Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District responded to a second-alarm residential fire on Monday, July 2, at approximately 9:30 p.m. at 4980 nipomo Dr. The fire was completely put out Monday night, and early into Tuesday morning fire fighters worked onsite removing the personal items of the homeowners, investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the damage.

At the Laguna Blanca Middle School closing ceremony in June, Anna Alldredge was honored with the 2018 Faculty Excellence Award, which recognizes recipients for their demonstrated excellence in teaching and commitment to Laguna Blanca and its students.

A respected leader in the Laguna community, Alldredge is always ready to lend a helping hand or share insightful advice, according to a release from the school. “On any given day, you will find the majority of the Middle School hanging out in her classroom during lunch chatting away with her,” notes Zack Moore a fellow teacher at Laguna.

“She listens to their needs, fears and ambitions, and then guides them to thoughtful choices.” This past school year, Alldredge was instrumental in organizing the first ever TEDx: Project Based Leadership class, resulting in the first annual TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool event that took place in January 2018.

Sheriff’s Office warns of extortion scam

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has recently seen an uptick in a common scam. The scam involves the victim receiving a letter or email indicating the sender has obtained personal and private information about the victim. The sender indicates the information they have obtained will both personally and publically damage the victim’s reputation. The suspect then attempts to extort money from the victim in order to keep the information confidential.

This type of extortion tends to target individuals who have high profile careers or have recently been mentioned in news or internet posts. The correspondence is well written, convincing and it provides details of how to transfer funds via bitcoin or pre-paid credit cards.

To report correspondence that meets this description, the Sheriff’s Office advises contacting law enforcement right away, to never give personal or financial information to anyone you are not completely sure is legitimate and to always contact the requesting agency directly to verify. To report scams, call the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-FTC-HELP or visitftc.gov/complaint/.

Lunch with two deputies

Last month I wrote a letter to the editor (“Too much police,” CVN, Vol. 24, No. 36) expressing my concern with how much of our city’s budget is taken by the Sheriff’s Department contract. It is currently at 38 percent of the budget and is partially responsible for a proposed 1.25 percent increase in our city’s sales tax. I also said that the Sheriff’s deputies patrolling our city seemed unfriendly and unapproachable. It appeared to me that these deputies just drive around in their vehicles, do what they do and then go home. They didn’t seem to want to become too involved with our community.

That was the impression I had until Jason Rodriguez arranged a luncheon with me and two Sheriff’s Department deputies.

Jason Rodriquez is the proprietor of a local restaurant, The Food Liaison.

Jason, as it turns out, has an extensive background in law enforcement and saw this as an opportunity for community members such as myself to actually meet

and talk to a sheriff’s deputy face to face over lunch.

I had a light lunch with Jason and Sheriff Deputies James and Kunigonis.

The officers that attended the lunch turned out to be two young women that have served our community for the past two years. They were both very gracious, informative and patient with an old guy like me. They answered all my questions and most importantly gave me a better insight into the police officers that safeguard our community. The main topics of our luncheon were the police budget and how to improve the relationship between our community and the Sheriff’s Department.

Although, I still feel the police budget is becoming very burdensome and a permanent solution should be found, I came away with a better understanding with regards to the men and women who serve and protect our community.

VIEWPOINT A personal immigrant story

My husband Saul emigrated from El Salvador with his family in 1962. They arrived on a Pan Am flight from San Salvador. Saul’s father was a university professor of agricultural engineering and his mother was an elementary teacher.

They left a comfortable home on the property of the Agricultural University where Saul’s father taught and hosted Peace Corps volunteers.

They left their affluent lifestyle because of the constant threat of violence. Just leaving the safety of their family home required the protection of bodyguards.

It was dangerous to be middle class in El Salvador where poverty was rampant and all the power was in the hands of 14 wealthy families and the government was brutal and corrupt.

After struggling for two years in Los Angeles, working at jobs ranging from perfume chemist to trash collector, fortunes changed for the better when Saul’s father became the ranch manager of a citrus ranch in Borrego Springs. It was during this time the entire family became naturalized citizens. It was a long process.

The family arrived in 1962 and became citizens in 1969.

Over the years, my in-laws sponsored every single member of their family. Initially it was the teenage cousins who were sent to protect them from the violence.

