On Tuesday, Santa Barbara County issued a local emergency due to the Alisal Fire, which is burning the northern coastal region of the county between Gaviota and Capitan. The fire was named for its proximity to the Alisal Reservoir.

The fire has resulted in the closure of both lanes of Highway 101, between Cathedral Oaks Road and the Highway 1 junction near Lompoc, and has prompted an air quality warning on Tuesday.

The fire began around 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 11; and as of Wednesday, Oct. 13, the fire has reached 14,500 acres with 5% containment, according to Mike Eliason, Santa Barbara County Fire District information officer. There are 1,300 personnel assigned to the fire, with more on the way, Eliason said.

More than 270 residents have been evacuated under evacuation orders, and 260 more are under an education warning. More than 100 structures are currently threatened. Dos Pueblos High School is hosting an evacuation shelter. For updates, visit readysbc.org/alisal-fire.

On Tuesday, Santa Barbara County Public Health Department issued an air quality watch for the area, due to the Alisal Fire, which is now burning on roughly 14,500 acres.

“Smoke and ash from the Alisal Fire could affect local air quality. Strong winds, locally and across the state, are also stirring up dust and ash into the air. This is a dynamic situation, and local air quality conditions can change quickly,” a press release from the county stated.

As of Wednesday, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria were seeing “moderate” air quality, while Goleta and Carpinteria were seeing “good” air quality.

Six-car accident brings Hwy 101 traffic to a stop on Sunday

On Sunday, two separate accidents brought traffic on the Highway 101 southbound to a stop, just south of Sheffield Drive near the construction zone.

The first accident occurred around 7:20 a.m., on the south side of Sheffield Drive, between two cars. Right after, a second crash happened in the same area, this time with four vehicles.

The highway saw both lanes blocked after the accidents, but crews moved the accident into one lane to help other traffic pass, by 8 a.m., although the immense traffic still caused heavy delays. The tow trucks cleared the area by 10 a.m.

The drivers suffered minor injuries.

Festival of Trees event returns for final year

Carpinteria Lions Club will hold its final Festival of Trees event later this month, offering Carpinterians the chance to get in on the last Christmas tree raffle run by the club.

Festival of Trees organizer, Lion Mike Dawson, said this will be the final year of the tree festival because the club is losing the downtown corridor, which he called the best location due to its proximity to the park, where the Christmas Parade and tree lighting happens. He said the club has been unable to find a large enough venue that can host, and invites comments from the public on options for a new location.

The club will open this year’s festival on Nov. 26, and it will run through Dec. 12.

The club is looking for sponsors for its 25 trees; previous festivals have raised over $250,000 in proceeds for local nonprofits.

Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce hosted its first ever State of the County event at the Santa Barbara Hilton Rotunda on Sept. 30, which was also the first live event for the chamber since the onset of the pandemic. Historical Society holds membership drive

Carpinteria Valley Historical Society has launched its annual membership drive, inviting residents to investigate Carpinteria’s fascinating history by visiting the local historical museum and becoming a card-carrying member.

The museum’s director and curator is the nonprofit’s only paid staff, with dues-paying members and donors supporting all historical society and museum activities.

The museum’s donations have been impacted negatively over the past 18 months with Covid-19 related closures and the cancellation or postponement of many exhibits and events, including the monthly flea market, the holiday faire, school visits and member field trips — not to mention the empty visitor donations box.

The museum reopened in June and has gradually begun to return to regular activities and programs.

“We do not rely on government funding,” said David Griggs, director/curator of the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society. “The Society’s primary sources of revenue are generated through membership dues, memorial donations, endowment fund earnings and fundraising activities.

keep us going.”

Membership dues begin at $25 for an individual, and benefits include a subscription to the history-packed bimonthly newsletter, The Grapevine, in addition to discounts for museum field trip fees and on purchases from the museum’s gift shop. Members also receive invitations to special museum programs and events.

For Sandy and Frank Crowe, who have called Carpinteria home for more than 40 years, being members of the historical society provide worthwhile perks.

“We supported the museum as members for years and always have enjoyed the perks membership affords our family and community,” the Crowes said. “We’re proud of the museum’s outreach to our community and visitors from all over the world.”

Griggs added that all interested folks are invited for a free tour of the museum. “October is the beginning of the new membership year, so now is the perfect opportunity for the community to join the Historical Society and lend their support.”

de Bruijn family seeks donations to fight cancer

Anne-Marije de Bruijn of Carpinteria has started a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money for her husband Martijn de Bruijn, 44, who has advanced cancer.

The de Bruijn’s have two daughters, Sophie, 9, and Olivia, 5.

Martijn de Bruijn was diagnosed with colorectal cancer four years ago. In the years since, despite undergoing years of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, the cancer has continued to spread to his lungs, liver, bones, small intestines and head.

“This is a critical time for Martijn,” said Anne-Marije. “A recent study was done on Martijn’s cancer in Europe to help determine the best route to go on treatments to tackle his cancer. From those results they discovered they could get most of these treatments done in Mexico. There are no effective treatments left available to him here in the U.S.” Anne-Marije said de Bruijn is determined to fight cancer and that with help from the campaign, he will be able to do the special treatments his medical team have determined the best option to help save his life.

As of Oct. 7, 69.1% of the eligible portion of the Santa Barbara County population is vaccinated. During the week of Oct. 1 – Oct. 7, the county reported 479 new Covid-19 cases.

County reminds residents of Covid-19 booster shots In its weekly newsletter, Santa Barbara County reminded residents of the Covid-19 vaccine boosters.

People over the age of 65, and people between the ages of 50 and 64 years old with underlying medical conditions, should receive the booster shot, the county stated.

Those who are eligible for the booster shot, but are not necessarily required to get the shot, including those between the ages of 18 and 49 with underlying medical conditions “based on individual risk and benefit” and those between the ages of 18 and 64 who “are at increased risk for Covid-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting,” per the county.

The only vaccine at this time eligible for booster shots is Pfizer. Residents who received the Moderna or J&J vaccine are not eligible for booster shots. Third-shot boosters can be given six months after the second dose of Pfizer. Primary care providers and local pharmacies are offering the booster shots.

“While the vaccines are extremely effective, the Covid-19 virus constantly evolves. Experts are looking at all available data to understand how well the vaccines are working, including how new variants, like Delta, affect vaccine effectiveness,” the county release said.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will hold an advisory committee meeting on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15 on emergency use authorization for booster

doses and Covid-19 vaccines for younger children, stated a release from the FDA. Currently, both the Moderna and J&J Covid-19 vaccines are authorized for emergency use for those over the age of 18.

