Businesses support library reading program

Exactly 445 people signed up for the Summer Reading Program at the Carpinteria Library this year. Over the summer the library has celebrated the anniversary of the moon landing, explored robotics at a children’s book club meeting and experimented with different art techniques in the Storybook Art program. Kids’ favorite book selections have been “The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown, “Unicorns are Real” by Holly Hatam and “Wolf Hollow” by Lauren Wolk.

The last day for participants to register in the reading program is Thursday, Aug. 1, and Monday, Aug. 8, is the last day to pick up prizes. Countywide program offers deals on pet spay/neuter

The Responsible Pet Ownership Alliance is offering Santa Barbara County dog owners an opportunity to have their dog(s) spayed or neutered, rabies vaccinated, microchipped and registered for a Santa Barbara County dog license for $80 (a savings of more than $500). A one-month supply of flea medication and e-collar is also included.

Sheriff’s Office warns: keep pets safe from hot weather

As the temperatures climb so do the risks for pets. This month, Santa Barbara County is expected to have temperatures into the 80s. “This may not seem too significant to some but strenuous exercise, being left in a hot vehicle, or walking on hot pavement can cause a beautiful summer weekend to turn deadly for a family pet,” stated a release from the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office. Inside of a hot car, temperatures can jump from 80 degrees to 100 degrees in 10 minutes, and reach close to 115 degrees within 30 minutes, according to the statement. If the temperature outside is just 77 degrees, the asphalt can be close to 125 degrees.

County Animal Services recommends owners exercise dogs early in the day or in the evening hours; don’t leave pets in a vehicle, even in the shade with windows down; protect animals from sunburn by ensuring adequate shade or applying a pet safe sunscreen; and provide access to clean cool water at all times.

Santa Barbara Museum of Art will host a recruiting event for prospective docent volunteers on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 3 p.m. in the museum’s auditorium at 1130 State Street. President of the SBMA Docent Council Mary Joyce Winder said, “We are looking for people that are passionate about art and want to share their passion with others.” An informative talk will be followed by a tour of the current exhibition and a wine and cheese gathering where recruits can meet with docents and find out more about the organization.

With water supply dwindling, Water District plans advanced purification project

Like many communities throughout California, Carpinteria faces sustained and historic drought conditions. By 2030, the Carpinteria Valley Water District estimates that dry years will come with a water deficit that could be as high as 1,550 acre feet—approximately 505 million gallons of water—enough to fill 775 Olympic-sized swimming pools, or serve the average daily use of 6,200 local households.

In response to the shortfall, CVWD proposes a $25 million project to take wastewater that has been cleaned, purify it and then inject it into the groundwater basin to be used for various needs, including potable drinking water.

Advanced purification uses a multistep treatment process, including membrane filtration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet/advanced oxidation to produce pure water to replenish the groundwater basin. The same advanced purification system is currently being used in 10 Southern California cities, including Cambria and Oxnard, and has been scientifically proven to be safe, according to CVWD. If approved, CAPP would take water that has already been cleaned at the Carpinteria Sanitary District (CSD) Wastewater Treatment Plant, purify it in a newly-constructed Advanced Water Purification Facility, then deliver it through a pipeline to injection wells for storage in the groundwater basin.

Proposed injection locations include the Canalino Elementary School or St. Joseph Catholic Church fields.

Currently, after treating wastewater, CSD pumps it into the ocean. Instead, CAPP proposes to reintegrate that water into the valley’s water supply. The CAPP project has the potential to provide 1.2 million gallons of water per day for storage in the Carpinteria Valley Groundwater Basin—enough to meet over a quarter of CVWD’s water needs—according to Robert McDonald, general manager of CVWD. “We have a local water supply that’s drought-resistant, if not drought-proof,” said McDonald at the CVWD-CAPP public hearing on July 18, “to us, it’s a project that needs to happen.” CAPP, McDonald has stated, will replenish the groundwater basin with purified recycled water, creating a locally-controlled, droughtresistant drinking water supply.

Blair further questioned why the drilling and injection sites have to be located within city limits, when the water district includes unincorporated Carpinteria Valley.

In response, McDonald explained that the structure of the aquifers is such in CVWD’s district there are parts confined and parts unconfined, with Foothill Road dividing confined/unconfined. For the most part, within city limits, the aquifer is confined, with water sandwiched between clay layers. On the other side of Foothill, in the nonurban areas, the aquifers are uncontrolled. “We can’t really control it,” said McDonald, “That’s the primary reason why we chose the sites we did, to keep it in the confined area.”

McDonald also fielded questions on property easements and project costs. McDonald stated that any property-owners who were asked to yield land for the project, would have their land appraised and participate in a negotiation for the sale.

The estimated cost, stated McDonald,

is approximately $20 to 25 million, with a commitment from CVWD to fund at least 50 percent of the project with grants.

Resident Dennis Cutler praised the water district and encouraged swift action, stating, “I see this water source as not new. I see it as existing. It came from the sky. It came from us. It was potable.

It became unpotable. Now it’s going to be potable again. I see that as pretty straightforward. We’re not widening the highway. We’re not bringing it in from Hoover Dam. It’s here.”

CVWD is currently midway through the CAPP environmental impact review process (EIR), and has opened a 60-day public comments period (July 1 to Aug. 30). A final EIR draft is anticipated in November, with a final design completed over an additional year. Construction could commence as early as 2021.

GoFundMe set up for assault victim’s children In the wake of the death of 32-yearold Eric Romero, the victim of a deadly assault on July 20 in downtown Carpinteria, the family has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for Romero’s two young children, Mercedes, 9, and Bentley, 1.

