Consultants recommend Carpinteria and Montecito form new library district

A public webinar about the future of Carpinteria and Montecito branch libraries will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 5:30 p.m. During the webinar, library consulting firm MJ Gómez Associates will present the findings of its report that analyzes the current library funding and management structure and makes recommendations for how the two libraries should be funded and managed in the future.

The consultant’s recommendations are based on dozens of interviews with local community stakeholders, representatives from the Friends of the Carpinteria and Montecito branch libraries, and current and former elected officials. In conclusion, the consultants recommend “the City of Carpinteria and library supporters in Montecito to withdraw from Zone 1 and form a separate new library zone.”

The public can read the report and view the recorded presentation on the city of Carpinteria’s website. The webinar will be aired live on Carpinteria City Cable GATV 21. County seeks community feedback on cannabis business licenses

Seventy-two Covid-related deaths reported

On Aug. 11, Santa Barbara County reported 7,074 positive cases of Covid-19 since the county’s first reported infection in March. Over 310 cases are still classified as infectious countywide. Seventy-six people are currently hospitalized with 31 in the Intensive Care Unit. There have been 72 Covid-19 related deaths, with five identified as residents of the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria, where there have been 168 total confirmed cases thus far.

Adjustments made to Linden closure

The city has amended plans to close a portion of Linden Avenue to create a pedestrian area and allow businesses to temporarily expand their footprint. Taking into account feedback from businesses and the traffic flow complications created by the pavement repair project on 8th Street, the city has reduced the closed portion of Linden Avenue to the 600 block only. Businesses between 6th and 7th streets have the opportunity to temporarily expand their footprint while the roadway is closed to traffic. Paving work on 8th Street between Maple and Elm avenues is scheduled to be completed on Friday, Aug. 15, and the roadway will be reopened to traffic over the weekend.

Blakemore joins Architectural Review Board

Carpinteria resident and landscape architect Amy Blakemore was appointed to the Architectural Review Board by unanimous vote of the City Council on Aug. 10. The ARB consists of five members who are tasked with evaluating development proposals by interpreting architectural and landscaping drawings and considering the effects of proposed development upon surrounding areas. Blakemore has a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Cornell University and is the principal and owner of Greens Landscape Design. She brings extensive experience in construction and landscape architecture to the board, and she is a certified arborist.

60th Anniversary Michael and Laura Cleary were married on Aug. 13, 1960, at the Sacred Heart Church of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. It was the start of 60 wonderful years, said Michael, married to “the perfect girl.”

The Clearys moved to a Shepard Mesa home in Carpinteria 22 years ago, after Michael retired from the Boeing Company in Mesa, Arizona.

The Clearys have f o u r c h i l dre n , f i ve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The county of Santa Barbara hosted six virtual community meetings in July to receive feedback and answer questions about the amended Cannabis Business License (Chapter 50) regulating cannabis retail storefront licensing in the county, including the Toro Canyon and Summerland area.

Before the Board of Supervisors meets on Aug.18, county staff is seeking additional feedback via a survey with an interactive map about what might constitute community benefit and compatibility for the Neighborhood Compatibility scoresheet.

Comment period for logging project to close Aug. 14

The public comment period on the Forest Service’s proposal to log trees and grind up chaparral along six miles of the prominent ridge known as Pine Mountain, deep in the Ventura County backcountry, will close on Aug. 14.

Local tribal groups, businesses, elected representatives and members of the public, from Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, and beyond, have submitted over 10,000 comments to the Forest Service opposing its proposal to remove old-growth trees and chaparral across 755 acres—the equivalent of 575 American football fields—without an environmental assessment, according to the nonprofit Los Padres ForestWatch.

Concerns include the avoidance of appropriate environmental study and examination of alternatives normally required for such projects under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), disturbance of cultural sites, damage caused to a much-loved recreation area, impacts to sensitive plant and animal species, increased wildfire risks, weakening of the forest’s ability to adapt to climate change, and the possibility that the project will be conducted by a commercial logging company.

Nearly 70 environmental and social justice organizations have signed a letter challenging the Forest Service’s lack of collaboration and the skirting of NEPA studies.

The letter also questions the efficacy of remote vegetation clearing to protect distant communities from wildfire.

“Our primary concern is the project’s lack of attention and near total insensitivity to the potential impact to Chumash cultural values and resources,” wrote Julie Tumamait-Stenslie, Chair of the Barbareno/Ventura Band of Mission Indians.

“Much of the project area is in its natural state, evolved over time without the disturbance of heavy modern machinery. Once trees are cut and the landscape is scarred by a project like this, the wilderness quality of the place is ruined,” said ForestWatch advocacy director Rebecca August. “We hope that those who have not yet spoken make their voices heard before it’s too late.”

McLoughlin – Batastini

Luisa and Dennis McLoughlin of Carpinteria are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Asia McLaughlin of Carpinteria to Nicholas Batastini of Santa Barbara. The groomelect’s parents are Barbara and Victor Batastini of Santa Barbara.

After graduating from the Cate School in 2005, Asia attended the University of Southern California where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations & Cinema-Television in 2009.

She then studied at Columbia University in the city of New York where she completed a Master in International Affairs, International Finance & Economic Policy in 2015. She is currently employed at the International Justice Mission, a nonprofit protecting people in poverty from violence.

Nicholas attended Bishop Garcia Diego High School, graduating in 2003, before attending Western Washington Universi-

ty where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 2018. Nicholas is currently employed at Santa Barbara Sand and Topsoil, his family’s business, which supplies Santa Barbara County with aggregate building material since 1910.

The wedding will take place at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Montecito.

Obituaries

Chad Johnson 1/6/1921 – 8/9/2020

Chad Johnson, age 99, passed away in Palm Desert, California, on Aug. 9, 2020, after a short battle with melanoma.