Older family members worked in civil service and needed to work long enough to retire. They sent every child away, a difficult thing to do, but they did it for their safety. People make very difficult decisions when the safety and welfare of their children is concerned.

I am writing this because of the kind of comments I read from people who just can’t put themselves in another’s shoes, writing things like, “My family came here legally!” Well, great! How fortunate they were to be able to do that—so did my

Personally, I doubt if any of my immigrant forebears came with papers.

The German side came over in the 1700s and the Swedes arrived in the late 19th century. They were all looking for a better life, fleeing poverty, failed crops and oppressive governments. The same reason people still migrate today. That is what people do, and always have done.

My recommendation to all people who would demonize those seeking asylum in this country is to take a deep breath, get to know someone who doesn’t look like you and listen to their story. Look at them as a fellow human being with all the same hopes and dreams that you have. Please do not listen to the rhetoric that refers to others as “animals, rapists, criminals and murderers.” Do not buy into the stereotyping. It is absolutely unconscionable that this kind of talk and behavior is coming from the very people who should be bringing us together instead of tearing us apart. My heart is breaking for my country right now.

HELP––six thousand times over Affordable transportation service turns 30

Thirty years ago, after suffering a stroke at the age of 33 that left the right side of her body paralyzed, Jean Harris struggled to maintain her independence despite her inability to drive. Depending entirely on her husband, friends and public transportation to take her where she needed to go, Harris realized the severe limitations that non-drivers dealt with in their daily lives.

Driven by her personal experience, Harris founded HELP of Carpinteria in 1988. The all-volunteer, non-profit organization would offer affordable transportation services for all Carpinteria residents.

Art defies gravity in new Porch exhibit “Fly”

BY DEBRA HERRICK Liz Brady’s series “Fly” explores the concept of escapism through floating chairs that hover above unseen landscapes or familiar Summerland, Carpinteria and Santa Barbara shores. “Fly” will be on view at Porch through Sept.

Brady takes aerial photos of beaches in Carpinteria and Summerland and incorporates them into her work. She creates an earthy and watery palette by painting with oils and graphite on wood

panels. Then she scratches and sands the surface to create a many-layered finish.

A fine art graduate from UCSB who has spent time learning her craft in Paris, France, Brady’s paintings evoke a surrealist pleasure in the impossible with a soft summery beachscape in tune with local arts and culture.

“I have lived on the coast of California my whole life and am constantly inspired by its beauty,” said Brady. “The colors of the sea and sky have influenced my work for 30 years and I never tire of painting them.”

Some viewers may long to escape the mundane and take a seat in one of the artist’s plush flying chairs, while others may feel vertigo at the sight of losing solid ground, and that’s part of “Fly’s” charm.

“I am an escapist and love the thought of floating away for a bit here and there. I like leaving them open to the interpretation of the viewer because everyone sees and feels something different when looking at them,” said Brady.

“I think Marc Chagall, I have always loved his work and the floating quality in so many of his images has been a big influence on me.”

Growing a global heart CVN

MISSION POSSIBLE BARBARA DUNLAP Winfred Van Wingerden is well known in Carpinteria for his local volunteer activities. He’s done everything from helping Girls Inc. blossom to ensuring that students from low-income families have access to computers.

But as much as Van Wingerden enjoys supporting this town, he feels it’s vital to volunteer on a broader scale as well. “It’s so important that people don’t just look at a community, but that they expand their vision beyond their community and country,” he says. “We’re just one world.

We’ve got to work together to make the planet the best we can.”

To that end, Van Wingerden has long volunteered with Concern America, an organization that works with economically deprived communities around the world to develop long-term solutions 1025 CASITAS PASS RD to poverty. About a year ago, he also joined Carpinteria Sunset Rotary Club, in large part because the Rotary Foundation supports national and international programs to help those in need.

Here’s a closer look at Van Wingerden’s volunteer activities at home and farther afield.

You’ve worked with Concern America for decades. What roles have you played, and why is the organization important to you?

I love the group’s philosophy: Grow a global heart. I think we should all be doing that.

In 1981, I began doing horticultural fieldwork with Concern America in Tijuana. Today, CA has grown to serve Mexico, Guatemala, Columbia and parts of Africa.

