At approximately 9:10 p.m., on Wednesday, July 4, Sheriff’s Deputies in Carpinteria responded to a report that 35-year-old Carpinteria-resident Alfonso Garcia Diaz was making suicidal statements.

The caller did not know where Diaz was at the time she called. Deputies searched the area, but were unsuccessful in locating Diaz to check his welfare.

Approximately one hour later, at 10:08 p.m., the same person called to report Diaz was now in the area of Maple Avenue and Citrus Place. Several deputies responded to the area and began searching for Diaz. Within minutes, a patrol sergeant saw Diaz in front of an apartment building and directed his patrol vehicle’s spotlight toward him. Diaz suddenly pointed a black handgun at the sergeant, threatened him and ran into a nearby apartment.

Linden Bridge is falling down. Construction workers continue to clear away debris from the old Linden Avenue overpass which was demolished as part of the Hwy 101 Project.

Nighttime freeway closures continue

Demolition will continue at Casitas Pass Road overcrossing on Thursday, July 12, to remove the old overcrossing.

As progress continues on the Hwy 101 Project, midweek closures should be expected on the northbound side of Hwy 101 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. from Linden Avenue to Casitas Pass Road throughout the week of July 16 to 20. Regular night closure detours will be in place on Bailard, Carpinteria and Santa Ynez avenues.

Additionally, the southbound Hwy 101 off-ramp at Linden Avenue will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, July 16.

Carpinteria home values soar

Mid-year reports show year-over-year home value index up 9 percent

By DeBra Herrick At present, the median home value in Carpinteria is $895,000. Sound high? It is.

Median home prices have risen 9 percent year-over-year from March 2017 to 2018 in Carpinteria, according to the Zillow Home Value Index.

“This is good news for people who own real estate,” says Peter Rupert of the UCSB Economic Forecast Project. “If you look at the average return for most assets, stocks, etc., the return is roughly about 4 to 8 percent.” Nine percent is not typical.

Rupert expects that Carpinteria’s home value growth will decline and even off in the 4 or 5 percent range over the course of the next few years.

But, to be clear, while the growth rate will decline, that does not mean that home prices will fall.

“The housing market looks healthy,” says Rupert. “It’s the stronger end of growth, but, is it crazy looking? I wouldn’t say ‘yes.’ If you see it growing at 15 percent across a year, you can bet you’ll see it fall.”

Sustained growth is the sign of a healthy market, and while the 9 percent increase Carpinteria has experienced in the last year might be volatile and likely to even off around 4 to 5, it’s not an indication of a housing bubble, according to Rupert.

Carpinteria experienced extraordinary growth in 2013—a 20 percent uptick in one year’s span—followed by only a 3 percent increase in 2014. Since the second half of 2014, though, the city has had sustainable growth and Zillow predicts housing prices to steadily increase next year at a rate of 5.2 percent.

But it’s important to remember that because Carpinteria is so small, just a few big sales will impact growth indicators. When one house sells at $12 million, it could swing the needle, according to Rupert.

While Carpinteria has inched within 93 percent of its previous peak in 2007, home values county-wide are 15 percent below the 2007 peak.

Inventory in Carpinteria is low and prices are high—only six single family homes are currently listed on Trulia for less than $1 million.

With the median Carpinteria home value at nearly $900,000 and the median household income at $72,901, according to the most recent U.S. Census (2016), the disconnect between home prices and purchase power for Carpinteria’s first time home owners continues to grow.

Moreover, as the national economy continues to improve, federal interest rates are on the rise.

We’re building some low income and rental apartments, but we’re not building a lot of single family homes for real people and that means that real people will either purchase a condo or pay more.

There will be a point when real people can’t pay any more money.

“My concern is for the middle class.

We’re not building housing for the middle class.”

That said, home prices will not be dropping any time soon, according to lampson, who points to more supply than demand in the real estate market.

Many of the home buyers in the area are not working fulltime in south Santa Barbara County. Their purchase power is coming from a different local or global economic ecosystem. “our economy (in Carpinteria) is not growing, but the people who want to buy here, their economies are growing. out of towners, second homes, people coming from the Bay Area—” said lampson.

Aside from high prices, there is also not a ton of people moving away from Carpinteria, added lampson, “once people are in Carpinteria they never leave. Most people buy a house and hunker down.”

“Right now the Carpinteria real estate market outlook is positive, so I would encourage both buyers and sellers to make the decision based on what their life goals are,” said Stephanie Theimer, a local realtor for Compass, “For me, real estate is personal. It’s not simply a numbers game. Sure, at a certain level there is always the ‘I should have bought then’ or the ‘I should have sold earlier.’

“There is a ton of opportunity on both sides right now which is exciting—if you are thinking of making a move, it’s not a bad time.”

Nevertheless, Rupert advises taking a step back when looking at home values as an economic indicator, “I don’t like to pull out one aspect of the economy like housing, I want to look at the broad brush.

Everything is looking pretty strong. The unemployment rate is holding steady or even falling. “overall, our area is doing well. Carpinteria is doing well, California is doing well, just like the rest of the economy— not too overheated.”

