Spirit of Entrepreneurship joins Women’s Economic Ventures

For nearly 30 years, the local nonprofit Women’s Economic Ventures has assisted women in business. On June 13, WEV announced that it will be integrating into its organization the Spirit of Entrepreneurship Foundation, a formerly separate nonprofit that recognized women and student entrepreneurs in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. “All of us at WEV are moved and grateful to be entrusted with the legacy that has been established by the Spirit of Entrepreneurship Foundation,” says Marsha Bailey, chief executive officer for WEV.

Meet the neighbors—Woman’s Club hosts cannabis growers’ panel

The times they are a-changin’. On Wednesday, June 13, the Carpinteria Woman’s Club held their regular meeting with a panel of special guests—four Carpinteria Valley cannabis growers.

In her welcoming remarks, Woman’s Club moderator Mary Beth Carty spotlighted the floral décor that included dahlias, gerberas and marijuana leaves, commenting, “the flower arrangements are a beautiful merging of our old and new agricultural specimens.”

Members of the newly formed CARP Growers Association, Graham Farrar, Kristin Van Wingerden, Ed Van Wingerden and Michael Palmer, served as panelists. CARP Growers have publicly committed to adhering to state and local rules, strict environmental guidelines that go beyond regulations and a forwardthinking code of ethics. Throughout the evening, the four panelists conveyed the message that they are listening to the public and actively working with county officials and neighbor-growers to set best practices for the emerging industry.

“Had someone three years ago said, Ed you’re going to be growing cannabis, I would have said, ‘No, I’m not, what are you smoking?’”

But, today, after 40 years growing flowers, Ed Van Wingerden’s Everbloom greenhouses are filled with cannabis. Van Wingerden outlined the economic impact of the free trade agreement with South America on the local flower growers in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Particularly when pressure was put on poppy growers in Colombia to stop producing for the illegal heroin market, and prompting many growers there to produce flowers for export instead.

While mums and carnation growers were deeply impacted by the lower-cost imported flowers, Van Wingerden stayed afloat with his gerbera daisies, which are difficult to grow and delicate for packing. That is until the currency exchange with Canada dramatically shifted from a nearly 1 to 1 ratio to 1.3, sometimes as high as 1.38 Canadian dollar to 1 USD. At that point, Van Wingerden was being undercut by up to 38 percent by Canadian competitors.

Odor control

When Carty asked the panelists about the challenges they’ve faced, the group acknowledged that the odor and the public’s unhappy response was at the forefront. Palmer, who grew up on a cattle ranch in Utah, said that when he and others started growing cannabis a few years ago, the budget was tight with not a lot of money to invest in infrastructure, but now after much trial and error, his greenhouses utilize an odor control system that mitigates odors very well.

“We tried different kinds of machinery and now we have some machines that work really well, so we’re out in the community trying to get growers to come by and see the machinery we have and to be in compliance,” said Palmer.

before, with the Cannabis Council of Santa Barbara. “We’re trying to figure out what people’s concerns are and work with the county (to figure out) what we need to put in the ordinance to make it work. It’s a long process. We’re still getting there.”

Both Palmer and Van Wingerden expressed that once the county begins to enforce regulations—including a compliance code for odor control—a lot of the problems will be remedied.

“If every grower put in an odor control system we would not be talking about it anymore and that will change when the county really puts its teeth into compliance,” said Van Wingerden.

Medicinal marijuana

One of Carty’s simplest questions, “What excites you most about this industry?” elicited impassioned responses from panelists.

Software.com and Sonos entrepreneur, Farrar, who is relatively new to the agricultural sector, spoke immediately to the potential of medicinal marijuana. There is a component of cannabis called CBDA that is non-psycho active. One of Farrar’s friends has a young daughter with tachycardia, which, like epilepsy, causes her to have up to 200 micro-seizures a day. Amidst a sympathetic response from the crowd, Farrar related how a dose of CBDA can sometimes give her 24 hours without a seizure.

A cannabis strain called James Journey, developed to reduce seizures, has an entire greenhouse on Palmer’s property.

People come to his farm from all over to get it, he said, and it changes lives.

“Not to mention the benefits for chemo patients, my sister was one of those

patients who benefited from (medicinal marijuana),” Carty added.

Additionally, Van Wingerden expressed excitement for cannabis’ “closedloop system.” No pesticides are used in cannabis production. “We used some pesticides in growing gerberas and other crops use a lot more. Cannabis is a closedloop system (as long as odor is mitigated).

Security

When the Q & A opened to the public, the panel was asked to respond to questions of security, including the armed robbery reported on Saturday, June 10, at a cannabis cultivation facility on Casitas Pass Road.

Palmer responded that the growers that were robbed are not part of the CARP Growers Association and the sheriff had told him that they were visiting the operation daily.

