Carpinteria Valley Little League’s Junior Padres finished a dominating season with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Saticoy White Sox to claim the District 63 North Championship. This is the first time a junior division team from CVLL has ever won the district championship.

“Carpinteria has had really good junior teams in the past,” said Tim Gray, one of the team’s coaches and father of the Padres’ catcher, Colten Gray.

“But to have this team accomplish what they did – honestly, I don’t think anyone thought much about this team until word got around about the quality of baseball these guys were playing. The community rallied around this team and started to come to the home games to see them play.”

Making this season’s success even more special is the fact that CVLL – which was founded in 1997 – celebrated its 25th Anniversary this year.

A fire broke out near the Highway 192 late Friday afternoon, but firefighters had it under wraps.

Vegetation fire breaks out near Hwy 192

Firefighters responded to a small vegetation fire near Highway 192 behind Carpinteria late Friday afternoon.

The initial alert came in around 4 p.m., according to the PulsePoint county alert system, but the incident was closed by 4:59 p.m., wrapping up in just under an hour.

St. Joseph Church’s annual festival begins July 8

The St. Joseph Church’s annual festival, a Carpinteria favorite, hits town July 8, with favorite foods, rides and drinks open on that Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The festival will run July 8, 5 p.m. – 11 p.m.; July 9, noon – 11 pm.; and July 10, noon – 9 p.m. Parking and admission are free.

The festival will have its usual food staples, including BBQ tri-tip, hot dogs, tacos, cotton candy, strawberry short cake, Horchata and more. A beer garden offers a festival treat for those 21+, and the festival’s raffle drawing will be held Sunday at 8 p.m., for a chance to win $3,000 and other cash prizes. Entertainment is offered in both English and Spanish.

“The festival is the main fundraiser for St. Joseph Church; it provides funds for the many ministries which meet the spiritual needs of the St. Joseph community throughout the year,” the church said in a release.

There are 805 active Covid-19 cases in Santa Barbara County, according to Covid-19 numbers release Tuesday. This is up from the two-week case average of 788.

The case rate dper 100,000 people stands at 23.79, down from 28.52 last week. The test positivity rate is 12%.

There are no new reported Covid-19 deaths within the county, and 39 people are currently hospitalized due to Covid-19. So far, the county has reported 93,650 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

These numbers do not include at-home, rapid Covid-19 test results.

City seeks members for Library Advisory Commission

The city of Carpinteria has opened a recruitment for five members of the new Library Advisory Commission for two-year terms. Commissioners will review programs and services and make recommendations, acting as conduits between the community, library board of trustees and city librarian to provide advice and feedback. The commission will meet monthly and in accordance with the Brown Act. Compensation for Commissioners is $30 per monthly meeting. In a statement, the city said it seeks commission members that are “representative of the library service area population demographics; library user groups, including underrepresented user groups; and person(s) knowledgeable in library management and operations.”

Applications will be accepted until Friday, July 15. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend the special meeting of the library board of trustees on Monday, July 25.

New arts center summer camp music director announced

Sarah Slezak is the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center’s new Sea Summer Camp 2022 music director, the center announced this week.

Slezak has 10 years of music education under her belt. According to the arts center, she is looking forward to “working with the campers to put together a fun show for the parents and community that showcases drumming, mallet percussion, singing, and folk dancing.”

Local cameo in upcoming reality show

Local Roberta Lehtinen will get a taste of stardom in an upcoming episode of the “Miz and Mrs” reality television show, where WWE champions Mike and Maryse Mizanin take on parenthood. In season 3, episode 5, Lehtinen plays the woman at the computer in the business center, she said.

“It was a fun experience and totally ad libbed with two minutes of prep time – done in one take,” she said. The episode will air on June 27 on the USA network at 11 p.m.

Former CHS valedictorian graduates UCLA law school

Former Carpinteria High School ’08 valedictorian Lucy Musson has graduated from University of California Los Angeles law school, her grandparents told CVN. Musson received high honors and graduated in the top 10% of her class. She earned her undergraduate degree from Stanford University.

Her mother, Lucy Carleton of Carpinteria, is an English teacher and girls varsity soccer coach, and her father, Mike Musson, lives in Santa Ynez. Her grandparents, Sharron and Will Carleton, live in Carpinteria.

SBWCN releases 15 brown pelicans rescued during May crisis

Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network (SBWCN) has released two groups of brown pelicans that were rescued during the May pelican crisis, the organization announced.

After more than three weeks of receiving treatment, 15 pelican patients made a full recovery and were healthy enough to rejoin the wild population. These birds were some of the hundreds rescued along the California coast, including in Carpinteria, after being found emaciated, hypothermic and dehydrated.

The first five pelicans were released on Friday, June 10 at Butterfly Beach in Montecito. The second group of five was released on Saturday, June 11 at Goleta Beach; and the most recent group of five pelicans was released on June 21 at the Carpinteria Salt Marsh.

In the last month, more than 270 brown pelicans have been rescued and delivered to SBWCN’s Wildlife Hospital. Most of these pelicans were found to be emaciated, dehydrated and hypothermic, and a few arrived with additional injuries.

Many more wildlife rehabilitation centers along the California coast have been experiencing the same influx of brown pelicans.

The SBWCN team has been treating these birds by providing fluids, food, medication, warmth and supportive care. The team has also been working with other nearby wildlife centers to transport some of these birds and assist in their rehabilitation. To qualify for release, the animal care team looks for a few important benchmarks, including the pelican’s body condition, feather quality and mentation.

“Seeing these pelicans get a second chance out in the wild makes all the hard work worthwhile,” said Ariana Katovich, SBWCN’s executive director. “Our team has dedicated incredible time and effort over the last month, and we couldn’t have done it without the support of our community. We’re hopeful that many more of these pelicans will join this group and make a full recovery.”

While the number of new pelican rescues has slowed down recently, SBWCN still has about 60 pelicans in care at its Goleta facility. Many of these birds are responding well to treatment and are residing in the outdoor pools and aviaries.

There are still a handful of pelicans that need more intensive care inside of the Wildlife Hospital.

Currently, the exact cause of this widespread event is still unconfirmed. While there is no evidence of disease or unusual parasites, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is continuing to investigate the cause.

About brown pelicans

• Brown pelicans are large seabirds that range anywhere from 8–10 pounds with a wingspan between 6.5–7.5 feet.

They are common residents of the southern coasts of the United States, with ranges extending down to South America.

• Brown pelicans are known for plunge-diving into the ocean to catch their food – one of only two pelican species to do so. These social birds can be found congregating in large flocks almost year-round.

• Populations of brown pelicans reached dangerously low numbers in the 1960s due to pollution from the pesticide DDT, and the species was listed as endangered by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1972. Due to DDT regulations and conservation recovery efforts, the brown pelican has since been removed from the endangered species list.

A pelican takes its first steps onto the beach after it was rescued and cared for by SBWCN. Hundreds of pelicans fell ill to an unknown illness last month and nearly 300 were rescued by SBWCN.