Emily Arnbrister, a close friend of the children’s mother, Lindsay Morrison, organized the fundraiser for the children on the mother’s request. The goal is to raise $5,000.

“By now the town has heard the news of Eric Romero’s passing on July 23, 2019,” writes Arnbrister on GoFundMe, “His death was unprecedented and completely unexpected. He leaves behind two children. His daughter Mercedes who is nine and his son Bentley who is only a year old will have to continue life without their father. Bentley is going to grow up with only the shared memories provided of his father, and Mercedes is suffering from knowing the loss of her dad.

“Mercedes is currently attending Mount Carmel private school (on a scholarship) and is a great student academically. Bentley and Mercedes are being well-loved and taken care of by his mother and grandmother.”

Remembering Eric Romero

Throughout Carpinteria, in a memorial outside Carpinter’s Church and on social media, friends and family of Eric Romero are remembering the person they’ve lost.

Romero’s older brother, Jerry, described Romero as a good-hearted person who was always looking to help others. His brother recalled that he once saved the life of a friend, and in his final moments, Romero saved six lives by donating his organs. “If you were cold, he would give you his shirt,” said Jerry.

Romero was great with his children, according to their mother, Lindsay Morrison. “He always wanted to do something fun with them.” His brother noted how he loved the whole community and could make friends with a rock, “he loved life.”

Over the years, Romero had been employed at Danny’s Deli—where he was known to be a legendary sandwich maker—and more recently, at Paragon Builders and Village Pool Supply. He was an avid pool player and captain of the pool league in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara.

The family will hold services at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with a rosary on Aug. 8, from 4 to 8 p.m., and a mass

Martha Shaw MacGillivray 4/23/1928 – 7/14/2019

It is with sad news to announce the passing of long time Carpinteria resident, Martha Shaw MacGillivray, 91, on July 14, 2019.

In 1948, Martha married Chuck MacGillivray in Fresno, California, where she had grown up. They soon moved to Carpinteria where they lived for close to 70 years and raised their three children.

Martha had an early and fierce passion for politics and women’s rights. In 2004, she attended a March for Women’s Lives rally with her granddaughter, in Washington, D.C. Martha went on to participate in several local Pro Choice rallies for the remainder of her life.

As Chairman of the local chapter of the American Field Service (AFS-USA), Martha was instrumental in coordinating the international exchange program of many foreign exchange students and families in Carpinteria. She also hosted, within her family, exchange students from Thailand and Switzerland. With Martha’s advocacy of this program, many lasting friendships were made and prompted her travels to Thailand, Switzerland, Greece, England, Scotland, Germany, Hong Kong, France, Italy, Amsterdam and Canada.

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) also benefitted from Martha’s tireless energy. She served a leading role in the local district (Santa Barbara) for many years.

She was a strong believer of the value of public education and the commitment between parents and teachers to provide children with opportunities to make their dreams a reality.

In 2002, the family lost their eldest daughter (Susan MacGillivray). Martha is also preceded in death by her husband (Chuck MacGillivray), sister (Ruth Evans) and brother (George Shaw).

Martha is survived by her daughter Jeanne Wood and husband Brent (Hesperia, California), son Charles “Scott” MacGillivray (Orange, California) and wife Catherine, three grandchildren (Carolyn Lohman, Curtis Wood and Daniel Wood) and one great-grandson (Xander Wood), and many loving nieces and nephews.

Protect local papers, we need them

Where are my local papers? The internet is great but in this age of managed mega media, local small-scale communication is vital and—shall I say—sacred.

Whatever your political persuasion, I believe our local papers should be all around town and in our face, reminding us to pick one up, be responsible citizens and know what is going on locally. If we don’t know, how can we care?

Where are my local papers? All the local news stands from both sides of Casitas Pass, i.e., Shepard Place and Casitas Pass shopping centers, a major Carpinteria hub, have been removed. There are no local papers. I understand this is due to a decision by the new landlords. You know, those big outside malls chomping real estate investment firms that swoop in, grab up storefront properties, raise the rents through the roof and drive out small local businesses?

And now they take it upon themselves to sweep away all the local papers from Carpinteria and Montecito, the Spanish language papers, tourist mags and the Santa Barbara Independent. I will reiterate: these small publications should be encouraged with financial breaks when possible, welcomed into our communities and in our face. Sorry, “you might find one inside one store, around the corner, and gee, that isn’t including the Hispanic publication or the Independent,” is not good enough.

This is a matter of local free speech, multi-lingual free speech, not to mention tourist enticements. I hope my fellow Carpinterians will not continue to put up with this situation.

City thrives with more downtown parking

On Friday and Saturday, Carpinteria for the first time in history hosted the California State Lifesaving Championships. It was a great event and a success for our town. We had great participation for the Junior Lifeguards competition on Friday. Saturday was the senior lifeguard competition and we had some of the top lifeguard athletes in the state here. On Friday, we had Junior Lifeguards from Santa Cruz to San Diego and every beach town in between. God blessed us with a “Chamber of Commerce” day—perfect beach weather—and city staff had the beach looking as good as it gets.

Unfortunately, typical of our otherwise wonderful little town, one of our residents tried to ruin our day. She complained vehemently about our use of the big, vacant, weed-strewn city lot on Linden directly next to the train tracks.

The lot was used by lifesaving teams to park their vehicles after delivering their equipment and children at the beach.

There was supervision of the parking throughout the day.

