesa and loops around SBCC’s main campus. The route will travel in a consistent one-way direction all day from UCSB toward Isla Vista and Camino Real Marketplace, then to SBCC, rather than reversing direction in the afternoon as it currently does.

These changes were developed through a yearlong planning process, assessing ontime performance, changing traffic pressures and patterns, and community outreach.

Marybeth Carty has been selected as Executive Director of the Natalie Orfalea Foundation. In this capacity, Carty will oversee the Natalie Orfalea Foundation in its mission to partner with organizations doing transformative work in the areas of conservation, social justice, global health, women and girls, education and the arts. Black bear wanders into Seacoast Village

A large male black bear meandered through residential areas near the intersection of Foothill Road and Linden Avenue on Sunday, Aug. 5. Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies and California Fish and Wildlife wardens monitored the animal before it reportedly wandered back into the wilderness on its own accord.

Sightings of the 300- to 350-pound animal were first reported at approximately 6 a.m. on Aug. 5, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputy Margaret Kunigonis, when a resident reportedly saw the bear roaming on Vallecito Road.

Kunigonis responded to a report of a bear near a church at 1111 Vallecito Road, but upon arriving on scene the deputy was unable to locate the animal.

Another call came in from Alvarado Road near Foothill Road, about 20-minutes later. A resident there said a bear was on his property but may have left through the backyard. Again, the deputy was unable to locate the animal. Soon after, deputy Kunigonis turned onto Foothill Road from Linden Avenue and was driving eastbound when she spotted the bear walking on the sidewalk toward Seacoast Village. The bear then turned into the Seacoast Village neighborhood, and Kunigonis worried that someone might be out walking their dog or getting the newspaper.

“He kept looking back at me and running,” the deputy said, adding “he was very big” and that the bear seemed bothered by the sound of her patrol car. On Cambridge Lane, the bear made a left turn then went through a pedestrian gate to El Carro Park and Kunigonis and two other deputies in patrol cars behind her lost sight of him.

Deputies initiated a reverse 9-1-1 call to alert residents to the bear’s presence, but could not locate the animal. A nursery owner near the corner of Foothill and Casitas Pass roads called at 9 a.m. to report the bear in an orchard area, and a home owner on Myra Street allowed deputies to access the back yard to observe the bear on the other side of a fence.

Two wardens from the Department of Fish and Wildlife then responded to observe the bear and decide on the best course of action. After calling their supervisors, wardens Max Magleby and Tyler Lutz, chose to let the bear remain in the shade of the avocado orchard where it appeared to be resting. The bear was breathing hard and at some point, laid its head on the ground and fell asleep, according to warden Magleby.

“We call these ‘no harm, no foul’ situations if wildlife aren’t doing any damage or haven’t attacked anyone,” Magleby said. With the rising heat of the day, and given the fact that the bear appeared to be resting, as well as the relative proximity of open space in the hills to the north of Foothill Road, the wardens chose to “let him rest in the shade,” rather that anesthetize and transport the bear.

By the morning of Monday, Aug. 6, the nursery owner called Fish and Wildlife to say that he saw paw prints leaving his property through an open gate. “Animals are attracted to water just like you and I would be,” warden Magleby noted. According to Magleby the bear looked “very healthy, with a nice, shiny coat.” The wardens remained on scene for approximately 6 hours, and Magleby said, “People don’t realize it, but we have a lot of bears here.

Operation Wetback was lawless, arbitrary and based on xenophobia. The Border Patrol, aka La Migra, used racial stereotypes to justify its cruel treatment of immigrants. Inside the U.S. anti-Mexican sentiment was pervasive and harsh portrayals of Mexican immigrants as dirty, disease-bearing and irresponsible were the norm.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because it is happening again. The Trump administration is using some of the same brutal tactics used in Operation Wetback to deport Mexicans and Central Americans today from the U.S. Trump’s horrific zerotolerance policy of separating children from their parents, some of which will never be united again, is unbelievably cruel and inhumane!

Although a country has the right to determine who gets to cross its border and for how long, anti-immigrant fearmongering imperils what America is as a country and society. Much of the problem is that America is becoming a majorityminority country and if you strip away rationales for restricting immigration you get “white extinction anxiety.” There is no reason for this anxiety unless you are a racist.