Carpinteria celebrates opening of new carpool lanes

Senator Monique Limón, Congressman Salud Carbajal and Supervisor Das Williams cut the red tape on the new Highway 101 carpool lanes last week, a ceremonial end to the major construction on the Carpinteria segment of the Highway 101 project.

Carpinteria Mayor Wade Nomura also spoke during the ceremony, thanking the workers and project managers for their work over the past few years.

“For decades, we as Carpinterians have been dealing with traffic similar to that of a major city,” Nomura said, noting that with delays and accidents, it could take up to an hour to get to Santa Barbara just up the way. “(These new lanes) change something that we are going to definitely be looking forward to.”

He also touched on other aspects of the project, including new intersections, new lighting systems and bridge changes. Workers constructed new bridges at Franklin and Santa Monica creeks, and rebuilt several on- and off-ramps in the area.

Senator Limón said in a release she is proud to see the section of the construction project completed.

“The improvements for transit riders and the local connections encourage a transportation system that functions for everyone,” Limón said. “We are a community that works regionally between Ventura and Santa Barbara/Goleta, and our policies and planning reflect the needs of our working families on the Central Coast.”

Work continues on the Summerland and Padaro portions of the project.

School Board hit with extra $248k for Canalino modernization

Superintendent awarded 3% raise

The Carpinteria Unified School District awarded Superintendent Diana Rigby a 3% raise at its last meeting during a closed session, according to board trustee Andy Sheaffer.

Sheaffer said Rigby was awarded

“proficient” status during her evaluation.

The board also discussed a conference with labor negotiators during closed session; no reportable action was taken.

The board voted 4-0 to reject a possible litigation claim, on a separate matter.

Trustees order special meeting for vacant seat

The Carpinteria Unified School District board will hold a July 26 special meeting to fill former trustee Jayme Bray’s open seat. Bray resigned on June 14, citing a family move out of Carpinteria.

Because she resigned six months before her term was scheduled to end in December 2022, the board must either order an election or make a temporary appointment. Board trustees Andy Sheaffer and Jaime Diamond will screen possible applicants to fill Bray’s vacant seat, the board voted last week; that chosen applicant will remain in Bray’s seat until December 2022.

Applicants will be interviewed during the special meeting on July 26, Superintendent Rigby said.

The Carpinteria Unified School District board of trustees was hit with yet another heavy increase in Measure U projects due to mismanagement, this time at the Canalino Elementary School – an increase of $248,665, bringing the total contract up to $5,078,136.

Of that, $101,011 will be paid using Measure U contingency allocations, while $147,654 will come from other fund allocations, according to school staff.

“There are two things that drove this price: one was that there was asbestos found in the kitchen,” assistant superintendent Maureen Fitzgerald told the board. “The second was, the exterior painting and wood repair… was not included in the original scope. But we have rotted eaves, rotted window casing, door casing.”

Fitzgerald said she found out in speaking to previous Measure U staff that fixing the rotted wood and painting was planned for funding under deferred maintenance. But, she emphasized, it should have been part of the modernization project from the beginning – deferred maintenance does not have enough funding to fix the rotting and painting.

While the board ultimately approved the contract order, they remained frustrated with the repeated contract increases.

“That’s not an acceptable answer,” trustee Jaime Diamond said, in response to Fitzgerald’s explanations.

“I don’t understand how that couldn’t have been included (originally),” trustee Sheaffer said, to the agreement of fellow board members. “…We think we’re getting a completed project, and it’s obvious things are included in that, and then we get hit with these change orders. It makes everybody look bad. That people are not doing their job to pay attention to what’s going on.”

Because the funds were not originally included, there is not currently paint on the modernization project, according to Fitzgerald.

“I agree that I don’t understand why some of these weren’t considered in the projects, the answer I continuously got was, it’s not part of Measure U, or there was no money. Not the right answers,” Fitzgerald said.

Rigby said the decision was made in 2016 or 2017, but did not place blame or cite a specific team who made that decision not to include the funds.

The board accepted several donations last week. The California Community Foundation donated $1,000 for the ¡Vamos a leer! program at Canalino Elementary School; the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning donated $1,000 to Carpinteria High School’s Future Farmers of America program; and Jack’s Bistro donated $225 in breakfast items for the Carpinteria High School class of 2022 grad night breakfast.

There will be no second board meeting in June 2022. The next regular board meeting is scheduled for July 12.

Obituary

Theodore Theilmann 5/28/1946 – 5/13/2022

Theodore Neil Theilmann, 75, of Fridley, Minnesota, Huntington Beach and South Lake Tahoe, California – but mostly Carpinteria, California – died of a sudden heart attack on Friday, May 13, in Oslo, Norway, where he was traveling with his wife.

He was a role model, progressive thinker, citizen of the world and a truly amazing husband, father, and grandfather. He was interested in everything and could fix anything.

He was also a complex human: an eagle scout, a Marine in the Vietnam war, a sailor, and a pot smoking hippie; a Minnesotan farmer, a gruff mountain man, and a Southern Californian beachcomber; a college dropout a building contractor, a car mechanic, and a self-taught engineer; a stubborn curmudgeon that was also a complete pleasure to be around; an avid traveler and a Sudoku-loving, card playing homebody; an expert in the history of religion but an avid despiser of its use as a way of life; a craftsman, a woodsman, a waterman, and a deep thinker; an endless well of knowledge and experience with the softest heart when you worked through his tough facade.

He was a son, a husband, a father, a grandfather, an uncle and a surrogate father to many. He will be missed immensely. He is predeceased by parents Theodore and Audrey Theilmann, sister Judy Bradley, and brother-in-law Bill Bradley. He is survived by his wife Mary Anne Theilmann, children Theodore Damien Murty and Jessica Wreyford, childrenin-law Lori Murty and Chase Wreyford, grandchildren Laurel Murty, Isabel Murty,

Fight housing needs requirements

Thank you, Christie Boyd, for your excellent letter in CVN (Vol. 28, No. 38, “Save Bailard Farm”) helping us understand the absurdity of having to reduce our own water usage so we can build more housing units like the “Bailard Avenue” project, with its 169 units and the 99+ unit “Farm Hotel” at the Bluffs.

They are among many new pointless projects currently under consideration.

But we have a new player in town. The Housing Element and Regional Housing Needs Allocation, or RHNA. If you are not familiar with RHNA, you better find out fast because this agency is going to play havoc with our General Plan.

Although it has been around since 1969, it is beginning to show its presence. Its purpose is to calculate the housing needs in each region. It has determined that our city needs to accommodate 901 new housing units.

To be fair, it must include housing for all economic segments and people with special needs. It also allows us to count Accessory Dwelling Units and permits mixed-use zoning. The one thing I did not see in all its edicts was the many non-conforming additions people have built on their property over the years without a permit. This would be a perfect time to give amnesty to those ADUs already built and count them towards our RHNA mandate. Are you listening, city hall?

But what bothers me the most is that inflation is raging, we are in a 1,200-year drought and the pundits say we are headed for a severe recession. This is a terrible burden to be put on any community at this time. Wouldn’t it be wise for the state to put all this stuff on hold until things become more manageable? Shouldn’t all the cities affected by RHNA band together along with their state representatives and do something?