“The committee will also hear presentations and discuss the available data on the use of a booster of a different vaccine than the one used for the primary series of an authorized or approved Covid-19 vaccine (heterologous or “mix and match” booster),” a release from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The FDA will also hold an advisory committee meeting on Oct. 26 to discuss the emergency use authorized of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine for children between the ages of 5 and 11.

“We know from our vast experience with other pediatric vaccines that children are not small adults, and we will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of clinical trial data submitted in support of the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine used in a younger pediatric population, which may need a different dosage or formulation from that used in an older pediatric population or adults,” Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock M.D. said.

All meetings will be available to watch on FDA’s YouTube page and social media.

The county also reminds residents to get their flu shots, which are available throughout the county.

“Seasonal influenza (flu) and Covid-19

More Covid-19 cases are seen among unvaccinated populations than vaccinated populations. viruses will be circulating this fall and winter and everyone 6 months of age and older is highly encouraged to get vaccinated against the flu. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe illness. A bad case of the flu can result in hospitalization or even death. Older adults and those with certain health conditions, are at high risk of serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated,” the county said.

During the week of Oct. 1 through Oct. 7, the county reported 479 new Covid-19 cases and 365 active cases for a total of 42,801 cases and 508 total deaths. As of Oct. 7, 69.1% of the eligible population within the county is fully vaccinated.

The county is also seeing higher numbers of Covid-19 among unvaccinated populations. Between the week of Sept. 25 and Oct. 1, the county reported 259 cases among unvaccinated populations, and 76 among vaccinated populations.

County identifies focus areas for pandemic recovery

The Santa Barbara County Executive Office (CEO) has identified six recovery areas to target in their strategic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, staff told the Board of Supervisors at the Oct. 12 meeting. Recovery focus areas are: Behavioral Health; Economic Revitalization and Employment; Community Health and Wellbeing; Organization and Technology; Housing and Homelessness and Disaster Resiliency.

Public Health is not included as a specific recovery focus area because the Department of Public Health’s pandemic infrastructure already has dedicated funding.

The focus areas were identified during the CEO’s review of key impacts in the health and human services sectors resulting from the pandemic. The study outlines provisions that will provide support and safety net services to those immediately economically, socially and emotionally impacted by Covid-19, as

well as address emerging mid and longterm recovery needs.

“Throughout the nation, state and locally Covid-19 has disproportionality impacted communities of color, low wage essential workers, seniors and historically underserved and marginalized populations,” Terri Nisich, assistant CEO, said in a letter to the Board of Supervisors.

“The strategies recognize the impacts to this population and provides a strategic framework for health and human services and disaster related services,” Nisich said.

The cost of the proposed strategies over a three-year period is estimated to be $46 million with the majority designated for housing and homelessness ($35 million).

To fully implement all strategies, Nisich said that the county must pursue strategic braided funding and enhanced community engagement and collaboration. They also noted that accelerated data gathering would be required to address equity and inclusion, combat uncertain-

October brings fundraising opportunities for CEF

Carp-a-CaBOOna event and Westerlay Orchids retail sales to benefit educational nonprofit The trick to October is to get the treat, and the Carpinteria Education Foundation gets an A+ in that. First, on Oct. 17, community partner Westerlay Orchids begins a weeklong fundraiser for the educational organization. The Carpinteria-based, family-owned farming business will give 100% of its retail shop proceeds to CEF for the fourth year in a row, according to Casey Balch, president of the nonprofit dedicated to advancing learning opportunities for all Carpinteria Unified School District students.

Last year, Westerlay Orchids raised nearly $24,000 for CEF. The funds raised through Westerlay Orchids are earmarked to fund STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and arts programming.

“We are honored to once again be the recipients of Westerlay Orchids’ generosity. They have provided much needed funding in support of amazing programs, from art and STEM to providing funding to ensure all students have access to technology,” Balch said.

Nancy Warner, family nurse practitioner, announces her retirement

After a 43-year-career as a local medical provider, Nancy Warner, family nurse practitioner (FNP), has announced that she will retire at the end of the year.

“It is with mixed emotions that I made the decision to retire at the end of this year,” Warner said.

Warner has worked in the Santa Barbara community for 38 years, the last 20 with Jackson Medical Group of Goleta and Carpinteria. One of Warner’s greatest pleasures was getting to know her patients and their families throughout the years.

“I have seen children grow into adulthood and I have cared for my long-time patients as they have aged,” Warner reminisced. “I will miss them all.”

Warner has been lauded for her compassionate care and straightforward approach while treating her patients.

Warner was recognized by The Angels of Medicine in 2009. And, in 2018, she was named “Person of the Year” by the Santa Barbara Coalition of Nurse Practitioners for her contributions to the Santa Barbara community.

Warner has enjoyed the challenge of providing high-quality medical care in an ever-changing field. “I feel privileged to have been a medical provider,” she said.

Costumes are encouraged for the dinner event, which includes a hosted bar as well as live and silent auctions. Tickets are $125 and proof of vaccination is required.

The 2019 Carp-a-Cabana, which was the event’s 27th annual, raised more than $160,000 for the Visual and Performing Arts in CUSD schools, according to CEF’s Web site.

It is with great sadness that the family of Raul Varela Gonzalez announce his passing in Carpinteria on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021.

Raul was born in Guanajuato, Mexico, and moved to Carpinteria in 1969, where

he settled with his loving wife of 65 years.

He was a loving husband, wonderful father, devoted grandfather and proud great-grandfather.

Raul’s work ethic was unmatched, providing valuable lessons for his family. He was a life long Dodgers fan – 1981 was his favorite season. Raul was a God-fearing man and read his Bible daily.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marina; his children Martha, Jesus, Raul Jr. Jaime, Maria and Lorena; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rosary will take place on Monday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Church. Mass will take place at Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, and burial will follow at Carpinteria Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the first responders and medical staff for their effort and compassionate care.

LETTERS Denied a vote

I strongly feel that if this proposed Surfliner Inn is built – and it looks more and more that it will be – Southern California will lose the very last little sliver of what was once a true paradise.

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in the ‘50s. What was a magnificent agricultural landscape now has become, with few exceptions, an overcrowded nightmare. Carpinteria, in its current form, is what attracts visitors. Visitors are not attracted by the city council’s ongoing effort to somehow make it more like Disneyland!

If, as the city council claims, its mission is to serve the city of Carpinteria and its residents, how did seeking out the developer to request a proposal for yet further commercial development serve the interests of either the city or its residents?

Carpinteria is the very last beach community remaining in Southern California. Every one of them is today only recognizable by a freeway off-ramp sign.

Each and every one of them has been ingested, consumed by development.

When you arrive in Carpinteria, there is an immediate feeling of being in a city – a real community, separate and recognizable as such. As rare as that is, how does someone come to take that so for granted?