I saw my first white shark underwater at Carpinteria Reef in the early 1960s.

I was free diving for halibut. For me, discretion was definitely the better part of valor, so I hopped on my paddleboard and attempted to break all speed records to shore. My diving buddy, James Hay, had been attacked by a white shark off Bodega Bay in 1959, so he needed no prompting.

Was Carpinteria indeed the “World’s Safest Beach” as the sign proclaimed?

So far, no one has been injured or killed in Carpinteria by a white shark, despite the recent abundance of sharks.

However, in 2014, Carpinteria resident Darren Kenney had a close call off Horseshoe Rock, offshore from Padaro Lane.

A white shark, estimated at 10 to 12 feet long, chomped into his kayak behind the seat. If it had clamped down in front of the seat, Kenney would have had at least one leg severely bitten. His kayak sinking, Kenney was rescued by a passing boat.

Recent attacks on seals—from Rincon and the Carpinteria seal rookery through to Padaro Lane—have been numerous.

Bat rays, favorite prey for juvenile white sharks, have also been killed, sometimes even recorded on video. Stand-up paddle boarders, kayakers, surfers and swimmers have been approached closely on numerous occasions.

Surf camps at Santa Claus Lane have stand-up paddleboarders watch for sharks. They also post people on shore to observe, and if a shark is sighted, they order the kids ashore. The Surf Happens camp also uses an electromagnetic shark deterrent device, developed in South Africa and imported from Australia. This is prudent and praiseworthy.

“The sharks know what they’re doing,” a Carpinteria lifeguard once said, implying that the sharks won’t attack people. That’s true until it happens. Some folks are convinced it’s just a matter of time. Any number of folks have said no attacks have occurred in their area. That’s until it happens.

Folks say that more people are killed by dogs or in traffic accidents every year.

That’s certainly true, but how many of those people were in the water? Such assumptions may make people feel safe, but this can also lend a false sense of security. I advise folks to record the time they spend in their cars, then spend the same amount of time in the water at Surf Beach near Vandenberg Air Force base, the site of numerous deadly white shark attacks.

No one has taken me up on that.

In researching shark attacks for more than 50 years, Ralph Collier, chair of the Shark Research Committee, has come up with some interesting theories as to why sharks attack. Collier thinks some encounters are investigative, in which the shark bites down on an object to see if it’s edible. Other encounters involve sharks closely approaching people or even brushing against them or their watercraft.

Some folks feel that shallow water is safe. The vast majority of attacks in California have occurred in shallow water, in some cases in as little as three feet of depth.

This may be investigative behavior or it may be a way of discouraging visitors in their realm. In several cases, surfers and kayakers have been closely approached by sharks, but when they didn’t leave, the sharks became more aggressive, biting the watercraft or the people. The sharks may be defending their feeding territory.

In some cases, the sharks attack without warning in what is described as violent predatory behavior. Is this a case of mistaken identity, in which the shark mistakes a surfer, swimmer or paddle boarder for a seal? Possibly. It may also be that people have not heeded earlier warnings from the shark, so the shark becomes more aggressive. This has happened several times.

Some folks feel that shallow water is safe. The vast majority of attacks in California have occurred in shallow water, in some cases in as little as three feet of depth.

Other folks believe that you are safe in kelp beds. Seals and sea lions, favorite prey of larger white sharks, often hang out in kelp beds, where they are attacked.

Some folks believe that if seals or sea lions are nearby, you are safe. The logic behind this is mind-boggling. Some people believe that if dolphins are close by, you are safe. Sorry, but people have been attacked when dolphins are nearby.

Although attacks on people have increased greatly since 2000, the odds are still slight that you will be one of the unlucky ones. Shark warning signs are often posted after an attack. Heeding these is prudent, as well as avoiding areas where attacks are prevalent.

Peter Howorth is founder and director of the Santa Barbara Marine Mammal Center. It has rescued many thousands of marine mammals since 1976, when the organization was established by Howorth. It stopped rescuing pinnipeds in 2015, but is still involved in the whale rescue network. Howorth has collaborated with the Shark Research Committee and scientists from government agencies for over 40 years, investigating shark attacks on marine mammals and humans.

Sly’s restaurant at 686 Linden Avenue will close after 10 years this September.