I want to show my appreciation and gratitude to Vickie Gonzalez for her article (CVN Vol. 28, No. 38, “The four ‘M’s of mental health”). I feel it is important for our community to learn about mental health to reduce the stigma and shame that often contributes to one not seeking needed help.

To have open dialogue with teachers, family, and friends, where one feels safe discussing their emotions and feelings, is paramount during this time. Having a regular article like Vickie’s would really help all community members far and wide not feel so alone, and perhaps prompt them to feel safe discussing personal issues with someone they trust.

Vickie’s article spoke to my soul and personal experiences in overcoming drinking to self-medicate my depression

and social anxiety that had been with me since I began college. If I had read an article such as the one she wrote, I believe I would have had the courage to get professional help, or ask questions about my fears, despite the stigma that was very prevalent back at the turn of the century when my mental health struggles manifested.

To feel safe and not alone in the world, despite whatever feelings and emotions arise in life, allows one to seek safety by being vulnerable with others. It eventually did for me, and I hope others will identify with what was said, and have the courage to let others into their headspace instead of feeling shamed or flawed.

Wearing a mask throughout life, when within you would like to be free to be yourself, is a difficult challenge to overcome. With community awareness and unconditional support, less will have to travel that route, and be more open to come as they are.

Inflation? Look in the mirror

As a result of gas prices and in the name of conservation, my wife and I group our chores around town together to do our part to reduce carbon emissions, reduce fossil fuel use and save money during a time of steep inflation. I sit in the Albertson’s parking lot listening to an NPR piece on inflation brought on mostly by gas shortage due to the Russian madman and limited supply chain due to China’s authoritarian shutdown.

Closer to home, I am struck by a gas guzzling SUV adjacent to me. Its driver, presumably hard at work, has been sitting there for 10 minutes with his engine running. I can’t help but wonder if this guy complains about high gas prices. Does he represent the millions of Americans who complain about the Chinese while spend his hard-earned paycheck on disposable items made in China to satiate the voracious American hunger for cheap “junk” made elsewhere, sometimes by enslaved children? Does this wasteful guy blame Biden? Does he remember our former leader who for months poo-pooed a global pandemic, who emboldened a dictator to start the war that now affects world oil and food supplies, or who incited an insurrection based on lies and personal enrichment while “serving the people”?

If this guy weren’t so occupied shoving unhealthy fast food in his pie hole, he might see his “better self” in the rearview mirror, staring back and wondering if personal responsibility will ever occur.

No doubt it will.

The question is, will it be too late? After his expensive doctors tell him his days are numbered, his medical insurance runs out and his family is forced to sell their home and declare personal bankruptcy?

Moms Demand Action group launches in Carpinteria

“Your kids, their kids, my kids deserve better,” Aja Forner told CVN. Motivated by the tragic elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Forner, along with Amy Harrison and Carly Bass, started a Moms Demand Action chapter in Carpinteria. The nationwide grassroots movement, Moms Demand Action, helps community members organize together to fight for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence.

“The day after Uvalde, I was scared to send my kids to school. School is meant to be a safe place, you drop your kids off and trust they will be there for you to pick up unharmed and someone took that safety away for many,” Forner said.

“Sandy Hook and Uvalde showed us these acts of gun violence are not limited to large cities. It can happen in small towns, towns just like ours and I feel very strongly that if I don’t help to create change with common sense gun laws, I have failed my kids.”

The local chapter, which spun off of the Santa Barbara chapter to make the movement more accessible to Carpinterians, already has nearly 100 people on its listserv and had nearly 40 people in attendance at its first meeting on June 13.

“We’re all feeling like we have this great momentum and community, and we want to take steps forward,” Harrison said, emphasizing that the group is nonpartisan and bipartisan. Harrison said community members are looking for ways to be involved and fight for changes that will help protect children, and Moms Demand Action will help channel this determination.

The group has already succeeded in getting a secure storage resolution included in the Carpinteria Unified School District’s yearly enrollment packet, which is sent home with all students and families.

The resolution will educate parents and guardians on their responsibility under California law to responsibly store any firearms and ammo into separate locked containers. Parents or guardians will need to sign and return the letter acknowledging that they have read and understood the information.

The quick implementation of the resolution – a major achievement for a newly founded Moms Demand Action chapter – came about quickly with the assistance of CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby, who attended the first meeting and immediately agreed to add the resolution to the district’s enrollment packet.

The newly formed Carpinteria Chapter of Moms Demand Action kicked off its campaign for common sense gun laws with a well-attended launch meeting on June 13. said. “Not many people know about the secure storage resolution, which is state law and is punishable by jailtime. It’s good reminder to let people know that this is the law and please lock it away so it doesn’t end up in the hands of someone who shouldn’t have it.”

The next initiative for the group is a letter writing campaign to elected officials. Bass said that the group is looking for ways to keep the community safe and signaling to elected officials that the community supports safe gun laws and protections is important.

“We in California are fortunate that we are ahead of other states in terms of safety, but we still need to write our elected officials to thank them, to tell them, ‘we see you,’ and to work with other states to ban assault rifles,” Bass said.

Bass also added that Moms Demand Action is not against all guns, “we just want common sense gun laws to protect our children.”

The next Moms Demand Action meeting will be held on June 29, at 6 p.m. at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, and then every two weeks throughout the summer.

During the school year, the group plans to meet once a month.

At the next meeting, in addition to the letter writing campaign, volunteer opportunities will be discussed and assigned for needed organizational positions like event planning and scheduling.

Boy scouts honored for staircase reconstruction

Members of Carpinteria Boy Scouts Troop 50 – Ian Thomas and Evan Gregg – were honored earlier this week for their work in reconstructing the Jelly Bowl beach staircase.

Mayor Wade Nomura congratulated the two, alongside representatives from the offices of Assembly Member Steve Bennet and Senator Monique Limón. Nomura praised the pair’s volunteer efforts, as well as the work of fellow troop members who helped in the process. Local businesses and organizations also donated to Thomas and Gregg’s cause.

4-H Club wins big at Silverthread Classic

The Playa Del Sur 4-H steer team took home some big wins last week at the Silverthread Classic in Ojai.

Alejandra Cruz took the Junior Showmanship Champion buckle alongside her steer, Duke, while Caleb Rosborough took home the Novice Showmanship Champion buckle with his steer, Cash. Cruz placed second in her market class, while Rosborough took third in his.

The 4-H team’s next showcase will be in mid-July in Santa Maria, at the Santa Barbara County Fair.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria held a Summer Safety Family Night last Thursday, to the tune of getting kids prepared for a healthy summer. Families gathered at the club for food, games and prizes, including summer safety essentials such as sunscreen, goggles, hats, chapstick, sunglasses, water bottles and helmets.

“The family safety night was a goal of mine, that stemmed from my background in aquatics, and a passion for all things safety,” Jessie Shauer, the club’s Eureka! and teen coordinator said. “My overall goal was to supply families with the accurate information, as well as supplies to keep themselves and their families safe through the summer and the fun activities they participate in.”

