SBCC offers a fresh future to Girls Inc.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria members converged on the Santa Barbara City College campus for two weeks this summer as part of the new Fresh Futures Summer Camp, a program designed to provide incoming fourth through seventh grade girls (ages nine to 13) with support through the transition to teenage life.

In partnership between Girls Inc., the STEM Transfer Program at SBCC and the Inner Warrior Project (IWP), the summer camp aimed to bring a well-rounded, targeted curriculum that engaged the “whole girl” and dares her to dream big.

The initiative is designed to provide girls with an impactful, comprehensive experience and to serve as a catalyst for growth across enrichment programs.

“We recognized a gap in service between this particular age group, most often because girls are gaining more independence and may not require afterschool care or day camps,” said Jessica Wetzel, program director at Girls Inc. “Our goal with the Fresh Futures Initiative is to truly engage all girls for a sustained period of time on a continuum of programming that addresses their needs at every stage.”

SBCC’s STEM Transfer Program assists Hispanic and/or low income students by creating a streamlined educational plan that ensures transfer to a four-year institution in a STEM area. Throughout the two-week program, the girls participated in math and physics labs with current SBCC students and professors

“The girls had the opportunity to see themselves in college and that will have a positive impact on their futures,” said Adolfo Corral, STEM transfer program coordinator at SBCC. Assertiveness and self-defense training offered by the IWP helped the girls learn to better express themselves and

to build confidence in a college setting.

The IWP was created as a movement to help create a safe community where boundaries are voiced and respected, and to empower individuals to protect themselves through education in martial arts, yoga and health.

City releases report on coastal vulnerability Worst case scenario: Carpinteria sea level rises 10 feet by 2100

By DeBra Herrick The City of Carpinteria has released the Coastal Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Project (Report) and opened a public comments period which will close on Aug. 3. The report identifies vulnerabilities and will be used to inform the City’s General Plan and Local Coastal Program, aimed at enhancing the community’s resilience to sea level rise.

According to the report, the rate of sea level rise in Carpinteria will be dependent on three factors: warming of the ocean, ice melt and vertical land motion. Community resources are already strained by regular tidal-inundation events, and sea level rise will produce greater challenges in years to come.

Before the City’s development, many of the affected areas were wetlands. These zones have been altered and expanded into low lying areas. Infrastructure, roads and neighborhoods have been built—all of which will need to adapt to rising sea levels.

The study made several key findings concerning what would happen to the City’s coastal development if no adaptation plan is established.

Sea level increasing one foot would result in coastal erosion and flood damage to the beach neighborhood, cliff erosion along Carpinteria Bluffs and potential degradation to the railroad tracks and park trails.

A two-foot sea level rise would cause coastal erosion and flooding from Ash to Linden avenues and inland to the railroad tracks, as well as the Carpinteria State Park campground. Additionally, routine high tides could regularly impact storm water drainage.

Five feet of sea level rise would cause erosion extending through the first parcels on Sandyland Road and into the Concha Loma neighborhood and Carpinteria Bluffs. Storm wave flooding could reach downtown, the wastewater treatment plant and Aliso Elementary School. Routine tidal flooding could inundate the beach neighborhood and the State Park all the way up to Tomol Interpretative Park, putting approximately $500 million in property at risk.

If the City were to do nothing, the number of vulnerable residential dwellings exposed to coastal wave flooding within Carpinteria would likely increase from 86 today, to 237 by the year 2040, and up to 1,090 by 2100.

The study accounts for coastal hazard vulnerabilities with up to approximately five feet of sea level rise by the year 2100—however, sea level rise projections for 2100 range from two to 10 feet, with recent studies identifying the higher level as the worst case.

In terms of planning and next steps, the City will consider various strategies including “do nothing,” “protection,” “accommodation,” “managed retreat” and “hybrid.”

Do nothing, or a policy of nonintervention, historically results in costly emergency responses.

Protection strategies employ engineered structures to protect existing development and resources in their current locations, such as “grey” or “hard” engineered seawalls, or “green” or “soft” natural dune defenses.

Accommodation strategies decrease hazard risks by modifying existing structures. On a community scale, these strategies include changes in land use designations, zoning ordinances or clustering development in less vulnerable areas. On an individual project scale, an example of accommodation is elevating structures.

goals across a long timeline.