“The rules are changing,” replied Palmer. In the past ten years, at least five flower farms have been robbed in the area, according to the panelists. Stolen goods being primarily pesticides, sometimes valued as high as $80 thousand.

Van Wingerden expressed that he’d heard more public outcry for the cannabis robbery than he ever heard over the stolen pesticides.

“What makes this agricultural crop unable to operate like other ag crops? It’s not regulated sufficiently, there are still legal nonconforming actors,” said Farrar.

Cannabis growers in this legal grey area may be scared to call the cops for fear they will get in trouble.

“The more normal it (cannabis) becomes, the more normal reactions will be.”

Mr. Rogers’ values, politically speaking

I grew up watching the wonderful “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” TV show. I absolutely loved him, and I still watch him today. I’ve probably seen every one of his episodes. In fact, on June 8, the documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” comes out in select theaters around the country. It makes me happy.

I was also happy reading Diana Thorn’s letter (“Hope”, Vol. 24, No. 38) proclaiming Donald Trump is “the only one making America great again,” because it reminded me of Mr. Rogers’ wonderful quote, “It’s an important thing to be able to tell the difference between what’s pretend and what’s real.”

With respect to Mr. Rogers who was unremittingly kind and decent, I won’t make fun of Mr. Trump. I will however be honest, which will probably appear as though I’m making fun of him in some way. It’s hard to tell.

Mr. Trump said, “When I look at myself in the first grade and I look at myself now, I’m basically the same.” Not to psychoanalyze, but that’s messed up. Like, extraordinarily messed up.

Mr. Rogers taught us kindness, listening skills and love. Mr. Trump taught us porn stars and bigotry. Mr. Rogers gave us hope and an understanding of ourselves.

Mr. Trump gives us small words and even smaller answers.

Mr. Rogers stressed the importance of reading. Mr. Trump is stressed having to read anything. Mr. Rogers was an elegant, beautiful man. Mr. Trump is an abominable, incoherent blowhard.

To make a ridiculous story even shorter, Republican Bob Corker put it best recently concerning Republicans’ support of the president, saying, “It’s becoming a cultish thing, isn’t it?” Maybe you’re correct, sir. Or maybe Mr. Rogers was closer to the truth when he famously said, “There’s no person in the world like you, and I like you just the way you are.”

Further study needed on guardian caps

I have been working both in California and Indiana as a Nationally Certified and Licensed Athletic Trainer (Sports Medicine) for the past five years. Naturally, recognition and treatment of concussions/ traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a big part of our continuing education. We stay current on all the latest gear, including Guardian Caps.

When I read the article “Junior Warriors seek added football safety” (Vol. 24, No. 36), and saw the article about Guardian Caps I was a little concerned and wanted to help parents get more information to make an informed decision.

There have been many studies done on the effectiveness of Guardian Caps, the most recent being released in the Journal of Athletic Training in September 2017 titled: The Ability of an Aftermarket Helmet Add-On Device to Reduce ImpactForce Accelerations During Drop Tests (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28771033).

Ultimately, this study showed that “Guardian Caps failed to significantly improve the helmets ability to mitigate impact forces at most locations.” There are many other studies out there that show the same thing. I don’t believe these caps prevent concussions or reduce the likely-hood of sustaining one.

The CVN article also stated that “younger players also appear to be less at risk” due to the decreased velocity with which they can travel. This is not entirely true and they are actually at just as much risk as a high school or collegiate player.

Also, younger athletes take longer to recover from concussions and can still be healing even if no symptoms are present.

Reality Church needs a home

Some of you might know that our beloved Reality Church may soon lose the building we have called our home these last 18 years. Our lease ends Aug 31 and the landlord raised the rent by 48 percent, not giving us many options. We have been looking for a home that has the ability to house a lot of people. We have over 900 adults and 300 kids that attend our church weekly.

I would like to tell you what Reality has meant to me these last 18 years. I am a single mom who unfortunately did not have any help whatsoever financially or in raising my children. This church was mine and my two daughters’ family unit.

We had men who were father figures to my girls and youth groups where they could hang out. We had encouragement and teaching from our home groups and bible studies. We had people that gave of their time and finances to help us individually. The church staff was always there when I needed them for counsel and guidance and even financial help.

I honestly do not know what I would have done had I not had this wonderful family of God in my community here in Carpinteria. They have been a light to so many people like me. Over the years, I have been able to witness the support college, high school and junior high students received from my church members and staff. We have always given money to the schools and I know our community was blessed. I am asking you to pray for Reality.

Educate the public on backcountry care

I am responding to the ridiculous column published in CVN by Mike Wondolowski (“Recovery plan: do nothing,” Vol. 24, No. 37). How many dead people, animals and forest plants, not to mention the destruction of property and the ocean’s environment, would be enough to justify this callous statement. Do nothing?