Carpinteria students from segregated era honored

Last week, dozens of people came out to celebrate the historic reunion of five Aliso Elementary School students from the school’s “Mexican-only” era. Salvador Campos, Tomás Castelo, Lorenzo Martinez, Benito Villegas and Josephine Villegas were recognized at a ceremony at Aliso, with a commendation from Carpinteria City Council member Natalia Alarcon. The event was organized by Latinx Arts Project/Carpinteria (Proyecto de Artes Latinx/Carpinteria) in an effort to build community support for a mural documenting the segregation period in Carpinteria schools.

“I thanked Las Maria Elena’s Club (the women in the ‘40s who fought for integration) and the current PTA for continuing to represent the students and families of Aliso Elementary School,” event organizer Suzanne Requejo said. “I also read an excerpt from Aliso School, ‘For the Mexican Children,’ regarding the last segregated Aliso School class who graduated from the eighth grade on June 13, 1947.”

In addition to honoring former students, Latinx Arts Project co-founders Requejo and Leslie Westbrook unveiled the grassroots organization’s new logo designed by Larry Vignon and Cynthia Von Stein.

The film, “Voces Old Town Carpinteria,” by filmmaker Brent Winebrenner, was also screened.

Funds raised at the event will help launch the first mural of the Latinx Arts Project’s multi-mural community arts project. Voces de Old Town Carpinteria will be screened again at The Alcazar Theatre on Saturday, July 30.

“The parents for Aliso and the new principal are very much behind our project and we are hoping that our first mural might find a home at Aliso School,” Westbrook said.

Wayne’s wild ride (and my last one) CVN

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH Wayne Babcock has one of the preeminent surfboard collections anywhere.

The longtime Carpinterian and owner of Angels Antiques on Carpinteria Avenue – next door to the former offices of the Coastal View News (now Zelda’s house of delights) and across the street from Beach Motors – began collecting surfboards in the 1970s.

“It’s an addiction,” he admits, “but there are worse addictions one could have!”

Housed at a ranch outside town off Highway 150, Wayne’s collection spans the history of surfing with Hawaiian boards from the 1800s that would be representative of the pre-contact surf craft of Hawaiian wave riders going back centuries, to the boards Al Merrick shaped up in Santa Barbara in the early 80s. He blends Mark Richards’ findings with his own intuitive craftsmanship in the early days of contemporary high-performance design.

The assembled boards are extraordinary, and rather than attempting to catalogue them here it might be more informative to give general impressions and a sense of the conversation Wayne and I had over a couple of hours among these vestiges of the sport of kings.

First off, Wayne is a surfer. A Santa Monica boy raised in the rough and tumble of the Pacific Ocean Pier scene, populated by the like of Jay Adams and Jeff Ho of Zephyr Surfboards who incorporated vato-inspired tags on his surfboard designs, in a manner of saying “Homie don’t play,” that pervaded through and through to Oxnard and Ventura. This was a time when wave riding was another world and a prison stint away from “Surfin’ in the USA.” So, a number of those boards are represented. Respect. And up the road a piece from the gritty shores of Los Angeles proper, our beloved Rincon’s sister break of Malibu (we see you, Andy Lyons!) is represented in balsa wood Malibu Chip designs by the venerable Joe Quigg. Bob Simmons too, with his early sandwich plywood and foam designs, elliptical rails and concave bottoms. There are Velzy’s and Hap Jacobs’ boards as well, a veritable who’s-who of early California surfing, including Santa Barbara’s own Rennie Yater.

And this to say nothing of the hollow-frame constructed planks secured on the lee side of the barn, from the golden

era of Waikiki beach boys, when kanaka showed haole how to he’e nalu.

A personal favorite in Wayne’s collection is a George Downing spear that carries that slightly pulled nose of 1950s-era Hawaiian guns, which seems a likely influence on Pat Curren’s guns as well. And with the lineage from Wally Froseith, Fran Heath, and John Kelly directly influencing Uncle George in his Makaha designs, there’s deep resonance in that board.

You see, Froiseth, Heath and Kelly came up with the Hot Curl in 1937, which took surfboard design from the flat plank to a vee-bottom craft that could ride high in the pocket of steep and fast waves – and Froiseth was a father figure to Downing. If you’ve ever seen a photo of Downing’s board “Pepe,” then you’ve seen a perfectly proportioned surfboard, and the evolutionary design leap to the boards of today.

ing at The Surfer’s Journal down in San Clemente. Journal founder Pezman was, naturally, a friend of George’s, and one summer around 2005 or 2006, George was a house guest of the Pezmans and a frequent visitor to the magazine offices.

I was working on a triple stringer 10’0”, influenced by Skip Frye’s gliders in San Diego. I’d laid down an outline and was eyeing the curve out in the warehouse when George came ambling in from the front office. I explained to him my intention for the board and gestured at the penciled-in outline I’d scribed on the blank.

George bent his knees, held out his thumb with one eye squinted shut and the other sighting the shape from 20 paces out, and said to me, “Looks good, attack it!”

I carry those words with me to this day, and I miss just being in touch with those “old fellas” as the Aboriginals say of their elders. Miss my Dad too, who was in the mix of those Malibu-Hawaii days that continue still in our collective love of surfing.

There’s a wing-pintail single fin in Wayne’s collection, shaped by Mark Richards, that illustrates the moment, circa 1976, when MR asked the master, Dick Brewer, how he could improve his turning in small surf, combining his nascent ideas of incorporating two fins like he’d seen the great Hawaiian Reno Abellira riding in Puerto Rico. Brewer (just recently passed away, and missed by all who knew him), told MR to basically “split” the wing-pin design into two halves, making the venerable Twin Fin design essentially two single fins glued

side-by-side.

And while I ain’t no Brewer, MR, George Downing, or Pat Curren, that’s a concept I hang my shaper’s hat on every day. It’s all about clean lines and flow, after all.

For all these impeccable surf craft, for me, the pièce de résistance in the collection is from an unknown Hawaiian surfer in the 19th century. It’s a wood plank about nine feet long, with a pleasing nose outline and a long, tapering rail line. The deck is flat and the bottom of the board curves upwards in what are perfectly turned rails, minus the foil of the top-half.

Clearly shaped with intention, 45-degree bevels run out through the tail block.

And preceding surfboard traction pads by 150-years, a cross-hatched checker pattern is carved into the after-third of the deck. This surfer knew what he or she was doing – this was board for critical surfing moments.

Wayne and I talked about the societal forces that would have made this work of art and surfing achievement a mere anonymous relic of the past. Historical accounts of he’e nalu (the Hawaiian practice of surfing) exist from sailors and other early visitors to the islands, but these writings don’t go beyond the astonishment the visitors had at the act itself. The fact that it would have been “just some native” riding a fringe of reef somewhere as the colonial record was being put down, made the details of the act irrelevant in the written “history.” But of course, just because the shaping theory behind this board and the technique employed to ride it wasn’t written down in English, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen and wasn’t just as mind blowing as the surfing that goes down today.

And with this, I bid y’all adieu. We’re pulling up stakes, my gal and I. We bought a place down in Ventura, about four miles up the Ventura River from the coast, with a view of the channel and Anacapa Island. It’s just 25 minutes down the highway, but there’s no place like Carpinteria. Ventura-Ojai-Carpinteria, a triumvirate of beauty, so we’re still on one leg of the triangle, and you’re likely to see us rambling around, God willing, for years to come.