The study ultimately asserts that “There is no single adaptation strategy that will effectively adapt to climate impacts; a hybrid approach that uses strategies from multiple categories will be

necessary, and the suite of strategies will change over time.”

The report was prepared as an initial assessment towards creating a forwardthinking action plan. “The report sets up the foundation for Carpinteria’s General Plan,” said Julia Pujo, environmental planner and consultant to the City. “It will feed directly into the policy decisions we make in the next two years.

“Right now, the public has an opportunity to review the information we have and to contribute to a conversation on where we should go from here in terms of adaptation strategies and planning for sea level rise and changes.”

Struggling locals to bear burden of sales tax hike

Perhaps the city should have considered scaling back the size and expense of the new Sanitary District offices instead of asking for a sales tax increase from 7.75 percent to 9 percent to cover their $1.5 million shortfall? With the pending increase of water costs to cover the $21 million to Carp Valley Water District plus another $1 million in yearly costs, just how much do they think local people just getting by can handle? Why not consider raising bed taxes alone if they want to target visitors? Also, a cost benefit analysis should be done before re-contracting with the county Sheriff’s Dept.

Sales tax increase, a needed investment

There’s an important proposition on the ballot this November. It proposes a 1.25 percent sales tax increase to the City of Carpinteria, taking us from 7.75 percent to 9 percent. I encourage you to study the pros and cons.

As a staunch Independent, I strive to put myself calmly into the shoes of each side of an argument or proposal before taking a position. Our family is voting in favor of Proposition X. It’s an investment in our city.

What I know for sure is that Carpinteria is among the most incredible small towns in America. What I also know for sure is that it’s hard work keeping a charming small town small. I also know that the staff of the City of Carpinteria is comprised of highly responsible, dedicated, hardworking people passionate about Carpinteria and that our City Council is among the best of the best, working diligently to keep Carpinteria the amazing city it is.

emergency services, fund our library and more, I give strong consideration to their opinion. While there may be other ways to raise the needed dollars, in my opinion they seem less fair, sometimes more discriminatory, and sometimes harmful to the future of Carpinteria.

It’s my understanding that approximately 50 percent of this tax will be borne by visitors coming to visit, shop and stay in our tiny town, so the direct impact to my family is manageable. This is an affordable tradeoff to keeping Carpinteria Carpinteria.

Statewide, sales tax rates vary between 7.25 percent and 10.25 percent. Nine percent isn’t out of line.

ARB should reject Concha Loma upzoning

Last winter when flood warnings had just been issued for the State Park, I fell into conversation with one of the hosts there. He was clear that Carpinteria is an amazing place and spent the next 10 minutes bolstering his argument with research he had done up and down the coast and inland. I had been struggling that day with a frustrating home furnace problem but his words gave me a new perspective.

Carpinteria—and more specifically the Concha Loma sub-division—shows the results of residents who care about their community and have seen or perhaps experienced the effects of up-zoning, density and lax enforcement of regulations and don’t want that same fate for Concha Loma. I am personally familiar with both Carpinteria and Seattle, Washington where the onslaught of growth has created a city that becomes ever harder to recognize.

I am hopeful that the Carpinteria Architectural Review Board (ARB) members will take extra caution by rejecting proposed housing permits in Concha Loma that obviously stray from both the character of the neighborhood and their related Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions. The ARB will review a contested Concha Loma project and hear public comment on Thursday, July 26, at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

We often read about concerns regarding overbuilding commercial projects like hotels in Carpinteria, but often ignored are the proposals for residential projects.

We live in a small community with modest and unimposing homes, unlike some beach communities that have demolished single-story homes to build box-like mansions squeezed on small residential lots. In my Concha Loma neighborhood, there are several vacant lots, one of which has plans for a two-story home adjacent to the railroad tracks that will block the view of neighbors across the street and, if approved, would undoubtedly inspire more mansionization. If we value our small-town atmosphere, these plans should be subject to careful scrutiny and neighborhood approval before we are overrun with large projects that do not fit into our community.

The magic of Carpinteria

Few can resist the allure of small beach towns. The essence they share permeates our souls and evokes memories lasting long after the town has grown up and lost that essence through the noise of city life.

These towns share a common element—that of understatement. The sound of waves, the faint scent of salt air, the grit of sand beneath our feet and the fresh ocean breeze—all subtly working together as an orchestra we take in when we experience these towns. But it is a delicate balance that is easily lost.