Chad was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on Jan. 6, 1921. His family moved to California in 1933 and settled in Hollywood, where he graduated from Hollywood High School in 1939, and he was enrolled in the ROTC program while in high school. In 1942, Chad enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was discharged in 1946. He moved to Burbank, California and opened an auto repair business, where he remained until the late 1980s.

Chad and his wife Jean moved to Rancho Mirage in 1989 to Sunrise Country Club, but their summers were spent in Carpinteria, California.

Chad’s mission in life was to be helpful to others, be it family, friends or strangers.

Though he dearly loved his family and home, the “garage” was also an important part of his life. He could usually be found tinkering with a car, golf cart, building a cabinet or repairing a broken chair, or helping others with a computer problem.

In 2014, Chad moved into a retirement facility in Palm Desert, California, “The Fountains at the Carlotta,” where he spent the remainder of his life.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Jean; daughter Sue Thomson; granddaughter Renee Lawson (Mike); three bonus sons, Steve Blevens, Scott Blevens and Christopher Blevens (deceased); grandson Jess Blevens (Shauna); granddaughters Dawn (deceased), Summer and Kylie; and three great-granddaughters Kate, Shelby and Brooke. His son David preceded him in death.

At his request, no services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Rotary Club of Carpinteria would be most appreciated.

Felipe Arroyo

Felipe Arroyo, who was best known for riding around in his eye-catching bicycle, passed away on Aug. 8, 2020. He will be missed dearly by his friends and family.

He will be put to rest in La Colonia Magania, Michoacan, Mexico.

Richard Charles Bendel, Jr. 10/25/44 – 7/30/20

With a rare combination of traits like no other, Dick was tall, strong, handsome, loving, generous, adventurous, and kind.

In the last 5 days people have remembered his humility, his wonderfully shy sense of humor, his endless helpfulness, his love of football, and his love of chocolate…

Born to Richard and Mildred Bendel in Middletown OH, Dick was a 4th generation contractor with his own small business for over 40 years. His son, Daniel Bendel, worked first with him, and now has his own business in Oklahoma City as a 5th generation contractor. Ever industrious, Dick never stopped building, fixing, and creating both at home and for friends.

He and his wife, Melinda Novinger Bendel, an ESL teacher originally from Chicago, married on 8/19/89 and had nearly 32 unforgettable years together.

They adored traveling in the last 20 years both on European land tours and on nearly 60 cruises, being fortunate enough to visit over 50 countries. They built and/or remodeled 3 homes together and were an utterly devoted, loving couple who loved to laugh, dance, have parties, and spend time with dear family and friends.

After 40+ years in San Diego, where they met when he remodeled her house, they moved to Carpinteria CA, both to downsize and to be close to daughter Dana and 3 of their grandchildren. A wonderful father, in addition to his wife, he leaves behind children Daniel Bendel, Beth Rice, and Kristie Reden; step-children Carson Green, Dana Zertuche, and Ramsey Green; the children’s spouses; 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; brothers Fred, Joe, and John Bendel, and sister Ginny Draa.

In the Army, Dick was sent to Vietnam where he served as a surveyor. There he was exposed to Agent Orange, which, as it did for many others, later led to Parkinson’s Disease. He endured that for nearly 12 years. He spent his last 7 1/2 weeks in a “safe” senior facility where COVID-19 managed to creep in and was more than he could survive.

His deeply saddened wife and family will never forget his loyal, supportive, uncomplicated, heroic and loving self, and, of course, his unending love for chocolate…. He will leave this earth with 3 of his favorite chocolate bars in one hand, and with a construction pencil and an American flag in the other.

Donations in his honor may be made to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes), Special Olympics, or the Wounded Warrior Project. Due to the pandemic, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Josephine Razo 4/16/1928 – 8/6/2020

Josephine “Bebe” Razo passed away Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020. She was 92 years old. She was born and raised in Carpinteria, California.

On April 16, 1928, she entered this world and joined her parents Jesus Maria Sanchez and Raphaela Romero. She was dedicated to her mother and father, taking care of them into their old age.

Family was very important to her. She was number five of nine children and was the last living sibling.

She was married to Nicholas Razo and they raised their family on 9th Street in Carpinteria. Josephine and Nick were together for over 50 years before he passed away in 2002. During her life, in addition to raising children, she worked at the Carpinteria lemon packing house.

Josephine soaked up all the joy that life had to offer. She was a great cook, one of her specialties was Indian fried bread. She loved to shop, whether it be out and about or on QVC. Known as a bit of a tom-boy, she loved sports, and even played baseball. Valuing physical fitness, she could always be found either on her treadmill or jumping rope on her front porch. She loved her telenovelas. Walking into her house you could count on her “stories” playing in the background. She was also musically inclined, playing worship songs on the omni chord for many years with her good friend Norma. Josephine was known as a hospitable host. Welcoming all to her home, offering a kind ear.

She was always available to listen and give advice.

As a breast cancer survivor, she showed her true strength and courage. She battled the disease and beat it with her feistiness, strong sense of faith, and her ever present attitude of never giving up.

Towards the end of her life, Josephine suffered from dementia. Even though she forgot details of her full life, if reminded, you could see a spark in her eyes and warm memories flash across her face.

Josephine is survived by her children James, Ronnie and Marky; their spouses Sylvia and Lori; and her grandchildren James Jr., Maria, Nicole, Ron Jr., Reyna, Josiana, Shelly, Nick, Mark Jr., Bekah, Wally, Roseanna and Monica. She had numerous step- grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Teresa and her grandsons Georgie and Joey.

Sylvia Brickley Weller 1925 – 2020

Long-time Santa Barbara resident, Sylvia Brickley Weller, mother of Mark Paul Brickley, Elizabeth (Betsy) Read Brickley-Adams, mother-in-law of Patrick T. Adams, and grandmother of Jackson Adams and Sturdy Adams, has died of natural causes.