In the nearly ten years we’ve been here, since Ruben Gonzales so kindly rented us his casita where our boy Miles was born – a short walk to the Salt Marsh in what was the “barrio,” next door to the Razos and down the street from Ronnie Mendoza (now there’s some Carpinterians!) – we have been blessed to live in this magical town.

Moving out makes me think of a New Yorker cartoon I saw in the late 90s: a naked couple walking over the Brooklyn Bridge with ivy leaves over their privates, a Michelangelo-style arm and hand of God above, with a finger extended, pointing the way out of the “Eden” of Manhattan. We would stay here if we could swing it, but it’s above our pay grade. I love a whole lot of yaz, and I appreciate you letting me spill my surfing guts here these last couple of years!

Carpinteria Valley cannabis approaches a milestone Acreage cap will soon be filled, but odor control lags far behind

BY MELINDA BURNS This summer, cannabis growers will likely hit the county’s 186-acre cap on zoning permits in the Carpinteria Valley – now the largest greenhouse pot-producing region in California.

It’s a milestone that will trigger two critical deadlines: one of perhaps six months, officials say, for “legal-nonconforming” operators without permit approvals to stop growing cannabis altogether; and another, of perhaps a year, for growers with approvals to obtain a county business license or lose their place under the cap.

That’s good news for the grassroots’ groups that have sought to rein in the lucrative industry that has taken over the valley’s old flower greenhouses since 2015. But the milestone that many residents yearn for is much more elusive – an end to the “skunky” smell of pot that wafts into homes and neighborhoods and travels along with drivers on local roads, a smell that some say brings on headaches, nausea and breathing problems.

Carpinterians have filed 2,340 odor complaints with the county since mid2018, but county officials have said they can’t address them until all the growers have obtained their zoning permits, the next step after a formal approval.

To date, the county has issued permits for only 68 acres of cannabis. And even with all 186 acres permitted, officials say, it will be hard to pinpoint which operator is to blame for an odor because so many greenhouses are clustered closely together.

In the meantime, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors continues to churn out a steady stream of approvals for growers, fulfilling the primary mission it first set out in the cannabis ordinance of 2018: to “develop a robust and economically viable legal cannabis industry.”

A blistering county Grand Jury report would later find that the board “simply opened the floodgates,” altering the quality of life in this county “perhaps forever.”

“We ended up with a problem that couldn’t be enforced, even if everybody could agree there was an intolerable odor coming through the air,” County Planning Commission Chair Mike Cooney, who represents the valley, observed this month. “I’d say we’re honing in on an odor solution we’re determined to implement. But the process is not moving as quickly as we’d like.”

“It’s a lot like fighting the Russian Army. You can take a lot of them down, but there are always more coming.”

“Accepted practice”

According to the National Cannabis Industry Association, carbon filtration is “the most commonly used and recommended control technology” for reducing odors in cannabis facilities. Such filters have been routinely used for years in cannabis processing buildings where marijuana plants are dried, cured and trimmed, the smelliest stage of cannabis production.

In late 2020, for the first time, Santa Barbara County required filters called carbon “scrubbers” to be installed within a greenhouse cannabis operation in the Carpinteria Valley. The scrubbers have been shown to dramatically reduce the smell of pot before it can escape through the vents on the greenhouse roofs.

As of today, though, only three cannabis greenhouse operations covering 23 acres of cultivation in the valley are equipped with carbon scrubbers.

They are Ever-Bloom, at 4701 Foothill Road, a flashpoint in the cannabis “wars” because of its location close to Carpinteria High School; Roadside, a new operation

of the mist, which they compare to that of laundromat detergent.

The CARP Growers agreement does not set deadlines for replacing misting systems with scrubbers, Several member projects now under review, including Farrar’s at 5601 Casitas Pass Road, don’t include them. That project is set to be heard by the county Planning Commission Aug. 3.

Plowman said the county plans to hire an odor control consultant in July to assess the odor-control systems at cannabis operations, using data from weather monitors and other technologies.

If the growers’ misting systems aren’t working, “They’re going to have to up their game,” Plowman said. “They’re going to have to change their system if it’s not effective.”

The Carpinteria Valley is now the largest greenhouse cannabis-producing region in California. at 3684 Via Real; and CVW Organic Farms, at 1400 Cravens Lane, the first to implement the technology. All three are owned by members of the Van Wingerden family, which rose to prominence in the cut flower industry in the valley in the 1970s and 80s.

In addition, the county has required scrubbers to be installed within 12 months at four other cannabis “grows,” totaling 21 acres: Maximum Nursery at 4555 Foothill, a Van Wingerden operation next to Ever-Bloom; a Brand family operation at 4532 Foothill close to the high school; Cresco California at 3861 Foothill, operated by Cresco Labs, a Chicago-based corporation; and Creekside Blooms, a Van Wingerden operation at 3508 Via Real.

“We are advising applicants that scrubbers have become the accepted industry practice as a lot of growers have been starting to implement them,” said Lisa Plowman, director of County Planning & Development.

Also, she said, scrubbers conform with an August 2021 agreement between CARP Growers – an industry group that includes most of the valley’s cannabis greenhouse owners – and the Santa Barbara Coalition for Responsible Cannabis, a countywide citizens’ group. The growers pledged to use the “best available control technology” to prevent the smell of pot from drifting beyond their property lines; and in return, the coalition agreed not to oppose their projects.

Worst offenders

To date, the county has approved 166 acres of the maximum 186 acres allowed for greenhouse cannabis in the Carpinteria Valley.

But even if the 20 acres of cannabis still awaiting approvals are equipped with scrubbers, along with the 44 acres where the technology has been installed or required, that would still leave 122 acres that were approved for permits without scrubbers, or 65% of the commercial can-

nabis allowed under the cap.

Some of the acreage without scrubbers includes the five smelliest greenhouse operations in the valley, at least as defined by the past four years of odor complaints.

The following list is an imperfect measure. One “reporting party,” for example, identified only by number, has filed 200 complaints against 5601 Casitas Pass Rd. in the past 12 months. Another person was turning in bunches of complaints against 3615 Foothill by the week in 2020 and 2021, and each bunch got counted as one complaint. Many residents, discouraged by the lack of any meaningful response, say they have given up filing complaints.

In first place, with 356 complaints, is Mission Health Associates at 5601 Casitas Pass Road, co-owned by Graham Farrar, one of the top cannabis greenhouse owners and operators in California, and a past president of CARP Growers, and Kyle Kazan.

Just up the road, with 276 complaints, is Rincon Point Farms at 5775 Casitas Pass Road, owned by Thomas Brand and Tadd McKenzie.

In third place, with 252 complaints, is Farrar’s G&K Farms at 3561 Foothill Road, a greenhouse operation where Farrar hopes to construct a cannabis processing building.