The Concha Loma neighborhood is at risk of losing its essence: the charming houses along the rural roads; friendly neighbors tending their yards or reading on a porch who wave to the passerby; the experience of walking to the beach.

Now, an architect has designed a house that is a cookie-cutter, massive transplant from anywhere USA, and it is starkly out of balance with the Concha Loma neighborhood. Its walls will loom above the surroundings, obliterating views and the neighbors themselves. If this house is built as proposed, it will be the forerunner of noisy city life.

At the July 23 city council meeting, Lt. Brian Thielst gave the annual law enforcement services report. This was Lt. Thielst’s first annual report having started his position as Lieutenant in October of last year.

In his report, Lt. Thielst noted that the only jump in crime has been thefts TRAVELTEN90.COM (burglary, larceny and vehicle) and that two of the department’s main concerns are gang activity and burglaries connected to the cannabis growers. He made a point to note that the gang activity is not specifically gang members living in Carpinteria, but rather those passing through. At the July 23 City Council meeting, the City Council voted unanimously (4-0 with Councilman Stein absent) to receive and file a Community Choice Energy (CCE) Technical Study and direct staff on future participation in a regional CCE. Councilmembers and several members of the public spoke in support of this action.

Approval of the motion means that the city moves forward to explore the formation of a CCE in the future.

City Environmental Coordinator Erin Maker highlighted the difference between CCEs and the current utility system stating, “Instead of the investorowned utilities—in our case Southern California Edison—being the purchaser and deliverer of power to the customer … with Community Choice Energy, the purchasing power comes under local control, so we have more control over the type of energy that is purchased with the goal of providing greener energy at a lower cost.”

She added that this change has little effect on the consumer. Pursuing the option of a future CCE is also in line with Governor Brown’s state mandate requiring 50 percent renewable energy sources by 2030, as pointed out by Mayor Shaw.

Many members of the public spoke in favor of this action. Mariah Clegg, a researcher at UCSB who studies CCEs (also referred to as Community Choice Aggregation or CCAs) spoke about just a few of the benefits of these programs.

“This is truly coalition work and there are so many reasons to get behind this,” Clegg noted. “A CCA can create local jobs. It can help us meet our sustainability goals faster. It can make us more resilient.

We can take care of our house and we can even save money.”

The Community Choice Energy vote was not the only environmental issue discussed at Tuesday’s meeting. The City Council also voted 4-0, again with Councilman Stein absent, to authorize the City Manager to sign the Memorandum of Understanding for participation in the Santa Barbara County Strategic Energy Planning Services Contract.

The city of Carpinteria will be a Cooperating Partner and will join forces with other cities in Santa Barbara County in 84-4428 a collaborative effort to reach common goals such as lowering greenhouse gas emissions and building resilience to natural disasters. Club SCene City issues discussed at Republican Club summer meeting

Thank you, Carpinteria, from the bottom of my heart for the kindness and caring that you provided for my family and I after the sudden passing of my husband, Foster Markolf.

Shelbi Marie Ventura was born on June 23, 2018 at 5:05 p.m. She weighed 6.6 pounds and was 20 inches long. Parents Jaimi Richardson Ventura of Carpinteria and Jimmy Ventura of Santa barbara were still trying to decide on a name for baby Girl Ventura—they figured they had some time since she was expected to arrive on July 4—but Shelbi couldn’t wait to meet her big sister Cali and her big brother J.J. and the rest of her family. She even got to attend her own baby shower as she was born the day of the party. The whole family couldn’t be happier.

Thank you Lea Boyd for writing the beautiful obituary, and for Donna Jordan and Bryan Mootz especially for helping me to arrange a beautiful celebration of his life at the beach; to Senor’ Frogs for the wonderful food for the family and friends after the celebration, and to all of you who sent the beautiful flowers and thoughtful cards and messages. Carpinteria Beautiful provided dinners, snacks and emotional support for many days; neighbors Terry and Stan Scrivner opened their home for out of town guests sleeping arrangements, and to many others who helped in other ways.

How many places in today’s world would you encounter a community who envelops and helps you through life’s tragedies?

Foster had loved Carpinteria since he was young and convinced me it was “the” place to move. I admit I was skeptical, however, I no longer am.