Sylvia’s paternal grandparents were Elsa Meyer and Heinrich Volkmann, she a concert pianist and he a transportation chief for the German rail system, honored

by Kaiser Wilhelm, the last king of Germany, for his achievements. Her maternal grandparents, Frederick Nash Read of Virginia and Louise Ludlow Bryant of Ludlow, Kentucky, were descended from early families of this country. Her parents were Dorothy Read and Erich Volkmann.

Her father graduated from the University of Heidelberg and emigrated before the two World Wars.

Sylvia attended Katherine Gibbs and held positions at Brown University, The Ringling Hotel in Sarasota, The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and J. Walter Thompson in New York City. She married Paul Brickley of Minnesota, and their children were born in Rochester, where Dr. Brickley was a member of the Mayo Clinic Staff. In 1954, the family moved to Santa Barbara, and Dr. Brickley affiliated with the Sansum Clinic in the practice of Ophthalmology.

Following her husband’s death, Sylvia attended Santa Barbara City College and UCSB, graduating with honors in English in 1971. She joined Arthur Bromfield’s real estate office in Montecito (Sears) and combined real estate sales, travel and writing, and had a great life, by her own admission.

In 1990, she married LeRoy Weller and lived on the beach in Carpinteria until his death in 2000. Together they cruised the globe.

She was active in several community organizations, including the Junior League and the Lobero Theater and three local private clubs. She enjoyed bridge and three reading clubs, and the rich variety of arts this community offers. With a Pat McClure-led group at All Saints by the Sea, she explored evolving trends in Christian theology as it responds to advances in neurology and physics.

If she were writing this herself (she is) she would say that among the many gifts of this life, her loving children Elizabeth (Betsy) and Mark, grandsons Jackson and Sturdy, son-in-law Patrick, and those friends who helped her laugh and who nurtured her spirit top the list. So long, all dear ones, “I wait at the Gate.”

In lieu of flowers, consider contributing to All Saints by the Sea, The Lobero Theater, Sansum Clinic Research, and City College—all were part of her life.

She was interested in a book fund for single mothers at City College, which the Foundation for SBCC’s CARE program supports.

A celebration of Sylvia’s life will be held when family and friends are able to gather.

Don’t mess with USPS

George Washington appointed the first Postmaster General in 1789. From the Pony Express (1860) to free delivery (1865), penny postcards, V-mail in wartime and airmail, etc. we have all benefited from the US Postal Service, which is listed as an independent agency in our Constitution.

On June 15, 2020, Louis DeJoy, a North Carolina businessman and major contributor to the Trump campaign was named Postmaster General. Since then, postal employees have stated that instead of working to get the mail out as quickly and efficiently as possible, they have been ordered to leave mail undelivered, in effect, to create a backlog and slowdown delivery.

Due to the crises of the Covid-19 pandemic and the decline in the use of firstclass mail, Federal funding has become crucial to keeping the Post Offices open.

We can argue whether or not cronyism and politics have been weaponized in an attempt to affect the November elections outcome by calling into question mail-in ballots that are not received “on time,” but the result of mail delays is what is important now.

My sister-in-law, a retired 30-year postal employee has been contacted by friends, neighbors and residents she interacted with and often aided on her mail route. They are concerned and have already experienced delays in both pickup and delivery of time-sensitive mail.

Think of the effect of this on people all over the United States who receive necessary funds, medical supplies and pay bills through the mail. It is imperative to all of us who rely on the Post Office to voice our opinion to keep this essential service out of politics and operating at the level we deserve and have come to expect.

We must value nature

The impact of the pandemic on our leisure time was addressed in an interview last week (CVN, Vol. 26, No. 46) with Matt Roberts, director of the city of Carpinteria Department of Parks and Recreation.

It is admirable that he linked the pandemic to many recent disasters. But the pandemic was in fact predicted, as was climate change—another disaster that is currently underway and is exacerbated by unnecessary development and deforestation, such as removing 58 trees for a skate park.

Those 58 trees, humble though they appear, give great value. They provide roosting sites for hundreds of birds and the struggling monarch butterflies; they lend shade and shelter to squirrels and raccoons and they benefit the soils of the bluffs by easing the assault of winds and the erosion of water.

Each of these fulfill a role in nature.

They pollinate our food, keep insects and rodents in balance, and act as one holdfast against the ravages that are annihilating one billion species of plants and animals within just a few decades.

All of these servants in nature are in turn experiencing a changing climate.

And in metaphorical terms, they know the world is rapidly changing. There is no leisure time. In the moments that a butterfly is alive it migrates from one end of the continent to the other, only to find the trees have vanished.

That fragile butterfly can enrich our lives with its beauty while it strives to do nature’s bidding. That bird can provide us with song, and sheer wonder. These are the wholesome pleasures in life—free and as inextricably tied as nature itself.

All we must do is hold our elected officials, and ourselves, to the task of valuing this planet.

What comes next after Multicultural Literature?

BY DIVERSIFY OUR NARRATIVE CARPINTERIA

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, we began a local chapter of Diversify Our Narrative (DON) to create positive, systemic change in our schools and diversify our curriculum. The multicultural literature course for Carpinteria High School seniors is a start, but how can we continue to give our children and future students representation in our curriculum?

We are grateful for the unanimous decision for the implementation of Multicultural Literature at Carpinteria High School. Moving forward, we hope this movement is led by students of DON in collaboration with the school board and CUSD staff. As young adults in this community, we have experienced firsthand the lack of representation not just at the high school level, but through all CUSD campuses. Our mission is to start honest conversations on all CUSD campuses by introducing students to diverse texts.

Open dialogue about race, culture and representation can be uncomfortable for some, especially those who don’t experience racism. But through these conversations, we are able to better understand each other and how our school system can equitably cater to all of its students. For example, conversations about Columbus, should be balanced with conversations about Indigenous people. If we are taught about segregation in the South, we should also learn about Carpinteria’s history of segregation. This is especially important due to our local segregation of elementary schools that did not end until 1947.