Fourth, with 216 complaints, is Ever-Bloom, owned by Ed Van Wingerden, the only grower of the top five to install scrubbers. And in fifth place, at 3615 Foothill Road, with 195 complaints, is Autumn Brands, owned by CARP Growers President Autumn Shelton, and Ocean Hill Farms, owned by Kelly Clenet.

Most of the cannabis greenhouses in the valley are equipped with a first-generation odor control technology, originally developed for landfills, which release a curtain of mist from perforated pipes around the greenhouses’ outside perimeter or on the roof ridge lines to neutralize the smell of pot after it escapes into the air. Many residents have objected to smell

On May 24, the Board of Supervisors heard an appeal of the Ever-Bloom project that was filed by Concerned Carpinterians, a group of about 350 residents who have sought stricter regulations for the industry.

Representatives of the group urged the supervisors not to approve the project, scrubbers or no, saying it was too much cannabis, too close to the high school and the United Boys’ and Girls Clubs on Foothill. The health and safety of children was at stake, they argued.

When the board was drawing up its cannabis ordinances in 2017, cannabis critics pressed without success for a 1,000foot buffer, property line to property line, between commercial cannabis and schools and day-care centers. Federal drug laws allow stiffer sentences for the crime of distributing or manufacturing cannabis within 1,000 feet of a school.

Instead, the board decided to require 750- and 600-foot buffer zones, respectively, between schools and the cultivation of mature and “nursery” marijuana plants.

And the board said the zones would be measured from the school property lines to the greenhouse “premises,” defined as the marijuana plants under cultivation.

“I didn’t think the property line was the actual place to measure from,” Supervisor Steve Lavagnino, one of the chief architects of the county’s permissive cannabis ordinance, said on May 24, defending the board’s position. “It doesn’t smell: the plants do. Let’s measure from where the actual odor is coming from. I don’t understand why that was so controversial, and I still don’t.”

The northeastern corner of Ever-Bloom’s property is only 360 feet from the Carpinteria High School property line. As approved 5-0 by the board last month, Ever-Bloom is allowed to grow nursery plants, which do not give off a strong odor, in a portion of the northeastern corner of the greenhouse, outside the 600-foot buffer zone from the school.

In all, 101 scrubbers have been installed throughout the operation, one of the largest in the valley, with 11 acres of cannabis under cultivation. At $20,000 per scrubber, that’s an investment of more than $2 million. The machines are running around the clock.

“It is imperative that we become leaders because of our location with respect to sensitive receptors,” Phil Greene, president of Ever-Bloom, told the board.

Unimpressed, Ann Louise Bardach said Concerned Carpinterians wanted to go on record opposing what she called “the corrosive, corrupting power of the cannabis lobby.” She noted that the majority of students at the high school were Hispanic.

And even with all 186 acres of cannabis permitted, officials say, it will be hard to pinpoint which operator is to blame for an odor because so many greenhouses are clustered closely together.

Bardach’s husband, Rob Lesser, read a 2017 letter to the county from the Carpinteria school district in support of a 1,000foot buffer between schools and cannabis cultivation to protect student health and safety. (In recent years, district officials have not taken a position on cannabis; in 2019, they accepted a $189,000 donation from CARP Growers for a mental health and drug abuse counselor at Carpinteria Middle School.)

Concerned Carpinterians sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Los Angeles in 2020 and again this year, requesting an investigation of commercial cannabis growers operating within 1,000 feet of schools in the Carpinteria Valley. The group did not receive a response.

At the May 24 hearing, Ivan Van Wingerden, whose father, Ed, built Ever-Bloom in 1979 and became one of the largest producers of Gerber daisies in the U.S., told the commission that the “last profitable year in flowers” was 2011, a reference to the collapse of the local industry under an onslaught of cheap imports from South America.

By 2015, Van Wingerden said, the family had sold several of its properties. “It was incredibly fortuitous that cannabis came along,” he said.

Ever-Bloom supporters told the board that the smell of pot in the neighborhood was dramatically reduced, compared to three years ago. One speaker said cannabis was “just a crop change”; another called the critics “haters of marijuana” and said they were “over-exaggerating.”

Stephanie Theimer said she lives 500 feet from Ever-Bloom and rarely notices the smell anymore.

“I prefer living by this crop to any other,” she said.

Noting the growers’ yearly donations to local schools, commenter Chris Riley said: “I want to question the motives of the few people who are appealing this.

They need to be able to evolve through the times.”

In requiring scrubbers at Ever-Bloom, Williams said, the county was doing exactly what its critics have been asking for.

“To me, this should be a Kumbaya moment,” he said, “but it doesn’t seem to make anyone happier, at least those who are still in the fight.”

Lavagnino, who represents the Santa Maria Valley, called Ever-Bloom “THE project, the one that’s spending all the money to do it right.”

“It’s depressing,” he said. “It should be a moment where the community comes together. These used to be packed, overflowing rooms with altercations and people calling each other names, and I guess the fact that the place is empty, except for a few folks, is the sunlight in all of this.”

Before the vote, Williams took a final shot at his opponents, noting that the industry was supplying jobs for “a bunch of working people trying to survive.”

“It’s a happy day for my town,” he said, “… and a repudiation of the moral bankruptcy of NIMBYism, which seeks to protect children from a smell when it would deny them a place to live and it would deny them a job.”

Lawsuit on hold

Ever-Bloom is just one of six cannabis “grows” operating on 32 acres near the high school, a day care center and the United Boys & Girls Clubs, not to mention the dense urban neighborhood where Eckstrom lives. None of the other greenhouses in the vicinity are using scrubbers.

In 2020, the coalition; Paul Eckstrom, a resident of Manzanita Street in Carpinteria; and Marllus and Gregory Gandrud, then-residents of Chaparral Drive, sued Ever-Bloom and three other greenhouse operations on Foothill Drive, all owned by members of the Van Wingerden family, alleging that the “ever-present noxious odor” of pot was affecting the plaintiffs’ health and quality of life. The lawsuit is currently on hold.

Eckstrom’s bedroom window is less than 100 feet from Ever-Bloom. In recent weeks, he said, and for the first time in years, he and his wife have been able to open their windows during the day. At

Supervisor Das Williams, who represents the valley, lives there and has accepted past campaign donations from CARP Growers members, called the Concerned Carpinterians appeal “a train wreck” and “an indictment on the Van Wingerdens’ character” and urged critics to “bury the hatchet.”

“I have seen no one work harder or pour more money into odor control technology in the valley than this family,” Williams said.

night, though, he said the odor returns.

“The smell has been less here, but you don’t know when it’s going to happen in the evening,” Eckstrom said. “We start watching TV, and then we get hit, and it’s a rush to slam all the windows shut.”

Cooney says he has frequently smelled pot from the greenhouses during four years of coaching baseball at the high school, and he’s not the only one.

Here’s an anonymous odor complaint from the county list, dated Feb. 28, 2022: “As a parent whose two teenage children participated in baseball, softball and soccer, I have personally experienced the strong odor of cannabis during sports competitions, most likely emanating from the growers upwind of the high school baseball and softball diamonds.

“I am concerned that the powers that are in control have allowed such a proliferation of activity that has detrimentally affected the quality of life in Carpinteria without the cannabis grower permittees having implemented clean air technology BEFORE being allowed to start and/or continue said activity.”