How does anyone not realize how rare that is, how blessed we are to be able to call Carpinteria home?

A recent letter in Coastal View News gave the Biden/Harris administration low grades after nine months in office. But perhaps letters like this should receive low grades for failing to check the bias in their criticism.

Does anyone believe that people who frame their opinions through a stubborn and static loyalty to a point of view that defines anything Democratic as destructive – and all things GOP/Trump as perfect – can be a fair judge?

When people complain because the world doesn’t follow what they claim is Truth with a capital T, they are the ones who sow divisiveness, not others. And the lesson they teach is that when we embrace cynicism and negativity, we define ourselves as grumpy, unhappy people who don’t appreciate what we have. It’s sad.

Off-leash dog park sees split public support City Council approves extension of pilot program by one year

Carpinteria City Council unanimously voted to extend the pilot program for an off-leash dog park by one year, after Monday night’s meeting saw split public support over the program.

The piloted off-leash area, located at El Carro Park, first launched in October 2020 after a grassroots initiative earned city council approval. At Monday night’s meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Matt Roberts presented a report on the dog park and recommended that the council extend the program for one year – in part because of the pandemic, the department could not properly analyze any conflict that might arise between the offlease dog park and the organized sports leagues, which resumed in June 2021.

The dog park pilot program is largely run by the local nonprofit, C-Dog, that has volunteers present during afternoon and evening hours to help monitor the park.

Roberts said his office had received a few complaints about the off-leash dog park during the past year, but all had been nuisance related, not safety related, and the majority were from a nearby neighborhood.

The city council ultimately voted to move forward with extending the pilot program for one year, but not before more than a dozen people spoke during public comment, showing split support over the program.

The majority of those against the dog park came from the neighborhood bordering the park, Seacoast Village, and were complaints about noise, dog excrement left behind and interference

with organized sports leagues.

“I live adjacent to El Carro. I am not anti-dog. I’m anti-unnecessary noise disturbances coming over my back fence and into my living room,” George Lehtinen said.

Roberta Lehtinen echoed his comments, calling herself “one of the grumpy neighbors of the dog park” and stating she has had issues with the pilot program’s location. She said the dogs barking make it “impossible to enjoy yards” and recommended mesh muzzles for “frequent barkers.”

Patricia Mickleson, who said she had been a resident of Seacoast Village for 22 years, said that while she supports the one-year extension, “quiet days are few and far between.” She played a recording for the council of the noise that comes from the dog park in her back yard, and asked that the council extend the buffer zone 30-feet so that dogs must remain further away from Seacoast Village.

In turn, many C-Dog members were in attendance to support the one-year extension of the program, expressing how happy they were to have a place to take their dogs to socialize.

“El Carro has always been very special to me,” Jacqueline Urie said. “In the early days of the pandemic, El Carro was my place to take my pup, to get centered and connect and interact with those amazing dog owners and their pups.”

Evelyn Calkins, a freshman at Carpinteria High School, also showed her support, emphasizing that she has been “asking for a dog park since first grade.”

Jason Rodriguez also added his thoughts in favor of the park, calling C-Dog “an amazing group to the community.”

Lorainne McIntyre, C-Dog board member, said C-Dog has seen a “total increase in poop everywhere” in the past three months. She noted that C-Dog does a sweep of the field at the end of the day to pick up any remaining poop, but said that sometimes, organized sports arrive at the field before the group can get there to clean.

C-Dog and the Parks and Recreation Department will also look at the possibility of implementing this pilot program at other parks.

Council approves $60,000 for emergency housing voucher program

On Monday, Carpinteria City Council approved $60,000 for Carpinteria’s por-

tion of the emergency housing voucher program, which helps to decrease homelessness in the area.

Kimberlee Albers, a resident of Carpinteria who spoke at the meeting as a county representative, provided an update from the first six months of Phase II of the community action plan to tackle homelessness in the area, including rapid rehousing numbers, openings and the number of permanent housing units placed. She said the county had offered 215 long term housing subsidies – the emergency housing vouchers – over the past six months.

According to Albers, 42% of those in the emergency housing voucher program reported medical problems, 23% reported a substance abuse challenge, and 26% a chronic health condition or physical condition. Of those accepted into the program, 66% had previously been un-

California avocados were slimmer pickings in 2021 September price bump benefits Carpinteria ranchers

per acre, combined with the ability to seize late season prices, make Carpinteria Valley a prime avocado growing region.

For most California avocado growers, the 2021 season is in the rearview mirror, and due to supply fluctuations from Mexico, the 2021 avocado market was a roller coaster ride of price swings. California avocados harvested in the spring fetched an early season high of $1.64 per pound through mid-April, before prices fell off in June and July, bottoming out at $1.35 per pound for conventionally grown fruit on July 7. Growers who could hold their fruit until September 22 fetched a season high of $2.12 a pound. But no matter what the per-pound returns were, the 2021 California avocado season was low-volume at 257 million pounds, which has left a lot of ranchers picking up the pieces with measured optimism heading to 2022.

The season started off in a reasonable manner, but for those who waited for the end of the season to harvest, it was stellar,” said Rick Shade, owner of Shade Farm Management, which manages avocado ranches throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

Early estimates for next season, which technically starts Nov. 1, 2021, are for 300 million pounds of California avocados.

Peak harvest occurs late March through August, varying each year depending on weather and volume of fruit to harvest.

“The most difficult factor was weather – not much extreme heat and wind, but extreme drought is more troubling,” Shade said. “I’ve been doing this for four decades, and this is the driest year I can remember.”

Climate, water and the battle for profits

Avocado acreage in San Diego County has been contracting for decades due to the scarcity and high price of water. Of course, the entirety of California’s avocado growing region – San Diego to San Luis Obispo – has water issues, but the toll on San Diego ranchers has already shown itself in shrinking avocado production area and volume.

The price swings noted above benefited farmers from the north – mainly Carpinteria and up. San Diego County farmers do not have the luxury of hanging onto their fruit until September, when Mexico transitions in its harvest and California growers can often find peak prices in an undersupplied market. Growers in San Diego cannot leave their fruit in the more intense southern sun, where heat and drought cause it to mature more quickly and motivate growers to move it to market by summer.

According to Carl Stucky, a local farm manager and board member of the California Avocado Society, in years like 2021, Carpinteria ranchers are the envy of those in other hotter, drier regions of the state.

“California avocados can get a pretty well-established premium over imports,” Stucky said, “but Mexico sets the market.”