Annie Sly, co-owner with husband James, characterized the events around the closure as “all positive.” The building sold in July, and “the timing is right for James and I to retire,” Annie said.

Sly’s celebrated its 10-year anniversary on Aug. 8 and the tentative closing date is Sept. 23.

The steak and seafood eatery has held a unique place in Carpinteria’s menu of local restaurants over its decade down-

town. It combined a casual cocktail vibe in the front room and a quiet fine dining experience in the rear, with the emphasis always on the cuisine crafted by James.

Annie said new property owners plan to open a restaurant at the site but it was premature to elaborate on what the next incarnation will be.

“It’s been a great run,” Annie said.

“We moved to Carpinteria in 1989, so this is our home. We wanted to create a neighborhood restaurant and were able to make that happen.”

Planning commission approves 11 new homes

At its Aug. 6 meeting, the City of Carpinteria Planning Commission granted approval of five apartments at 1112 Linden Ave. and six new single family residences at 1335 Vallecito Place. Both projects drew attention from neighbors, the Linden Avenue apartments due mainly to concern about parking availability and the Vallecito Place project due to a two-story home at the site imposing on existing homes. The Vallecito Place development, which proposes to build the six new units alongside Faith Lutheran Church near Ogan Road, is pending approval from the Carpinteria City Council.

Planning commissioners voted 3-1 to approve the Linden Avenue project (Commissioner Jane Benefield dissenting), which would reconfigure a singlefamily home and detached garage into the five new units totaling 3,821 square feet. The new units will be comprised of two, two-bedroom units and three onebedroom units.

In recommending that the city council approve the Vallecito Place development, the planning commission added the condition that one two-story home should be oriented toward the center of the project, not in a location that directly borders any existing homes.

DUNCAN’S REEL DEAL M AT T D U N C A N Cassius Green’s (Lakeith Stanfield) job prospects are not very impressive.

Just to get a telemarketing job, Cassius makes up a story about having worked at a bank, puts together a fake “Employee of the Month” award that he proudly props on his knee throughout the interview and even brings in a giant trophy he supposedly won in high school (he didn’t).

Alas, Cassius’ fake news is quickly debunked. But, luckily, as the interviewer points out, the standards for getting a telemarketing job are not exactly sky high—pretty much anyone can get the job. Plus, the interviewer figures Cassius’ fabrications show initiative.

And thus Cassius’ bottom-of-thebarrel scraping finally turns up some dregs. It is a terrible job, of course, but Cassius is just the man for it.

In fact, Cassius turns out to be a great telemarketer. Though he is meek and uncommanding in person, Cassius finds his groove on the line.

His main trick—passed down to him

by Langston (Danny Glover), an old veteran telemarketer—is to speak in a “white voice” … you know, like how white people talk. And Cassius has a great one (in fact, it is literally a white voice—spoken by David Cross, aka Tobias from “Arrested Development”).

So Cassius is on his way up. Literally, actually. The “power callers,” as they are mythically referred to, work upstairs—they even have their own special elevator. It’s a telemarketer’s dream to ascend to such lofty heights.

Except some telemarketers—well, most of them you’d have to think— know that upward mobility isn’t much of a thing in the telemarketing biz. They are lowly peons, and they know it.

And they hate it. After all, they bring in all the money, but they hardly share in the profits. So through the encouragement of a perennial rabble-rouser named Squeeze (Steven Yeun), the employees of the telemarketing firm decide to band together, unionize and then strike. And Cassius, along with his girlfriend, Detroit (Tess Thompson), and his best friend, Salvador (Jermaine Fowler), are right there on the picket lines.

So when Cassius is called in to his boss’s office, he thinks he’s going to be fired. Instead, he’s promoted. Well, then, um, you see, things are different.

Lowly-peon Cassius was up in arms, defiant, a rebel for the cause, etc. But

upper-crust Cassius, well, that’s not so simple—he has bills to pay, after all, and it’s not like he is against what his friends and former colleagues are fighting for.

Thus, Cassius finds himself in one of those classic capitalist conundrums. It’s easy to fight the system until it’s about to pay you.

And, indeed, “Sorry to Bother You” is at its very best when it is hitting these notes—specifically when it is rendering its blistering critique of capitalism, consumerism, wage slavery, plutocratic politicians, and basically everything about how our economy is ordered nowadays. It is sharp, incisive, and, more often than not, spot on.