It is with great sadness that the families of Janice Shostek Gronek announce her passing on Monday, July 9, 2018 at the age of 87. Jan will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 19 years, Robert Gronek, and her sons and daughterin laws Thomas and Enih Phillips, Gregory and Debi Phillips.

Janice was born May 6, 1931 in Selma, California and moved to Santa Barbara in 1959 with her first husband Peter Phillips, along with Tom and Greg.

Janice met her husband Bob Gronek in 1999. They had so much fun traveling to different cities, playing in different casinos, dining and enjoying cocktails. Janice was the love of Bob’s life.

Janice will also be fondly remembered by her 6 grandchildren Alison, Rachel, Karly, Stephan, Anthony “AJ” and Kate, along with her 7 great-grandchildren.

Janice loved life. She accepted people for who they were with an unconditional love for her family.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She was laid to rest in Fresno, California alongside her parents.

Cultivating a wild garden—drought tolerance and resilience in a changing climate

EXPLORING THE VALLEY’S WILD AND CULTIVATED SPACES

ALENA STEEN It is easy to forget that we live within severe drought in southern California.

Many of our homes and public spaces are surrounded by fertile, green gardens irrigated once or twice weekly, and backyard pools provide welcome relief from the heat. Balmy year-round temperatures lead folks visiting from the rest of the country to declare there are no seasons in California.

If you walk into our foothills and mountains at this time of year however, you enter a completely different landscape. The seasons of California are wet and dry, and the difference is so profound that resilience in the face of an extended dry season is the main evolutionary driver for the native plants and animals of our wild places. Summer is a time of rest for wild California—many birds and animals are only active at dusk and dawn to avoid the heat, while plants have died back, withdrawing into roots and seeds.

Southern California is shaped by the reality of a dry season that can last up to seven months. This already extreme environment now faces the challenges of a rapidly changing climate. Summers are hotter, while winter rains come later and with generally lower than average rainfall. Longer and drier summers create almost year-round fire danger.

While these changes can seem overwhelming, there is much we can do as individuals to lessen our impact and support the wild systems that sustain

My favorite way is through a form of wild and resilient gardening that conserves water while creating habitat for wild animals and food for humans. The following are some first steps towards nurturing your own wild edible garden.

Fertile soil is the beginning of a healthy and productive garden. The dirt beneath us is deeply alive, with millions of microorganisms in every teaspoonful of soil.

These organisms are recyclers, turning waste materials into nutrients that feed plants. Fertile soil is also better able to hold water, releasing it slowly to plants’ roots and decreasing water needs.

Compost is the best way to feed soil microorganisms and build healthy soil. A little compost goes a long way—just one or two inches turned into your topsoil every season will dramatically improve fertility. Another option is to water with compost tea every month through the growing season. To make your own, fill a five-gallon bucket with 1/3-part compost and 2/3 water. Stir several times a day for

five days and then pour the brew through a strainer or mesh. Use this potent potion as a leaf spray for plants or pour directly into the soil.

two to four inches of wood chips or straw will further reduce your watering needs, while slowly building soil fertility as the bottom layer of mulch breaks down.

Healthy soil and a thick layer of organic mulch will allow you to water much less. Try to draw your landscape water use to one-half to one-third of current use. Water more deeply, and less often.

Deep, inconsistent watering encourages plants to grow stronger roots seeking sustenance, making them more resilient during dry spells. Only water once the top inch of soil is dry—though the surface crust will dry rapidly without mulch, it’s important to explore deeper, since just half an inch below may still be damp.

Once you have the bones of a healthy garden, bring in structure, shade and food plants for yourself and the animals—the birds and insects that make a garden hum. Be a messy gardener, allow leaves to pile up to retain moisture and break down into rich soil while providing a home for native pollinators and birds.

Allow plants to ripen and dry, setting seed in the garden and for hungry flocks of goldfinches. Plant trees and tall shrubs to create shady and protected spaces for wildlife. Include culinary herbs and edible fruits and vegetables in the landscape. A food garden does not have to look like orderly raised beds or farm rows. Intersperse ornamental plantings with leafy greens, tomatoes and basil.

Make room for drought-tolerant native plants in your garden, which support the host of local birds and insects that have evolved alongside them for millennia.

Cultivating a food-producing, wildlife friendly and water-wise garden is a beautiful way to interact with the wilderness that surrounds us in Carpinteria.

Creating healthy soil that grows food for your household while reducing water needs and providing shade and shelter for wildlife is an effective response to the pressures of our changing environment.

