BRIEFLY Cresco updates proposal, hearing scheduled

On Aug. 11, at its regular meeting, Santa Barbara County’s Planning Commission will hold a public hearing for the Cresco Cannabis Cultivation and Processing Project.

The project scope has been reduced to no longer include a new storm water detention basin in the environmentally sensitive habitat (ESH) buffer area in the northern portion of the parcel. Instead, the existing onsite storm water detention basins located in the western and southern portions of the parcel will be deepened to accommodate the required storm water capacity. As previously proposed, the existing avocado trees will be removed and the ESH buffer area will be restored with native plants, shrubs and trees. The proposed vegetation will also provide additional screening to the property and proposed structures from Foothill Road, as previously proposed.

The Association for Women in Communication Santa Barbara (AWC-SB) has launched Books for Breakfast, an informal summer discussion group of books geared towards helping participants become better communicators. The next no-host event is taking place from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Aug. 11 at Caje Coffee Roasters, located at 1316 State St. (across from the Arlington Theatre). Meetings are free.

The book for August is “Ladies Get Paid: The Ultimate Guide to Breaking Barriers, Owning Your Worth and Taking Command of Your Career,” by Claire Wasserman.

“Ladies Get Paid” is an organization that champions the professional and financial advancement of women. Marymount of Santa Barbara school changes name to Riviera Ridge School

Beginning with the 2021-22 school year, the Marymount of Santa Barbara School will be known as the Riviera Ridge School, the school announced earlier this month.

The name change was prompted as part of the school’s 10-year strategic plan, according to a press release sent out by the school.

“The Trustees determined the first major action item to address was the school’s identity: revising its mission, vision and values; policies for diversity, equity and inclusion; and reviewing the “Marymount” name itself, which is affiliated and committed exclusively to the global network of Religious of Sacred Heart of Mary schools, and is not an accurate representation of the school as it is today,” the press release said.

Christina Broderick, head of school, said the school has evolved since its founding to “be inclusive of all moral and ethical teachings as well as spiritual beliefs,” thus the name change.

“Our former name has been a large source of confusion among prospective families and the community at large for many years. It was critical we address this deliberately and decisively. We will, as The Riviera Ridge School, continue to be the home of academic excellence, where we provide an environment that balances the social, emotional, and ethical dimensions of teaching and learning to create a future-proofed skill set,” Broderick said.

County recommends residents wear masks indoors, Delta variant cases increase CVN REPORT

All persons, vaccinated or unvaccinated, should wear masks while indoors, Santa Barbara County Public Health officials recommended on Monday. The advisory was issued following increased cases of the “highly transmissible” Covid-19 Delta variant, stated a press release from Public Health.

As of July 16, the county has reported 3.6 Covid-19 cases per 100,000 residents, with new cases reported each day. Beginning July, Covid-19 Delta variant cases are more than 50% of all identified cases in California, the county said.

This recommendation applies to all persons, vaccinated or unvaccinated, as an “extra precautionary measure.”

“Out of an abundance of caution, people are recommended to wear masks indoors in settings like grocery or retail stores, theaters and family entertainment centers, even if they are fully vaccinated as an added layer of protection for unvaccinated residents,” the press release stated. “Businesses are urged to adopt universal masking requirements for customers entering indoor areas of their businesses to provide better protection to their employees and customers.”

“Workplaces must comply with Cal/ OSHA requirements and fully vaccinated employees are encouraged to wear masks indoors if their employer has not confirmed the vaccination status of those around them.”

Dr. Henning Ansorg, county public health officer, encouraged all persons within the county to wear their masks while in public. To be effective, all masks must cover your nose and mouth and fit tightly around your nose and face.

County proclaims local emergency caused by drought CVN REPORT

On July 8, Governor Gavin Newsom added Santa Barbara County to the list of California counties experiencing a drought and subject to his emergency proclamation initially declared on April 10, 2021. On July 13, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors proclaimed a local emergency caused by current drought conditions within the county.

Proclaiming the existence of a drought emergency enables the county and water utilities to take immediate actions to mitigate and respond to the current drought conditions. “It is important that measures are taken now to mitigate the impacts of drought to ensure the resilience of our drinking water systems,” a press release from the county stated.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor report, more than 30% of California is in exceptional drought, the most severe of the monitor’s four categories. Roughly 80% of California is in extreme drought or exceptional drought.

Building and managing a reliable water system includes anticipating and planning for extreme weather and weather-related events, such as droughts, floods and wildland fires. It also considers estimates of future population growth, and projections of water use for people, manufacturing, agriculture and a host of other factors. It also used to rest on two key assumptions: that there is always more supply to be found, somewhere, to satisfy growing populations and water demand; and that the climate isn’t changing. These two assumptions are no longer true.

Fresh water is a scarce commodity.

Most of the world’s population who have never gone short of water take water availability for granted. Water supplies are diminishing while demand is soaring, yet few people are aware of the true extent of freshwater scarcity, confused by the huge expanses of oceans, lakes and icecaps covering the Earth’s surface. In all, barely 1% of all the world’s freshwater is easily accessible.

Historically, water has been at the center of much of this world’s conflict and suffering. Water is a valuable commodity due to droughts and overuse, and like all valuable assets, water needs expert management of resources guided by policies and regulations. Water resource management is the activity of planning, developing and distributing the optimum use of water resources. Ideally, water resource management considers all the competing demands and allocates water on an equitable basis.

Where does Santa Barbara County’s drinking water come from?

In most communities, water supplies are a blend of local groundwater, storm runoff and recycling, such as desalination. However, nearly 27 million California residents also rely on state water supplies originating in Northern California that are stored and conveyed in a series of pipes, pumps, dams and reservoirs from the Bay Delta; across the Central Valley, coasts and deserts; and down to San Diego County.

Locally, Santa Barbara County residents receive water from storm runoff, the State Water Project (state water), recycled water and desalination, delivered through a variety of water purveyors, generally municipal, private and special district water departments and agencies.

Most of the water used in North County comes from groundwater and state water, while the communities of Santa Ynez, Ballard and Los Olivos also receive some river water. Since groundwater level fluctuations are cyclical and sensitive to overdraft, groundwater withdrawal is closely monitored.

On July 8, Governor Gavin Newsom added Santa Barbara County to the list of California counties experiencing extreme drought.

Water deliveries from the State Water Project are used primarily as a supplemental supply with amounts that will vary each year. Santa Barbara County began receiving water from the State Water Project in 1997. Most recently, in April 2021, as the contract holder for the State Water Project with the California Department of Water Resources, the Santa Barbara County Flood Control and Water Conservation District approved Amendment 21 and Resolution No. 21-73, aimed at protecting the county’s regional water supplies.