“Sorry to Both You” is also funny if you have the right sense of humor.

I don’t think I have the right sense of humor. (Or maybe I was just mad that my MoviePass didn’t work. Again.

Ugh.) Still, I could see that, if I did have the right sense of humor, I’d find the movie funny—maybe even quite funny. It is strange, surreal, quirky, understated and dry. Cassius and Detroit, in particular, have a certain warmth and liveliness to them that comes, at least in part, from their not being cookie-cutter characters.

And that’s a relief—a relief that the movie is (potentially) funny and warm.

Because otherwise it might just piss you off. Maybe it will anyway. For what it is tackling—specifically, the plight of nonelite workers—is not a happy topic.

So, one way or another, this movie is evocative. It may make you laugh. Or cry. Or both. But it should stir something up.

“Sorry to Bother You” is rated R for pervasive language, some strong sexual content, graphic nudity and drug use.

Farm Cart Organics

Feeding Carpinteria through Community Support, Education and Organic Produce

By Claire Burke If you drive on Carpinteria Avenue, you’ve no doubt noticed an antique farm cart across the street from the Lucky Llama. Six days a week (closed on Thursday) from 11:30 to 5:30, this heirloom cart is the home to Farm Cart Organics, a local business selling certified organic fruits and vegetables.

While Farm Cart Organics started in 2012, the cart in that space has a much longer history. Owner Katherine Lesh remarks, “My parents had the same farm cart—the same exact wagon in the same exact spot from about 1998 until 2006.”

Lesh’s parents, Tom and Laura Shepherd, sold fruits and vegetables from their farm in that space until the city bought the land and they moved the cart back to their farm.

In 2012, Lesh’s parents gifted the farm cart to Lesh and her husband Jason.

Initially, the Leshes sold produce from Katherine’s parents’ farm, but when

their farm moved to Buellton, the daily morning harvest and commute became too difficult to bring back to Carpinteria.

Katherine and Jason then did their own bit of farming to sell at the cart, but this coincided with the beginning of the multiyear drought and as a new farm, it was too challenging to sustain the crops.

Fortunately, these struggles led Katherine and Jason to focus on finding the best, local, certified organic farmers to work with so they could offer the freshest, healthiest and most delicious produce to the community.

Subscription service

In addition to the Farm Cart on Carpinteria Avenue, the Leshes offer an $18 a week Farm Box subscription service.

This box is different from a Community Supported Agriculture box in that the produce from their box comes from a few different farms instead of offering a share of one single farm. The Farm Box

While the Leshes aim to provide the most local produce possible, they note that not all of what they sell is from Carpinteria because not everything is grown here.

The Farm boxes are available all year round and the produce is exclusively certified organic, which is a top priority for Jason and Katherine. One of their goals is to educate the community about the importance of certified organic produce.

Unlike produce advertised as being grown without pesticides, the organic certification process provides third-party confirmation of pesticide-free practices.

Another benefit of the farm box is that members can add to the contents of the box through the Farm Cart Organics website. A list of what is included in each box is sent out on Fridays and members have until Sunday to add to their box.

The system allows members to sample more seasonally available options than what might be offered in the standard box, while still having the convenience of the set delivery day. Members can choose to pick up their box at the Farm Cart in Carpinteria, or other pick-up locations from Goleta to Ventura. The Leshes also offer home delivery for an extra $6 a box.

A newsletter with suggestions and recipes comes with each box. “I love the food, but one of my favorite things is getting the email with new recipes,” said Carpinteria local Alli Macias, who started the subscription farm box four months ago. “I shopped at the cart for years but am not that into cooking. I decided to get the farm box subscription in hopes that it would help me get more inspired and it did!”

Giving Back

Helping the community is another focus for the couple, and they accomplish this goal in a few different ways. In addition to using as many local farmers as possible, the Leshes give their subscribers the opportunity to donate their box to a low-income family if the subscriber needs to skip a week—they also have the option to simply cancel their order for a particular week as well. The Leshes often donate any leftover boxes to eliminate food waste. And in January, Farm Cart Organics launched a new program focused on giving back to local schools.

The School Food Box program offers special farm boxes curated with family in mind. They are $25 dollars a box weekly or every other week, and $3 of that goes directly back to the school.