Rotary Club launches new charitable way to grant kids’ wishes

Through a new Rotary project called Make a Kid Smile, businesses, organizations and individuals can fulfill the specific athletic, artistic or educational needs of local children. Here’s how it works: Children submit their requests, which are vetted properly then published regularly in Coastal View News. Readers who choose to grant wishes will have their names printed in CVN alongside their granted wish.

The idea for Make a Kid Smile came to local lawyer Stefanie Herrington after she learned that a Carpinteria teen had missed out on a school trip to New York City due to lack of funds. Herrington, who is past president of Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset and Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, realized that the teen was just one example of many kids whose needs could be met if there were greater awareness. “This new program allows members of our community to connect children to opportunities that would otherwise pass them by,” Herrington said. “The needs have always existed. The generosity has always existed. What didn’t exist was the bridge between the two. Rotary can play matchmaker and connect children to individuals willing to support their passions.”

Phone scammers pose as SCE employees

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office issued a warning to community members after seeing a number of phone scam reports where the caller poses as a Southern California Edison employee. The scammer threatens to disconnect electricity service unless a payment is made immediately using a pre-paid cash card. Scam callers have even left messages with an actual SCE voice mail, making it appear that the call is valid.

The Sheriff’s Office advises that if you receive a call meeting this description, you hang up and call SCE directly to verify your account status and call law enforcement.

SCE does not accept pre-paid cash cards for bill payments. To report scams, call the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-FTC-HELP or visitftc.gov/complaint/.

Joseph Luis Cardenas II 5/4/1973 – 7/4/2018

Joseph Luis Cardenas II passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, surrounded by his family at the age of 45. Joseph was born on May 4, 1973, in Goleta, California.

He is survived by his wife Jenifer Cardenas; four sons Justin Cardenas, Alexander Jeffries, Steven Cardenas and James Cardenas; his mother Anna Marie Ravenscroft; his father and mother, Joseph and Diane Cardenas; his siblings Amanda Hunt (Jason Hunt), Reynaldo Cardenas (Jamie Cardenas), Neosha Bartholic (Marc Bartholic) and Charles Yozgott.

Candace Irene Buchanan (Cota) 1/20/1960 – 6/26/2018

Candace Irene Buchanan (Cota) was born on January 20, 1960 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Her journey on this earth ended on June 26, 2018 in Brentwood, California.

Candace passed peacefully at home surrounded by family after battling stage four metastatic breast cancer since 2017.

Candace attended Carpinteria High School (Class of ‘78) and gave birth in 1979 to her son, Ronnie Buchanan. In 1982 she married the love of her life and best friend James Buchanan at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Carpinteria, California. They welcomed their daughter Brittnie Johnson (Buchanan) in January of 1985. Candace raised her family in Santa Maria, California while working for the Santa Maria Police Department, and multiple local office support roles. Candace enjoyed watching and supporting her children at their many athletic events and was an athlete herself completing marathons and half marathons with her husband.

In 2012, Candace was at her daughter’s side for the birth of her first grandchild, Elijah. Being a Naya, as she was lovingly called by her grandchildren, was her favorite role in life. She cherished each moment with her grandkids and played a significant role in each of their lives.

Candace was able to not only attend but officiate her daughter ’s wedding

Joseph attended Carpinteria Middle School and High School and lived most of his life in Carpinteria. For approximately 10 years preceding his death, he worked alongside his father and brother at the family bakery, Reynaldo’s, in Carpinteria.

Joseph was an incredible husband, father, son, brother and friend. His most important aspiration was to be a father and have a family with whom he could share an unconditional love. His family meant everything to him and his priorities reflected it. With his unparalleled heart, he befriended everyone he knew and could make anyone smile.

This world has truly lost a bright light and he will be missed by all who knew him.

A viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2018, at WelchRyce-Haider Funeral Chapel, 15 E. Sola St., Santa Barbara. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at Carpinteria Cemetery, 1501 Cravens Ln., Carpinteria. Following the memorial service, everyone is welcome to share their memories of Joseph with the family at a reception at Lion’s Park, 6197 Casitas Pass Rd., Carpinteria.

Candace was known for her love of tiedye, sunflowers, camping with her husband in their motorhome, and listening to music in her backyard with a nice cold glass of chardonnay. Candace—always the life of the party—had a knack for making everyone feel loved and special, giving them cute nicknames. She never let her battle hold her down or keep her from living a vibrant positive life.

Candace is preceded in death by her grandparents Cresenciano and Pauline De Alba and John and Rena Cota.

She is survived by her husband James Buchanan, children Ronnie (Blaire) Buchanan and Brittnie (Dylan) Johnson, parents Norman and Mary Cota, sisters Julia (Richard) Stuber, Victoria (Jesse) Pence and brother David Cota. She is also survived by her precious and most cherished grandchildren Elijah, Dominic, Ava and Aubree as well as numerous cousins, aunts and uncles, and nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Candace and her family would like to extend a warm thank you to the many people who called her, sent her gifts, followed her journey on Facebook, prayed for her, visited her and made her laugh.

At 83, one word describes succinctly Clara Soria Davis—effervescent. Born July 27, 1934 in Ventura, California, and spending most of her years in Santa Barbara, Clara loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was a charter member of La Casa de La Raza. Generous and kind, she took in and cared for many families over the years. An entrepreneur, she and her husband Ken built a successful drapery business that remains in the family to this day. Clara and Ken traveled the world and enjoyed every adventure.

Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Deanna Rae Holdaway, age 77, of Richfield, passed away July 9, 2018 in Richfield. She was born June 24, 1941 in Stockton, California, a daughter of Orville and Opal Divily Doescher.

She graduated from Santa Barbara High School, Class of 1958 and then attended Santa Barbara Jr. College. She

Clara was a formidable force, loved life, and lived it with energy and enthusiasm. She had a bright smile and was an inspiration to anyone she met.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Kenneth A. Davis, her mother Louise Garcia Torres and her sisters Frances Madrigal and Alice Paul.

She is survived by her four children and their families, daughters Cynthia Connolly (Ken) and Juliana Mendoza, and sons Kenneth Davis (Helen) and Anthony Davis (Terri). Her 10 grandchildren were all her “Angels”—Melissa Yerou, Robert Mercado, Justin Davis, Manuel Mendoza, Lindsey Connolly, Vincent Mendoza, Jordan Davis and Clarissa Davis. Her latest joy was her great-grandson Kenny Davis.

Higher-than-normal tax rates impact small businesses

The proposed increase in Carpinteria’s sales tax rate to 9 percent will make Carpinteria the highest tax city in the entire county. This 16 percent increase to the existing rate will punish our local businesses and drive customers away to nearby communities where the rate is only 7.25 percent. We already have one of the highest bed tax rates in the county.

Higher-than-normal tax rates make it hard for our local businesses to compete and that results in lower-paying jobs and less opportunity for all.

The city had over $13 million on hand as of the end of last month so we are hardly desperate for money.

Because the proposed tax increase is an increase in the general sales tax rate, there is no requirement that even a penny of the extra money be used for streets and sidewalks. Most likely, the availability of the extra government revenue will set off yet another round of increases in wages, benefits and pensions for public employees plus additional growth in government programs. The proposed tax increase has no sunset date (meaning it will probably never end if passed).

There is no free lunch. Repairs to streets and sidewalks for certain older neighborhoods in need can be paid for by special assessments in those neighborhoods that will benefit directly from those projects without increasing the size and scope of government and hurting our local economy. Better long-range financial planning would benefit Carpinteria.

Bike patrol benefits a small town

I have enjoyed reading the articles about police presence in our little Carp community. We have been residents approximately four years and love Carpinteria. I first noticed police in the area on our first visit and even spoke to a park ranger who recommended The Spot for lunch. Good stuff.

I see the police in our community and admire the way they protect us. I like to read about policing in CVN. I love seeing cops when I am out for a run on the bluffs or on the beach. I worked as a cop for 10 years in the Midwest. As a deputy, I would volunteer to work in a small town with trails as a bike patrol officer. I met visitors to the trails, provided local police presence and got to know business owners and locals on my bike or even on walking patrol. I have often wondered why in this great and small community we don’t see that with our police in Carp.

Our department also subsidized budgets with grants for these positions and others.

I would be interested to see those options visited here or revisited.

Rethinking police contract

I agree with Bob Franco’s letter (“Lunch with two deputies,” CVN, Vol. 24, No. 41).

He refers to the 38 percent of the city’s budget that is spent on police—this is too much for a town of our size that can’t even fund the library. The problem is not the police, they are doing their job. The fault lies with the people in charge of signing and the negotiations. They did a terrible job and the contract should be renegotiated.

What I suggest is that a committee be formed to look into what policing we need in the town and a reduction in the expenses. I would be happy to chair this committee. I live near the beach. I don’t think it’s necessary to have a police car driving around at 2 p.m. on a winter day. This is a waste of money and time.

How many hours of police time is in the contract? How could these hours be cut without an increase in crime? These are just a few questions I have. Before I retired I was a business consultant and my company specialized in cost reduction. I have 50 years of experience in this area. I will gladly volunteer my time on this project.

“Incredibles 2” cVn

duncan’s reel deal M at t d u n c a n Before “Incredibles 2” flew onto the screen at my local theater not a week ago, a special kind of preview came up. It was the voice actors from “Incredibles 2”—Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Samuel L. Jackson and so on—as well as some of the creators.

They wanted to apologize, with utmost earnestness, with heartfelt sincerity, for taking so dang long to make a second “Incredibles” movie. They just knew, deep down, how badly we wanted— nay, needed—yet another superhero movie, and indeed, one featuring none other than them. Imagine that.

Well, all right, maybe they’re right.

We don’t need many more superhero movies, I don’t think, but any time is high time for another “Incredibles” movie.

“Incredibles 2” picks up right where the first one left off. Fresh off vanquishing the evil mastermind, Syndrome, our incredible family of superheroes— Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Huck Milner), Jack-Jack (Eli Fucile) and Mr. Incredible himself (Craig T. Nelson)—are confronted with a new baddie. They immediately spring into action, confront evil, save lives, pursue the enemy, fight the good fight, etc.