Amendment 21 allows for greater flexibility to manage state water. Resolution No. 21-73 generally requires that prior to selling State Water Project water outside of Santa Barbara County, local water purveyors first offer the water to the other water purveyors within the county at a reasonable price and demonstrate that sellable water can be replaced by other water sources, i.e. reclaimed water, desalination or other local water supplies.

These principles allow regional water supply to be managed through time with droughts in mind and for the benefit of all county residents.

Santa Barbara County’s reservoirs

Santa Barbara County has four reservoirs. Cachuma Reservoir is owned and operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), Twitchell Reservoir is owned by the USBR and operated by the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, Gibraltar Reservoir is owned and operated by the city of Santa Barbara, and Jameson Reservoir is owned and operated by the Montecito Water District.

Water is delivered to the South Coast via three tunnels through the Santa Ynez Mountains.

An additional local source is desalinated ocean water, which is not dependent on rainfall. The process of removing the high concentration of salts and minerals from ocean water requires costly treatment plants that use a lot of energy and leave behind a brine that must be properly disposed of. As technology advances and other water sources become less available, desalination will become more cost-effective and a larger percentage of locally controlled water supplies.

The county’s Water Agency, Flood Control and Water Conservation District

in 1945 to control and conserve storm, flood and other surface water for beneficial use and to enter into contracts for water supply. The Water Agency administers the contracts with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation-owned Cachuma and Twitchell dam projects and participates in Groundwater Sustainability agencies.

In Santa Barbara County, groundwater basins that are subject to the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), including all medium and high priority basins as defined by the California Department of Water Resources. Under the SGMA, agencies in each of these basins were required to form Groundwater Sustainability Agencies.

Additionally, the Water Agency prepares investigations and reports on the county’s water requirements, groundwater conditions, efficient use of water, and other water supply related technical studies, and manages a number of countywide programs including the Integrated Regional Water Management Program, Regional Water Efficiency Program, and winter cloud seeding program.

The Water Agency was originally empowered under California Water Code to cooperate and contract with the state and federal governments on behalf of

municipalities and water districts within Santa Barbara County. It has since been empowered to acquire property, condemn for the purpose of right-of-way and assume indebtedness either as principle, guarantor or underwriter.

In 1955, the Santa Barbara County Flood Control and Water Conservation District was created by the state legislature with the primary purpose of providing flood protection and conserving storm, flood and surface waters for beneficial public use. The district has held the contract for the State Water Project with the California Department of Water Resources since 1963 and paid all capital costs for the project through 1986. It subsequently transferred certain rights and responsibilities under the contract to the Central Coast Water Authority, while retaining the contract itself. The district has broad powers to prevent the exportation of water from the county.

The Water Agency and the district, as well as a number of local water purveyors, operate water conservation and water use efficiency programs directed at helping consumers minimize waste and stretching threatened water supplies. For more information, visit waterwisesb.org.

Skatepark is needed

The skatepark will be the perfect addition to Carpinteria. We spend most weekends driving my boys to various skateparks where we watch them challenge and exhaust themselves and then usually grab lunch and a smoothie or ice-cream and spend money in the local stores.

We’re not alone – in fact, most families of young skaters you speak to do the same. The Carpinteria Skatepark will be a benefit not only to our youth, but also to those in surrounding areas and tourists who will come to not only enjoy our world class skatepark, but also to spend time and money exploring our town.

Skateboarding benefits our youth in so many ways. It is a means for them to get around and to expend their energy in a positive way. It provides an opportunity for our kids to get outside, stay active and be athletic while engaging in a positive alternative to typical team sports.

Let’s get our skatepark built. It’s time to give back to today’s youth and in turn drive traffic to our local restaurants and shops.

Change needed at City Hall

It seems to me that the majority of City Council members are no longer listening to the will of the people that have elected them to serve. It seems to me that someone has convinced them that it is more important to follow the dream of a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. It seems to me that it is time we make some changes at City Hall.

On democracy

Last night I was able to attend the Carpinteria City Council meeting in-person to discuss a resolution for the city to enter into a lease development and disposition agreement with developers that would allow public property to be used for private development. Everyone who attended or watched on TV had a front row seat to how our democracy works.

The city staff presented their report, then the developers had their turn and then the most important constituents, the public, had a chance to provide comments. All of that was done in a very respectful manner. Then our elected representatives, the City Council, had their chance to speak and comment before a motion was presented to vote on the resolution. democratic process of how representative government works.

Throughout the discussions, there was the mention of an initiative that has begun to circulate around town for registered voters to sign a petition to bring the issue to a vote. If enough signatures are gathered and certified by the Santa Barbara County Board of Elections, then the ultimate decision making is made by the citizens, and not the City Council.

The initiative process is part of the state of California Constitution, and for a valid reason: to protect a minority position from being voted in against the will of the majority. This is another critical piece of our democracy where the impassioned opinion of a City Council member will count exactly the same as our neighbors.

So, let’s all join in and sign the petition and bring it to a vote of all city residents, and not only five council members.

Whatever the result is will be accepted by all, for that is the core principle of our democracy.

Public opinion made no difference

On Monday night, we attended the Carpinteria City Council meeting concerning a vote of approval for an agreement between the city and the applicant Surfliner Inn partners, for a lease of city land and development of that property for a for-profit business: the hotel.

The city staff’s presentation of the project was so enthusiastic and positive, you might have thought that it was presented by a member of the project’s team.

It was mentioned, however, that it had been sent back for revisions, which were never acted upon or returned to the city.

So, my question is this: how can you vote on something you haven’t seen?

The comments from the public were overwhelmingly against the hotel and approval of an agreement between the

city and the applicant. Staff recommend approval as they have a great influence on the council’s voting; over 90% of their recommendations are approved, so it was perhaps a predicted conclusion. This is a dangerous arrangement as staff is not elected by the voters.

Some of the concerns from the public were these: setting a very bad precedent for hotels on the beachfront, not being in sale with our small-town feel, safety, the leasing of public property to a for-profit project, the drought and water use of hotel, blocking views of mountains and open space and allowing the public’s voice to be heard through a vote in the coming election.

The council listened and had very little discussion. Four councilmembers voted for approval of a lease and one voted against. We made no difference at all.

Fair and honest elections

In an ideal world, all citizens would demand fair and honest elections. They would insist that politicians and government officials implement common sense and practical voting laws and procedures.

The highest priority should be that every legitimate vote is counted, and fraudulent ballots are discarded.

Voter ID is the most effective way to insure that “one voter, one vote” is enforced. How anyone could oppose such common sense is baffling. A photo ID is required to cash a check, to board an airliner, to register for a hotel room, to enter many government buildings, to get a Covid-19 vaccination, and the list goes on.

“Ballot harvesting” (stacks of ballots carried in by one individual) should be against the law. If someone is unable to return their ballot, there is a place on the envelope to designate a person to do so.