Mexico grows more avocados than anywhere else in the world, and the United States is its top customer. Annually, over 80 percent of fruit consumed in the United States originates from Mexico, which now sends over 2 billion pounds of avocados over the border each year. U.S. consumers can count on Mexican avocados throughout the year, which has led to avocados going mainstream and even becoming a cultural phenomenon often referenced as a luxury expense indulged in by millennials on toast.

The steady stream of Mexican fruit is what establishes the supply side of the marketplace, and California – the only significant avocado producing state in the U.S. – enjoys a premium over Mexican fruit; it’s just that the California fruit price depends on the inventory of Mexican fruit in the marketplace.

Historically, California growers could count on low supply from Mexico in September and October, which made it prime time to harvest. That window has become less reliable in recent years, but 2021 again had a pronounced price peak when Mexico was transitioning between crops, which it can stagger in harvest due to elevation differences in its avocado producing region of Michoacan.

The U.S. also receives a significant amount of fruit from the South American nations of Peru and Colombia, where growing regions are expanding due to high demand from Europe, the U.S. and developing Asian markets. Peru and Colombia are vying for a greater share of the growing global avocado trade. Chile recently played a significant role in the U.S. avocado market but has had well publicized drought issues that have led to a production slump. African nations like Kenya are also increasing production and establishing supply chains to Europe and the Middle East. Agricultural economies around the world are increasing plantings of “green gold,” and governments are assisting in the movement toward avocado production, making California fruit even more susceptible to the influence of the global avocado marketplace.

Organics march to their own beat

California organic growers enjoyed prices between $2.20 and $2.40 per pound through the 2021 season and remain largely insulated from price swings impacting the conventional market. Avocados from California generally fetch premium prices in niche markets, and organics are even more specialized. Selective shoppers will pay more for organic fruit grown in state.

As a global phenomenon, avocados have had their share of bad press for consuming resources and the influence of organized crime on the industry in places like Mexico. Public perception of foreign grown avocados as having negative climate and social impacts has led to more consumers wanting to vote with their wallets for better farming practices, making California fruit – organics in particular – an attractive option in the marketplace.

Sheep, goats, steers and teenagers grow up together CVN

A MONTHLY MUSE MELINDA WITTWER The Playa Del Sur 4-H Club of Carpinteria is once again gearing up for the Santa Maria Fair in July. Club members have purchased a variety of animals to feed, raise and train. Not only will the animals be judged and sold at the fair, but each club member can also compete in showmanship.

This Carpinteria 4-H Club has several acres of land along Foothill Road to provide housing and pens for all their critters. As of now, there are goats, sheep, chickens, steers and one cat. This area in owned and shared with the club by John and Walter Van Wingerden.

Unfortunately, in 2020, club members had purchased their animals, trained their animals, and provided constant feed and care only to have Covid-19 close down the Santa Maria and the Santa Barbara fairs.

This left these hardworking teenagers with no chance to sell their animals and recoup their investment. Luckily, many growers in the Carpinteria area joined forces and arranged purchases of all the animals cared for by club members, so no one would be out the cost of feed and their initial purchase price.

Now in 2021, these participants are back to work; President Lupita Loyola, Secretary Gizelle Lopez, Vice President Lucy Lashlee and Treasurer Alejandra Cruz were elected at the October meeting.

Lupita, Ale, Augustine Brace, and Caleb Rosborough are raising steers, Gizelle and Lucy will work with lambs and Blake Lashlee will raise one of the baby goats.

The two youngest club members, Samara Goodlett and Poppy Boersema, will be in charge of rabbits. More animals will be purchased as former members rejoin the group and new members are included.

Steers are born in March or April.

Auggie’s steer weighed 405 lbs at the beginning of October. When fully grown, a steer can be over 1300 lbs – not an easy animal to handle without a lot of training. The cost of buying a steer is roughly $1,500 and feed costs are $200 a month.

In July, these well-fed-and-cared-for animals will be shown by their owners at the fair in Santa Maria. Following the activities at the fair, the animals are sold, the sponsors are paid back, and the 4-H members get the rest of their earnings.

Usually, in non-Covid-19 times, a steer can bring in around $800 in profit. Fair participants also work to earn “buckles” in showmanship.

Besides raising animals, the Playa del Sur 4-H Club offers activities such as baking, grilling, carpentry, gardening, emergency preparedness and veterinary science. The club’s goal is to give all youth equal access to opportunity. 4-H Clubs

reach almost six million members with their hands on, learn-by-doing approach.

“Lead by example” is one of the many goals leader, Ron Vieira, has for his group of 4-H members. Each year, the club does two community service activities – its annual sock drive and holiday canned food drive. Any youth between 9 and 19 who interested in joining the Playa Del Sur Club can contact Ron Vieira at SB4H. org or (805) 451-4057. Generally, meetings are the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. at the 4-H Farm on Foothill Road.

Melinda Wittwer first moved to Carpinteria in 1972 and taught mostly junior high students in Oxnard during her 25-year career.

Now retired, she enjoys pottery, writing, books and travel.

The $60,000 is part of a one-time request for support services; Albers said that 4% of the total people on the request for emergency housing vouchers are from Carpinteria.

Councilmember Natalia Alarcon asked how the homeless population is referred to the program. Albers clarified that these numbers and referrals are collected through City Net or a multi-disciplinary team, who travel through the area and contact homeless individuals.

Downtown Trick-or-Treat canceled

Carpinteria’s regular Halloween downtown Trick-or-Treat festivity is canceled this year, City Manager Dave Durflinger confirmed.

“Unfortunately, it was canceled – another victim of the pandemic,” Durflinger said. “For everyone’s public health and safety, we’re not going to hold that event this year,” he said, in response to an inquiry from the council.

Concerns regarding changes to the vacation rental formula

During public comment, Jane Benefield, a member of Carpinteria’s Planning Commission, said she was not speaking for the commission, but she was “concerned about any proposal (that) deviate(s) from the vacation rental formula,” asking that the council does not extend the northern boundary of the current ordinance.

“This has been (requested) to accommodate a couple of owners who now have rentals that do not follow the law,” Benefield said.

“It would be nice if this worked, but there are too many pressures on the beach community, and what I see is a community dissolving – a bunch of strangers not committed to Carpinteria.”

Mr. Gomez showcases AP Chemistry class

After the first few weeks of Carpinteria High School, Mr. Noe Gomez’s AP Chemistry class is prepared to tackle a number of topics, including reaction kinetics, inter-/intra-molecular properties, complex stoichiometry and thermodynamics.

Gomez, who was trained as an agricultural biochemist, said he puts an emphasis on “the importance of application.”

“Pedagogical research dictates that applying newly-learned concepts greatly favors cognitive development,” Gomez said. “Therefore, in my class I strive to make sure that my students don’t just learn the how, but also the why.”