And what do they get for their heroism? Arrested. Superheroes are banned, after all. So despite their care for the common folk, they get no love back. One problem is they keep smashing up everything around them. For example, when they fight the aforementioned baddie—a mole-looking guy named Underminder who is trying to rob a bank—they pretty much demolish several city blocks. And they didn’t even stop him. If they would have just left the menacing marsupial alone he would have run away with the cash but nothing and no one would have been harmed.

The other problem is that when the superheroes do their work the only thing the townsfolk ever see is destruction. They don’t witness all the heroic stuff. So they associate superheroes not with heroism, hope, safety and whatnot, but rather, with cataclysm—hence, they don’t like them.

Superheroes are banned. No superheroism allowed.

But at least one guy (aside from the superheroes) wants to change that.

Winston Deaver (Bob Odenkirk), a rich telecommunications tycoon, believes that the world is better off with the supers afoot. So, he along with his sister Evelyn (Catherine Keener), hatch a plan to reshape the masked crusaders’ public image to alleviate the ongoing discrimination against them.

They start with Elastigirl since, in general, she does less destroying than, say, Mr. Incredible. Winston and Evelyn put a tiny camera in Elastigirl’s suit so that when she does her high-speed hijinks, everyone can see that she really is fighting the good fight—that she is putting her life at risk, trying her best to preserve life, limb and infrastructure and doing a pretty darn good job at it, too.

It works. People’s perceptions of

superheroes start to come around.

There is even some talk of lifting the superhero ban.

Meanwhile, Mr. Incredible is in a fight of his own. He’s playing daddy daycare. He’s got to watch the kids while mom goes to work. He first thinks, “I’m tough, no problem.” But, of course, he really is no match for Dash’s math homework or Violet’s boy trouble. Then when Jack-Jack starts exhibiting super powers—uncontrollable ones at that—it’s mayhem at the homestead.

Each parent has their respective task, with respective challenges as well: On the one hand, Jack-Jack is exploding and occasionally popping into another dimension and on the other, evil doers are providing their own kind of challenge for Elastigirl.

But it’s not just the regular villains, or even ones of the super sort, that are tying Elastigirl in knots. Someone else is lurking behind the scenes. This person, whoever they are, is committed to keeping superheroes in the dog house or, even better, the big house.

“Incredibles 2” is a ton of fun. As I said before, it picks up right where the last one left off. And not just storywise. The same charms enchant this superhero family and the same thrills keep this moving humming from start to finish.

Now, with that said, I do have to register that “Incredibles” and, now, “Incredibles 2” are not at the top of my Pixar list. That’s because, while fun and even touching at times, these movies don’t push the envelope like some of the others. They don’t provide the emotional gut punch of, say, the opening montage of “Up.” They don’t evoke that deep sense of poignant sadness that we get at the end of “Inside Out,” or the longing brought on by Jesse’s tale in “Toy Story 2,” or the golden nostalgia found in the ending sequences of “Toy Story 3.” Nor do they offer anything like the biting (yet totally) apt social commentary of “Wall-E.” In short, the “Incredibles” won’t make you cry, or ache or remember; nor will they force you to think too hard.

However, they will make you smile.

“Incredibles 2” is rated PG for action sequences and some brief mild language.

Council votes to review proposals for hotel project

During the July 9, 2018 City Council meeting, the City Council voted 4-1 to close the bid acceptance period and to begin reviewing the two existing proposals for development of a small boutique hotel or inn in the parcel of land known Coastal View News Tel:public (805) parking 684-4428 Thursday, August 31, 2017  7 as City Parking Lot 3 •(the lot located at the Amtrak depot).

Carpinteria Arts Center to visit “50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic”

The Carpinteria Arts Center and the Carpinteria Photography Club are organizing a road trip to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History to view the exhibition “50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic.”

This exhibit will transport visitors behind the lens of some of National Geographic’s most engaging images. From Steve McCurry’s unforgettable Af©2011 NATIONAL GeOGRAPHIC. Combating the price of climate change

LIVING THE GREEN LIFE ERIN MAKER The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) is one of the agencies that tracks the impacts of climate change. This week they stated that June 2018 was the third-hottest June on record. In May, a Columbia University study found that the cloud cover in Southern California has been decreasing for decades, leading to an increased risk of wildfires. These are just two of many indications that our climate is changing.

Climate change is sometimes discussed as a political issue, so let’s pause for a moment to revisit what we are talking about, factually. The important thing to note right now is that while there has been a debate on whether global warming, or climate change, is sped up by human-

caused activities, there has not been a debate on whether or not the climate is changing. It is. It always has been and will continue to as long as the planet exists.

The “greenhouse effect” has also been happening as long as the earth has had an atmosphere, so this is not a new area of scientific study. What is new is the rate at which the climate is changing.

Here in our small coastal community we are feeling those impacts. I have heard multiple people talk about how there used to be more rain and fewer heat waves. While in most cases those conversations are personal observations, they are correct. Let’s use an example we are all familiar with—hot pavement. As urban areas expand, ground temperature increases because pavement and many other building materials radiate heat back into the atmosphere. That heat, combined with the overall global temperatures rising, chases away cloud cover. Less cloud cover means further increase of the ground temperature, and so on.