Of course, a plain old-fashioned stamp will always do the trick.

If additional staff must be hired during elections, such an expense is vitally important. If we cannot be confident that an election was fair, then we cannot be confident that the elected candidate really won the election.

Who opposes these commonsense procedures? The liberal wing of the Democratic Party. Their flimsy reasoning is that voter ID disenfranchises minorities.

If they really cared about the very few people without IDs, they could easily use their huge, “get out to vote” apparatus to take people to get one.

Border crisis

In a recent CVN letter to the editor (Vol. 27, No. 41), Carolyn Edwards, referencing the tragic situation at our southern border, asked “Where are the children?”

Readers are familiar with the border crisis and realize that no answer has been provided and that the media is simply ignoring this Biden-created catastrophe.

Vice President Kamala Harris recently went to Central America and El Paso to seek out the “root causes” of the problem. I claim no expertise in international relations, but I can easily identify the root causes. Harris never visited the sites, and her woeful explanations didn’t answer Carolyn’s question.

I’ve stated before that I didn’t vote for Biden, but he is my president and I want him to do well. I have wonderful liberal friends and hope that some can provide responses to my genuine concern that the current policies are detrimental to the welfare of our country. A major concern is that Biden’s rush to the Green New Deal is curtailing our current energy supplies long before we have other dependable energy sources. It will be a long time before renewable energy sources can replace fossil fuels. Biden seems totally oblivious of this fact.

Somewhat related, I am extremely tired of charlatans like Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi and Maxine Waters continually referencing folks like me, who want election reform (including personal IDs), as “racists.” I generally don’t like to openly criticize individuals, but these people simply shouldn’t be in Washington.

Granted, there are others (including conservatives) who we should remove from office through the voting process. On the voting reform issue: How about simply helping those who don’t have a personal ID get one so they can vote?

America isn’t perfect, but I love it. I hope liberal friends can make me feel better about Biden and Harris.

High School sees uptick in failing grades

Barbara Calderwood 4/22/1931 – 7/16/2021

Barbara Calderwood passed away on Friday, July 16 after a years-long battle with dementia.

Barbara was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, but moved to California in the early 50s. She moved to Carpinteria with her growing family in late 1963 and has been here ever since. When her youngest, Pam, went to Canalino School, Barbara volunteered in their small library, and eventually became the full-time librarian and also ran the computer lab.

Her love of children’s literature was evident if you ever ventured into the library. While she retired after 30 years, she kept up her legendary love of books for many years after. Murder mysteries and science fiction were her favorites. Barbara lost her husband, John, in 1989. Deciding she wanted something fun to do, she and her daughter Kathy bought a corgi to return to a long-paused pastime. She and John had shown and raised corgis in the late 50s and early 60s. Dementia made it harder for her to travel to shows in recent years, but she still enjoyed the dogs at home.

Barbara is survived by her brother, Robert Watts, and four children: Kathy Dolge (Creig), Andy Calderwood, Chris Calderwood (Allison) and Pam Calderwood (Garry Preston). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Brian Dolge and Katie Julian (Kit), Kelso and Madera Calderwood, Patrick, Eion and Amy Calderwood, Jacob Bauernfeind, Garrett Day (Jessica) and Julia Bauernfeind, as well as two beloved great-grandchildren, Evan and Henry Julian.

Donations in her memory can be made to Parents for Canalino, 1480 Linden Ave. Carpinteria, CA 93013. Any donations will be used to purchase books for the Canalino School library.

A memorial will be held for family and friends on Aug. 16, at 1 p.m. at Lions Park in Carpinteria.

Kimberly Ann VanMeter-Steel 1/6/1968 – 5/25/2021

Kimberly A. VanMeter-Steel, 53, passed away, on May 25, after a hard fight with cancer. She passed in her home with her mother and sister by her side.

Kim was born Jan. 6, 1968, in La Mesa City, San Diego County, California, the daughter of William Edward VanMeter and Mary Ann Ertl-Doop.

Kim attended Carpinteria High School, where she finished with the Class of 1986.

Kim was a hard worker and a go-getter in all that she did throughout her life. She worked as a waitress at a few different places but for the past 20 years you would find her serving at IHOP on Upper State Street in the mornings and then at Harry’s in the evening. Her regular customers became the highlights of her workdays, especially on the holidays that she spent serving them.

Kim’s love for others showed through her interactions both inside and out of the workplace. In a later chapter in her life, she met her husband Richard Steel. He was her traveling partner, from cruises on boats to cruising the Pacific Highway with the Santa Barbara Corvette Club.

After Richard’s passing, Kim continued to travel with friends and family, keeping his memory alive and seeing the world one trip at a time. She delighted in trying the amazing cuisine along the way.

Kim’s smile could light up any room.

Her friends quickly became family and family was her first priority. She was a woman who loved everyone for who they were and never feared what others would think. Kim is, and will forever be, the life of the party and the best at picking out the best songs for the occasion. Cheers to her!

In addition to her husband, Kim was predeceased by her father, grandparents, uncles and her niece. In addition to her mother, Mary Ann Ertl-Doop, Kim is survived by her stepfather, Tracy Doop; her sisters, Christiaan VanMeter-Bailey and Kate Wilson-Doop; her brother, Travis Doop; niece, Challis Charles; and her son, Nixon Charles; along with many aunts, uncles and friends.

County seeks poll workers ahead of recall election

Santa Barbara County Registrar of Voters is looking for volunteers to serve as poll workers ahead of the Sept. 14 recall election of Gov. Gavin Newsom, the office announced last week.

“With this election taking place on such a short schedule, the Elections Office has less time than usual to recruit poll workers,” a press release stated.

Poll workers will receive stipends between $180 and $240 for working on Election Day and will receive training ahead of time. To be a poll worker, you must be a registered voter in California or be a legal permanent resident; be able to follow written and verbal instructions; be able to attend a mandatory training class; and be able to work on election day, Sept. 14, between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. or until work has finished.

“Poll workers are on the frontline of democracy; without them voting does not happen,” Joseph E. Holland, County Clerk-Recorded-Assessor and Register of Voters said. To learn more, visit countyofsb.org/care/elections/officers/information.sbc.

At Carpinteria High School, 7.8% of grades during the 2020-21 school year were classified as failing compared to .1% for the 2019-20 school year, Superintendent Diana Rigby announced at the district’s July 13 regular board meeting.

Carpinteria Middle School also saw an increase in failing grades, with 3.1% compared to .9% during the 2019-20 school year.

CHS students who failed English language arts or math classes were required to attend summer school, Rigby said. Of those required, 40 students attended and were awarded credit in lieu of their failed grades. Students who did not attend the required summer school must attend an August summer school, prior to the beginning of the 2021-2020 school year.