Gomez praised this year’s students for being “extremely inquisitive.” He also noted the teaching of their previous chemistry teacher, Mr. Westley Fairall.

Carpinteria FFA named Chapter of the Year Carpinteria’s Future Farmers of America have been named Chapter of the Year for the Ventura Section by the region’s supervisors. The honor was given to the Carpinteria High School (CHS) team at last weekend’s Chapter Officer Leadership Conference (COLC), held at San Benito High School in Hollister.

Teams from across the Central Coast attended the conference.

Carpinteria FFA was recognized for the team’s overall professional development activities and excellence in community representation.

The award comes on the heels of an outstanding showing for Carpinteria FFA at the “Opening and Closing” Ventura Section Public Speaking Competition the week prior, where numerous members received medals and the team placed first. The novice team of freshmen took home first place, a trophy that hasn’t been housed at CHS since 2010.

“Carpinteria is extremely blessed to have Mr. Salvador Lopez at the helm of agricultural education within our community,” Noe Gomez, agriscience teacher at Carpinteria High School, said.

“Mr. Lopez continually works to educate our community’s youth all the while instilling within them a growth mindset.

RANDY GRAHAM Halloumi is a semi hard cheese made from sheep’s milk. It originated on the island of Cyprus and was initially made there during the Eastern Roman Empire before gaining popularity throughout the rest of the Mediterranean region.

I doubt that the Cypriots paired their halloumi cheese with slices of watermelon but if they had, they would have loved the salty/sweet combination. When you slide the spiced halloumi and the watermelon off the skewer and into your mouth, it will put a smile on your face and your belly will beg for more.

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon ground coriander ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground sumac 1 teaspoon ground Allepo pepper 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 8 to 10 ounces halloumi cheese 1 small seedless watermelon 12 wood skewers (soaked beforehand in water)

Directions:

Preheat grill to medium-high heat (about to 500 degrees).

Mix the first five ingredients (coriander through black pepper) in a medium mixing bowl. Set aside.

Slice the halloumi cheese into 24 even cubes. Cut the watermelon into 24 equally sized cubes. Thread the halloumi and watermelon onto the skewers, alternating between them. Grill the skewers for three minutes on two sides or until charred and the halloumi starts to soften. Remove from the grill and serve while still warm.

Who goes there?

IN THE NATUREHOOD NANCY BARON One of my favorite things is to sit at the kitchen table with my husband Ken, and review the images captured on our motion-activated wildlife camera. These photos, as they pop up on the computer screen, reveal animals that I rarely see because they mostly move under the cover of darkness. Others are more familiar.

All are animals whose daily activities include a visit to the watering holes we provide. Some photos are better quality than others, but they all tell stories about the animals around us.

Water is the biggest draw for wildlife.

Birds crowd the bird bath and fountain, splashing about. The more secretive animals avail themselves to the water-filled buckets we bury lip-deep in the soil behind the garage or tuck under the canopy of a tree.

We position the wildlife camera, often called a camera trap, by one these watering holes, usually lassoed to a log. Then we wait, eager to see who goes there.

Over the years, we have been astonished at the parade of wildlife. Bobcats, coyotes, grey fox, opossums, skunks and raccoons quickly find these sources like watering holes in the Serengeti.

As much as the animals loved it, an embedded bucket in the soil was hard to keep clean. Raccoons leave dirty water from their nocturnal paw washing. Algae grew on the sides. Keeping the water clean (importantly) was a chore. I had to bail the bucket out, then scrub and bail again before refilling. I have since discovered that a shallow pot filled with water that can be easily dumped, scrubbed and refilled is easier. I usually place a stick poking out of the water, to help lizards and other small thirsty creatures climb to safety, if they fall in.

Eventually, we dug out a little pond to provide a more reliable water source.

We have added adjacent perches atop 20foot poles, that are frequented by hawks, bluebirds, woodpeckers and other birds.

Our first camera trap was given to us by a wildlife biologist friend who organized a massive study using these cameras to count cryptic animals in tropical forests in Africa, Asian and Latin America. The images captured by Tropical Ecological Assessment and Monitoring (TEAM) determine the number and diversity and animals and, incidentally, exposed poachers. The latter images proved to be

He or she comes at all times of day but is always stealthy. of interest to park wardens and wildlife authorities. The cameras work by having a beam that detects movement and triggers the camera. A startled expression staring at the camera is common. Camera traps are now commonly used to study wildlife.

At our home too, there are discoveries – laughs, tears and plenty of surprises.

The camera trap reveals birds that we seldom see, like roadrunners. The photos may only capture a body part, but it’s often unmistakable which bird or animal has made a cameo appearance.

From my kitchen window I watch daytime animals come and go to water.

But the camera trap captures moments we miss, and the night visitors. The unfurling photographs offer intimate portrayals of animal behavior. There’s plenty of scrapping and jockeying, but also tenderness, courting and comradery among many animals.

I was surprised to see how vultures gather together on the edge of the shallow pond then wade in together for a communal bath – rub a dub dub. They soak their feathers, drink deeply and spread their wings to dry. Then competing for the best drying perches, they unceremoniously push each other off, like in musical chairs.

Barn owls wade in, hoisting their feathered legs like pantaloons, then splash about.

Red-shouldered Hawks often bath in pairs. A drink, a bath and a rest on the perches is a daily ritual of the pair of Red-shouldered Hawks that nest nearby.

Occasionally we see sad things, like

a very sick coyote. This animal was a walking skeleton with almost no fur and desperate for water. Sarcophagic mange is often a secondary result of predators eating poisoned rats or other prey. The poison compromises their immune system and enables mites to overrun them.

They die slow, agonizing deaths.

Most often however, the camera reveals wonderful glimpses into the lives of the wildlife around us. Every time I go away, I can’t wait to get home and see what the camera has captured.

Putting out water, especially in these times of drought is an extremely helpful thing you can do for wildlife. If you rake sand around the water container you may observe tracks that reveal who has gone there.

This past weekend, Carpinterians gathered to celebrate the release of the new book from the arts center, “Small Town Big Art.” At right, dancer Nicole Powell offered up her talents during the celebration.

Arts Center celebrates release of “Small Town Big Art” PHOTOS BY ROSANA SWING Highlighting some of Carpinteria’s talented artists, the Carpinteria Arts Center celebrated the release of “Small Town Big Art,” a book spearheaded by Carpinteria’s David Powdrell, this past weekend.

The hardcover, 212-page book centers on 100 Carpinteria artists. Powdrell, who said he “woke up in the middle of the night” over a year ago with the idea for the book, called the book a “win, win, win” for Carpinteria. The weekend event gave major donors a first look at the release of the book and a chance to raise more money for the arts center.