Back to the NOAA headline. As of June of this year, climate-related disaster in the United States has cost $6 billion. That is a billion a month for 2018. I know that I feel on edge every time we have a hot wind, worrying about fire. Rain forecasts equally stress me out. We experienced two major disasters in a very short period of time that were climate related, and I think most of us were traumatized by those events.

Climate change doesn’t mean we will just see rising temperatures, it means that we see greater extremes of all types of weather. Larger hurricanes, more extreme winter storms, heavier rainfall, longer drought and year-round risk of wildfire.

Many of those things have happened in the first six months of 2018 around the U.S. With summer heat waves upon us, there is an additional concern for everyone locally—heat related power outages.

Being at the end of the Southern California Edison grid, we have less energy resiliency. When heat waves kick in and air conditioning starts cranking, the

energy grid feels the impact and we are susceptible to rolling blackouts. Keeping cool is important, so there are a few recommendations we can all implement. Try to conserve energy in other ways. Keep curtains closed to keep homes cool during the day. Stay in the shade and make sure to drink a lot of water, as heat stroke is very real and very dangerous.

I don’t have the answer to combating the damage already done that is increasing the rate of climate change but moving forward, we can all make choices to help reduce further risk. Building smarter, preserving natural environments and reducing heat-radiating things like paved areas are encouraged in new and re-development. On an individual level, conserving resources has an impact—if every individual conserves in small ways the overall impact could be great.

The tunes that Generation Z listens will be ingrained in their beings for the rest of their lives. Five Carpinteria teens and music Lilibeth Castillo, 18, Margo Lesnoy, 15, Leila Machart, 14, Celeste Castillo, 14, and Lorissa , 18—shared their expertise on what tunes have been filling the headphones of the iGen. rder to understand the current music trends, one must know how Gen Z consumes their . Say ‘goodbye’ to CDs and downloading MP3s. Today, it’s all about streaming. Streaming ws teens to access music via internet connection on their phones and computers, and they n choose specific songs to create their own playlists. Social media also plays a part, as teens n collaborate on shared playlists or send tracks to friends. The Carp girls said their go-to programs are Apple Music, Spotify and SoundCloud.

Many teens never touch CDs. With the convenience of digital music and ability to curate playlists, these discs have become more of a hassle to buy, store and transport between car and home. Lilibeth Castillo brushed on the fact that digital playlists, like many things for the iGen, have replaced CDs because of their capacity for customization. She said, “I think it’s because people are more indecisive now, like you skip around in your own little playlists.” Ironically, record players have made a comeback as a top music device among hipster-types.

The quick access and command of music gives teens the ability to easily listen to songs from any decade or country. Because of this, genre preference today is more varied than ever. One individual’s taste may range from lo-fi hip-hop to Korean pop to “dad rock,” all popular genres among teens. According to media company Sweety High, 97 percent of Gen Z females listen to at least five different musical genres. This was also true with the Carp teens. The girls named rock, alternative, reggae, trap and EDM as just a few of their go-to genres.

The hottest artists of today are constantly changing for this generation. The girls named several artists on teens’ playlists across the country—Drake, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Khalid and Kendrick Lamar. These professionals fall within the rap, hip-hop and R&B genres, with those genres overlapping in any given song. The Carp girls said they listen to these singers on a regular basis.

However, Lilibeth made a point that she and many other teens also listen to artists not found on the Billboard 100. She said she discovers and listens to lesser-known bands, saying, “I find these other smaller groups when I go to music festivals. There’s a lot of performers that open before them that no one really knows about, and that’s how I find out about smaller groups. Or through friends.” One pervasive term in today’s music scene is “indie,” whether it’s indie rock, indie pop or even indie hip-hop. This term refers to independent artists or labels, but the indie genre is synonymous with alternative rock. The internet has given athome artists the ability to mix music and then share their hot tracks with the world through websites like SoundCloud.

Because of the internet’s capability to digitally preserve music, teens today are listening to tunes from “back in the day.” The girls said that some of their parents’ artists—such as Prince, Paula Abdul, The Rolling Stones and Keith Sweat—are still fresh. The stigma of listening to their “parent’s music” doesn’t exists for Gen Z teens, and instead they have nostalgia for listening to the songs they enjoyed with their parents as children.

The radio stations sending music through Carpinteria’s airwaves are always playing today’s top jams. The girls suggest checking out some of the local radio stations like 103.3 The Vibe, Old School 104.7, Live 105.5 and 101.7 K-Lite. However, Lilibeth said constant radio ads can be annoying and the overplaying of songs has ruined the listening experience for some of their favorite jams, one girl mentioned “Havana” by Camila Cabello specifically. Because of this, many Gen Z’ers take advantage of the auxiliary cord in their cars to play music off of their phones. This gives them control over their auditory experiences and avoids ads interrupting their groove.