Cate weighs in

Cate School, a private high school at 1960 Cate Mesa Road in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, is the only school and one of only two institutions in the county (the city of Goleta is the other) to file an appeal with the Planning Commission, asking it to deny a cannabis permit that had been previously approved by Plowman, the planning director.

To date, Cate has filed three such appeals. And, in 2019, school officials worked cooperatively with the county to shut down a 0.1-acre Van Wingerden “grow” at 6460 Casitas Pass Road that was within the 750 feet of the campus.

According to Charlotte Brownlee, an assistant Head of School who lives on campus with 56 other faculty members and 230 student boarders, Cate gets hit with the smell of pot every morning at 7 a.m. The stench of cannabis lingers into morning classes, Brownlee said: “We want the odors to stop.”

On June 1, Brownlee appeared before the commission to oppose plans for a 5.5-acre grow at 4532 Foothill Road, an expansion of 1.6 acres of cannabis under cultivation there now. Eckstrom joined Cate’s appeal on behalf of Concerned Carpinterians.

The project is managed by the Pacific Dutch Group, with Francis Brand as the operations manager Brand is a third generation Carpinteria grower and CARP Growers member who has transitioned the family’s business from cut flowers in recent years. At 4532 Foothill Road, he is using an odor-neutralizing misting system, also called a “vapor-phase” system, on the ridge lines of the greenhouse roofs.

As proposed, more than half an acre of cannabis cultivation, all of it in nursery plants, would lie within the 750-foot buffer zone from the high school, but outside the 600-foot buffer.

“We were about to close our doors for good,” Brand told the commission.

“Medical cannabis has allowed my family to continue in business.”

Brownlee asked the commissioners to require scrubbers as part of the zoning permit for 4532 Foothill, and to scale back the operation so that no marijuana would be grown within the 750-foot buffer zone.

The levels of “skunky” odors at Cate “vary in intensity, but they continue to be

problematic,” she told the commission.

“While we’ve been filing complaints for the last five years, we have yet to see any relief.”

Cate is not located within 750 feet of any current cannabis operation, but Brownlee said she was “advocating for schools.”

“These odors travel,” she said. “They are detectible in our dorm rooms, classrooms and across campus… We firmly believe that no students should be exposed to cannabis odors while they’re trying to learn. If a grow is allowed to operate in the sensitive receptor zone for one school – Carpinteria High School – this could become a precedent for other schools.”

Consultant: “We’re guessing”

Jared Ficker, co-founder of Axiom Advisors, a consultant for Brand and a prominent lobbyist on behalf of the industry during the drafting of the county’s cannabis ordinance, asked the commission for up to six months to gather more data on carbon filtration systems.

“Several carbon filters were tested on this site as part of the CARP Growers effort and found to be less effective than the vapor phase system,” Ficker said, adding that other models were still in the research and development phase.

Growers have to determine the right number of machines per acre and the best spots in the greenhouse to put them in, Ficker said.

“We think it’s a good idea not to spend millions of dollars throughout Carpinteria demonstrating the same technology, but instead find a bunch of different technologies, test them and figure out what works best,” he said. “…We’re guessing at what might work at some farms.”

But the commission didn’t like the idea of a long testing period.

“That can go on forever,” Commissioner John Parke, who represents the Santa Ynez Valley, said.

In the end, the commissioners voted 4-1 to allow Brand to grow nursery plants within the 750-foot buffer zone from the high school, so long as he builds a wall separating them from mature marijuana plants. In addition, they said, the greenhouses must be equipped with scrubbers within 12 months.

Chairman Cooney cast the only “no” vote.

“The kids, including my grandchildren, are waiting along with us to see if we can solve the odor problems,” he said. “… Twelve months seems like a long time to continue ‘bombarding’ the high school and Boys and Girls Club.”

On July 13, the Planning Commission will hear Cate School’s appeal of a project for nine acres of greenhouse cannabis and processing at 5980 Casitas Pass Road Cate is asking that the grower, Case Van Wingerden, be required to install scrubbers to control the smell of pot.

Cate also has appealed Plowman’s approval of Ceres Farm, a 10-acre cannabis greenhouse operation owned by Case and Alex Van Wingerden at 6030 Casitas Pass Road. The project is awaiting a commission hearing date, county officials said.

Deputies responded to a verbal dispute. During the investigation, the woman was contacted outside the residence and was uncooperative with deputies.

A traffic enforcement stop was conducted of a vehicle believed to be associated with an alcohol theft from a local grocery store. The driver was detained, but the passenger fled the scene on foot.

The passenger was later located in the 900 block of Walnut Avenue. Both were released to their parents, because they were juveniles, and the incident was forwarded to juvenile probation.

On 6/17/22, the victim reported his work truck was stolen in front of his residence. The vehicle was last seen at approximately 1730 hours on 6/16/22, and the victim discovered it missing at 0600 hours on 6/17/22.

Two people were stopped due to traffic violations. The man was asked to exit the vehicle to perform sobriety field tests. A meth pipe was found during a pat down search, and 30 grams of meth were found on him. Deputies physically restrained the woman after she did not stay in the patrol car. A baggie, with four grabs of meth, were found on the floorboard.

Deputies found narcotic sales – indica in the car, and a located .45 caliber handgun under the passenger seat. Both were transported and booked.

During a traffic stop for an inoperative brake light, it was discovered the driver had an outstanding warrant. He was arrested and booked.

The reporting party had filed an online report for a stolen bicycle. She called today to report seeing her bicycle in the back of a truck she was following through Carpinteria. Deputies located the truck and initiated a stop. The truck was occupied by two male probationers. One man admitted to being in possession of meth. The man was arrested and booked for possession for sale and transportation of meth. The reporting party responded to the scene, and determined the bicycle in the truck did not belong to her.

A man was refusing to leave. The reporting party signed a citizen’s arrest form and the man was taken into custody after a brief struggle, during which time he hugged a tree and refused to let go. A search of his person was conducted, and a meth pipe was located. He was transported and booked.

The reporting party stated a transient male holding a crowbar was walking through the alley near Rincon Brewery, in the area where a vehicle’s lights were going off. Contact was made with transient, who was holding a metal bar with nails attached. He was found in possession of a meth pipe and was arrested and booked.

The reporting party said an unknown female was setting up a tent in the courtyard of the property. A woman was contacted, and was found to have an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for her arrest. Taking the plunge

UNPREDICTABLE WILDERNESS CHUCK GRAHAM While kayaking and circumnavigating the Salton Sea’s 110 miles of coastline in California’s southeastern corner, the winter climes were a mild 75 degrees and the salty waters were beyond silky smooth.

It was so clear I could see a massive flock of American white pelicans two miles off in the distance resting peacefully on the surface, bathing their fluffy white feathers and plunging the shallows for briny shrimp. Eighty percent of the entire population winters in the Salton Sea enjoying those crisp cool nights and short arid days across the desert biome.

North America’s largest pelican, with a wingspan approaching 9 feet, doesn’t fly out over the ocean. And they don’t divebomb fish from above like their cousin, the California brown pelican. Instead, while sitting on the water, they simply plunge with their yellowish beaks.