The food selection is slightly different than the standard Farm Box, offering snack type food such as berries or sugar snap peas when in season. The recipes in the School Food Box newsletter are focused on families and kids as well, and most conveniently for parents, the boxes are picked up at the school. Kathrine summarizes the new program saying, “the idea is that we bring the boxes to school before school gets out and people pick up their box and their kids. It’s a fundraiser… it adds up and it’s really cool for schools.”

Now, did you understand anything in that last sentence? Because about four years ago I wouldn’t have either.

The world of energy and resiliency can seem confusing to most of us because of the acronyms and special terms that are used. Let’s start with Community Choice Energy: also called Community Choice Aggregation, CCE refers to a process that allows local governments to form a partnership to combine electrical loads—the amount of electricity used by their communities—in order to both purchase energy and develop renewable energy projects.

Most CCE customers do not notice a difference other than a line item on their energy bill. The intent of CCE programs is to deliver more renewable energy at competitive pricing to customers while maintaining local control over where that energy comes from.

Historically, customers in Southern California have received energy from

Southern California Edison, an investorowned utility. In the traditional energy model, the utility company purchases energy and delivers it to the customer through their system. Energy is not geographically located—the energy that is delivered to customers can come from other states.

In the CCE model, the control of purchasing energy is put in the hands of the local program, allowing for more varied sources. It also allows energy programs to be developed locally. For instance, a CCE program could develop an incentive for renewable energy projects that homeowners install to benefit the community and increase local resiliency (I will get to that).

The investor-owned utility, in this case Southern California Edison, will still be responsible for the delivery of that energy by maintaining transmission lines and the overall energy grid.

Back to energy resilience: southern Santa Barbara County, is near the end of the line for the electrical grid. The Thomas Fire/Flood events last winter exposed how vulnerable the area is to power outages, including those that last multiple days. Because of this, the cities of Carpinteria, Goleta, Santa Barbara and the County of Santa Barbara are all moving forward with developing a CCE program.

Those same agencies are also working on strategic energy plans, exploring areas where renewable energy projects can be implemented. Done correctly, local energy projects can help keep the power on even if something were to interrupt the delivery of energy from other areas.

Strategic energy plans analyze areas that would be best suited for projects and

evaluate them based on a number of factors, including location, cost and feasibility.

Carpinteria is not the first area to explore a CCE program. There are several successful ones up and running around the country, including 17 in California.

CCE and strategic energy planning complement each other and help make local communities more energy-independent, especially in the case of emergency events. This doesn’t just apply to disasters, but also excessive-heat and highwind events. And greater local control means that savings get passed directly to local consumers of energy, which results in more money to put back into the local

2018 Warrior Football Preview

BY ALONZO OROZCO The Carpinteria High School football team will play in a new league this season—the Citrus Coast League. Joining them will be Fillmore, Hueneme, Malibu, Nordhoff, Santa Clara and Santa Paula.

“No one knows about the League, it’s hard to tell (who will win it) …,” said second-year Carpinteria Head Coach Rick Candaele.

One thing for sure is that longtime rival Bishop Diego is not on the schedule, as the Warriors and Cardinals will not meet this year for the first time since 1957, when Bishop was then known as Santa Barbara Catholic. But the other teams in League are all teams that Carpinteria has played in recent years with the exception of Hueneme. “They’re bigger and they’re going to be a little bit faster,” said Candaele of the Vikings who played in the Pacific View League with other large schools such as Channel Islands and Oxnard.

This year’s Carpinteria squad will be led by two seniors: quarterback Vance Keiser and running back Isaac De Alba.

Both players are three-year varsity team members. “Keiser’s kind of a gamer, if you look at him in practice, he’s not extremely fast, he’s not going to throw the ball the length of the field; but when he gets in the game, he plays well,” explained Candaele of his experienced signal caller. De Alba, who missed most of last year because of an injury, will be counted on to run the ball and also play the linebacker spot on defense. Another senior, Jonathan Mora, will accompany De Alba at running back.

The Warriors will also count on senior wide receiver Brady Sturdivan who has a strong record of long-scoring plays.

Jacob Macias, yet another senior, will be at wideout also.

As far as the offensive line is concerned, the Warriors will play two very capable tight ends, juniors Will Collins and Jacob Mata. However, filling in the slots at the center, guard and tackle will be challenging, as the five starters from last year’s senior class all graduated.