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY “you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it,” wrote harper Lee in “to Kill a mockingbird.” are you curious as to what has been unspoken by the elders in your family? have you wondered what lies just below the surface, waiting for a simple question or slight prodding to reveal? one way to climb inside the skin of another is to ask questions and listen attentively. Several years ago i sat down with my grandmother to gain a better understanding of her life. She couldn’t believe i was “interested in a bunch of old stuff” and didn’t think she had anything interesting to say. But in our first talk, when i asked if she had an idea of where she’d like to start, she immediately launched into memories of her father that i had no idea about, and the emotion she showed while speaking made it clear that this was something she thought about often, though she had never spoken of it. “i don’t think my parents had a good relationship. evidently, my father was mean. he was very strict and didn’t like a lot of things we did. the main thing i remember about my father was he was an alcoholic and he made his own booze,

Coastal View News • Carpinteria, California so he was occupied with that instead of taking care of the farm. i remember going into that barn where he made the booze, and where he tested to see how strong it was. he let me lick the tester—i remember that so vividly. “as a father, i don’t remember him as a good father. but i do remember that day that he went across the pasture and pulled that gun and shot himself. i was only eleven years old, but i remember hearing the blast. i ran to the outside privy and went in there and just sat in there and cried and cried. a couple of his brothers went out there and found him. he was taken to his folks’ farm and people came there to see him. i remember they had a cook-stove that was against the wall, and there was a small space between it and the wall and i crawled behind there. that’s where i went so i wouldn’t have to go in there, but they came and got me. i have that picture of him in my head like it was yesterday. him lying there in the front room and people coming to see him. i don’t know where he shot himself—that part i don’t remember. When i went and touched him i just looked at his hand, not the rest of him. you wouldn’t believe how cold a dead person is. after that i was okay for some reason. it made me feel better that he was gone.” it also made my grandmother feel better to talk about that moment in time, to pull it out of the depths of her childhood and think about it from a wiser perspective. her father’s death added hardships to the lives of his wife and four young daughters, but they clung together and persevered, sprouting a seed of inner strength that flourished inside my grandmother for the rest of her life. that is only one of many things i learned about her, simply by ‘climbing into her skin’ for a short while. in my work as a personal historian,

At Carpinteria Lions Park on July 4, the club held its third annual family BBQ bash. Guests were treated to the standard Lions menu of tri-tip, chicken, beans, garlic bread, salad and sliced watermelon.

Over 475 meals were served up by the local pride. Live music by The FOG and line dancing by the Jugettes brought jubilation to the day’s festivities. This year’s party also featured games galore with cornhole and horseshoe tournaments and a bouncy house. The Palms and Marborg helped sponsor the Lion’s party, and proceeds from the event support the Carpinteria Lions Club community projects.

Junior Guards of the week announced

Week 1 Abigail Hubbs (9) always smiles and engages in every activity with a positive attitude, taking it seriously and trying her best. She respects her peers and elevates the good mood of those around her.

Owen Reeves (10) maintains great sportsmanship daily and has contagious excitement having fun while working out. You can see a look in his eyes when he’s running that says “I’m going all out and I want to do my best!”

Week 2 Stella Ruiz (11) has become an amazing athlete this summer and always gives her best effort without complaining. Our Carpinteria C Team relies on her performance to help us do well at our competitions.

Tiago Wiesenthal (11) recently returned to Carp JGs this summer giving excellent effort in all activities his first week and we’re so glad to have him back. He is funloving, silly, compassionate, witty, and being a tall strong surfer, he is one of our best C paddlers.

B Group

Week 1 Mackenzie “Mac” Bennet is a star athlete. She reaches maximum potential with each workout she is given and is a constant inspiration to those around her. During a particularly grueling workout she pushed herself so hard that the instructors had to stop her before she went hypothermic, much to her chagrin.

Elias Williams (12) has been a force since he stepped onto the beach. This is only his first year in the program but already he’s proved himself to be a natural junior lifeguard. He’s a great swimmer and paddler, and managed to make the top 10 of boys flags within the second week, which is outstanding for a new member to the program.

A Group

Week 1 Will Luders, 15, excels on the land. In the first week of Junior Lifeguards, Luders did over two miles of sprinting in the soft, beating his instructors and not taking a rest in order to help his team beat the push-up challenge.

Natalia Perez, 14, is an all-around great athlete. She is a strong swimmer and strong runner with a positive attitude. She encourages her teammates when the workouts are tough. Her attitude and effort makes her a great role model for the younger junior lifeguards.

Week 2 Across the board, Lexi Persoon, 15, is a great athlete. She is the best distance swimmer in the entire program and one of the fastest swimmers as well. She is a solid runner and a great distance paddler, beating her instructors in a team paddle relay. Lexi has a heart of gold and is an all-around good kid.

Beau Persoon, 15, is Lexi’s cousin. In week two he was ahead of everyone in the run-swim-runs including his instructors. Beau excels on the land and in the sea and gave a very solid effort during week two.

Canaan Failla (12) has enthusiasm for each JG workout and completes each task with his best effort. He never lets excuses get in his way. While trying out for the run relay team he gave 100 percent each round. Working with him is truly a joy.

Week 2 This week the junior lifeguard B group joined together as a team. They took on a difficult workout that united them. Caprisabel “Capri” Acquistopace maintained a positive attitude and her ability to persevere without complaining was admirable to those around her. She never questions a workout and is always hungry for more.

Henry Gonzales leaves a sports legacy at Carpinteria High School

in charge of the girls softball program was most satisfying,” said Gonzales. In his final two seasons on the diamond, the Warriors compiled 33 victories with wins in the first round of the CIF playoffs both years.