Of course, the reliance on social media and access to internet has shaped this generation’s character. At just 13, Vilchez has decided to become an immigration lawyer to help migrants reunite with their families and gain citizenship. She said she’d like to address the issue of how our administration has been treating families at the border and hopes her profession can do so.

Garrett and Vilchez had much to say about what adults get wrong about their generation. The biggest complaint they hear is that teens are lazy or always on their phones, and the two refute both points. Garrett said, “My mom’s always like, ‘You’re too lazy, you never do anything. You never go on walks, all you do is sit in your room, blah blah blah.’” Instead, she said she makes an effort to go out with friends and believes that checking the newest posts takes the backburner when spending time with those around her. Vilchez agreed, saying, “If I was just texting friends, I wouldn’t be with (Asha) right now.”

All signs point toward technology growing more prevalent in years to come, especially with Gen Z being the first generation growing up with the everyday know-how for navigating our tech-saturated world. Devices have developed in capacity and complexity at an exponential rate. For Garrett, pagers and brick phones came from “back in the old days.” The iGen grew up alongside the scaling of most of today’s top technology. This generation will likely see all commonplace gadgets integrate smart technology in some way, and we’ve already seen this trend with technology like voice-command door locks or touchscreen refrigerators.

Vilchez predicts that wearable devices will be common in the future, such as the infamous Google Glasses or the popular Apple Watch. Most gadgets will have some degree of integrated augmented, or virtual, reality.

As for their view of the future, Garrett and Vilchez are convinced that Generation Z will bring a brighter tomorrow.

They both said the state of the world is “crazy,” but things will turn out fine.

“I think we’ll be okay,” Vilchez said.

North African Tagine

chef Randy Randy GRaham A tagine is a conical earthenware pot used for slow cooking. Tagine is also the North African stew prepared in the tagine pot. Historically, the nomads in North Africa used these pots as portable ovens, allowing them to prepare food at any time while moving around.

A traditional tagine stew contains bits of meat (lamb or chicken) and vegetables.

Spices, nuts and dried fruits are also used.

Common spices include ginger, cumin, turmeric, cinnamon and saffron. My vegan stovetop version is made with onions, carrots, zucchini, potato, chickpeas, cabbage, eggplant and a special blend of spices. It is wonderful when served over nutty-tasting couscous. If you don’t have time to make couscous, serve it with a fresh loaf of French bread. Either way, I think you’ll enjoy this slow-cooked vegan flavor flash.

2 tablespoons fresh Italian parsley (chopped – divided) 1 tablespoon tomato purée 4 cups vegetable broth 1 tablespoon Better Than Bouillon (no beef base) 2 carrots (cut into one-inch pieces) 1 large russet potato (peeled, cut into one-inch pieces) 14-ounce can chickpeas 8 pearl onions (peeled) 2 medium zucchini (cut into one-inch pieces) 5 small eggplants (cut into one-inch pieces) ½ cabbage (cut into eight wedges) 10 ounces uncooked couscous Harissa (as a condiment) *

Directions:

Place the onions in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Let stand for three minutes.

Remove, peel and set aside.

Place the ginger in a large pan with the saffron, cumin, coriander, 1½ tablespoons of the mint and 1½ tablespoons of the parsley, the tomato purée, vegetable broth and bouillon. Bring to a boil. Add the carrots, potatoes and chickpeas. Reduce heat to medium low, cover and cook for 10 minutes. Add the onions, zucchini, eggplant and cabbage. Stir, cover and cook for 30 minutes more, stirring occasionally.

Carpinteria player takes his game to the next level

BY ALONZO OROZCO Class of 2017 Carpinteria High School alum David Martinez has taken his game to the next level. The former Warrior slugger who played on coach Pat Cooney’s baseball team is currently on the roster at Cuesta College. Although he redshirted this year—practicing with the team, but not officially playing in order to extend his collegiate eligibility— Martinez made some brief appearances early in the year on the Carpinteria-based Santa Barbara Foresters, playing alongside former Warrior teammate Toby Spach.

The third base/first baseman is also currently playing ball this summer for the Santa Barbara Coastal Cubs, entering his second year with the squad.