I am not surprised as this is Santa Barbara. The same county whose policies polluted California’s ocean environment with its gluttonous oil exploration and extraction in the ‘70s. That also ignored the development of its water resources for a century.

I guess we also should not have had the debris basins cleared out when the rains filled them up with debris? No, like the oil companies in the ‘70s, just dump it in the ocean and pollute the ocean again.

If we are “water wise” we should not have beautiful flowers and landscapes?

Tear them out? We should only plant cactus and cover the bare ground with “mulch” (dead plant debris, we have plenty of that) to save water we are told.

That is what makes us “water wise?”

It’s the defeatist policy of an ignorant propaganda campaign that doesn’t solve anything. Doing nothing is not working.

You are volunteers not victims of your actions or lack thereof. It’s not a coincidence that Santa Barbara and Ventura county are the worst counties in the state at water security.

Allowing our backyard to be mismanaged by current local officials and federal agencies has resulted in death and destruction.

We had not had a raise in 12 years, but we love the company and find it a good place to work. In February we got a tax cut that put nearly $200 per month back in our savings account. The Democratic response from Nancy Pelosi, “crumbs,” it was not worth it. In addition to the individual tax cut/pay raise, 500 major corporations took their crumbs, paid employees bonuses, increased salaries by an average of 5 percent and hired new employees.

Two years ago, my friend was unhappy at work so she shopped the job market here in Santa Barbara, which is not that large to begin with. She did not find one thing. Nothing. A month ago, she looked again and within two weeks, she had five interviews and five job offers.

She had great, exciting choices for her next career move. What does a good job market mean? It means freedom, satisfaction, choices, and opportunity and perks which means work is more fulfilling, beneficial and rewarding for the worker.

Water district nudges rates northward

Ag customers could see tiered rates in October

Starting in July, Carpinteria Valley Water District residential customers will see about a 2 percent bump in their monthly bills. Boardmembers voted unanimously for the rate increase and to pass a $13.2 million budget at the annual meeting on June 13. Ahead of the annual rates meeting, 11 customers sent protest letters, which weren’t enough under Proposition 218 to prevent the rate increase approved unanimously by boardmembers.

Of the projected $13.2 million in expenditures for fiscal year 2018-2019, $7.2 million is budgeted for operating costs, $5.2 million for debt services, mostly related to the State Water Project, and $800,000 for capital projects.

A new expenditure for the district is about $500,000 to Siemens for upgraded magnetic water flow meters, or smart meters, which will allow the water district to tighten up water use and account for any waste. Customers will also be able to track water usage online once the smart system is fully integrated.

Although the smart meters are an expense up front, CVWD General Manager commented that an enhanced ability to monitor water usage should show savings over time. “It’s hard to see in a bud-

Residential customers currently fall into one of two tiers depending on whether they are low- or high-use. Low-use customers’ rates are projected to increase by $2.18 or 1.83 percent monthly, while high-use will increase by about $3.77 monthly or 2 percent.

Agricultural customers, who are currently not separated into tiers, would see on average a $25.73 or 1.6 percent monthly increase. However, if ag water usage outpaces projections by this October, those customers exceeding historical averages will be bumped up to a newly established tier two, which increases the rate from $1.94 per unit to $2.55. Customers placed into tier two would have an opportunity to protest the designation at the time.

Local avocado farmer Scott Vanderkar, who commented at the meeting, said, “If water is not affordable, it’s not sustainable, and if water is not available, it’s not sustainable.”

The general comment applied both to water rates and the topic of creating a Groundwater Sustainability Agency, which will be tasked with implementing a sustainability plan for Carpinteria’s groundwater basin.

The California State Water Resources Control Board recently labeled the Carpinteria Basin as high priority, which under state law triggers the formation of a GSA. CVWD will likely form the GSA and lead the process of involving stakeholders in creating a plan to monitor and enforce a sustainability plan for the groundwater basin.

WRCB has a report on the Carpinteria basin at its website that is currently open

for public comment. Members of the public can comment on the key findings that were considered in determining the basin is high priority. The report will be finalized in July, at which point the timeline for creating a GSA will begin.

At the meeting, McDonald emphasized that water rights pertaining to land ownership and well water do not change due to creating a sustainability plan, but stakeholders’ input will be used to define parameters of the plan. CVWD has projected groundwater use and mapped the basin, so it already has a firm grasp on the health of the local supply.

On the topic of forming a GSA, McDonald said, “My perspective is we’ve been grappling with this for years. Of course it’s going to be more work, but it’s an area we knew was coming, and it’s an area we’re familiar with.”

In 2014, the California Legislature passed a group of bills entitled Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, which among other things mandated the creation of GSAs in order to protect water resources.