CA’s main focus is promoting self-sustainability in the communities it’s invited into. Through education and training, clean water systems, self-composting toilets, work cooperatives and fuel-efficient stoves are built.

Another important program is CA’s Health Care Promoter. To date, 6,000 people have graduated from a two-year program in health care and have returned to their communities to provide basic medical care.

I’m currently on the board of Concern America, helping raise money through auctions and events. My retirement plans include starting an auxiliary chapter in Carpinteria, so keep an eye out for ways to get involved.

The sustainability campaign raised enough so Computers for Families doesn’t have to fundraise every year. The program can continue into perpetuity.

You’ve actively participated in Girls Inc. for many years. What have been some of your activities?

I got involved in 1983 when it was still called Girls Club, and it was still on Maple Street. When I joined the board, we were outgrowing that facility very quickly. Around 1990, I found a piece of property where Girls Inc. is located now.

We bought that property with the city, started a capital campaign and raised the money to build the new facility.

I later left the board but have continued to stay in touch. I’ve been the auctioneer for live auctions, and we still go to events and support Girls Inc. financially.

It’s a fine organization in terms of its offerings, including teen programs and mother-daughter programs. A lot of girls have gotten a leg up in going to college and earning degrees. Many of them come back and tell their stories.

Please describe the Rotary Foundation and its work.

Rotary has many chapters—even in Carpinteria—and the foundation is part of each chapter. The foundation does local and global work. For example, it does water projects in Mexico, Central America and Brazil. Eradicating polio has been its biggest effort recently.

dedicated to promoting world peace. It provides programs in schools to discuss how we can create peace. It emphasizes being open and willing to talk to people who have a completely opposite viewpoint from yours.

Like all language, teen slang is constantly evolving with new rules and expressions. Without a basic understanding of new terminology, conversations among members of Gen Z become undecipherable.

This is thanks to social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit giving teens a chance to interact with social groups across the country, creating a melting pot of language.

One might recall phrases like “lol” and “omg,” and the iGen has continued to curtail phrases for quick messaging. Carpinteria teen Daniel Grimes gave several examples of new acronyms: “‘Thanks’ like ‘THX,’ ‘what are you doing?’ is ‘WYD,’ ‘WYA’—‘where you at?’” Fellow Warrior Ever Santamaria also said “GM” and “GN” are common abbreviations for good morning and good night.

Like most trends, there are some phrases you’ll only hear from young adults walking the streets of Carp. One group of Warriors football players including Grimes, Santamaria, Tristan Kelly, Jonathan Mora and Alexis Perez gave insight into this beach town’s teen lingo. They said “shoal,” meaning gross or nasty, is unique to Carpinteria High School, and students have said it for perhaps over 10 years. Some words of even older origin are surfer lingo from the 1970s. Kelly said Carpinterians still say “shred the gnar,” “bruh” and “dude.” “Cruise,” according to Grimes, means to “come over,” and the website Urban Dictionary also noted that many Southern Californians use it as a way to say hang out or attend a gathering.

There are some phrases permeating all Gen Z conversations, such as the ubiquitous word “lit.” Whether it’s the party of the year or a hot dance move, this phrase describes an array of subjects with varying degrees of “lit-ness.” Something “lit” is exciting or excellent. According to Merriam-Webster, this originally described a state of drunkenness, and its connotations of alcohol consumption can relate to describing some lit events. However, something as innocuous as receiving a paycheck can be lit.

Another recurrent expression, “tea,” might be a favored hot drink among many, but for many Gen Z’ers, this word evokes scandal and revealing redhot details. “Tea” is synonymous with drama, and tea can be weak, hot, etc. It originates in black drag culture, largely in the South where gossip over afternoon tea parties were once common, according to Merriam-Webster. To “spill the tea” means to reveal details about gossip. It’s interchangeable with “spill the beans,” said Grimes. Another tea-related phrase is to “sip tea,” meaning to not become involved in other people’s drama.