At CMS, of those who needed to make up their credits, 12 completed summer school.

Rigby also went over Assembly Bill 104 during the meeting, which was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on July 1.

The law aims to help “alleviate the pandemic’s effect on grades and graduation credits,” Rigby said, by creating alternative options for students who failed their grades, such as allowing students to retake their grade level, changing letter grades to “pass” or “no pass” and allowing exemptions for specific graduation requirements. The law also allows students in high school to take a fifth year if needed.

CUSD to offer independent study

For the 2021-22 school year, CUSD will be offering a distance learning option via independent study for students who cannot return in person, Rigby said.

Independent study was a voluntary educational model in place prior to the

Covid-19 pandemic.

“We’re still working out the specific details, of which we will share what we’re going to be providing in August,” Rigby said.

The district will have 52 more students – across its campuses – enrolled compared to last year, Rigby said.

Compared to the previous year, Aliso School has 355 students compared to 329; Canalino has 518 compared to 516; the Family School has 72 compared to 63; Summerland School has 54 compared to 48; CMS has 447 compared to 459; and CHS has 680 compared to 659.

“Now, of course, we had a pandemic year, but we are recouping the students that we lost during the pandemic year, and we do expect more students to join us,” Rigby said.

Closed session report

The board held a closed session prior to its regular meeting, discussing anticipated litigation, according to the agenda.

No reportable action was taken, board member Jayme Bray said.

Educational purchases

The board approved the purchase of Bridges Math consumables and teacher kits, which includes student workbooks, home connections, Volumes 1 and 2, and number corner. The total cost of the workbooks and teacher kits is $22,000.

The board also approved the purchase of FOSS Science Kits, which contain science materials needed for grades four and five.This allows all elementary school teachers to introduce three units of science during the upcoming school year.

The total cost of the workbooks is $26,000.

Donations

The board accepted an anonymous donation of $5,000 to the CHS Baseball Club, and a donation of a $200 Vito clarinet to the CHS Band from Debra Tursick.

County granted $2.5 million for incarcerated persons reentry program Santa Barbara County will receive $2,499,999 in Pathway Home grant funds, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff ’s Office and the Santa Barbara County Workforce Development Board announced in early July.

The grant funds will go toward a reentry program that helps individuals incarcerated in the Santa Barbara County Jail or the Santa Barbara Northern Branch Jail secure jobs prior to their release. It serves over 250 individuals, a press release from the Sheriff’s Office and the Workforce Development board said.

“The Santa Barbara County Workforce Development Board is pleased to move forward in partnership with Sheriff Bill Brown and his team, as well as our two community colleges and community-based organizations to provide much need pre-release and post-release services to incarcerated individuals. These services will help to rebuild lives and contribute to the community,” Raymond McDonald, executive director of the Santa Barbara County Workforce Development Board, said.

Sheriff Bill Brown added that the Sheriff’s Office is “honored to be part

of the team that applied for the grant.”

“We are delighted that Santa Barbara County was selected to receive a $2,499,999 grant award, being one of only 28 recipients nationwide. Without a means to make a living and the financial security of a job, there is little chance of a successful reentry into the community for formerly incarcerated people,” he said.

“This Pathway Home grant will allow us to provide – in partnership with Santa Barbara City and Allan Hancock Community Colleges – education and vocational training to people in county custody and will also provide incentive funding to employers who give justice-involved persons a second chance at employment when they are released from jail. We look forward to many successful outcomes and stronger and safer communities as a result of this grant.”

Incarcerated individuals will also continue to be provided with services from America’s Job Center of California as they transition back into the community, with courses such as education and certified training opportunities, supportive services, job search and placement and career counseling and employment plans.

City Council approves lease and development agreement for Surfliner Inn

In a 4–1 vote, with Vice Mayor Al Clark dissenting, the City Council voted Monday during a special meeting to approve the lease disposition and development agreement for 499 Linden Ave., the site of the controversial, proposed Surfliner Inn project.

The final plans for the project will still need to be revised by the developers, and a final ground lease agreement will be approved or rejected at a future public meeting, city staff emphasized.

“I’d like to thank everyone for coming and attending (...) and making our process a little bit easier,” Mayor Wade Nomura said at the beginning of the meeting.

Matt Roberts, director of city Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities, provided the staff report for the meeting. He clarified that the lease disposition and development agreement (LDDA) is for leasing the land only, not selling it.

Under the proposed contract, the lease would be rented to 499 Linden Managers, the developers, for 55 years for 5.5% of appraised fair market value in annual base rent, paid to the city monthly. The developers will also pay the city 4.5% of gross revenue generated by the inn.

City Attorney Matt Carlson said the construction budget would be around $12 million, with a cost of roughly $35,000 per room; the inn is expected to have a three-diamond rating by AAA. From the project, the city is projected to receive, annually, $165,000 from the ground lease itself; $385,000 from the transient occupancy taxes; $64,000 in sales tax; and $7,000 in property taxes.

A conceptual hearing in November 2020 provided the public with tentative plans for what the inn might look like.

It will tentatively have 36 guest rooms, four guest suites, a manager’s unit (for a manager who will be on site 24/7), a public rooftop bar, a rooftop event space; a “guest only” rooftop swimming pool area; and a public street level cafe with inside and outside dining.

Roberts said the developers and the city also worked out several off-site improvements for the “benefit of the public,” which include a new public parking lot with 83 spaces, located south of the railroad tracks, west of Linden Avenue and east of Holly Avenue, on undeveloped city-owned property; 16 additional spaces to Parking Lot #3; the relocation of the public restroom currently standing on Parking Lot #3 to vacant property, closer to the beach; and the creation of a new trail extension, connecting Linden Avenue to Holly Avenue.

In regard to parking, the inn would not have any exclusive parking, Roberts said.

“They would rely entirely on public parking,” he said, thus the reason for the developer-funded expansion of public parking.

All of the above improvements would be funded by the developers, not the city, Roberts emphasized.

Roberts noted that the plans will be revised; he said the developers of the project wanted the confirmation of the approval of an LDDA before “investing those funds into new plans.”

If the ground lease is approved, the developer will begin with the off-site improvements listed above, before beginning construction of the Surfliner Inn itself.

During the meeting, Surfliner Inn partner Whitt Hollis thanked the city staff for their work.

93013 Fund distributes small business grants, announces end to Covid-relief activities After more than a year of responding to local impacts brought on by Covid-19, the 93013 Fund has announced an end to its relief efforts in Carpinteria Valley.

The fund, a program of Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset, distributed three $1,000 small business grants – to Whimsy Antiques, Bon Fortune and UCP Work Inc. — in early June to wrap up its recovery program.