Carpinteria is not exempt from analyzing the role we played in upholding systemic racism.

Additionally, we need input from our students, staff, and parents of color. White allies are important, but we must acknowledge that the perspective of a person of color is shaped by our individual experiences, a byproduct of systemic racism, and is vastly different from a white person with white privilege.

White privilege is not inherently bad, but those who benefit from it will not fully understand the gravity of racism. This is essential in finding a solution to represent

We plan to continue our work and extend this initiative to the elementary, middle and high schools. We are currently working alongside Carpinteria Middle School administrators, parents and teachers to improve BIPOC representation in the curriculum. The cycle of shame and self-hatred can be prevented if children of color see themselves reflected in our curriculum and learn about systemic racism at an early age. White students will be introduced to diverse cultures, uplift marginalized voices and hold themselves accountable.

California Avocado Festival booth at the

Avofest unveils 2020 poster design

“The design is all Carpinteria,” said Evangelina Cervera, winner of this year’s California Avocado Festival poster contest, “it’s a town that has sea, mountains, sun and fields.” Not to mention the avocado prominently placed in the poster’s center.

Cervera is on a roll with avocado-themed designs. She won the Avofest poster contest two years ago as well. “My last poster was inspired by the colors of Carpinteria. This one I wanted to be even more colorful, so you can see it and just feel happy,” said Cervera, “We need bright colors because this year has been so stressful.”

Originally from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, Cervera moved to Carpinteria in 2016. She has worked as a graphic designer for newspapers and educational materials. Backyard Bugs: The Art of Pollination

Roundup at garden and hardware stores) kill the flowering plants pollinators rely on for food. New peer-reviewed research published in 2019 highlights that more than 40 percent of insect species are declining, with over one-third endangered.

Since humans rely so strongly upon pollinator services for the food we eat and the natural ecosystems we love, these statistics are deeply troubling. A lot has to change quickly in order to reverse these steep declines, and it is essential that we do so, both for our own survival and for the sake of the other-than-human world.

Consider supplementing your landscape with native plants, which bloom year-round with limited irrigation and are an essential food for native pollinators. Limit your use of household chemicals and support gardening and farming practices that do as well with your patronage at the grocery store or farmers’ market. Leave corners of your garden messy—lots of insects, including native bees and moths, prefer to lay eggs and overwinter in dark and protected places with leaf litter and dry wood. While there are many native bee homes on the market, you can do just as well with a stacked wood pile and some bare dirt for bees that prefer to dig underground homes in exposed soil.

One of my favorite resources to learn more about the vast world of invertebrates and how to support their well-being is the Xerces Society, a non-profit dedicated to invertebrate conservation with many incredible resources freely available on their website, xerces.org.

EXPLORING THE VALLEY’S WILD AND CULTIVATED SPACES

ALENA STEEN High summer in the Carpinteria Garden Park is a riot of color and fragrance.

Orange squash blossoms bigger than your hand peak out from the foliage of climbing scarlet runner beans with brilliant white and red flowers. Headhigh sunflowers twist in the breeze and multi-colored zinnias bloom vigorously, welcome weeds from our homemade compost. Tomato flowers are much more discrete: you have to look closely to spot the small, yellow blooms hidden in the vines. In the wild edges of the garden, landscaped primarily with native plants, fragrant California wild rose is covered in delicate pink flowers and brilliant red rose hips, an important food for many birds and small animals.

Everywhere is the low, steady hum of happy insects crawling over the flowers of fruit trees, vegetables, herbs, and native plants, providing their essential service of pollination. Pollination is mostly performed by insects, including butterflies, night-flying moths, bees, and wasps. Bats and birds are also adept pollinators, able to fit into larger and more open-faced flowers. On the North American continent alone, there are more than 4,000 species of native bees who pollinate both agricultural and wild ecosystems.

Pollinators have found the garden of their own accord. Monarch butterflies are attracted to their primary food plant, the native narrowleaf milkweed. Bumble bees visit native plant species such as white sage, sacred datura, grindelia and goldenrod. The community garden is also home to four European honeybee hives cared for by a dedicated garden member.

Pollination is essential to the existence of our species, since pollinated flowers become the fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds that are the root of a healthy diet.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, three out of every four food crops (including 87 of the leading food crops worldwide) rely on pollination to produce the food we eat.

Floral evolution has designed myriad tools to lure pollinators in for the essential business of fertilization: intoxicating fragrance, bright colors and even ultraviolet markings invisible to the human eye that visually signal bees. These complex, reciprocal relationships developed over tens of thousands of years. Some plants

Many insect species will spend their entire life cycle—from egg to instar to breeding adult—on one plant species, while more cosmopolitan insects find food and shelter wherever they range.

Regardless, the relationships between insects and plants are essential for the survival of entire ecosystems, as well as our own food supply.

These relationships are more threatened than ever before. Human-caused climate disruption and habitat loss are incredibly damaging to the nuanced co-evolution of plants and pollinators.

Fresh produce, easy to come by

MADE IN CARPINTERIA B R E N D A TA N Did you know that Summerland is classified as a food desert? According to Leslie Person Ryan, owner of Sweet Wheel Farm, “the last grocery store closed down six years ago. Our only local access to food is either from a convenience store or fried. This coupled with low income creates the food desert.” Ryan set up a produce cart to help increase access to fresh, organic food in Summerland.

In 2017, Ryan started the produce cart by partnering with local farms after the Thomas Fire and subsequent debris flows closed off the freeway in both directions, leaving Summerland landlocked. No phone, TV, internet or potable water— and no grocery store. “We were trapped,” said Ryan. “During this time, a woman told me that she got into a fight with another woman over what she deemed ‘the last stale sandwich.’”