The Cubs, a part of the Santa Barbara Grizzlies family who compete against the Foresters and other California Collegiate League teams, are made up of high school and college players. Martinez has also been able to take advantage of some Warrior connections with one of his co-head coaches being Roderick Hutchinson, whose two sons, Marcus and Roderick Jr., competed at CHS and graduated this past year. Spach is also on the roster in his familiar spot as catcher.

Still in the early days of his collegiate career, Martinez has yet to declare a major but is looking to go into nursing. As far as playing baseball, the sophomore is taking it year by year. “Everything’s a little bit faster, it’s still the same game, but the pitchers throw a little bit harder, the ground balls are going to come a little bit faster,” said Martinez of his experience against college players.

Martinez started early, joining the Foresters’ Executive Director/Head Coach Bill Pintard’s Junior Foresters team in the sixth grade staying on until his junior year of high school. He also played for the Warriors through each of his four years in high school, and moving forward Martinez hopes to play ball for as long as possible.

But he also sees a future in coaching.

“I’d love to give back all the stuff I’ve learned,” Martinez explained, “thanks to all the coaches who taught me to play, and thanks to my parents.” Meanwhile, he plans to try and get more playing time at Cuesta, playing any infield position that happens to come his way.

Sea Sisters Retreat will focus on body image

Body-image activist and former World Surf League surfer Bo Stanley will host a women’s surf retreat on Aug. 7 in Carpinteria. The Sea Sisters Retreat will focus on creating positive female group dynamics, empowering the mind/body connection through surfing fundamentals, and learning to understand and change negative body image.

“We want to offer a positive space where women can connect with and support one another while re-training their old beliefs that they can’t do the things they’ve always wanted to try,” said Stanley. “I think we’ve all experienced letting our insecurities stop us from trying things, and the truth is, we can change that narrative.”

Sea Sisters is founded by self-proclaimed “body activists” Bo Stanley, Kerry Gough and Hayley Fedders. Bo Stanley and Kerry Gough first became interested in creating a workshop of this kind in 2016 when they partnered together to host the body-image positive film, “Embrace” in Woodland Hills. A licensed professional clinical counselor and eating disorder specialist, Gough was working at a residential treatment center when she approached Stanley to help partner and promote the film viewing and subsequent community discussion. Two years later, fellow surfer and branding expert Hayley Fedders joined

the collaborative partnership to launch the surf retreat Sea Sisters.

Led by coach Julie Rubio-Shamblin and cheer mom Denise Barber, the girls worked through routines in preparation for performances at the upcoming children’s fiesta parade and at halftime at the Warriors football home opener. Each participant received a commemorative T-shirt and learned the importance of working together as a team.

Only a comparatively few acres were devoted to lemon culture thirty years ago, while at the present time practically all of the tillable land of the valley has been set to lemons. Thirty years ago, the same could advisedly be said of walnut trees, but all those trees have been taken out and the land planted to lemons.

Nearly 50 youngsters gathered recently at Aliso Elementary School in Carpinteria for a science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) hands-on event. The students joined volunteers in a “Fun in the Sun” project, a United Way of Santa Barbara program, funded by Edison international.

Heather Madden Medel volunteers with more than 20 people at the Saint Joseph Catholic Church Thrift store, and hosted a special luncheon at her home to treat all her fellow volunteers on Sunday, July 8. A number of volunteers also volunteered as servers, and a few attendees took advantage of Medel’s pool to beat the recordbreaking heat. The ladies each donate over 25 hours a week helping to sort, price and display all the donated items for sale. Canalino welcomes Gen 7 buildings

Gen 7 buildings arrive at Canalino School in the pre-dawn hours of July 6. The state-of-the-art buildings represent 21st-century engineering and technology with lower construction costs and 70 percent less energy usage than “brick-and mortar” classrooms. The new classrooms, equipped for digital technology and utilizing natural light, can be configured with numerous floor plans to accommodate different teaching goals and have a 50-year lifecycle. While conventionally built classrooms are also designed for 50-year lifecycles, Gen7 buildings are constructed in just 60 percent of the time. Gen 7 classrooms are also coming to Carpinteria Middle School and Carpinteria High School this summer, paid for with Measure U funds.

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham I have to admit, even though I am privileged to work and guide kayak trips at Channel Islands National Park, sometimes things can get a little stale on the largest isle off the California Coast. Diversions are needed before and after work to keep things fresh on the volcanic isle.