Coppel should see a lot of playing time, with Juarez also playing nose guard on the defensive side of the ball. Juniors Conor Bailey and Daniel Grimes will also compete on the offensive line, as well as sophomore Esai Vega.

But the players will need to learn quickly, as Carpinteria starts the season with two quality opponents. The Warriors open at home against Rancho Alamitos of Garden Grove, a school with an enrollment of over 1,900 students.

Game two will be away, against Santa Ynez who has beaten Carpinteria three years in a row. “The first two games will gage to see where the team is at…,” explained Candaele who begins his 50th year of coaching, which has included stints at both UCSB and Claremont McKenna College.

On defense, junior Ever Santamaria will play alongside De Alba, and De Alba’s brother Richard, a freshman, will also spend some time at linebacker. Chris

Ramirez, basketball point guard and All-Frontier League cornerback from last year’s squad, returns for his senior year.

The MVP of last year’s JV team, junior Diego Hernandez, will also play corner and junior Abel Reyes will also spend some time there. Callaway and Collins will pull double duty playing on the

defensive line, joined by junior Enrique Marin. Soccer player Alberto Arroyo will handle both the place kicking and punting duties.

In an early start to the season, the Warriors open against Rancho Alamitos on Aug. 17, with the kickoff at 7 p.m. at Valley Memorial Stadium.

Senior Isaac De Alba (#44) will play both running back and linebacker on defense, while Junior Enrique Marin (#29) will play running back and defensive line.

Empower Fitness athletes place at The Duel

Twelve members of Empower Fitness in Carpinteria participated in The Dynamic Duel competition on Sunday, July 15. The Duel, hosted by Precision CrossFit in Agoura Hills, is a five-division, same sex partner competition. Seventy teams from all over Southern California participated in The Duel, which included three CrossFit-style workouts (WODs) that focused on strength and conditioning.

The competiton, full of the usual snatches, synchronized burpee box jumps, double-unders and more took place in 90+ degree heat. The WODS were released to athletes in advance of the event.

Empower Fitness brought home three trophies. Athletes Bryan Cornet and Conrad Robinet (Team Carp Deadweights) took first place in the Beginner Men’s Division, Melissa Freeman and Rosie Andrade (Team Girls Gone WOD) took first place in the Women’s Beginner Division, and Empower Fitness owner Emlynn Tursick and coach Millia Hinchman (Team Carp Beaches) took second in the Women’s Intermediate Division.

Hugo Goodfield earned first place on Aug. 4 at the Santa Barbara Fiesta Rodeo at the Earl Warren show grounds, making him a two-time Mutton Busting Champion. He also broke the arena record for distance traveled and speed. His sheep ran the entire distance across the arena, then took a hard turn at the wall towards the migrated herd. Mutton Busting is a featured event every year and gives children under 60 pounds and between the ages of 4 and 6 a chance to test their agility on wild and wooly livestock.

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY “I always wanted to chronicle the family history with my mother. She was always interested in that. I wanted some researchers I’d worked with to talk to her, but my mother was a little antsy about it. I know she would’ve gotten into it. But I wasn’t forceful, and I didn’t make it happen. That is one regret I have. I didn’t get as much of the family history as I could have for the kids.” Robert DeNiro I understand DeNiro’s regret, as I, too, failed to get my mother’s story in her own words. But that doesn’t mean a book about her life won’t be written. She left precious memories with everyone she ever touched, and these discovered treasures have been a source of comfort during the last year. Among the stories my mom’s friend, Betty, has shared, are these.

“Bev became my best friend in the fifth and sixth grade. She lived a few blocks from MGM Studios and we used to sit on her lawn watching the cars go by to see anyone famous. We went crazy one day when Clark Gable drove by in his Jaguar convertible with the top down. Some days we wrote letters to the studios asking for photographs of our favorite stars.

“On some Saturdays we went to the theater to watch a double-feature and when finished, we would head over to where my mother worked and she would give us money for a hamburger and a cherry or chocolate coke. My mother worked as a cleaner in a shopping center near Bev’s house, and one time the owner took Bev and I to downtown Los Angeles to a costume warehouse, where we picked out majorette outfits to wear to distribute flyers for the cleaner’s specials. We were excited being able to see

“The end of sixth grade I moved to San Francisco. When we were a tad older we would spend a week or two together during summer vacation. During San Francisco summers, we went everywhere on the street-car for the sights. When Bev got a car in high school, it was finally to the beach, in a car!”