The water board will meet next on Wednesday, June 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Carpinteria City Hall, and will likely discuss whether to initiate environmental studies on its long discussed recycled water project.

Summerland’s homeless

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s At its June meeting the Summerland Citizens Association invited Deputy Eric Springer to address the town’s local homeless situation. Deputy Springer, who works with the Coastal Patrol, assured residents that Summerland’s problems with the folks he called the “transient population” tended to be minimal.

Summerlanders all know there are homeless encampments on the bluff tops along the railroad tracks. The homeless question blew up a few months ago when a camp dug into the bluff between the freeway and railroad tracks caught fire.

The crisis caused authorities to investigate ownership of the property, and when the railroad determined it was theirs, they kicked the transients out. Unfortunately, the former occupants were incorrectly informed they could camp on the beach.

Nope, said Deputy Springer, beach camping is strictly against county ordinances.

Springer noted that Summerland has a small transient population, adding that his department received very few complaint calls. He stated that he knew who all the transients were, had good working relationships with them, and that his department had access to a mental health team that could provide assistance.

Unfortunately, he said, the Thomas Fire burned down the mental health facility in Ventura, leaving a big gap in service.

He urged us to give the sheriff’s department a call if we witnessed anything offensive or illegal, such as acting out in public, drinking in the park or excessive garbage strewn around. “If you see something, say something,” he said.

I was struck by Springer’s understanding and humane approach, as reflected by Sheriff’s Department policies. He urged us to talk to people, try to get to know our homeless population. “They are part of your community,” he said, adding that some are down on their luck and some are living the life they chose.

The homeless problem is likely to grow now that Ventura is pushing its homeless out (after a transient murdered a man in a beach area restaurant). And Santa Barbara is trying to do the same. But so far, according to Springer, Summerland’s small permanent population is not growing. There will always be travelers coming through, he said, but they don’t stay.

On a side note, Springer predicted there may be a summertime plague of auto burglaries. Thieves don’t like the cold, he said. So be sure to lock your vehicles, even when they’re parked in your driveway!

At the June 6 meeting of the county’s Planning Commission, planners unanimously voted to proceed with the Summerland HOV (freeway expansion) as presented by Caltrans and SBCAG. Summerlanders, who turned out in force for the meeting, had hoped that a pedestrian freeway underpass might be considered as part of the mix. While planners admitted that the process should have involved more public input, they shied away from linking the undercrossing issue with approval of the HOV project. The idea of an undercrossing, they advised, should be considered as a separate, parallel project.

Summerlanders came home from the meeting and formed an ad hoc committee to lay out future plans. Gary Robinson, who chairs the committee, reported that their first meeting was very fruitful, and that the broad spectrum of views held in the community was well represented.

The ad hoc committee delineated both short and long term issues, with members committing to work on either one. In the short term, the community has the opportunity to give input on design elements proposed for Summerland. We are fortunate that committee member and noted architect Andy Newmann has agreed to assist on design elements.

In the long term the committee will look at opportunities for additional projects down the road, like the pedestrian underpass. Caltrans has mentioned the possibility of “an origins destination study” in this regard, and the committee will pursue this possibility, among others, as well as future funding sources.

Robinson stressed the importance of a strong Citizens Association that can help keep residents informed and involved.

Swimming with the fishes

In Florida, you can arrange for burial in an artificial reef. I read the story in the Miami Herald when we were down there visiting this spring. The so-called city of the dead is in tropical waters just off Key Biscayne. Currently occupying only one acre, the “tribute reef” was about to expand to 16 acres.

The Neptune Memorial Reef is composed of monuments in various marinerelated shapes. Cremated remains are mixed with cement to form the molds for the monuments. I saw a photo of a star-shaped memorial with a copper name plaque attached, and other choices included brain coral, seashell, turtle, stingray and mermaid.

Evidently Floridians, especially divers, like the idea of sending their loved ones to a watery grave and then visiting them.

The reef is now home to 80 species of fish and corals. One woman, whose mother’s remains were placed in a Greek column, described swimming among the fish and

monuments as a “stunningly beautiful, uplifting, meditative experience.”

The reef’s design theme was the lost city of Atlantis, and it features archways, columns, a giant globe, lions (lions?) and statuary. A Neptune representative said they “have a lot of couples” and that you could have a couple and a pet “in one placement.”

Would I want the ashes of my nutty dog Gracie sharing an underwater space with me for eternity? Maybe not. But if you can get past the slightly creepy idea of an underwater city of the dead and think about the practicality of the matter, then maybe the whole concept is a good idea.

As one Floridian commented, “We don’t have much land to spare.”

I tried to envision such a thing off our coast. Maybe one of the oil platforms could be converted into a tribute reef.

Can’t imagine it would attract many visitors though. Too dark, deep and cold. And the fish weaving among the monuments would not be the beautiful tropical kind.