Arriving amidst a food shortage, Sweet Wheel Farm donated food to the Free Veterans’ breakfast at the Memorial Building. Since then, they have continued to donate food locally. “Right now, we donate artichokes to Sarah House,” said Ryan. “We came here to solve the food shortage, and we will always give to those in need of food.”

Ryan’s passion for farming came from her upbringing. “My parents were farmers, so I grew up on 1,000 acres of lemons,” she said. “Sometimes when my father came back from work, he would put me on his motorcycle, and we’d ride over the irrigation ditches. I associate those memories with a sense of freedom, and that feeling has driven me in my own career. I wanted to give my own kids that same experience when they grew up.”

Ryan fulfilled her dream to become a farmer, however she did so in her own, often unconventional, way. “I used to own an orange ranch down in Pauma Valley in San Diego. When I made the transition to organic farming, the ranch manager told me I was crazy because ‘no one grows organic.’ Now around 90 percent of the Valley is doing organic.”

For Ryan, a huge benefit of eating organic is omitting an excess consumption of pesticides. “When you use pesticides, you kill the good insects along with the bad ones. We need to pay attention to what is going on in our bodies and what we are putting in them. And I don’t want my kids to get cancer.”

Sweet Wheel Farm is also dedicated to representing women in farming. “Women are underrepresented in farming,” noted Ryan. “Oftentimes, women get into farming when they marry a farmer, and even then, she is usually relegated to selling and keeping the books. As a female farmer, many of my male colleagues often question what I am doing in their field.”

Ryan strives to surpass this bias by instilling her female coworkers with a sense of empowerment. She remarked, “it just happened to be that most of my crew ended up being female. It was remarkable when I heard my girls say, ‘girl power.’

It’s not for the faint of heart! I like to make sure that I’m strong and that I feel strong. All my girls are required to do at least one day of educational labor on the

farm so that they can fully appreciate all farmworkers. But none of them ever complain, if anything they are always happy to be there.”

When a customer calls to ask for an organic baby food recipe, Ryan also tells her about a nearby winery that are growing edible strawberries. The farm stand offers an assortment of preservatives and fresh baked goods all made from organic produce, much of which they grow themselves. In her backyard, Ryan is growing a number of produce new to California soil such as tropical fruits like pineapples and mangoes. For Ryan, farming is not only a career, but an approach to life. “I like to grow unusual things, something different.”

Ryan is also the founder of the nonprofit Santa Barbara Agricultural Foundation which aims to teach kids to grow their own fruit.

This summer was like no other for FFA students who typically raise their farm animals in the Carpinteria High School barn. When Covid-19 closed school property to students, these resourceful teenagers built improvised facilities on local family farms to keep their program running. As the summer winds down, students are preparing to sell their animals at the Ventura County Fair’s online auction where most will take home a small profit for their effort.

“We’ve had a great summer,” said Sal Lopez, CHS teacher and FFA program director. “We’ve made a lot of great memories and we’ve shown that students are learning life skills in their ag classes. These facilities were built and maintained by students, from plumbing, to cementing, to posting, we’ve shown that students are learning real life skills in our program.”

Stepping into the digital stew

“What’s important in shaping and Instagram selfrepresentation, I think, is recognizing one’s influences and the reasons one makes the boards he or she makes.”

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH Instagram is my digital drug of choice (@christianbeamish—hit me!) and a surfboard I made was recently featured in a funny post by @jonathanwaynefreeman, a guy with a huge number of followers.

His online performances are absurd and hilarious as he slips in and out of alter-egos with a convincingly tenuous hold on his mental health. The post wasn’t so much about the virtues of the particular design I’d shaped, as much as it was about Freeman acting the part of a way too self-involved surfer obsessing over his board. Most of the comments were in reaction to his crescendo line: “What am I on? I’m on my own trip…”

(Imagine the gravelly drawl, the insouciant California surfer absorbed in the glory of himself—you’ve met this guy, no?)

I commented on his post as well, writing his finishing line about “on my own trip” not to suggest that that’s what I believe about myself, but to highlight the silliness of Freeman’s act. But one comment, by a man who moves in the higher echelons of surfing culture, gave me a sting. He wrote: “If Skip Frye was a gunslinger, there would be a whole lot of dead copy cats out there.” I’ll unpack this Skip Frye/copycat business in a moment, but first I’ll say that the commenter is a friend of mine and I generally enjoy his sharp repartee, particularly when he’s taking down the pompous and the foolish. It may well be that I too am pompous and foolish—after all, here I am, in yet another monthly column, diving into the minutiae of my passing fancies. (That should have been the title of this column: “Passing Fancies”!)

Now, on to Skip Frye—arguably the patron saint of San Diego surfing. My buddy is right about Skip being copied by thousands of guys like me with a planer, 75 bucks for a blank to shape and an Instagram account. And it is galling when someone appears to jump into the spotlight on Instagram, proclaiming membership in a club they have not been invited to join. I suppose I am one of those guys, judging by my audacity to weekly post the boards I shape, pulled from any number of unattributed influences. On the other hand, I’ve surfed with Skip Frye in the Outer Hebrides, talked boards and ridden his designs with him, and in that experience, I have been directly influenced by him.

Anyway, maybe I just needed something to kvetch about this week—the column is due after all! But it’s the notion of attribution and self-aggrandizement that has me thinking. I mean, thanks Scott, for keeping me honest, but if we’re talking gunslingers and dead copycats there is a long list of shapers and designers that went into the board that served as a prop in Jonathan Wayne Freeman’s clip that, like Skip Frye, didn’t get a mention.

The line-of-influence goes (probably with some omissions): John Kelly, Wally Froiseth, Fran Heath, George Downing, Bob Simmons, Pat Curren, Mike Diffenderfer, George Greenough, Allan Byrne, Hamish Graham, Mark Richards, Greg Pautsch and Simon Jones. I have only known four of those surfers personally, and a couple of them passed before my time, but my dad knew the others and told me of their exploits on surf trips up and down the California coast. I suppose the trouble came when I wrote “I’m on my own trip,” as if I didn’t recognize that Skip Frye and others had been making the style of board Freeman referenced long before I began working at being a shaper—but that’s not what I meant.