“I’m a crybaby, and I cried (at the celebration.) It was more than I expected, the book was more than I expected, the people who were involved behind the book were more than I anticipated – the event was spectacular,” he said.

“With a population of 14,000 people (in Carpinteria), I’m convinced there are 14,000 artists,” Powdrell said.

So far, the book has brought in a little

under $45,000, Arts Center Executive Director Linda Rosso confirmed; all the proceeds will go back to the arts center.

“This was (Powdrell’s) baby,” Rosso said. “It was great to hear (the artists’) perspective on things, and show appreciation to David and his crew for organizing and implementing such an overwhelming project.”

Rosso praised the book, calling it “beautiful” and “really something special.”

“It was a celebration, not just because of the artists, but because Carpinteria was recognized as an artist community.

This community is so war, so giving – it showed (this weekend). People were happy,” she added.

Powdrell said the center printed 1,200 copies of the book, and that they’ve pre-sold 300 so far. The book costs $50. To purchase a copy, which will be available in mid-November, visit carpinteriaartscenter.org. Once the copies are released, Powdrell said the center will hold an autograph signing for the book’s artists.

To honor the California Avocado Festival, Rincon Brewery has released an Avo Festbier with a label that pays homage to John Wullbrandt’s mural “The Carpinteria Valley: A Growing Heritage.” Wullbrandt’s mural, an ode to Carpinteria agriculture, faces the soon-to-be California Islands Museum entry garden on Carpinteria Avenue.

The label features a detail from the mural of a pair of ripe green avocados and avocado pits – celebrating Carpinteria’s rich avocado history, as well as the festival, which was postponed this year due to Covid-19. The Avo Festbier is 5% ABV and is marketed as an “easy drinking festival lager,” brewed with avocado pits and German malts. The beer is available at all Rincon Brewery locations on tap or in a bottle.

The center hired an artist to paint her interpretation of the celebration, David Powdrell said.

Día de los Muertos celebration set for Halloween

Artesania para la Familia invites Carpinterians to celebrate Día de los Muertos at the Carpinteria Cemetery on Halloween day, Sunday, Oct. 31.

Artesania para la Familia will offer cultural performances, alter installations, crafts and more activities. This is the 10th annual Día de los Muertos family-centered event, hosted by the organization. It will be held between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Going alone

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH I slip my wedding band off and lock it in the car each time I go surfing. The ring is a little loose on my finger, and I don’t want to lose it. Down to just my wetsuit and board, jogging off to hit the waves, I always feel I’m slipping away from my “real” life even if just for an hour.

The feeling isn’t relief, exactly (that might be a problem), but it is a welcome break when I touch back in with myself.

Still, there is that moment, that slight twist-and-pull, when I remove the outward symbol of my commitment to my wife and our children, and move through the world as a man on his own.

To be clear, and fair, my wife takes her ring off on the job too (I suppose surfing is part of my “job”). The glittering little diamonds are not well suited to placing plants in the gardens she designs. But this ring-on vs. ring-off business has me thinking about surfing (and sailing), and what constitutes reasonable expectations in the midst of guiding two little ones through childhood and partnering with a spouse, emotionally and financially.

Bottom line, we’re either there for the people in our lives or we are not.

But surfing and sailing present particular challenges to the traditional family dynamic. By surfing and sailing I don’t mean an occasional paddle once the rest of the chores are done, or an afternoon out to the buoy and back in the Santa Barbara Harbor. These activities are great and fun, but I’m referring to wilderness shores and the weeks it sometimes takes to get there and return.

There’s simply no justifying bigger journeys, except with a slender excuse that there could be some money it for the family once a surfing article gets published – but that’s a stretch. Yet somehow, I manage a few trips a year by myself and lots of other more localized surfing, mostly because my wife is a very cool woman who understands that

I often think that it’s important to keep surfing and doing the things that I love because of the example it sets for my daughter and son. That may be the world’s greatest justification, but I believe

it’s true. And I am home every night, except for those few trips a year, and we love our family weekends together too.

Also, because I limit my travel (Covid-19 restrictions notwithstanding), and even my day-in-day-out surfing, I’m still pursuing it here into my 50s with the same enthusiasm as when I started at 10-years-old.

“Sprints and lulls,” is my approach. I’ll go flat out for three days of a good swell, then not get in the water for a week. It’s easy, after all, to get in the habit of a daily routine, to simply work and come home and cut out “extraneous” activities, but it is the infusions of nature, magic and exercise, that make me feel whole.

Aside from whether or not I keep my wedding band on when I go surfing, I’m feeling a travel itch that I’m sure connects

to Covid time. We cancelled a family trip to the Yucatan Peninsula last summer (not a surf trip, but it would have been great) because of the Covid numbers there. In addition to the potential danger in it, we also felt it would be rude somehow to press ahead with vacation plans when the people there were on the brink of yet another lockdown.

So now I’m thinking of some trips I’d like to do to connect with a few people around the world, and get that shift in perspective that only comes from changing the backdrop. There’s Ireland, of course, but also Cornwall. And Spain.

I need to see some folks in Hawai’i. And New Zealand. It’s a long and ever-growing list.

The reality, for now, is that I am very fortunately living with my family and working hard every day shaping surfboards. I’m on Daddy Duty most afternoons these days because my wife is juggling multiple projects, teaching at City College, and on the board of the Central Coast Green Building Council.

Yet I realize that life does not get better than this. We are so very lucky, in regard to our health, personal economies, and our children. There does seem to be some element of the divine in it all. (And I’m hoping that I don’t come off as boastful here.)

I leave to shape at about 6:30 a.m. so I can pick up the kids when school gets out. It doesn’t feel like enough time to devote to my business, but my wife is fully booked these days. Looking back, I realize that there have been many years when she took on the more-traditional role of caregiver while I went off to work, to say nothing of the effort it took for her to grow and birth the kids too!

The trick in life (if “tricks” in life actually exist), I think, is to balance responsibilities with opportunities for adventure, remembering that time is elastic: sometimes pressed down tight with no room, other times expanded and languid. Clearly, the clock is running, and no one knows what calamity may befall them, but it’s the littlest things that keep the fire lit.

And finally, an update on our friends in Australia and the husband who was nearly lost at sea in the Timor Strait: He seems cured, finally (or at least temporarily), of his need for reckless adventure and is gratefully allowing his wife to have her say as to what they’re doing as a family.

Miraculously, his boat was found adrift, back near Timor, and someone moored it for him back in the harbor he started from.

I’m pretty sure he kept his ring on throughout the whole ordeal.

New yoga classes offered at Woman’s Club

One of the Carpinteria Woman’s Club’s newest classes focuses on relaxation, offering a chance to wind down for the night.