“We worked quickly at the start of the pandemic and were able to adapt as the pandemic continued to drive community needs. Small businesses were still struggling from last year’s losses, so we designated the last of our funds to the final three grant applicants,” said Hans Brand, president of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset Charitable Foundation.

“Our Advisory Committee has been incredibly dedicated and effective in identifying and addressing community needs so we’ve had a really positive impact. The community of Carpinteria was very generous with their donations and entrusted us all with this local response.”

In all, over 200 donors contributed roughly $200,000 in amounts ranging from $10 to $10,000. The 93013 Fund distributed over 40,000 meals, senior care supplies, school supplies for distance learning, nonprofit support, childcare scholarships and small business grants.

All funds were spent on causes in Carpinteria Valley and whenever possible, purchases were made directly from local businesses.

Early in the pandemic, the Advisory Committee met weekly to discuss

community priorities and strategies to bring about the greatest impact.

The 93013 Fund initially partnered with The Farm Cart Organics to provide 400 food boxes delivered to workforce housing and school sites every week through June of 2020. Then, the fund delivered 300 meals every week from restaurants to the residences of seniors throughout the summer of 2020. Students in Carpinteria Unified School District received distance-learning supply kits from the fund in spring and fall of 2020.

The fund also provided scholarships to childcare programs to help families return to work. When schools reopened, the fund provided each school parent

group funding to support classroom safety needs. The fund also provided nonprofit grants to keep the lights on as well as small business grants to over 20 businesses in Carpinteria Valley.

As pandemic recovery needs fade, 93013 Fund advisory committee members have pivoted their focus to another long-simmering community cause: constructing the Carpinteria Skatepark.

The Carpinteria Skate Foundation has pushed to build a park for over 10 years and has plans and permits in hand to break ground. It needs to raise a further $300,000 to commence construction this year on a world-class skatepark next to Carpinteria City Hall. Donations can be made at carpskatefoundation.org.

EXPLORING THE VALLEY’S WILD AND CULTIVATED SPACES

ALENA STEEN Thriving farm economies are an integral lifeway in California. Since the last century, the mild climate and fertile inland and coastal valleys of much of the state have filled with farms and orchards producing an incredible amount of food for both domestic and international export. Agriculture as a way of life has a lot of emotional resonance with families who have had a relationship with the land for generations as well – this certainly remains true in Carpinteria, where there are many second or third generation family farms still growing for local and international markets. However, the farming landscape throughout California is shifting rapidly and Carpinteria is no exception.

According to Santa Barbara County’s most recent Census of Agriculture, the number of active farms in the county has decreased by 8% since 2012. However, the size of an average farm has increased by 11%, reflecting a trend present throughout the country. The majority of farmers in Santa Barbara County are over 60 years old, with only a tiny fraction of total farmers in the county under the age of 35.

Farming is an incredibly difficult way of life at best – profit margins are generally tight, and the work is hard, ever-present and constantly changing. Skyrocketing land prices in coastal California have only added to the pressure on small family farms. As older farmers age out of the business, the next generation has a very compelling reason to sell. This farmland is either absorbed into much larger, more industrial farms which are heavily geared towards export, or becomes developed into single family estates.

The widespread loss of working farmland and skilled farmers has profound implications for our future. Preserving farmland is an essential element of a more climate-resilient, food-secure and equitable California. Large-scale carbon capture on working lands shows incredible promise in reducing the harm of

Irrigated farmland is an essential buffer zone between California’s fire-prone wildlands and city and town centers. intensive agriculture, which is one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions in California. While conventional agriculture is currently one of the drivers of our rapidly changing climate, via both plant and animal production, there are incredible opportunities for the reverse to be true while actually increasing our food yields.

We can build a future where agriculture reduces our collective carbon pollution and mitigates some of the most severe effects of our rapidly changing climate.

Responsible farming practices capture carbon, foster greater biodiversity, protect collapsing insect populations, recharge groundwater stores, build healthy, living soils and maintain a buffer between urban and rural zones which becomes increasingly important as wildland events such as fires and floods become more frequent.

As one example of the importance of sustainable agriculture, there is promis-

ing research occurring in Santa Barbara County to study the effects of “carbon farming” (also known as carbon sequestration) on working rangelands. Steps such as applying a thin layer of compost on working lands or removing or reducing mechanical tillage greatly reduce the need for nitrogen-heavy chemical fertilizers, improve soil health and increase water retention. Increasing soil’s organic matter content increases its ability to sequester atmospheric carbon, thus reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.

In riparian zones, farms that maintain robust native hedgerows and river habitats are also essential to slow and weaken the force of flood events.

These complicated, globe-spanning issues are reflected in the recent proposal to build high-density housing in Carpinteria’s rural buffer zone on Bailard Avenue on the site of a working, organic farm.

It is a profound mistake to pave over or develop any remaining farmland in our town. Creating pockets of biodiversity and soil health for carbon and water capture are of lasting value for Carpinteria.

Additionally, this farm grows food for our local community, in stark contrast to many other farms in Santa Barbara County. According to a 2011 study, 99% of the produce grown in the county is exported, while 95% of the produce we consume in the county is imported, which increases our collective carbon footprint and leaves us vulnerable to global supply chain disruptions.

It is absolutely essential to our future that farmland be protected and preserved, while providing current farmers and landowners with the education and resources necessary to begin shifting their farming practices to more sustainable, localized and climate-forward methods without a loss in revenue. It is equally essential to train the next generation of farmers and create pathways for land access and farm ownership for first generation farmers. We need honest, sustained conversations about the interplay of responsible farming practices, equitable food access and the cost and benefit of exporting our precious water resources.

As the last few years have shown us time and again, major and unpredictable weather events are the new normal, and it is of utmost importance to begin weaving a web of more sustainable agriculture which honors and conserves the limited resources that are reality in southern California.

“Small Town Big Art” book celebrates 100 Carpinteria artists Carpinteria’s vibrant artist community is both the subject and the beneficiary of a stunning new coffee table book entitled “Small Town Big Art: 100 Artists of Carpinteria.” Presale orders are now underway for the book, which is scheduled for release this fall.

David Powdrell, former chair of the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center, conceived of the book as an expression of gratitude for the local arts community, which poured its support into the arts center while Powdrell was board chair from 2010-2019. During his tenure, the center underwent an extensive expansion and remodel, and at every step, Carpinteria artists generously contributed their energy, expertise and art.

“The artists of Carpinteria are diverse, they’re wildly creative, they’re bold and brave and they’re all so fun to be around.

This book aims to acknowledge them as accomplished artists, but more importantly, it is my way of saying thank you,” Powdrell said.

Proceeds of “Small Town Big Art” will benefit the arts center thanks to underwriters whose contributions covered all the costs of producing the book. “With that kind of support,” Powdrell said, “it was a no-brainer that 100% of each sale would be donated to the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center. The local artists win, the community wins, the arts center wins.”