Another way to describe those same people is, “Our friends and colleagues in the California lifesaving community and their children and families.” All those visitors were eating at our restaurants and otherwise doing business with us here in Carpinteria. Our restaurants were full and everybody had a good time. Apparently, some residents are not interested in seeing our local businesses who rely on visitors do well. Fortunately, most of us do not see it that way.

Beach parking brings dangerous traffic

What is happening to our beautiful beach community? I am the owner of 4900 Dorrance Way, a six-unit building on the corner of Dorrance and Elm. This complex consists of mostly moderateincome families, and several units have families with small children. When the city approved its construction decades ago, setbacks and parking requirements were far different than they are now.

There is diagonal street parking and a little yard area for the kids.

My tenants were horrified to see streams of cars and people directly outside their front doors last Friday morning.

One mother was very frightened. Neither they nor I were given notice, and I received numerous complaints regarding trash, noise and destroyed plants within the bounds of my property. Small children are the real risk when a decision like this is made with no notification to property owners. These children who play at the dead end of the street were forced to stay inside all day while the public was routed through a gate suddenly opened at the dead end of Elm. The city’s opening a parking lot against our properties is at the very least extremely insensitive, especially without some formal notice or process. It is simple human decency to prevent this from ever happening again.

This is a sad indication of what would occur should a permanent parking lot be erected on this corridor. The steady stream of cars and public make for a potentially very dangerous experience.

I strongly urge the City Council to

rethink the idea of a parking lot bordering such a large residential area near the beach. I ask again: What is happening to our beautiful beach community that is such an integral part of Carpinteria’s identity?

Open space, no to train station inn

Why is our city park department promoting a developer to build a hotel on our city beach parking lot? Why is our park department promoting moving the public parking lot onto our great open space corridor on the south side of the tracks in order to allow this development to take place? This does not enhance our parks in Carpinteria.

In the meantime, where is the skatepark the kids have been promised for the past three decades? Where is the off-leash dog park that’s been talked about forever? We want to keep our open space open and we want our much-needed parks.

Cannabis careers count

I work in the cannabis industry and feel incredibly fortunate that our local farmers had the courage to be pioneers in this newly emerging industry. As a 25-year-old, I don’t know if I’d be able to live in my home town without the professional opportunity provided by this new industry.

However, we support the transparency brought on by these regulations.

We believe it’s necessary to stabilize the cannabis farming industry and eliminate the black market. I take pride in making sure our farm is ahead of the curve both from a compliance standpoint, and as a farm and business.

It’s exciting to be part of something new. It’s also challenging. I know most people in Carpinteria see cannabis farming the same way we always saw flower farming—as a local industry that’s a big part of our economy and the agricultural backbone of our area. Agriculture is in our DNA, and these greenhouses are built to grow ag products.

To the few who are ashamed that cannabis is grown in Carpinteria, I say, it’s legal, well regulated, and a great opportunity that shouldn’t be squandered.

Greenhouse farms in Carpinteria Valley are major economic providers. There are a few people in town who can’t look past the stigma of the plant to see the great benefits of cannabis farming in the valley. We should thank our farmers for being pioneers, and for not selling off greenhouse properties to developers.

There’s nothing wrong with reaping the benefits of a newly legal crop. It doesn’t hurt Carpinteria’s reputation.

Ten years from now, when the dust is all settled, I hope we haven’t blown it. In 10 years, nobody will be worried about cannabis, but some agricultural town (hopefully Carpinteria) will be growing it and keeping the money there.

Rincon/Foothill Principal Barnaby Gloger is moving to Portland, Oregon, and CHS Principal Gerardo Cornejo will assume leadership of Rincon/Foothill in Thursday, August 31, 2017  7 addition to his duties at CHS. By not replacing the position of principal for Rincon/Foothill, CUSD saves approximately $167,736, according to an email from Superintendent Diana Rigby.

Rincon/Foothill pupil administrative duties will be assumed by the superintendent’s office.

According to a statement provided by Rigby, “Rincon/Foothill will be relocated to the front portables on the CHS campus. The Rincon/Foothill students will be able to participate in CTE (Career Technical Education) and receive more individualized special education services where needed.”

Staffing at Rincon/Foothill will remain at current levels with two full-time teachers, a counsellor and office coordinator at 80-percent full time, and two instructional assistants.

According to the district’s Facilities Master Plan, CHS administration will occupy a newly constructed building in 2021-22 as part of Measure U projects.

Rincon/Foothill and Special Education Administration will use the current admin building on the CHS campus when Measure U construction is complete.

During Measure U-funded renovations of Summerland School in 2021-22, students and staff from Summerland will occupy the former Rincon/Foothill campus.

“All Over but the Shoutin’”

I’ve always found William Faulkner to be a bit above my pay grade, intellectually speaking. Remarkably, I’ve found a bluecollar alternative, Rick Bragg. “All Over but the Shoutin’” provides a masterful introduction to Bragg’s descriptive prose, which often borders on the three-dimensional. The angels and devils that dwell within Bragg have contributed mightily to the honing of his remarkable storytelling; family, the South, resiliency, alcoholism, food, coming of age and tragedy and triumph are an abbreviated sampling of the themes that wend their way through this remarkable reminiscence.

Southern literary luminary Pat Conroy (“The Water Is Wide,” “The Prince of Tides”) contends, “Rick Bragg writes like a man on fire. And ‘All Over but the Shoutin’’ is a work of art. I thought of Melville, I thought of Faulkner… you feel things in every line this man writes. His sentences bleed on you. I wept when the book ended… a masterpiece.”