They’d be bigger and scarier.

Still, where land is scarce, it could be a smart move. If the ocean is invading your space—and in flat Florida the rising sea makes inroads every day—then maybe you should invade its space. For strictly passive uses where no breathing is required, of course. Like burials.

One good thing: Seeing all the smiling, laughing families carrying balloons and flowers on graduation day.

FEMA recovery map broadly enlarges the flood plain in Montecito and the Carpinteria Valley Property owners wishing to rebuild must avoid flooding from 100-year storms

By MElindA Burns on June 14, the new Federal emergency Management agency recovery map for Montecito and the Carpinteria Valley was rolled out as residents grilled county officials about the latest hazard designations for their embattled community. the map was created within five months of the catastrophic debris flow of Jan. 9—a record turnaround for FeMa. it represents a major expansion of the flood plain in Montecito and the Carpinteria Valley, based on the changed landscape in the wake of the disaster. The flood plain, marked in yellow lines as “high-hazard areas,” now appears roughly to cover half of Montecito and two-thirds of the Carpinteria Valley. though interim and advisory in nature, the new map is designed to help homeowners decide whether, where and how to rebuild in order to withstand or avoid future flooding from a 100-year storm—an extreme weather event. “this FeMa map shows the minimum elevation that the county will allow for a rebuild,” county supervisor Das Williams, who represents Montecito and the Carpinteria Valley, told a packed audience at the County administration Building on thursday evening. “it does not mean it is the advisable level to rebuild. it does not mean it is the safe level to rebuild. it isn’t gospel. each individual should be looking to have the most resilient plan to rebuild that they can do.” the FeMa recovery map is interactive, and can be viewed on the ready santa Barbara County website at readysbc.org/ maps/. a more comprehensive map that will update the Flood insurance rate Map of 2012 for both communities will not be completed by FeMa for another four or five years. The county Board of Supervisors is expected to adopt the interim recovery map on tuesday in santa Maria. a second community meeting to discuss the map is scheduled for July 11 with FEMA officials present, sponsored by the Montecito association.

Twenty-three people died and 470 structures were destroyed or damaged in the torrent of mud and boulders that surged down the burned mountainside above Montecito on Jan. 9. at thursday’s meeting, several residents asked county officials why FeMa hadn’t mapped the risk of debris flows, rather than floods. They wondered why some properties that were undamaged on Jan. 9 wound up in high-hazard areas on the recovery map, while others that were totally destroyed did not.

Mike Davenport, whose own property was untouched but is now in a high hazard area, said the county should limit those areas to properties that were damaged or inundated by mud and debris on Jan. 9.

“Models are wrong, they’re always wrong,” he said. “it seems to me there are no boots on the ground in this model. you’re conveying a very serious message, saying it’s a high-hazard area. it’s going to impact property values and property taxes and private insurance. i would really encourage you to go back and look at the neighborhoods that didn’t have any damage.”

Jon Frye, the county Flood Control engineering manager, said the new map was a flood map, not a debris flow map. “it’s virtually impossible to predict where debris flows are going to go,” he said.

The new high-hazard areas, or flood plains, are not based on clear-water flows as in previous FEMA maps for the area, Frye said. the recovery map, he said, takes into account the debris-laden

Property owners who were hit by the catastrophic debris flow of Jan. 9 may now consult the new FEMA recovery map, which expands the highhazard areas where flooding would occur in a 100-year storm. runoff that typically flows down burned mountain slopes and clogs bridges during heavy rains. the thomas Fire was not even fully out when extreme rainfall sent a torrent of mud and boulders coursing downstream. until the vegetation on the burned slopes grows back—a process that may take up to five years—the communities are still at risk, officials said.

“We think that this model represents a much truer picture of the threat and the risk,” Frye said. “i invite anybody to describe a flood event that we’ve had that doesn’t bring down debris. We call them debris-laden floods. They’re not debris flows, but channels fill in, bridges plug, culverts plug. that’s what really happens in real flood events.” some properties that were untouched on Jan. 9 may still be susceptible to flooding in heavy rains, Frye said, noting that water spreads out farther than mud. some homes that were destroyed in the debris flow may have been buried in five or six feet of mud, he said. at their new ground elevation, they may not flood in a 100-year storm. the FeMa recovery map is based on aerial liDar data—remote sensing imagery that was collected by air shortly

after Jan. 9, using light from a laser to survey the ground. For mapping purposes, FeMa assumed that 15 inches of rain in 24 hours in the mountains or eight inches of rain in 24 hours on the coast of Montecito and Carpinteria would trigger a 100-year storm—that is, an event with a one-percent chance of occurring in any given year. that’s a worst-case scenario; even the powerful floods of January and March, 1995, were not 100-year events, Frye said. on the map, the limits, or perimeter, of the high-hazard areas is drawn with yellow lines, encompassing all the land that likely would be inundated below a burned watershed in a 100-year storm.