The 12x12 inch hardback contains twopage spreads dedicated to each of the 100 artists, which run the gamut from chefs, dancers and potters, to painters, poets and musicians. Featured artists are showcased with professional portraits, several images of their works and a short Q&A that highlights their relationships with art and with Carpinteria.

Production of “Small Town Big Art” in-

volved the contributions of many volunteer photographers, editors and graphic designers. Powdrell worked closely with a small team made up of art community supporters Marco Rigonati, Christie Boyd, Janey Cohen and Lea Boyd.

“Dreams really can come true when you surround yourself with passionate,

artistic, creative people with a common vision and a powerful and important message. The arts matter!” Powdrell said.

Carpinteria author releases poetry collection

Carpinteria author Alec Burquez has released a new book of poetry, “What the Dark Whispers: A Poetry Collection for Midnight,” published by Dorrance Publishing and illustrated by Charlie Bruton.

The poetry collection focuses on “people who find comfort in the moonlight rather than the sunlight,” a press release for the book states. “(It’s) for people who find it easier to walk in the dark and who yearn for someone to accompany them. For people who struggle with the dark and want to find someone who understands and whispers to them in the dark.”

The collection will resonate with people who struggle with depression, anxiety, loneliness and dark thoughts, said Burquez. The author hopes that “What the Dark Whispers” will show people that “they are not alone in their thoughts and feelings…”

PHOTOS BY ROBIN KARLSSON On July 14, Carpinterians flocked to Canalino Elementary School for a free meal and concert, courtesy of No Kid Hungry, a nonprofit organization that provides all children under the age of 18 free meals throughout the summer. This year, No Kid Hungry served free lunch at dozens of locations across Santa Barbara County.

Along with free meals, the organization also put on a free concert series which last week brought youth musicians and DJs to perform at Canalino.

“Every child should have access to healthy, nutritious food so they can fulfill their potential. Programs like No Kid Hungry’s summer concert series ensure families can count on at least one healthy meal when school is out or when a parent is struggling to find work,” said Rep. Salud Carbajal “I am so thankful for the work No Kid Hungry and our local food banks do to address food insecurity among children in our community. CLUB SCENE New Rotary Club presidents meet

Last week, Carpinteria’s three Rotary Clubs met for a barbeque celebration of their newly elected presidents. The clubs’ outgoing presidents also made appearances, passing down their crowns in a coronation ceremony. Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noontime’s past president, Paul Wright, emceed the event, and congratulated the past presidents for meeting Covid-19 challenges head-on.

Carpinteria Future Farmers of America (FFA) program director Sal Lopez spoke to Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning over Zoom recently, showing how the FFA program teaches its students life skills.

Students from FFA took care of their animals seven days a week, nurturing and raising them from the time they were younglings, explained Lopez. FFA launched a virtual market to help students sell their animals after the cancelation of the Ventura County Fair.

0839 hrs / Warrant Arrest / Granada Way

A resident called in to report a suspicious person in the area. Deputies contacted the man, who they discovered had two warrants out for his arrest. He was arrested and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.

1815 hrs / Graffiti / 1400 block Linden Avenue

CVN takes a trip to Oahu

Stan and Karen Fix took the June 17, 2021 edition of CVN along with them while they explored the island of Oahu, visiting Pearl Harbor and the Arizonian Memorial during the Fourth of July weekend.

A resident called in to report a male spray painting an office on the 1400 block of Linden Avenue. Five individuals were seen running from the area when deputies arrived. Four were later found nearby with graffiti tools and matching spray paint on their hands. All were seen earlier in the day at the St. Joseph Festival wearing clothing and hats representing a Santa Barbara gang. Three of the four were juveniles and were later released to family with citations. The adult in the group, a 19-year-old, was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

2045 hrs / Traffic Collision / Linden Avenue and Sandyland Road

A gray or silver colored Mercedes was traveling southbound on Linden Avenue before it rear-ended another vehicle that was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Sandyland Road and Linden Avenue. The Mercedes backed up, turned around and fled the scene northbound on Linden Avenue and then eastbound on Carpinteria Avenue before a witness, who was following the vehicle, lost sight of the vehicle near Motel 6. No injuries were reported initially, but after some time went by, one passenger of the victim’s vehicle was transported to the hospital for head, neck and back pain.

A reporting party called in and stated that sometime within the last week, an unknown suspect removed the license plate from their trailer. A report was taken and the plate was entered into the system.

Hello from New Orleans

Kimberly Cory, left, and her granddaughter Haven Martinez brought CVN along with them on a trip to New Orleans for Martinez’s high school graduation gift. Martinez, who graduated from Righetti High School in Santa Maria, stayed with her grandmother at the Avenue Plaza in the Garden District.

The pair took several trips throughout New Orleans, including the French Quarter, Louis Armstrong Park, the Oak Alley plantation, ghost and cemetery tours, and their favorite – the swamp tour – where Cory and Martinez saw many alligators, turtles and birds.

A reporting party stated the catalytic converter to her vehicle was stolen two weeks ago. The vehicle was parked on Birch Street in front of her residence.

1946 hrs / Grand Theft / Avenue Del Mar

A victim discovered that one of her bags that contained about $10,000 in cash and about $10,000 worth of jewelry was taken from inside her summer vacation home.

Wednesday, July 14

0034 hrs / Damage / Concha Loma Drive

A reporting party called and reported that an unknown suspect had overturned

her trashcans in her driveway and broke the door handle on the glass slider leading to her kitchen. The reporting party checked her home for missing items, but at the time of the report, she had not reported any items that were missing from her home.

0135 hrs / Unlicensed Driver / Casitas Pass Road and Carpinteria Avenue

A deputy observed a vehicle approaching Carpinteria Avenue from Casitas Pass Road drive through the red light without stopping. Upon contacting the vehicle, it was learned that the driver did not have a driver’s license. She was cited for failing to stop at the red light and being unlicensed.

Thursday, July 15

1014 hrs / Warrant Arrest / Carpinteria Post Office

A woman, who was known to have two active warrants, was observed getting into a truck. A traffic stop was conducted, and she was arrested for her felony and misdemeanor warrants.

Friday, July 16

1137 hrs / Drugs and Expired Registration / Carpinteria and Reynolds avenues

A vehicle was pulled over for having expired registration. The driver was found to be on probation and a search of the vehicle yielded a usable amount of meth in the center console. Both parties said it was not theirs, so they were both charged with possession. The driver admitted to having a baggie of meth and a meth pipe in his sock, so he got an additional charge. Both were arrested, booked into Santa Barbara County Jail and the vehicle was towed.