It should also be noted that Conroy was so moved by “All Over but the Shoutin’” that he sent flowers to Bragg’s mom. If “All Over but the Shoutin’” leaves you wanting more from this talented yarn spinner, read “Ava’s Man.” A riveting page turner on Bragg’s grandfather, although Bragg never met him in person, “Ava’s Man” makes it clear that he’s never forgotten him. “He died in the spring of 1958, one year before I was born. I have never forgiven him for that.”

Read “All Over but the Shoutin’” and “Ava’s Man”—you’ll be glad you did.

Longtime surfer leaves dream posting

“Your Turn, Adrian” by helena Oberg

“Your Turn, Adrian” by Helena Oberg, illustrated by Kristin Lidstrom, isn’t like most graphic novels marketed towards children. The text is sparse and the artwork is sophisticated enough for adults.

While not for every avid graphic novel reader, this book is for those looking for an empathetic read.

Young Adrian is having a difficult time at school. He gets bullied by his classmates, is a struggling reader and lacks support from his busy parents.

Adrian seems to suffer from anxiety, but happily daydreams about becoming a trapeze artist. One day he befriends a dog he meets on the street who accompanies him wherever he goes. The dog eases his anxieties and Adrian becomes more comfortable with himself. One page scene reads “I could feel Heidi’s soft fur.

The words came to me. I was reading.”

His classmates are clearly annoyed at him, indicating that he still isn’t the best reader, but that doesn’t matter to Adrian.

He overcomes his anxiety and becomes a confident reader by the end of the book.

Recommended for struggling readers and dog lovers ages 9-12.

Mike Perez, his wife Kelly and their Rottweiler Rico have been fixtures at the upper Rincon parking lot off Bates Road as county park hosts. For Perez, the position has entailed taking care of the facilities including the restrooms, the gazebo/barbecue area, and keeping an eye on the comings-and-goings at one of the most-popular local beaches. But most important to him are the connections he’s made with the community of surfers and beach goers that frequent the “Queen of the Coast.”

“There’s just a good vibe at Rincon,” Perez said. “It’s the best local community I’ve ever seen in my life.” And after a lifetime of coastal dwelling, having grown up surfing across Southern California, the 59-year-old Perez has some perspective.

He’s made a neat niche for himself as a camp host over nearly 20 years, alternating between the State Parks of El Capitan on the Gaviota coast in winter, and the San Mateo campground in Southern Orange County in summer—both locations offering some of the best waves in the state in those respective seasons. When the opportunity to become the park host at Rincon came up, Perez didn’t hesitate.

“I got the best windows (of surf) of anyone,” he says happily. And of the regulars at Rincon, Perez said, “When you surf Indicator and you know all the boys, it’s still old school.”

However, the good ride he enjoyed has come to an end. The park host position is a temporary job, and the county parks department has slated a new park host to rotate in at Rincon. Perez relocated to Nevada for the time being, where he and his wife are remodeling a home they own and

As with many things in life, Perez noted that his various million-dollar locations as a park host—including coming into the Rincon posting when he learned it was open after surfing there with a buddy—have come down to “luck and timing.” Surely the friends he’s made at the fabled point hope both Perez’s good luck and timing continue, and that he’ll one day return to Rincon.

Carpinteria Library Book Club “Baby Teeth”

The Carpinteria Library Book Club’s August selection is Zoje Stage’s “Baby Teeth.” Playwright and filmmaker Stage made her debut as a novelist to rave reviews. “Baby Teeth” is a riveting psychological thriller told from the alternating points-of-view of a mother and daughter.

The willfully mute girl goes through childhood charming her father while engaging in a battle of wills with her mother.

With a chronic disease already straining her health, the mother struggles to raise a child whose bad behavior has her expelled from several schools at an early age. Forced to home school her daughter, the mother’s health and sanity, and perhaps her marriage, suffer. Readers have found themselves thoroughly engrossed in this heart-wrenching story as tensions build within this small family.

Using the competition as an opportunity to practice showmanship skills before the Ventura County Fair (July 31–Aug. 11), Carpinteria FFA members performed solidly for their group. Alondra Badillo brought home a third-place ribbon in Novice Goat Showmanship, Natalia Gonzalez earned a fifth-place ribbon in Novice Sheep Showmanship and Ivan Espinoza received a fourth-place medal in Advanced Sheep Showmanship.

The Food Liaison raises $36K for Boys & Girls Clubs

Jason and Nirasha Rodriguez, owners of The Food Liaison, have once again carried on the legacy of the late philanthropist Michael Towbes with their weeklong fundraiser Christmas in July. This year, the Rodriguezes have supported the community in donating $36,000 to the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County (UBGC). Since the fundraiser first launched three years ago, they have raised over $100,000 for local organizations.

The Food Liaison is located in a Towbes Group-owned shopping center. “Michael took a personal liking to Nirasha and me,” said Jason, “appreciating our history and the vision we had for our business. When Michael passed away, I approached the Towbes family with the idea that Nirasha and I wanted to name the annual event after him as a way to remind Carpinterians of his generosity and the ability he had to bring people together for a greater good. Michael has this recognition throughout the world, but I wanted to make sure it was highlighted here in Carpinteria. They graciously welcomed our idea and as a result we have Christmas in July.”

Michael Baker, CEO of UBGC, stated that with the support of The Food Liaison the organization will be able to reach even more youth that need their services. “The Food Liaison is a great example of what a corporate citizen should be,” said Baker.

“Jason and Nirasha Rodriguez are incredible role models for all of our members.”