What’s important in shaping and Instagram self-representation, I think, is recognizing one’s influences and the reasons one makes the boards he or she makes. As for the would-be shapers “proclaiming membership in a club they have not been invited to join,” what does it matter how they portray themselves?

ed access to the sport of kings? The only thing that matters is integrity, and that is something that gets sorted out over time.

As the Psalmist wrote in Psalm One (Vs. 3 and 4): “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.”

“Ungodly” is a pretty heavy call, and I’ll leave it to a higher authority to define that one, but the part about the “chaff which the wind driveth away”—that’s a solid analogy. Surfing for me these days comes in fleeting snippets when I can steal an hour from parenting and work on a coast that requires tide and swell synchronicity. In other words, it all has to line up. What I’ve taken to doing is planning out a week-long trip a season ahead of time and preparing to cut-out when the conditions come together. Also, I recently shaped a nearly 12-foot-long board in the Heath-Kelly-Froiseth-Downing tradition to glide on tiny summertime waves. It’s all surfing after all… (and passing fancies)!

Deputies later saw the suspect driving his vehicle north on Linden Avenue. Deputies arrested the suspect for the violation of the restraining order and his vehicle was towed by Holzer’s Towing.

Deputies contacted a man sitting in his vehicle with a needle in his hand about to inject himself. Needles were seen in plain view and a search was conducted. Deputies located heroin and the man was cited.

A café called about two transients disturbing the peace and refusing to leave. Upon arrival, deputies contacted two men. During a consent search of their backpacks, open alcohol containers were located in a backpack and a citation was issued.

A man was observed speeding through the construction zone on Hwy 101. Deputies followed him and initiated a stop on Via Real. The man was found in possession of two meth pipes, and one had a usable amount in the bowl. The man’s license status was also suspended, a second time in recent weeks. He was cited and his truck was towed, again.

7:47 a.m. / Narcotics Violation / Sandyland Cove and Carpinteria Avenue

An unknown subject used a rock to smash the window of one vehicle and scrape the roof of a second vehicle, causing approximately $3,600 in damage.

A man and a passenger were contacted in a parked vehicle. During a consent search of the vehicle, deputies found usable quantities of heroin, two used glass pipes with narcotics residue inside and prescription pills that were not prescribed to either of them. One of the men said everything belonged to him and he was cited.

A man was contacted for trespassing and violating a served criminal protective order. He was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail for violation of a court order and trespassing.

A caller said that when he returned from the hospital to get his truck from a motel parking lot, it was gone.

2:39 p.m. / Under the Influence / 4000 block Via Real

A deputy contacted two men sitting in a parked truck at the “Thunder bowl” (Carpinteria Avenue at Highway 150).

While talking to the occupants, the deputy noticed a fanny pack hanging from the inside of the front bumper. When the deputy asked them what was in the fanny pack, one of the men said “Paraphernalia.” The man also had a parole warrant out for his arrest. Deputies found one oz. of methamphetamine, a digital scale, syringes and baggies inside. When the parolee was processed at the jail, correction deputies located additional contraband hidden in his socks, and additional charges were added to his booking.

Deputies were dispatched to Via Real for a report of a black sedan that was occupied by the driver only who appeared under the influence. Upon arrival, deputies contacted the driver who had been driving the vehicle. The man was arrested and taken to Santa Barbara County Jail after blowing a 4.4 BAC two times.

School Integration 1947

Schools in California were integrated by law starting in the fall of 1947. The court ruling in Mendes vs. Westminster of Orange County on April 14, 1947, declared that children in “Mexican Schools” were being denied access to social equality which was unconstitutional and unlawful.

Carpinteria schools had actually begun the process of integration a year earlier by semi-integrating the 1946 kindergarten class at Carpinteria’s Mexican school, Aliso. One such “white” participant remembers school superintendent and principal of both Aliso and Main elementary schools, Frank Wykoff, persuading his father to have him attend Aliso. The student cited here was John Rodriguez, Jr., a freckled, fair-complexioned lad of Hispanic descent, one of the children of the Californios who helped settle Carpinteria in its earliest years. A close look at Aliso’s kindergarten class of ’46-47 shows a number of children like Rodriguez, tow-headed Latinos sprinkled into the mix. Perhaps Wykoff had to get the look of integration established before its actualization.

The following year, 1947-48, all classes and schools in Carpinteria were integrated. Kindergarten classes were at Main School, along with the fifth through eighth grades. All first through fourth grades were assigned to Aliso School.

Aliso had a cafeteria added to its campus to match the one at Main to accommodate the change. Carpinterian Marty Panizzon remembers shifting over to Aliso from Main for his fourth grade school year.

He says, “I was scared. There were some ‘pachucos’ there, bullies. Games on the playground, sometimes, were rough.

But, I ended up making many friends at Aliso, for life.”

Kindergarten teacher, Rebecca Lee, coming over from Aliso to Main had this to say, “We have been moved over to the big school, which has been a joy to all of us. We have so much more room, and the school ground apparatus to play on.” Today, it’s hard to think of Main as the “big” school! The reason given for its closure at the end of the 2007 school year by the Carpinteria School Board was that it was too small in comparison to the Aliso and Canalino elementary schools.

Its students could easily be absorbed by them. Today the Carpinteria Children’s Project has taken its place on 8th Street.

The 1947-48 schoolyear of integration in Carpinteria was considered a grand success. Lorenzo Del Armi was an eighthgrade teacher that year at Main. He recalled it as one of the most rewarding learning experiences of his professional career. Dr. Del Armi would go on to become the president/superintendent of Santa Barbara City College, then superintendent of Santa Barbara County Schools. Superintendent and Principal Wykoff wrote in the 1948 “La Revista” yearbook for Aliso and Main students, as follows, “If nations could only exhibit the same ability to better understand and appreciate the principles and ideals of others that you have demonstrated, especially in this last year, they would be well on the way to achieve world peace.”