1240 hrs / Found Drugs / Carpinteria and Reynolds avenues

During the same car stop as described above, a woman approached deputies and handed over a baggie of meth that she said she just found on the sidewalk on Carpinteria Avenue, just east of Reynolds Avenue.

1114 hrs / Fraud / Cravens Lane

A victim had about $80,000 stolen from two of her online accounts.

1146 hrs / Theft / Hwy 101 northbound near Santa Monica on-ramp

A reporting party, who works for Granite Construction, reported that a towable industrial pressure washer was stolen from a construction site sometime between July 9 and July 15.

1816 hrs / DUI / 400 block Linden Avenue

A reporting party observed a suspected DUI driver and followed the vehicle to the parking lot at the Amtrak Station.

Deputies arrived on scene and contacted the suspect. During investigation, it was learned the driver was intoxicated. The driver declined field sobriety tests and he was arrested for driving under the influ-

SoCal Edison and the city were advised of the damage. The driver and passenger declined to be seen by medics.

That innate tug CVN

UNPREDICTABLE WILDERNESS CHUCK GRAHAM Approximately two hours of light remained when I left ragged Kinton Point on the western fringe of Santa Cruz Island. Sea conditions across the Santa Cruz Passage were sublime – glassy, flawless and without swell, a rare sight indeed. It looked really good with sunset approaching over Santa Rosa Island looming on the horizon. I aimed my kayak for the long, gritty finger of Skunk Point six miles away. When I finally landed just before dark, the beach began to shift.

With dusk weighing heavy on me, sea salt-crusted eyes and general fatigue settling in after a full 28 miles of paddling, it was a challenge for me to decipher what I was straining to see. When I got down on all fours, I realized then that it was a colossal squadron of western snowy plovers, all picking up at once – one of the heartiest shorebirds anywhere enjoying a deserted beach. It’s the only location across the entire Channel Islands National Park chain where I’ve seen them in great numbers and for good reason. Every day they experience an undisturbed habitat. They enjoy a monumental flotsam of bleached driftwood and mounds of tattered kelp loaded with a smorgasbord of kelp flies and beach hoppers. There are no people.

So, it was a pleasant surprise this past spring, while running with my head down in soft sand first on the City Beach in Carpinteria, then the State Beach, when I ran into the roped off area between the Carpinteria Creek and Tarpits protecting a western snowy plover nest just beyond the high tide mark. It was the third week of May, and the three olive-colored, speckled eggs were protected by a cage to fend off raccoons, skunks, crows and gulls.

Pure joy and excitement settled in, but so did a bout of anxiety for these tough little shorebirds who hadn’t realized a

When I first laid eyes on the nest, the challenges of survival mounted with every incoming tide. It would be a daily gauntlet on one of the more crowded and popular beaches and campgrounds in Southern California. Yet, the male and female felt that innate urge to nest on a beach that once flourished with plovers.

“Western snowy plovers were once more widely distributed and abundant in coastal Washington, Oregon and California, and they definitely have an innate understanding of what to look for when selecting a site to breed,” said David Sherer, wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Ventura.

“We may not always understand their choices, and I’m not sure what drew this pair to the beach at Carpinteria, but they saw something that we didn’t that made the decision to nest there pay off.”

On the morning of June 8, just after 8 a.m. the three eggs hatched, right out of the eggs the chicks were mobile. A little wobbly on their long legs, the chicks were quickly feeding on kelp flies and beach hoppers and watching over them was their fearless, vigilant father. Their moth-

Two plover chicks nuzzle each other, fending off any morning chill. er was long gone, leaving right after her brood was mobile, only to start another family on some other distant shore.

It was amazing having three eggs hatch, but now the hard work ensued. All day every day the protective father warded off a throng of threats to its chicks.

During one 40-minute stretch, I watched it thwart four attempts by marauding crows. Relying on its broken wing phase, the western snowy plover dad successfully lured the predators away. The same occurred with a western gull that wandered inside the perimeter of the roped off area.

The dad also had no problem putting itself between dogs (not allowed on the State Beach) while its chicks concealed themselves in mounds of giant bladder kelp and European skyrocket. Sometimes the plovers’ best defense was standing firm and utilizing their camouflage on the windswept beach.

That went on for 30 days until they fledged, on their own, leaving the protective wings of their doting father. That meant surviving the summer crowds, the Fourth of July festivities and the ever-present gulls and crows. Every time I went for a visit I braced myself for not seeing all three chicks and the dad. However, they got a big helping hand from the State Beach lifeguards who gave these shorebird summer stars a boost in survival. Every day the lifeguards coned off a wider perimeter beyond the roped area, extending it down to the water’s edge with no one allowed to walk through the

plovers’ turf.

In the meantime, the dad continued his ardent watch over his growing cotton fluffs with long legs and overgrown feet, something they were born with but serves them well in survival.

On July 9, the more adventurous chick of the three flew off. On July 13, the dad was still watching over the remaining two chicks, but a couple days later they were all gone. Nesting season for snowy plovers stretches into September, so the roped off area will remain until then.

“It’s my hope that we see more plovers return to their historic nesting sites at Carpinteria and elsewhere,” continued Sherer. “These little birds are very charismatic and capture the hearts of those who work with them. The public, too, is increasingly interested in conserving our natural heritage, which plovers are a part of, and there are easy steps we can all take to be good neighbors for plovers and other beach nesting birds.

Keeping dogs on leashes, respecting the boundaries of nesting areas, and picking up after ourselves (to avoid leaving tasty treats that might attract predators) are all simple ways that we can better share the shore with wildlife.”

Longtime city employee Kevin Silk has retired after 26 years with the city, having tackled the Thomas Fire, acquisitions of Bluffs 1 and 3 and El Nino rains during his long tenure serving the public. This month, Silk retired from his position as assistant to the city manager.

Silk, who has lived in Carpinteria with his wife, Jan, since 1990, began working for the city on a part-time basis in 1994, before he was hired full time in 1996, he said.

“Working with the city was a great opportunity for me and my family,” he said.

During his time at the city, he worked on a number of projects, including the First Friday Committee and events, tackling the city’s web page, the city’s economic development plan strategy, the city grant program for community service providers, and overseeing the city’s public television programming and broadcasting.

He said he was fortunate to have “great relationships with my co-workers as well as council members over the years.”

“I felt that not only did I have a professional relationship with them, but also shared friendships and comraderie,” he said.

Silk also cited his relationship with City Manager Dave Durflinger as one he will remember; the two have worked together for over two decades, he said. “(Durflinger) is such a great role model

of hard work, fairness and dedication, and was always ready to share a good laugh,” Silk said.