During the fundraising week, July 22 to 26, TFL teamed up with local businesses, Byers Scientific & Manufacturing, BEGA, The Berry Man, Inc., CARP Growers, Avoganic and PlanMember. Each day TFL donated 50 percent of their counter sales and partner businesses matched the donation. On one day, foodies were given an extra treat. Rori Trovato of Rori’s Artisanal Creamery provided free scoops of ice cream with each purchase/donation on Tuesday, July 23. Trovato’s dad, Joe Spinelli, carried the torch for the 1984 Olympics hosted in Los Angeles. He was nominated by the Boys and Girls Club as a Local Hero for his contribution to their organization. Because of this, the Olympic Committee chose him as one of the people to carry the torch through Southern California. Trovato and Jason decided that free scoops to benefit the community’s local Boys & Girls Clubs was the perfect way to honor her dad.

In honoring Spinelli and Towbes, Jason hopes to underscore that “good people are never forgotten.”

Restoring balance: stopping the spread of invasive plants

ALENA STEEN Carpinteria’s beauty lies in the natural world that surrounds us: steep bluffs crumbling into the ocean, the sprawling, tidal world of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh and the rugged peaks of the Santa Ynez Mountains. these wild spaces, which community members and local government work to preserve and protect, are vital resources for the other-than-human world pushed out by urban and suburban development. large areas of protected wild lands close to cities and towns are refuges for the many native plants, animals and insects upon which our own well-being depends. protected wildlands are a source of biodiversity, a safeguard for ocean health via erosion control, and a sink for carbon storage. these are increasingly important values in the face of human-caused climate change.

Many wildlands, despite their rugged beauty, are affected by human development in the form of invasive plants. Invasive species are those introduced from other parts of the world which dominate and outcompete local flora. Scientists make a distinction between non-native, naturalized species (those that were not originally “native,” but have found a balanced niche in an ecosystem) and invasive species, which out-compete native species, often to the point of endangerment or extinction. plants have always found ways to move around the globe, via wind and water currents, and intentional cultivation and dispersal by earlier humans.

In the Carpinteria Valley, the Chumash introduced or encouraged the growth of several plant species that were less common without human intervention. the idea of a pristine or original wilderness is complicated, since ideas of a mythical “wild” past often erase the human agency and skilled environmental management of indigenous people.

Delicate native flowers such as this fire-following bluebell (Phacelia spp.) are quickly covered up by non-native plants with invasive growing habits. however, the worldwide impact of invasive species is a growing problem, greatly exacerbated by the speed and ubiquity of international travel and trade, as well as by poor land management. Invasive species are contributing dramatically to the declining health of many wild systems. Invasive species––unchecked by the balance of thousands of years of co-evolution between predator and prey, insect pest and plant defense––run riot in new ecosystems.

Invasive plants can take over a landscape, making the ecosystem much less complex and healthy, leading to a chain reaction of decline. Introduced plants find ecological niches free from the predatory herbivores and insect pests or diseases keeping them in check in their native habitat. these plants displace reliable food and shelter sources for native birds, insects and animals. the folded topography and diverse microclimates of California lead to greater specialization in ecosystems: birds that nest in only one kind of tree, insects that thrive on only one species of plant, plants that are pollinated by only one insect or animal. thousands of years of co-evolution can be destroyed almost overnight in geological terms—invasive plants displace native plants, and their dependents are unable to recover.

one local example is the mustard that coats the foothills in pure yellow in early spring. Mustard has taken over large sections of the coastal mountains, turning a lively and humming community of coastal sage scrub, insects and animals into a vast, single-plant monoculture.

Yellow mustard is also a much greater fire hazard than the native vegetation.

Yellow mustard turns dry and brittle in the summer, whereas the coastal mountain’s native plants remain green and alive (though dormant) in the summer.

Mustard is tinder, a more likely source of ignition that burns hot and fast.

Ice plant is another example of an invasive species with negative impacts on local plant communities along the coastal bluffs. Its relentless vegetative propagation covers everything in its path with such a dense mat that native seedlings do not have room or sunlight to germinate.

Ice plant also increases coastal erosion with its rapid growth, dense mass and shallow root system that literally pull down the bluffs. native plants such as aromatic sages and wild sunflowers have deeper roots and prevent erosion.

Much can be done to prioritize the health and wealth of local ecosystems. landscaping with native plants in whatever space is available provides food and shelter for local fauna, and

Kids’ art thrives at CAC

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center “Arts by the Sea” camp runs for seven weeks each summer, exposing children to various art techniques and mediums in morning classes and music or drama sessions each afternoon. Children 6- to 12-years-old learn about Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism and other styles, exploring methods of applying similar characteristics in their own artworks. The camp also has weekly fieldtrips to paint at the beach. Instructors Sara Leo and Laurie Pincus have led the camp in past years and continued this summer as well. “The arts matter!” insists Arts Center Board Chair David Powdrell. He points out that one never knows the impact that arts can have on children, or “which new doors will open in their lives because of art.”

Local grower Hans Brand shares his view of Carpinteria Valley’s cannabis industry

right—so that we’ll have a long-term future. Building a brand is expensive. This is for my kids.

We really want to [support] holistic and healthy living. Our product is cleaner than any product out there.

The owner of B & H Flowers on Foothill Road, Hans Brand, spent most of his life in cut flowers. Now he grows cannabis in his greenhouses and heads up the cannabis cultivation company Autumn Brands, with co-owners Autumn Shelton, Esther, Hanna and Johnny Brand. I met with Hans at his office on Foothill Road to learn more about his company and its agricultural footprint in the Carpinteria Valley. This interview has been edited for publication.