Born and raised in Carpinteria, Henry also had a highly celebrated sports career as a Warrior, lettering in football, basketball and baseball. His brothers Pancho, Bobby and Ray were also fine athletes at the school. A member of the Class of ’80, Henry quarterbacked the team all the way to a championship game his senior season. He was named Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table (SBART) Athlete of the Year that season as a result.

In 2005, he was inducted into the SBART Hall of Fame as an Outstanding Athlete. “Henry Gonzales is a ‘Hall of Famer,’” exclaimed Warriors Athletic Director Pat Cooney. “Of course, he is a proud member of the CHS Warriors Athletic Hall of Fame, but … the bottom line is that he has cared enough about people to help any student or Warrior family member with anything that they might have needed,” added Cooney. Of all the accolades Gonzales has received, his favorite moment as a Warrior athlete came during his junior year when the football team hosted rival Bishop Diego in a showdown of two top-ranked teams.

After being sidelined for about a month with an injury, Gonzales and the squad decided it was time for a uniform change. “The idea came from that (’77) college football season, Notre Dame came in with the green jerseys against USC,” explained Gonzales whose fellow team captain Charlie Thompson, and a handful of other team leaders, hatched a plan to surprise everyone by unveiling special gold jerseys for the game. Waiting until the opening moments prior to kickoff, the Warriors came out in the “throwback jerseys,” inspiring the team to a 30-7 win.

Gonzales plans to retire near Denver, Colorado to be close to his son Aaron and daughter-in-law Kasey Gentry (Class of ‘04), along with grandsons, Asher and Tate. Rest assured, Warrior Henry Gonzales will not be soon forgotten.

For over thirty years, Henry Gonzales played an integral role at Carpinteria High School. Last month, it was announced that Gonzales would be leaving his post as Assistant Athletic Director at the school, which he confirmed in an email last week.

“Carp High will replace the coaching vacancy left by Coach Gonzales, but what is irreplaceable will be the love, dedication, the hours and heart that this great man has devoted to his players and coaches,” said Cate School Head Baseball and Football Coach Ben Soto, who formerly coached Warrior JV football with Gonzales at the school.

But the athletic department will actually be tasked with filling three coaching vacancies, as the former City of Santa Barbara police officer headed both the softball and boys basketball programs and served as an assistant for the football team upon his retirement. “He (Gonzales) wore so many hats at Carpinteria High School, it will take three or four people to replace him in coaching, administration and relationships with the kids,” said Warriors Head Football Coach Rick Candaele, who has coached alongside Henry as a football assistant and girls basketball coach over the years.

As part of a local coaching fraternity, Gonzales’ and Candaele’s careers have also intertwined with their sons’ athletic careers. Candaele’s son Coley led the Warriors to three straight CIF titles in 1987, ’88 and ’89 under Head Coaches Lou Panizzon and Ben Hallock, with Gonzales as an assistant on both staffs. In turn, Coley was the last Warriors coach to win a CIF Football title in 2002, when his squad finished 14-0, quarterbacked

by Henry’s son, Aaron. Aaron went on to play at Claremont McKenna College, coached by the elder Candaele.

Henry was also the baseball coach for many years, until he and his brother Ray took over the softball program at the Foothill Road campus a decade ago. “A lot of wonderful things happened in the 10 years I was coach, just overall being

cHS offers free physical exams for Warrior football players

Carpinteria High School will be conducting free physical exams for all 2018 Warrior football players grades nine through 12 on Tuesday, July 17, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on campus at 4810 Foothill Road.

For the second consecutive year, Dr. William Gallivan has donated his time to ensure that the entire program is ready for the season.

“Physicals by Dr. Gallivan and staff again this year,” said Carpinteria football coach Rick Candaele.

“Many thanks,” he added.

carpinteria 10U All Stars do battle in ojai

The Carpinteria 10U All Stars baseball team participated in the District 63 Tournament in Ojai recently, competing against Foothill, Dos Pueblos and Goleta Valley.

The team made history by being the first Carpinteria Little League team to beat a Dos Pueblos Little League Team. Losing the first game against Ventura’s Foothill, Carpinteria went on to beat Dos Pueblos 8-7. Led by pitchers Micah Smith and Gabriel Martinez, the Carp All Stars battled and were victorious. Davin Nystrom and Rafael Jimenez hit solid doubles and Colten Gray, Nathan Holmstrom and Grant Ready assisted the team with base hits. David Aquistapace hit well the entire game and was closing pitcher for the team, getting the win with cheers and celebrating at the mound. The final game was a tough loss to Goleta Valley 2-6, but Carpinteria held their own against the bigger city teams.

It was following the Civil War that immigrants from all sections of the east began to pour into Southern California. During a few years of the late 60’s and early 70’s, a large portion of the valley was taken over by these immigrants.

In 1860, which was at the beginning of the Civil War, John Nidever and Thomas Callis and their families arrived from Texas. There was a lull in arrivals then until the close of that war after which there were a number who found their way here.

In 1868, Andrew Bailard and his family arrived and purchased four hundred acres, establishing a home in the eastern part of the valley. All of that land is now owned by his heirs. John Pyster and his family arrived the same year and purchased a tract of land adjoining.