As fortune would have it, my mom wasn’t without a best friend in her daily life for long, as at the beginning of the new school year, Sharon came into her life.

“I met Beverly in seventh grade. I was new to the school, and I walked into the restroom and there was this beautiful platinum-haired girl, and we started talking. I asked her name and she said, ‘Beverly Ruzicka.’ I said, ‘Are you Mexican?’ and she just rolled over laughing!

That was the beginning.

“One of our favorite things to do was roll a hot dog up in a Wonder Bread roll and sit at the table in her mother’s kitchen and look out at Culver City. The table was at the window in the kitchen and we’d sit there and watch people go by. Beverly loved Frank Sinatra and Robert Wagner. Robert Wagner was plastered all over her bedroom wall! We used to love it when the carnival came to Culver City. It made us feel wild! We could go there alone, even at night, and walk around.

“In the summertime we did everything. We took the bus to Venice and went to the beach all the time. There was a time when we were at a swim party at a friend’s house, and we started giggling while we were in the pool, and down we went! We didn’t know how to swim and they had to drag us out because we were

laughing so hard. We were just laughing all the time.”

These are but a few of the stories that color in the details of my mother’s early history. So I would encourage Mr. DeNiro the same way I would each of you. Reach out to family and friends for what they held dear with your loved one who is no longer with you. You will reap a lifetime of riches.

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year

We welcome new and returning families to the 2018-19 school year and we look forward to greeting our students on the first day of school, Aug. 27. During the summer months, administrators, teachers and staff have been working hard to prepare for another exciting school year for CUSD. The campuses are filled with large construction equipment and workers busily preparing for the new Gen 7 classrooms and replacing roofs, sidewalks and restrooms. A new VOIP phone system has been installed to replace the outdated phone lines.

Teachers participated in workshops and conferences to improve their instructional skills, learn new curriculum and develop new units of study. We hired a new Interim Principal at Carpinteria Middle School, Lisa O’Shea, from Oxnard High School and she is looking forward to meeting CMS staff and families. We also hired new teachers for kindergarten and second grade at Canalino, kindergarten at Aliso, kindergarten and first grade at

Don’t carry all your books around. When I was a freshman I felt like I needed to carry all my books around. It really puts a strain on your back. Just use your locker and go to it in between periods. go support the sports teams. Having a cheering crowd on your side can make the difference between winning and losing and you might just be part of something great.

They’re both really nice and fun teachers to have.

get involved! Join football or do choir—this is an excellent way to not only discover your passions but also get to know your fellow classmates.

Avoid the taco meat and pasta. The salad bar is a solid option for the off days.

grades actually matter in high school. In middle school everyone graduates no matter what but in high school grades can seriously affect your future. So don’t make the mistake of not really trying your freshman year.

The jump to high school isn’t so bad. High school isn’t like it is in the movies. everyone’s pretty nice and helpful, especially for your first year.

take classes that you enjoy. A lot of people feel that they need the hardest schedule they can get or have to take classes that they don’t enjoy and this can really drain the fun out of school. In high school you have the ability to get into fun electives like art and culinary.

Don’t dress to impress. Some people feel that they need to dress up for school. If you’re a fashion icon then go ahead, but people really don’t care if you’re wearing designer brands or pajamas. So just go in what you feel best in to be in at school. go to the library for seventh period. Mrs. Bradley the librarian is super nice and fun to be around. It’s a great place to get your work done, play UNO with some friends, or even just lay back and read a book.

There are yellow lines around all classroom doors. Those mean don’t walk through them, or you can get smacked by a door.

Every Monday we have pizza for hot lunch.

There are two tether ball courts. Fourth grade has a short rope. Small kids play with the longer rope.

One day of the month we have family picnic. Your family comes and has a picnic with you for lunch.

When you are at recess, there is a bathroom where the TK class is. You don’t need to run to the far one.

There are three flip bars for flips. The bars right next to the TK class are not for flipping.

When you are in K through second grade you get to have a big buddy. If you are in third grade through fifth grade, then you are a big buddy. Big buddies help their little buddies and do activities together.