A couple of guides have come up with some challenges to get guides out of their comfort zones. It’s pretty comical as the challenges are written on a spreadsheet and posted in the guide shed, and I’ve done most of them too many times to count. I’ve had to keep things fresh out there for a while. But I’m a good sport and have accomplished all of the challenges recently posted: a timed, 7.5-mile round-trip run from Scorpion Anchorage to Smugglers Cove; a timed, round-trip swim from Scorpion Anchorage to Scorpion Rock and a swim through the epic sea cave.

I had to raise the stakes a bit. What about an after-work paddle, round-trip from Scorpion Anchorage to Anacapa Island? Rules were spelled out. Spend the night if you want, but you better get up early and make it back to work on time the next day. It can be accomplished in an afternoon, but a slower paddler might find themselves kayaking across the Anacapa Passage in the dark.

One much younger guide was all in— the same guide posting all the challenges to begin with. He was keen. He’d never done anything like it before. Fortunately, we had stellar paddling conditions and I was happy to take someone eager to experience a little bit more than Scorpion Anchorage. We hustled to clean up kayak gear and re-rack kayaks after work, then break down our gear to a minimum.

Kayaking a midsummer day down island is about as easy as paddling gets at the Channel Islands. Northwest winds, the south-running current and a mild west swell easily propelled us the two miles down to San Pedro Point at the southeast tip of Santa Cruz Island.

West Anacapa Island. Other than several squadrons of black-vented shearwaters rafting up in the middle of the Anacapa Passage, it was a fairly uneventful crossing to the second-smallest isle off the California Coast.

From afar, the west end of Anacapa Island isn’t all that spectacular, but when approaching it at sea level in a kayak the sheer, wave-battered cliffs come to life. Legions of western gulls call out and soar overhead. Toothy sea caves groan with the ebb and flow of the tide, and juvenile California brown pelicans plunge the turquoise blue waters, trying to figure things out in the first year of life. Black oystercatchers forage the mussels and barnacles, and newly fledged Brandt’s cormorants awkwardly huddle on knobby rock outcroppings.

We explored a few sea grottos, one being more impressive than the rest, with several alluvial fans cascading from the ceiling of the cave down to the water’s edge. Other grottos were occupied by bellowing California sea lions, some colored blonde after soaking in the sun, drying out from a day spent in the ocean.

With the sun sinking in the west we found a place to sleep. Western gull chicks were out and about and their agitated parents were hyper protective. Several dive-bombing parents hit us in the head whenever we got too close to one of their broods. The safest, quietest place to be was by our kayaks. An orphaned gull was all by itself—and yes, I know it’s just another western gull. And I was apathetic. I think it knew it. It kept getting closer as it got darker and the temperature dropped.

Guides explore a sea cave on Anacapa Island. chick was snuggling up to me in my sleeping bag. It scared me at first but then I realized what it wanted. It was going to have a hard time surviving. I guess one night of compassion wouldn’t hurt the month-old seabird.

Four-thirty in the morning rolled around way too quick. It was back to the grind and working kayak trips on the southeast end of Santa Cruz Island. It was noticeably cool out, but with a light and convenient southeast wind pushing us toward the mountainous island to the west, it only took us two hours to paddle to Scorpion Anchorage. Sea lions frolicked around us and a few common

dolphins kept us company. There was no whitewater bashing into the cliffs. It was going to be another great day on the water kayaking at one of the best paddling venues in the world—just have to keep the diversions coming and appreciate the fact that I don’t have to travel far to feel faraway.

On the rOad Down with the ship and CVN

Mike Quigley, Lisa Rader and Kathy Quigley visited the Vasa Museum—home of the ship Vasa.

Setting out for her maiden voyage on Aug. 10, 1628, at the height of Swedish military power, the Vasa sank in Stockholm Harbor before ever reaching open water. Too much weight topside was the reason for the capsize, as well as hesitation on the part of designers and builders to contradict the wishes of King Gustavus Adolphus, who ordered the ship to assume flag ship duties on the set launch date.

The wreck was salvaged in 1961 after 333 years underwater. The reconstructed vessel is 98 percent complete and looks as good as the day it was first intended to sail.

The pair stopped for a snapshot with their CVN at the Royal Castle of Neuschwanstein, one of the castles which in modern times inspired Cinderella’s castle at Disneyland. King Ludwig ll commissioned the castle and it was built between 1869 and 1885, but the king died in 1886.