In 1870 saw the arrival of four other families, Thomas Cravens’, John Walker’s, Henry Fish’s and John McAllister’s. Tracts of land were purchased and homes were established.

In 1871, the O. N. Cadwell and Henry Lewis families arrived and took up their abode here. The Franklin brothers, C. Bernard, Gideon E. and Mashack arrived in 1876, to be followed by the Shepard boys, Simeon, John Henry and James and Orlando, who had arrived a few years before and had lived in Montecito and Santa Barbara.

This was an American colony established which has grown into one of the richest sections of the state. The valley at that time was covered with a dense forest of live oaks which had to be grubbed out to make way for cultivation.

At the Lions Club gala dinner on June 30, new club officers were installed for 2018-19. over 100 people attended the “plated” dinner catered by Stanton’s Gourmet Catering. past president Curtis Lopez was the MC and past District Deputy Governor Fred Lemere swore in the new officers. The evening was light-hearted and everyone enjoyed themselves, said Neal Bartlett, the new club president.

Momentum continues for Families Belong Together movement

I am guilty of scouring the internet for the quote that comforts me or guides me.

Frankly, with the national tragedy of children and parents separated at the border and the local tragedy of more homes lost in the Holiday Fire, I’ve been on the hunt for some inspiration pretty often recently.

Who did I find this time? Our childhood television friend, Mr. Rogers.

Fred Rogers wrote, “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility.

It’s easy to say, ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.“ Our heroes are at the southern border and in New York and elsewhere trying to reconnect immigrant children and parents. Heroes are working in our county and around the world to improve the lives of children and families in need. And heroes live in your house and next door, too. Heroes teach children that all people are valuable and that the right thing is to honor the loving aspirations of our fellow humans. People who are willing to say that although it is easiest to have empathy for people we know and people like us, we must hold in our hearts that all people are a part of our human family.

Thank you, people who work for these values publicly, and thank you to those who are willing to stand up and say them in our neighborhood when others spout unthinking unkindness or hate.

Mr. Rogers inspires me to applaud everyday people who share responsibility for the young people around them.

He wrote: “Our world hangs like a magnificent jewel, in the vastness of space. Every one of us is a part of that jewel—a facet of that jewel. And in the perspective of infinity, our differences are infinitesimal.

We are intimately related. May we never even pretend that we are not. It’s not the honors and the prizes and the fancy outsides of life (that will) ultimately nourish

our souls. It’s the knowing that we can be trusted, that we never have to fear the truth, that the bedrock of our lives from which we make our choices is very good stuff.

“Deep down, we know that what matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What really matters is helping others win too, even if it means slowing down and changing our course now and then. Beside my chair is a French sentence from Saint-Exupery’s ‘Little Prince.’ It reads, ‘What is essential is invisible to the eye.’ What is essential to you? And who are those who have helped you become the person you are?

“Anyone who has been…able to sustain good work has had at least one person, and often many, who have believed in him or her. We just don’t get to be competent human beings without a lot of different investments from others.

I’d like to give you all an invisible gift, the gift of a silent minute to think about those who have helped you become who you are today.”

I’d like to elaborate on that invisible gift. Who helped you get to be your very best self? Who helps sustain you so you can invest in others? I hope you can give them a hug or a thank you, knowing even those no longer with us will receive your gratitude somehow. May their investment in you support you as you share responsibility for the young people and community around you.

Locals convened at the corner of Carpinteria and Linden avenues on June 30 to protest separating families at the border. Protestors waved American flags and homemade signs at passersby, exercising their rights to “patriotic free speech and peaceful assembly,” as one participant noted.

“Tiny, but mighty Carpinteria,” wrote the grassroots organization Indivisible Carpinteria on their Facebook page.

The Trump administration failed to meet the court-ordered deadline of July 10 to re-unite the families of 102 children under five-years-old separated from their parents at the U.S./Mexico border as part of the administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the policy on May 7. In the following two months, the government has revised the estimated number of children separated from their families from 2,000 to nearly 3,000, further complicating efforts to comply with the court’s order to reunite all families by July 26.

Burquezes go Barcelonian with CVN

Wally, Candi, Alec and Daniel Burquez, along with family friend, Sam Pantoja, recently spent a week in Barcelona, Spain. They visited Camp Nou, Barcelona’s soccer stadium, Park Guell, a 17th century military castle, and other museums and sites. The weather is exactly like Carpinteria’s and the group had an amazing trip.

A firey visit to the Big Island with CVN

Since visits to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park years ago, Mike and Diane Wondolowski have been watching the status of the ongoing Kilauea eruption and waiting. When new fissures opened up in May and started fountaining lava, they immediately made their travel plans and got to the Big Island ASAP. Once there, they took a pre-dawn boat ride to view and photograph the lava entering the ocean where they found themselves on a boat bouncing around in nearly-boiling ocean water. They also took a helicopter over the lava flows and over the 200-foot lava fountain. Notice the helicopter has no doors to provide the best viewing. That also allowed Mike and Diane to feel the heat rising from the lava river below them and to smell the sulfur. Fortunately, they held tight to their copy of the CVN so it didn’t fall to a fiery demise.