CVN: Some say that major global investors are financing some of the cannabis grows in the valley. Is Autumn Brands backed by outside investors?

HB: We have been approached, yes, but we have no interest. We are self-financed.

We are smart and frugal. We didn’t go buy expensive new systems. We use what we had.

We have great employees. We pay our guys really well. Our employees are doing better than when we were in flowers.

They are the big winners and they are happy.

COASTAL VIEW NEWS: I understand that this is your first interview since pivoting your cut flower business to cannabis cultivation. Why now?

Hans Brand: Yes, this is my first interview. I stayed in the background because of banking. Now that Autumn Brands has full banking, we are OK [to be more public].

A neighbor came to me, a Concerned Carpinterian, and we talked for two hours. In the end she said, “Hans, you have to tell your story, people are killing you out there.” She said, “I’m not your friend. I’m not your foe.”

CVN: Your neighbor must have brought up what many people are saying, for example, questions about how much money you’re making and if you’re paying taxes, political influence and odor issues. How do you respond to those concerns?

HB: In my business, I can show you everything. Every gram. We do not spray.

Zero pesticides. Everything gets measured. There is not a gram that can get off this farm and into the black market.

These rumors out there have no basis, no fact. When you get statements out of us [cannabis cultivators] they have to be backed up. This is a serious business… we have to be honest and have the facts to back it up.

I’ve heard statements that are completely false, like that I don’t pay taxes.

That’s false.

CVN: How did you make the decision to move from cut flowers to cannabis?

CVN: How have employee wages changed?

HB: The starting hourly wage is now $15 whereas before it was $10. If you’re brand new and you don’t have any experience, you might start at $14, and it goes up to $25.

CVN: What is the company ownership breakdown?

Johnny Brand and his father Hans are co-owners of one of Carpinteria’s first permitted cannabis cultivation facilities, Autumn Brands, which started cultivating medical marijuana in 2014. The company now also grows cannabis for recreational use.

HB: The switch to this crop was economic. We got hurt by the Free Trade Agreement. We couldn’t compete with countries paying $10 a day. The flower business was hurting. This was an economic decision. That’s business. If I’m profitable that doesn’t mean I’m a criminal. We are definitely for profit and I’m not embarrassed about it.

When we started this, probably at the end of 2014, at that time it was solely medical. I wasn’t sure. I was against it, actually. The people that came to me [from within my company, B&H Flowers], they had to convince me. Yes, the money is good, but that’s not the only thing. I asked

Autumn Shelton, then CFO of B&H Flowers [now co-owner of Autumn Brands], to research it. I also asked my lawyer to look into it. Autumn investigated the rules and came back and said, “Yes, you can safely grow medical.”

I personally have never used the product, but I think we do a lot of good.

CVN: What does Autumn Brands do that differentiates it from other businesses in the sector?

HB: My wife Esther and I own 25 percent; my daughter Hanna owns 25 percent; my son Johnny owns 25 percent, and Autumn owns 25 percent.

CVN: How did Autumn Shelton transition from CFO of B&H to co-owner of Autumn Brands?

HB: We were able to adjust our business and stay afloat because of Autumn. She knew how to measure and adhere to regulations … At the beginning, we’d see a helicopter and get scared. We thought we knew everything, but you never know. Autumn keeps me safe … that’s why the partnership. And I brought in my kids—one day it will hopefully be a nice exit for me.

HB: We really try to grow a clean product.

Every Autumn Brands plant has a unique barcode that identifies it in a tracking and regulatory compliance system (Metrc) that is monitored by the state of California. Autumn Brands also submits proof of licensing for their cannabis cultivation and for all companies involved, including distributors and vendors.

Autumn Brands is a pesticide-free farm that uses beneficial insects for pest control and a closed-loop irrigation system.

CVN: Recreational marijuana is still prohibited federally. How do you feel about the legal issues, specifically federal verse state laws?

HB: Now I feel really good. We’re a good industry. Politicians can’t figure it out, but I think over the next five to 10 years it will all be figured out.

The influence of this product on the medical portfolio is great and it creates jobs. All over America, they’re voting and they’re opening up new markets. I think the state borders will stay closed.

But I do think there’s a future for this product. The fear mongers will lose.

People are getting better because of this drug…beating cancer, beating depression.

CVN: Because banks adhere to federal regulations, banking has been difficult for California cannabis growers. What is the status of banking for your business?

HB: We have found a bank where the costing is in line with normal accounts, so we can make [cannabis business] deposits. A lot of sales are done by wire transfers and checks, and in the past we were not able to take those because they were clear cannabis companies and our bank would have gotten upset.

CVN: As cannabis cultivators grow more and more product, they’re going to need to grow a customer base. How do you

respond to criticisms that the industry will start to target children?

HB: Yes, that’s a big concern for me. I don’t want that. Right now, it’s not possible for that to happen unless someone 21 or over buys my product and gives it to a child. Clearly my market is not children.

What we go after is people ages 30 to 60 and over, and women, especially.

CVN: It seems like you’ve come a long way — from reluctance to growing medical marijuana to a leader in medical- and recreational-use cannabis cultivation.

Do you think cannabis cultivation is here to stay in the Carpinteria Valley?

HB: The benefits if this industry being here will outweigh everything. Crime is down and housing is up.

These greenhouses are so clean, it’s crazy how clean they are. My farm is so clean that I brought someone out to look at our avocados and test them for pesticide contaminants. She said, “No, there’s nothing there. Everything is clean.” I think [cannabis cultivation] is a good influence to growing. It’s a positive thing.