“Depth grids” along the creeks are shaded from light blue to dark blue, denoting floodwaters six inches to more than 10-feet deep.

The county floodplain ordinance will require the first floor of new homes in the blue-shaded areas to be at least twofeet above the advisory flood elevations, which are shown in hundreds of tiny boxes on the map. Many but not all of

these elevations are higher than those on the 2012 FIRM map. In making decisions about rebuilding, officials said, homeowners should compare the two and use the higher elevation. property within the mapped highhazard area but not shaded in blue is subject to shallow flows of less than six inches during a 100-year-storm. But property owners in those locations “can’t take that as carte blanche to do whatever they want,” Frye said in an interview. if, for example, they were to excavate down to pre-debris flow levels, they might find themselves back in the flood plain, he said.

The recovery map can be modified to correct mistakes, Matt pontes, assistant county executive officer, told the crowd on thursday. For example, Marshall Miller said his swimming pool appeared on the map as a blue dot, showing that it was susceptible to flooding. “Oh, those millennials…”

You may have heard the phrase before, often accompanied with a comment about how kids these days are so different from past generations. However, did you know that “millennials” are actually adults ages 22 to 37? Perhaps the group you are referring to is Generation Z, or affectionately the “iGen.” The iGen are young adults, born between 1995 and 2009.

They are today’s teens and tomorrow’s future. Many adults and op-eds have made their fair share of stances about this generation, but in order to understand them, one must know the digital world in which they are living.

The greatest influencer in the lives of the iGen is the use of social media. Teens use cell phone applications to share photos or message friends, but their functions have evolved since the founding of these apps in the early 2010s. Long gone are the days of teens obsessing over the latest Facebook status update.

Today, it’s all about Snapchat and Instagram. And though some older generations partake in these apps, teens use them in ways never expected, such as coordinating plans with friends via location tracker or making secret accounts dedicated to publicly airing their grievances.

Instagram, a photo-centric app for posting and viewing pictures and videos, accommodates nearly 800 million active users as of December 2017, according to Omnicore. By including hashtags in photo captions, related pictures come up in searches for that tag. For example, attaching #dog to a picture of a pup will bring that photo up in any searches of #dog on Instagram.

Carpinteria teen Mary Harris said one popular trend on Instagram is #satisfyingvideos, clips of relaxing, repetitive tasks like mixing slime or blending paint. She also said #opticalillusion and #funnyvideos are on the rise. After the demise of Vine, an app dedicated to funny six-second videos, Instagram filled the gap for quick, comedic content.

Teens have taken advantage of private accounts by creating “Finstagrams,” or “Finstas.” A portmanteau of “fake” and “Instagram,” these are secret accounts meant for posting not-so-flattering selfies or rants about one’s life they’d rather not share on their carefully curated main account.

“I look at my Finsta more than I look at my real Instagram.

Finstas are like actual people’s real lives. Sometimes Finsta is too much people’s real lives. People crying on there and stuff,” said Harris.

On Snapchat, another popular social media app, users can send captioned pictures to friends, but once they view the photos, they cannot be accessed again. At nearly 191 million users according to Statista, Snapchat is popular among teens for its easy and fun messaging system that doesn’t take up space on their phone like traditional texts. Users can add stickers or filters to dazzle up photos, including “geotags” displaying the name of their location with a fun graphic. “[Snapchat] is how everyone communicates, said 17-yearold Makena Burgner, “You can text your friends, but Snapchat, it’s more convenient because that’s what everyone uses.”

“I only really text my parents, honestly,” added her friend Harris.

One motivator for this generation’s use of Snapchat is streaks. A streak is a tracker showing how many days you have conversed with a specific friend via the app, but missing one day “kills” the streak. Keeping multiple records is a badge of honor for teens, especially streaks lasting hundreds of days.

Burgner said her longest streak is 905 days.

Both Burgner and Harris agreed that Snapchat has revolutionized how young people make plans to get together. For example, using the Snapchat map, users can see a map of the globe with illustrations of friends, known as “Bitmojis,” pinpointing where they are. Harris said this has made it easier to determine which friends are in the area to hang out.

Facebook is the most popular social media app at nearly two billion users, but for youth today, it is well on its way out.

According to eMarketer, Facebook lost approximately 1.4 million users ages 12 to 17 in 2017, and estimates expect a larger decrease in the coming years. This loss also accounts for half of the total 2.8 million users lost that year.

Burgner said most of her friends don’t use their old accounts anymore, but she still frequents the app because of the lack of clutter on her main feed. “I’m mainly friends with adults,” Burgner said. “Kids probably don’t use it as much because Facebook has always been more for adults. That’s kinda always been how it is. I mean, you don’t need Facebook if you have a Snapchat and Instagram.”