They breed and nest in northern Montana and into parts of Canada, but once winter approaches, that Arctic air sends them migrating southward. Not all of them make it as far south as the Salton Sea. In California, they find plenty of winter havens along the way, seeking refuge in lakes, bays and estuaries in places like Morro Bay, Cachuma and Oso Flaco lakes and Elkhorn Slough.

Rafting Up

The American white pelicans looked so relaxed, as they roosted and preened on a floating raft of pickleweed inside Morro Bay. The ebb and flow of tidal surge had done its job, powerful enough to rip apart a thick raft of estuarian flora.

It was so thick that it could house at least 20 very plump white pelicans. It didn’t matter in what direction the raft was going, they were simply content peacefully drifting with the tides. When I came upon them, the raft was gradually drifting in the direction of Morro Rock.

I readied my kayak and made an easy launch on the eastside of the bay. Gently paddling in their direction, I pulled out my 300mm lens from my drybag as the bow of my kayak eased up on the edge of the raft of pickleweed. Now I was

I fired off several frames as they furiously preened their lily-white feathers.

As we drifted along, several more American white pelicans joined the fray. It became roosting room only, so I pushed off the raft with my paddle, and watched these migrants float northward.

In Sync

It appeared like synchronized swimming. Five American white pelicans were working together, corralling fish in the shallows of Oso Flaco Lake, a freshwater lake tucked away in the Oceano Dunes, just south of Pismo Beach.

A sturdy boardwalk crosses over the lake with bull thrushes swaying on either side of it, the ocean breeze filtering through across the freshwater lake. It’s a fine vantage point for spotting some of

the 200-plus bird species, resident and migratory birds sharing the shimmering, protected waters surrounded in thick riparian habitat.

As I rounded a bend in the boardwalk, I could see a blur of creamy white through the swaying bull thrushes.

American white pelicans were swimming in sync, side by side, in a half moonshaped formation, and then plunged their yellow beaks like swords into the shallows. Everything appeared synchronized. Their beaks sliced through the water simultaneously, then their tail feathers pointed upward, water filtering through as they lifted their heads and beaks out of the water full of baitfish.

There was an instance where on one synchronized plunge, one of the pelicans secured a larger fish the size of a carp.

The pelican made several attempts to swallow its catch, but it got stuck in its throat pouch. The pelican became despondent and separated itself from the

other four pelicans, the fish protruding through its yellow throat pouch. As time went on the pelican merely sat on the surface of the water showing very little activity. Meanwhile, another white pelican flew in, landing on its wide webbed feet, skiing to a halt right next to its counterparts. Immediately, a brand-new quintet formed, and they commenced with more synchronized fishing.

As the afternoon wore on, the white pelicans made several sweeps on the northside of the boardwalk, continuing to leave the despondent pelican alone, the fish still bulging through its yellow pouch.

Around the lake they scoured for fish, and then one of the pelicans scooped up another larger fish, possibly a Pacific staghorn sculpin. This time, two other pelicans tried to take it away, and as they jumped on its back, the pelican that secured the fish threw its head back, pointing its beak skyward, straining its throat pouch to gulp the fish. It appeared as if the catch filled the entire pouch.

After several attempts, the fish was thoroughly swallowed, and synchronized fishing continued uninterrupted on Oso Flaco Lake.

Carpinteria’s Junior Padres take district championship

Carpinteria Valley Little League’s Junior Padres finished a dominating season with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Saticoy White Sox to claim the District 63 North Championship. This is the first time a junior division team from CVLL has ever won the district championship.

“Carpinteria has had really good junior teams in the past,” said Tim Gray, one of the team’s coaches and father of the Padres’ catcher, Colten Gray.

“But to have this team accomplish what they did – honestly, I don’t think anyone thought much about this team until word got around about the quality of baseball these guys were playing. The community rallied around this team and started to come to the home games to see them play.”

Making this season’s success even more special is the fact that CVLL – which was founded in 1997 – celebrated its 25th Anniversary this year.

It was also a “last hurrah” for many of the teammates who have been playing baseball together for years, with several of the players heading to different high schools next year. It was also an accomplishment because many of the team’s players had spent the two years during the pandemic scattered across several club teams before reuniting again this season.

“It was amazing to watch and help coach these young men to a championship season,” Tim Gray said. “I’ve helped coach most of these boys since they were 5 years old starting in tee-ball and I have always loved watching my son play.”

The Padres have been on a tear since the beginning of the season; after taking their one and only loss in week three, the team hit a hot streak and finished the year 15-1, with many of the games won by a margin of ten runs.

In the playoffs, the team

rolled through the Dos Pueblos Little Giants (12-1) and Angels (12-2) to earn a spot in the Championship game, hosted at John Calderwood Field at Carpinteria High School.

“The team stayed loose, they were excited to play the championship game here at home on the high school field,” Gray said. “A lot of fans made the atmosphere really exciting, and they took nothing for granted. We had heard that this Saticoy team was good, so we just stayed true to our game plan and played good defense and tried our best to score runs.”

All season long the Padres were known to score lots or runs, but what coaches and parents are most proud of is the team’s reputation for leaving a lasting impression on umpires and opponents with their good attitudes and displays of sportsmanship throughout the year.

“My favorite part of the season was how these guys played with teamwork, confidence, and most of all sportsmanship,” Gray said. “I love each and every one of these players. I have some great memories being at the ball field with them, and I just want to wish them the best of luck in all of their futures.”

On Monday, Carpinteria’s beaches were packed with excited kids, eager to spend the next few weeks in the summer sun learning about marine safety and getting in beach workouts with the Jr. Lifeguards Program.

June 20 marked the first day of the seven-week program, which will run Monday through Friday until August 5, ending with an awards ceremony and barbecue. Since its inception, the program has become a go-to summer activity for

local kids, with many former Junior Guards moving onto work as lifeguards or participating in Carpinteria’s water polo and swimming teams.

This year, the city faced a lifeguards labor shortage and a waitlist of over 100 children before the Carpinteria City Council approved a $5+ per hour pay raise for staff. With the higher starting pay, the city was able to hire enough staff to supervise all the kids in the program.

The Junior Guards have four age levels this year: the A group (ages 14-17), B group (ages 12-13), C group (ages 9-11) and the newest addition of the “Mini” group (ages 7-9).

Expect to see the Junior Guards every weekday at Ash Beach from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., where the groups will be doing beach runs, open water swimming, paddle boarding, body surfing and competitions.

Arts Center smashes open summer with concert series

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center burst open summer with the first of five summer concerts last week – a “smashing success,” as put by former board chair David Powdrell.

Patrons perused both the outdoors concert as well as the center’s newest gallery exhibition, “Pivot: The Abstract of Will.” Powdrell said the dance floor was “hopping” as The Rincons, the series’ first feature, played, and called the concert a “home run.”

“The sold-out concert fulfilled our mission of celebrating creativity, inclusion, connection and community,” board chair Alan Koch said.

The series’ next concert is South on Linden, scheduled for Saturday, July 16, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