They hated me when I grew flowers.

People complained about the trucks; they said the greenhouses were ugly. We used to light up this town at night with lights to grow chrysanthemums and other flowers.

Everyone complained. This is just a new fight. Now it’s dark at night.

State cannabis cultivation licenses from the California Department of Food and Agriculture are displayed throughout the facility.

All farming, trimming and packaging are done by hand at Autumn Brands. Employees earn between $14 and $25 per hour.

Autumn Brands was the first company in Carpinteria to install the odor control system by Byers Scientific, now installed in at least 12 facilities in the valley. The Byers system runs 24/7 emitting a neutralizing agent which changes the chemical or molecular makeup into a neutral or odorless compound.

Cannabis flowers are weighed and packaged by hand. Product is then sold to a distributor in Colinga, California, where it will be quarantined.

An independent laboratory tests the product to ensure that all claims on the label are accurate. Only if all tests come back identical is the product released for sale.

COASTAL BUREAU OPERATIONS JULY 21 – JULY 27

Sunday, July 21

8:42 a.m. / Resisting Arrest / 400 block Calle Ocho

Deputies responded to a call about a man yelling. (The man was later determined to have been connected to two earlier calls.) The first call was about a fight brewing in the area of Concha Loma and the footbridge. When deputies arrived, the subjects had left the area.

The second call was to assist State Parks with contacting a man who was possibly under the influence, but the man fled to his residence on Calle Ocho. The man began walking around his neighborhood, yelling and screaming. Deputies contacted him in a shed area at an address on Calle Ocho. The man was highly agitated and not making sense. He kept going in and out of the shed where there were numerous tools. The man was told to sit down or relax several times, but he continued to speak in random thoughts.

As deputies attempted to detain him, the man became rigid and semi-combative.

He eventually became resistive and had to be forcibly taken to the ground and handcuffed. The man was placed in a Hobble restraint due to kicking at the deputies. Deputies and the man sustained minor scrapes and scratches. The man was charged with felony resisting, assault on a peace officer with injury and possession of paraphernalia.

4:07 p.m. / Missing At-Risk Adult / 600 block Linden Avenue

A man was reported missing and making suicidal statements. A ping was requested on the man’s phone, which directed deputies to a motel room. A search of the room did not locate the man, but the reporting party later stated the man was seen driving. His information was entered into a missing-persons database.

1:10 a.m. / Assault / 4900 block Carpinteria Avenue

A woman was arrested for assault after hitting the manager of a pub over the head with a bar stool during an altercation. The manager had told the woman to leave due to her level of intoxication, and she became irate. The manager sustained several lacerations on his head but declined medical attention.

Wednesday, July 24

3 p.m. / Found Property / 1000 block Casitas Pass Road

A thrift store reported that they found a pack of .45cal bullets. The bullets were booked for destruction at the Carpinteria Station.

11:16 p.m. / DUI / 3600 block Via Real

Responding to a “Be on the Lookout” for a possible DUI vehicle, a deputy saw a vehicle parked half-in/half-out of the roadway at a shop on Via Real. The solo female occupant was turned over to CHP for a DUI investigation.

8:05 a.m. / Vandalism / 2100 block Summerland Heights Lane

A home-owners’ association planted a tree in a common area and suspected that the resident who lived in front had removed the tree. A woman admitted to removing the tree, saying that the tree

had not been planted in a common area, and that she had a religious objection to the tree being planted in front of her home. The HOA wants her prosecuted for vandalism (to the tree). The case has been submitted to the DA’s office for review.

A cannabis facility reported that two employees stole marijuana plants. Video of the theft was available. Patrol will follow up.

Deputies responded to a shoplifting that had just occurred, and a sergeant located the suspects, a man and a woman, at the public restrooms at Linden and 5th Street. The supermarket manager signed a citizen’s arrest for the man for stealing cheese, lunch meat and soda. A records check showed that the woman had outstanding warrants for her arrest. They were both arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

8:10 p.m. / Cannabis Theft / 1600 block Cravens Lane

Two men who had been accused of stealing marijuana plants were identified on surveillance camera. The theft had been reported to deputies earlier, and when one of the men returned to the cannabis facility security staff called the Sheriff’s Office and the man was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

11:35 p.m. / Possession and Warrant Arrest / 5700 block Carpinteria Avenue

A man was contacted after he was involved in a verbal argument with a woman. The man was found to be in possession of a meth pipe with residue, and he also had an outstanding warrant from Ventura County. He was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

12:50 a.m. / Drug Use / 4900 block Carpinteria Avenue

During a bar check, deputies observed a man setting up lines of cocaine in the office of a local pub. The bartender was observed serving several intoxicated patrons and was intoxicated herself. The bar was shut down for the above violations.

While conducting a premise check of the parking lot, two men were observed asleep in their vehicle. One man held a meth pipe/bong in his lap. Both subjects woke up and failed to follow directions to stop reaching around the vehicle and into a backpack. Due to their actions, the men were held at gunpoint until additional units arrived. Meth, heroin, and paraphernalia were found in the vehicle, and both men were arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

A caller advised deputies that an intoxicated male in a white Toyota truck with a camper shell kept driving around the area. Upon arrival, deputies located a man and initiated a traffic enforcement stop. A strong odor of alcohol was immediately noticed, and an open container of 4850 A CARPINTERIA AVE. vodka was observed.

The man refused a Behind Rockwell field sobriety test but based Cleaners on observations he was taken into custody.