Indivisible Carpinteria rallies on behalf of human rights

On Thursday, June 14, Indivisible Carpinteria held a rally on the grass near the Tomol Park on Linden Avenue in response to the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy on illegal immigration, which has forcibly separated more than 2,000 children from their parents over the past six weeks.

Despite widespread outcry from Americans—Republicans and Democrats alike— who view isolating and detaining children as morally unacceptable and antithetical to the notion of what the United States stands for as a nation, the president insists that it is Congress who must change the law even though he has the authority to put a stop to the practice immediately. At the Indivisible Carpinteria rally, speakers implored the more than 100 attendees to contact their representatives in Congress to urge an end to the practice of separating children from their parents who cross the border illegally.

Until recently, most undocumented immigrants who crossed the southern border illegally and were caught by border patrol agents were generally returned to Mexico the same day. Under the new policy, anyone caught crossing the border illegally is subject to prosecution by the United States.

Children are not permitted in immigration detention facilities, so they are removed and held in centers or settled with sponsors while their parents await prosecution.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made a simplistic declaration: “If people don’t want to be separated from their children, they should not bring them with them.”

The Rev. Dr. David Moore pastor at New Covenant Church, likened the moral imperative to end the practice of separating children from their families to the rules of the road: Just as drivers must yield to pedestrians, the Reverend said, “Humanity always has the right of way,” and asked the people at the rally to say those words aloud with him.

In her comments, Marisol Alarcon an immigration attorney in Carpinteria, noted that people are being denied the internationally recognized right to have a credible-fear hearing to determine whether or not they qualify for asylum.

Recently, the U.S. Attorney General narrowed the definition of credible fear for asylum seekers, stripping domestic abuse and threats from criminal gangs as acceptable reasons to grant asylum.

As most immigration on the U.S./ Mexico border involves people from Mexico and Central America (although Haitian and African asylum seekers have been arriving in recent years as well), the Trump administration’s shift to a merit-based immigration policy leaves most poor people with limited education little hope of finding a home in the United States.

Frank Rodriguez of Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE), Santa Barbara, pointed out that the current president has been using the tactic of “othering” immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries, and asked “How do we show love to our immigrant community?”

Sarah Gore Maiani, who recently joined a protest at the Otay Mesa border crossing, urged people to investigate investments they may unwittingly have in companies that operate the for-profit prisons where some immigrants are being held. Additionally, she noted that opposition to the practice of separating children from families is emerging among some Republicans, including George W. Bush’s former speechwriter who wrote eloquently against the practice.

All five of the living first ladies, including Melania Trump, have spoken out against the Trump administration’s “zerotolerance” immigration policy of separating families at the border. Former First Lady Laura Bush likened the practice to the detention of Americans of Japanese descent in WWII and to the actions of the Nazis.

Unanimously, the speakers on hand at the June 14 rally—beginning with Mayor Fred Shaw, who spoke as an individual citizen, then Maureen Foley Claffey of the CUSD School Board, the three speakers noted above and ending with Julia Hamilton Lead Minister with the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara—called for an immediate end to the practice of separating children from their families on the most basic level of reasoning—that is, simple human compassion. Hamilton said those who were tired from all the troubling human-rights news of the past year-and-a-half of the Trump presidency were experiencing “Holy fatigue,” but added, “we have to continue to work to build a world we can be proud of.”

As of press time Wednesday, June 20, President Trump signed an executive to end his controversial policy that has resulted in thousands of family separations.

Foresters chop away at the San Luis Obispo Blues

Top collegiate players from across the country come to Santa Barbara each summer to play for the Foresters baseball team, whose home office is on Carpinteria Avenue. On Father’s Day, June 17, the team beat the San Luis Obispo Blues, 3-1 to start the season off 9-0. “Our guys are really, really focused because last night we had a no-hitter, none of our position players knew we had a no-hitter; so, that’s called locked in,” said Carpinteria resident Bill Pintard, head coach and executive director of the Foresters, referring to his squad utilizing six pitchers to shut down the Blues on June 16, 5-0 without surrendering a hit.

But, the California Collegiate League (CCL) team is not just about winning ball games. Its Hugs for Cubs program annually offers activities to kids with cancer such as fishing trips, surf camps and visits to Angel Stadium to take in Major League Baseball games. The idea was inspired

by Pintard’s son, former Forester Eric Pintard, who played and coached with the team, while suffering a long battle with cancer that eventually took his life.

The Foresters got an early jump on San Luis Obispo, taking a 1-0 lead at Pershing Park in Santa Barbara, their home field for the past two years. With one out, Ryan Cash tripled to right center. Then Luke Ritter’s tapper to the mound was fielded by Blues’ catcher Matt Anderson.