Silk’s friends and family saw him off last Saturday with a party at the Alcazar Theatre. Silk said he was humbled by the people who celebrated his retirement and acknowledged his contributions to the city. “(I) just wanted to thank the community of Carpinteria for all their support over the years, and for all the friends and family and community members that showed up to celebrate my retirement on Saturday. I’m so appreciative and humbled by everybody showing up,” he said.

“Thank you so much and thank you city of Carpinteria.”

He advised that as a Carpinterian, you should “never honk at another car while driving in Carpinteria … you will likely know them. They could be a councilmember, or they might become your future children’s in-laws,” he laughed.

Silk added that it is important to him to remember that as a city employee, one serves the “diverse needs of the entire community.” He said he hopes he made a positive difference for the Carpinteria community, and that the city is better off for his efforts.

Next, Silk hopes to set up a small home studio to record music with his son Evan.

He also hopes to travel more with his wife and family – and maybe, just maybe, buy a scooter to get around town on.

Adult co-ed softball league back in action after a year off

Carpinteria’s adult softball league has started up again, after being forced to cancel a year ago due to Covid-19 restrictions, and the teams representing five local businesses are finding a way to have fun in the sun once again.

“I’m thankful to be able to bring a little normalcy back to the community after the pandemic,” said Ray Cardenas, the commissioner of the league who has been running the league in recent years.

The league has been part of Carpinteria summers for two decades, originally run by Reynaldo’s Bakery co-owner Joe Cardenas, whose son Joey (Jr.) also served as commissioner for two years

before Ray took over. Games used to be played at El Carro Park and Carpinteria High School, which have included Sunday leagues for men and tournaments during the Avocado Festival, but currently the games are being held at Viola Fields on the Carpinteria Bluffs.

After a year off, Cardenas decided to round up the teams and get the competition back in full swing. Although there are only five teams this year compared to the usual of over 10 teams, the five teams representing local businesses have a fun and competitive rivalry with each other.

“My favorite part of the league is the gathering of the community for some friendly competition,” Cardenas said.

“The rivalry is fierce between a few of the teams, but after the games are played the tensions ease and they are able to have a few laughs about it.”

The five teams this season include Island Brewing Company, brewLAB, Little Fish By the Sea Day Care, The Good Plow and George Manuras Construction.

Players range in age from 20 to 50-plus

years old, and although there is a playoff tournament in late August, many of the participants are there for friends, fun and a chance to return to social activities – something that has been sorely missed during the pandemic.

The league also does its part by promoting businesses, encouraging exercise and most of all, a sense of normalcy and togetherness.

“I believe this helps the community by coming together with a shared interest in recreational sports and healthy competition, while also promoting local business,” Cardenas said.

A three-game kick-off on July 13 started off the six-week season, and on the first day of competition brewLAB got off to a great start, winning its first two games back-to-back by defeating both Island Brewing Company and The Good Plow. George Manuras Construction took a victory over Little Fish.

The games will be held on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. each week, ending with a Saturday playoff tournament on Aug. 28.

Warriors girls volleyball tryouts, latest details on gym upgrades

Carpinteria High School girls volleyball will be holding two days of tryouts from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 2 to Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Mickey Caughey, who will be coaching the junior varsity squad this year, said that it has yet to be determined whether tryouts will be held at the high school’s gym – which is receiving a few upgrades for the summer – or at Carpinteria Middle School.

The gymnasium is set to begin modernization upgrades as part of Measure U, a three-phase district project that will upgrade the campus with new portables, a science wing and plaza at the school’s entrance. Construction for the gym upgrades began in July and is anticipated to be completed in February. Upgrades include a fresh varnish on the wood floor and new backboards. The team plans on using the court as soon as it is available.

“It will be really nice to get back into our own gym as we’re all excited for it’s grand re-opening,” Caughey said. “If the gym is not completed, we will then have our tryouts at Carpinteria Middle School and maybe even conduct some practices there until our gym is ready.”

The program’s parent/player orientation meeting will be held on Aug. 12 following the varsity practice, and the girls will play in Bishop Diego’s Varsity Tournament at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21. The team’s first official match will be a non-league home game against Newbury Park at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2 with league play starting at home against Santa Paula on Sept. 14.

Warrior athletics programs are gearing up for a full season of sports this year, and some are even preparing for a run at a CIF title with strong rosters returning from last year.

“Boys water polo will be CIF contenders with a strong core coming back,” said Charles Bryant, assistant athletic director at Carpinteria High School.

Football players have been practicing Monday through Friday, and “are eagerly awaiting the start of the season with a full schedule,” Bryant said. “(Coach) Mario Robinson and his staff are extremely dedicated.”

Track and field and cross country athletes have been staying in shape over summer; some have even competed in the “All Comers” meets that have been organized by coach Van Latham over the past few weeks.

The girls tennis program has been hosting weekly “tennis mixers” from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, which are open to the community. People are encouraged to come and trade volleys with the team for a $5 donation to support the program.

The girls are set to begin daily practices, conditioning and tryouts starting on Friday, Aug 13.

Carpinteria’s Junior Guards of the Week

After each week of the summer program, Carpinteria’s Junior Lifeguards selects six participants who embody the spirit of the guard and show great sportsmanship and attitude. These Guards of the Week are the “best on the beach” in Carpinteria.

Hazel Postma is described by program coordinator Leilanie Silva as “one of our smiliest junior guards.” Postma has performed well at water flags and run-swimrun events this summer. “She pushes herself to her full potential and is always encouraging others. Hazel is great at water flags and run-swim-run,” Silva said.

Axel Nordholm is one of the best paddlers and most energetic kids in the program. “Axel is always ready for whatever workout, and in his words ‘sends it.’

He’s a great motivator and strong kid that keeps the other junior guards moving,” Silva said. Nordholm is excited and ready to show off his skills against the other agencies in competition this weekend.

Canyon Atkinson is a well-rounded athlete, but instructors said he “crushes it” in the paddling. Atkinson is at home in the water, and has continued to grow as an athlete in the three weeks of training. “When we went to Rincon for surf day, I only saw him get out of the water for minutes and then he went back in,” Silva said.

Lili Nemetz is described as one of the “happiest” kids in the program. She has consistently come to training with a great attitude and is always ready to do her best in every exercise. “She is a great athlete and a hard worker,” Silva said. “She is always cheering on her peers and being a great friend to everyone in the program.”

Guilia Piccoletti has an “amazing attitude,” and is an “outstanding athlete,” according to her instructors. Although she is one of the more quiet kids in the group, Silva said she regularly surprises and comes in at the top of workouts. “Her kind energy helps support the other junior guards and we always see her cheering on others,” Silva said.

Izzy Scott has a “phenomenal growth mindset,” and instructors said she is always seeking to improve and overcome adversity. “She’s overcome every challenge we’ve set and always finishes strong and sets a new goal,” Silva said. “She works hard and is a competitor in every event and is excited to compete at regionals.”