Aubry Watkins, who recently moved back into the area, is leading a candlelight hatha yoga class at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club. Watkins brings 10 years of practicing yoga to the table, and got certified to teach just last year.

Watkins spent every summer growing up visiting her grandparents in Carpinteria; she grew up in Idaho and lived in Carpinteria for a few years in 2015, before returning to the area recently.

“Carpinteria holds a very special place in my heart,” she said. “We have this family house here in town, so I had this opportunity to move here and try it out.”

When she previously lived in Carpinteria, she attended the Woman’s Club yoga classes and “fell in love with it.”

“I thought when I was going to those

classes, ‘I want to be here, teaching people.’ I believe I’m actually in it right now.”

Watkins previously taught a yoga class in Idaho, which shut down in-person operations due to Covid-19. She said she attempted teaching yoga online, but said it “didn’t feel right.” When she came back to the area, she decided to reignite her passion for yoga by teaching at the Woman’s Club.

She said she is excited to return to teaching yoga, especially in Carpinteria; the class is one of the few yoga classes offered in Carpinteria itself, and Watkins said she has heard from class attendees so far that it’s nice to not have to drive “all the way to Santa Barbara” for evening classes. “(Hatha yoga) is a way for me to slow the heartrate down and get into this ‘rest and digest down,’” she said. “Your parasympathetic nervous system starts kicking in, and it helps you slow everything down so you can sleep.”

Trash & Recyclables or Green Waste Pick Up Information for the Christmas & New Year's Holidays

In observance of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the employees of E.J. Harrison & Sons will be taking the days off. As a result, Carpinteria residential customers will have their trash and recyclables collected on Friday, Dec. 27, and their trash and green waste on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 – one day later than usual.

The regular Thursday trash collection schedule in Carpinteria will return on Jan. 9, 2014.

Residents may put out twice the amount of trash at no extra charge during the two weeks following Christmas. Please make sure the trash is in bags. We will also collect extra recyclables, but please make sure to flatten all boxes.

Chamber group conquers Costa Rica

A group of 24 travelers joined Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce and touched down in Costa Rica in early November. They visited San Jose, Poas Volcano Park, La Fortuna, Arenal Volcano National Park and Monteverde. Scape holds climate art show & conference

Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment (SCAPE), along with the Climate Reality Project (CRP) are presenting a two-day art exhibition and conference to benefit the Community Environmental Council (CEC) and the Los Padres Chapter of Sierra Club. On Saturday, Montecito Fire Chief Kevin Taylor, Wildlands Fire Specialist Nic Elmquist, Professor Leila Carvalho and retired Santa Barbara Fire Chief Pat McElroy will discuss the significant impact climate change is having on wildfires in California. The speakers will discuss specific challenges climate change presents to wildfire resiliency on the Central Coast through a facilitated discussion of the natural landscape, fire behavior, meteorology, South Coast Fire History and personal observations from the front lines. Carpinteria’s rich basketball history celebrated with Court of Champions

There was plenty of Warrior pride, and the local basketball world showed up strong at an especially red-and-black tinged ceremony for this year’s Santa Barbara Basketball Court of Champions on Sunday, where almost all of the 15 new inductees – including Coastal View News – came from Carpinteria.

The 2021 ceremony was hosted on a sunny afternoon at Carpinteria High School’s outdoor amphitheater, held in person and open to the public for the first time since 2019, after forgoing a year due to the pandemic.

The Court of Champions was established in 2014, and so far, 82 members have been recognized for “contributions to the community of Santa Barbara through the game of basketball,” said committee member Curt Pickering.

Retired Westmont basketball coach and 2019-20 NAIA Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year John Moore emceed the event with special guest and former Santa Barbara High School and Los Angeles Lakers star Jamaal Wilkes. Moore introduced and interviewed each of the 15 honorees, which included former Carpinteria players and coaches, Westmont’s 2021 NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship team, and ESPN/Los Angeles Clippers announcer and local legend Brad Jay. “I have officially arrived,” Jay said. “I never thought that the 11 years I worked in the NBA as an announcer would bring me honor at a local level. Very honored for this.”

Coastal View News was also recognized at the event, for its work in covering local sports for over 26 years.

Current and former Carpinteria High basketball coaches Henry Gonzales, Butch Breeden and Deron Carbajal were among those inducted into the Court of Champions. Breeden also coached at

Westmont and with the Santa Barbara Breakers Pro Level team. Gonzales and Carbajal both coached and played for the Warriors, and Carbajal also worked as an assistant at SBCC. Standouts from Carpinteria’s deep basketball history like Ryan Reed, George Schnackenberg, Matt Ruiz, Jacob Ranger, Sarah Grieve-Miller, Kevin Kenney, Ann Latham and Cathy Caudillo were also inducted to the Court of Champions.

Several of these former Warriors went on to play or coach at different level across the world; Reed played at LA Baptist and founded the Indian and Maverick youth travel teams; Schnackenberg played at Hawaii Hilo; Ruiz coached at SBCC and Long Beach State; Ranger played at UC Davis and Cal State San Marcos before coaching at SBCC; GrieveMiller played at Cal Poly; and Kenney played at Point Loma and UCSB before signing a professional contract overseas in the Netherlands.

Several of the inductees were nominated for contributions off the court, but just as important to the basketball community, like Jay, Coastal View News, and former Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club Director Rich Medel.

Medel was recognized for his work with the youth basketball community, starting several programs and travel teams and fostering generations of strong young players that make up Carpinteria’s rich basketball culture.

The nominees are selected by a committee of seven local sports figures, including journalist John Zant and Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Famer Holly Ford Emerson. This year was the first that nearly every honoree represented the Carpinteria community, in an amazing show of Warriors pride on the basketball court.

New doubles partners Ariana Lounsbury and Stephanie Ramirez went 3-0 in their first outing together, only dropping one game in the process.

“Both played well and seemed to connect on the court which is sometimes hard to do in new partnerships,” Bryant said.

In singles, Porinsh and Leonard both swept the day. The two have dominated this season, playing a huge part in the Warriors’ success.

Carpinteria is now 10-4 overall and 6-0 in the Citrus Coast League, with matches this week against Hueneme and Fillmore.

Warriors on fire on volleyball court with three in a row

After hosting the Fall Classic Tournament, the Carpinteria girls volleyball squad got back into league play with a three-game tear -– picking up a trio of quality victories against Hueneme, Fillmore and Maibu in the past week.

At home against Hueneme, the Warriors caught fire, sweeping the Vikings in three straight sets: 25-13, 25-12, and 25-11.

Senior setter Marlene Sanchez set another record with 11 aces, and outside hitter Alex Zapata had a big night with 12 kills and four aces.