As Anderson’s throw reached first, Cash sprinted home and eluded Anderson’s tag for the game’s first score. “Our first

They added another run in the second to make it a 2-0 lead. Meanwhile, Santa Barbara starting pitcher Brett Standlee shut down San Luis in the second inning, but the Blues got on the board in the third with Jay Charleston leading off with a single. Auston Chastain tripled him home to cut the lead to 2-1, and San Luis then had a great opportunity to tie the game in the top of the seventh.

Then, Jack Kuzma’s line drive to center was snagged by the fastcharging Logan Allen, who managed to unleash a throw to the plate, keeping the tying run at third. Hunter Breault, pitching in relief, struck out Chastain to end the inning. “That throw (by Allen) to the plate was spot on after a dive,” said Pintard of Allen’s zinger that helped to preserve the one-run lead.

Allen’s sacrifice fly added another run in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 3-1. Although the Blues put runners on base in both the eighth and

ninth innings, Santa Barbara preserved the win with right hander Chase Wallace picking up the save. The victory puts the Foresters atop the CCL with a 6-0 record.

Their fast start has been aided by the efforts of two former Carpinteria High School players—David Martinez, Class of ‘17, now playing for Cuesta College and Toby Spach, Class of ‘18. Both Warrior alums were on the ball club earlier in the season. “They were temporary guys, and they helped lengthen our roster,” explained Pintard. “We were glad to have them,” he added.

The Foresters return home Friday, June 22, to take on the SoCal Catch, with a first pitch at 6 p.m.

CHS Football Team visits USC Football Camp

On Sunday, June 17, the Carpinteria High School football team traveled to Los Angeles to attend a football camp tour on the USC campus. For the second year in a row, ‘96 Warrior alum and former football player Stephen Murillo led the future 2018 squad on the tour. Murillo is currently a member of the Trojan football coaching staff, employed as one of the team’s Offensive Quality Control Assistants. “Warriors thank Carpinteria for its generous support of this great educational/athletic experience,” said Carpinteria coach Rick Candaele, whose team held rummage sales on recent consecutive weekends to help raise money for the trip.

The Carpinteria Valley Girls Softball League 12U All Stars placed second and the 14U All Stars placed third in the Western Districts C Championship tournament in Oxnard, June 15 through 18. Both teams qualified for the 2018 Southern California State Championship tournament to be held in Lancaster, June 29 through July 1.

This is the first time in 10 years that CVGSL has had a 12U team qualify for State Championship, and the first time ever that the 14U team has qualified for B state.

On Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24, CVGSL will host the annual Beach Classics Tournament at El Carro, Viola and Cate School.

VALLEy MusEuM of History In 1939, Reginald Treloar Ogan composed a CArPiNtEriA term paper titled “Mountain-Seashore, at your Door,” in which he wrote about the history of Carpinteria and described in detail the state of the 3,300-person town in the late 1930s. Postal worker retires after 30 years

Carpinteria postal worker Debbie Bacchilega is hanging up her USPS mail bag and retiring after 30 years of service.

Bacchilega started her career with USPS as a young mother with no college education, just looking for a good job to take care of her kids, she told CVN. That job turned into a three-decade career.

From her regular mail route, Bacchilega says she will miss most “the people—seeing kids grow up, visiting with good friends daily and watching businesses open and close.”

What’s next for Bacchilega? “I’m looking forward to being able to do whatever I want, whenever I want,” she says. Santa Barbara MTD held its Fourth Annual Youth Art Poster Contest this spring for first through sixth graders with a theme of “Superhero Buses.” The contest garnered over 70 entries from children from across the county. MTD employees voted on winners in two categories, first to third grade, and fourth to sixth grade.

The first-place winners in both categories, Julie Maya and Frankie Macias, hail from Carpinteria’s Aliso Elementary School. The award-winning works of art will be featured inside MTD buses for the next year.

CVN celebrates Schiele’s 100th

Ligaya Coleman Schulterer is living in Vienna, Austria, and recently her Mother Delia Coleman and her brother Rizal Coleman visited with a little slice of Carpinteria in the pages of the Coastal View News. They went to the “Museums quartier,” one of Europe›s largest museum centers, and saw the Leopold Museum’s exhibit celebrating Egon Schiele’s 100th birthday with many works from his various artistic periods.

Trekking the Cinque Terre with CVN

Marcy and Bob Smith, hiked between Corniglia and Vernazza, two of the five picturesque villages of Cinque Terre that are only accessible by foot in Northwest Italy. Steep hillsides, planted heavily in wine grapes that are tended to by workers who ride miniature rail cars, run straight into the rocky shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The ancient buildings are constructed on cliff sides with majestic sea views, and Vernazza has a tiny harbor that seems to be carved out of the mountain itself.