Carpinteria City Beach hosts regional lifeguard championships

Carpinteria City Beach shined bright as they hosted the California Surf Lifesaving Association’s (CSLSA) Regional Championships on Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27. The CSLSA boasts 30 chapters from up and down the state, all well-represented at the two-day event. This year was the first time that the city of Carpinteria staged the competition.

“I remember growing up as a kid, how fun regionals was my last year in junior guards and Santa Barbara hosted it,” said

Assistant Regional Coordinator Matt Organista. “And, I remember sitting in that (CSLSA) meeting, thinking ‘gosh, what could we do to host it.’” Organista, who at the time was the Aquatics Program Coordinator at the City Pool, got the greenlight from Parks and Recreation Director Matt Roberts and Junior Lifeguard Coordinator Leilanie Silva, and started to plan last October.

With the aid of a camping proposal to help accommodate the throngs of out-of-towners, and a corps of eager

volunteers, the event setup was in place by noon on Friday, ready for the day’s first competitions.

Local competitors fared well on the opening day, as Carpinteria High School undergrad Diesel Slade took first place in the Boys “A” Flags Competition, and another fellow Warrior Vincent Rinaldi took second. Liam Slade, 2019 CHS alum, finished second on Saturday in the U19 division with another CHS grad Wyatt Stevenson finishing first.

Natalie Torres, an instructor for the local

junior lifeguards, took fifth in the Flags competition on Saturday.

It was a successful event for the city and there’s a good possibility that the event will be back at Carpinteria’s City Beach in 2020, as municipalities chosen as hosts initially agree to a two-year commitment. “I know both days went smoothly with scheduling, logistics and with timing of events,” said Organista. Planning for the 2020 regionals will begin soon.

This summer, Mavericks Athletics hosted its fifth year of summer sports camps for Carpinteria youth. What began as a fun way to teach kids character through athletics has become a popular youth camp filled with active games, friendly competitions and tons of fun. Mavericks offered several different themed weeks this summer, including two weeks of basketball (their specialty), one week of soccer and one week of sports skills. “It’s pure fun and games from start to finish,” said Mavericks coach Ryan Reed.

Mavericks strives to keep everything they do affordable and available to all Carpinteria youth, whether for club basketball or summer camps. Mavericks assists players no matter their family’s financial position. Foster youth can attend all programs free.

October 2019 will mark Coastal View News’ 25th year of publishing—a milestone we reached thanks to the support of the community. Phoevermore: from family kitchen to family business CVN

TRADE SECRETS M E G A N WA L D R E P Many challenges can arise when turning a passion for cooking into a food business. Recipes you know and love suddenly become unfamiliar as you increase measurements and seasonings to prepare food for an audience too big to fit around the dinner table. The soup is traditionally served in a large bowl alongside fresh basil, jalapeños, crunchy bean sprouts, cilantro, hoisin sauce and siracha. Thai grew up in Vietnam and learned cooking methods through his mother’s homecooked meals. Melding that experience with techniques and tastes acquired from Vietnamese street food vendors, Thai and partner Pauline Tran opened Phoevermore to bring Vietnamese street food to 1017 Casitas Pass Road in Shepard Place Shops.

Every restaurant has its challenges, and creating a menu can be one of them.

To stand out, Thai and Tran decided to do things a little differently. “We focus on a small menu,” Thai said. “This strategy allows us to deliver high-quality foods with high consistency.” In addition to Phở, Phoevermore also has finger-foods such as Bánh khọt, a buttery bite size Vietnamese snack topped with shrimp, a variety of flavorful rice bowls, spring and egg rolls, and traditional coffee and teas.

Gluten free options are available, such as the inventive Phở burger which uses Phở rice noodles as the patty and every ingredient in the soup. Vegetarian meals are also prominent on the menu.

Breedlove – King

Heather Breedlove and Scott King, both of Carpinteria, were married in a private ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5, 2019. The wedding was officiated by Bob Patel. Breedlove, a veteran of UCSB, is the owner of Breedlove’s Boutique, and King is a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard. Parents of the bride are Marilyn and Dennis Koniecki, both deceased. The groom’s parents are Deborah and Larry King of Thousand Oaks.

Woodworth – Drain

Surrounded by close friends and family, Amy Woodworth and Matt Drain, both of Carpinteria, were married along Snake River in Swan Valley, Idaho, on July 21, 2019. Drain’s children, Kelsey Bender and Aaron Drain, officiated the wedding, and Woodworth’s sister, Lex McCarthy, was maid of honor.

The couple met at a dinner at the Castro House in 2017, “one of those first dates where five hours feels like five minutes,” said Drain. Woodworth and Drain expressed gratitude to their friends and family in Carpinteria, “for all of the love and support.” A reception will be held in Carpinteria in October.

Rotary youth address local club

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset invited their 2019 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) nominees/recipients to speak at the club meeting held on July 17. RYLA events are organized locally by Rotary clubs and districts for participants ages 14-30, and typically last three to 10 days. Events include presentations, activities and workshops covering a variety of topics. Participants are nominated by local Rotary clubs, and this year›s event was held in Ojai at Camp Ramah on April 1215. The local Rotary District (5240) is comprised of 72 independent local Rotary clubs spanning the Central Coast from San Luis Obispo to Agoura Hills, and as far inland as China Lake. Remembering the Lakota with CVN

Caroline Thompson and Steve Nicolaides visited Fort Robinson in Western Nebraska on a five-week road trip across Nevada, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada. They spent two weeks on an 18,000-acre cattle ranch in Ogalala, Nebraska. Fort Robinson is where Crazy Horse surrendered and was subsequently murdered during a scuffle with a guard.