Two days later, the Warriors hosted the Fillmore Flashes for Senior Night, and Carpinteria’s five seniors – Sanchez, Zapata, Rayana Beaver, Serena Smith and Madi Mora celebrated one of their final games at home. Zapata showed up big for her class with 12 kills and three aces, and junior Ainsley Anderson also had a strong part in the victory with nine kills and three aces of her own.

After the weekend, the Warriors took to the road for a Monday night fight against the Malibu Sharks, in a battle for second place in the Citrus League.

“The evening was highly spirited and jam-packed with enthusiastic crowds from both schools,” coach Bret Shellabarger said.

The Sharks drew first blood, Shellabarger said, stealing the first set 25-11. Carpinteria roared back for three straight sets and took the victory 3-1. Sanchez did a good job disrupting her opponent with seven aces for the evening, and junior Jada Priess had six blocks converted into Warrior points.

Carpinteria is now 6-3 in league and will face off against the Nordhoff Rangers at home in their final league match of the season.

The top-ranked Warriors water polo team headed into the two-day tournament hosted by the Buena Bulldogs ready to build on an impressive season; the team took the first two games on the first day, but stiff competition handed Carpinteria two losses on the final day.

On day one, #1 Carpinteria faced #3Buena for a rematch between two of the top teams in CIF Division 5. In a close game, the Warriors never played behind, and sailed to a 14-12 victory. Asher Smith led the scoring with six goals, while Mateo Handall added five of his own.

The Warriors faced Brentwood next, jumping to a 6-3 halftime lead before finishing strong with a 12-6 win. Smith scored another six goals, while four other players chipped in scoring for Carpinteria. Goalie Jacob Taff had a great game with 11 saves and three assists.

Day two was another story, with Carpinteria taking two tough losses to Newbury Park and Camarillo. Newbury Park won 13-11, and Camarillo took off with a 12-9 victory.

Though the team finished fourth overall, Otsuki said, there was a lot to learn from playing higher competition. “The Warriors were within striking distance throughout both games and conceded nothing to the opposition,” he said.

Carpinteria is now 15-4, and will play against Nordhoff on Thursday.

Carpinteria struggles on the road at Fillmore

The Warriors were shutout for the fifth time of the season on the road at Fillmore, where the Flashes put up a lot of points in the 60-0 win.

Carpinteria drops to 0-7 on the season, and will now prepare for the Homecoming game on Friday against Nordhoff, who enters the Citrus Coast League game with a 5-3 record. In their last game, Nordhoff beat Santa Paula 21-14, in a league bout.

Warriors cross country competes in Twilight Invitational

The Cross Country team competed in the Twilight Invitational at Lake Casitas last week, with runners in both the 3-mile and the 1.9-mile races.

Kate Cooney was the girls top performer for Carpinteria, earning a medal and finishing 19th with a time of 21:47.9. Belen Herrera was the next best Warriors finisher at 23:50.5.

Marvin Lujano was the top finisher for the boys in the 3-mile race with a time of 17:44.3.

In the 1.9-mile race, Carpinteria’s best were Mika Mullikin for the girls (17:44.2) and Josh Ceja Marvin Lujano was the fastest Warrior for the day. for the boys (14:46.4).

Carpinteria will compete next at the second Citrus Coast League cluster meet at Santa Paula on Oct. 14.

Cate football rolls to 5-0 on season with 62-8 Warriors girls tennis extends league streak to victory On a Thursday night on the road at Santa Clara, the top-ranked Cate 8-man football six straight wins team rolled to another high-scoring victory, 62-8 over the Saints.

Carpinteria has another girls squad on a Citrus Coast League streak on a different court – the CIF #4 ranked Warriors tennis team, who picked up two more wins this week against Nordhoff and Santa Paula, extending their league record to 6-0.

Following a big win against league rival Malibu, the team went into a match against a young Nordhoff team with confidence, earning a 15-3 victory that coach Charles Bryant said was much closer than the final score showed.

“We had a bit of a slow start and really had to fight hard to get through the first round,” Bryant said. “Many of the sets were close but we were able to pull away towards the end.”

Carpinteria gained steam through the final two rounds, Bryant said, and earned the victory.

“In singles, I was really impressed with both Silke Leonard and Zahra Porinsh,” Bryant said. Stephanie Gonzalez went 1-0 in singles, and the Warriors’ doubles teams swept Nordhoff on the way to the hard-earned win.

“All were challenged but seemed to win many of the big points and sudden death points, we made some of these close sets one-sided because of winning those types of points,” Bryant said. “It was not an easy match for us. We had to work hard and the Rangers are a talented team. Overall, I was really happy with how we overcame our slow start and how we seemed to get stronger as the match went on.”

Carpinteria switched up its lineup for the match against Santa Paula, but kept up the momentum with another 15-3 victory over the Cardinals.

The Rams are now 5-0 on the season, and 1-0 in league play.

“Senior Ethan Ligon scored in just about every way possible,” coach Ben Soto said.

Ligon started the game with a big 77-yard kick return for a touchdown, scored as a receiver, and on defense with a pick-six for 22 yards.

Senior quarterback Will Bouma continued his solid season both running and throwing for a touchdown. In addition to the Rams standouts, every player got some action in the win.

“All players who suited up, saw plenty of action on the night,” Soto said.

Junior running back Zaq Asuamah ran for a score, and sophomores Kristian Scurtis, Thomas Paige and backup quarterback Pen Brooks all reached the end zone.

The only blemish in an otherwise perfect game was the injury of senior Ben Meyer, who suffered a broken ankle that will cause him to miss the remainder of the season.

“A great leader and player - big loss for us,” Soto said.

Cate will try to extend to 6-0 against Thatcher on Saturday, Oct. 23.

Flag-signing event honors Japanese American internees of WWII camps

Eight local residents who were interned in WWII incarceration camps for Japanese Americans were honored in a flag-signing ceremony last weekend, an event organized by Carpinteria Mayor Wade Nomura. The survivors met at City Hall to sign a WWII era, 48-star American flag, and to share their stories with the public.

The event is part of an effort to get all internees to sign a WWII era, 48-star,

American flag that will be donated to the Japanese American Museum in San Jose on Fred Korematsu Day, Jan. 30. The flag signed at City Hall has made its way through most of the Western U.S. states and will soon head to Arkansas to visit for ceremonies at two internment camps.

The nationwide initiative was organized by Judge Johnny Cepeda Gogo of Santa Clara County, who also attended the Carpinteria event.

“We appreciate what Judge Gogo has done to retain much of this history with the Flag Project and also those that came out to sign the flag and place their names in history,” Nomura said.