The first integrated kindergarten classrooms of 1947-48 saw 43 of its students attend Carpinteria schools through 12th grade, says Joe Gonzalez, Class of 1960.

“We were a giant family, with some rather gifted individuals in the racial mix.” A number of the Mexican-American children made notable social class jumps.

This included Dr. Gonzalez himself, a university professor and Fulbright Scholar; Dan Rodriguez, Lt. Colonel in the U. S. Marine Corps; Tomás Castelo, Santa Barbara Attorney-at-Law; and Leo Martinez, Santa Barbara City Councilman (1973-77), who in 2015 helped secure city council district elections in Santa Barbara.

Thinking back on the rationale for the 1947 Westminster court case decision, one might ask, was their achievement happenstance, or the logical conclusion of integregated classes and schools?

Out with the old… safely

Since the stay at home orders went into effect, our waste stream has changed.

Commercial waste has been greatly reduced, while the residential waste stream is up. And what is in our bins has also changed. It is not surprising that the amount of cardboard in residential recycling bins had greatly increased.

With so many stores closed and people wanting to avoid exposure to possible illness, households are having more of their items shipped than ever before. The amount of green waste in the residential waste stream is also higher than ever. Like many, I too have been doing yard projects and clearing out old vegetation.

When clearing out closets, sheds and garages we often come across long forgotten items. I live in an old house and years ago while cleaning out the attic I came across buckets of paint that had obviously been there for many years.

Finding items that are hard to identify means it can be more difficult to dispose of them. For example, paints that do not have labels cannot be recycled at an ABOP (antifreeze, battery, oil, paint) disposal center and instead must be taken to an approved hazardous waste disposal event.

And those mystery chemicals found at the back of your garage should definitely be carefully and properly disposed of.

Whenever you are clearing out a space—whether it is the garage, the bedroom closet or even the yard—you may come across a lot of things you don’t have a use for anymore. Many of those items can be reused or recycled. Even while many things are closed, it is still fairly easy to donate or consign those nice clothes that you just don’t wear anymore.

Many local donation services make things very easy for you by offering at-home pickup (just be sure to check their websites for their current requirements).

It is also a great time to begin using more environmentally friendly household products. Everyone uses cleaning products around the house. The California Green Business Network (greenbusinessca.org) and the Environmental Working Group (ewg.org) both offer great recommendations for environmentally preferable cleaning products that offer the same cleaning power of things you might be using now. Many common household items such as white vinegar, baking soda and lemon, may also be used in place of more toxic cleaning products. But if you do have old cleaning supplies you want to get rid of, a local household hazardous waste day is a good place to take them. Many household cleaners contain items that are toxic to the environment and shouldn’t be put in the regular trash or dumped into the sewer system. The same is true of pesticides, herbicides and automotive fluids.

Old medications often turn up in home cleanings, and these should never be tossed in the trash or down the drain.

Instead, they should be dropped off at an approved take-back program. Fortunately, we have several convenient locations in Carpinteria. Shopping at Albertsons or CVS? Their pharmacies take old medications. Both Med Project (med-project. org) and the California Drug Take-Back Program (takebackdrugs.org) regularly add safe disposal locations. The locations do not take needles and other items that are defined as “Sharps,” but the local waste haulers will provide free, postage paid mail-back containers.

Batteries, latex-based paint, antifreeze and used motor oil and oil filters can all be taken to your local ABOP facility.

Many of these facilities also take compact fluorescents (which contain mercury and should never be thrown away) and small household electronics, but be sure to check their websites as they have quantity limits.

And if you only want to make one stop for disposal, the city offers an annual Household Goods and Hazardous Waste Day. The 2020 event was postponed and

Carpinteria artist recreates popular SB sculpture Rearing up on his hind legs and pawing at the air, Spirit, a life-sized metal horse sculpture turned heads on Santa Barbara’s upper State Street for 44 years before it was removed in 2016 to make way for a new condominium development. This year, Spirit artist John Godkin completed the horse’s rebirth, a second 12-foot tall corten steel sculpture that captures the same energy and emotion of his original work from nearly 50 years ago.

“When Spirit came down in 2016, the community outcry really resonated with me,” said Godkin. “I realized that an art piece that meant so much to me had also found a place into the hearts of the hundreds of people who drove, walked and bicycled by it for 44 years. That realization motivated me and challenged me to give Spirit a second life.”

Godkin, a Carpinteria resident, created the original Spirit as his college thesis project and first exhibited the sculpture at the Brooks Institute’s Riviera Campus in May of 1971. From there, Spirit won best of show at the Ventura County Fair and was displayed at the Santa Barbara Polo Field during a celebrity polo match and charity event later that year. In 1972, the owner of The Cattlemen’s Inn at 3714 State Street purchased and installed the

sculpture along his property’s street frontage where it enjoyed residence until the inn was demolished in 2016 to make way for the Estancia development.

While Spirit stood on State Street for all those years, Godkin continued to hone his talents. He became a successful Santa Barbara County contractor and still carved out time to pursue his painting and sculpting passion. His works have been collected around the world, with patrons located in Canada, Sweden, Ireland and England. Godkin’s many collectors include basketball Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain.

As a member of the prestigious Oil Painters of America, Godkin recently entered an international oil painting competition and was recognized with the “Top 15 Best” award from Fine Art Studios Online. Locally displayed artwork by Godkin include portraits of Carpinteria Hall of Fame athletes exhibited in the high school gymnasium. Also, in 2014 Godkin completed an oil portrait of local war hero Jaime Rodriquez for the “Portraits of the Fallen” project. The portrait was donated to the family after being displayed in the Nixon Library in San Clemente.

where he rode a horse to a one-room schoolhouse for his daily lessons.