Last but not least, the words “low key” and “high key” have taken the throne from “literally” as the most common adverbs among teens. These words describe varying degrees of secrecy. To act low key means to do something secretly or “on the DL (down-low),” whereas something high key is done openly. Kelly gave the example, “‘There’s a party, but keep it low key, though.’” Relationships, gossip and even emotions can be low key. They also mean not much and very much, respectively. Like many iGen phrases, these words originate from the rap community. According to Business Insider, rapper Drake used the two words on Nicki Minaj’s song “Only,” bringing its usage to popularity largely over Twitter.

However, text talk is not the end of modern language. Most teens prefer speaking normally in real life than how they message friends. The Warriors experts on Gen Z slang all emphasized the importance of faceto-face communication and the level of understanding needed for interpersonal communication. Student Ernesto Martinez said, “Text is like slang, but in real life, you have to interact, be formal about it.” Grimes agreed, saying, “You use, like, hand gestures when you talk, and, like, it won’t be the same really as when you’re texting. It’s not the same tone too.”

Carpinteria High School Class of ’80 alum Henry Gonzales recently announced his retirement. Gonzales served as Assistant Athletic Director at the school, but was also head coach for both the boys basketball and girls softball programs. Lettering in football, basketball and baseball Gonzales’ exploits earned him a seat at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. His son Aaron led the Warriors to their last CIF football championship at La Playa Stadium in 2002.

CHS tennis teams to host weekly mixers

The Carpinteria High School boys and girls tennis teams began hosting weekly “Twilight Tennis Mixers” on Wednesday, June 13, at the CHS tennis courts and will continue hosting doubles play each Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. through Aug. 22. A suggested $5 donation will support the boys and girls teams, and players of all skill levels are invited. For more information or to RSVP, email carpbryant@verizon. net/. WASTEWATER COLLECTION SYSTEM OPERATOR 1 Salary Range: $50,604 to $61,524 (annual) The Carpinteria Sanitary District is seeking a motivated and resourceful individual to fill the position of Wastewater Collection System Operator 1. The Operator 1 position is an entry-level position.

Responsibilities include operation and maintenance of various sewer cleaning and CCTV inspection equipment and performing associated collection system duties, which include infrastructure repair, utility location, sewer lateral maintenance and low pressure pump inspection and repair. Additional job duties include general housekeeping, vehicle and equipment maintenance and other assigned tasks. Availability for “on-call” duties for sewer blockage remediation, repairs and other activities is mandatory.

Aided by an able office manager plus three other detectives, all of whom are excellent, tactful sleuths who keep local police and clients calm enough to keep Agatha from being thrown off their cases.

Spike-heeled, tenacious Agatha places herself and her staff in danger while learning everything about the victims, suspects and bystanders who often know more than the police give credence to.

We cringe and laugh as she annoys everyone involved. When her outrageous exploits solve yet another mystery, her friends and we readers applaud.

This particular Agatha adventure is my favorite. On a whim she moves to Norfolk, only to be confounded by rumored mischievous fairies and murder.

“The House of Broken Angels”

Miguel Angel de la Cruz, Big Angel, narrates his life story to himself to resolve his past. The week after the death of his mother, Big Angel is determined to bring his extended family together to celebrate his last birthday in the wake of a cancer diagnosis. He is haunted by childhood memories of hunger and abandonment in La Paz, Mexico, along with the ghosts of two sons—one dead, one vanished—and with his gringo half-brother Little Angel.

As the celebration takes place in Southern California, family feuds and scandals are temporarily held just below the surface.

The novel starts slowly, introducing the complex and multicultural family, but the birthday party delivers suspense and surprises. “The House of Broken Angels” is a moving portrayal of how families fall apart and come together during difficult times.

Subtitled “The Power of Thinking without Thinking,” the book explores how people can make rapid decisions without pausing to analyze the reasons. Writing in a lively style, Gladwell gives the reader specific examples of people, some of them famous, reacting quickly in difficult situations. Referring to neuroscience and psychology, Gladwell challenges us to think differently about how our minds work.

Say “hey” to Jaxxson, a three-year old soft-coated Wheaten Terrier. He loves to run in the white water on the beach, shred seaweed, chase birds and give “high fives.” Jaxxson’s human companion, Chris, adopted him 2.5 years ago. “Someone bought him at a pet store, kept him for 13 days and then dumped him at a pound in Riverside.

“I think it was the best thing that could have happened to him. He now spends his days playing on the beach with his 12-year-old brother Finley,” said Chris.