In adulthood, he came across a story about the Lakota Chief Crazy Horse that inspired his sculpture’s name and helped to define his relationship to Spirit. “When Crazy Horse was a boy, he had a vision of himself riding his horse in the spirit world, which was like a shadow of the real world that danced and shimmered beyond,” said Godkin.

“My sculpture is not the real horse but a shadowy representation of the grace, beauty and strength of the horse’s spirit.”

Now that Godkin has completed the new Spirit, he is focused on locating a permanent home for the sculpture where it will be appreciated by the public. “I hope that this new work can fill the void left when the original Spirit came down,” said Godkin. “It would bring me such satisfaction to have the old and young enjoying the grace and power of Spirit.”

The pillar of Agnes, part two

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY Last month, I began the story of the life of my great-grandmother Agnes Ziska Bina. I wrote about how her husband ended his own life in 1931 leaving Agnes with four young daughters; and how Agnes made a new life afterward, giving birth to an out-of-wedlock fifth daughter in 1935.

In 1939, my grandmother, Agnes’ oldest daughter, left North Dakota two days after marrying my grandfather, then drove across the country to begin life in California. This was a heart-wrenching event for both mother and daughter, as they had always been close. I have the first letter Agnes wrote to my grandmother after the newlyweds arrived in that far-off ‘country’ of California, and in those 10 pages, Agnes light-heartedly tells the events of home and small town Whitman since her 17-year-old-daughter left, but ends with a mixture of sorrow and encouragement.

“You might know Mildred that I am lonesome at times, but I would be even if you were here. I guess we all get the blues. I’ll be OK. When I will know that you like your new home, that’s the main thing. Even if you do get lonesome, don’t be afraid to tell me. I won’t feel no worse than if I find out from others. But I don’t think you will get lonesome for home!

More so, that you will get lonesome for your ‘hubby’ staying away all day working. Write me more how you like that country and write the truth, it won’t make me feel bad if you don’t like it. I will have more hopes for you coming back (haha) and if you think you like it there just as well as here I will also feel good about it. I went through so much that I can stand most anything so answer all my questions. Close with lots of love to both of you, from Mother.”

In the mid ‘40s, Agnes moved her family to Devils Lake, North Dakota where

Four generations posed for a photo ca. 1965 in Culver City: Agnes, Mildred, Beverly (Lisa’s mother), and Lisa. she and her second daughter, Grace, were offered chambermaid jobs at a hotel. She sold the house in Whitman and bought a larger one in Devils Lake, enabling her to rent out rooms. That arrangement brought her more income, and eventually a new husband. Kel was a kind, well-humored border who worked for the county and had never been married.

They wed in 1950, and he adopted Agnes’ youngest daughter, giving her his name.

My grandmother said that was the first time she ever saw her mother truly happy. They had a wonderful relationship and many happy years traveling around North Dakota, and all the way out to that

‘country’ of California.

On March 4, 1967, Agnes died at the age of 67 from a rare stomach cancer and was laid to rest in Devils Lake. Twenty-four years later our family realized that Agnes took to her grave at least two closely held secrets.

In 1991, my grandmother received the shock of her life when a phone call from her sister Raxine gave the news that they had two more nieces. My grandmother said, “When mother and Grace worked at the hotel, two men at the hotel took advantage of Grace. The heartaches my mother went through! Mother took Grace to Fargo where they adopted the babies

out. Two different times, two different men. I knew nothing about it. And Lo and Behold! These two gals found out that Grace was their mother, and they found out that they were sisters by two different men. Was that ever a shocker!

They were well into their 40s when they contacted me.”

My grandmother was terribly hurt that Agnes had not told her about the babies, but she came to understand that her mother was once again taking care of a difficult situation in the only way she knew. Grace had always been what people referred to as ‘slow’ in those days, was not married, and neither her nor Agnes had the means to raise two more children in 1947 and ’49.

Yes, there is more to this story about these lost and found grandchildren of my pillar of strength great-grandmother Agnes. But that is my cousins’ story, and will have to wait for another day…

Girls Inc. welcomes new president and new members

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria named Lori Pearce the organization’s new board president. Pearce is the director of information technology and business operations at NuSil Technology. Three new board members were also appointed: Caroline Alarcon, Peter Dugré and Angelina Lane.

“We are delighted to welcome Lori as our new board president, along with a talented group of new members who are committed to advancing the mission of Girls Inc. in our community,” said Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

Pearce has served on the Girls Inc. of Carpinteria board for two years, and has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana University East and an associate degree in computer science from Santa Barbara City College. She is an active volunteer in the community with local schools and organizations including Carpinteria Valley Girls Softball and the Girl Scouts, and previously served on the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors.

Incoming board member Caroline Alarcon is the owner of Reliant Notary Services in Carpinteria, and brings prior experience in the Public Health Department and nonprofit sector, having worked in leadership roles including public engagement, fiscal responsibility, strategic planning and policy writing for other governmental agencies. Alarcon currently serves on the Board of the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce and the Latina Professional Alliance.

Peter Dugré is also joining the board and is co-owner of Two Trumpets Communications, a Carpinteria-based agency specializing in outreach for organizations.

Prior to that, Dugré spent 10 years as a journalist, editor and director of print publications in the local media market.

He specializes in messaging through written materials, long term publicity strategies and media relations.

Angelina Lane is an attorney and partner at Lynn & O’Brien, LLP, where her focus has been in civil litigation and plaintiff cases for injury, including civil rights actions, appellate work and criminal law in both the state and federal courts. Lane has also worked extensively with the California Appellate Project, undertaking criminal appeals to rectify potential abuses within the court system.

She previously worked with the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s office as a deputy district attorney in Santa Maria.

Carpinterians publish books to acclaim
